Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are proud because he's going to be here this
weekend The Circle City, I believe, nine seasons at SNL
actor comedian, most notably over the summer was a part
of Half a Happy Gilmore Too along with Adam Sandler.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Kevin Nealan joins us.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Now, Hey, Kevin, thank you very much for joining us
on the show today.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:20):
It's my pleasure.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
I'm doing great, Thank you, thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
We are We're doing sports and maybe a little bit
of lawn and garden stuff. If you got any lawn
and garden issues, any questions, maybe you can lob at
our expert here.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well, I'm trying to combine the two into one. Yeah.
My my problem is this.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
You know, I play carn hole and the grass grows
up into the hole, so it makes it harder to
get the bag in there.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Well, Pat, do you have an answer a solution Kevin's issue.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I do talk to the landscaper a good amount. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Maybe if I got more, maybe if I hit the
target more, they wouldn't grow.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
That's actually a good point. Maybe a little more, a
little more practice there.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
I have this Kevin, this vision of Kevin Nelan doing
his own yard work, Is that true?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Is my vision accurate?

Speaker 6 (01:20):
No?

Speaker 4 (01:21):
You know what I I growing up, I love doing
yard work. I would rake the leaves. I lived in Connecticut,
I would cut the grass.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
We had a very.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Small yard, but my father had one of those sit
down lawnmowers from Sears Ken Moore, and you know it,
it looked like we were sitting on a kid's.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Toy, you know.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Oh yeah, yes, that's the extent.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Of my lawn care right there.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Well, it's what's funny because the lawnmowers you're talking about
had like a mower deck that was like two inches wide. Right,
it took you about three hours Tom maybe an acre
something like that back then.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
That's right, that's right.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It's Kevin Nealan, who's going to be at Helium Comedy
Club beginning tonight and this weekend too.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
How's everything going?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
And I was always curious somebody that has your resume
and what you've accomplished so far in your career, do
you still love going out and doing really how you
made your stamp in doing the stand up comedy?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
You still enjoyed that much?

Speaker 6 (02:24):
I really do.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
I never stopped doing stand up, even throughout Saturday Night
Live and Weeds and a Man with a Plan and
all those Adam Sandler films, because it's really what I
started out doing. It's all I ever wanted to do
was stand up comedy. So yeah, I still love it,
and I always love coming back to Indianapolis too. I
always have a good time here. I think it's the
people get me here, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, Well, and that's good because we're on the same page.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
I'm glad they get me because I have nowhere else
to go.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
I'm like Richard gear an officer and a gentleman, Kevin,
I've got nowhere else to go.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
I'm glad they get me here.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
I am Hey.

Speaker 7 (03:01):
Kevin, Brent Holverson here man. Hey, welcome to Indiana, my friend.
It's it's an honor to have you on the.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Show here too.

Speaker 7 (03:06):
But hey, tell, I want to hear a little bit
about you were with David Letterman show before you got
onto Saturday Night Live, right, I want to hear some
good David Letterman stories you get any of those?

Speaker 4 (03:16):
You mean I was on the show as a guest,
you were you.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Were a regular with on him back in the mid eighties, right, Well, I.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Would I would go on once in a while, because
you know, we were doing SNL on the same building
and his show is down below us on a different floor.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
So if some guests.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
Bailed out at the last minute, they would call me
up to come down there.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
So I did that pretty often.

Speaker 7 (03:41):
Okay, I remember seeing it and you're, you know again,
just David Letterman, a fellow Indiana who'sier here. And I
didn't know if you have any great stories about that,
but I love your friend, and I do.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Actually have a story about that, Brent, all right, I
haven't seen David Letterman since, you know, the days of
the Late Show with David Letterman, and every time you
go on that show, you really don't never talk to
him unless you're right at the desk there. You know,
he doesn't come backstage, and we all know that kind
of personality he had that, you know, And so I

(04:13):
ran into him last December, and he could not have
been happier to see me.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
He was raving and complimented. He left and right. So
I was really flattered about that.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
Well, maybe that's because you spent more time back in
Indiana hometown. He kind of you know lost that, Yes,
that a whole thing he had.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, you love you love Indiana more than he does now, Kevin, Right,
I guess so, I don't know. No, he's he's still
he's still entrenched obviously with racing here in Indiana as well.
I was going to ask you this, Kevin Neilan joins
us Helium Comedy Club that is coming up this weekend downtown.
You got to check him out. Good dude, great show

(04:49):
tickets available right now? What do you most note Indiana for? Like,
when do you think about Indiana? What comes to mind first?
And be kind?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Okay, be kind? Well what comes to mind first?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Here?

