(00:16):
Everyone, welcome to The Withering Effect, episode 181.
Today's date is September 7th, 2024 and I am duds, or duds
versus known to the rest of the interwebs.
And I'm Carl, you may know me asCarl Rides.
Today we are going to be giving our thoughts on the Minecraft
movie trailer and share your comments from our Discord as
well. But before all of that, what

(00:36):
have you been up to recently? Duds.
Not a lot. So I think last show we actually
ended with Susie recovering, doing really good and she didn't
make it so that that little false sense of she's doing
better is actually quite frequent.
And the only thing I can say is I got one really good last

(01:01):
weekend with her. That's really good though.
So that was really good. Yeah.
To not bring a downer to it. So during the week I have to go
to work and I'm at work for 9 1/2 to almost 10 hours a day.
So my grandmother would take herduring the week so she could get
24 hour care so she's not lockedup in the house by herself
because since March, she's been fighting with some stuff and it

(01:24):
hasn't been great. But come Friday afternoon, I
drive all the way over to my grandmother's house, pick her
up. And I got her all weekend.
Well, Tuesday morning my grandmother called me and said,
hey, you have to come. Today is the day.
And I, I wasn't as much as I hadbeen mentally preparing for it.
I wasn't ready. Yeah.
And it, it was rough. And the fact that like everyone

(01:48):
told me, she's going to go mentally and she's just going to
have this look of defeat on her.And you'll know when you know,
And I get to my grandmother's house Tuesday expecting that.
And Susie's standing up, She's fighting.
She's got that look in her face like I just want to keep going.
So I now I'm, I'm dying on the inside just like, no, she's,

(02:10):
she's fighting. If she's fighting, I'm fighting.
Let's keep fighting. And then we get to the vet and
he goes, no, her breath got really bad.
Basically every time she was breathing, she was in pain.
And she just got really good at hiding it around me.
And then they did some tests. Her kidneys were gone 100%,

(02:31):
nothing left. And he said we can put her on
dialysis, but she's going to be in pain the entire time and it's
not going to help. You're just going to extend the
process out a little bit. And she's, she would have been
15 basically this week. Wow.
So he was like, no one's operating on a 15 year old dog.

(02:51):
Yeah. He's like, the best thing you
can do for her is let her go to sleep.
And so I, I broke down, I lost it and took a day or so off from
work and then my grandmother took her, got her cremated.
There's a really nice pet cremation place near here.
And I have not been in front of a microphone since.

(03:12):
I, I've tried getting on and playing Minecraft a little.
And. Yeah, it's been OK.
The problem is as creators, you know this Carl, we all have
creator voices. And for me to get into my
creator voices, I put a smile onmy face.
That's how I get my my voice. And I haven't felt like smiling

(03:34):
for a while. Understandably.
Yeah, so. And I feel bad because I feel
like it's just a dog. I should have gotten over this
by now, but. No, no, no, no.
Yeah, Susie. Susie was my rock for 15 years.
I didn't even want Susie. Susie showed up because my
roommate wanted a girlfriend andthought a puppy was an easy way

(03:56):
to get one. And he got the girlfriend and I
got Susie. I.
Suppose it works, but that is a terrible way to live your life.
Yeah. OK.
But basically since that day, Susie's been at my hip.
I think I've only, I think I've been without Susie, including

(04:17):
the the days she would spend at my grandmother's house a little
over a month in almost 15 years.Wow, crazy.
We were very close. Lots of sadness, lots of
preoccupying myself of doing things around the house and
such. I'll, I'll go over more of those
because we're actually filming the half stack right after this.

(04:38):
I say filming, recording. It's a big day recording the
half stack right after this. Yeah.
So I'll talk about that more if you guys want to hear more about
some of the stuff I've been doing to preoccupy myself.
But I don't want to keep talkingabout sad stuff because I'm
already tearing up just talking about this now and you don't
deserve that. Then I will take over.

(04:58):
Yeah, patreon.com/the weather ineffect for the half stack.
Got to get the plug in there. I've been working last week or
so. My my MOT is due on my car.
What's MOT? So for yeah, for people outside
the UK, that's the yearly safetycheck.
We just call that inspection. My car's 17 years old and I do
not drive like a Christian motorist.

(05:19):
I hit speed bumps far too hard and my car is tiny and all that
jazz. For the the Southerners out
there, what Carl means to say ishe drives like woo.
That that. That's basically it.
So yeah, my, my car, it's a smart car, so it's not
particularly well built. Oh, Carl, that's not a car,
that's a toy. OK, my toy is broken.

(05:43):
I, I played with it too much. We've replaced some parts on it
and got it up to spec and everything and got it all going.
Well, we went out in it tonight and it's stopped clunking and is
driving smooth and all that kindof stuff, so I'm happy with
that. So it should hopefully pass its
inspection beautifully. So yeah, I've been working on

(06:05):
that with my dad for like the past week in between work as
well, trying to get bits done onit because I live far enough
that buses and trains and taxis are annoying and expensive.
Yeah, I really need my car though.
Yeah, that's been most of my last week or so.
I've been looking at playing Minecraft Dungeons.
I haven't got to it yet because I haven't had the time.

