A full reaction to the first round of the College Football Playoff, breaking down Alabama’s comeback win at Oklahoma, Miami’s defensive slugfest against Texas A&M, Ole Miss overwhelming Tulane, and Oregon coasting past James Madison. Each game is examined through the lens of turnovers, special teams, line-of-scrimmage control, and in-game momentum swings.

The episode also tackles the nonstop Notre Dame hypotheticals that dominated social media, revisits the recurring Group of Five debate, and explains why Tulane and James Madison never truly had a path against elite competition. The show wraps with thoughts on where the CFP is headed, how the sport is splitting into tiers, and what this opening weekend revealed about playoff structure, parity, and perception.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
On today's pod, Alabama comes back from the dead. Notre
Dame hypotheticals run wild. Miami in Texas, A and M
didn't score. The G five narrative. The anti G five
narrative continued over the weekend. It's football. I've been watching

(00:21):
it for forty years? Are you kidding me? You're listening
to Winning Cures Everything? Game day, baby, Wake up or
get out. Here's your host, my confident young man, a
deferm aplay. Gary Siegers welcome in Winning Cures Everything. It's
a college football podcast. I'm your host, Gary Seegers at

(00:44):
GARYWC on all the different socials, most active on X.
If you want to reach out the old school way,
we still got that Gary at Winning curesorverything dot com.
And what a weekend it was for the CFP first
Round College Football Playoff for twenty twenty five. I began
this weekend and boy, the Notre Dame hypotheticals were running

(01:07):
wild on Friday and on Saturday. Any inkling of a
flaw in a team and you could find the tweet
almost verbatim every single time Notre Dame would have beaten
these teams. Notredame would have beat this team Notre Dame
would have lose put up a fight. It was hilarious,

(01:29):
absolutely hill because you could see it coming from a
mile away. It was the same thing last year when
SMU didn't look very good against Penn State, all the
Alabama fans immediately jump in. Alabama would have beaten this team.
That's not what this is about. Once the bracket is set,
it is what it is. These are the games that
we got, and to me, Friday and Saturday not too bad.

(01:54):
I know that the games with Tulane and James Madison
were not great. I know that, but that's what we got.
We got some pretty good quarterfinal matchups Alabama, Indiana, Miami,
Ohio States that's not terrible, Georgia Old Miss and Oregon

(02:15):
Texas EC. I mean, these are good, fun matchups. Like
I am all in on seeing these games. These could now,
they could end up being blowouts, but the build up
to these games, I think is going to be very
interesting and that's what we were looking for. Right you
get through the first round, you're gonna have some duds.

(02:37):
But we got two pretty good ball games in Norman
and in College Station, So I'm good with that. Let's
go through. Let's kind of recap it real quick. This
won't be a long podcast because you guys have already
heard everybody else talk about everything under the sun. Alabama
thirty four Oklahoma twenty four. Bama was explosive in the
second and third quarters and Oklahoma's special teams in defense

(03:01):
failed them basically. I mean, it was what it was like.
This game was almost the inverse of what happened in Tuscaloosa.
Oklahoma outgained Alabama. Alabama had less turnovers. This time. Oklahoma
was the one that threw the pick six. Alabama had

(03:23):
special teams, you know, punt problems. Oklahoma this time bobbled
a punt, got it blocked, led to an Alabama field goal.
Bama made both of their field goals, Oklahoma missed two
of theirs. It was just special teams and turnovers are
such a huge thing. I believe. Oklahoma was thirty two

(03:44):
and seven at home in the past thirty nine games
leading up to this one, and it was the first
time that a road team had won a college football
playoff game. Now, we only had four of them last year,
and the matchups were not exactly perfect, but but we
got there, so, you know, very interesting to say the least.

(04:10):
When Oklahoma went up seventeen to nothing with ten minutes
and fifty one seconds left in the second quarter, the
yardage was Oklahoma one fifty six Alabama twelve. From that
point until Alabama went up thirty four to twenty four,
Alabama outgained Oklahoma two sixty to one fifty, pretty wild

(04:31):
like so from the from the ten minute mark in
the second quarter until early in the fourth quarter or
maybe midway through the fourth quarter two sixty to one fifty.
And that was much more in line with what happened
in Tuscaloosa. Uh. The more surprising part about this. Alabama
was two of twelve on third down, you know, did

(04:54):
much better on fourth down and Oklahoma, you know, basically
fifty percent on downs and it didn't matter. It was
crazy huge catches by Brooks and Jeremy Bernard. That Jeremy
Bernard catch at the five yard line was absolutely incredible.
Had a thirty yard run by Daniel Hill. Alabama's backup

