(00:01):
Is James Gunn Superman the dawn of a new DCU age?
Let's talk about it. And you're listening to episode
(00:53):
243 of the Vigilante 1939 podcast.
We are giving our non spoiler reaction to James Gunn Superman
and whether or not it lives up to the hype.
As always, the best way to support the show is to please
leave us a five star rating and review on Apple podcast.
We will, of course, read them onair if you do so.
And I am 1/3 of the ghosts here at Dick Zionic.
(01:14):
And joining me on this episode is Nick Caruso Junior and he is
my Co host on Box Office Beyond Carlos.
Gentlemen, we're here. We've made it.
We've seen the movie. Mr. C, how you doing, Sir?
I'm doing great and it's really great to have Carlos on he he's
(01:36):
more than a worthy guest to haveon with our Nico.
Still a love vacationing, missing maybe the biggest moment
of the DC Universe. Missing the biggest moment of
his life. You know, Carlos, I don't know
if he'll ever live this down. I mean, he's, he's, he's lagging
behind. I mean, he's.
He's got to get with the times. Like he he's basically in that
(01:57):
Niagara Falls Superman 2 scene right now based on the pictures
I've seen so. Yeah, it's so up for fall, man.
Absolutely. I told him yeah, Can you believe
that the guy was post was flexing on Twitter.
I told him don't fly a little too close to the sun.
I still. Got to come back yellow and see
yellow sun one there. I know.
I saw that too, you know. The yellow sun has opposite
(02:20):
effects on people not named Superman.
Oh man. But no, of course we, we hope
Nico's doing well. And well, of course we'll have a
full spoiler review when Nico gets back.
But Carlos, how are you doing, Sir?
I know you and I are so used to talking box office and we'll
incorporate a little bit of maybe that towards the end here,
but how you doing, Sir? I'm great.
(02:41):
You know what? I'm honored to be here sharing
this moment with you guys. In fact, it was Nico himself who
put the bug in my ear. As we were sitting in the food
court of our theater, kind of waiting for our Showtime to
start. I got a message from him saying
that I should hit you up Zeddy, for doing a little review action
while in his absence there. So yeah, I'm honoured to be
(03:03):
here. You, you guys have certainly
been hole in the road here for since they announced that this
movie was coming out and arguably since you guys walked
out of Justice League way back in 2017, to be honest.
So. Oh man, memories, that's for
sure. Well, we made it guys, right, as
I kind of alluded to off the tophere, you know, it's been a
(03:24):
journey getting to this movie here, right.
We we thought we were getting Big Blue or guy when we walked
out a Black Adam here. We thought we thought we were
getting everything back and thenit didn't happen.
And then James going to go over DC and oddly know what the first
movie he's going to do is Superman, whole brand new cast,
whole brand new universe. So Mr. C, we probably everybody
(03:45):
knows our journey of following this movie.
So I'm going to really cut rightto the stress on this one.
Initial thoughts on like, you know your vibe going into the
movie, the vibe as we enter the theater?
And did this movie live up to the hype in your personal
opinion? Yeah, I mean, it, it, it, it,
it's so we've been talking aboutthis for so long and it's just
very surreal. When the moment comes, life goes
(04:08):
by, time goes by so fast, right?I mean, I feel like it took
forever to get here. We were very lucky to have a
screening last night, a free screening, and then we saw it
again tonight. So we're fresh out of the
theater with two viewings. And yeah, man, I'm a fan.
I'm a believer. I, I, I make anyone who's
listens to me on the podcast knows I am not the world's
(04:32):
biggest Superman fan. It's not that I don't like
Superman. It's just I, I've, I've read
Superman comics back in the late70s, a little bit in the 80s,
but he's never been my main hero.
And you know, really Superman movies were big 4550 years ago.
So we haven't really gotten a lot outside of some television
(04:54):
shows. Superman Returns came and went,
it wasn't popular and we don't want to get into the whole
Snyder thing. So I I'll say this, this, this,
this sucking viewing kind of kind of erased some of the
apprehension I had on the 1st viewing.
(05:15):
And I think James Gunn fully delivers here.
The greatest thing about the movie is David Cornslet.
He's absolutely wonderful in therole.
I don't think I could ever thinkof anybody else playing the
character. I'm even going to go as far to
say that he might be the best Superman that I've seen of
anybody who who wore the uniform.
(05:38):
So I know we'll talk more about it.
But yeah, it's a it's a it's a really terrific start to the
DCUI think that it's all laid out in front of us now, the
promise of what can come, but really thoroughly to everyone
enjoy this movie, watch it. There's so many nuances in it.
(05:58):
There's a lot of characters, butthe second time around, I feel
like I was maybe listening to the dialogue more.
I was out of my own head. I wasn't preconceiving some
things that I thought were goingto happen.
And I just kind of let it myselfbe immersed in it.
And I think it's a terrific, youknow, I again, we'll, we'll talk
a little bit later where it stands.
(06:18):
I don't know where it is, but for what it's supposed to do and
for how great the the lead actoris in it, I think it's a home
run. Yeah, yeah.
And like, I know you were actually, you told me you said
the movie. You thought it was pretty good,
like you thought it was good, but then like second viewing,
like are you enhanced a little bit?
I am, I am definitely enhanced. I look, I still have a little
(06:42):
bit of issue with the third act,but tonight I kind of let myself
go. Zeddi, you had a great take that
I want you to expound upon laterin the car coming home because
it did feel like what you talkedabout.