Speaker 2 (05:02):
That's the way to put them on the spotter.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
John, Well, you know there's there's the course of this
Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yeah right, yeah, you're a Notre Dame. Yeah, yeah, you're not.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
What comes to mind immediately for me when I hear
the name Indianapolis is a couple of years ago, I
was working.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
At this club and it was in the winter and
they just had.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Some sleet and it was frozen on the sidewalk, so
it was black ice. And I got out of the
car to go into that comedy club, Pallium Club, and
I slipped on the ice and I hit my head
so hard.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I thought I was.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
I thought it was over for me on the sidewalk
and I get up and I walk into that club
and I don't know if I have a concussion or not.
And so the EMTs came and they checked me out
and they said I didn't have a concussion, but man,
I was hurt and I did two shows back to
back and I had to lean up against the wall.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Well it turns out I had whipped like the.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Next eight weeks, so that's kind of what I remember white,
but this weekend, so I want to make some good
memories to kind of kind of gave over that.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
So how is it?

Speaker 5 (06:11):
How's it feel to own a comedy club in Indianapolis?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Now that? Yeah? Did you add that to?

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Will that be on your uh your list of things
to talk about this weekend at Helium?

Speaker 2 (06:28):
The last time, I'm.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Trying to forget about it, Brent, and you know you
you brought it up. So now I got into my
mind again, so I.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Got yeah, I can't help it. Yeah, I can't help
But that's uh Kevin neeling with us. Yeah, obviously this
year this summer happy to go more too. After a
lot of years, came back out and you were a
part of that Adam Sandler effort.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Once again, what did you think about the end result?

Speaker 1 (06:51):
And I will tell you this, Kevin, I had I
bring this up all the time. I I've talked about
this with Sandler before he was actually for the Super
Bowl when here is Andy and we're talking about how
special happy Gilmour was for him. How special was it
for you to be a part of that and to

(07:12):
be a part of part two after all these years?

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Good question, But let me just go back a little
bit first and and and say that as far as Indiana,
I would say that my one of my favorite movies
is The Hoosiers.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Hmmm.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
So yeah, so I I know in the end to
be the great basketball state.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Right, Well, are you a big basketball guy? Kevin?

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Not really? Not really. I mean I for any sports.
I like watching at you know, the finals, right right?

Speaker 1 (07:43):
You watched the Pacers. Did you watch the Pacers and
the Thunder and the Finals this year?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
No? I didn't. What is that? What is that going
to be on? When will that be on?

Speaker 6 (07:53):
Well?

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Yeah, it's it's already coming.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
It's already coming gone, And we're very disappointed around here
because of you know, it's it has already come and gone.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Did you know did you.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Grow up as far as the going go ahead?

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Did you grow up a sports fan in general?

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Not really, But I played a lot of sports. I
played football in college. I played uh, rugby and soccer?

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah, rugby? And now which one were you better?

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Football was the best?

Speaker 5 (08:25):
Yeah understand, but which one was the most fun? Rugby?

Speaker 4 (08:31):
I would say rugby only because of the parties afterwards.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Yes, yeah, well, well those dudes are hardcore too, by
the way, Kevin.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
They really are, they really are. I'm sorry I'm stepping
on you. We have a delay here in our transmission.
But the hardest part about rugby is surviving those parties afterwards.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, now we know that to be true.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
There's actually a bar that we know very well here
in Indianapolis called Connors that back in the day it
used to be somewhat of a rugby bar as well.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
I do have a question.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Kevin Neilan is going to be a part of Helium
Comedy Club all week and long. Go check him out,
and if you happen to meet him downtown, tell him.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
You heard him right here. I don't remember this SNL skit.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Somebody said that their favorite skit of yours was called
a Hooked on Sushi in your early years? Do you
recollect that one? Because I'm a big fan of SNL.
I don't remember that.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Well.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
I was just reading the Lauren Michael's book and they
say the proper thing is not a skit but a sketch.
They think in a book that a skit is something
from grammar school that you put together or you know,
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
I don't as you're talking to a novice right here, Kevin,
My apologies, but no, well it was the sketch about sushi.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
Yeah, well, I don't even think it was a sketch.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
I think was probably a parody commercial.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Okay, you know what I'm with you. I don't remember it.
Sometimes people will bring up sketches and I have no
idea what they're talking about. Or I'll be watching an
SNL rerun and I'll see me.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
In there and go, wow, I don't even remember this one.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
I Kevin Nealan joins us and that begs the question, like,
you were a part of so many different sketches, but
oftentimes some of our grand memories come from those kind
of fake commercials. Where did you get the most notoriety
for all your seasons SNL. Was it for a particular

