Speaker 1 (00:01):
Have you ever
wondered how to hear God's voice
in the middle of what seemslike a really busy and sometimes
noisy world?
Or maybe you're even strugglingwith the idea that God would
speak to you at all, or does Godspeak at all, much less to you,
right?
Well, listen, he does.
He wants to speak to you.
He speaks to us in a variety ofdifferent ways, and I'm going
to jump into all of those waystoday and give you some
(00:22):
practical steps on how you canstart learning to hear God's
voice today.
On the Thriving Christian Artist.
All over the world, artists areawakening painters and potters,
writers and weavers, poets anddancers not chasing followers or
fame, but sons and daughterscalled for such a time as this,
transformed from the inside out, creating with purpose,
releasing the glory of God andliving in the power of the
(00:45):
kingdom.
Right now, this is the ThrivingChristian Artist.
Well, hey, my friend, it's MattTommy, super glad that you are
here again with me.
Make sure that you hit thesubscribe button and make sure
you check out all the greatresources that we've got for
growing artists right here inthe description and the show
notes, so that you can find outabout the Thriving Christian
Artists Weekly newsletter, whichis absolutely free, got a ton
(01:08):
of great resources that comesout every Wednesday.
Also our foundations course, our artist mentoring program, as
well as lots and lots of otherresources, books and devotionals
and all the stuff that can helpyou in your walk with the Lord
and also in developingeverything that he's got for you
as an artist in his kingdom.
You know, when I look at mylife and all these years I've
(01:29):
been walking with the Lord andnot only mentoring artists but
being an artist myself I reallycan't imagine not leaning on the
voice of the Lord through allthose years.
And yet I know for a lot ofpeople, depending on the stream
of the body of Christ thatyou've come out of, or maybe
different issues that you'vewalked through in your life.
You may be sitting there todaygoing gosh.
(01:50):
I'd really love to believe thatI could hear God's voice, but
that's just not been myexperience.
Or maybe you think that that'sjust kind of, you know, just for
super spiritual people, but Iwant to let you know it is not
just for super spiritual people,in fact.
John 10, 27, this is Jesustalking and he says this my
sheep, that's us, that's me, andyou right, my sheep hear my
(02:11):
voice and I know them and theyfollow me.
So, in other words, hearingGod's voice is based number one
in our relationship with theLord.
He sees you, he knows exactlywhere you are and he speaks and
he says my kids, my sheep rightmy sons and daughters, they know
(02:32):
my voice.
In other words, I want you tobegin to reorient your mind
right To the fact that God isspeaking, he wants to speak and
that hearing his voice Listenthis is so important wants to
speak, and that hearing hisvoice listen this is so
important, hearing his voice isa normal part of your walk with
him as a son and as a daughterin the kingdom.
That's really really huge, because one of the things that
(02:54):
the enemy is always trying to doin our life, no matter what the
issue is right, we know this isto come to steal and to kill
and destroy.
In other words, he wants tosteal the truth that God even
wants to speak to you.
He wants to kill and destroy.
In other words, he wants tosteal the truth that God even
wants to speak to you.
He wants to kill your abilityto hear God's voice by keeping
you busy or keeping you inunbelief, or he wants to destroy
the gift of being able to hearGod's voice in your life through
(03:17):
lots and lots of different ways, through woundedness and trauma
and busyness and all the stuff, right, confusion.
But God's not giving us aspirit of fear, he's giving us a
power of sound mind, right Apower, and of love, a sound mind
.
That's our inheritance in theLord, that is normal Christian
living.
And so I just want you to beginto think right now, even as
(03:39):
we're getting started, with thisidea of practical steps to
hearing God's voice.
Wow, this idea of practicalsteps to hearing God's voice.
Wow, how would my voice beginto change, what's coming out of
my mouth, if I could begin tohear his voice in my ear?
In other words, how would thethings that are coming out of my
mouth change if I knew that hisvoice was coming into my ear?
See, friend, the Bible saysthat the power of life and death
(04:02):
is where, in the tongue.
But do you know where thingscome out of the tongue?
Where they start?
They start in the heart.
That's why the Bible says thatfaith comes by what Hearing and
hearing?
By the word of God, not justthe written word of God, but
also the word of God, that theHoly Spirit is speaking to us
Now.
Listen, this is super importantas we're getting started today.
(04:25):
Nothing that you would everfeel like God is speaking to you
would ever go against anythingthat's in God's word.
In fact, I love to reverseengineer that and say you can
use the word of God and thenature of God as it's revealed
through his word.