And I might have been hey, Carlos, I I want you to say
where I'm coming from. I might have been too much with
the realism of of what we've gotten with the Nolan stuff and
(07:07):
even with Snyder. I know Snyder got comic bookie
later, but those movies never really felt there.
There was a serious tone to themand they felt I always watch
those movies like it. It could happen in real life.
This movie is one of those movies that you've got to
(07:28):
suspend your belief a little bitand understand we're entering a
different phase of this DCU and to get what we want, what I want
to see all the characters eventually in a full-fledged
Justice League movie, you're going to have to my mind has to
change a little bit, right? We're going to have to get into
magic and mystery and you don't and, and Matt Reeves, forgive
(07:52):
me. That was the other thing, right?
We're so used with DC that everything is so real.
And even Snyder, I, I still, when I think of Snyder, I still
feel like those movies were written different.
And James Gunn just has a way ofdoing it to where, and I hate to
use this term because everybody's used it to death,
(08:13):
but it does feel like it is right out of the comic book.
And that's a good thing. And I've now opened myself up to
that. I was yesterday, I was holding
back a little bit. Tonight I said, you know what?
I've got to suspend all my disbelief and just understand
this is really what I want. This is what people should want.
(08:33):
And for the future of this brandthat we love so much, this is
what we need. Wow.
Yeah, no. And, and 'cause I want you to
expound upon everything that Mister C says.
So obviously you're on the opposite side of the fence here.
You're on the opposite. You know, you're on the opposite
side of the Seas here, right? So you have a totally different
vibe and viewpoint of, you know, how the movie is, you know,
(08:56):
perceive where you're at. So obviously, you know, talk
about you like, you know, did the movie live up to your level
of anticipation, your hype? You got to see it with with with
your daughter, who's one of the nicest people in the the entire
world. And I'm glad that you guys got
to have the experience. So just talk about did the movie
deliver for you? Yeah, like our viewing was, it
came about a little unexpectedly.
(09:18):
We had kind of the Thursday preview night tickets, which was
the first showing up here in Canada.
And then, yeah, she being Superman superfan, was hammering
all the contests and giveaways on social media and she ended up
winning tickets to the press screening there.
So we went and yeah, it, it was pretty cool.
(09:39):
And like, she was just on cloud 9 heading into this thing.
I, I felt like I needed to have medicated her before I took her
to the theatre cause the, the hype was pretty high.
And to be honest, the hype was so high that I was a little
worried 'cause I was like, how, how can any movie live up to
this type of thing? And you know, the the rumblings,
(10:02):
the vibe just seemed different going into this one, like with
so many of the previous DC movies that you know, may not
have lived up to expectations you always heard about like the
the executive screenings get getting standing ovations and
how it's the the greatest movie since The Dark Knight.
(10:22):
But with this one, ironically, the early reviews are kind of
bad from what you were led to believe.
And so and Zeddy, I think you and I talked about this, but I
was like, I kind of feel like this one is going to hit just
because the music feels different this time around
heading into this dance. And yeah, like the movie
(10:46):
absolutely delivered for me. It was very different.
Kind of like you were saying, Nick, where I didn't.
I, I knew it was going to be comic bookie, but I didn't think
it was going to be that comic bookie.
But I think they were pretty smart to take that approach
because I think that previous kind of heightened reality
(11:09):
approach to these movies. It's run its course like it's,
we've had 10 plus amazing years of it from Nolan starting it
with The Dark Knight trilogy andthe MCU.
That's kind of been their stock and trade.
And it looks like Fantastic Fouris going to kind of stay with
that, where it's like this is a a version of the real world and
this little piece of it is different.
(11:30):
Whereas with this, it really felt like they were singing out
of a different songbook. So it took me a second to get
oriented to it. But once I did like there's a
moment and it was actually just a visual with Metamorpho.
And I was just like, I cannot believe that we are here and
(11:50):
they are doing this on screen and I am, I'm all in.
So yeah, I it's interesting and I made this point with our
mutual pal Mario earlier, but itmight not be like an instant all
time classic. And so it's maybe not Raimi's
Spider Man, but it certainly feels like Spider Man
(12:12):
Homecoming, where it's somethingthat everyone can love.
And we're on the precipice of something great that will build
something that's arguably gonna be embraced to an even larger
degree than the previous things. In that if you're comparing
Spider Man to Spider Man, right,by the time you got to the end
(12:32):
of the Raimi trilogy, people maybe didn't love it as much as
they loved the end of the Homecoming trilogy.
So that's probably the best comparison I can give to where
I'm at. And then I guess the Donner
Superman would be the Raimi stuff, and ironically, Amazing
Spider Man would be Zach's stuff.
Yeah, yeah, no, that's, that's all lovely to hear, gentlemen.
(12:58):
Obviously you, you guys know me,but I will obviously elicit.
I love the movie. I doubt this movie was great.
I was already high on it and initially when I walked out of
it, I've already seen it a second time and I love the movie
even more. And that's kind of weird 'cause
usually when you see it a secondtime, you're either a little bit
lower. Sometimes you, you, you pick
some things out that you maybe might have missed the first time
(13:18):
and you're like, I still like it, but I maybe have some have
some grudges with it a second time around.
But this one was so hard for me to gauge because I was so
excited for it. I was so anticipating it.
It was cool to see so many Superman shirts at my initial
press screening. It was cool to see just people
excited for this movie just in general.
(13:39):
All you know, this movie breaking the trailer records and
you have all the box office predictions of people thinking
either this movie was going to be one of the biggest superhero
movies of all time or it falls just short, right.
