Вечером 23 июня основатель ЧВК Вагнера Евгений Пригожин обвинил российских военных в нанесении удара по лагерю наемников и фактически объявил, что собирается осуществить военный переворот в России.
К утру 24 июня ЧВК Вагнера захватила Ростов-на-Дону. Позднее появилась информация, что ЧВК заняла некоторые военные объекты в Воронеже. В Москве, а также в Московской и Воронежской областях введен режим контртеррористической операции.
Источники «Медузы» рассказывают, что высшее руководство страны не ожидало попытки вооруженного восстания и всерьез опасается, что у границ Москвы могут начаться бои с наемниками ЧВК Вагнера.
Владимир Путин назвал мятеж Евгения Пригожина «предательством» и «изменой», а также «ударом по России». Пригожин ответил, что «по поводу предательства Родины президент глубоко ошибся».
Генпрокуратура РФ завела против Пригожина уголовное дело по статье 279 УК РФ (вооруженный мятеж) — она предусматривает лишение свободы на срок от 12 до 20 лет.
