(00:00):
No one covers the Bengals like ESPNfifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station. Well,
hey, what's the good afternoon onMoedger. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Thank you for listening, hook forhaving an awesome Thursday afternoon, Having
an awesome Thursday afternoon. I cannottell you the amount of joy I get
(00:24):
from doing that last segment with Tonyand Austin for for reasons that mainly just
have to do with the inside jokes. You're not supposed to have inside jokes
when you have an outside audience. We are loaded this afternoon. Hi,
mamass from an MLS season pass onApple TV is going to be with us
at five point twenty to talk alittle f C Cincinnati. We are looking
(00:45):
forward to that. We have twoto today too. I think we have
two today because I don't know thatwe're going to have time to give them
away tomorrow, but we have.We have two pairs of Aerosmith tickets for
their show on October seventeenth at theHeritage Bank Center. We've played dumb little
trivia games every day this week.I don't know that I have one today,
(01:08):
And when we don't have a game, we sometimes default to guess the
foot We'll see. I don't know. We got some Bengals draft stuff to
get to in a bit. I'mgonna I'm gonna use what you may consider
some clumsy examples to make a pointabout this year's draft and use clumsy examples
from the Bengals past. Also, toward the end of our show yesterday,
(01:32):
we were having fun with my formco host Greg Doyle. Well, we
were having fun at his expense. But I have a question about the thing
that he is kind of in themiddle of which has to a degree drawn
the ire of many. He isgetting some criticism, much of which I
(01:53):
think is pretty fair and justified. But I just I have a question.
I have a lot of questions today. We'll ask them throughout the afternoon.
I also have a bit of ahard truth, I think on a hard
truth, I'm gonna say something abouttwo Reds that's gonna sound harsh, and
it's not meant to be harsh. It's not harsh at all. I'll explain
coming up in just a few minutesthis uh with this week in Seattle,
(02:14):
think about where we were on Sunday, Sunday night, Monday morning, Reds
go to Chicago and they wipe thefloor with an awful White Sox team without
three of its best players. Andwe're feeling pretty good right nine and six,
and they go to Seattle. TheMariners are not great, and maybe
they can keep it going. They'regonna miss Louise Castillo, get two out
of three and wow, what aroad trip, and instead, uh,
(02:37):
the outstanding red centric website redreporter dotcom has a really good summary of the
last three days in Seattle, whichwas a cacofphony, if you will,
that's right, I said, cacophony. I don't know how to spell cacophony,
but I use it anyway. Acacophony of bad bad base running,
bad pitching, bad relief pitching, bad managing, bad defense. Not bad
(03:04):
hitting, but bad timely hitting, bad situational baseball. Just three days of
bad, three days of bad acrossthe board. I concur with what the
guys were saying before me. Idon't know how you just leave Lucas Sims
in there to lose the game. Not that they were probably gonna come back
and win with the way that theyhit yesterday, but Lucas Simms pitched them
out of having any chance to winthat baseball game yesterday. I didn't feel
(03:29):
good about the game from the getgo, primarily because of the lineup.
I'm not obsessed over batting order, guy. I've established I would like to
think only a handful of things inmy time doing this show. But one
of them is I just I don'tobsess over the batting order as much as
others. That's not to say thatthat lineup construction isn't important. I just
(03:52):
I don't obsess over it as muchas many others too. But nonetheless I
look at it yesterday, stuartild Isbatting third. I said this to Austin
off the air. Stuart Fairchild battedthird in seven games last year. I
have no recollection of that, nonewhatsoever. But he batted third seven times
(04:17):
before the team quote got good? Why was he batting third? Because there
was nobody else really too bad third? That that would also describe yesterday.
No jam Or Candelario, no Christianand Carnassi on strand, although you could
certainly make the argument neither of thoseguys are ideal for the three spot.
(04:38):
No Matt McLain, of course,no TJ. Friedel Like. Unfortunately,
unfortunately, the Reds are doing somethings that if they had their way,
they would rather not do. Now, David Bell isn't solely responsible for the
batting order. You and I bothknow that many are unwilling to admit that
whatever the batting order is, peopleabove David Bell have signed off on it.
(05:00):
The lineup is, in most casesaround the sport, the result of
a collaborative effort. But okay,David Bell has input and writes down the
names on the card and has tospeak to a publicly. You think they
really want Stuart Fairchild batting third,of course they don't. You might argue,
well, Ellie de Lacruz should bebatting third, and I don't think
(05:23):
I'd have a huge problem with that. He was hitting second for much of
the Cactus League. He had thehome run yesterday, he had the home
run on Friday. In between, his production dipped a little bit. But
I'm all for as much Ellie aspossible, So yeah, hit him earlier
in the batting order. But letme come on, man, Stuart Fairchild
batted third yesterday because somebody had to. I mean, legitimately. You might
(05:46):
say, well, Spencer Steer shouldbat third, okay, but should he
be playing first? Base, No, but he was because somebody had to,
and yesterday it was Spencer Steer.Jonathan India looks painfully lost at the
plate right now, painfully so.And you know, you look at his
numbers, they're terrible reflective of wherewe are in the season. Eighteen games
(06:10):
when you are this early in theseason. He could have a good next
couple of games and the numbers aregoing to look more than respectable. But
forget the numbers, it's just howhe looks. He looks lost. I
mean, I've watched probably eighty percentof Jonathan india plate appearances since he arrived.
I've seen him look good. I'veseen him look locked in. I've
(06:30):
seen him look not so good.I've never seen him look like this.
He's batting lead off for this teamright now. Do you think they want
him batting lead off? The answeris no. Dj Frieda would be batting
lead off if well, if lifewere perfect, But for the Reds it's
not so. The thing, though, is I could say that about yesterday's
(06:54):
game, and you know they've they'vehad a bog or the flu, whatever
it is, whatever's made everybody sick, and that cost him Candelario yesterday and
hopefully he's back tomorrow night, regand Angels at GABP and hopefully a Cees
is back, and the Reds couldfield a team that's a little bit closer
to what they would like for theteam to look like. But we could
(07:15):
talk about how well Fairchild batted thirdbecause of what the Reds don't have,
and India's batting leadoff because of whatthe Reds don't have, and those things
may be true, and they mighthave been true yesterday, but the problem
in the short term is those thingsare also going to be true tomorrow,
and they're going to be true onSaturday, and they're going to be true
on Sunday, and for the foreseeablefuture, how does this team survive that?
(07:39):
But for me, the answer isnumber one, they need better starting
pitching. Now, you can't haveany major issue with how Andrew Abbot pitched
yesterday. He gave up the twohomers, but he gave his team a
chance to win. And we talkeda lot about Hunter Green yesterday. His
start on Tuesday night. There wassome good, which was he minimized the
damage, only gave up one run. There was the bad, which ninety
(08:00):
eight pitches through four innings, sohe's done. But this team's bullpen,
this team's bullpen is weird. Firstof all, they're averaging nearly five walks
per nine innings. That is notsustainable. That is not going to work.
Secondly, again, we've only playedeighteen games. I don't know what
anybody's role is. Like Alexis Diazis the closer and he has had his
(08:24):
issues pitched over an inning yesterday, which I guess, uh, but beyond
that, I don't know. Idon't know what anybody's role is. And
maybe that matters, maybe it doesn't. But I think the hope was going
to be that this year's bullpen,it would be a little bit easier to
(08:45):
clearly define and establish what everyone's roleis going to be, which is something
that really didn't happen last year doesn'thappen this season so far. It has
not something we mentioned before before theseason started, when you knew you weren't
gonna have Noelve Marte for half aseason, and you knew you weren't gonna
(09:05):
have Matt McClain maybe for the entireseason, and you knew you were gonna
be without TJ. Friedel for awhile. The team's pitching was gonna have
to step up. Yes, that'sstarting pitching, which across the board has
to be better. Frankie Montoss wasterrible on Monday, Hunter Green just simply
wasn't good enough. Andrew Abbott wasfine yesterday. But starting pitching's got to
(09:26):
be better. The relief work hasto be better. And I don't think
this bullpen. I think the numberis four point nine to seven walks per
nine inning, so basically five fivewalks per nine innings. That's the sort
of thing that's probably going to getbetter. But while and I keep using
the same term, while they're dealingwith such a small margin for error offensively,
(09:46):
which sounds weird coming off some ofthe big run totals they put up
in Chicago. The importance of goodbullpen work is amplified when your team is
batting. Stuart Fairchild third. Yourpitching's gonna have to be really really good.
Your defense is gonna have to bereally really good. Your base running
is gonna have to be really reallygood. None of those things happened in
(10:07):
Seattle. Uh. Our phone numbersare five point three, seven, four
nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixsix seven oh two three seven seven six
show preview video is up on xat mogar thanks to our friends at Emory
Federal Credit Union. Emory Federal CreditUnion. It was you know what it
was. It was six months agotomorrow, on the nineteenth of October.
