Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rick vc Suri is here with us right now at
Grand Park in Westfield. How you doing, buddy, Hey Johnny,
I'm doing. They're committing to a lot of things right now,
but I'm not quite sure what I'm committing to. I'm
doing real good.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I can't believe that we're you know, we're looking at
the end of training camp. I mean Thursday, Thursday night
as the last practice, you know. And I know people
won't believe this and probably don't want to hear it
from some dinosaur, but you know, there were days when
I first started in the NFL that we had six
weeks six four weeks, and those were two of ay
(00:32):
practices every day.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
You were just I mean, by the end of it,
you were a zombie. I mean, this is wonderful.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
This is it's almost like a country club, to be well.
They used to treat those six preseason games like there
were roll season.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Absolutely, and then I never went the sixth when I
came in in eighty two, which seems like a long time,
but we had gone to four.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
We had gone to four, and we at.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Least what we did is we played our regular as
the first quarter, the first half of the second game,
and then you played the half plus half the third quarter,
and then you'd very seldom share in the fourth game.
But yeah, and that's a little pet peeve of mine.
I don't understand it. I particularly from a defensive standpoint. Okay,
(01:17):
I don't understand why you don't play guys in a
in a game. Okay, even if even John, if it's
for a quarter like last I just last Thursday, I
would just play a quarter because that's the only time
you tackle.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
You don't tackle in practice. Even as good as this
team has been, problematic, there's unquestionably we're not You can
look that one up about that. You can google that
one up.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
We're the worst tackling team last year in the league,
and by a long shot. And so to me, you know,
there's I could get into a bunch of nuances what
I think makes good tackling teams, But one of them is.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Repetition, no doubt, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I mean, as you know, if you gotta shoot a
jump shot, you practice a jump shot. And I just
think even if you put your starters in there for
a few plays just to get tackling live tackling, practice tackling,
or you know, sometime in practice, have old fashioned tackling
drills where they're one on one and they're not bodies.
I just don't understand how you can expect to be
(02:18):
a good tackling team if you don't tackle, and.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Then that equates too, especially at the start of the season,
this losing trend, this organization that's going well for so
many years.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, I would definitely, I would definitely have analyzed that
two thirteen is your last win. I mean, your percentages
in week one and two are awful. And there's another
thing involved here too. Coaches so overreact today. I think
they're afraid of the media to tell you the truth.
You know, you go through a hard practice on Thursday
and you can't come back on.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Saturday, Like it just blows my mind. And here's what
I see. Here's what I see.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
The trend today is when you protect all these guys
in August. Just look at the amount of injuries in September.
They're unbelievable. It's unbelievable. Spike in September injury more than
training camp.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Right, Oh, it's the whole And then and then when
you balance it out, how many times do you balance out? Well,
you know, we did sidestep injuries in August, but we
really sucked in the first two months of the season.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Plus plus football is terrible r I mean right in September.
You know it's a but if you look at the
spike in injuries in September, because you just think about
it common sense. You don't even have to be a
nuanced football guy. Okay, you go out, you play fifteen
twenty plays in a preseason game, maybe twenty, and then
all of a sudden in the regular season you open up,
(03:38):
maybe in the heat of the day, and you have
seventy five I mean it. You know you're gonna get
push off injuries. You're gonna get torchs, twists, much less
just the contact. So yeah, you know, I you know,
I'll argue that till the day is long on people.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
You know that is Rick Van Cherry. He's got new
multi segments here on our pregame show, the Colt Pregame Huddle.
We absolutely that and more appearances on this show. Is
always great. As he joins us at Westfield Grant Park
at Colts Camp for their afternoon practice later off today.
So where would you expect the quarterback competition to be
right now, Rick.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Well, you know, obviously the injury to Anthony Thursday night
put a little bit of a chink in the armor
because I think up until that point, I think Shane
was doing about as good a job as you could
do to give them equal reps. I mean, he had
he cut it down. He cut it down the line
(04:34):
almost perfectly, and there wasn't how can I put it,
There wasn't a substantial difference. Okay, there wasn't like a
huge difference. And in that case, I think if you
would have gone all the way to the end that
way and they're pretty much equal, then the choice was
would probably be Richardson, because if they're pretty much equal,
(04:58):
you want to go with maybe playmaking potential. But you know,
then you see something the other night, You see a
bad day Saturday in practice. Last Thursday night under the
lights he was terrific, and then Saturday he was equally
as bad, and that scared me. And then the other
night being totally oblivious to the blitz.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
That scares me.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
And I like Danny a lot better than most people
oblivious or nonsalant.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
No, I don't think. I don't think he got it.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
And whether or not he was trained well enough to
get it or he can't get it. First of all,
First of all, there's a third thing. There's a nuanced thing.
But Henry, they it was it's actually a very difficult thing.
They went five out, Okay, five out. Why you're going
five out against Baltimore who's been blitzing for centuries, okay, centuries, Okay.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
No matter what person, no matter who you're playing about.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
So now when you go five out and you turn
the protection one way, then you've got a hot to
the right, but you've got a prime married to the left.
So you've got to be able to glance, you know,
glance over here while you're going back, and then come
over here. Now what happened to Anthony I studied it
in detail. They gave him a week side role, so
(06:14):
they rolled right into where the hot is. And when
he saw that week side role, I know his immediate
focus was I'm going to throw it to the slot,
which was goold, I'm going to throw over here. So
he didn't focus over here at all. And when two
guys came off that side, one of them was unrocked.
You only had one one blocker, and so you know
he missed that total. Now you know, to me, I
(06:36):
don't know if they maybe ask him a little bit
more than he could do, which is coaching. That's a
coaching flaw number two. Can he get it? I mean,
you know, that's something that you do have to get.
So that's that's a little trouble, Simon worrisome. But I
am you know, I like Danny Jones a lot better
than everybody else does.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
I mean, if he's the quarterback, I ain't gonna be mad.
You know.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Everybody keeps saying, well, you know, and I've said it, well,
he's not gonna while. But you know, if you got
a good enough team around you, you don't necessarily have
to wow every day.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
You got to do good things.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
You got to you know, And he's he's still even
in his bad days with the Giants, he's a sixty
four to sixty seven percent passer. You know, his twenty
two season. He earned the money. So I mean, you know,
I don't know. I mean, I you know, you know,
particularly with him starting this week, we'll see how that goes.
(07:26):
But you know, I don't you know, I don't know
how they want it to go. But like I said,
I'm just saying to you and we'll talk about it.
The Monday night. We'll have our big show, the big
one Monday night before Cincinnati. I mean not before Cincinnati,
before Miami. You know, I'm not I'm not gonna be
mad if Danny Jones is the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
I want you to hang with us right here. I
know Steven holders On and Andy Moro Auto Motive Group
hotline listening to what we have to say. Right here. Steve,
and I'd ask Rick Venturi, who's with me here at
Grand Park in Westfield right now, what he thought about
the quarterback competition to date, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 4 (08:01):
Yeah, I mean pretty similar. I think it's I do think.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I want to say I agree that Shane did a
good job because I was not convinced they were going
to be able to really walk that line of giving
both guys an adequate opportunity. And they did do that
until the first quarter on Thursday night, So I think
(08:25):
that was important. And I think in doing that, you
gave them both a great opportunity to create separations. We
didn't see that separation. So what the injury does, and
I think Coach kind of hit on this, what the
injury does, is it just put that little seed in
your head like Oh yeah, he gets hurt a lot,
(08:46):
you know, And I don't think this is a big deal.
It's not a big deal, right, He's fine. He he
practiced the next practice, he missed nothing. But it is
it is part of the reason that Daniel Jones is here.