(05:16):
running back jam Miller didn't play very much, but he
did play, but Daniel Hill. That thirty yard run was
the longest run for Alabama from scrimmage since Week two
of the season against Louisiana Monroe. Just bananas that this
team is able to do what they have done thus

(05:38):
far with basically no running game. I mean they that
was the longest run that they had on the night,
and the longest run that they've had in three months.
I mean, that's that's bananas. Daniel Hill is showing some promise,
but boy, he's got to work on his pass protection.
That's why you gotta play jam Miller. It is what

(05:59):
it is. Ryan Williams, that was a big point of contention.
He I thought it was a hamstring or a hip problem,
something along those lines. They're playing him in the slot.
I don't know if that's exactly where he needs to be,
but he has got to get his confidence back in

(06:21):
his hands, Like I've noticed him doing this multiple times
where he tries to catch the ball with his body
and you know, I mean that thing just bounces right off.
It's crazy. So I'm not sure what to think of that.
I Mean, he's still an option, he's still out there,
but it's very obvious that it's Brooks and Bernard and
Koevos and Isaiah Horton and then Ryan Williams is down

(06:45):
the list somewhere, which is just nuts to think about.
Oklahoma started with a brilliant game plan. Early ran some
of the gust miles on stuff that Florida State showed
him in week one, and it worked almost too afection,
because you know that you don't want John Matier sitting
back there trying to read a defense. I mean you

(07:06):
saw it late in the second quarter when he threw
that pick six. You can bait him into stuff, you
can trick him, and I mean, really, once Obama got
pressure on my tier, he was completely lost. So after
the scripted stuff, like they didn't really have any answers,

(07:28):
Oklahoma's defense could not get pressure. And then the special teams,
I mean, the goodness gracious, the kicker, Tate Sandel that
was something else. He misses one, and I think it
was the wind. I really think that he missed that
one because of the wind. And then he I think
he kind of freaked out on the second one because

(07:50):
he he wanted to make sure that he kicked it
straight and Mike punched it, but the punch he didn't
get enough power behind it, so he go short. So
he missed two field goals in this game, and he'd
only missed one field goal on the entire season, and
that was all she wrote. Alabama kneels it out. I mean,

(08:10):
that was a ballgame, but that was uh. I mean,
you could tell what Brevvinnables was trying to do there. Okay,
he missed the first one. We're gonna get this next
one and then you know, we'll try it on sidekick
because you had to have two scores. But man, missing
those two field goals absolutely massive. In the first game,

(08:30):
you know, Bama misses that one field goal going into
halftime and ended up losing the game by two points.
So Tate Sandell hit four field goals in Tuscaloosa against Alabama.
Just bananas, Just bananas. So let's move along. Miami ten,

(08:57):
Texas A and M three and Miami won the turnover
battle three to one. They missed a bunch of field goals,
but it was what it was like. This Miami defense
was legit. They were awesome like that. Ruben Bain was

(09:18):
an absolute terror. He had three sacks, he had four
tackles for loss, and Malachi Tony to me, felt like
the best player on the field. But I mean it
took until the end for him to get into the
end zone. The play in the second half where he
or sorry, second quarter where he returns the punt and

(09:39):
then he trips. You could almost feel like that was
a at least a four point swing, and it ended
up being a seven point swing because they're all the
way down at the A and M twenty five yard line.
They can't get into the end zone. They try field goal,
and then they missed the field goal, and it's just bananas.

(10:01):
These were two really good defenses that knew what they
were doing, but it felt like Miami had the edge
at the line of scrimmage basically all day. So Miami's
running game, I mean, they were just lights out, like
six point three yards per rush, and yeah, Fletcher had
a fifty six yarder, but it just felt like they

(10:23):
were going to spring one at some point. A and
M only two and a half yards per rush. Just
not good, not good, But yeah, Miami should have had
the lead throughout this thing. Missed three field goals in
the game. A and M did miss a twenty two
yard field goal. I say miss I mean, you know,
I believe Bain got that one. But wind was a

(10:45):
huge factor in this game. Neither team could throw the
football well because the wind gusts were just outrageous, Like
everything about this was, you know, and you would hope
that as the home team that you would have the
advantage for something like that, but it did not come
to fruition. Marcel Reid kind of curious what they're going

(11:08):
to do with him going forward. Colin Klein was able
to work an offense that fit him, but he has
had multiple multi interception games and has not thrown for
a ton of yardage, and to be honest, it was
always kind of boom or bust with him anyway. Like
their passing success rate is not good, but they are

(11:30):
kind of explosive, so they've got weapons and if they
can ever get it to them, then they make huge plays.
But you know, I said on Twitter that our ex
excuse me, that this was the inverse Texas, A and M.
I'm sorry, the inverse Notre Dame because Notre Dame lost
their first two games of the year and then went out,

