(00:00):
All right, before we talk aboutRudy and how bad of a movie it

(00:03):
is, you did your three roundmob draft and you say the Bengals have
to take Byron Murphy. Do youthink he's going to be there? I
do? Okay, so right, you've seen it last week. There'd just
be a ton of smoke from nationalreporters about, you know, how Byron
Murphy is shooting up draft boards.I thought something most recently from Daniel and

(00:25):
Cheremiah that to me makes more sense, and that is I think that the
run on tackles is going to bethe only reason Byron Murphy is available to
Bengals at pick eighteen. But thepick that people really need to keep an
eye on in terms of if ByronMurphy is going to be there is New
Orleans. I think that they dohave a need for an interior defensive lineman.

(00:50):
And then Seattle. Seattle's the oneand they pick right before the Bengals.
That's the one where I think hecould potentially go there. But I
could also see Seattle taking the tacklefrom Washington if he's there, or an
edge rusher. But I do thinkByron Murphy is going to slip solely because
I think someone's going to go crazyand jump up to get a quarterback.

(01:12):
Then they're going to go on therun of receivers and then the run of
tackles, And I think the Bengalsare going to luck in to picking Byron
Murphy. Do you think they wouldlike him enough that if Seattle is there
and Byron Murphy is falling and thereare a couple of picks away, that
the Bengals would maybe try to tradeup to get them. So that was

(01:33):
my biggest question yesterday and it stemmedfrom a comment that Bengals director of college
Scouting Mike pots made in its pressconference, and he said, we understand
the urgency in needing to win now. And the reason I bring that up
is because we've all mocked tackles tothe Bengals, right like, that's clearly

(01:53):
a need for them, and everybodywants to talk about they need to secure
a long term answer. If youlisten to Mike Potts, he would make
you believe that maybe for once, they would consider it, because if you
ask me, what is the Bengals'sbiggest positional need right now, it's they
don't have a shore fire starter atnose tackle that can plug the middle and

(02:19):
stop the run, like forget aboutwhat he can do as a pass rusher.
If the Bengals started the season tomorrowand didn't fill that need, it
would be hard to pick them ingames where teams are going to run the
ball. So I think, basedoff of Mike's comments yesterday that I really
do think that they would consider thisyear because things have changed with Zach Taylor

(02:43):
and his ability to be able tocommunicate with Mike Brown things that he needs
that the Bengals haven't given him inthe past. I really think that if
they get the sense that Seattle reallycould take Byron Murphy, I think they
would be open to a one ortwo pick jump, not anything crazy three
or four picks or they'd have togive up things. But I actually do,

(03:05):
for one stink that they would considerit. There's a big difference between
considering it and then pulling the triggerbecause as we know, you know,
Mike Brown historically hasn't really done that. But I do think yesterday's comments from
Mike Potts lead me to believe thatthey would consider it if it was like
a one or two pick move. All right, so defensive tackle is a
massive need. If he's there, you take him. If he's not there,

(03:30):
you still have to fix defensive tackles. Am I should. I believe
that they can still do that evenif they're addressing that position on Friday or
later. I think, based offof talking to coaches all over the NFL
specifically about the defensive tackle position,I think that if the Bengals don't get

(03:50):
a defensive tackle in the first round, they are going to have to move
up in the second round. Sohonestly, I think it's very likely that
they'll have to move up either oneor night two to ensure that they secure
that defensive tackle position. Because thepeople that really study the tape have told
me there is a massive drop offfrom the top two defensive tackles in this

(04:13):
draft class to the rest. Sothose people that are saying they could just
get one in the third round whoyou could just plug in, from what
I have heard, the class isnot good. It's not deep. So
I think if they want Johnny Newtonand they don't think he's good enough in
it for pick eighteen, I thinkyou either have to decide if you want
to trade back and potentially pick himup a little bit later. But if

(04:36):
you night one, decide you're goingto take a tackle, you better be
prepared to have to go up inround two to get a defensive tackle.
So I think that it's something thatit has to happen in rounds one or
two or else. It would behard for me to give them a good
grade on their draft class if theyfinish rounds one and two without a defensive

(04:59):
tamele. You could read Kelsey's threeround Bengals mock draft at Cincinnati dot Com.
If during this exercise I said toyou, you got to pick somebody
in round one with the eighteenth pick, but it can't be Byron Murphy.
What I assume it's one of thetackles, And if the answer is yes,
who would make the most sense.I'm gonna get crazy here and tell

(05:20):
you it's not a tackle. AndI'm so curious to see this because I
think that's like what everybody's thinking, and they very well could take the fifth
or sixth best tackle. I mean, if Stacy Ladam from Alabama is available,

(05:41):
I think he would one hundred percentbe the pick, but I'm not
sure based off of talking to peoplethat have scouted this offensive line class that
Amarus Mims I know that's going toname mock to the Bengals a lot.
I'm not sure that he's worth thepick at eighteen based off of him only
having eight starts and not really beingenough film to see. And again I

(06:01):
go back to Mike Potts's initial comment, which is they're trying to win now
and Marius Trent Brown wouldn't have signedwith the Bengals had he not been told
he's going to be the starter. He told us he's going to start.
He is going to be the startingright tackle. Sure, you can bring
up he hasn't finished the season injurywhatever, that this pick is potentially going
to play at some point simply becausethey're probably not going to be able to

(06:25):
get through the season without an injury. When you are picking in a year
where you're saying, we're paying tHiggins all this money to try and run
it back, your pick has tobe someone who's going to start right away,
and to me, that's not aMarius Mint. So then you fall
into the category of who who wouldit be then? And I think that

(06:46):
it's not out of the question forthem to consider a cornerback right there.
If some of the better cornerbacks areavailable, and then, of course,
you know, I can't believe I'msaying it, but if one of the
receivers is there, and and itwouldn't be crazy to me to see them
do it if they're truly trying totake the best player available to that.