It's because of the injuries. In fact, I would argue
without his injury history, Daniel Jones is out here regardless
of Anthony Richardson's performance. So so that's that's that's.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Something we can't ignore.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
But I do think that it's very even for the
most part. I agree that the playmaking tilts it for
me a little bit. And I think the incumbency of
Anthony Richardson has.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
To matter unless Carl.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Ersay and and Chris Ballard are are just talking for
their for their for their health.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Right.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
They both made it clear they want to see what
he can do that they said, he has time. Well,
you have to play him to see what you have
and at least give him that last chance. So I
would I would start Richardson unless something changes dramatically. If
I were the coach, I'd start Richardson, let him let
him play, let him pass, fail, get benched, get hurt, whatever,
(09:54):
and let it be what it will be, and then
you go from there.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Yeah, I don't see it quite that way, you know,
I you know, I mean we had we have seen
a lot, and I think this is you know, we
can spin it that it isn't a big year.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Uh, this is a huge year. It is. This is
a huge year.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
This is a huge year for the Holy the Holy Trinity,
the general manager, the coach, but most importantly, and there's
one thing, and Bill Belichick taught me this, It's only
one thing that matters, and that's beating Miami.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Nothing else, nothing else matters.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
And the best guy that you can put in there
to beat Miami, that's how you put in there, right.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
You think? And I'm gonna Stephen, this is this is
coming back to you. You mentioned just being the guy already,
I and my philosophy admitted fellas that was going to
be him unless there was just such an incredibly noticeable
gap that even dork's like me could see. And that's
when it's Daniel Jones. I just I don't happen to
(10:59):
think if it's closed that close is going to go
to Daniel Jones in this case, Rick, you can answer
this first, and that's Stevin, Well.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
The only the only thing that you guys aren't factoring
in that I factor in with coaching experience, is that
was a frightening misfire correct by your starting quarterback to
not even be aware of what happened. Okay, that that
if you don't, if you're not worried about that, you know,
(11:26):
you know, and I don't. I think he's been accurate,
But I still don't see pinpoint accuracy.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I don't. I don't.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
I don't necessarily see that, and you know, I hope
I'm wrong, because he has you know, he has tools.
You know, we keep talking about that. He has tools
to make big and explosive plays, you know. But at
the end of the day, it was forty seven percent
completion last year.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
Steven, go ahead, Yeah, so that's correct.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
I think in terms of the ten point accuracy, I agree,
he's been much better than he has been in the past.
I've been a better technician, it's been.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
A better passer the football. But it is true.
Speaker 5 (12:11):
I mean, he's he's probably never going to be a
pinpoint accurate quarterback. That's just not who he is. So
the question is can you live with that. The other
thing at play here and this is specifically to Shane's psyching.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Shane is a detailed guy.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
And I'm sure the sack bothered him. I know that
the little things that we maybe don't make a big
deal about him practice, they bother him. Shane is about details,
and particularly with his quarterback making the routine plays.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
I know that's a big deal for him.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
So he doesn't give Anthony a pass on that stuff.
And I think those are the things that can make
this closer than we might think, you know, or maybe
tilted one way or the other, at least in the
coach's head. But I would also say I think there
are other people involved in with this, and so I'm
curious to see what, if any impact that has. What
(13:05):
is the conversation from the from ownership, what is the
conversation from the general manager. They have different priorities, right,
so I'm very curious to see whether any of that
matters at all.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
You just can't know that right now.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
I I just and this kind of plays and I know,
I hope I'm completely wrong, and Rich you can answer
this or go back to Steve. And I just have
thought all along this quarterback competition wasn't really going to
end up as the final decision. Well, I ain't a quarterback,
I said. I thought, Yeah, I said that from day one.
(13:38):
I mean, I just don't think it is.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
You're gonna you're gonna always be close, you know, and
you're you're not gonna have.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
And unless somebody just laid in a you're not gonna
have enough time.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
You're not gonna have an objective, uh standard that you say, well,
this is the guy, so you're gonna have to go what.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
You value as the best guy against Miami.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Now, I also think, and right now, I'm concerned because
we started out here two weeks ago with what looked
like the best secondary here in decades, and all of
a sudden it's shaky and it's shaky and it will
hurt because of what Lou wants to bring here. But
I think if we can somehow get that ready for
(14:22):
the opener, maybe Jones comes back by the opener. I
actually looking at the weapons Adam Mitchell in here. I
think this is a good enough team now that they
can play with a quarterback who doesn't screw it up.
Speaker 5 (14:38):
Steven, Yeah, I mean there's definitely an argument for that.
I think I think it's frankly they're not going to
get an elite quarterback play from probably either guy. And
and part of me thinks, part of me thinks that
you're going to end up in a similar place no
(14:59):
matter who the quarterback is, as long as as long
as the turnovers.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
Aren't out of control. Here's what I mean.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
If Anthony Richardson plays, I think he will elevate you
at times and then he will hurt you at other times.
If Daniel Jones plays, he will be steadier, but maybe
not with you. And so I just think the net
outcomes quarterbacks elevate them and make the team better and
take the team from good to great. And then you
(15:27):
have quarterbacks or just kind of belong for the ride
and maybe hurt sometimes, help sometimes, or are just kind
of like steady Eddie and don't screw it up. As
coach said, I think either of those two guys get
you to the same place. The guys that really make
a difference are the guys in that first category.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
And I don't think the cold Tablan is the problem.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Steven Elder of ESPN ESPN dot com. He's on the
Andy Moore Auto Motive Group plot line. I know you
got to get in here Steven, go ahead and get
in here. We'll see you out here covering this late
afternoon practice. Man, thanks for hopping on early. You got
Steven Holder on the Andy Moore Automotive Group potline. Rick
Venturi back with us right here. Now, you got to
go across the field. Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Yeah, the point you made about the secondary is a
good one, by the way, too. No, no, no, that's look.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
Yes, I mean when I heard Kenny yesterday, you know,
when I saw him go out and at I mean
when we brought in, when we brought in Ward, we
brought in bying him and Cross played really good last
year and Kenny's an outstanding nickel, and Wally was just
playing his tail off as the fifth defensive back. And
(16:35):
you know we were up pressing doing all the things
that Lou wants to change in this defense.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
You know.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
But if you start, if you start going down corners
at limits, how much you can do. And that's so
important for this defense. This defense was twenty ninth a
year ago. Okay, let this is the reality, and for
us to be good, it's going to be really important
for Lou to get this thing up. Around fifteen I'm
not asking him to go to the top five.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
If he does, that would be real good.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
But if he can just get it from twenty ninth
up into about fifteenth, if we can get the qbrs,
I mean, the reality of our two quarterbacks, one of
them is twenty seventh, one of them is twenty eighth
in QBR. So if you can get one of them
up to fifteen, and then we are a minus four
(17:25):
turnover racial. These are three numbers to keep in mind.
This is what I'm watching every day out here. If
you can get that turnover ratio instead of minus four
up to a plus six like it was a couple
of years ago, all right, then you go into top
ten and if you improve those three things to those levels.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
You can win the South. You believe in what Ana
Rumo's doing.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Oh god, Yeah, I just want him to have the
tools that we look like we had three weeks ago. Yeah,
and I'd bet the injury to Wally was devastating. One
thing I'll say I'll say about I had this conversation
with Chris the other day. One thing I know about
Jones is that he will fight you to the death
for sixty minutes. And the more you use press technique
(18:11):
with him, the better he'll be where he can use
that length. It's kind of like basketball pressing. You you know,
if you make him sit back and wait, like we've
done a lot, that takes his tools away from him.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Somebody had mentioned to me, and I was going to
ask you this making a comparison with Jones to Gardner
Minshew and how he played. Is there a comparison to
be made in your opinion?
