(00:00):
Are you ready for some football?Hi? This is Dan Horr, joined
Dave Lapham and me for every playof every game on the official home of
the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty. All right, here we go. It's
three minutes ATNY four o'clock. Thisis ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is
Moeger. Thank you so much forjoining us. I would typically sort of
outline everything we have coming up inthe hour, but we have a guest

(00:21):
on hold who's very important, andI don't want to make them wait.
The Big Threes seventh season gets underwayon June the fifteenth. If you don't
know, the Big Three is aprofessional three on three basketball league. You
can find its games on CBS ParamountPlus and this season streamed on x and.
The Big Three is going to becoming to Cincinnati this summer July the

(00:42):
twenty eighth, at the Heritage BankCenter. Tickets went on sale today.
You can buy them at Big threedot com. Among the players participating familiar
face Jordan Crawford, who obviously hada terrific career at Xavier University. The
team I'm rooting for is the KillerThrees, which since two thousy seventeen has
been coached by a former NBA AllStar, a two time All Defensive teamer,

(01:06):
and the hard and soul of teamsthat I revered to this day and
one of the coolest people to everplay the sport, Charles Oakley, who's
with us on ESPN fifteen thirty. It is awesome to have you. Thank
you for joining us. How areyou. I'm good, Thank you for
having me, and thanks for theintro. Well. I could have kept

(01:26):
going, but I didn't want to. I didn't want to embarrass you.
Okay, Well, hey, Idon't think I can get embarrassed no more
than I was in the garden,So it's okay, all right, Well
I wasn't going to go there.I first want to talk about You've been
in the Big Three really since itsinception. It's year seven. It feels
like the league is getting bigger andbigger. It's getting more and more coverage.

(01:48):
What has it been like watching theleague kind of take off. I've
been good. I think give iceCube and Jeff praised them for starting to
leave for guys who played in theleague. Sometime guys to have a long
career, Guys still have talent, and I think the Big three is the
league that you know you can seeguys talent. You know, some people
watch it. You know it's funwith the kids to interact with the game.

(02:08):
But uh, it's something special.I think that once you come and
watch it and see that it's notpeople think, well, just another the
lead. It's fourteen seconds and yougot to be in shape and you got
you got to just know that heain't no help in this game. You
got to keep a guy in frontof you. And you know, like
the era that you played in physicalplay, trash talk, stuff like that

(02:30):
is isn't just allowed, it's butit's almost encourage right. It's a lot
of in the Big Three, alot of trash talking, a lot of
you got to have to pull yourpants up and play some defense, and
if you don't, somebody can giveyou thirty points. A real ease in
this game. Is that your coachingadvice pull your pants up and play defense.

(02:51):
Well, my my advice to myguys is don't make a fool of
yourself. Don't come out and justshoot, shoot, shoot and think that
you know it's it's really a teameffort, because like I said, you
got to keep a guy in frontof you at all times, and you
know, ain't so many shots you'regonna get. U know that every shot,
you know, make sure you geta good value shot that you know

(03:12):
is a team shot. And someof these guys sometimes call your own self,
but you know in home ways andI think I'm gonna take this guy
every time. It's not easy sometimesso but uh it's good thought. Uh.
You see all these guys come outthere and show that they still can
play, and that's a plus.Yeah, no question. Now, when
you when you first started coaching inthe Big Three, correct me if I'm

(03:35):
wrong. At the end of yourfirst season, you suit it up.
Is there any chance of that everhappening? I might have a suit on,
but I won't be playing. Butno, it was fun. Well,
you know we were short with aguy. I still have some of
them. I still have some gas, about half a tank of gas in
the tank. And I just willto try to be a team player.
But I probably won't be playing, but I will be getting on my guys.

