Anthony, I am going to dothat. Good afternoon. I'm Moleger.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thankyou for listening. First of all,
hopefully you're having an unbelievable Wednesday afternoon. Secondly, we have an entire show
preview up and available to you onx slash Twitter, thanks to our friends
at Emory Federal Credit Union, yourcredit union with Hart since nineteen thirty nine.

(00:24):
Go to EMORYFCU dot org. Checkthat out and you can see everything
we have coming up this afternoon. We will be monitoring what's happening in Seattle
Reds and Mariners coming up in justabout an hour. Cincinnati went to Seattle
with a full head of steam aftersweeping a really bad Chicago White Sox team,
and then the last couple of nights, well it's been the exact opposite.

(00:46):
Now they're simply hoping to avoid gettingswept. If they can win today,
it's a winning road trip. Whowouldn't sign up for that? Andrew
Abbott scheduled to pitch today for Cincinnati. We'll get to the Reds coming up
here in just a second. We'regiving away more Arrow Smith tickets at four
thirty three. If if you're astudent of Bengals draft history and speaking of

(01:07):
the Bengals in the draft are BuddyJoe Goodberry is going to join us at
three forty five NFL Draft analyst, host of Bengals on the Brain, and
I love having Joe in the show. He is going to join us to
go through some Bengals draft possibilities comingup at three forty five. I'm going
to help you understand if you don'tthe Hunter Green contract in just a bit.

(01:30):
Last night's game. Last night's gamewas tough because it was kind of
there for the taking. Now,look, everything gets magnified when you only
score one run. Your starting pitchingperformance gets magnified when you only score one
run. What your bullpen does anddoesn't do, what your team's defense does
and doesn't do. That stuff getsmagnified when you only score one run.

(01:55):
Last night. The Reds for thefor the most part, pretty dormant on
offense. But I know I saythis a lot. This is a small
margin for error team. They havea chance to be pretty good this year.
They're gonna have to be good atnot shrinking their margin for air.
They don't have in all likelihood thesort of team that could slug themselves out

(02:17):
of trouble, or they don't havegood enough starting pitching that it's gonna consistently
be able to overcome whatever the defensecan't do, or whatever the offense isn't
able to accomplish. That their marginfor error because of the inexperience, because
of whatever flaws there are with theroster, their margin for error is really

(02:39):
small. Last night, they shrunkit. They shrunk it even further.
You shrink it by well giving awayouts on the basis that happened twice last
night. Jake Freeley, Elie dela Cruz will get to Ellie specifically here
in just a second. They shrunkit with all the walks. We're gonna
focus on Hunter Green, but youknow the reality is seven walks and a

(02:59):
hit bat not enough. They shrunkit by not making a play they need
to at the plate. On thefirst run of the game, Luke Maley
has a chance to cut down arunner. It's a good throw from Elie
de la Cruz. Luke, who'sa good defensive catcher, drops the ball.
Maybe not the easiest play to make, but a play that you should
make and that you have to makeif you don't want to shrink your already

(03:21):
small margin for air games like that. I don't want to say they have
to win. I don't want tosay they have to win them all,
because that's not true. But youknow, there are certain games that you
go, God, you know what, that was there for the taking.
If one or two other things wouldhave gone differently, felt that way,
different felt differently, I should sayon Monday night, Monday Night, that
ballgame felt like it was over inthe third inning. Frankie Montas just not

(03:44):
effective. They dig themselves a fiveto one hole, scratched and clawed to
make it a game ish, Butthe reality is it felt like a five
to one that bad boy was over. Hunter Green pitch last night. We
talked about this pretty extensive yesterday HunterGreen last night, going into that game,
I said on this show he couldhave thrown seven innings of two hit,

(04:10):
one run baseball and struck out twelve, and that would have been really
cool. I think all of uswould have been unsurprised. He could have
last night pitched three and a third, given up seven runs, surrendered to
gopher balls, walk some guys, and his final line would have been not
good, but also unsurprising. Hemade last night his fiftieth career major league

(04:34):
start. We're fifty starts in andon a start to start basis, you
still don't know what you're gonna get. Sometimes one good start is followed up
by a clunker, sometimes within thesame game. You see some moments of
brilliance that happened last night, butit's offset by these frustrating moments, these

(04:58):
frustrating at bats, these frustrations thatpop up throughout the course of the start.
You could attribute them to youth andinexperience if you want whatever it is.
Last night was sort of Hunter Green'scareer in a nutshell point. There's
a lot of potential, and hemade some big time pitches to strike out
the last batter of both the thirdand fourth inning, and he minimized the

(05:23):
damage. You could say it wasn'ta very good start. You could talk
about him working way too many threeball counts, you could talk about the
walks, whatever. At the endof the day, it's not like when
Hunter Green left the mound at theend of the fourth inning and by the
way, looked like he was beggingDavid Bell to stay in the ballgame.
When he was done thereat still hada chance to win the game. On

(05:44):
one level, Yeah, you couldsay Hunter Green kind of did his job,
but he still just takes way toofew innings to throw way too many
pitches. Ninety eight pitches through fourinnings last night. Now, the Rats
have been better this year at gettinglength out of their starters. Last season,

(06:06):
the average start length four point nineinnings, which means, on average,
the red starting pitcher last season didn'tget through five didn't get fifteen outs.
This year it's about five and athird better than league average. They've
been better at that. They've alsobeen better this season last two games,
notwithstanding at not giving up a bunchof walks. But still they're going to

(06:30):
need length. They're going to needreliability. They're going to need better control.
They're going to need better pitch efficiencyfrom Hunter Green. They got some
good stuff. Hunter made pitches thatkept his team in the game. Even
on a night where the Mariners werevery patient with him. He didn't have
tip top control. He struggled withcommand, looked like he talked about it

(06:51):
after the game, struggling with thegrip of the baseball and the cold weather.
And still he gave up just onerun and the run that he gave
up could have been. He alsogot out of trouble, struck out the
last hitter in the second, third, and fourth. He was really impressive
striking at the last hitter at theend of both the third and the fourth.
But at the end of the day, Hunter Green will have arrived and

(07:14):
Hunter Green will be giving us whatwe have been waiting for him to give
when he is consistently getting through sixor yes, even in this day and
age seven innings, he had noprayer of doing that last night. The
other moment in the game that sortof stood out. I love how the
Reds play. I love their aggressivenature on the bases. I love the

(07:36):
fact that they force the other teamto make a play. They put pressure
on defenses. I love the factthat they have built a team that is
capable of taking advantage of some ofthe rule changes, like the limited pitching
disengagements, which promotes stolen bases, and the Reds have stolen a bunch.
I love the fact that they usetheir fast guys to force the issue.

(08:00):
Last night, Ellie de la Cruzgets thrown out at third to end the
seventh inning. He was thrown outwith Jake Frayley also on base. The
out that Elliet recorded at third basecame before Jake Frayley crossed the plate,
which negated his run. In realtime, it sort of felt like,
yeah, Jake scored, Ellie's beenthrown out. As it turns out,

(08:20):
no, and so instead of beingthree to two with the tying run on
base either second or third, theinning is over and the Reds are still
down two runs. Obviously, theystill had six outs to play with.
Here is a David Bell after thegame on that play. Here, if
we were talking about I'm here mortalhuman, Eli, are you okay with

(08:43):
him running first to third? Thenyeah, I you know, that's why
Rendering is some one of the bestplayers in the day. And I mean
it was a little bit on hisheels in some ways. We thought it
was an ill advice throw, tobe honest, because of the LA's running
and he's just so fast, Sofor him to be able to throw Ellie

(09:05):
out there was a bit of surpriseto us. Yeah, we have to
continue to play our continue to run. Take the extra bass a big part
of our game. When teams makeplays like that, we can't let that
stop us. So I think thatwhole play was about Rodriguez and a really
special throw. Yeah, I couldn'tagree more. Julio Rodriguez was unbelievable with

(09:28):
the glove last night, and hemakes a great play that that really should
have been. The big takeaway fromthe play itself is what a throw,
What a play by a great playerin Julio Rodriguez. The adage is never
make the first or third out atthird base, and I get it,
and I don't necessarily disagree with thatadage. And that adage is amplified when

(09:52):
you're losing and when you're late inthe ballgame. And the Reds were losing
and it was the top of theseventh inning last night, so you're in
the later innings. And there isa line between aggressiveness and stupidity, and
I think it kind of got crossedlast night. But first of all,
you do have to acknowledge Julio Rodriguezmakes a great play. I don't think

(10:16):
most outfielders make that play. Secondly, I think this is kind of what
you have to live with, andI'm willing to live with it. You
can't you can't demand that this teamplay aggressive and takes advantage of their speed
and forces the issue and tries tomake the other team's defense make a play,
and then when the other team's defensemakes a play, lose your mind.

(10:39):
I didn't like it, and again, yeah, I even put on
social media. It did sort ofcross over into stupidity because there are two
outs because you are losing, becauseyou don't want to not score that run
that should have crossed the plate beforeEllie got thrown out at third base.
At the same time, if you'relike me, you do sort of shrug

(11:00):
your shoulders and go, this isthis is what you get. This comes
with the territory. These guys aregonna run, and they're gonna run it
will and they're really gonna run whenthey've got the fastest man in baseball on
the bass paths, and so there'spart of that that, as much as
you might hate it in real time, you kind of just have to put
up with. Unfortunately, it camein a big situation in the game the

(11:22):
Reds lost last night, seventeen minutesafter three o'clock. Our phone numbers are
five point three, seven four nine, fifteen thirty eight six six seven oh
two three seven seven six. Getyou in as well. Joe Goodbarry coming
up in just about twenty five minuteson the Bengals and the Draft. We
also have to talk about this idiot, uh who's been banned for life by
the NBA, John tay Porter forgambling. UH. Some thoughts on that.

