E ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati SportsStation. Hey, what's up. Good
afternoon on my legger. This isESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening
today. I hope you're having justthe greatest Wednesday afternoon ever. In about

(00:23):
forty minutes, we're gonna be joinedby Scott Sanderfield, the football coach at
the University of Cincinnati, as yousee gets set for the spring game on
Saturday. It's obviously a very busyweek at u SEE with Jason and Travis
Kelsey coming to town for their podcastif you haven't seen, because the weather
is if it's Ify tonight, it'sIfy tomorrow, it may be cold and

(00:46):
rainy and gnarly and ugly, andit's basically kind of part for the course
for an early April night, andso they're moving it inside at fifth Third
Arena, and so it's gonna bea busy week at you see, and
everything sort of culminates with the springgame on Saturday. So u see's football
coach joins us in just about fortyminutes, and obviously we are looking forward

(01:07):
to that. We had it officialtoday, Arkansas makes it known officially that
John Calipari is the coach, andso we are monitoring a couple of different
situations. Number One, when willJohn Calipari's website his twitter feed? I
guess his website too, if coachcal dot com is still a thing,
When will his Twitter feed officially changethe biographical information, the picture and the

(01:34):
actual user name itself, reflecting thathe's no longer the coach at UK but
now the head coach at Arkansas.Because to me, it's not official until
it becomes Twitter slash ex official. So we'll be paying attention to that.
Also, Scott Drew watch is on. The expectation is that those two sides
either have met or will be meetingvery soon to discuss Scott Drew possibly going

(01:57):
from Baylor to the University of Kentucky. And we're having a lot of fun
with that online and we'll have somefun with that on the show throughout the
course of the afternoon. Some Bengalsstuff to get to a little bit later
on. And I think there isa really interesting discussion to be had,
and that is being had in baseballright now about the number of pitching injuries.

(02:22):
And I'm not really talking about theReds, although obviously we're all really
concerned about tj Antone, but therehave been a bunch of injuries, and
the Players Association is making the Idon't want to say accusation, but they
are claiming that the shorter pitch clockand the pitch clock in and of itself,

(02:43):
those are things that are contributing tothe rash of injuries we've seen among
big league starting pitchers. And Idon't know. My guess is that's not
the biggest factor here, but I'mcertainly not closed minded enough to ignore that
as a factor. And so,because I think this is such an interesting
discussion and I like having interesting discussions, We're gonna get one of the experts

(03:06):
from Orthosincy with us at four thirtythree. The Reds lose last night.
It was not Frankie Montas's night. It was Christian Yelich's night. He's off
to a good start. For aguy who put up MVP caliber numbers a
few years ago and then dipped andthen had a decent year last year,
he is off to a terrific start. Reds lose. Yes, they do
crawl back into the game. Defensively, they weren't all that crisp, But

(03:28):
more than anything, Frankie Montas justwas not as good or as sharp as
he was in his first two starts, and the Brewers were really patient with
him last night. So the Redslose a ball game, evening up the
series. We'll see if they canget back on the winning side tonight,
and we'll see if they played tonight. Given the fact that as it was
a little bit last night and istomorrow, the weather is kind of dicey.

(03:51):
I thought the big news yesterday asit relates to the Reds came before
the game, where David Bell offeredsome injury updates. TJ. Friedel is
going to go through an MRI onFriday to sort of see where things are
with his wrist. Hopefully he isable to come back sooner rather than later.
Be great to have him back.Matt McClain also feels great, and

(04:15):
he says David Bell says they're hopingto have him back in August. Now,
a couple of things about that one. August has thirty one days in
it, and there's a major differencebetween coming back on August first and August
thirty first. We did this dancelast year with Hunter Green and Nicolodola,
right, remember well, they mightcome back by August. Okay, well,
August first, August second, August, twelfth, August nineteenth, August

(04:39):
twenty fourth, August thirty, August. That's a big chunk of time.
So there's that also, hope. There's lots of things in life. I
hope for that I'm not necessarily expecting. So there's a difference between hoping for
something and thinking something will happen andexpecting it to happen. The verbiage isn't

(05:00):
the expectation is that Matt McClain isgonna come back by August. It's they
hope that he does. I certainlyhope that he does. This is gonna
sound like an overly pessimistic viewpoint, and I don't mean for it to be.
I just I am operating under theassumption, and I will operate under
the assumption until he plays in aMajor League baseball game in twenty twenty four

(05:23):
that Matt McClain's not gonna play thisyear. Now, maybe he does,
and if he does, awesome,Right, awesome. Matt McClain was last
season their best player. And soif they do great, they get Matt
McClain back. That's a death pieceit's a major boost. Awesome if it
happens in August, even more awesomeif it happens in September. Not as

(05:46):
awesome, but still awesome. Awesomefor Matt, awesome for the team.
But if Matt McClain plays baseball forthe Reds this year, whether it's one
game or sixty games, to me, that is gravy. I am operating
under the assumption and I will continueto operate under the assumption that Matt is
just not going to play for theteam this year. It might seem pessimistic,

(06:08):
but you know, I got tobe honest with you. I did
that with Hunter Green and Nicolodolo lastyear. Now, Huntergreen came back and
pitched and sometimes was not so greatand sometimes was pretty damn good. Tonight
he's gonna pitch. Hopefully he's prettydamn good. Nickolodolo never came back,
and I said it at the time. I'm just I'm gonna operate under the
assumption that neither guy is gonna comeback, because I don't know. I've

(06:30):
been disappointed enough in life. Idisappoint myself every single day. I'm not
gonna add to it. But froma planning perspective. I cannot tell you
enough how much I hope we don'tdo what I fear we're going to do
with Matt McClain. So today isApril the tenth, The trade deadline is

(06:53):
three plus months away. My guessis we will want the Reds to be
in by mode, and frankly, they're really not going to be in cell
mode. They don't have enough agingplayers with expiring contracts to really be in
cell mode. I am going tobeg the Reds, and I'm more than

(07:13):
anything, I'm going to beg thoseof us who talk about the Reds,
rite about the Reds, care aboutthe Reds, tweet about the Reds,
post about the Reds on Facebook, whatever. I'm going to beg all of
us to not go down this road, the road where we say something like,

(07:33):
well, you know what good tradedeadline acquisition will be Matt McClain off
the injury list. Please please,no, please please please, Nick Crawl
no please, Bob Castelini, no, please you and I know please,
Like we did that last summer, right, should the resumeke a trade for

(07:57):
a starting pitcher? They're kind ofa had a schedule. Okay, Well
we're not gonna use that this year. But how many times did you hear
it? Well, you know what, the best trade deadline acquisition is going
to be Hunter Green coming back andNickelodolo coming back. And I hate to
say that, I was the guyraising my hand going, uh sure,

(08:18):
sure, that's A. You needthose guys to come back. B you
need them once they come back tostay healthy. See, you need those
guys to be effective. Now,Hunter Green came back and stayed back and
then had an ERA of six oncehe returned, and Nickelodolo never pitched again
for the Reds in twenty twenty three, So that strategy as it related to

(08:39):
making last year's team better didn't reallywork. It's no knock on Hunter Green,
It's no knock on Nickolodolo. It'sjust it's what happened. Please please
tell me. You know, chancesare we're gonna want the Reds to make
upgrades, and the upgrades might bestarting pitching upgrades. The upgrades might be

(09:00):
Bullpen upgrades. By the way Icould say this, none of this is
a reflection of having no faith inthe team. The La Dodgers will probably
be looking for upgrades, and theAtlanta Braves will be looking for upgrades,
and all the contending teams will belooking for upgrades, including some in the
NL Central. When we're having thisconversation, though, please please not this

(09:22):
one. Please. I'm just it'sI'm going to head it off now and
bookmark this and hopefully this is notsomething we hear in late July. Quote.
Now, you know, the besttrade deadline acquisition the Reds can make
is Matt McLean coming off the Angellist. You know how like sometimes we
do this all the time in sports, where folks will say something and repeat

(09:46):
something, and then it's like it'slike they think that the first person who
ever said it. Whenever we're ina like a hall of Fame argument and
I hear someone say, you knowabout a player who's maybe got a borderline
case, someone will go, oh, you know, it's the Hall of
very good. Whenever someone says that, they give you this look like,
but you haven't heard that before, right, and it's like, Okay,

(10:09):
that's the four hundred and twelfth timein my life I've I've heard that,
and that we did it last summer. Well, the best trade deadline acquisition
the Rats can make would be HunterGreen and Nickelodola coming back, and they
will give you that look like, betch you didn't think that one. Huh.
Please, whatever happens this summer, whatever happens with Matt McClain, whatever

(10:35):
may or may not unfold between nowin late July, we can't be talking
about how well the best trade deadlineacquisition is Matt McClain coming off the injured
list. We can't. We can'trely on that even if he does come
off the injured list, or we'regonna account for the possibility that maybe he's

(10:56):
I don't know, not quite whathe was last year, because he's coming
off an injury and doesn't have thebenefit of spring training to ramp up like
he might before Opening Day. Iknow this sounds pessimistic, and it's not.
It's just, first of all,I just I am assuming he's not
going to play this year, andwe're going to get a lot of updates,

(11:18):
and maybe some of the updates aregoing to be kind of positive.
It'll be you know, the oh, you know, he's uh, he's
resumed baseball activities cool, and he'sfeeling really good and the doctors are really
encouraged. All right, and he'she's starting to ramp up his program.
Okay, and uh, well, you know now he's on a rehab assignment.

(11:39):
When he plays for the Reds intwenty twenty four, that's when I
will believe that he's playing for theReds in twenty twenty four. And I
hope to God that it happens. But when it does happen, it should
be a bonus. It should be, as we say in the radio business,
added value. It should be somethingthat happens above and beyond anything else
that may occur with this ross. This cannot be a theme of the season.

(12:03):
If the Reds are legitimately serious abouttrying to win this year, which
they should be, even in aseason where players are trying to develop,
we can't do the whole thing wherethe best acquisitions are hurt guys. Number
one, that's a strategy of hope. Number two. I just don't feel
like that works all that often.Last year would be a primary example of

(12:28):
it not working. You are welcometo chime in tell me that I'm wrong.
Whatever. Five point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
Matt McClain might come back and hitfour hundred for the Reds this year.
That cannot be something you count on, and the hope for that to
happen cannot be why you don't makea move at the deadline at Malegger on

You're looking for place to just youknow, post up with your buddies,
if you're looking for a if you'relooking for a place to pretty much do

(14:05):
anything. Long nex sports Girl, especially as the weather gets warmer and not
rainy. You got the outdoor patio, you got three locations. It's a
great place to post up. LongNext sports Girl, as they say,
as we say, stay late, come often. Scott Sanderfield in just about
twenty minutes. No, no,no news on Scott Drew yet. Who

(14:28):
Kentucky may or may not be tryingto make their next basketball coach. We've
been having fun with this photo thatthe Baylor head coach tweeted out earlier today
from a Waco lunch spot that hedidn't name. I've seen, I've seen
some folks suggest God, Scott Drew. Yeah, but boring? Okay,

(14:50):
Like is he boring? Sure?Is he? Does he have Danny Hurley's
personality? No, no, nohe doesn't. Does he have his charisma?
Does he have Nate Oaates charisma? No? No? You know who
else is boring? Luke Fickle,Let's be honest. He followed a guy

(15:13):
who's like, you know, thefirst day Tommy Tumberville was on the job.
It was like a PEP rally. It was felt like a political rally,
perhaps portending his current career. Andthen the new coach comes over and
not much of a personality. Let'sbe honest, boring, and today there
should be a statue of him outideNippert Stadium. Who else is boring?
Mark Fuse boring? Anybody have anyissue with the job that dude's done at

