(00:00):
Kind of a busy sports weekend.Tomorrow it's the spring game, second annual
UC Spring game, and by secondannual, I mean second one with Scott
Saderfield as the head coach. Completecoverage available at Bearcat journal dot com,
of which Chad Brendle is the proprietorand he's with us. Now what is
going on? The proprietor? Ilike that. I'm gonna I'm gonna start

(00:21):
calling myself the proprietor a lot more. Okay, you could, it's all
yours. It sounds important, itsounds big, exactly owner. Anybody can
be an owner of anything, rietorhow many? How many proprietors are out
there? Not that many, butI'm talking to one right now, right
before we do the spring game.Uh. You know, I like you

(00:42):
were there last night. I went, and you know, folks have asked
me, how was it? Whatwas it like? When you get those
questions, what do you say?Well, one, I think they got
really lucky because I don't think thatevent would have been as memorable outside in
an open air, forty thousand seatstadium. I think it was absolutely perfect

(01:07):
inside said third arena. The soundwas great, everybody was you know,
very close to the action. Jasonand Travis are just so good at that,
and I thought it was a greattime. I thought it was a
really really well done event. Yeah, no, I would. My very
first impression I got there a littlebit before eight o'clock was immediately, this

(01:30):
is awesome. This would not havebeen anywhere close to as awesome had it
been outside, even if the weatherhad been perfect. So yeah, I
do think they stumbled onto something. The spring game, though, will be
outside. What should I be watchingfor tomorrow, Brendan Sowersby, I mean,
this is you know, a greatchance, great first impression for what

(01:53):
we all anticipate will be Cincinnati's startingquarterback. And if he doesn't have a
great day, it like the endof the world. No, because he's
had a really really good spring,in a really consistent spring. But you
know, of those fourteen practices,I have seen them, most people have
it, pretty much nobody has,so their impressions are going to come from

(02:16):
what he looks like in this firstlike live action experience with fans in attendance.
So you know, I think that'sgoing to be storyline number one,
storyline number two, And you know, for the the football junkies, probably
more important. Can they get thisdefense back on track? It was bad

(02:38):
last year, it was really reallybad, and they've added a lot of
really good new pieces. I think. I think they they look more the
part of a Big twelve defense thanthey did last year. They're longer,
they're more athletic, They've got alot more experience back there with the additions
from the transfer portal. But weneed to see it on the field and

(03:00):
what it looks like against, youknow, an opposing offense, even though
it's their own opposing offense. Butyeah, I just I think that that
those two things are going to bethe what we're writing about and talking about
come Saturday evening. Do you feelgood based on just what you've seen during

(03:22):
spring ball? And things can change, But do you feel good about them,
specifically on defense being able to riseto the level of physicality needed in
the Big Twelve. I don't fullyknow yet, you know. I think
one of the things that really doomedthem last year was was the inability to
get after the quarterback, especially fromthe edge positions on the defensive line.

(03:47):
I want to see more of that. I want to see can these guys
you know, to be disrupted inthe backfield they had for them for a
while. Last year they had areally good run defense, but their past
defense was the only way I coulddescribe their past defense is I bet my
egger through a lot of pens.Correct. Uh. So you know that's

(04:15):
kind of the double edged sword hereright mode. Because if Brandon Soresby goes
out throws a bunch of touchdown passesand then a ton of yards, we're
gonna be really impressed with Brandon Soresby. But when when you and I talk
again on air, we're gonna belike, oh, boy, like that
past event didn't look a whole lotbetter than it did last year. So
you know, it's six of one, half dozen of the other, depending

(04:38):
on how you look at it.But I do think they look like I
said, they look the part more. They look longer and more athletic and
you know, more physical. Butnow we need to see, like how
does it translate? And and theone thing I do like is the beginning
of the spring, we saw alot of big plays, not to be