(11:46):
We're giving away Aerosmith tickets at fourthirty three. By the way,
we'll take your tweets at moager thanksto our friends at Delta Dental. Delta
Dental is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for all. Good to Delta
Dental, Oh dot com. Ican be critical of Hunter Green, I'm
also really hopeful, really hopeful forthe kind of picture that Hunter Green is

(12:07):
going to become. I still haveabsolutely no issue with the contract the Red
signed him to. I think alot of people kind of misunderstand it.
I'm here to help. I'll help. Next on ESPN fifteen thirty Rads are
playing the Mariners today with Stuart Fairschildbatting third. If you want to watch
the game, Tony Pike will beat the Twin Peaks in Westchester starting at

(12:28):
four o'clock. Go hang out withhim. If you missed yesterday show,
we had some good stuff, includingChad brendle on Arrington page and Connor Hickman
transferring to the University of Cincinnati. You can find that and so much more
for free on the iHeartRadio app, also on the podcast page of ESPN fifteen
thirty dot com. I get afew bearcat thoughts coming up in just a

(12:50):
bit. The Hunter Green thing likea hundred signed a contract that stood out
because of the dollar figures. Right, this happened prior to last season,
and so when he pitches poorly orwhen he doesn't pitch as well as many
would hope, you get folks whobring up how much money he's being paid,

(13:13):
and I can't believe they paid inthat money and he hasn't earned it
yet. And I'm I'm gonna I'mgonna try. I'm gonna try to help
folks understand. Maybe I'm helping youunderstand. First of all, Hunter Green,
when he was under when he signedthat contract, was under team control
for quite a number of years formore including this one. What the Reds

(13:37):
did is they extended that team controlfor at least one more year, with
a team option for another if hegets to twenty twenty nine, which would
be the team option year that contractwill still be worth less than one hundred
million dollars, less than one hundredmillion dollars. And that's if he gets

(13:58):
to the end of the deal. Now you might go, well, wait
a minute, if if he wasunder team control, why do they have
to guarantee his salary? Well, because I think what they're betting on is
Hunter getting to a point where heends up being an amazing bargain because his

(14:18):
salary is guaranteed, and yet he'ssuch a good pitcher, He's an elite
pitcher that he's going to prove tobe quite a bargain. This season,
Hunter Green is the one hundred andsecond highest paid pitcher in baseball. Is
he the one hundred and second bestpitcher in baseball? I have no idea.
I haven't ranked him, but hissalary this year. He is the

(14:43):
one hundred and second highest paid pitcherin the game this year, this year's
salary, I might be going,wait a minute, now, he's he's
gonna make more money next year.Yes, if you were to take Hunter
green salary next season and hold itup against twenty twenty four salaries, Hunter

(15:05):
Green, the money he's due tomake next season would make him the seventy
ninth highest paid pitcher in the sport. Seventy ninth. This year, Hunter
Green is making roughly three million bucks. I think it's adjusted to three point
three mil. Next season, thatnumber goes up to six. Right now,

(15:30):
Hunter Green is scheduled to be theseventy ninth highest paid pitcher in baseball
in twenty twenty five. In twentytwenty six, he's due to eight He's
due to make eight million dollars thisseason. Eight million dollars would make Hunter
Green the sixty eighth highest paid pitcherin baseball. His twenty twenty seven salary

(15:54):
fifteen mil, would make him thisyear the thirty second highest paid pitcher in
base His twenty twenty eight salary, which is the last year of him making
guaranteed money, is just over sixteenmillion bucks. Hunter Green's twenty twenty eight
salary this year This year would notmake him one of the twenty nine highest

(16:18):
paid pitchers in the sport. Sohis salary is guaranteed. Like, we
know what he is going to make. You can't say that about pretty much
anybody else on the team, withthe exception of Jonathan India. We know
what his money is going to benext year. None of these other guys,
the pre arbed guys, the guyswho are are arbitration eligible Tyler Stevenson,
no idea what they're going to bemaking. We know what Hunter's going

(16:40):
to be making. Relative to histalent. He still might end up being
one of the best bargains in thesport. Now you go, well,
wait a minute, it's still potential, it's still talent. He's made fifty
starts. Let's see what happens overthe next fifty. But they made a
wager that at some point point overthe next few years, this guy is

(17:02):
gonna round himself into one of themost reliable, one of the best starting
pitchers in the game. And ifhe does, he's gonna represent one of
the great bargains in the sport.Even if he ends up not being elite.
Let's say Hunter Green ends up beinga middle of the rotation guy.
Well, for many years of thiscontract, guess what, he'll kind of

(17:23):
be paid almost like a middle ofthe rotation guy. This contract is insanely
sensible for Hunter. He gets somedegree of financial security, he still has
a chance to hit free agency beforehe turns thirty years old. There's a
club option for twenty twenty nine, worth twenty one mill. We'll see if
they pick that up years from now, But for now, this year,

(17:45):
Hunter Green makes three million dollars. He's not among the top one hundred highest
paid pitchers in the sport using twentytwenty four numbers. He'll never be one
of the twenty nine highest paid pitchersin the sport while under the guaranteed years

(18:06):
of this contract. Hell yeah, the Reds did the right thing by signing
him to that. I would dothis every single time. He's either going
to be an insane bargain or he'sgonna be paid commensurate to what he is.
This obviously doesn't count him suffering somesort of catastrophic injury. If you

(18:26):
believe as I do, that talentis always worth betting on. The Reds
bet on the talent here. Theybet on the talent to end up being
so good that it makes them looklike geniuses for Hunter Green being a bargain.
Even if that doesn't happen, he'sstill not really going to be overpaid.
The contract when they offered it toHunter Green made sense then, it

(18:48):
makes sense now it makes sense forHunter It makes sense for the Reds.
I mean if in twenty twenty six, when he's twenty six years old,
Hunter Green's the top of the rotationguy, He's going to be making less
than ten million dollars. And bythe way, that will be his second
arbitration year. So imagine if thishappens, and I still think there's a

(19:14):
good chance, Imagine if this happens, what kind of coin he would get
an arbitration It would be worth morethan eight million dollars. Eight million dollars
in twenty twenty four per year wouldmake Hunter Green the sixty eighth highest paid
pitcher in the game. That wasone of the most sound financial decisions the

(19:36):
Reds have ever made. Sports headlinesand uh, we gotta get to our

Next Sports Grill. It has beenreally nice out the last few nights,
warm weather, nice night to sitoutside long neck sports grill. Each location
has a great patio, got aTV for the ballgame, and so much
more. You know, one morething here quickly on Hunter Green. And
I will admit this is sort ofa made up mile post, but I

(21:33):
remember years ago having a conversation witha former big league pitcher and we were
not talking about Hunter Green, butwe were talking about young pitching prospects.
And you know, his message tome was those first fifty starts, ignore
the numbers. Ignore you should alwaysignore wins and losses, ignore the era,

(21:53):
ignore the batting average against. Startto really focus in on those things
right around start number fifty one, because at that point, you know,
a big league pitcher is essentially kindof in the second part of his second
season, second half of his secondseason to a degree. That's where Hunter
Green is slowed down a little bitbecause of the injuries. Last night was

(22:15):
his fiftieth start. What I amreally curious about is to see now how
the experience gathered in those first fiftystarts begins to pay off and reflected by
obvious improvement that we see over thenext fifty starts. We'll see we'll also

(22:36):
see what the Bengals do. Aweek from tomorrow, NFL Draft underway.
Joe Goodberry. This is his favoritetime of year. He's one of our
favorite guests. He'll join us nextyours getting closer and closer to the NFL
Draft, which is a week fromtomorrow night. Don't forget we're broadcasting from
Long Necks and Wilder three to sixnext Thursday afternoon. Joe Goodberry one of

(22:57):
the absolute must follows and must watches. His Bengals on The Brain Show with
Joe Goodberry is available on YouTube. He's a terrific Twitter follow as well,
and always kind enough to join uswhenever we reach out. It's it's good
to have you. If if thenumber, if the first seventeen picks overall
go according to plan, who's theguy want at eighteen? So I'm assuming

(23:22):
black Bowers is off the board. That would be a Bengals fan would be
pretty happy to add another weapon ofJoe Burrows Arsenal. I think the next
one would be Olafashano, the lefttackle from Penn State who looks like a
future Pro Bowl pass protecting tackle.Could he play right tackle? Maybe maybe
develop him for a couple of yearsand move them over left. When Orlando
Brown Junior is gone, I expecthe's probably gone. He's fourteenth on the

(23:45):
consensus rankings amongst everyone, all theanalysts and in the internet world, so
there's a chance there, but youknow, expecting me to be gone.
The next, in my opinion, are Talifwanga, the offensive tackle from Oregon
State who's a right tackle by trade. He's played at his whole career.
Would be a great fit. Powerrunner, all run blocker, can move

(24:07):
and get to the second level, can block linebackers. Can You can pull
him on pitches and get him outin space and block. He's a nasty
dude. He's not an eight pluspass protector like Fashan who is. He's
more of like a D pass protectorand an A plus run run blocker.
I think he'd be a seamless fitin a transition there. Some teams see
him as a guard, so youcould probably come in and play and start
over court a Wolston out left guardand give you five starters. If not,

(24:32):
I do think there is a realgood shot for defensive tackle, and
the one that everyone seems to bethe highest on is Byron Murphy at the
defensive tackle out of Texas play nosetackle at Texas. He's more of the
body of a three tech pass rusher, elite athlete, high end production.
You're gonna have to transition him tomore of an NFL role off the center,
but I think he could do alittle bit of it. The Bengals
don't have a nose tackle on theroster. It would just be weird to

(24:56):
have a three hundred and five pounderplay that role. But he's done it
and probably could get on the fieldright away doing that, all right,
So let's say he's there and theytake him, but they still have to
address right tackle. It's interesting. When this process first started, all I
heard about was, boy, it'sa great tackle class. It's really deep.
It feels like it's deep with firstrounders. Is a deep with guys

(25:17):
that you could ask to play thatposition, that you could get on Friday.
So most of the really good tacklescome in the first round. It
is a position that gets pushed up. Every team could use one, or
at least half of them are desperatelyneeding one or a future one, so
they get drafted right away. Soif we see I think the over under
right now is nine and a halffor offensive lineman taken in the first round,

(25:38):
and that's mostly tackles. So ifwe're saying seven or eight of those
guys are tackles, it doesn't leavea lot for round two. So you
have to consider that if you wantto go in a different position in round
one, if it's Rock Powers orwide receiver or a corner, which could
happen, but if that happens, you're making that decision that we are rolling
the dice in round two. Thereare a few guys with incomplete profiles that

(26:00):
look like they may have the upsideand could turn into that. Whether that's
a Patrick Paul out of Houston, but a career left tackle, you'd have
to transition him and his feet, his footwork are a mess anyway, so
you're gonna have to rebuild them asit is. But these are the type
of guys we're talking about. RogerRosengarten, the right tackle from Washington,
the left tackle Troy Platano, whois going to be a first round pick.
Roger rosen Gartner is one of theyounger guys in this class, has

(26:22):
the size, has the athleticism, but he's definitely not Fatano so you see
a step down a little bit there. But hey, I think that's a
great second round roll of the dice. You've got a bunch of guys that
are probably gonna get drafted in thefirst ten picks before they even get to
the Bengals. Whether that's Kingsley,Sua Mattea out of Buyu, Jordan Morgan
out of Arizona, I don't thinkthere's gonna be great options. It's probably

(26:45):
like Paul or rosen Garten, thetwo guys that I mentioned. But they're
gonna need time and they're gonna needsome work. But that's what you're looking
at in round two. The dropoff from Byron Murphy at his position to
everybody else, how's deep? Isit not that crazy? Actually? I
think Johnny Newton is actually a betterprospect, but he didn't test, he
didn't have the hype of the wholeoffseason, and we don't know where he's

(27:08):
going to go now. For whateverreason, it seems like everyone around the
league has cooled on him from beinga top twelve pick when the process started
in January to now he's ranked betweenlike twenty fifth and thirty fifth on most
of the boards around the internet. So if that's where he goes, and
a lot of mocks. I justsaw a mel Kuiper and Field yatesmock kind
of had the Bengals getting Johnny Newtonat forty nine. If that's the case,

(27:30):
then was like an A plus pickin my opinion, I think he
could be Geno Atkins Grady Jarrett typeof defensive tackle. And I don't throw
that comp out, but that's whathe creates for us and all the work
we do. But other than that, they'll realistic options in round two,
whether that's a Braden Fist got aFlorida State who is twenty four, but
he's got the athleticism and the strengthand the power that you look for as

(27:52):
a pass rushing, disruptive, painin the neck type defensive tackle. The
next guy, probably Michael Hall BioState, was more just a pass rusher,
not very good at run defending, and those profiles normally say role player,
and that's probably okay. The Bengalscould use some more interior pass rush,
but if you are looking for guysto defend the run and maybe get

