ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports stationSports. What's up, Good afternoon,
I'm o Edward. This is ESPNfifteen thirty. Thank you for listening today's
show as a service of Zimmer Tracker. It's NFL Draft Eve. We're on
the air tomorrow from Long Necks andWilder Annual Draft Show. Cannot wait we

(00:21):
finally get answers. It feels weird. We're back to where we were for
so many consecutive years, where theBengals kind of in the latter stages of
the twenty fifteens or I'm sorry, the twenty tens after they were you know,
good for five straight years and madethe postseason, and then they were
never awful, but they were nevergood and they were always drafting kind of

(00:43):
in the middle the last two years. The Bengals have drafted really late the
previous two years prior to that, they drafted really early this year, kind
of smack dab in the middle.Lots of possibilities, lots of options,
lots of questions, lots of stuffto talk about. Cannot wait. Kelsey
Conway is going to be with us. The Inquirer cincinai dot Com does a
terrific job covering the Bengals. Sheis going to be really, really busy

(01:07):
over the next couple of days, and so I appreciate her time. Coming
up in just about thirty minutes. Also, if anybody knows Mike Renner,
Mike for years was with Pro FootballFocus and is one of the absolute best
at what he does. We're supposedto have Mike one today, we can't
get a hold of him. Also, later on, Brianna Jenko, the

(01:32):
women's golf coach at Xavier. Fiveconsecutive now Big East tournament titles for the
Xavier women's golf program. Coach Jenkojoins us. At four thirty three,
we have the Orthos Sincy injury update. We'll talk about Sam Hubbard and Frankie
Montas and so much more. Inthe five o'clock hour, Becaus spend a
few minutes on Reggie Bush getting hisHeisman trophy back, a few draft thoughts.

(01:55):
Let's begin though, with the Redsa nice bounce back night at GBP.
I'm going to admit something here.I'm how many games the Reds have
played? What twenty twenty twenty threegames? Look, there's more scrutiny on
every game on every decision, onevery pitch. I think, if we

(02:15):
are going to obsess over the startinglineup and get mad about it every day,
we're we're gonna be exhausted by Mother'sDay. I don't know. I
don't know that I can do itanymore. Last night, David Bell's lineup
worked. Santiago espinall proved useful withthe bat for the first time this year.

(02:36):
This on a day in which wedumped all over Santiago Espinal's hitting prowess.
He was terrific last night with threehits. Ellie de la Cruz put
on a show at the plate,in the field on the bass pass.
Ellie is awesome. He was terrificlast night. Hits a home run to
the opposite field, just a asthey say, great piece of hitting.

(02:57):
Christian and Caronasion Strand busted out bigwith three hits. They got a capable
ish start from Andrew Abbott. Fourand a third is not what you want.
It's not like you threw a thousandpitches. He had a hard time
finding the plate, but David Bellagain presses the right button and in the
fifth inning, with the bases loaded, calls upon Fernando Cruz who split fingered

(03:23):
fastball might be the best pitch inthe sport right now. The Reds bullpen,
aside from Casey Legomina, who's alreadybeen sent to Louisville, the Reds
bullpen over the last five days orso has been terrific. I thought one
of the most pleasant surprises last yearwas that the Reds bullpen turn well.

(03:45):
I think I'm just going through puberty. The Red's bullpen kind of turned into
a weapon, which, relative towhat we thought that group was going to
be prior to last season, wasa major surprise. Now it was asked
to do too much, but itwas sort of at the beginning of land
year. Alexis Diaz and a bunchof guys. I don't think that's the
case this year. By the way, great to have Sam Mall back and
make his twenty twenty four debut. He was far from perfect in the ninth

(04:10):
inning last night, but it's insuch a good job for the team.
Last year, after coming here fromOakland, Buck Farmer had a couple of
good innings. This team's bullpen, you know, the hyper focus on it.
With the way Sunday's game played outand Suitor having to come in in
the first inning and the bullpen givingthem eight and the third scoreless innings and
eight and the third scoreless innings ina game in which the Reds have had
no real margin for error. Lastnight they had some margin for error.

(04:33):
But Fernando Cruz gets out of ajam in the fifth and then the guys
that came in after him, Farmer, Pragan and Mole with the offense continuing
to add runs. Bullpen was terrific. Man. I think it's a lot
of fun. I think it's alot of fun to think about this team
having a bullpen that could be usedas a genuine weapon. Now again,

(04:55):
I know I keep harping on this. The starting pitching has to set the
bullpen. We cannot do The Redscannot do what they did last year,
which was consistently have to go totheir pen in situations like last night.
It's the fifth inning, and Ithink David Bell did the right thing.
I think David Bell, you know, we said this at the beginning of
the season. If people are gonnadump on David Bell every time they lose

(05:17):
a game, I'm gonna credit himevery time they win a game. He
goes to a cruise in the fifthinning, after Abbot strikes out Schwarber,
and he strikes out Trade Turner, which is not easy to do, and
then real Muto hit kind of ahard hit ball to center field, but
it was tracked down. Inning overdid the right thing there, But you
still want your starting pitcher to getthrough five or six. I will say

(05:40):
the same thing about Andrew Abbott andGraham Ashcraft and Nic Lodolo and Nick Martinez
and Frankie Montas when he comes backthat I've been saying about Hunter Green.
It would be great if these guyscould consistently give the red six. But
if they can just finish in theupper half, can I get greedy and
say upper of baseball and average startlength. David Bell's got some options.

(06:05):
And the one thing that's gonna makea manager seem really smart is a bullpen
where there are options, and abullpen that is consistently fresh and where there
are consistently rested options. And theone thing that can make a manager look
dumb is well a bullpen where there'snot a lot of options, and where
on a nightly basis he has tocross guys off that he can't use because

(06:28):
they're being used too much. DavidBell, for the most part over the
last five or six games, hasproven to look really good because of the
options he has in the bullpen. That is a really exciting thing about this
team. It's also really exciting towatch Ellie Dela Cruz. I know on

(06:48):
the Ellie Dela Cruz Homer another arefolks who get mad at me for losing
my mind every time he has agood game. If you are not quite
obsessed with the outcome to the samedegree that others are, and you allow
yourself to just watch him and enjoyhim growing into the role, you're having

(07:15):
a blast. Like I don't thinkhe's a finished product. He probably has
some major major valleys still ahead. He's not as good as we hope he
is going to be. He's abetter player now than he was last September,
which you might say is not reallysaying something. But forget about the
results, forget about the numbers, forget about how much he's helping or hurting

(07:38):
the team as they try to winthe National League Central. If you just
watch and pay attention the ball thathe hit out of the ballpark to the
opposite field last night, Man,there aren't many dudes his age who could
do that. There aren't many guyswho have a thousand or so Big League

(07:58):
got bats who can do that tohit it out with ease. The opposite
way, watching him just grow intothe role. We say this about like
raising kids. It's fun to watchyour kids grow up, isn't it.
It doesn't mean there aren't moments offrustration. It doesn't mean that there aren't
moments where you're gonna discipline them orhave to correct them, or get angry

(08:18):
with them or frustrated with them. It's part of the process. But it's
really fun watching your kids grow up. Right, It's really fun watching a
young dude who's just blessed with talentfigure it out in front of us.
It's so much fun. And thatis the case whether or not the Reds

(08:39):
are winning or losing. Obviously,it helps the Reds win when Ellie plays
well. He put on a showlast night, put on a show at
the plate, put on a showin the bases, put on a show
at shortstop. Him putting on ashow last night doesn't mean he's going to
be an MVP or the best playerin the game, but last night it

(09:00):
is just part of the process.Part of the process is he makes errors.
He strikes out looking he's not goodwith two strikes. He's a little
bit too impatient at times. Iguess he swings and misses a lot,
just though watching him grow into therole of reliable, consistent big leaguer who

(09:20):
has absolute star potential, who Ithink is going to realize that potential,
who I believe is already starting torealize that potential. Watching that play out
in front of us is an absoluteblast. It's so much fun. And
as I watched last night, asI've watched over these last couple of weeks,
that to me has been the bestpart. Reds are winning. They're

(09:43):
thirteen and ten. They've avoided theslow start, they bounced back last night.
They've won four out of five.Be great if they could at least
split this series against the Phillies. They have found ways to overcome not having
Matt McClain and not having Noelve Marteand not having TJ. Friedel. They'll
have to figure out a way fora couple of starts to get through not
having Frankie Montas. They can frustrate, Ellie can frustrate, but just watching

(10:07):
him, watching him get it watchingthe light bulb come on, watching him
make adjustments, watching the the thebaseball playing ability catch up to the raw
physical talent is an absolute blast. And if you can enjoy that, why
even pay attention? Sixteen minutes afterthree o'clock. Uh, we have phone

(10:31):
lines open. I've given you nothingreally to respond to, but they're open.
Five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty and eight six six seven
oh two three seven seven six.You can Mike. We have located Mike.
Is he okay? He is fine? Is he gonna join us?
He? Uh? Put central Timesteadof Eastern time? Okay? Can he

(10:54):
still join us? Working on thatnow? Okay? Did he enjoy our
APB? He didn't say. Probablynothing that on air. If we get
him on, yes, Well,I'm just glad he's okay. I'm just
glad he has been I'm just gladhe has been found, I said on
the show preview video. For thoseof you old enough to remember, Tom

(11:15):
Browning went missing during Game two ofthe nineteen ninety World Series because his his
wife was was giving birth and hejust in full uniform, went to the
ballpark and then the Reds asked Martyand Joe and Jack Buck and Tim McCarver
in the TV booth to put outan APB for Tom Browning, and so
we just did that for Mike Rennerbecause we were worried about him more than

(11:35):
anything else. Uh twenty four totwenty Mike Renner. Fantastic love Mike Renner.
That dude's as good as they get, and I know he's in demand.
Sos Kelsey Conway. She is goingto join us at three thirty five.
We have a lot of ground tocover. Reggie Bush got his Heisman
trophy back. By the way,the Mike Renner APB Slash show preview videos

join us tomorrow at Long Next.Today show is a service of a Zimmer

(13:30):
tractor. Let's before we get toKelsey Conway, who's going to join us?
Kelsey wants to berate me because Itold her on social media I hate
the movie Rudy and that's like herfavorite. So we'll also talk about the
draft. Todd is joining us fromLoveland. Hi Todd, you're on ESPN
fifteen thirty. Congratulations, Hey Mo, thank you. I feel very very

