Dos especies se disputan el título de canguro más grande: Procoptodon goliah y Sthenurus stirlingi. El canguro Procoptodon goliah, que vivió durante el Pleistoceno, alcanzaba los 2,7 metros de altura y pesaba entre 200 y 240 kilos. Tenía en las manos dos dedos muy largos equipados con grandes garras, probablemente para agarrar las ramas y acercarlas a la boca. Vivía en regiones semiáridas del sur y el este de Australia, y también se han encontrado huellas fósiles en la isla Canguro, frente a las costas de Australia Meridional. Sthenurus stirlingi alcanzaba una longitud total de 3,5 metros y un peso de 240 kilos. Tenía la cola más corta y gruesa que los canguros actuales, el cuello corto y los brazos largos.
