Speaker 1 (00:00):
Meantime, Andy Moore Automotive Group, Pieline friend of the show,
big time Brewers fan, but I'm sure incredibly active on
his gig today. With the Colts cutting down, the NFL
cut down for that matter, and a lot of the
names that are being bounced around, Joel A. Erikson of
The Star joins us, We'll start with the latest, and
that is the Colts finally saying all right, you're talented,
(00:23):
but you can't stay healthy, and a local product Juju
Brentz ends up getting cut loose this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, ultimately, that's that's my understanding is that that was
the decision that they made, was that they didn't want
to deal with the injuries anymore. He's obviously had, he's
obviously had a lot. He's played eleven games in two years.
He's had just a continuing onslought of injuries. The position.
I think, I think there's also something to be said
(00:53):
here for maybe the kind of cornerback that that lou
and Arumo is looking for, because you know, he's brought
in Xavier Howard, they traded for McKay Blackman last night,
and then you know the other piece of news that
that I just I just got along with others, was
that they're they're gonna work out Mike Hilton here on Wednesday.
It seems like he wants veterans who are used to
(01:16):
playing in a scheme like his that's going to change
stuff around and uh and and do different things game
to game. I also think he they seemed like a
shorter corner, maybe not a longer, you know, slower corner
like Brent's. Is just giving Wally's profile, black Men's profile
some of these guys are bringing in. So part of it,
(01:37):
I think is just that they got a new defensive
coordinator and he needs different things to the cornerback position.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
So I asked this a little bit earlier too, and
you know, an hour difference may change the dynamic. But
I'd ask, if you know, going out and and you know,
bringing in Howard and trading for black Men and you know,
working out Hilton and now making the decision on Brent's
was it more about just having bodies in the secondary
(02:02):
or more about the ultimate voice of lou Anarumo being
heard by this Colts team and what he wants.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
And I think it's the latter, is it not? In
this case?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah? I think so, because Brince. I mean Brince was
healthy enough to play in the final preseason game. Jalen Jones.
He was. He didn't play in the last preseason game,
but he was healthy enough to play, you know, in
the UH he was healthy enough to play in the
first couple of drives in the air that sorry in
the in the in the in practices last week. So
(02:35):
he seems like he's on his way back as well.
It does seem like Louis Arumo wants something different from
his corners, and the other thing is he wants to
play a lot of them. I think they're gonna play
a ton of dying coverage and to do that you
need a lot of cover guys. And I think that's
the other thing is if you're gonna play dime, that
means you have two slot corners, so you can't just
(02:55):
depend on Kenny Moore. And in black Man, they got
another guy who can play on the inside. And if
they end up signing Mike Hilton, that'd be another guy
who could play on the inside.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Do you know?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
And he may not because obviously you were covering the Colts.
But did lou and Arumo have a voice as it
seems he has now as to what he wants in
his personnel and Cincinnati, especially in the latter years, as
he clearly does in your number one here.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
I think that, just based on what we've seen from
the Colts, I think that Cincinnati was less likely to
heed maybe his what he wanted, just because it seems
like he wants experienced cornerbacks. He wants experienced cornerbacks, people
who've been in a lot of situations. They gave him
a very young secondary the last couple of years in
Cincinnati and let some players move on. It seems to
(03:46):
me so far that the Colts are a little more
all in on what Anna Rumo wants then maybe he
got with the Bengals the last two seasons.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Yeah, it's it's interesting because the way they paint it
and talk to a specific guy over there often is
that maybe he didn't get the type of personnel he
wanted and that led to the decline. But it seems
like from free agency to moving on up to the
start of the season, he's getting a lot and being
able to mold this the way he absolutely wants it.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Here. Yeah, we've never seen Chris Ballard attack the cornerback
position like this. They keep adding players, and then when
another player gets hurt, they add more players. And now
they've they've moved on from Brent's. We've never seen him really.
We've seen him make the opportunistic signing before, where you get,
you know, a Xavier Roads on the Chief, where you
(04:40):
get a discount averse to Stefan Gilmore, who's who. Those
guys ended up being more valuable than what they paid
for them. But we haven't seen him just kind of
go after this position.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
You know.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
They they anted up to beat out the Saints and
get our various award and since then they just keep
keep acquiring cornerbacks.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Joey Erickson of The Star, it's cut down time for
the Colts and some names of interest that are bouncing around,
and again if you're just joining us. Juju Brintz was
waived by the Colts, and Mike Hilton, the veteran defensive back,
is going to be worked out tomorrow. Mackay Blackman as
who they traded for last night, as was reported by Joel,
and just a whole change the dynamic going on in
(05:22):
that particular secondary, if not the entirety of the team.
Joel July Woods waived and I thought that when he
was at third round selection coming out as a rookie,
that this guy was going to do some really nice things.