(13:52):
good about it. I get acouple of things for you. I think
you're going to be excited about bothof them. One because i'm calling to
disagree if you bought something, andtwo second, thing is your favorite topic.
First, first to disagreement, Ithink you should read the lineup.
I'm going to read it. I'mgoing to read it every day. I
don't. I'm happy to provide theinformation. I just can't lose my mind
over it every day. Well,I agree with that part, so we'll

(14:16):
definitely read the lineup, no doubt. You don't have to analyze it.
But you know, we listen tothe radio for multiple reasons. For me,
it's information, sure, analysis, opinion, and entertainment kind of in
that order. So you get information, What do we do we provide any
of that on a consistent basis. You provide all of that on a consistent

(14:39):
basis, just some different ratios,No, we will read. Don't worry
about that, Okay, all right, great, Hey, second thing is
Bearcat basketball. I wondering if youcould just give a quick update on where
the team is. What I knowis that Skillings, James, and Lucocius
have said they're coming back, Lockingand Reynolds are in the portal, probably

(15:03):
on Wes's recommendation. And as theseis declaring for the draft of the option
to come back. Uh go correct? Uh well, Sage Tolantino also and
I saw Chad Brendle put on socialmedia today that he's off to unc Asheville
and good luck to him. Yeah, Jamiel goes to u SF. I
think that was a bit of asurprise, to be honest with you.

(15:26):
Victor Lokins off to Clemson. Butnothing against those players. I think if
if at the end of the seasonwe were to rank and order, Okay,
who are the players that you reallywant to make sure come back.
The guys that you would list firsthave all said they're coming back now as
these Bandega is going to test theNBA waters and everybody does that. Everybody
wants to go to camps and getthe feedback. But he has also said

(15:48):
his intention is to play for theBearcats next year. So if you if
you assume he's coming back, andyou were to to just look at last
year's team and take away the guyswho are going to graduate and rank in
order of players from that, youwould want to come back to the ones
at the bottom that you would bemore okay with leaving. The guys at
the top of that list have allsaid they're going to stay. I think

(16:10):
primarily Gigsel, James, Dan Skillings, Connor Hickman's coming from Bradley. Connor
Hickman last year shot forty percent fromthree obviously played against UC in the NIT
when the Braves and Bearcats hooked upin the first round there. I think
it's fair to wonder athletically how canhe hold up if he's getting major minutes
in the Big twelve. But ideallyhe doesn't need to play major minutes in

(16:33):
the Big twelve and they could takeadvantage of his shot making ability. They've
also brought in Arrington Page, whothey went after heavily and lost out on
when he decided to go to USC. USC has obviously had a coaching change,
and so Errington Page at the transferportal. He is a guy that's
a bit raw statistically, didn't doa ton during his freshman season, but

(16:56):
he is a guy they prioritized ayear ago, didn't get them. They
get him now. I think thename that right now most are focusing on,
and I got about a minute hereis Sean Stewart from Duke. Duke
has had basically an exodus, likeseven kids have left. My understanding is
he is on campus this weekend. Now everybody, everybody among the everybody is

(17:18):
reaching out to him. But myunderstanding is Bearcat's coaching staff feels like they
at least have a shot. SoI think right now, just based on
who has stayed, who has left, who has come in, and who
they still may get, they canbe kind of choosy here. They've got
right now one more spot to fill. They're not desperate to fill it,
so you could be kind of choosyhere. I think they're in a pretty

(17:38):
good place. How about Thomas andReid, uh say it again? Dayda
Thomas day day. Thomas is comingback and Josh Reed is coming back as
well. That's good news. That'sgreat information and analysis. Most thank you
all right. I appreciate the phonecall. Mike Mike said that we provide

(17:59):
information. What did he say?Information analysis? I was todd, I'm
sorry, I'm looking at Mike's onhold. We provide information, analysis,
insight, I don't opinion, opinion, and okay, I will I will
say we give opinion. We doprovide information analysis, not sure entertainment.

(18:22):
No chance Kelsey Conway will provide thosethings. As we talk about the draft
and more. Next PN fifteen thirtysports headlines are a service to Kelsey Chevrolet

people happy. They switched things upfrom what they've done the last couple of

is tomorrow, which means it'll bea very busy next few days for our
friend Kelsey Conway, who covers theBengals for the Cincinnati Inquirer and Cincinnati dot
Com. She is on x atKelsey L. Conway and always kind enough

(19:57):
to give us some time, especiallyaround the draft. Hi, Kelsey,
Hello, I think that you shouldintroduce me as You can follow her on
Twitter for her sangle content in herexcellent movie take. Well, if you
had excellent movie takes, I would, but I don't. I don't believe
in false advertising. I'm still waitingfor you to put that pull out.

(20:21):
See your listeners about if they thinkthat Rudy is a good movie. Because
I have a feeling for one, people will actually side with me. All
right, well, we're going todo that. We're going to save that
to the end of the show. Can we do something really quick before we
do that and before we talk aboutthe draft? Absolutely? Could we call
you back because there's a crackle inthe phone and I don't want I don't

(20:42):
want to crackle in the phone todominate our conversation. Can we do that?
Absolutely? All right, hang tight, We'll call Kelsey back and we'll
get rid of that crackle. Youcan't have a crackle in your phone line.
Radio stations have been putting phone callson the air for are literally one
hundred and four years, and yetwe still are trying to perfect the technology

(21:04):
that allows us to make phone callsand have them sound clean. By the
way, a couple of other quickNFL notes A busy day in Detroit,
which is where the draft is Amonree Saint Brown signs a massive contract seventy
seven mill guaranteed wide receiver for Detroit. He gets his deal in Piney Sool,
a massive contract. Speaking of JamarChase, Obviously, the twenty twenty

(21:27):
one draft here dominated by that entireChase versus Seouol debate. Jamar Chase doesn't
have his deal yet and probably won'tfor another year, but pinee Sool gets
his the day before the NFL Draft. Also, for what it's worth,
as we try to reconnect with KelseyConway, our friend Mike Renner. Mike

(21:48):
for years wrote for Pro Football Focus, podcasted for Pro Football Focus, and
now he's part of the Bleacher ReportDraft show. He is going to be
with us at four to two twentyand Brianna Jenko, the women's golf coach
ch aed Xavier fifth consecutive Biggies Tournamenttitle or NCAA tournament bound. We'll chat
with her coming up at four thirtythree. I think I have successfully conducted

(22:15):
a filibuster and we can get Kelseyon and hopefully there's no crackle. Hi,
Kelsey, Hi, I'm back andhopefully with no crackle. You sound
great? You sound great? Allright? Before we talk about Rudy and
how bad of a movie it is. You did you your three round mock
draft and you say the Bengals haveto take Byron Murphy. Do you think
he's going to be there? Ido, Okay, so right, you've

(22:40):
seen it last week. There'd justbe a ton of smoke from national reporters
about, you know, how ByronMurphy is shooting up draft boards. I
thought something most recently from Daniel andJeremiah that to me makes more sense,
and that is I think that therun on tackles is going to be the
only reason Byron Murphy is available tothe Bengals at pick eighteen. But the

(23:04):
picks that people really need to keepan eye on in terms of if Byron
Murphy is going to be there isNew Orleans. I think that they do
have a need for an interior defensivelineman and then Seattle. Seattle is the
one, and they pick right beforethe Bengals. That's the one where I
think he could potentially go there. But I could also see Seattle taking the

(23:26):
tackle from Washington if he's there,or an edge rusher. But I do
think Byron Murphy is going to slipsolely because I think someone's going to go
crazy and jump up to get aquarterback. Then they're going to go on
the run of receivers, and thenthe run of tackles, and I think
the Bengals are going to luck into picking Byron Murphy. Do you think

(23:48):
they would like him enough that ifSeattle is there and Byron Murphy is falling
and there are a couple of picksaway, that the Bengals would maybe try
to trade up to get them. What was my biggest question yesterday and it's
stemmed from a comment that Bengals directorof college Scouting Mike pots made in its
press conference, and he said,we understand the urgency and needing to win

(24:12):
now. And the reason I bringthat up is because we've all mocked tackles
to the Bengals, right Like, that's clearly a need for them, and
everybody wants to talk about they needto secure a long term answer. If
you listen to Mike Potts, hewould make you believe that maybe for once,
they would consider it, because ifyou ask me, what is the

(24:33):
Bengal's biggest positional need right now,it's they don't have a shore fire starter
at nose tackle that can plug themiddle and stop the run, Like forget
about what he can do as apass rusher. If the Bengals started the
season tomorrow and didn't fill that need, it would be hard to pick them

(24:55):
in games where teams are going torun the ball. So I think,
based off of my the comments yesterdaythat I really do think that they would
consider this year because things have changedwith Zach Taylor and his ability to be
able to communicate with Mike Brown thingsthat he needs that the Bengals haven't given
him in the past. I reallythink that if they get this sense that

(25:19):
Seattle really could take Byron Murphy,I think they would be open to a
one or two pick jump, notanything crazy, three or four picks,
or they'd have to give up things. But I actually do, for one
think that they would consider it.There's a big difference between considering it and
then pulling the trigger because as weknow, you know, Mike Brown historically

(25:40):
hasn't really done that. But Ido think yesterday's comments from Mike Potts lead
me to believe that they would considerit if it was like a one or
two pick move. All right,so defensive tackle is a massive need.
If he's there, you take him. If he's not there, you still
have to fix defensive tackles. AmI should I believe that they can still

(26:00):
do that even if they're addressing thatposition on Friday or later. I think,
based off of talking to coaches allover the NFL specifically about the defensive
tackle position, I think that ifthe Bengals don't get a defensive tackle in
the first round, they are goingto have to move up in the second

(26:21):
round. So honestly, I thinkit's very likely that they'll have to move
up either on Night one or Nighttwo to ensure that they secure that defensive
tackle position. Because the people thatreally study the tape have told me there
is a massive drop off from thetop two defensive tackles in this draft class
to the rest. So those peoplethat are saying they could just get one

(26:44):
in the third round who you couldjust plug in, from what I have
heard, the class is not good. It's not deep. So I think
if they want Johnny Newton and theydon't think he's good enough in it for
pick eighteen, I think you eitherhave to decide if you want to trade
back and potentially pick him up alittle bit later. But if you Night
one decide you're going to take atackle, you better be prepared to have

(27:07):
to go up in round two toget a defensive tackle. So I think
that it's something that it has tohappen in rounds one or two or else.
It would be hard for me togive them a good grade on their
draft class if they finish rounds oneand two without a defensive tackle. You
could read Kelsey's three round Bengals mockdraft at Cincinnati dot Com. If during

(27:30):
this exercise I said to you,you got to pick somebody in round one
with the eighteenth pick, but itcan't be Byron Murphy. What I assume
it's one of the tackles, Andif the answer is yes, who would
make the most sense, I'm gonnaget crazy here and tell you it's not
a tackle. And I'm so curiousto see this because I think that's like

(27:56):
what everybody's thinking, and they verywell could to take the fifth or sixth
best tackle. I mean, ifStacy Ladam from Alabama is available, I
think he would one hundred percent bethe pick. But I'm not sure based
off of talking to people that havescouted this offensive line class that a Marius
Mims. I know that's been aname mock to the Bengals a lot.