You can use that as a tried andtrue, 100% of the time right
(04:47):
filter for you to begin todetermine in your life whether
you're hearing from the Lord.
Listen, I know a lot ofwell-meaning.
I'll say maybe that's agrace-filled way to say it, but
a lot of well-meaningdenominations out there would
rather teach people not tobelieve to hear God's voice,
that God doesn't speak, andthey'd want to teach that the
(05:10):
only way that he speaks isthrough his word.
And listen.
God's word is a primary waythat he speaks.
Nothing that you feel insideyour spirit, inside your
imagination, things that you see, things that you sense, things
that you feel, things you know, situations coming together in
your life None of that is ever, ever, ever going to contradict
(05:32):
the Word of God.
But, my friend, the Word of Godis full of lots and lots and
lots of different ways that Godspeaks right Through His audible
voice, through people'simagination, through seeing
circumstances come together andjust beginning to realize that,
hey, god's trying to get myattention, through prophetic
words from people with propheticgiftings, or just friends that
(05:55):
want to encourage us in the Lord.
Maybe they're praying one dayand God just begins to speak to
them.
All of these ways, right, aredifferent ways that we can hear
the Lord, but we hear all ofthose things and we receive all
those things through the filter, through the lens of his written
word, which is the Bible.
That is super, super importantfor you to understand.
(06:19):
So don't for one second believethat, well, god doesn't speak
anymore like he did in the Bible.
Of course he does.
The Bible says that God is thesame yesterday, today and
forever.
In other words, if he waswalking in the cool of the day
and speaking to Adam and Eve, ifhe spoke to Moses, if he spoke
to David, if he spoke to Isaiahand Jeremiah and if he spoke to
the disciples, and if the Fatherspoke to Jesus and if the Holy
(06:43):
Spirit spoke to the apostles, come on, the same Holy Spirit
wants to speak to you today.
Jesus knows you, he knows you.
He knows right where you are, exactly what you need.
And his desire listen is thatyou be able and willing and
desirous of tuning into hisvoice so that you can be led by
(07:05):
his voice.
That's really, really important.
Listen, life in the kingdom, especially for us artists.
As intuitive beings, we'redesigned to be led by this
beautiful intuitive process oflearning to sense God's presence
, learning to sense the thingsthat he's saying and the things
that he's showing us in thecontext of what we know about
(07:28):
God, in the context of his word.
And so I just want to encourageyou today, as we get started
with this don't be afraid ofhearing God's voice just because
maybe you grew up in adenomination or a well-meaning
church that taught you that thatwas not the truth.
I just want to say that is notthe truth.
Jesus loves you, the HolySpirit.
(07:49):
If you've come to know Jesus asyour Savior, the Holy Spirit is
living inside you, active andready and willing to speak.
In fact, I love to say this theHoly Spirit is always speaking.
The question is not will hespeak or is he speaking?
The question is am I listening?
Am I tuning my heart, am Ituning my ears to be able to
(08:10):
hear and sense what God issaying to me.
So that's what I want to jumpin today, real, practically, in
this time that we have together,in order to really give you
some practical steps to do that.
All right.
So I think all of us can say, nomatter where you are in your
art journey or in just in yourlife journey, life is busy,
right, there's a lot of stuff, and I think one of the big
(08:33):
barriers to us often hearingGod's voice clearly can be just
the busyness of life.
The enemy loves to keep usdistracted, right?
And so I just want you to knowthat learning to hear God's
voice and I like to talk aboutit as cultivating his voice,
cultivating an ear to the spiritand eye to the things that he's
(08:54):
doing it's going to take yourintentionality.
It's going to take you sayingyou know what this is important.
I'm going to begin to listenfor, I'm going to begin to look
for the movement and theleadership of God in my life.
Why?
Because I know it's God's idea.
Listen, let's just put to bedthis idea that wanting to hear
God's voice is somehow selfish.
(09:15):
It's absolutely not selfish.
It's God's idea.
If he didn't want to speak toyou, friend, he wouldn't speak
to you, right?
If he didn't want to speak toyou, he wouldn't have been
showing us the model of himspeaking to people all through
the Word, right?
So this is again, this isnormal Christianity.
And when we learn to hear God'svoice and interpret how he
(09:37):
speaks and when he speaks to usand again, I think we all hear
God a little differently, basedon how we're wired and how we're
designed.
We all sense and see and feeland interpret things a little
differently.
But here's the one thing that'salways true when you begin to
hear God's voice and you beginto get a confidence that God is
leading you in a certaindirection, you know what happens
(09:58):
.
