Speaker 1 (00:10):
And where are we going here?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Anything you have a chance against oursimistic cowboy?
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yay mother food?
Speaker 1 (00:17):
What do you like to do?
Speaker 4 (00:18):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (00:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Play chess, school seller's play chests.
Speaker 5 (00:23):
They give off the Jonathan Taylor Chuck cunning its way
walking the goal line. He's in there, put down and
why Jonathan Taylor Wheeler finds Here's halliburn into the front board,
mishandled it mcgin city shot.
Speaker 6 (00:41):
He said, John, I have never been betterom to be
on the air with you, here in Indianapolis, a place
where so many of my dreams have come true.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
The ride with JMV on ninety three five and one
oh seven.
Speaker 7 (00:55):
Five the fans and John is living the dream today
because for a second consecutive day he is not in
the building. He is back tomorrow because he is on
location both tomorrow and Friday. But John gets his own
little forty eight hour bender where I'm sure he has
consumed like twelve ounces of food the entire time and
(01:17):
has somehow gotten skinnier as he continues to defy the
laws of aging. I have not Greg Rakestraw is my name? Hello?
How are you hope? You're having a wonderful Wednesday afternoon
and seemingly been screening up too bad yesterday. So I
get one more crack at this today. You know the
drill three one, seven, two, three, nine, ten seventy, You call,
(01:40):
you text, We interact. Either way is perfectly fine. We
can do the same thing on Twitter as well at
Greg Rakestraw if you want to be a part of
the program. If not, I will continue my lifetime monologue
as largely growing up as an only child. So me
and the sound, the voices of my own head, We've
(02:01):
had a lifetime conversation. It's been going on for nearly
forty years, and I can recreate that, you know, here
on the radio if you'd like me too. You just
heard the guest list in the brief period of time
I had to interact with Jay Query, like all of
thirty seconds of it in the crossover segment. But in
case you were not listening in or simply want to
(02:22):
hear the guest list again, we literally take you around
the sports world locally. Because I was thinking about you
know who's having the show today, and I'm like, you know,
we just kind of glazed over IU football yesterday. I
think I had like one phone call or text question
about IU and you know, they're potentially a college football
playoff team for a second year in a row, and
(02:45):
they're playing in a game that's gonna be on national television.
It's a CBS three thirty kick. You can hear right
here coverage beginning at two thirty on ninety three to
five and one oh seven to five the fan with Oregon. Yes,
that's now a conference game. That's the way the world works.
But also it's big enough the college Game Day is
going to be there now, you know what, it's probably
(03:06):
a good idea if we actually have somebody on to
talk about the game now. Unfortunately, in addition to being
the substitute teacher for a couple of days and running
a somewhat successful business, pretty successful business in terms of
the I See Sports Network and doing things with the
(03:26):
Colts and the Indy eleven and YadA YadA, YadA, YadA YadA,
I'm also kind of single parenting it this week. And
I bring that up because the good folks at I
you were going to offer me a player, but I
had to take the interview at six point thirty last night,
and I kind of had to race out of here,
you know, to make sure my son wasn't tearing up
the neighborhood. So with that, Unfortunately, no IU player on
(03:49):
the show today, But I think we got the next
best thing, maybe, if not better, because I can talk
a little five at Liverpool with him. Two, Zach Osterman
is literally en route to Big ten Media for hoops,
and in fact, he will join us in the next
segment of the program. So of the lie you football
early in the show, because by God, we should be
(04:09):
talking about Indiana football during the course of the show,
given how the year plus of Kurt Signetti has gone
so far, and we're talking about this team being in
the college football playoff again, and this team is again
if they are able to pull off a win in
Oregon on Saturday, look at the conversation we'll have about
(04:30):
this Indiana football team then. Frankly, even if they don't,
as long as it's competitive, I don't think this loss
would do much damage to their chances. Big loss, big
problem again, Zach and I will get into that coming
up in the next segment of the show. Oh, I've
got a Kevin Bowen story to tell you. And this
is the way that you can tell that things are
(04:53):
hunky Dory out on West fifty sixth Street. Obviously, we
spent a good chunk of yesterday's show talking about the
We will spend a good chunk of today's show talking
about the Colts. And yes, there is Colts news in
which we will talk about coming up momentarily. But here
is the sign that things are going well for the
(05:13):
Indianapolis Colts and that there always seems to be laughter
in and around the building. Man, if you're losing, everything
is the Cold War, everything is serious. You are white
knuckling everything. You know what happens when you're four and
one and you're leading the division and currently number one
seed in the AFC reporters get gifts. Allow me to explain.
(05:37):
So mondays, we have a zoom call with Shane Steikin,
and normally Shane is wearing something from the Colts dot
com shop here apparel line. You know, one of the
many perks of the job of working the National Football League.
You tend to get pretty cool gear, and you tend
to get copious amounts of it. But on Monday, Shane
(05:58):
elected to rock a Master's hoodie. And of course, if
there was somebody on the zoom call that was going
to notice or have an opinion about it, it would
be Kevin Bowen, and Kevin kind of off handedly goes, hey,
if you have another one of those, let me know.
Press conference starts at eleven thirty in watch Shane Steichen
(06:21):
with a Master sweatshirt in hand and hands it to
Kevin Bowen. And by the way, his hair looked luxurious
her to see a we grow hair indye. But anyway,
Kevin is the un of a new sweatshirt. Now, today
was a flannel day for KB in case you were wondering,
In case he was or was not rocking down on
the morning show if you were watching the same way
(06:42):
that I am staring lovingly into that camera. For those
of you that are watching on Twitter, YouTube, the web, etc.
Right now, so that hit me. I'm like, you know what.
Last week we had Matt Contipr, director dressing as the
Oregon mascot paying off a bet. This week we have
reporters being handed gear by head coach because they asked
for it. This is what happens when life is good.
(07:05):
Winning is fun, and right now colts football is fun.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Now.
Speaker 7 (07:09):
The interesting thing is, if you just judged it by
some transactions, you wouldn't think that things were going all
that well for this football team. You know, sometimes stats
can lie to you. For example, the Colts won the
game on Sunday by thirty four points. You know how
many yards the Colts out gained the Raiders by on
(07:31):
Sunday less than that twenty one There was a twenty
one yard difference. The Colts had three hundred and seventeen yards,
just three one seven. The Raiders had two hundred and
ninety six yards, which is the same number of felonies
their fans had committed that were at the stadium on Sunday.
(07:52):
Sometimes you pause to let the joke marinate a little bit, Okay,
So anyway, sometimes things lie to you. And if I
had told you the Colts had brought in let's see
Xavian Howard, traded for Makai Blackman, brought in Mike Kilton,
and now have released Cameron mcgron as a linebacker, have
(08:15):
just put Joe Bachi on the ir have just signed
Jermine Pratt, who was the guy that was kind of
linked to the team in the off season, but he
ended up playing for the Las Vegas Raiders. He didn't
make the trip here. They let him go. He is
now in uniform and we're talking to him this afternoon
before he hits the practice field for the first time. Basically,
(08:37):
all the things I rattled off to you are typically
not things that happened to a team that is four
and one, So some of these things are congruent. Laughter
is associated with winning. Having to make all of these
transactions not normally associated with winning. But even with the
way the Colts defense has been in flux, Colts defense
(08:59):
has been really good. Offense has been phenomenal. Defense has
been really good. So yes, in case you missed this earlier,
might be a new starting linebacker next to Zaire Franklin
on Sunday afternoon. Jermaine Pratt, who had spent the last
six years playing in Cincinnati for lou An Arumo, went
(09:21):
to Vegas in the offseason. Twenty five tackles in four games,
but apparently it simply was not a fit. And he
is now here And I wrot this up with Mike
Chapel at practice today. For those of us that are
long in the tooth in terms of covering the team,
like we can remember, like Peyton Manning, like quizzing us
(09:41):
in the media, like if we can name all the
guys in his backup quarterbacks. I felt like doing a
similar thing with Zaire. Can you name all the players
that have lined up next to you this year? Because
it's been Zaire Franklin and some other guy like Cam mcgron,
Joe Bachi, Austin Agyk. It's been different players, not necessarily starting,
(10:06):
but getting reps. Like if you've been a linebacker on
the Colts roster, they've been active for a game this year,
you've probably lined up next to Sire Franklin at some
point in time. And so that continues to be a
revolving door and typically that is not a recipe for success.
But it hasn't derailed the Colts just yet, maybe because
(10:26):
those injuries, those tryouts that throw it on the wall
and see if it sticks, like it to ad just
a couple of positions, you know you've had your stalwarts
like the off four mentioned Zier Franklin, like DeForest Buckner,
like Grover Stewart. By the way, news on Grover Stewart
practice today. The full Colts injury report will come out
(10:46):
at about four o'clock. Alec Pierce is still in the
concussion protocol. He has missed the last two games, but
it's practicing today. Grover Stewart practicing today. Kenny Moore resuming
workouts today. Not sure yet what that means for his
status for Sunday again, Mike Hilton. His replacement is now
(11:10):
in the practice squad I are, which means it's not
Kenny Moore. It's probably Chris Lamont, who has played well
when given the opportunity. But that's kind of the news
today on the news front from the Colts the other thing,
and we talked about this yesterday, but it was good
to see him there, Michael Badgeley again the money Badger,
back as the Colts kicker, and had a chance to
(11:31):
talk to him and he was very appreciative of the
opportunity to be back here in Indianapolis for a third time.
So from a cults standpoint, we'll talk about that obviously,
kay B and I will have those conversations, as will
Charles R. Buckle and I. Buck is going to be
on the broadcast of the game in LA next Sunday.
That's the next time you hear hear him with Matt
(11:53):
Taylor on Colts Radio. But you'll hear him with me
coming up at five o'clock Our other guest is Jeremiah Jackson.
Jeremi Jackson, Jeremiah Johnson, not Jeremiah Jackson. I know Jeremia Jackson,
know Jeremiah Johnson. Jeremia Johnson will be on the program.
I was thrown off because I got a very unique
(12:16):
reason as to why maybe somebody couldn't be on the
show today, and it was JJ. And I texted him
while I was out at Colts practice, and a few
minutes later I got a response back. And you know
how sometimes you'll get like a text that explains an image,
but the text comes in first, and then you see
the image, and Jeremiah goes, I'm not sure I've got time.
(12:40):
I'm busy farming. Excuse me now. I get I am
someone that I could never officially call myself a farmer,
but I grew up with corns surrounding me on four sides.
I've thrown a hey baal or two. I've dug some potatoes,
I picked some berries over the course of the years,
so I'm more of a farmer than most, but by
(13:01):
no means my professional farmer. But again, I've known Jeremiah
for a few years, and I'm like, did I miss something?
In translation and then literally, here is a picture here
a picture of Jeremiah driving a tractor. Now you know,
I'm not sure what the crossover is of NBA sideline
(13:22):
reporters that know how to drive a combine. I'm gonna
guess that's one of one, and JJ is that person.
So we will talk a little bit about the Indiana
Pacers exhibition opener last night one thirty five, one thirty
four in overtime when I again some of us in
a Timberwolves. But frankly, I'll probably talk to JJ more
(13:43):
about horse racing and farming is probably what we'll talk
about when he joins us at five point thirty. If
there is something else that you want to discuss three
one seven, two, three nine, ten seventy both text and
voice works on that, Uh, hit me up on Twitter
at Regstraw and we'll figure out a time to get
together and talk about said things. Briefly about the Pacers
(14:07):
preseason game last night, no player played more than twenty
eight minutes, and that was Taylor Peter, who was one
of their second round picks. The starters played no more
than fourteen minutes when it was ones versus ones. The
Indiana Pacers were the better team. The Indiana Pacers had
a thirteen point league going to the fourth quarter. That
(14:28):
thing got to overtime, and I would suggest the NBA
maybe adopt this from the National Football League. Listen, you're
gonna go overtime in a preseason game, don't make it
sudden death, or to say, hey, we all tied, let's
go home and be good with it there now. Obviously,
there were some injury concerns with the Pacers last night.
(14:48):
TJ McConnell exited after playing eight minutes and scoring seven
points with a bit of a hamstring issue. Dylon Wright,
who was trying to make the team, got knocked silly
on a play last night, so that's a little bit scary. Again.
The Pacers only half three more preseason games left to go,
and the next one comes up on Saturday. And like, literally,
(15:10):
as I'm doing the math in my head, I think
there were nineteen players that played in last night's game
for the Pacers game, if not eighteen, now I'm used
to do in a football game where ninety guys are
in uniform in August, So I get it again. Glad
the Pacers won. I'm glad the Pacers Ones looked great.
(15:30):
I'm not sure we need overtime in a preseason game.
And the other thing, too, is and again I knew
this is the case because he's you know, he's big time,
he's network, he's nationwide. I was hoping since we had
the Timberwolves television feed, we would get a Michael Grady game.
Unfortunately we did not. And then I was trying to
(15:51):
watch on the second quarter and they were interviewing like
the new like VP and CEO of the Timberwolves and
the Lynx, and again that's very irrelevant for the Minnesota audience,
but since I'm in the Indianapolis audience, I didn't care.
And lord knows, like our highest rated television segment of
any Colts preseason is when we would have Jim or
(16:13):
now Carly join us. So I get it and I
understand it. But I was like, yeah, I tried. I
was trying to, like, you know, lock it and watch
the preseason game, have a full breakdown, and I'm like, nah,
can't do it. As expected. As Kristenry told us, Isaiah
Jackson got the run with the Ones last night, James
Wiseman got sixteen minutes, Jay Huff got nineteen minutes. Tony
(16:37):
Bradley only got five minutes in last night's game. Maybe
that gives you a little idea, because again, you know,
I'm not sure Tony's gonna make the team, even though
he was a guy that was a valuable contributor down
the stretch of last season mostly good things. Any sort
of TJ McConnell injury is a bit scary, and simply
the injury to Delon right was scary period, regardless of
who it was, but more good than bad for the
(16:59):
Indian Anna Pacers last night, So we can certainly talk
about that as well. Now, maybe, just maybe what you
want to talk about today is little Major League baseball.