(10:40):
sketch or maybe it was a commercial right there, because
to me, that would be gratifying somebody to remembers something
that still to this day is so important to them
that you may not remember.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
I mean, that's pretty cool how that stands the test
of time.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, yeah, well I was.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
I remember leaving LAX since this guy came up to me,
and you know, you get compliments every once in a while.
He goes, he says to me, thank you for helping
to create pop culture.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
But I think that uh, you know, I.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Think probably the three things that stand up the most
for me that I remember on the SNL was Hans
and Franz mister Subliminal and Weekend Update.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Yeah, Weekend Update. Do you have your favorites? I was
kind of thinking about this before you came on here.
There's there's so many like do you get Michael Jay
and Colin Jost obviously today, but besides yourself, do you
have your your favorite that have done or been a
part of Weekend Weekend Update in the past on SNL.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Yeah, I mean, my my style was I was emulating
Chevy Chase because he was the original one, but everybody
brings a different talent and personality to that weekend update desk.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
And you know, I think everybody does a great job
in their own way. You know. I think Colin jostin
Michael Jay do a great job. And it's kind of
changed over the years too, It's kind of evolved.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
You know, when I was doing this pretty much just
a straight newscaster, and you weren't laughing at your own
jokes and commenting on them, you know, So you know
it's and everybody has their own favorites.

Speaker 7 (12:23):
Go ahead, So I got a question, and in one
of the favorites, I mean, Hans and Franz, you mentioned,
you know, here to pump you up. I had the
pleasure of seeing Dana Carvey and David Spade about six
months ago, and Dana Carvey still you know, he was
doing a little skit about that too, and he spoke
very highly of you.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
You guys still have a great relationship, Yeah, we do.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Dana and I have been friends even since before us
and now we even shared a house together in Hollywood.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Hills for a little bit.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
So when sometimes people will ask me how I got
on Saturday Night Live, you know, or let's they phrase
it more like this, how did you get on Saturday
Night Live? And I say, you know, half of it
was luck and the other half was being friends with
Dana Carvey because he set up an audition for me.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Kevin Nalan this weekend is going to be at Helium
Comedy Club downtown. You can check him out and make
sure you heard him. Tell him you heard him right here.
Adam Sandler, how often do you guys talk? And I
will tell you this. Kevin back when the Super Bowl
was an indy he was on this show with me.
We were actually live with one another for about thirty minutes.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
And I'm a huge.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Basketball fan and I'm fifty five and still play all
the time like an idiot, and I love it.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
He invited me because you know this to be true.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
He's a huge basketball play He still plays all the
time too. He invited me to play and his handler
at the time, Kevin, was supposed to call on a
Saturday morning and give me the coordinates to get to
where we were downtown at the field House to play,
and that call never came, so I still live.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
Well, it's weird because I actually got to call it.
Play yeah with that and we had a great time,
had a brunch after what.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
I live in that world of disappointment right right now,
but I still I still love the dude in the
effect he's had on really everything. How often you guys
talk and how important a role has he played in
your life as friends, colleagues and co workers over the years.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
I talked to Sanda pretty often. I'm gonna be he's
going on tour soon and I'll be, you know, doing
a couple of guest spots on a show. So you know,
I every once in a while I'll see him, or
I'll call him, or we'll text each other, and it's
like we just picked up.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Where he left off on SNL and uh. And you know,
he's a good dude.

Speaker 4 (14:46):
Everybody loves him and he he's really loyal to his friends.
And yet you're talking about Hapy Gilmour too. That was
you know, the first one was a very kind of
a contained, low budget movie and this one was just massive,
you know, in every different way, you know, and they
had all.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
The cameos on there. It was fun seeing that.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
And you know, I've asked a lot of people how
they liked it, and everybody was like, yeah, it was good.
You know, I think there's a lot of good will
toward that movie from the first one.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, there is.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
And I was going to bring this up in closing
here with with Kevin Nealan, but Vernon Lundquist, Yeah, a
long time announcer and is noted for being a part
of some great calls you know, CBS certainly, but others
as well, but just some great calls. And I once
had him on this show years ago and he said
he is most noted and recognized from his role and

(15:38):
Happy Gilmore as the Yeah with the cross those sports
landscape you're thinking, I mean, there are some big moments
for him, you know, especially with the Dallas Cowboys for example,
And to know that he is most recognized and noted
for being a part of that film. I always felt
that the time was pretty amazing for him.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
No, I know, it's really kind of unexpect sometimes the
way that happens, like in this one and this last one.
I interviewed, Oh god, I'm blanking now. Scheffler Scottie Scheffler. Yeah, yo, Yeah,
and you know he's that'll that'll be probably his legacy

(16:17):
for a long time, his funny role in that movie,
even though of course they'll, you know, help the legacy
at golf and all the champions ships he's won. But
but yeah, I think that happens a lot with with movies.
It's unexpectedly you become known for that.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
Kevin Nealon with us no slipping on the ice this
weekend in Indianapolis, And I should mention this that Sandler
is going to be here at Gambridge Fieldhouse in October.
Are you going to be a part of that? You
said you were going to be a part of some
of his shows. Will you be back here in October?