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Yeah, you know, I think there probably is. Gardener's a
little bit more. Here's how I would say that there.
Gardner's a little bit more of a gunslinger. Gardner brings
a charisma to the game. There's a kind of a
freaky charisma that he brings, and he's a little bit
more of a gun slinger. Danny's more of a steady
(18:58):
He's you know, he's not arismatic.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
You know, but you know that doesn't win you games.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
What wins you games is decision making and accuracy. And
if you go back, if you just take twenty two,
the season of twenty two, in isolation, he threw sixty
seven percent. He was fifteen touchdowns and five interceptions. He
ran seven touchdowns. I mean he led them to a
(19:24):
nine to six and one. Okay, so there is a
level of success there that we could find there. They
are similar and you know, Minshew played great here. In
my opinion, I don't know how we ever let him
out the door, to be honest with you, but you know,
I guess it was a few dollars more. But you
know we paid Danny, don't you know any thinks well,
(19:47):
you know, you know it isn't a competition.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
They didn't pay him that kind of money. Oh yeah, well,
and I'm the one you're talking to him ruight here
in I think I thought the competition was more window dressing. Yeah,
oh that's me. I don't. I mean, I just I
can look at fourteen mil for a quarterback as nothing,
especially if we don't have one.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
I think that that ar five, who was the franchise
hope in the face of the franchise, got tarnished a
little bit last year. And in their eyes, if you
notice they in the off season, they didn't say a thing. Now,
all of a sudden there's a move to restore confidence
and to get him back going. But I guarantee you
(20:27):
they didn't pay that money to Daniel Jones to not
come in here and be competitive. Plus with Richardson because
of his style. You need a good back. You need
a good guy that's ready to play. I know you've
got to get across the field. Thank hi, my brother,
I punch. Talk to you soon. A lot more of
the season. Yeah, Oh I love those pregames. Oh my god,
(20:48):
we'll be on there. We'll be on their Saturday. I
am doing the TV game Saturday, but we'll still do
all our pregame.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
I got it. But I love the pre game. I
love it too. Thanks Rick. All Right, you know they
Andy Moore Automotive Group pileline. He is the voice of
the Fever who may have to be out there right
now trying to find some able bodies to play point guard.
Considering the circumstances. John Nolan joins, us, I know the
Fever did address that, but yeah, Pickens probably are becoming
(21:18):
a little bit slim, are they not? As far as
the injury concerns of the hardship stuff's going on, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
If maybe Kelly Crosscoff when dunwarre scouting your Sunday morning
hoops game, see if you had any female hoopers there
who are worthy of a seven day hardship contract.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Yeah, well, I'm gonna tell you what. There're some good
players at CG for real right there, so you can
I will I will say this and this is not
a jest. This is like time critical for this group
right now. I mean it really is. I don't know
how much more you can withstand John.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Right, yeah, sona recap for anyone who admitsed it. At
the end of last week Thursday night, and Phoenix lost
both Sidney Colson and Aery McDonald this season and the
injuries they were handling the point guard bulk with Caitlin
still out of the lineup. So how to play on
Saturday night against Chicago with only nine available players and
literally none of those nine at traditional point guard. It
was a phenomenal job by Sophie Cunningham and Kelsey Mitchell
(22:16):
to really step up handle the ball and you know,
not only win on Saturday night, but it was actually
one of the more convincing victories of the season, beat
this Sky by more than twenty points. And it was
a stipulation with league roster rules that they couldn't sign
anyone UNTI laps of the game, so then sure en
up yesterday they did sign Odyssey Simms, who spent more
than a decade in the w She's previously been an
(22:36):
All Star, going back getting a little more than a
decade ago. She was a national champion bailor, so she's
been around the block in the league. So she brings
in a veteran presence, you know, perhaps some similarities to
an Aaron McDonald in terms of her overall speed and
quickness and having a pretty defensive oriented mentality. I think
we just heard from coach Steph White a little earlier
(22:57):
this afternoon following the team's practice, and she highlighted one
of the things that was appealing about signing Odyssey that
over the years, Odyssey has been especially good in the
pick and roll situation. So maybe that's one thing that
they definitely have missed with about Caitlin being on the
court and the dynamic play that she has with Aliah Boston,
(23:18):
perhaps not to the same level, but here on the
fly looking for something like that out of Odyssey Sims.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Now, Hey, John, I saw how Sidney Colston was injured
at as obvious. I didn't see Aerry McDonald her situation.
What happened there?
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Yeah, while sid was obvious left knee injury for Aria
was a right foot injury. And actually, I know some
fans on social media have cut the cliff off and
posted and I mean talking about a warrior mentality. It
wasn't the most obvious in on a play early fourth
quarter Thursday night in Phoenix for you, if you look,
(23:53):
if you're looking for it, when you watch the video,
you can see. I mean, it's kind of a weird
situation where Aerry took a wrong stat for whatnot, and
all of a sudden you could see her grimace and pain,
and yet she's finished out both an offensive and a
defensive possession, actually came up with a steal and drew
a foul. So you know, while it's a gut punch situation,
(24:15):
everyone'n be really proud of what Airy contributed to the
team did for that matter too over the course of
the year. And now it's to some degree it's a
bit of a rallying cry. Heard players and coaches talk
about how now you know they want to, you know,
go on and continue to not only get into the playoffs,
but advance in the playoffs and do it for their
teammates who are going to be on the sidelines.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Now, Hi's John Nolan joining us. He's on the Edy
Moore on a buttive group Potla next up. You're going
to hear him coming up tomorrow, Eddie Garrison, What time
you guys tip off tomorrow? I don't have the schedule
in front of me. John, Yeah, tomorrow night.
Speaker 6 (24:47):
It's a seven thirty game, and so our pregame coverage
we'll start with Eddie at seven to fifteen. Tomorrow is
an ESPN game, but we've got the local coverage here that.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Is well done right there, and it is Dallas at
Gambridge fieldal was actually back to back games at Gambridge Fieldhouse.
So I mean, obviously I thought Chicago came in a
good time, did it not. I mean, it's weird the dynamic.
A year ago it was that big kind of you know,
Celtics versus Lakers rivalry of sorts brewing last year and
(25:17):
this year Chicago's awful, I mean absolutely awful. And it's
almost like that you viewed them as something that was
very timely considering the circumstances for the fever. Was it
not on Saturday?
Speaker 6 (25:31):
Yes, definitely. And the Beaver has gone their part since
last year and continuing to progress forward.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
But you're right.
Speaker 6 (25:37):
Chicago has arguably progressed, and they've been without Angel Reis,
who had been playing better leading up to the All
Star Game, but they have not been able to overcome
her absence, like the Fever have been able to opt
to really overcome missing Caitlin for extended parts of this
season and beyond just having Chicago Saturday. Actually this is
the cushiest part of the schedule, and really the last
(25:59):
cushy part of the schedule. Dallas is a team down
there with Chicago and the standings. They've dropped five in
a row. Dallas has actually traded away a couple of
their veteran pieces. There's been different types of turmoil with
their team this year. So chancedacom for granted, because Page
Beckers is immediately one of the top players in the league,
(26:22):
and so they're capable. They've beaten the New York Liberty
this year, But you like your odds against Dallas at home,
and then looking ahead Friday will be hosting Washington the
Mystics or another team that has traded away talented veterans,
essentially not really looking to make a run this year.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
And then jumping.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Further ahead Sunday on the road at Connecticut. They have
the worst record in the w this season. That says
the Fever did drop one of their first teams without
Caitlin against Connecticut. So it feels like a stretcher this
week where it got to take care of business because
looming after that they still have three games left against
the top team league in Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Yeah. And I mentioned this to John Nollen's The Voice
of the Fever on the Eddy Morrow at the Motive
groupile Lote. I felt there was a stretch and this
was prior to the La Sparks game. I actually had
to eat some words, which is not a rarity if
you've listened to this show before. About the Sparks and
then the Mercury. I had suggested that without Caitlin Clark,
and you know, it was the dynamic that was going
(27:22):
on that I had felt the Fever looked much better defensively,
and then against the Sparks and the Mercury, simply put,
they did not. So I think that kind of squashed that.
