This week on Undr The Cosh, we’ve got a guest with one of the roughest upbringings we’ve ever heard. Charlie Oatway was raised in a family on the run from the police, under protection from the Kray twins. Despite being surrounded by crime, Charlie managed to drag himself out of that life and carve out a career in football.
But it wasn’t without setbacks. He had his own stint in prison, which nearly ended his football career, if it weren’t for a lucky encounter with a guard who just happened to have played under Micky Adams.
Fast forward to his time at Brighton, Charlie shares the chaos: starting a 40-man brawl, stealing Razor Ruddock’s car, the infamous D-baggings, and delivering one of the best impressions we’ve ever heard.
After retirement, Charlie moved into football coaching, working alongside Gus Poyet at Sunderland, Real Betis, and Shanghai Shenhua, where he crossed paths with Carlos Tevez.
And if you thought it was wild scenes at the City Ground last weekend, wait until you hear about the time Charlie was coaching for POAK and the Greek chairman ran onto the pitch with a gun.