And this was pointed out that this is the last
day of the year that there will be four or
more Major League Baseball games in one day, because obviously
(17:24):
we'll start working in some breaks to get to Game
five and travel and things of that sort. All four
series could be clinched today. We're supposed to have baseball
on while we were on yesterday and mother nature got
in the way in Detroit. But Seattle and Detroit are
underway right now. Literally that game is in the bottom
(17:44):
half of the first inning. They are scoreless, Seattle can
close it out and win their first playoff series in
twenty four years in that game today. Cubs and Brewers
then have a first pitch just after five o'clock Blue
Jays and Yankees, and the Yankees slugged their way back
into that series last night. That is a seven o
(18:07):
eight first pitch Phillies and Dodgers Game three of that series.
Dodgers lead to nothing nine oh eight first pitch in
that game. Again, by the way, Brewers have a to
nothing lead against Chicago Cubs. So if you want to
talk a little baseball, all of those things are certainly
in plate today as well. And I remember when I
(18:29):
was asked a couple of weeks ago, like leading into
Ryder Cup weekend, like, hey, is this like one of
the great weekends in sports? And I said, yes, but frankly,
what is the best time in sports? We're in it
right now. Like if you're a puckhead and that's with
a p in kseh you winning. I saw James's eyes
percoat as I said that, he's like looking for the
(18:51):
dump button. No, puck head, like yesterday was a holiday
for you. NHL season began. Uh if you're a seam head,
that's baseball. You're enjoying this day of you know, you
basically have ten straight hours of playoff baseball. Today is
your day. Obviously, if you're a Cults fan or NFL fan,
(19:11):
will twenty four to seven, three sixty five tens to
be your thing. But especially during the month of October,
and we reference the fact there was an NBA preseason
game they tip it off for real in two weeks.
Just like weather wise, it's tough to top the weather
that we have going today, same thing can be said
(19:33):
from a sports standpoint. In other words, it is a
very easy day for me to fill in for JMV.
So interact with us three one, seven, two, nine, ten
seventy on Twitter at Greg rekesdraw and we'll get the
text lined up and we'll start having James read those,
because again, just like a day ago, I am not
(19:54):
cool enough to be on the text chain, James will
have to read those to me. We'll take this quick
time I will work in text. Will also track down
zach Ostram to the Indianapolis Star as oh yeah, Indiana
plays a really freaking important football game on Saturday afternoon.
That conversation comes up next reg Reikstraw filling in for JMV.
Ninety three to five and one seven to five the fan.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
The ride with JMV.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Say, man, you got a joint?
Speaker 8 (20:22):
Uh No, not on me, man.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
It'll be a lot cooler if.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
He did.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Ninety three to five and one oh seven five the
fan playoff baseball in the background. A little new addition
in the background. Two what's value? Football conversation and basketball
and Liverpool and other stuff I'm sure will take place.
When Zach Ostaman joins us via the Andy Moore Automotive
(20:52):
Group hotline, he is on his way to Chicago for
Big Ten Basketball media days.
Speaker 7 (20:58):
Where on the route on isik? Are you now? My friend?
Speaker 3 (21:03):
I'm in Illinois now, so I've left sixty five behind
and I'm crawling my way through a vast and interconnected
web of.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
You're skywaghing it today. Very good, good, good choice by you.
Let's start with this. I'll give like the big picture
economic if you then we'll get the actual football game itself.
How is the traffic in what you write for football,
given the success of the last year, year and a half,
how is that comparing with the basketball traffic? When you're
(21:35):
writing things for the Indianapolis Star.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
I mean it's probably pretty close, to be honest, I mean,
you know the the and I'm I'm not slaving over
your numbers every single day, but I mean it the
I've said this before in a few different ways, like
it is not lost on people in positions of authority
and influence and so forth around indian Like just how
(22:02):
quickly and comprehensively a fan base that you know, general
wisdom said for a generation just was dead on arrival
with football has embraced having a successful, competent, consistent, you know, frankly,
like a program that can trust and I even trace
(22:25):
it back sometimes I tell people, listen, what Kurzgetti has
done is historic, it's unprecedent, it's remarkable. But don't forget,
you know, Indiana's trending. One more win, this will be
Indiana's sixth postseason in the last eleven years in football
under three different head coaches. It's not like this happened
completely out of nowhere. This was the result I would
(22:46):
argue of ten to fifteen years of really persistent investments,
sometimes frankly against results that pushed Indiana further and further
until Indiana got too a place where a coach like
Kurt Signetti would look at IU and say, actually, they
look like they're ready to be serious about football, and
(23:08):
that I am therefore going to be serious about them.
I don't think Indiana hid he is able to hire
Kirt Signetti in twenty eleven or twenty twelve, But I
think by twenty twenty three, Indiana has put a lot
more infrastructure in place, has learned a lot more about
what investment should look like in football and how to
(23:31):
capitalize on success when you have it. And then of
course Indiana winds up making kind of a hire to
end all highers, and now we see.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
The results all right, onto the business at hand. For
as wonderful as last year was, there was still a
gap when Indiana played. The two teams ended up playing
for the National Championship Game twenty three point loss to
Ohio State, ten point lost a Notre Dame. I'm not
sure either game was as close, especially the second one
of the group tells you this Indiana team can be closer,
(24:03):
more competitive, pull off a do W against a team
of similar ilk like Oregon.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Well, I think it's a few things. I think we're
certainly going to find out more about just how much
better Indiana's offensive line has gotten into last year this weekend.
You know, I think Oregon folks in terms of tough
in talent and also depth, which is not something as
many programs have anymore. But I think the Ducks do.
I think we're gonna We're gonna learn a lot more
about where that offensive line is, maybe relative to where
(24:32):
it was and what it was a year ago. As
good as it was a year ago, I think there's
been a lot of beliefs better this year. I think,
you know, if it is, this is the kind of
game where it needs to show up in obviously how
they've blocked, but also you think about, you know, Indiana
really struggled to move or score the ball in those
two games you talked about last season because Indiana could
not get its pass game into a rhythm. I think
(24:56):
so much of this game if you want to talk
about Franana mon Dooza, if you I want to talk about
the explosiveness in Indiana's run game, which was not necessarily
a feature last year, so much of that has to
start with your offensive line, frankly, and then I think
the other piece of this that probably has not gotten
talked about enough, and I think it's been lost kind
(25:16):
of in the you know, the the prinandum and does
the storyline and maybe the Illinois of it all, and
just the nature of the way Indiana one in that game.
Indian's defense, I would argue, is maybe even a little
bit better than it was a year ago. And that's
been a surprise, largely because that was the side of
the ball that seemed ripe for a little bit of regression.
(25:36):
If that's the case. You know, if you think about
a lefto of the Illinois game. But I think people
do forget defense is holding its own and Columbus's seven
to seven late first half and it's two uncharacteristic special
teams of mistakes that wind up kind of blowing the
door open for the Buckeyes. But in that game, the
(25:58):
defense is really more holding its own than it is
like dramatically changing the stakes, the course and outcome of
the game. Now you face maybe the best offense you're
gonna see this season, certainly I would argue, the best
quarterback you're gonna see this season. Can this defense not
just maybe keep Indiana in the game, but really give
(26:18):
Indiana some opportunities to win the game. I think we're
gonna get a good test to that this weekend as well.
Speaker 7 (26:24):
Again. Zach Austaman of the Indian Apples Star joining us
on the Andy Moore Automotive Group hotline. Greg Reikstraw filling
in for JMB ninety three to five and one OHO
seven to five fan. I am old enough to remember
Indiana having a legitimate Heisman candidate and Anthony Thompson, and
yes there was a buzz for a mid level team
about a guy that was obviously a great NFL player
(26:44):
in Antoine Randall. L Just how legitimate of a chance
at the Heisman does Fernando Mendoza have.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
I mean, certainly, I think of the performance to continue
like they have. I think there's a legitimate chance. Obviously.
It's games like this where you make a Heisman candidacy
if you're gonna have one that if you're gonna have
one that continues, you know, all the way through to
the end of November and end of December. It's games
like this where that happens. Because the Heisman is not
(27:15):
just numbers, obviously, it's also moments, and you know there
are I mean, it sounds excuse me, it sounds simplistic,
but there are a few moments you know that ring
greater than beating a top five team on the road
in a difficult environment. And if you know, and in particular,
I think listen, by almost any measure, these are the
(27:35):
two best quarterbacks in Big Ten so far, and the
sample size isn't small anymore. Oregon has gone to Penn
State and one in a wide out. Indiana's got wins
over Illinois and at Iowa. We're not talking about, oh,
they look good, but let's see what they do when
the competition steps up. The competition has stepped up, and
in different ways, both of these guys have really matched
(27:58):
that more as one of those I should pass with
the country. Mendoza obviously has had just a couple of
eye popping games, the Illinois game being the big one.
You know, the only other quarterback in the country, if
I remembering, that's right, I said this on our podcast yesterday.
I believe the only other quarterback in the country with
at least thirteen touchdown passes and only one interception is
ty Sipson. And that's like, that's that's the company these
(28:20):
two guys are keeping. And if you're gonna have a
Heisman candidacy, there is no better way to bolster it
than by a winning on the road in a tough
environment and be in doing so, winning head up against
you know, one of your most direct competitors, which is
(28:41):
what Dante More is. And so I think, listen, I
think for an am Mendoza is a good quarterback the
other bad game Saturday. I don't think that means that
suddenly you know, he's been exposed and everything before his fraudulent.
But if we are going to talk about a Heisman
candidacy for Mendoza, it's got to be based around games
like this. And that's why I think. You know, if
(29:03):
you're looking at Mendoza and you know, it's funny because
this is one of those moments where after amind yourself
we're not grading an Indiana quarterback on the Indiana quarterback.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
Of scaling, right, you.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Know, we're not grading in Indiana on the Indiana scale.
We're grading Indiana on a scale of how close to
the best team in the country are you? And how
close to the best quarterback or the best defense, or
the best receiver or the best coordinator in the country
are you. That's the scale we're talking about, and that's
why the stakes are so high. I think for Mendoza,
(29:36):
if we and listen, Mendoza is sit here obviously tell
you I'm not worried about the heisman. That's not in
my thoughts. I don't care. But you know, for you
and me, that's why this game means so much in
our assessment of what kind of chance this guy has
to be In that conversation and maybe even in New
York in December.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
I promise you I'm not get off my line guy
not trying to be And I ask you this question,
knowing you covered a Big ten road game at the
Rose Bowl Altheady a year ago, you still have a
hard time wrapping your mind around the fact that you're
going to Eugene, Oregon to cover a massive game in
the Big Ten on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
This is where I will I will let people behind
the curtain a little bit. I'm not actually going on
our travel with the Herald Times because we're both in
net papers. And I got Puerto Rico the basketball team
back in August, so the the age team has got
Penn State and uh and and Oregon, and I've got
Maryland and we'll have I'll be up at the Marquette
bask anyway, we don't need to get too deep into it.
(30:37):
You know what's what's I'll fire it back at you
in the other direction. Do you know who's the last
Big ten team to win in Eugene?
Speaker 7 (30:43):
That'd be the Indiana Hoosiers in two thousand and four.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
Correct, that's correct, which obviously I'm sure Oregon hasn't played
a ton of Big ten teams in Eugene. But that
gives you a tense for the scale of how difficult
game like this is going to be. Dan Lanning lost
one game at home in three and a half years,
as Oregon's had, and that was to a team that
wound up playing for a national championship. That's that's the
bar you've got to clear to win this game if
(31:07):
you're Indiana. And yes, it's a bit strange to think
that Indiana is going to the West Coast for a
conference game of this magnitude. You know, I saw somebody
on Twitter yesterday, say like three years ago, what would
have seemed less likely Oregon being in the Big ten
or Indiana Oregon being a Top ten matchup. But you know,
(31:29):
that's how quickly things can change in modern college football,
and all credit to Indiana for being a position to
capitalize on that.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
No doubt about that. By the way, in that game
in two thousand and four, A. Jared DeNardo was the
head coach. B Kellen Clemens was the quarterback for Oregon.
Matt Levechio was the quarterback for Indiana. The Hoosiers had
a kickoff re turn touchdown and Oregon coughed the ball
up seven times as Indiana won that game in Eugene
some twenty one years ago. Final football question for me,
(31:58):
if this doesn't go well Saturday, what does the path
to the CFP look like for Indiana?
Speaker 3 (32:06):
Yeah, I don't think it changes that dramatically. I mean,
if Indiana loses at Oregon the way that Illinois lost
in Bloomington, maybe that shifts things. But what's important to
remember is Indiana's got at least at least two wins
right now that are probably better than any wins that
had a year ago. You know, in a season when
(32:27):
it looks like an uphill battle for the ACC to
be a multi mid league, it looks like an uphill
battle for the Big twelve to be a multi bid
league at least this things stand right now, it might
be an uphill battle, frankly for even a nine ten
and two Notre Dame to get in because there's gonna
be so little quality on Notre Dame's resume. I mean,
think about, for example, if Indiana beat loses to Oregon
(32:47):
and Penn State wins every other game, if you're putting
it ten in two Indiana, which wins against Illinois at
Iowa against ten and two Notre Dame, Indiana probably has
the advantage, right, so you know, this is another year
where the big ten and the SEC are going to
dominate those those at large playoff berths. I don't think
Indiana wants to live in a world where it loses
(33:09):
this game heavy, But even if it does, then India
is still in a better spot than it really was
for a lot of last season, simply because it already
has so much quality on its resume. And I know
Indiana won't think about it this way, but if Indiana
loses fighting in some ways, Indiana almost comes out with
(33:29):
even more credit from.
Speaker 7 (33:30):
This week, sure, I mean, it's.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
I mean, heck, I would even point to the old
Dominion game, like even Old Dominion right now, looks better
than any non conference when Indiana had last year. Like
they're just in a better spot than they were a
year ago. And I think that's it seems like college
football has recalibrated a little bit on Indiana. There's there's
a lot less doubt with this team than maybe there
was a year ago. And I think that's part of
the reason why is college football has seen Indiana play,
(33:56):
recognize good teams, recognize difficult environments, and win in those moments.
And I don't think let's say Indiana lose this game
thirty eight to seventeen, which is certainly a possible outcome,
just because Oregon is that good. I don't think that
suddenly changes all the thinking around.
