The Heroes Red and Blue 5K Will Caviness Memorial Road Race on Sept. 29 in Greensboro will be held in memory of the late Greensboro Fire Department captain. The event will honor firefighters, police officers and public safety heroes with proceeds going to the International Association Fire Fighters to support the International Burn Camp. Will Caviness was raising funds for the association's Burn Foundation at the 2011 Chicago Marathon when he collapsed near the end of the race and later died. Will's brother, Sean, a runner and Greensboro Fire Department captain, and Rick O'Reilly, representing Junction 311 Endurance Sports, join me for this new episode of The Running Shorts Show. We discuss: 0:58: Details and background about the race. 5:17: Sean's role in the Fire Department. 7:27: How Will followed his older brother into first-responder service. 9:11: What growing up was like for the brothers. 10:40: Will, the runner. 13:21: What blocked Will's attempt before Chicago to qualify for the Boston Marathon. 15:03: Fundraising for the Burn Foundation. 16:42: The "why?" that hasn't been answered and how Sean has coped with losing a brother. 18:32: The close ties between the brothers' families. 19:55: What you need to remember about Will Caviness.