(28:14):
a nose tackle, if that's theyreally needed someone who replaced DJ Reader.
We're talking day three picks only forthat position, but pass rushers. I
do like a couple other Brandon Dorlesfrom Moregan, Chris Jenkins more of a
run defender, but plays the positionof the pass rusher side of the three
tech QUOAR Tech five TECH from Michigan. I do think there's a lot of
options in round two, round three, but the nose tackle spot if you

(28:34):
don't and we don't know where TobandreSweat is if you don't get him,
if that's the third four to fifthround pick, depending on his character issues,
we're talking most of these guys aregoing to be four through seventh round
draft picks. Joe Goodberry Bengals onthe Brain with Joe Goodberry thanks to First
Star Media Group the Ultimate Draft Breakdownthe latest episode, along with a whole

(28:55):
lot of other draft related content.I haven't heard discussions as he is around
any other prospect as they are whenbrock Bauer's name comes up. Where do
you fall on just him as aguy who may or may not fall to
eighteen, and then what the Bengalshould do if he were to actually be
there. Yeah, so I thinkhe's a tremendous prospect. We're talking about

(29:18):
athleticism, youth production, big timeprogram, big Time Games checks every box.
He did not test athletically before theCombine or before the draft, at
the Combine or at his pro day. That is a red flag and his
profile because there are a few positionswhere you need to be sure that these
guys are athletic. Tight end isone of them. Offensive tackle, defensive

(29:41):
end. You want to make surethose guys are athletic. So while we
know he is, like I cansee it on tape. I know he's
athletic, but the testing would havebeen nice to confirm. I suspect he
would have tested like an elite athlete, and he's probably thinking he's going to
go top twelve no matter what.Swee didn't test, it happens. Having
said that his profile is so strongotherwise that he should be a top ten

(30:02):
pick or he's at least a topten player in this class without a doubt.
But when you take a tight endin the first round, you're automatically
not seeing the same type of valueas you would if you took an offensive
tackle or a wide receiver or defensivetackle, because those top guys at those
positions, at the premium positions getpaid so much more than the top tight
end does, like Travis Kelcey atthirteen million per year is the top tight

(30:26):
end. That is a value, and that may be a bonus for the
Bengals when they get to the secondcontract. Right you're not going to have
to pay that guy t Higgins evenlevel twenty two to twenty five million dollars,
so they could see it as aso what, we don't care about
the value right now. We're notworry about it right now. Second contract
would be very easy to sign uprock Powers. But do the Bengals value
tight end the same way the restof the league does the last few drafts

(30:48):
that total us they don't there maybea round or round and a half lower
on these guys than they should be, and they keep missing out and drafting
tight ends. Maybe in overcorrection whenthey overdrafted Drew Samples, whether like WHOA,
maybe our formula might be a littlebit off here, maybe we should
slow down. Well, he mighthave corrected too far. I think this
one is easy for them, andI think it's easy for rest of the
league. He's going to grade extremelyhigh for almost every team in this In

(31:11):
this in the league and in thedraft, and I expect if he's there,
he's the best player available. Itwould probably take top tackle or Byron
Murphy for them to say, youknow what, he's not that far and
away the best player here. We'vegot a top ten grade on Byron Murphy
or a top ten grade on Fuwangaor Ola Fusiana, and we're going to
bypass broct Powers, just like everyoneelse says, all right, two more

(31:34):
uh if if in an ideal worldthey're addressing wide receiver before Friday comes and
goes, who's the guy before Friday? So first three rounds, let's say
here, it's hard for them becauseeveryone's saying it's a really really good offensive
or wide receiver class, just likeoffensive tackle. And I and I think

(31:56):
the way you said it for atackle is true for wide receiver. I
think there's a uh handful of numberones that will go in the top ten.
Right the Marvin Harrison, the LakeNeighbors, and the Roma Dunze.
Those guys are number one wide receivers. After that, there is a lot
of risk in these profiles going forward. Let's say for the Bengals it's different
because they have their number one, they're not worried about it. They can
get a future number two type andan immediate number three types to fill tow

(32:20):
their voids role. I think thatmakes a lot of sense. That opens
up a lot more players for them. But if you're a team like the
Bills and you need a number onenow because you traded aways to find days,
you are in big trouble. AndI could see them being a team
that moves up and goes and tryand get one of these top guys.
But for the Bengals, they havealways drafted receiver very well, but because
they've been very strict in what typeof wide receiver prospects they're willing to draft

(32:45):
and going back since two thousand andthree, I keep a database on all
this stuff to look at what arethey normally draft, where are they normally
looking for, what are the markers? And for wide receiver, they like
young production guys that were big partsof their offense at eighteen nineteen, twenty
years old, and the COVID yearmessed us all up. So these guys
are now making impacts at twenty one, twenty two, coming out in the

(33:07):
draft in twenty three, twenty fouryears old, and it messes all of
what I would normally say they woulddraft because last year Charlie Jones andre Joshabash
were late breakouts. Charlie Jones wastwenty five year old rookie, was a
one percent one percentile breakout age, meaning he didn't start doing it until he
was twenty three in college. It'svery rare and very weird, and the

(33:27):
Bengals drafted him. This is notwhat they normally do, so I think
if they get to round two, round three, the guys that would normally
fit their old profile and not whatthey did last year with the guys like
Troy Franklin, Kean Coleman. Ithink in rounds three it could be Jalen
McMillan, it could be Brendan Rice. Other than that, though, I
think if they try to dip outsideof it and go for these older prospects,

(33:50):
which I'm not sure they'll do,we'll see if they do. They
usually go outside their realm of normalcyon Day three, like they did with
Charlie Jones Andreashobas. If they doit, it'll be odd to me.
So I think those four guys Inamed are the most likely for Day two.
Yeah, that was very well explained. One more. I want you
to go back two years ago becauseI'm I think Dog's Hill and his role

(34:13):
on the team and what unfolds inthe coming months is really really interesting.
Right now, he's kind of aman without a role, and understandably because
his play at safety last year,it left a lot to be desired.
When you were evaluating him in therun up to the draft two years ago,
where did you project him best fittingin the NFL? So he was

(34:34):
in my opinion, and what heplayed at Michigan, in my opinion,
coincide here. So he was aslop box safety. So you can have
a and these are guys that throughoutthe league have been emerging more and more,
whether it's Tyrone Matthew right he wasa slot kind of box strong safety,
or a Buddha Baker or a JimmyWard who was the first round pick,
a Kyle Hamilton's and exact draft forthe for the Ravens, he was

(34:58):
a slop box safety where if hewould have if the Bengals would have been
lucky enough to get Kyla Hamilton, would they have the next year said hey,
we lost Jesse Bates, Let's makeKyle Hamilton a free safety. Because
we need it. Like, thinkabout how bad you would have ruined an
all pro career if you had donethat. They basically did that with Dax
Hill. They said to Daks,Dax, we're not going to play you
much in your rookie year unless someonegoes down and hey, it ended up

(35:19):
being a cornerbacks, hopefully cornerback fora day. Other than that, we're
going to move you to free safetyin year two and not give you much
better in safety help. We're gonnago cheap with Nick Scott and oh that
didn't work. So now Dak's becausethe whole defense looked terrible last year,
we're going to move you to cornerand that's what it seems like it has
happened. It's what I've heard hashappened. He's gonna be in the cornerback

(35:39):
room this year. They've replaced themwith Gino Stone. They were ended up
able to fall and get bond Bellfor freeback. Okay, so the safety
room is better, but you've nowwasted two years of Dax should have been
playing the Mike Hilton role. Sowhy did you draft him? If you
had Mike Hilton, then you hadhim signed for three more years. If

(36:00):
the whole room wasn't in unison thevision from personnel down to the coaches that
this is what he is in collegeand this is what he should play in
the NFL, and you guys alsocollectively thought, no, let's move in
the free safety. Then you shouldhave given him more time and more development
and more effort to make sure he'sthat player. Otherwise you have failed as

(36:21):
an organization, have a concrete planand execute it. Number one and number
two, you burn the first roundpick in an era where you can't afford
to do it. They've really fumbleda bag here. Mo. Yeah,
no, it certainly feels that way. I feel for him. I'm interested
in how this is going to playitself out, and perhaps what happens next
week is going to go a longway toward determining how it does play out.

(36:43):
I always feel so much smarter whenI watch, when I listen when
I have you on. I cannotthank you enough. I hope we can
do it before the season starts.Man, thank you so much. Thanks
for having me. Let's talk afterthe draft so we can review it a
little bit. Most definitely done.Sold will make it happen. Joe,
you're the best Man. Thank you, Thank you, Joe Goodbary Bengals on
the Brain on YouTube thanks to thefirst our media group. We are late

(37:07):
four o'clock ESPN fifteen thirty ESPN fifteenthirty Cincinnati's sports station. What's up?
It's six after four o'clock. Itdid sound like Audie was out of web
there. Yeah, I've been therebefore. Good afternoon. Thank you so
much for joining us. We werebusy this hour. Brennan and Jones on

(37:28):
baseball coming up. Tony Kike isgonna join us. He is right now
as we speak, posted up atTwin Peaks in Westchester, and he is
dying to watch the Reds game withyou. Reds are about to get out
away in Seattle. Plus, wealso have another pair of Aerosmith tickets to
give away at four thirty three thisafternoon, four to thirty three. In
just about twenty five minutes, wehave played goofy little trivia games each of

(37:52):
the last two days. We're gonnado another the Themes excuse me. The
first two days have been baseball. We did some Red's Mariners connections. On
Monday, we did some David Bellstuff yesterday. Today, today we are
going to test your knowledge of Bengals, for the most part, somewhat recent

(38:13):
Bengals draft history. But we're goingto test your knowledge of Bengals draft history
coming up at four thirty three.I cannot wait. I know you cannot
wait either. We also have thisidiot that got himself banned by the NBA
and try to come up with somethingon Jason Kelsey's missing Super Bowl ring as
well. Plus we have some pollquestions we'll have to today that we'll get

(38:37):
to on Twitter in just a fewminutes. One of them is going to
be about positional preference in the draft. And you know, we're to the
point that I've heard about so manydifferent draft prospects that like, I kind
of want them all. I mentionedthe other day in just researching and doing
prep for our draft show next week. You know, you talk to folks

(39:00):
Joe Goodberry and Dan Brugler who wason the show yesterday, many others,
and you print stuff out and youread stuff, and it ends up you
feel like you're sitting at a restaurantthat has a menu with like seven things
that you want and you can onlyorder one. That's how I am with
the first round here. You know, brock Bowers has been brought up a

(39:20):
lot. I'm gonna guess that heis not there at eighteen. We've now
had on back to back draft analystswho love brock Bawers as a prospect if
he were to be drafted by theBengals, just in a vacuum, terrific,
right, Like, wait a minute, I'm getting the best tight end
in this class. A guy withsome very strong physical attributes, a guy

(39:45):
who's gonna walk into an offense thatis already very difficult to prepare for when
everybody's healthy, and he's gonna playwith a quarterback and Joe Burrow, who
has gotten good production from tight endswho aren't nearly as talented, like awesome.
Or let's say it's Byron Murphy.Uh, now you heard Joe.
He likes Johnny Newton Moore as aprospect than Byron Murphy. But if Byron

