Speaker 1 (00:01):
I often get asked
Neil, what can I do to further
improve my LinkedIn profile?
What can I do to broaden myreach, grow my network, my
engagement, establish thoughtleadership?
There's actually one killerthing that you can do on
LinkedIn.
That is really, really easy todo, but very few people know
about it.
Well, I'm going to teach youthe air quotes secrets about
(00:25):
this trick and thisfunctionality and describe all
the features in full detail, including how to actually turn
this feature on, in this nextepisode of the Your Digital
Marketing Coach podcast.
(01:20):
Hey everybody, this is yourdigital marketing coach, neil
Schaefer and welcome to theYouTube, neil Schaefer, and
welcome to the latest episode inthis podcast which, as your
digital marketing coach, explores best practices and
(01:41):
tries to provide you verytactical and strategical advice
for all of your digital contentinfluencer and social media
marketing.
There is a lot to cover and Iwant to make sure that no
digital marketing stone goesunturned.
All right, today we focus onone of my loves, which is
LinkedIn, because I wrote myfirst two books on LinkedIn.
(02:04):
Now, for those of you that havebeen listening to this podcast
for a while, you probably know, starting about two months ago, i
have begun to live stream eachone of these podcast episodes.
What this means is, whether Iam recording solo or I am with a
guest, you can actually consumethe content first by following
(02:26):
my YouTube channel over atyoutubecom slash Neil Schaefer,
or connecting with me onLinkedIn and liking my Facebook
page, because I am also livestreaming simultaneously on
YouTube, linkedin and Facebook.
Now, you know that I've beendoing that for a while.
If you're a listener, what I'mgoing to be doing this time is
actually, for the first time, ofactually repurposing a YouTube
(02:49):
video into a podcast episode.
Now, if you are notexperimenting, you're not
growing, and if you are notrepurposing, you are not going
to grow.
What YouTube has allowed me todo something that has been very
hard for me to visualize in apodcast which is to provide you
a step-by-step tutorial.
(03:09):
Youtube is really good for howto's and step-by-step tutorials,
right, so why don't I take thatsame idea into a podcast
episode?
And that is the thought process.
Now, i've tried to clean upvarious things that are
obviously out of place in apodcast, but I would really love
to hear your opinion.
Does this work or not as apodcast episode?
I think it does.
(03:30):
I think it actually opens up anew door of a lot of different,
very, very educational andactionable content that I can
provide you here in a podcastformat.
But you are going to be thebest judge of that, and I would
really appreciate your feedback.
Obviously, neil Schaefercomslash contact.
You know, contact me on thesocials.
If you're on my email list, send me an email.
(03:51):
Either way, i would love to getyour feedback on this.
So today we talk all aboutLinkedIn Creator Mode.
It is one of my most favoritetopics because so few people
understand it.
I think, once you understand itand you continue listening to
the end of the podcast, where Iam going to help you
step-by-step implement all thedifferent features and benefits
(04:12):
of LinkedIn Creator Mode.
I think you'll see that it isreally the best new feature of
LinkedIn in quite some time, andI would say, a few years.
I think it is that important.
Whether you are obviously abusiness owner, entrepreneur,
content creator, you know thename is LinkedIn Creator Mode,
but you don't have to be what wewould call a content creator to
take advantage of it.
(04:32):
Anybody well, any person cantake advantage of it, and every
single one of you listening tothis podcast, i want to make
sure that, by the end of this, you are already turning Creator
Mode on and you're using it toyour advantage.
All right.
Well, even if you already haveLinkedIn Creator Mode on, i
think you're going to learn afew things about it in this
(04:53):
podcast.
So keep listening and let'sjump straight into LinkedIn
Creator Mode.
Linkedin Creator Mode whatexactly is it?
Why should you use it?
What are all the differentbenefits?
And then, most importantly, howdo we turn it on?
Is it free?
Do we have to pay money?
I'm gonna walk you through andanswer all of those questions.
(05:13):
So let's first start with whatexactly is LinkedIn Creator Mode
Now?
LinkedIn did not always havethis feature.
It is relatively new.
Now, when I say relatively new,i'm talking post COVID, and I
wanna give you a little bit ofhistory, because I think this is
really important to understandthe full benefits and future
potential that LinkedIn CreatorMode can have for you.