(03:58):
I think they ride them. I'msaying, well, if you got
to sell them that what just doingthe hard? You gotta ride them.
So but my guys said, I'dbe too tough on them sometime, but
it's part of the game. Youknow, these guys, they you know,
they don't want you to say nothingto them. Everybody wants to get
into their own bag. You know, they ain't always get into your bag,
you know, So sometime I,you know, let them know the
hang we steal a team It's stilla team effort, no matter what you

(04:23):
say about into your bag. Soso like when your guys are practicing,
like you'll get out there with themand push them around and stuff. Well,
we go through some drills every now, with some shooting drills, and
you know, I think early thatfirst couple of years, I was on
the floor with them banging up youknow, some post moves. But now
I just let them come in.We only like strimmings, like thirty forty

(04:44):
minutes a day before a game andget a lot of shots up and go
some plays and how we gonnacurd onwhat we play. We try to come
up with a good scheme to hto slow them down. All right,
So now I want to go backto your first your first year you're coaching
in the Big Three and you suitup and then at the time Kenyan Martin
was playing and like I felt likea kid in the middle of two parents

(05:04):
fighting, because well, Kenyan Martin'sone of my favorite all time players,
and then Charles Oakley is one ofmy favorite all time players. And they
had beef, and I felt Ifelt torn. Has has that been settled?
Are you guys? Okay? Itreally would no beef? You know,
beef is what you buy from thestore and you cook it. And
he didn't want this beef. Hedon't want to smoke. And I told

(05:26):
him that you're too small for me. You got to go talk to somebody's
side. So you keep playing withme. You ain't gonna be coaching to
no ways longer. So I toldhim that he understands. You know.
You know sometimes people try to theyforget when somebody's that you forget what you
had and you gotta realize that.Oh no, okay, I made a
mistake, but he made a mistake. But it's okay. I don't hold
the person with him. You know, I could say he's the hometown favor

(05:48):
up there. You know, Ilike it. You know, he my
FAF a lot, but he's nottough as he talked. So they go
with that. But are you andKenyon are okay though, you guys are
all right. I'm I'm okay anytimeI'm I'm I can't walk around now He's
he just like you know, hejust mouthall. He just made either that
mouth off to the wrong guy. That's all. Sometimes Stephen Jackson, he

(06:11):
mouthed off. He gotta realize,Hey, you're talking to somebody. He
gonna bring the smoke. I ain'tgonna just get sit there. I'm bringing
the smoke. Yeah, what if? What if? What if Kenyon's here
on July twenty eighth and Cincinnati?Would that be I mean for me that
you, you and Kenyon in thesame building would be all right? Yeah?
I mean I like I said,I had a problem Older Thought.

(06:31):
A few of the guys, youknow, when they played for he played
for Houston, they said, Iwant to talk. You know, we're
going to the gym and play, you know, in the summertime. If
somebody said Older Thought is in thegym, I said, I'm gonna be
in the gym too. I'm comingto his house. I don't. I
ain't scared of no coming, youknow whatever. But now yeah, they
okay, is you know everybody justtalking talk a lot now, but I
ain't never seen a kid in thefight, so I'm waiting to see him

(06:55):
in a fight. All right.Well then maybe maybe July twenty eighth,
Big three dot Com get tickets. The Big Three is coming to a Heritage
Bank Center. Charles Oakley, uh, the Great Charles Oakley, coach of
the Killer Threes. Now that theBig Three reportedly made an offer to Caitlin
Clark, well, what do youmake of her? If she were decided
to do it, she could playin the w NBA but also be in
the Big Three. Do you thinkshe could do more than hold her own?

(07:18):
I mean she can shoot, sowhen you can, when you get
a shot like Curry, you canstress the floor. But I think it
might be a little physical. Butit'd be great for the Big Three to
bring more people with more eyes toTV, more you know, interest to
the game. But you know,we say one one come, another one
might come. So hey, Idon't mind if the guys don't try to

(07:40):
You know, I would try out, you know, our power them.
I don't. I wouldn't want tosee that. But I don't like I
say, when you when you lacethem up, you gotta know where you're
at. So the big thing iscan you can you beat these guys up
the dribble? Can you do this? Can you? You know, because
they gonna bang, They're gonna youknow, so if that work out,
she can come and be successful,be great for the Big Three. But

