(00:26):
None. Hey everyone, welcome back to
the Vigilante 1939 podcast. I am 1/3 of the coast here at

(00:48):
Nick Zenik and I am back with two movies that I have just
recently seen. I'm going to be talking about
the roses and I'm talking about caught stealing.
So we are going to set off with the roses.
I saw this one a little bit early.
It's coming out this coming weekon.
It's directed by J Roach, who ifyou guys have seen movies like
Beat the parents, beat the Fockers, Austin Powers, those

(01:10):
kind of movies. That's what you're getting from
this one. It essentially is about it's a
launchy comedy about a couple who are going through this kind
of transition their in their lives.
It start off as a very like loving marriage, and then it
kind of quickly devolves a new this marriage of jealousy and
rage and heartbreak, because obviously it's commentating on

(01:34):
this idea that one one person ina marriage can't be more
successful than the other. We kind of play around with the
stereotypes that, you know, the the wife still has to be the one
that stays at home and takes care of the kids and the
husband's supposed to be the onethat has the more high paying
job because he's the one that supports you supposed to support
the family. So right off the bat, you know,

(01:56):
you have this Tony McNamara script, which if you guys have,
you know, he's worked a lot. We go go play at the most.
So he's written movies like the favorite and poor things.
So you know, you're going to geta lot of this like Launchy Dark,
twisted humor and and it kind oflike in in this comedy like
that. And that's what you get.
You know, you the movie itself actually has a great cast too.

(02:19):
You have Benedict coming back, you have Olivia Coleman, you
have Andy Samberg, Kate McCann and you have Allison Janney.
So you have a lot of recognizable faces in this
movie. You have a lot of actors that
are caliber caliber actors that are able to kind of showcase and
kind of lean in them. The comedy that's kind of like
needed for a movie like this. So while it is based off of a

(02:43):
novel too, so you guys have readthe novel that it is based off,
it's kind of like a remake of a of a previous movie and novel
and it's kind of playing all of those similar beats as well.
So while the movie itself may not be perfect, if you it's very
much reminiscent of like a classic studio comedy.
So this movie is like just under90 minutes.

(03:05):
So like maybe like 9095 ish minutes.
So the runtime I thought was perfect.
It kind of gets right to the point.
While it can be a little slow tokind of get to where we are,
these movies are right. You know, it's a journey, you
know, you're essentially along for this chaotic twisted by
that. We go on with this couple.
You have Benedict Cumberbatch, Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman

(03:27):
kind of embracing the like innerMr. and Missus Smith because
they're constantly going toe to toe with one another because
it's really an intoxicating marriage and it's on the the
brink of collapse. And we're kind of following
these two people as they're trying to navigate whether or
not they can survive their marriage.
And then you got some really bigtwist in the Got at the movie,

(03:49):
which is crazy. So this movie is very twisted
and it's commentating a lot on what I feel like is more
relevant today socially in termsof like whether or not people,
both people in a marriage can besuccessful or maybe one has to
be more successful than the other.
Then there's kids involved, right?
So there's there's a lot that they incorporate in this movie

(04:12):
and it and it's kind of clever, twisted way.
I don't keep using that word a lot, but that's really what this
is. I think that it works really,
really well and it works enough for what the movie is trying to
say and come across. So I actually had a really fun
time with it. There's a lot of scenes that
you're going to like literally laugh your ass off at.
It is that kind of movie and it's one that you can kind of

(04:35):
just shut your phone off, shut your brain off, whatever you
want to say, and just be alarmedfor the vibe that you're being
taken on. So overall, I had a pleasant
experience with this movie. I'm sitting at somewhere between
like a 77.5 out of ton. I wish we can get more studio
theatrical comedies that that kind of like really make its

(04:55):
existence known in terms of like, you know, I know they a
lot of them tend to get dumped on streaming and a lot of people
don't go see them. But this is one that, you know,
I don't really know if it is going to be that successful.
But in terms of like the template that this movie is
based off of, I think that this is exactly like the type of
comedy that eventually down the line, people are going to grow

(05:16):
to really appreciate and we kindof should want more of.
So overall, had a fun time with The Roses.
If you're looking for something to go watch this weekend and
it's light and it's fun and you want to go with some friends or
you want to make it a date nightmovie, I would I would give this
movie a thumbs up. So that is my thoughts on The
Roses. Let's now move over to a movie
that I recently recently had seen.