(28:19):
I'm not sure that he's worth thepick at eighteen based off of him only
having eight starts and not not reallybeing enough film to see. And again
I go back to Mike Plot's initialcomment, which is they're trying to win
now and maryus Trent Brown wouldn't havesigned the Bengals had he not been told
he's going to be the starter. He told us he's going to start.

(28:40):
He is going to be the startingright tackle. Sure, you can bring
up he hasn't finished the season, injury whatever, that this pick is potentially
going to play at some point, simply because they're probably not going to be
able to get through the season withoutan injury. When you are picking in
a year where you're saying, we'repaying t Higgins all this money to try
and run it back, your pickhas to be someone who's going to start

(29:02):
right away. And to me,that's not a Marius Men's So then you
fall into the category of who whowould it be then? And I think
that it's not out of the questionfor them to consider a cornerback right there
if some of the better cornerbacks areavailable, and then of course, you

(29:22):
know, I can't believe I'm sayingit, but if one of the receivers
is there, and it wouldn't becrazy to me to see them do it
if they're truly trying to take thebest player available to that. So I
am not going to answer your questionin the sense of I think they take
a tackle. I think that ifthat run on tackles goes and Murphy isn't

(29:45):
there, I think that they eithertrade back or they take a corner or
a receiver. Where are you onthe brock powers to be? I think
he's going to be long gone,But if he was available at pick eighteen,
to me, that would that wouldmake a ton of sense. And
I know a lot of people arequick to say, well, in the
Bengals offense, to tight ends andplay that that big of a role.

(30:08):
You know, I sat in everyone of Zack Killer's press conference when he
praised Dalton Kincaid and Sam Laporta andjust how outstanding those guys. Where I
think that, Yes, in theBengals current offense, it's structured around two
receivers. But again, you know, we all kind of know where things
are headed with Tea in next yearthat the Bills weren't saying just because they

(30:30):
had Stefan Diggs and Gay Davis,Hey, we don't need you know,
Dalton can caid it. It's trulywho's the best player available who can come
in and make an impact, Andto me, brock Powers would fit that.
But I seem to get the sensethat he's going to be a top
fifteen pick. But that's what makesfor the Bengals are picking so interesting and

(30:51):
so much fun. Like the lastcouple of years, when they've been picking
in the bottom five, you know, you know that most likely the top
twenty five prospects are going to begone. But this year, I mean,
it could go so many different directionsbased off the run that happens right
in front of the Bengals. SoI think for Bengals fans that are excited
about the draft, like I know, every year it's exciting, but this

(31:12):
one, this year, to meis really interesting because they could really go
a multitude of different directions. Andit's made someone as a beat writer who's
trying to prepare my ten different storieswhere they could go a really long week
from work. Beyond that, becauseyou have to cover all the actual draft
picks, is your favorite part ofthe draft when they start signing undrafted college

(31:36):
free agents because they most closely identifywith five foot six one hundred and fifty
five pound Rudy Rudiger from your favoriteall time movie. No, honestly,
because in ful transparency, you getto the end of Saturday Night and you're
just like, oh my gosh, what a weekend. You know, at
that point you've probably written like fifteenstories. So no credit to the people

(32:00):
that sign as undrafted free agents. But that really doesn't jazz me up like
the full draft weekend dies. Butmy point on Rudy simply is, you
know he united the team and everybodywants to root for Rudy Oh night.
I just I don't understand your disdaintowards that Rudy is whiny. First of

(32:22):
all, he abandons his fiance leavesher with the mortgage so he can go
be an overage college student. Hedoes this after he kills his friend Pete
because he doesn't get to the watervalve on tie. He creepily stalks the
entire city of South Bend with hisbuddy d Bob, who doesn't know how
to how to approach women. Hebreaks He breaks in and enters Notre Dame

(32:44):
Stadium because he has no place tosleep. Instead of being upfront about it,
he lies about being a student,he whinds all the time, he
quits before his last game because theywon't let him dress, and he was
off sides on the final play. What is there to like about Rudy Rudiger?
What a detestable human being that they'veromanticized in a poorly made movie.

(33:06):
Are you a critic for Rotten Tomatoes? Because maybe you should pick that up
as a as a side job. Now, well, uh, maybe I
don't know. I don't see enoughmovies. But I did see that in
the theater and I was with threeother guys that movie came out. I'm
much older than you. I wasin high school and these three guys were
like inspired, they wanted to goplay high school football again. And I'm

(33:28):
like, really that that inspired you? This cheat, this criminal, this
poor fiance, this poor excuse fora guy, this whiner, this dude
who should have been cited for breakingand entering. That's your inspiration, buddy,
We have different priorities. Well, you know that makes me feel better
that your friends that you originally sawit thought the same thing as me.

(33:49):
So maybe it seems like this isa you problem with Rudy very much?
Is I'm not saying the movie itselfis like terrible. There's some there's some
really cool ball practice scenes. I'llgrant you that. Oh that's fine.
And I do think they portray cloudy, dingy, disgusting, bad looking,

(34:09):
South bending me and quite well, like I've been to South Bend, I've
never seen the sun same as inthat movie. I think that that's pretty
good. But like Rudy as aninspiring character, no, not for me.
Okay, Well, I do havea question. Do you think that
that poll compared to a poll aboutwhat would anger Bengals fans more about if

(34:34):
the Bengals took a receiver in thefirst round or if they took the fifth
best offensive lineman, which one doyou think would get more engagement? Receiver?
Well, the receiver, yeah, the receiver, yes, yeah,
that. But I feel more passionatelyabout how much I don't like Rudy than
I do the fifth tackle in thedraft. Okay, okay, Well we'll

(34:57):
reevaluate that. If they do takea fifth, fifth best tackle in the
draft and in three years, youknow, he's not very good, we'll
see if that may be upset youmore than Rudy. All right, well,
we'll see. I always appreciate youcoming on. I know you're very
busy over the next couple of days. I'm sure I'll bother you after the
draft. Thank you as always, absolutely had to blast. That's our friend

(35:19):
Kelsey Conway covering the Bengals and thedraft for the Inquirer and Cincinnati dot Com.
You could follow her on get herbad movie takes at Kelsey L.
Conway. I know that's an unpopulartake. People love the movie Rudy.
It's not a terrible film. Rudy'sjust is annoying. He put a lot

(35:40):
of people through a lot of thingsto go to go run out on the
kickoff covered unit and jump off sidesand sack the Georgia Tech quarterback. I
will die on that hill. Sevenminutes away from four o'clock. Mike Renner
on the draft coming up at fouroh five. I have I have changed
my mind on something. I havechanged my mind and I'm all in on

(36:00):
something tomorrow night. We'll get tothat coming up at four oh five.
Today's show is a service of ZimmerTractor on Moeger seven away from four ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station. They'remore identity threats. That's us good afternoon,
Moeger ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank youfor joining us today. We have
a busy, busy, busy hour. Today's show is a service of Zimmer

(36:22):
Tracker. We are gearing up forthe NFL Draft. We'll have a couple
of poll questions on Twitter momentarily MikeRenner formally a Pro Football Focus, formerly
of an awful publication, awful becauseit folded abruptly and left people like Mike
and the Lurch the messenger. I'mglad he's moved on from that. He
is going to be with us atfour to twenty. He is as good

(36:44):
as they come when it comes toa breaking down the draft. And also
Brianna Jenko, the women's golf coachat Xavier, the Musketeers winning a fifth
consecutive Biggies championship and NCAA tournament bound. We have that conversation at four thirty
five, plus US Brendanman and Joneson baseball, and I'm hoping it's as
good as yesterday's segments. Room foryour phone calls coming up in a bit.