(10:31):
I became a member of Emery FederalCredit Union and I haven't looked back.
Join me, check out EMORYFCU dotorg and go on X or Twitter,
whatever you want to call it,and we'll tell you everything we have happening
on the show today. Uh,Hunter Green and Ellie de la Cruz are
are are facing a nearly impossible task. I'll tell you what it is next
(10:56):
for me. It's twenty two minutesafter three o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen
thirty. My name's Mwegor. I'mthrilled that you're with us today at mullegor
on Twitter, our Twitter feeds theservice of Delta Dental, which is building
healthy, smart, vibrant communities forall good at Delta Dental eh dot com.
Some Bengals draft stuff a little bitlater on, and some college basketball
(11:18):
by the way, Dante Maddox,I'm not really sure to the surprise of
many, but nonetheless three o'clock todayannounced he is transferring from Toledo, which
we knew, but taking his talents, as we say, to Victory Parkway
and he'll play for Sean Miller andthe Xavier Musketeers next year. Maddox averaged
over fifteen and a half points pergame for the Rockets and shot forty percent
(11:39):
from behind the arc. Good newsfor XU, Good news for another college
basketball program that we'll get to herein just a bit. We've talked so
far, eighteen games into the season, a lot about Ellie dela Cruz and
Hunter Green. I mean, let'sbe honest, those are arguably the two
(12:00):
biggest names. Those are arguably thetwo guys who have the most upside.
They've they've i think, without question, been the two most talked about young
players the Reds have. Are theythe team's best right now? I would
argue with Hunter Green, no Eliede la Cruz. You know you can
make the argument. But both playersgot to the big leagues and arrived in
(12:22):
Cincinnati with a lot of hype.I'm going to tell you now something that's
going to sound like a criticism oran insult. Here goes, neither player
is going to live up to thehype, because how could they. I've
(12:46):
said this about Lebron James. Thegreat thing about Lebron James is he is
one of the few athletes in historyto not only live up to the hype,
but exceed it. And if youremember what it was like following his
high school career and what it waslike following him as a teenager, if
(13:09):
I would have said to you twentyone years ago, this guy is going
to live up to the hype andbe regarded by some as the greatest player
of all time, you would havesaid, there's no way yet that's happened,
regardless of what you feel about him, And I'm not sure what there
is to really not like that shouldbe celebrated. Very few things live up
to the hype, much less exceeded. So Hunter Green and Ellie de la
(13:33):
Cruz have had their ups and downs. Hunters made fifty big league starts.
I'm now interested in what starts fiftyone through one hundred looks like. Ellie
de la Cruz this time a yearago was still playing in the minor leagues.
But think of the things that weresaid and written and what accompanied them.
(13:54):
I mean, Hunter Green was onthe cover of Sports Illustrated still back
when that mattered, and was beingtalked about as one of the saviors of
the sport, one of the facesof the league. It's almost impossible for
anybody to live up to that kindof hype. Ellie Dela Cruz was talked
(14:16):
about as a guy who could beone day the best player in the sport.
Are you kidding me? By theway? Maybe true. It's a
lot of fun to think about thosethings and talk about those things. That's
probably not gonna happen. It's probablynot because the odds of that happening are
(14:37):
not in anybody's favor. So ifyou are going to measure those two guys
specifically by whether or not they liveup to the hype, you're setting them
up to fail. Ellie Dela Cruzmight be a multiple time All Star.
I think he will be. Ithink he might be an All Star this
year. He might be a guywho has wins so over Slugger Awards.
(15:01):
He might be a guy who isends up being the best player on a
team that consistently plays in the postseason. And if he does those things,
you will still find people who say, God, yes, but he didn't
live up to the hype. Youcan't do that. You can't do that
if you're being fair. Hundred Greens, same thing. I think one day
will be a consistent part of agood big league rotation. He's got an
(15:26):
absolute electric arm. Say which youwant about how he's pitched so far this
year. He leads baseball in strikeoutsper nine innings. He might be a
guy who pitches in an All StarGame or two. He might have good
postseason performances. And yet if hedoes those things, he will not have
lived up to the hype. Youhear this all the time. They've been
(15:48):
over hyped, didn't live up toit. The hype isn't their fault.
Elie de la Cruz didn't write Imight be the best player in baseball one
day. Other people did. HunterGreen didn't doubt himself as potential face of
the league a magazine did. Ifthose things do happen, awesome. The
(16:11):
odds of those things happening not great, Not great for anybody. I mean
if you watched. And again,I'm not comparing La de la Cruz and
Hunter Green to Lebron James, butI always use the live up to the
hype talking point as a reason ora way to talk about Lebron. If
I would have said in two thousandand three when he was coming out of
(16:32):
high school, like, all right, here's what's gonna happen with Lebron.
He's gonna do this, and he'sgonna do this. He's going to be
the face of the league. He'sgonna score more points than anybody in history.
He's gonna win four rings, he'sgoing to be a multiple time Olympic
gold medalist. He's going to becompared to Michael Jordan. You would have
said, there's no way that couldhappen. It should be celebrated that that
has happened, because he as talentedas we knew he was when he was
(16:53):
a kid. That was the oddswere against those things happening, against those
things happening with Hunter Green and Elliede la Cruz. So the measuring stick
shouldn't be what was said about thembefore they got here. The measuring sticks
should be progress they make. Howthey compare against pictures of the same age
or in Ellie's case, a positionplayer or a shortstop of the same age.
(17:17):
How much are they helping the team, how much are they getting better?
Like I keep using the fifty startbenchmark. Hunter's made fifty. Let's
see what he's like through seventy fivestarts, which would put him close to
September of this year. Let's seewhat kind of picture we're talking about after
one hundred starts with Ellie de laCruz. Let's see what he's like by
the end of this season. Let'ssee what the numbers look like in August.
(17:37):
Let's see what type of player we'rewatching. I'm already seeing advanced patients.
I'm seeing him make some adjustments.By all accounts, he's working harder.
Measure the player against the player, measure the player against peers. Measure
the player by how much they're helpingthe team. Do not measure the player
by the height that accompanied them whenthey first got to the big leagues,
(18:00):
because if you do that, theplayer will fail. It is impossible for
Hunter Green to live up to thathype. It is impossible for Elie dela
Cruz to live up to that hype. And if they do, who's going
to be unhappy? Chances are thosethings aren't going to happen. You are
welcome to tell me that I'm wrong. All I want Hunter Green to do
(18:22):
is be consistent and be reliable. He's not that yet. All I want
Ellie Dela Cruz to do is tocontinue to get better. That is happening.
If either guy ends up being anAll Star this season, awesome.
If either guy ends up being consideredamong the best at their position, awesome.
If either of those guys ends upwinning postseason awards, awesome. They're
(18:48):
not going to live up to thehype. That sounds harsh, It's not.
It's realistic. Three thirty, ESPNfifteen thirty Local Sports Headlines. Tony
mentioned to me something that I don'tthink we've ever talked about on this show.
I'm about to do it and talkabout it again next on ESPN fifteen
thirty. ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati'ssports station. An hour from now,
(19:15):
we're giving away Aerosmith tickets. TarenHave we come up with a way to
give away the Aerosmith tickets one pair? Are we going to do? My
idea? You want to do?See how many Aerosmith songs I can name
in twenty seconds? Yes? Okay, all right? What did the four
thirty four to thirty three and thenfive three, five thirty three? Is
are going to be guests the Foot. You know, I wanted to be
(19:38):
Guests the Foot, but every timewe play Guest the Foot, people people
in this building get mad at me. I have friends in my life.
The last time we played Guess theFoot, I look at my phone,
which I do less frequently during theshow, and I guess the foot.
Huh. Thanks thanks for the photo. Confidence pal, all right. Four
to thirty three Terren's game will playthat Aerosmith tickets coming up. Sports headlines
(20:03):
are a service of Kelsey. Eachever Lahoma of lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed
credit approval from their family to yoursfor lifekelseyshev dot com Off day for the
Reds. They are home tomorrow night, first of three against Mike Trout and
the Angels six forty tomorrow evening, with Nick Lidolo getting the ball for Cincinnati
on the heels of his spectacular twentytwenty four Red's debut. Left Tyler Anderson
(20:26):
will throw for the Halos, firstof a three game set. Reds coming
off a three and three road trip, won the first three, lost the
last three. I mentioned this beforeXavier gets a priority target. Dante Maddox,
junior re guard who started his collegebasketball career at cal State Fullerton and
then spent the last two years atToledo is coming to play for Sean Miller.
