(00:06):
So if you have your bibles, would you turn to Luke chapter 14.
Luke chapter 14.
As we are heading into thefall season and getting back to school
and just all of the things,I've been married almost 16 years
to my beautiful wife Morgan.
We have three girls and a boy.
My son Israel is here today.
(00:27):
I really felt like, yeah, givea shout out to Israel.
He's a on our annual FatherSon trip every year for his birthday.
So yeah, as we're heading intothe fall season, I really felt like
the Lord put a word in myspirit for V1 church that he was
going to help us fall in lovewith him all over again.
(00:50):
And so this morning I want totalk to you about the three stages
of love.
If I had a title for thismessage, it would be called the Table
of Encounter.
I'm going to preach the word,I'm going to pray for us, and then
I'm going to minister toseveral of you this morning.
And we just want to welcomeall of the campuses from around the
(01:11):
nation that are joining us inV1 church.
Thank you guys so much.
Lord, thank you for this timein your word.
Lord, we ask that you wouldencounter each of our hearts in a
fresh way.
Jesus, we give you our yes, even this fall, that you would help
us to fall in love with youall over again.
In Jesus name, amen.
(01:34):
In John 14:16, Jesus tells hisdisciples, if you love me, you will
obey my commands.
I believe this morning thatI'm talking to two groups of people.
The first group, you don'tknow God.
Maybe you stumbled in thismorning or you're watching online
(01:54):
and I have to believe the HolySpirit drew you to learn more about
God.
There's something that theLord wants to meet in your heart
this morning.
But I believe mostly I'mtalking, talking to people who are
committed to following Jesus.
Jesus made it really simple inthe Gospels.
He said, if anyone wouldfollow me, he must deny himself,
(02:19):
pick up his cross and follow Jesus.
So the way that I say it is inorder to follow Jesus, you have to
unfollow yourself.
It's really easy, right?
So we have to die to ourdesires what we want.
And we're learning what itmeans to follow follow Jesus, what
it means to obey Him.
(02:40):
As we're learning how to obeyJesus, there are three primary ways
that we can love him and obey Him.
Today I want to talk aboutsome of the motivations of our hearts
of why we're choosing to obey Jesus.
So number one, I want to talkto you about fear based obedience
(03:05):
if you're taking notes, it'llbe on the screen behind me.
Fear Based Obedience.
This is fire insurance.
You made a lot of people whoare following Jesus because they're
afraid of going to hell, right?
I don't know if you've evermet those people.
I call it fire insurance.
Hey man, I just want to makesure that my eternity is secure.
(03:26):
I believe that hell's a realplace, but I'm just kind of trying
to follow Jesus because Idon't want to go to hell or we fear
the consequences of sin.
Fear Based obedience.
I had a good friend growing upwho was a drug addict and alcoholic,
just really running from God.
And there was a local churchin our town that put on this production
(03:49):
called Hell's Flames andHeaven's Gates.
I don't know if you have everbeen to one of those, but it basically
just talks to people about thereality of heaven and hell and it
shows you a drunk driver scenewhere a group of teenagers tragically
lost their lives to a drunk driver.
Weren't ready for thatquestion of if you died today, are
(04:11):
you sure where you would spend eternity.
And he got shaken to the core.
He got so shaken to the coreabout the reality of hell that he
literally stopped doing drugsand alcohol that day, committed his
life to Jesus Christ.
And he's never looked back.
He's married, a millionaire, agreat business, a great family.
(04:31):
So he started at Fear Based Obedience.
The next form of obedience isduty based obedience.
I grew up in Miami and then Iwas a pastor's son in Indianapolis,
Indiana for many years.
I currently live in Charlotte,North Carolina where we have a church
(04:54):
and a ministry.
But we refer to our circles asthe Bible Belt.
Meaning like you're saved, I'msaved, we're all saved kind of thing.
So a lot of people that arefollowing Jesus out of duty and obligation,
hey, I go to church becauseit's my parents faith.