Peace begins to happen, confidence begins to happen.
In other words, you're notworried all by yourself.
Oh no, I've got to deal withthis situation myself and I
don't know what I'm going to do.
And I'm just so frustrated.
What if I mess up?
What if I miss God?
No, jesus said what Come to me,come to me All you who are
heavy laden, and what I'll giveyou rest.
(10:19):
Take my yoke upon you.
My yoke is easy, my burden'slight Again, if you'll bring the
stuff of life to him and rollthat over to him and begin to
trust him with that and begin tolisten to his voice.
In the middle of that, guesswhat's going to happen?
You're going to get peace.
Not only are you going to getpeace, you're going to get
confidence.
Why?
Because you know that you'renot walking by yourself.
(10:41):
I can't tell you the confidencethat comes with learning to hear
the voice of the Lord.
When you know that, you knowthat, you know that God has
spoken, that God is working allthings together for your good,
not only do you see it in HisWord as a promise, but you know
it down deep and in your spiritand you can begin to see the
situations of life.
(11:02):
You begin to see that's notjust a coincidence, that's a God
moment.
What do people call them?
God winks, right.
This is a God moment.
I see him confirming, I see himleading, I see him bringing
that person to encourage mealong the way or open the door.
Listen, when you begin to putall these puzzle pieces together
and that's kind of what it'slike, right, hearing God's voice
(11:25):
is kind of like putting allthese pieces together.
There's a confidence thatbegins to come and there's a
clear direction.
And listen, hearing God's voicedoesn't always mean that you can
see 10 years down the road.
It may mean that you know thenext step, or it may mean that
you just have enough faith andconfidence to keep going, even
when you don't know the nextstep, because you've learned
(11:45):
that when you walk with the Lord, he's faithful to his word,
that he will lead and guide anddirect you in everything that
he's doing.
That's huge and, you know, Ijust find that, leaning in again
to God's idea of me being ledby the spirit, led by his word,
hearing His voice, following Hislead, there is no greater way
(12:07):
in your life to begin to developand cultivate a deep intimacy
with the Lord.
So not only is this helping youright, not only is this helping
you practically, it isdeveloping a deep, deep, deep
connection with the Lord, andit's one of the ways, I think,
that we learned to just buildour deeper relationship with him
.
Now, I love this verse.
(12:29):
You may have heard this beforePsalm 4610, lots of different
versions of this out there, depending on the translation
that you love, but I love thisone that says be still and know
that I am God.
Now, remember a minute ago Isaid that learning to hear God's
voice takes intentionality onyour part.
I think sometimes we just wantGod to come bang us on the head.
(12:51):
I mean, granted, wouldn't thatbe nice if we could just say God
, if you need to say somethingto me, just send down the golden
scroll right, hit me on the topof the head like send a big
sign, or something like that.
But God doesn't always do thatright.
He speaks to us many times inthe still small moments that
we're choosing to be with Him,that we're choosing to kind of
(13:12):
lean our ear toward Him.
We talk a lot about this andgive a lot of practical
exercises in the context of ourart in our Foundations course,
because I learned that for me,and one of the ways I've seen
with a lot of artists, one ofthe ways that we hear God best
as creatives is not just sittingaround in Bible study, which is
(13:32):
a wonderful thing you should bedoing, right but we often hear
God best in the context of ourdesign and for us as artists.
Guess what that means?
That I probably hear God andhave the capacity to hear God
best when I'm doing the thingthat he created me to do.
How many of you maybe you'vebeen in the studio one day.
You've been painting orcreating or weaving, or
(13:55):
stitching, or throwing potteryor writing music or journaling
or whatever it is that you do,and all of a sudden, in this,
this place of of flow and of joyand of connection with him, all
of a sudden, in this place offlow and of joy and of
connection with him, all of asudden, you just begin to say,
wow, I sense that God's leadingme.
Wow, that scripture is jumpingoff the page.
And that's the same thing thatI felt, like he told me
yesterday.
Or, wow, I've had two friendssay that to me in the last two
(14:19):
weeks.
Maybe God is trying to speaksomething to me.
Right, I just find when we willtune our ear to the Lord, both
in our creative process and inintentional times with him, we
begin to hear him and see himmore clearly.
Again, this is God's idea.
He's the one that's wanting tospeak to you.
(14:41):
He's inviting you into thistime.
And so part of what we do andpart of the things I do, you can
look behind me.
You see my comfy chair backthere.
