Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Thriving Christian Artist the
podcast, where we hope youconnect with God to bust through
the roadblocks that have heldyou back for years, create the
work you love and really livethe life you know.
God created you to live as anartist in His kingdom.
I'm Matt Tama, your host.
Let's get started.
Well, hey, my friend, it's Matt, so glad that you're with me

(00:25):
here on the podcast.
You know we do such incrediblethings in our Foundations course
community, inside of ourCreative Thrive Artist community
, one of which is doing liveQ&As all the time to make sure
that our students are actuallygetting the answers that they
need quickly to the things thatare holding them back.
And one of the things I'venoticed, especially in our
foundations courses, as peopleare coming in and wanting to

(00:48):
kind of realign their life witha kingdom foundation get rid of
the old as the old adage goesstinking thinking of the old
ways they've thought and renewtheir mind to the truth of God's
word and really create afoundation and habits to grow in
the Lord and in their artisticcalling.
One of the things that a lot ofpeople struggle with and it was

(01:09):
a question the other night wasMatt, how do I know that this
calling that I have as an artistis from the Lord.
And what about all thescriptures that talk about
laying your life down and don'ttrust what's in your heart, and
all this kind of stuff.
How do you reconcile that?
And I answered that prettyextensively for a student of my

(01:30):
name, janie, and I, just as Iwas listening to it again, I
thought you know what?
This would be a great podcastepisode and so, without further
ado, I want to just let you hearthe raw audio from the live Q&A
and I hope that this answerssome really clear, gives you
some really clear answers to aquestion that really, you know,
holds a lot of people back intheir artistic journey, and

(01:54):
hopefully this will begin togive you the confidence to
really step out in who God hascalled you to be, without all
this fear, shame and religiousmumbo jumbo, baggage that often
holds people back.
All right, so here is theanswer to that question.
Matt, you talk about the visionthat God gives us to be an
artist.
This is hard to truly receive, through the filter of a skewed

(02:20):
teaching that she feels likeshe's had in her life, of
Jesus's words when he says ifyou want to follow me, you must
deny yourself.
Take up your cross, follow me,lay down your life.
That's words.
When he says if you want tofollow me, you must deny
yourself.
Take up your cross, follow me.
Um, you know, lay down yourlife.
That that whole thing, and?
Um, so how do you reconcilethat?
Anybody else struggling with, like, how do you reconcile this?
Lay down your life, but goafter your dreams.
Like what is it?
Which is it man, which is it?
So?

(02:40):
I would say this the way.
I could talk for hours andhours of this.
So, deborah, I'm not going todo that.
I'm just like I'm not going todo this.
I'm just, I'm just going togive you a little bit.
The first thing I would say isthis the biggest revelation that
you can get in your life is adeep, visceral revelation of the

(03:04):
love of God and of yourposition as sons and daughters.
For me, that is foundationaland it creates the lens through
which you see everything.
Because when you encounter thelove of God and you understand
that you've been adopted, you'vebeen reconciled, redeemed and

(03:25):
restored into the fullness ofGod, and you understand that
you've been adopted, you've beenreconciled, redeemed and
restored into the fullness ofthe kingdom, that you are seated
with Christ in heavenly places, that you're a citizen of heaven
, that you're God's son, god'sdaughter, you're a child of God
with rights and responsibilities, benefits and blessings.
That changes everything.
Rights and responsibilities,benefits and blessings.
That changes everything.
There's nothing that you can doto change the love of God over

(03:49):
your life.
Whoa, that's a big, big changeand it creates a lens through
which you see the world.
And so the things that I'msaying, I'm saying from that
place, because I believe fromthat place, that perspective,

(04:09):
that when Jesus is talking aboutdenying ourselves and calling
us to surrender our life to himand take up our cross and all
that, I believe the heart ofthat, the spirit of that, is I
want you to lay down yourself-centered desires, I want
you to lay down your way ofwanting to do it, your prideful
ways of doing it, and I want youto take up mine.
Well, first of all, I would saythat happened when you got

(04:31):
saved and, second of all, that'sa daily choice that we're
making as we ask the Holy Spiritto form us and make us into the
image of Christ.
Right, that's whatsanctification is about.
Right, every day, dailydecisions to die to myself, to
take up my cross and follow him.
But that does not.

