Hey Friends,
Today's Tip of the Week- take a break..from social media.

Before thoughts of FOMO set in, I’m not suggesting a permanent break, think of this more of a reset.

Freeing up even 30 minutes per day allows you to be intentional in other areas of your life. I suggest having a specific “thing” to replace your scrolling. Whether reading, going for a walk, going to the gym, or dare I say it…organizing a space.

A social media detox allows you to create space for personal growth and self-reflection. Switching the focus from looking at what others are doing, to what you are doing has lasting effects.

Key Takeaways:
• Social media can be a time-consuming distraction
• Screen reports provide insight into social media usage patterns
• Setting parameters for social media use can improve productivity and enhance the quality of life
• Mindful social media use can improve mental health and wellbeing
• Social media usage habits can be shaped and changed with discipline and intentionality

Exception: Using social media for business or activism is not the same as mindless scrolling

a prompter or story to help youthink differently about the true meaning of clutter.

because that is how our show isable to grow because of you out there,

(02:12):
and we are so appreciative going totalk about something today that may or
may not be popular. I thinkpeople have an opinion about this one way
or another, but it is abouttaking a social media break. And as
I've said on this Organized Life podcastbefore on our regular episodes, I have

(02:36):
a love hate relationship with social media. I think it's great for being able
to connect with people that I don'tget to see on the daily basis.
It is great from a business perspectiveto be able to share content with all
of you, whether it's podcasts orarticles or things that we're doing that can

(02:59):
help benefit you and your lives likethat is something that I love. I
also do a ton of work inthe nonprofit charity space, and I love
being able to use social media tospread the messaging of the work that we
do with pediatric cancer research or anyother number of amazing organizations that are out

(03:19):
there. So that being said,I think there's a lot of benefits for
social media. I also know thedownside to social media. Obviously, we're
not going to talk about the toxicityof people being out there spreading fake news,
just the polarization, but how aboutjust the mindlessness of scrolling? And

(03:39):
I am the first one. Thesetips are formed each week from stuff that
either I'm experiencing in my own lifeor something that I've had a conversation with
client or a friend. And theseare everyday struggles that I'm hearing from either
myself or people in my world. And one of the things that I hear

(04:02):
from so many people is I justdon't have enough time. I don't have
enough time to do things. Andobviously we all have the same amount of
time in a day. And thisis not to lecture, this is not
to shame anybody, but every weekwe are all given if at least if
you're an Apple user, you getthat screen report that gets sent to you,

(04:25):
I think on Sundays, and itsays what your screen usage is,
and it says where you're using yourscreens. You know what apps you're using,
where are you spending your time,And it's always very eye opening to
see how much time we spend ondifferent apps. And again I understand that

(04:46):
a lot of times people use socialmedia to grow their businesses or do stuff
that they're supporting in their community orfor organizations. So again I'm not saying
it's all bad, but I thinkit's really important to be able to differentiate
and set some guidelines and parameters aroundhow and when and where we are using

(05:08):
social media. And as a parent, I am so grateful that my kids
weren't exposed at a young age theway kids are now. I think it
would totally be shaping my parenting differentlythan it was. But we need to
lead by example, folks. Andnow, if you're listening to this in

(05:29):
real time, we're entering into thesummer where for some people we're taking things
down a notch. So it's easierto have a tendency to just mindlessly scroll
more or spend more time doing thingsin a nonproductive way. And I think
it's okay to have certain pockets ofour lives where we are just pure enjoyment.

(05:54):
Not everything has to be productive movingthe needle. But when I think
about people that tell me I don'thave time to read a book, or
I don't have time to go fora walk, or I don't have time
to exercise, or I don't havetime to fill in the blank. But
we look at the twenty minutes thatwe spend in the morning or at night,
or as we're standing in the aisleonline looking at social media and really

(06:19):
saying, is this the best useof my time? Is this the way?
And it's not even the best useof my time? But is this?
Are there things that I'm missing outon that I could be doing,
that I would rather be doing, that would be bringing more value to my
life, that would be enhancing mylife in some way, shape or form.

(06:40):
And I noticed myself when I startedputting some guardrails. So I'm not
saying you have to do an actualfull on detox, right You don't have
to say like you can if youwant, Hey, I'm shutting it down
and I'm going on a hiatus fora week or a month or whatever.
You can totally do that. Buteven if you don't do something that's that

(07:00):
extremely if you say I'm going tostart some putting parameters that like I am
not going to go on social mediain the evenings, like I'm just not
going to do it, or I'minstead I'm going to read a book,
or I'm going to play a gamewith my kids, or in the mornings,
I'm going to go for a walk, or I'm going to whatever it

(07:23):
is. I keep saying reading andexercise because they are like the two things
that I never feel like I haveenough time for and so that's what I
keep gravitating too. But it doesn'thave to be that. It could be
whatever it is. It could bejournaling, it could be catching up on
the phone with a friend, orI don't know, doing a craft or
doing a meal prep or like searchingfor recipes if you enjoy cooking or gardening.

(07:46):
It could be so many different thingsthat are really enhancing the quality of
your life. I don't think anybodyhas ever said that there lives have been
truly enhanced by scrolling social media. And so when we look at how,

(08:07):
where, when and why, weare going to that as our default.
Obviously the ease of convenience it's there. So maybe for some people it means
taking those apps off of your phoneif it's not there and you can only
use it at certain times, orputting up again. You can set blocks

(08:28):
in your settings on your phone tosay I cannot access it here, or
just start practicing if you're somebody thatis self disciplined to say no, I'm
going I'm going to have this bookhere, I'm going to have a cookbook
here. I'm going to set timeaside to do this X, Y and

(08:48):
Z task at this time, andthe more you do it, and the
more that you start getting fulfillment fromthis other thing other than social media,
even if it's just for a particularseason, I think you'll realize how much
you don't miss it. Right, and there are people that you want to
see, you can intentionally go andsee what they're up to, but you

(09:11):
don't have to just sit there anddigest and consume all of this mindless content
and at the sacrifice of doing thingsthat are actually bringing value to you in
your home. So that's my challengefor you. It's something I'm going to
be working on this summer. I'mbeing really intentional about not getting having specific

(09:35):
times of day where I go onand check social media. For me,
it's a slippery slope because I needto be using it for my business as
well as for personal stuff. ButI am being very disciplined about saying I'm
checking it in the morning, I'mchecking it maybe in the afternoon, and
then maybe I'm checking it one othertime. But I'm doing it with a

(09:56):
specific time frame in mind, LikeI'm giving myself fifteen minutes, twenty minutes,
whatever that timeframe is to go incomment, engage, share whatever I
need to share and then be done. So like I'm trying to limit my
social media consumption to know more thanan hour day, whether that's an hour
in one full swoop, I preferto break it up into multiple different times

(10:20):
a day, and I'll scroll betweena couple of different apps, my personal,
my business one, and that's it. So that's my challenge. Whatever
your number is, I'm not goingto tell you it should be X amount
of time, but my goal isto do an hour day, no more
than an hour day on social media. So I'll let you know how that
goes. That's it for this week'sTip of the Week. I cannot believe

(10:43):
we are wrapping up May already. We are going to be heading into the
summer months, and I'm so excitedfor all the great things that we have
planned on this episode as well asour Thursday episodes. So if you're not
