That's how you do it. Welcome back to
Thunder talk everybody. I'm Tyler F sitting with
esteem doctor Frank Schultz,
and
we got,
Arthur Ab lam in the flesh
here at Fair banks.
He
that was... Well... I felt bad because I
kinda stiff him a couple weeks ago. You're
like, hey. I'm in your town. I was

(04:19):
out of town coming back. It's like, yeah,
I'll give you a shout I when get
back. Totally didn't do it.
Man I ended up leaving early that. Oh,
you did. Okay. So it's all good. So
then he text me today Like, hey, I'm
back in town. I'm like, alright. Yes. Don't
chance to redeem myself. Don't tell me left
Early. Be like, yeah It was waiting off
your house or.

(04:39):
This is staring at that phone.
You.
No. Much too cool for that. So Yeah.
In town to do some training, And
is that what you're doing last time You're
here too? Yeah. Raining. Yep. Com training. Yep.
Yep. So what... What's been new in your
world, man You probably been all... Year all's
up to something all winter in spring and...

(05:01):
Yeah.
Currently, I just
kind of taken a different job. That's more
2 on 2 off structure. Nice. So I
can have some time off staying out with
my
family.
So I'm in town to do
ground school and then hopefully start flight trading
at the end of this week? Nice.

(05:22):
Well, that should hopefully, like, you know, that
kind of schedule should give you a little
bit more flexibility during hunt season. Absolutely. This
that's that's where you were hose. Yeah. That's
the schedule I had for 10 years, and
I loved it, you know,
2 on 2 off, 2 weeks on 2
weeks off, and then
I would take my wife and kids up
to Moose camp for, like, 10 days. And
yeah. It was not rushed. It was awesome.

(05:44):
Yeah.
And nowadays you know, flying
floats,
you're... You have to be there during move
season, you know also... Yeah.
I'm looking forward to more time with the
family.
Yeah. For sure. It's
yeah. It's funny How. Funny. How that how
that...

(06:04):
Know,
ref flying a lot of hunters. Yeah. Yeah.
We're adding up with meat from them? Yeah.
I took some. I took some
ribs from the younger was said they shot.
Right on. That were clean enough. Right? Right.
Yeah. We're... Arthur all comments on the... When
we get get the meat back. I'm always

(06:26):
proud of it. We're gonna get it back
here and get it hung up and peel
the bags off. And it's there's nothing like
that. Picking, like, a little piece of grass
off here and there. Nope. I'm just listening
to a podcast on their way over here
if somebody completely like,
I use
to only 1 person on the animal at
a time with a knife because I don't
wanna get cut
as an excuse because I'm so anal about

(06:48):
my mean. I don't want hair, any kind,
like, pieces of tundra to you them... No.
This is them saying that. And I was
like, man. That's a... Yeah. Yeah. That's solid
being in the wrong spot. Right.
Exactly.
So, yeah, that were using the that don't
cut me. As excuse for, like, that's a
eat nazi. Yeah.

(07:08):
But it real... I mean, like, you could
always end up in a shitty situation where
there's nothing you can do, but like, really,
it's not that usually that tough. You're just
like a little careful. Even late at night,
you know, just like, take a little bit
of extra time That's all it is and
extra time. It all it really is to
keep me clean.
I've been given some stuff before, then I

(07:28):
was like, yeah, you can keep that. I'm
all set.
Yeah. That or what I was I was
laugh at. I see, you know, people with
their bears that, like, the the hide... They
got it, like, stretched out skin down on
a gravel bar. And like, whoever you're pain
to flesh that? It's not be happy.
But Yeah. Did you get... Did you end

(07:49):
up getting out after seals this spring?
I went once, and we shot for, but
it wasn't
It wasn't enough I go, like, 2 or
3 times. Yeah.
I just... Between work and time off. I
just
I'm not not paying off between work and
whether I didn't have many opportunities. Yeah. Well,
you probably got, like, a maybe. And, like,

(08:11):
hear a little more... But, I think we
talked about last time
you're on the podcast a little bit but
be cool to, like, here. Because I imagine
you got, like, you gotta deal with, like,
correct, like, good water and weather conditions. Yep.
And, like, have the ice be close enough.
Yep. I mean... You have to have c
ice
and
calm calm weather.
And then when it Sunny helps too because

(08:32):
you you could see a lot more
heads in the water so you're looking at
tiny heads, you know? Yeah. Why do you
have to have C?
These they follow the C. Okay.
So, like, in the wintertime, the ice builds
it from
the north pole
towards... Right.

(08:53):
Kinda where we're at is where it stops.
Some winters it goes all the way down
to keep keep new nam.
And the ice pushes the seals down. So
we're at the very bottom,
and in March when it warms up, the
ice starts moving up fast
and we only have a few days to
get after the Series had... They're great to

(09:15):
move all 1 behind it. Yep. Okay. So
you're kinda getting them where they're concentrated on
the edge of the space serve. And so
this year was 1 of those years where
the wind push ice out
Oh, gotcha. No matter if, like, the week.
So...
Yeah. Last year, the ice was all the
way that keep moon him for a long
time it was awesome. Nice. Because you do

(09:37):
you start getting like, little potholes holes and
leads that you can go hunt and stuff
when it hangs around longer? Yeah. Pretty much
too. Keep
It's like chuck video, like that's looks so
cool, like chuck video, Mh button walrus and
stuff.
Some of the stuff he get into. Well,
when I... You know, when Roy Roy Randall

(09:57):
was alive when I working at... When I
first started working at the lodge. I mean,
that's all he did for years.
Yeah.
I don't know. Whenever you removed there our
late fifties or early sixties to 73. That's
all I did with Shots sea lines and
seals
and
a lot different around Ko.
Yeah. Now. You're not worried about ice at
all to to retain them that they're just

(10:18):
there all the time. So you're just basically.
I mean, the way he explained it to
me was he'd have... He'd get dropped off
on a rock pile, and he'd just sit
there and, you know, until they're wise to
what you're doing you just shoot them and
then the other ones will pop up, you
shoot another 1 and they all float. You
shoot them. They float You just kinda The
there's the salt is so dense that they
float. Yeah. We're at in the C bay.

(10:40):
It's mixed with a little bit of fresh
water. Mh.
And that's why we prefer to shoot them
on the sea ice.
Okay.
You you have less chance of losing them.
There we go. Right on. That makes a
ton of sense.
Yeah. Do you get... You guys the, ga
them or something when you take pop... Okay.
Yeah. Hard put them.

(11:01):
And there's certain times where
you wanna shoot or you don't shoot, you
know? Yeah.
Like, the bigger beard deals, you don't wanna
shoot them
right before they dive because they exhale. Oh,
gotcha.
So usually,
we like to shoot them when they're swimming
away.

(11:21):
Because it... When he shoot them there, they
just kinda, like it chap it here
and they float... You have they float better
more time to retrieve it. Mh nice.
It's like the grown up version of shooting
beaver in the river.
Yeah.
Or shoot them on the ice when they're
sleeping. That's the best. Yeah.
You. Sac them and then there... You don't

(11:43):
even have to worry about it. They're not
going anywhere. Yep. Right on.
So is it just beard seals? Or is
there... No.
We shoot
some spotted seals.
And then we shoot ring teal. Ring teal
only grow to be about... I don't know.

(12:04):
It's like a really big beaver. Yeah. Okay.
But the ring peels and the beard peels,
they eat a lot of k, and
I think that's why they have
better tasting oil
and then the spotted seal, they just... They
eat anything, man. I've seen them meat yellow
fin and any kinds of fish that they
can they can
get a hold of, and then beard seals.

(12:26):
I don't know too much about them,
but I know the eat k and clams.
And those are really good eating, like they
make the best dry meat.
And then with the bearded seal oil that
oil turns kind of
yellowish, like reddish. Yeah. But, like, when you
render it down. Mh. But it tastes fine.

(12:47):
And then
the ring till makes a very clear oil.
That's pretty tasty. Okay.
Yep.
No seal hunt around here.
No shit.
Here to state the obvious, I guess.
But... Yeah. Man, it's been... I don't know

(13:08):
It's I don't know about... It's probably been
busy for you. It just seems like
It seems like it's like 5 weeks away
and we're sheep hunting. And it is. Basically
Yeah. Isn't that nuts.
That just came to me this morning.
And I was like walking things take care
of. Yeah.
I walk off into the mountains,
holy shit.

(13:31):
Yeah. I mean, it comes fast every year,
but
jeez, yeah. This like filth.
Summer hit pretty quick this year.
Felt like I haven't been able to breathe.
Of course, I've, you know, been busy doing
stuff and
killing bears and whatnot. But
you've been building
Yeah,

(13:51):
nonstop every day.
Except for the last 3.
I finally got the roof on and took
off.
Went the cabin.
Yeah.
Cobra recuperate.
Yeah it was pretty tall roof. Like,
I hadn't... I hadn't worked a real job
in a few years and Over there to
help hunt hand, like, sheets plywood up right
from the second floor up through the raptor
so he can cheat it.

(14:12):
And I'm like, man. I freaking don't like
extension ladders anymore than I used to.
Yeah.
No. I don't like groups anymore either.
That was...
I don't know. 10 years ago I to
run right down to the edge of that
thing and been, like, leaned over over the
edge
bang the drip edge on with roof and

(14:33):
nails and
man, I got, like, 3 feet away from
the peak. Start like, we're gonna need a
lift, to start getting woo
know about Woo. I'm just like, man, it's
a long way down, like,
10:15 years ago, I might be like, I
could probably bounce. And be okay. Now I'm
like, man, I didn't probably break a leg.
All her bone something.
Yeah. Well, you were talking about going... When

(14:55):
was it... You went snowboarding again? Gu you
Tal? Yeah. It was a few years ago.
In Es the last time I had been
on this snow award was here in Fair
ranks or Moose Mountain when I was 10
years old. Yeah. I had been
10:15
years since
And, yeah. I just... I wrecked myself dude,

(15:16):
like, I could log for 2 days.
Yeah. Well, I hurt myself. Like, I just
can't even hardly get out of bed. I
hurting myself. I
bait so hunt with my dad.
Just me and my dad and we
shot... He shot this. He shot a black
bear was bow and we

(15:36):
went not found it and
I mean, it was kinda of my, like,
Was telling you, like, I probably... I should've
just smoked that G. It was, like, my
my good opportunity for the season.
We so briefly anyway. He shoots this bear
runs off.
We go find it and they're, like, let's
go grab that bear and drag it back
to the boat.
And this is the spot where Frank had

(15:57):
to shoot the bear in the black bear
in the mouth for like 10 feet.
At high level. So, like, Steep Cut bank.
Wow.
This is... Yeah. That was a few years
ago, but... That's a hard spot to get
because you're coming out of the boat,
up a bank and, like,
as you're clearing the bank, the top of
the... You're on... You're in the bait pile
basically. I mean, we moved it back, like,

(16:18):
15 yards, but you're still right. There doesn't
matter.
It's not an ideal spot.
And I even intended to bring, like, a
little shovel tool or something to carve some
steps. You know, and forgot, so I we'd
kinda, like, half ass did it with a
hatch it.
And,
anyway, he shoots his bear this black bear
and That was the first time that bear

(16:39):
had been to the bait, and we like,
climb up in the stand Is it just
been a big g in a sal
in, like, 20 minutes. I'm like, dad there's
a huge bear cup. There's a huge black
bear coming, and I took him while. He's
a real nervous, but shot the bear thing
ran off died, and
we found it and was, like, let's go
drag that bare back
and then get back in the trees, and

(17:00):
then hopefully those g will come. Took like,
3 steps back up into the woods and
those g came like, running in. Wow.
And I'm
I'm like, well, there's those g sleeves like,
just talking to my dad. You're staying there
up against this cut bank, you know, with
I had my 03:38, and I wanted to
shoot 1 of the 6 5 again, and
my first thought was, like,
which, you know, what whatever. III have no

