5 Simple Steps to Create Art with the Holy Spirit
https://youtu.be/27AyW_sVSeE

Are you carrying the burden of making your art "Christian enough"? Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Bach, and Vermeer never worried about this—and in this video, I'll show you why you shouldn't either.

Most Christian artists today carry two crushing yokes: the pressure to make their art evangelistic and the pressure to make it financially successful. These burdens steal your joy, block the Holy Spirit, and distort the very purpose of creativity.

Jesus said, "Take my yoke upon you... For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30). The great masters understood this deeply—they created from intimacy with God, not from striving or performance.

Drawing on Scripture and the profound teachings of theologian H.R. Rookmaaker, I'll help you discover how art becomes sacred not because of its message, but because of Who you create it with.

✨ THE TRUTH: Your art carries God's presence because YOU carry God's presence. When you create with the Holy Spirit, everything you make becomes an act of worship—whether it "looks Christian" or not.

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Speaker (00:00):
So, what if I told you that the great masters like
Michelangelo and Da Vinci andBach all knew a spiritual secret
about God and creativity thatmost Christian artists have
completely forgotten today?
A secret that could lift thepressure off of your creative
life, unlock deeper joy, andactually help you create with
God in a way that you neverthought was possible.
Well, listen, stick with mebecause today I'm going to show

(00:22):
you exactly what that secret isand why it could change
everything about how you makeart.
See, somewhere along the way, alot of Christian artists
started carrying burdens thatthose old masters never really
carried.
They weren't creating under thepressure to evangelize with
their art or monetize or provetheir spirituality through their
creativity.

(00:42):
They weren't wondering if theirart was Christian enough.
But today, many of us feel thatthat pressure is on us and it's
there every time we walk in thestudio.
But friend, listen, thoseweights and those expectations
are exactly what end up stealingour joy and block the very
presence of God that we'relonging to create from.
So before we talk about thesecret that the masters knew, we

(01:05):
need to name those two heavyyokes that almost every
Christian artist is carrying, yokes that Jesus never asked you
to pick up.
One's the evangelistic yoke, and it typically says, you know,
your art only matters if itproduces some sort of tangible
spiritual result in somebody'slife, somebody gets saved or
somebody has an encounter withGod.

(01:26):
Let me jump in and say thisbecause I can hear some of you
now saying, man, of course Iwant to see God move in and
through my art.
I want to see people saved andhealed and delivered and
transformed and have anencounter with this presence.
And listen, of course I do.
That's what this whole channelis about.
But listen, when we allow thethings that happen through our
art to define us as an artist, when we're allowing the results,

(01:50):
if you will, to define who weare and the maybe lack of
results to hang as a weightaround our neck, we take
responsibility for outcomes thatGod never designed for us to be
responsible for.
And the other one is uh what Ilike to call a monetary yoke.
And a lot of times it says, well, you know, your art only
matters if it sells or makes alot of money, which totally

(02:13):
plays into this whole hustleculture that we all are in big
time.
But listen, both of these yokeswhisper the same kind of line.
They they're whispering all thetime, make something happen,
prove something, earn yourvalue, do something that
matters.
And, you know, suddenly yourart studio becomes this pressure
cooker and all the joy leaksout and the freedom disappears.
And the this gentle invitationof the Holy Spirit that we all

(02:36):
want to operate from getsdrowned out by things like
anxiety and striving andcomparison.
I don't know if you if you canrelate to that, but I sure can
in my life.
But the beautiful thing is I'vediscovered a truth.
God never put the burden ofthose kind of results on our
shoulders.
Our worth is not established bythe sale of our work.

(02:56):
Our impact isn't measured byour following on social media or
whether somebody has an altarcall moment with our art.
Our art is not a sermon that wegot to preach or a product that
we have to justify or thismachine that we have to, you
know, get to perform.
Listen, friend, our art, firstand foremost and forever, is for

(03:17):
God.
Solodeo Gloria, for his gloryalone.
Now, before I go any further, let me show you what this looked
like actually in the hands ofsome of the great masters from
history, because I believe thisis exactly why they created the
way they did.
In fact, you know, you look atsomebody like Michelangelo that
once said, Many believe, and Ibelieve, he said, that I've been

(03:41):
designated for this work byGod.
I love that.
I mean, you can you can feelthat in the pieta, the the
weight of calling, this sense ofdivine stewardship that he had,
and this awareness that hisartistic gift wasn't just
random, but it was actuallyassigned specifically to him by
the creator of the universehimself.