Speaker 3 (16:51):
I don't know what's the data on that one.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Hell, I don't know. That's a good question.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
Sometime in October, but yeah, sometime, not sometime in October.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
I mean, how many of those are you doing?

Speaker 3 (17:03):
I'm not even sure yet.

Speaker 5 (17:05):
Maybe a couple, all right, Kevin's in town all the time,
checking on his club that he won in the lawsuit
Slip and Fall, Whiplash.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Hey, Kevin, it's an absolute pleasure. We have certainly enjoyed
you over the course of your career, whether it's SNL
or you know, Happy Gilmore, Happy Gilmore too. As you
mentioned a little bit earlier, Weeds, thank you for being
a part of central Indiana on this Labor Day weekend
and have a great time. And when you get back
in town again, please do not hesitate to look us up.

(17:41):
And maybe one of these days you could join us
out live because we don't have that delay that you
have to deal with live.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
It's much better like face to face when we're out
live like this.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
Oh okay, well I look forward to it. I'm always
I'm always like coming back here. So next time let's
do that.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
You got it.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Thank you very much, and we'll send people your way
to Healingum this weekend and have a laugh or two
down there with you.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
I love it.

Speaker 6 (18:07):
Thank you guys.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
So the any More Automotive Group Potline, Bob Lovel Indiana
Sports Talk. It is Friday night, number two of high
school football throughout the state of Indiana.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Hello Bob, how are you?

Speaker 6 (18:21):
I'm great John, how are you?

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Bob? I wanna started in sixth A.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
I the Brownsburg with that team from Maryland nationally ranked
was impressive last week and doing the business they did.
They get Cathedral coming up later on this evening in
six A.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
What are you thinking about this matchup?

Speaker 8 (18:41):
The Big Times, the Big Time matchup between you know,
two teams. It's basically number one Brownsburg and sixth a
number one Cathedral and Friday. I'm not sure I can
add anything to how important this is. Both teams are
capable obviously winning state championships. Both teams have one state championship.
Cathedrals won more than I can count. And so week

(19:04):
number two, you want to find out where you are
as a football team, You're going to find out in
a game like this.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Yeah, set of Grove on the road at Carroll up
at Fort Wayne coming up to save it. And I'm
assuming they're already up there. Westfield and carbal Bob. Both
teams start the season one and zero. You got a
week two clash on your hands in Hamilton County.

Speaker 8 (19:26):
Love the matchup, obviously, people talk about the improvement from
week one to two.

Speaker 6 (19:31):
Kevin right at Carmel.

Speaker 8 (19:33):
Has already made his stamp known his We know he's
capable multiple state championships. Everywhere he goes, he wins. Westfield
just continues to play at a high level. This feels
like a in like a semi state matchup, really, and
that's how good these two teams are. And you know

(19:53):
the sixth day ranks, and there's some battles. We already
talked about three of them, and there's tremendous games night in.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
Six a yeah, yeah, Week two of high school football.
Bob level and the Sports Talk will help us break.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
It down for you right here.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
So I'm thinking about Fishers, I'm thinking about Ben Davis,
I'm thinking about Decatur Central. Is never good to start
zero in two, and these teams are kind of looking
at zero in two right in the eyeballs later on tonight,
aren't they Well.

Speaker 6 (20:26):
They're challenged. I don't think there's any questions.

Speaker 8 (20:29):
I mean, Fishers in LN Ellen's capable, and Ellen's a good,
good football team. Ben Davis and Avon, Avon with a
great win last week to start their season got rejuvenated quickly.

Speaker 6 (20:43):
That's quite. That's really quite a matchup.

Speaker 8 (20:46):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (20:46):
And so you're right, you don't want to go oh
and two.

Speaker 8 (20:51):
But I think the other part of it, you take
sallace in the fact that it look regular season is
just a prelude to the tournament. So tournament day pairings
are made, wipe the slate clean and go out there.
But you you really do want to gain some momentum
in this week number three matchup that you have, uh
and there are a bunch of them without question.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yeah, Dekettri Central gets new pal at home coming up
later on tonight.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
That's number one new pal by the way in five
A yeah.

Speaker 6 (21:18):
That's a that's another that's a state championship level game.

Speaker 8 (21:21):
I mean those new pal uh one it last year
bumped up their ranked number number two and five A
decator Central made it to the state championship.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
Game a year ago.

Speaker 8 (21:33):
How much more drama do you need to set the
stage for a game like this in week number two?

Speaker 1 (21:38):
You know we talk about Martinsville in that renaissance season
of a year ago, a bit hit the skids, I think,
losing to Bedford North Lawrence in week number one. And
now you get a one and zero Bloomington South team.
So there's another squad of the arties that may be
looking at a zero and two star right in the eyes.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (21:58):
Look, Bloomington South always good.