(17:22):
1 to blame but myself if I wanna
whine about not shooting G bear
because I was like, oh, man, my other
rifles in the boat.
And,
but they can't came running in and
he's running around, like, kinda became aware of
us. I thought he was gonna try to
run us off because like, they don't know
what you are. Right. And he, like, runs
this, you know, runs to the right,

(17:43):
and then turns around goes back, stands up
on all on his hi legs. I'm like,
wow. That bears. Big.
And
and I had told my dad as soon
as they they showed up I like, well,
you might well go down to the boat
and get that of the right retrieve that
other their gun because you don't have 1.
Yeah. And,
he was close I mean, like, 15 yards
away the whole time. So I was, like,

(18:04):
figured and he came back around to the
left. I thought he was... Just trying to
get around this log pile and was gonna
run... I was just close enough that I
was gonna wait until he was lined up
on me, and then just shoot him in
the head.
Because at that point, if they start... You
know, I shoot them body shooting them, and
they start spinning around or whatever. Like, I
don't have anywhere to run
or or maneuver.
And

(18:24):
You can get down that bank quick. Yeah
real quick. Right the water right into water.
But then he ran off, he ended running
off and... We went got the bear,
and I was, like, going down to the
boat to get something and slipped,
grabbed older
like with my good arm, when my
my good shoulder and

(18:45):
just went kept sliding and stretched my lat
must, like, tore something in my lap muscle.
Instantly, I was just, like,
crippled up from that, and then we ended
up getting the bear on the boat, and
I was just
fl just
just so pathetic trying to skin that bear
that night because I couldn't pull. I couldn't
pull with my left hand. Right?
And I'm thinking like, man. I hope I

(19:07):
hope Can climb a tree tomorrow.
And I end up being able to. I
mean, it was really sore for a long
time, but,
can
Yeah.
Just can't even get of, like,
hurt myself left and right. And that dates
has to add some
They see they come in there too and
they see the boat and they stop, and

(19:27):
they like, look at the boat and they
look at the bait, and they look back
at the boat and they'll turn around and
walk off.
They're not gonna go... They just like, go
back and then approach it to where they
don't see the bow yeah, and come right
and eat out of the bait anyhow.
Yeah. He was... And That was a 7
foot barrels good bear.
He came. Initially, all I could see was

(19:48):
his head like, through a... Little hole in
the trees. I just happen to look up
and see him coming down the bank
from I'm on the left side. Yeah. On
the left side. And... Because we can... We
moved changed trees for the tree stands. That's
why we moved the bait was because the
tree that we'd been hanging stands in was
like lean and real bad. Well, it's I
mean, the river was how high. Into that.
Up into the woods the last year, which

(20:10):
and I'm sure it ate away at that
bank, and that tricks... That tree was... Perfect.
Yeah. For 2 people to sit in and
it had just enough lean where you could
be, like, lean to get 2 guys could
be leaned against the tree perfectly and 2
tree stan sitting like that. Yeah. And it
was really nice. And when you said that
I was like, then I said something to
Rob and Rob's was like, well, yeah. The
river was, like, 20 feet higher last year

(20:30):
than it is this year.
Yeah.
Going up some of those creek, it was
like, you could see
water line like, way up, it was pretty
impressive. I don't know. Was that in the
spring time or spring? Yeah. Spring flood? Yep.
Yeah. Do you guys get much much ice
jamming out on the cusp swim? Yeah. It

(20:53):
actually jammed
bright below Bethel this year.
And from Bethel 2 sack, which is about
30 miles flooded
both on the east and west side of
the Cusco. And way up in the tundra
g. I've never seen that before.
And it flooded so I had bethel that,
we were pulling logs with the lu. Yeah.

(21:13):
Through the ice.
When we were done in the evening, we
just bought right to my buddy Mo how.
Like serious roads and stuff is is pretty.
Because watching your stuff, like, that's in your
firewood time. Right? During break up when, like,
bunch of logs are come. That's the easiest
way to get firewood because it's... I mean,
it's just right there, you know Yeah.
I

(21:34):
I used to get firewood with the snow
machine, pulling a sled, but, yeah. It's so
much wear and tear on your machine. Yeah.
And you can only get a it's like,
no you can't get that much. Right? Each
trip. Yep. And we pulled,
like, 20...
Logs that were over 60 feet.
So. Yeah. You could pull them pretty easy
with the boat. But Yeah. Kind Maybe I

(21:57):
pulled them through the ice.
Yeah. 1 of 1 of the logs we
got was 84 feet long piece.
And Had the come swift river. Yeah. It
was it was a good piece of wood
there.
That tree is probably, like, 300 years old
something
chop it up and burn it. On its
on its way out, do
do those logs end up eating through your

(22:17):
chains pretty good You get a bunch of
silk in them or not too bad? Yeah.
Some some of them are filled with silk
sand and rocks.
But we usually,
we'll pull them up by the house
and then cut them in sections and then
load them up with the forklift.
Nice.
Then let them dry for a year or
2,

(22:40):
what?
And Yeah. It was a good good spring
flood this year is couple.
Does anybody have a mill Do you put
any of that stuff on a mill make
people that have meals. Yeah. Yeah.
My my buddy Brent just got 1 from
the
school and he's been milling logs. Nice.

(23:00):
Yeah Well, because that was out at the
lodge, like a lot of the... I don't
know if all, but a lot of that
lumber was from just drift stuff. Right? Well,
everything like you we spend all spring bear
season.
You're going around looking at beaches for bears.
And the beaches that they like to be
on or, like, north facing they get weather
and get stuff washing up on them. So
you end up with logs you end up

(23:21):
with, like,
There's no...
All you have on a Fo and
Cardiac is Spruce. Yep. So you end up
with stuff from Southeast. You end up with
red cedar and fur. We'll wash up on
the beaches. So when you're looking for bears,
unbeknownst to the clients, you're also looking for
wood to mill to use for project at

(23:42):
the... Yeah. And then we'll just be like,
okay. Well, there's...
Remember that there's logs on this beach. Remember
there's logs on that beach and won't go
back when there's a super high tide.
And we'll yank everything and we normally like,
do a trip where it takes a whole
day to go and we just go Beach
to beach to Beach and you pull everything
out and get it floating,
and you raft together, like, 5 or 6
logs and just leave them tied together and

(24:02):
go to another beach, get a bunch. And
then by the end of the day, you're
towing like,
a quarter mile of logs. 5 or 6,
5 or 6. 5 or 6 You just
keep tie and stuff, tying and stuff, tying
and stuff and drag it all back, and
it's like a entire day process to, like,
get everything there.
And then there's a a little bay that
we'd pull the stuff up into
because we're doing it on a super high

(24:23):
tide. Yeah. And then it we tied up
at high tide and so the... And then
it's like, you got a month basically of
the stuff being above tide line,
to be able to deal with it and
figure out where you wanna put it and
to pull it up to the sawmill and
sort stuff out as far as far... What's
gonna be firewood, what's gonna be we're gonna
use for
structural pieces of wood or what we're gonna

(24:44):
use for finished wood or whatever, and you
get a good idea. You start looking at
logs and then running them through the mill.
Can be like that's gonna be a nice
piece of wood. Like, I can tell by
looking at that that it's gonna have good
characteristics for finish wood or whatever, you know?
So... But you gotta look at them and
you gotta, like, spend a lot of time
with the hammer like knocking because they've been

(25:04):
on the beach, just like, rolling around in
a gravel just pack with rocks.
So you, like, spend a lot of time
with the hammer, like, knocking rocks and pieces
of stuff out of the out of all
the trees.
Because you hit that saw blade, you know,
it's on the mill 5T6 teeth on 1
blade and 3 teeth on
2 different blades of 6 more. So it's

(25:25):
11 total teeth.
6 of them are a quarter inch
and 5. It's like our 3 take teens.
Yeah.
And
you hit a rock with 1 of them,
and
dirty expensive, and you only have so many
of them and you got water off somewhere,
and it's, like, you don't wanna hit rocks.

(25:46):
Right
worth extra time. Yeah. For sure. A little
different than just a chainsaw chain. Right. Yeah.
Yep, And you if you hit something substantial.
It'll throw those teeth too, and then they're
just gone, you can't even, you know, tune
them back up. They're totally gone.
But, yeah,

(26:08):
Login in with boats is fun.
I like it.
Yeah. It can get kinda sketchy, but it's
it's worth it for me. You get a
lot more
through the ice then you do with the
snow machine for sure. Right on. Plus if,
you know, I save my snow machine for
chasing Wolves. Yeah.

(26:29):
There's a guy, like, 1 time I'm working
for cal... Or for Bill W bought skin
and skin and stuff. Made a lot of
guys, there's a guy for, I think from
Cal tag. That came in there Was talking
about a pair of wolves. He run down.
He's like had a brand new scan. It's
like, by the end of it, it was
packed of leaves and on fire. He's like,
but I got the
Straight.

(26:49):
I got them both. 1 was a blue
1 or something like that. Nice. The, sucks
didn't suffice the scan. Yeah. Did you guys
get what... Like, you have any decent snow
out there this year. God we had...
The best snow we had in a long
time, but it was a lot of days
it was overcast. Oh, and you can't do
much with, you know, when it's overcast.

(27:10):
Because, I mean, you could have
a lot of snow or
a lot of snow drifts.
Can't see them. Yeah. Because it's flat light
gets a little dangerous when you're going.
Dangerous. I mean, I've I've had
many close calls. 1 time, I was... I
left Bethel was clear. I got up to
the Yukon.
And a cloud leader just, like set over.

(27:33):
Yeah. And I was so excited. I was
by myself. I was
with the 600 days going full throttle, I'll
do, like, 60.
And all of a sudden I hit this
8 foot jump, and I probably flew, like,
40 feet
just boom I was like oh my gosh.
And I was waiting. I was in the
air just waiting to come down, like, my
is gonna break.

(27:54):
And I came down, and I was like,
whoa, it didn't break. You know? And after
that, III put my 600 days in eco
mode.
Slower down. Find myself, I better take it
easy though.
You know it's pretty bad when you had
cap time to think about that like, oh,
wait you're waiting to hit the
Oh. Yep. And then I I ended up

(28:16):
on a
really big wolverine. The and
he went in a small pat of trees
like,
spruce. Yeah. And
he went in. I went around.
By the time I made a 03:60, he
came out in my tracks,
and
I I went around again, and he booked

(28:37):
it straight to the, like, to the thick
Timber.
So I was within 90 seconds of
being able to see him, but oh, man.
He was just... He he was a smart
1 too. He like, he was huge. I
swear his pause were like that big.
I'm not even kidding. And that's the fastest
will I'd ever been after.
And we'll aren't that fast. Yeah. They just

(28:59):
keep going. It seems like, yep.
Yep. Olden and wiser or do you think
like, it Chased him before? Oh, everything.
Yeah.
Seen won't firm him to come back out
on your tracks where he can run faster
too, probably. Yep.
Like... Yeah.

(29:19):
Seen that where wolves don't wanna get off
the trail because they can't... Because they know
they can't run fast in the dark snow.
And I've seen them. Those wolves. Dipped right
off and watch me go by on my
sled. Oh, interesting they stand that they duct
in there to only about 15 feet off
the trail that I was on. And when
I had finished running my trap line and
came back.