Hey, I'm trying to serve Godbecause this is the right thing to
(05:18):
do.
A lot of people who sit inchurch, we have this like, yeah,
I mean, the Bible says don't steal.
The Bible says don't murder.
The Bible says don't commit adultery.
The Bible says don't have sexbefore marriage.
There's a lot of differentthings in there that people try to
follow God out of duty and obligation.
(05:40):
I know for me, being raised apastor's son, you didn't even have
a choice, right?
You're going to church andyou're going to church early.
And if you're a pastor's kid,you got church every day, okay?
And so I just kind of grew upin it.
But I stand before you heretoday as a preacher, but my brother
right under me is a prisonerat a federal penitentiary in Florida.
(06:07):
How did two boys who grew upin the same home, one became a preacher
and one is locked up in afederal prison?
It's because there's adifference between knowing about
God and knowing God.
There's a difference betweensinging words on a screen and then
having them written on your heart.
There's a lot of people whojust go to church on Sunday, check
(06:30):
a box, and then live like theworld Monday to Saturday because
they are bound in duty based, obligatory religion.
And they haven't moved intothe third form of obedience which
you'll see on your screen.
Affection based obedience.
Okay, so you have fear basedobedience, you have duty based obedience,
(06:54):
and then you have affectionbased obedience.
It's out of encounteringJesus, experiencing his love and
affection.
I tell people it's really this simple.
You fall so in love with Jesusthat you fall out of love with the
world.
You can tell whether peopleare bound in religion or not by listening
(07:16):
to them repent.
People bound in religionrepent of breaking rules.
People who live in religionrepent of breaking his heart.
Lord, I'm just sorry.
I broke all the rules and Iscrewed up again.
You're just going to be backthere next week.
(07:39):
Lord, I recognize that I'm ina relationship with you, a love relationship
with you.
I tell our congregation inCharlotte we have the best dad in
the entire world.
When I got delivered of beingan orphan and God wasn't just some
busy middle class father up inthe sky who I kind of bothered when
(08:02):
I prayed.
When I got delivered of all ofthat stinking thinking and I got
connected to a father wholoves me, who cares for me, who wants
relationship with me, and hasinvited me to follow him.
There is so much joy and thereis so much satisfaction in following
(08:24):
him.
So these are the ways that wecan serve God, the ways that we can
obey God and the motivation why.
Okay, so people don't burn outon God because they go to church
too much.
People burn out on God becauseof why they go to church.
In Matthew 4, 5 and 6, Jesustalks to them.
(08:46):
When you fast, when you pray, when you give.
So he's not saying youshouldn't fast, you shouldn't pray,
you shouldn't give.
He's saying when you do it,don't be like the Pharisees who do
it to be seen by Men, he'saddressing the motivations of their
heart.
(09:07):
Okay, so again, bottom line,Jesus said, if you love me, you will
obey my commands.
John 14:15.
Any man that says, I love Godand lives in darkness is a liar.
Not JJ Translation.
That's one John one.
Okay, so you gotta like establish.
(09:29):
Okay, so like, we have adoptedthis form of American Christianity
where we can't even tell whoare the goats and who are the sheep.
It doesn't even matter whoshows up to church on Sunday or not.
Something hasn't shifted inpeople's minds.
Something hasn't happened intheir heart.
(09:50):
And I believe one of thethings that needs to happen in people's
minds in their hearts is weneed to fall in love with Jesus all
over again.
We need a fresh encounter ofhis love.
We need to say, lord, thankyou for, hey, you know, hell is a
reality.
I don't want to pay theconsequences of my sin.
(10:12):
Great start there.
All right.
Some of us, hey, it's theduty, it's the religion.
We're just kind of.
But again, I know for me, thatgot my brother in a federal prison.
It didn't.
He did.
He knew that.
It's like, you know thescriptures, but do the scriptures
know you?
Well, I go to church.