When when you see this team better defensively, is it
all a part of the equation just who they're playing.
Are they better defensively against teams that aren't offensively that
(27:43):
great is that just where this team is on that
side of the ball right now.
Speaker 6 (27:47):
One thing that the Fever have done a good job
but for the most part roughout year, is defending the
three point line. Going into that game against LA last week,
they were actually number one in the league in terms
of allowing a few his threes and also had the
lowest three point shooting percentage. Again, and I feel like
to some degree, there's a little bit of randomness to it,
(28:08):
Like they had back to back games where their opponent
only made two threes and frankly missed some open looks.
Dallas was one of those teams, and then all of
a sudden, you play LA and they've got a stretch
post Azre Stevens who goes five for five from three.
You know, the reality is they're probably somewhere in between
that not giving up someone, you know, career night and
(28:28):
also not seeing teams have you know, the worst performances
of their season shooting. But they do make a habit
of really trying to pressure on the perimeter and take
away those open three point looks. I think what you
saw towards the end of that road trip was just
fatigue with the schedule catching up to them where they
had a stretch of six games in eleven days and
five different cities, three different time zones. You know, so
(28:50):
I think you know, as you know from playing, when
you get tired and suffer to close out on those
shooters and all of a sudden, I think snowballs for
them in those two games.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
So John Nolan, he's on any more, out of one
of upland talking a little hoop right here. I know
you you mentioned Stephanie White, I think talked a little
bit earlier today. We have any thought about the return
of Kaylen Clark. I know, nobody out there right now
is holding their breath the totally crap. Is that necessary?
Speaker 6 (29:21):
Yes, certainly, And so she was asked for an update
on Caitlin and it's, you know, kind of just uh
and and sort of the mystery of her return. One
of the things that we were told a few weeks
ago once this ke broin injury popped up, was that
they wanted to make sure she was going to have
more than adequate time to ramp up, including being able
(29:41):
to practice with the team before being thrust into game action.
And so at this point, Caitlyn had still not returned
officially the practicing with the team. She's at practices, she's
doing individual workouts. I guess the latest thing for her
is that she is running full court part of building
up her insurance to be able to go in practices
(30:01):
and then in games. But she has not returned to
practicing with the team yet, and so we really have
to wait until we hear that she's practicing with the
team before you can start to think, oh, is she
going to be a game time decision or anything like that.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
Yeah, it seems a long way away still at this point,
doesn't At John Well.
Speaker 6 (30:22):
I mentioned the schedule coming up here this week following
Sunday's game at Connecticut. It's the only time all year,
not counting the All Star Break, where they'll be off
next Monday through Thursday without a game, so you figure
you get multiple practices in there.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
So figures crossed.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
This things continues to progress for her and she's able
to sort to take the step by step ramp up.
Maybe that following game a week from Friday to twenty
second against Minnesota. But I mean, honestly, again, you don't
want to rush it. You can't be affected by the
injuries that it happens here. You got to treat it
as it, don't isolate the situation, you know, for for
(31:00):
her best interest, for the team's best interest for this year,
and you know, the long term future.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
Lexi Hall come out of down of the shell a
little bit, going kind of through a bit of a funk.
We see her fix that a little bit on Saturday evening.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
Yeah, so Lexi, you in summarizing for her, she really
had a break through season last year, wound up ranking
second in the league in three point shooting, and then
picked up where she left off the first half this season.
You you know, got Caitlin spot for the WNBA three
point shootout as part of the All Star festivities at
the field House, and then sort of coming out of
(31:35):
the All Star break coincidentally, she was definitely in a
shooting swump and she had actually gotten three consecutive games
without making a three. There was one game where she
had started off there in Phoenix. Both between twos and three,
she was zero for ten from the field. And yeah,
definitely Saturday night was a nice come back kind of
game for her. She was perfect from three, She made
(31:58):
four to threes at a season high and scoring and
one mean to make sure that. To point out though
with Alexi is that to her credit, she's the type
of player even when she's going through a shooting slump,
she's still arguably the best defensive player on the team.
And it's someone who's not sulkame and putting the head down.
She was still, you know, performing at the same level
defensively for this group and still being a great teammate.
(32:20):
I was just one of those frustrating things where you know,
she felt like she had the right process but wasn't
getting the results of seeing the ball go through the net.
Finally was able to see that happen and smile in
that big win on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
You don't go through the job though, right, No, Well,
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (32:37):
Any veraging texts were about your shooting.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
Hey James, did anybody make fun of me playing basketball
in any of those texts?
Speaker 7 (32:46):
Yes, somebody said you couldn't make a layup with the
four foot wide rim.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
Someone was insulting your jump shot.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
But I have lost the message, so I'm not sure
where it went.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Man, I'm glad. I don't know if I remember gonna
sign up for the I'm just joking. I'm the one
I asked for it, So it's it's all good right there. Nah, John,
It's it's true, and no doubt about it. It is true.
If you still play one of these days, much like
James Boyd has witnessed, you shall have to join us
and check it out for yourself.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
I'm down to lace it up and get the work.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Can Fort Wayne guys play?
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Hey?
Speaker 6 (33:25):
You know I've been training with Max Landish.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Oh yeah, well I I still look at him. He's
from our cross. You know we've had Max Landis a
professional for so many years overseas in Portugal. Dylan Windler,
you know, clearly has has spent time in the NBA.
I think you playing overseas now, Brooks Barnheiser in the NBA.
(33:52):
Now with Oklahoma City, we're a pretty good proving ground
to play professionally. I think our group on the South
side really good proving ground.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
Well i'll spoil that part, but down to have a
good time.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
You got it, brother, I appreciate that. John, Thanks for
coming on all.
Speaker 6 (34:09):
Right, make sure you get some suns treat on there,
don't burn all right?
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Oh man, it looks so I'm ten and looking good
right now, John, Lucky, I've got this fiendeck white T
shirt on the way that it is John Nolan, Voice
of the Fever Tomorrow night, uh seven thirty tip times
seven to fifteen. I think you mentioned with Eddie Garrison
right here on the fan with the pregame show. The
savvy Casey Value from Colts Radio Detwork joins us. Now,
(34:35):
you knew exactly what you were doing when you told
us the last time I was here, we were right
there on that table. I understand you knew you guys
are sitting right here and you were going to have
the sun. So you played. You played my man dev
like a damn guitar.
Speaker 7 (34:50):
I just or I just answered the orders and the
orders where we are here and the.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Fan is here's who's who gives the work?
Speaker 7 (34:56):
You know, I don't want to throw anybody under the bus,
but you know, Matt Taylor's.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
They where's Taylor's not here sitting in the sun. He's
out there.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
You know, he's got a MC this whole thing something
in the ac right. No, he's out he's on the sun.
He's on the sidelines. And then he walks up to
the steps and announces what the next thing of practice is.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Oh does he really Oh? I didn't know he did.
Oh yeah, he's busy, busy man. Wow, So he's probably
sweated it up in it.
Speaker 7 (35:18):
Yeah, so he wants to come in here and get
a little airflow and not be in the direct sun.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
So that's why what have I missed out there? I've
I've had this like window of view, yeah, of about
twenty yards here on this side of the field. That's it.