Speaker 7 (34:14):
Indian Again, in a phrase you wouldn't talk about two
or three years ago, after spending fifteen minutes talking about
AU football, I'll ask you, uh, Indiana basketball question, as
you're about to the Dan Ryan Expressway on your way
to media day up in Chicago for all things Big
ten hoops, do we have a grasp as to what
is going to constitute a good season or what? And
(34:37):
I know this phrase is said and not really meant
when it comes to Indiana basketball. Realistic expectations. Do we
have a grasp on what we think this group's going
to be? Know them? The season's out less than a
month away.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Certainly at least some, And I think the Puerto Rico
trip helps. And I was fortunate enough to be there
for all three of those games, so I've seen more
of this team than you know most people have. Darren
Debris It's worth and him credit. He's also open practice
to the media two or three times, which is not
something his predecessors did very much at all. I would
be surprised. I know there are a lot of Indiana
(35:10):
fans that sort of need to see it to believe it.
I would be surprised if this team cannot shoot and
score the ball at a pretty comfortable clip. I think
this team is going to present some matchup problems for
a lot of opponents because this team's gotten a lot
of players somewhere between like six four and six eight.
They can all shoot the ball, handle the ball, pass
(35:31):
the ball, even rebound the ball a little bit. I
do think it's going to be a team that is
is hurting for size and is hurting for at times
defensive solidity, in part because it doesn't have a ton
of that size. Now that was listen, that was a
roster choice that Indiana mad so Darren Debries has got
to be prepared to mitigate for that. But I wouldn't
(35:53):
be shocked if Indiana is going to need to win,
you know, some shootouts this winter. But I also wouldn't
be shocked if Indian does wins some shootouts this winter,
because I do think the ability to shoot and score
the ball is very real and very present on this roster.
You know, they'll tell you the minimum expectation is the
NCAA tournament. I think a lot of Indiana fans would
(36:15):
agree with him. On the other hand, I do think,
you know, given just the the tumult of the last
seven or eight years, I don't know that it would
be that difficult to get a lot of fans on
side early with just some a couple of good wins
and some you know, I hate to say this way,
but some aesthetically pleasing performances, right, And so I think
(36:36):
it's it is going to look certainly very different than
what it's looked like for the last four to eight years.
I think they're gonna be waysing which Indiana fans enjoy
that probably some ways in which it frustrates them, but
I think that ultimately everyone probably still says, hey, minimum
minimum required expectation is going to be we're playing past
(36:58):
the big ten tournament.
Speaker 7 (36:58):
In the Market's fair enough. Unfortunately, no time for Liverpool,
No little five hundred a day. I need to let
Zach get back to ten and two and focusing on
the road. Thanks to the time and the insight, my
friend will do it again soon.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Absolutely, thanks for having me. As always, you got it.
Speaker 7 (37:12):
Zach Osterman again of the Indianapolis Star. He's fantastic, both
from a conversation standpoint, from a written word standpoint, as
well as an all guests today on the Andy Moore
Automotive Group hotline. So, Indiana fans, basketball's fine, but really,
from a football standpoint, this is a big stinking game.
(37:33):
This is a litmus test game. This is it's to
some degree a game with house money because it's on
the road and because of how good Oregon is and
has been. If you somehow find a way to win
that game, you're in a different stratosphere. But even if
you lose competitively, it doesn't do that much damage to you.
(37:54):
You want to talk about the Hoosiers in football. Yes,
in football, we can have that conversation. Ortsen, We'll talk
something else. That's fine too, Kevin one at four, your
phone calls, your tweets, your text when we come back.
Plus we keep you updated on playoff baseball, first of
four games is underway. Ninety three five and one oh
seven five The Fan, the Ride with JMV.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
And you can tell Rolling Stone Magazine that my last
words were I'm on.
Speaker 5 (38:24):
Drugs ninety three five and one oh seven five The Fan,
much like I'm a dance.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
I hope you're rocking your Wednesday afternoon, Greg Reikstra, I
am a fan of Falco, by the way, So anytime
we can drop Falco on the show, whether it's on
this program or if I am Vienna calling JMV on
a Saturday evening on the takeover, I am very much
down with that. Three one seven, two, three nine, ten
seventy is the telephone number. You can text me, you
(38:57):
can call me, you can tweet to me at Greg
Rakes if you want. You can just sit back and
I'll try to make your Wednesday afternoon on a beautiful
day even more enjoyable. One of the things that happens
when your team wins. And I talked about the GIF
that was given to Kevin Bowen. Let him talk about
that when we come back on the show here in
(39:17):
the next segment of the program a few minutes from now,
but the national media starts to talk more about your team.
It's like, literally, I'm just kind of scanning ESPN dot
com during the break and one of the conversations is
is an extension time for Daniel Jones Already there are
(39:38):
some potential cap ramifications for things like that if you
do it now. But after five games, are you buying? Well, Frankly,
I'll again reference Dan Grasiano and Jeremy Faller that we're
kind of having this conversation with ESPN dot Com. Their
answer is yes. My guess would be is that most
(39:59):
people that are li to know this conversation would say, yes,
I'm buying after five games of a season. It's just
kind of something to throw out there that those conversations
certainly being had amongst reporters at water coolers, and my
guess would be preparations like that are happening behind the
scenes with the Indianapolis Colts as well. Cat something happening
(40:21):
this year. I don't know, but just throwing it out
there that it is certainly a potential or topic of conversation. Again,
I turned to my right so I can get a
look at the ginormous monitor behind me. Playoff baseball, four
games worth of it. What a day it would be
to be in Detroit and checking out playoff baseball Today
(40:44):
Seattle won Detroit nothing top of the third. If Seattle
wins now, I said something that was not all the
way wrong, but not all the way correct earlier when
I said that Seattle was going for their first playoff
series win since two thousand. They won the three game
wild card series three years ago. They would look to
(41:07):
make the league championship for the first time since two
thousand and one. So they have won a playoff series,
but it was the shortened wild card variety of the
series in which they have claimed. I also look this up.
The Mariners next year will be their fiftieth year. Started
(41:29):
in nineteen seventy seven, they and the Blue Jays broke
in to the BIGS at the same time. The Mariners
have made the postseason five times twice since two thousand
and one. Three years ago, and this go round, and
as I explained yesterday. If my favorite team in a
(41:50):
given sport is not in it, I'm rooting for chaos.
I'm rooting for long suffering franchises and fan bases. It
comes to Major League Baseball, that group in the Pacific
Northwest would be about as close as you could get. Obviously, now,
if the Cubs have won, and I can't believe it's
been nine years since the Cubs were won the World
(42:12):
Series twenty years ago for the White Sox, and nobody
thinks of the Red Sox as losers anymore given what's
happened in the last twenty years. The team that has
the longest stretch of utility in terms of a World
Series would be the Cleveland Guardians, the team that has
gone the longest without a playoff series win. Will That'd
be my favorite team, and Kevin Bowen's favorite team, and
(42:35):
jmv's favorite team, and possibly your favorite team in the
reds That's not going to get changed this year. But
like I said, I would love to see Seattle win.
I want to see the Blue Jays win. I'd like
to see the Brewers win, and frankly don't carry wins
between the Phillies and the Dodgers at this point. Give
me chaos at this point, but frankly, give me a
beautiful dayh There's four playoff games and that is more
(42:58):
than good enough. So again, the thing is that score
Seattle in Detroit again early in that one. Next game
to get going is Brewers and Cubs. That is a
start just after five o'clock at Wrigley Field. Three one seven, two,
three nine ten seventy is the telephone number. The next segment, though,
I think I've got you covered. The recipient of a
(43:19):
new Master sweatshirt. Kevin Bowen joins us. Next ninety three
to five and one oh seven five The Fan, The
ride with JMV in.
Speaker 1 (43:30):
The beatleser here in the beat.
Speaker 5 (43:32):
Oozer ninety three five and one oh seven five The Fan, one.
Speaker 7 (43:41):
Hour down and two hours left to go. Greg Rakeshraw
filling in for JMV. It is the ride on ninety
three five and one oh seven five The Fan. He
is back tomorrow and Friday, and on location in both
days he's down on uh mass av I'm not mass
ab Fountain Square on Friday, and you know last week
(44:03):
he was like in my backyard. I might still make
an appearance this Friday on the program, considering that AT's
or a warning, however you want to take him. Kevin Bowen,
of course is on five days a week, but normally
on Wednesdays he graces the afternoon show with his presence,
even when the substitute teacher is hosting. Kevin Bowen joins
(44:23):
us now on the Andy Moore Automotive Group hotline. How
is your new Master sweatshirt great?
Speaker 8 (44:31):
Can you hear me loud and clear?
Speaker 7 (44:32):
I got you loud and clear, yes, sir.
Speaker 4 (44:34):
And I'm currently exiting the parking garage Eddie Garrison and
I just got done recording the podcast, So sometimes the
service can be a little.
Speaker 3 (44:44):
Shane Siken with Santa comes early to Kevin Bowen. I
had no idea this was happening, I commented on the
Monday Zoom call. Shane is wearing a very nice mastershirt.
Man that is a good looking pizza of apparel. And
next thing you know, he walks into the media room
today and delivers a green Master's butcher and it had
me taking rank. I almost at it.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
Do you think this man just has like twelve different
pieces of Masters apparel hanging around?
Speaker 7 (45:09):
I know he's got that with Coult stuff. So my
follow up question was, Shane doesn't strike me as a
guy that has a lot of outside interest. It's football, football,
occasional time with family and football. Is Shane at all
a golfer? Is that a thing for him?
Speaker 1 (45:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (45:25):
He is.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
Yeah, that is I think one of the very few
hobbies and he's I think it's been the Masters, if
I'm not mistaken, each of the last two years kind
of part of like there, the agency that represents them,
they have a bunch of their guys down there for
the Masters, and he has had based off what he's
told me, he's had an pretty incredible experience in viewing
(45:48):
that that term. I do think he dabbles a little
bit and is out in California during the summer and
plays out there. So yes, I do think as much
as a football nerd as he is, and that consumes
his life a ton.
Speaker 3 (46:01):
I do think he plays a little golf, all right.
Speaker 7 (46:03):
Since you are a scratch golfer and you always decline
my request to play in golf outings where I could
clearly use the assistance like who are notable athletes, coaches, administrators, etc.
That you have actually had the chance to play golf with.
Speaker 4 (46:21):
Oh, that's a good one. I played with McAfee and
Vin Terry at Eagle Creek. This is probably hell. This
might have been about ten years ago at this point.
I played a few holes with them a decade ago.
And you know, McAfee could really play, and I think
does still play a little bit, and Vanit Harry could
(46:43):
as well.
Speaker 1 (46:45):
Well.
Speaker 4 (46:46):
You know who I played golf with about a month
and a half ago, who is a very very good player.
And it's no surprise. I'm a firm believer. Steph Curry
is the example of this. If you can shoot a basketball,
you can play golf. I'm a huge believer and that
Ryan Klein can really really play golf obviously can really
(47:06):
really shoot a basketball. I don't know if I told
you this rate, but we went out to Abandon Dunes
out in oregone summer. My in laws and I do
a golf trip once a year. For those unfamiliar with
Bandon Dunes, Basically, it's like the Disneyland of adult golf,
super remote out and you know, they got five great
public golf courses out on the coast of Oregon. Is
(47:29):
that actually the only time I've been to the Eugene Airport,
which I know some MYIU fans will descend upon this weekend.
But I was getting ready to, you know, tee off.
I had abandoned trails one of the courses in the
woods out there, and all of a sudden, my.
Speaker 8 (47:40):
Brother in law goes, is that Roger Goodell?
Speaker 4 (47:43):
And indeed it was so Roger Goodell played behind us
this summer.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
He was friendly.
Speaker 4 (47:52):
We made small talk once, you know, I introduced myself
and I told him I was in sports radio in India.
I felt like he all of a sudden backed up
a few feet once that, But no, he was, he was.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
He was very pleasant.
Speaker 7 (48:04):
That's where you stopped Lee and the current I used
to write for Colts dot com and just stop it
right there and and don't go to the to the
current gig. All right, So I can't believe I don't
know the answer this question. Have you been to Augusta
National before?
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
My brother and my mom went in on buying me
for my graduation from college, buy me master's tickets. And
my dad was retiring from teaching, so we went in
twenty eleven. My brother had a connection to get tickets.
We went Friday and Saturday, the year that Charles schwartzel woned.
Ten different guys had a lead on Sunday. It was
(48:42):
one of more chaotic Sundays. But Tiger shot sixty seven
on Friday that year, and I just remember how insane
the secondary ticket marker was on Saturday, and yeah, it
was awesome, awesome Bovam Pope shout out to the State
of Indiana.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
Was that up on the leader board. So we watched him.
Speaker 4 (48:58):
Play on sixteen on that set Saturday. And then twenty nineteen,
the year Tiger won it, we went to a Tuesday
practice round. My brother in law won lottery tickets to practice. Unfortunately,
it rained a good amount on that Tuesday, so we
didn't get to see a ton. But yes, have fortunately,
very very lucky, been twice.
Speaker 7 (49:16):
And now that you have a third kid on the way,
you're not going back anytime soon. So I hope you
enjoyed these trips in both twenty eleven and in twenty nineteen.
What we can enjoy is this Indianapolis Colts football team.
And I talked about your your your sweatshirt gift earlier
today and I said, it struck me that everybody's in
a good mood at the Colts complex, winning cures everything
(49:40):
you know, not everything is is white knuckling things to
the death. You can enjoy things when you're four and one.
What is the difference in covering this Colts team now
versus what you have done for most of the last
ten plus years.
Speaker 4 (49:55):
Yeah, I mean it's just a total one point eighty.
And you know one thing I've brought up in the
Morning show, right, I'm curious like what this belief will
do come December and January for this football team, because
you know they have lost some just huge football games
late in the year, and honestly, not even the ones
that like it mattered for both teams like Houston for example,
(50:16):
to end the twenty three season, like games that mattered
more for the Colts, whereas the other team they're playing
late in the year where it's heading for a top
five draft pick. You know, those teams have beaten the
Colts late in the year. And now I'm thinking ourselves, well,
all of this belief and certainly Daniel Jones is the
top of it. Does that mean the one possession games
that you might lose in December and January do those
get flipped? You know, playing from ahead is just such
(50:38):
a foreign feeling for this franchise, and now they are
in that sort of position. So yeah, I mean, mood, vibe,
all of it, the tone of question, you know, just
how everything is unfolded so far, it's different. I mean,
Sane Seiken is literally answering questions today about is it
weird when you have to take starters out of the game?
Speaker 7 (51:00):
Right?
Speaker 4 (51:01):
I mean, I mean, that's that's not you know, Kurt
Signetti answering a question about Indiana State. That's Shane's second
answering a question about an NFL team. I mean that
is a far cry from you know, are you gonna
ben Chancy Richardson for Joe Flacco and and things like that.