(06:27):
But for those of you who have listened to past episodes, I
play all my games, most of them anyway, apart from like one or
two on a service called Boosteroid, which is basically
like GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud gaming because most of the
Windows games. And it means that I can play
them on my tablet and my phone and my computer and my laptop

(06:49):
without having to install them on all those devices as well.
So it works out pretty well. And it's pretty cheap as well.
It's like half the price of likeNetflix.
So they have support now for Minecraft Dungeons Fire Xbox?
Nice. So I need to sort out get in the
game, getting it on my account and sorting that out.
I just, I, I sent you a message about it the other day, but I

(07:10):
just haven't had time to get around to it.
So hopefully I'll give you an update on the next episode about
how that that's going. I've got my controller and stuff
that I use for certain games like Hitman.
So yeah. I actually picked up my Nintendo
Switch and played dungeons the other night because we lost the
Internet at the house and I don't pay for TV or anything, I
just pay for Internet. So when that goes out, I have no

(07:31):
entertainment other than readingand I'm actually in between
books right now I don't have anything to read.
So I picked up my Switch going oh wait I have dungeons I can
play that offline. Nice.
Yeah, very cool. I love the dungeons game.
It looks really cool. It's so.
Fun. That's why when it came up on
the list of added games recently, I was like, oh, and

(07:53):
the final thing, I think last episode we said Cubed hadn't
announced the date yet, correct? So that's the 4th to the 6th of
October. I think it was under maintenance
or construction or whatever they're calling it last episode.
So that now has been confirmed. We have been on the booth
server. I don't think you've been on the
booth server actually, but we. Yeah, I have not.

(08:14):
I've seen our design though. Yeah, we designed On the River
in effect forever. I rebuilt it on the cube booth
server already, so we're just waiting for approval and stuff
on that. We have a panel in the works,
which is basically our live episode from Cubed.
Again, no confirmation on that because I I haven't confirmed
anything as yet, but I'll give alittle bit more exclusive

(08:35):
information on that during the post show because I don't want
to make it public public at the moment because of it's not
nothing's been confirmed yet. Hint, hint, wink wink.
But yeah, that's been my kind ofmonth since the last time we put
out an episode. Nice, Should we get into the
main event? The main event.

(09:00):
And that is the Minecraft movie teaser, not trailer teaser,
because you know, we need a teaser for the trailer for the
movie. Oh, you definitely do these
days. Carl knows that very well, yeah.
What did we think overall? Jarring is the word that came to
mind. Okay, I was going through and I
had one of the things I did was I grabbed an old tablet that I

(09:20):
hadn't ever used and I say hadn't ever used.
I haven't used it in like 4 years, but that was one of my
projects of hey, I need to distract myself, let's do
something. Yeah, so I found an old tablet
and I found a Bluetooth keyboardthat would connect to it.
OK. So I connected that all up and
I'm using it as a thing and I have a sitting in my living

(09:41):
room. The office is a very hard space
to be because that's where we spent most of our time.
But yeah, I'm set up in the living room anyways, and I'm
watching the trailer and I'm pausing it and writing stuff and
pausing it and writing stuff. And then I open the notes page
up and I see all of your list. Carl's list takes up the entire
screen, by the way. It does.
So I was like, you know what? Forget my list.

(10:03):
Carl does a pretty good breakdown of everything, and I'm
just going to comment on what hewrote down.
Cool. So I'm going to let Carl lead
this because his list was way more critical.
This is the word I'm going to say than mine.
Yeah, so this list is kind of mewatching it the first time,
watching some reactions to it, watching it again, and then
watching it for a third time. This is my soft version of what

(10:25):
I had a rich because I was not happy.
But reflecting on it, there's some good stuff here.
We'll go for it. There's five different sections,
so I'm actually just going to take these in the sections.
They are in my list here. Yeah, no, your your list works
good. I was going to break it down by
time stamps, but I think you're jumping around actually works
out better. We'll start with world and

(10:46):
technical. People were talking about the
portal. The portals are purple in
Minecraft, Yeah, but that's not the portal to the Never Guys.
That is the portal from the IRL world to the Minecraft world, so
it being blue makes perfect sense in my eyes.
Except it doesn't. OK, go on.
This was my first big grape is because I said the same thing.
I said like everyone else, why is it blue?

(11:06):
The nether portal is purple and I was like oh wait this isn't a
portal to the nether. And then I went why is it shaped
like another portal? The end portal is not shaped
like another portal and it's a portal to a different world.
Fair. Shouldn't the in real life world
portal be shaped like a different portal and not made
out of Obsidian at the same time?
That's my thought is like, hey, you get a chance to create a
cool looking portal here and youdidn't take advantage of it.

(11:28):
And that's kind of that's the hint of basically all the
breakdowns you're about to hear.OK yeah, it's giving me Jumanji
vibes. Yep, I agree.
Which I think if you read the synopsis of the film under the
video, it's basically Jumanji. They get sucked into the
Minecraft world. And I will put this I really
like Jumanji. Yeah, including the the remix

(11:48):
later with Jack Black. Jumanji, the last one that came
out with Jack Black was awesome.Loved it.
Yeah. It was.
I loved every minute of it. It surprised me with how good it
was. I don't think this is going to
be as good. I'm holding out hope, yeah.
I'm not going to be as critical as you.
I'm still going to be critical. This is probably well, that you
could go either way on. Biomes look totally fake, too
detailed like a texture pack andresource pack and it's obvious