(29:39):
I was like,
I just was through here,
like 2 hours ago, And these tracks weren't
here. So then, of course, I get off.
And I'm like, those bastards they were running
up the trail heard me coming, and they
just went droop and jumped in and watch
me ride by. Yep.
Of people's like watching
a lot of critters do stuff like that
like moose, you know, guys like here putt

(30:00):
along the 4 wheeler and you know, big
bull moose just lays down, lets them go
right by and gets back up, and keeps
doing their thing.
I mean, a lot of times that stuff.
It's like it doesn't doesn't
terrify them, you know, what what our are,
like,
our
unfortunate moves on a couple years. Go we'd,

(30:21):
like, just bolt pop the axle on and
broke the axle on the 4 wheeler. Yeah.
And I'm like, going to set the grapple
hook, and I'm like,
There's a bold moose right there. Just like
walk faster the season. It comes coming day
the season was coming to us like hammer
and on the
banging on stuff and
Came right down. Of course, both rifles are
strapped bungee down in bags

(30:43):
under, like, Yeah. In, like, not in the
canoe. They're were in the canoe behind the
4 wheeler and... Because of course, by the
time I sort of noise and not, like,
last day, the season tail between our legs,
not By the time I had the rifle
in my hand and was standing up on
the back of the 4 wheel or you're
like, well, it's gone no. Know. It's like,
what would
fuck want me to do.

(31:07):
Yeah. At 1 time, I
I shot a brown bear
and a moose on the same day up
the quit,
and
I had
kinda stockpile everything on the river To run
up this Johnson Creek to
make trips because so it was skinny water.
And when I got back to the stockpile,

(31:30):
good. Yeah. I'll take 1. Doing 1 of
these shirt. Yep. Thanks.
I was
trying to trying to cut as multimeter as
I can.
So I washed the boat out and took
splashing water there, You know, to get all
the sand and... Yeah.
All the mud out.
And I started bailing the boat out with
the gallon oil

(31:51):
container, plastic the container.
And it was me making that scraping sound.
Right? Oh, no. And I had this moose
on the on the beach.
The 1 I had shot in this 45
venture came out, and it was, like, 20
feet away he was pissed. You, like, I
as rolled forward,
And I'm like, hey, dude I'm I'm here,

(32:11):
You know, like, trying to get it to
go away. He would not get away.
Eventually, at... You know, he's closing in from
20 feet. I pushed the boat in the
water
and took off God on a step and
basically chase the lane with the boat. Yeah.
And he only ran a hundred feet
into the next pet of willow, and he
stood there for the, like, the neck for
the press of the time I was loading

(32:32):
them
the meat the boat
jeez. But shit just like,
I'm literally yelling At, and he won't he
won't leave. No. But I was gonna have
to
shoot it.
It's always once you got 1. And we
you don't when you don't want
Yeah.

(32:53):
Yeah. That's interesting for sure.
Yeah. Some of the noise banging. I mean,
a couple years ago, just banging tent pulls
in. Yeah. Hammer tent with a hammer. Yeah.
That was a big. Oh, I mid cam
right Right to camp right in.
Yeah. I would like to run into him
again.

(33:15):
Yeah know That was a nice moose. Both
the bulls we saw in that trip. Pretty
nice. Yep. I mean, it was a little
aside from that. It was a little slow,
but, like... Yeah. Pretty much always have got
got chances in killing 2 bulls. Yeah.
I'm trying not to like get too excited
about move season and overlook sheep seasoning.

(33:35):
Yeah.
Are you pretty this pretty laid up with
work for the summer? Or you... You were
doing some fishing. You're getting some fish staff?
We put fish up,
right now,
doing this ground school thing, and then I
start fl right after, and I'm supposed to

(33:56):
start shift
July fifteenth. So
I might be
at work this whole month.
What Yeah. But then once you're on your
shift, you should, like, be Then I'll have
3 weeks off every month. That's.
That's I'm looking forward to that. Pretty sweet
schedule. Yeah. My had... Like I said earlier,
I had that for 10 years, and it's

(34:17):
the best. Like,
you work hard for 2 weeks and you
have 2 weeks of play.
It's amazing. Nice.
And that'll be, like, a bunch of different
plate. Yeah. So
because you... You're already, like, you Mean you
got a cub, and then you're flying cubs
and beaver and stuff like that from your
old job. Yeah. So

(34:38):
at my old job, I flew all those
like, I he called bush planes, but this
new job I'm flying a
Pc 12.
Yeah. Didn't med back stuff, so
Is it a lot of standby stuff? Probably
yeah for sure a lot of standby and
then on my off time, I can go
play in my personal plane, you know. Yeah.
I'm looking forward to that.

(35:00):
Yeah. That'll be cool, man. Yeah. That's a
odd situation when you're doing, like, meta stuff
and when you're like,
would somebody just go ahead and get hurt.
I hate something to do here. Now.
Just hit refresh on that
enrich Sos screen.

(35:24):
Oh, man.
But
yeah. Pretty... You have Yeah. You haven't been
doing too much this spring get, but build
the rental cabin. Yeah. I also thinking it's
speaking of noise. It was it was pretty
funny. The
the big the real big berry I killed
this spring was
came run over.

(35:45):
We had
real remote bait and we show it, like,
my dad and I went and we had
3 bates out
and checking them. And they were both... They're
all except for the 1 with the G
bears. Like that, it had G on it.
For a few days, but the re... The
other 2, like, had just barely started getting
hit. So we're kinda like fuck because it's
nice when they're just getting
cl by bears and you go in there

(36:07):
in clean house, but you got T323
bears.
You don't even go look for Just like,
oh, that 1, mark that 1 shoot an
1 that come We're in that way. We're
in that way.
It
so, like, we've...
For that was the first night, we killed
that bear, and then
we had, like, that was the farthest

(36:29):
away from camp.
So we checked the other 2 on the
way and they're, like, the next the next
day, Gotta, you know, you're up to, like,
04:00 in the morning.
So
sleep in, then dealt with his bear.
Had already scanned it and hung up the
meat, but I like flashed and got got
his height on the salt.
Excuse me. And

(36:49):
we ended up that afternoon evening. Like, let's
check these baits and we'd left our tree
stands at that 1. So it's like, well,
if nothing's happened at that 1, we'll move
them move the stands because we got
like,
it's pretty slick setup up these well, the
millennium stands, but just pretty easy stands to
move and hang on trees and
that's what we're just talking about is you

(37:10):
just get the blocks. The... Yeah. And I
got of like, at each spot, then just
take the actual stand and hanging it off
You. Run up the tree and stick it
in the block. Nice. But
so we went up
kinda got late that night. We went up
and
that nothing had been back there. So moved
the stands back to the next bait down,
didn't see anything

(37:30):
from, like, 08:30 to midnight. And I was
looking at pictures picture. I'm like, man, All
these freaking bears are coming in at, like,
in the... During the day in the afternoon,
early evening.
I was like, it was like, only my
midnight, but I was like, let's get out
of here.
And
come back at like, 01:00 in the afternoon.
Sit for a few hours here because we
had 3 nights to haunt. Like, let's sit

(37:52):
sit a few hours here, then if we
don't see anything or whatever we'll move or
kill 1 we'll move to the other spot
because it was starting to get bears on
it too.
And
so we do that. And I, like, I'm
driving the boat. We pull up on this
creek, and we...
It's like
15 yards uphill, like, up a pretty
not steep bank, but a slope bank and

(38:12):
then, like, 20 yards over to the bait.
And I pull up, like, just, like, touch
the bank with the
boat my dad's in front, he was gonna
tie it off.
And I was like, oh, shit. I see
this huge freaking Blackberry had pop up over
the bank like, right up above us. I
was like, get down down.
Grab this rifle, and that... That's like a

(38:32):
whole another story this rifle I have yet
to right review up for, but
like a new new model,
super, you know, like, it hasn't been released
yet, and I had trouble with it on
the range like, feeding under
if I had 4 rounds and it A65I
had trouble of feeding if I had 4
rounds in the magazine, and I thought 3

(38:52):
rounds seemed to work fine. So that's what
I had.
Sure. Shit. Go, like, jammed that just stick
that thing hard, man like it jammed. Wow.
And luckily, I knew what was going on.
So I did, like, drop all the all
the bullets out. Grab 1, stuck it in
and, like, shot that barrett in the chest
just to he was, like, getting nervous because
all I could see is from his bottom
of his chest his head.

(39:14):
And
yeah, he ran off and died and end
up being, like,
almost the biggest black Have I've ever killed.
Nice.
Some people don't believe me, but he was
7 foot 7,
like 19 and
3 sixteenth skull.
To being mike bear. Was huge. Like,
should be... I mean, aside from, like, just

(39:36):
getting lucky and killing a frequent 1 when
I was a kid when I was 18,
but just a massive bear. But we
dragged him back to the boat and
and had my dad, like, power the boat
into the bank to drag him on the
bow and
it's like, well, let's, like... This is like
01:00 in the afternoon.
At hindsight, it was the first time he'd

(39:57):
even been to the bait.
At all. And had been there for like,
20 minutes and heard the boat and came
running over to sea like, what? They got
the trail camp pictures of him, like, leaving
to go see what voice was.
And
similar thing happened the day before with a
G bear in there, but wasn't till, like,
we actually walked up there that I saw

(40:18):
his head pop up. I'm like,
we gotta back up a little bit dead
because he's coming over to see what what
just made that noise and I don't have
room. Now it was in the middle of
the day. That was the middle of the
day too. So
we go, like, grab this
start taking stands down and we make, like,
a trip back to the boat, my dad's
in front of me. And I get down
there, and he's, like, looking confused, and I

(40:39):
look and the boat not where the boat
supposed to be. They look over and it's,
like, out in the middle of the creek
floating down? Oh, no. I'm like, did you
tie the boat? He's like, no. Yeah. Un
tied Un tied it through the rope
kicked it off. And I see the rope
on the tree still. I was like, oh,
because you had 1 of those spring, like,
cara

(40:59):
type
spring
snap links to clip the bow line on?
No good. And 1 other time when I
kid like I had that happen where you
power into the bank and the bank, like,
pops that clip off,
and then the boat just floats away.
And you're lucky you weren't out of, like,
where you're off sitting for 3 hours somewhere.
Very lucky. Yeah. So what did you do,

(41:19):
Did he swim after the. I'd just swim
out to the boat. Yeah.
I had to run down to the bank
and stripped down my underwear and swim out
there,
and then my fat ass I couldn't give
myself into boat. And Had hurt myself, the
night before so was even more crippled up,
Like, just like, a be blue trying to,
like, roll myself in that boat couldn't do
it. So I had to
I had to grab the bow and and

(41:41):
kick my way over the bank.
Hindsight
I've told them I've told him Hunt to
get boats when he when you can't get
over the edge,
you reach up and drop the engine and
stand on the back... On the lower unit
lower unit and you climb right into the
back easily.
Someone like a swim deck. Yeah. So someone
was telling me you get up there and
you could get mount, like, stand on the

(42:02):
lower unit, bear hug that thing use your
electric room to live you.
Yeah. In the situations that I've had to
do it.
And it's always up. So you gotta reach
up and... Trim it down. Trim it down
to get it so then you can get
on that. Because I truck and then I
gave it all I had. I got 1
point on the side. I I, like, got

(42:22):
my heel hooked over it, but just must've
an been empathetic man. I tried I couldn't
check couldn't do it he. Couldn't hear dad's
up there laughing. And he's like, he doesn't
even know that I un clipped that on
purpose.
No.
But yeah, no harm done at least yeah,
just lucky and then it's like, yeah, not
ever. Because that's why I use a just
a quick link on my boat that you

(42:44):
can thread closed and it's not gonna come
undone.
The layer of natural lock,
that natural lock tight, some rust on there.
Yeah.
That time, Jordan and I went to dear
Hunting.
That was in
He's to end of August,
and we left from the lodge. We took
a
28
foot c sport with the raf for the

(43:06):
sea sport. And we went over and we
were gonna hike up, like, 3 miles up
up into the Alpine where the deer were
at that time of year.
Was this like, august?
Is is in August. Yeah. So we
go over,
anchor up the boat, and it's kinda like
it's protected
but it's not... I don't know It's hard
to explain it It gets real deep in

(43:27):
your, like, in close to the shore where
we anchor up the boat. And then we
paddle in a little raft.
Pull that thing up in the woods and
leave and hike up.
We came out of the tree line
And I turned around a look, and I
was like,
is that where we left that boat and
had started blowing,
and Jordan turns around. And he's like,

(43:49):
I don't think so. And I was like,
we need to start running
down
right now because we're like, we've rate... We
have V radios, but
the only option would be to call the
coast guard because where we were. There's a
mountain between us and the lodge to communicate
and nobody else was out and boats. Like,
if there had Had been people out fishing,
from the lodge I could've have called them
on handheld.