So there's so much, so much going in this movie, so much
riding on this movie. You guys can have already said
(14:00):
it and and I don't even think it's an insult at this point.
Like this does feel like the most comic bookie Superman movie
that we've ever had put to screen.
It literally feels like an episode of Superman the animated
series dressed like unlimited bought to life.
James gone at the helm here so shouldn't have had any doubt.
I love the humor. I love the characters in it.
(14:22):
I told this to Mr. CI mean I I need 10 movies with Dave and
corn sweat. Rachel Bosnihan is is Lois and
Clark. I mean like the we we say that
tagline, you'll believe a man can fly with Christopher Reeve.
This movie makes me believe Superman's going to fly again
and like he just feels like he'sthe guy when you watch this
(14:43):
movie. I mean, there's so much heart
and there's a motion. The the story is simple.
The movie's fast-paced, but it'salso like it flows just well
enough. It's very entertaining.
It's very fun and it's a vibrantmovie.
Like, I love looking at this thing, especially in IMAX on the
big screen. And like, again, you know, we
(15:04):
haven't seen this from Superman.I know Mr. Z set it up
beautifully, right? I mean, like, Man of Steel was
what it was. It was, it was odd.
It was Krypton. It was all that stuff soaked
into it. The diner stuff was the diner
stuff. But I mean, this one, I mean,
he's fighting a Kaiju, He's fighting other aliens and meta
humans, right? I mean, like, this is such a
(15:25):
breath of fresh air that I was like worried.
I was like, is this something that we haven't seen before?
Like how can we really do Superman in this comic booky
stage? Like can we even do them in
this? But this movie just wears its
heart on its sleeve, man. Like the the experience I felt
like was so special and it was so gratifying and and Mr. C was
(15:46):
going to set it up beautifully. But the tone of this movie just
works. And it's hard to say really
without going into like full on spoilers.
But this movie has a tone. And people, please don't take
this the long way because because I know we're going to
draw the comparisons. But it has like that pre early
MCU Phase one, Phase 2 tone where it's like it's a movie
(16:09):
that's very entertaining, it's very crowd pleasing.
You love the characters, the humor works, It's just right.
It's not beating you over the head with it, but there's a lot
to really like and enjoy in thismovie that the soundtrack is
good and the score hits when it's supposed to hit right.
So it's like that complete package of some of those earlier
(16:30):
comic book movies that we're so used to seeing.
And it's banking on your abilityto that you now care about this
character. So I think where I'll leave it
now is go to Mr. CNN. We'll I'll head it back over to
Carlos's. Did the story work for you, Mr.
C? Like what do you think?
Like what? Like did it?
Did it come together enough for you?
(16:52):
Yeah, Carlos said something about being orientated like I,
I, I can't agree with you more. And I, I want you after you see
it tomorrow, I please text me. And I think you're going to even
like it better, like I did, because I felt like I got hit in
the mouth a few times in the first viewing and I was
disorientated, like all they're really doing this or all that.
(17:14):
Oh my God. Oh, wait, that's crazy, right?
And I was kind of judging stuff and, and not enjoying what this
guy laid out for us, which was areally terrific Superman story
without having to go into the origin and, and backtrack all
that. The story works.
The story's simple, and yet there's still a bit of A twist
(17:36):
to it with with Lex, right? And the pacing felt so fast to
me the first time, but the second time it it, even though
it's still fast-paced, but it just flowed better to me.
The story was great. And again, we're not going to
(17:56):
give spoilers because people haven't seen it, but there's
really not much that. And, and This is why I, I, I
hope that it plays. I believe it's a four quadrant
film. I believe this is accessible to
to kids and I think it's easily digestible to a general audience
and there's enough there. So the story was good.
(18:17):
I wasn't looking for the exposition we got in Matt Reeves
Batman, right, I wasn't looking for that.
So this is fine. This is Superman.
The the essence of the characteris never been more prominent of
how good he is. The little twist that happens
just confirms that. And it's it's make no mistake
(18:40):
about it, it's fully centered around him.
The supporting characters that this guy picks out for the story
play into the story so beautifully.
And it it's almost like there's no wasted scene or wasted time.
As I saw this the second time, Carlos, I didn't feel like
anything was a throwaway. Everything really hits Z, right?
(19:04):
I mean, we talked about it. Well, that's my long winded way
without giving away spoilers, saying yes, the story works.
It works for me. It's satisfying to me.
I'm no pretentious comic book guy, but I got a lot of history
with this. It it should work for everybody.
This is not a story. And again, not everyone's going
(19:24):
to love it, but it's I don't think you can pick apart this
thing too much. It is what it is.
Yeah, Yeah, I caught us. I mean like obviously like you
know, this is a Superman that the trailers do elicits you like
this is a more vulnerable Superman.
This is a more stripped down or trying to be a more stripped
down take on the character and write with all these different
characters in this movie, right?I mean you have the justice
(19:45):
gang, you have Guy Gardner, you have Hawkgirl, you have
Metamorpho, you have crypto. You know, you have so many other
you you have Lois Lane, you havethe daily planet people, you
have Lex Luthor, right? You have the villain that Lex
Luthor's hanging on. You have the engineer, right.
With all of that coming together, like do you feel that
you got a complete package or close to it with this movie?
(20:06):
Like do you think like? Some elements maybe got left
undercooked or like how? How do you feel about the
presentation of this movie that we got?
Yeah, I know. I got a really echo what Mr. C
was saying in that, yeah, there's a lot there.
Like you, you all those characters that you list off
like at at first blush that could be intimidating to
(20:27):
somebody who is maybe not initiated or whatever.