(04:51):
It's more about, I believe, putting the will of God in the
kingdom of God first.
But listen, all of that happensthrough your unique design.
Does that make sense?
I hope that makes sense whenthe kingdom of God works in you

(05:13):
and then works through you.
The kingdom of God ismanifesting itself through you,
through your uniqueness.
Again, if God moves throughDeborah or Irene or Mike or
Sherilyn or Karen or me, it'sgoing to be expressed
differently.
Same heart, same will of God,same word of God, same promises

(05:37):
of God, but it gets expressedbecause we're all made and wired
differently.
Does that make sense toeverybody?
I think here's a big thing thatreligiosity will tell you.
Religiosity will tell you thatGod's after man.
He wants clones.
There's a lot of churches thatwant to produce clones.
They don't want you to be whoyou are.

(05:59):
They want you to be a Christianlike they are.
And so they say to do that, yougot to dress like this, talk
like this, act like this, not dothis.
They've got the.
Anybody ever been to thosechurches you got the religious
list of.
If you want to be one of us,you got to be well.
That's the antithesis.
That's the antithesis of thenature of God and creativity,

(06:22):
right, right.
So God is endless in how hewants to express himself and
that is reflected in how he hasmade us.
And so I just think that, youknow, it's really, really,
really important to understandthat when Jesus is saying, lay
down your life, you know, followme.

(06:44):
He's saying, hey, I wanteverything that I have for you.
I want all of my nature and mylight and my life and my
transforming power.
I want it to fully come throughthe you that I created you to
be before the very foundation ofthe earth.
I want the full you, the fullpackage, redeemed and restored,

(07:05):
to shine and to be bright and tobe the person that I called you
to be, because when you do that, you make room for the glory of
God to be made manifest in yourlife.
Whoa, I'm going to have to takean offering.
I mean, this is good.
No, I'm just kidding, but thisis really good news, right?

(07:26):
And so she went on to ask acouple other questions.
She said so can I trust my owndreams and my own desires and my
own hopes in being an artistand my joy in creating?
Can I trust that those thingsare his vision for me, not
something that I must give up tofollow him.

(07:47):
Well again, how many of you grewup when you know I was so
scared when the missionarieswould come to church, right the
mission, like once a quarter.
The missionaries would come andthey're wearing their
missionary shirt and they'retalking about they sold it all
and went to Africa and praiseGod for all those people.
But I'm sitting on the back rowgoing oh God, please don't call
me to Africa.

(08:07):
But you know what?
God didn't call me to Africa,he called them to Africa.
God called me to be an artistand God calls some people to be
a business person, and God hascalled some people to be
musicians, and he calls some tobe in five-fold ministry in
equipping the saints for thework of ministry, and he calls
some to be moms and some to bedads and some to be

(08:29):
entrepreneurs.
We've all got a place in thekingdom and the work of ministry
for people that are infive-fold ministry.
Their whole job is not to makeclones, their whole job is to
equip you to do the thing thatGod has called you to do.
And so I just believe again, when you got saved, all of you

(08:49):
got saved and as you walk withthe Lord, he places his desires
in your heart in alignment withyour unique design for your
unique assignment.
So I would just flip the scriptand say your dreams are not in
opposition to God.

(09:09):
Your dreams exist because ofGod.
Right the passions and thedesign and the vision those are
from God.
Religion and fear and shame andall the stuff that we've been
working through in thisfoundations course, those are
the roadblocks of the enemyplaces in our life that want to

(09:31):
block us from walking in thefullness of who God has created
us to be.
And that's why I'm saying whenyou get free and you start
renewing your mind to the truthof who you are in Christ, and
then this is the way I say it asyour identity in Christ is
established, your unique designis uncovered and your assignment

(09:53):
is revealed.
I'll say that again when youridentity in Christ, son loved by
God, all the, when youridentity in Christ is
established, your unique designis uncovered and your assignment
is revealed.
So many people are out theretrying to do things for God with