Speaker 7 (51:17):
By the way, since I had this here, Gig, I
couldn't stay for practice. Did you stick around for practice
to see what exactly the practice report looked like?
Speaker 3 (51:27):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (51:28):
Not too bad at all.
Speaker 4 (51:29):
Really anymore, he was a d n P, so he is,
I would say, trending towards probably missing a third straight game.
That's now seven misspractices in a row for him. And
you know, obviously they didn't put him injury reserve, so
I don't think his absence will be too much longer.
But you know, I tend to think, given the nature
of that injury, he probably needs.
Speaker 7 (51:47):
A full week of work and show.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
I know Shane had mentioned us he might do some
stuff on the field, but I tend to think given
that injury Achilles, you would want a full week of
three days of practice but grow over short practice full.
Alec Pearce was back in a blue jersey practicing full.
Bradon Smith was not practicing with the sleeve on the
right leg, but that was just rest for him. So yeah,
(52:13):
all in all, Tyler Goodson remains out, so they'll probably
bring up a Mira Abdullah again, I would guess at
running back, but all in all, I'd say pretty good
win changer for it. And honestly, the big injury to
watch Rake is out in the desert. Kyler Murray did
not practice today, so you know that is going to
be the big monitoring after his foot injury did take
him out for a little bit. And if he does
not play on Sunday, it'll be Jacoby Brissette back in
(52:35):
the building. He used to start in quite often.
Speaker 7 (52:37):
And again not to this is not to demean Jacoby
in any way, shape, form, or fashion, but going from
Kyler Murray Jacoby Brissett is kind of like going from
Anthony Richards and Joe Flacco. That's two completely different offenses.
If they have to switch quarterbacks in Arizona coming up
on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
Yeah, really really different.
Speaker 4 (52:56):
And I don't know how much you were busy obviously
postgame show, but you know, I I got home and
flipped on that Cardinal Titan's game and so basically Murray
left early third quarter. He didn't miss much time. Brissette
played a few steps, but when he came back, I
think in the final four drives of the game, he
didn't run the ball one time, and that is not
(53:19):
who he is the quarterback, and they needed him to
run it as they were trying to, you know, milk
that clock and or convert first downs and win the game.
So you know, how, first off is he going to play?
Speaker 3 (53:32):
There's your first question.
Speaker 4 (53:33):
Secondly, how effective is he going to be? Because if
you're a five to ten pocket passer quarterback, boy, you know,
sign the Colts up for Grover Stewart low out through
lots of interceptions already. So yeah, it's definitely a huge,
huge storyline, and I think, you know, Arizona to me,
is a better team than the Raiders. You know, why
is the spread already a touchdown? I think Murray situation
(53:54):
has a.
Speaker 7 (53:55):
Lot to do with it. All right, let's talk about
a couple of different injuries here, back to the Indianapolis Colts. First, Well,
do we ever get kind of a full explanation as
to the regression that happened for Alec Pierce at the
end of last week?
Speaker 4 (54:06):
The only thing was just woke up Friday and felt bad. So,
you know, we were kind of talking a little bit
about this a practice. You know, I think now in
today's NFL, you know a lot of these guys did
grow up in much more of a concussion culture. Sure,
for lack of a better phrase, So I do think
you see instances like this. Obviously not ideal, but certainly
(54:29):
the hell is the most important thing where you know,
maybe guys might be a little bit more prone to
reporting symptoms or things like that, are just monitoring it
maybe a little bit better. So again with Pierce, I
would slot him rake obviously into the He needs the
full week, I mean, obviously to pass through those five steps.
Speaker 7 (54:44):
All Right, We're gonna get back to Pierce in a second.
But the other thing, and again Shane spoke with us,
and we knew that the Jermaine Pratt move was going
to be made, but we didn't know was the corresponding
move that went with it, and it was to put
Joe Bachi, who was a starter in the game on
Sunday on the IR. Do we have an idea what
Joe's actual injury is at this point.
Speaker 4 (55:06):
Kevin No, And I mean the whole time is kind
of weird and odd to me. Rake of like Shane Steig,
there's nothing happened in the game. Shane Steigen didn't say
anything on Monday, and Shane didn't say anything today and
then like what twenty minutes after we were done with Shane,
it was like, oh, yeah, Joe Boxy's going to injured
reserve and so yeah, it's it's weird and certainly lacks clarity.
(55:28):
So who knows what exactly happened there. They have played
a ton of linebackers, as you know, next to Zire Franklin,
you know, in years past, the Colts have really played
two linebackers, and I mean, I'll go back to the
start of the Ballard era, whether it's you know, Anthony
Walker next to Darius Leonard or Darius Leonard next to
you know, Bobby o'carake, or you know, EJ Speed, you
know Zia Franklin. Of course, like whoever has been those
(55:50):
two linebackers, they played every single snap and it's like
they don't come off the field, Whereas the guy next
to Franklin this year, I mean, they've rotated that position
a ton, So the bar's pretty low for Jermaine and Pratt,
to be honest with you, in terms of just what
he needs to get to that will be better than
what they've had. And it's worth noting that, you know,
I know we've done the Ana Rumo connection thing a
(56:11):
lot this year with the Colts. This is now the
fourth guy I would slot in, as you know, major
history with Anna Rumo. The other three unfortunately have not
really worked out for various reasons. But Pratt should be
in game shape.
Speaker 8 (56:26):
He started for the Raiders for.
Speaker 4 (56:28):
Four games and then you know, it was kind of
vague on that side. You know, I typically watched the
opposing coaches press conference, you know, for that week, so
I've been you know, watching Pete Carroll, you know obviously
last week, and I even watched his Monday one, and
you know, the answers on Pratt were very vague, so
clearly you know this is something that just wasn't going
well for them. But he you know, he spoke super
(56:50):
highly of lou An Arumo. And I think the difference
between this and Xavi and Howard Xavian Howard hadn't played
football in a year, and yet you still gave him
a starting job. The fact that Pratt has played football
here this season, he should be in better football shape
for whatever role you put him in in on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (57:06):
All right, back to the wider sleeper position. Obviously, it's
Kevin Bowen joining us, Greg Rakeshaw filling in for JMB.
It's the ride on ninety three to five and one
O seven to five of the fan the A d
Mitchell you know lesson being taught punishment? What have you?
Assuming Alec Pierce is healthy and Ashton Doolan looked really good,
(57:29):
are you putting Ashton Doolan in front of A d
Mitchell just because of the results Dulan gives you at
this point? How are you handling snaps at the wide
receiver position on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (57:39):
Well, I don't know if you felt this way Rake,
when you know, Shane answered the ad Mitchell question today,
but it sounded early similar to the answer from last week.
Speaker 3 (57:48):
And so I don't.
Speaker 4 (57:51):
You know, me putting on my whatever, my you know,
discipline hat here. I don't think the Ady Mitchell thing
needs to be a multi week you know punishment. And
that's what they did for those that weren't particularly following
it on Sunday. You know, they literally did not play
him until the fourth quarter. That was an outright you know,
benching and might have been even inactive if the Pierce thing.
Speaker 7 (58:14):
Wouldn't have had the setback.
Speaker 4 (58:16):
I don't think you need to do that again. Now
having said that, like, basically, what I would like to
see is, okay, let's say Pierce plays. I think the
next wide out up as the outside wide out. I'm
totally good with that.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
Being Doolin.
Speaker 4 (58:29):
I think he wally pipped for you know, again, lack
of a better term, Mitchell a little bit. But I'm
totally fine with Mitchell getting a couple of snaps, you know,
in very kind of specific situations of like, hey, you know,
we feel like one on one he can win.
Speaker 3 (58:46):
We're gonna dial this.
Speaker 4 (58:47):
Up to him and that happening within the course of
the game, when the game still matters, not the fourth
quarter with Anthony Richardson in there. But again, the Psychond
answer today was a little bit more in line with
what he said last week. So that'll be another thing
to monitor as the least moves along.
Speaker 7 (59:02):
It's the NFL, it's the Colts. They're four and one,
they're atop the AFC South. Heck, they're the number one
seed in the AFC and the way too early to
monitor this. So obviously the Colts. They are the end
all be all of the sports Dot conversation, whether it's
Pacers preseason starting, whether it's Major League Baseball playoffs, whether
it's I you and Oregon, what's the or something else?
(59:25):
What's the other sports story that has your attention this week?
If I lift the Colts Cardinals out of the conversation.
Speaker 4 (59:33):
Well it's gotta be game day, you know, once again
following the Indiana football program, I mean four times and
thirteen games, like, it's just amazing what Kurt Signetti has done.
Speaker 3 (59:47):
And you know, we had.
Speaker 4 (59:48):
Dan wets along a couple of weeks ago break and
he wrote something about Signetti and IU and you know,
he wrote something effective like he was the perfect coach
for the perfect situation, and that to me kind of
like makes a lot of sense. Like obviously Signetti has
won and won historically well before Bloomington, but you almost
needed someone that was going to walk into that athletic
(01:00:09):
program and be and be cocky and say, look, I
don't care what we've done previously, We're not doing that anymore.
This is the way that I've done it, and this
is the way.
Speaker 3 (01:00:19):
That we are going to do it.
Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
You needed someone with that's the one that's going to
take the mic inside of assembly hall twenty four hours
after taking the job, and now he was so irate
with the lack of passion he kind of felt from
talking with people, you know, immediately after taking the job,
and he's like, screw this, I'm gonna say, produce sucks.
And you know, it's like the missions us because frankly,
I think, you know, people need to hear that. So
I would definitely go there. I mean, I enjoyed watching
(01:00:44):
the Pacers last night, and I'm not gonna act like
preseason basketball is always top of mind, but you know,
when you have the year that they did, and then
you have all the differentness, if you will, for this season.
I did enjoy watching that as well. And you know,
when I walked outside this morning, I did think to myself, boy,
for once, the Seamon Greg restaurant might have to add
(01:01:05):
a layer or two to the Friday night Oh heare well.
Speaker 7 (01:01:07):
I am in the Carmel cabana, so I am out
in the elements to some degree because I am calling.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
The game, not the boogermobile for you.
Speaker 7 (01:01:13):
They have not hooked that up yet. Frankly, the drinks
and the pizza right behind me. I'm fine. It means
it means I have to I get to call the
red zone action of the south ends and with my
own eyeballs. Everything else is off the monitor. Thankfully, the
ISC Sports Network camera crew is wonderful, so I have
that luxury. But yeah, I thought about that. I'm like,
(01:01:35):
you know what, Carmel's pretty good this year. We're gonna
have at least a playoff game or two here and
it might be just a wee bit chilly when we
come back for Halloween and later, and that might kick
in this Friday as well. What is in the morning
show tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (01:01:48):
So we will talk more about where things are at
from a Colts Cardinals standpoint kind of explain a little
bit more of why I don't necessarily fall into the oh,
this schedule has been easy.
Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Who cares about the Colts narrative that I think some.
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
People nationally are kind of getting onto it. I think
we're trying to get maybe a Bradnsser or a Gary
Danielsons off the double check with Mark Dyton as they
are on the call for Indiana Oregon coming up three
point thirty on Saturday, which, again, just saying that out
loud about IU football is still crazy to me.
Speaker 7 (01:02:16):
Since you and I almost have identical drives home. Are
you waiting in the alley to go home because we're
still talking? Have I gotten you most of the way
home on this conversation yet?
Speaker 4 (01:02:27):
You have executed it wonderfully? You know exactly that I know.
It was just appointed last Friday, especially when I heard
your voice we I was set up for the octoberfests
over there a mac go at Heart of Mary, But
when I heard your voice on with John at Binkley's,
I'm like, there's nothing I would want to do more
right now than to slide over there and have a
beer with those times dude.
Speaker 7 (01:02:46):
Every fourth car was honking on the way by shows
you the power of this radio station. All Right, beg
good buddy, I'll see you as soon.
Speaker 4 (01:02:53):
All right, talk to you Friday.
Speaker 7 (01:02:54):
Kevin Bowen again, he jeff Ricord, James Boyd, Mark Dyton
The Morning Show tomorrow morning at seven am here on
ninety three to five and one oh seven to five
the fan to the bottom of the fourth we go,
Seattle two Detroit nothing. Mariners loaded the bases but hit
into a double play that scored one, but frankly kind
(01:03:16):
of squelched the inning a little bit. So Detroit's still
hanging around. But that game has gotten to the bottom
of the fourth with Seattle having a two to nothing lead.
Couple of quick blurbs from the National Football League, and
then we will get to our next time out. And frankly,
your best chance to be a part of the show
today is the next two segments of the show. I've
(01:03:36):
got great guests in the five o'clock hour, chars Arbuckle
from Colts Radio, Jeremiah Johnson of Pacers Television UH and
Pacers Weekly, which doesn't start this Saturday, but starts next
Saturday for the basketball season. Here on ninety three to
five and one oh seven to five of the fan.
They've got the five o'clock hour of the program. It's
you and me the rest of the way in this hour.
(01:03:58):
So get your tech now three one seven, two, three, nine,
ten seventy or your phone calls now. I'll happily talk
with you, or you can just tweet to me at
Greg Raystrow, whatever the case may be. But a couple
of blurbs from the National Football League. One again, if
you're going to make a trade to bring him in,
this shouldn't be a surprise. But Joe Flacco has already
(01:04:21):
been named a starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. Wasn't
on the team as of yesterday, or maybe this trade
happened on Monday. I've lost track of time at this point.
One with a team on Sunday, starting for the team
the following week. But Joe Flacco is practicing in Cincinnati
and he gets the starting nod as they take on
(01:04:42):
the Packers, a team he has already played against this season.
You'll see the Packers for a second second time as
the Bengals play in Lambeau this week. Other thing is,
and this was something that took place on Sunday, and
I saw an NFL film's tweet, and I saw an
other thing those related to, and I'm thinking this is
(01:05:02):
a phenomenal idea. The Buccaneers and the Seahawks played each
other on Sunday. It was a great game, thirty eight
thirty five. But those are two teams that broke into
the league together. They were expansion mates in nineteen seventy six.
(01:05:22):
And the two teams both wore their throwback uniforms. Buccaneer
Bruce the cream sickles were on display, and Seattle seemingly
is the team that has carte blanche to do whatever
they want to from a uniform standpoint, like their quote
modern uniforms, and these uniforms they've had basically since like
twenty twelve, some iteration of that. The ones in the
(01:05:45):
middle that were the Matt Hasselbeck, Shawn Alexander, you know,
Marshawn Lynch uniforms of like a ten year span. They
looked like the Aquaman. That wasn't great. But the ones
before that, the og, the blue, the green, the silver.