(37:13):
I am a flexible, open mindedperson. I don't have many positive
attributes, but I'm an open mindedperson. And at times when it comes
to the draft, I can beeasily swayed. I think I've been swayed
once and for all. I've changedmy mind. It happens. It's not
really encouraged in this business. Bythe way. I've worked for people who

(37:36):
would say, once you have anopinion, you have to dig in it
in your opinion, and I'm like, yeah, that's not how human beings
operate. Human beings change their minds, they get information, circumstances change,
things evolve, or they remember things. As I've kind of consumed all this
draft content over the last couple ofweeks, as I've read mock drafts,

(38:00):
as I've looked at draft guides,as I've interviewed people on this show,
as I've chatted with people who Ithink are really locked into this entire process,
I've come back to something that Isaid often in the early stages of
the off season, as it's relatedto T Higgins. I want the Bengals

(38:24):
to prioritize winning the Super Bowl thisseason. That's why I don't want to
trade T Higgins. That's why I'mcompletely okay with the approach they've taken so
far tag him. Understand that he'snot thrilled with it. Who would be
understand that he might request a trade. Work through the off season, bring

(38:46):
him back once the games begin, because he's not going to sit out and
try to win a title while youstill have him and Jamar and Joe together.
That means saying no to a possibletrade. That means locking in on
twenty twenty four. Let's win thetitle this year. And when you go

(39:07):
all in on winning a title inthe short term, you are at times
willing to sacrifice the long term justa little bit. I'm willing to do
that with the draft. Byron Murphy'smy guy. I don't know if he's
there. I do think there's somevalidity to the idea that you might trade

(39:29):
up, although that's going to costa draft capital, and so I'm not
sure on nuts about that. I'mnot sure the Bengals would be nuts about
that. But I have focused mostlyon tackles, and understandably so, I
think a lot of us have spenta lot of time on tackles. Which
one would make the most sense, which ones would be there, which ones

(39:50):
could you maybe get later. Ido believe if you want to build an
elead offensive line, that's really onlygonna happen if you start nailing it in
the draft, and your chance isof nailing it in the draft. On
the offensive line are better the earlieryou take them, and that's got to
happen at some point, right Imean, the Bengals this year at best
are probably at best gonna have aleague average offensive line. At some point,

(40:15):
I'd love to see Joe Burrow playbehind a great offensive line, one
that was regarded as and grated likeone of the league's best. I hope
that can happen soon. Certainly understandthey need to target tackles and interior offensive
lineman in this draft. You've gotto find some short term backups, but

(40:35):
defensive tackle is a major need. They've got to be exponentially better against the
run this year, and they needmore of an interior pass rush. I've
watched Byron Murphy play. I've watchedhim play from the standpoint of a guy
who loves college football sitting on mycouch on fall Saturdays. I'm not crunching
the tape. I'm not qualified tocrunch the tape. Mike Renner says,

(40:58):
and he joins this in ten minutes, and he's the best defensive player in
this draft. Every single person wehave talked to on this show, nearly
every person whose opinion I value, has maintained this guy can come in and
make an immediate impact. If theydraft in the first round or right tackle.
Is he doing that. I'm noteven sure he's going to play.

(41:22):
I'm not gonna be unhappy if theytake a tackle. I can understand why
they would. The chances are thatguy will play at some point. But
I'm gonna be consistent here from theget go, from day one of the
offseason, as we started to outlinewhat the coming months were gonna look like.
For me, this was an offseason to prioritize the here and now.

(41:44):
Let's win it this year. Everythingwe do should be designed to win
this year. That doesn't mean you'renot balancing the long term and the short
term. You're not drafting Byron Murphyfor just a year. You get a
dtackle a position that is getting paidbig dollars right now. I get a

(42:05):
potential big time defensive tackle who canmake an immediate impact. I get him
on a rookie contract for the nextfour to five years. I'm gonna go
ahead and do that now. Wecould argue whether or not he's gonna be
there. We could argue if he'sthere in that range where New Orleans,
for instance, in Seattle are, whether or not it would make sense to
trade up. But you know, everybody that I've seen mock the Bengals taking

(42:30):
him, and I certainly understand youcan get so inundated with mock dress that
it could be exhausting and tiresome andthey could all start to blend together.
But every time I've seen one,I've asked myself, okay, that versus
one of these tackles with Byron Murphy, if the consensus is he can step
in and play immediately, and stepin and make a difference immediately at a

(42:51):
position where the Bengals were not goodlast year and frankly haven't gotten better yet
this offseason. I've got to dothat. I want to win the Super
Bowl this year. I think ByronMurphy inches them closer to that more than
any offensive lineman they could take inRound one. You've got to take an
offensive lineman. You've got to takemultiple offensive lineman. You've got to start.

(43:15):
I'm not sure about their current backups. You've got to maybe provide some
competition for Cordell Volson. You've gotto have some depth on the interior.
You've got to find your right tackleof the future. All I've heard since
day one of the offseason, though, is great tackle class. Okay.
If so, in a draft whereI have three Friday picks, can I

(43:37):
find one? Can I find aJonah Williams Like? Legitimately that could be
sort of the baseline standard. CanI find a Jonah Williams. I'm not
sure Jonah Williams ever played like afirst round pick. I think he kind
of played like a Day two guy. He was the best offensive lineman on
a Super Bowl offensive line. Hewas the only guy they'd brought back in

(43:58):
twenty twenty two. He was partof an improved offensive line in twenty two,
and he made a very smooth transitionto the right side in twenty twenty
three. Can I find that onFriday? I think the answer is yes.
And that's from my standpoint. I'mnot a draft nick. I'm not
Joe Goodberry, I'm not Mike Renner, I'm not Dane Brugler. I'm not

(44:22):
Lewis Riddick, who was on withTony and Austin today and we'll hear from
at four forty five. I'm notKelsey, I'm not Paul Dayner. I
admit that I don't do mock drafts. What I am as a fan who
wants the Bengals to win the titlethis year, and so for me,
the draft philosophy should reflect that urgencyand that priority. Amarius Mims has brought

(44:45):
up all the time, big dude, lots of raw talent. He's played
eight college football games at the positionthe Bengals would draft him to play.
I'm not gonna turn my nose upat it. I get it. If
he's there, Byron Murphy's not,he might be the guy. Again.
I have no idea if Byron Murphyis there. Everybody we've had on the

(45:06):
show, I've asked is he goingto be there? Some say yes,
some say no, some go I'mnot sure, some think maybe. But
that's what I want. I wasasked yesterday by somebody, what's your best
case scenario? And my response was, I'm really coming around on Byron Murphy.
And the main reason I'm coming aroundis back to what I said back

(45:28):
in January. I want to winthe title this year. To win the
title this year and I'm willing.I'm willing to sacrifice some things long term
in order to do it, whichmeans if I get a T Higgins trade
offer and I kind of feel likethat ship has sailed, I'm saying no
because I want him on the teamthis year. Understanding you might lose them

(45:49):
for effectively nothing in a year, and I'm willing to prioritize. They were
bad. DJ Reader was on theBengals last year. We love DJ Reader.
They were awful against the run.The AFC North is now a better
running running division, and they didn'thave much of an interior pass rush.

(46:10):
Can Byron Murphy help with those things? The consensus is yeah, I'm in.
I want to win the title thisyear for me. Duke Tobin is
paid to look at things differently. For me, I'm willing to draft with
that more in mind than at anyother point since I've been following this franchise.

(46:34):
What puts me closer to winning itthis year? Now, look that
could blow up, right, Youtake Byron Murphy, you take a tackle
who's not week one ready, andin Week one Trent Brown gets hurt or
Orlando Brown gets hurt, or there'sa bunch of issues on the offensive line
during training camp, and suddenly ina year where you're trying to win,
Joe's playing behind an offensive line whereyou're playing some dudes who you don't really

(46:54):
trust. I get it, butI want to fix this hole, and
I'm really not sure what that dropoff of that position being what it is.
You could fix it sufficiently if youwait until Friday or Saturday. You
might not have a choice. Ifthe players we're talking about aren't there A
lot of folks love Johnny Newton morethan Byron Murphy. But I've been the

(47:20):
guy who for four months, forthree and a half months, has been
touting the validity of going all inwith T Higgins and with this team and
having your free agency. H philosophyreflect that. Let's let the draft philosophy
reflect that too. Five point threeseven four nine, fifteen thirty is our

(47:42):
phone number. Mike Renner joins us. Next. We're brought to you today
by Zimmer Tractor on moleg Or.This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports
Station, Cincinnati. For this isESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Maegar,
thrilled that you are with us today. Brennanman and Jones on baseball coming
up in thirty minutes. Mike Rennerhas joined us every year for years and

(48:05):
spent years with Pro Football Focus.I think the best draft conversation we ever
had was when my man was justtrying to relax at the Holy Grail Aft
opening Day and I kept peppering himwith bad draft questions and I thought I
would do it. Now. Heis a part of the Bleach Report Draft
Show. He is on Twitter atMike Renner Underscore and he's with us.
Now. What's going on? No, how's it going? Thanks for having

(48:27):
me back on. It's good tohave you. Is everything okay? Yes,
I'd moved out sincin that and I'mon Central Time now and it screws
me up every time I try toschedule stuff. I understand. Well.
I always appreciate it when you comeon. I know you do a lot
of these and to get you theday before the draft is is pretty cool.
I want to go back to somethingthat you put on Twitter, a

(48:49):
lot of smart stuff. There area lot of folks here hoping that Byron
Murphy is there at eighteen. Youput out that you think he is the
best defensive player in the draft. We could wonder and debate whether or not
he's going to be there at eighteen, but put him on tape. For
me, what makes him the bestdefensive player in the draft. He is
just tough, geno acitecture, andthen when he wants to go somewhere,

(49:13):
it's difficult to stop him going there. Like you can see it in a
straight line, linear explosion. He'soff the charts. I mean at his
sides. Running in the four eighthover three hundred pounds is pretty absurd.
And you watch him on tape, especially go back to the end of last
season. You know, because he'sa young guy coming out only a junior.
Last six games, he just wasliving in backfield. So that combination

(49:35):
of explosiveness with that sort of stout, lower, shorter body type, it's
just difficult for off the wigeman toreleverage and anchor against. And Yeah,
I don't know if he makes itto eighteen, but if the Bengals are
feeling a little frisky, they canmove up and go get his talent somewhere,
maybe in the early teams. Yeah, I think there's some validity to
that. The drop off from himto the rest of the players at that

(49:55):
position, how steep is it.I don't think it's that steep To Johnny
Newton. I think he is adarn good player. I think there's different
types of players though, Like Murphyis definitely more the versatile guy. Can
play the nose, can play youknow, three tech. He can play
all those newtons of three techle likehe is a nombi versatile dude. But
in that role, I think he'sgonna excel in the NFL. But so

(50:17):
for the Bengals specifically with what theycall the defensive line, with the versatility
they like, I think it's apretty big drop off for them. So
they would probably be getting Nancy thereat eighteen. So want to get a
guy like that? If if ByronMurphy is gone and I'm hoping to sift
through a couple of different tackle optionsoffensive tackle options at eighteen, who's the

(50:37):
guy that I should be hoping isthere? I think they're hoping for Olu
Fashan. I mean, if youwant pass protection and this year's drafts,
he may be very well end upbeing the best one. And I was
working the running game, leave somethingto be desired. I think you could
see him passed up by some bigger, stronger, better run game tackles in
this draft class, because that's kindof the teams in front of him that
need those tackles are teams that aremore power run game oriented. So obviously

(51:01):
you have the two tackles for thisyear, but not necessarily long term.
And to me, Fashnu is theguy that's I think he's just a sure
thing and pass protection based off ofwhat I saw on tape, So that's
the dream from what I've heard inthe tackles are going early, so there
may not be there may be likesix off the board by the time the
Bengals are on the clock at eight. Team is the class of that position

(51:22):
so deep that if I get oneon Friday, I can feel good about
that guy having to possibly play thisyear. I do think so. Honestly,
I think there are guys that willgo Day two. And obviously any
offensive tackle you don't feel great aboutstarting as a rookie. It's just the
track record that position. But Ithink there's tackles that you could feel like
you could start at guard or centeras a rookie and not miss a beat.