(12:12):
it's on a green screen. Yes, you can see where the main
set yes meets the green screen. It looks awful.
There is a hard line where you can see it.
Yep, I was watching. Well first I want to say we got
leaked behind the scenes pictures and I said if this is
the set it's bad. Yeah, we were looking at that
after an episode. I don't think it was recorded

(12:33):
our chat about that. I don't think so.
Yeah, it was bad, but I was watching Filza's breakdown.
I like watching Filza every oncein a while.
He's not a main content person Iwatch, but I definitely watch
spurts of him and he was doing abreakdown in the trailer, so I
said well, let's see what he thinks.
He basically said it's all rail craft mods in the movie and it
really was He you pulled up a picture of it and turned up the

(12:56):
the trees looked identical and then it had the the hyper
realistic texture pack next to it.
It's like, Oh my God, that's exactly what it is.
Yeah, and this is again, you hada cool thing and you blew it
because you're using modded as your inspiration when the
vanilla game, that's the bigger thing.
Like I've really felt they should kept not copy the vanilla

(13:17):
style 1 to one. Like, you'd really do need some
creative. Oh yeah, of.
Course flexibility. But he leaned way too far away
from it. Yeah, the cast lighting is off.
The lights are always behind them.
You can see like a harsh light behind them that's supposed to
be quote UN quote the sun. I was going to say the exact

(13:38):
same thing is like, I think they're trying to replicate
Minecraft lighting systems and it didn't come out great.
Yeah, because when Jack Black istalking to the other characters,
they're on opposite sides of thesort of fall area, and the light
is behind both of them. That is impossible.
Yeah that looks really bad. In my opinion it's the light is

(13:58):
far too harsh for a start and secondly the sun can't be behind
both of them at the same time. Yeah, I understood what they
were trying to do. It just didn't come out very
well. And I think someone should have
caught it and said, hey, I get it.
But cinematically we need to change this a bit.
What Filza said in his video that I agreed with 100% is it's

(14:19):
the uncanny valley. Yeah, but everywhere, yeah.
And I will say that especially for the this technical section,
this is from someone who studiedmedia at college, has done media
degrees and stuff like that. So I am picking this apart in a
way that no one will when they go to the cinema, you know?
I do want to explain for people who don't know.
The uncanny valley is like when you have a CGI character that's

(14:41):
supposed to mimic real life but something's just a little off.
Think of Tarkin in Rogue One when they CGI the real actor's
face on him. Or Tron Legacy where they de
aged? God what's his name?
I just keep calling him The Dudebecause of Big Lebowski.
The Dude. But yeah, when they de aged him,
you get the what they call the uncanny valley, where it just

(15:02):
looks off. So the CG in this movie teaser
is just all off. Yeah.
Which is you can't get an uncanny valley on just like
stationary objects. But somehow they did.
Yeah. I'm going to throw some praise a
little bit, though. The scene when we first go
through the portal and you see that natural arch, that terrain

(15:23):
looks amazing and I would love to have it in the game.
Oh, it does look amazing, but itdoesn't look like Minecraft.
Exactly as. Soon as I saw that, I was like,
right, this is how this is going, Yeah.
Talking about the CGI, the proportions between the CGI, the
set and the casts are way out bydifferent amounts in different

(15:44):
scenes. In that original part of the the
teaser where they're walking towards the mountains, For one,
the mountains look the fakest mountains I've ever seen in my
life. But secondly, the trees that are
there, which look to be actual set pieces because we've seen
some of them in those pictures, they look tiny compared to the
cast. Could be a perspective thing,

(16:05):
but when you go to again, the the sort of top area of the
castle, when the Jack Black is going, I'm Steve, the blocks on
his side look smaller than the blocks on the other side where
the other people in the cast are.
So the proportions and the continuity of those proportions
are way out in different scenes. There's also a scene where they

(16:27):
do the whole there's a floating tree and the kid picks up the
block. That block that's been broken is
so tiny compared to the rest of the tree.
Yeah, they should have thought about that and it really should
have been the size of a softballfor the non American audience.
The size of a sofa ball is bigger than a baseball, but

(16:48):
still big enough he were you could pick it up in one hand.
Yeah, he picks it up and he, like, holds it between his thumb
and finger. I'm like.
Yeah, between two fingers. I'm like dude that tree is
massive. Yeah, I didn't really like that.
I like showing off the the floating tree and the basically
item drop. Yeah, animation.
And it's like, OK, that's on thethat's mine, crafty.

(17:09):
But that proportion size, come on man, it's not hard.
Yeah, I'm now going to say something positive about the
world. And I'm going to agree.
That never looks amazing. The nether looks awesome, so
good. I want that nether.
Can we get another update with that nether?
Yeah, I saw that never. I was like, right, backup board.