(20:48):
He will have one season of eligibilityremaining. He is a terrific outside
shooter, made nearly forty five percentof his threes two seasons ago for the
Rockets, and then a shade overforty percent of threes last year at Toledo,
averaging just over fifteen and a halfpoints per game. UC made it
official Connor Hickman and Arrington Page, both transferring to UC. Hickman from Bradley,
(21:11):
Page from or Hickman from Bradley,Page from USC, like I said
that incorrectly, I don't know whatelse we have, any big Bengals news,
any big Bengals No. Okay, yesterday was big in the world of
women's college basketball here and in theworld of girls high school basketball here,
(21:32):
where those two things have often notmerged for the programs in town where the
elite players usually go play somewhere else. D Alexander, two time Ohio miss
basketball at Purcell, is going togo play for Katrina Merriweather at the University
of Cincinnati. Now, I willadmit to you that as somebody who since
(21:57):
I was a kid has lived anddied. You see football and basketball.
I've paid I've paid attention to thewomen's basketball program from the periphery. We'll
put it to you that way.But you know, I mean, if
you care about the school, ifyou care about sports in town, it's
(22:18):
fun when all the programs are good, I believe, at least, and
it would be need if you seebasketball on the women's side was better.
And if Xavier's women's basketball program, which in the late two thousands was competing
nationally where to be better. We'llsay the same about NKU, which was
going through a coaching change right now, would be terrific. But I think
what is undeniable is the women's game. The women's college game in this country
(22:44):
has never been more popular, It'snever been higher profile. We've obviously all
watched the Caitlin Clark phenomenon play out. The latest development there, aside from
my former coworker being creepy on her, is she's getting a shoe deal that's
going to pay her twenty million bucks. And awesome for Kaitlyn Clark. But
you know, I mentioned the semifinal game in the final four between Yukon
(23:06):
and Iowa. Every sports fan inmy orbit, in my life was watching
that women's college basketball game. Sothe sport is ascending, and you might
argue it's peaking. It's going tobe interesting to see how many people who
just paid attention to Caitlyn Clark stickaround for next season. Maybe many do,
(23:26):
maybe some do. I don't know, but I think it goes without
saying that interest is at an alltime high nationally in women's college basketball and
maybe as an extension women's basketball, and that's terrific. And you might be
shaking your head, going, youknow, it's just not my jam,
and that's okay. What's undeniable isthere are more people watching and paying attention
(23:48):
than ever before. And so whatgreat timing for the UC women's program where
interest in the sport is increasing, and now the program has landed, by
all accounts, a top five toten recruit in the country and she's from
(24:11):
here and they're playing in the Bigtwelve. That is a tremendous get.
But it's also a tremendous opportunity forthat program to capitalize on perhaps a generational
player, but also really tap intowhat's happening in this country is in regards
to women's college basketball, where thesport is popular and growing and there's more
(24:33):
interest to more people watching and morepeople talking about it, and more people
debating, and more people going togames, and at precisely that time,
at precisely this juncture in the sport'shistory, a local school gets not just
a very good player, but somebodywho was offered a scholarship by some of
the biggest programs in the sport. And she's from here. That's awesome,
(24:57):
it's great for d congres gratulations toher. Excuse me, congratulations to her.
But it really allows that program tocapitalize not just on getting a top
five to ten player based on whichrecruiting service you follow, but also like
ride this wave of popularity. Doesthat mean that suddenly twelve thousand people plus
(25:18):
are going to be going to UCwomen's basketball games. My guess is probably
not. But is there maybe goingto be a little bit more interest and
in turn more people that do gobecause of the combination of terrific local player,
huge national recruiting profile, and justthe overall popularity of the sport.
(25:42):
We'll see it's cool, it's neat. I mean, for I was looking
at social media when we got offthe air yesterday and for a while people
were sending tweets about a women's collegebasketball program in town and me partial to
the Bearcats, thrilled for UC,but had that happened at Xavier, that's
awesome too, Like, that's that'sgreat, and it's great at this particular
(26:04):
juncture where again, the women's gamehas has never been bigger eighteen away from
four o'clock. You know the women'sgame is big when I'm I turn on
the shows where they yell at eachother about sports in the morning and they're
they're screaming about women's hoops. Thatis awesome. That is awesome locally,
it is awesome nationally. I dohave some things to say about the Greg
(26:26):
Doyle thing, which we had somefun with yesterday. We'll do that coming
up in the four o'clock hour.Five point three seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty are our phone numbers,Our lines are open. We'll grab
some phone calls as student as soonas I can make the mouse work.
I want the Bengals to draft atackle, which one I could frankly go
(26:47):
back and forth. Who's going tobe available. They're going to get the
chance. I think to draft totackle as a very clear consensus first round
grade. I want to tackle insteadof the defensive tackle or the tight end,
and I want to go tackle versustight end. Next on ESPN fifteen
thirty their top of the hour update, if you want to know what's going
on in the NFL. The Patriotshave the third overall pick. They may
(27:11):
trade it, they may not. There you go, you asked, I
had an answer. We've had gooddraft stuff this week. We'll have more
between now and next Thursday. ButJoe Goodberry was with us yesterday afternoon.
If you missed that conversation, hewas terrific as usual. Same for Dame
Brugler from The Athletic, and wehave talked often about how much we love
(27:34):
his draft guide. Both interviews available. You could listen to them on the
iHeartRadio app. Also find them onmy page at ESPN fifteen thirty dot com
or the podcast page of ESPN fifteenthirty dot com, podcast of our show,
or a service of Long Neck SportsGrill. There's no better place to
watch all the baseball action, especiallyoutside on a nice warm night outdoor pat
(28:00):
at each of the Long Next locations. Wilder Hebron and rich Wood. We're
broadcasting on Thursday next week before theDraft from Long Necks and Wilder. James
or pen Is going to join memost definitely looking forward to that. I've
settled in on wanting one of thetackles in Round one. Now I'll do
(28:22):
what so many of us are goingto do. If they take BJ,
if they take brock Bowers, noone's no one's going to have an issue
with that, right, I mean, no one's going to have a major
issue with they take the best tightend in the draft. No one's going
to lose their mind if they endup taking Byron Murphy the second who I
(28:45):
almost called BJ. No one's gonnahave a face value in a vacuum.
Any issue with that, We willtalk about some of the players they maybe
could have taken. I'm settling inon tackle. And this is maybe admittedly
a clumsy explanation as to why.But if I said the Bengals are trying
to replace Joanah Williams now in theshort term, it just may be simple.
(29:06):
Trent Brown's gonna be the guy,or they could draft somebody and maybe
that player gets a chance to challengeCordell Volson at guard, or maybe that
player gets a chance to challenge forthe starting job at right tackle and Trent
Brown ends up being a backup.I don't know. We have to see
who they draft first, but they'rethey're they're replacing Joana Williams, and they're
certainly looking for someone long term that'sgonna be the starting right tackle for a
(29:30):
few years, which is what JonahWilliams was. Obviously, Jonah played left
tackle and then was moved to right. If the Bengals drafted in round one
a tackle that played right tackle forthe next five years, say they he
(29:52):
was good enough that they picked upthe fifth year option and that player ended
up playing to the same level Williamsdid kind of maybe outside you know that
first season where he was thrown tothe Wolves in twenty twenty obviously didn't practice
or played the previous year because ofthe injury, went through the weird COVID
(30:12):
training camp, no preseason games. But if if the Bengals drafted a player
who played at Jonah Williams level fromtwenty twenty one, twenty two to twenty
three, understanding that Jonah Williams playedleft and right tackle, if they took
a guy with the eighteenth pick whoplayed at that level, Would you be
okay with that? I think Iwould be. Jonah Williams is not an
(30:36):
elite player by any stretch. Goodsolid player who knows what happens if he
gets a chance to play that firstseason when he got hurt during OTAs.
But if they took a tackle eighteenthoverall, whether it's any one of the
guys that are being talked about aspotential first rounders, I'll let the tape
heads argue over the nuances of eachof these guys. But they they took
(31:00):
a tackle and that guy played likeJohanah Williams did over the last three years.
Is that okay? You might wantmore? I wanted more from JOHNA.
Williams, but I viewed him asgood player. He never played like
the eleventh overall pick, which iswhat he was in twenty nineteen. But
good player right He was the bestoffensive lineman on a Super Bowl team.
(31:23):
He was a starting left tackle ona team that went to the AFC Championship
Game, and he was a startingright tackle last year for a team that,
despite all of the injuries, wonnine games. Not a great player,
good if Johanah Williams would have resigned with the Bengals this year,
most of us would have said,Okay, I wonder what that comes at
(31:44):
the expense of but he's back.Fine. So if they took a tackle
with the eighteenth overall pick who playedlike Johanah Williams, okay, let's say
they took a tight end and let'sjust say, for example, it's Brock
Bowers. Now many have said brockBowers is the best tight end prospect to
(32:07):
come out in quite a while, better than any of the guys last year.