Speaker 8 (22:00):
I think we all understand that the Alreadys you had
lost a tough one last week, as you mentioned, so
again you have to you have to. I'm sure the
speech from the coaches is we have to approach this
game like as deternament.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
We gotta win.

Speaker 6 (22:15):
We got to pick up wins.

Speaker 8 (22:16):
The other game that's intriguing to me John is Ron
Colly Franklin Central. These are too, You're really good and
not a lot of people talking about how good they are.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Hey, Bob, I was gonna mention this. I scored more
in high school than Ron Colly did last week in
week number one.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
Yeah, yet I'm not gonna give you.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
I'm not gonna give him any crap because they ended
up ended up winning and they get Franklin Central, And
I know Franklin Central's got some talent on their team too.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Starting getting to yep.

Speaker 6 (22:44):
But still, I mean big south side matchup. Uh, it's great.

Speaker 8 (22:49):
Uh, I'm not so sure I buy the fact that
you scored more than they did.

Speaker 6 (22:54):
We're just gonna let that slide the show. Say whatever
you want. There are no deckers on.

Speaker 8 (22:59):
This show, so say whatever you wants to say and
continue to live in that fantasy land.

Speaker 6 (23:04):
That's okay with us.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
I try. I did want to mention this.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
I think it was Danville at Gibson Southern, the second
ranked team of three got to win in their opener.
I do love the matchup with that particular challenge Memorial
Gibson Southern, Mississintowa modern day, and we should mention Cascade.
The reason why I bring this up. Cascade starts at
one and oh they're on the road at Danville. And

(23:28):
Danville was the one that lost to Gibson Southern last
week as well, there's another team that's looking for a
win to even things up on the season after a
week one tough one.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
I think the Danville cass Kate game is a great game.

Speaker 8 (23:42):
I mean, Danville is a very capable team, highly ranked
to start off with this Cascade team is getting.

Speaker 6 (23:48):
Better and better. I love the fact that it's you know,
it's a great.

Speaker 8 (23:52):
Matchup, two teams playing good football, great coaches, but again, drama.

Speaker 6 (23:57):
You don't want to go oh and two? So what
makes this some such a tough one?

Speaker 8 (24:02):
And you know, being a playing field grand I don't
recall losing to Danville at all when I was in
high school in any sport.

Speaker 6 (24:10):
So so I find it hard. I find it hard
to read for them. I hope all goes well. Uh,
and so I think it's a great matchup, iright.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
You probably noted last week my Thunderbirds of Eastern Green
It's a damn good thing they played the Springs Valley
because the five parents in attendance could go right across
the road and go to the casino because.

Speaker 2 (24:33):
Fifty eight seven was the final.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
When Springs Valley beats you fifty eight to seven, you
and I love my guys down there, But that's that's
a stinker right there.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
That is not good. First year a head coach and
a stinker.

Speaker 8 (24:47):
That's a bummer, John, Springs Valley is really good, okay.

Speaker 6 (24:52):
They I know it's hard.

Speaker 8 (24:53):
I know it's hard for you to forget history, and
I know I know it's difficult for you to look
at reality when it comes to this. But I'm just
telling you the Valley is as good as their number
seven in single A for a reason.

Speaker 6 (25:06):
They're that good.

Speaker 8 (25:07):
They're a really, really good football team that's going to
make a deep run into the tournament without questions. So
I hope that helps you a little bit with the
sting of that loss last week.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
Yeah, that's uh, that's pretty ugly right there. I mean
you you kind of I kind of anticipated it, if
you remember, with our dialogue right last week, I kind
of anticipated Hey, before I let you go, I want
you to bring this up. I love Marion and Undy
starting the season last night as they did. I mean,

(25:40):
no matter what happens, I think to kick off the
season that fashion here locally is pretty damn awesome.

Speaker 6 (25:47):
Bob Well, I couldn't agree more. John. I think it's
great that both coaches agreed to do it. That's number one.
That's a hard thing to get people to do. But
I think it's fantastic that you.

Speaker 8 (25:57):
Have a number of kids from the Central Indiana area
on those rosters. Those are two solid, solid programs, great coaches,
I mean great football coaches. Marion has won national championships,
U Indy has made deep runs into the Division two tournament.

Speaker 6 (26:14):
Why not have them play?

Speaker 8 (26:15):
And I think it's fantastic and it's great that they
played on Thursday to get away from high school football.
Thank you very much, big team. You could take a
lesson in this on how not to compete against high
school sports in the state if you had any brains,
quite frankly.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
And so I'm happy.