Speaker 7 (35:29):
Yeah, so for where we're looking, they're essentially going away
from you on every drill. But I think it's been
it's been a lot of team periods today, so a
little bit more like a I can forget what terminology
that Shane used, but a little bit more like scrimmage
based stuff, so situational and team periods.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
We saw i think.
Speaker 7 (35:47):
Our fourth interception of camp, which it's been a pretty
clean as far as turnovers go. But Anthony Richardson did
throw interception picked up by Sharvarius Ward. So I believe
you're going to getting moody in a little bit. So
he has an other interception, I least.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Say, hey, man, what are you trying to You're trying
to screw with the strong quarterback here. Yeah, there you go,
Wait a blank up the starting quarterback Moon.
Speaker 7 (36:07):
Yeah, but buddy, But for the most part, it's been uh,
you know, we've seen some good and you know, there's
been ups and downs, kind of like what you expect
out here. The defense has won a handful of snaps.
But I think we saw Jonathan Taylor rip off a
long run, so man.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Everybody got excited about that. Alec Pierce is not participan
not he's.
Speaker 7 (36:24):
Got a groin so he's yeah, so he's on the
sidelines with a groin injury, and so Ady Mitchell has
taking his reps there. He did make one play deep
down the sideline. So it's been you know, ups and downs.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
Yeah, it's Casey value with us. By the way, if
you're watching Triple A numbership, bloun Fore Youtubelo have a
new stream text message system at three one seven, two,
three nine, ten seventy if you would like to get
involved in that. You guys have a way that people
can get to you outside of social media. Yeah, it's
about it really.
Speaker 7 (36:55):
I mean, I know that JJ Snankovitz does a mail
bag for his Poto the Cult show that is on Thursdays.
He does kind of like a mailbag section that you
can you know, email him, but outside of that to
get in charge of Matt and I, it's really Twitter.
You know, I don't use I don't use Facebook or
Instagram very much.
Speaker 1 (37:16):
So Twitter's about it. Really.
Speaker 7 (37:17):
I don't get I don't get many people asking for much,
No critiques, no nothing, nothing at all.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
Nothing.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (37:24):
I'm more of a voyeur if you will. On Twitter,
I don't post very much.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
I just you got it. You got a hell of
a gig though, because you get to do all the
shows and then you need to do the pregame and
neither halftime. Yeah, and then you don't have to stay
for the postgame. Well that's changing. Oh you got to
stay for that's changing.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
So Bill and I, So I'm hosting this year what's
called Instant Reaction that you can find on Colts dot
com and all your all your podcast channels.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
I stand corrected. Bill and I are going to.
Speaker 7 (37:49):
Record that following his postgame duties on home Games and Roadway.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Would you agree to do that? Well, because here's the thing.
What happens is you have to wait because it's with Bill.
Speaker 7 (37:57):
So you gotta wait till Bill gets off the air
from his postgame show drives home. So typically you're like
four hours after the game before you're doing it. So
I'm like, hey, let's just let's just streamline this, get
this thing over while we're both there. In that way,
we can hit the pavement and not worry about anything.
I'm like, oh does this last?
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Is it quick? About a half hour? Oh that's not short, sweet?
You see, I'm just thinking about in terms of Greg Raikestraw,
that guy where you got to be there until all
hours of the night. I mean, I was a time
I filled in for Greg this past weekend and I
wondered about that too. You get four four pm. We
started our preseason game one post. Got get that one time,
(38:32):
and I thought, this sucks so bad. It's a call
in show. We got one call to open the show
and that was it. So a lot of bill and
I sounds like a request Saturday Night with Dave Smiley
right there. One call and that's going to be it.
And I'm just joking. Hey, by the way, shout out
to a good friend Dave Smiley. And I think everybody
knows I love Dave Smiley a great deal. I believe
(38:54):
his show got nominated for a Marconi Oh wow, and
just not one of those jokes of awards like the
Spectrums are here. It's like a legitimate awar. I know
my friend Tony Katz has been He may have wonted
before too, but I know he's at least been nominated
for it. So shout out to Dave Smiley for being
nominated for a Marconi. And we love it when you
get recognition, not just within Indy but within the state.
(39:19):
I know why, I k why. I don't know if
they're an affiliate of yours, ik why affiliate of Evansville.
They've been nominated for a Marconi. That's a historic many
decades station, great content and such. So yeah, I saw
that a little bit earlier today. I'm always proud to talk.
I don't care if you work at our station, our building,
(39:39):
a different station. I love it when radio and our
state is recognized. Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Speaker 7 (39:46):
And the Smiley Show, I mean, they've been doing it
at a high level for a long time.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
That's what they think. Yeah, I think they just kind
of jack around for four hours a day, But there's
something to be said about if you jack around and
people did it, that's great.
Speaker 7 (39:56):
And the longevity of that show, I mean, I mean
they there are shows.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Daryl Smiley's hairline too. Man, it's like that, So it's
the hairline has been left behind right there. But no,
congratulations to Dave and and the gang there and NICKI
and everybody for that. That's pretty pretty awesome for the
smile that morning show. Hey, I'm curious you mentioned war
the interception of Richardson. How else has the offense looked
(40:23):
in these certain situations.
Speaker 7 (40:24):
Yeah, I think until I kind of stepped over here,
I would say that the first team offense looked a
little bit better and that was highlighted by Daniel Jones
to start out, and I think they've flopped it. I
think the Anthony's now getting those first team reps. I
thought Anthony's first set was a little up and down.
Daniel Jones able to move the football down the field.
They scored a touchdown, and I thought ultimately the offense
(40:49):
has looked looked better today than it did yesterday. We've
seen some splash plays out of the tight ends not
named Tyler Warren, which is a good thing. We saw
Will Mally. We have a couple of really nice plays
here today. Jelannie Woods scored a touchdown, so that's good
for him.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
But for the most part.
Speaker 7 (41:03):
I think if you're grading the quarterbacks of today, I
think Daniel Jones right now has a leg up, but
there's still a good you know, forty five minutes at
the practice.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
So Casey Value the Colt Radio Network got a new
interesting twist to the post games that we'll let you
in on once again. Coming up in just a minute.
What are you looking forward to to the joint practices
with the Packer I should say the joint practice the
Packers on Thursday. Yeah, the biggest thing, I mean part
of it.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
It's wild to think that when the joint practice is
over that breaks camp here for where we are up
here Westfield, which is in years past, typically you go
up to that final preseason game. But with everything being
in Cincinnati, they're gonna break camp and that'll be it.
But I think ultimately I wasn't in Baltimore, but I
heard a lot of really good things. It sounded like,
(41:47):
you know, offense and defense had some very bright spots
against a really good Ravens team. So I would say
just carrying that over because the Packers is another team
that they're probably going to be a playoff team, so
you're going to get a bunch of really good dudes
out here you're going up against when you're going on
these individual and team periods against the Packers, So you
want to see them be competitive again, just to give
(42:09):
you a little bit more hope, because I mean Thursday,
I think we'd all agree that that preseason game was
kind of what you would expect of a preseason game one,
just a lot of ups and downs, just a little
kind of game. I'm expecting kind of the same in
preseason game two because you're going to get a lot
of that run there in the joint practice on Thursday.
(42:30):
So I really just want to see them pick up
where they left off last week in Baltimore.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
So and I brought this up. We talked to Ray
Venturi about that again, a part of the Colt spring
game huddle with us, even more so this season than
he's been in the past, which we're very excited about.
But he had mentioned just the level of importance Thursday
and Saturday has in terms of this whole quarterback situation.
It's massive.