I like thought about him in terms of a combination
at that moment of maybe a Dwayne Allen and a
(05:43):
Kobe Fleener, and the guy could never stay healthy enough
to justify any of those comparisons. Is there were a
spot in the NFL world for him? Do you think
moving forward someplace else?
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I think he's going to get a chance. So someone's
going to take a chance on that athletics. As he
did have seven catches in the preseason, which I know,
I know for most fans that's what they see is
a preseason, So it looked like Woods was more productive
than say a Will Mallory. But if you were out
at training camp every day, you know, Mallory made far
more catches in training camp this season. I think Woods
(06:20):
Woods is going to get his chance. You know, I
thought the same thing, especially you know, he had some
hiccups as a rookie, but he still had twenty five
catches for more than three hundred yards and three touchdowns.
And there were a couple of times that you you're
watching him and you go, you know what this guy
could work down the line. It just never panned out
because the injuries that might be that might be another
(06:41):
piece of this, uh this deadline that that is maybe
the the overarching narrative right now is just this. This
team is no longer counting on players or keeping players
who who cannot stay healthy and are not for for
whatever reason, they're not able to stay healthy because Brent Woods,
(07:02):
they placed Jalen Carlys on on IR with a designation
to return. He's early in his career, but that's how
it's gone for him so far. It does feel to
me like they're they're they're kind of trying to make
a shift there away from those players.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Joel, one of these days, in the not so distant future,
I foresee you writing an article on the draft class
of twenty twenty three. Have you cobbled any of that
together so far? I know, I know that it probably
doesn't matter to the cult. They want to win and
that they prioritize that this season, but that's not too
long ago, and it does not look good.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I I was just looking at that, you know, the
Brent's news broke right before. Yeah, I got on the phone,
but I was just looking at that and if if
you look at that, the best player out of that
class is Jalen Jones, and it's it's really not close.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
So Josh Downs, Josh Downs, right, Josh Dawn, Joshdowns, Zeland, Jones.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
And well, and I want I want to mention too.
I throw this out to Joel on the fly.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
Here my apologies because all this is like evolving as
you're coming on and talk with me right now. But
it just occurred to me to look this up and
uh it, it slaps you in the face because it
wasn't that long.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Yo. Well, I mean, yeah, the as far as it
coming coming through quickly, like that's how I missed Josh.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Downs exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
But yeah, Downs and Jones. And then you know there
were a ton of picks in that draft, a ton
of injuries in here too. You look at this, you
look at this thing. Anthony Richardson dealt with it, has
dealt with injuries. Brent's injuries, yeah, Uh, Blake Freeland injured
this year. Uh, Daniel Scott injured his first two years.
Will Mallory's had some stuff. Evan Hall looked good until
he suffered a pretty bad knee injury as a rookie
(08:50):
Jake Witt retired. Jake Quit retired because of a hip injury.
It's it's it's it's a class that that does not
continues to look worse the more that they the more
that they keep going and end up having to make
some of these decisions.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Yeah, you stare at that for a minute. That's not
one you're gonna put on the resume right there. And again,
I know that that's not their focus right now, is
to get this season going and win this season. But man,
that is ugly as it gets right there, looking at
it with basically two guys, I guess as of right
now that you can really say anything whatsoever about so
(09:33):
not good, not good at all.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
No, No, you want your draft classes to do, to
do more than that, and and you know, really, really,
Josh Downs, it seems like it's gonna have to carry that.
I'm interested to see what happens with Dylan Jones this year.
With all of these veteran cornerbacks possibly being brought in.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Anybody else floating around out there, you think maybe the
Colts would have interest in, especially if there's somebody with
name recognition. And I know this is all happening all
at once, and you know, the Hilton news just popped
as well. But is there anybody else out there that
you think they may peauk an interest?
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Uh, positionally more than than than an individual player, because
it's hard, it's it is hard to keep track of
what other teams are doing when you're when you're focused
on the Colts and there's you know, literally hundreds of
names going by.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Yea, you know, uh position tackle, sure, that's offensive tackle
for sure.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
You know they've got Luke Tnuda there, But I don't
know that that he was going to be in that spot.
He wasn't playing over Freeland before Freeland, uh, you know,
fractured his leg. So I think I think an offensive tackle.
You can see though no one has offensive tackles, which
makes that even more interesting because you know you've got
to get one. There have been like six or seven
(10:50):
of those guys traded in the last couple of days,
you know, backup swing tackle types, guys who maybe weren't
going to make the roster have gotten traded instead of
being instead of being released and picked up on waivers.