I've heard the silver helmets with with the wrap around
Seahawk man nose are sharp well they both wore those
(01:06:07):
uniforms on Sunday, and NFL Films put together a great
tweet in terms of basically saying, hey, here's the shots
when they first played in seventy six. Comparing these to
the uniforms that they had in twenty twenty five was
really cool. Go search out on social media. But I
saw somebody do this, like some sort of NFL meme
(01:06:27):
a day or two ago. I'm like, that's a brilliant idea.
Make everybody wear throwback uniforms on Thursday night. Make it
throw back Thursday night football.
Speaker 9 (01:06:39):
That's a great idea.
Speaker 7 (01:06:40):
You have to wear your again. Teams will go alternate uniforms.
You know, we've broken out the Indiana Nights here. You've
had the color Rush years and some of those hits,
some of those miss and some folks say, hey, don't
do that. I'm colorblind. I can't tell which team is which. Again,
love and attended consequences. But I think something we could
all get behind is throwback Thursday night football. You gotta
(01:07:03):
wear throwbacks if you're playing on a Thursday. We can
all get behind that, right.
Speaker 9 (01:07:09):
I'd be absolutely on board for that. I think Seattle
should just make the uniforms they wore in that game
their permanent.
Speaker 7 (01:07:15):
I'm trying out to be the middle aged guy that
says every throwback is a classic with the old rug
game man. That old uniform looks great. Those are some
clean uniforms. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ones. I like those
ones a lot too, but I think Seattle those one
should be their main uniforms. That was a winning game
before the game even started, just because of what those
teams were wearing. Sobsolutely. If you want to talk about
throwback Thursday, we can do that too, Just something to
(01:07:36):
throw out there on the day before Thursday, that being Wednesday. Again,
it's me and you the rest of the hour. You
got something you want to say? Now is the time?
Three one seven, two, three nine, ten seventy at Greg
reiksdraw back in a moment ninety three to five, one
seven to five to the.
Speaker 5 (01:07:50):
Fan, the ride with jmvs.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
Esportos, motor hits, geeks, slaps, bloods, waste toys? Do we
bees say all adore if they think he's a righteous dude?
Speaker 5 (01:08:04):
Ninety three five and one oh seven five the fan.
Speaker 7 (01:08:07):
Now for historical accuracy, I noticed there was one word
or phrase that Edie said that wasn't included in that drop.
Something was edited something we can't say on the radio side. Gosh,
that's why it was edited out.
Speaker 9 (01:08:24):
Yeah, I can't say I'm actually familiar with what that's originally.
Speaker 7 (01:08:27):
God, you're young. It's from Ferris Bueller's Day off. Ah,
she's at Rooney's secretary. Gedie starts pulling pencils and talking
about Ferris Bueller and yeah, you showed your age or
in this case, were complimented to you. A lack thereof
Greg Reikstraw. Producer James on the other side again, Jamvy
is back tomorrow. Here on ninety three five and one
(01:08:50):
oh seven five the Fan. Another score update from Detroit.
Seattle's starting to pull away. It is three nothing in
the top of the fifth, and again that would would
clinch it for the Mariners and they would move on
to the League Championship Series for the first time in
twenty four years now. I asked Kevin Bowen last segment
for a practice report because we had to see like
(01:09:12):
the first twenty minutes of practice, and really the whole
point of it is for us as reporters to go
that guy's not practicing, that guy's not practicing, et cetera,
because of, you know, one to have some actual type
of preparation for this show. Today, I said, you know what,
we're rolling in here at two forty five is probably
not the way to go about doing it. So I
(01:09:32):
skipped out on practice. I stayed for the free food,
which was lovely, but then I came back in and
didn't get to actually see the portion of practice that
I am allowed to see. So here is the official
Colts injury report for today. Tyler Goodson Taekwon lewis with
an illness. And by the way, Taekwon has been great
this year, maybe having the best year of his eight
year career this year, and I'm glad that he's stuck
(01:09:54):
with it. The Colts have stuck with him because the
injuries have wrecked his career more times than not. He's
playing well. So again of importance from an injury standpoint,
it is illness that this is why Taekwon did not
practice again. Kenny Moore was scheduled to work out today
but technically was not a participant in practice. Alec Pierce
(01:10:16):
was a full go, Grover Stewart was a full go,
and again Braden Smith did not participate, but was given
a designation of just rest three one seven, two, three
nine ten seventy.
Speaker 1 (01:10:29):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (01:10:30):
Let's get to the the text line first, and then
we'll get to Mark on the telephone lines. And again,
I am such a diva that I will not read
my own text. Now I do read my own text
in real life, but for radio purposes, I have my
own reader of texts. And that is the guy that
didn't know that clip was from Ferris Bueller's Day Off,
(01:10:52):
Eddie fire Away. He just called me Eddie that I
call you Eddie. You did, Okay, I insulted you. I'm sorry,
James fire Away.
Speaker 9 (01:10:59):
So this is from Brian and Lafayette first starts things
out by saying, it's so enjoyable to listen to Rake
this afternoon. His weekly segments on the fan are always
so informative on all subjects.
Speaker 7 (01:11:09):
Indiana's thank you very much to a family member for
clearly texting the program. I appreciate that.
Speaker 9 (01:11:14):
And then he wants to ask you what's your favorite
sports sport to watch as a spectator, and what is
your favorite sport to call on broadcast? And what levels
high school, college, pro that sort of thing.
Speaker 7 (01:11:24):
I get that question a lot, and I love the
variety of it. I think if I called just one
sport all the time, I would get burned out on
it pretty quickly. So I like doing a mix of
soccer and football and baseball and basketball. Baseball is It's
one that I have made a point to do more
(01:11:46):
baseball over the last couple of years. Like I got
to do a bunch of college baseball about ten fifteen
years ago, and then it kind of went away, and
now I'm back to doing a handful of an out
of state games and back to doing a couple of
Butler games and things like that. Because you can talk
so much about the game, and the pacing of the
(01:12:08):
game gives you strategy. Baseball might be one of the
things that I'm best at, But the thing that I
will call more than anything else's basketball. If I added
up all my college and my high school basketball games
and stuff like Indiana All Stars or the Who's Your
Gym Classic or things like that, I would probably get
to about one hundred games during the course of the year.
(01:12:28):
So if I had to mention something that I enjoyed
the most, it would be basketball. Then again, I'm not
gonna lie I calling an NFL game, even in a
preseason it's pretty rarefied air man. And so I love
what I do. I get paid to go to ball
games for a living. Yeah, I put in a I
put in a lot of work. I put it in
(01:12:49):
a lot of work, a lot of long hours. Like
people this week at next week are on fall break.
I have no idea what that is. I will never
when I'm in this job go on a all break trip. Hey,
I don't want to leave Indianapolis. Right, It's perfect outside, man,
this is the time of year that you want to
live in Indianapolis, right, this is this is while we're here,
(01:13:12):
the leaves about to change. It's seventy degrees. You got
your windows open, and you go home. The fireplace is going.
It's perfect. I don't want to go anywhere. I love
what I do. In terms of favorite sport, to be
a spectator at that is such a rare thing for me.
It doesn't happen. I may go to like four or
(01:13:33):
five sporting events a year where I don't actually have
to work. So like one of the things that me
and my buddy Jason get to do on a regular basis.
And Jason is a good friend of John's as well.
In fact, Jason is from Bedford. Jason had John's mom
as a teacher of his at Bedford North Florence. So
this Jason, who is listening, I'm sure right now knows
(01:13:54):
I'm referencing him. We make it a point to go
to Red's Opening Day every year, so like, and it's
the right time of year for me. It's like the
end of March early April. Things are slowing down a
little bit. I've got the time to kind of carve
out and enjoy it. So probably the favorite thing I
do as a spectator sport is Red's Opening Day every year?
Speaker 9 (01:14:13):
Is that the last sporting event you attended as just
a spectator, not as a I'm actual.
Speaker 7 (01:14:17):
I'm thinking out lad, I'm literally like James since they
got called his name right this time, good for me,
not Eddie, like I'm flipping through the roll of Dex
in my mind. That may be the last game that
I was actually at that I wasn't working. I think
I went to the Indy eleven Open Cup match because
(01:14:38):
we don't get a chance to broadcast those unless we're
doing radio. So I went to the game and watched
ninety minutes of a scoreless draw, and then they went
to added time and they didn't score until I finally
got home, like in one hundred and twentieth minute, and
it was like ten o'clock on a weekend, and I'm like, dude,
I'm getting out of here. Man, I don't need to
watch this. So again, it just doesn't happen. So thanks
(01:14:58):
to the text, I appreciate that. All right, let's get
to the telephone lines. Mark is up next at three one, seven, two,
three nine, ten seventy. Hello Mark, Hey Greg, how are
you doing today? I'm good, sir. How can I help you?
Speaker 8 (01:15:12):
Well, I want to help and this is purely speculation
on my part. I'm not affiliated with any of the
organizations I'm going to mention here, but I want to
help you and I connect the dots on carb Day
twenty twenty.
Speaker 7 (01:15:25):
Six, violent fems, let's go.
Speaker 8 (01:15:28):
Well, I'll tell you what. Here's how we're going to
connect those dots. Two of the best marketing people on
the planet, Jesse Cole, Alison Mellington slash Doug.
Speaker 7 (01:15:38):
Bolls the Savannah Bananas are going to play carb Day
twenty twenty six.
Speaker 8 (01:15:43):
That is correct, and they are scheduled on their twenty
twenty sixth schedule to be in Indianapolis on May twenty second,
So connect the that's my friend.
Speaker 7 (01:15:52):
They're playing Victory Field while the Indianapolis Indians are away,
is what you're telling me.
Speaker 8 (01:15:58):
No, I'm telling you Doug and Jesse and Alison are
pollowing for the greatest Indianapolis sports Day ever.
Speaker 7 (01:16:05):
You think that's going to be CARB Day. Instead of
having thousands of drunks listening to a band, you'll have
thousands of drunks trying to catch a foul ball at
the Indianapolis.
Speaker 8 (01:16:16):
The MLD failed at Bristol this year, Jesse will do
it one better. Okay, they'll make it successful.
Speaker 7 (01:16:23):
Write this down, James. That Mark called his shot on
October the eighth that the Savannah Bananas will be the
headline act at CARB Day. Mark, it's a bold statement.
I like where your head's at anything else for us? Mark?
That's it, sir, Thank you Mark. I'd still like my
idea of the violent fans. And we talked about this
in the summer. If Major League Baseball wants to do
(01:16:46):
a speedway class game, if that's not a one and done,
the place to do it is here. You frankly, you
have it in turn one. You cover up the road
course part. You do it after the five hundred. You
do it after the road course race in May. You
do it sometime in June or July, so you can
use the wrap around covered seating. In turn one, you
(01:17:11):
have the garage area out in left field. You have
you know, gasoline alley left center field. You've got the
suites you can reference down. In turn number two, you've
got the pylon in the shot down the left field line.
If Major League Baseball wants to try that ever, again,
(01:17:33):
let's face it, Indy Car partially owned by Fox, major
League Baseball primary network partner Fox, that's the way it's
gonna go. If the bananas were to come to Nanapolis
Motor Speedway, great. Not sure how you make that work,
like two days before the five hundred, but Mark, I
like were your heead set. I generally like the idea
(01:17:54):
one more segment of your phone calls, your tweets, your text,
or it's just me blithering on for ten minutes. Either way,
I'm back when we come back on ninety three to
five and one seven five of the Fan.
Speaker 5 (01:18:06):
The Ride with JMV By ninety three to five and
one oh seven five the fan.
Speaker 10 (01:18:14):
Yeah, there's absolutely you know, I talked to certain coaches.
I've had a long conversations with Tony Dungee about those
type of things and when to take certain guys out,
and those conversations and are really good. Obviously, you seek
advice from guys that have done it at a high
level for a long time when those situations occur, and
just a lot of respect for Tony on how he
sees it, and so those thoughts are going through my
(01:18:36):
head and during the game too and thinking about him
and what he would do in that situation. So it's
been good though, like I said, you got to make
the right call at the right time on taking certain
guys out if the games are like that, which are
very rare.
Speaker 7 (01:18:52):
Again, that is Shane Steichen from his press conference earlier
today which I was in at ten minutes four, and
that is the hashtag first world problems that the Indianapolis
Colts have had. They have had three blowout wins of
their first four wins this season. Again, that does not happen,
(01:19:13):
uh in terms of the Colts being second in the
league in terms of points scored. But you know, like
I look this up. At one point when it was
forty to three, I think that was the third largest
margin of victory in the history of the Indianapolis Colts.
So let's hit this here. Let's hit this here, truth machine.
(01:19:34):
Nothing like hearing me type in the background, Greg reistro
by the way, filling in on ninety three to five
and one oh seven to five of the fan largest
margin of victory four Colts, And let's see what comes up.
Speaker 1 (01:19:48):
To do to do.
Speaker 7 (01:19:49):
Obviously, a thirty four point win just happened, but at
thirty seven, like only a couple of ones had been
bigger than that since the team had moved to Indianapolis,
and so so the whole origin of that question was, Hey,
these are the problems you want to have, But when
what kind of factors into when do you pull starters,
when do you play starters? Et cetera. And the fact
(01:20:11):
that we can even ask that question after week number
five it shows you kind of what a different stratosphere
this team has been in so far. Now this coming week,
like I would, I would put this up there with
the Rams game. Maybe not as strong of an opponent,
clearly a better team than the Raiders, a better team
than the Titans, and I think, frankly a better team
(01:20:35):
than the Dolphins of Week number one, but it's a
team in Arizona that a The obvious question mark is
is Kyler Murray going to play or not? Didn't practice today,
but do you see him make an effort to play
or is he a reduced player. There's not been a
lot of comparisons between Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz over
the years. Remember when Carson Wentz basically because the Colts
(01:20:57):
didn't like what they had behind him, like had to
play like when he was hurt a couple of different
times early in the two thousand and he couldn't move
and the Colts offense was pretty much put because of it.
