Santiago es una mezcla entre un académico investigador y un practicante de conservación. Su formación y antecedentes están en economía ambiental y ecológica; y tiene un doctorado por la universidad de Oxford.
Desde 2010, ha colaborado con Natura y Ecosistemas Mexicanos, una ONG que se dedica a la conservación y restauración de los ecosistemas naturales de la Selva Lacandona en Chiapas.
Esta conversación es relevante por qué La Selva Lacandona es el remanente más grande de selva tropical en México, pero está bajo alta presión para su conversión, principalmente para la ganadería. Natura Mexicana desarrolla varios proyectos, incluyendo programas de Pagos por Servicios Ambientales y recuperación de especies clave en la Selva Lacandona.