(15:37):
Gonzaga. He's kind of boring. You know who's not boring? John Caliperi.
And what's kind of interesting to meis I'll find folks who think Scott
Drew's boring. Now look great rebuildjob at Baylor, won a national title.
Some early exits in the NCAA Tournamentthe last few years, including three
years ago as a top seeded teamto a North Carolina team that, frankly,

(16:00):
relative to its talent, was alittle underseated, but nonetheless Okay,
some early NCAA tournament exits. Butyou know what, to a degree,
if I'm a Kentucky fan, I'mmore interested in substance than sizzle. Like
I kind of felt like the lastfew years, I love John Caliperry.
I got a lot of sizzle.I got the Twitter feed, and I

(16:21):
got the podcast, and I gotall that we're built for March. And
what about the substance. We're notwinning the SEC tournament, We're not even
really competing in it. We're notadvancing in the NCAA tournament. We're getting
blown out repeatedly in the Champions Classic. We're not the factor nationally we have
been. I'm more interested now.Early in Cal's run the first seven years,

(16:44):
I got the sizzle, and Igot the substance. Awesome. The
sizzle is great. It's got tocome with some substance. I felt like
the last few years I got theJohn Caliperry sizzle. I didn't get a
lot of substance with Scott Drew aboring He might look like a TV preacher
or a dude who's going to sellyou a timeshare or a guy who's going

(17:06):
to sell you a bad used car. I don't know. I don't know.
He sort of looks like a dudewho works like at a mal Kios
selling home security systems. I can'tthink of one interesting thing that guy has
said. One interesting thing. Uh. They won the national title in twenty
twenty one. I remember the game. I remember them beating Gonzaga. I
remember the teams. The teams,by the way, not boring, Like

(17:26):
I'll take a boring coach if Iget teams that aren't boring. Luke Fickle
was boring? Were his teams?I've watched Baylor, watched him more closely
this year. Those teams aren't boring. They've played hard, they've played with
an edge. There was a timewhere they had like the most size of
anybody in college basketball. You don'twant to mess with those dudes. So

(17:47):
is the coach boring? Yeah?Probably? Are his teams not the ones
that I've watched. Is the coachboring? Sure? The last guy Wasn't
you tell me what you would ratherhave? Like, the guy who's not
boring is awesome if they's substance towhat he does With John Caliperry, where
was the substance the last five orsix years. I mean, I got

(18:11):
all the ancillary. He's writing books, and he's his radio shows Must listen,
and the Twitter's fun, and he'sgoing on every conceivable radio show.
And I mean he was doing thatthe week of the n CNAA tournament.
He was on every show but ours. Maybe we should have asked and talking
about why players come to Kentucky andthey don't come here for nil. Look,

(18:34):
our managers are getting nil cool.He got smoked by Oakland. Uh.
I would have taken less sizzle hadhis team being able to play defense
this year. So like among allthe different you know, Billy Donovan's interesting
because he's Billy Donovan right back toback national titles from the NBA Kentucky Ties.

(18:56):
Not exactly somebody I would say hasan effervescent personality, but perhaps more
so than Scott drew Man. Ijust if I've just done fifteen years of
sizzle in the last five or sixyears of sizzle and no substance, give
me the boring dude who's got alot of substance. I'll have a coach
who's not writing books. I'll havea coach who's not going on the lecture

(19:17):
circuit. I'll have a coach who'snot all that concerned with making sure that
I'm seen during the NBA draft.Give me a coach can coach defense.
Give me a coach who could gethis team to execute latent games, and
if he's boring while doing so,fine, give me boring. The happiest
I've ever been as a UC footballfan. Brian Kelly brought sizzle, right,

(19:41):
sizzle and substance. It's awesome. The guy who did even better,
not a lot of sizzle, justrecruited his ass off, hired great assistance,
had a lot of continuity, tookthe program to a college football playoff.
You might not want Scott Drew. And if you're saying, look recently

(20:02):
in the NCAA Tournament, he hasn'tgotten it done. Okay, that's fair.
It is. It's very fair becausethat's one of the criticisms of coach
cal But with coach cal Man,I got all the other stuff. I'm
moving the meter, I'm on radioshows, I'm on the Today Show,
I'm at the draft cool. Canyour team do anything in the postseason.

(20:22):
I'll take boring. All I careabout is substance. Now, you might
prefer Dan Hurley to Scott Drew.I probably would do. I think he's
the best coach in the country, and I love Nat Oates. Probably prefer
him to Scott Drew. But I'mnot turning my nose up at a guy
who just a few years ago wona national title, who was in charge
of an awesome rebuild and whose teamsaren't boring. I'm not turning my nose

(20:44):
at him just because he's boring boringin Lexington, I think is kind of
refreshing. Twenty nine away from fouro'clock five point three seven four nine,

Uh? That five six? Okay? You sure? I'm pretty sure.
Is the name of this song,Miss new Booty. Yes. Wait,

(21:51):
when you think of your songwriting classics, Miss new Booty has to be very
early in the conversation. I'll betyou the Coke part of our Makers and

at a forecast since this morning, but it's been pretty much NonStop cloud cover

(23:18):
the Razorbacks. Scott Drew reportedly hasbeen made an offer or is going to
be made an offer depending on whoyou listen to, by the University of
Kentucky to take over. Sage Tolentino, who announced his commitment to the University
of Cincinnati on this show, hasentered the transfer portal. Nice kid,
tall kid, a dude who tome just never looked like a big twelve

(23:41):
player. And as the season wenton, I think it became more and
more obvious that whatever the future heldfor Wes Miller's team, it was most
likely not going to include Sage Tolentino. So best of luck to him he
hits the portal. Bearcats now havethree spots to fill from players who have
entered the portal, and the Cyclonesplayed tonight on the Road against Kansas City

Hall of Famers are going to bedoing their podcast at U SEE tomorrow,
and the original plan was for itto be at Knippert Stadium. Because of
weather, they've moved it inside FifthThird Arena. They're expecting I guess twelve
thousand people, which is roughly whatFifth Third holds, and so what that

(24:45):
means for ticketing, what that meansfor getting in and out, I have
not even bothered to look, Iwill be honest with you, but I'm
sure those answers are easy to getif you're resourceful. So just keep that
in mind. And if you're thinking, God, I wanted to go,
but it might rain, it mightbe kind of cold, Travis and Jason
don't really start there part of theevent until nine o'clock. Well, now
it's going to be inside at FifthThird Arena. At Knippert Stadium, though,

(25:08):
will host the Spring game on Saturday, year two of the Scott Saderfield
regime, head coach of the Bearcats, joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty
Men fourteen away from four o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. The UC
Spring Game is on Saturday at KnippertsStadium. It starts at noon. Year
two of the Bearcats as members ofthe Big Twelve and a whole bunch of

(25:33):
new faces. New defensive coordinator.Lonson talked about Scott Sadderfield, head coach
at the University of Cincinnati, iswith us to talk about spring ball and
so much more. Coach, It'sgood to have you. What's going on,
Yeah, I appreciate you having meon. Man, We're extremely busy's
just been going through our spring practice. We have practice number fourteen today.
They give you fifteen practices, SoI'm about to wrap this thing up,

(25:55):
which obviously wraps up on Saturday forthe spring game. It's been a very
good spring. You know a lotof things that we that we put in
to spring. As far as defense. You know, we hired a new
defensive coordinator and coach fight and bringsa wealth of experience from the Big Twelve
being at Iowa State, for thelast the eight season. So really been
fun to watch the defense come togetherthis this spring. But but a lot
of guys have done some great thingsand and it's been fun competition, you

(26:18):
know, all along. Yeah,And I want to get into some of
that. I think fans naturally aregoing to compare where things are right now
to where they were a year ago. And you know, when when you're
new in a place, there's alwaysso many more challenges on top of conducting
practice, learning the personnel, implementingschemes. So give me an idea of
how far ahead you are now comparedto maybe a year ago. I think,

(26:41):
you know, certainly, you know, if you kind of break it
down offensively, we're we're way wayahead. I mean, you know,
we we're sitting here coming back havingplayed in the Big twelve last year,
and we're bringing back our top sevenoffensive lineman, including the five starters.
You're bringing back a thousand yard rushierand Corey Connor. You bringing back you
know, your your top wide receiver, thatt At, you know, right
around eight hundred and fifty yards. So offensively, we're bringing a lot of

(27:03):
guys back that that actually competed ata high level in the Big twelve last
year, I think fifth in thecountry and Russian thirty two. I think
the total offense. So you know, I think that that's obviously way ahead
of where we were last year.Defensively, you know, you are bringing
in, like I said, anew defensive quarter in coach White, and
a new scheme and we and wealso brought in some new players. I
mean we we're gonna have eleven newdefensive backs. I mean that we that

(27:26):
was certainly a weakness in our defenselast year. We needed to upgrade that.
And we've had done that and inthe high school ranks, uh and
and in the portal and I thinkthose guys that really added some good depth
for us in the secondary of thisspring. And you know, so I
think we're we're ahead there, youknow, we look in the secondary,
and then then linebacker wise, Ithink we're you know, sitting here in
great shape. You know, Dingle'sa guy that that comes back. I

(27:48):
thought I had a solid the yearlast year. Obviously a year wiser,
year stronger. And then defensive linewise, you know, you're bringing back
you know, obviously Dante Corleone onthe top defensive lineman in the country,
along with some other guys that startedup front. I mean, so I
think I think we're our ahead ofthe game compared to last year, a
year more in our program. Youknow, our strength staff has done an
outstanding job, you know with thoseguys adding weight and strength, you know,

(28:12):
with that, you know, andalso we're in this era now where
where you do change over your rostersquite a bit. You know, we
brought in seventeen transfers in January. You know, ten high school players graduated
early and came in, so youknow, it was a lot of new
guys, new faces, man,but they really just came right in to
start, went to work, andthat's what you'd like to see. And
so yeah, it's been where we'rewe're ahead compared to where we were last

(28:33):
year. Go inside that process forme. You're implementing a new defense with
a new defensive coordinator and a wholebunch of new players. Well, one
of the things you do is,you know, before you start your spring
practice. You know, we hadI think around seven weeks and so we
were meeting with our guys, youknow, putting in the new scheme in
the January February period, you know, prior to practice and so they get
a little bit of head start therein the classroom. But since we brought

(28:56):
in a lot of guys on defense, you know they're they're going to learn
a new defense regardless, and sohaving the new defense coined to come in
obviously, what you want to doinitially is to keep it simple. You
know, we put our base defensein and I feel like the first maybe
four practices really was just one defense. You know, you're really not even
doing a lot of different things. You're just getting the base in, teaching
them the fundamentals of the defense, where your help's going to be coming from,

(29:19):
where you want to force the ballcarrier, all those type things,
and then you start implementing a littlebit more defense. And that's what we
were able to do. Put youknow, put some pressures in. You
know, you're dropping a you're bringingyou're even blits and you're bringing six.
You know, you're going all out. But so all all the different things
that you want to do throughout springpractice and then really find out what the
guys can do, what they can'tdo, and trying to find them in

(29:40):
positions. That's the other thing. So if you got a new defense or
where are you fitting this defense, and so we've we've been doing that.
You're meeting every other day when you'renot practicing, and so it's a lot
of classroom work. But then youget on the field and putting it in.
So there's a lot, a lotof work that goes into it.
But that will carry on to thesummer as well. You know, once
we finished on Saturday, you know, we'll our guys have one more week

(30:00):
of school, they'll get a fewweeks off, they'll be right back here.
So we'll continue everything that we didthis spring all summer long, for
two months Junior July before we headinto our August camp. You're always emphasizing
physicality. You talked about the strengthand conditioning program which started the day after
last season ended. But I mean, look, you've your your program has
to rise to the level of physicalitythat the Big Twelve brings. There were

(30:22):
times where it felt like you guysdid that last year, but you got
to close that gap. So howmuch have you just emphasized that this offseason?
Yeah? Well, I mean aton. I mean had the whole
offense is the most difficult off seasonour players have been through. They'll they'll
tell you that it was very intense, very competitive, pushing them to the
point where they have to question themselvesif this really worth it, you know.