(44:10):
I mean, like, come get me. I think
the only thing that saved us was
how much anchor line had out and it
was dragging through kelp and shit. Flowing it
down. But it was blowing out into the
Gulf of Alaska right out of this bay,
like, headed.
So we run down and we gotten that
little
sci. I couldn't even, like, move for 3
days after that.
We... I was like,

(44:31):
we'll leave our backpacks. We'll leave everything. So
it's just us in here. And I was
like, I'll pat on the right, you paddle
on the left. And when you feel like
your arms are gonna fall off,
we'll just switch. And then you'll be pat
on the on your right side, and I'll
be pat on my left side, and we
just, like, took us like an hour, and
I was like, we're just bare slowly

(44:51):
gaining on the boat as it's blown, everything.
So we're, like, paddle after it. It's blowing
out into the gulf of Alaska and we're
just like,
Come on. Come on. Come on. And it
was just because
wind randomly picked up, and we had it
anchored in a rock pile, but it just
didn't. It just didn't... It wasn't. You know,
we
got the anchor out, put a ton of

(45:12):
scope out, back down on it, and I'm
like, okay. It's solid and I've never had
that happen before, but
lesson learned. That shit happens, you know? And
there's...
I shit. Scares dragon through that dragon through
kelp, I think is what
the anchor had when we finally got in
the boat and pulled the anchor.
There was so much kelp that was caught

(45:34):
in the anchor line and, like, packed up
on the anchor. That had... Just like, slowed
it It was, like, pulled way out, scoped
way out. Yeah.
It's kinda working as a somewhat of a
sea anchor.
Yeah. But what a shitty feeling when you're
standing and you look down, you're like, that's
not where we put the boat as it?
And he was just, like, looked at... Did
you drop your packs?

(45:54):
No. We took our packs all the way
down to the to the beach because we
were, like, shit 3 miles away from the...
But... And we had just climbed up, like,
super steep. So
go going down, it was fast, like, not
a big deal. Going down, but still, it's
like, soon as you run into the woods,
you're like, you can't see the boat until

(46:15):
you come out on the beach, and you
got a ding to jump in You you
no idea going and you hope you can
still see it. But my
hold up was...
I was like, well, once we get out
here, if we're, like, we're fucked, we can't
catch it. I'll get on Channel 16. I'll
call the Coast guard and be like, hey.
Can you relay a message to the lodge
and tell somebody to come with a boat
and I lost the tell him I lost

(46:36):
the boat. Yeah.
But that didn't have to happen. So we
waited, like, 2 days and we're were like,
so,
It's like a lot of narrow misses have
been the the... Yeah, I don't have to
fortunately be told. Yeah.
It's nice if I can tell the story
and somebody else

(46:57):
goes the extra mile. I don't know what
else you could have done in a situation
like that to anchor the boat up better
because
we found a rock pile to put the
anchor in, which is, like,
you know, how you do it to get
it so that you know it's gonna stay.
Yeah.
And it's the same thing I done tons
of times. And just for some reason, it
wasn't... It wasn't hung up good enough. In
right spot, you know?

(47:21):
My sister lodge just bought a sea sport.
Yeah. Yeah. And I think it's like a
25 foot. K. It's gonna
on the 02:50 on the back. Nice.
And I've never driven a boat that big
and
I mean, it it was
It was good,
but
you get a little bit of waves and

(47:42):
it wants to list
1 way. Mh. And
we trimmed tabs trimmed tabs with the indicator.
Yep. But even still, like, I guess I'm
just learning how to drive that thing and
those both are rock a lot. Yeah. They're...
That's a big big deep v haul in
those things. They're really good both. I mean,
I've been in that 28 Sea sport and
shit that I was just like, Won't they

(48:02):
are with variable like, even if they were...
Like, they're just still right writing. They'll write
themselves. Yeah. They'll go all the way over.
Those ones. That's that's just how they write
on. Like, they're... Yeah. Yep. Not a stable,
vote at all, but you can the design
of that hall that real deep v like
that is you can put those things in
some shitty weather. And they're and they do

(48:24):
good.
But trim tabs are crucial. For those for
those things, for sure.
Do have them where you can, like, remotely
adjust each app up and down to. Yeah.
Yeah. She had some switches in there without
the indicator light. So I he stopped that
switch and that was driving is kinda cool
like you just start listing when way and

(48:44):
push down or up on.
Yep.
All works out really. Needed more. I guess.
It's nice it has an outboard. Those boats.
The 1 got switched, I think they got
rid of
a couple of them, but
that 28
got switched to honda 02:50 on it, but
they all had volvo pent in them

(49:06):
and those things suck.
You got that dog house in the back.
So the whole engine is, like, in the
way of where you wanna... Where you want
like,
doing anything in the boat. It's right in
the way.
And
then you gotta, you know, those volvo pent
had, like a it's like a twin prop.
Deal and there were a problem. There's always

(49:27):
problems. So it's, like, anytime you went in,
you sucked up a little bit of seaweed
or anything.
That... Yeah. It was something got plugged up
and overheated and it's always plugged up and
overheating when you're, like, shit. We're getting get
blown into a pile of rock somewhere something
that it's never a convenient situation, you know?
Because even the outboard you get them like,

(49:47):
hot from seaweed but things just stop and
b, like, reverse pull it off exactly. Yeah.
So... Yeah. You guys run props mostly down
there in Bethel? Bethel? Yeah.
Yep. But you go up the correct like
qui look or keys are all you wanna
wanna a ji boat.
So I've got

(50:09):
board Jet, which is awesome, but I'm gonna
sell it because I really have eased for
an
or the valley.
Yeah. We move. I can't see I regret...
Like, I mean,
I'd have a little boat, but I kinda
like outboard.
And those like that murray. I mean, If
you see were board? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I've

(50:31):
driven, like, the sport Johns, like the Opt
max is a little bit.
Up in skinny water? Yeah. Scared. And you
still prefer an outboard?
Yeah. I mean, III
can't believe you're you have an with this
console.
Like.
I feel lot safer with the tilt handle.
You like to tell really hundred percent. Yeah.
Interesting. Well, you do get a fat. You

(50:52):
do get faster spots with the tiller for
sure. And you can turn so tight up
in them... It put any water with the
tiller. I mean I guess I don't I
don't really run too much super super skinny
stuff.
Boy.
Recent the recent years. This spring. Does this
spring yeah... It was freaking matter where you
go. It was pretty like this this pretty
many everywhere. Holy shit. It's finally. Shit has

(51:13):
come up. But I mean, that's just how
I got that boat and,
you know, with the console,
and I had bought it, like, old 2
stroke 35
horse Johnson
the 2 bang? 2 bang Yep. Oh, that
thing. I liked... I finally got to where
I could fix basically anything that wasn't catastrophic.
Yeah. With that motor, and then it basically

(51:34):
did just it was catastrophic catastrophic dropping again.
Which the guy... Did I tell you the
guy? So you were there when we were,
like, pulling out from going moose something 1
time and gave it. And you told that
I saw You know. There's was another guy
with pulling out a boat that had... And
I was like, hey, I've got. I feel
like I listened to this on a podcast
Probably have because I usually... I don't I
don't do enough that, so I just have

(51:54):
to repeat myself over
tell the same stories.
Bloody finally contact you. Yeah. Like, 2 years
later. He's like, you still got that. I
was like, this is my recently. Yeah. Like,
they used the last year. Serious. Yeah. It's
like, you still got... Because I was like,
here's my number, man, if you want, I've
got 1 of those that, you know, like
it's got, like, like, all the jet parts

(52:14):
are in really good shape, you know, like,
you just use it for parts. Because those
motors are not that common, and I saw
he had 1,
and
Yeah. Like, 2 years later. I was like,
no, man. I took that thing to the
dump.
Yeah. You know I was like, I just
finally, like, 1 day had enough. I was
like, I just gotta get rid of that
thing. Yeah. If you move something for like,
the fourth time. Yeah. Think. I'm done with

(52:35):
more. It's not. It's not
I'm
I'm kind of a hoard with some things,
but I'm not the hoard that's like,
don't tell anyone.
I got I got a hundred thousand dollars
and in these woods way stop on here.
I got a situation. I'm dealing with like
that not me personally, but
Yeah. I'm dealing with a

(52:57):
situation. Yeah.
If you only knew like, yeah. Yeah. It's
like comes to the upstairs still here living
living in sham and then, like, living an
old truck and then
I got a half million dollars worth of
stuff.
Back back in the woods here. Yeah.
But tell anybody. Don't tell anybody.

(53:20):
Yeah. I don't know if that engine that
I have on my boat seems to be
pretty good. Not f wood. I like that
thing.
Yeah. Because that's a 01:15.
01:15 Johnson. Yeah. 97.
Yeah.
To. Mean as long as like got good
compression and all that stuff, they're good motors.
Yeah.
I do like that mercury. He Arthur complimented

(53:41):
my mercury.
Yeah. Those things are awesome. I like that
motor.
I like to know now.
I like that I've put that boat
to the test.
And I know that
when I do stick that thing, it's gonna
be bad. Yeah It's gonna be a long
way from the water.

(54:02):
Yeah because it'll go through absolutely no water
at all.
I mean, we're talking like that much it'll
go through an inch and inch and a
half of water, like no problem at all
for hundreds of yards.
So when I get to the... Tell you
that hundreds yards, and I'm like, holy, shit,
the inch and a half just went to
nothing. We're in big trouble.

(54:24):
Yeah. But... Have you guys seen those
the
inflatable chip bolts they got now? Yeah. Those
are cool.
Sa Horse solo or something like that. Yeah.
Yep.
Yeah. They seem to be getting really popular.
For a while, it seemed like a lot
of people because
finding

(54:45):
motors that were, like, lighten up because there
was like, I was it the to hot,
2 strokes that they were still making for
a while. The Tlc Base injected. Yeah. Because
basically no one's making 2 2 strokes anymore,
so they're not... Like, the 4 strokes are
all heavier for Mh. The same horsepower.
Yeah. Have you used 1? I've used everything.

(55:07):
III have 3 Yamaha 42 strokes. No. Have
you used 1 of those those
inflatable.
The No, but I have
plenty friends and Bethel that have them now,
and they just told them behind their chip
boots. Yeah. And they get get up to
camp and then they switch to the inflatable
jet. I mean, they're going through some really
skinny ones. No. Like soup like just like
Creek space. And then they have those

(55:29):
Not plastic the the jet foot. Yeah. Yeah.
The the U be... Yeah. Yeah. There
or something...
Foot on them. Yeah. You can
You can do amazing things with those books.
Yeah.
Where you're not having to worry about shatter
your cast aluminum. Yeah. Yeah. That's what Rob
has on boat. Yeah. He's got 1 of
those ur

(55:50):
foot feet on it. I wanna get
the 04:20.
The port solar 04:20. Yeah. Solar 04:20 because
I have a Am
2 stroke that I can fit my airplane.
Nice. Is that 04:20 is at a 14
footer?
I don't know the length. I know it's
small enough to fit in airplane the time.