(05:35):
So it was March 31st 2021,where LinkedIn said, and I quote
at the heart of our ecosystemis our creator community.
People love to see creators.
This is LinkedIn, by the way,not TikTok or Instagram or
Facebook.
People love to see creatorsgive their take on what's
happening in the news or shareinsights into a specific
industry, whether it's a post, avideo, an article or even a
(05:59):
comment.
So if you are creating contenton LinkedIn which is posting or
even commenting, you areconsidered a creator on LinkedIn
.
If you want to publish contenton LinkedIn, then you are also
considered a creator.
So Creator Mode is not just forthese famous influencers and
other people that we callcontent creators.
(06:21):
Something else LinkedIn saidthat day was if you want to
build your following and engagewith an audience on LinkedIn,
creator Mode could be the rightfit for you.
Who doesn't want to build afollowing and engagement on
LinkedIn, right?
They also said interesting datapoint here 50% of member
follows.
You can connect with someone onLinkedIn.
You can also follow themwithout connecting, and this is
(06:41):
going to be really importantpiece of information to
understand as I go through thisvideo.
50% of member follows come fromprofile views.
Someone goes to your profile, they find you on search, they
hear about you, whatever it is,and then they end up following
you.
So with Creator Mode, whathappens is that your primary
profile action updates, insteadof the default being connects,
(07:04):
it goes to follow And this helpsyou grow your audience.
In addition and I think this isreally really interesting
Creator Mode will make memberseligible for search and
discovery results downstream, helping creators get discovered
and grow their audience, meaningthat if you are a creator and
you are in LinkedIn Creator Mode, then that gives your content
(07:27):
that you publish a better chanceof being discovered on LinkedIn
in the feed than if you don'thave Creator Mode on.
So this is an absolute nobrainer.
But wait, there is more.
That was 2021.
A year later, linkedinannounced on March 30th 2022,
that more than 5.5 millionpeople across the globe turned
(07:49):
on the feature.
Now LinkedIn has I don't know 6, 700, 800 million users.
That is a small fraction Now.
That was a year ago, so I'massuming, with time, more and
more people turn it on.
But I'll tell you and I'm gonnashow you how to do this search
yourself that there's still alot of people that haven't
turned this on, which means moreopportunity for you, my viewer.
(08:10):
Now, those who have turned onCreator Mode have seen a nearly
50% increase in the number ofpeople that follow them And a
nearly 30% increase over thepast year in the engagement on
content created by people withCreator Mode turned on.
So Creator Mode turned on morefollows, more engagement and
(08:30):
check this out an 89% increasein the number of subscriptions
to newsletters.
This is one of the otherbenefits of Creator Mode that
I'm going to get intomomentarily Now, if that wasn't
enough, a few months later,we're still like a year ago,
june 9th 2022.
And this is the last piece ofdata, because I think it's
really important to understandthe data to understand the full
(08:51):
impact and potential thatLinkedIn Creator Mode has for
you.
That 18% of all follows onLinkedIn.
Now they mentioned 50% camefrom profile views.
Now there's an 18% came fromLinkedIn search, and they said
that's why we've made a numberof improvements to how creators
like you show up in searchresults.
Now, if someone searches for aspecific person, we've made it
(09:12):
easy to one click follow themwithout needing to leave the
search experience.
And if that's not enough, likeeasier to follow straight from
search results.
If someone searches for aspecific company or topic, we'll
show profiles of creators whodiscuss those subjects and make
it simple to follow those peoplewith a single click.
(09:33):
So LinkedIn Creator Mode overall, generally speaking, you're
going to get broader coverage, broader followers, broader
engagement, broader visibility.
But when you hone in onspecific subjects, your specific
niches, it becomes even morepowerful.
And I'm going to tell youexactly how to do that in one
second.
And it says if you have aCreator Mode turned on and your
(09:55):
profile's public visibility ison, as it should be, when a
LinkedIn member invites you toconnect, we'll automatically
have them to start following you, regardless of whether or not
you accept their connectionrequest.
This means they'll start seeingyour public post updates in
their feed without needing towait for a response from you on
the initial connection request.