Speaker 7 (42:51):
I mean, I would assume that you'd want to have
a really good idea on who the guy is if
there still is right that competition heading into next week,
But you'd really like for that final preseason game to
be that typical dress rehearsal for the ones, So you
you'd almost hope that that decision is kind of made,
so that would make you know this Thursday and Saturday
(43:12):
way very very heavily on what it's going to look like.
We haven't seen Anthony really favoring the pinky, so that's
positive news for him.
Speaker 1 (43:19):
How do you favor the pik?
Speaker 7 (43:21):
I know, essentially, it doesn't look like the ball's coming
off his hand any different, doesn't look like he's lost
any you know, any distance or velocity on his pass.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
So I think that's one of the things you look at.
So I should have brought that up. I wish I
would have came up with the favoring. The favoring either go.
You could take that, take that completely assured. But out
there it's like when you drink glass of wine, you know,
leave it hang, And I'm favoring the pinky right there
as well. That is Casey value hate. Defensively, you mentioned
(43:49):
that Mooney Ward had a pick of Anthony richardson the
fourth during camp. Yes, far this year, who else has
looked good? Everybody talks about Laatu Latu.
Speaker 7 (43:58):
Why, Yeah, I mean I think he was. I would
give him credit for another sack again today. He has
just been consistent pressure and that he said before, you know,
I think it was during OTAs the first time that
we talked to him in the offseason that he wanted
to sack a game. That was his goal, which is lofty,
but what we've seen out here, he just he looks
(44:18):
like the game is slowing down and he's kind of
maybe worked on some new moves in the offseason that
a is getting him. You know, he's more of your
speed rusher. He's not, you know, going to be your
power guy. So he's got to work on case, you know,
that way to get.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
That that is such a game changer and and something
that is unrecognizable from a fan base for this team.
But yes, been so damn long since we went over
something the other day with double digit sacks Sunreal and
since Robert math Is and the Dwight Freni era, you've
had two yes, and one was like and nothing against
(44:55):
Eric Walden, but that was a yeah. The dude just
kind of ran into a a lot of coverage sacks
down the year. Justin Houston was the thousand years old.
Speaker 7 (45:03):
Yeah, yeah, and that's it is crazy when you think
about I think the number was since two thousand and
two the guys not named Freeenie or Mathis that have
gotten double digit sacks or just Eric Walden and Justin Houston. Yeah,
that's great, And I know in some ways you think
about two thousand and two and those were really good
years for the Colts, but that's a long time ago.
Long time ago like that is that is something that
is very needed for this defense and if Latsu Latsu
(45:26):
really continues to take that next step. Now, we saw
flashes of really good stuff last year during training camp,
and then you know every rookie kind of has that
learning curve.
Speaker 1 (45:36):
They hit that rookie wall.
Speaker 7 (45:37):
So we're hoping here in year two he's found ways
to kind of avoid, you know, where those slumps that
he saw in his season.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
But he's looked really good in camp. Casey value with
us and again Mooney is going to join us at
a picking camp a little bit earlier. We'll talk with
him about that. And the Packers coming in here for
a joint practice on Thursday and then a preseason game
coming up on Saturday. By the way, coach pregame huddles
on Saturday. What we got for everybody?
Speaker 7 (46:02):
Buck, Yeah, we'll be We'll be live at Touchdown Town
for sure. We'll be for all game live at Touchdown
Tit you come, say hi, It'll be J and V, myself,
Bill Brooks, and Joe Wrights. Now, Joe and I will
have to leave probably about a half hour into the
show just because we're both on the radio broadcast, but
we'll have like you said, Rick Vanterrey's gonna join us
for a couple of segments, of which is awesome. We
(46:23):
we asked him if he was okay to do a
little bit more and he kind of said, hey, I
mean I can host the show if you want it.
So you know, we can have Rick as long as
we want. And we're gonna have a little bit of
Larra Overton as well. So yeah, come out and join us.
It's gonna be gonna be a lot of fun. It's
a it's nice to have a couple of preseason games
to close that are one o'clock games, So it gets
us like that a lot.
Speaker 1 (46:42):
You know, that was it last year, but there was
one on a Saturday that came at about five o'clock,
was it? Yeah, because I was down there. I think
I had to go from five and till seven, and
then did the CHAMV takeover opposite, Yes, if I remember correctly. Yeah,
So we don't have to worry about that.
Speaker 7 (46:56):
This year, we got pregame huddles starting at ten o'clock
locally here on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
So come out and join us. That's awesome. All right,
one more time. Explain what you and Bill Brooks were
going to do after Colts games. Yeah, so we're gonna
do it's called Instant Reactions.
Speaker 7 (47:08):
Is the second year of this podcast, So it's gonna
be me and Bill, and it's in it's a video form,
so we'll we'll throw audio online but also be a
video component of just essentially the first digestion of whatever
the game was outcomes reasons why who played well, who didn't,
and then kind of a quick preview of what's coming
up next to quick little twenty fun yeah looking forward. Yeah,
(47:29):
and I'm not gonna lie to you. I love working
with Bill. I do a handful of things with Bil.
He makes it real easy. So when they asked me
to do this, it was a very easy.
Speaker 1 (47:36):
Yeah, you know, problem, how did things go on Thursday,
because I was in Frank Lennett Legends for yelf Out
and you guys were downtown. Everything seamless, everything was good.
I hit the mark you did that was solid?
Speaker 4 (47:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (47:48):
Yeah, And there was there was an inter There was
not an intern, but there was a guy shadowing in
there with Nathaniel and he.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
Was like, wow, that was impressive. Boom hell yeah, maybe
that's professional grade right there. That's right. Always good to
see a case. You too, men know that dev now
understands on Thursday. Table number two is not an option.
My brother, you remember that could look at him over there.
Here's what we can do. We'll just set him up
side by side and we'll just block the hole. Here's
(48:14):
what you can do. We can both have it if
you just move that one. Can you not move?
Speaker 4 (48:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Who? They all set that up right there doing this.
How's the operations? Yeah, the events people here. I have
lobbied and this is a true story. And if you
guys are watching via the Triple A Membership Lounge, you
know I have lobbied to do this show live from
the Crapper because nice in there, my god, and its great.
It does smell like p at all a fancy. I
(48:40):
mean it's great, it smells great and it's cool. I said,
can we do this show from the crapper out here?
Like the best part about it? Sarah, I mean I
think the crappers probably better. They have suits over there
they do. Yeah, crappers better than the sweets. Well, I
don't know. I haven't been. I haven't been up to this.
Where do they get those crappers? Because if I ever
have a party, that's what I'm going. Can we give
somebody a shout out? Yeah, we get you see we go? Hey,
(49:03):
dev do you know where they get those quality It's
got to be called quality crappers. Because this ac it
is literally fifty degrees in there. It makes it so
easy to your innate if I lock up about it.
This is lock up at home, Like I always thought.
The best toilet outside of my own is it Von Mahr.
That may be better than von Mare toilet? Is von
(49:26):
Mar still around. Von Marr's got the greenwood toilet. Sometimes
if I'm passing by, I'll just go in and go, Wow,
this is the best toilet of all time right here?
What's annotation?
Speaker 4 (49:36):
Service?
Speaker 1 (49:38):
Senates shout out to service Sanitation Service sanitition. It is
great in there. Not gonna light to you it is.
Speaker 7 (49:44):
It's a very nice trailer bathroom that you can they
drop it off, and I mean, you're right, it don't
smell in there.
Speaker 1 (49:52):
Oh, I wanted to do the show. I've mentioned that
to dev right. Just try to go. Man, the sun's
going to be right here. I said, let's go in
the toilet, do this thing. It is awesome. So we're
doing the Labor Day Weekend Bender coming up here in
a couple of weeks and Mystic Waters. What's it called again?