(30:45):
I mean that's where you want toget them to and then and then
come on and come out on theother side of it. And then they
did that, you know, withthe support of their teammates to get through
it. Leadership was big this offseason, you know, particularly from the
guys that went through that that lastyear. You know, you know,
you think about the last couple ofgames and it was it was not good
at all. We we didn't finishstrong, you know, and and I
think that that just motivated our guysand propelled them into the off season that

(31:07):
to have a great off season, and they did that. We know,
we had a lot of work todo this off season. We're right in
the middle of it. We're puttingin that work. It's a very competitive
Big twelve. We all know thatyou have to elevate your game, you
know, as far as an individual, and you also have to bring in
some some talent and you know, some players that we feel like competing this
level. So so there's a lotof things. That's all the aspects of

(31:29):
it. You know, I thinkcharacter and discipline plays a big part of
it. That's some of the thingswe're working on this off season as well,
you know, and and and it'sjust a different vibe around here now.
I think anybody that's that's come aroundour practices and watched us and hung
out a little bit, they cansense it and fill it, you know.
But that still doesn't guarantee anything inthe fall. So we've got to
continue to push our guys to thelimit as we head throughout this summer and

(31:52):
headed into uh, you know, when we go to higher ground. Obviously
you've got a lot of early enrollees. That's a part of the modern college
football reality, and that's it's agreat chance for them to get to get
ahead. And obviously you're going tohave kids who can't show up on campus
to the summer. But what isit like when you're coaching somebody who was
playing high school football just weeks before? Yeah, I mean, you know

(32:13):
these guys that came in, thehigh school players who brought ten in.
I mean, we have been very, very pleased with these guys. You
will be seeing some of those facesthis fall, and that's one of the
things I think by by graduating early, coming in mid term. You've given
yourself a chance to go through springpractice to be able to see the field
in the fall. And there willbe several of these guys that that will
be able to do that. Imean, Simeon Coleman is a guy that

(32:35):
comes to mind to the linebacker position. He came in and started turning heads
right off the bat. I feellike, you know, Zahirski and Grover,
two tight ends, came in anddid some really nice things in the
tight end room. You know,Saints and Safety. You know, a
couple of corners, a Johnson,I mean, you know, really good
ones. Yeah, I mean,I'm really really pleased with these freshmen that
came in. Now now it isYou're right, it takes a little bit

(32:57):
something, you know, different forthose guys men because they should be in
high school right now, and allof a sudden, they're on a campus
getting up at five thirty in themorning, coming to do workouts and they're
you know, they're they're like, what's going on. These guys did a
great job with that. You canreally see how much improved they've gotten throughout
the fifteen spring practices, and nowthey're going to be that much better once
they head through the summer and headin the fall camp, they'll be ahead
of the other guys that will becoming in this summer, the other eleven

(33:20):
freshmen. So I'm excited for theseguys, excited for this class that we
brought in. A lot of uswho are there on Saturday are going to
be watching Brendan Soursby very very closely. Give us an idea of some of
the things you've seen from him.Yeah, you know, Brandon came in
and he was shooting. Man,it's about too a little over two forty
two forty one. The other dayhe just wiged in. He's right at
two twenty nine, two thirty,so, I mean he's got his body

(33:42):
right, He's lost down some weight. He can run. He's for a
big man, he can still youknow, pick him up and put him
down. He's got a very goodrelease, quickly accurate passer. You know,
they're really going to come down tohim and continue to learn the offense,
know oning where to go with thefootball, how to distribute the football.
You know, he's a great teammate. I think one thing we've seen
throughout the spring practices is how heinteracts with the coaches, how he interacts

(34:06):
with the other players, uh,you know, and I think it's it's
a refreshing, refreshing to have, you know, a quarterback to come in
and be able to pick right upas if he's been here, you know,
his whole career. And and that'sthat's that's something great to see.
And I give credit to the otherguys in the quarterback room. Those guys
have been awesome for him and eachother the way they just pick each other
up. So I think people willrecognize his arm and we'll be able to

(34:29):
say, you can throw the football, but also the way he's been able
to move. You have the SpringBrank, the spring game, and then
obviously that wraps up spring practice andthen the second wave of the portal reopens.
So kind of walk me through thenext few weeks. Yeah, you
know, Saturday, we have ourspring game. Next the following week is
when the portal opens up. It'llbe open for a couple of weeks where
you know, everybody in the countryif they feel like they want to test

(34:52):
the waters, they're able to puttheir name in the portal and see see
you know what what's out there. We'll be meeting with our players all next
week, you know, and justindividually going over to spring practice kind of
where we're seeing them, you know, things they need to work on and
how they need to get better throughoutthe summer, you know, and and
also see where we're at. Youknow, we do have scholarships available.
As we sit here today, youknow, we'll we'll probably looking anywhere from

(35:15):
four to five to six guys tobe at on a football team. A
lot will be depending on what's outthere and available. You hope you don't
have a whole lot of turnover atthis point in the game. You know,
we hope that you know, thisteam we have right now is going
to be you know, ninety eightpercent the team will be playing with in
the fall. You know, Ido recognize that there is opportunity for guys
to get in the portal, butI feel like that, you know,

(35:35):
we do have a strong culture herenow. Guys want to be a part
of this team, want to bea part of the city of Cincinnati,
and to be a Bearcat. SoI think we got a lot going forwards
in that regard. Got the springgame on Saturday, you will have on
campus tomorrow night a pair of guyswho are going to be in the Pro
Football Hall of Fame one day.Take me through the relationship between your program
and Jason and Travis Kelsey. Yeah, I mean to man, where everybody's

(36:00):
so proud of them. There's noquestion about what they've been able to accomplish,
you know, particularly the last fewyears here. I mean, they've
they've gotten so much notoriety, youknow, as the best at that for
their position, you know, thebest center in the NFL and the best
tight end in the NFL. Andfor those guys to be Bearcats and to
call Cincinnati home, it's incredible, you know, for us, and we're

(36:21):
so proud of them. And thenthe fact now that they're they're coming back
here at maybe the height of theircareers. They're as poper now as they've
probably ever been. And for themto come here and do you know,
have their podcast here, one ofthe most popular podcasts in the world,
to do it right here on ourcampus in front of man, We're gonna
have over twelve thousand people coming totheir podcast. I mean, that's insane

(36:42):
to me that even think about, you know, listen to a couple of
guys go up there and talk Imean that that's incredible, which is but
that's how popular they are, andthat's how proud I think everybody in Cincinnati
is of them, and you know, and they've got a lot of you
know, they got a lot ofcloud out there, and so for them
to be able to come here, the spotlight's going to be us, you
know, on Thursday when they're here, and you know, but so yeah,
just I mean, I'm really justextremely proud of them. We get

(37:05):
to hang out with them a littlebit on Thursday and Friday. You know,
we're bringing back a bunch of tonof our football players that's that's played
here in the past. We've gota big golf tournament on Friday. So
we're gonna have a lot of funthis weekend with a alumni weekend for for
all these former Bearcats. Should bea lot of fun and looking forward to
Saturday on top of Tomorrow night.Coach, I always appreciate the time,
man, Thank you so much.Appreciation man, Take care you got it.

(37:28):
Scott Saderfield, head football coach atthe University of Cincinnati. The spring
game at noon on Saturday at NippertStadium, and then you know, the
the offseason calendar is weird because theportal then reopens up and some of the
guys you see on Saturday might bewith other programs by the time the season
comes around, and obviously they couldbe bringing players from other places. I

(37:49):
think as the season went on lastyear and depth becomes an issue, and
as they played, you know, frankly more physical teams. I think of
that Oklahoma State game on the roadtowards the end of the year. They
just got pushed around. West Virginiajust pushed them around. So rising to
the level of that physicality in theBig twelve, on top of just adding
better players and maybe upgrading things alittle bit of quarterback, I'm really interested

(38:12):
to see if this team is morecapable of just matching what Big twelve teams
bring in terms of physicality. Alwaysnice to catch up with Scott Saderfield.
We have open lines five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty and eight six six, seven oh two, three, seven,
seven six a few more Reds issues. There is something that I think is

(38:35):
a little problematic when it comes tothe Reds. We'll get to that,
and we're gonna do a segment forme on Friday. We'll get to that
next four o'clock, ESPN fifteen thirtySports and Christine Less. The official announcement
today from Arkansas John Caliperry is itsnew men's basketball coach, five year deal,
starting salary seven million dollars annually, one and a half million line than

(39:00):
what he was making at Kentucky.NBA buckstar Giannis Ontetokoupo's avoided a serious achilles
injury after last night's fall. ESPN'sAdrian Wrjanowski's reporting his left achilles tendon is
fully intact. His return to playdepends on how quickly his cap string heals.
It's not just down the Bucks playersto make sure they hang on a
second in the East, and Giannis'sabsence, points out ESPN's Hendrick Perkins,

(39:22):
aw, that's a chance for DocRivers to actually shut a lot of people
up. He gets to start tochange the narrator right, because he's gonna
have to coach really dive into hisbag, and I believe he cannot believe
he will. I mean, it'sgoing to be a hard task, but
I think they got enough pieces toget it done and to survive until Gianna's
get back. The NHL's for bearinga contingency plan that could relocate the Arizona

(39:45):
Coyotes to Utah next season. Theleague is skeptical about the team's newest plan
to build an arena in Phoenix, reports ESPNS Emily Kaplan and Greg Rushinski.
Hey, it's a rather than SuperBowl chat. Chris Kenny coming on Thursday.
We've no killer will will be thefirst quarterback drafted, But I'll tell
you who will be second off theboard. When I revealed my MOP two
point zero. It's on sports forlike six am, Eastree right here on

(40:07):
ESPN Radio, ESPN two and ESPNU. This report is Sponsoredbile. Hey,
that's us. Good afternoon, Moegger, ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you so
much for listening. I just retweetedit because Tarn retweeted it. We have
touchdown of John Caliperry in Fayetteville. As I look here he when does he

(40:36):
have to update his Twitter feed hisTwitter slash x feed, which is at
UK coach Caliperry. My guess iswhoever has the login information for his Twitter
feed they can't find, they can'tget a hold of, or they've lost
it. I have no idea andso if because people obsess over coaching changes

(40:57):
and you know, frankly, Ithink if you if you care about Kentucky
basketball, you're probably more interested inwho Kentucky is going to get than you
are who Kentucky just one might saylost, or one might say got separated
from or I don't know, letget away and willingly so. But I'm

(41:17):
looking at the video right now,and there's coach cal getting off the plane
and he's met by the Arkansas mascot, and Arkansas's mascot gives John Calipery the
umbrella? Is his wife? Oh, I gotta get the sound. I
gotta turn the sound off on mylaptop. Here is that is that Ellen
Caliperry? All right? Somebody Ijust wanted to make sure somebody gave her