So you don't even have toconnect with them, but they
(10:17):
still become your followers.
And this is how, even thoughyou may not know, but LinkedIn
has a connection limit of 30,000, which I'm actually at, and I'm
constantly deleting inactiveprofiles and adding in new
people that want to connect withme, but they don't have that
for followers.
So you can begin toexponentially grow way more
followers than you haveconnections, and that's how your
(10:38):
influence and visibility on theLinkedIn platform actually
increases.
So let me talk about I alreadyhinted at some of these, but I
want to go into some of thespecific benefits of Creator
Mode.
So, first of all, you're goingto notice that there is a
normally on anyone's profilethat does not have Creator Mode
on, you will see a connectbutton.
(11:01):
If you have Creator Mode on,like Deb, i just recently
interviewed her on my podcastand there's actually a live
stream we did together righthere on my YouTube channel.
It is now follow.
Now you may be wondering whatif I want to connect with Deb?
Well, you still can.
You just got to go to more andthen connect.
You got to know to do that.
But this big blue follow buttonis going to entice people to
(11:22):
following without necessarilyconnecting, and that's how you
build way more followers andconnections, because you can
follow anyone you want.
This person may not accept yourconnection request, but they
can't reject your follow, andthat's one of the mechanisms
that LinkedIn uses to getcreators more followers.
Now, when someone sends thatconnection request, they
automatically follow you.
(11:42):
I mentioned that Even if youdeny the request, if you archive
that request that they sent toconnect with you, they are still
going to follow you, which ispretty cool, all right.
Second thing I talked aboutLinkedIn wants to give creators
greater visibility for theircontent, but it should be in
their niche.
How does LinkedIn know yourniche?
Well, it's really easy to seehere.
(12:04):
If I go to my profile, you willsee here, and anyone who has
Creator Mode turned on has thesehashtags.
Talks about blogging, linkedincontent marketing, influencer
marketing and social mediamarketing.
So immediately when we are insomeone's profile, we
immediately know what they'reabout.
(12:24):
Linkedin knows what you'reabout and you bet that if I send
out content using thesehashtags, linkedin is
immediately going to associatethat I'm probably an expert in
one of those areas andimmediately going to give me a
little more visibility, becauseyou can only choose up to five
hashtags, right?
So it's similar to how, with awebsite, you have a meta title,
(12:44):
meta description for your homepage.
There's only so many charactersyou can fill in, but if that
includes influencer marketingand you blog a lot about
influencer marketing, chancesare you're going to get more
authority on search engines forinfluencer marketing content
versus content that may not bepart of your meta title, meta
description to a certain extent.
So that's how that works And ifyou were curious, you go.
(13:07):
it's really really easy to sayyou know what I don't want to do
?
social media marketing.
I want to add another hashtagAnd it's really interesting
because it'll show you sort ofwhat are the most popular, like
Google suggests.
It'll show you, like, what arethe most popular hashtags.
I'm going to go back to socialmedia marketing.
Interestingly enough, there'ssomeone misspelled social there,
but that's how you are able tocreate these five hashtags.
Really really easy to do.
(13:28):
All right.
Number four is that you can adda custom website link.
So you may not know this, butif we go further down in my
profile, you're going to seethis.
If you click it, it's going togo to my website, right, and
you'll see it forcom.
Well, that's pretty cool, andAll I need to do here is go to
my edit and, at the very bottom,if you have Creator Mode turned
(13:51):
on, you will be able to add aweb, so I could add a lead
magnet Hey, download my freebook, sign up for a new course,
buy my new book, whatever it is.
You can add it there And thenboom, it's going to show up
right here.
I'd say that's another really, really huge benefit of the
Creator Mode that LinkedIndidn't even talk about when I,
you know, described their, theirpress releases and blog posts
(14:12):
announcing all these features atthe beginning.
So that is a really killer, killer functionality.
Without even having to gofurther down in my profile,
they're already going to seewhat I'm about and they're able
to immediately go to my websiteand follow me.
I'm obviously editing my ownprofile so you don't see the
follow button there, but youwould see it under normal
circumstances.
All right, another interestinglittle tweak is that you'll
(14:34):
notice, if you go down, that Ihave the featured and activity
sections above my about section.
