He's talking about bourbon. And Ilove bourbon, and I love listening to
people who know a lot about bourbontalk about bourbon. It's like for me,
it's like listening to people talk abouthitting right, Like I could listen
to that show that's out there,Ted Williams and Tony Gwynn talking about hitting

all day. I don't know thatmuch about hitting. I know I couldn't
do it, but so I lovelistening to people who are experts and things
that I enjoy talk about them.Brandon will probably scoff at the suggestion that

started calling him Bourbon Brandon, andwe said we were going to try to

his YouTube show and I said thisto him off air that night, I

ended up, like Binge, watchingthree of these. I'm watching him bounce
around liquor stores looking for bourbon.I'm watching him sit at his home bar
talk about different bourbons and terms thatI don't fully understand. And it's really
good. As you can imagine,because he's a TV guy, the production

sort of taking lead and you wereguiding him, and it was it was
kind of interesting. Yeah, Ilove it. I like calling it Batman
and Robin right, Like I'm hisassistant in that case, and I'm looking
at different things that he may notbe seeing. Right. It's always interesting
to me when you have situations likethat, because that's when you guys take
off the coats. Yes, coatscome off. That means things are start
rolling. The sleeves up. Yeah. Yeah, it's kind of a nonverbal

cue, right right, it meanssomething like they don't do that in sports,
Like there's no roll up the sleevesmoment in sports, but in whether
it's roll up the sleeves, takeoff the coats. Well, as a
basketball coach, you might take thecoat off, right like the second half

but but that night, possibly it'sworth wondering if you did right watch
and did the right thing fingers crossed. I think we had nine or ten
tornadoes, no fatalities that I knowof, So in my mind, job
well done. Now, obviously you'dwant no one to suffer loss of life,
get hurt, suffer loss of property. But when you have nights like
that and like you're not talking abouthey it's going to be sixty three overnight

and clear in the morning, likedo you get like as a little adrenaline?
I mean, are you excited?I love college athlete played college football,
huge baseball. Raisou played high schoolbaseball. Was actually a better baseball
player than was a football player.Just injuries led one direction in the other.
But what I say is a severeweather event like that, you run

it. We were on there forthree hours and fifty two minutes. Yeah,
wall the wall. Yeah, sothere's no like break. It's the
most equivalent adrenaline rush that I canget to walking out on a football field
or on a baseball field to competeat the highest level that I ever competed
at. Right, Yeah, youget jassed up, jazzed up, you
get juiced up. You know thatpeople's lives are in your hand. But

that's also part of the job,and that's what you kind of train for
for your entire career. How doesthe decision get made because you guys bumped
into programming for the entire night.How does the decision get made? Who
makes that call that says, look, this is big enough. We're not
just going to pop in and doan update. We're going long for them.
Yeah, it kinda is discussed prior. Each event's different. Some events

here like, Okay, we're probablygonna have one or two storms, and
for the duration of that storm,as long as it looks severe, looks
dangerous, will stay on air.But if it's just a regular severe thunderstorm,
which is fifty eight mile per hourwind gus in one inchail or greater
in both directions, probably not stayingon. But if there's the potential for
that to produce a tornado or insome cases a severe thunderstorm, I kind

of poop pooed the severe thunderstorm warning. And that doesn't mean that it's not
a powerful, powerful storm. It'sjust tornado is top of the charts.
But you can get severe thunderstorms thatare equally as bad as tornado, seventy
five plus mile per hour winds,two to three inch hail. In those
situations, it's like, okay,that's life threatening. We need to stay
and serve the public. But ina tornado event like that, pretty much

once there's a tornado watch issued andwe have a warning in our area or
up to the county out towards ourwest where it's about to move in to
our DMA is what it's called fewlimits heard the viewing area we're on,
we're on action. How many phonecalls do you get from people that are

like, you're interrupting the goldbergs orwhatever. I don't hear the phone calls
because those all go to the frontdesk. Back when I was younger and
in a smaller market where the phonerang in the weather center, right,
I would get a lot more.I don't know if maybe more now because
it's expected or we just aren't hearingit from the people who get off my

long kind of deal. But Iknow there was three or four years ago
awful tornadic activity. Do you likethat term? By the way, tornatic
activity? Y? Yeah, inDayton destroyed businesses, homes, and there
were folks who called some of theTV stations up there that ended up really
in hindsight, I'm sure they feltawful, like, oh my god,

these people were on TV for areason. Look what happened to our area.
Thank god they were on television.And maybe people have better realization as
to why those decisions are made.I always like to say, well,
there's a lot of people will belike, you're just hyping this event up,
right. I'll never hype something up. I'd rather error on the side
of least regret. I would notwant to say, oh, we're not
going to have anything today, andall of a sudden, we have a

severe thunderstorm that created a tornado.And five lives. I could have saved
those had I said, okay,we've got tornado potential today. It's like
making a cake if you don't haveall the ingredients. If you don't have
the sugar, cake's not gonna tastegood. No, you still can make
the cake, but it's not thecake if you don't have the corn.
The bourbon's not going to rite.Yeah, to make it a whiskey sense

or a bourbon sense, but someof these ingredients you expect to be there,
and it just one little decimal orone little ingredient is just not quite
there, so the storms don't happen. But then we have these events like
this. You get some people whoare mad that we're on air, but
then there's others too. I gotmore thank you emails the last couple of