Service Sanitation, Service Sanitation. Would you like to bring one
of those bad boys up there? You go and put
(50:13):
that right next to my cabin, right next to it. John,
you're selling your show right now here. You go. I
love you, Service Sanitation. Boom. I could not believe how
great it's change. Got that for a promo. Send it off, Boom.
You're in. Normally you walk in some place and go, man,
this place smells like me. I should because it's the bathroom.
(50:34):
But no, great case. Man, I appreciate you. Look at
that guy back there. His name is Rick Venture. Here's
the man.
Speaker 3 (50:43):
Somewhere on Facebook or something.
Speaker 1 (50:48):
He didn't think you could actually shoot John. You saw it,
thoughed anybody. I'm telling you, I I listen. I am
a manimal now Rick absolute manimal. Mooney Warter is gonna
join us coming up in a bit case. Thanks man,
of course, John, appreciate you. Casey Value. Colts Radio Network,
the Colt's Free Game Huddle's got all that content for you,
whether you're talking about it on the radio or digitally
(51:10):
speaking at Colts dot com. That is Casey Value right
there with us now. First time he was on, he
was outstanding. Mooney is in the house with us right now.
From that Colt Secondary. Do you get yourself an interception
this afternoon?
Speaker 8 (51:26):
I finally got me one. Man finally got me one.
Speaker 1 (51:28):
Were feeling good about that. What I didn't get shared.
I had like a twenty yard scope right here, so
I didn't see it. Explained it to the folks.
Speaker 8 (51:36):
Oh yeah, we were just in our version of COVID
to good disguise about the entire defense. A great call
by coach Leu, and we sold all our press on
a on a snap. I came down kind of paid
COVID to a kind of food office a little bit
and he gave me a good good little Christmas pres.
Speaker 1 (51:51):
Good gift. Yes, So you mentioned coach Lou. How has
your acclamation been to his defensive philosophies.
Speaker 8 (51:59):
Oh, it's been fun, man, it's been challenging to it.
At the same time, it's a completely different scheme than
what I played last year. In the past three years
with the forty nine is on, we'll press seem now
you know, a lot of a lot of man and man.
I think I heard around the building that we didn't
play a lot of man and man last year. Coach
So Coach Lou Man, he aggresses man like, he's not
scared to get up there and challenge guys no matter
who to receive, who the quarterback is. So it's been
(52:21):
fun to acclimated, you know, kind of re learn how
to play man and man in the press technique.
Speaker 1 (52:24):
So we talked about this. We're a basketball fan and
we were talking about that before we got back here.
Like they played a lot of zone in the past.
Now it's a lot more manda man. Are there like
applicables you can make from basketball terminology to football terminology defensively.
Speaker 8 (52:44):
And from a manda man. Yeah, it's kind of playing corner.
Is the exact same as playing defensive basketball. He's basically
just standing in front of in front of a man
the whole game. So you got to have a real,
real good larter of movement. That's like the main thing
when it comes to playing press man in corner, have
good eyes, eyes on the hills, and you know, real
good learder movement, some quickness in his splows news. And
I think if you rip it every day, it's not
that it's not that bad to do.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
I don't know if you want to say this, because
I know you guys don't like to give up this information,
but who's the toughest to cover, the toughest to cover
in the league, in the league, not just out here
but anywhere.
Speaker 8 (53:17):
I don't know if you're gonna like my answer, but
I kind of don't like putting putting guys on a pedestal,
you know.
Speaker 1 (53:23):
Well, that's why that's why I phrased it in the.
Speaker 8 (53:25):
Fashion idea, even though like I'm competing against them, so
I kind of want to look at them. It's like
they're on the same level as.
Speaker 1 (53:30):
Me, you know what I mean.
Speaker 8 (53:31):
So I don't want to say this guy is super
hard to come and put them like on a pedestal,
I understand everybody else.
Speaker 1 (53:36):
So that's why I phrased it that way.
Speaker 8 (53:38):
I just feel like I can cover anybody in the
league long as I got good as a good technique,
and I think i'd be I can win not a
percent of my matchup.
Speaker 1 (53:44):
Do you ever hear other corners give a name and
go I don't know about that.
Speaker 8 (53:48):
Yeah, man, A lot of guys, the top five guys,
but it's like kind of like you kind of like
making them a kind of like idolizing them, belove. Yeah,
even though you know, you got to respect everybody game
in the league because a lot of guys but in
a lot of different different challenges. Like it's a lot
of six four sixty five guys, big guys. Then it's
a lot of guys that run four two four three,
so and it's quick guys to it at the same time,
so a lot of guys present different talenties. But you know,
(54:08):
I mean, I just try to go in and study
every game my opponent, and you know, as long as
I do that to know the guy I'm going to
going up against, how it win.
Speaker 1 (54:15):
A lot of you feel like before every game you
know exactly where the person you're going to be on
is going every step I mean, can you predict it?
Speaker 8 (54:21):
Yeah, not every step, but you can get a pretty
good feel for the guy. You know what I'm saying me,
I've been in the league for eight years now, so
you know, I done played a lot of ball at
the highest level, two three Super Bowls, a lot of
playoff games too, so I kind of like know a
lot of the guys in the league tendency. So you know,
just experience helped me out a lot for sure.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
How much watching tape does that help? How much? Just
as you mentioned going through the process of playing, how
much is it?
Speaker 3 (54:44):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (54:44):
Yeah, just watch the tape. It's basically like studying for
a tests in college. You know, we out went to
college and trying to think so I was finals, So
it's just like kind of taking the tests in colleges
knowing what you're getting, kind of trying to know that
guy's movements, you know, his tails and everything like that,
and it'll put you in good situations during the game.
Speaker 1 (54:58):
It's mooning with us for the cold second again. The
joint practice coming up against the Packers on Thursday, and
then preseason game two coming up on Saturday. Are you
playing on Saturday?
Speaker 9 (55:07):
Yeah, we know, I don't know yet. To be honest, man,
do you want to play on Saturday? You're not cool
playing the preseason.
Speaker 8 (55:13):
I don't mind playing in the preseason, man, kind of
get you luded up and ready for the season. You
definitely want to be ready for the season, try to
stay healthy and everything like that. But the coach stores
out there for a driver is to be ready.
Speaker 1 (55:23):
Is there something to be said about being better prepared
when you get some preseason working, whether it comes to
covering or tackling or recognizing, Is there something to be
said about that?
Speaker 8 (55:33):
Yeah, it's basically kind of like find twenty of your skills.
You know, I'm getting your reaction time downpack. Kind of
sometimes in practice against going against the same people over
and over again, it can kind of gets still. You
can't know what's coming out of time, So just going
to getting a different look against different team, it kind
of ups your intensity a little bit, you know what
I mean. So that definitely helps.
Speaker 1 (55:51):
Out a lot of reason why to bring that up
is and you probably are aware of this. There has
been a start of the season struggle around here forever
for the coach week number one forever. Really, we were
trying to think about ways and means and what you
can go about changing.
Speaker 8 (56:04):
That up Man, changing that this year?
Speaker 1 (56:06):
Man, we like.
Speaker 9 (56:09):
And we were looking forward. Man, do you feel that here?
I mean, you know better than anybody else. Do you
kind of feel that out here right now?
Speaker 8 (56:16):
Definitely? Man, I feel it for our leader, man, the
head coach.
Speaker 1 (56:19):
Man.
Speaker 8 (56:19):
You know, he he got a sense of urgenty by itself.