(51:45):
So it's a really really deep offof the line class. They have
both tackle and on the interior. So yet I wouldn't recommend necessarily waiting on
tackle, but it's definitely a positionyou can find on Day two this year
in a unique manner. Now,Mike Renner is with this on Twitter at
at at Mike Renner underscore the widereceiver position. They're taking one. I

(52:06):
don't know if it's if it's gonnahappen tomorrow night, but they're taking one
before we get to midnight on Friday. Day two options of that position that
would make most sense for what theBengals have now and what they're gonna need
later. Who is it? Yeah, So day two I think to replace
Tyler Boyd. There's a lot ofguys high like in this draft class.
The two probably the most that Ilove in this class that could do that

(52:29):
is key On Colemans from Florida Stateand jay On Colt from Washington. They're
both bigger body, slot receivers, great ball skills though super savvy over the
middle of the field, Like exactlywhat you want to pair with Joe Burrow
because guys who you know, evenwhen they're not necessarily open, can still
make plays when Joe Burrow gives hima chance. So it's a great class
to need that hype a wide receiverif you're trying to replace t Higgins long

(52:50):
term. I'm not necessarily sure there'sgonna be that guy in the second round,
but I definitely think you can finda Boyd replacement. There are lots
of folks listening to this conversation whoare hoping, perhaps against hope, that
Brock Bowers is there at eighteen. And then you'll find some some folks who
would say, even if he isthere, you don't take a tight end
in round one. What say youabout Brock Powers. I think he's the

(53:13):
highest floor side end prospect I've seenin the past decade. He's just if
you just call them wide receiver. And like I go back to his freshman
year at Georgia when they had adNi Mitchell on that roster, they had
Tremaine Burton on that roster, theyhad Lad McConkie, three guys who will
be top set by picking New yeardrafts. He had like four hundred more
yards and all of those guys ifhe was the number one option, that's
the true freshman on a national championhipteam. So he's darn good. You

(53:36):
can call him whatever you want. He's going to produce at a high level,
and he would be perfect for whatkind of what the Bangles need,
Like he could replace Tyler Boyd foryou in that offense and it wouldn't miss
a beat. So yeah, it'sa pipe dream at eighteen. But again,
so the two guys they really wantit would just in my opinion,
Murphy and him, you're probably gonnahave to go up for. But I
think they're both worth going up andtrying to take that shot at with what
they ended on that roster. Iknow you have a lot going on.

(53:59):
I know you get asked to doa lot of these. I have sought
to go find them because it's notquite as easy to find your work as
it used to be. I hopethat changes soon. I appreciate you coming
on man, thanks so much forsure, thanks for me. I have
to do it anytime. You gotit the great Mike Renner. He is

and then get them home now.So but it was a lot of fun.
We do a little watch party atschool and have some of the department

(58:14):
come and see where we're going, and the girls were excited to see that
we're heading out to Vegas next week. Yeah. No, it's it's pretty
cool. So a fifth consecutive Biggieschampionship. Every championship is unique and different.
What what has made this year's championshipunique and different? Well, I
think you know, Georgetown had agreat year this year, so it was

(58:37):
a tight rate all weekend to comehome with the championship. And you know,
we we've had solid play throughout ourlineup this year, so going into
it a little bit with the unknownof not knowing who was going to step
up for you, but hoping somebodywould do that for you. And obviously,

(58:58):
Emma Welch wills him away with thatvictory fourth individually, which really propelled
us to a team victory. Solet's talk about Emma Welch, who is
from Minnesota. She wins the tournament. This was her first collegiate tournament title
and only her second ever top ten, So she's obviously a terrific golfer.

(59:19):
But what was it about this weekendthat allowed her to take her play to
another level? Yeah, she's beenworking forwards this all season. I really
feel like she had an awesome summerup in Minnesota last summer and that really
helped her get her confidence back, started striking the ball a lot better,
and she's always been one of thetop cutters in our program. So when

(59:40):
she combined her putting with some goodball striking, she's really had a good
season for us. And she couldn'tShe hadn't quite put together a full tournament
to really get a top finish, and this weekend she was able to do
that. And obviously she showed justhow deep she take it around and then

(01:00:00):
to be able to do it throughthree days and come home with a victory
was really exciting to see and I'msure is only going to continue to further
pump up that confidence that she's beengaining all season. Can you explain how
the NCAA Golf tournament works. Yes, So we're unique in that we have

(01:00:21):
a regional phase. So they justdid the selection show. We have six
sites and we've got seventy two teamsat those six sites along with individuals,
and everybody will compete at the regionallevel, and then the top five teams
along with the top individual outside ofthose teams, will advance to the NCUBLEA

(01:00:44):
Championship. And then when you getto THEA Championship, everybody competes for four
days in stroke play and they crownan individual champion out of those four days,
and then the top eight teams willgo on to mass play and they'll
played max play until they're down tothe NCAA champion. Brianna Jenco is with

(01:01:08):
us, the head coach of theXavier women's golf program, May sixth through
eighth, competing in the NCAA Regionalsin Las Vegas. That just announced about
two and a half hours ago.You have built a dynasty five straight big
eiaest championships. Kind of walked methrough this process. You took this job
you were only two years out ofschool, So how did you go from

(01:01:30):
being close to the same age asthe players that you're coaching to building such
a terrific program in the Big East. I mean, I've had a ton
of holp from my dad who's nowmy volunteer assistant, my previous coach,
Tom Elfers, who just retired fromthe program before I took over. You

(01:01:53):
know, him and his wife wantedto travel more and so that was kind
of the reason he stepped aside. But he from Greg Christopher, I think
before he hired me that he wouldhelp me out, and he's certainly done
a ton for me. But Ialso had the two years at Akron too
and learning under Jenny Keying up thereand learned a ton while I was up

(01:02:13):
there, and was bursting at thescenes to put some things into play and
see how they would work out.And I'm a very data driven person,
so I've loved having stats and beingable to take those stats and build practices
around them. And I think abig part of our overall program is just

(01:02:35):
the team dynamic and the culture, and we're really focused on building individuals as
students, golfers and people. AndI think when we stay very focused on
that process, the winning just kindof comes along with it. And then
we've obviously had great players that havebought into that mindset and then passed those
values down to the younger players. So now we're talking about it being able

(01:02:59):
to fans and generations, and Ireally think, you know, our former
players who bought in and saw theprocess pay off for them, have really
helped pave the way for these futurechampionships. How often does like a goofball
like me who wants to be goodat golf ask you for a lesson,
even if it's like something impromptu whenthey first meet you. I get thrown

(01:03:22):
out there every now and then. When I first started, I was doing
a little bit of them on theside, But now that I've got a
family of my own, I've I'vekind of stepped away from doing that and
just focusing on the kids in ourprogram. But yeah, I hear that
quite a bit. Or I'll alsohear somebody put but score or how they
had a hole in one and theyhave only played five times. So those

(01:03:42):
are some of the big you know, Oh you golf, here's what I
can tell you about golf. Yeah, I bet you that's I bet you
that's a blast. But by theway, like a golf trip to Vegas
if you mean, do you needanybody to work the bag for any of
your players? I could do that. Unfortunately I do caddies, but you're
welcome to come out as a fanand come out don we'd love that to

(01:04:05):
drive the van around Vegas and loadthe bags in the van. I could
do that. They go and thenyou can go take your money to the
casino and then come pick us up. That sounds actually sounds pretty good.
I might work on that. Congratulationson a fifth consecutive Big East Championship.
Will be watching in Vegas starting onthe sixth, and you've built a terrific

(01:04:27):
program. I know today is busy, you have a lot going on,
so I do appreciate you carving outsome time. Coach, thanks so much,
Thanks for having me. It's fun, you got it. Brianna Jenko
is the head coach of the Xavierwomen's golf program. Five consecutive Big East
Championships, and they'll play in theLas Vegas Regional. Like there are folks
who pay lots of money and paylots of money to like ship their clubs

(01:04:51):
out to Vegas, and they're inVegas and they play three rounds and you
have to like mortgage your house.Xavier's women's golf team is going to that
and they don't have to pay forit. That's that's pretty damn cool.
It is a quarter to five.My name is Maegger. Five point three
seven four nine, fifteen thirty.Uh, the fun of watching Ellie Dela

(01:05:11):
Cruz grow coming up at five ohfive on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station,
by a score of one nothing. That game is in the bottom of
the third inning in Anaheim Mettley theGiants three nothing in San Francisco Top four.
Earlier today, it was the Cardinalswinning, beating the Diamondbacks by a
score of five to one. Thatguy asked the question, I I come

(01:05:34):
up with an answer, don't doyou have? Do you have the log
up in there? Do I havethe log? Yeah? We'll see what
it says in there under our nextsegment, under our next segment, hang
on or what's coming up next?Oh? Brenderman and Jones on baseball?
Yes? Yeah, do you seewhat I see? A fifty one minute

(01:06:04):
Brenneman and Jones, Show's over,Show's over, gotta go. Did someone
not edit Brendaman and Jones? I'mnot sure you know tarn. There are
folks that I have worked with,no one full time on this show who
would not have noticed that in advanceand just let that bad boy roll.
And there are hosts I have workedwith that would have let you do it.