That's not just a prop, that'sactually my comfy chair where I
sit and hear the Lord a lot.
I've got one here in my studio,I've got one in the house where
I sit and drink my coffee.
(15:01):
Every morning.
I make time to offer up to theLord the things that are going
on in my life, to read His Word,to listen for His voice and to
begin to just quiet my mind andsay Holy Spirit, would you lead
me, would you direct me?
I find a lot of times that justthe real practical things of
deep breathing, of closing myeyes, of just kind of getting in
(15:24):
a really relaxed spot with theLord, and again, all of that
just conveys trust.
Right, I'm not in a hurry, I'mnot in a rush, I'm not
frustrated about this.
Lord.
I know that you're right herein this moment with me and God.
I just lay everything down, Ijust I breathe in faith, I
breathe in your presence and Ibreathe out, lord, all of the
(15:47):
stress and all the anxiety thatthe enemy's trying to throw on
me in this time, and I began tojust worship him with my focus.
You say worship him with yourfocus.
Yeah, did you know that turningoff your phone could be an act
of worship?
Did you know that turning offthe TV, the, the, not scrolling
Facebook or Instagram or orwhatever it might worship.
Did you know that turning offthe TV, not scrolling Facebook
or Instagram or whatever itmight be, did you know that that
(16:09):
can actually be an act ofworship?
Why?
Because you're choosing Jesusover the things of this world
that so easily entangle us.
Remember when Jesus I love thatparable that he talks about the
parable of the sower and thedifferent ground right, and he
talks about the hard ground andthe thorny ground and the rocky
(16:31):
ground and all the differentstuff.
You know, thorny ground, manytheologians say, are the thorny
things of life, the things thatjust kind of creep up on us.
And when you choose to getthose thorny things out of your
life, when you choose to say youknow what, instead of picking
up my phone first thing in themorning, instead of looking at
(16:52):
my email, instead of looking atTV and putting on the news first
thing in the morning, I'm goingto choose to offer my time and
my focus as an act of worship tothe Lord.
I'm going to choose to let himbe the first thing that I listen
for and look for.
What does that do?
That listen that begins to setthe stage for your whole day and
(17:14):
it just kind of I just thinkfor me and I hope this makes
sense for you it just kind ofraises the flag, right, is you
know in, in, in, like I thinkabout in England, you know when,
the when, the Queen of England, you know, when she was alive.
I've grown up seeing, seeingthe Queen my whole life before
she passed away and you know, just on TV and all that, and I
loved it, like when she, anycastle that she was at, they'd
(17:35):
raise the flag right and theywould know that she's there.
I just kind of love the ideathat I can raise the flag of my
heart and just kind of let theLord know hey, I'm here, I'm in
residence.
In other words, I'm ready tohear your voice, I'm ready to
spend time with you, I'm readyto focus my attention on you.
(17:58):
The next thing I would say aboutyou know just kind of some
practical ways to hear his voiceis really out of Proverbs 4.23.
I love this.
It says guard your heart aboveall else, and that's some pretty
strong words.
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course
of your life.
You may have heard it in a moretraditional version.
(18:19):
For you know, guard your heart, for out of it flows the issues
of life.
You know, when the Bible talksabout your heart it's kind of
talking about this seat of allwisdom and knowing that's inside
of us.
I think about it as thesubconscious framework I teach a
lot about in Foundations and myGod's Plan for Living book and
all of my books about this innerframework of your heart that
(18:42):
God has knit together and wehave a part in choosing how that
gets to be developed and formed.
Now, of course, the enemy wantsto form the inner framework of
your heart through woundednessand trauma and lies and anxiety
and fear and all that stuff.
And guess what?
The inner framework of yourheart through woundedness and
trauma and lies and anxiety andfear and all that stuff, and
guess what?
The inner framework of yourheart is not really a respecter
(19:04):
of what's getting put into it,right?
If you put junk in, you'regoing to get junk out.
If you put the kingdom in, youput God's word in, guess what's
going to happen?
You're going to get the kingdomout.
You're going to get a lensthat's based in the word of God.
You're going to get a lensthat's based in the kingdom of
God.
In that perspective, and so Ithink part of learning to hear
(19:25):
God's voice is developing anintentional, listening heart.
Why?
Because I want to guard myheart.
That is, I want to be reallyreally careful, not in a
fear-based way, but just in anintentional way.
I want to be really reallycareful, not in a fear-based way
, but just in an intentional way.
I want to be careful andintentional about the things
that I'm allowing to be sowninto the garden of my heart.