(40:07):
Murphy's there at eighteen, a guythat many believe is the best defensive tackle
in this class, wait a minute. Okay, So I got to play
Derrick Henry, and I got toplay Nick Chubb, and I gotta make
sure the Steelers don't beat me intothe ground. I got to be better
against the run. I've got tobe better upfront. My overall defensive line
play has to improve. How doyou argue with that? And then if

(40:30):
we make it about just three positions, and I know some are going to
talk about possible first round wide receiversand maybe that's where they go, or
some are going to talk about possiblefirst round corners, and there's maybe something
that can be said about that. But I feel like the three positions that
the two positions that people have focusedon the most have been in the trenches

(40:50):
defensive tackle, offensive tackle. Andthen you know, Brock Bauers kind of
gets thrown into the mix as abit of a wildcard. Get the best
tackle in this class at eighteen doesn'tfeel like it. Can they get a
guy who has a chance to bein the short term somebody who could just
help and in the long term canprove to be a better player than Jonah

(41:12):
Williams. Sure, I'm getting afirst round talented tackle to help protect Joe
Burrow. Who on Earth that caresremotely about the health of this team literally
and figuratively would have any issue withthat. I think though, that if
we were about to make it aboutpositions, not so much the individual players,

(41:37):
but just positional preference. Not bestplayer available, but just positional preference.
If you're telling me I could havethe best tight end in the draft,
or the best defensive tackle in thedraft, or one of the best
tackles in the draft offensive tackles inthe draft, I think I'm taking the

(41:59):
offensive tackle. I'm not gonna balkat any of those. Again, if
Bira Murphy ends up being a Bengallike great, focus on who they got
and not who they didn't take,at least in the short term. And
if brock Powers were to be thereat eighteen and you could take him,
I get it, man, it'sgiving Joe Burrow another weapon. It's making

(42:19):
this defense already more difficult to preparefor. But number one, I think
we're to the point just because ofwhat they already have that it's fair to
prioritize wanting to protect Joe Burrow asbest as possible. I think we've kind
of moved on from the you knowwhat, just make the offensive line better
and then you know, uh,we'll figure it out later. Well later

(42:44):
is getting here, man, likelater is getting here. I think there's
something about positional value that really mattershere. Also, Austin was talking about
this last week, the infatuation thata lot of people have with tight end.
Right. I was joking that twentyyears ago when the Bengals got cooking
on offense with Chad Johnson and TJ. Hushman Zada and Rudy Johnson and for

(43:07):
about five minutes Chris Perry and CarsonPalmer was starting to peak. I'd listen
to the postgame show and still hearfolks who wanted the Bengals to use the
tight end more, and like Iwould hear that and go like why,
Like, use the tight end more? But the position has grown in in
terms of how it's used, howit's deployed. I think it's also grown

(43:32):
in profile. And I've been thinkingabout this a lot because of some of
the louder personalities who have played theposition. Like if you were to think
of the NFL over the last tenyears, you know you're always going to
start the conversation with quarterbacks. We'vehad some transcendent quarterbacks, but you know,
oftentimes, whether it's right or not, the biggest personalities often get the

(43:59):
most attention, especially if the biggestpersonalities belong to players who are really,
really good. And I can't helpbut wonder if the high profile nature of
Travis Kelcey and the high profile natureof Rob Gronkowski, just these big characters,
lots of commercials TV making movies likebig branded people, if that has

(44:25):
perhaps to a degree, either inflatedthe importance of the position or inflated the
demand to get somebody who plays theposition like those players, because you think
you're gonna be getting players like thoseplayers, if that makes sense again,
like you want to be good atevery possible position. I've said often since

(44:50):
the end of last season, Iwill always wonder how the twenty twenty three
offense could have looked had the Bengalstaken Sam Laporta instead of Miles Murphy.
And if if you gave me brockBowers, then all right, fine,
let's figure out a way to makeit work. But I do wonder if
those two players, in particular theirteam success for individual success. Both guys
are going to get to Canton ifwhat they've done statistically, but as much

(45:14):
as anything, if the personalities theyhave become have fed the tight end conversation
or fed the almost infatuation that alot of people have with with tight end.
I don't know that I have theanswer, but I can't help,
but wonder I just I do feellike though, if you're making it about
the position, and that's not whatteams really do, it's not what teams

(45:36):
really should do. But if you'rejust making it about the position, a
lot of folks are going to talkabout you know, if it's Byron Murphy,
they're not going to talk about himso much as well, here's what
a guy at that position with hissize can do. And if it's brock
Bowers, it's not going to bebrock Bowers as much as it is Well,
here's a chess piece at tight endthey didn't have, and here's what
they're going to be able to donow. And those conversations are really interesting

(45:59):
to have. But if we dothat with a first round right tackle and
we start talking about, well, they have a better chance of keeping Joe
Burrow, who has limped off thefield in his final game of the season
in three of the four NFL seasonsthat he's played. I value that more.

(46:20):
I value the protection, I valuethe ability. I've talked about this
a lot, but I value theability to start building for the future an
elite offensive line that I can onlybuild via the draft and not so much
in free agency. Like I justI think people who can protect the quarterback
are more valuable, especially when you'vegot some of the other pieces in place

(46:42):
like the Bengals have on offense. So I'm open minded anything they do.
I've listened to every conceivable person, weigh in on some of the guys like
Brock Bowers and like Byron Murphy, but I still look at this collection of
tackles and just go I value andprioritize keeping Joe Burrow up right now,

(47:04):
that's been something we've been willing tokind of compromise in an effort to give
him weapons and provide explosiveness and makethem more difficult to defend and add players
on defense. But now I wantI want things to shift to that being
a slightly bigger priority, which makesto me at least that position a lot
more valuable and a lot more desirablethan any of the other two we've been

(47:25):
talking about. Sixteen minutes after fouro'clock five point three seven four nine fifteen
thirty is our phone number. Eightsixty six seven oh two three seven seven
six works as well. We're gonnabe given away Aerosmith tickets in just about
fifteen minutes. Tony Pike is isgonna check in. I'm looking forward to
that, and we got to talkabout this dope who got himself banned by
the NBA. It is seventeen afterfour o'clock on Moegger. Glad you're with

(47:49):
us today on ESPN fifteen thirty,Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
All right, twenty two minutes afterfour o'clock ESPN F thirty on Moeger,
we are ten minutes away from givingaway Aerospith tickets. He's coming to
Heritage Bank Center October the seventeenth, and we we've been give a given ticket.

(48:10):
Its a way, We've been givingtickets away all week long. I'm
flustered almost because, well, it'sa rare treat. Usually this happens happens
during the football season. But it'sa rare treat that we get a chance
on this show to spend some timewith our friend Tony Pike, one half
of since he three to sixty onESPN fifteen thirty. He is at Twin
Peaks in Westchester and he wants towatch the Reds game with you, Tony,

(48:35):
What is going on? Well,no, you want to talk about
a buzz. There was a buzzin this facility when Stuart Fairchild took the
plate, batting number three in thelineup. Now, it didn't go Stuart's
way, and it's first at that, but I don't recall a buzz quite
like this room. When Stuart Fairchildtook the plate in the top of the

(48:55):
first well, I can understand. And for what it's worth, he he
flew out to a shallow center field. I think the second baseman went back
and caught the ball. But thegood news is he gets more than one
at bat. Yes, Stuart Fairchildis batting third, but you know who
knows. It's even more of areason to go out to Twin Peaks in
Westchester and watch the game with Tonybecause you might see Stuart Fairchild make history.

(49:17):
Well you might see that. I'vealready had the meatball skillet, which
you're if you're a fan of theTony and Both Football Show, you know
that's frequented on the menu. Thedrinks are cold. The Red Game is
being played throughout Twin Peaks right herein Westchester. I'm here till six,
and another positive mo Andrew Abbitt madeit out of the first inning without throwing

(49:39):
forty five pitches. So we arewell ahead of schedule today. Reds Baseball,
Red Day Baseball in Seattle, tryingto avoid a sweep. Very good,
And you're there till six. Nowthe game is not going to be
over at six. So if somebodywere to get their clothes to six o'clock,
could they coach you into staying?Absolutely? Absolutely? Wow, very

(50:00):
good, especially if they like boughtyou a beverage. Well, now,
yes, I didn't want to sayit, but if you're saying it,
yes, absolutely, I can bepersuaded into hanging around a little bit longer.
Okay, very good. We'll gosee Tony Pike at the Twin Peaks
in Westchester by a beer and he'llwatch the entire Reds game with you.
When is the next time we chatwith you? I would I would say

(50:22):
in just a couple of minutes.Wow, I believe four forty five somewhere
around there, but I would.I would also recommend if you listen to
the Tony and Moo Football Show ifyou're coming north to get the Twin Peaks,
it's no right turn on red.So don't hank at the person in
front of you, be patient, and when the light turns green, you'll

(50:43):
be inside Twin Peaks here in Westchesterwithin a minute. Did you get the
Union Center Boulevard exit right? Turnon red? Honk. I was honked
at, and I know you're oftenhonked at, So that made me want
to create another public service announcement. If we haven't, you've redded it enough
during football season. No turn onred. That's it. That's simple.

(51:05):
Yeah, there's a sign that saysit. It's not that we don't want
to turn on red. No,no, no, The sign says you
can't, and neither. Tony andI are big fans of getting traffic tickets.
All right, well, we'll chatagain in about twenty minutes. Tone,
thanks so much. That's great, monks. Tony Pike is at the
Twin Peaks in Westchester watching the Redsgame. They're on the top of the
second inning in Seattle. Reds andMariners are scoreless. Andrew Abbott on the

(51:28):
mound for Cincinnati will keep you updatedon that all afternoon long. And again,
we're moments away from giving away moreAerosmith tickets here on ESPN fifteen thirty
plus Brendanan and Jones on baseball aswell. I like sports gambling. I
have long been a proponent of legalizedsports gambling. Legalized sports gambling has its

(51:49):
critics. Some of those critics willuse stories like this one in an effort
to talk about the ills of sportsgambling, or what folks will do is
use this to kind of pinpoint theweird place that leagues have put themselves in
by being on board with legalized sportsgambling, by forging partnerships with online betting

(52:13):
partners like FanDuel. Well, letme read the story here very quickly.
John tay Porter of the Toronto Raptorshas been banned from the league banned lifetime
ban after an investigation revealed he haddisclosed confidential information to betters, limited his
participation in at least one game whilehe was with the Raptors and bet on

(52:35):
NBA games while playing in the gLeague. The NBA says in a release
announcing his band that the investigation remainsopen and that it is sharing information with
federal authorities. The ESPN. I'mreading this from ESPN. They've reached out
to the US to Department of Justiceand the FBI. For comment, says
Adam Silver Quote, there is nothingmore important than protecting the integrity of NBA

(52:57):
competition, which is why by JohnTay Porter's blatant violations of our game rules
are being met with the most severepunishment. The investigation was launched by the
NBA into Porter in late March.Sports folks noticed irregular betting on the over
under on the Reserve Center statistics intwo Raptors games. In both games,
Porter exited after playing only a fewminutes. The investigation also found that Porter

(53:22):
revealed information about his own health toa known sports better ahead of a March
twentieth game against Sacramento. Another better, privy to the information, placed an
eighty thousand dollars same game parlay betthat featured unders on Porter stats and would
win one point one million dollars.According to the NBA, Porter played three
minutes before leaving the game with anillness. The bet was not paid.