(56:10):
Yeah. All you care. Yeah.
So you can get... Yeah if you could
get them, would you have to take each
1 separately or could you take both? Right
now, yeah, I could take I would have
to take them separately, but... Be still get
it. Airplane and then I could take oh,
like cares that would be. Yeah. Right. That'd
be like the best of both worlds. When

(56:31):
you could... You know, yeah. Use your plain
a flash get that remotely. And then you
and then you could still move. You're not
stuck just 1 call them moose to the
plane. Well, I think what... Have you seen
the photo for the foldable boats? You you
know, when I'm talking about? Those they're like,
those look cool. Yeah.
I think they're kinda long for air lanes,
but... They're right under the floats right between
the floats or on a float is where

(56:53):
I've seen them strapped. Yeah. To the are
there? Yep. I've putt around in 1 I
don't know how well they would do, like,
under a lot of power, like, a little
lake,
like, a a lot of power. I don't
know that you could, really get up on
step in, like, and run
smoothly
with them. I don't... Maybe could. I don't
know. I've never tried it. But have you
ever haul haul the lu?

(57:15):
On floats on underneath a plane. No. I
haven't hold the lu. I have... We caught
1 brought to the lodge 1 time. He
came in with a beaver.
And it was backwards. And I was like,
holy shit would it take you 4 hours
to get here 04:45 minute shit. I was
like, the fucking boat is backwards It's like
a freaking sailor you put on there.

(57:36):
And he's like, you know what? I thought
the same thing, so I put it on
right side up forward and hopefully shit the
airplane.
Didn't wanna fly very straight He's was like,
I landed real quick and spun it around.
Yeah. I think you have to put it
stern front half to. For the air aerodynamics
on the tail. Yep.

(57:57):
Otherwise, does it, like, just disrupt the airflow
around the tail So
flying. Yeah Yeah. Yep. Yep. But I've called
weird stuff. I've called the boat trailer. On
the spreader bars. Oh, man. I
the lodge and the tic chicks.
But never a boat.

(58:19):
What's the weirdest thing you think you've called
are most outrageous?
Man,
I felt some weird thing talking.
Maybe not weird. Maybe not the right word.
Probably boat trailer because... The boat trailer. I
I put it on the spreader bar and
I put the tongue towards the back. Yeah.
And I didn't notice it.

(58:40):
On step. You know, going and take off,
but
I I did notice towards the end, like,
where I should be airborne. I was starting
to pull back.
And I could feel the drag. So I
think the tongue was digging in the Oh.
0 damn shit. Yeah.
And then the axle I put on the
right float.
And I could not get above,

(59:01):
like, 84 miles an hour or the entire
flight. Oh, man. In eighties, you you wanna
be
flying no less in 80 in a beaver.
Yeah. So it took forever to get to
the lodge, but
I know that we had a lu delivered
to me when I worked for fishing game,
long time ago with helicopter.

(59:23):
And I just think that they would have
it sling or whatever.
Apparently, they just wanna...
So they have a post being hanging off
the bottom of it, like,
this, and it like, holds the the
boat from just, like constantly spinning second. All
rudder. Exactly. Yeah.
And that showed up and I was like,

(59:43):
what the fuck is going why thought we
were getting a boat. I was like, what
is dangling underneath the thing? Did they forget
to put the anchor in or something?
Then he gets closer, and I... He landed.
And I was like, what the hell? It's
like, yeah, we took off, and it was
just, like,
constantly spinning all, like, never wouldn't stop.
So we hooked a pallet to it and

(01:00:03):
done spent. Yep.
It's funny all the solutions to stuff that
you're like, man, Someone had figure this out
the hard way.
Yeah.
Yeah. That's so true.
Yeah. Around here though Most of that stuff's
been figured out a long time ago.
The amount of stuff that's called out to
remote places and the state is

(01:00:25):
unreal
Yeah. Did you do do whole a lot
of freight and stuff? Yeah. And bush charter?
I mean, yeah. So there's no roads out
in the bush, so everything goes by airplane,
and I've
I've haul everything.
Except for boats, I guess.

(01:00:45):
But 1 thing my... So 1 story that
I always thought was fascinating was my
grandpa back in the
sixties. I think he had he had a
S in 01:08.
Yeah. And he flew from
Qui
where he lived to dylan him to go
on Be lug.

(01:01:07):
And he got 1 and,
you know, back back in the d just
fill the plane with whatever fitting there. Right?
Yeah.
So he put the... He was gonna fly
back home me, put the Bug in the
airplane and
and they took off. They used the entire
mile long runway.
Oh my And they could not climb above,
like, 500 feet all the way back

(01:01:27):
Would be scary.
Yep. In a stint right on the edge.
Yep.
Yeah. Better hoping doesn't like
hiccup at all. Right?
Man.
Bet that plain smelled wonderful.
It's like you walk in here, like, it

(01:01:48):
just smells like ass in here, like, cardiac
brown bear fat smells.
Which has very... It's it's worse when they've
been on wales but is a very distinct
smell. It certainly is.
We've been... Which is weird how smells do,
like...
I mean, I hadn't actually worked on a
ko where, and did you dog use your

(01:02:08):
dog character and your dog tell you know
at all give a shit. He doesn't care.
I remember when I lived up on Ama,
came home and Rob had a
dog.
And it was like, 1 of those deals
where I was leaving. Was the end of
this guy's hunt, weather
situation. He was on, like, day 12 or
something of a 10 day hunt.

(01:02:29):
And we're like, well the plane can't come.
Let's just run across the bay, and we'll
see if we can find a bear last
minute. We ended up finding a bear killing
a bear, and then getting a radio call,
like, the planes on its way.
So I'm like, holy, shit we could get
this bear gun get the skull off because,
like, clients going. I'm going, like, you have
a whole bunch of stuff that's happening.
So I'm covered in.

(01:02:51):
Brown Linking up To Cody to go right
to the airport to get on a plane
to come back to to anchorage then to
Fair banks.
So I come walking into the house,
covered in bear hair and stink of ko
bear.
That fucking dog
like walked up to me took 1 smell,
ran in the bathroom and got the shower.

(01:03:12):
And was in the fucking corner in the
shower, like, curled up, like quiver in the
corner.
I was like, wow. That's impressive that that
smell can do that to another animal. Just
the smell. Well, when I was when I
was working for W lotus skin and wolves...
I mean, skin and, like, 50 60 wolves
a year,
Like, I just smelled, like, I'm sure I

(01:03:33):
just smelled, like, wolves all the time.
And You mean he stink so good. I
stink so stink so good. Yeah.
Which they got their own smell too, but
they, wolves and wolverine like
piles of them and isn't when Jerry had
had got that dog. Like, even from when
it was a little puppy. I'm like, alright,
I'll... Like, socialize with this so likes me

(01:03:55):
man after a while that dog I would
drive up the driveway and it would start
growing
right like like all. Yeah. No. And no
dogs really did, But moose man, he don't
care.
It's a freaking retriever. Golden retriever heat like
delta. Literally, but bring, like,
whole flop a whole black bear on the
ground. He's just over there sniffing and like,

(01:04:15):
he doesn't care. What he did care though
was when Jed 1 day after, like, I've
been Bear hunting and the kids wanted to
play bear bear bait
They got their play house So they got
the little tower, and they made a bear
bait,
and it take turns, like, putting a bear
hide on the back and, like,
crawl walking the bare bear and the other
up here with the nerf gun, you know,

(01:04:36):
and Jed wanted to play pretty bad. So
he... He had been the he had been
the bear all day.
And he goes Was like, alright, I'll play
with you. I gotta around the garage first.
He goes up there in tower. And I,
like, went and grabbed 1 of my G
bear hides.
Me go walking through the woods That's was
gonna try to sneak up on him,
and he didn't see me, but moose saw
me,
and he starts just

(01:04:57):
barking and grow and start. Really, like,
you know, but I was like, man. I
hope he don't run up here and bite
me because he was... You like, he was
not like it ends like, some saas squat.
Hurry Sas watch walking through the woods over
there. That's interesting though with dogs too is
they got the, like, the fight flight. Like,
there's no medium with dogs. They're either, like,
scared shit of bears and they're running the

(01:05:19):
other direction or they're, like, coming in to
see what's going on or Yeah. What? And
he was, like, keeping his distance
But, yeah, Like, barking real... Where I was,
like, genuinely, like, I hope he doesn't, like,
run up and bite me or something, but
he is kind of a chicken, like, other
dogs that are, like, barking at to be
aggressive, he didn't want nothing to do with
him. But,

(01:05:40):
once he found out was me, he was,
like, Oh, thank goodness it's you.
And then he's just, like... And then it
was sucked because I'd like, he'd shoot me
and I'd fallen in the ground and then
the dog had try to haunt me. He's
like, so oh, big
for.
But
no Yeah. He did thankfully doesn't seem to
bother because he'd have to get used to
it. Yeah. Would. But he has turned into

(01:06:01):
a squirrel hunt dog.
Like, there's probably 30 squirrels in the freezer
out there that
Jed has got to the point where he'll
the
dog hero squirrel and run out there and
tree it, like, at the trenton just wait
at the tree and jed come shoot him
or I shot a couple since I got
the new pellet a gun.

(01:06:22):
They fall out of the tree. He grabs
him and t him a little bit, and
then
I thought our... We had 42...
Last summer or 2 summers ago, maybe.
And I was like, it's gonna be pretty
tough to beat 40.
For in a summer,
and we're like almost a 40 already this
year. It's ridiculous. I don't know where they
keep coming from. It's

(01:06:42):
unreal. Yeah. It's like every spruce Right here
around the house. It's just squirrels every day.
Being saying place. They're just never ending.
Stream of them too.
And what's crazy is it's not just like
here in my house...
Notice driving down the road? How many dead
squirrels are on the highway or on roads
they're everywhere. It's, like, real

(01:07:02):
high year. Just like, I'd assume just like
hair, you know, but they, you know,
some years are high. Some yours are low.
Squirrels gotta be the same way. Because guys
have many roads.
There's a few, not a lot, though.
I'll give you a few can take that.
Shit.
Yeah.

(01:07:23):
Pretty annoying.
Yeah at 04:30 in the morning.
Outside the bedroom window,
my son of a bitch.
Think the worst alarm clock ever.
We had 1 that was terror the house
in Saint Mary's when I was working there.
He kept chewing through the

(01:07:45):
the sheet rock? Yeah. Into each bedroom minis.
That's a
you get rid of that thing. Oh, we
did.
We did.
You. Yeah Just sent us snow machine out
the saint Mary's last.
Oh, yeah. The bravo. Right? Yeah, Nice. Yeah.
I've only been there I've been there a
couple times, but just, like airport passing through

(01:08:06):
going out to
I'm trying to think of when
and Saint. Mary's when I was working on
caught,
and
maybe that was the only time. Because I
was thinking when I was working out in
Holy cross
that was Annie ec I think. That plenty

(01:08:26):
on the echo.
But a lot of country down there. It's
cool.
A lot of moose country. Sure.
Yeah. And even the trap and, like, he's
got all kinds of otter and
cats and stuff down there.
There...
I think it's probably
should be in that stack somewhere. I got

(01:08:47):
a blue cat that a guy from
I don't know if it was from Qui
hoc or
it was for some place out there that
the guy had sent in this blue cat.
That he he'd cut the feet off.
And just, like, putting up fir. Mh. And
then Bill, like, we saw... He called him
up He's was like, do you have him,
like, somewhere, like, in the... You, do you

(01:09:08):
have the car like in if like, in
a pot, you know, frozen or something somewhere,
you know, because it's pretty rare... They're they're
not worth much money aside from just appreciate
him, but I think I ended buy it,
like, buying it from Bill or he gave
it to me or something because I he's
was like, yeah, you're the only 1 appreciates.
Pretty cool, pretty cool looking cat.

(01:09:29):
There was a guy. I think the at
last time I was talking to you there
was a guy,
I can't remember where he lived either that
would,
like, send in a bunch of otter every
year that you could, like, eat off those
things, like, just flushed so perfectly clean. Wow,
even like between the whisk and stuff.