Well, I, you know, I weep withparents across the country and the
(10:35):
world.
I've been over 25 nations now,43 states are like, I raised my kid
in church.
But maybe that was the problembecause there's a difference between
raising your kid in church andraising them in Jesus.
Bringing them to church onSunday, bringing them to church on
(10:57):
Sunday, and acting a differentway at home breeds hypocrisy.
So again, when you begin toencounter Jesus, it changes the way
you think, it changes the wayyou act.
It changes the way who youhang out with.
The Bible's pretty clear.
Bad company corrupts good character.
(11:20):
So if you fall so in love withJesus, you're probably going to fall
out of friendship with peoplewho love the world more than Jesus.
I'm pretty sure if I told mywife I loved her and then cheated
on her, she would say, you'rea liar.
We cannot say that we loveJesus and we're following him and
we're looking and acting andtalking like the world good.
(11:43):
So one of the examples that Igive on my journey of learning how
to love God and obey him, whenwe talk about affection based obedience,
I'm talking about longevity.
Okay?
I want to give you a trajectory.
I want to paint a picture foryou that you can consistently love
(12:05):
God and make decisions thatare congruent with his Word.
You can be a faithful followerof Jesus if you'll learn how to live
out of affection for him.
But all these other options, your Christianity looks like this.
(12:26):
We go to this.
I do it like this.
He loves me, he loves me not.
Check walking on that.
He loves me, he loves me not alot of people.
Again, you have seasons whereyou're on fire for God and then you
have seasons where you'redoing stupid stuff again.
Is that a nice way to say thatyou have seasons where, oh God, I
(12:49):
love you.
I've been free from this for a week.
And then here we go again.
What happened?
Affection based obedience.
It's consistent faithfulness.
It's the same Jeremiah you seeright here.
Today is the same man of God.
I am at home.
I hate hypocrisy.
(13:10):
I am so tired of preachersacting one way at church.
I'm just tired of Christianityin general.
Lukewarm Christianity.
Fake it till you make it.
We need a revelation and arevolution in the church today of
(13:33):
people who, out of a love andan experience of God, learn how to
love him.
So I graduated fromSoutheastern University in Lakeland,
Florida.
I was born in Hollywood,Florida, grew up in Indiana and then
came back to Florida.
I missed it so much and wentto college there.
And I did 18 credit hours andmy job, because I had to pay for
(13:57):
everything was I cleanedtoilets 40 hours a week as a custodian.
Very humbling season of my life.
And I would say I was a busy bachelor.
I literally did school, I didwork, I worked out and I ate just
around the clock, veryregimented schedule until a girl
(14:19):
on campus gave me some attention.
It's amazing to me when I lookback at that season, how I had to
have a certain amount ofsleep, how I was on a certain budget.
But the moment a girl namedMorgan showed interest in me, I was
on the phone till four in the morning.
(14:41):
I was spending money on datesI didn't have.
What happened?
I began to have an experience.
I entered into a relationship.
There was a realm of affection.
I want you to listen to me.
There was a realm of affectionI encountered that overrode how tired
(15:03):
I was, that overrode how muchmoney I had.
So there was an experience, anencounter in a love relationship
that delivered me from being,oh, I need this much sleep.
I had to have this much money.
And when we got together, Ididn't say, oh man, I spent so much
(15:26):
money on this date, oh gee,I'd rather be watching Football right
now, but I guess we can hang out.
But people come to church andthink the whole time, wow, I can't
wait till this ends.
We haven't really had anencounter with God yet.
(15:49):
That overrides our Netflix binge.
Here in America, you canbarely get people to church on Sunday.
You try to get into prayer.
I don't have time.
Try to get him to serve.
I don't have time.
God forbid you take up thetithes and offerings.
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
But I can just tell you, as afather of three girls and a wife,
(16:12):
they pretty much get what theyasked for.
They got me on this.
Why?
There's love, there'saffection, There's.