(17:29):
I love the piglin designs. Yeah, I think the piglin designs
are cool. Yeah, the piglings are cool.
I feel like they're a little bitOTT, just a smidge, but I'm on
board with them moving on to thecast.
Now. This is where I show my lack of
knowledge of actors. Yeah, Steve to me just seems
like Jack Black who's crawled out of bed and put a blue

(17:51):
T-shirt on. Yeah, it's not the most exciting
wardrobe in the world, and I getit.
Steve is a very simple character.
But that is just, it's Jack Black who's walked into the
room. It's not a character, yeah, but
I love Jack Black, but that's just him.
Here's my hot take. I don't think Steve should have
been in the movie period. Interesting.
The most fascinating part of Minecraft and something that I

(18:13):
miss in all the games, especially nowadays with the
hero shooters and all that stuff, is where you have to play
as a designed person. Is Minecraft was meant to be
your story? Yeah, you are in the game.
And I thought this movie was going to try to be be like that.
So everyone should be Steve. And since you now put a person

(18:34):
as Steve in the game, you can't be Steve.
Therefore, I'd lose some of that.
Yeah. Imagination point, but I don't
know what they're doing with thestory so I'm going to start
there. Yeah, but Jack plaque does not
look the part of Steve at all. I would have to hope they're
doing a Jumanji point back with Robin Williams, where Steve got

(18:55):
in the game a long time ago and he's basically been living in
the game and that's why he has the long hair and bushy beard.
Because if you're gonna go by what Steve looks like as the
default skin, it's not Jack Black.
Which I'm fine with, but you better explain it in the story.
Yeah, fair enough. The rest of the cast I've never
heard of. Which surprises me.
They seem fine, I've only heard of Jack.
I know of the the adult woman and the adult male.

(19:17):
Isn't she from Orange is the NewBlack?
Things. She was like an Oscar nominated
actress. She's really good and I just
can't remember what I've seen her in.
And he was in Aquaman or something.
Yeah, I love Jason Momoa. I love him.
I think he really has the chops for a comedy.
I think the costume design was absolutely horrible.
Yeah, they put her in a windbreaker to start with.

(19:40):
It's like a windbreaker is not nice, like at all.
It looks like they've spent about $20 on the entire wardrobe
for this movie. Yeah, well, they had to resize
the jacket for Jason Momoa. It just looks bad.
Yeah, the entire wardrobe just looks bad.
Yeah. And can we talk about the why
did? Why do they have a tesseract?
Yes. I didn't notice that until

(20:01):
someone pointed it out and I'd watched it three times.
Yeah. So obviously they're going to do
the story point where the heroeshave to find a doohickey and
that doohickey will then save the world or take them home or
something like that, which kind of don't like because that
doesn't follow the story in the game.
Yeah, Someone said that they were kind of leaning on was it

(20:23):
Minecraft Legends? Yeah.
Which I don't like because that game flop.
Yeah, which is a failed. Game.
It flopped hard. That's a good thing to base your
film. And you had dungeons, which,
yeah, has a pretty good storyline.
Yeah, I don't know. There's that.
Oh, the characters, I want to say, is unlikable.
And I don't think it's obviouslynot the actor's fault.

(20:44):
It's the way the teaser was set up.
First of all, you have Jack Black doing the I Am Steve
thing, not looking like Steve atall.
I feel like they should have opened the teaser with that.
Yeah, I feel like that would have worked better, but.
And then you have the girl calling him a tool bag.
Yeah, if you want us to like Jack Black as Steve, don't have
another character making fun of Jack Black playing Steve in your

(21:06):
trailer. Of us because we are Steve in
the game. Exactly what are you doing?
To be fair, I think she's quite a good actress.
She seems pretty cool, but and it's not her fault that's the
line she was given. But like that is bad.
You're basically going the entire audience a tool bag.
Yes, I think that's an oversight.
I don't think it's intended to come come off that way, but

(21:26):
that's the way it came off. Yeah.
And I'm like, no, no, what are you doing here?
Yeah, we don't know the context of that scene yet.
We don't. That's why I'm calling.
It's an editing error. Teaser trailer was put together
in a way. It was put together to get
engagement and it certainly did that.
We are making an entire episode on it, for example.
Yeah, I'm so tired of the let's make it bad for engagement

(21:48):
stuff. Yeah.
I don't think they're doing it to get engagement.
I think they think this is amazing.
Yeah, yeah, Mob. Mobs.
I'm going to say some good things about the mobs, and I'm
going to say some bad things about the mobs.
Let's start with the obvious onethat she looks possessed.
Yes, tone it down a bit. Someone did an art style where
they redid the eyes in the mouth.

(22:09):
It looks so much better. They need to desonicfy that
thing. Yeah, you can 90% keep your same
art style and model everything. Just you just work with the eyes
in the mouth a little bit and itlooks so much better.
Yeah, it's it's less jarring. Yeah, just tone those down a
bit. I think this is where we move on
to the next one. The llama actually doesn't look
that bad. I'm actually quite on board with

(22:30):
the llama. I like the llama.
I really like the llama. And that's because they didn't
go OTT on the face like they didwith the sheep.
And the llama kind of fits. I feel like the llama's a lot
more blocky than the sheep is aswell.
Which, yeah, when I saw the llama, I was like, oh, good.
There are actually some mobs in this that don't look terrible,
as we said before. Piglans are good.
Piglans are great, maybe a little bit OTT on the whole

(22:52):
angry kind of look, but they're fine.
They're great. They're creeper look, it's a bit
too fluffy. Yeah, the I I get the creepers
supposed to be grassy and mossy. It needed to be more hairy than
fluffy. Yeah, I kind of want to cuddle a
creeper. Yeah, when I see it like that.
Yeah, it's a bit again, just they've gone from the same with
the world, the overworld. Anyway, they've gone a bit too

(23:14):
over the top on detail. They need to just tone it back a
little bit. Yeah, and I think it wouldn't be
half as jarring as it is. Yes, the wolf looks pretty good.
Wolf looked good and the gas looks awesome.
The whole gas thing is just brilliant in that trailer.
The thing that I loved about thegas thing is the last creator
clash thing we did was piglin balloons.