In a LinkedIn profile withoutCreator Mode, the about section
would come first and then youhave your featured and activity.
Now the featured is reallycritical because this is where
you can put your lead magnets, the main things you want to
(14:55):
promote.
Up to three of these are goingto be visible at a time.
You can add more and you canscroll through them.
But this is a killer featurethat says, hey, the minute
someone goes below your profile, let's go back to Deb, let's see
if she has it enabled.
The minute someone goes down, you know, in your profile
they're immediately going to seethese.
So that's another really, really cool benefit of being in
LinkedIn Creator Mode.
(15:17):
Now, some of the other thingsyou can do is you can do a
LinkedIn Live, and that's what Iwas going to hear.
This is a previous LinkedInLive that I did.
So you cannot do a LinkedInLive right now unless you're in
Creator Mode.
So the idea is that and youalso can't do a LinkedIn Live
from LinkedIn itself You have togo through a third party app.
I'm a huge fan of StreamYard andI, you know, i started live
(15:41):
streaming just a YouTube onStreamYard.
It's like, why don't I doLinkedIn and Facebook as well?
And actually, when you create alive stream in StreamYard and
you connect LinkedIn andLinkedIn confirms you have
Creator Mode on and you have theLinkedIn Live function.
Howdy on It.
Actually, once you schedulethat LinkedIn Live, it actually
creates an event in LinkedIn.
That event actually sends out alittle post And so people can
(16:03):
like it, people can comment onit and obviously, about a number
of people say Hey, neal, inoticed you live in my feed
today, so it does give youability to get extra visibility.
And if you're already doinglive streaming, right, it makes
sense to also publish that onLinkedIn as well.
I find I get as much, if notmore, engagement on my live
(16:23):
streams from LinkedIn than I doon YouTube or Facebook, for that
matter.
So that is LinkedIn Live.
Another functionality just forLinkedIn Creator Mode users.
We also have the LinkedInnewsletter.
Now I have been publishingLinkedIn newsletters.
You'll notice I have 11editions.
I just published one an hourago, so I've been publishing
these Basically.
(16:45):
I have a weekly newsletter Isend out through ConvertKit.
Well, why don't I just copy andpaste that and put it on to my
LinkedIn?
And that's exactly what I havebeen doing.
Now there's some tweaks I needto do, but if you subscribed to
my newsletter, go toNealShaffercom and fill that out
or, you know, follow mynewsletter here.
You'll see I have 6,109subscribers.
That's not bad.
It takes a long time to buildan email list of 6,109
(17:09):
subscribers, so you may startout with 100, 200, 500, 1,000,
but it's another channel foryour content.
So you'll notice if you see mynewsletter, it is basically the
same content I am copying andpasting.
I'm tagging people withinLinkedIn And, like I said, it's
more visibility.
Linkedin is also sending thisout as an email.
(17:29):
Thank you to those that aresubscribed.
I don't know if it goes out toeverybody, but I have noticed
that I receive my own and thisis a really, really easy thing
to do.
This is like a no-brainer, andthe other thing they allow you
to do that they just added is inyour featured section you can
now add the newsletter Soimmediately you wanna get people
subscribed to it and then boom, they can do it right from
(17:50):
looking at your profile.
Now I know this goes beyondLinkedIn Creator Mode, but if
you're curious how to develop aLinkedIn newsletter, i think I
already gave you the advicethere And if I was to go back
into where I am here, let me goback to my home screen here So
you see where it says writearticle.
Right, you click on writearticle And you can also do
(18:12):
LinkedIn newsletter from yourcompany page, but company pages
don't get much engagement onLinkedIn, so obviously I'm gonna
do this from my personalprofile.
You go next and then boom, thisis where you cut and paste
everything in.
You want to upload a photo.
I'm a big unsplash user, soI'll use a royalty free.
I'm actually a subscriber toUnsplash Plus.
I'm actually paying them moneyevery month to get access to
(18:35):
some exclusive Getty images thatUnsplash also has.
But you upload an image here, this image becomes the header
that you see here.
That also gives some visualappeal when it goes out into
your feed, and then youbasically write the newsletter.