You know, he kind of like sprinkling that down to
you know, every every group on the field, every position
group on the field, team meetings, you know, he trying
to create their edge every day in practice. So it's
definitely a sense of urgency around here, and we're trying
to come out strong.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
I see, uh different from Kyle Shanahan for example, Uh,
in what ways you mean? Personality wise? Coaching style?
Speaker 8 (56:39):
I mean it's a lot of differences. It's a lot
of differences. I just feel like they're both great coaches.
I kind of don't really know how to pam obsoletely.
Coach shannan been doing it for a little bit longer.
He's been, you know, on to a little more Super
Bowls and want a little bit more. But I definitely
feel like Coach Shannan, I mean not Coachannan, but coach
Stiken coming into his own and you know he gonna
were gonna shine this year.
Speaker 9 (56:59):
And Andy Reider big red, big.
Speaker 8 (57:02):
Big, big, big, big red legendary.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
Man.
Speaker 8 (57:06):
I love, I love coach, and man, he loved me too.
I talked to him a few times since I left
the CHIE. So I had a pretty good relationship with
all the coaches that I've been with. I think I've
been with some of two Hall of Fame coaches so
far on my career coaching. And the coach read so
hopefully coach Psyche. You know we can get to the
Super Bowls and he getting you know, up his legend
status too.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
We talked about this back, I think in March when
when you proved yourself, when you felt you kind of
flipped that switch, improved yourself for the NFL. What moment
was that? And I'm assuming it was in Kansas City?
Uh you remember, like kind of.
Speaker 8 (57:36):
Like my fourth year in Kansas City. Man, I didn't
get many accolades my fourth year in Kansas City, but
my coaches started to begin to trust me to travel
with the number and receiver every game.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 8 (57:45):
And that's like, oh snap, like I'm CB one now,
you know what I mean. So I got to come
out of every game knowing on third down, on backside
by myself, the ball coming my way, and most of
the times I was making plays that year. So that
led me to get in a real big, you know,
a nice contract, the four nine. So when once I
got paid, man, I just kept trying to get better
and better than eventually you know, went ap on.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
The What were were they disappointed when you left initially
the forty Niners?
Speaker 8 (58:08):
Yeah, yeah, I think I mean I was disappointed. That
was disappointed, you know, because it was it was a
good personal and business relationship both ways. I feel like
we both won, you know, I won, you know, financially,
and they won, you know by the way I played.
So it was it was a real, real good relationship
with the forty Niners.
Speaker 1 (58:23):
You mentioned that that you thought initially back in free
agency you were going to New Orleans. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (58:27):
I thought I was going to New Orleans.
Speaker 1 (58:29):
It was because they did they come at your heart.
Speaker 8 (58:32):
Yeah they did.
Speaker 1 (58:33):
Man.
Speaker 8 (58:33):
It was kind of like, you know, going through what
I went through last year. My biggest my biggest thing
was like location. You know what I'm saying. I kind
of want to be here around my family. So I'm
from Mississippi, which is two hours from New Orleans, my
hometown to call Messippi, and I stay in Dallas now,
which is only like an hour and held flight from
New Orleans. So I kind of wanted to be down there.
But I mean the coach Kane, the coach Kane that
was like maybe want you, we need it. So I
(58:54):
was like, let's do it.
Speaker 1 (58:58):
They get it done in that blue I mean, well,
you're you're looking, You're looking at the secondary. They came
at you and cam really hard.
Speaker 8 (59:07):
Yeah, man, we got it.
Speaker 1 (59:08):
We gotta come out of a dude to your left
right there. That that brings a lot of force up.
Speaker 8 (59:11):
Big grown, big grow fun guy. Man, find got to
be around. That's why I hear like Peter Griffin. You know,
family guy is really well you know, everybody love him
many man, not even.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
Does he do an impression or family guy impression. No,
that's why you like that. Got the fun love ye,
you have somebody to keep it loose.
Speaker 8 (59:31):
Yeah, he brings the joy to everybody here around man.
Everybody's I would assume though.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
You gotta have somebody like growth to keep it loose.
But you can't have somebody that keeps a loose not
performing at a high level on the field either. I mean,
you got to bring the both, don't you.
Speaker 8 (59:42):
He definitely a big dog on it out the field, man.
You know, everybody respect him on the field out the field.
So I look forward to seeing seeing my boy make
some players call some heav this season. Man, get some
sag when I stop everything like.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
That, how can you tell him camp that you have
a defense that's coming along.
Speaker 8 (59:55):
Just the intensity, man, just the intensity and the energy,
you know, everybody celebrating. We make players having fun, you know,
just having that sweat, playing with comfortence and not being
scared of nobody. Nothing, not complaining about cars, you know.
Like I said, man, is just the energy and enthusiasm.
Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
Has he made wings for you over there yet?
Speaker 8 (01:00:10):
Made wings? What you mean?
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
Chicken wings?
Speaker 8 (01:00:14):
Grove? Nah, Nazi, I gotta you to the crib. He
got to invite me to the crib.
Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
He's like, wait a minute, you haven't invited him over
yet to That's all I hear about from everybody around here.
Speaker 8 (01:00:23):
I gotta I gotta go.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
We've been killed though, so I'm introducing you.
Speaker 8 (01:00:28):
We ain't we gonna. We're gonna, you know, enjoy it
doing the season for sture.
Speaker 1 (01:00:32):
When when was that they did that story? Was that
last year or two years? No, it was Hard Knocks, man.
Speaker 8 (01:00:37):
I didn't watch the Hard Knocks man, I didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:00:39):
Was it was? It was Hard Knocks a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 8 (01:00:42):
Cooking that chicken that was the best. That's the best
part of the Chef Stewart. That's I tell you, I'm
gonna take it out.
Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
So you're you're a basketball guy. You mentioned I think
the first time we talked to you're a lebron guy.
But you got to tell me you fell in love
with a little blue and gold, did you not?
Speaker 8 (01:00:59):
Yes, Tommys tall burd No, man, them boys cooking, them
boys bottling. So I was rooting for him. You know,
sad to see Tygers go down, but man, they play hard.
They made it to the finals. I'm looking forward to see,
you know, the boys get back healthy and making them
to sit down.
Speaker 1 (01:01:10):
And you guys gotta take that baton and like run.
Speaker 8 (01:01:13):
We gotta hold up by end of the bargain. Man
on the grid iron, on the field, I think we
would this year. I think we would this year. We
gotta shit, we got a real good chance. Like I said,
we just got to go out there and prove ourself
every day.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
You're finding your way around here too.
Speaker 8 (01:01:24):
A little bit, a little bit. Just got a new
crib by the moving moving man. Yeah, was he that
you got to have a house officially a resident in Indianapolis?
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
No, man, you like it so far? I love it. Yeah. Yeah,
we're gonna you're gonna like it. It's a good time.
But we gotta go put out. We gotta go put
up pay at his place sometime too. If you pay
before put put who put up? Hey, he's got a farm.
He got a farm, just got farm.
Speaker 8 (01:01:46):
Oh, he got money, light there, he got out here.
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
You didn't put up pay macomb.
Speaker 8 (01:01:51):
I didn't, man, I didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:01:53):
Hey, Gret you see you man? Yes? Good, that's mooney right, yes, sir, Yeah,
I appreciate it many.
Speaker 9 (01:01:58):
G if you put up, Hey, it is farm yet
you say, oh nah, I want to rod some horses though,
want I hope you got some horses.
Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
He's got this big farm out there. He's got everything
you need. Hey, mooney, great to see you. Many great
conversations mooney right there, everybody with us from the cold
secondary had to pick earlier today Colts in their joint practice.
You get the Packers coming up on Thursday, and then
preseason game number two that is on Saturday. That always
good to hang with you, man. We'll do it again soon.
So enjoy that new house. Mooney, everybody right there,