(53:45):
League investigation also revealed the Porter placedat least thirteen bets on NBA games using
an Associates online betting account. Thebets ranged from fifteen dollars to twenty two
thousand dollars. By the way,Elie Dela Cruz just went deep to make
it won nothing Cincinnati. The betsrange from fifteen dollars to twenty two thousand
dollars. NBA said the total payoutfrom those bets was a shade over seventy

(54:07):
six thousand dollars net winnings of nearlytwenty two thousand dollars. None of the
bets involved any in which Porter played. Three of the bets were parlays,
including one that included a bet onthe Raptors to lose. All three bets
lost. So this guy's been bannedpermanently by the NBA. Now many we'll
use this. You're gonna hear this. I'm sure you already have. You're

(54:27):
gonna read it. See, thisis the slippery slope we've decided to go
down when the NBA and when othersports leagues have gotten into bed with betting
companies. Look, man, thisisn't hard. I'm allowed to bet on
NBA games. I don't work inthe NBA. John Tay Porter worked in
the NBA. He's not allowed tobet on NBA games. There are things
that I'm not allowed to do inmy job that others can do in their

(54:51):
job. If I was on apodcast, I could use the F word.
I'm not on a podcast. I'munder FCC rule. I can't use
the F word. We have regulationsregarding Plugola and Pale that make it illegal
for me to do things like accepta product and promote it on the air.
I can't do that, or makemy own commercials for a company that's

(55:14):
given me something without going through theradio station. There are things I'm not
allowed to do. Every job hasits own rules. Other people might be
allowed to do those things that acertain job or a certain employer tells its
employees it can't do. This isn'thard. It's not hard if you want
to bring Pete Rose's name into theconversation from three and a half decades ago.

(55:37):
And it's not hard if you wantto talk about, well, here's
the gray area or here's the slipperyslope that these leagues have decided to let
their players go down. They're inbed with the gaming companies. Ads for
fan duel and DraftKings, etc.Are on games. They're taking sponsorship money
from gambling companies. Everybody's betting legallyinvariably, you're gonna have athletes who get

(56:00):
in trouble well, if they getin trouble, they deserve to be banned.
This guy deserves to be banned bythe NBA. He blatantly broke a
rule that's not that hard to interpret. There's very little gray area here.
I have friends who work for theBengals who will tell you they can't do
March Madness brackets, Like, it'snot that hard to figure out. I

(56:20):
can do a March Madness bracket. You can do a March Madness bracket.
They can't, And if they don'tlike it, they can go do something
else for a living that allows themto do a March Madness bracket. I'm
sorry, man, this isn't theleague's fault. This isn't the fault of
the gambling being legal. By theway, if gambling's not legal, there's
a very good chance what this guywas involved in goes undetected. Hell yeah,

(56:43):
he should be banned. And Idon't feel a shred of sorry for
him because or sorrow for him, because the rules that he broke are very
easy to understand. Because you're allowedto do something doesn't mean he should be
allowed to It's not that difficult. This isn't an example of the ills of
sports wagering. And it's not anexample of the NBA or any other sports

(57:07):
league's hypocrisy because it's not letting itsplayers bet all while taking gambling money.
It's not that hard anyway. Goodluck to this idiot for getting kicked out
of the NBA. All right, what are we doing now? Or we're
giving away Aerosmith tickets if you knowyour Bengals draft history, we need two

(57:28):
contestants. Aerosmith is coming to theHeritage Bank Center on October seventeenth, a
Thursday night. Thursday night concerts arethe best. Thursday Night, October the
seventeenth, Aerosmith is coming. Ifyou think you know a lot about Bengals
draft history, you're welcome to tryto play. We're looking for two contestants
five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty eight six

(57:50):
six, seven oh two three seven, seven six as well, we're giving
away Aerosmith tickets when we come backon ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati Sports Station
snati's ESPN given away Aosmith tickets. Here in just a second, quickly say
the sports head lines are a serviceof Kelsey Chevard Lay, home of lifetime
powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval goodat kelsey chev dot com. That's pretty

(58:15):
much hitting the post right there,Tarn, that's pretty much doing it Redsley.
The Mariners won nothing. Bottom ofthe second inning, Andrew Abbott on
the hill, Ellie de la Cruzaccounting for the game's only run with his
fifth home run of the season. There are nine players in baseball who have
hit more home runs in twenty twentyfour. It's early, but who have
hit more home runs in twenty twentyfour then Ellie dela Cruz. Red's looking

(58:39):
to avoid a series suite the homethis weekend for the Angels. We've got
tonight on ESPN fifteen thirty. We'vegot the NBA play in games. You've
got the Heat and Sixers, andthen you've got the Hawks and Bulls,
both games on ESPN fifteen thirty.Vic Lockin is leaving uc to go play
at Clemson. Hits the portal.Good luck to him, and I think

(59:00):
that's all I got for local sportsheadlines. All right, We've done this
every day this week. On Mondaywe played a little game of Know your
Mariners, Reds Connections, and thenyesterday it was know your David Bell,
and today it's no your Bengals drafthistory, Tarren, do you mind telling

(59:21):
me? I'm not in studio today, so you know I don't have the
whiz bang, the computers, allthe stuff. Terren's got to do even
more work than usual. Who dowe have with us to play our little
goofy game for Aerosmith tickets? Tarran. First consistent we have on the line
today is David. All right,we have David. David. Are you
there? I am here, allright? Are you excited? I'm ecstatic?

(59:49):
I can tell very good. Arewe have David? Who else do
we have there? Tarran? Mancoming down the line for a number of
guest Number two is Mac. Wehave Mac? Mac. Did you play
yesterday? Mac? Was that allowedto play yesterday? I don't know.
There's no rule that says you can't. Did you did you win yesterday?
I did not leave you. Yeah, that was me yesterday. And good

(01:00:12):
luck to hit the lock unless theyplays that to you too. I hear
you all right. By the way, cal Rawley just hit the ball about
five thousand feet, so it's oneone in Seattle, Arran. Who are
we allowing to call the virtual coinin the air? But we let Mac
call yesterday? So we're gonna letDavid call today. So we're gonna let
David call the the virtual all right, David, we need a heads or

(01:00:35):
tails from you. Heads? Headsalready says heads. Flip the coin Terran,
WHOA wow, that went way upin the al right, what do
we have? It is tails? It is tails, all right? So
that means Mac gets to pick.Mac. Would you like to play or
would you like to let our buddyDavid do all the hard work. I'm
gonna give it a shot. He'sgonna give it a shot. Very good,

(01:00:58):
all right, David. Stand bythe way, this we have five
five questions. These are all relatedto Bengals draft history, and Mack has
to get three of the five correct. If he does, he's gonna go
see Aerosmith. If he fails todo that, then David is gonna go
see Aerosmith, and then the twocould figure out what to do with the
other ticket. I have no idea. All right, Mac, are you
excited? Are you ready? Iam all at Bengals? Alright, me

(01:01:22):
too? All right, Taryn, are you ready? I'm ready? All
right? Very good. I'm watchingStuart Fairchell belly flop out there in centerfield.
This isn't gonna go well? Allright, here we go question number
one. These are Bengals draft relatedIn nineteen ninety four, Mac, the
Bengals selected two players from Ohio Statein the draft. One was Dan Wilkinson,

(01:01:46):
Big Daddy. They took him numberone overall. Who was the other
Buckeye the Bengals took in the ninetyfour draft? Was it A Raymond Harris,
B Jeff Cothine or C Jerry Reynolds. I'm on, you'll B B
B. You know what B is? Correct, tar Doy, you have

(01:02:06):
a bell for our guy? Verygood? Sorry? Jeff Gothroe, a
running back yes played at Ohio State, taken by the Bengals in the nineteen
ninety four draft. All right,so so far Mac is one for one.
He's got to get two of thenext four. Correct. Here we
go. In the two thousand andone draft, Mac, the Bengals drafted
three players with the last name Johnson. One was Chad, one was Rudy.

(01:02:32):
Who was the third A Ricky bRonald or c Real c re All
ce Real is the correct answer?A linebacker at Stanford Real Johnson's Wow,
Look at this? All right?Mac off to a good start. He's
two for two. All he's gotto do is is get one more correct

(01:02:55):
and he's gonna go see Errison. All right, here we go in uh.
In two thousand and three Mac,as you probably know, the Bengals
took a quarterback with the number oneoverall pick in the draft. That was
Carson Palmer. They actually took aquarterback the following year. Who was it
two thousand and four draft A ScottCovington, b Casey Bramlett or C.

(01:03:17):
Jeff Row He je believe, Ohno, it was not Jeff Row was
taking a few years later was CaseyBramlett, drafted out of Wyoming with the
seventh pick of the or the seventhround pick in they two thousand and four

(01:03:39):
draft. I just hang on,I want my piece of paper. All
right, that's okay, you're stillgood. You're still good. Casey Bramlett
is the answer. But forget aboutthat. Put that in the rearview mirror.
You got two right, you gotone wrong. All you gotta do
is get one of the next two. Are you ready? Yeah? Okay?

(01:04:00):
Five draft featured notable names like DavidPollock, Odell Thurman, and Chris
Henry, but it was this playertaken in the seventh round by the Bengals
in that same draft, who endedup playing in more NFL games than anyone
in that year's Bengals draft class. Was it a Domatop peco B Jonathan Finane

(01:04:21):
or C Chinna Dooman Duke Way.I'm gonna have to go can hand him
again? A Domotop Peco B JonathanFinnane or C Chinnan Dooman Duke Way.

(01:04:42):
Let's go with Duke Way. UhNo, it was Jonathan playing in more
games than any of those other players. He was taken by the Bengals h
in the seventh round of the twothousand and five draft. All right,
it all comes down to this door die. You don't want to blow
a two zero lead. Mac Herewe go last one. Twenty eighteen was

(01:05:04):
the last draft the Bengals had withMarvin Lewis as the head coach. Four
players the Bengals drafted that year playedin an NFL game in twenty twenty three.
Jesse Bates, Sam Hubbard, MalikJefferson and who else. I'll give

(01:05:25):
you three choices, A Billy Price, B Darius Phillips or C Logan Woodside
show ends at six o'clock. Mac, So something happened with Max, something

(01:05:46):
to happen with Mac. He hisphoned down. Something happened with Mac his
phone. We dropped the call.So Mac is on the verge of either
winning Aerosmith tickets or blowing a chanceto win Aerosmith tickets, and then the
call dropped. He's gone, Yeah, he's gone. What is the contingency
for this? This has never happened? Do we have one? Do we

(01:06:08):
give Mac a chance to call back? Do we give them to David?
Do we make David answer the question? What do we do here? Tarren?
I think is there? So?I think David? All right,
So we're gonna make David answer thisquestion? Is Mac Mac? Mac?
Did Mac drop off? Y?Mac has gone? This is David?

(01:06:30):
Mac has gone? All right,David, well it could be your lucky
day. Are you ready? Doyou want me to reread the question?
Yes? Please? Very good? All right, Live Radio. The two
thousand and eighteen draft was the lastone that the Bengals had Marvin Lewis as
their head coach. Marvin's last draftuh There were four players from that Bengals

(01:06:56):
draft class who played in an NFLgame last year. Jesse Bates is one
of them, Sam Hubbard is oneof them. Malik Jefferson is one of
them. Who is the fourth?I'll give you three choices, Billy Price,
Darius Phillips, or Logan Woodside. One of those three players played in
an NFL game in twenty twenty three. Can you name him Billy Price?