Now there's some things here.
You can add an image, a videoslides if you wanted to do that,
(18:56):
links, code snippets I have anexperiment with code snippets,
with adding my own podcastsnippet, but I believe it's
available to do.
But it is really reallyintuitive, really really easy to
do.
You press next.
Let me just add a title righthere.
This would be the subject linefor my newsletter.
So we add a title, we pressnext and then this will publish
(19:17):
as a newsletter.
It'll go out of my feed andthen the email will go out to
those people I think by default, unless they have that feature
or setting turned off.
So that is how it is very, veryeasy to create a LinkedIn
newsletter.
I've seen some people just do aweekly blog post or a weekly
video as a newsletter.
So you don't have to have aformal weekly newsletter.
You can use it as a way to givea weekly update, like a blog
(19:39):
post or a video or a podcastepisode, and you put in 100, 200
, 300 words.
You could even use chat GPT tohelp you, because this isn't
necessarily to rank right.
So flesh out some content, summarize it and then, hey, just
check out the full video, gohere Very, very easy thing for
you to do.
So another great benefit of theLinkedIn Creator Mode.
(20:00):
So let's keep going.
Now We also have LinkedIn AudioEvent.
Now, this is not something Itake advantage of, but let me
just go back here And this iswhere I'm able to access all the
Creator tools I have, andyou'll see that there's this
Audio Event.
Now, the Audio Event issomething I haven't done.
They started this, launched it,when you know Clubhouse was a
(20:22):
big thing.
I don't know how many people doit, but it is possible to do an
Audio Event if you are aLinkedIn user.
So if you're big on Clubhouse, you might want to check that out
.
All right, there's also somecreator analytics that LinkedIn
gives you.
So the analytics you see aboutyour posts are more on par with
what a LinkedIn company pageanalytics would be.
So that's pretty cool.
You get additional insight.
(20:43):
You also get a follow buttonwhich you could put on your
website if you wanted to, justlike those old follow me on
Twitter buttons.
I don't do that, but, hey, youcould do that And you become
more discoverable in searchresults.
So this is an example.
I just did a search for myself.
It's pretty cool, and when I doa search for Neil, that Neil
Patel comes up, but you'll seethat his hashtags come up and
(21:03):
you'll see that his followercount comes up.
Compared to two people.
Neil is actually a good friend.
I'm following this other Neilas well.
You can see how much morevisibility you get.
You get those hashtags, youknow whether this person is
relevant to you or not And yousee the social proof, the
credibility that comes withhaving all those followers.
So that's a pretty coolfunctionality, i would say.
(21:24):
About the creator mode and beingdiscoverable in search results,
and I will say that LinkedInhas promised and I'm going to
quote them you become eligibleas a creator in creator mode.
You become eligible to befeatured as a suggested creator
to follow, so that potentialfollowers can find you and your
content across LinkedIn.
(21:44):
So, like I said, there are someadditional friends with
benefits.
Additional, you know, icing onthe cake benefits that LinkedIn
creators ie those that haveLinkedIn creator mode turn on
will have the opportunity togain should you turn it on.
So why would you not turncreator mode on?
I don't know, i think it's justyou didn't know, but I'm hoping
(22:05):
by the end you are ready toturn it on And, ladies and
gentlemen, it is really reallyeasy to turn on.
Let me just go back to the home.
You'll want to click here, which gives you access to your
profile.
You want to go down here whereit says resources and these are
private to you, and this iswhere you're going to be able to
say creator mode on or off, soyou get your analytics there,
and then here is where you'll beable to turn it on or off.
(22:27):
Basically, i have it turned onand that's why you see all the
different features.
If I wanted to turn LinkedInlive off, i could.
I don't want to do that.
If I want to turn that followlink off, i don't want to do
that as well.
Here's where I can create thatfollow button.
Copy that code from my website.
It is all accessible from thatsection, right From that section
, when you edit your profile inLinkedIn, saying resources.
(22:50):
I'm showing this on the desktopbecause I do believe that there
are certain things that you canonly do on the desktop and not
on the mobile app.
So I recommend, when you doimportant profile edits to your
LinkedIn profile, you do it onthe desktop and not on the
mobile app.