(04:03):
You look at somebody likeLeonardo da Vinci that believed
you know, studying nature wasthe study of the mind of the
creator, that every brushstrokewas participation in the divine
imagination.
Or if you're a musician, maybethink about Johann Sebastian
Bach, who at the end of all ofhis manuscripts wrote SDG, Solo

(04:23):
de O Gloria for the glory ofGod, not as a slogan, but as a
statement of identity that thiswork that I'm creating belongs
to God and I'm just the steward.
And then there's, you know, ifyou're a painter, maybe think
about Vermeer, this quiet Dutchartist who painted simple sort
of domestic scenes like lightfalling on ordinary moments or a

(04:46):
girl pouring milk or a youngwoman at a window.
Listen, he wasn't trying topreach or or persuade.
He wasn't out there decoratingaltars in churches.
He was revealing the sacred andthe sacredness of the moments
that we have in everyday life inthe ordinary.
God in a milk pitcher and inmorning light and in an open

(05:07):
window, the presence of Godshowing up in everyday life.
Listen, none of these artistswere forcing their work to have
to preach or say something.
None of them were creatingunder this pressure to try to
convert somebody.
None of them were worried likemany of us can be today, whether
our art was Christian enough.
They they didn't create forvalidation.

(05:28):
Listen, they created fromvalidation, knowing that the art
that they created came from Godthrough them and for his glory.
In fact, one of my favorite arttheologians and historians,
H.R.
Rookmacher, talks about in hisbook, Art Needs No
Justification, that it's notart's job to really validate

(05:50):
Christianity, but it'sChristianity that infuses art
with life and and with meaning.
And so for you and for me asartists, it's our relationship
with God, it's our faith thatbrings life and transformation
to what we do artistically.
Now, here's where this getsreally good because they
discovered, I believe, somethingthat's really holy.

(06:12):
Art doesn't become sacredbecause of what it says or or
how it looks.
Art becomes sacred because ofwho you're creating it with,
because of who inspired it, andbecause who is moving through
it?
Listen, that's the secret,right?
That that's the freedom.
That's what Jesus invites allof us artists into.
You know, Jesus said in Matthew11, 28 through 30, in one of my

(06:35):
favorite passages from themessage translation, he said,
Are you tired and and worn out?
Are you burned out on religion?
And then he said, Come to meand listen to this.
I love this part.
He said, get away with me andyou'll recover your life.
I'll show you how to take areal rest.
Walk with me and work with meand watch how I do it and learn.

(06:58):
Get this the unforced rhythmsof grace.
Come on.
I love that.
And then he said, Listen, Iwon't lay anything heavy or
ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you'lllearn to live freely and
lightly.
Listen, this is God's heart foryou and for me as a creative,
uh, a light yoke, an easyburden, a joyful process, a

(07:21):
relational experience with theHoly Spirit, not for performance
to prove your value as anartist, but listen, we don't
have to do that.
We can just operate from thatplace of life with Him.
Now, listen, that doesn't meanthat we don't have any
responsibility as an artist.
Of course we do, right?
To steward the gift, to grow inour skills, to you know, show

(07:41):
up faithfully every day to or ona regular basis to create, to
cultivate excellence and all thethings that we do.
But the weights, the thepressure to perform this demand
to produce results and do itfaster and bigger and better and
all that, listen, that's notand it never has been our job.
The job of producing results ishis.
Connection is our calling, hisjob is the fruit.

(08:04):
Your job is to bring the fiveloaves and fishes, which is your
art, and it's his job tomultiply that impact more than
you could ever ask or imagine.
And listen, when you createfrom that place, from intimacy
rather than insecurity, your artbecomes something so much more
powerful than you can everimagine.
It literally becomes anexpression of the glory of God.

(08:26):
Now, listen, you might bewondering, well, what does this
actually look like practicallyfor me as an artist?
Well, Rookmacher actually saidsomething else in his book, Art
Needs No Justification, thatthat really is important about
these master artists.
And it really kind ofcompletely flips the script on
what many Christians think abouttheir art.
He said about these masters, hesaid they worked to the glory

(08:48):
of God.
They did not compromise theirart, they were not tools for
religious propaganda.
Their work was meaningful as anend in itself.
And get this, he said, theywere God's glory.

unknown (09:02):
Wow.