(19:46):
If you think about your heartlike the way Jesus taught about
it, as ground, we realize thatwhen a seed goes in, whatever
kind of seed that is, it's goingto bring forth fruit.
Why?
Because your heart is designedas an incubator.
It's designed as a seed bed.
Right, the Bible even talksabout your imagination and,
again, part of this innerreality that God's given us,
(20:10):
even as a womb, even as a placewhere we form things like a
potter, and so this innerframework of our heart, where
our imagination is, where oursubconscious is, it's important
that we guard that and we curatemaybe is a great word.
We curate that like a museumcurator would curate a show.
(20:30):
We curate the ground of ourheart.
Why?
Because the Bible says out ofit flows, the issues of life or
out of it, you know, determinesthe course of your life.
So let's again reverse engineerthat.
If you don't guard your heart,if you're not intentional about
learning to train your heart andtrain your imagination, and
(20:53):
train your spirit man to to hearGod's voice and to be trained
by his word, guess what?
The course of your life, theissues of your life, are going
to be led and determined bythings that you do not want them
to be led and determined by.
In fact, friend, and again I'mgoing to say this and I don't
want it at all to come across assomething that leads you into
(21:15):
shame, because you know, goddoesn't speak through shame, he
speaks through faith, he speaksthrough love, he speaks through
invitation, right in his word.
But one of the ways that youcan know what's going on in your
heart is to look at the fruitof your life, because everything
on the external starts where Onthe internal.
(21:35):
And so if the issues of yourlife that is the way that your
life is going right now, thethings that you're always
struggling with, the things thatyou keep coming up against in
your life, the struggles thatyou just can't shake, if those
are the things that aredetermining the issues of your
life.
You're like man I'm just alwaysseeing these things, I'm always
(21:55):
running into trouble.
I can never seem to getbreakthrough All of this.
I would, I would ask you tojust take some time with the
Lord and say Lord, what's goingon with my heart?
That is, what have I allowed tobe sown in my heart?
Because when you just let anyold thing get sown in your heart
, guess what?
Any old thing is going to startsprouting and start bringing
(22:16):
forth fruit in your life.
And listen, that is one of themost woo.
Listen, this is one of the mostempowering things you can ever
get in the kingdom.
And a lot of religion.
You know, well-meaningreligious people don't teach
this.
You can, absolutely.
You have the power throughChrist, through the power of the
Holy Spirit.
You have the power to cooperatewith him, to co-labor with him,
(22:38):
to absolutely change your life,to change the output and the
outflow and the experience ofyour life.
Not by striving more, not bytrying more, not by trying to do
it yourself.
No, by learning to what.
Hear his voice, know thepromises that are in his word,
sow them into your heart, comeout of agreement with the lies
(23:00):
of the enemy and into agreementwith the truth of God's word.
Listen, I could talk a lotabout that.
In fact, if you want to findout more about that process in
general, in my God's plan forliving book I teach a process
called the five R's.
I think I talk about that inUnlocking the Heart of the
Artist.
We go deep into that in theFoundations course.
But it's just this process thatI teach, right of taking every
(23:23):
thought captive, learning toidentify it as a truth or the
lie, coming out of agreementwith it if it's the lie,
replacing it with the truth ofGod's Word, and then just some
practical things to begin torejoice and reinforce the truth
of God's Word in your life.
But listen, all of that, all ofthat takes a listening heart, a
(23:43):
heart that is pointed towardJesus, that is pointed toward
desiring to hear his voice.
And if you hear, if you don'thear anything else, hear this.
Hearing God's voice requiresyour participation, it requires
your intentionality and itacquires reproaching life
through a kingdom lens, aspiritual lens, right Even you
(24:06):
know, when you're in the studioand you're thinking well, was
that nudge me or was that theLord?
You know, was that color idea?
Was that me or was that theLord?
Listen, I've just learned thatwhen I come in the studio, I'm
already kind of in a heightenedstate of awareness because
that's what God has created idea.
Was that me or was that theLord?
Listen, I've just learned thatwhen I come in the studio, I'm
already kind of in a heightenedstate of awareness because
that's what God's created me todo.
But I just invite the HolySpirit.
(24:26):
Holy Spirit, thank you.
In fact, if you were to gooutside my studio right now and
look over the door, there's abig old yield sign, like a
traffic yield sign, and everyday when I walk in, I'm just
reminded.
This is not about me, this isGod's story.
God, I'm yielding my ears andmy eyes and my hands and my
heart to you today.