(01:06:28):
Uh well, we're not going toplay fifty one minutes of Brendaman and
Jones on baseball, but we couldif we wanted to, and most would
argue that that is probably better thananything that I have. Uh yeah,
it's probably. It's probably you getall the off air banter, you get
all the Marty and Tracy banter betweenshows. That would be good. It
would also get our license revoked.Tomorrow we are broadcasting from Long Necks in

(01:06:55):
Wilder from three to six. Bythe way, today's show is the service
of Zimmer Tracker. Tomorrow also aservice service of Zimmer Tractor. We're broadcasting
from Long Necks and Wilder three tosix. It's our our annual draft show.
James Orpene's gonna join us. Iasked him to be with us for
an hour, but I'm gonna dothat radio trick where like I keep asking
him to stick around until finally he'son to me. And the real key

(01:07:18):
to this is James. You know, really you never see or hear or
read him anywhere, and so we'regonna give him a chance to shine tomorrow.
We also have some cool prizes thanksto Budweiser, and it's gonna be
a blast Long Necks and Wilder, which I mean, you think of everything
happening this weekend, from the draftto the Reds are on the road this

(01:07:39):
weekend. You got the NBA Playoffs, You've got the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
and other stuff too. You watchit all at Long Next and if it
ever stops being forty eight degrees atnight, get an outdoor patio and you
can post up and have a coupleof cold ones and watch whatever you want.
But we'll be there tomorrow from athree to six, and we hope

(01:08:00):
to see you there. Long Nextin Wilder, uh Brenneman and Jones on

(01:09:06):
Probably in my future, Red's andPhillies Tonight. Today's show is also
a service of Zimmer Tractor. Weare loaded. We have been loaded all
week long. Some awesome stuff fromMike Renner. I love getting all these
draft analysts on. I don't getthem on just to get them on.
I get them on because I thinkthey can provide perspective and information that's valuable

(01:09:29):
to you and valuable to my audience. And maybe you have already made up
your mind. For me personally,I love reading and talking and listening to
people and then forming an opinion becauseI'm willing to admit when there is something
that more people know more about thanme. And draft prospects that's on the

(01:09:49):
long list of things that you couldsay that about and so have. I
also believe in consistency, and I'mI'm I'm achieving consistency because I'm all in
on Byron Murphy. We'll get tomore on that coming up in just a
bit. Reds do win. Lastnight they did it. Andrew Abbott pitched
okay, Fernando Cruz and the bullpenbetter than okay. David Bell better than

(01:10:15):
okay. He knew right when tocall on Fernando Cruz. Last night,
they get out of a basis loaded, no out situation in the fifth they
cruise to an eight to one win. It cannot be understated how good this
bullpen has been. You cannot understatethe importance of this bullpen being good because
starting pitching is yet to be astrength. It might be getting there.

(01:10:40):
I like a lot of these guys. But if the Reds are gonna win
the division, or if the Redsare gonna have any chance of competing in
the division. Bullpen has to bean even bigger reason why than the reason
why they won eighty two games lastyear. We've seen some great relief work
over the last week or so.Ellie Dela Cruz was awesome last night.
You know how this works, right, Ellie has a good game and I

(01:11:01):
talk about it in the field onthe bases with his bat, he now
has twelve stolen bases. That oppositefield home run he hit last night was
the sort of ball that, frankly, not a ton of guys can hit.
He made some beautiful plays in thefield, including a catchdown the left
field line where he covers one hundredand twelve feet And by the way,

(01:11:26):
you know, it's not the firsttime he's done that this year, and
every time he does it, Ido think about the amount of ground that
he could cover if he was playingcenter field. But that's not gonna happen
for a very long time. Redswin last night. Reds are thirteen and
ten. They've avoided the slow start. They have a bunch of really good
games in front of them. Ifeel today about the Reds final win loss

(01:11:46):
total that I feel the same waytoday as I did right before opening Day.
I don't know. I don't know. You could have told me before
Opening Day they were gonna win ninetygames. I would have said, not
likely but plausible. Still feel thatway. And you would have told me
they could lose ninety games, andI wouldn't have thought that that was likely
but plausible. I don't know.It's too early to say. I don't

(01:12:10):
know. They've at least avoided theslow start, but I don't know.
It's not definitive. It's not veryhot take ye, I don't know.
Here's what I do know that thiscan still be a season regardless of where
the Reds end up in the NLCentral standings, or if they end up

(01:12:30):
in the postseason, or if theyadvance in the postseason, where I think
you can get a great amount ofjoy out of watching some of these guys
develop, Like I still believe it'sgonna be fun to watch Hunter Green this
year. It feels like a lotof people hate watch Hunter Green, and
I certainly have my frustrations watching him, but there's still enough upside that I

(01:12:57):
think it's gonna be a lot offun watching him too. W him continue
to grow and he's not growing atthe rate that we would like. I
get that he's not without his momentsof frustration. Certainly could say that about
a lot of guys. But Istill think this year is going to be
a lot of fun to watch himdevelop. I wish we were watching the
continued development of Noelve Marte and MattMcClain, Christian and Carnascio Strand. By

(01:13:20):
the way, last night a verybig game. But the Ellie Dela Cruz
things, it's fun to follow theresults. It's fun that the results matter
more than they did at this timea year ago, and certainly more than
they did in twenty twenty two.But regardless of how this season ends up,

(01:13:43):
and really regardless of what you thinkEllie's ultimate ceiling is, it is
for me at least a lot offun to just watch him grow into the
role. And sometimes that growth comeswith hiccups. Sometimes that growth comes with

(01:14:04):
moments where you get really frustrated. But you know, growth is equal to
development, is equal to maturity,is equal to kind of just getting it,
and it's it's a lot of funto watch someone just kind of get
it. I've never really had theopportunity to coach and maybe I will one

(01:14:29):
day to coach a sport. MaybeI'll have a chance to coach my daughter
in something. But I've always thoughtlike it's got to be so much fun
to be a coach and so rewardingto be a coach despite all the crap
you have to put up with towatch like players that you're coaching, watch
them just kind of slowly or insome cases overnight, just get it.

(01:14:50):
Like I have a daughter who's goingto be seven years old here in about
three and a half weeks, andman, there there are moments that are
that frustra there are moments that makeyou mad that there are there are moments
where it's like I'm not going tobe able to do this. There are
moments of disappointment, there are momentsof sadness, there are moments of anger
and frustration. But there's also thatalso gets outweighed by just seeing her learn

(01:15:16):
and like it's hokey and stupid asit might sound, like I come home
and she tells me not even likehere's what I learned in school today,
but she'll use a word that shehas used or just start explaining something that
she learned in a in a mathclass or something like that's awesome. We're
watching her get it when it comesto just socializing and even athletically a little

(01:15:39):
bit. Just just watching that developmentis awesome. And I never understood that
before I had kids. I onlyhave one. It's not the same by
any stretch of the imagination. Butbeing a baseball fan, being a Reds
fan and watching the team on aday in a day out basis, you
know, with Ellie specifically, andlook, he's the guy that the spotlight

(01:16:00):
is projected onto the most. That'sjust how it is, right or wrong.
And yeah, man, there aremoments that are really frustrating, you
know, the game in Philadelphia, some of the at bats that he has
even last year, watching him justflail away, it can be frustrating and
maddening and you want to beat yourhead into a wall and it's it's tough.

(01:16:24):
But along with that is watching himgrow as a fielder, Like I
think he's a better defensive shortstop rightnow than he was last year, at
any point last season and even earlierthis year, watching him maybe grow from
that game in Philadelphia where he wascriticized and justifiably so, for his effort,
watching him make improvements as a baserunner. And look, there are

(01:16:45):
the moments like the out that hemade at third base was it last week?
And you kind of just take ita They're gonna gamble a little bit
when you have a guy that's thisfast, watching him grow as a hitter.
The home run that he hit lastnight, I don't think is the
sort of home I don't think it'sa sort of at batter home run that
he hits a year ago. Watchinghim just get better is a lot of

(01:17:10):
fun. Man. It's like peopletalk about in college basketball. I like
what college basketball is like right now. I like it. I like free
agency in college basketball. I likethe players having the chance to move as
much as they want. I lovethem getting paid. If you want to
tell me there should be guardrails, okay, but I want those guardrails to

(01:17:30):
still be not very restrictive. ButI will say that it has I don't
want to say deprived us, butit has. It has put a limitation
on watching college basketball players evolve overfour or five years. And I will
say that I have always enjoyed thatabout the sport. I'm a big UC

(01:17:53):
Bearcat fan, and so you know, watching a player go from what they
were their freshman year to what theymight be their junior or I loved Eric
Hicks. Eric Kicks his freshman yearcouldn't walk. Kenyan Martin's freshman year,
you couldn't put him in a game. Eric Kicks turned into one of the
most beloved players ever, a greattwo way player, and Kenyon Martin is

(01:18:15):
a legend number one pick in theNBA draft. Just watching that in real
time was awesome. Sometimes you watchit with players who don't even come close
to that level of achievement. Imiss that. You could watch it in
Major League Baseball, and it's morefun when it coincides with winning, and
it's it's more fun when there's acorrelation between that growth and winning. But

(01:18:36):
even in a year like this, let's be honest, the chances of the
Reds winning the National League Central theyexist. They're not favored. There's a
chance this team loses more than itwins. I hope that doesn't happen if
you are solely watching this season throughthat lens though of postseason or Bust ninety

(01:18:59):
one, or Bust get to theplayoffs, win the National League Central or
Bust advance in the postseason, orbust. If you're solely focused on the
outcome, I think you're gonna missa lot of the good stuff. And
with Ellie, just over the lastcouple of weeks, there's been so much
good stuff. He's not a finishedproduct. I'm sure he's got slumps in