(01:09:52):
How are the cat numbers where you're dropping
right now? This year the cat numbers were
really high. Really? I didn't I didn't trap.
I had plans to, but
I just never made that out there. I
just
got the wolf sickness. Yeah. I
I went out
on walls on my sewing machine more than

(01:10:12):
I did trapping.
What
That's okay. Whatever floats you boat. I mean,
I this that's what's more fine. I ended
up shooting more walls and
the guys in Bethel trap combined, you know,
there... That's pretty awesome. There's something to be
said about that. Well, and that's gonna actually,
like, I mean, cats come and go, but
like, like, that's gonna do something for your

(01:10:33):
moose out there. Yeah. More than anything. Right
now, the wolf numbers are low. They've they've
been though for a few years and
20 20 was the alaskan snow year we
had, and we just... We cleaned up, man
We shot, like,
90 wolves that winter. That's awesome And,
we haven't had snow since and... When you
say we, how many of you? There's there's

(01:10:53):
10 of us that could it pretty hard.
You always go together or do you... No.
But there's... But there's 10 of you that
are actually going to do the same thing.
Like, out and. Pretty.
The mess between, like, 5 villages. Okay.
Yeah.
I I used to go with a big

(01:11:13):
group and
the older I get I learned that I
enjoy it more by myself. Yeah. You know,
You're... I bet you're probably more successful when
you're... It's low lower numbers of people as
well. You can be more successful, but
time is critical when you're on a wolf.
If if it's in the open, Yeah. All...

(01:11:34):
You have all day, but if it's near
river,
Yeah. Or a mountain and you have,
you know, decision making is absolutely critical. You
could make the wrong turn and give the
wolf 30 seconds, and he's up the up.
And you're not gonna get up that month.
Yeah.
Or
you can get stuck in a creek or

(01:11:54):
in the snow bank even.
So, yep, Time's is critical.
Yeah. Probably from the time you jump them
to the time you gotta be shooting them.
Yeah. They're they're pretty fast. And some of
some of them are really smart too. Like,
I've
I've been on a wolf where
I swear he was the alpha. He kept
a 2200

(01:12:15):
yard pace the entire time.
When I spit up, he would speed up.
And there was no snow that time, You
know, so yeah can't you can only go
so fast. When I slowed down, he slowed
down. And then
he was in, like, this drainage and they
got to a 3 way so Mh.
And I lost him, and I went up
and down every single 1 of those drainage

(01:12:35):
twice.
I never found him, and I could not
find his tracks.
Come to think about it.
He jumped off and he just laid like,
he laid You go right by him. Yep.
Because I didn't see any more tracks. Yep.
So,
yeah. Somewhere really smart like that.

(01:12:56):
Yeah. It's
and you want... You wonder some of that
stuff where it's it's just like that animal
happens happens to get old because they're, like,
super spooky and, kinda like, those are their
habits or how much of it is
I think you went texting some of
experience. Yeah.

(01:13:16):
Yeah. Because, like,
I mean, we've we shot a wolf that
had no paw. It it got caught traffic
chewed off or something.
Or this other time, like, my buddy shuttle
off had a snare on its foot, you
know? And it still was running pretty fast.
A different different year. I shot a wolf
that head up 02:23 bullet lodging its ass.

(01:13:38):
In a Steve still
pretty fast. And
there was a wolverine came in 1 time
that a guy had caught that had no
front feet left. Wow.
Still get you caught him in a trap
by by someone of his design feet.
Or in a con or something Don't remember
exactly, But
Then at this other time, we shut wolf

(01:13:59):
that I'm pretty sure was ra
because he...
I
I've been around a lot of wolves, and
I'd I'd I never had 1
that I snow machined up to that stopped
and circled me at 10 feet. Oh, Yeah.
Head down. And I was, like, Dude, what
is this Wolf doing?
And and he was like, he was sizing

(01:14:20):
up.
And he just did the slow walk around
me, and then he
completed his 03:60 and then started
following the the female that was in front
of us.
And it was shrink down. I'm pretty sure
she was in heat, but
when ended did it
shooting him.

(01:14:41):
But
before we shot him, we stopped and my
friend Seth was just, like, whistle at him,
like, like, he
was, like, like, at a dog and wolf
stop turned around. And started
t towards us. And I'm like, dude you
shoot him. You know you he was closing
in from 40 feet.
And the guy shooting him was, like, he's...

(01:15:03):
He he was a x military, and he
was just gonna
see what the wolf was gonna do. But
yeah, Was like, just shoot you know, like,
I don't know.
I didn't want him to
like Biting 1. Well, definitely happens. Well, that
old Frank Laser story
where he was up in out of Nor,
I think.

(01:15:24):
Had, like, he had talked to a
but like an elder guy that had been
out trap, like, a dog team. Mh. This
is like, in the forties, and had got,
like,
heard his dogs at night and went out
there and thought 1 of them had got
loose.
It was a big black wolf, and he,
like,
hit it, like, piece of firewood and like,

(01:15:45):
went to go, like, hit it and the
thing that. Like, chewed him up a little
bit.
And then
he... You know, what... I suppose... He made
it back out, I guess, and then ended
up dying a Ra
Like, he he'd got it, and it was,
like, took too long for them to get
him a shot or whatever time Me, it
was a long time ago.

(01:16:06):
But
yeah. I can...
Yeah. This the wolf we got to it
with our hydra dr had por fine closing,
mouth. Oh, and it was really skinny, and
it was just it was acting, like,
like, I'd never seen a wool effect that
way. It's
So that's why I think you had ra.

(01:16:27):
Yeah it's definitely around a little bit. Do
you...
Would you go back to the same spots?
Or do you... Are you constantly looking for
new spots or you I mean, you just...
Yeah. Well I just... If I go
multiple times I'll
run the same route pretty much.

(01:16:48):
Just to see, you know, what's new. Mh.
And,
you know, some days you you shoot 3
out of a pack of 9, and they
usually come back within a couple days. No
And I've I've gone out and, you know,
shot like, say 6 out of 9, and
then mh went back couple days later and
cleaned up.
But they always come back,

(01:17:10):
and they come back quick.
It's usually within 24 to 48 hours in.
Now, I I've seen other packs where, like,
you don't get the alpha. Mh. And you
shoot couple of the pups are...
They just don't know any better, and then
they're in a spot where you can't get
to, and then you watch the alpha howell

(01:17:30):
on everyone else just comes back, like, kinda
cool to watch.
Yeah. I know trapping them. Guys say if
you can snag those snag the male and
female.
Then, like, the you'll eventually get the pops.
Yeah.
Because that's pretty much what to do for
Pm. Like, come to a wolf expert for

(01:17:50):
people who don't really know. I mean, any
of those wolf packs generally is gonna be,
like,
you know, an alpha male, like, an adult
male and a breeding female, and then
their pops of, like, sub adults pretty much
is. Right.
You know, I don't know. How I imagine
Sometimes there's more adults, but anytime you get,
like,
mature other mature wolves in 1 of those

(01:18:11):
packs. I'm sure you get, like, a ton
of competition. They're not, like, super super nice
to each other there.
Yeah. That's the truth.
But, yeah. No. Sec kinda that's kinda how
I think you would wanna do it it's
like You have certain circuits you run looking
for kills and tracks. And, yeah.

(01:18:31):
So
you know, me and these 9 other guys
we
I I keep in touch with them, and
I kinda know, like,
what's going on, what river and I just...
I'm my... I mainly aim for the...
The caribou. That's why Yeah. Do the same
route, and sometimes I'll pick up, you know,
new
new tracks at I didn't see yesterday or

(01:18:52):
2 days ago or whatever and
can get a general idea of,
like, what packs there and, yeah, how many
there on that pack? What kind average of
miles?
In a day to, like, go out and
and on this... On my snow machine? Yeah.
Easily, a hundred and 50 miles a trip.
Okay. Sometimes it's more. Yep.

(01:19:12):
Just because, you know, from... I think from
Bethel have to did head, like, 30 miles
1 way to get to the good spot.
Right.
And that's... Ends up being 60 miles,
but Yeah. Just before you're even actually hunting
just getting there. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. How nice
does it made it having like, sled with
good gas mileage? Dude. It's crazy easy. The

(01:19:35):
the...
The fuel efficiency and power we get today
from a a new slit is crazy. I
mean, I have a 08:50 e tech, and
I I freaking love that thing be, like,
so much power and you get 15 miles
to gallon. It's nuts. Because you got the
600 d tech. What's your get? Like about
that. Get... Yeah. Yeah. Like, 12 or... I
mean, it depends on what... If you're just

(01:19:56):
like hammer and on it or not, but,
yeah, like, 12 to 15. Yep. It also
depends on the snow depth, and are you
pulling the sled or... Yep. Exactly. Behind or...
Mh.
I can't imagine that 600 e text scares
me sometimes. Yeah Yeah. I can't imagine 8.
You gotta lead. My room roommate when not,
like, yeah. Back got married. I had my

(01:20:16):
600 ace, and then he... My roommate had
got his first sled. He'd bought just to
used
tundra fight... Like, 05:50 fan. Mh. Before and
then eventually, like, after that year, I think
he he ended getting just 1 day, I
got home and he had a 8 fifth...
He had a 8, like, a summit 08:50
et tech,
or 800, whatever was the 800 or a

(01:20:36):
50 e tech.
Sitting in the driveway. Like, I just, like,
stood on that thing and used
it's like oh man. This seemed to be
d date like a freaking rocket.
Yep. You know they go. Not a power.
I know I listened to the last time
you're on here, and I can't... I'm trying...
Was like trying to remember. Go over it

(01:20:58):
quick how you do. Like,
So you find these wolves and you... You...
I mean, you're obviously trying to find them
in the open.
They kinda have to be or you you're
were never gonna... It's pretty open where we're
at to begin with.
That's why
we can do it successfully in in the
Bethlehem.
But generally all

(01:21:19):
head a direction towards where I know the
caribou is. Mh.
Because they'll be lingering around the Caribou process.
Yeah. They they pretty much hang out around
the Caribou. And you almost always have, like,
1
dominant pack or on the herd.
But but the Caribou heard is stationary
as well or just moving very slowly. It

(01:21:41):
might move, you know, 30 miles in 2,
2 or 3 days. Okay. But but not
general
idea where they're gonna be.
And
I'll head out and I'll hit every
high spot on the horizon, you know, bet
those flat. So
you look at the horizon, you see just
a little incline you hang for that

(01:22:02):
climate, and it could only be the... See
a 20 foot
20 foot advantage. Yeah. You... Still. But 20
feet. You can see Yeah. You know,
miles. And so all glass,
all glass 360
degrees,
And sometimes you'll spot 1,
or

(01:22:22):
I'll look for Caribou
or
Ravens. Ravens always. Mh. They're...
They're my friends. They're indicators of wolves.
So I'll I'll hit
I'll hit all the high points on my
way out.
Sometimes I'll
cut a track.
And

(01:22:43):
generally, wolves like when they run they kinda
run
1 direction. Mh.
So when I cut it track and start
running, I just hit all the high points
in the direction of the wolves. The Wolf
going, and I eventually find them.
The only times I don't find them is
when they hit
tree line, like a river or

(01:23:06):
hills or mountains. Yeah.
Do
do you notice, like, aside from just finding
kills? Do the Ravens kinda follow them sometimes.
Oh, absolutely. Every probably, I wanna see
90 percent of the wolves that I kinda
kill had on them.
Yeah. It's that's interesting. I... When my friend

(01:23:27):
when I was a kid, what has really...
That's really cool. Yeah. When kid indicators... When
is a kid
that calling Coyote down. I mean, I don't
really do it up here because just the...
It's just not as not near as much
action
as colin colin Coyote down in the states.
There's a lot more of them, but we...
With my dad grown up, we'd call,

(01:23:48):
my cousin who was much
older. He up getting killed their iraq later,
but he was
he got really, really good at calling Coyote,
and he was always, like, you know, Mag
pies.
Oh, Like you see Mag pies coming. Like,
there's a good chance you're gonna see a
Coyote pop out because they'll... The Mag pies
would follow Coyote around like that. So that
makes total sense. I mean, why why not

(01:24:09):
follow what follow to just follow the walls
around? They're gonna get you your food.
Right.
I what seem to be a good quote.
Oh, do you ever go with your airplane.
If you having trouble finding them, do you
ever get up and go fly around and
look for him?
You know,

(01:24:29):
many people ask me that, and
my honest answer no. I've never
use my airplane to go find them and
they go hunt them the next day. Really?
Yep. Because, you know, overnight, they can travel.
Yeah. Many
overnight. Yeah. And if you can't land and
shoot same day than she Yeah.
You can't seem the airborne. So... So it's

(01:24:50):
not even worth burning the fuel for the
plane that screw around.
I feel like anytime
I've
seen wolves in the area and then it
went out the next day.
I'm just... I'm bummed because I didn't find
the wolf scene. Yeah. Like,
just going. III

(01:25:11):
stopped.
Flying to look for them. I don't even
I don't even do that because it's it's
it's pointless. Yeah.
No. That makes sense.
Go looking for look for some... To find
somewhere they're at not where they were yesterday,
but yeah.
I know is these easy out of a

(01:25:31):
plane to tell whether it's moose or wolves
though.
And it's just like you're talking about earlier,
mean, Moose are never going a straight line
anywhere. They're just, like, constantly feeding wandering,
and those walls are just like...
It's just when wolves when they're they get
running when they're running away they're going straight.
All the time.