But make no mistake, the entire story is just surrounding
Superman and every single one ofthose characters kind of works
to serve his story and to flesh out his motivations and what
he's all about. And I think the biggest thing
(20:49):
with all the other characters, first and foremost Lois, and
then it kind of goes from there is that one of Superman's quote
UN quote weaknesses in this movie is his, his naivety and
his wholesomeness and just how much he cares for his fellow man
(21:10):
to his detriment. Right?
Like the most unrealistic thing about this movie is that the
most powerful person on this planet is truly altruistic and
noble and caring and values every other person that he
inhabits the the planet with kind of thing.
And I, I think that's what makesthe movie work.
Like you guys loved Guy Gardner, but he worked because of how he
(21:35):
reflected off of Superman and you got you got insight into
Superman's character watching the two of them play off each
other. And I loved Mr. Terrific.
I thought he was like the coolest character in the movie.
But the the difference between the two and the things that
Mister terrific values versus what Superman values and James
Gunn was pretty masterful. And they weren't always it.
(21:57):
It wasn't all these big loggerheads with these
characters. It was just like these guys do
that and he there was times where he was just resigned to be
like, I don't have the final sayin this.
So I thought that was pretty cool.
Like to be honest, like Lois completely disarms him and we've
seen a bit of that in the trailer, but it's like she is a
force to be reckoned with from beginning to end in this movie.
(22:20):
And it it but her character and his parents and everything else,
and in fact, his parents and howthey inform him is the the spine
of this movie. So, yeah, for as much stuff as
is in there, it's all very finely tuned and it's all for
(22:43):
the purpose of basically the story is there's this super
powered being. And how does this person with
this set of values negotiate allthese circumstances that are
thrown in front of them? Because like from our world view
and the the things you see in the news and social media and
(23:03):
everything else, he should not be able to function.
He should not be able to function without lowering
himself to the baseline of the people that are opposing him
type of thing. And the story is, is how do we
see this guy kind of make his way through all of that?
So that's where the movie reallyShawn and you know, you, you see
characters who are struggling inthis movie and they all struggle
(23:27):
because they lose their orientation as to what's
actually right and what they should be doing right.
Like probably the best showcase of that is the aforementioned
Metamorpho. And but I I think that that's
where the movie really, really shines.
And if you know, and it kind of says that either where you get
(23:49):
to see the Superman get beat up a bit and taken advantage of,
but I think that that's what makes him interesting, right?
Like when you get these characters, like way too
powerful, then the forces that can oppose them are super
powerful. And it's never made sense to me
these bad guys that with a thought can crack the world in 2
'cause you start watching the movie and it's like, well why
(24:10):
didn't they just do that? Why didn't they just wipe out?
If it just takes a button press? Why do we have to spend 2 hours
going through this 'cause they can.
They run into problems with that'cause you look at Captain
Marvel like you got a great first movie out of it, but then
she was just too much for them to be able to do anything with
through The Avengers movies and then her own sequel kind of
(24:32):
thing, right? So I think it was pretty smart
to take this approach with Superman to make him vulnerable,
like he gets smoked on somethingboth physically and emotionally
too, which I thought was kind ofcool.
So it made me excited for what the future of the DC Universe is
in that we're really stepping back from that kind of the DC
(24:57):
pantheon. They're they're the gods of old,
just in the a modern day iteration.
And it's like, well, no, they were never really intended to be
that. And so I think it's kind of nice
to have them showcased in a different manner.
And then like Nick, like you said, this is 100% a family
movie. Like, this is something that
(25:19):
little kids I think will really love.
And I think this is a movie thatWarner Brothers has wanted since
they commissioned Superman Returns, to be honest with you.
Something that they can put on lunch boxes and pyjamas that
kids will love. And like, I guarantee you,
there's nobody under the age of 12 that's not going to adore
this movie, so. Yeah, everyone, everyone's going
(25:41):
to want their their their cryptobear teddy bears or dolls or,
you know, toys, you know, say what you will, Tom Mcfarlane's
going to sell out on the crypto toys alone.
You know, still help us all permissionly.
I don't know if you even want toadjust it or if you want to
bring it up. You know, I was going to open
the floor like, you know, either.
I wouldn't say Nippix this week because I think we're all pretty
(26:01):
like high and then positive on the movie.
But are there any like concerns that you have about the movie?
Like when it does come out, maybe I'll phrase it that way
about the movie. No, I upon the second viewing,
what bothered me a little bit was very trite from the first
(26:22):
feeling did not didn't feel it tonight.
It might have also helped too that we were in a crowd that
paid for the movie tonight, right?
The Amazon Prime, lot of Superman shirts, lot of lot of
ages, lot of lot of young women, guys, wonderful crowd mothers.
(26:43):
And it, it made me feel really good because there's nothing in
the movie. Look, if this movie doesn't do
well, I, I, I, I would probably have to throw it back to my old
crutch. Is the old comic book fatigue,
right? Because, because this movie's
(27:04):
not like what we've seen lately. It it's not, it's not anything
like the last MCU stuff we've seen.
It's certainly not like any of the of the floundering ending
DC, EU stuff we've seen. This is a comic book movie and
it's it's not like, you know, there's themes and there's
(27:26):
things in there that we we have seen before, But James Gunn just
does it. You know, he irritates me a lot
on this on. But you know, if I could talk to
him today, yeah, I would tell him.
Thank you. I'm sorry I doubted you.
I'm glad you're out of the our stuff for a while.