(01:19:20):
front of him. I'm sure he'sgot moments that just make it's okay.
It's growth, it's part of theprocess. But man, you get the
good stuff. The good stuff iswatching him catch that ball down the left
field line last night. The goodstuff is watching him just create havoc with
his legs force throwing errors. Hehad a ball in that series against the

(01:19:42):
Mets where he grounded out. Ithink it was against the Mets where he
grounded out to second base and madethe second basement hurry and barely beat him
by a step. Like just stufflike that, the pitch he had out
of the ballpark last night, Imaybe enjoy that more. If you want
to spend every waking moment of yearlife losing your mind over David Bell's lineups,

(01:20:04):
I'm just I think we're going tobe exhausted by Mother's Day. That's
not to say that the lineup isinconsequential. It is Ellie, by the
way, is batting second tonight,But like I have found myself falling into
the trap of just okay, here'sthe lineup, let's lose our mind.
I don't know, man, I'drather focus on watching some of these guys

(01:20:24):
grow into the roles that they eventuallyfill. And that's not just Ellie Dela
Cruz. And it can't just beElie Dela Cruz. But for me,
at least, it starts with him, watching him go from a dude who
took the league by storm last Juneto a guy who was almost non playable
in September, to a guy whomade some mistakes early this year to a

(01:20:45):
guy who's made some adjustments now aguy who's a very Can you imagine where
the Reds would be right now withouthim? Let me just look at who
they don't have, look at thepoor off seasons at least so far that
so many players are having. Imaginethis year's team without them, and then
think of what that growth is goingto end up looking like two months from

(01:21:09):
now. We're a year from now. That's a lot of fun to think
about. Man, I'm gonna dothat. Let everybody else lose their mind
every single day. And look,by the way, we did this with
Dusty Baker. This is a Twitterthing. I'm old enough to remember when
at five point twenty in the afternoonyou had no idea what the starting lineup
was until game time. But now, because it's out there on social media

(01:21:31):
by three o'clock, we spend entireafternoons losing our mind. We did it
with Dusty, We did it withBrian Price, we did it with Jim
Riggleman. We're doing it with Davidbell I. After a while, it's
exhausting. What's not exhausting is watchingEli Dela Cruz grow nineteen after five.
If you disagree, you're welcome totell me. Five point three seven,

(01:21:55):
four nine, fifteen thirty, we'regonna talk injuries with our buddy, doctor
Mark you from worthos Cincia. Oneof his thoughts on Frankie Montas and if
we should really believe he's only goingto miss a couple of starts, and
the more extensive than originally thought anklesurgery that Sam Hubbard underwent. We'll get
to that coming up at five thirtythree. On top of a couple of

(01:22:16):
other injury issues as well. We'lladdress our poll question, which is available

you'll hear Lewis Riddick from earlier todayon SINCY three to sixty on the Bengals
and the Draft. It's the fiveo'clock Happy Hour thanks to Michelo Boltra.
Today's show is also brought to youby Zimmer Tractor. It's twenty minutes after
five o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnatisports station iHeartRadio app. Not just from

(01:23:03):
this show, but since he threesixty as well. Earlier today on SINCY
three sixty, Tony and Austin hadLewis Riddick on ESPN NFL analyst who does
a fantastic job. You could hearthis interview in its entirety on the app.
Are also the podcast page, buthere's a snippet if you will a
cut a highlight. Here's part ofthe conversation that was had earlier today on

(01:23:28):
sin since he three to sixty,I can't talk since he three sixty with
ESPN Draft analyst, ESPN NFL analystand former Pitt Panther Lewis Riddick. When
you look at eighteen for the Bengalsright now, a lot of oz here
obviously in Cincinnati, tackle makes alot of sense, Interior defensive lineman makes
a lot of sense. Some aresaying wide receiver. There's even been a

(01:23:50):
run here as of late that cornercould be an option for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Without diving into the player itself. If you're the Bengals and you know
what this roster is made up of, what position makes the most sense at
eighteen? Yeah, that's a greatquestion. I think here the one even
though it seems like this is youknow, the cop out answer, but

(01:24:11):
it's the honest answer, and theboard has to talk to you right there.
Cokay, So look those three positions. If you look at defensive tackle
off as a tackle, cornerback. You know, for me and my training
in my years, the question isthis, of those three positions, is
there someone who was sticking out thatpresents obvious value, or if there are
three similarly graded players at those acrossthose three positions, what position do you

(01:24:35):
prioritize the most? What position ismost critical to you in terms of the
overall twenty two men, you know, twenty two positions on a football team
outside of the specialists. So ifyou say cornerback is the number one priority,
and given what Cincinnati struggled with lastyear with explosive plays down the field,
then maybe corner is the move.If you feel as though, hey,

(01:24:55):
look, we still aren't good enoughon the edges that offensive tackle,
despite you know, signing Trent havingOrlando, we still need to like kind
of shore up that pass block runright, then maybe tackle is the is
the way you go. You know, they need into your pass rush to
help Sam and Trey out on theedges. So you know, if Byron
Murphy is sitting there or Darius Robins, well he'll be there too. You

(01:25:17):
go, hey, maybe we gowith one of those. It makes it
fascinating to them. What would Ido? Look, I believe that you
build your football team inside out,and you build it front to back,
And I'm sure Lou would say, hey, look, maybe if we had
more juice, especially in the middleto help out our edge Russians. Maybe
some of that explosive play component wouldbe alleviated. Would you know that would
come down? So if you believethe guy like Byron Murphy could be just

(01:25:41):
one hell of a three pass rushingthree technique and he's sitting there, maybe
that's the move you go to.Although there are some fantastic corners in this
draft that can play the style ofman and man coverage that lou loves,
and there'll be some there'll be sometackle value as well. But so that
I mean, since he has anumber of different directions you can go,
I would opt for the defensive tacklethough, So now I feel even better.

(01:26:05):
I'm all in on Byron Murphy.More of that conversation available on the
iHeartRadio app five o'clock Happy Hours, the service of Micheloibultra. Come have a
mickeloa Ultra tomorrow with us at LongNecks in Wilder where they're from three to
six. It's gonna be awesome.Frankie Montas I think dodged the bullet after

(01:26:26):
taking a liner off his right elbow. Sam Hubbard had ankle surgery that was
a little bit more involved than perhapswas originally forecast. We'll talk about those
two and more. We'll get ourweekly Orthos Cincy injury update when we come
back. Our show today is aservice of Zimmer Tractor. I'm Malager.
It's five thirty on ESPN fifteen thirtyCincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati's It's going on

(01:26:53):
in Baseball getting ESPN fifteen thirty fromiHeartRadio. All right, we tee this
on Wednesdays. We talk injuries thistime of year. Obviously a lot of
baseball injuries, but we've got anNFL injury of Bengals injury to talk about.
Doctor Mark Uhas from Orthos since heis with us. What we love
about Orthos since he is, Theyhave specialists and locations all over the Try

(01:27:15):
State and you never need an appointment, and they have extended evening and weekend
hours at both Edgewood and Anderson. You can learn more at Orthosinc dot com.
That's Orthos ci Ncy dot com.Doctor Mark Ujas from Ortho since he
is with us. Frankie Montas,I think he dodged a bullet, and
by extension, the Reds have aswell. He took that line drive off

(01:27:39):
his right elbow on Sunday. Weall fear the worst. It looks like
the worst case scenario is not thescenario we are dealing with, but it's
gonna miss a couple of starts. At least. He has gone on the
fifteen day injured list. He's dealingwith a right forearm contusion. Let's begin
by I'm gonna ask you to explainto me the different types and great of

(01:28:00):
contusions. Yeah, absolutely, well, thanks for having me mo. Yeah,
those injuries can be, you know, quite frightening to see because they
happen so quickly and you just don'tknow sort of the extent of the injury
until things are evaluated. So acontusion is, you know, another name
for a bruise, and sure,a bruise sounds like a pretty simple thing.
But depending on the location of acontusion, how much swelling there is,

(01:28:25):
you know, whether it's located neara joint, near other structures.
That's kind of how we grade them. So there are some are more severe
than others, more mild, moderate, and severe, I guess you could
call them, But it really dependson how much pain a patient's having or
an athlete, where they're located andkind of you know, whether they're near
a joint or other structures as well. Is the timeline here, does that

(01:28:48):
make sense? It's a fifteen dayinjured list in Obviously that doesn't mean he's
going to come back in fifteen days, but the prevailing I guess the prevailing
sentiment is he's only going to misstwo or three starts based on what you've
seen and what we know. Doesthat make sense? Well? I think
so. And you know, really, when we're trying to guide an athlete

(01:29:08):
back with this type of injury, usually it is based on some feedback about
how much pain they're experiencing. Asthey start to, you know, improve
their movement and their activity, I'msure there'll be a progression of throwing and
other things. And when you haveruising or contusion that involves swelling, and
the structures that are affected are thingsthat help us to move, and those

(01:29:33):
structures require blood flow and increased activity. So it makes sense that we want
the swelling to go down around thosethings before we try to move too quickly,
or else you might end up inthe same boat of kind of still
having pain and swelling and kind ofgoing around in a cycle that you don't
want. So yes, that doesmake sense as far as the timing is,

(01:29:54):
is the treatment just simply rest. Are there things they do between now
and hopefully when he comes back ina couple of weeks. Yes, I
think the rest is certainly a partof it. And you know there are
the basic anti inflammatory medications, icing, you know, compression, All of
these things can help to reduce swellingand inflammation. Therapists will typically offer some

(01:30:16):
other types of as we call modalities, but things that can help to get
the swelling down. But rest iscertainly important part of it, and we
like to distinguish rest. Sometimes thatmeans not being too active with the forces
that we use with that particular armor whatever we're healing, but also we
want it to move, so wewant to move it, but don't use

(01:30:38):
it too quickly. If that makessense, No, it totally makes sense.
Let's talk about Ian Jabou, whois going to resume his rehab assignment
in Louisville, which is really good. He is a guy, that boy.
They leaned on him heavily last year. He was shut down during spring
training. The initial thought was thisisn't serious. They put him on the
injured list to start the season. The idea was he would come back maybe