So that's that's one interesting thing. Looks like the Colt
roster has just come out. And then the other place
I think is linebacker, and I think we've all known
(11:11):
that all all off season as they kind of wanted
some players and didn't get it. Some names here for
you as this roster comes out that are released that
will be interesting to people. Khalil Herbert at running back released.
Uh Lakwan Treadwell the wide receiver. I think we all
kind of knew that. But that's that's one of the
veterans that's released. Looking through here, there Listens Bentley the
(11:37):
fourth also released, So that's another that's a that's a
running back position that looks like it's gonna go with
three for now. Josh Silves. Yeah. So I there's still
Wave Waved injured for Matis Trahiel, which is interesting because
I thought he wasn't kicking very much on on Saturday.
He wasn't gonna make the roster, but that's interesting that
(11:58):
he's injured. Yeah. So that's that's that's the full list.
Brand's being the biggest news, but there's there's some other
ones in there. Khalil Herbert just I think flat out
got beat out by Tyler Goodson.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Yeah, and you kind of wonder maybe not so much
for him, But you kind of wonder, you know, about
some of these other guys that they end up on
the practice squad. But you made a good point, Joel
about the offensive line. It's clear to me you got
to kind of visit some situations here going back because
I don't know about you, but with this team, I mean,
(12:31):
it's hard to rely on a relative level of health.
And you don't question a lot of the starters. There's
still a little bit but not a great deal, but
certainly that depth is something you would think that they
would need to fortify before the start of the season.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Well, it's also something that Chris Ballard tends to keep
more of than we think every year. Every time I
can do a roster projection, I think to myself, I've
got to put at least nine on here, because he's
going to keep these guys, and then he ends up,
you know, keeping ten sometimes. So there's there's some guys
like that, there's some some things like that where you're going,
(13:09):
he definitely is going to want more. Now they might
like Lutanuda. I just am kind of going off the
fact that I thought Blake Freeland maybe wasn't having the
best camp and they were playing Tonuda behind him that
they might go out and look for one they like
Jalen Travis. I know they like Jalen Travis. They they
played Dalton Tucker at center because they like to have
a third person who can snap the ball on the roster.
(13:30):
But yeah, I could only find eight guys, and so
I think when I did my roster projection, I put
tackle to be named later on it because I wasn't
sure you know who that player would be.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
So Joey Erickson at the Star doing a fine job
of giving us the news as this news is evolving
coming in right now and the Andy Moore Automotive Group
plot line. I asked this question a little bit earlier,
and I'm going to ask you the same thing. I
happen to think Leatu Latu is the most important defensive
player for the Colts this season because of the reasons
(14:04):
we just talked about and what they're doing in the
secondary and what they have in the secondary. I think
to really get the most out of this defense, he
is going to have to be a consistent factor coming
off the edge.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
But if I'm.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Asking you, who do you think is going to be
the single most important player defensively for the Colts this season.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, I think it's a lot too. I think you're right.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Did I talk to you into it or did you
feel competent?
Speaker 2 (14:34):
I just think I've kind of always been I've always
been a going back for a long time. That's saying
that the thing that this team really needed was sort
of the the difference making war Daddy edge rusher, because
you know, it makes Buttner better if he's not the
only force player in there, and really it makes the
(14:55):
cornerbacks and everything better. Now. I think Cam Biningham you
can make a case for, because I know necessarily like
what they have at free safety beyond him. But I
still think the thing that could give this team a
ceiling as a defense is having an addresser who really
makes a difference and forces quarterbacks to get off their spot.
You know, Quity pay Samson, Ebiccom, those guys, they do
(15:18):
a good job picking up sacks, or at least they
have so far. Ebcom coming off the torn achilles in
training camp of kind of the second efforts sack. To
get the second effort sack, you need somebody driving the
quarterback out of the out of the pocket. And I
think that's what. That's why they need lots to do
this year.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah, I just I think that if this defense is
at its best, and it's not just here or there,
it's it's a consistent basis and hopefully hopefully you get
that because it's been since Robert mathis, then that consistency
certainly has been there.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
And you know, to me.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
That that is as impactful we talked about the quarterback
position and the way that it has been since Law
or the way it was since Manning, but maybe even
more impactful is just the lack of a consistent threat
of the pass rize since Robert mathis around here. That's
that's an amazing fact that sometimes Joe I think gets
covered up because there have been so many quarterback issues here.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yeah, you know, and they've done it. They've done a
better job, I think, or at least for a little
while there, they did a better job at finding, you know,
something like a reasonable substitute. You know, justin Houston had
a couple of good years there. They got some stuff
out of Autrey they had they did.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
A good job.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
They didn't they didn't get like exactly the type of
rush Arou I'm talking about, but they had guys to
get Ebiccom's first season here as one, they've done a
better job of finding guys who can close the gap
between not having that guy and not having it at all,
and they have it quarterback. So I think that's the
other reason that it hasn't been quite as noticeable. But
it's absolutely true. You want to have the difference making
(16:58):
franchise guy that's always there.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Did Isaiah Land did that surprise you? Did Wesley French
surprise you earlier the day as you reported as well?