That may be. Let's say brockBauers played, they took him with
the eighteenth overall pick, and heplayed like Jermaine Gresham. By the way,
Jermaine Gresham in his time as aBengal five seasons, averaged fifty six
(32:28):
catches per year, averaged almost fivehundred and fifty yards per year, average
five touchdowns per year. And didit, you know, in an offense
where he was never really going tobe the main focal point. Did it
with the exception of his rookie year, while having Andy Dalton throw him the
ball. And granted Jermaine Gresham wastaken much later in the draft, was
(32:52):
the twenty first overall pick if I'mnot mistaken, But if you draft Brock
Bowers and plays like Jermaine Gresham, that feels like a letdown, doesn't it.
I mean, I think the answeris yes, because then I'm know
Jermaine Gresham fan. But while hewas here, there was this constant desire,
(33:14):
highly expressed, often expressed desire tofind someone who's better. That's why
so many of us were banging onthe table the year they drafted Tyler Eifert.
Want a different, better tight end, go to tight ends, but
gotta find somebody who can do more. So I guess for me, I
want a tackle, a starting offensivetackle, in the first round, because
(33:38):
even if that player doesn't play likea first rounder, we're gonna go.
You know what, that guy wasgood enough. The floor is probably pretty
high, and who knows, theceiling may be really high. I feel
like if you draft the tight endin the first round, especially in this
(33:58):
offense, where the tight end, regardless of what happens with T Higgins down
the road, is probably never reallygoing to be a focal point. It's
it's gonna feel like that player underwhelms. I could. I'm guessing for what
the Bengals want to do with theirtight end. And I know there are
a lot of folks that could say, you can move Bowers all over the
place, and he looks like there'severy reason to believe that guy has a
(34:22):
chance to be a terrific player inthe NFL. What we've done with tight
end, though, is we instantlyproject what Travis Kelcey does and what Rob
Gronkowski did, and that's really notfair. Really isn't fair. There haven't
been a ton of uber uber, uber productive tight ends taken in the first
(34:45):
round of the draft this century. Most of them put up numbers that look
like Jermaine Gresham's. So I lookat it from the standpoint of floor baseline,
like what would would would like abaseline career or at least career under
the rookie contract for a right tackleyou take in the first round kind of
(35:07):
look like Jonah Williams worst case, probably hopefully without the injuries. If that's
the worst it is, I thinkwe're gonna go, Okay, that's a
good offensive lineman. Hopefully he's betterand you could down the road build an
elit offensive line. But if thebaseline expectation is well the numbers that I
(35:30):
just gave you, he's going tocatch, you know, about fifty passes
a year, which there's nothing wrongwith the tight end who can catch fifty
passes a year is going to haveabout five hundred yards a year, which
there's nothing wrong with a tight endwho gives you five hundred yards per year?
Is that worth using a first roundpick on? I don't think the
answer is yes. The defensive tackleis maybe a different story. But if
(35:54):
I'm making it about those two positionsand brock Bowers has gone by eighteen,
and then this is not even adiscussion. But if worst case, I
get someone who's Jonah Williams with theeighteenth pick. Okay, that worked out
for the Bengals, and he wasthe eleventh overall pick and he never really
played to the level. Eleventh overallpick. Now, there were some other
guys they could have taken later inthe draft that went that had to get
(36:16):
him at eleven. Who knows whathappens. I just I feel like there's
a better chance for a tackle toplay to the billing to make you feel
good about the value they give theteam at eighteen, then you're gonna get
with a tight end, we'll see. By the way, this isn't an
awful place to be in. LikeI was talking about this with a buddy
(36:37):
of mine last night, I thinkthe Bengals have a chance to get to
the super Bowl this year. Isay that having no idea who they're taking
in the draft. I say thathaving no idea which positions the'll address over
the first two days when they havefour picks, I feel like the Bengals
can play for the whole thing nextseason. And there's almost no scenario that
(36:58):
I can envision where I'm gonna walkaway from the draft and go, well,
windows closed. They can't win thisyear. Like so they're they're in.
They're in a bit of if youif you simply talk about it through
a twenty twenty four filter, they'rein a bit of a position of luxury.
Here. The most important player onthe team is getting healthy. Hopefully
he's on the field for seventeen gamesor at least all the games that matter.
(37:21):
Next season, they should be eliteon the outside behind a league gaverage
offensive line, a little bit moreexplosiveness in the running game. They've got
to get better on defense. ButI'm not even sure the drafting a defensive
tackle in round one is going totake a defense that right now has questions
(37:42):
and suddenly eliminates many of those questions. We'll see it is going to be
really interesting again broadcasting from a longnecks a week from today. All right,
your phone calls are coming up fiveone, three, seven, four,
nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixsix, seven zero two three,
seven seven six. I am alwaysfascinated when there's a lot of outrage being
(38:07):
aimed at somebody that we want anapology from. I'll explain next four o'clock
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. This is Sports Center. I'm Doug Brown.
Heat guard Jimmy Butler kept playing lastnight after hurting his right knee,
(38:28):
but now ESPN's Adrian Warzanowski says thatknee will keep Butler out of action for
several weeks. The Heat hosts theBulls tomorrow night, to the eighth seed
in the East. With the unprecedentedpopularity now of women's college basketball, what
would happen if they allowed one anddone players, Yukon coach Gino Ariama,
Well, it depends whether you wantthe game to grow or whether you want
(38:50):
to kill it. If you wantto kill it, then let the kids
leave after freshman year. On themen's side, it's become transactional. Everybody's
a free agent. Everybody's a mercenary. Gino Arima on unsportsmanlike LSU guard Hailey
van Lift will transfer to TCU forher final season of eligibility. Van Lyth
averaged twelve points and four assists agame during her one season with the Tigers.
(39:13):
Former Ravens running back JK. Dobbinssigns a one year deal with the
Chargers, and its official. TheArizona Coyotes will move to Salt Lake City
for next season. For the lasttwo years, they played at Arizona State
in a five thousand seed arena.Feeling great starts with a great shave,
and great shaves start with Barbisol shavingCream. That's Barbisol's shaving cream, an
(39:36):
American classic for over one hundred years. Close Shave America, Close Shave.
Barbisol found Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. There you go. I don't know how
to read clock, so we arelate seven after four. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty on Molegger. Appreciate youlistening. Hopefully you're having as good of
(39:59):
a Thursday as we are, we'regiving away more Aerosmith tickets at four thirty
three. We're gonna We're gonna putme under the microscope in ways that we
have put Tarren Bland and Austin Elmore. That coming up in twenty five minute.
If you think you know a lotabout Aerosmith, you have a chance
to win tickets at four thirty three. Also Brenneman and Jones. Yesterday Brennanman
(40:20):
and Jones was not about baseball.Yesterday, Brenniman and Jones was about like
get blood work done or something. It was about getting like colonoscopy and doing
things that you should do. Bythe way, very good tips from Marty
and Tracy. But it just itwasn't about baseball, which is why we
say Brennanman and Jones sometimes about baseball. That is at four fifty I have
(40:45):
a picture I bet you would wantthe Reds to trade for I bet I
bet that coming up in a littlebit. And we were making fun of
Greg Doyle yesterday, which I enjoyeddoing. Greg used to co host with
me for seven glorious months way backin two thousand and seven. He is
(41:06):
being chewed up and spit out bythe outrage cycle and some questions about that.
But you know what we are goingto do first. We are going
to take the sports talk radio handbookand throw it away. Now, there
are radio consultants, radio consultants whomost of whom have never been behind a
microphone before, but they will say, never start the hour by taking a
(41:30):
phone call. So if you area radio consultant listening to this, I'm
sorry, We're gonna violate your rule. That's all I'm gonna say about radio
consultants. Bob is calling from Florence. Bob, thanks for hanging on.
How are you, hey? Mom? What's going on? I'm sitting here
(41:52):
enjoying a Thursday afternoon on radio studio. How about yourself? I'm sitting outside
of Weather's great And uh I tolda few minutes ago I spoke with Chad,
I think a couple of weeks back, and I told him that my
wife and I are moving, anduh, we're we're a couple of weeks
(42:16):
closer to it now than we werethen. So are Bowling Green, Kentucky?
Wow? Any any specific reason oryou just love the Corvette Museum?
Well that and bye bye, myson is in Nashville. My wife has
three kids in Nashville, and wealso have a grandson in Bowling Green.
(42:39):
And so, you know, justa little thank you, buddy, thank
you, and uh hey, Iwas going to tell you too. There
are also radio consultants out there thatwill tell you that on a call in
show, you should take at leastten phone calls an hour. Do thing?