(01:30:59):
sometime the second week of April. He goes on a rehab assignment and then
he's dealing with more forearm discomfort. He gets a cortizone injection, he rests
for a couple of days. Hehas started playing catch. They've sent it
back to Louisville. The injury itselfis being called something I've never heard of,
a pronators train. What is that? Yeah, so the pronator is

(01:31:21):
it's a There are several different componentsto the pronator muscle, but it's a
muscle in the forearm that typically it'sa deeper muscle. It attaches near the
inside part of the forearm as welland near the elbow, and it helps
us to rotate. It helps usto rotate and move the wrist in the
forearm in certain ways. It feelslike on a daily basis. At the

(01:31:44):
end of spring training, I wasreading about guys with forearm issues. You
know, just given the fact thatthese guys have access to sophisticated training,
everything they do is so closely monitored. Is is there something you can point
to as to why we had somany of these late in spring training.
I don't think there's one specific thingit's a hard you know, it's a
hard question to pinpoint. I'm surethere's there's lots of heads that are coming

(01:32:08):
together to try to figure that out. Every spring training, it seems like,
you know, there's there's just andthere's an emphasis placed on ramping up
appropriately, you know, not overthrowingor not doing too much, and that
that's kind of at all levels ofbaseball. And and I think that that's
certainly important, but that's been aroundfor a while. I think the athletes

(01:32:30):
are just continuing to get better andbetter and stronger. Velocity increases the spin
rate of the balls, and youknow, specifically we were talking about the
pronator and you know, the rotationof the forearm that that's putting more stress
on it with with breaking balls andspin. But all of those things lead
to it, you know, propermechanics. Maybe there's some adjustments that need

(01:32:53):
to be made. But but Ithink that this the level and the demand
of the throwing certainly plays a role. I don't know the perfect answer about
why there are more injuries. Ido know that after spring training, you
know, it typically you know,is usually increased, whether that's you know,
just just an increased demand that Youcan mimic it all you want in

(01:33:13):
the off season, but you stillhave to kind of do the live batting,
and that just tends to lead tosome more injuries. You know.
Doctor Mark Uhas from Orthosinsia is withus one more red TJ. Friedel.
We are hoping that maybe within thenext three or four weeks we can see
him back in the starting lineup. He suffered a non displaced right risk fracture
during spring training, and uh,they kind of ramped him down a little

(01:33:35):
bit because they kind of felt likehe was pushing himself. And he is
ramping back up again. He isswinging again, and you read that they're
trying to build up TJ's arm strength. What goes into that process? Yeah,
so I think that when it comesto the type of you know break,
if we talk about a non displacethat's a that's a well aligned break

(01:33:57):
or a fracture in the in thearm. So sometimes those are you know,
even hard to see on an Xray. The body needs time to
just heal the bone. But ifit's in good alignment and X rays and
you know, our exam shows thatthe bone is healing, then we start
to progress some you know, activities. Usually progressing strength first starts with getting

(01:34:19):
motion back, and our hand therapistswill always say that you really can't get
strength until you get motion. Soit's really important to first start the athlete
or the patient with coming out ofwhatever brace or cast or whatever it is,
to start moving, and then asthat starts to move more naturally,
then we start to build some ofthe tending strength, some of the coordination

(01:34:41):
with some of those small muscles inthe hand and wrist and forearm, and
it usually comes along sort of ina natural progression after that. One more.
It's actually Sam Hubbard of the Bengals. So a guy who missed a
couple of games in twenty twenty three, came back late in the season.
He was not one hundred percent. He had ankle surgery in the off season.
Reading this week at ESPN dot comthat the surgery was more severe or

(01:35:04):
the injury was more severe than wasoriginally thought, and so the procedure he
had was he had tightrope surgery anda deltoid procedure. He is rehabbing well
on course to start training camp inthe season on time. What type of
ankle injury requires tightrope surgery? Yeah. So typically, what we would refer

(01:35:28):
to as a high ankle sprain mostcommonly are the ones that would require a
tightrope surgery. And the type ropeis basically a device that used to help
to stabilize a specific ligament in theankle. There's the fibula and the tibia
or the main bones that kind ofmake up the lower leg and the ankle,

(01:35:49):
and that device is most commonly usedto kind of stabilize some of those
ligaments that are in between those bones. It can be used to also like
augment or help support other repairs thatare done with some of those ankle ligaments
as well. Uh does this timelinetrack to suggest that he'll be able to
start the season on time? Well? Yeah, I think so usually,

(01:36:13):
you know, with these types ofankle injuries, I mean, it obviously
depends on severity and each one isdifferent, but somewhere between four and six
months typically is about the you know, the right the right timeline. Maybe
maybe a little bit less than that, but certainly you know that that sounds
appropriate. Yeah, lots to discussawesome inside. As always, Doctor Mark

(01:36:33):

dot com. Uh oh, sportsnews here you go, all right,
we haven't used that in a while. We do have some breaking sports news.
Trey Hendrickson, according to ESPN's AdamSchefter, has requested to be traded
from Cincinnati. Schefter says that Hendricksonis looking for more long term security than
the Bengals have been willing to offerto this point. Now it's worth mentioning

(01:37:49):
he is under contract through twenty twentyfive, so he's on the hook for
this year and next. You mightremember when Trey Hendrickson came to Cincinna that
was originally under a four year contract, and then about a year ago,
maybe a little bit less than ayear ago, Bengals signed him to a
one year contract extension. Now,since then, Trey had an unbelievable twenty

(01:38:13):
twenty three. He was terrific lastyear, and so you could kind of
understand, wait a minute, Ijust had a great season. I'm looking
for more. There's I'm sure apart of him that's going. Man,
I should have bet on myself andnot signed the extension through twenty five,
had the great year and then andthen asked for an extension on top of
the deal that would have expired atthe end of the twenty twenty four season.
But this is now two Bengals thisoffseason that have requested trades, obviously

(01:38:38):
t Higgins being one, Trey Hendricksonwould be the other. This according to
ESPN's Adam Schefter, who put onX about ten minutes ago that Trey Hendrickson
has requested to be traded from Cincinnati. I would say good luck with that.
This is not something you know,as we've talked about often with t
Higgins and last year Jonah Williams, you requested trade from the Bengals, and

(01:39:00):
the Bengals typically not and go okay. I don't blame either side here.
Trey had a terrific twenty twenty three, played in every game, seventeen and
a half sacks, unbelievable year, underrated season relative to how much we talk
about other players at the same position. I'm not sure that he should have

(01:39:20):
been in the defensive player of theYear conversation, but he had a terrific
season, and so you can't blameanybody coming off a terrific season for wanting
to capitalize on it. At thesame time, number one, he did
sign a contract extension through twenty twentyfive. Number Two, he does turn

(01:39:41):
thirty before the end of twenty twentyfour. We've talked often about how the
Bengals just are not that interested insigning players beyond the age of thirty.
They have him on the hook fortwo more years. I can't blame Trey.
At the same time, if I'mDuke Tobin, if I'm the Brown
family, I'm going wait a minute. I've got him under contract for this

(01:40:04):
year, his age twenty nine season. He turns thirty in December, and
I've got him under contract for twentytwenty five. Am I really that interested
in locking him up for his agethirty one or thirty two or thirty three
season. I mean the answer isprobably no. And so this is gonna

(01:40:24):
get a lot of headlines. Icannot imagine that the Bengals are gonna suddenly
go, yeah, Okay, we'regonna take our best edge rusher in a
season in which we're trying to winthe super Bowl, and we're gonna trade
him when we've got him under contractfor two years. Could be dead wrong
about that. I just the historyof this franchise. They're not trading players

(01:40:45):
in their prime. They didn't doit with Jonah Williams a year ago.
They haven't done it yet with tHiggins. They didn't do it with Carson
Palmer until well, he was elevenmonths into a holdout and was never going
to play for them again in twoeven so this is interesting to talk about
it again. I don't think thatthere's a wrong side here. If I'm

(01:41:08):
Trey Hendrickson, I want a longerterm deal than what I am. Sure,
right, I'm coming off a careerseason. I want to get paid
more than I already am. Iwant a longer term deal. I want
more of a commitment. And ifyou're the Bengals, yeah, man,
we've got you for this year, and we got you for two thousand and

(01:41:29):
twenty five. I thought the wholeidea behind signing the one year extension was
we're going to extend the current dealand then let's see what happens between now
and the end of the twenty twentyfive season. I'm sure it's not totally
beyond the realm of possibility that ifTrey had another big season in twenty twenty
four, then with a year lefton the deal, they go to him

(01:41:50):
and say, let's extend it evenmore. But you're looking for a contract
for twenty twenty six. That is, quite frankly, forever a while.
And as much as we all loveTrey as terrific of a player as he
is and has been since he gothere, one of the cornerstones to the

(01:42:11):
last three years, I don't necessarilythink the Bengals are I know how this
is going to get portrayed by manybecause it's a lazy narrative that some can't
stop clinging to. It's the cheapBengals, It's the antiquated Bengals. It's
the Bengals who don't take care oftheir It's the Bengals who don't take care
of their own. I don't thinkthis is it. I think this is

(01:42:33):
all right. You know, wewere not really in the third contracts.
We're not really into paying players beyondthe age of thirty. We've got one
that we've committed to through his agethirty season. We've got a lot of
money that we're going to be payingto Jamar Chase. Joe Burrow's going to
be making more money. We're gonnahave to get younger at certain positions.
And so my guess is the endgamehere is Trey Hendrickson issues his request,

(01:42:57):
the Bengals don't honor it, andthen if Trey wants to choose to miss
paychecks during a holdout during the season, good luck. If he wants to
get fined. The difference between TreyHendrickson and t Higgins. Trey Hendrickson is
under contract for twenty twenty four.T Higgins until he signs the franchise tag
contract is not under contract with theBengals, so he can hold out and

(01:43:23):
he doesn't get fined. Trey Hendricksonholds out, he's under contract, he
gets fined. That might not deterhim, but uh, this is it's
another interesting dynamic, and for me, it's just sort of the cost of
having a bunch of really good players. Trey's not wrong, the Bengals aren't
wrong. We'll see how this unfoldsin the coming weeks. The NFL Draft

(01:43:47):