(05:00):
unexpected, new defensive coordinator, abunch of new players, especially in the
secondary. But they got better asthe spring went along, and you saw
less of those days where there wasyou know, four or five six splash
plays. That was the thing thatkilled them last year is you know,
teams new, guess what if it'sthird and five, third and seven,

(05:23):
We're just gonna throw it over thetop and this team's either gonna fail to
cover or they're gonna get a passan interference call, and we're going to
move the sticks and there needs tobe a lot less of that. This
will be the first visual evidence wehave of can they do better in that
area? Give me an idea ofone or two things, and if Soresby's

(05:46):
an upgrade, you know the answeris going to be we'll just throw the
football, but give me one ortwo things. They'll be able to do
significantly better on offense this year comparedto what we saw last season. The
first and foremost I think is isvery clear when you watch practice they are
going to be much more effective bothover the middle and in like the screen

(06:09):
swing, you know, short passinggame and using that as a as an
extension of the running game. Theyjust didn't they didn't and couldn't throw the
ball over the middle last year, and once teams figured that out, I
mean you're dead. If they knowthe middle of the field is just not

(06:30):
an option for your offense. JoeRoyer has had an outstanding spring, and
you know he looks like a guythat can be a difference maker at tight
end, and that I think youknow, when you get into those third
and medium, third and short situations, teams can't just know ten your ears

(06:54):
back get up the field. They'reeither going to run the ball or they're
going to throw it in complete somewhere. So that I think is the first
thing offensively that you're going to lookfor the other thing, and it's a
little bit more difficult to tell becauseLuke Candra and D'artannian Tinsley have missed most

(07:15):
of the spring. It's nothing major. Candra actually has been back. He
had a minor surgery after the season. He's been back limited in practice,
but has been back on the fieldas we've gotten towards the end of the
spring. The second thing is goingto be protecting the quarterback. If they

(07:38):
can't improve there and they can't bebetter there, then you know this offense
is still going to have problems. They have done a much better job keeping
a pocket, especially from the twotackle positions this spring than we saw,
you know, for most of lastyear, and you know that's one of
the things that Emma Jones not havea good year. We you know,

(07:59):
that's just the reality of the situation. But some of it wasn't his fault
because he would take a snap andwithin one second had to make a decision
to get murdered or run for hislife. That can't be the case this
year. So you want to seethat quarterback upright in the pocket, especially
if you have a guy that's goingto deliver the ball over the middle,

(08:22):
gonna throw some of the out routesand some of the things you can do
with the guy that has the armtalent of Soresby, you got to give
him time. And they've had moretime in the pocket this spring than they
did last year. So if thatcontinues, that makes this offense a lot
more dangerous. We know a ScottSatterfield offense is going to run the ball
and run the ball effectively with theiroutside zone scheme. It can't be the

(08:46):
only thing that you do offensively,no question. Really quick obviously departures will
impact this, but the portal isgoing to reopen based on what we know
now, what will they be shoppingfor. You're always looking for big guys.
You're always looking for help on thedefensive line, You're always looking for
help on the offensive line. Ithink they'd like to maybe find another starting

(09:13):
level corner. I think the cornerplay has been significantly improved so far this
spring, but I think you coulduse more bodies in that room. So
I think those that area specifically interms of skill. And then you know,
you're always looking to find big guys. You're always looking to find bodies

(09:33):
that can help you in the trenches. So I think those three spots will
be necessary. And let's be honest, you're gonna have a situation where you're
not gonna have Dante Corleone probably nextyear, so it would behoove you to
start making sure you have a replacementfor when he's not around. I got

(09:54):
like thirty seconds here, you gotany basketball news. Connor Hickman, the
guard from that we got a viewof in the n IT, we'll be
visiting next week and as long ashe doesn't commit to Rick Patino and Saint
John's this weekend, I think tothe West former West Virginia, former Arizona

(10:24):
guard coming up next week as well. All right, Kirk criesy, Yeah,
you cut out there, all right. Awesome stuff, man, Thank
you so much. Have a greatweekend all right, thanks a Boll.