(08:01):
uh, she's Hey, she's tough, she's a tough players. You know,
she's feisty. So hey, hey, I wouldn't count out, you
know, because the girls these daysis really good. They know how to
play and they know how to playwithin themselves. So more power to her.
It'd be grateful to league. Butif she don't, we still don
the Big Three, still don't gohome. Yeah, no, no,
no question about that. You youyou played in an era. And look,

(08:24):
I love basketball. I love everylevel of basketball. But you know,
for for some of us, they'recalling technical fouls too quickly. They
could guy dunks and looks at thedude he dunked on the wrong way.
They tee him up, and thenguys getting each other's faces. But but
nothing ever really happens, Like,is is there anybody who's playing today that

(08:45):
you go, you know what,I'd love to get a chance to like
knock him down in the paint atleast one time, just once. Uh,
I didn't really look at the gameright there. I just played with
whoever in front of me. Butit's a lot of front runners, you
know. You know, a lotof guy gonna talk, man because they
get they know that they teammate goesain't gonna let them fight this and that.

(09:05):
But I think back in the days, if you talk, they ain't
give you a chance. They justsomebody gonna just get you in your mouth.
But uh, you know, it'sjust differently. It's you know,
you talk about these guys, theyreally sensitive and I just love how they
time I had my time. Youknow, they let us play physical.
When something wrong you have to hellon your business. So it's a different
time. Yeah, no, there'sno question about that. Do you ever
do you ever watch old footage ofyourself and go, oh, holy crap,

(09:28):
it's it's a lot different now thanit was back then. I mean,
if I just watch the game,I watch the footage. I just
watched the game. You know, all the dudes run high, pick and
roll, side, pick and roll, and when you score one hundred and
forty hundred fet the points. Iknow, back in the day, the
demmer Nuggets and the Phoenix Sun usedto. But in this era that you
know, it's it's it's like Ithink they played like twenty five percent defense.

(09:52):
We played at least eighty five percentdefense. It was more tough for
the score. I think now, like I said with Murray play, Michael
play, can these guys have fortypoints? I think they definitely have a
forty points. But you know, like I say, it's they time and
it's a Europeans it's a global league. Now you got a lot of Europeans
in the league who are making adifference. I think when we played,

(10:13):
you might have had ten European players. Now you might have one hundred and
fifty. It's a big difference. So the league is definitely a global market.
Now are there players you see nowthat you go you know what?
That guy would have thrived in anera that was more physical. I mean,
yeah, you got some of thembecause it's a lot of skills guys.
So my thing is would've been efficient, that's the thing. Yeah,

(10:37):
they would have been okay, butwith deficient numbers took over back in the
old age, I don't think so. I think a lot of guys would
have had problem some nights on thecourt because some guys, you know,
gonna come at some guys who thinkthey did and that, but especially you
know, there's always been a ofcourse, can these guys playing. I
here and they say, well, can we playing? Can we play now?

(10:58):
I think we definitely played now withno problem. They would have had
a little problem back in the otherdays. Yeah. Uh so I thought
yesterday I grew up. I'm inCincinnati, but I grew up a huge
Knicks fan. So OJ Simpson passesyesterday and everybody's what were you doing during
the Bronco Chase? And my responseis I was yelling. I was watching

(11:20):
the game and yelling at NBC toget this Bronco chase off because it's Nicks
Rockets, It's Game five and I'mliving and breathing orange and blue. Uh,
take me back to that night,an iconic night in American history.
Did you have any idea what wasgoing on outside of Madison Square Garden?
What what thing comes up that night? We didn't know until late and then

(11:41):
I think some type of way,uh, someone got to hit what was
going on. But we really didn'tget involved into the whole chase into afterwards.
But you know, it's a biggame, and you know fans,
I guess, you know, Idon't think cell phone was big big back
then like it is now. Butsomeone they was, they they found out
what was going on, so theygot a lot of the fans' attention.

