3 июля российские власти РФ официально признали Исламский Эмират Афганистан. Посол России в Кабуле Дмитрий Жирнов заявил, что это решение «демонстрирует искреннее стремление России к налаживанию полноценного партнерства с Афганистаном».
Как отмечает агентство Reuters, Россия стала первой в мире страной, которая официально признала власть «Талибана», после того как движение взяло под контроль большую часть страны в 2021 году.
Движение «Талибан» было признано террористической организацией в России в 2003 году. После прихода талибов к власти в Афганистане в 2021 году Россия начала активно с ними сотрудничать. В апреле 2025 года «Талибан» исключили из списка террористических организаций по решению Верховного суда.