(10:16):
no thought to who they are inChrist or how God's uniquely
wired them.
They're only trying to keep updoing the religious tap dancing
show and doing it like everybodyelse is doing it, rather than
leaning into the thing that Godhas actually called them to do.
Now, last part of this question, she says so are my desires to

(10:37):
be an artist, his way of callingme to be one?
Absolutely, absolutely.
Because why?
You love Jesus, you're with himevery day, you're wanting to
hear his voice, you're inworship, your heart is leaning
toward him.
Of course and here's the thingthat I would say and I could go
off on this, but I'm not goingto go off on this but your

(10:59):
calling as an artist can blessthe church, but 98% of the time
I just made that up a lot of thetime, a lot of the time, your
art and your gift as an artistcan bless the church, but it's
for the marketplace.
Why?

(11:19):
Because that's where thedoggone people are that need
what it is that you do.
And if the only way that you'recontextualizing your creativity
is within the four walls of thechurch or within a ministry
context, listen, if that's whatGod's called you to do, awesome,
go for it, love it.
But so many people don't stepout beyond that because nobody's

(11:42):
ever given them a context forit.
And that's the whole thing thatwe've been doing all these
years is saying, hey, god's gota plan and a purpose for your
life as an artist, and if partof that is in the marketplace,
there's some knowledge andwisdom and understanding that
you got to get in how to build abody of work, market yourself,
get out and build a business, all that.

(12:02):
That's what we do in thementoring program.
We've been doing that for yearsand years very successfully,
but we're bringing those twothings together.
But a lot of Christian artistsstay frustrated because they
feel like they want to do morewith their art but they've never
been given a context of how todo that, and so they feel
stifled or locked down in thecontext of just a ministry

(12:26):
setting.
And so I would just three threescriptures I'll give you and um
Janie and this is for everybodyelse in, just in regards to this
conversation.
Number one Psalm 37, four coreverse in my life delight
yourself in the Lord and he willgive you a bunch of religious
obligation to weigh you down andmake your life suck.

(12:48):
No, it did not say that Delightyourself in the Lord and he
will give you the what, thedesires of your heart.
How many of you grew up hearingthings like this?
God will only give you what youneed, not what you want.
Yeah, where is that?
Delight yourself Again.

(13:10):
When your heart is completelyhis, he can trust your heart to
release to you everything thatyou need to do to flourish and
to thrive and to walk in theabundance that God designed for
you from the very foundation ofthe earth Abundant.
We got a whole lesson coming onthis.
I'm not going to teach it.
But abundance walking in theabundant life from the very

(13:32):
foundation of the earth Abundantwe got a whole lesson coming on
this.
I'm not going to teach it, butabundance walking in the
abundant life, both eternallyand now, has always been the
plan of God for you and for me.
That's the way he set it up.
So, as we're surrendered to him, we align those purposes and
plans.
And again, your desire to createand be an artist is not
separate from God.
All right, it's an expressionof how he's working through you.

(13:53):
All right, huge Number twoEphesians 2.10.
I've already taught on this inthe course, but I'll just say it
again it is for his workmanshipyou were created in Christ
Jesus, for good works preparedby God beforehand, that we
should walk in them.
Well, guess what, if you'rewired as an artist?

(14:13):
Guess what the good works thatGod prepared for you to walk in
just might I don't know justmight be you being an artist,
just might be you showing up inthe studio and doing the thing
that God created you to do, andthat when you do that, you see
God show up not only in yourlife but through your life.
Number three Romans 12, 6.

(14:34):
We all have different giftsaccording to the grace that's
been given us.
Again, your gift of creativityis a gift from God that came on
board with you when you werecreated by him.
All right, it came with thepackage.
We all get a choice with anygift that God gives us, right?

(14:57):
We can point it in thisdirection, for our own self and
our own whatever, or we canpoint it in the direction of
glorifying him, and again, thisis all in the context of you
love Jesus.
You're going after him, yourheart's submitted to him.
You're feeling this calling asan artist.
Of course this is who he'screated you to be.

(15:17):
Of course this is how hiskingdom gets manifested through
you, and when you do it, he'sglorified and you get to walk in
the abundant life.
Come on everybody, take a run, take a lap around the sanctuary.
I mean, hey, thanks so much forspending a few minutes with me