(43:00):
Is that what they say? Well, I mean, you know that's
what I say. I'm sure,I'm sure that's what some radio consultants will
One day, I am gonna dolike two entire segments on things I've heard
radio consultants suggest that'd be good.Yeah, yeah, And then you know
what I might do, Bob,one days, I might become a radio
(43:20):
consultant. That might be my secondarycareer. A radio consultant. Yeah.
Do you know what? A consultantof any type wouldn't be bad because you
really don't have much skin in thegame at that point, and you know,
you can just throw ideas out therethat sometimes you won't even think that
makes sense, but somebody else willthink that's the greatest idea I ever heard.
(43:45):
Many I'm probably in trouble for sayingthis. Many many years ago,
many years ago, a radio consultantcame in and looked at Lance McAllister and
I and said, you know, you probably really shouldn't talk about the reds.
So from that day forward, I'vetaken radio consultants with a very large
(44:06):
grain of salt. Well, letme ask you this. I'm sure at
that point they weren't very good, correct they were. This is like probably
fourteen fifteen. They weren't great. And you know what I mean. Of
course that makes no sense to anybody, But that's the only reason it would
make a little bit of sense.But I mean, no, that's I
(44:30):
don't know. So were you wereyou calling? Were you calling to say
farewell? Were you calling to announceyour departure? What are you moving?
No? Well, as far aswind moo, I'm every time I put
a date out there, it doesn'twork. Oh, but I would say
we'll be gone by the end ofthe month. Wow, well that's less
(44:52):
than two weeks away. Yeah, probably a little before that even But what
I did tell Tarran earlier was thatwith the Internet and things, now they
and I know Mike calls you allthe time from California. So although I
won't be as frequent as Mike.Certainly, I do plan to still give
you guys an occasional ring and letyou know how the Bowling Green Hot Rods
(45:13):
are doing. Oh please do no. I mean, you obviously can listen
to us on the iHeartRadio app whereveryou are, and uh yes, and
so we we expect that you remainin our audience. You've been one of
our most loyal listeners, and youcall on a frequent enough basis that it
makes me happy to hear your voice. And I hope, I hope that
continues, because I enjoy chatting withyou, specifically Bob about UC basketball.
(45:38):
You see basketball and Saint Louis Cardinalbaseball. Saint Louis Cardinal baseball, of
course, and on the occasion thatI bring up hockey, you usually chime
in with something there too. You'regonna you're gonna live closer to an NHL
team, You'll be by the Predators, so you gotta be happy. You
know. When the Predators came totown, and this was back in the
early nineties, I got a letterfrom the Predators because I had communicated with
(46:02):
them about a year before they moved, and I'd be interested in doing their
PA really and they told me that, hey, we're going to hold tryouts
and you know what, we wantyou to come down. Wow. Well,
before any of that happened, thePredators hired a guy named Bill Cody
who was very big in country musicand very big in Nashville in particular,
(46:28):
and he was their PA guy forgosh, probably ten twelve years, I
guess. And so although I wasnext out of that gig, I did
become the spotter for the PA guyfor the Titans for ten years. That's
pretty good. So oh yeah itwas. It was a lot of fun
and I had a great time doingit. But listen, though, the
main reason I called yeah was tothank you for everything. And I told
(46:51):
tarn you guys have been have beengreat and I've really enjoyed listening to you
over the years, and like Isay, I won't stop doing that,
but anyway, just just thanks forall the time you've given me. So
I realized, well, that's that'sthat's very kind of you. That makes
us feel good because uh, youknow, it's it stands the reason that
if if folks weren't listening it,it really wouldn't make any sense for us
(47:14):
to be doing what we're doing. But you've since day one, you've been
a loyal listener. You've come tosome of our shows. You brought me
a Tennessee Titans playoff game tal fromwhen the Bengals beat in that I still
have. And UH, and you'realways uh. You're always willing to call
in with something funny to say, you're something thoughtful to say, and I
do appreciate it, and I hopeit continues in your new home and Bowling
(47:35):
Green. Thanks a lot, allright, Bob, Thank you very much,
good luck, Thank you all right, Bob. I almost went to
Western Kentucky University. Uh, andI didn't. I went to Ohio.
You did you go to b G? I want to. I was.
I was going to go to WesternKentucky. My mom wanted me to go
to Western Kentucky because from Taylor Millyou could pay in state, And so
(48:00):
we go down there, and Iwanted to go to UD for one reason.
UD they had a campus radio stationand you could start. Nothing else
about the school appealed to me.Didn't care. I knew nothing about really
going to college whatever, and soI go to UD. Had no idea
how expensive it was. I didn'teven know it was a Catholic school,
so the only thing I noticed isthey had a campus radio station. I
(48:22):
went and talked to the guy atthe campus radio station. He's like,
yeah, you could start day one, So okay, somebody was going to
have to beat that. And soI go to Western Kentucky because my mom
made me go to some stupid collegefair. But the pamphlet had the campus
radio station on it from Western Kentucky. So I'm like, all right,
(48:42):
here we go. Let's go downto Bowling Green and we'll check out the
Corvette Museum and we go down andwe're doing the campus towards really hilly hilltoppers,
right, and finally I go,can we go to the campus radio
station? And the guy says,as a matter of fact, we can.
And I know the faculty advisor tothe campus radio station. Awesome,
(49:04):
so they grab him and now hereI am with these other groups of people
who are going to go study somethingbetter than communications, and I'm at the
campus radio station and the guy proceedsto explain, yes, you could be
on the air, but you haveto be a junior. You have to
you have to satisfy some coursework first. And I thought, and to this
day. Think that is the dumbestpolicy of all time. And I looked
(49:27):
at my mom and said, we'redone here. And then we went to
Cracker Barrel, I ate some pancakes, and we drove back to Northern Kentucky.
So by the way, Yeah,so that was my time in Bowling
Green, almost going to Western kentI knew I didn't care the rest of
the tour, and like, wecan leave now, Like, well,
don't you want to see the dorm? No? What about the football stadium?
(49:49):
No, what about the campus life? Don't care? Four and a
half hours away to wait till I'ma junior to be on the air.
You kidding me? Uh huh chreit's a lovely school. Came close to
go. When I say it camethis, I think I got accepted,
but I didn't go anyway. Bestof luck to Bob. Seventeen minutes after
four o'clock radio consultant will not likethat story. This radio show started.
(50:16):
I had a partner, Greg Doyle. Greg Doyle's part of a big national
conversation. I have a question nextpole questions here in a bit that we
have to get to and Aerosmith ticketswe're giving away. We're giving away Aerosmith
tickets if you know more about Aerosmiththan I do, and I like your
chances. That coming up in justabout ten minutes plus Brendman and Jones maybe
(50:38):
today on baseball. We played thisaudio yesterday and we had some fun with
it, And since yesterday, I'vehad a lot of folks ask me,
well, what about your boy? What about your former on air partner?
So for those of you who don'tknow, we'll play the audio here in
the second Greg Doyle the columnist atthe Indianapolis Star when he was living in
(51:00):
Cincinnati. When I started as afull time on air personality, I was
partnered with Greg and we did theshow from May of two thousand and seven
through the end of the year, and then Greg moved on and I continued,
and I think since then most wouldagree the show has been worse.
And Greg, we had fun together. We had a blast doing the show
(51:22):
together. We didn't really know eachother going in. And I'll be very
painfully transparent with you, Greg andI are not necessarily close to this day
in the aftermath of that show, and that's no one's fault. It's just
it's how it is. His lifestyleis different than mine, and that's not
a criticism of him, and itjust we're not I wouldn't call us friends.
(51:49):
Years ago, the Bengals played theColts and we asked him to come
on the air with us and hesaid no, And that's his prerogative.
So I'm going to talk about him, but I'm not really talking about him
through the lens of him being mybuddy. Did a show together. I
enjoyed it. I think he's atalented writer. I thought he had promise
as a host. I don't agreewith many of the things that he writes
or says, but I couldn't saythat I agree with everything that everyone or
(52:15):
that anybody else writes or says,if that makes sense. So anyway,
I just wanted to preface what we'reabout to do by saying that, like
I've had some people metally going tostick up for your boy, I mean
he's not my boy, full honesty. Like I have talked to Greg in
probably ten years, and that's justthat's okay. A lot of people that
(52:36):
I used to work with that Ihaven't talked with in ten years. It
doesn't mean I hate them, itjust we're not friends, not everybody's your
friend, certainly in this business. So Greg has incurred the wrath of many
for the exchange are about to play, which is creepy. I think that's
the best way to put it.And the audio doesn't do the entire exchange
(52:59):
justice, but tarn during the themedia, the introduction, the media availability
for Caitlin Clark being drafted by theIndiana Fever, and obviously Greg being a
local sports columnist there he was there, so she's answering questions. And Greg,
who has I think, by hisown admission, a peculiar personality and
(53:22):
at least a slightly weird way ofdoing things, has drawn national and frankly
international headlines for this following exchange.Hi, Caitlin, Greg Doyle indie star,
real quick. I'll let me dothis like you like that, I
(53:45):
like that you're here, like thatyou're here. I do that in my
family after every game. So okay, we'll start doing it to me and
we'll get along just fine. Soquestion is okay? So comes off?