(01:07:24):
Correct answer is see Logan Woodside,a quarterback out of Toledo game last year
for the Atlanta Falcons. All right, now, go ahead, Tara,
do me a favor. Put Davidon hold, because now we're sort of
in a weird spot. Mac didn'tstick around long enough to win the ticket
called what if It's not Mac?So you know, we're sort of in

(01:07:46):
a weird place here. Mac didnot fulfill the requirement of getting three questions
correct to win the tickets because hehas bad cell service or somebody jumped him
or something I don't know, Andthen we have David. All David was
have to do is let Max screwit up. But then Mac wasn't around
us screw it up. So thenwe offered David a chance. We made
him answer a question. He didn'tget it right either. What if we

(01:08:09):
just can we make David and Macgo to the show with each other.
Can we make them? I don'tknow if we can make them. We
probably can't make them. We can'tforce them. Mac never called back.
No, there was someone called itand I missed it, so it wasn't
Mac. All right, So isDavid still on hold? David still here?
Yes? All right? Because thissegment has taken way too much time.

(01:08:32):
We're going to give them the David. But if Mac calls back,
we will give him priority and achance to win again tomorrow. This is
like a week long quest for Macto win Aerosmith tickets. Congratulations to David,
Although you think about it, hereally didn't earn them. But nonetheless
he's going to go see Aerosmith Octoberseventeenth. Heritage Bank Center tickets are on

(01:08:54):
sale now. Congratulations to David, who would appear knows nothing about Bengals Draft
Street. But that's okay, that'sfine, that's that's completely all right.
And if Matt calls back, we'llgive him a chance to play along with
somebody else tomorrow and there you go. Greatest game ever week. Last time
a caller wins something and lost,do you think he just was like screw

(01:09:17):
it. I'm not going to embarrassmyself. I don't know the answer,
so I'm just gonna hang up.I really I hope he's okay. Yeah,
I mean, it concerns me thathe didn't call back. Mitt.
Please tweet us if you're on Twitteror or something, email us, write
us a letter, call whatever. We just want to know that you're okay,
and if you are, we'll giveyou another shot out of tomorrow for
a third consecutive day. We stillhave to briefly check in with Tony Pike

(01:09:40):
at Twin Peaks plus Breneman and Joneson baseball. Coming up on ESPN fifteen

thirty cruise development orange and black draftprofile. Choose Cruise presented by Pellow,

(01:10:02):
HOLMANRV dot Com. Now here's Moeggerwith a name you need to know.
The Bengals need long term answers ontheir offensive line, but they could also
use a rookie who could come inand play right away. Oregon States TALIASA
Fuaga fits the mole. Fuaga wasa first team All American last season.

(01:10:23):
He's six foot five and a halfand three hundred and twenty five pounds,
and scouts say he carries his largemass well. He's been described as a
people mover in the run game, but there are concerns about the fact that
he was called for six fall startslast season. Still with twenty five starts
over the last two seasons, hehas the experienced teams are looking for when
searching for players who can play immediately. Keep an eye on Oregon State tackle

(01:10:47):
Talisa Fuaga has more listening for thenext player profile on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bengals. They're modern daycon artists, right. We
are way late, so this isgoing to have to be quick. Tony
Pike is at Twin Peaks in Westchesterwatching the Reds and watching Stuart Fairchild try
to play center field, and he'swith us, Now, Tony, what's

(01:11:09):
up? Yeah, most crazy,Stuart Fairchild. I'm not really tracking the
ball in center. Ellie day LaCruz, who maybe should be batting three
homers. Sure, hope he getsan extra bott later in the game if
it's needed, But other than that. Know, we're watching the game here
at Twin Peaks in Westchester. Thefood is fantastic. That drinks or ice
cold. It's an awesome time uphere at Twin Peaks. Happy to be

(01:11:30):
here here till six o'clock. Soif you can still make it up between
now and then, come by andsay hello and watch the Reds. All
right, we'll check it again atfive twenty Tony, Thank you so much.
Thanks mom. All right, thereyou go, Tony Pike at Twin
Peaks in Westchester. It's one oneReds and Mariners bottom three. Brendan and
Jones on baseball next teen thirty Cincinnati'ssports station. What's up? Good ad

(01:11:56):
for new Muleggert ESPN fifteen thirty.Thank you for joining us. It's the
five o'clock Happy Hour, which isa service for michelob Ultra. How good
is one of those sound right now? Perfect for baseball, perfect for hanging
out, perfect for the golf course. You name it, Nick Ultra brood
for active people. Reds are activeright now? Getaway day in Seattle,

(01:12:18):
Cincinnati. Excuse me, trying toavoid a sweet Andrew Abbott is on the
hill. Here's the good news.Ellie de la Cruz has a home run.
Here's the bad news that is,thus far, at least through four
innings, the Reds only hit.I guess on the good news column would
be the fact that through three inningsAndrew Abbott has given up nothing more than

(01:12:38):
a cow Raleigh solo homer. Soit's one one Reds and Mariners as Seattle
hits in the bottom of the fourthinning. This in the heels of a
last night somewhat frustrating three one lossto Seattle in the middle game of the
three game series. We have someBengal stuff to get to a little bit
later on. I think this.I think there's a massive overreaction to the

(01:13:00):
biggest story in the NFL that we'vegot to spend some time on. Tony
Pike is gonna join us again.I have not terran for what it's worth.
I'm hearing something in my ear.I don't know what it is.
One of the biggest stories in sportsthis week. The WNBA had its draft
and the Indiana Fever had the numberone overall pick, and they take Caitlin

(01:13:24):
Clark, who this past season wasthe biggest star in college basketball, and
so unsurprisingly she goes to Indiana withthe number one pick. The Indiana Fever
are gonna be on TV a bunchof times this year. I think thirty
of their thirty six games are gonnabe nationally televised. They sold a bunch
of season tickets. I think itwill be really interesting. Caitlin Clark sort

(01:13:44):
of transcended and became a household nameas a college basketball player. The WNBA
doesn't share real estate. It's regularseason, doesn't share real estate with a
lot of other stuff going on.I do think it'll be interesting to see
how many people who watched her alot, watched her habitually at Iowa,
follow her to the next level.I have not heard this audio, but

(01:14:10):
my guy Tarn Tarren Bland brought thisup to me during the break. Greg
Doyle, many many many years ago, hosted this show with me for nine
months in two thousand and seven. This show was actually at the time,
it was on from nine am thenoon, and when it started it was
Greg and me together and he carriedme for nine months and then he moved

(01:14:33):
on and things have worked out quitewell for Greg Doyle for for a long
time now. He has been thelead sports columnist of the Indianapolis Star.
And so the Indiana Fever, theIndianapolis they the I should know this.
Are they the Indiana Fever tarn orIndianapolis Indiana Fever Indiana? All right?
Like the Pacers, They're not theIndianapolis Pacers. They're the Indiana Pacers.

(01:14:57):
So the Indiana Fever they get KaitlinClark. They have a media availability and
Greg Doyle is there. He isgetting roasted, I guess on the internet
for sounding creepy, taring. Youhave the audio of my former partner Greg
Doyle sounding creepy. Are we readyfor this? Yes? All right?
Do we have to apply any contexthere? I mean that she's had our

(01:15:21):
press conference for Indiana and he hasa question. All right, he asked
the question. All right, goahead and uh and give me the audio
Greg Doyle apparently sounding creepy talking toCaitlin Clark. Hi, Caitlin, Greg
Doyle, Indie Star. Real quick, let me do this. Get up

(01:15:41):
the hard gesture. You like thathard gesture. I like that you're here.
I like that you're I do thatin my family after every game.
So okay, well we'll start doingit to me and we'll get along.
Just fine. So question is Idon't know what's the creepier part there.
Is it the him saying do thatto me and will be just fine,

(01:16:03):
or the I like that you're here. By the way, Greg Doyle doesn't
do radio hits anymore, so wedon't have to get we don't have to
worry about him getting mad at us. I'm not going on the air with
us. I do love Greg, but give me that audio one more time.
Tarin Hi, Caitlin, Greg Doyle, Indie star, real quick,

(01:16:27):
let me do this. Does theheart like? Do you like that?
I like that you're here. Ilike that you're here. I do that
in my family after every game.So okay, well we'll start doing it
to me and we'll get along justfine. So question, let's see like
that. The second part of that, I think is is kind of funny.
And you could hear everybody in thebackground, you know, laughing.

(01:16:48):
It's lighthearted, it's funny, it'skind of good. The I like that
you're here. I like that you'rehere. That if any part of that
exchange is creepy, I think thatwould be that would be it. I
like that you're here, Greg Doyle, Greg Doyle, I'm I think Greg

(01:17:09):
is I think fifty seven and CaitlynClark. How old is Kaitlyn Clark twenty
two, twenty three something like that. Yes, yeah, so the internet
is saying that Greg Doyle was shootinghis shot. I don't know that he
was shooting a shot. I justthink he was trying to like warm her
up or I don't know. Ilike that you're here. That's our friend,

(01:17:30):
Greg Doyle and Caitlyn Clark. Earliertoday, as she was introduced to
the media in the Hoosier State asthe number one overall pick in the WNBA
draft to the Indiana Fevers. Isorry for interrupting, but we do have
a big breaking you see news. What have we got? You know?

(01:17:51):
One d Alexander, she announced asher commitment yesterday. Today we have audio
of where she chose chose from Purcell. You have that, all right,
let's go, let's hear. Let'shear de Alexander, Ohio's miss basketball opportunities
to be able to go to theircollege. Gray d this is your big
moment. The Alexander Cincinnati's watching plentyaround the country interested in the women's game.

(01:18:15):
Watching the stage is yours decision time. I would like to say that
I'm committing to the University of Cincinnati. Congratulations to de Alexander and the University
of Cincinnati. Katrina Merriweather in hersecond season, going into her second season

(01:18:36):
as UC's head coach, d Alexander, a five star commit, ranked number
six in the class of twenty twentyfive according to multiple recruiting services. She
narrated down to Illinois and Ohio State. If I'm not mistaken, she was

(01:18:56):
recruited by everybody. I mean likelike she was recruited by Iowa, she
was recruited by Yukon. I don'trecall if she was offered by by South
Carolina, but for the most part, like just recruited by nearly at least
every big brand national women's program. And so she is going to stay at
home. Two time Ohio miss basketball, d Alexander staying home to play at

(01:19:21):
the University of Cincinnati. Good forher, Good for Katrina Meriweather. They
got Gillian Hayes to come back,I believe for a fifth year. And
look, that's awesome, very good. You see basketball a major, major
commitment. That's a top When isthe last time a men's basketball program in
this area and I'm not asking rhetorically. I'm asking because I genuinely don't know.

(01:19:45):
When is the last time a men'sbasketball program in the Greater Cincinnati area
got a top ten player according torankings, like twenty four to seven.
You see, women just got oned Alexander staying home to play or Katrina
Merriweather at the University of Cincinnati. We stole that audio from a Channel five
we did, Is that correct?Yes, very good? Borrowed it.