I would think of the same thing if Kyler Murray
has to play on like a bad wheel like I can't,
if he really can't move and he's gonna be a
(01:21:18):
pocket quarterback. Man, Do I like the Colts chances coming
up on Sunday afternoon? But again to that question, I
literally bring that up because it's such rarefied here the
Colts have been and even with the loss to the
Los Angeles Rams, but also the fact that it makes
your hearken back to the days when Tony Dungey would
(01:21:38):
have to figure that out multiple times, like there was
like a month of a season where Jim Sorgy got
the ball the fourth quarter, like every game for the Colts,
like when they decimated the NFC North, like the Bears,
the Lions, other teams over the course of a three
or four week stretch where Peyton barely saw the fourth quarter.
(01:22:00):
Daniel Jones in this Indianapolis Colts offense has almost been
that good where they have replicated something like that three
out of their first four wins of the season. Now again,
this Arizona team, you're not sure what to make of
them because of is it going to be Murray or
is it going to be Brisette, And just like every
(01:22:23):
other team, they are going through injuries. You know, for
the Raiders last week, it was not having your top
two tight ends and namely not having Bowers. For the Cardinals,
it's not having your top couple of running backs. Knowing
that Connor has done for the year and on the
ir but you're not sure what to make of a
team that has found a way to lose, like literally
(01:22:45):
on the last play of the game, each of the
last three weeks, Like, does that start to have like
this cascading effect on your season as to how it's
going to go, or you know, does that tell you, hey,
you're in for a fight all the way to the
final play Again, all of that gets kind of outshine
(01:23:10):
by is murrhying a play or not. You know, it's
kind of like, kind of like when I talked about
this Colts team two months ago, when we were having
conversations in late July, early August, mid August, and I said,
you know, there's not a lot of position battles other
than the obvious one that we're talking about that. You know,
there are two questions and everything else is just detail.
(01:23:33):
Is just filling time, is filling out forms on a page.
Whom the who's the quarterback going to be? We got
an answer on that one, and this is going to
be a playoff team. We like the answer we're getting
so far on that one. Right. Sometimes you know, we
like to get all into these details and figure all
(01:23:53):
these things out, and sometimes it's just one question that
smacks in the face and until you get that resolved,
you know, no, Well, when it comes to this game
on Sunday, that question is, hey, is Kyler Murray going
to be the quarterback of the Cardinals or not? And
until we know that, we're not sure what to make
of the game on Sunday. By the way, I break
(01:24:14):
away from talking about the Colts because all of a sudden,
Detroit Tigers are so in some life. After the Mariners
scored three times in the first five innings, the Tigers
have now scored three times in the bottom of the
fifth elimination game for the Tigers. Mariners lead that one
two games to one in a best of five series,
but that game at Kamerica Park is now tied at
three in the bottom of the fifth inning. If you
(01:24:36):
happen to care about that, three one, seven, two, three, nine,
ten seventy, that is the telephone number. That is also
the text line if you want to join the conversation
as well. Again coming up in the next hour of
the show, Charles Arbuckle. In the next segment of the program,
Jeremiah Johnson. After that, James has grabbed a microphone which
(01:24:57):
tells me we have a text to read to our
listening audience. Please go ahead.
Speaker 9 (01:25:02):
This is from Dave in Buffalo, New York, Okay. He says,
this year reminds him of nineteen ninety five when Jim Harbaugh,
who was in the middle of a career crossroad, led
the team to the conference finals. They were all waiting
for the wheels to fall off, and they never did,
except for getting screwed versus Pittsburgh.
Speaker 7 (01:25:21):
I was around for that season. I wasn't covering them,
but I was a sophomore in colleger So I vividly
remember that, and I'm literally typing in the Wikipedia results
because i want to remember kind of how that season
played out, like how it started and then how it
kind of transpired. Like the Colts kept finding these ways
(01:25:42):
to have like these you know victories. That was ninety
six where they were they had these comeback wins like
they had won against the Jets. But that Colts team
was one and two. Then they got hot, and this
kind of hovered around five hundred most of the way.
But it was in the playoffs where they took off.
Remember this Colts team had to beat the Patriots ten
(01:26:05):
to seven to be a playoff team, and then win
in San Diego and then win in Kansas City and
then go to Pittsburgh. This team has been hotter off
the start than that team obviously having Jim Harbaugh who
had been discarded by the Bears by the time that
he got here. He and Daniel Jones in somewhat of
(01:26:28):
a similar situation. But that Colts team did not give
you anything the way that this team has kind of
made you feel early.
Speaker 1 (01:26:37):
Now.
Speaker 7 (01:26:37):
The funny thing is, if the Colts lose on Sunday,
that Colts team you reference from thirty years ago and
this Colts team here would have the exact same record. Basically,
what I'm telling you is this, I think the way
that we feel about the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday is
dramatically different based on five and one versus four and two.
(01:27:02):
Consider this like a separation Sunday for the Indianapolis Colts.
They are amongst the teams with the best records in
all of the National Football League and obviously in the
AFC right now. To me, there's a big difference and
being five and one, going back to LA and being
four and two. At four and two, you're still good
(01:27:26):
five and one, you seemingly are on a path for
a chance of being great. So I think this Sunday
is a big one for this football team. We'll talk
about it what chars our Buckle from the Colts Radio Network.
When we come back, it's Greg Reikstraw filling in for JMV.
Ninety three to five and one seven five The Fan.
(01:27:47):
The ride with JMV.
Speaker 3 (01:27:48):
I remember Mom's the work, certainly.
Speaker 1 (01:27:51):
But.
Speaker 5 (01:27:55):
Ninety three five and one oh seven five the Fan,
I guess you won know.
Speaker 7 (01:28:12):
Case you're winning. Where jamb is, He's simply enjoying a
couple of days off. He is back tomorrow. He is
on location both tomorrow and Friday, which she usually is
this time of year. So John returns tomorrow. My name
is Greg Raichstraw filling in one more hour of that
for you, and I've got some good guests to help
me pass the time, like joining us now on the
(01:28:34):
Andy Moore Automotive Group hotline again. He is part of
the trio of analysts that I'll do a fantastic job
alongside Matt Taylor this year for Indianapolis Colts Football. He
is next in the booth next Sunday in Los Angeles.
It is Charles Arbuckle that joins us. Now, Hello, buck
how you doing I'm doing well?
Speaker 1 (01:28:52):
Man? JMB can't be taken off a smooth you know
Bobby Carwell intro music for me, of course, the famous
story about Bobby Callwell was whenever people finally fong, you know,
back in the seventies, they didn't show people right, so
they were like, who is that blue eyes soul guy
singing that great song.
Speaker 7 (01:29:14):
Well, it's the same reaction they have that when they
now see skinny JMV. It's the same. I can't believe
that's that guy again. I think he was in bad
shape before. He's just kind of gotten that skinny. I
don't have that problem yet. I need to get working
on it. All right, So Colts are four and one.
We're all absolutely giddy about it here. My guesses you
(01:29:37):
feel the exact same way.
Speaker 3 (01:29:40):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 1 (01:29:40):
I mean, I think there are some issues. You know
that like any team. You know, the Spenser Trader situation
I think is one that I'm really looking to see
if it's gonna, you know, how that's going to be rectrorined.
I know they signed a new kicker, but just meaning
that he was really looking like he was going to
be the guy to start getting this groove playing better.
(01:30:01):
You know. The linebacker situation. I know they signed your
main Pat Pratt. I think today or yesterday. So I
think when you look at situations, yeah, there's some things
that you can say they need to be corrected. But
remember earlier in the season, Greg, we were talking about
them scoring in the red zone, and now they just said, Okay,
y'all got a problem with us not scoring in the
(01:30:22):
red zone. People, We're going to show you we can
go in the red zone. So every time, you know,
the defensive backfield also is one situation. Where as good
as Ward has played and buying them, I love what
Nick Cross is doing. He's really playing some good football.
I think we kind of forget about him. You don't
have kennymore back there, but you got some guys that
they signed. Makai Blackman is one of them. You know,
(01:30:43):
Jonathan thatwis with other guys that they're it seems like
every week they're really trying to make the roster better,
especially in the secondary and the linebacker crew. So when
you're doing that, that's all you can ask for and
you can just keep getting wins. If you get a dub,
you get happy with the dub and you just keep
trying to figure out how to get the next one.
Speaker 7 (01:31:01):
Obviously, you are qualified to talk about all aspects of football,
but especially the tight end position. Just how good has
Tyler Warren been in five games in the National Football League.
Speaker 1 (01:31:13):
I know I told Matt this the first day I
saw him a practice when I came out there, and
you know fall camp and I may have said the
same thing to you, but I said, he's gonna catch
seventy passes. And people are like, well, how do you
know that? I said, just watch what they're doing with them.
Watch how comfortable he was. Not only would Daniel, but
it seemed like Anthony Richardson was looking for him as
well when that was that combination of who was going
(01:31:35):
to be the starter. He just creates so much in
the interior and now we're starting to see him do
some other things. And when I say the interior, I
mean in between the numbers, in between where the money
has to be made, where the hash marks are, when
you got safety that can come and still a few
of them in the league that can knock your block off.
He's able to really help this team, and Daniel seems
(01:31:58):
to be very comfortable. Look for him for first downs
and problem we's gonna be more and more touchdowns as
the season goes on. The other thing is he's not
only a willing blocker. He will he will punch you
in the mouth. And we sing it from different places
where he's been back on backer in the backfield where
he comes and hits the linebacker moves him out of
the way so JT can make this thing happen. Or
(01:32:18):
on the edge, slice blocks of those you know whatever
whatever teams call him. We used to call them slice
when I coach, because you wanted your lot, you're tight
end to go to the edge of the line and
get that linebacker or edge guy and just slice him
out of the picture. So you're running back to either
go outside or cut back inside. So I like what
he's doing every single way, and it doesn't seem like
(01:32:40):
he's a rookie. Seems like he's a guy that's been
playing like a four or five year vet. Uh. The
only thing I would say to him is your arms along.
You can't push off, but do like Michael Irving, get
in on him, grab them and then push them. You
know he's gonna learn that, he's gonna learn what he
can get away with that lad one last week was
was oh man, that was crack right. It was awful,
(01:33:04):
but they're looking for it now because I think the
book on him is that he's going to push off
and he doesn't have to, and that was just I
thought that was a bad call. He's going to learn
how to get around those reps. And I like Tyler
because he's always trying to improve his game. Every time
I see him, he's looking, he's talking to the vets,
he's working, just really trying to figure it. Don't talk
(01:33:24):
a lot, but he makes a lot of things happen
in this offense.
Speaker 7 (01:33:27):
By the way, Charles R. Buckle, as our guest in
his math, was spot on. Tyler Warren is currently on
pace for seventy eight catches in his rookie season. For
those of you that are curious in terms of keeping track,
when you saw Daniel Jones in preseason, whether it's training
camp or the games that you got to do, and
when you hear he's going to get the starting job,
(01:33:49):
what did you think he would look like and how
has he surpassed that or is this kind of what
you thought he was capable of doing.
Speaker 1 (01:33:59):
I thought he was capable well doing the GREG. I
didn't know when it was going to happen. I knew
it was going to happen with him in this offense.
And here's why. I mean, I've watched Daniel Jones since
he was in high school. I've seen him at Charlotte Latton,
I saw him at Duke. You know, I called some
games at Duke. I know Cutcliffe well. I know he's
learned under the pay on the man, under the mannings.
None of that was what I was looking at. What
(01:34:20):
I was looking at was he was very athletic. He
was as a hell of a basketball player plays lacrosse.
I don't know if he's great at lacrosse, but he
plays it. He's just one of those guys that was very,
very studious h and people tended to gravitate towards him,
even at an early age when I just I didn't
know him well, but I was you know when you
(01:34:40):
watch sports, and my kids both went to Latin, so
I knew him from those days. But what was impressive
was this league man can cheer you up and spit
you out in New York. How many different officer coordinators
he had, how many weapons did he truly have, and
how many lineman play consists in that program with the
(01:35:01):
Giants that was going to give him a chance that
he's getting now, That to me was what I saw,
and I kept saying, he doesn't have to be Superman,
even though he has a capability. He's he started sixty
nine or seventy games up to that point, and he's
consistently been a sixty eight, sixty nine, seventy percent guy.
(01:35:22):
So when you see that, I just had the feeling
that it was going to be good because I saw
the close weapons. I mean, I just knew and I
was like, well, once he gets a chance and gets
to play behind this offensive line that's going to protect
him and they're going to have a running game with
Jonathan Taylor, the weapons are going to be there. He
just has to make sure he's making the right decision.
(01:35:43):
And right away he started off looking very comfortable, and
he put the time in by going and making sure
that he knew what he had to do. He knows
the offense, and he's got guys comfortable and he makes
them He puts the ball in positions where they can
make plays with it. That's when you're a quarterback and
you can do that, guys are gonna make plays for you.
They're gonna get the ball down the field, They're gonna
(01:36:04):
do things to because they know Daniel's gonna give you
a chance. And he spreads the ball around, which doesn't
make everybody happy, but it keeps everybody on edge because
you know you're gonna get your shot. You might get
Grint and Row, you might get one. When you get him,
he's gonna give them to you.
Speaker 7 (01:36:20):
Well again, Charles Arbuckler guest Greg Reikstraw filling in for JMB.
It's ninety three to five and one oh seven to
five of the fan. One of those guys that made
the plays when given the opportunity last week was Ashton Doolan.
When it's a guy that's normally a Special Teams guy,
a vet that everybody in that locker room loves. When
he has a game like that, what does that do
for everybody in the room?
Speaker 1 (01:36:41):
Man, I said it, and I'll say it again and
people laugh at me. I said, he's as tough as
one year old beef turkey, and he just he every
time he gets a chance, Greg, he's gonna make a play.
And he showed you on Special Teams coaches said, hey,
wait for your turn. And you know, ad as talented
(01:37:02):
as as he is, he needs to look at what
he's seeing with Ashton Doling. Whenever Ashton has a chance
to play D two guy coming in there, he's going
to make it. Play on whatever team or whatever opportunity
he gets. And I think that's the critical piece. When
you watch a team playing well, then you start seeing
guys stepping up that you didn't expect to. And that's
what I love about watching him and this Coats team
(01:37:23):
right now because it just seems like whoever whose turn
is it to make plays and not any jealousy with
other guys when that guy makes a play. So that's
the part that I like about this ball club. And
I was really happy for Ashton Dooling because that was
a long time coming for him, and I think people
didn't expect oh no, he shouldn't be starting. Oh no,
he shouldn't be the second guy. Yeah, he should be
(01:37:46):
when it's the opportunity and Alex peers hopefully when he
comes back. Now you have another two A, two B
and possibly to C if AD can get things together
along with don't forget about Josh Downs, who says, hey,
I'm your sly guy make first downs every time. So
they've got an abundance of people that can make plays.