(12:03):
But it was just a sad momentwhat happened. And it's sad, you
know he's not here them more. But uh, you know, life go
on. You know, we lostthe series to Houston, but it was
a great series though. Yeah, but you won. You won that night,
and that night that's all like hedid lose a series. I wasn't
going to bring that up, butyou won that night, and and it's
become a footnote. And for me, I honestly didn't really care much about

(12:26):
O. J. Simpson. Iall I wanted to do was watch Game
five. And so when that Broncochase comes up, I remember being at
the time, sixteen years old andjust rooting like hell for the Knicks to
beat the Rockets. Had you wonthat series, it would have been awesome.
But it did happen. We couldhave we had he was up three
to one, three two, yeah, and went back to Houston for two.
We lost both, but he wasit went seven and it went down

(12:48):
to the last two or three possessions. He used to you know, Key
was a tough king, was toughfor us. He heard us every game.
You know, I don't think wewe didn't really show him now and
he knew how to the ball outthe past on the double team. He
knew how to you know, justhe had an IQ was so high,
you know, because he played bothin the court at a high level.

(13:09):
And uh that what really hurt usthe series and uh you know it happened
like that. Yeah, it's stillit still kills me thirty years later.
Now you're you're from Cleveland. Haveyou have you have you spent any time
at all in Cincinnati? Uh?Yeah, I mean Tim mc game played
the Bingo. We went the samehigh school. Yeah, I go.
I just go to the jazz festalall the time. My nephew with the

(13:33):
Miami o'how Uh So I was inCincinnatio a lot, you know, jazz
Fest a lot, and I wasgrowing up. You know, I used
to come down to the jazz Festand uh and then I just to go
to Cincinnati, you know, summertime. You know, they really changed Cincinnati
for us. You know, itwas used to be out the crime and
this and that. They fix itup downtown, so at least they make

(13:54):
it the change. Now here's thething. So you guys are here for
the Big Three on the twenty eighth. The Jazz Fast which is now the
Cincinnati Music Festival, is that weekend. It's that. I think it's the
Friday and Saturday night. You couldgo. You could go to I'll go
with you. That'd be fun.Right, Oh, I'm definitely gonna go.
I heard it. I've seen somethingin the lineup. I'm definitely gonna
go to the jazz. I loveit. I love the jazz Truffer.

(14:16):
So I'm gonna work on that, trying to come in a Friday and Saturday
because I like that, you know, like just the people coming down and
as like a family re union. They joined them two or three days and
now they get a casino down there, and they got good food downtown on
the walk. So Cincinnati is doinga lot of good things. That beingals
winning, you know, so youknow, the baseball team coming around,
so the city is getting this, you know, infrastruction coming back, revenue

(14:39):
is coming back. That's good. It's good. For Ohio here, you
know, being from Cleveland, Ohio, it's not a house. So it's
it's like, hey, we allenter it together. Yeah. Not wait
a minute now, I mentioned themusic fast. You said you're gonna go,
but like the can I go withyou? We can't. I mean,
you can get me backstage? Igo with you. You have severe

(15:01):
limitations there. But if I we'llfigure that out, now, are you?
Are you? Let's do that?We could go. We probably get
back stage. I mean, youknow, I probably know somebody wanted the
groups because I know a lot ofthe entertainers, because they gonna have a
lot of the Old Schools one night, the Legend one night, so the
new the New Generation one night. So we bet we definitely can get backstage
one of them shows. Saturday,July twenty seventh, New Edition is playing.

(15:24):
You know any of those guys,Yes, I do. I know
all those all right, You andme hanging out with the guys in New
Edition. My producer Terren's gonna wantto go too, though. Okay,
no problem. We can all gettogether and go hang out. You know,
take the picture with the guys.Oh man, I'm dude, I'm
I'm in Are you now against theBengals stadium. You're a Browns fan,
Brown and the Guns. Okay, all right, you know I like what

(15:46):
Cincinnata doing. Uh you know,I went to the Super Bowl with Burrow
when they played uh Kansas City,Kanas City, right, they played the
Ram They should have won that game. They came out with a big play
the second half and seemed like afterthat, I mean a couple a couple
of third down It's just like withus, a couple of free throws and
a couple of jump shot. ButI think that uh you know, it

(16:07):
was a young team, but youknow, to lose three points and I
mean you had I mean, Donaldjust got loose. You know, I
think Burrol was trying to make aplay. I can remember everything happened in
that game. But uh, itwas a great game. It was in
It was in LA because I wentto skip Roll. We fed like fifteen
hundred people. So I was runninglate to get to the game and I

(16:29):
got there it was like right beforehalftime, and uh, you know,
I enjoyed myself because you know,I went I went to Cincinnati, I
mean, you know, Cincinnati andthe Rams. Then I went to the
next year, I went to uhThen I went last year, then I
went this year, I went tothe Super Bowl. I went to Philly
in Kansas City. Then this yearI went to the super Bowl in Vegas.