(41:38):
an umbrella. And it wasn't thesort of thing where we just gave the
coach an umbrella. Very good,All right, Well they've gotten off the
plane and they're at some airport hangar, and there's the mascot and there's some
people cheering for him. And soJohn Caliperry is in Fayetteville. This is
making it quite real. So Iknow who I want Kentucky's head coach to

(42:01):
be. We'll get to that comingup in just about fifteen minutes, Can
I can I quickly make a smallI don't know, it's not a big
announcement. There are certain times, and I mean like in the history of
this show, which is now approachingits seventeenth anniversary in May, there are

(42:23):
certain times, and not that many. Probably in the all the years we've
been doing this, maybe between liketen to twelve times that we've done a
segment that is done primarily for me, where I'm not doing it because I
think it interests a large chunk ofthe audience. I'm doing it solely for

(42:46):
myself. And I gotta be honestwith you, there aren't that many segments
like this that have have come tomind. Like once we had John McEnroe
in the show, and like, there's John McEnroe's up enormous name in American
sports, an iconic name in tennis, but like, I'll admit he was
here played in some indoor event atthe Centa Center. That interview was done

(43:09):
for me, Like I loved himgrowing up, so that one was kind
of done for me. But Igot a lot of good feedback on it.
We once had back in like nineor twenty ten, just because I
loved his show at the time, which is still on. The Dude from
Pawn Stars on our show because Ijust thought it'd be cool to have him

(43:30):
on. We once had Andrew Ciciliana, who just got bounce from the NFL
network, which is stupid, andlike, these are guests that I think
there's there's some appeal there, Butlike, we had Andrew Ciciliana on because
I'm watching the NFL Red Zone Channelone day and I'm just like in awe
of how good he is, andI think that would be the coolest I
think that would be the coolest jobin broadcasting to be the host of the

(43:52):
NFL Red Zone Channel and stand therefor seven hours just narrating what's going on
in these games, and it hasto be so much fun but also so
exhausting. And so I'm watching, excuse me Andrew Ciciliano one day, and
I thought it just be kind ofcool to talk with him about what it's
like to host a red Zone channel. And maybe nobody else finds that interesting,

(44:14):
but I do. So we gothim on the air and he was
terrific, And that is my dreamjob. Not to do it every week,
but I would want to do thatone time, Like if there was
such a thing as broadcasters Fantasy Camp, I would want it to be where
I got a chance to host theNFL Red Zone channel for one Sunday,
that would be awesome. But we'redoing something like this on Friday. I'm

(44:36):
just going to tell you now.And there's only one other occasion in the
history of this show where I havegenuinely been nervous about doing the interview that
we had booked. The second instanceis going to be on Friday. So
last week, and if you followme on social media, you might have
seen this. I was off lastFriday and I got an e email from

(45:01):
a representative from the Big Three, which is the professional three on three basketball
league. They have an event thissummer at the Heritage Bank Center downtown three
on three, and back in twentyseventeen they had one at rapp Ana and
ice Cube is the tarn Correct meif I'm wrong. Is he the founder

(45:24):
of the league or just like thepresident, He's the founder founder ice Cube.
And so we had a chance tohave ice Cube on the show,
which I was thirteen years old.America's Most Wanted the cassette came out.
It had a parental advisory sticker,so you couldn't go buy it, so
you had to get somebody who hadaccess to that sort of stuff to get

(45:44):
it. So that's pretty cool iceCube, right, crossover star but at
a billion movies that was that waspretty damn cool. So we did that
interview in twenty seventeen. It wasfun having them on. Didn't think twice
about it. So that was thelast time I guess the Big Three was
in the general area. They wereat Reparina last Friday. At ten sixteen
in the morning, I get anemail from a woman by the name of

(46:07):
Hannah with Big Three Basketball and itsays, Hi Mo reaching out to see
if you are interested in an interviewwith ice Cube, Charles Oakley and or
Jordan Crawford to discuss the Big threezeupcoming games in Cincinnati at Heritage Bank Arena

(46:28):
on Sunday, July the twenty eighth. The season schedule on CBS and the
league's reported offered to Caitlin Clark. All are available on April eleventh or April
the twelfth. Now I got thatemail and I'm like, all right,
First of all, having ice Cubeon the show would be would be pretty
cool. Having Jordan Crawford on theshow would be pretty cool. And obviously,

(46:51):
if you're a Xavier fan, yeah, sure, let's do it.
But this is me, Okay,this is I don't I'm a huge Knicks
fan, and I don't really spendthat much time talking about the Knicks because
I know nobody cares. And Ilove being a Knicks fan because I feel
like if you do this job,and like, I'm a big Reds fan,

(47:12):
I'm a big Bengals fan. I'ma big uc football and basketball fan.
I'm a big Dayton fan. Butlike, it's kind of nice to
have a team that I don't haveto have a take on. I could
say whatever I want about him onsocial media and the media relations guy's not
going to get mad, and soit's just it's a great outlet. I
watched the games solely through the lensof wanting the team to do well.

(47:36):
In the nineties, you know, when I was in high school, Charles
Oakley was like the guy. Right. If you were to ask anybody who
was a Knicks fan during that time, most will tell you he was their
favorite player. And like, Ilove Patrick Ewing, Love Patrick Ewing,
I love all those guys, butlike Charles Oakley was the face, the

(47:57):
personality, the body, the brawnof those teams, and I think has
also carved out enough of a personalityas just an overall doesn't give a blank
badass that he's an interesting guy totalk to. He's an interesting guy to
sort of follow, and for me, would he just be awesome to have
on the show. So I wrotethis woman back and basically begged her to

(48:21):
have Charles Oakley on, and Isaid, look, ice Cube would be
fine, and Jordan Crawford would befine. We could talk about the time
he walked through UC's huddle during theCrosstown shootout and like intimidated half the team.
But let's be honest, having CharlesOakley on the show, I have
been very lucky since we started doingthis show that pretty much anybody I've ever

(48:42):
wanted to talk to we've had onlike people that I grew up loving,
folks that I hold in high esteempersonally, with the exception of Sazar Geronimo,
We've had every member of the Gradeeight on this show. I've had
Joey Vada, We've had every Bengalplayer I would ever care to have on
and I'm not huge in having athletesjust for the sake of having athletes.

(49:02):
But like anybody I've ever really wantedto talk to, with four exceptions,
one of them is Charles Oakley. So Friday at four o'clock I got the
email today after saying, look,I'd love to talk to Charles. I'll
admit to you that I idolized Charles. I told the woman I would name
my second daughter after her if weever had one, which were not,

(49:24):
and she've had a great sense ofhumor. So today she wrote me back
and informed me that at four o'clockon Friday, the most badass basketball player
in the history of the sport,Charles Oakley, will be on this show.
I have no real idea what I'mgoing to ask him. I have
no real idea if he's We hadJohn Tortorella on with us, the former

(49:49):
head coach of the Blue Jackets, who was awesome with us, but he
could be kind of prickly with themedia, and so we got him on
because the Blue Jackets had won likefifteen straight games, and we get him
on the air, and then I'mlike, you know what, I've watched
this guy blow up at people I'mterrified. I was terrified to interview him.
Also, I like hockey. I'mnot as well versed in that sport
as I maybe should be to interviewan NHL head coach. I have never

(50:12):
worked harder to study and prepare foran interview than the John Tortorella interview.
And it ended up being pretty good, and folks who listened to it said
they liked it, and he wasvery very kind and gracious, and I'm
a fan of his to this daynow that he's the coach of the Philadelphia
Flyers. I was scared, though, I will be very honest with you.
The idea of interviewing Charles Oakley andnot doing it correctly or asking or

(50:37):
saying the wrong thing, I haveno idea what might happen. So Friday
at four o'clock, we are goingto do something that is quite frankly mainly
for me. And we do thisso infrequently that I think I'm within I'm
within reason to ask for you toindulge me, and we'll talk about the
Big Three and them offering Caitlin Clarka spot, and whatever the hell else

(51:00):
I can come up with. ButI'll be just painfully transparent with you.
I'm we're doing We're doing Charles Oakleyon Friday because I was offered Charles Oakley
and so we're not saying no tothat. Tara, are you excited for
Charles Oakley on Friday? I amjust be glad it's not in person.
Then you might be a little bitmore intimidated it was in person, we

(51:23):
might have to turn off the moment, we might have to record the interview
in advance, and like, well, I'm gonna ask if he's coming,
is he actually gonna be in Cincinnatifor the Big Three? Is he a
coach or something? Yeah? Ithink he was the coach last year.
So I'm gonna ask Charles Oakley ifthe night is the twenty eighth is like
a Sunday. If I'm not mistaken, will Charles Oakley want to go hang

(51:45):
out somewhere in Cincinnati on Saturday evening? Cause you know he's not just flying
into town sitting in his hotel room. He was coach of the Killer Threes,
Killer Threes. You know, whereverCharles Oakley is in Cincinnati on Saturday
is where everybody else wants to be. I want to be there for that,

(52:06):
whatever the activity is you know,I'm sure he'll go to the Jeff
Ruby's expensive steakhouse. I'll show upthere and pay more money for a meal
than I ever have in my life. Whatever. I want to see,
If Charles Oakley will let me bea part of his entourage when they come
to Cincinnati. I think he would, think so, think he'd let us.
I think he would, all right, So that's what I want to

(52:28):
know, oak When you come totown, can we, you know,
hang out or something? So Friday, I'm off Tomorrow, Friday, four
o'clock, Charles Oakley is going tobe on this show. And then and
then the list of people that Iwould ever have wanted to have on this
show will be down to three,Taren, Do you know who they are?
My three dream guests? No?All right? You ready for him?

(52:52):
Yes? All right? Number oneis Mike Brown now, and I
have no interest and talking about theBengals with him. Mike Brown has had
a front row seat for the evolutionof the NFL from what it was to
what it is now, and Ithink that is remarkably fascinating. I think

(53:14):
talking say what you want about him, and we've said a lot. I
think his life has been so insanelyinteresting, and he has seen and experienced
so much that to sit there withhim and talk about his experience, he
would never do it. He doesn'tdo interviews, and why on earth would
he do one with me? Ikid, you not like would be absolute

(53:35):
top of list because I think hisjust life, you know, I mean,
just watching the NFL go through allthe changes, what it was like
growing up, Paul Brown's son, being there, having a front row seat
for the formation of a franchise,I think would just be fascinating to hear.
And maybe somebody has done that andI haven't seen it. I think
that would be interesting. Number twoTarren, are you ready? Number two?