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Uh, Wesley French had Wesley French was a guy who'd
played kind of on the on the third line all
all through training camp, and I think when Dalton Tucker
was taking snaps on on Saturday, that was a clear
sign there that maybe he didn't come back from the
injury the same way. And then with Isaiah Land, Isaiah Land,
I think maybe he doesn't fit this defense the same
(17:31):
way that he fit the last one. It seems to
me that that Anna Rumo value size and power at
most of the defensive line spots other than the one
Lossy plays, And if you're going to be a smaller player,
you have to be they have to consider you to
be a player who's really really going to make a
difference as a pass rusher. Even Trey Hendrickson, who he
(17:52):
had in Cincinnati, is not a you know, slight of build,
speed type guy he is. He's a lot bigger guy.
I covered him when he got drafted in New Orleans.
He's two hundred and sixty pounds type player. I think
that's more Van Rumo's I think that's more of Van
Rumo's speed.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
Joe A.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Erickson of the Stars on the Andy Moro on amount
of group plotline. We'll let you go coming up here
in just a second. I know you have a lot
of work to be done. There's no doubt about that.
I kind of look at again this team and another
valued starts of the season and your thoughts on this
Miami team, especially coming in where you get a secondary
(18:32):
that has banged up and they've also dealt with guys
no longer there. It would seem like if there was
an ideal moment for Daniel Jones to get that shot
and to be a difference maker that they hope for
him to be, that that's a decent matchup, and I
know we're still a little far away from that, but
the level of importance, plus the fact you have Daniel
(18:54):
Jones getting that shot to take advantage. Is that a
decent combination for this Colts team in the week one?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
I I think it's it's good from an offensive standpoint,
we're we're gonna kind of see the defense though right away.
You know, I think that you know, they they've they've
taken some hits there. Mike McDaniel's taken some hits to
his reputation, but that's that's still a guy to me
that is uh that that can take advantage of you.
And he's got speed on the outside. You know, he's
(19:23):
got a ton of speed on the outside to deal with.
So it's in one way, I do think it's a
it's an easier matchup for the offense. Defensively, I think
there's there's maybe more of a a way where you're
you're gonna be tested. I also just noticing we're talking,
we've been talking about all the cornerbacks they kept. Jonathan Edwards,
(19:45):
the undrafted free agent from Tulane, who I know that
I know the assistant coaches really like him. I don't
think he's gonna play all that much right away with
all these veterans being around, but they kept him initially,
So that's interesting.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
Alright.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
In closing here, I know you had to answer probably
a lot of social media questions about this, but what
are your thoughts other than a third string rookie quarterback
in Riley Leonard? Is there anything else there, any vision
that they have whatsoever?
Speaker 4 (20:16):
Or is it just as I described it?
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Uh, he's you know, he's he's a lot like he's
a lot like Sam Ellinger. I think he's he's a
developmental player and and I think he can probably like
you probably look at him as somebody who can develop
into a really good backup in this league, somebody who
can count on that type of player. I think some
of the preseason stuff, again, you see the preseason games,
(20:41):
you get one impression. I think if you saw him
on a day in day out basis, you see where
you know, some of the accuracy, some of the the
arm strength over the middle is something that that's not
really there in terms of being that there's a reason
that he played only the third team snaff But there's
also a reason that that that battle for the number
three job wasn't really a battle, and he got all
(21:03):
of them almost immediately. They started out with him and
Jason Bean, you know, splitting reps, and then it went
to him. He's a guy. He reminds me a lot
of Ellinger. He reminds me a lot of Ellinger, and
that he's gonna work really hard. He's gonna know the offense,
He's probably got some arm development to do over the
next couple of years.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
The one thing that he has and I always think,
and I know it's accommodation Fair Hope, Alabama, And you
know his previous relationship with with Philip Rivers. That's who
he kind of reminds me of, not as a player,
but just his his personality, because he does bring a
level of control as a rookie that I think is
(21:47):
in particular fairly uncommon in the NFL at that position.