(27:48):
Right? You're you're back into your PG.
For another month, he will be. And I would probably look at him
and say, like, you probably going to give me the Justice
League movie that I've waited mywhole life for it.
He probably would say, yeah, He'd probably say hang in there,
3-4 years, it's coming. Just let us work towards it.
That's how confident I am right now because of this movie and
(28:10):
it's it it it doesn't. It could be a Superman sequel,
but you know, for that for anybody that would see this
movie, and I've read some of thebad reviews and and what not.
And again, not everybody likes these movies, but I just don't
see Zeddy like one thing that would that somebody could go out
of this movie sucks. It's it's, it's, you know what I
(28:31):
mean? Like that, right.
I don't see. And this doesn't look like a
this movie's well, it's put together, Carlos.
Well, this does not look like a movie that went through a lot of
reshoots. We know they cut some scenes
from it. One thing I, I, I, I could have
this is a movie that maybe couldhave used an extra 1015 minutes
(28:54):
and I don't think it would have hurt heard it like, you know, we
always and I'm the first guy to say a lot of these movies guy,
they should have took 1/2 hour off 20 minutes off.
But this movie maybe 10 more minutes.
But that's again, a very minor nitpick.
As a whole, this is a this is a very entertaining movie
(29:15):
visually, the story, the humor, the heartfelt, the lead is
dynamic. David is fantastic in this role
and look, we don't want to use the dog as the crutch, but the
dog is fantastic and. The dog plays very well in the
crowd. He's a very vital role in the
movie. He's used just enough.
(29:36):
He's not overused. And you know, there's some
dialogue in here that we won't spoil when how Superman talks
about the dog. And I know that myself, I lost
my poor little dog a few months ago, but I was never a dog guy.
Got to be a dog guy the last 15 years.
But there's a lot of animal lovers and, and I think that
(29:59):
Carlos, you know what I mean, It's like that's just another
little thing. That's a huge thing that he puts
in here that is so different than what we've seen before.
We've seen Rocket, what he did with Rocket, which is one of the
great arcs of all time of any character that I've seen in any
comic book movie. But he does it in a different
way with Crypto and and boy, there's some surprises at the
(30:23):
end that I think people. Are.
Oh yeah. And again, we don't want to
spoil it, but but no, I'm not concerned.
Look, we'll talk next week and and and we'll let Carlos talk
and I'm sure we could give her alittle box off prediction.
But I would be very surprised ifthis thing doesn't hit fairly
well. I'm not talking to Avatar.
(30:45):
We're not talking to Avengers Infinity War Certainly we're not
crazy like that. But I would think that this
movie comfortably does some numbers that really open up the
floodgates for what's going to come.
Gotcha. Yeah, Carlos, take it away.
I mean, like obviously we'll youcan give your final thoughts on
(31:06):
Superman, of course. And then I guess we'll open the
floor a little bit for some box office because I know you and I
are going to break it down more in depth once we get some
official numbers rolling around. But you know, and that'll come
soon. But where's your gut at?
Not you know, now that you've seen the movie, you having a
projection of what you think themovie is going to do or should
or needs to do. Where you at box office wise
(31:27):
now? It, it was interesting because I
called you when we're driving home yesterday and one of the
first questions you asked me waskind of where does this rank?
Is this your favorite? And after, after sleeping on it
and stuff. And then I kind of did the old
letterbox list and things like that.
But I just noticed that as I populated my reviews and my
scores for this and Man of Steelwere exactly the same.
(31:49):
I was like, Oh, that's interesting.
And then I do, I do love Man of Steel.
Like it's, I, I can't go after the shiny new toy kind of thing,
but I love them equally. But they are 180° apart from
each other. And I'd argue that Man of Steel
might be more to my tastes. However, I think this is
infinitely a better Superman movie and more entertaining.
(32:13):
And it's that movie. Like I remembered like there was
a lady who was like kind of upset when we went to our
showing of Man of Steel. And my youngest kid like to this
day has a bit of a callus towards Superman because she
hated sitting through that movieso much kind of thing.
But that is not going to be the case with this movie.
(32:34):
Like there is it just moves and it's propulsive and it's fun and
it's so sweet and charming too. And there's an adult sensibility
where that's where you can't call the movie childish because
of the kind of the geopolitical things that they play with and
(32:56):
they're all made-up. But at the same time it's like
it's squint and you'll see that in real life kind of thing.
And it's kind of interesting to think about inserting a
character like Superman into this, into this paradigm type of
thing. But while that's serving the
adults, the kids have loads and loads of things to latch onto
(33:18):
and the characters are super interesting and they're all
dynamic and there's just, there's color for days in this
movie. And you, you feel, you feel kind
of his joys and his pains and his losses and, and his
frustrations. And it's kind of, I don't know,
it's kind of cool to just have this good back to basics hero,
(33:42):
just a hero who's a hero becausehe's oriented the right way
first and foremost, and then he's a hero because of his
powers, not the other way around, right?
And so we've kind of had our journeys with the, the flawed
characters and on their, on their journeys and stuff.
And it's kind of neat that they're setting this up this
(34:03):
way. And I think it'll do a lot to
get people really excited as to where they're taking the DC
Universe, because like you said,Mr. C is vastly different than
anything that's come with ADC, hands down.
And it's quite different than what the MCU has done, too.
I'm pleasantly surprised that hereinvented the genre a bit.
(34:24):
And I think it'll serve it well. And yeah, I, I think the movie
will play. I think it'll play really well,
to be honest with you. MM Hmm.