Speaker 6 (26:30):
I'm happy for them, And it was a great game.
It was an impressive win for the Hounds.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
Yeah yeah, I mean, and the Hounds, I mean really
took hold early and won that bad boy going away.
I mean in the second half, Marion put some points
on the board, but it was New Indy obviously early
on All Right, Indiana Sports Talk. Later on tonight and
tomorrow night. BOM's going to have you with high school

(26:56):
football tonight and then collegiately covered coming up tomorrow as
well Network Indiana affiliated stations, and of course right here
at Indy Indiana Sports Talk with Bob Lovell every Friday,
right here on the fan.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
Bob, I appreciate you have a great weekend.

Speaker 8 (27:12):
Enjoy the Yeah, thank you for me.

Speaker 2 (27:16):
You should be up here with us, Bob.

Speaker 1 (27:21):
Hashtag ass pat Pat Sullivan here is with us at
Mystic Waters Campground. I have a ton of the many
strawberry weeds in my yard. Can I treat them without
having to kill the entire law?

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Yeah, you can't.

Speaker 5 (27:32):
You know what, wild strawberries uh don't do very well
with trimech. So if you use a trimech weed killer
like a we'd be gone.

Speaker 3 (27:41):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (27:41):
And you want to do that in September when it
cools down and the movement in the plant is down
towards the root, so you get a more complete kill
rather than when you put weed killer on in the spring.
It just burns the tops and that's what US retailers
like because then you come back and buy more. But
the secret is if you do it in the all,
you will actually kill the wheat.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
Hashtag gas pad from Chad. This year we plan in
lavender and is doing well. My question is what is
the best timing for trimming pruning lavender hashtag gas pad.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
You know what?

Speaker 5 (28:13):
You can trim it back either in the fall. I
would the thing about lavender, it needs to be drained.
And if you're going to go through a winter, a
lot of times lavender doesn't come back, so you want
to make sure the lavender is mounded it.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
I don't even know what the help what is lavender?
By the way, explain that it's an herb.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
Use it as a decorative perennial as well, because it
smells like you know what smells like.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
It's gonna smell like some herb later or not.

Speaker 5 (28:37):
Nobody know what lavender smells like.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Smells like lavender. When's the last time it smells?

Speaker 5 (28:44):
Yeah, So I would suggest that a heavy mulch on
that and go ahead and you can cut it back
in the late fall.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
I love it when I like bring up marijuana references
and everybody backs away from it.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Light here we can have fun with it. It's okay,
you know what.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Anytime somebody brings in a baggie with weeds in it
for identification, I like loud as I can, well, ma'am, that's.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
Marijuana, like a regular, that is marijuana. Well, one of.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
These days, when we're all dead, it'll be legalized here
and they'll be able to tax it and make some
money off of you know what, one of these.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
When we're all going to be dead, you'll be able
to get prescription. They'll be given it to you in
the hospital.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
They're too busy jacking around with other stuff right now,
but one of these days we're all going to be dead,
not going to be doing that.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
And I'm not a weed god. Might I cheat your
trunk or anything like that, but damn.

Speaker 5 (29:31):
You know, I have never smoked marijuana in my life,
but I am willing to try so.

Speaker 1 (29:38):
Well, the one thing you have going for, I mean,
you're what would you could not a herb of war
because that's inaccurate, But what do you call yourself as
far as a botanist?

Speaker 2 (29:48):
Are you a botanist? Kind of because you know stuff
about weeds and lands, and they would not call myself that,
I are you? Are you a hardcore botany?

Speaker 5 (29:57):
No, I would know I'm a very well informed Is
it notist gardener?

Speaker 2 (30:02):
Gardener? All right? Yeah, I'm a gardener. Is that a
class you've taken on that or if you just learned that?

Speaker 5 (30:08):
Well, they appearance I took a class for twenty five years.
Sitting next to Dick Crumb, how much milk more gut for?
He didn't know that a little bit. There's no doubt
about that. Hey, here's a question. I have a hashtag
gass pat. I don't see scarecrows anymore in gardens. I
see lights.

Speaker 2 (30:24):
Why is that?

Speaker 5 (30:25):
Is it the scare away the birds or the VARs?
What kind of lights are you seeing in?

Speaker 1 (30:30):
Well, my neighbor Ron DeVault has lights in his garden,
and I think it's a scare away varmus like apossum,
raccoon and not so much birds.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Are we leaning in that direction right now? Well? I
guess if I guess, it depends on what's doing the
most damage.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
And obviously we all know that raccoons and uh, I
mean raccoons.

Speaker 2 (30:54):
Will they climb?

Speaker 3 (30:55):
They?

Speaker 5 (30:56):
I mean, my daughter had they they were ready to
pick the fruit from the apple tree.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
One night every apple was gone. Everyone.