He does bring that.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Yeah, he's got that. It's just you're just like if you,
like I said, if you watch him in practice, there's
just a few two menu throws that end up hitting
the ground. Yeah, And like I said, the arm strength
thing is also a little bit of an issue. He's
a lot like Sam Ellinger. There's there's no way around it.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Joey Ericson of The Star kind enough to join us
at a very busy time as the Colts make cuts,
and we'll see what other adjustments they may have to.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
The roster before it's said and done.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Joe, not even any Brewers conversation here, man, my bad.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Nope. So what's going on with the Colt.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
We got a lot of focus. We'll do it again
leading up to week number one. Man, it's good to
have you on, thanks brother.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Joey ericson of the stars on the Andy Moore Automotive
Group potline, the Andy Moore Automotive Group plotline, Let's bring
you on, also the postgame show host, also a caller
to the j MV takeover following preseason Game three. During
the play by play on Fox fifty nine, Greg Rakestraw
joins us, I'm trying to really kind of spark up
(22:57):
a little conversation about cut down days.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
So far, aren't that being specific?
Speaker 1 (23:02):
But we all know that it's still a non specific thing,
even with the cuts they are going to be made.
And frankly, Greg, there's not a great deal of drama
in what's going on with this today around here.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
No, just because you know you've heard me say this
before during the course of the offseason, I thought there
were the few most massive questions you could have, and
everything else was seemingly pretty cut and dry. You know
who is a certain quarterback's going to be. Now we
know who that is going to be. And now the
other question we're going to answer to for about nineteen
weeks are you a playoff team? And we will start
(23:32):
finding out next week. But no, there simply was not
that so kind of blotted out the sun. The quarterback
drama that there frankly wasn't a lot of drama in
terms of tight end, running back, wide receiver, using positions
people tend to care about. Maybe there's some drama about
a cornerback, maybe there's some drama about a backup offensive lineman.
(23:52):
With the fifty three man roster, John I thought was
pretty well set going to the training camp, and nothing
has changed.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Greg graystraw And and Andy Moore autam online.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
So the focus they have clearly.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Had since lou Aniroumo came on board is in that secondary.
Has it been more especially recently, more about necessity with
bodies or.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
More about maybe Ana Roumo and you're number.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
One dictating the tempo for what he wants in an
individual especially in that secondary.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
What do you think.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
I think it's more about bodies, you know. I mean
you look at the injuries to you know, Juju Brentz
to Jalen Jones. Obviously he was justin Waller for the season.
You lose Hunter Rohler for the season, You lose Kenny
Moore for a part of training camp. You know, Chris
Leamons was the guy that came in and you know,
was late to camp, but at least knew the previous system.
Was the guy that Chris Ballard knew played frankly well
(24:47):
in training camp, but looks like, you know, maybe he's
a practice squad candidate at best. So you know, is
Lou going to have his you know, fingerprint on the defense?
Will of course it's going to be his system. But
I think this is more about just adversity opportunity because
they were such a mass unit cornerback for a good
junk of training camp.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
I had mentioned this to Stephen Holder yesterday and he
went with Mooney Chavarius Ward, and I thought that that
was a good call as far as the most important
individual defensively. We all get caught up of the offense
and the quarterback debate and really until further notice, until
we see something we kind of know what that's going
to be. But we've rarely talked about the defense. And
(25:28):
while I agree that that's a good choice, I still
say the evolution of Leatu Latu and the jumping he
can make after his rookie season and what he can
do consistently in quarterback pressure, to me, that makes him
the most important individual defensively.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
What do you think I would agree with that? You know,
And one of the things that struck me as interesting
a training camp was that Latu Latsu JT Tree Molowau
And after saying that for three consecutive games, I've now
got that last name down Cale, you know.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
Them more time help me out on.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
That J T two E moloow five, J You've nailed it.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
See you.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
I need to be looking at it. Did you have
to look at it a lot of times to first
thought it? How'd you do the process?
Speaker 3 (26:15):
I just had to say it. I just had to.
You know. It's kind of like they would teach Suther
swimming souther Indiana John throwing the defense. You figured out
how you don't uh, and so that's how it played out.
But you would see those two guys, and you would
see it in the guys that are going to get
cut looks like in terms of Isaiah Land and Richard
Little from UAB And basically it was a situation where
(26:36):
those guys were almost kind of like I wouldn't say
warm up separately, but they were like different from the
other defensive alignment in the words, they almost kind of
strike you as like what you would have in terms
of like, you know, relievers that would get one out
in baseball. You know, you know, they kind of their
own thing. You have one job, go get the quarterback.
(26:56):
And so yes, uh, you know, if Laotu lots to
go from near misses to getting more sacks, that changes
the dynamics for everybody involved on that football team. So
I think the improvement of the defense will be mirrored
by what Laatu Latsu can do with his one skill,
(27:16):
Go get the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Colts cut Down Day is happening throughout the NFL. In fact,
we'll get some of the updates with Joel A. Erickson
in less than an hour from the Star on the
Andy More Automotive Group potline. Greg Rakestraw, he is with
us conventional wisdom has been with Daniel Jones as the
Week one starter, that a lot more can be made better,
(27:38):
especially with the underneath game and the shorter passing routes.