Yeah, I know. Like obviously, like I, I
projections are projections, right?
Like they are what they are anybody She made a joke, but
it's I guess it oddly enough, actually is factually true.
(34:46):
The movie will open anywhere between 90 to 200 million.
I guess is is is is the real estimate.
I think that this movie is goingto open to 100 plus the number.
I'm not going to get that particular nor am I going to
bore any of our listeners with that, but I do think this movie
is going to open a hundred. I think you ask the average
person if they like this movie, you're going to get a thumbs up,
(35:09):
I think from the average person like this.
To me, I don't want to say maybeyou checks all the boxes because
everybody has different tastes, but I think it's going to check
enough of the right boxes for the average person.
Like you don't have to be comic book fans to really enjoy this
movie. And that's a refreshing change I
feel like for DC is that, you know, everybody knows Superman,
(35:29):
everybody knows that logo at a certain point.
You don't have to be a fan of this character to go into a
movie like this and enjoy. You can take your mother, you
can take your grandma, you can take your kid who's never maybe
watched a superhero movie before.
And I think I'll get a thumbs upon this movie, right?
Like, I didn't want to say I thank James Gunn for giving me
the Superman movie. I've always dreamt up 'cause I
(35:49):
love Man of Steel, I love Superman 78, I love Superman 2,
right? Like I love Superman the
animated series, but this is definitely the movie that he
gave me that I've been wanting to see.
This comic book. He's Superman integrated into a
well established, decent universe to the point where you
guys said it perfectly. This is a terrific launchpad for
(36:09):
this decent universe that we hope is going to grow and
thrive. And we make the drug all the
time on this show. Yeah, I am looking for him to be
with the guy with the pointy ears.
Now I am looking him to be Wonder Woman and Flash and I'm
looking him to be the guy that is the guy for many, many
hopeful years to come. And where this movie ends too.
We're not going to spoil on anything, but it's so exciting
(36:31):
and you cannot wait to see what comes next That that stand for
sure. So box office wise, I'm going to
remain hopeful. Like, you know, Carlos and I are
going to break it down. I think this does need to make a
substantial amount of light likethat.
There's no doubt in that. James's comments on the movie
needed to be a double and not a home run.
Still interesting, but if this movie ends up with A7 in front
(36:55):
of its global number, I'll be doing jumping jacks up and down.
If it falls a little bit short, I do think that this movie
should well exceed over 500 million.
And that's kind of like where mybenchmark is, is this is a movie
that should put the DCU in a prosperous place to continue and
move forward. So that's going to work where I
(37:17):
really land on that. Yeah, it needs to be Batman
Begins. Right Where it does solid
business, solid enough that theyspend the money on the next one,
but but everyone who discovers it is probably making plans to
to buy a ticket to the next one. It's all anecdotal, but like,
(37:37):
honestly, I've seen a lot of interest towards this movie from
people in my sphere that aren't interested, like people at work
kind of reaching out and aware of the movie and interested in
seeing it. Or like one of the wife's
friends was saying they're gonnaget a babysitter to go see it.
And they're pretty far from comic book people.
So I am firmly of the opinion that people kind of see one
(38:03):
movie every quarter. Like there, there's us that go
once a week, twice a week sometimes.
But yeah, you know, most people only go 3-4 times a a year and
if they're going to see a couplemovies in the summer, I I'm kind
of getting the sense that Superman is one that a lot of
people earmark to go see. So I think they did their job
with the marketing and yeah, we'll, we'll see how it plays
(38:26):
out. The reviews have been great.
Like it's certified fresh as of this recording so.
Well, it's in 86 right now with like 150 reviews.
So I don't see that really plummeting much.
I mean, maybe it maybe it can fall to an 80, which is a really
(38:50):
good number. And, and now again, you know how
we are, we're kind of hypocriteswith this Rotten Tomatoes thing.
When we when we want to use it, we use it.
When we don't want to use it, wedon't use it, right?
Only when it benefits. This is both scenario.
But in a, in a, in a scenario like this where you're launching
something, I mean, I do think itit it's to the.
(39:12):
It's a It's a great sign that most people.
Yeah, the numbers get right exactly.
I agree with Carlos, their theirmarketing has been really,
really, really great with this. It also helps that the cast is
absolutely charming on these interviews.
They've been wonderful. I know I, I WGN our our local
station here, Dean Richards, a big, big Superman fan.
(39:34):
He's had them on all week and they're just very, very, they're
sweet people. Rachel, Nick and David and even
the girl that plays the engineer, I don't know all their
names. And the girl that plays the
girl, I mean, they're just thought they're really great.
And I mean, they, you could tellthat they're not on this press
(39:57):
junket and they're tired and they're worn out.
Like there's a lot of enthusiasmcoming out of them.
And I think you can feel that they did have a great time
making this movie. And there was a lot of love, you
know, because you don't always see that.
You see them a lot of times you see these movies and they'll
interview people and they're going through the motions.
Or some of these actors and actresses can be a bit
(40:18):
pretentious or they seem like they're not really there even
though they're being interviewed.
This is quite the opposite. So I I believe, I believe this
thing doesn't have to do like 8900 million I I and I don't
even know if it doesn't it 5 or 6 that it would be considered a
(40:39):
flop. I don't think so.
I think this is the starting point.
I think it's all system goes from here.
I think there's been enough. Yeah, we're a little
presumptuous, too. We've got a four to five days.
I guess we'll regroup and see. I mean, we've sure, but this
isn't like The Flash. I know a lot of people are
comparing The Flash. I mean, The Flash you had nobody
promoted the movie, right? I mean, there was, I mean, you
(41:02):
had influencers that they were paying.