(01:20:10):
We borrowed it. Yeah, wedidn't steal it. They could still have
it. We borrowed it. Wewe lifted it from them. See if
you can get d Alexander on theshow, because I think she would be
fascinating to talk to. Most ofyour really really good players, like not
even close to the caliber of dAlexander. It feels like they don't even
come close to staying home, whetherit's UC or Xavier or anywhere else in

(01:20:30):
the area. And she's staying atUC, staying home in Cincinnati to play
at U see, and so congratulations, that's pretty cool. That's a big,
big get for a program obviously, like the men going into year two
in the Big Twelve. So goodfor d Alexander, good for Katrina Merriweather,
good for the UC women's basketball program. Was was anybody creepy at that
press conference? No? No,No Roberson statue though that was huge.

(01:20:58):
They did it in front of OscarRobertson statue at UC. Yes, So
then was it any major surprise thatshe said she was gonna go to UC?
Probably not the background on two Yeah, so they kind of yeah.
So, like, I know, she narrowed her final three choices to you
see, Illinois and Ohio State. But she wasn't gonna go in front of

(01:21:19):
the Oscar Robertson statue and say, yeah, I'm gonna play for the Buckeyes,
right, I'm gonna go play forKevin McGuff that that wasn't gonna happens.
I've been also in heel move bigtime. I mean I kind of
would respect that. All right.Good for d Alexander, congratulations by all
accounts. Uh, just a lovelyyoung woman, and uh it's neat that

(01:21:43):
she's gonna stay home and uh andplay at U. See all right,
it's a quarter after five. Ourphone numbers, by the way, are
five, pine, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty and
eight six six seven oh two Uthree seven seven six. Uh we we
do. I have yet to askmy pole question. I was gonna ask
two. I I got rid ofone. I'm going to ask the other.
It is Hunter Green related, becauseI keep hearing people talk about his

(01:22:03):
money. By the way, theReds are batting at the top of the
fifth inning. It's one to onein Seattle. Getaway Day, Reds and
Mariners. Will check in with TonyPike one more time, and we'll hear
from Joe Goodbarry on the draft. We have a lot to do between now
and six. On ESPN fifteen thirtyCincinnati Sports Station Cincinnati's twenty two minutes after

(01:22:24):
five o'clock. This is ESPN TV'sErnie. I'm linger. Thank you for
joining us today a delightful Wednesday afternoon, in a delightful afternoon if you're in
the Westchester area, to hang outwith our friend Tony Pike, who is
posted up as we speak at TwinPeaks right off the Union Center Boulevard exit
watching the Reds and M's and agood old good one, Tony, how
are we doing? A good oldgood one is right mo Twin Peaks,

(01:22:46):
Westchester, So easy off the UnionCenter exit. You can be here in
a minute. The beer is freezingcalled, the food is fantastic, and
the amount of TVs in this placemake it a perfect spot. Reds,
baseball, or whatever sport you're into. There's a group of gentlemen right now
at the bar that are very interestedin a soccer match that's going on.
I believe it's an extra time, but just an all around good spot to

(01:23:11):
watch some sports and have some foodand drinks. Are the soccer fans with
you? No, they're not withme, but they are very very excited
about whatever's happening in the soccer match. Wow. Very good that maybe they've
been there all day long. Itwould appear that they have been here longer
than I have been here. Hasanybody bought you a beer? No beer,

(01:23:36):
mo, We're approaching five point thirty. I'm here till six. We
had a very nice gentleman who camein and said hello and asked me to
sign a University of Cincinnati flag.I thought maybe that would at least warrant
a nice cold brew, but thatis not the case. So still hanging

(01:23:56):
out watching Andrew Abbitt deal, watchingthe Red Hitters hopefully figure out how to
get more than just one hit atthis point. So wait a minute.
A guy shows up at Twin Peakswith a UC flag. He asks you
to sign it, you oblige, and then he doesn't do anything for you.
No, it was gone like athief in the night. You're a

(01:24:16):
better man than me. You're abetter man than I. Thank you.
Miss. I would have said, you may be a cold one. I'll
I'll put my John Hancock on thatthing. Correct that now, looking back
hindsight twenty twenty, possibly what Ishould have done. Yeah, that's why
you need me with you. Allright. You're there till six o'clock hanging
out the Twin Peaks in Westchester.Right off I seventy five. Go see

(01:24:38):
Tony and watch the ball game.It will somebody buy the man a beer.
That'd be great. Tony, thankyou so much. Good there,
I'm thirsty. Thanks Mom, Yes, Tony is thirsty. Go buy him
a beer at Twin Peaks in Westchester. We were talking before the break.
D Alexander from Purcell the miss basketballin the state of Ohio for two straight

(01:24:59):
years. She's gonna go play atthe University of Cincinnati. If you're a
college basketball fan, I think Thisis a really fun sort of post tournament
time where it's free agency and youcan talk about established players going from one
program to another. Xavier got abig man, John Hugley, who started
his college basketball career at Pitt playedlast season at Oklahoma, average eight and

(01:25:23):
a half points a game in avery efficient seventeen minutes last year. He's
six foot ten. So Sean Millergets a big who has played in the
ACC, he's played in the BigTwelve, and now he's moving on to
the Big East to play for theMusketeers. Good get for Sean Miller.
We've spent a lot of time yesterdaytalking about the players that the University of
Cincinnati is getting, and they've they'vegot a scholarship to play with. But

(01:25:48):
Arrington Page from USC and Connor Hickmanfrom Bradley, who made over forty percent
of his three point shots last yearfor the Braves, both going to UC.
Of the things about this really quickone would just be, as much
as I love free agency and collegebasketball, and let's let's call it what

(01:26:10):
it is, it's free agency incollege basketball now at the end of every
season, there is some trepidation withregard to which players are going to leave,
and how are you going to tofill those holes left by players that
you don't want to leave. Butwhen the season ended, as much as

(01:26:33):
I don't think anybody was panicking aboutGisel James leaving or Dan Skillings leaving or
Siemas Lukoshis leaving, if we wereto divide the roster into three columns,
if you will players that you reallyhope stay, players that you hope stay

(01:26:56):
but won't be devastated if they leave, and the players you're kind of okay
with leaving and maybe want them toleave. I think things have worked out
pretty well. Like the players thatyou would say those are the likely building
blocks for a team that next yearcan be better than the one that Wes
Miller had, and you're one ofthe Big Twelve, those building blocks are

(01:27:18):
still here. Victor Lockin if youdon't if you don't know, is is
off to Clemson and good for vic. I don't think that Vick Lockin was
a Big twelve player, And asmuch as I really like him and I
will root like hell for him,I don't know that he's an ACC player,
But you know, okay, goodluck to him. Jamille Reynolds there

(01:27:38):
was some good, but I don'tknow. I don't I don't know that
he had a higher ceiling going intohis next year than what we saw from
him at uc and frankly what wesaw from him at his previous two stops,
UCF and Temple. I feel likeif you look at who they bring
back, what they bring in,and then who joins the program next year,

(01:27:59):
I think expect should be pretty high. I don't get too wrapped up
in stuff like off season bracketology orway too early top twenty five lists,
but I think all of us wouldagree who care about the program, that
this is gonna be a season whereit's gonna be past fail. You make
the tournament or you don't. Andlet's be honest, make the tournament is
gonna for most of us at leastbe more than just you know, sneak

(01:28:25):
in, barely get in, beone of the last few in, or
play and date, and it's gonnabe get to the tournament and then have
a chance to do some damage oncewe're there, based on who they bring
back, based on who they bringin, based on who comes over.
I think you're being very reasonable ifyou go into this season not only thinking
Okay, Wes has to make itbecause it's just year four and it's been
a few years since you see madethe NCAA Tournament. I think if you

(01:28:46):
look at the talent and you lookat the roster, you should expect them
to be playing in March next season. I also feel like Chad addressed this
on social media last night. HGigsel James was the backup point guard until
dayd A. Thomas got hurt. Now, once Gisel took over as the
starting point guard, it was completelyreasonable to watch how he played and wonder,

(01:29:14):
God, should he have been thestarting point guard all along? That's
totally fair. I've wondered that. But as the season unfolded, as he
continued in the backup role, butyou had a lot of folks who thought,
look, this is guaranteed to endpoorly because look, they're not starting
him, he's gonna hit the portal. Well, that didn't happen. And

(01:29:34):
maybe it didn't happen because Gigsel nowknows he's more likely to start because when
he did start he was terrific.Or they red shirted Ravon Griffith. Now
Ravon's interesting, right, He's obviouslya local kid, a lot of excitement
for him playing for Uce, butyou know, because they red shirted him,

(01:29:55):
you had a lot of folks whothought, well, he's not gonna
stand for that, and he goingto hit the ground, He's gonna hit
the road, and he's gonna leaveand he's gonna play somewhere else. I'll
be honest with you, I don'tknow that in the world of nil after
not playing this year, he couldhave found more money elsewhere than a school
from the city that he's based in, right, if that makes sense.

(01:30:16):
But like, I don't know, maybe a coach knows his personnel. Maybe
maybe a coach communicates very clearly withhis players about what their roles are going
to be and how they're going tobe used. Uh, And there's a
clear understanding of how the first seasonis gonna unfold for Gisel James and how
the season's gonna unfold for Rayvon Griffith, and everybody's okay. Like, and

(01:30:42):
I sat on social media last night. I watched Rayvon on the bench all
year long. That dude, I'ma big body language guy. I'm a
huge body language guy. I watchedRayvon's body language sitting on the bench during
games. There was nothing about himthat would make you think he was unhappy,
discontent or angling to leave. Helooked invested in his teammates. He
looked invested in every game. Thatdoesn't mean that you know it's going to

(01:31:05):
work out for him long term. Here doesn't mean that a year from now
he's not going to hit the portal. Who knows college basketball is now a
year to year sport. But youknow, you heard these narratives get floated
all year long, and they theyreally proved to not really be based on
anything. And so maybe that shouldbe something we remember moving forward twenty nine

(01:31:30):
away from six o'clock. Some awesomedraft stuff. Joe Goodberry, the athletic,
not the athletic Joe Goodberry. We'vehad so many guests from the athletic
on that I'm used to saying. And Joe Goodberry Bengals on the Brain,
which his YouTube channel is awesome. And if you love draft content, chances
are you know the good work thatJoe does, he is going to do
some of that for us. Comingup in just about eight minutes on ESPN

(01:31:53):
fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station Cincinnati'sESPN fifteen thirty from the UC Health Traffic
Center regular Spikes Garver solo bomb bottomsix, Seattle up two to one on
Cincinnati's Sports Headlines and service of KelseyChevrolette. Andrew Abbott has pitched pretty well
five and two thirds, given upjust two runs. Problem is Reds have

(01:32:15):
just one hit. That one hitwas a solo homer by Elie de la
Cruz. But the bats, likethey were last night, largely silent against
Bryce Miller two to one, Seattlebottom six. Mariner's still batting. We'll
keep you up to date. Whatelse do we have? Oh? Poll
questions about Hunter Green? Not onHunter Yeah, about hunting Green's contract.