That's why as a receiver, you better be ready because
(01:38:06):
it's gonna.
Speaker 7 (01:38:07):
Come your way if it is not Kyler Murray and
Jacoby Brissette as the quarterback on Sunday. And again we
won't know that for sure until Friday, maybe even until
game time on Sunday. It could be a reduced Kyler
Murray from a mobility standpoint. You can't underestimate the impact
that has on Sunday's game. Just your thoughts on that
possibility comes Sunday at one o'clock.
Speaker 1 (01:38:29):
Well, Kyler Murray that doesn't have, you know, the leggs
that make him special, gives you an opportunity with this
team that's really put pressure on people with therefore, and
adding pressure with the linebacker Jacoby Brissett, you know, as
good as he's been in this past, does not have
the mobility and the capability to get away. So you
(01:38:50):
know you have two potential guys that you have a
chance to get after and if you can get four
or five with a lot of pressure, get their hands,
get your hands in their face, block balls. That gives
you a chance. This team. What I like about this
team right now is when they're supposed to be the team.
They don't mess around, They get out there and do it.
So I think that's the other part that I have
been pretty impressed with this year. There's been some times
(01:39:13):
where you think, like last week the Raiders, I thought, man,
this is gonna be a good game. They did not
let the Raiders have any breathing room after that first quarter.
So I think that's the thing you have to do
against the team like the Cardinals before you fly out
to the Chargers, who are the Chargers have been struggling
a little bit, but they're going to be tough when
you're playing there so far, but I think this opportunity
(01:39:35):
to get this win back to back weeks against the
Raiders and the Cardinals is really really critical for a
team that looks like it wants to be in the
playoffs and not just be in the playoffs and make
some damage and noise in the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (01:39:47):
If we looked at the best teams in the AFC
so far, and I can just rattle off all the
one win teams, but just the teams that have looked
the best and the teams that the best pedigree coming in,
you'd put the Bills, you put the Colts, you put
the Jaguars in that group. You'd probably go and put
the Broncos, even the Chiefs at two and three. I
would put them in that group, and the Chargers again,
if they're healthy, I put them in that group too.
(01:40:08):
How do you see the Colts stacking up against the
best teams in the NFL right now?
Speaker 1 (01:40:14):
Well, we saw them when they played the Broncos, right
and that's a good Broncos team. Man, They're not a
one loss team. But I would put them right there
the Chiefs, depending on how they're going to play and
how their defense because Chris Jones hasn't played very well
this year, and I don't think that unless he's not
healthy or if there's something going on, if that's rectified,
(01:40:35):
that's a different team. But right now, I think people
around the league are saying, Hey, this Colt team is
pretty good. The Jaguars, I gotta fee it some more.
I mean, I've been impressed with what they've done so
far this year, and they look a lot better. But
to fall down, get up and still run and score
touchdown late in the game. But what I did like
(01:40:56):
about what Trevor did the other night, Trevor Lawrence, was
give them opportunit unities. Even when the Chiefs answered, he
answered a couple of times, so that showed me that
he's in a better position. But I think when you
look at this Coats team, people are starting to say, hey,
that might be the team we need to be paying
attention to. And you can give yourself that each time
you stack these wins and really go through the season
(01:41:18):
and do enough of those where people start talking about
you as opposed to the other teams that everybody expected
to be the top dogs in the AFC.
Speaker 7 (01:41:25):
All right, so Buck is getting as many Colts game
as he can, all those on the road. He and
Joe Wrights are splitting the road games. Rick Venturia, obviously
he's having the home games from a college football schedule.
What's keeping you busy these days?
Speaker 1 (01:41:39):
Well, you know, it's funny this time of year. I
don't get as many and then it'll pick up, probably
right after that Chargers game, so you know, I did
about three straight SEC games, and then it'll be wherever
over the next few weeks. So I keep an eye
on it. But I think for me, it'll be ACC,
it could be SEC, it could just be any conference.
(01:42:00):
And that's why I'm always kind of ready and looking,
especially the big fan. Now if you look this week,
I'm interested to see what I use gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:42:08):
Do in Oregon.
Speaker 1 (01:42:09):
Right. I think that's that's a huge game. As I
look look across the landscape of the Big Ten, those
two are teams that I you, we didn't expect to
be this good this year. And Kurt Signetti is like,
you know, google me, I just win and uh Mandova
plan out of his mind. They got some receivers, they
got a defensive play as well. But Oregon it's so
(01:42:30):
fast and their physical, So I look at that. But yeah,
this time of year is good because I get a
chance to kind of get locked in with the Colts
and then once college football starts, it'll be right back
at it. So I'm excited about it.
Speaker 7 (01:42:43):
I can tell you who looked good last week? You
a Brewins looked good last week.
Speaker 1 (01:42:49):
You know what I'll say this man, that was a
huge win. I would say Penn State got beat twice
by Oregon. But all so, I'll give a lot of
credit to Tim Skipper Kevin Coyle as his defensive coordinator.
Those two guys both for Fresno State. Guys, if you
know anything about Fresno State. They punch you in the mouth.
(01:43:12):
That tough physical and that's the mentality you CLA defense
is looking to play. And when you get normal Zoni
as an analyst and Jerry Neuheisl's offensive coordinator, who should
have been calling plays for Deshine Pop probably and before
that learned under Mazoni and his dad and Tip Kelly
and some others. That's Nico looked the best he looked
(01:43:34):
all year and they ran the football effectively. I know
this week is not going to surprise anybody, but I
think Jerry with that pot I mean, his positivity and
his enthusiasm, it just rubbed off. You can see it.
And there's a different ball club now people know they're coming.
Let's see if they can do it again.
Speaker 7 (01:43:50):
What will it take for that program to be successful
in the Big ten, What sort of investments need to
be made? How far away are they from potentially contending
in a whole new league for them?
Speaker 1 (01:44:05):
Well, I mean I'd start off with the athletic director
needs to change, and we've said that for a while,
but it will take me too long to explain why
and that what that needs to look like. But I
think they have a chancellor now who came from the
University of Miami and understands what winning looks like. Look
at that Miami team now, Look he was there for
eight or nine years, I can't remember. UCLA has to
(01:44:27):
just commit to being really really good in football, what
Oregon did a few years back when they hired Chip Kelly,
when they really went all in with Nike and they
really started deciding, Hey, this is what we're going to do.
We're going to be really really good in football. No
matter what it looks like, what the landscape looks like,
we're going to have nil. We're going to make sure
our guys we have a collective that's strong, and we're
(01:44:49):
going to just be committed to football. UCLA has always
been a school that's had a lot of potential, but
they've rested on the fact that there's so many other
great programs that are usually Olympic sports and not football.
If you want to be good in football, you need
to take a look at what Vanderbuilder has done with
Clark me You've got to look around the landscape and
some other programs too that have just said we're high academic.
(01:45:12):
Even when David Shall was doing at Stanford before that
program kind of went off the rails. You have to
take those things into consideration and do everything you can
to say I'm committed to football. I'm going to do
everything it takes to be the best in football. And
then UCLA has to finally say, if sc has been
doing it for all these years and people look at
them as the cream of the crop on the West Coast,
(01:45:35):
you got to be strong enough in your mindset to
say that's what we're going to do. We're going to
be better than that CE and go out and spend
the money and do that. And I know it's going
to take a lot. It has to be a mindset
shift on that campus. Me being away from it long
enough now seeing how programs look to have come from
nothing and become successful, I can tell them, I can
(01:45:55):
show them, But I'm not on that executive committee. So
hopefully if somebody with a strong enough voice that can
Casey Washerman and the other people on that committee this
is what you have to do to be successful in football.
And I don't know if they have those people, but
we will see.
Speaker 7 (01:46:08):
Finally, before I let you go, how far away is
the Rose Bowl from campus? I realize LA traffic's a
whole are the thing. But again it's not. It's a
historic facility, it's an amazing facility. Just how far away
from campus is the Rose.
Speaker 1 (01:46:21):
Bull It takes about forty five minutes on an hour,
depending on the traffic. Now, what you will see is
when when that school is good, even when other teams
come out, you'll have seventy thousand, eight thousand, ninety thousand,
because people in LA tend to be front runners. When
things are good and teams look good, they're going to
(01:46:42):
go see them. I think the one thing with the
Rose Bowl Lease, I don't think they can get out
of that, and there's no more talk about well, let's
move them here, let's move them there. Let's just be
committed to making sure that the students can get on
buses or some kind of way. They've always done it
in the past, and they get out there and they
don't have a problem with that because it's a long
way from campus, you know, twenty five twenty six miles,
(01:47:05):
but with LA traffic it's at least forty five minutes.
So that's the thing to me that if you can't
change the least, you do everything in your power to
make sure when the students get back on campus that
they're willing and ready to go, just like they do
at Miami. They're not right by right, cool game. They
found ways, Yeah, they found them. You know, That's what
I'm saying to me. There's examples of how you can
(01:47:28):
do it and do it consistently, but you got it
starts from the top. And that's why I said, there's
some things in the athletic department that I think needs
to change, and until it does, we're going to keep
seeing some of this. Well we'll be we'll be, you know,
good if we'll win seven or eight games. And that's
not good enough for me.
Speaker 7 (01:47:46):
You can tell I have hit on Bucks two passions
at least in football, the Colts and the Bruins, over
the course of our twenty minute conversation. Again, it's great
to have you back on the team. My friend will
do it again soon.
Speaker 1 (01:47:57):
All right, thanks, Greg, take it.
Speaker 7 (01:47:58):
You got a Charles R. Bu joining us, and again
Buck is in the booth with uh with Matt coming
up next Sunday when the Colts go back to So
Far Out to take on the Los Angeles Chargers. First,
it is this week against the Cardinals, and the Cardinals
injured report has come out. It is lengthy, a lot
of guys that were limited participation, but again officially Kyler
Murray did not participate in practice today for the Cardinals
(01:48:21):
due to a foot injury. Things continue to improve for
the Tigers. They now lead by a score of seven
to three in the bottom of the sixth. It appears
that that series could be heading for a fifth and
decisive game in Seattle a couple of days from now.
Cubs and Brewers underway will update you on that one
as well, and we'll talk to a guy that well,
(01:48:42):
he's a renaissance man. He's a sideline reporter, he enjoys
horse racing. He's on a broadcaster thing or two in
horse racing during course from his downtime. And today he's
a farmer. We'll explain when we come back on ninety
three to five and one seven to five of.
Speaker 5 (01:48:58):
The Fan, the Ride with JMV.
Speaker 1 (01:49:03):
Play him played that Me and his Money.
Speaker 5 (01:49:06):
Ninety three to five and one oh seven five the Fan,
big fan of Teddy KGB.
Speaker 7 (01:49:12):
We can play that rejoinder anytime you would like. Also
a big fan of giving away tickets. So apparently the
volleyball song from top gun has become our theme for
giving away volleyball tickets.
Speaker 9 (01:49:25):
It's about the only volleyball theme song I can think
of off the top of my head.
Speaker 7 (01:49:29):
Val Kilmer was it Anthony Edwards, not the one that
played against the Pacers last night, But the guy from
that was an er, Tom Cruise and Rick Rossovich I
believe were the four actors that were involved that scene.
Rick's dad, who is a long time NFL player with
the Eagles amongst other teams.
Speaker 1 (01:49:46):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (01:49:46):
They will not be appearing in the Monin Spike match
next Thursday, but Indiana and Purdue will be. And call
the number four right now at three one, seven, two,
three nine, ten seventy, you're getting four passes to go
check out that historic college alleyball match inside of Gamebridge
Field House called the Number four gets four free passes
the Moon on Spike match coming up next Thursday night
(01:50:07):
at Gamebridge Field House. While we are doing that, let's
go to the Andymore Automotive Group hotline for the last
time today to a guy that again is a man
apparently of more talents than I knew about, Jeremiah Johnson
farm hand when he is not working for Pacers Sports entertainment.
How was your day on the farm today, JJ?
Speaker 3 (01:50:29):
Fantastic? Greg.
Speaker 2 (01:50:30):
You know the Twitter account pacers JJ, I need a
different one that says farmer JJ. But yeah, I've got
a little farm in my blood. My mom's family all
farmers up in the business Manchester area. But I'm friends
with the Gore family and Gore Farms in Monrobia. Whenever
I have a free day and they need some help,
(01:50:52):
I offer it up and I enjoy being out there
helping him. And they're busy combine in and they need
some extra help disc in some of the being feels
to get them ready to be planning corn in the spring.
So had a great day on the farm and I'm
looking forward ough to chat a little basketball with you.
Speaker 7 (01:51:09):
What what all different pieces of farm machinery do you
feel competent in driving?
Speaker 2 (01:51:15):
Well, they don't trust me to drive this tractor on
the road in too many mailboxes and power line. So
I'll drive the truck behind them. They'll get it in
the field and ready to go.
Speaker 1 (01:51:28):
And this is maybe maybe not quite as.
Speaker 2 (01:51:30):
It's capular tractor, not not the full combining tractor. But
again this is my My specialty is disking. So and
you know, people ask how you keep a straight line.
I didn't realize this till I started last year with
them and helping them out. It's all GPS right now,
so it's really hard to screw up. I mean, it's
like farming in twenty twenty five is not the way
(01:51:53):
my grandpa used to have to do it.
Speaker 7 (01:51:54):
It's laser tracked and load jack. You're you're in good shape.
It'll tell you when when you're offline. Now, your lovely
wife helped style you, because that's what she does for
a living. In terms of your wardrobe during a Pacers game,
does this also happen when you're on the farm as well?
Speaker 1 (01:52:12):
Not exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:52:13):
No, it's don't wear something too nice because you're gonna
get it ruined.
Speaker 3 (01:52:17):
But today I.
Speaker 2 (01:52:17):
Had Today I had a Hickory pacer sweat you're on.
I felt like that was actually appropriate. So I don't
think she really even cares when I wear in the
tractor as well as it's not something that.
Speaker 3 (01:52:27):
I need to keep night.
Speaker 7 (01:52:28):
All right, since we're talking about the family, I'll get
all the family questions out of the way first. How
does the upcoming basketball season designs all looking for your son?