(53:59):
Mike Breath One two, Number twoMarv Albert. Marv Albert has called
play by play for every important basketballplayer for sixty years. He's obviously a
couple of years ago retired every importantbasketball player. There is no one on
earth more qualified to talk about stupidthings like who the goat is? But

(54:24):
also just again front row seat forthe evolution of a league. He called
play by play for games in whichevery important player dating back to the sixties
played in And as a basketball fan, how on earth would you not want
to hear his perspective on that,So that would be number two. Number

(54:44):
three. Pat Riley, perhaps thesingle most important sports executive slash coach in
professional sports for the last fifty years, was a player played in a a
very important college basketball game when hewas at UK against Texas Western and Don

(55:05):
Haskins, and and then obviously coachingthe Lakers and being such a big part
of the introduction of the league tovery much a mainstream audience, and then
you know, being involved in theleague through the Jordan era, being involved
in the league and running the heatwhile Lebron was there, like his life
in sports is maybe the most fascinating. Those are my big three. Nobody,

(55:30):
I mean, like other people youget on to be kind of cool,
you know, like be neat ifwe had a chance to talk to
Bob Costas or someone like that. But I've heard his take on like everything
out there. Those are my bigthree. After Charles Oakley, Friday at
four o'clock we get Charles Oakley onthis show. I may retire after Friday.
I may just say, all right, the good run, We'll go

(55:52):
Phil Venning Machines or something. SoFriday at four o'clock you might think it's
the dumbest interview we've ever done.I'm at least giving you a heads up,
but we're doing that one for me. It's twenty one minutes after four
o'clock. Somebody on Twitter here suggestedTarren that we we take like guest suggestions

(56:13):
now, but then then we'd reallybe putting you to work. Like I'm
not telling you to go get MarvAlbert on the show and probably doesn't do
interviews, but like the dude's calledplay by play for you. Name the
player that played in the NBA fromlike the mid sixties to twenty twenty one,
twenty twenty two. He didn't justsee him play, he called their
games. You kidding me? Like, sitting down talking hoops for an hour

(56:36):
with that guy wouldn't be like themost fascinating thing of all time. Yeah,
the last thing I've seen when Igoogle Marv Albert. He spoke to
someone at the New York Post intwenty twenty three. Yeah, like just
again, like called every every playerwho has mattered in that league's history going
back to the mid sixties. Insome way, shape or form. He

(57:00):
described what they did. Like Idon't know how you wouldn't want to listen
to him talk about such things.Pat be the toughest one, probably,
but like I just again, likean inch, I don't want to talk
about like, well, what areyou going to do this all season with
a heat? Like just an extraordinarilyimportant figure in a league that rose to
prominence while he was the head coachof the LA Lakers, and then his

(57:22):
time with New York, his timewith Miami's time as an executive, his
time as a coach, some ofhis mistakes, some of his experiences just
I think is not somebody I unnecessarilylike, but I just think has had
a really interesting life and a hugeimpact on sports, not just basketball but
sports. And I think like radiointerviews, unfortunately they're eight minutes and they're

(57:44):
fine, but like that's the sortof dude you get in studio and it's
like, all right, we're we'regoing to go long for him here,
and we're not going to do thatwith Charles Oakley, I could promise,
but I would do that with MikeBrown, Marv Albert or Pat Riley.
I won't know if we could dohis own with oak Well, we're gonna
get him on the phone tomorrow onFriday. I know that, man,
Yeah, I bet I think it'dbe cooler for a zoom. I think

(58:05):
a zoom would be neat. Imean I could such an up here with
Hannah and she can make that.I don't know make that happen. But
uh, I want to hang outon Saturday night, July twenty seventh,
somewhere in Cincinnati with Charles Oakley.I don't care where it is, I
don't care what we're doing. Iwill borrow money from people to be able
to hang out with him. Ibet you a casino trip is involved.

(58:29):
Right of course, Charles Oakley isprobably going down to the casino downtown.
Okay, I'm in. I don'teven need to gamble, like I just
want just want to I just wantto be in the crew. Well we
say, shoots your shot. Ijust want to be like Charles, If
you're gonna go play crap somewhere, can I just be in that like crew?
Can I just be like a hangeron for one night? Charles Oakley?

(58:51):
So anyway, I appreciate you indulgingme as I ask for indulgence on
Friday, but we're we're having Charles. If I got a general rule,
if they say you have like oneof your favorite all time athletes on the
show, the answer is going tobe yes, and usually those are Cincinnati
athletes. Like every Bearcat player thatI've ever wanted to talk to, We've
been lucky enough to have on everybangle that I've ever wanted to talk to.

(59:15):
We've been very lucky to have onevery rat that I've ever wanted to
talk to. I've been very luckyto have on. We're getting Charles Oakley
on and we'll see how it goes. That's Friday at four oh five.
We are way late, twenty fourafter four ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati's sanely
late. So this is going tobe a very quick segment we have.

(59:37):
We're gonna get some answers as towhether the pitch clock is causing all these
injuries that pitchers are suffering in abit and Brendanman and Jones, I think
on Baseball Today coming up in justa bit. So here's a very quick
segment. Are you ready. Ithink there's some concern about Alexis DS And
when I say concern, I don'tI don't know that it's my concern.

(01:00:00):
Although I'm concerned, I think there'sconcern about Alexis DS who the other night.
I don't know why the Milwaukee Brewerswould swing at any of those pitches
he's through. Now, there havebeen some some outings this year where he's
looked okay. I think there's concernedabout Alexis ds just not telling you that

(01:00:25):
he's hurt, not telling you that, uh, he can't figure it out
and be an All Star this yearagain. But I don't know. Man,
what I watched, what I've watchedthis year from him, I don't
look like to do it. Iwas watching a year ago. There you
go, there's there's an incredible sportstalk radio segment. Now let's find out

(01:00:49):
about injuries, sports headlines as well, try to figure out if they're even
gonna play tonight. It's twenty eightfrom five ESPN fifteen thirty Siously chevro Leh
home of lifetime powertrain prot and guaranteedcredit approval from their family to yours for
life kelseyshev dot Com rents are supposedto play the Brewers tonight. Do we
believe that that's actually gonna happen?I might start tweeting local meteorologists to see

(01:01:15):
if they think the game is goingto happen tonight. If it does,
Hunter Green is supposed to pitch againstWade Miley six forty this evening on a
seven hundred WLW. John Caliperry isin Fayetteville because he's going to be the
head coach at Arkansas. Sage Tolentinoof UC is about to no longer be
Sage Tolentino of UC because he's enteringthe transfer portal. By the way via

(01:01:36):
New Heights podcast, Tomorrow has beenmoved inside to a Knippert Stadium, and
the Cyclones play inside tonight against KansasCity on the road. Brandman and Jones
on Baseball in just a few minutes. We do this every single Wednesday,
we talk injuries with one of theexperts from Ortho Sinsey Orthopedics and sports Medicine.
What we love about Orthos Cincy isthey have specialists and locations across the

(01:01:58):
Tri State. They offer walking orthopedicurgent care at five Tri state locations,
and they have extended evening and weekendhours in Edgewood and Anderson. Learn more
at orthosinc dot com. That's Orthosc I n c Y dot com.
Doctor Brandon Chorus from Orthosinci is withus so much to talk about. I

(01:02:19):
hate that we're having another conversation abouttj Antone, but unfortunately, here we
are. He's gonna have a thirdelbow procedure. Now it's not technically,
I guess gonna be Tommy John surgery, but close He's already had two Tommy
John surgeries. So given his history, given what we're dealing with, what's
the prognosis, Hey, it's gonnabe tough, really really long recovery.

(01:02:47):
Looking this up, you look uphow many people have returned to Major League
Baseball for three Tommi John surgeries andthe list is quite small. So,
you know, if that is it'ssomething he's able to do, it's going
to be a while. I meanwe're looking at, you know, probably
a couple of seasons worth the recovery. The average recovery you're looking at fourteen
to eighteen months for his first, you know, first surgery, second surgery,

(01:03:12):
and so I think it's beyond thatby the time he's able to get
back. Are there specific complications thatcome with the third procedure? Well,
the way you got to look atthis, anytime you go in for surgery,
especially revision surgery. It's not you'restarting over. It's not like you
know, you tore the rope onyour swing set and it's gotten by a
new one. You're dealing with thatsame rope each time you go in there,

(01:03:32):
so you know the bone that you'vealready drilled multiple holes into is going
to be the same, and youknow your real estate becomes more limited.
You're dealing with scar tissue. You'redealing with, you know, your owner
nerve, which is right in thatarea, So you know each time you
go in, things do get alittle more complex, and the tissue quality

(01:03:53):
isn't that you're starting with isn't alwaysas good either. Obviously, ever,
every person is different, every surgeryis different. But if the Tommy John
surgery specifically is so effective, whyare we hearing about athletes who need it
multiple times. It's pitching, It'spitching hard, it's pitching frequently. You

(01:04:18):
talk to a lot of people inthe shoulder elbow world and baseball specifically,
and they will say that pitching iscumulative and that you have a certain number
of pitches in that arm, andyou know, once you had that number,
you really increased the risk of thingsgoing on and I think this,
you know, the pandemic that youtalk about, epidemic, pandemic that Justin

(01:04:41):
Ferlander mentioned. I think it goesback to high school baseball. And you
know, for any dad's listening tothis, I mean, it's just it's
pitching, it's showcases. And wetalk about Major League Baseball. The number
one increase and Tommy John surgery isan individual's between the ages of fifteen to
nineteen. And I think kids arepitching too much. They're pitching harder,

(01:05:03):
We're getting more you know, datadriven pitching where you know, you're watching
videos of yourself and so you're workingon spin rates and you're maximizing the amount
of velocity you're getting. And Iif it's too much in my opinion.
So you kind of took it whereI was going to go next. Obviously,

(01:05:24):
it's it's really the big topic inMajor League Baseball right now, where
there's been this run of pitcher injuries. The Players Association is, you know,
kind of making the point. Look, we have a pitch clock.
We have a quicker pitch clock. Now in twenty twenty four, pitchers are
being asked to work quicker, andthere's a correlation there Baseball is saying,
actually, it's a little bit morecoincidental, and we have a whole generation

(01:05:45):
of pitchers that have come up withthe pitch clock, so let's start with
that. Are pictures at the highestlevels being asked to work too quickly.
You know this is double side becauseas a fan, you know, I
enjoy not watching a three and ahalf hour baseball game, you know,
to get to the end of it. And I think the pitch clock has

(01:06:06):
been good for fans. Couldn't increasefatigue? I think it could increase the
fatigue. Is it the direct causeof these increase injuries? You're not going
to get anything definitive right now,but I mean I would say no.
I think this goes back to throwing. I mean, and you look at
and this is interesting from you froma physics standpoint. The amount of force

(01:06:30):
it takes to tear your honor collateralligament is less than the amount of force
that it takes to throw an eightyeighty five mile an hour fastball. So
already, right off the bat,the force of throwing a ball is greater
than the force of that ligament isable to withstand, especially in younger individuals.

(01:06:54):
So you have these younger and youngerpeople throw in eighty ninety one hundred
miles an hour, A lot ofthese situations at the ticking time bomb,
and especially these individuals who have hadit once already. Yeah, I think
there's a life expectancy on that secondrepair as well. And I think as
we continue to get more specialized andwe continue to focus on spin rates and

(01:07:17):
velocity, which is actually we talkedabout justin Berland or something that he pointed
out, I think that's where thefocus is. I think that, you
know, these foreign substances, thesepitch clocks are kind of secondary to the
big issue that you've got a generationof people who have been throwing a lot
and probably thrown too much for thelast ten, fifteen, twenty years.

(01:07:38):
And this is I guess this ismore of a statement about just baseball culture
than it is anything medically. Idon't see that changing anytime soon. It
may change over the course of time. I don't think we're going to suddenly
see a de emphasis on velocity, either at the highest level or at the
amateur level. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am now,

(01:07:58):
and I don't think too early ofthe contracts that these guys are signing,
you know, for a lot offor the majority of people, you
take that risk. And if you'rea parent, you know, and you
think your kids got a shot, which you know most parents do, You're
gonna put him in showcases and you'regonna have him pitch as much as possible.
But you know, it has shownthe pitch counts in the younger populations
do work. So I would emphasizethat. And you know, maybe having

(01:08:23):
your kid play second base for alittle bit isn't gonna be a bad thing.
Yeah, no, I uh,I would agree with that. Let's
uh, let's talk about a secondbaseman, Matt McLean and so, uh
he's obviously dealing with the labor issue, the cartilage tear in his shoulder,
had surgery. Uh, he hasn'tbeen able to stay healthy. David Bell
did say yesterday we're hopeful that hecan come back in August. A lot

(01:08:45):
of us kind of rolled our eyes. Does that prognosis seem reasonable? Should
I hold out hope that I'm gonnasee Matt McLean play this year? I
think you hold out hope, Andfor one reason in that it's his left
shoulder that he had operated on ifI read that correctly, and so he
plays second base and he throws righthanded. He hits right handed. Now

(01:09:10):
you know, throwing isn't going tobe as much of an issue. I
mean that he'ld come back from soonerbecause it's your non throwing arm. It's
going to be more of the hitting, which is a right handed batter,
and it's going to be more ofyour lead or pull through arm. But
I don't think that's out of thequestion to see him sometime this season as
long as his rehab goes well, especially given the extremity that it is now.