(24:46):
Speak to me, lord, and I liketo call it this way.
I assume connection what?
No, matt, isn't that kind ofpresumptuous.
No, the Holy Spirit is livinginside of me and living inside
of you.
Jesus already said my sheepknow my voice, right, I know
them, and they hear my voice andthey follow me.
(25:07):
Again, this is his idea, it'snormal, and so I just want you
to begin to assume that, asyou're being led in the studios,
you're entreating his presenceas you're in the word, as you're
declaring his truth out of yourmouth.
Just begin to as a normal partof your day.
Lord, thank you that you'releading me and guiding me today
in my creative process, in thebusiness decisions that I make,
(25:31):
in the things that I'm doingwith my family and in
relationships, all right, andI've just found, the more that
you do, that sensitivity to thevoice of the Holy spirit grows
as you intentionally practiceand pursue his presence.
That's just.
That's just one of those things.
The more you do it, the betterthat you're going to get.
(25:52):
And here's, here's the coolthing.
Even if you're like, I thinkthis is Lord, but I'm not quite
sure, step out.
Even if you're like I thinkthis is the Lord, but I'm not
quite sure, Step out, step out.
You know why?
Because God is full of graceand mercy and he loves to direct
our steps.
You know what I think thatassumes.
That assumes that as you walk, sometimes you're not going to
get it exactly right.
(26:12):
Sometimes we're going to stepoff the path.
Sometimes we're going to thinkhe said this, but he actually
meant that.
But you know what?
God didn't come and just hit usover the head, like religion
teaches Don't miss God.
You miss God.
You're in the flesh, you'regoing to go, blah, blah, blah,
blah, all this kind of stuff.
No, he's a loving father, theHoly Spirit, jesus said.
Jesus said it's better that Igo.
Why?
So the helper will come.
(26:33):
The Holy Spirit's a helper.
In other words, he wants tohelp you in the times you get it
.
He wants to help you in thetimes you miss it.
He wants to help you in thetimes that you're not sure he's
the helper.
So don't ever allow the enemyto come in and put fear and
shame in your life.
In regards to hearing God'svoice, the biggest thing is you
(26:54):
just begin to read his word.
So is his word in your heart?
Begin to cultivate his presencein a listening ear, begin
walking, begin looking for himand as you do, you will begin to
gain confidence.
You know why?
Because you're going to seethings start happening in your
life.
In other words, you're going totake a step and you're going to
(27:14):
go.
Whoa, I didn't think that waspossible.
I didn't think breakthroughlike that was possible.
I didn't think that idea thatGod gave me in the studio was
even something that anybodycould do.
But I did it and wow, look atthe results and what does that
do?
That gives you faith.
That begins to give you faith.
Now, one of the big things Ithink that a lot of people
(27:36):
struggle with in regards tohearing God's voice is again
this whole kind of nervousnessaround.
Well, how do I know it's Godand how do I know it's me, and
how do I know this is not theenemy, or distractions and that
sort of thing.
So again I just want toreinforce God's voice always
aligns with scripture.
It never sounds like shame andfear and control and all of that
(27:57):
kind of mess.
It always is an invitation to adeeper relationship with him.
It's always an invitation todive deeper into his nature,
into his principles that we seein his word.
It's always loving, it's alwaystruthful, it's always peace
giving.
Even when the Lord is trying tobring you maybe up in an area
where you need some correction, that never comes as fear or
(28:21):
shame based.
It always comes as a lovinginvitation wanting to draw you
into more.
So one of the ways that I'velearned to do this over the
years and again this is justthrough a lot of great Bible
teaching over the years, a lotof great mentors in my life and
then just seeing this work overthe last 20 years in my own life
.
I love to journal.
I'm a big journaler.
(28:42):
In fact I've got a big myprayer journals in the house.
Uh, I get a.
It's one of the little things, bougie things I do for myself.
Every year I get a brand newhandmade journal, um, from this
lady on Etsy.
I actually maybe I should putthe link in here.
I could do that, but she's agreat book binder and I just
love getting a new, fresh one,you know, every year.
(29:03):
But as you're hearing thingsfrom the Lord, as you're, you
know, I write my prayers.
I write down things that Isense, maybe things that I'm
praying about, things that Ifeel like the Lord's showing me,
things that may seem like, hmm, this is the second or third
time, or maybe I'm reallyfeeling this strongly, or, wow,
I've gotten two or threeprophetic words about this Lord.
(29:23):
I'm going to write these down.