It is my great joy.
It is my great pleasure as ahusband and a father to willingly
and lovingly give them thedesires of my heart.
(16:34):
Because it's called love.
Is there a love in your heartfor Jesus today where you will willingly
and delightfully give thedesires of his heart?
Will you fall in love with him again?
So many of these messages thatwe hear on repentance and revival
(16:56):
and, you know, if you're likeme, you got a sports background.
I'm like, all right, I gotta.
I gotta pull, pull.
You know, I gotta get geared up.
I gotta.
So I can just serve Godanother day.
I gotta.
Some of you, yourChristianity, you're just pushing
through.
You're pushing through.
You're pushing through.
When God says, stop, I want tobring you into an intimate relationship
(17:24):
with me where it's out ofloving me that you'll learn how to
obey me.
How many of you would like toget off the roller coaster of Christianity,
folks?
There's a place.
Like, there's a place.
(17:45):
The Bible says there arepleasures in God's presence forevermore.
Let me throw something at you.
You can write it down or quoteme on this.
Okay.
To sin, the invitation to sin.
It is not the gaining ofpleasure, it is the loss of it.
(18:05):
Why?
Because true pleasure is foundin Jesus.
We were born for intimacy with Jesus.
You're not.
We're not missing out onanything that the world has to offer.
But you think that you are.
If you haven't met Jesus yet,the enticement.
(18:28):
I'm telling you, there's aplace in Jesus where you won't wake
up every day tempted to sin.
It's not, oh, I've beendelivered from alcohol because I
don't go to the bar again.
No.
Because when you go to the baragain, you just face the same temptation
and fall.
No.
Fully being delivered ofAlcohol is.
(18:50):
I can be around it and I nolonger have the craving for it anymore.
That's real deliverance.
But again, you call God, I'mgoing to go to hell if I get wasted
again.
Oh, God, I know this is thewrong thing.
Oh, oh.
The fight over temptation.
You will not have consistentvictory in your life that Jesus died
(19:13):
again for and rose again.
We will not have thatconsistent connection with him if
we don't say, lord, I need tofall in love with you.
Lord, deliver me from goingthrough the motions thinking that
just because I go to church,I'm right with you.
Lord, I want a realrelationship with you.
(19:34):
Some of us this morning, sinis weighing on you.
The things that we do insecret, the guilt, the shame, the
condemnation.
That's why God brought youhere today to speak freedom over
your life.
But you don't get washed, hear me?
You don't get washed anddelivered of all that because check,
(19:57):
I made it to church today.
That is religious obligationand duty that we already talked about.
But if we begin to walk, I can.
Let me give you another example.
I just, if you're there inLuke 14, we'll jump into this.
Luke 14, 16.
I just try to give peoplepractical examples, right.
I want to talk to parents in here.
(20:19):
You know, me and my wife aredesiring to raise our children in
a home where theirChristianity is not based off of
us forcing them to do things.
So for me, when I walk by my13 year old daughter's room at night
(20:39):
and she is reading her Bibleand listening to worship music, I
didn't make her, I didn'tforce her.
That's what I'm talking about.
That's out of a heart.
That's encountering God as herown possession.
That's what's gonna keep herwhen she graduates high school.
(21:00):
So as parent, you're forcingyour kids.
You're oh, do this.
That's I believe most, that'sall they've ever known.
I'm here because I have to.
I'm here because I don't wantto go to hell.
No.
What if I'm here because Ijust couldn't wait to be with Jesus
today?
(22:27):
You're being tempted to lust, you're being tempted to drink.
No, I don't think so becauseI'm too in love with him.
How did I go from a busybachelor, no money, no time to meeting
a girl?
And everything changed.
It was because I experienced arealm of affection and devotion that
(22:48):
overrode what time it was, howmuch money.
I pray today in Jesus namethat we would begin to encounter
God in such an extravagant waythat when the invitation, when the
temptations of sin comeknocking people, oh, how many drinks
(23:08):
can I have?