(01:25:54):
They're
Yep.
Rules are cool. I don't miss skin them
all the time, but
I don't know. I mixed feelings. I like
I like I enjoy doing that, like, putting
up stuff doing that kind of work, but
but they stink so good. They've do stink
so they think so,
especially get little green belly

(01:26:14):
1 that 1 that got snare and
do you do you keep them if they're
unique and then sell everything else?
Or do you have a
for you the. III have probably
15 wolves on hand right now. Yeah. But
most of them
I'll either giveaway to skin tones or I've

(01:26:37):
sold a few
and a feel on the wall, but
I don't know. I might hang on to
something for a while and
selling them the skin tones or give my
away.
Right on. Well, especially once you get a
bunch of moments like anne, unless you get
a real cool 1. Right. Unique 1. Yeah.
Like that Orange when I got. In the.
December I... I, I'm getting that stuff.

(01:26:59):
Like you said, the well, you said those
soft mouse. Soft model. This goes really want.
Those look kinda cool. Yep.
Not a fan. I've never seen 1, but
I saw I watch somebody on some
video on the Youtube and I was like
that is fucking creepy.
Yep. I think that'd would be cool to
have for, like, Halloween or something there's through.
Oh for sure or Like I mean, I

(01:27:20):
know where you're... What you're getting at, but
it just seemed so weird to me. I
was like, it almost looks like it's alive,
but it doesn't have a bone and its
body
like just,
Odd looking, you know,
but you can curl them I mean, it
look like a dog lane in the coin...
I mean, you can make it look like
a dog that's blame down sleeping in the
cold. Yeah. Yep.

(01:27:42):
Yeah. Well, you don't like it looking at
you, you can always turn together. Right?
Yeah.
It's always a way of remedy that problem
isn't there. Yep.
No.
So what's next what's next for you then?
When's the next season?

(01:28:02):
Well,
I've never done a sheep hunt. I hope
that I get to do that this year.
Yeah. So you're gonna you're gonna a sheet
hunt? I want to. Awesome.
Want to.
Super cool.
I know nothing about sheep hunting, so it'll
be a
a learning thing for me for sure.
I still know nothing about sheep.

(01:28:24):
It
I don't know. Probably the... I don't know
what you would say. Probably the biggest things
I would say is
just like, keep after it.
Keep going.
Like, you don't have to kill yourself. Don't
think about the cheeseburger this way when you
get home or any of that kind of
bullshit.
And, yeah. Just keep keep looking. Get tired,

(01:28:46):
take a break.
Yeah.
Don't like...
I mean, sometimes you gotta you gotta climb,
but, like, don't think you gotta go blasting
all over the till the top every mountain.
Around or climb, you know, like,
climb unnecessarily. Yeah. There's a learning curve. Like
there there's there's certainly just but, like, some

(01:29:07):
stuff you've gotta Once you know you're in
Sheep country where you're in an area where
there's could be sheep, just fucking slow way
down. Everything, like, slow motion. Because they can
be anywhere.
And if you're looking and you're not seeing
them, and you know they're around
then they're somewhere and the last thing you
wanna do is blow them out a country.

(01:29:27):
Before you can get on them
and really assess the situation. No.
Is this something you're gonna fly in with
your own plane somewhere in and hunt? Yeah.
Right on.
Yeah. That's a good way, especially if you
can get... Yeah, get before the season where
you can spend some time like, getting just

(01:29:49):
even for anything flying around, like,
Like, you may... You know, it's a good
indicator if you're seeing lots of sheet... You
know, seeing sheep. And if especially if you
can tell that there rams when you're flying
around, like, that's a good indicator.
But you're not ever gonna see all the
sheep that are there flying around. Right. And
just to, like, get a feel for
the lay of the land, Like, that's that's

(01:30:11):
a nice thing too to be able to
buzz around
beforehand.
Yeah. That's
You'll love it. Yeah.
Careful.
Yeah.
Careful you he was if Fucking
wolf kill him on the back door. You'd
be like, all I care about sheep now.

(01:30:36):
Yeah. You'll still like it all
I don't know why. I'd still like... I
just
can't shake. I I'd still like, killing bears.
I mean, like, yeah, he get you get
some meat from it. You get... Sometimes he's
like, some nice hides, but I like killing
bears.
And now my kids are gonna be killing
embarrassed to you so we're about to, like,

(01:30:57):
seriously up the...
Yeah. You need more for you. Till till...
Yeah, Jed can turn 10 and get his
own. Get his own tags,
but Sadie talking like she wants to kill
1 next year. Oh, yeah. She's a good
shot. They know. I'm think better her with
the pellet gun and 20 too. She's a
good shot. So if she's she's thinks she's
ready,
we can probably make that happen

(01:31:20):
too Yeah. Why not?
Yeah. That's how you live is just why
not.
My dad the the last night on her
trip. You know, we... After I killed that
bear, we went... Moved the tree stands the
other bait.
I,
we went back to camp, and I dealt
with that bear
rest, grabbed some dinner and went back sat
down and

(01:31:40):
saw, like, 4 bears in an hour and
eat why not? My dad had 1. You
did another 1. My dad had wanted to
shoot that chocolate 1, because we... That had
showed up on camera that day. Okay. So
feels like, that's gonna be back and
sitting in there and 1 bear came in.
Like, just didn't... I was probably the first
time that Bear had been there
and kinda a little spooky and left, and

(01:32:01):
it was a big 1. Not
absurd big, but a bigger bear.
That a little, like, laurent came in was
in there, and then
this black 1... This black phase 1 came
in that
he
he was all tore. Like, he was rubbed
pretty good on his ribs, but he was
all, like, tore, face all tore up and

(01:32:22):
but like, popping in his teeth from way
back in the woods,
like, just 1 of those asshole bore.
What what does that mean when they pop
their teeth? Kinda depends. Like, if he's doing
it like that, like, a boar is coming
in, pop it like, he just like, every...
Not
just like
like,
not just bang bang bang. You know, that's

(01:32:44):
kind of like I don't know. I would
interpret it as like, like, get out of
here. I'm here. Like, just an aggressive behavior.
Yeah. Like, try to scare it. Because sometimes
like, a boars will come in, like,
they don't really know what's up or they
seeing the tree. They don't, like, why like,
they'll, like, cough and swat stuff to try,
like, make something move.
Or scare something to scare you away. It's...

(01:33:05):
You know,
I think of it a lot of times
it's, like,
It's not even so much as them, like
trying to say, you know, get the hell
out of here. It's they're scared of what
Our... What's Yeah. What is point is already.
Yeah. That That's tim. It's like a bluff,
like, exactly. You feel out the situation. Like,
they're kind of aggressive, but not aggressive enough

(01:33:26):
to just come tearing in there and stuff
off. So that's that's a good point. Yeah.
Maybe like, seeing what's seeing what's actually. Yeah.
Because that, you know, you you're up it,
like, if you're up in a tree, you
can see, like, up, there's this little bear
here and this make it down you can't
see shit. Yeah. So
Anyway, he ran that bear off, and then

(01:33:47):
I was like, get to bore. I was
like, but just I was like, told my
dad I was, like, Just wait. Like, just
wait. That bear, you know, like, don't shoot
that.
If you don't wanna shoot, that's not the
barely you wanna shoot. Let's just wait. I
don't care.
And yeah, like, 15 minutes later initially because
we had a G head that had come
into that 1 too and
see way back in the woods like this
blunt
bear. I was like, I think it's a

(01:34:08):
g, but then it took gravity that. Took
the forever to come in. It's like, no.
It's that
that kind chocolate cinnamon bear.
And it was coming in, then it ended
up running this bear... This bore off,
and ended up being a big sal.
Like, belly
dragging no cubs, Belly like almost dragging the
ground old.

(01:34:29):
I think, like her insides were, like, down
to the gums.
So compared to, like, some other bears like...
Yeah. Not... Like, some bears will get, like,
gnarly, like, keen nines all broke off and
wore down, but
not all of them do. Like, that 1,
it's it's actual, like, inside or teeth were
way worn down. So probably

(01:34:50):
But they came in. I'm like, is 1
of those pairs who can be, like, conventional?
Like, what do they eat What they... What
do they figure out they can eat they
something that could be just like hammer on
their teeth that they're totally on all the
time. Totally.
But it was, like, just a super fat
bear. And initially, I'm like, manic. Might be
a cell. Kinda, like, in hindsight, like, short

(01:35:11):
neck and stub legs on a fat bear
Like that's a cell. But
You know? It's like, shoot that thing.
Talk to us. Shoot that thing, let her
have.
And
he was funny because he the video. I
thought if you saw Arthur, but he...
My dad, like, use he didn't use the
first pair, but he has these like, old,

(01:35:32):
string trackers. They're like, 30 years old. Oh,
things are awesome. It's a little... It's like
a hopper like arrow? Like a bow dad
got so that is. It's like a bow
fishing, kinda like a bow fishing reel is,
but it's got this tube bus like tracker.
Real thin and strong
line that you tie basically behind your broad
head and close range, it doesn't really affect
the flight. So

(01:35:53):
shoot it and then the bear like, runs
off
it's like,
well like, tighten the drag dad.
And then it's like, like for
10 seconds or whatever then is, like, stops.
It's like, that's probably it.
Yeah. That's awesome. So this string didn't run
out. No. It didn't... I mean, it's got,
like, it's lot. Like, a wild string in

(01:36:14):
there, like,
it's ridiculous. So...
In this situation. I mean, unless you really
mess 1. They don't... Nothing's going very far.
No.
I... He just lady likes using them. So
I love it. When did he... Dude he
just, like, decide I'm gonna use that this
thing this year? He'd used it before at

(01:36:34):
times. He oh, he kinda kinda off and
on. So
I didn't even know it and all sudden,
yeah. Show up and let's get the tree
and he's got that on there. So it
ended being really cool.
Yeah. But
well, and kinda, I don't know if we
had talked about it recently, but just people
being so dumb on where you shoot bears.
Do are things like sitting there court in

(01:36:55):
away he shoots a thing and takes off
over the log. I'm like, oh, that's a
dead bear.
Like, perfect. And all looks like shot him
pretty far back.
That's well, that's where the lungs are.
If you...
I don't know. I'm... I don't do any
Facebook or Instagram or that shit, and it
seems just like
if you're
gonna put stuff on the computer for people

(01:37:18):
to look at some douche bags. You can
for running fucking mouth out. That's what you've
done on all the time. It's like, doesn't
matter. That just seems to be the situation.
It's funny. But it's like it's chocolate
Yeah. You start to think like everybody's on
the same page and
not really. I mean, that's kind of 1
of the reasons with J bear.
I was skin it here. And I was

(01:37:39):
like this is a good opportunity so, like,
I, cut the back strap off 1 side
and then
can fl off the rib meat all off
of 1 sides. So you could see the
lungs and heart and everything sitting in there
and actually cut some of the ribs out.
To be, like, like where you wanna do
these things. Yeah. I'm, like, the leg is,
like, even back a little bit.