A lot more accuracy and efficiency there. But all of
a sudden, Alec Pierce will be eliminated. You take him
out of the equation with the deep ball. Is that
necessarily the case in your opinion?
Speaker 3 (27:54):
I don't think so. Now will he lead the league
in yards per catch by five yards the way that
he last year? No, But one of the things that
you would hear him talk about and Shane Siken talk about,
you know, we kind of label him as just a
deep threat guy, and both Alegance channel like, no, we
feel he can hear himself in that case, can be
can be an every down receiver, can be an all
(28:17):
fastest receiver. Well, we're gonna find out again. I still
think he can be a deep thread. I don't think
Jones is as good with the deep ball as Richardson is, obviously,
but there's it's just going to go out of the offense.
You know, let's think about you know, Minshew was kind
of a guy where you didn't think the deep ball
was there, But the last guy before that, you're like, well,
the guy can't throw a deep ball would be Philip Rivers.
(28:39):
You know, this offense still had from time to time
deep shots. Every offense in the National Football League has
that Fierce will be that guy. But now this will
be his chance to showcase he can be a route runner,
underneath guy and more of an intermediate receiver as well.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Most important aspect of this team. Let's just say against Miami.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
In Week one.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
We've got a week and a half until it's officially underway,
but most important aspect for this team, where do you start?
Speaker 3 (29:10):
You know, it sounds rudimentary, and it sounds like what
the Colts have focused on. But the one thing that
you know, I think most people know not to put
too much stock into preseason results. But the one thing
that you just can't replicate in training camp because you're
not going to fully tackle the guy or you're not
going to replicate it in a preseason game because he
(29:31):
had one carry his ability to run the football. It's
ability to have Jonathan Taylor consistently run the football. He
is still, without doubt, your best offensive weapon. And if
he can be a home run hitter and be a
guy that's in the vicinity of one hundred yards every game.
He makes everyone around him better. So to me, that's
(29:55):
where you start with the base. If he's getting twenty carries,
if he's getting a hundred year yards, if he's going
for a big player to every game, this is going
to be a whole lot better football team.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
John is Greg Graystraw.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
He's on the Andy Moore at a motive group, pileline
and little college in high school coming up in his
second where you'd all surprised. And we'll see if he
ends up back on the practice squad or if there's
any interest anyplace else but somebody you called a lot
of his games. He's been on the show a number
of times. You actually talked to him on this show
once upon a time when I was out a year ago,
Carson Steele was released by the Chief. So see what
(30:30):
ultimately he goes. I haven't seen anything new as far
as if he's going back to the practice squad or
if there's any other interest. But would that move in
Kansas City surprising?
Speaker 3 (30:40):
Well, I can't say that I have studied their roster
to give you an intelligent answer. You know, injuries played
a part in him getting a look last year when
he was first brought on by the Chiefs last year.
He was brought on as a guy that thought would
be a fullback. So I would think offenses that years
a fullbacker in h back, that's where Carson would be
(31:01):
the best. Ones that are kind of power rushing attacks
where Carson be the best. My thought would be is
that the Chiefs would probably like to have him back
on the practice squad if he clears waivers and has
the opportunity.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Is Greg with us?
Speaker 1 (31:16):
How about Week one of high school football this past
Friday night. I didn't think there were like dynamic upsets,
but I thought the quality of football, especially in Week
one starting out, was pretty good across the board and
across the state.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
I would agree with that. I think there were some
games that were closer than expected. And I'll tell you
the game that I had was closer than I thought
it would be between LC and LAN and Land winning
with a second left to go to in that game
thirty four to twenty seven. That was an LC team
that had a lot of question marks, you know, kind
of coming into the season. So good on them for
making that rivalry game competitive and if they can replicate
(31:53):
that the rest of the way the long term, that
team is going to be just fine. I think Carmel
beating Fishers by twenty five got a lot of people's attention,
and it's kind of once thing improved to you. Hey,
Kevin gre actually good at his job. I mean, he's
coaching at a high school level. There aren't that many
that are better than him. There were some upsets across
the state, you know, Lures losing in week one, Central
(32:16):
Catholic getting beat at home in week one by Seeger
caught some folks attention. I think in the local area.
The results were what we kind of thought they would be.
Maybe Avon Beaten Decatur Central was a bit of a surprise,
even though Rob Gibson's doing a good job over there
in Hendricks County. But again, the results were most of
(32:36):
the thought they would be. Maybe the margins were a
little closer in some of those games.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Is it the guy from Owen Valley?
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Originally he was formerly at Owen Valley, played at Marion
and I want to say former South Putnam guy. I
know Putnham County. I hope I gave him the right
alma mater. But yes, he was the head coach at
ob before taking the avon.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
Job Brownsburg and they beat a top rank.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
National team in Spaulding this past Friday, and then you
get a matchup in week number two with Cathedral.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
What are you thinking about that?