Is it one drink?
Is it two drinks?
Is it how many cigarettes?
How many vapes?
You're asking how many girls?
You're asking all the wrong questions.
Would you have any if he wasstanding right there?
But it's about proximity.
It's about relationship.
(23:29):
It's about you realize the Godof the world is living on the inside
of you.
A holy God is living.
So when you look at thatcomputer screen, he's looking too.
When you're in that car, he'sthere too.
(23:49):
When you.
When you so it's relationship,it's presence, it's awareness, it's
learning how to host Jesus.
Well, how do I know if it'srated RPG 13?
Connect with Jesus, fall inlove with him, and he'll determine
what you can watch and notwatch by whether you're grieving
(24:12):
him or not.
I just.
I want to see a generationlive in consistent private and public
victory with Jesus.
I want to see a generationdelivered from hypocrisy, the mask
of I'm a Christian on Sundayand I live for the world.
(24:35):
I want to be see a generationof children growing up in the church
wiling out at 18.
I want to see that cyclebroken because parents and grandparents
are beginning to cultivateintimacy with Jesus on a daily basis.
And just while I'm at it, it'snot the church's responsibility to
(24:58):
disciple your kids.
That's your job, Mom.
That's your job, dad.
It is our responsibility tocultivate an atmosphere in our homes
that Jesus is worthy to dwellin, dropping them off for an hour
(25:19):
on Sunday and doing whateverwe want during the week in our homes.
We cannot sow bad seed andwonder why we're reaping a harvest
of evil.
Sow eternity into your children.
Put the word of God down onthe inside of them.
(25:41):
Lead by example.
Let's stop giving God ourleftovers and let's give him our
very best.
Amen.
Luke 14, verse 16.
A certain man was giving a bigdinner, and he invited many.
(26:01):
And at the dinner hour he senthis slave to say, those who had been
invited, come, for everythingis ready now.
But they all alike began tomake excuses.
Can you say excuses?
The first one said to him,I've bought a piece of land and I
need to go out and look at it.
(26:21):
Please consider me excused.
And another one said, I boughtfive yoke of oxen And I going to
try them out.
Please consider me excused.
And another one said, I'vemarried a wife and for that reason
I can't come.
And the slave came back andreported this to his master.
Then the head of the householdbecame angry and said to the slave,
(26:45):
go out at once into thestreets and lanes of the city and
bring in here the poor, thecrippled, the blind and the lame.
And the slave said, master, what you have commanded, I have done.
And still there's room.
And the master said to theslave, go into the highways and along
the hedges and compel them tocome that my house may be filled.
(27:09):
For I tell you, none of thosemen who are invited shall taste of
my dinner.
If I had a title for thismorning's message, it's the Table
of Encounters.
Jesus is telling a story abouta man who had a dinner.
He is inviting people to his table.
The word of God says, tasteand see that I am good.
(27:34):
There is always an invitationto come and follow Jesus.
We are learning what it meansto obey him.
But in this story, there arethree excuses why they can't come.
When God knocks on the door ofour heart and said, hey, I need to
spend time with you.
(27:55):
Hey, I need some money.
Hey, hey, hey.
And whether we act like wedidn't hear him, whether we ignore
him, whatever, the ways of theworld are too strong on us.
But these excuses that are inthis story have always bothered me
because none of them areinherently sinful.
(28:19):
If I read this story, like, hey, this guy said, eh, I'm going
to go to the bar tonight.
I can't come.
I'm like, okay, this guy says,ah, I'm going to smoke marijuana,
okay?
But these things oxen, a wifeand a piece of land, none of them
are sinful.
Have you ever wondered whatwas so evil about Isaac that God
(28:41):
asked Abraham for him?
See that you're in this roomand let me land the plane.
We're in this room, most ofus, because you've given your life
to Jesus.
People watching online, you'rein church on Sunday because you're
following Jesus.