(23:36):
Yep. And it's where the Piglins
turned the gas into balloons. And I was like, oh perfect.
It brought over. The only thing that I don't like
about this, and it's not mob design, is the fact that the
piglins were in the overworld and they didn't turn into
zombies. That's not how the game works.
Yep. And that's when people were
like, well, I think, I think they're taking the story from

(23:57):
legends because in legends the piglins don't turn into zombie
piglins when they go into the overworld.
Oh, I didn't realize that. And that's when I went.
Oh, bad call. Yeah, my brother-in-law loves
saying that. It's a bold move, Cotton.
Let's see if it works out for him.
That is a bold move. It's like eating a Pot Noodle at
7:00 in the morning. It's a bold move.
Don't talk about food. I'm hungry.

(24:19):
I honestly haven't eaten anything since 9:00 this
morning. Cut dots had a migraine.
He did interiors and crafting. The interiors look pretty good
compared to the overworld. I loved the interiors, they look
so good. That big crafting table is
awesome. Yep, the recipe don't make much
sense, but the crafting table isawesome.

(24:40):
The crafting pattern could have been a little bit bigger, but I
knew that that was a crafting table, obviously, from looking
at it. Yeah.
So that was great. The recipe.
Yeah. Come on.
Seriously, you guys, you couldn't do at least a recipe?
Why is he hitting the crafting table with a hammer?
That's the stuff I don't like. That's the stuff that makes me
think you solve Minecraft and then never played it.

(25:03):
Yeah, that's the part that upsets me the most.
It's like little stuff like that.
It would have been so easy to just find a recipe that they
could craft and put it in that. Isn't Vu a producer on this
film? Oh Lord.
I'm pretty sure if you look at the production list.
Yeah, but producers don't alwaysmean that.
Like, you could be a technical producer and he could have gone

(25:24):
and played the game in front of them for a while.
True. And then not been on set again.
Yeah, true. But I won't.
I won't blame Boo for that. That's a fairpoint.
Blocks in the background look good.
The TNT. Yeah, I love the TNT block on
the show. Yeah, I'm, I'm really, I'm
really hyped on the interiors. They look really good.
I think the buildings themselveslooked really good.

(25:46):
There's some stuff that, again, that's not in Minecraft.
I saw some vertical slab being used.
Yeah, I got a little upset. I'm like, hey, hey, vertical
stabs or slabs are illegal. Can't have those.
I want to say we don't get in 122.
They've released this trailer before Minecraft Live.
Remember that They could have waited till Minecraft Live to
announce this film and to show the teaser trailer and they

(26:07):
chose not to. That's an interesting choice if
we don't get gas balloon. I don't think we're getting
gasp. Chain together bucket.
Don't forget wooden hammers. Wooden hammers.
We have the Mace, which is essentially the same thing but.
And everything else they show inthis film, in this teaser, if we
don't get all these things addedto the game in 122, missed an
opportunity. I did see some people

(26:29):
complaining, like if you look atthat scene again, on the left
hand side, there's a diamond sword and a gold sword hanging
up on the wall. I really like the design of
those two swords. Yeah.
I've never been a fan of Minecraft tool design as it is.
It's too pixelated, especially nowadays.
So to see a, a more clean version up on the wall, I was

(26:52):
like, OK, I really, a lot of people were complaining about
that from what I saw. And I was like, I I kind of like
that. I can't wait for someone to
create that as a texture pack. I will probably put that on my
texture pack. So we want that changed in 1/22
as well. Yeah, yeah.
And we want our updated never from this film as well.
The Nether was so good. Yeah.
So good, so good. I did notice.

(27:15):
So if you're paying attention tothe water and lava physics in
the overworld, the lava in the background is very cubed, very
much like you would see it in the game.
The water physics are not. The water physics looks like
real life water. And I was like, why would they
do it like that, blah, blah, blah.
But then they switch over to theNether, and in the Nether, the

(27:38):
lava is no more super cubed again.
They give it a little bit more animation, a little bit more
oomph. And so it looks different.
And I go, OK, so there is some attention to detail.
Yeah. Because they know lava works
differently in the Nether compared to in the overworld.
So I like that attention. So I thought that was cool.
In conclusion, and this is kind of where we can come in and talk

(28:00):
about stuff that we've missed during that list and all that
kind of jazz, this should have been an animated movie, yes.
It should have been story mode. Yes, because the IRL CGI looks
bad, especially in the overworld.
I'll say the art style because I'm going to use this example
for the last thing you have under conclusion.
They should have went with the Mario Brothers movie.

(28:22):
Yeah, that just recently came out that art style.
Yep. So it's it's not it doesn't look
like the game, which I'm sure that's one reason they chose to
do it this way. So it didn't look like the game.
It didn't look like fan animatedor anything like that.
I think they really should have gone with the Super Mario
Brothers art style. Yeah, and I could see putting

(28:43):
real life bits with. That, yeah, but another question
why was it filmed in New Zealand?
I'm going to assume tax breaks. Yeah, it's 90% CGI, Yeah, but
yeah, probably tax breaks. They probably used the backdrop
of New Zealand as the actual backdrop and then just pixelated
it. Because I feel like if you were

(29:03):
going to make a fully IRL film, New Zealand's a great place to
do that. New Zealand's amazing looking.
It's a beautiful country. I'd love to visit New Zealand in
Australia. That's like my bucket list right
there. He's gonna go straight over us
and go straight to them. I'll see how it is.
Shoot. I'd go straight over California
to him. Your ways too far.