(01:32:36):
Thanks to as always our friends atUnited Heartland Insurance. Go to uhions dot
com United Heartland Insurance. They wantto be the greatest and biggest insurance company
in the world, and they willbe uhions dot com. It's about Hunter
Green's contract. Bargain or bust.Vote now at Mulleger. I got a

(01:32:59):
few minutes here, not a tonMike. Go ahead, you're on ESPN
fifteen thirty. What's up? Okay? I know you like Murphy as a
DT. If they can get himright at eighteen uh if if there's if
there's a first round tackle there,which I think there will be. I
would prefer that player. But ifthey draft Byron Murphy, I could certainly

(01:33:23):
understand why they would do that givenwhat he brings to the table. Your
ideal selection is an OT correct,Yes, okay, anybody in particular it's
available. Well, I mean, the guys that stand out most to me
are are players who are most whoare unlikely to be there at at at

(01:33:45):
eighteen, right like like you coulddo. You could do the Latham kid.
He probably not going to be there. We talked with We talked with
Dan Brugler about him yesterday, andso I think you're talking like Amarius Mims
from Georgia, uh fuag from OregonState. Latham is probably not going to
be there. He's a player fromAlabama. And then you know you could

(01:34:09):
go if they're taking one on Saturday. You start talking about Suamtea from Byu
Tyler Geidon. The jury is kindof out as to whether or not he's
a guy that you would give afirst round grade to or a second round
grade. The two names that jumpout to me, is most likely to
be there at that position that Ithink the eighteenth overall pick would work on

(01:34:29):
Amarius Mimes, who's a giant.He's six seven and a half three p
forty fits the profile of what theBengals use at tackle with Trent Brown and
Orlando Brown. And then tell yes, fa Waga from Oregon State not quite
as big, but by most accounts, is the slightly better prospect. Yeah,

(01:34:53):
and it seems like a lot ofthe some own guys that get into
the LAG do so well and they'reso tough. I really am partial to
them. Of course. I livedin Hawaii for a long time and got
to be around a lot of Samons, and I have a lot of respect
for him. Real quick question, whatever happened to like Mark Amazon and Tim

(01:35:14):
Lewis and Mike Boy my man Backin the day it was Don Burrows?
Are them guys also around here? Now? Are they gone? Mark Amazon
lives in town. I don't knowwhat he does, but I know he's
in town. Tim Lewis is livingin Utah. I do not know where
Don Burrow's formerly of Channel twelve is. Okay, all right, Well,

(01:35:35):
I appreciate the time, brother,Sorry it wasn't a more eventful call,
but anyway, that's right. Okay, there you go. Nineteen away from
six o'clock, eventful call with JoeBarry Joe Goodbury next. They're modern daycon
artists, stuve Bengals on the brainon YouTube and always kind enough to join
us pre draft. So if ifthe first seventeen Pigs go according to plan,

(01:35:59):
who do I want it? SoI'm assuming black Bowers is off the
board, that would be a Bengalsfan would be pretty happy to add another
weapon of Joe Brows Arsenal. Ithink the next one would be ol Fasano,
the left tackle from Penn State wholooks like a future Pro Bowl pass
protecting tackle. Could he play righttackle? Maybe maybe develop him for a

(01:36:19):
couple of years and move him overleft when Orlando Brown Junior is gone.
I expect he's probably gone. He'sfourteenth on the consensus rankings amongst everyone,
all the analysts in the in thein the internet world, so there's a
chance there, but you know, expecting to be gone. The next in
my opinion, are Tealifwonga, theoffensive tackle from Oregon State who's a right

(01:36:40):
tackle by trade. He's played athis whole career. Would be a great
fit. Power runner, run blocker, can move and get to the second
level. Can block linebackers? Canyou can pull him on pitches and get
him out in space and block. He's a nasty dude. He's He's not
an A plus pass protector like Fashanois. He's more of like a D
pass protector in an A plus rundefense run blocker. I think he'd be

(01:37:02):
a seamless fit and a transition there. Some teams see him as a guard,
so you could probably come in andplay and start over court of Wolston
at left guard and give you fivestarters. If not, I do think
there is a real good shot fordefensive tackle, and the one that everyone
seems to be the highest on isByron Murphy at the defensive tackle out of
Texas playton nose tackle at Texas. He's more of the body of a three

(01:37:23):
tech pass rusher, elite athlete, high end production. You're gonna have to
transition him to more of an NFLrole off the center, but I think
you could do a little bit ofit. And the Vengals don't have a
nose tackle on the roster. Itwould just be weird to have a three
hundred and five pounder play that role. But he's done it. And probably
could get on the field right awaydoing that. All right, So let's
say he's there and they take him, but they still have to address right

(01:37:45):
tackle. It's interesting. When thisprocess first started, all I heard about
was, boy, it's a greattackle class. It's really deep. It
feels like it's deep with first rounders. Is a deep with guys that you
could ask to play that position thatyou could get on Friday. So most
of the really good tackles come inthe first round. It is a position

(01:38:06):
that gets pushed up. Every teamcould use one, or at least half
of them are desperately needing one ora future one, so they get drafted
right away. So if we seeI think the over under right now is
nine and a half for offensive linemantaken in the first round, and that's
mostly tackles. So if we're sayingseven or eight of those guys are tackles,
it doesn't leave a lot for roundtwo. So you have to consider

(01:38:27):
that if you want to go ina different position in round one, if
it's Rock Bowers or wide receiver ora corner, which could happen, but
if that happens, you're making thatdecision that we are rolling the dice in
round two. There are a fewguys with incomplete profiles that look like they
may have the upside and could turninto that. Whether that's a Patrick Paul
out of Houston, but a careerleft tackle, you'd have to transition them
and as footwork are a mess anyway, so you're going to have to rebuild

(01:38:50):
them as it is. But theseare the type of guys we're talking about.
Roger Rosengarten, the right tackle fromWashington, the left tackle troyce Blatano,
who is going to be a firstround pick. Roder rosen Gartner is
one of the younger guys in thisclass, has the size, has the
athleticism, but he's definitely not Fatano, so you see a step down a
little bit there. But hey,I think that's a great second round roll

(01:39:11):
of the dice. You've got abunch of guys that are probably gonna get
drafted in the first ten picks beforethey even get to the Bengals. Whether
that's Kingsley, Sue Matteau of Buyu, Jordan Morgan out of Arizona, I
don't think there's gonna be great options. It's probably like Paul or rosmen Garten,
the two guys that I mentioned,But they're gonna need time and they're
gonna need some work. But that'swhat you're looking at. And round two,

(01:39:33):
the drop off from Byron Murphy athis position to everybody else, how's
deep? Is it not that crazy? Actually? I think Johnny Newton is
actually a better prospect, but hedidn't test, he didn't have the hype
of the whole offseason, and wedon't know where he's going to go now.
For whatever reason, it seems likeeveryone around the league has cooled on
him from being a top twelve pickwhen the process started in January. So

(01:39:56):
now he's ranked between like twenty fifthand thirty fifth on most the boards are
on the internet. So if that'swhere he goes, and a lot of
mocks, I just saw a melKuiper and Field yatesmock had the Bengals getting
Johnny Newton at forty nine. Ifthat's the case, then was talking a
plus peck. In my opinion,I think he could be Geno Atkins Grady
Jarrett type of defensive tackle line.I don't throw that comp out, but

(01:40:17):
that's the way he creates for usand all the work we do other than
that, then't realistic options in roundtwo, whether that's a Braden fist Got
a Florida State who is twenty four, but he's got the athleticism and the
strength and the power that you lookfor as a pass rushing, disruptive,
pain in the neck type defensive tackle. The next guy, probably Michael Hall

(01:40:39):
out of Ohio State, was morejust a pass rusher, not very good
at run defending, and those profilesnormally say role player, and that's probably
okay. The Bengals could use somemore interior pass rush. But if you
are looking for guys to defend therun and maybe get a nose tackle,
if that's what they really needed someoneto replaced DJ Reader, we're talking day
three picks only for that position. But pass rushers. I do like a

(01:41:01):
couple other Brandon Dorles from Morgan,Chris Jenkin more of a run defender,
but plays the position of the passrusher side of the three tech Quour Tech
five TECH from Michigan. I dothink there's a lot of options in round
two, round three, but thenose tackle spot if you don't and we
don't know where Savandra Sweat is,if you don't get him, if that's
the third four to fifth round pick, depending on his character issues. We're
talking most of these guys are goingto be four through seventh round draft picks.

(01:41:26):
Joe Goodberry Bengals on the Brain withJoe Goodberry thanks to First Star Media
Group, the Ultimate Draft Breakdown thelatest episode, along with a whole lot
of other draft related content. Iwant you to go back two years ago
because I'm I think Dag's hill andhis role on the team and what unfolds
in the coming months is really reallyinteresting. Right now, He's kind of
a man without a role and understandablybecause his play at safety last year it

(01:41:51):
left a lot to be desired. When you were evaluating him in the run
up to the draft two years ago, where did you project him best fitting
in the NFL? So he wasin my opinion, and what he played
at Michigan in my opinion, coincidehere. So he was a slop box
safety. So you can have aspin. And these are guys that pit

(01:42:11):
throughout the league have been emerging moreand more, whether it's Tyrone, Matthew
Right he was a slot kind ofbox strong safety, or a Buddha Baker
or a Jimmy Ward who was thefirst round pick Kyle Hamilton sam exact draft
for the For the Ravens, hewas a slop box safety where if he
would have if the Bengals would havebeen lucky enough to get Kyle Hamilton,
would they have the next year saidhey, we lost Jesse Bates, let's

(01:42:33):
make Kyle Hamilton a free safety becausewe need it. Like, think about
how bad you would have ruined anall pro career if you had done that.
They basically did that with Dax Hill. They said to Dak Dax,
we're not going to play you muchin your rookie year unless someone goes down,
and hey, it ended up beinga cornerbacks. Hope play cornerback for
a day. Other than that,we're going to move you to free safety
in year two and not give youmuch veteran safety help. We're gonna go

(01:42:56):
cheap with Nick Scott and oh that'sdidn't work. So now, because the
whole defense looked terrible last year,we're now going to move you to corner
And that's what it seems like ithas happened. It's what I've heard has
happened. He's gonna be in thecornerback room this year. They've replaced them
with Gino Stone, they were endedup able to fall and get bond bell
for freeback. Okay, so thesafety room is better, but you've now
wasted two years of decks should havebeen playing actually the Mike Hilton role.

(01:43:23):
So why did you draft him?If you had Mike Hilton, then you
had him signed for three more years. If the whole room wasn't in unison,
the vision from personnel down to thecoaches that this is what he is
in college and this is what heshould play in the NFL, and you
guys also collectively thought, no,let's move in the free safety. Then
you should have given him more timeand more development and more effort to make

(01:43:45):
sure he's that player. Otherwise youhave failed as an organization to have a
concrete plan and execute it. Numberone and number two, you burned the
first round pick in an era whereyou can't afford to do it. They've
really fumbled a bag here, Mo. Yeah, no, it certainly feels
that way. I feel for him. I'm interested in how this is going
to play itself out, and perhapswhat happens next week is going to go

(01:44:08):
a long way toward determining how itdoes play out. I always feel so
much smarter when I watch, whenI listen, when I have you on,
I cannot thank you enough. Ihope we can do it before the
season starts. Man, thank youso much, thanks for having me.
Let's talk after the draft so wecan review it a little bit. Most
definitely done. Sold will make ithappen. Joe, you're the best,
man. Thank you, Thank you, Joe Goodbary Bengals on the Brain.

(01:44:30):
His YouTube show is available because well, chances are you have YouTube, so
go and watch it. It isterrific. We have to go. We're
back at it tomorrow at three ohfive. Thank you so much for listening.
Thanks to Tarren Bland for producing.Have a great night. This is