If that's you, just raise your hand.
(29:02):
You're following Jesus.
You're trying to figure outwhat it looks like to obey him.
So most of us have a story.
We have a testimony.
Hey, in our BC days, ourbefore Christ days, I was.
You fill in the blank.
I was an addict, I was this, Iwas that.
I lived a sinful, habituallifestyle and I gave my life to Jesus.
(29:28):
Amen.
So a preacher will come andsay, hey, Repent.
Hey, give your life to Jesus.
Hey, obey him.
And many people, Christians, say he's not talking to me.
That doesn't apply to mebecause I've already repented of
my sinful behavior.
(29:48):
But in this story, the excusesthat are being given have nothing
to do with sin.
What if it wasn't that Isaacwas evil?
What if the gift that God hadgiven Abraham became a God?
(30:13):
What if what's keeping youfrom a next level encounter with
Jesus isn't your sin stuff?
What if it's the good stuff?
Have you ever had that happen?
Like, I'm in my recliner athome, Pastor Harvey, and like, you
know, I'm watching atelevision show.
I'm just like, trying to veg out.
(30:36):
There's nothing sinful in whatI'm watching.
And all of a sudden I feel theglory of God in my room.
And I hear that knocking onthe door of my heart.
And I'm saying to the LordGod, but there's nothing evil about
this show.
There's not in the Lord's.
Like, it's not about the evilstuff in the show.
(30:58):
It's about my desire to bewith you as my son.
There are people in this room.
There are people that arewatching online who the Lord is saying
this.
The deeper you go in me, theless you can take with you.
(31:24):
There are people in this room.
You're in a relationship withsomeone, one they are not who God
has for you.
Well, Lord, the Lord issaying, come be with me.
Come spend a season with me.
(31:45):
Come, come.
Anybody ever heard of Netflix?
Ever heard of y'?
All?
There are so many things inour lives.
You heard of Facebook, Instagram?
Some of us scroll social mediamore than we scroll the Bible.
Are you staring at?
(32:07):
Well, no, it's not inherentlyevil, but it's become a distraction.
Are there any men in herewhere your wife does not accept communication
when you're doing this?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Put the phone down.
(32:27):
I need eye contact.
I literally feel like the Lordis saying to many of us, put the
phone down.
I need eye contact.
I, I, I need a, I need a fresh.
Yes.
So I just want to prophesyover you.
I was up in the hotel allnight last night.
(32:49):
I believe the Lord is sayingto V1 Church if you're a guest.
I believe there's aninvitation from the Lord this fall,
this fall, I want you to fallin love with me again, says the Lord.
And what it's going to take tofall in love with him again is to
(33:10):
say, okay, Lord, where am Ifear based obedience, duty based
obedience.
Or how do I get into this?
Lord, I choose you for love.
Lord, I say no to temptationfor love.
I want to pray for us todayconcerning that.
(33:32):
Thank you, Lord.
Can you bow your heads with me?
Lord, I thank you for yoursweet, sweet presence that's here
today.
It's in this room.
It's flowing all across every campus.
Holy Spirit, would you comeand massage our hearts?
(34:01):
There's a song that says, I'mcoming back to the heart of worship
because it's all about you.
You.
It's all about you, Jesus.
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thingI've made it.
Lord, forgive us for justchecking off religious boxes.
(34:35):
Lord, I feel led to pray.
God, would you protect anyonein this room, Protect anyone in this
room and watching online fromany relationships that we do not
need to be in.
(35:03):
I feel like the Lord istalking to some single ladies in
here.
You don't need to stop yourpursuit of Jesus so he can catch
up.
You keep running for Jesus.
Do not settle.
Do not settle.
(35:28):
I see some of you just giving, giving Jesus.
This fall.
I'm not going to date this fall.
I'm going to consecrate myselfthis fall.
I'm going to focus on loving Jesus.
(35:49):
Thank you, Lord.