You had James Gunn and you had some, you know, Tom Cruise.
Yet they were trying to talk themovie up, but it's.
It's they were inviting people to an unfinished cut of the
movie. Yeah.
It's hard to it's hard to promote your movie when the
actual stars of the movie are not allowed.
Yeah, in that instance there, you know, and.
(41:24):
And that was that was the end ofsomething.
I don't think there was any hopethat that thing was ever going
to lead to anything. This is different.
And kudos to James Gunn. I mean, again, I man, he's he's
again, I, I've kind of, I've gotten tired of I, I wasn't a
real big fan of creature commandos and I'm not the
world's biggest peacemaker fan. I did enjoy the first season,
(41:47):
but it's not like I, I really was clamoring for a second
season. But man, when he's in his
element here and, and he's in his element with that R rated
stuff, I'm not saying that he does very well with that, but
this, this Guardians vibe, whichthis isn't Guardians, but this
guy really writes from the heart, very emotional.
(42:08):
And I again, I, I applaud him for this.
He did a great job with this movie.
He really did something that I thought was maybe not possible
and that was to make Superman interesting because I have kind
of been on that bandwagon. I thought Snyder did a good job
(42:29):
with Man of Steel. Then the third act came and then
we got BVS and the character wasjust not interesting in BVS,
right? Let's be honest.
I mean, it would it was a Batmanmovie, BVS, right?
I mean, honest to God, I mean, and whatever they cut out in
that theatrical caught it was all Superman.
But and I know what Snyder was trying to do with the arc and
(42:50):
all that, but then you got Zack Snyder's Justice League.
He's not even in that movie thatmuch Superman and I like.
So this is really for me as a, as a DC fan since 1974, I mean,
really since the Christopher Reeve movie, the, the, this is
like, this brings Superman to a whole new light for me of, of
(43:15):
what, what he could be going forward.
And again, I sound like a brokenrecord, but I, I, I almost felt
like I predicted the casting when I saw this guy.
But it's just beyond the looks here, right?
Because he does look like Superman, but he's just really
nuanced and plays the character extremely well.
(43:35):
I like when he even gets angry. It shows he's human, but he's
able to control that anger, right?
But he does get things bother him.
I think it was kind of cute. I think that's going to play
well to the general audience that you have the Super powerful
being Carlos. But he's just like us, man.
He's better than us because he'sgood.
He's he's more pure and altruistic than us, but those
(43:56):
little things still still get under skin social media.
So the dog you know and it's it's.
Just. Really, you know, so like, he
really David deserves a lot of credit.
I'm, I'm really on a high right now, but I think this casting of
(44:20):
a superhero could go down the realm of like a Hugh Jackman of
a Robert Downey Junior. You know, we talked about the
Batman and I still don't know that we've ever gotten the
definitive right. Like there's so many good ones,
but there have been so many guysthat have played Batman right,
Carlos and and they've all served the purpose.
(44:41):
But as I sit here today, like I,I, you know, we go through this,
it's hard to pick the best Batman because you're, you're
judging based on the movie, on the writing.
But this kids got a chance here going forward to be the the
Superman I think of of not only our generation, but really,
(45:02):
really going forward with this stuff.
It's good stuff. Oh yeah, well, and even just his
attitude, right. Like, I love that he's the he's
the first comic book actor in this kind of new crop.
In fact, even Christopher Reevesincluded, like who's come out
and been like, you know what, ifI get typecast, I don't care.
I'm happy to play this characterforever.
It it's a blessing. And then, you know, today
(45:25):
somebody asked him about what hewants fans to be like heading
into the opening weekend. He's like, just be kind to each
other. And if things are bothering you,
think of something nice you could do for somebody else.
And it's just like, those are the kind of things that you want
to see from your Superman. And I think he takes being a
role model seriously. And yeah, I, I wish this guy
(45:48):
nothing but the greatest successin the world.
And I think you'll get it. And like you were saying about
that cast, like Nicholas Holt was at the fan Expo here, and we
paid to get our picture taken with him.
And he introduces himself. He's like, hi, I'm Nick.
And I was like, yeah, I, I know I had to pay 100 bucks to come
meet you. That's amazing.
(46:09):
Oh, typical Lex Luthor, right? Still makes, still makes Japan.
Very, very kind. And you could tell that the guy
was just grateful that people were interested enough in him to
to come and meet his acquaintance even for a few
seconds kind of thing. So yeah, I, I hope that this
whole crew has nothing but the greatest success with this movie
(46:34):
and with everything they're doing.
And you know, we have a Supergirl movie that's in the
can, so it's kind of a nice position to be in as ADC fan
where you're not waiting for thereceipts to come in.
So they'll green light the next thing.
I'm hoping that at the end of this opening weekend we find out
what the movie subsequent to Supergirl is going to be.
(46:56):
Or maybe we'll find that out at New York Comic Con, which it
sounds like will be their next big promotion.
But. You think you might you think
you might have Aww or what do you think?
Maybe let's say this is a success, which I believe.
What do you what do you think the next big of the of the you
(47:20):
know, let's, let's just say thisnow.
So what do you what do you thinkit is Carlos who is Who's the
next big player to be announced? The next big player, like the
logic would say Batman, but withReeves stuff going on.
And I think because of the delayin that movie getting pushed
forward, I don't think that they're gonna cloud the waters
(47:42):
too much. So yeah, and Aquaman, you just
got so right the first time. The Flash, I think will always,
for the foreseeable future, justbe he'll be that guy that only
shows that he'll be the Hawkeye only shows up in the team up
stuff. So I think it's got to be Diana.