(29:24):
That's true. Feels like a bit of a cash grab.
Yeah. They've been working on this for
10 years. And I feel like they've seen the
success of video game movies in the last couple of years, and
they've gone. We need to get this out now.
Yep. And they've sort of rushed it.
I'm 100% there. I think the fact that the most
recent, it's Sonic the Hedgehog's fault.

(29:45):
Yeah, that did well and I love that movie.
That movie's a good movie. It's not a great movie, but it's
a good movie. Detective Pikachu were pretty
cool as well and that was CGI mix mixed with IRL.
Oh, yeah. I mean, if you were going to do
it like you need to do that, Yeah, it needs to be that.
I forgot about Detective Pikachu.
That's a good point. Yeah, it's a good film.

(30:05):
Great CGI real life mix that film.
And then, like I said, you have the Super Mario Brothers and
stuff. Yeah, but I feel like even
though we've said all that, thisfilm's made for kids, it's not
made for us, even though a lot of people have grown up with
Minecraft and they're like our age.
So that was my point. I thought of that too.
I said, well, they didn't make this movie because everyone's
great. They're not making this movie

(30:26):
for you. And I went why not?
Yeah. Why not?
The average age of the Minecraftplayer is 24.
It is not 6. Yet they act like it's 6. 10
year olds are going to see this and they can see a bad movie
from a mile away too. You'd be surprised.
They're too interested in Robloxand TikTok to care anyway.
This is true. And this is where I think they

(30:47):
should have gone the way of Super Mario Brothers because
Super Mario Brothers wasn't intended to be like this big
movie. It was meant to be a movie for
all ages. They understood that you have
people who grew up playing Marioand you have super young
generations playing the new Marios and stuff.
So they wanted to appeal to everyone and they did amazing
with it. Yeah.
And I thought Minecraft was going to do the same because I

(31:10):
thought they understood finally that there.
And I don't even think this is Mojang.
I think this is Microsoft. Yeah, I think this is Microsoft
pushing buttons and saying we need to attract kids, attract
kids, attract kids. Yep.
Because that's what big corporations do.
We need to advertise to kids. And I'm like, stop.
That's not If an adult finds a game that a kid can play, guess

(31:31):
what? That kid plays that game.
Yep. They see what the the older
generation is doing and they tryto copy that.
It's not the other way around. You've seen this over the years
though if like how many times they've added cute animals
versus actually fixing the fundamental problems with the
game. I call it the appeasing the
lowest common denominator because like you look at the
Bedrock players, I feel so bad for Bedrock players.

(31:53):
The fact that they're just now getting bundles because they had
to appease kids on their cell phones and tablets.
Like you guys had to wait years for just bundles because they
had to appease the lowest commondenominator in cell phones.
It's like, and like, again, I don't think this is a Mojang

(32:14):
thing. I think Mojang's trying their
hardest, yeah, to not have to dostuff like they're trying to
make their the best game possible.
But I think Microsoft is standing over them saying Nope,
the more devices we can put thisgame on, the more money.
Yeah, because it's all about thestore.
Yes, that's why they have no respect for Java players,
Microsoft, because they can't monetize it.
Yeah, if you were to bring a store to Java, done correctly,

(32:36):
and the people who are creating the mods for the store were the
ones getting paid for it, I'd have no problem.
Yeah. But they won't do it properly.
That's the problem. Exactly.
Yeah, there's a way of doing it,but they ain't gonna do it like
that. That's why Java developers and
stuff give them out for free. And they've got patrons.
Yeah, Yeah. I think this is a misstep.
I think there there was something there and an idea, and

(32:59):
that idea looked really good. And then, like you said, all the
other video games, movies came out.
Yeah. And they started hitting and it
became what we need to get this out Now I'm hoping that it gets
the Sonic treatment because you remember when it came out, Sonic
looked horrible. Yeah.
It was hot garbage. And then the the movie creator
said, look, we hear you. We're working on it.

(33:21):
And then they fix it. And they did a really good job
of fixing it. Yeah.
And what did, what happened? All the fans rewarded the movie
developers by going and seeing that movie.
Not once they went and saw the second one.
Yeah. And now they're going to go see
the third one. Yeah.
Because the movie developers earned the trust of the viewer,
this teaser does not earn the trust of the viewer and that

(33:43):
it's disappointing. They've got 7 months to fix
this. Yes, that's the thing.
And again, this is only a teaser.
Yep, it's a bad teaser, but the trailer could have some more and
it could explain a little bit better.
And we'll come back when the trailer's out.
We'll do an episode on the trailer, we'll look back at what
we said here. We'll see what they've improved
if they have, and we'll revisit it.

(34:03):
And then we'll go see the movie.Yep.
And I'll spend my money to go see this movie.
I'm probably going to watch it day one and then I've got to be
quiet. Yeah, because if I hear the
littlest grumble from you, I'm going to be in a bad mood
walking to the theater, and I can't have that.
I need to have unbiased opinions, Carl.
I will stay silent until you've said that you've watched it.