Was creepy? Right? Comes off? Comes off as maybe a little sexist,
(54:06):
maybe a lot sexists would would hehave asked the first round draft choice
of the Indiana Pacers, that whathe did was the heart sign that she
does after games that's been shown onState farm ads or every time they show
her after game, the gesture shemakes to her family. He did that
to her and then he said whathe said, and we made fun of
it yesterday. The audio is creepyand you are being reasonable if you go,
(54:30):
well, would he have done that? Would you have asked that to
the first round draft choice of theIndianapolis cult so, the Indianapolis Pacers?
Would he have done that to amale athlete? Of very fair questions?
And so, at worst or atits most benign, it's a little awkward,
it's creepy, and at worst youcould say it's reflective of sexist attitudes
(54:53):
that female athletes and females in thewomen in the media. I should say
that women in the media have toovercome all very very fair and so Greg
apologized on his Twitter feed and thenhe wrote a column where he basically called
himself out, apologized, talked aboutneeding to do better. And it's up
(55:15):
to you as to whether or notyou want to read it, whether you
want to believe he's being sincere andand do what you want with it.
I've read people that go, well, now he's just trying to benefit from
this by getting clicks. Well,he's a columnist like me. Like,
if if I did something stupid,or if I did something to offend people,
(55:35):
well guess what I would do.I would use the studio I'm in
right now to address what I hadjust done or the people that I had
hurt. And that's just because that'sthis is my forum and the column is
Greg's. It's up to you asto whether or not you want to read
the column. Many have, somehave not. But what I'm always interested
in when it comes to things likethis is, uh, when do we
(55:55):
let it die? Right? Like, Okay, he did what he did.
He's being just dragged across the internet. Every day the Internet picks a
villain. Yesterday it was Greg andyou might say he rightly so has been
cast as a villain. He's writtenhis column, he has shown some contrition.
(56:17):
I'm always curious when we have thingslike this where we demand the apology,
we demand the explanation, and wehad demand some degree of accountability once
we get the apology, once weget the acknowledgment that I was wrong,
is that ever enough? Like I'veseen folks suggest Greg should be fired,
(56:43):
really should lose their job over that, really, or their credential should be
taken away. Well, really,we're going to do that too, Like,
isn't there something to be said aboutseeing if he really learned his lesson
by allowing him to cover the Indianafever and cover Caitlin Clark again? And
(57:09):
by the way, it's worth mentioningyou heard the laughter in the background.
I'm sure a lot of the peoplelaughing nervously awkward, but whatever laughing were
journalists. By no way am Iexcusing the approach which I don't think he
had any malice in his heart.I don't think. I just think he
was reflective of his kind of bizarrepersonality. And you know, if you
(57:32):
have a bizarre personality, sometimes youhave to go, you know what,
This is not a time to bebizarre. I'm not sure that was the
place or time to be bizarre. But once the acknowledgment that hey, I
did this and it was wrong ismade, and it's been made, Like
I'm looking at the Daily Mail hereand there's pictures of Greg with his children?
Is that what we do now?Like I always feel like whenever somebody
(57:57):
gets dragged into the outrage cycle.Somebody is the Internet villain that what we
demand is never enough. The apology, We say we want it, but
it's never really enough, like wewant that pound a flash, like really
Greg should lose his job over thisstrikes me as an overreach. I don't
even know that there has to beany sort of like punishment, Like I
(58:19):
mean, there's a part of methat thinks public shame is kind of enough.
He's gonna have to wear this. This is part of his public reputation,
at least for the short term andpossibly probably maybe for the rest of
his career. And he's going tofigure out a way to deal with the
Indiana fever and deal with players inthat locker room who are on their own.
They say, I'm not going totalk to this guy like I'm always
(58:40):
and it's not just Greg, I'malways whenever. Somebody is just they're the
Internet villain. We cast them asthe bad guy for the day, and
they do something and they make theapology like usually for me, the apology
and the show of contrition or theattempt to make it right, And I
don't know what the attempt to makeit right should look like here. But
usually for me, it's like allright, cool, move on to something
(59:00):
else, which many of us do, like no scandal lasts like it used
to ten years ago, because ourattention spans aren't long enough. We just
move on to other things. Butwith this particular instance here and again like,
I'm not I'm not coming into thedefense, I'm not even defending them.
I'm not even wrapping my arm aroundmy guy here because Greg and I
(59:22):
aren't particularly close, and that's noone's fault. It's just a way of
life. But I've gotten I don'tknow ten to twelve tweets about this,
two emails that I'm looking at rightnow, been asked about it at the
radio station today by co workers, and like my first reaction was to laugh
at Greg being creepy. My secondreaction was, that's a really tough place
(59:44):
to put Caitlin Clark in, whodoesn't know you. Third, I don't
think he would do that to amale athlete, or a male coach or
a male sports executive. Fourth, yeah, man, I do think there's
a legitimate fight that women athletes andwomen coaches are still facing when it comes
to how they're covered and how they'retalked about and how they're treated, and
I think we've come a long way, but we're not where we need to
(01:00:06):
be yet. But okay, thosethings get acknowledged, those things get apologize
for. Now, what do wewant is the apology ever good enough?
Is the public show of accountability evergood enough? And usually it seems to
me like the answer to those questionsare well, No. Twenty six away
(01:00:29):
from five o'clock. On a farless serious note, we're gonna give away
Aerosmith tickets, now, Tarren, how are we doing this? We're gonna
play the game where we can seeif somebody can name more Aerosmith songs in
twenty seconds than I can. Well, you're not supposed to give it to
them, but now people can justlook it up. Oh I gave it
away, all right? Well, very good call by you, Terran.
(01:00:53):
I screwed up the game. Itotally screwed up the game. Should we
still play it? I mean, that's one of you who I have I
have thought of right now? Soall right, the easiest giveaway of all
time if you want to win Aerosmithtickets five, one, three, seven,
four to come in the back center. I totally screwed that up?
(01:01:15):
Do I have to apologize? Now? Is that going to be good enough?
Hey? Do I do? Ihave to go into training right?
Five three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty eight six six seven oh
two three seven seven six. Ifyou want to win Aerosmith tickets and you

Nineteen. Yeah, they were allthey thought that they might be able
to catch Lassie. And they don'thave to because they already have. They
already have, all right, soit was nineteen, not twenty nine.
I will make sure I'll write thoseguys a note. Very good and of
(01:12:04):
course. You know, while I'mon hold there and I listened to the
little jingle from since He's Shirts.Yeah, I was on the Uncle Al
Show. You were twice? Really? Yes? How was it? I
don't know. I think it waslike five Were you there? Were you
(01:12:25):
there reluctantly or were you there willingly? Well, I'm pretty sure I was
there willingly, although I'm one ofthe things that I think I remember as
Captain Wendy was a very nice no. You know, my my late former
mother in law used to work atChannel nine. She had some not so
flattering things to say about Uncle Al. I see, Yeah, well I
(01:12:51):
don't. I don't remember that,and I had forgotten. Well, I
hadn't forgotten. I guess I neverput together you and Mike McConnell. How
about that? What about us proudbeauty alums? Uh, yeah, that's
right. And Eddie Fingers as well. Yeah about that bad I don't know
(01:13:12):
that we want to claim him.But uh, Mike McConnell. You know
how I got in my foot inthe door here, I do. Yeah.
I was a longtime caller for Iused to call Mike all the time.
Yeah. I started as Mike's internin nineteen ninety seven because he spoke
to a class at ud and whenhe was done, I walked up to
(01:13:34):
him and said, hey, canI be an intern? And that's back
when radio stations had interns, andthankfully he said, yes, yeah he
was. He was the best. For sure, he's still on the air.
I know he in the morning.I but it's not the same former.
Uh no, it's not. No, it's not. I like sometimes
(01:13:55):
sometimes I will get up early inthe morning, at like seven minutes after
five o'clock, just to hear Mikeat five oh seven in the five oh
seven in the morning, when youcould tell he he hasn't exactly gotten a
sleep out of his eye, soto speak. Right, Yeah, that's
right. And you forgot you mentionedthe Los Angeles Angels or the California Angels,
(01:14:19):
but you forgot the Los Angeles Angelsat Anaheim at Anaheim. Yeah,
I'm just gonna call him the CaliforniaAngels because geographically that's still not incorrect.