(01:38:00):
I'm like, he shot it. Like, this far,
you know, like, 2 3 inches behind the
shoulder and still got the very front of
the lungs. Wow. In front of the heart.
And you, you know,
so
anyway, but the bear they, ran off and
died, and then that other bear just like,
like, within a few minutes was like lingering
and out there, and he came back in.

(01:38:21):
Oh, shot him.
He took off the same direction. And they
ended up... We followed the string to my
dad's bear, and I looked over my bears
laid dead, like, 10... You know, less than
10 yards away. That's... I think that I
was texting you. And I was like, let
me know when they're like, 10 feet apart.
Good we got a contest now. Yeah. Robin
and I were piling them up and they're
like, 10 feet depart. And they... The app

(01:38:42):
literally were, like, right Yeah. Right there. Well,
they're almost laying on each other. I was,
so bitch you want.
Oh, yeah. It's good stuff.
Yep.
So... Yeah. You can you can fall for
sheep hunt and still and still, like Moose
Hunting and

(01:39:02):
Yeah. Wolf Cha and Seal Hunting.
Well, those those 3 are my
top favorite is, you know, moose,
seals and wolf. The those 3 l
I'll never stop chasing those. Yeah. What's your
favorite rifle for shooting seals?
Probably 02:23.

(01:39:22):
Yeah.
It's not like you need something big your
head head
definitely... Yeah. You definitely wanna center fire
So 02:23 is easy because you you can
get the emma anywhere. Yeah. Mh.
I just had
a buddy of mind built me A65G.
And

(01:39:43):
nice. Hopefully, next spring I can use out
and seals. That'll work.
Yeah. That's all Roy. It was at 02:20
swift.
2... Or and didn't he have that 02:20,
like, k hornet? He did. Yeah.
He did have that k horn. But 22
20 swift most of the time though.

(01:40:05):
Yeah. I'm we're still... I've been working on
getting
It's been kinda like
pulling teeth getting parts.
Around building a an ar in 22 arc,
you know, whenever all the appropriate parts show
up to put it together,
that's pretty cool 1. It's like the same
same overall length as a 02:23 or, like,

(01:40:26):
fits in the magazines.
You need to get a new follower, but,
I think you use A65G
follower.
But it's basic
basically replicates ballistic of a 22 02:50.
Oh.
And it's like... I'll show you cartridge I
got ammo for it, like, just
teeny little fat kinda of fat cartridge, but
made to shoot heavier bullets.

(01:40:48):
Because 22 fifties were, like a 02:20 swift
originally, we're only made to shoot, like, 50
grain bullets Right. 55, maybe at most,
unless you got a custom barrel put on
there with a tighter twist, but these ones
are, like,
like a lot of other new cartridges like
made to shoot,
like more efficient heavier bullets.

(01:41:11):
It'll kill stuff. It actually... That actually would
be a good black bear rifle.
Yeah. Like, if if Sadie ready to go
hunt next or something like that would be
a good 1 because it won't kick at
all.
Put a suppressor on there and
have added let her have at.
Good deal.
Yeah. What do you start buying suppressor?

(01:41:34):
When? Wait till you start buying compressors?
It sounds like the paperwork takes a long
time to get cleared and stuff. It keeps
not you. But especially if he once... If
you move into town, like it's a little
ease, I guess, like, shot... Some shops you
might have go in and do the
digit... It's all... Like, put you more days
gonna be in town. Really?

(01:41:56):
Many more days you can be in town.
I think I'm here through Friday. Go down
and do this paperwork 1 of these days
and just do it and order 1. And
be done with it, and you... Then you
can stop thinking about it. And, would be
like, oh, Got it. And they call me.
It's in. They've been they've been turning around,
like, if
individuals doing them, like,
it's it's kinda random. Like, you don't know

(01:42:16):
for sure, but the last few ones I've
done have been, like, 2 to 3 months,
but they've had people... Like, a lot of
people get them done in, like, a couple
days a week, 2 weeks. I always heard
it was like a year. It used to
be used to be used to... Be and
now you can just go into the gun...
Any of these gun shops. And
It's all... Great. You don't have to be
like, oh, no. Gotta go to the police
station and do this or go over here

(01:42:37):
and do that. Sweet everything done right there.
That's the reason I never did it too,
because I was like, I should, like, a
whole day of, like, when you run it
over here and doing this and over important
that because you used it, you... Like, I
used... When I did my first you... You
had to
fill out, like, the paper form.
That's a whole deal because you, like, purchase
the suppressor, then you have to do the

(01:42:58):
paper form. Right. You have to go get
passport photos.
Go to, like the police station get fingerprint
cards,
and then, like, take it to the troopers
to have signed, and then they can, like,
mail it in. And now yeah. Like, they
got
like, you know, century hardware frontier has a
kiosk.
They've got a few, like, Alaska ammo has
a key... Where you just do your fingerprints

(01:43:18):
and stuff, like, do everything right there. And
there's somebody there that's, like, if you have
any questions, just ask me. I do this
every day, like, 25 times. And oh, it's...
It was simple. I went in and did
it, and it was very, very easy.
Sweet. Yeah. Yeah. They're they're nice. It's quiet.
That's 03:08 so quiet. Yeah. I don't even
wear the mu. Yeah. At all.

(01:43:40):
It's amazing. But it's a... What really surprised
me was
how far off.
Oh yeah. From site in without the suppressor
on there,
shoot it. I mean, it was on paper.
Yeah. But I was like, holy shit. Like,
at 300 yards, that's, like, missing a moose.
Yeah. Well especially with, like, a lighter barrel

(01:44:02):
rifle and a heavier suppressor, like, yeah. You...
When you add that weight on the end,
it does change where your point of impact,
But,
aside from that, it doesn't change the accuracy
really at all. It sometimes it seems to
improve it. Yeah.
But I'll show you if you too. Like,
they make... Like,
there's just some stupid nice, like lightweight ones

(01:44:22):
now. Like, this year's the first year I'll
ever, I'm gonna bring 1 cheap hunt this
year. Alright on. I never have because the
ones I had were where I was too
heavy, like, not worth carrying that.
But it was pretty cool that blah the
big... Well both my black
that shot with the rifle, but that that
big 1 up the hill. It's like 15
yards away over the can, just, like, hear

(01:44:43):
that
whack.
Like all somebody. Got him good there.
He won't recover from that 1. And he
was... Yeah. Like, I just... He hit him
right straight in the chest, so I didn't
have exit, but he was, like there was
so much blood. He's just like,
lungs vaporized.
Wow.

(01:45:05):
He Yep. That was something I don't like.
But the suppressor on.
None of the soft cases, will the rifle
go into. Yeah. The snow machine, the gun,
won't go in, like,
that's why that's why now, like, a lot
like the rifle I'm plan on taking cheap
hunt that browning,
like, 18 or 20 inch barrel,

(01:45:27):
that would. With, like, some of those lightweight
suppressor
or like, 1, like, the 1 you have
in a short. Like my,
like, just check bait rifle, Like
usually, Always used their use my 3 75
or 03:38, but I got a guide gun
in 03:38 that's threaded. I had to get
an adapter, but I used that same can.
You have in a short.
Like, I just took the end off. Was

(01:45:47):
like I done you just take the end
of it off. And yeah. Shorten it I
didn't need it, like, super quiet, but the
last time I had to shoot that thing
in the trees. I was... Deaf for, like,
5 minutes.
And
even with that, like, in that little bit
shorter barrel. It was pretty manageable, but that
is they do get longer.
So there's no free launch, I guess. What

(01:46:09):
are you shooting wolves with?
Usually, my...
Well,
I've changed it up in the last couple
of years, so I have a Grenades
timeline
under a trapping license, you can use it
22.
That's right. Yeah. So I
carry a 22,
but I have a Ar strapped to my

(01:46:30):
just his backup up. Yeah. In case So
I start with the 22, and if I
don't get them, it's a 22 Mag actually.
Yeah. And then if the or
beyond reach of the 22 meg I switch
to the lu.
Nice. That's not a bad plan.
Because the 22 Mag shoot all the way
through a wolf. Oh, yeah. Yep.

(01:46:51):
A little better than the 3 80,
usually,
Yeah.
I used to use a
mini 14 or Ar 15, but... Yeah.
Some of some of those menu, like, you
nick him, and it just puts a big
tear in In the back.

(01:47:12):
Yeah. 22 max is a good gun, man.
And it's good for a lot of stuff.
Yeah. I got I got that Celtic Pm
m r 30. It's oh, nice. Perfect
because that pistol that holds, like third is
it 30 30 rounds in the magazine. And
so they have these
aftermarket. Parts now that you can you can
get the stainless mag
and, like, different middle parts for the

(01:47:36):
for the action and stuff? Yeah. And they
don't jam anymore. Like, when need all all
parts in there. And that works pretty reliable
even in the cold. Yeah. Yep.
Get a suppressor for that too
easy cool.
Yeah. I use this
M pro 7 oil.

(01:47:57):
Okay. Yeah. I have some of that stuff
too in the
attempts and it doesn't...
It doesn't jam my
R 15 or my handgun gun. Nice.
Yeah. That's something people can overlook too. You
getting a trouble used stuff that's like 2
too thick or Dirt
solidifies too much in the cold. Just the
little light, light,

(01:48:17):
light pain of
and sevens
get money.
Yeah.
Nice.
We've been rolling for a couple hours. Will
probably better better get you back home. Yeah.
I want you staying up too late.
My kid's been staying up late lately, man.
Just

(01:48:37):
crushing me that I can't get up in
the morning.
I've had a run of way late. We've
been working till, like, 6 07:00 at night.
Yeah. And, of course,
I'm not just gonna climb in bed get
eat dinner and
relax for a minute and,
yeah. But my mornings haven't... I've been, like,
starting until mine. Yeah. Well, I mean,

(01:48:58):
being starting working. Yeah.
Yeah. It's easy.
It's easy to get in
odd sleep patterns in the summer around here.
It's up super late doing stuff.
I'm not sure to do stuff at night
than in the morning.

(01:49:19):
Personally.
I like... I I'd would like to be
a morning person, like, when I can actually
get in a rhythm where for 2 days
in a row, I can get up
06:00 in the morning, 05:30 in the morning
and be productive. But I'm probably not that
guy long term. I... But I I like
when I like when I can be, through
of short periods that I can be that
guy.

(01:49:39):
Because I tried it... I started well, like,
walking all
mornings. I actually get up on
time to do it. I'll take the dog
and go, like,
walk all the way down the hill this
way, and then back up the other way
or vice versa,
so I don't die when we go she
hunting.
But
I'll start walking.

(01:50:00):
August 10 August 10 August 19.
Yeah
Yeah.
That's alright. Someone's gotta carry all your shit.
Yep. Somebody.
Oh, man. But, yeah, It's gonna be here
before we know it. So...
Yep.

(01:50:21):
So out there and get all your mountain
house before somebody else house before before you
end up with beef str off
12 days in a row or
whatever. I don't know what the worst 1
is.
But.
Yeah.
Anyway, the end of 12 hour day Hiking
they're all good.
That's true. Alright. Well, anyway, appreciate everyone listening