(34:24):
Yeah, I'm not even logging on Discord.
Should we move on to listener polls?
Yeah. Last episode we asked which of
our pet stroke animals would youmost like to see added to
Minecraft. And bit of a difference on the

(34:46):
old YouTube of the Spotify here.So we've got Spotify with nearly
40% say in hamsters. Good call Spotify people.
And then we've got 33% and 33% draw on YouTube with meerkats
and hedgehog. No one seems to want the koala.

(35:06):
Come on man. There are zero votes on both
bowls for the koala, so yeah, it's a bit of a mix across the
board on the rest of them. Hedgehogs and meerkats on
YouTube and hamsters way out in front.
Nearly 10% more than owls. But owls come in second on
Spotify, so all we can take fromthat is no one's a koala.

(35:28):
Yeah, 4 koalas. All right, before we move on to
our comments section about the Minecraft movie teaser, here's
Jimbo with a reminder of how youcan get a discount on your own

OK our first listener comment iscoming from fur trees.
They say some of it looks good but I'm not sure about the non

(36:13):
animated characters. Would be way better if they had
made them into a character and just voice them.
I kind of agree. Yeah.
Definitely for the models. The sheep looks weird, the llama
looks good. Hey Yep, the piglets look good.
We agree the blocks look like one real life texture packs.
Yep, that's what we said too. Yeah, overall I'll see it, but

(36:35):
I'm definitely worried that's that essentially hits the nail
on the head for how we feel. Yeah, and I picked these at
random, so it's not like I curated them to make us look
good on the money, though. Definitely.
I don't know if you can hear this, but there is a car outside
my window drop in the base. No.
OK, good. Someone might hear in the
background at some point, but yeah, they're just bumping.

(36:58):
Trust me man, your music is not that good.
Turn it down. OK, we're trying to record a
podcaster. Yeah, awesome. 2399 says what a
piece of hot garbage. And that is my honest opinion.
This has an A list crew. The VFX guy did Avatar, the
Batman and the Planet of the Apes movies, the cinematographer

(37:20):
was on Transformers Rise of the Beasts, and the editor did
Detective Pikachu. That's that's, that's bad,
because those were done very well.
Yeah, it's a hot take. It is.
I don't think it's a hot take here.
No, yeah. I mean, yeah, the people who
worked on this film, like if youlook into the production staff,

(37:41):
there's some really good people in there who have worked on some
really good films, and this is not their best work.
So far no, and it kind of times into your thought of it seems
rushed. Yeah, definitely does.
All right, we have Creeper. I always say it like that paper.
I don't know why, it just makes me feel good.
It says seems too corporate. They don't seem to play on the

(38:05):
nostalgia. They'll reuse the piglin thing,
which nobody actually cares about.
I would think a more personal and lonely slash emotional twist
would fit the game better. I think we're going to see that
with Jack Black's character. I think Steve's been trapped in
there for a while. They just didn't show it in the
teaser. But I suppose that's not how
Minecraft or Microsoft sees the game and tent wink wink.

(38:28):
They seem to have seen the salesstatistics and use it to prove
Minecraft as a kids game. So it needs a kids movie type
thing. Again, you're basically hitting
the nail on the head with what we said earlier.
I don't think it's as harsh as that.
I just think they see their demographic and it's wrong.
Yeah, I think their demographic should have been higher up and

(38:50):
not so down low and I think that's where they missed.
They could have made a very goodfamily film, something for
everyone in it very much. And I feel like, like they say
they're far too low down that they're supposed to target
audience. Yes, I think too many people
still think the age group for playing Minecraft is under 10,
and they don't realize that the average age group is 24.

(39:12):
Yeah, High Hopes says. I love the terrain and I'm super
excited for the movie. Like most adaptations, I'm sure
a lot of people will be disappointed, especially given
how divided and vocal parts of the community can be.
However, while I'm sure there will be issues, I've got to go
with my name and say that I havehigh hopes for this.

(39:36):
That's how we got really quiet right there, because neither
Carl or I have high hopes for this.
I I love the optimism. Yeah.
I want to be there. I need to see more.
I I really do. And high hopes is, you know,
he's been on an episode, he's one of our Discord moderators.
We've known him for a long time. He's a pretty optimistic chap.
Yep. So we, I can see where this is

(39:59):
coming from. Yep.
I I really think this could havebeen such a good movie and it
still can be. Yeah, just take seven months and
fix everything we've just talked.
But not even that is just so to go way off track here, you look
at the Snow White movie that's coming out.
Have you heard anything about that?
I've not actually. I know it's coming out but I

(40:21):
haven't heard much about it. It's it's been drunk or drugs
through the wringer for like thelast year and a half.
Basically they were going to usesmaller stature people for the
dwarfs and then one of the dwarfs got mad and said you
can't do that. You have to treat us all like
the actors. You should hire regular sized
actors to play the dwarfs at thesame time and just make them not

(40:44):
dwarfs. So Disney did that and then all
the people came out and said, yeah, that's not the story.
Like if you're going to do that movie, fine, but don't call it a
Snow White movie. Snow White movie.
The the dwarfs are a magical being and you're now taking away
that part. So in order to keep the same
actors, they've now CGI all the dwarfs and just, again, just

(41:07):
rung this movie through the ringer.
And I'm afraid this movie won't get that kind of attention for
Disney. Snow White's a big movie.
Like, that's the movie that madeDisney.
Disney. Yeah.
For everyone who doesn't know, like, that's Walt Disney's baby.
So you, you need to get a live adaption, correct?
Yeah. You got to give Disney praise

(41:28):
for trying to get it correct while also trying to be unique.
I don't feel that the Minecraft movie is going to get that,
which stinks because you can seewith Snow White, you can see
with Sonic. Sonic being the big.
Hey, look, if we listen to the fans, they will pay to go see
this movie. Yeah.
I don't know. I'm hoping so.
I didn't realize the the listener comments kept going.