(01:09:30):
If he was a pitcher, ifit was a dominant extremity, you
know, you can forget about theseason in my opinion. But non dominant
extremity, non throwing extremity, Ithink they're your chance. I hope you're
right. Interesting conversation. I doappreciate it as always, doctor, Thank
you so much. All right, thank you, you got it. Awesome
stuff, Doctor Brandon Korz. Ithink the topic is interesting. And look,

(01:09:55):
the Players Association may have a pointabout the pitch clock. Maybe I
think it's a fan it's been awesome. Is it having an adverse effect?
On the health of pictures. Maybe, but I still think the emphasis on
velocity and not just at the professionallevel, is a bigger factor orthosinc dot
com. I say it every singleweek. The awesome thing about Orthosincsey is

(01:10:17):
they have specialist in locations all overthe tri State, including a walk in
orthopedic urgent care during the week fromnine a m. To nine pm and
on Saturdays nine am to one pmat both Edgewood and Anderson. It is
easier because you don't need an appointmentand it's cheaper than going to an er
whenever you have an urgent orthopedic injury. Good to orthosinc dot com. That's

(01:10:40):
Ortho ci Ncy dot com. Brendimanto Jones on baseball coming up on ESPN
fifteen thirty. Hey, I justturned the microphone on. I just asked
a Paul question on x line. Thanks to our friends at United Heartland Insurance.
If you on to be a customerof just any old insurance company,

(01:11:03):
okay, If you want to bea customer of the greatest insurance company on
the planet, go to uhins dotcom. Will you buy into Matt McClain
not being heard anymore? Will bethe best trade deadline move is a Midsummer
thing. Vote Now at Moegar,we have a busy hour still in front
of us. I want to discussthat. We'll get to who I think

(01:11:25):
UK's head coach should be, andI'll tell you what t Higgins problem is
and try to find out if they'reactually going to play baseball Tonight on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Cincinnati'sESPN fifteen thirty. Traffic from the UC

you found Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. It's six out for five or a minute

(01:12:10):
late. Excuse me. This isESPN fifteen thirty on moegor, thank you
for listening. Hopefully you're having thegreatest Wednesday of your life. I started
tweeting local meteorologists. I tweeted RandyRico and she didn't write back, and
then I tweeted Alison Rodgers, who'sat Channel five, and she wrote back
and basically, because you know, there's a game tonight and the weather just

(01:12:34):
doesn't look great, and you knowwe're trying to provide a service here.
And Alison wrote me back and said, I wrote her because I was watching
the Channel five in studio here, and I wrote, we don't have audio
and studio. What are the chancesof seeing baseball versus staring at the tarp
tonight? There's nothing more boring thanstaring at the tarp. And she wrote

(01:12:56):
likely that lightning won't be much ofan issue, which is good, but
steady showers will be the name ofthe game. So keep that in mind
if you're thinking of heading to GABPtonight. We'll keep you updated on if
there's any official word from the Redsas to the status of tonight's game.
Reds and Brewers. Tonight's scheduled HunterGreen is supposed to pitch that the weather

(01:13:17):
looks even worse for tomorrow. Bythe way, if you haven't heard,
if you're planning on going to seeTravis Kelsey and Jason Kelsey tomorrow in the
New Heights podcast, they have movedthat event inside fifth third Arena for the
reasons you would expect if you knowanything about the weather, and that's not
going to be great tomorrow. TheReds are supposed to play tomorrow afternoon.
We'll see if that actually happens, and perhaps the uncertainty surrounding tomorrow's weather heightens

(01:13:43):
the urgency to play the baseball gametonight. Obviously it's the Brewers. The
Brewers come back later in the season. There are off days, but we'll
see, we'll see, I'll we'llpay attention to that for you. We
also have a poll question, needto vote for that. We'll get to
that in a bit five o'clock Happyhour. By the way, it's service
up. Michelobultra could go for oneof those right now. No real takeaway

(01:14:03):
from the game last night. FrankieMontas looked like a different pitcher just in
terms of command than he did inhis first two starts. Carson Spiers eight
four innings, which was great Unfortunately, the Reds late game comeback fell short.
They put two on nobody out inthe ninth inning, down four and
couldn't make anything of it, andunfortunately they lose tonight. We'll see if

(01:14:27):
Hunter Green I'm interested. You know, we've talked a lot about Hunter Green
really since they drafted him. Wehave seen no shortage of moments where Hunter
looks like a top end big leaguestarter. Unfortunately, often those moments have
been isolated. For him to achievewhat you and I want him to achieve,
which is, you know, eventuallybona fide staff ace, but before

(01:14:49):
that, you have to achieve reliability. Well, for that to happen,
there needs to be a run ofreally good starts, not two good,
one bad, one good, onebad, two good two bad. Like
not that you're not that you're notexcused for having a bad outing. Everybody
does. He's going to have them, he'll have more, but we're looking
for reliability, and so for thatto be the case. For him to

(01:15:12):
achieve that, he's gonna have tofollow up the good starts. And he
threw the ball well on Friday withanother good start, and then one more
after that, and then one moreafter that we'll see if that can happen
tonight, Reds and Brewers at GABP. I've asked a pole question thanks to
United at Heartland Insurance, based onwhat the the big takeaway for me last

(01:15:34):
night was. It had nothing todo with the game Matt McClain. David
Bell says, well, he feelsgreat, and that's awesome. Man.
I want everybody to feel great.Feeling great beats not feeling great. Feeling
greats better than feeling crappy. Andso David Bell yesterday said that he feels

(01:15:58):
great. The goal is to haveMatt McClain back in August. That's the
goal. It should be the goal, right, that'd be a good goal,
good goal to have if Matt McLain'sback in August. Yeah, oh
okay, now understand August is ais that's a big time for thirty one

(01:16:20):
days in August. Coming back onAugust first is different than coming back on
August thirty first. So, andit's also the goal. It's not the
expectation. So I love Matt McClain. How do you not? I think
he was their best player last year. We all wish Matt McLain was healthy.

(01:16:42):
This team is better with him availablethan not available. I am operating
under the assumption. This may bepessimistic, but I am. I am
operating under the assumption that Matt McClainis not going to play for the Reds
in twenty twenty four. And ifhe does, and I'm wrong, awesome,

(01:17:03):
Like who wants I know everybody inthis country is addicted to be in
right all the time and addicted tobeing agreed to. I want to be
wrong about this. I want tobe pleasantly surprised. I hope I am.
But I'm going to operate under theassumption Matt McClain cannot help the Reds
this year. And I'm also goingto operate under the assumption that if he

(01:17:25):
comes back, his ability to performat the highest level could be compromised by
things like residual soreness. We're justnot having enough time to get ready,
enough time to work himself to wherewe expect him to be when he is
healthy. And so one of thestorylines of this season, this is no

(01:17:45):
indictment against the team is currently constructed. Every good team in baseball is going
to be looking to get better thissummer around the trade deadline. By the
way, you're allowed to make tradeswell before the trade deadline. The most
frustrating summertime storyline last year it was, well the Reds, they could make

(01:18:06):
some trades to make their starting pitchingbetter. But you know, getting a
healthy Hunter Green and Nickelodolo. Thoseare really good trade deadline acquisitions too.
The best trade deadline acquisition is somethingyou don't have to give up anything for
Hunter Green coming back and Nicolotolo comingback. And yeah, man, it

(01:18:28):
sounds great. It didn't work. That's no fault of either guy. That's
certainly not Matt McLean's faults, notNickelodola's fault, really even Hunter Green's fault.
Hunter Green came back and for themost part didn't pitch well. Nicolodolo
never came back. So I ambegging that to not be the storyline this

(01:18:49):
offseason or the storyline this summer.I should say, let's let's let's not
do the Hey, hurt guys comingback. That's better than any trade deadline
acquisition. Please please tell me we'renot going to do that. Hurt guys
coming back. That beats anything wecan get via trade, and it's not

(01:19:11):
going to cost you anything. Iwant hurt guy back. My just assumption
is going to be it doesn't happen. I'm going to operate under the belief
that Matt McClain's next appearance in thefield for the Reds or at the plate
for the Reds, we'll be intwenty twenty five, and I'm open to
be pleasantly surprised. I hope Iam. And anything he gives this team

(01:19:31):
this year, to me is justit's gravy. It's an extra, it's
added value. I hope we getsome added value, but you have to
plan and strategize in ways that accountfor the added value or the best case
not happening. To be honest, this year is different than last year.

(01:19:51):
We're not going to do the wholeReds or ahead of schedule thing, assuming
they're in it, and I thinkthey will be. We're going to talk
about this team legitimately have chance also, can I can we can we shelve
once and for all. I knowwe're getting away ahead of ourselves because it's
April tenth and I'm talking about thetrade deadline. Remember last year, the

(01:20:12):
storyline when they didn't do anything, basically was this is what the guys in
the clubhouse wanted. First of all, hey, who cares. Secondly,
no, they didn't want the frontoffice to make the team better. So
let's head that one off as well. You could vote now on that.
Most of you are on my side. United Heartland Insurance sponsors our poll questions

(01:20:33):
at mowegar. Five one three, seven, four nine. We have not
had time for phone calls today. We'll change that up. Five one,
three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixty six, seven
two, three, seven, sevensix are our phone numbers. A few
other things today. John Caliperry isofficially the head coach at Arkansas. UH.
There's video of him in Fayetteville beinggreeted by the Arkansas mascot. I

(01:20:56):
don't I don't know what the Arkansasmascot's name is, and nor do I
care. So he's in Fayetteville.A lot of speculation about who may be
next, a lot of folks onthe internet having fun with the possibility of
Scott Drew and Dan Hurley. I'mwatching Channel five right now. There's a
picture of Dan Hurley and Billy Donovanand Scott Drew. There's Scott Drew taking

(01:21:17):
a picture of himself at some Wacolunch spot. As he put it,
Tusk. Tusk is the name ofthe place. No, it was the
name of the mascot. What's thename of the mascot? Is Tusk?
Tusk is the name of Arkansas's mascot. All right, very good, I
did not know that. I'll tellyou who I want, Kentucky's head coach.
I'm not a Kentucky fan, butI I am a fan of interesting,

(01:21:39):
and so I root for interesting. The most interesting name out there ain't
any of those three dudes I justmentioned. We'll get to that. We'll
take some phone calls and more.Next ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnatis. This
is ESPN fifteen thirty tomorrow on theshow I'm not here. Ricky Chino is
filling in. I took the dayoff because I I take off the first

(01:22:01):
business day special of the year formy own personal opening day. And I
did that last year and it gotrained out, and I'm gonna do it
this year, and well, judgingby what I'm looking at right now,
it's gonna get rained out. ButRick will be here and that'll give me
the entire afternoon to listen to Rick. So there you go. Twenty one
after five o'clock quickly on the Kentuckything. We were having fun with Scott

(01:22:27):
Drew, the Baylor coach and thephoto of him, and like, he's
kind of boring, right I talkedabout this in the in the first hour
of the show. You know, compared to Dan, Hurley is a just
a big personality and I think rightnow is considered the best coach in college
basketball. I think he is bigpersonality, says a lot of stuff and