(11:52):
and then A and M won their first eleven games
of the year and then lost out, like I would say,
lost to the two best teams that they played this year.
But then they gets into the hypothetical, you know, was
Texas better than Notre Dame? And blah blah, blah blah blah,
who knows, who knows? I don't feel like getting into

(12:12):
that Ole Miss forty one to two lane ten and
they're in a whole lot to say about this one.
This was a carbon copy of the game back in September.
That was a forty five to ten game, this one
forty one to ten. These were not the same caliber
of player on the field for these two teams. From
the time that Ole Miss got up fourteen to nothing,

(12:36):
it never felt like they were in any danger at all.
I mean, it was just you kind of knew it
was going to be name your score kind of things.
The biggest question coming out of it is how healthy
is Gowan Lacy? Right, the running back for Old Miss.
Big drop off from him to the backup are backups,

(12:57):
I would say, like he he's a huge, huge part
of that offense, and yes, almost does throw the ball
a lot, but it all is kind of based on
what he's able to do. So I'm curious. You know. Luckily,
they've got two weeks. You know, it's January first and
the Sugar Bowl against Georgia, so they've got plenty of

(13:18):
time to get on that tu lane I didn't expect
much out of them. I don't think anybody expected much
out of them. I was surprised that there was anybody
that was picking Tulane to stay close in this game.
And I understand that with the coach leaving and all
that kind of stuff, but I mean that happened three
weeks ago. Like that, I'm pretty sure everybody's kind of

(13:42):
over it, Like everybody knows what the situation is, and
Lane Kiffen was not that entire team. So I had
a feeling that it would turn this way and show
enough basically carbon copy from that early game. So rematch
went the same way. Imagine Oregon fifty one James Madison

(14:05):
thirty four. Oregon took their foot off the gas, right,
I mean, this thing was thirty four to six at
the half. Oregon scored on their first five possessions, and
they played mostly backups in the second half. Like this thing.
It was forty eight to thirteen and Oregon was trying
to get into the end zone to go up fifty

(14:26):
five to thirteen and more through an interception at the
James Madison three, and then they got outscored twenty one
to three after that, Like it just the fact that
James Madison covered was pretty wild. It was the perfect
sabing game. Like I'm certain that some of you remember,

(14:47):
because Dan Lanning is gonna love this. Right. You win
the game, you advance, you get to play again, but
you didn't look good at the end, and you get
to harp on them for two weeks about how they
didn't finish. So there's motivation there. You're not feeling good,
You're feeling like this kind of feels like a loss.

(15:09):
Even though we won the game by three scores, we
still didn't play well at the end. And it is
what it is. So yardage in this game ended up
five fourteen to five h nine. James Madison put up
two hundred and nine yards in the fourth quarter when
this thing was already over. Like, it's just the fact
that Oregon score touchdowns on the first five drives. That

(15:32):
kind of lets you know everything that you need to
know about this. The quality of competition was not close,
not even close. So the narrative that came out of
this is mostly about the G Five's right. I don't
have a problem with them being in this thing. The
rules are set up the way that they are. These

(15:52):
two teams did what they were supposed to do, and
really everybody was talking about wanting to give these teams
a chance, right, James Madison only had one loss on
the season, and oh, I can't believe it would have
been a theoretical between or a hypothetical between two Lane
and James Madison forever. But you know, you got to

(16:16):
see them both against good competition. And here's the other
part of this. If there's ever going to be a
Cinderella thing, you would have to have Two Lane and
James Madison play, you know, Oklahoma or Alabama or something
like that, or Miami or Texas A and M like
maybe the teams that were not quite as good, but
Ole Miss and Oregon were a combined twenty two and

(16:38):
two on the season. So these were the best teams
outside of conference champions and these G five teams are
never going to beat those teams, but they got a shot.
I know everybody's talking about it that you're not gonna

(16:59):
have two thousand and seven s and UCF, you're not
gonna have O seven Boise like it's just that stuff's
not gonna happen anymore. And that's okay, But you know,
the TV we can talk about the TV schedule later.
The best games on Friday night and Saturday morning is
just dumb, but when you're scheduling up against the NFL,

(17:24):
it is what it is. So we noticed a big
divide in the sport this weekend. And eventually we're gonna
get to where there's the Super Conference and everybody else.
But we're not there yet, so we will continue to
do these things. All right. That is gonna wrap things
up today. I told you not a long one, but
a good recap kind of give you an idea of

(17:45):
where we are headed. I will be going over the
CFP games in a separate podcast. Gonna have more Bowl
games coming up this week as well, so make sure
you are subscribed, leaving a nice five star review, and
of course make sure you are subscribed on the YouTube