(07:09):
So I am not going to answeryour question in the sense of I think
they take a tackle. I thinkthat if that run on tackles goes and
Murphy isn't there, I think thatthey either trade back or they take a
corner or a receiver. Where areyou on the brock powers to be?
I think he's going to be longgone, but if he was available at

(07:31):
pick eighteen, to me, thatwould that would make a ton of sense.
And I know a lot of peopleare quick to say, well,
in the Bengals offense, to tightend and play that that big of a
role. You know, I satin every one of Zach Killer's press conference
when he praised Salton Kincaid and SamLaporta and just how outstanding those guys were.

(07:53):
I think that, yes, inthe Bengals current offense, it's structured
around two receivers. But again, you know, we we all kind of
know where things are headed with teain next year that the Bills weren't saying
just because they had Stefan Diggs andgave Davis, hey, we don't need
you know Dalton Kincaid. It's trulywho's the best player available who can come

(08:13):
in and make an impact, Andto me, brock Powers would fit that.
But I seem to get the sensethat he's going to be a top
fifteen pick. But that's what makesfor the Bengals are picking so interesting and
so much fun. Like the lastcouple of years, when they've been picking
in the bottom five, you know, you know that most likely the top
twenty five prospects are going to begone. But this year, I mean,

(08:35):
it could go so many different directionsbased off the run that happens right
in front of the Bengals. SoI think for Bengals fans that are excited
about the draft, like I know, every year it's exciting, but this
one, this year, to meis really interesting because they could really go
a multitude of different directions. Andit's made someone as a beat writer who's
trying to prepare my ten different stories, whether they could go a really long

(09:00):
week from work. Beyond that, because you have to cover all the actual
draft picks. Is your favorite partof the draft when they start signing undrafted
college free agents because they most closelyidentify with five foot six, one hundred
and fifty five pound Rudy Rudiger fromyour favorite all time movie. No,
honestly, because in full transparency, you get to the end of Saturday night

(09:26):
and you're just like, oh mygosh, what a weekend. And you
know at that point you've probably writtenlike fifteen stories. So no, no
discredit to the people that sign asundrafted free agents. But that really doesn't
jazz me up like the full draftweekend does. But my point on Rudy
simply is, you know, heunited the team and everybody wants to root

(09:48):
for Rudy, So I just Idon't understand your disdain towards that Rudy is
whiny. First of all, heabandons his fiance leaves her with the mortgage
so he can go be an overagecollege student. He does this after he
kills his friend Pete because he doesn'tget to the water valve on time.
He creepily stalks the entire city ofSouth Bend with his buddy d Bob,

(10:11):
who doesn't know how to how toapproach women. He breaks He breaks in
and enters Notre Dame Stadium because hehas no place to sleep. Instead of
being upfront about it, he liesabout being a student. He winds all
the time. He quits before hislast game because they won't let him dress,
and he was off sides on thefinal play. What is there to
like about Rudy Rudeger? What adetestable human being that they've romanticized in a

(10:35):
poorly made movie. Are you acritic for Rotten Tomatoes? Because maybe you
should pick that up as a asa side job. Now, well,
uh, maybe I don't know.I don't see enough movies. But I
did see that in the theater andI was with three other guys that movie
came out. I'm much older thanyou. I was in high school,

(10:56):
and these three guys were like inspired, they wanted to go play high school
football again. And I'm like, really that that inspired you? This cheat,
this criminal, this poor fiance, this poor excuse for a guy,
this whiner, this dude who shouldhave been cited for breaking and entering.
That's your inspiration, buddy, Wehave different priorities. Well, you know

(11:18):
that makes me feel better that yourfriends that you originally saw it thought the
same thing as me. So maybeit seems like this is a you problem
with Rudy very much. Is I'mnot saying the movie itself is like terrible.
There's some there's some really cool footballpractice scenes. I'll grant you that.
Oh that's fine. Uh, AndI do think they portray uh,

(11:41):
cloudy, dingy, disgusting, badlooking South Bend in me and quite well,
like I've been to South Bend,I've never seen the sun same as
in that movie. I think thatthat's pretty good. But like Rudy as
an inspiring character, no, notfor me. Okay, Well, I
do have a question. Do youthink that that poll compared to a poll

(12:03):
about what would anger Bengals fans moreabout if the Bangals took a receiver in
the first round or if they tookthe fifth best offensive lineman. Which one
do you think would get more engagement? Receiver? Well, the receiver,
yeah, the receiver, yes, yeah, that. But I feel more
passionately about how much I don't likeRudy than I do the fifth tackle in

(12:26):
the draft. Okay, okay, well we'll reevaluate that if they do take
the fifth best tackle in the draftand in three years you know, he's
not very good. We'll see ifthat may be upset you more than Rudy.
All right, well, we'll see. I always appreciate you coming on.
I know you're very busy over thenext couple of days. I'm sure
i'll bother you after the draft.Thank you as always, absolutely, I

(12:50):
had a blast.