(01:22:48):
not like says a lot of stuffto just say stuff. He answers questions.
Honestly, his sideline demeanor is loud, it's effective, and he's he's
the hottest thing in coaching right now. And so that would be incredibly fun
and good and interesting. And ifyou hired him, boy, that would

(01:23:08):
be that would be terrific. Ithink there's pros and cons. Billy Donnovan,
the pros are obvious. I thinkthe cons are obvious. Scott Rue
is boring, but that's okay.Like there's a big part of me that
thinks following up John Caliperry, whichfor six seven years was sizzle and substance,

(01:23:30):
and then the last five or sixyears has been a lot of sizzle,
not so much substance, never boring. You know what, I'm kind
of cool with. If I'm aKentucky fan, Give me boring. Give
me substance, right, don't.I don't need self help books and leadership
manuals and podcasts and him going onand he might coach on every single radio
show. Don't need somebody who's youknow, sitting at the draft every single

(01:23:54):
year. Just give me who's bigon Twitter? Give me boring. Give
me boring with substance? Now?Was Scott Drew since they won the title
in twenty twenty one, three straightpretty early exits, including one as a
one seed. But his teams weren'tboring. I'll do boring. Uh,
but I'll do boring. Luke Ficklewas boring. Let's be honest. Luke
Fickle's teams were awesome. Luke Fickleboring as hell. I'm the guy who

(01:24:19):
would help fund the Luke Fickle statueoutside Knippert Stadium. My guy couldn't be
more boring. Teams weren't Boring's fine. Boring's fine. And if I'm a
UK fan, I just dealt withfour or five years of just that act
The Cow Act getting old. Giveme somebody who doesn't have an act.
That's God true. Now I lovejust interesting there are You know, locally,

(01:24:44):
I don't want it to happen. But if Sean Miller would to be
the coach at Kentucky, that's interestingfor a lot of different reasons. It's
interesting for what it means for Xavier, interesting what it means for Kentucky.
For a while, it kind offelt like Shawn would just naturally be kind
of the cow two point z.But now I don't know, it doesn't
feel like he's in that first tierof coaches. People are talking about every

(01:25:05):
single piece that has been written aboutthe vacancy has I think every writer has
felt obligated to mention Rick Patino. Now that's fascinating, right, it's Rick
Patino coming home, coming back.Rick Patino is just an interesting character,
and wherever he is, it's interesting. That's interesting. You know what I

(01:25:25):
think most interesting is if Mitch Barnhartdecided, you know what, I'm gonna
be the coach who hires Don Staley. Like I'm a talk show host,
I'm in the interesting business. That'snot insanely interesting. By the way,
you can't convince me that there's nochance it would work. I don't know
that it would be guaranteed to work. I'm of the belief that if you

(01:25:50):
can teach, you could teach. If you can motivate, you can motivate.
If you could inspire, you couldexpire. If you could instruct,
you can instruct. If you couldhire a good staff and identify the right
people, you could do that nomatter what. I don't know who would
or wouldn't come play for her.I would like to think that in this
day and age, you wouldn't haveanybody who's like, you know what,
I'm not going to play at theUniversity of Kentucky because it's a woman coaching.

(01:26:12):
I'd like to think we're better thanthat. I don't know that it
would work. I don't know thatit would. I think it would be
fascinating because it's I think, rightnow, the biggest name in women's college
basketball coaching. I think you couldsuccessfully argue the best coach in the women's
game, not just jumping to themen's side. And not that I've never
bought that if you coach women's basketball, you have to coach men to validate

(01:26:35):
your coaching ability. Like we neversay that about men's college basketball coaches.
But it's not just boy Don Staley'sleaving to go coach a men's program somewhere.
It's coaching at Kentucky. I haveno idea if that is something that
minch Bar or Mitch Barnhart or thepeople in Lexington would even think about.

(01:26:55):
But like I'm a fan of afan. I say it every single day
on this show. I'm a fanof interesting more than anything else, especially
when it comes to teams that aren'tmine. And by the way, if
Wes Miller were to leave UC andthey hired Don Staley, I think that'd
be cool. Just let's let's Youcan't tell me she would fall flat on
her face. Cannot convince me ofthat. So I'm not the first person

(01:27:18):
to bring this up. I'm noteven necessarily suggesting it. I could.
I could walk through the pros andcons of any any number of these coaches,
and I have with Scott Drew, who seems to be the most talked
about person today. But like thatstoryline, this uber successful coach, big
personality, I think it would welcomethe challenge Kentucky. Whoever they hire that's

(01:27:45):
already gonna be one of the majorstorylines of the year first season post col
dude, give me that storyline andI would be more willing to bet now
work what would that? You know, that's subjective. Did John Caliperry work
in Lexington well on one level?Yes, on one level, got one
title in fifteen years. Could youwin a national championship with Don Staley?

(01:28:09):
Yeah? I think you could. And I say that not having followed the
women's game all that closely, butyeah, I think you could. I
do know it would be incredibly fascinating. So that's what I'm rooting for.
But if if you're balking at boring, Scott Drew like, Okay, fine,
boring Sid Sometimes boring is sometimes boringcan work, man, especially if

(01:28:30):
it's following you know, somebody whodidn't bring a lot of substance to the
table. And as big a Caliperiguy as I am, the last few
years, it was it just it. I kept saying that it felt like
the Act is old right. TheAct got old right, kind of like
mine five poet three seven four nine, fifteen thirty, U, Mike,
thanks for hanging on. You're onESPN fifteen thirty goad ain't gonna happen what

(01:28:57):
you're talking about with I mean,if that's not interesting, but that might
happen in a more progressive states, say California, that ain't happening back here.
But I like the idea. It'svery it's very interesting. So I
appreciate you bringing that up because Ihaven't even thought of it. That's what
I'm here for, Mike, tobring up ideas that others haven't thought of.
Well, you have the newest fanthat I've never told you about,

(01:29:21):
and it's my daughter. Yeah, her name is Karen. She's forty three
years old. She lives in Atlanta. She's a veterinarian. And she called
me. I'm not going to tellyou this well back she called me about
three or four months ago, andshe said, Dad, I got so
sick of trying to call you,and you say, you're on a hole

(01:29:43):
with MO and you didn't have youknow, you wanted to talk to Moe,
she said, So I asked youwhat station? Man? She listening
to you every day and she's acouple of the people in the office or
was and unto you, Shay.So it's just crazy how things can work.
But but her getting pissed off aboutyou dominating my afternoon phone calls made

(01:30:10):
her a new listener. Well that'sthat's awesome. We'll certainly take her.
Does does your phone does it nothave call waiting? Yeah, because but
sometimes it's time. I kind ofiPhone. I don't know. I'm not
good techimo, so I'm not sure. I'm looking at an email from you
that you sent a little before wewent on the air when I was on
with Tony and you referred to ourshow as childish. So what is it?

(01:30:34):
Oh, I don't know what wasI talking about? Oh that was
following that cal the Drew stuff that. Yeah, yeah, I'm not great
on picking my adjectives sometimes or whatever. But sorry, sorry, sorry.
We were having fun with the funpart of life. Didn't mean to have
fun, didn't mean to do that, God forbid. We have fun with
sports? Yeah, okay, welllove then? Uh but uh huh.

(01:31:00):
You know you were talking about CharlesOakley. That interested me a lot.
I wanted to talk about baseball, and I do want to ask you about
the rectangle that we look at forballs and strikes. That topic seems to
me to be very interesting in thein the long hall here. But when
you're talking about Charles Oakley. Istarted thinking about the plastic power forwards,

(01:31:20):
and I thought of Mo Lucas RickMahorne. Remember a guy named the Lucius
Jackson that played for the for theSixers back in the seventies. You heard
of him? Uh? Did heplay at Long Beach State? No,
he played at Rio Grand Valley,Okay, of all places. But he
was a quintessential you know, nota big score, but just a dirty

(01:31:44):
player. And he played. Iguess he played when Wilt was up there
maybe, and uh and chet toJeff Bradley and those guys. But yeah,
he was. He was an intimidatingfigure. Lucius Jackson. I was
a kid, and I was kindof afraid of him. Actually, just
time, I thought, Oh,meet that cat. I'm afraid. We're
going to interview Charles Oakley on Friday, and I'm a I'm intimidated, Mike.

(01:32:06):
I think it sounds cool as hell. Me too, especially especially if
he lets me hang out with himwhen he comes to town for the Big
Three. Oh, you'll be likequinte essential. That's quint essential Knickerbocker.
Heaven? Is that correct? Well? Yes, but I mean I don't
know any any basketball fan who wouldn'twant to hang out with Charles Oakley on

(01:32:30):
a Saturday night downtown Cincinnati or whereverhe is, and he doesn't have to
be downtown. He might, youknow, just come out to my neck
of the woods or something, orwe could do like a southern Kent County
bar crawl. Whatever. As longas oak lets me hang out with him,
I'll be happy. Oh. Iused to admire him because he now
was he not? Was he knownto be really like a trash talker.
I didn't see him being there.I just seen him being a tough,

(01:32:53):
band ass dude, like you said, not a trash talker. No,
he was an enforcer, but hewas an enforcer who could play. Like
there are enforcers who couldn't play, like Rick mulhorne was an enforcer. That
dude couldn't play a lick on offense. Now you know, Charles Oakley can
knock down an open fifteen foot jumpshot. Charles Oakley was a good passer.
He was a terrific offensive rebounder. So you know, there are enforcers

(01:33:16):
who could play, and then thereare enforcers who can play, and Charles
Oakley was the former, not thelatter. And then then you were talking
about the list of guys that youwould most love to interview, and you
know who I would have loved tohave heard you interview was Chick her.
I would feared that with all thosephrases, that I was just looking through

(01:33:41):
those phrases again, though it's unbelievable. It's like a basketball encyclopedia, slammed
on airball, finger roll. Thoseare just three of the common terms we
use now, but there's twenty orthirty other ones. And boy, I
think he would have had a greatinterview with Chick. Yeah, and I'd
probably be the only person into it. What did you want to say about
the baseball strike zone? The rectangle? The rectangle sore? Where are you

(01:34:04):
on this? Possibly going to thecomputer versus the home plate umpire? I
believe that I believe that games playedby human beings should be officiated solely by
human beings. Okay, now letme think of the next question. Over

(01:34:26):
your years being objective, have youseen the quality of ball and strike counts
go down, stay the same,or get better? I don't know,
because we've only had the data thatwe use to judge umpiring in real time
for so many years. So youknow, if I was watching a baseball
game twenty years ago, that superimposedstrike zone you see wasn't there. We

(01:34:51):
didn't have these precise location where thepitch crossed the plate on the screen.
As soon as the pitch is delivered. We didn't have of information in the
palms of our hands that would tellus instantly whether or not the call was
missed. So how accurate we're umpiresthen versus now? I have no idea.
I think is a general rule theydo pretty well. But are there

(01:35:15):
calls that are missed? Sure?I think that's the case in twenty twenty
four. I think that was thecase in nineteen eighty four. You know,
I used to watch games with mydad when I was growing up,
and he would complain about the umpire. He would complain about the balls and
strikes, and I've always just boughtthat as an inherent part of the game.

(01:35:36):
I am okay with dealing with theimperfections that come with the human element.
I really am. What I wantare when we great umpires, when
we have ones that we know arebad, get rid of them. We
know Angel Hernandez is a terrible umpire, We know that CB Buckner is a

(01:35:57):
bad umpire, not just because ofhow they call the balls and strikes,
their confrontational manner with players and managers, some of the judgment calls that they
make that are quite obvious, LikeI'm not looking for perfection, but let's
take the people that are truly badat what they do and get rid of
them. But I don't know that. I don't know the calling balls and
strikes is is better today or worsetoday than it was forty years ago.