(41:49):
Holy cow. Yep.
OK, so fragile, Rock says, underwhelmed.
I don't know why there is so many people in it.
And this supposedly funny bit lands flat.
The trailer looks utterly formulaic, but that's probably
not a surprise because the teasers are often made before
filming has even started. Filming's wrapped on this one.

(42:11):
Yeah, it's wrapped already. And I can't base any impression
on the movie from this, other than that there will be a movie
and it might be lame. Exactly.
We don't know what the final project is.
It might be really good, the story might be really good and
basically explain away all the doubts Carl and I had.
Yeah, it's very possible. Which is why we're only breaking
down the teaser. The teaser's bad.
The teaser's horrible. This entire episode is about the

(42:33):
teaser. We're not projecting the film
because we haven't seen it. We haven't seen an actual
trailer. We're probably going to get the
actual trailer, maybe. Minecon.
I don't think it's going to be that quick.
I think it's going to be December, January area before we
get a proper trailer. Nope, I I think we're going to
get one minecon because the movie comes out in April.
And don't forget there are movies that had their actual

(42:54):
official release trailer almost a year before the movie came
out. OK, calling it here.
That's my Minecraft live prediction.
So they have a month to fix this.
Not happening. Zulu W 12 says the world has
great graphics and looks beautiful, but that setting
looks good on any other film andit does not look like Minecraft

(43:18):
at all. And the people who acted it look
like they have been green screen.
They've green screened them in. Yep.
And the animals just look weird how they got for when in
Minecraft they don't. I think they are just trying to
make it look like real life morethan the game.
It's itself. And I agree it is very
underwhelming. Last point, it looks like a kids

(43:40):
film rather than a family one that can enjoy it for all ages,
not just kids. Yeah, pretty much.
It looks like a kids film. It could have been a family
film. You know, a little bit of adult
humor sprinkled in there that the kids won't understand.
A lot of kids films do that. Well, they already had that in
like the opening scene with the what the hell?
So it's like, hey, that's not a word kids should say.

(44:02):
I guess Jamie who brought it up in the discord saying why is the
swearing in a kids film? Because I don't think it's
supposed to be a kids film. I think they were intending it
to be a family film. But they have failed.
But they but they missed. As far as we can tell, yes.
Has your opinions of this film changed since the first time you

(44:25):
watched the trailer? Or was were you like me where I
was like way more critical than this?
This is the watered down version.
I was way more critical than this the first time.
I will actually say, watching the trailer multiple times, I
think I've watched it about 20 Times Now.
The art style grows on me more. I can't get over the trees.
Those aren't Minecraft trees. Get them out of here.

(44:46):
Yeah, but the the mob animationsand CGII think looks pretty
good. I think the pink sheep needs his
facial feature has worked on. Like I said earlier, the llama
is good, the Penguins are good. I like seeing the piglin brute
how easy it was to see that compared to the other ones.
Yeah the gas I think looks pretty cool.

(45:06):
Looks scary. The terrain in the game or in
the movie trailer looks good. It's not Minecraft, but in my
mind I'm thinking Steve's been there so long he's redone the
entire train. Maybe that's the only thing I
can kind of cope with. Maybe it'll look better on a big
IMAX screen than it does on YouTube.

(45:26):
I'm not paying to see this in IMAX.
I think IMAX costs me an extra $8.
I'm not paying to see this in IMAX.
Didn't say any other formats on the trailer, it just said IMAX.
Oh if it's only an IMAX I will wait for it to come out on
digital. Now I think they will have it in
normal screens as well, but I just mean like.
Yeah, they have to. I don't know what you have over
there, but like over here we have like Super screen, we have

(45:48):
screen X, we have 4 DX. Like any of those are not on
that trip, man. You is an international trailer
so maybe the UK trailer will have different things on it, but
I'm just hoping it's in super screen because I get that for
free and it's basically IMAX. We do have the four DX and very
strategic locations, Yeah. And then we have IMAX and
basically every theater and thenwe have standard.
I will see and standard definition.

(46:10):
I'm watching this standard film and standard.
Definition. Hey the last movie I actually
went and paid to see an IMAX wasTwisters movie OK the reboot
slash sequel to the first one. That movie was really good and I
suggest people go see it. I had so much fun during that
movie. Yeah, twisters are really good.
Turn my brain off and just have fun.

(46:31):
Yeah. And that's what the movie should
be. Yep.
I feel like with this movie, we're going to sit there and
just formulate in a podcast. I know I'm I'm contemplating
having to take a notebook in there to take notes during the
movie. Yep.
But then I'm afraid I'll be taking notes and not paying
attention to the movie so I willmiss stuff.
Yeah. I don't know bullet points.

(46:52):
Yeah, feel like that's what's going to happen with me as well.
But yeah, that is our Minecraft teaser trailer episode.
Let us know in the YouTube comments and in the Spotify

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