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Well, Cathedral, we'll kind of see Cathedral one and Ben Davis.
Don't apologize for it. The store that Cathedral Ben Davis
game was eight nothing and it's a Ben Davis team
that ain't gonna have some problems scoring at times this year,
and so we're going to learn a lot more about Cathedral.
But at the same time, it's now Cathedral for the
(33:29):
first time in a handful of years that's not playing
sixth A, that's going to play in five A. So
one of those games, if it doesn't move well for Cathedral,
you just kind of shrug your shoulders, all right, we're
going to beat these guys this year.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
Don't have to.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
The only issue for Cathedral is you're in the same
sexual as newpal who might be amongst the best five
or six teams in the state, regardless of classification. So
good down Brownsburg for winning that game. But we'll kind
of get the more of a true indication as to
how they stack up against the best teams in Indiana
coming up on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
All I still mentioned Decatur Central and they get New
Pal coming up this weekend too.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Correct, and that had been the stopping point for them
in previous years in five A. That is not the
case this year because again the Cator Central is in
six A. I think that both Holson was a little
bit of an injury their quarterback, and so that kind
of gets your attention again.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
I think the Cator.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
Central can have a really good year and they largely
play five A competition, including New Pal this week, the
five A competition in this week on because it's the
mid state conference they are in. I thought putting that
Avon game on the books early was great for them
because that very much will be indicative of the type
of team they would see come postseason time because they're
(34:40):
in the same sectional. North Central LC and l N
is the Cater Central for the next couple of years.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Greg Rayshaw's and the Andy Moore Automnive group plotline and
North Central won a football game on the high school
level for the first time in how long Friday.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
First time since October twenty twenty one, wow, thirty two
game losing streak. Frankly for a that they were better than.
That would indicate, you know, if you're the worst team
in the mix or a bad team in sit, say,
you're still better than the majority of teams that play
Indiana high school football. For buff last year, was they
really good for a team? They are much younger this year.
(35:16):
That was a game that I thought North Central would get.
I think North Central has a chance to be in
a neighborhood of five hundred, be a four or five
win team. They've got hambled in Southeastern coming into town
on Friday night, I think that game will be competitive,
and I think that I think the mix any more
compet to give it credit for you know, I had
Ellen on Friday night. They've got some great individual talent
(35:39):
in Zay Moore, in Lonchon Sales. They returned four starters defensively,
but they're young in other places too, And so I
kind of think that the top and bottom of the
sixteen mick maybe a little closer than they have been
in most years. And that's in brobrick is North Central
is a better team.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
So Greg Graystraw's of the Andy Moore Automotive Group plotline,
So Centergrove beat one on the East side. Warren gets
Warsaw coming up.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
On Friday.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
CG travels to Fort Wayne. Carol lost by seven to
Hamilton Southeastern. How do you size up that matchup.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
In terms of Center Grove up form? Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Center Grove. Center Grove should win again. You know, Center
Grove's offense was good, not great against Warren. Part of
that is again, Warren is really good on defense for
his second year. They're kind of a defensive first, you know,
type of team. Center Grove has a young quarterback, but
a very talented quarterback. So I think Center Grove is
(36:35):
a team that has a lot of room for growth
from the beginning of the season to the end of
the season. You know that game last year, Center Grove
basically and Carol played a half before storms came in
and center Grove was deemed to be the winner. Center
Grove should win that game. I think they will. I'm
not sure it's a blowout, but I took them to
win that game.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Agat to two and.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Noo hi Greg three nothing, ronc Over. How many in
your recollection three nothing wins?
Speaker 4 (37:06):
Do you remember in high school football recently?
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Not a lot. I think Sener Grove beat Ben Davis
four to three on a it had to be a
pair of safeties. About twenty or so years ago. I
just rattled off an eight to nothing game. I had
the state finals game ironically between Dwengger and Emmonsville Central
that was scoreless going to overtime a handful of years
ago in a four eight championship game. So they happen,
(37:30):
not often when the weather conditions are as nice as
their last Friday. Uh. But to me, the story of
that game was the fact that Ron Colly had been
playing Southport in their opener for many years, and you know,
that game went away just because Southport has not been
as competitive. Good on Dwinger for coming down to Indianapolis.
We talked about this a little bit more last year
(37:52):
than this year. But for many years the Summit Athletic
Conference had been a ten team league and you played
a full round robin, and those Fort Wayne schools did
not have the chance to compete against the Indianapolis schools
to kind of give them, you know, the barometer. All right,
this is what the postseason looks like. So good on
Dwinger for coming down here and playing that game. They
got beat. They'll be a better team because they played that.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Game hun night.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
I know that I was excited about getting AYU football
back off again with ODU, But where's the level of
excitement that you've noticed with Purdue the Barry Odemara ball
state and you know, anything, I guess anything is better
than what they witnessed a year ago, right, anything?