I just find that writing thingsdown you know Habakkuk says
what Write the vision down, makeit plain why, so the runner can
run with it.
It's hard for you to run withthings in the Lord, that is
pursue things that he shows youif you don't write them down?
Right, if you're just kind ofletting them go one in and out
(29:45):
the other and expect God to justfloat down everything you need
in every situation automatically, without your participation.
That isn't how the kingdomworks, right.
God requires and expects andinvites our participation.
That is how the kingdom works, right.
God requires and expects andinvites our participation.
This co-laboring and I just find, in a real, practical way,
journaling, is one of those waysthat I do it.
Now I can hear you now oh,what's the right way, the wrong
(30:06):
way?
There's no right way, there'sno wrong way.
Sometimes I sketch in my prayerjournal, sometimes I pray in my
sketch journal, sometimes I'mwriting things down on a note
and I put sticky notes inside myjournal.
Whatever it takes for you, Iwould just say the big thing is
just write those things down, even when, even when you think
you may not understand thefullness of it, but you just
kind of feel that nudge, writeit down and just say, lord, I'm
(30:31):
writing this down, I don't havethe full understanding.
God, I pray that you'd confirmit through your word, confirm it
, you know.
Confirm it through situations, you know through relationships
that I have, whatever it isright, but it allows you to keep
going back to things that youbelieve the Lord's speaking
about and listen when it comesto pass, or he begins to give
(30:52):
you a little direction in thisway or that way.
That builds such faith in you.
Why?
Because you know that thethings that you're hearing, the
things that you're sensing, arefrom him, and that's how faith
gets built in your life.
Faith comes by hearing, andhearing by the word of God.
Again, not only hearing hiswritten word, but hearing his
voice inside your heart.
(31:14):
That's how faith and confidence, if you, will get developed.
Now the last thing I would sayis, just once you feel like God
is speaking, you got to learn towalk in alignment with what
he's showing you.
And sometimes I'm going to behonest sometimes the things that
God speaks to you, you're likewhoa, that's a lot bigger than
me.
In fact, I think one of thehallmarks of especially with
(31:38):
vision is understanding that Godloves to give big vision.
That is impossible for you.
Why so that it's impossible foryou?
Because God wants you to beinvolved in this supernatural
process of seeing and agreeing.
Seeing and hearing and sensingwhat he's doing, agreeing with
it in your heart, decreeing itout of your mouth and then
(32:00):
beginning to proceed.
That is walk toward that infaith.
And he knows that as you dothat, that's how supernatural
confidence and faith getdeveloped.
That's how you become faithfulwith little and made ruler over
much is because you're showingyourself faithful Again, not
striving, not running ahead ofthe Lord, but no, daily, moment
(32:22):
by moment, uh, starting to towalk with him.
And here, here's the beautifulthing.
Just like I said a minute ago,as you start doing this, in the
little things, writing thenudges down, writing those
little things that seem likecoincidences, writing those
things that are repeatingsituations or prophetic words or
thoughts, writing all thosedown and begin to act on them.
(32:44):
Listen when God sees, listen tome.
When God sees that he can trustyou with little things, he's
going to give you more and moreand more and more.
That's how the kingdom of Godworks.
That's how your creative voiceis going to grow.
That's how your business isgoing to grow.
That's how your life in theLord is going to grow.
(33:04):
That's how you're going to getbetter at operating in spiritual
gifts.
That's how you're going to getbetter at seeing God use you to
bring breakthrough in people'slives through your creativity.
Why is God going to entrust youwith this huge mountain, moving
demonstration of his nature whenhe can't even get you to
actually open your Bible andspend time with him on a regular
(33:25):
basis?
Right, the Bible says that Godis looking to and fro.
He's looking for those whosehearts are completely his.
How do you know if your heart'scompletely His?
Look at what your heart's beingfocused on.
Are you constantly beingdistracted?
Are you constantly allowing thecares of this world, the lies
(33:46):
of the enemy, all these thingsthat so easily entangle us?
Is your heart always focused onthose things, or is your heart
focused on cultivating a heartand an ear for the Lord?
Listen, when you begin to dothat listen, I'm just laughing
because I just know I've seen inmy own life when you begin to
(34:06):
do that, god will begin tomultiply and accelerate your
efforts in such a way that youwill surely say, as I have
there's no way that I'd be doingin my life or experiencing in
my life what I am unless it hadbeen the voice of the Lord.
That's how the kingdom getsmanifested in and through your
(34:27):
life.
So, my friend, I want tochallenge you this week, you
know.