Speaker 2 (01:52:37):
Well, it should be, you know, excited about it. They're
a younger team and they're gonna have to replace a
lot of scoring, but you know, they've got a lot
of guys and I'm hoping they can play fast and
subtle up maybe play a little bit like.
Speaker 1 (01:52:52):
And he's still been at.
Speaker 2 (01:52:53):
Football practices now, so he haven't been able to work
out with the basketball team as much. But again looking
forward to the seeing in what the Eagles can do
this winner.
Speaker 7 (01:53:01):
All right, what if anything do we learn about your
day job as in the Indiana Pacers one thirty five,
one thirty four, And again I know better than most
you put preseason results aside pretty quickly. What do we learn,
if anything, as to what took place up in Minneapolis
last night?
Speaker 2 (01:53:16):
Well, I like the way they started and specifically the
way the starters were able to kind of pick up
where they left off. There was some concern could they
play that same style without Tyreek Caliburton, could they play
as fast? And I was impressed at one of the
first you know, baskets they made. They go into the
full court press and they get a steal and teams
know that's coming, and still I think it catches them
(01:53:39):
off guard. And so I think they can continue to
push the tempo. Andrew Nemhard you saw him maybe not
guarding the best player on the Timberwolves or maybe the
best backcourt player. Maybe you're going to see more of Hey,
Bennett Matheren. You're gonna have to guard the top scorer
because Andrew Nemar is going to be primary ball. That's
(01:54:00):
the dynamic that I'm looking forward to watching. But the
way the starters played against the Timberwolf starters in Minnesota
had already played one game, although I don't think Anthony
Edwards had played in that first preseason game for Minnesota,
but at least the plus minus for those guys compared
to Minnesota starters, it was. It was very impressive. And
so the other, you know, kind of concern I had
(01:54:22):
going into this season without Tyree Taliburton and then not
having that true stretch five and Miles Turner is could
the three point shooting be on a nightly basis good enough? Well,
the way they started, as long as you can get
these guys open looks, and that's the way that offense
is set to, you know, pop it around the perimeter
and wherever it stops. If you're open you need to
shoot it. They at least showed they've got enough shooting
(01:54:45):
last night. Now it'll come in, it'll go. You'll see
that over the course of an eighty two game season,
but at least one night in on the preseason. As
you mentioned, I like what I saw, all.
Speaker 7 (01:54:55):
Right, So CD and I talk yesterday, and again it's
pretty obvious you're going to see a different role for
Andrew Demhard, more of a chance for Benedict Matheren, Frankly,
more of a de fine role for Jars Walker. Let's
talk about some of the other guys and a guy
that you know you got to get big things from,
and I'm not sure the way this team is belt
there is a guy that is going to be the guy.
(01:55:15):
But if there's a guy that you would think would
be closest to the guy, it's going to be Pascal Siakam.
How does his role look different, if at all that
it looked a year ago, It.
Speaker 2 (01:55:27):
Won't look a lot different. It'll just be you don't
look and you don't have Miles Turner there, and you
don't have Tyree Telliburton. So I'm guessing the field goal
attempts will be up a little bit and I've been
just impressed if you look at the time since he
joined the team, you know, two seasons ago from Toronto,
and how quickly he was able to adapt to a
(01:55:48):
style that is a little bit different than he had.
Speaker 3 (01:55:50):
Been used to. He wants to play pass.
Speaker 2 (01:55:53):
He's got himself into shape to play that pacer style,
and you see the ball never sticks in his hands.
When I remember, you know, the best of the Raptors
when he was playing that one season with Kawhi Leonard,
but really over a long period of time with you know,
Fred van Vlid and Kyle Lowry, I remembered more of
you know, him getting the ball in the post, creating,
(01:56:14):
making moves, and he can still do that, but him
helping with that offense, even helping a little bit with
some of that that point guard responsibility, that primary ball handler.
He has that ability to take some of the pressure
off of Andrew Nemard really as much as anyone else
in that starting lineup. And so I think this is
an opportunity that he will embrace. He never will shy
(01:56:37):
away from having more shots or more opportunities, but just
being the championship experience and the veteran leader and even
a louder voice with Tyre Sliburton not playing.
Speaker 1 (01:56:49):
He is the guy.
Speaker 2 (01:56:50):
I mean, I think you're accurate. I mean, it is
a team that is best by the some of the parts,
all everyone contributing, but Pascal Siakam is the guy. He
made the All Star team last year and for them
to be good, he has to be an All Star
again this year.
Speaker 7 (01:57:05):
Farmer Joe aka Jeremiah Johnson with us here on ninety
three to five and one seven five the fan. Couple
quick things and you've had a long day on the farm.
We'll let you get home and enjoy the rest of
your day. I think the five, whoever it's gonna be,
is gonna be likely the fifth offensive option. What do
you see that could separate Isaiah Jackson from James Wiseman,
(01:57:25):
from Jay Huff from Tony Bradley. How do you see
that position in that rotation shaping up?
Speaker 2 (01:57:32):
Probably just defense and rebounding and rebounding probably the most important.
That's been an area that the team has struggled with
at times over the years. You know, they're completely different
kinds of players, and so it could actually be the
kind of thing where one night ye're emphasizing more of
a stretch five and that's where Jay Huff would come
(01:57:52):
into play. But I think the familiarity with the teammates
and the system gives Isaiah Jackson the upper hand. And
I give him and James Wiseman both a ton of
credit that from the first training camp practice now and
then watching them in that preseason game, if you didn't
know they had torn har at chillies, you wouldn't know.
And that's a testament to you know, the medical staff
(01:58:13):
and also the hard work that those two guys have
put in in not even a full year, maybe ten
to you know, eleven months since that injury.
Speaker 1 (01:58:22):
And so it looks like it's Isaiah.
Speaker 2 (01:58:25):
Jackson maybe getting a little bit of the upper hand.
But I heard Rick Carlisle talking, i think with Zach
Lowe on his podcast in a really good conversation, but
he brought back, you know, one of those years in
Dallas where he had four centers and they all sort
of rotated and they all had a role. We don't
know how that fifteen spot will be and whether Tony
Bradley even is in the mix as well, but it
wouldn't shock me if you use all four of those
(01:58:47):
guys for all of their strengths, and it's a different
guy each and every night that maybe has the upper
hand or maybe is the one on the court in
the final five minutes.
Speaker 7 (01:58:57):
It's always tough to follow up a great year when
you have mitigating circumstances, it changes that one completely. Have
you kind of wrapped your mind yet around kind of
what you think this year is going to look like
or what I'm using the air quotes here, what's going
to make this a good year for this basketball team?
Trying to follow up just how damn close it was
(01:59:17):
to a championship last season.
Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
Yeah, it was tough preparing for me to day thinking,
you know, twelve times twelve years I've done this, and
you always have that similar storyline of you know, can
you you know, win the Eastern Conference, can you get
to the NBA Finals? Can you prove the doubters wrong? Well,
when you go to the NBA Finals, you figure there
should be no doubters the next season, but all here
(01:59:40):
you are again trying to prove people wrong. So it's
a familiar role where I don't think the outside expectations
are very high for this team. It's not that fair
for a group that has played as many playoff games
as anybody in the NBA over the last two seasons,
and has been to the Eastern Conference finals and been
to the finals. But it sort of fits this group
that no one is expecting that much from them. And
(02:00:02):
you go into the season where you've got a hard
early schedule, but you'll you'll have people remembering watching you
in the finals. But maybe still, you know, letting up
a little or taking the game for granted because you
don't have Tyre's Halliburn and you look a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (02:00:20):
Than you did.
Speaker 2 (02:00:21):
But I did enjoy watching even the Timberwolves broadcast last night.
And it will happen all season. All of these visiting
teams will all say, hey, we remember the Pacers, we
remember how hard they played. Will that same Pacers team
be able to take the court And I think I
think that's in their DNA, the way they played last season,
(02:00:41):
the way they got to the NBA Finals, just because
they don't have Tyre's Halliburton, I still think they can
kind of play that way. And then I can't wait
to see what we see on the court.
Speaker 1 (02:00:50):
Now.
Speaker 7 (02:00:50):
The final question, will there be a Pacers TV exclusive
the next time you go farming can we work this
into a pregame show somehow?
Speaker 1 (02:00:58):
JJ No, I think this is a radio exclusive. You know.
Speaker 2 (02:01:01):
I try to stay I try to stay in my lane.
I don't want to be too big of a part
of the broadcast.
Speaker 1 (02:01:07):
You got.
Speaker 2 (02:01:08):
You know, Chris and Quinn need to get all of
all of their flowers in their airtime. And obviously the
players are the big story. So I'll just tell the
story of the team and the players. We'll let us
We'll talk farming just on the radio now.
Speaker 7 (02:01:20):
So you got to remember I have a sales background too.
I see a core TEBA sponsorship waiting to happen at
some point in time on the broadcast. Thanks go ahead.
Speaker 2 (02:01:29):
The one thing that it does fit in is every
once in a while, I get asked to voice a
radio spot for the team. And one of the spots
that I've done on a regular basis is the Indiana
soybean Farm.
Speaker 1 (02:01:39):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (02:01:40):
I told Greg Gore, like I just got asked to
do a new soybean spot, and I really know what
I'm talking about. Now when I'm doing this thirty second
read about Indiana soybean farmer, so shout out to the
soybean farmers, all of the farmers, and I just love October.
It's a great time of the year and great talking
with you.
Speaker 7 (02:01:57):
Great it seems like we grow basketball. Here is appropriate
the time, my friend. We'll cross path soon.
Speaker 1 (02:02:03):
All right, thanks Greg, you got it.
Speaker 7 (02:02:04):
Jeremiah Johnson again kind of up to join us literally
from farm machinery. I didn't have time to ask JJ
the question because James is mad at me because we're
like late, and he's like, I have to deal with
this every day with John I didn't think'd be the
case with you. But here we are just blowing past
the proper break time. Show's about to end. But my
guess would be if JJ has something of a farm background,
(02:02:25):
he probably learned to drive the same way I did.
It's easy to, you know, pass your get your larnsment
when you're fifteen and you've been driving a tractor since
you were like eleven. That was kind of the way
of the world for me. Plus there was also a
car we would drive around a buddy of mine's trailer.
But that's a conversation for a different day. We'll come
back and wrap it up next. We'll update you on baseball.
There suddenly runs a plenty in both games that are
(02:02:47):
taking place, and we've got Race the Day. We'll do
that when we come back as well. Ninety three to
five and one oh seven five of the Fan, the
ride with JMV. You get nothing, you lose, Good day.
Speaker 5 (02:03:04):
Sir, ninety three to five and one oh seven five
the Fan.
Speaker 7 (02:03:10):
It's the closest thing we get to Michael Grady because
he went on the call last night, so we get
the old line from the pop quiz. By the way,
we began that break with Race of the Day. Our
winner is Jason Moyerts. The winning horse was odds on Antiquity.
Clearly odds on Antiquity was a bit of a favorite
(02:03:31):
because you get three bucks on a two dollars bet,
A two dollars exacted Nate gets you five bucks. A
fifty cent trifecta get you a whopping six' eighty. Five, Thankfully,
jason you won more than. That you win fifty dollars
in betting and dining At Harrah's hoo's your, park racing and.
CASINO i was so taken aback BY jj being a,
(02:03:51):
FARMER i had no chance to ask him about his other.
Passion he has become quite the horse racing officionado and.

Is James. Adams, james what do you?
Speaker 9 (02:04:26):
Have an unnamed? Listener kind of bringing it back to
something we were talking about earlier in the, Show when
does The Daniel jones extension talk truly ramp?
Speaker 7 (02:04:36):
Up it's a good, question AND i think it's almost
like market dependent in other, words AND i was we
were having some of this conversation behind the scenes in
terms of what you can do and what you can't,
do and how it affects this year's Cap in other,
words you if this keeps going the way that it,
(02:04:57):
is you don't want him to get to the open.
Market at the end of the. Day you could franchise tag,
him but a franchise tag for a quarterback gets you
into the forty million dollar range pretty, quickly and his
market value is going to be. Significant but maybe if
(02:05:20):
you do a deal, now you could lessen that a little.
Bit AND i want to make Sure i'm giving proper
credit because this is all the usual cultureporters that all
kind of gathered together before we hear From shanstike can
go back in the locker, room go back to, practice et.
Cetera so, like And James boyd can talk about this
on The Morning show, tomorrow you, know on the guys
(02:05:41):
that are kind of on second or third contracts or
on second or third, team As Daniel jones, is that
market is probably somewhere in the mid thirty million dollar
range over the course of anywhere from two to three
to four, years whatever the case may.
Speaker 1 (02:05:59):
Be so.
Speaker 7 (02:06:02):
It's something That Daniel jones won't talk, about something of
The colts talk about. PUBLICLY i think they'd like to
get it. Done and the good news is for The,
colts it's good news bad. News as it relates To Daniel,
jones it's good news because you had set this team
up to basically have an out or kind of a reset.
(02:06:24):
Button this year or. Next there's a lot of guys
on the last year of their contract this year or
are signed to a one year deal this, year because
you knew you had to get to that. Point If
Anthony richardson, hit you had kind of tied your team's
(02:06:45):
window to the end of his rookie status of his,
contract which would be next. Year given the Way Daniel
jones is, playing you obviously want to keep him. Around
So i'm sure it's going to be a story off
and on the rest of the. Year it's a story
as long as he is playing out standing football as
(02:07:06):
he is. Now but The colts do really hold all
the cards in the deck because, again at the end
of the, day they can franchise tag, him and again
they don't want to because they'll pay more for one
year than they would over the course of a three
or four year deal and it takes a, bigger you,
know chunk out of the. Cap but they are still
(02:07:28):
in the spot of having the leverage as we. Speak all, Right, No,
on we got a couple couple minutes left to go
before we have to exit stage. Left updating you In detroit,
again certainly appears The tigers is going to force a game.
Five that game is going is in the bottom of the.

Again maren's in the series two One marin has led

against The cups two games to. None cubs had a
heck of a first inning At Wrigley field after The
brewers got on board first with an early run lead
off home run by The cubs first basement in. Bush
(02:08:12):
they end up batting around in the bottom of the
first inning and The cubs have a four to one
lead on The. Brewers that game is now going to
the top of the. SECOND i feel like, saying to
be the, man you gotta beat the. Man BUT i
