She previously served as a Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU and directed the disability rights program at Legal Aid at Work. She played a key role in expanding protections under the Fair Employment and Housing Act and argued US Airways, Inc. v. Barnett before the U.S. Supreme Court. A recipient of the Paul G. Hearne Award, she has taught disability law at Berkeley and Hastings.