Set aside 15, 20 minutes atleast once, but I would say a
day, you know.
Set aside 15, 20 minutes, uh,at least once, but I would say a
day, you know, every morning, instead of, if you're somebody
that loves to get up, get yourcoffee, flip on the news or get
up and check your phoneimmediately, I just want to
invite you, like, leave thephone in the bedroom, leave the
(34:48):
phone in the office, uh, don'tpick up the remote.
Use those early moments asyou're beginning to develop the
day and coming alive in themornings.
Use those to hear God's voiceand to say Lord, I'm here, I'm
coming faithful Lord, I'm comingto drink from your presence.
Lord, would you speak to metoday through your word.
(35:09):
Would you open my eyes and openmy ears that I could see and
listen?
The Bible says that when we ask,we will find.
The Bible says seek and you'llfind.
Knock and the door will be openunto you.
The Holy Spirit's the giver ofall wisdom, the giver of all
truth, he's the helper.
He wants to do this Again.
This is his idea.
(35:29):
So never, ever, feel bad orfeel somehow disqualified.
You know, I just believe theLord would say to you, some of
you right now that are evenfeeling that, well, I've tried
this before and maybe I'm doingit wrong, or I don't think God
is speaking to me, because this, that or the other or whatever,
listen, the enemy is alwaysgoing to try to sow doubt and
(35:50):
fear and feelings of anxiety andinadequacy in you and those in
your life.
And I can we just say right nowthat is not the truth of God's
word, that is not how God leadsyou, feelings of inadequacy and
fear.
That is not the Lord.
And the Bible says what Takeevery thought captive against
anything that exalts itselfagainst the knowledge of God and
do what Cast it down.
(36:11):
The Bible says what Resist thedevil and what he will flee.
You Cast it down.
The Bible says what Resist thedevil and what he will flee.
You don't have to go to thealtar for that to happen.
You don't have to get yourpreacher to lay hands on you.
You don't have to email for 10friends or call 50 people for
prayer support.
You can do that right now inthe strength and in the
authority that you have inJesus' name.
And I'm telling you when youbegin to do that, then begin to
(36:34):
journal what you're feeling fromthe Lord, begin to just ask the
Lord.
Lord, what do you want to sayto me today?
My ears are open, my eyes areopen as you just begin to
cultivate an awareness, Ipromise you, I promise you I
promise you, because God is nota man, that he would lie I
promise you you're going tobegin to hear God's voice.
So, my friend, as I pray today,I want you to just begin to ask
(36:56):
the Lord.
What is something that you needfor him to speak to?
You'd love for him to begin tospeak to you about, or what are
some things that you think thathe's been asking and been
leading you in that you're justnot quite sure about.
I want you to have that on yourmind.
I'm going to pray and we'rejust going to ask the Lord to
begin to speak in a new andfresh way to you right now.
(37:18):
Father, I thank you that, whenJesus went to sit at your right
hand, father, you sent the HolySpirit to be our comforter and
our guide and our truth giverand our wisdom leader.
Lord and God, I thank you thatthe Holy Spirit is not living
outside of us, but he's livingin us right now.
And, lord, the Holy Spirit.
(37:38):
You sent him to lead us and toguide us and to comfort us and
to bring wisdom to us in everysituation of our life.
And so, father, right now, Ijust pray for faith to arise in
people's hearts.
Lord, father, we ask you, holySpirit, we ask you would you
speak to us in a deeper way.
Holy Spirit, would you open oureyes and open our ears to the
(37:59):
way that you are speaking, theway that you want to lead us?
Holy Spirit, would youilluminate and magnify your word
inside of us?
God, let it jump off the page.
Let the situations of life jumpoff the page like a 3D movie.
God, would there be no doubtthat we're hearing your voice
and following your lead?
(38:19):
Father, I bind the enemy rightnow, in the name of Jesus, that
we want to come and steal andkill and destroy, to deceive and
confuse.
We bind you in the name ofJesus.
We resist the enemy and theBible says that you must flee.
And, god, I thank you.
I thank you that when you saythat, when we call out to you,
lord, you hear us and you'llanswer, and we thank you for
(38:42):
that.
God, thank you for your voice, thank you for your word.
Thank you for the inner witnessof the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for peace that passesall understanding, confirming
your ways in our life.
We thank you for all that inJesus name, amen.
Listen, my friend, I would lovefor you to let me know what the
Lord spoke to you during thatprayer.

what God's got for you and maybea lot of it's due to trauma or
woundedness or fear, just maybeno intentionality in your life,
