En el norte de Groenlandia, en la península de Nansen, se encuentra el yacimiento de Sirius Passet. Descubierto en 1984, desde entonces se han recogido más de diez mil fósiles del Cámbrico medio, hace unos 520 millones de años. En aquella época, el lugar se encontraba en la costa de un continente llamado Laurentia, formado por Groenlandia y Norteamérica, en latitudes tropicales al sur del Ecuador. La fauna de Sirius Passet está formada por artrópodos, esponjas, moluscos, gusanos y otros animales que no se pueden asignar con facilidad a los grupos actuales. Entre estos últimos destaca Halkieria. Aunque se han encontrado fósiles de Halkieria, y de otras especies emparentadas, que forman el grupo de los halkiéridos, por todo el mundo, en 1989 se descubrió en Sirius Passet el único espécimen completo de este animal.