(16:51):
So I go to a lot ofI liked. I liked. I
liked the contact. Even though theytook a lot out of the game.
I still like going just to seethe gether, you know, the guys
just know, go out there andplay the game at a high level.
What was Super Bowl weekend in Vegaslike for you? You know, we
went to the rescue squad and themission and we feed like a thousand people.

(17:14):
It was good, you know, because they had everything right. We
went. It spaced out and thestadium is away from the strips, so
it was good. And you know, they had a lot of little stuff
going on and rain one day.But I think, oh, well,
you know, I went to Fanatic. You know, Fanatic had a nice
party. I went. I ain'treally hang out too much. Lebron and
he had a little party. Hislookual line, but I, you know,

(17:34):
just try to just stay low.It was good though. And then
but the Bengals Super Bowl, yougot there at halftime. Yes ago,
we were at skid roll. Wewere seeing the people in la you were
doing that. You were doing communitywork, right. I do that everywhere
we go. We most time inBig I might try to do it.
In Cincinnati. We go to ashelter and so we cooked and I'm the

(17:55):
headshelf. We cooked for like fouror five hundred people and just you know,
try to bless them on a goodand hope that you know, people
get they set back on track. You know, if you're trying to a
lot of people who in these shelterstuff, they not trying to change,
you know, some people are.So we're just trying to get the ones
who want to change and do betterand get like get life to you know,
we booth and start all over them. Yeah. No, that's uh,

(18:17):
that's admirable work. Well, uhso you have you'll have a busy
card here in Cincinnati because hopefully youcan be involved in some of that helps
out folks who need it here inCincinnati. Big for I make sure I
make sure you know, the BigThree we come in and they do a
lot of stuff in the community. But I do that for my foundation.
I would find someone probably that Fridayand then you know whatever, just tell

(18:38):
them I will come by and showsome love and you know, cook for
you know, cook for lunch oryou know lunch of breakfast for you know,
some of the people and just hangout with them. That's what I
do. Yeah, No, thatsounds awesome. And then uh, we'll
go to the music fast, we'llsee new addition, and then we'll just
see where the night takes us.Because you're just coaching the next day,
you can stay up late, right, Yeah, we can hang out.

(19:02):
I mean all we got to dois practice. All we do is practice
is maybe for like thirty minutes aday before I mean that's Saturday. And
then after that at the seven o'clocksaid that we own dog hang out.
I'm in all right. Uh,we're I'm gonna make this. I'm gonna
make this happen. The Big Threeis coming to Heritage Bank Center. Tickets
are on sale right now Big threedot com. Uh. There are very

(19:23):
few people in my career that I'vesaid, God, I would love to
somehow have them on the air,and you've been on that short list.
I can't thank you enough for doingthis. I'll be honest with you.
I could have captured at six o'clock, but you have better things to do.
Uh, we can't wait to haveyou here in Cincinnati. Thank you
very much for doing this. Ido appreciate it. Charles, thank you.
No problems. And you know Icame out with a book last So

(19:45):
I'm gonna do something in the communitywhen I'm coming, just as you know,
were gonna get together. Let's dothis and let's have fun. Okay,
I'm in. Big three is coming. Yes, Big Three will be
in town. The Big Three willbe in town. Charles Oakley will be

Charles Oakley said, I don't careabout New Edition. I mean, I
know you do. And it'd becool to meet those guys. Charles Oakley

(20:29):

don't know Bull. Yeah, i'dgo see Pitbull with Charles Oakley yes,
yes, all right, we're gonnahold him to that. Charles Oakley will
be here along with the Big Three, which is starting their season. You