Speaker 1 (31:05):
Yeah, they will get you good. There's no doubt. That's
why we trap him and take him across the river.
Jaylaw comany with skis. He's got shot skis. He shout
out to the upstairs pub.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
He's talking.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
By the way, Brent, we're gonna be there, coming up
a Thursday, coming up later all the season.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
Yes, I believe it November. The Bison Mafia right there.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
They're enjoying, embracing the Bison logo.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
Good. Good to see everybody right here.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
Brent Halverson j MV Mystic Waters Campground with hashtag as
pad going on and uh, hopefully we get Don Fisher
before the.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
End of the show. I think I may have.

Speaker 5 (31:42):
Uh when Don was going down to do an IU game,
he called into the show because he actually had a
weed problem in as long sure, and I thought, man,
shouldn't you be prepping for the game.

Speaker 4 (31:55):
He does.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
He does that really early as well, so that is
all good us.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Yeah, I asked Pat, this is from James right here, Pat,
what do you think we should do as far as
preparing for planting for the fall, fall planting.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Where do you begin?

Speaker 5 (32:09):
Fall is for planting, And the great thing about fall
is when you plant in the spring, which is when
most people plant, that plant has not gotten adjusted and
here comes the heat. Yeah right, So the great thing
about fall is as it gets colder, the ground stays warm,
so there's no stress on the plant. But yet the

(32:31):
roots are continuing to grow. So the roots will continue
to grow well into you know, probably past Christmas before
it really starts to freeze. So that's why. Really, so
the good news is it's better to plant in the fall.
The bad news is sometimes that you have our time
finding the nursery stock that you want because most of
it is sold in the spring, and that's when people
want to do it. But better to plant in the fall.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
Hashtag I guess pat when is the best time to
purchase and plant?

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Mums? Mum's the word here from you know what.

Speaker 5 (33:00):
I think they might be referring to Mumfest, which is
next weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Six dollar moms next weekend,
the weekend. Look at that Mumpfest, Mumfest, Mumfest, and no
idea most people will use moms. Mums technically would be
a perennial, but a perennial John means that it comes.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Back every year. Is that annual perennial? Annual?

Speaker 5 (33:26):
Just it's very confusing because you could have your annual dinner, right,
but he's a perennial favorite, So annual means just one,
one and done. That's what we like because we sell
it to you again next year. Perennials are beautiful and
they come up. But moms, you really have to get
him in the ground fast if you want to try
to bring him back next year. Free yetti and sauces,

(33:50):
and that's Tony's. That's Tony's Boss sauce. Tony's a local dude,
and he is awesome like where locally, like in indies
in the store all time, sampling the boss saw and that's.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Just awesome that is. And the jars, Yeah, it was
from his you know what.

Speaker 5 (34:04):
And I unfortunately I don't remember the name of his
barbecue joint. It was probably Tony's. I guess it'd be
a good one. Yeah, I saw this.

Speaker 1 (34:12):
There's a sign over and in Penalton that says Jimmy's
the drive in Jimmy's Best Barbecue in Indiana.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Is that true. Have we ever had barbecue from Jimmy's
over here? You have to try it. It's a drive
in right over there by Needlers. It's his best barbecue
in Indiana. Get did you get that? You know it's
got to be good? I mean, yeah, is that is
that true? Or do we do? We know? I've not
had Jimmy's personally, No, you know, I don't. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (34:39):
But it depends on how big Jimmy is. I'd want
to argue that, yeah, he's a big guy. He's probably
gonna be really good, and you're not sharbecue in the
Indiana possibly the world.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
Hey, my JMV disappointment moment is when he was at
the other station. There was supposed to be a Playboy
Bunny golf tournament and it didn't happen. Still I listened,
and yes, I still think you suck. That's what happens. See,
I try so damn hard not to let you down,

(35:10):
but something like that. I do remember what you're talking about.
There was supposed to be a Playboy Bunny golf tournament.
We were going to have, huh and it never happened.
Shout out the iHeart Radio Clear channel. Back in the
day that let me down on that, And I'm still
years later, fifteen plus years later, suckering.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
You eat that right now? You really promoting it really?
Like yes, yes, yes.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
What was the reason for not having it? I don't
really remember that. I mean I talked about this the
other day. I did so much stuff over the years.
One was Testosterama. Do you guys remember Testosterama. Now, it
was at the State Fairgrounds and it was about dudes.
It was a celebration on a weekend about what dudes like.
And it had displays like when you walk around of

(35:57):
dudes in their natural habitat, just like sitting around, even
sitting around watching TV. And the special guest on the
show for me during testoster Rama was the ex wife
of Jose Canseco, Jessica Conseco.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
So it was wild.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
It was it was like the only year and that
was I believe if you guys remember the noted promoter
here locally, Ray Compton, Oh yeah, Ray Compton for a
long time was with the Colts that Ray Compton was
with the Ice and had a lot of stuff with
the Ice back in the day. He promoted that it
was a one year event, but it was called test

(36:36):
at the State fairgrounds.