Right, that's right. Okay,Now here's my question. I have wondered,
and I have not heard anybody askthis question about the NFL draft.
(01:14:43):
Is brock Bowers worth moving up?I don't think so no to get I
don't think so no, because ifI've got a part with more draft capital,
I'm trying to address multiple positions, and I'm trying to draft a lot
of depth for a tight end likeI like Brock Bowers, and if he
were to be a Bengal, I'msure they would make good use of him.
But I'm not really interested. I'mnot interested in parting with what I
(01:15:08):
would have to give up in orderto trade up. I'm interested in trading
down, perhaps if one of thetackles is there, and adding you know,
to what ared a already a prettyenviable haul. But I'm not willing
to part with capital for something i'mnot desperate to get. You know,
if I could, if I couldstill get a first round tackle at eighteen,
I'll be happy to take that playerthat I don't have to give up
(01:15:28):
anything to get, instead of tradingcapital in order to get Brock Powers.
So, and here's the thing thatI look at when I when I think
about Brock Powers. I've heard peopletalk about how he's the best tight end
to come out in many years, how many tight ends have actually been paid?
(01:15:53):
All right, go ahead, Soin the long run, they may
not only saved money but also geta generational talent, no doubt, sure
at tight end. But I mean, I you know, are are they
gonna make use of that generational talent? Is he gonna put up generational talent
(01:16:15):
type numbers in this offense? Right? Right? I mean, you know,
people look at Gronk and Travis Kelcey, and those guys played with good
wide receivers. But I feel likeat times, certainly over the last couple
of years with Travis for sure, before after they traded Tyreek Hill, you
look at the numbers and they're somewhatinflated because there aren't there haven't been as
many well there's no target like JamarChase to throw to now there was when
(01:16:39):
Tyronk Hill was still in Kansas City. I just feel like tight end production.
If you look at good tight endproduction, like all those guys that
were in the final four last year, we're not players taken in the first
round. If I'm not mistaken, all those tight ends people talk about,
well, the final four teams inthe NFL all had cheat codes at tight
(01:17:02):
end. Well, Travis Kelcey waswas not a first round pick and and
his his production is absurd. MarkAndrews was not a first round pick.
Sam Laporta, who you could arguethe Bengals should have taken last year.
He was, he was, hewas he was a second rounder. It
could have gone in the first round. He was a first round Yeah year,
(01:17:24):
Who who am I blanking on theGeorge Kittle was not a first round
pick. So but he I thinkhe's the exception to the rule, isn't
he. I mean he's got they'vegot good wide receivers. Yeah, and
he still gets the ball. Yeah. No, But his his his his
production has been terrific. His productionhas been terrific and and inflated more so
(01:17:47):
because he was taken in the fifthround and they have weapons. They have
Deebo Samuel and they run the balland do all the things they do with
Christian McCaffrey and Ayuke's a very gooddeep target. I do think his his
statistical profile at times has been raisedby the fact that there haven't been as
many weapons in that San Francisco offenseas they had this past season. Well,
(01:18:12):
I just don't think that, youknow, I I hear what you're
saying that they need the still holes. Okay, that's great. But don't
they have eleven draft picks? Ten? Is it ten? Okay? So,
but do they do they have tenholes that they need to sell?
And I realized you move to thefuture, You've got to look to the
(01:18:34):
future always when you're drafting, sothat I thought that they had some capital
that they could afford to perhaps moveup maybe. But I mean, like,
like, let's just look at thefirst two days. They have four
picks, right, they have twothird rounders. Yeah, would you rather
part with one of those to takeBrock Powers or get a first round tackle,
(01:18:56):
a good defensive tackle, a widereceiver for the future, and some
interior offensive line depth. I thinkthat's part of it as well. Like
you might say, well, rightnow, the Bengals have five starters on
the offensive line, and that's that'sa fair assessment. Do we like their
depth? I don't think the answeris yes. And so you know,
even at that position we talk aboutlike a wide receiver draft short term depth,
(01:19:19):
but long term starters that should aplay on the offensive line as well,
where you know, thankfully this teamdealt with no major injuries on the
offensive line. Cody Ford had toplay here and there. But you know,
I think for the most part,it was the same seven, the
same five offensive linemen for all seventeengames. If that's not the case this
year and you've got to play someof those backups, I'm not sure any
(01:19:42):
of us are very confident in that. And so if if using the first
two days of the draft, Ican get maybe my tackle for the future
who can provide some depth, andan interior lineman for the future who could
provide some depth, and I canfind a three technique who can come in
and play and add to my widereceiver room. I view all of that
(01:20:02):
as more desirable than some variation ofthat with a tight end. And look,
Scott, if they draft Rock Powers, I'll find every reason why it
could work. He's the best tightend in the draft. According to every
analyst that I have listened to.He would be the best tight end in
last year's draft, which people thoughtwas historically deep. And so you can
never be upset at Joe Burrow havinga high end target. It's just for
(01:20:26):
me. I'm looking at I wantto build an elite offensive line one day,
and I don't think you could startthat process if you're not addressing tackle
in the first round of this ofthis draft. Yeah, well I was
curious about that, so I thoughti'd call and asked. It's always gonna
hear from you, Scott, thankyou. I just I feel like a
(01:20:49):
brock Bowers might be an insanely goodplayer and might put up huge numbers,
and if he's here, I thinkwe would all say that that dude has
a chance to be one of thepremiere offensive rookies in the entire sport,
one of the premier rookies in theentire sport if he's in Cincinnati. Number
One, they don't have a lotof good backups on the offensive line.
Number two, I want to buildany lead offensive line that's not gonna happen
(01:21:11):
via the draft. And I don'tthink it's gonna happen via the draft taking
a bunch of dudes later on.I mean, it could be dead wrong
about that. I also feel likeyou are willing to accept an offensive lineman
who doesn't play to the level ofa first rounder more than you're able to
accept like Jonah Williams again as aprimary example, would anybody balk at him
(01:21:34):
being on the team. No,did he play like a first round or
not? Really? If you draftedhis replacement and he played like Joanah Williams
in the first round. I thinkwe'd be okay with that. If you
took Brock Bauers in the first roundand he played like your average third rounder,
that those numbers would be fine, but you probably would say, well,
he didn't really play to the levelof a first round tight end.
(01:21:56):
I know that's the case because thelast time, or not the last time,
but in recent history when the Bengalshave drafted a tight end of the
first round, his numbers were fineand everybody wanted more. I don't think
we view tackles to the same lens. We're gonna talk FC Cincinnati next ESPN
fifteen thirty twenty three, after fiveESPN fifteen thirty Moegger, you have to
go back almost two years to findthe last time FC Cincinnati was trying to
(01:22:21):
end a losing streak, which iswhat they're going to be trying to do
on Saturday on the road against Atlanta, the Orange and Blue coming off a
two to one road loss at Montreal. The match on Saturday Night seven thirty
available on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV. One of the many great analysts
and commentators for MLS season pass isHime Massias, who is kind enough to
(01:22:45):
give us a few minutes. It'sgood to have you, Jime. How
are you, hey, boy?Plus you're tugging too, you man.
Uh. Two years, nearly twoyears since FC Cincinnati had a winning streak.
We're not used to this. Howdo they get back on the winning
track? Oh, it's going ingoals. Uh, yeah, it's it's
it's an unusual situation for for whatCincinnati have shown in the last two seasons.
(01:23:06):
But I think that since Cincinnati becamea candidate on achieving the trophies at
the end of the season, probablythis is the winter that the team the
team changed them MOUs with with theBrandon Baskus living with the the the wing
(01:23:29):
back also living at the beginning ofthe season, bringing some new players,
changing that they're attacking players. Andalso there is another thing. Teams respect
and fear Cincinnati, so the waythey play against Cincinnati more defensively, more
contract acting. It's it's also hurtinga team that that that is super good
in transition, right, because whenyou sit back, basically there's no transition,
(01:23:51):
there's no room to explore the transitions. So they're going to figure it
out. It's they have a greatcoach and have a great team, and
and and uh uh, I thinkthat it's a it's a working process.