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Right? Basically, I think everybody acknowledges that Purdue football is
in a better place with Barry odom just because his
staff is more experienced. But I also think most are saying, listen,
what Kurt Signetti did last year in Bloomington was pretty otherworldly,
and I'm not sure anybody in West Lofiette expects that
(38:58):
the way their schedule works, you know, Franklish won their
first couple of games, and then if they can find
a way to win another game or two, it's probably
gonna be a good year for Barry. Again, what Kurt
dismast year in Bloomington was utterly remarkable. Most bother Maker
fans don't think that this team will come close to it,
but they think the groundwork is there for some success
(39:20):
in the not so distant future.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Are you, oh, do you We've talked about this before
when everybody complains about Kurt Signetti and the scheduling. We're
both on the same page because you do what you
do to get the job done, and there's a formula
for Signetti, whether it's in Bloomington or James Madison, that
has worked.
Speaker 4 (39:40):
Why go away from it.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Here's what I would say is this, John, it's a problem.
It's not a problem until it is. And I don't
think in the current playoff math that it's going to
be Folks. This is the reality of being in a
Big Boy Conference. You don't have to play that tough
of a three game non conference schedule when you play
(40:04):
nine league games. There's a lot of back and forth
when the SEC folks that say, hey, you know we're
we're playing more power teams than our non conference and
the the Big Ten response has basically been, yeah, you
play eight league games and you all play mercer the
week before Thanksgiving. These things sends you baling each other.
Speaker 4 (40:22):
Album.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Indiana made you know the College Tuall playoff last year
playing a very similar schedule. So if you know in
a two team playoff, you're not making it. In a
four team playoff, you're not making it in a twelve
team playoff, and it might be sixteen or held a
Big Ten team that wants to invite a third of
college football to the postseason. They're gonna make it again.
(40:44):
You have the immediate evidence from last year. So if
I you or to somehow say go eleven to one
or ten and two and not make the postseason, then
guess what you're looking at Changing your non conference schedule
to play it's better. But until that scenario plays out,
Indiana's perfectly fine doing it exactly as they did it
(41:07):
a season ago.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Nothing wrong with it. Notre Dame and Miami as well.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
By the way, Notre Dame goes to Miami and then
they're off, and then A and M Purdue and in Fayetteville.
I believe that game's in Failville right against Arkansas and
Boise stayed.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
But I have the Notre Dame schedule with it.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
I'll go call Kevin Bowen because I'm sure he does.
You'll have it, Yeah, yeah, call him, all right. Anyway, tough,
tough schedule, you would think, at least in the early
stages for the fighting Irish well, to be.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
Honest with you, because of those ACC games and Service
Academy games, Notre Dame has to go play that schedule.
Indiana does not. Indiana has those games handed to them
by being one of the two power brokers of college football.
It's just the way it works.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
Where are you Friday, Carmel and Westfield.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
So I'll see just how improved Nice seven Rights Carmel
Grayhounds are.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
Does a coach make Can a coach make that much difference?
Certainly on that level and in an immediate category.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
We saw it in week one, when you know, we'll
learn how good Fishers is in future weeks. We'll see
it again. Westfield, you know, was the runner up, didn't
miss the state finals by much. Brownsburg is number one
this week Westfield is number two. I think Westfield won
their opener twenty eight nothing if I if I recall correctly,
We're going to learn a lot about how good both
those teams are come Friday night, and even back to
(42:30):
last year again, Week two was an awful weather night,
and some teams got started and just called their games early.
Some teams came back and finished. Carmel led that game,
went to the next day and got beat and then
they ended up finishing three and seven, and hence, you know,
made a coaching change. But to answer your question. I've
(42:51):
been around Kevin Wright teams. Yeah, he's that good. He
makes that big of a difference. That coach is that good.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
John great, great, Sean. Here's on the Andy Moore Automotive Group.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
Potline.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Well done, there's always great call by the way on
Saturday too, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
I had an alternate thought that I may say for
future calls. You know, I try to always have like
a theme and bring stuff in. So since so many
cults had a Breakout performance and it was an eighty show,
I almost requested swing Out sister on the program, so
I may save that for a future.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
There's actually Breakout is their signature, but there's another one
that's even better. I think it's really like their second
I can't remember off the top of my head what
it is right now, but it's pretty solid too.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
Well, pretty much Breakout was the you know, the exclusive
you know track in my mind that I ever treated
to that band.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
So nice, well done.
Speaker 1 (43:49):
All right, I'll be looking forward on Saturday if you're around,
See you, buddy.