(05:38):
And kudos to Sony Pictures for sending me out to an early
screening of Caught Stealing. This is the latest Darren
Aronofsky movie essentially starring Austin Butler.
You have Zoe Kravitz, you have Regina King, Lee F Shriver,
Vincent D'onofrio, Matt Smith. Like, you have a lot of lot of
cool people in this movie. And essentially what this movie

(06:00):
is, is it is about Austin Butler's character who
essentially plays this Once Upona time baseball phenom who had
all the promises in the world. Something tragic happens to him
early on in his career, so he eventually has to transition
into a more lowlife living lifestyle in New York City, and

(06:22):
his gets whipped into this kind of sick, twisted drug thing
going on with his neighbor played by Matt Smith.
And essentially this movie is all about trying to escape from
the situation that Austin Butler's character has found
himself in. And right off the bat, you know,
if you've seen a Darren Aronofsky movie, you know, it's
very much like a Luka Guanino movie.

(06:45):
He he has a certain style and tendency.
Like, it's like a Darren Aronofsky movie.
If you've seen like Requiem for a Dream, if you've seen The
Wrestler, if you've seen Black Swan, if you've seen Mother, if
you've seen The Whale, you know this is a way different Darren
Aronofsky movie then even I was anticipating and I mean it in a
sense that because this feels like it's his most it's his

(07:08):
attempt at trying to be his mostfun.
Like I would say like this movieisn't any really sort of like
the movies that I just listed. It's very much oozing with 90s
grit and style. So this takes place in like the
late 90s. So this isn't like that
modernized 2020 setting here. So we're we're getting a lot of
contemporary 90s setting and things like that.

(07:30):
It's style. It's very much shot like a 90s
movie and even like the way it'spaced too.
It's a very much phonetically paced movie.
Like it's, things are moving really, really fast.
There's a lot of twists and turns that kind of come at you.
Some work better than others, but the cast is really what the
highlight is. Honestly, I feel like in this
movie, like the direction and the script is really nothing

(07:52):
flashy. I kind of maybe expected a
little bit more out of the writing personally, just because
of like what the cast that we had in this movie.
Not everything really lands, andto be honest, I was kind of
rolling my eyes at most of it, but I was always entertained.
That's really where I followed this movie.
I wish some of the people that we had in this cast got a little

(08:12):
bit more substantial things to work with.
But overall, I mean, like Zoe Kavitz was always a highlight,
even in the small that that should that we get her in Regina
King's fun and the role that shehas.
Matt Smith is great, but this movie is solely an Austin Butler
vehicle. So this is like a star making

(08:33):
movie for him and turns like he's continuing to kind of build
his resume. He wants to let you know that
he's here for the real deal. He's trying to flex his acting
chops a little bit. And this really is like your
classic low key movie star vehicle in terms of like, you're
just trying to showcase an actor's ability to carry a
movie. And that's really what all this

(08:54):
is. I mean, like, yes, there are
some steamy romancing early on with it with his character in
Zoe Crabb. It's like, give them that.
So this movie will make you feela certain type of way early on.
It's going to let all of you guys know that right off the
bat. But overall, while it's a little
bit messy and it's a little bit disjointed and not everything
fully lands. I was never born.

(09:15):
I had a fun time with this movie, even though I wish you
could have. The delivery of what they were
trying to do could have maybe landed a little bit better.
But you know, not all 90s movieswere like that as well.
So really kind of just have to go into this mindset that if you
just want to see Austin Butler and you're a fan of his, as you
should be, you're going to you're going to get what you
signed up for and you're going to get what you get at the door.

(09:37):
So overall, it's not perfect. It's not my favorite movie of
the year. It's not going to crack any top
ten list, I don't think. But it's a fun enough movies
considering we don't really havemuch going on or much being
released in theaters at the moment.
I think this movie would still be worth 1's time.
You know, if you're looking to make it a date night movie or
you're just looking to go with aThunder too, I do think that

(09:59):
enough people will walk out of the walk out of the theater at
least saying that they enjoy themselves.
For what? For what the type of movie that
this is. So overall, I enjoy cost
stealing. I'd probably give it like a
really solid 7 out of 10. If this was like letterbox scale
would probably be like a three out of five, which is still
solid considering we are kind oflike approaching the back half

(10:20):
of the year where we're getting more smaller scale, more
cinephile indie type cinema. Yeah.
So that's kind of like the the blink of the end of the summer
as we kind of transition into the back half of the year.
So overall, I would recommend both these movies, the Roses and
caught stealing if you're looking for some stuff to go
check out in theaters. Both of them I get a thumbs up
for. So go check them out and I'll

(10:42):
leave you my thoughts on these movies.