It's great when you have a playerthe caliber of Alucho Acosta, it has
seemed to me that this season theremay be relying on him just a little
bit too much. Is that afair assessment? Yeah, it's it's a
(01:24:13):
fair assessment because when you rebuild ateam, and I don't think that Cincinnati
has is doing like a deep rebuild, but it's reconstructing certain key parts of
the pitches, especially the attacking theattacking third, you're gonna build them around
or you gotta anchor the rebuild aroundthe guy that you know it's going to
be there long term. Right. And for example, if we compare both
(01:24:36):
teams Cincinnati and Atlanta, I thinkthat Cincinnati is more luto a costa dependent
than what Atlanta is in Kiaualnada. Why from my perspective, because I know
that probably Cal's gonna leave at somepoint, right, And you cannot build
a team around a player that probablyat some point you're gonna leave. In
(01:24:57):
Cincinnati, you have a player that'spart of the team DNA and that it's
going to be there until they didn'twant him anymore, so you can build
the team around him. So it'sit's normal that a lot of that they
rely so much on him, apartfrom the quality right in this phase of
trying to put new pieces together organizea team in a shape. Early in
(01:25:18):
the season last year, they weredoing a good job of winning low goal
games, one zero games like that, and then the goals came and they
they when they started to come,it was an avalanche of goals. And
we saw what this team accomplished lastyear, and so I asked at the
top, how did they get backon the winning track and score more goals.
There's certainly a lot of validity tothat. I think what was most
disappointing about the Montreal games specifically, and I think this has come up at
(01:25:42):
times this year, is the defensehasn't been nearly as tight. I thought
they kind of looked slow against Montreal. What would you say to those looking
at the defensive side of things forFC Cincinnati and wanting more. Yeah,
I think that there are moments whereyou think that it can be more solid,
But in terms of numbers, it'sSincinnati to go to Atlanta, one
(01:26:02):
of the teams that have considered theless goals in the league on the seven
goals considered right, and and that'swhy sometimes that's live right a little bit
because it's not the number. It'show those seven works concede and and and
especially the Montreal goals. It's ifI tell you the start, it sounds
(01:26:24):
great. If you see how twoof those sevens goal work concede. There's
when you said like, yeah, probably since can be a little better.
I think that that that there aretwo things there right. The first one
it's Salentin. It's not there andnothing against the two goalkeepers that have played
the last two games. But agoalkeeper, it's not only what he saves,
(01:26:45):
is what he transmits, uh toto the to the guys are in
front of him. And I thinkthat he being out probably may make people
a little nervous, not because againnothing against the other two goalkeepers. It's
all the same fooling. You havethe guy that you have every single game
last year over there that somebody that'sstepping in in an unusual position, but
(01:27:06):
can is an amazing good people thatthat's why he had like the long career
he had, and the other thingis that the situation facing teams that,
because of the respect that Cincinnati haddeveloped in the last couple of years,
seem a little bit back waiting forthem. So your battle line needs needs
to take more risks to bring moremen forward so you can open gaps.
(01:27:30):
So the backline is also playing fartherfrom their goal. And when you play
farther from your own goal trying tocreate chances and trying to give that extra
men to attacking players, well, when you lose possession, you're really exposed.
So I think that it's a mixtureof both things. And as you
said, once a goal start coming, the team is going to sell down.
When Southerntin is going to come back, like, things are going to
(01:27:53):
get together, And I wouldn't getscared. I was reading a stat twenty
eighteen red Buls was the last timea team that competed in the international tournaments
h end up top of their conferencein the regular season, right, And
yeah, the beginning of the seasonwith a double tournament. It's also a
(01:28:15):
moment where you let a little bitof points go by. Yeah, and
worth mentioning by the way Roman Selatanoout for a third straight game on Saturday.
That from pat noon in uh,it's still early, but you look
at the table the top of theEastern Conference, everybody is really cloister together.
FC Cincinnati is in that mix.Atlanta, Saturday's opponent is in that
(01:28:36):
mix. How do you handicap theEastern Conference? I think that we are
starting starting to see the reality ofthe standards, right, we're gonna get
to with nine I always say tenweeks is where the standing. The standings
are a little bit more truth towhat performance is right. Everybody had to
(01:28:57):
face a top team, a lowerteam. Everybody has like kind of the
same number of games home and away. But but I think that for sure,
the Red Bulls are are probably theteam that improved the most in the
in the East. That's why they'rethey're yeah, my favorites are win the
conference, and and and and andthey're on the on the top. Philadelphia
had recovered a little bit after thethe CONCACAFT champions Cup participation, and they
(01:29:21):
are always there. And then Ithink Cincinnati at the other two things that
should be fighting on those on thosespots. Columbus deer for sure, but
let's not forget that Columbus is stillin the fight for the for the Concraft
champions Cups. So I think thatthey're they're still gonna lose. The lost
a little bit of points in thathome and away leg against a top team
(01:29:45):
like like Monterey. So I don'tthink they're gonna fight for the top basically
because I think they're playing so goodthat they're also putting a lot of eggs
in another basket. But for theend of the season there they're gonna they're
gonna get a I think they're gonnaget a chance on the on the on
(01:30:05):
repeating on the on the on theon the championship. Yeah, I hope
you're wrong about that, but Iunderstand where you're coming from. I appreciate.
Yeah. You know, you know, last year, let'st year.
What's funny because I throw like acurve bold prediction. I said, the
champion this season, the champion,it's gonna be either an Ohio team or
(01:30:28):
a yellow team. M uh becauseI had Nashville, Cincinnati and Columbus.
Yeah. So yeah, well,it it up been one for the Supporter
Shield, the other one for thefor the MLS Cup. And if you
want to give you credit, theNashville lost the League Cup. In penalties.
That's right, yeah, no,you were. You were all over
it, so uh all right,Well, it's awesome to have you as
(01:30:50):
always. Enjoy the match on Saturday, and hopefully we can do it again
this season. Man, thanks somuch anytime, and the nice nice having
you have a Cincinnati home game tillwas the summer, so hope to see
you there. Very good, yougot it, Thanks so much, Thank
you. All right, seven thirtyon Saturday, Hi May mas se us
with the call and Apple TV seasonpass. Of course you could also hear
(01:31:13):
the game live on ESPN fifteen thirty. We do have a Pat Brennan update.
That's for us tomorrow. Good. What do we have on Pat Brennan
for twenty FC Cincinnati Atlanta talk? And then Nicks sixers. You know that
Nixon Sixers haven't played in the playoffsin thirty five years, but we won
that one, swept him three straight. Pat Brennan for twenty Are you confident
(01:31:41):
went end of the series? Somewhat? Okay? I was listening to the
top of the hour thing Tim Leglertalking about Joel andb like if if Joel
mb excuse me, is one hundredpercent for this series, then I'm terrified
because I don't think they could beata team led by him. They were
thirty two and eight with him thisseason. That the overwhelming majority of those
(01:32:03):
games obviously came before he got hurt, when I think he was on track
to be the NBA's MVP had heplayed the sixty five games. But I
watched their game last night. Inthe fourth quarter, they're using him as
a decoy. He's not protecting therim, he's a liability on the pick
(01:32:23):
and roll. He didn't look likeJoe LMB. Now he gets they played
last night. Game one is onSaturday, so three days his conditioning looked
poor, if right. So ifthat all gets rectified, I don't see
how the Knicks win the series.Just call it what it is. I
just I don't see how the Knicksbeat them four times if that doesn't get
(01:32:45):
rectified. As much as I worryabout not having an answer for Tyrese MAXI
I think New York's offensive rebounding withespecially at the guard positions, and Jalen
Brunson's ability to put the team onhis back is going to be enough.
Home court I think is going tobe big in the series. But I
don't know how you really Vegas. As of this morning, FanDuel had the
(01:33:09):
Sixers as the betting favorite in theseries, and I can understand why until
you watched mb last night where itjust didn't look like he was in tip
top shape. Does that change overthe course of a series where you could
play seven games in fourteen days, seven like high impact physical games in fourteen
days. If it changes in Philly'sfavor, they're probably gonna win the series.
(01:33:30):
If it doesn't. I like theKnicks, so I'm really interested what
mbad we see on Saturday in gameone. Uh, all right, Pat
Brandon. Tomorrow we're playing Guess theFoot tarn. This is our last pair

dot Com. Now here's Moegger witha name, YOUNI to know. Even
(01:35:00):
if most of the pre draft conversationabout the Bengals has involved offensive and defensive
lineman, there's still an excellent chancethey'll use an early pick on a pass
catcher, which means that Florida's RickyPearsall is a name worth keeping in mind.
Pearsall played in fifty five college gamesbetween Arizona State and Florida, and
he led the Gators and receiving inboth of his seasons in Gainesville. He's
(01:35:23):
known for making tough catches. Anevaluator say he's maybe the best in this
year's class of wide outs at usinghis body to shield defenders from the ball.
He also returned punts at Florida, and in two years he had zero
muffs. There are concerns about histhin frame and his ability to miss tackles,
but most say he's a reliable receivingoption who has solid ball skills and
(01:35:44):
who runs routes well. Keep aneye on Florida wide receiver Ricky piersoll Oh
has more. Listen for the nextplayer profile on ESPN fifteen thirty, the
official home of the Bengals. Thinka lot to get the sports headlines,
a service of Kelsey Chevrolet. Imentioned this in passing with our last guest,