(01:36:20):
I just know that we have bettertools that tell us in real time whether
a pitch was a ball or astrike and whether it was called accurately.
And so I have a hard timecomparing what we what we're getting now versus
what we used to get. Doyou do you think that the okay?
So, do you know if theumpires have a really strong union, in

(01:36:43):
other words, based on your youranalysis there, if they're really bad,
get rid of Is it really hardto get rid of these guys? Yeah?
Yeah, the the the the theumpires have a union and they have
a labor contract, and so,you know, we always talk about the

(01:37:05):
relationship that a sports league has withits players associations. I think the relationship
between the leagues between Major League Baseballand its umpire. Union should be good
enough that we reward the good onesand we get rid of the bad ones.
Make it work like players, right, players get rewarded, the bad
ones get cut. Umpiring doesn't workthat way, Mike, I gonna run

(01:37:28):
man, Okay, thanks Pal.Yeah, I know that's an unpopular take.
I think the games played by humanbeings should be officiated by human beings
entirely. This is ESPN fifteen thirtyCincinnati's EFL thing sports headlines and service to
Kelsey, Chevrolet, Reds and Brewersright now schedule to play at six point
forty. See if that actually happens. Third of four. Red's trying to

(01:37:50):
bounce back after losing last night.Hunter greenwaye Mia least six forty seven hundred
WLW. John Caliperry is the coachat Arkansas. Now, Sagetalino is entering
the transfer portal, and I guessthat means he's going to leave the University
of Cincinnati. Wes Miller. Ithink has has kind of gotten the best
of both worlds, where the guysthat you were hoping would stay have announced

(01:38:15):
their staying, and yet there's stillsome room to work with given players who
have departed that you might have thoughtwould be better for departing where the school
would be better for their departure.I don't know that I put that the
right way, but who cares.Let's talk to other people. Let's see
here, Jared, thanks for hangingon. You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
What's up? Hi? How youdoing? Never been better? What's going

(01:38:40):
on? I'd like to apologize aboutmy voice. I lost about three weeks
ago. I don't know if it'sthe Oakland game or what. There many
times, been there many times. So I called you. Actually, I
think it was two years ago whenJay Wright retired and I said, obviously
he did it to be Kentucky's nextman coach. Uh it's all basis,

(01:39:02):
but uh, Don Salley is incredible. That that's crazy one. You're better
than that? Why am I betterthan that? I mean, I know
you're a bourbon guy. I justdidn't know you had a couple of dreams.
I didn't say it was talking aboutit. I didn't say it's going
to happen. I root for interesting. That's not interesting. Well, here's
my thing. I would like tosay this about Scott Drew it could possibly

(01:39:25):
be a solid higher you know, that's cool, But what what's really grinding
my gears will say as the factthat him and Mitge Barnhart are close and
it almost seemed like a done dealbefore it happened. And uh no,
you know, I got a lotof buddies, my UC buddies, UC
fans. I had one text me, uh today and he said, welcome

(01:39:49):
to death Row. I'll see youin the n it. So he's telling
me that nobody wants well, he'syou know, they're he's loving that it
seems that nobody wants to come toKentucky. And I don't know if you
watched Billy Donovan's interview, but Ithink Billy document made it clear about four

(01:40:11):
times that he had not been contactedand he was committed to the Bulls for
the rest of the year. Andto me, quite frank, if Mitch
Barhart doesn't go get Billy Donovan,if you don't make that own call,
you gotta go. Yeah. Doyou do you believe him when he says
that no? That's my point isso Dan Hurley has also never said no,

(01:40:33):
I wouldn't go to Kentucky. Hesaid, ask my wife buddy.
How many times? How many timeshave people called you about a situation and
they're like, hey man, youwant to go out and do this and
you're like, uh, let meask my wife, and you use that
as the excuse to get out ofwhatever it is. So I think that

(01:40:54):
they should swingheart. And here's thething. I remember hearing a story about
Rick Watina years ago, and Idon't know who said it, but they
were talking about it was the coachthat said, you know, we recruited
kids for two and a half yearsand then all of a sudden, you
see Rick Patina walk in and youknow it's over kids going and they need
a name like that. And Ithink Billy Donovan coming to Kentucky would be

(01:41:17):
the greatest story of college basketball sinceRick Fatina coming. Would you be worrying
at all about the fact that hehas been out of the college game for
nine years? Absolute killer? No, I'm not worried about that now his
resumes even stronger, mild success inthe NBA. I wouldn't say he's Phil
Jackson, but I mean people talkingabout the NBA being a better gig and

(01:41:41):
not recruiting. And Billy Donovan alsopointed out to that and said, I
like recruiting. He said, thething that I don't like is there no
there's no prizes for second place.I think he's begging them to call him.
I mean, he's with the Bulls. You're in the NBA. They're
paying guys thirty million a year.I can't hit a jump shot, you
know what I'm saying. So Ithink there's I think, I mean,
I think there's pros and cons toboth. I mean, I could certainly

(01:42:04):
see why someone would prefer the abilityto have more say over what the roster
is in college, and I cancertainly understand why someone would want their professional
fortunes tied to adults and not kidsin the NBA. So I don't know
that one is better than the other. I mean, like Billy Donovan's been
awesome coach, I do think thatthe landscape of the sport has changed so

(01:42:25):
much that it would be interesting.I'm not saying he couldn't do it,
but I think it'd be interesting tosee in the world that we're in now
in college basketball, which has changeddramatically since Billy Donovan left Florida, I
think it'd be interesting to see howhe would adjust and Again, I'm not
saying he couldn't do it, butI could certainly understand why that that would
give one pause in comparing him topeople who are actively working in college basketball

(01:42:48):
right now. Well, and I'llsay this also about Califari is you know
he tried to get ahead of thetransfer portal thing. He got CJ.
Frederick. You guys got a littledose to c J. Frederick this year.
You know. Hey, people weresaying, oh my god when he
was come Kentucky, look at that. Look at his uh three point percentage.
The guy was average in twelve minutesa game in Iowa, and Kentucky

(01:43:11):
fans are so ignorant they got excitedof it, you know. And I'm
like, this guy, you know, but you never, I mean you
never. You never got a chanceto really watch him because he was hurt.
Well I get that, But whatI'll say it is his first year
in Iowa, he averaged close tothirty minutes a game for a team that
was in the running for a oneseed. So I don't think that that
assessment's very fair. Wow. Well, I was looking at a sophomore year

(01:43:34):
before he came, and it wasyou know, I didn't know that he
was hurt at Iowa. I didn'tyou know. I mean that Iowa he
averaged twenty eight and then twenty fiveminutes a game. I don't believe that.
Well, I'm looking at it rightnow. His freshman year he averaged
twenty eight point seven minutes a gamefor a team that was was really,

(01:43:54):
really good. So I mean youcould look at you, you could choose
not to believe it. But I'mgiving you. I didn't know you were
looking at it. I didn't knowyet. I didn't know you pulled it
up like that boat. But Iwant to say this about Calipari and what
hurts about it is Calipari was alwayswhat if? What if? These boys
can do this? Do that? And next year is the first year that

(01:44:15):
twenty five and twenty six year oldsare not playing college basketball anymore. And
his brand, what he created withthe recruits and the talent and you know
whatever. I think that it's goingto be more influential in basketball moving forward
to college basketball. I mean,we dealt with COVID, I mean went
to Calipari really fall apart. Itstarted with COVID. You know, yeah,

(01:44:38):
twenty one they were awful. Ithink what you're I think what you're
seeing is you're seeing in the gametoday a different model than a different version
of the model that John Keller Perrybrought to Kentucky, because I always felt
like he didn't get credit for winningwith a new team every year, right
for the folks who back in theday were turning their nose up at one

(01:45:00):
and duns and didn't like that approach. I always thought, look, he's
taking on a really challenging job. He's taking he has a new team every
year, and by the way, sometimes it really works. Sometimes it kind
of works, sometimes it doesn't.The year after they won the title,
they made the n I T.But that's really hard to do. Now
coaches are doing that, they're bringingin a new team every year, but
they're doing it with dudes who haveplayed college basketball before. And it felt

(01:45:23):
like John Caliperry was either incapable orunwilling to embrace that way of doing things.
Jared, I got a run,man, have a good one.
I appreciate the call, guy Iforgot for your sake. I hope you're
right. For my Sega, hopeit's Don Staley. Billy Donovan is interesting.
Don Staley is more interesting. Iroot for interesting. I root for

(01:45:47):
me and what I want is interesting. But yeah, the Billy Donovan thing.
Look, that dude could coach andhe was better at OKAC in the
NBA than people remember. They justthey couldn't get past the first round,
but they always sort of played tothe level of talent they had and sometimes
even overachieved. I do think you'rebeing fair if you go, Okay,

(01:46:09):
here's a guy who's been out ofthe game for nine years and it's changed.
There was no transfer portal, therewas no nil back then. I
mean, it's just it is somuch different now. Could he adjust probably,
But you're using probably versus people whoare in the sport right now,
who you know can successfully navigate thecurrent landscape of the sport. It is

(01:46:30):
eleven away from US six ESPN fifteenthirty. Kruger always gives you some It
is five away from six. Thisis ESPN fifteen thirty. My name's Moegar.
Tomorrow on the show, Ricky Chinawill be filling in, and so
be nice. Tim Tarn Are youand Rick gonna do a wrestling segment?
We're actually going to do the wholefirst hour to counter part the race Oh

(01:46:50):
to little counter programming, So recappingWrestleMania possibly looking ahead to SummerSlam? Is
that coming up next? Not tillAugust? We have time for that,
Okay, little premature to be divinginto that. All right, Well,
if you love professional wrestling, they'regonna be breaking down. Did you think

(01:47:12):
WrestleMania was good this year? Itwas? Yeah? Yes, I think
he would enjoy it if you wouldwatch. Really yes. I was on
social media on Sunday night trying tofollow all the John Caliperi stuff, and
the people who I know who lovewrestling were pretty excited about what was happening
at WrestleMania. So I can't wait. I can't wait to find out Rick

(01:47:33):
and Terrence take on the Big wrestlingshow. Anyway, Rick is in tomorrow
for me, and then we're backon for Charles Oakley will be on this
show at four h five on Friday, which you either find completely stupid and
if you do, I get it. Like I understand if I was,
if I was the typical listener ofthis show, I would think, why

(01:47:56):
is Charles Oakley coming on? Iget it. I get it, But
you know, sometimes we do somethings for me. We're gonna do that
on Friday for me, and itmay be it is that, Like I've
heard him do interviews and they're notgood sometimes, So we'll see. We'll
see what we get. But CharlesOakley will be on the show on Friday
and then next week a whole bunchof draft stuff. If you miss speaking

(01:48:19):
of draft stuff, yesterday, ourbuddy Paul Danner Junior, if you missed
the time we spent with him,you can find that on the iHeartRadio app
also the podcast page of ESPN fifteenthirty dot com. Earlier on the show
we had with this Scott Saderfield. As we get said for UC spring game
on Saturday, we'll have that podcastfor you as well. Podcast of our

(01:48:40):
show. Service of a long nextsports grill with three locations in northern Kentucky
a great place to chill out tonightand watch maybe maybe the Reds. We're
done, Thank you so much forlistening. Thanks to Taran Bland for producing.
We're back on Friday at three ohfive. Don't forget Tony and Austin

(01:49:00):