And based on how they handled Superman in this movie, I can't
(48:07):
wait to see what their writing crew comes up with for Wonder
Woman. And yeah, like, I think Titan's
doing something like that is waytoo ambitious at this point in
time. I agree.
I agree. Maybe a Green Lantern, like a
Jon Stewart movie. Like I, I think you'll see Jon
emerge from that TV show, so maybe they'll go big screen Jon
(48:31):
Stewart, Green Lantern and introduce your Green Arrow or
your Flash. You could bring them as side
characters. I will say this, I I'm excited
about Lanterns, but you know, wedon't we haven't seen much and
it's ATV show, but what we've seen last night, tonight I'm
(48:57):
pretty much it can it's going towork right, like we can make.
Some jokes so Lantern. Is a grounded.
You can see it now, but I don't believe.
That either. Right.
I believe it's going to be pretty intergalactic and we're
going to see a lot of stuff. So Superman was like, you know,
it just opened my eyes, right, Because we had to see it.
(49:17):
We we, we're sitting here now and I feel really good about
whatever they announced. But at the end of the day, we do
need the heavy hitters sooner rather than later.
And I, I think that the success we're going to see of this movie
will provide that. Carlos, I think we're going to,
we're going to get, we're going to get the next wave of
(49:38):
announcements. And I think it's going to be,
dare I say it might even be a little more refreshing and maybe
competitive with the doomsday and the Secret Wars.
Because I, I, I think that the way they're doing it, and I'm
(49:58):
not foolish enough to. Tell you that those aren't going
to. Be big movies what Marvel's
doing, but I I think this is a little fresher approach here and
a little bit done differently here and and and done again
there's a lot of heart and there's a lot of emotion in
these movies, which is which is something that I think the MCU's
lacked a little bit so we'll seewhat.
(50:20):
Happens. See What do you think?
What do you think the next big one is?
See, I think it has to be WonderWoman, I think.
I think there's going to be. There's such a hunger to see
this. Character back in prominence now
and like, you know, if Supergirlis actually bigger than, you
know, people think, you know, now you're really riding a hot
wave here. But I do do and it's one of
them. And I think that movie now can
be so much bigger than even thatfirst one was, depending on who
(50:44):
you cast too. That's the other thing too.
But I've seen like I do think like if there's anything I can
bet on a home run, I'm going to say it's Wonder Woman just on
the eye test alone and and the idea of where you can go with
that character. Now at this point, I would have
agreed with Carlos too. Like if Green Lantern wasn't ATV
show right now, Green Lantern can come out of the gate hot and
(51:04):
I mean like hot with a movie andis an intergalactic space
adventure. So I'm going to go Wonder Woman.
But I do that. We are in store for a lot of
great exciting things to come in.
Like now we got Superman on backSuper Bowls there.
Let's get Wonder Woman and let'sget Batman back in the fall
here. But I do want to point out one
thing. And then what we'll wrap up here
(51:25):
is I would implore everybody because I caught a glimpse of
this actually this morning because it's July 8th.
There's a this recording on July10th.
If anybody watches Good Morning America.
If you don't, you'll probably can catch it on YouTube.
Will leave, the son of the late Christopher leave is going to be
interviewing David Coins. What actually he did catch a
glimpse that it was a pretty emotional conversation those two
(51:48):
had. And David really looked up to
Christopher Reeve as like this icon and his blueprint.
It's just the idea of being ableto sit with his son.
And you know, like, I just thinkeverybody's probably going to
want to check it out because it seemed like it was a real
genuine conversation. So I'm looking forward to that.
To that. If anybody's wondering, yes, I
(52:10):
did cry during the movie severaltimes.
You can ask Mr. C which which points I might have cried in,
but you could probably use your inference clues on which scenes.
But I'm very proud of this movieand and, and I was very proud of
the experience that I got to have with it.
So thank you guys for, you know, obviously for coming on and, and
chatting with this movie. This was a stellar, stellar
(52:31):
conversation. I know we probably went on
longer than we thought, but that's what happens when you
love something and when you lovethe movie.
That's true. So incredible.
Incredible time, I hope. Everybody that is seeing the
movie, if you haven't seen it before and enjoys the movie.
And we will of course be back with a full spoiler review when
when Niko wants to come back andand join me and Mr. C back in
(52:53):
the sun here. But.
Until then, Mr. C, tell everybody where they can find
you, Sir. Yeah, you can find me on Twitter
at Ann Caruso. Junior Nice.
Carlos, tell everybody where they can find you.
Yeah, same place at the Canadiancaped.
Crusader yeah, and honestly, just look for Nick and Zeddie's
tweets and you'll find me not too far behind, so look up if
(53:17):
there's. A Michael.
Jackson gift you probably. Got my account if it's a Michael
Jackson if it's. Superman, if it's Batman, you'll
find him. No, of course.
Thank you guys. I'm on Twitter, letterbox at
Mczonic. I've had a bunch of other audio
reviews only inside our feed, but very much looking forward to
dive into this movie a lot more and looking forward to all the
(53:40):
discussions and podcasts that are going to come with this
movie as well. So that's going about do it,
man. That's our non spoiler reaction
on James Gunn Superman. We will catch you all in our
next episode for for I was goingto say Nico.
He's not here for Nico. So junior for Carlos.
I'm Nick Zenik, as Superman saysin the movie Look Up.
(54:31):
None.