Speaker (09:03):
I just I just loved that.
That hit me so hard when I readthat.
It's like it reminds me of whatSt.
Irenaeus said in the secondcentury when he said, the glory
of God is man fully alive.
In other words, that there's nogreater way that you and I can
glorify God than to do what hecreated you to do, which is for
us to create art.
No other justification in ourlife is needed.

(09:26):
We don't have to prove it toanybody.
It's enough because God gave itto us.
And see, your art becomessacred the moment that you, a
spirit-filled child of God, putyour hands to it in love and
presence and faithfulstewardship because Christ is in
you.
And that's the hope of glory, the Bible says.
And your art becomes a window,a whisper, a doorway into the

(09:49):
kingdom of God.
It's not supernatural becauseof what you do.
Your art is supernaturalbecause of who you are.
See, God designed your art tobe bigger than messaging, deeper
than trite metaphors, and moremysterious than meanings that we
try to give it.
Our art is a gift from Godwoven into our design before we

(10:11):
even took a breath.
See, art is a process with Godwhere He meets with us in the
making, in our studios.
It's a mystery in God, carryingbeauty that we can never
express in our words or in ourmetaphors.
Art is a gift to the world thatbreaks through people's lives,
where logic can fail sometimes.

(10:31):
Art is often a magnifyingglass, helping people see the
things that they've forgotten oran invitation, like a doorway
to wonder and reflect onpossibilities and on God's
presence.
And it's a table that peoplecan encounter God, a place where
heaven touches earth.
Listen, art is always anopportunity for transformation,

(10:54):
not because you and I forcedsome kind of overtly Christian
outcome, but because Godbreathed on what we created with
Him.
And so, my friend, I reallywant to encourage you today,
stop trying to make your workand your life feel Christian
enough.
Stop forcing the meaning whereGod simply is inviting you to
walk with him in this process ofcreating.

(11:17):
Stop carrying all these burdensof outcomes, these spiritual
burdens, these financial burdensto prove yourself.
Listen, those are things thatJesus never asked you to carry.
Your art, when it's born fromintimacy with him and offered in
worship and surrender to him inlove, is already doing, I
promise you, it's already doingmore for the kingdom than you

(11:38):
realize.
And when you and I learn torest in that, you can enjoy the
process of making and sharingyour art without all of those
heavy yokes weighing you down.
And you can learn to live inthe unforced rhythms of grace
God designed for all of us asartists in his kingdom.
Hey, before I pray for youtoday, I want to invite you to

(11:59):
answer something for me in thecomments.
And it's this what burden areyou ready to give to Jesus and
ask him to lift off of yourcreative life today?
My friend, I promise you, hewants to walk with you in the
abundant life that he promisedyou.
Take those burdens away.
And uh, that doesn't have to besomewhere way far down the
road.
It can happen right now aswe're praying together.

(12:21):
And listen, one more thingbefore I pray, if this message
is stirring something deepinside of you, I really want to
invite you to watch the nextvideo that I've linked below
called Five Simple Ways toCreate Art with the Holy Spirit.
It's gonna take you even deeperinto this journey of creating
your art with God.
Free, light, joyful, and fullof his presence.

(12:41):
All right.
So let's pray together.
Jesus, I thank you that youdidn't create us to be weighed
down with financial burdens andreligious burdens and proving
ourselves and trying to makestuff happen in our life.
God, you invited us into anabundant life and to live at a
pace that is joyful.

(13:03):
Your unforced rhythms of grace.
And so, Holy Spirit, right now,we just confess that Lord, in
places where we've gone our ownway, in places where we've felt
the need to try to proveourselves to somebody or through
something or even to ourselves,Lord, we just repent of that.
We come out of agreement withthose burdens that you never

(13:26):
designed for us to carry.
And Lord, we receive yourtruth.
We receive your invitationright now, God, to step into the
unforced rhythms of your graceso that we can live in the light
of your joy and of your freedomand of your creative nature
that's already living in usthrough the power of the Holy

(13:48):
Spirit.
Thank you, Holy Spirit, fortaking those burdens away and
for giving us the light yokethat you promised.
In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.