Speaker 5 (36:37):
But it was it wasn't part of the state Fair.
It was not No I think I think it was
in the winter time or something like that. So it
was called Testosterama.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
It was for did you go? I was there?

Speaker 3 (36:49):
Live?

Speaker 2 (36:49):
Was there? Jessica knseko when I were live? How many
people came? Six? It needed more, a little bit more.
It was not well attended. And this is what I
will tell you.

Speaker 5 (37:03):
We we do a ladies night that's coming up in September.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
Sure the ladies come.

Speaker 5 (37:08):
Hundreds of ladies come to get together with their gal pals.
We have wine, beer and all that stuff. So we thought,
oh we have a ladies night, we should do a
dude to night. So we called a gadget Beest. No
one came except a few dudes that came. Their wives
brought them. Because dudes don't can't organize anything. We don't
have a friend, you don't call anybody. Nobody wants to

(37:29):
go to an event.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
That is all dudes.

Speaker 1 (37:34):
Did not learn that in college, Like I watched all
these fraternities in Indiana State have all these parties and.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
It looks like a big boy scout meeting. The hell
would you want that about.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
So I when I hosted parties in Terre Haute and
Indiana State, would charge the dudes. Let the lovely ladies
these free, so the more dudes would come because the
lovely ladies would be there and the lovely ladies would
show up.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
That's just common knowledge right there, I know.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
But the Pike Fraternity never realized that at terror Hope
because they always had these parties and it was nothing
but dudes. I can't even dja your party because all
you dorks are hanging around punching one another on the shoulder.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
So yeah, so we learned that and learned that long ago.
Oh man, Jy Low's got a shatsky ride here. We're
gonna have to do that. Oh geez, I love it
all right, hashtag as pat we're gonna get a winner.
And you guys got the home and Garden coming up tomorrow,
live Borrow.

Speaker 5 (38:27):
Nine Anderson Speedway. Please join us, one.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
Dandy, You and Denny and Allison and Terry all out there,
live together.

Speaker 5 (38:36):
It's gonna be a blast holiday weekend. Shout out to Fulton.
Fulton asked about spider plants right now. He's trying to
get rid of too hashtag.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
He tried to make it out here, but his mom
said no way. He didn't join us.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
He said he was going to said yesterday, and I
didn't see him. It said yesterday either.

Speaker 3 (38:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Well and what he's uh, yeah, Holton.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
I think he plans stuff for his family. That's not
exactly in the plans for his family. I believe that
is correct. And I think what he needs is an
app for uber.

Speaker 5 (39:03):
He does, he does, I need finances. In fact, we
need to come together and finance Fulton's Uber so you
can get around town.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
Hey, thank you for the summer. I'm sorry again.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
He got started a little bit late because the Pacer
playoff run going to seven games in the NBA Finals.
But you know how much I love that was so
fun though the pacun was I still true story. I
still watch every single highlight because it all you see
him on Facebook all the time.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
They just pop up. It's so fun.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
The only highlight I don't watch, I don't watch after
the seven minute mark of Game seven of the NBA Finals,
But every other highlight of that.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
Postseason it was glorious.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
It was for the Pacers, I mean, and really, if
the Colts could find anything whatsoever, just anything whatsoever. You
see what you can do when you win, and then
put that product on the field. In this case, that works.
You can see how people are that people have been

(40:01):
thirsting for this forever, my gosh, and you saw so
much of it with the Pacers. It really was even
you know. And it doesn't make us a loser because
they lost. It makes us an embraser because it was
just such a special run.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
Was a circumstances that was so fun. That was like
over two months, right, two months of this.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
And the way that they won, the exciting games, you know,
the team concept, all of it.

Speaker 7 (40:26):
What it did for the city though too, with the
restaurant's bars, everything On Tuesday eight or whatever it was,
everybody was out supporting those Pacers and it was a
pretty special time.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
Still, I mean, the whole Miles Turner stuff is it's
fine you leave and go to Milwaukee, but the words
leaving town still so pissed.

Speaker 2 (40:44):
Me off about well, you know, I'm going on plants
and they don't want.

Speaker 1 (40:47):
To make competitive, but this place wants to be and
still will be competitive.

Speaker 2 (40:53):
Still.

Speaker 1 (40:54):
I love the team concept and I love what has
been done. Somebody tells me to shut up. It's time
to drink. Is a shot Sky behind If you're watching
the Triple A membership, lound me a YouTube libe the
Shotsky is behind me, Pat Sullivan hashtag guess Pat, Thank you, buddy.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
Been a great time. Thank you much. I gotta go.
I gotta go meet Kevin Nealon