months because we had another one inApril eighth, I believe, no,
it was April second. It wasthe week before the eclipse. And I
got more thinkings between those two eventsthan I've ever gotten in my career.
So I hope it's more so amindset changing that oh, they're doing this
for a reason. Trust me,I don't want to beat I've worked that
morning from ten am to one am. I was exhausted. Would you would

you have been would you have gottenin trouble if in the middle of all
that, you're like, you knowwhat, I need a drink and you
break out a burbon, have acouple of fingers, get in trouble quite
a bit on that one. Butwe have people who walk in, Hey
do you need water? Do youneed this? Sure me that. But
because it's a marathon, right,it's three four hours and at sometimes you

don't know what time it is.You got to remind yourself. We have
all these cameras that we have acrossthe city, but you get tunnel vision
sometimes and you need someone in yourear, just like your producer saying,
hey, toss it to the litlecamera, toss it to the little camera,
something along those. Yeah, Iam basically a rollbot. My producer
does all the work for me.Now, what tarn Who was who was
our friend that we harassed from theWeather Channel? Who was that? Remember

that dude's name? When he wasin town and we tried to get him
to go on the air with usand he ended up being very nice,

a way in a sense, they'rea different show to watch, sure,
right, yeah, but well theresuddenly this dude from the Weather Channel parachutes
in and he's standing in Covington,and it's like, yeah, man,
I don't I don't want to watchthis guy who flew in from Atlanta or
New York for Washington or something likegive me, give me Brandon, give

me, gimme Steve, give methe folks who know this area. Yeah,
but that that was in early April. Yeah, why was he here?
Ah, that's a good question.But we were in. We were
in in that date. That Aprilsecond was the highest risk we've been put
in in Cincinnati in like eight years, so and we were right in the
center of it. So it's probablytheir best hotspot to get someone there because

How'd you get into doing a bourbonshow? Okay, that's a long
story. I got into whiskey backin twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen, got
into bourbon Bourbon twenty seventeen, twentyeighteen, and I was in Huntsville,
Alabama. This job, TV wisetakes you a lot of spots. You
gotta step up the ladder. Iwas in Duluth, Minnesota, then two

falls South Dakota, Huntsville, Alabama. Now here in Alabama, all the
real glamorous Yes, yes, yes, I'd like to call it a circle
across the Midwest and then to theSouth. But I was in Alabama.
I loved Bourbon. I was postingabout it on my Instagram page WX Spinner,
and I was like, yeah,I probably shouldn't be posting about whiskey
in the South on my professional account. So I started an Instagram page called

Whiskey Underscore, Weather, Whiskey andWeather just it's always whiskey weather. That's
what I like to say, right, So I just post pictures talk about
what I'm drinking. I don't knowif anybody even gives a crap, right
Yeah. People started following me thenthese reels, which was the new TikTok
but on Instagram. I'd do afunny one here there, and then more

people started following me. You getto meet some more people and just talk
to them and make friends. Andthen a buddy of mine that I knew
in Huntsville, huge Cubs fan,huge bourbon fans, you want to do
a podcast. So we started apodcast called Barrels and Barrels, a bourbon
and baseball podcast. We did thatand we're still We're kind of on hiatus
for some personal reasons between the twoof us, but it still exists.

But in that time being, whileit's been on hiatus, I kind of
witch to my own. I hada YouTube account myself, but didn't really
do much with it. I waslike, I'm gonna do more. I
have the TV personality. I cantalk in front of a camera. That's
a big thing for some people becausethat's a mental block. I love what

I'm drinking. I love whiskey.I like to inform people, and I
love the best part about whiskey inmy mind in bourbon is without the weather,
you don't have the whiskey, right, the aging barrel. Yeah,
sure, you don't get what theweather blends lost. So that's the most
interesting part of it. And learninghow the weather itself affects the whiskey,

in getting to dive into that,and then just getting to drink good whiskey.
And every once in a while adistillery will reach out to you or
bring you out. Yesterday I wasat Augusta distillery, got a behind the
scenes tour that no one has seenyet of their distillery out in Augusta.
They just reach out to you.Yeah, they reach out to you.
Maybe they'll send you some samples hereand there. Do you like her stuff?

There's bourbon fests Kentucky bourbon fests I'llbe at in September. Meet a
bunch of the people in the community. Some of my best friends are from
the whiskey community, right So,and then just talking about whiskey is my
other happy place, right sure.Whiskey and weather. Yeah so, yeah,
a little bit of both. Yeah, it can be for folks who

are because I got into it.I got into bourbon maybe early twenty tens,
just because I was around. Yeah, I was around a lot of
people who were drinking bourbon, andthen I met the woman who's now my
wife, and she was a bourbondrinker and had friends who are bourbon drinkers,
and so I kind of got intoit. It can be if you
decide, like I'm going to getinto this. Yeah, I'm going to

develop the palette. I'm going todevelop the taste for bourbon. It could
be a little intimidate h and thatthat could be rough. And I've had
people say that to me, Like, I don't know where to start,
so I'm not going to start.I drank whiskey on the rocks for about
two years in the start of mybourbon journey. Yeah, I drink it
neat ninety nine point nine percent ofthe time. Now we're a cocktail.
But you don't have to jump allin right away, right like start low.

You don't have to get the mostexpensive bottle. You get this and
could get a cheap bottle and somethingyou like, drink it the way you
like. I'm never going to tellyou how to drink your whiskey. I
would start in. I would getthree glasses. I would pour one in
a cocktail, pour one as neat, and then pour one with the rocks,
and see which one you like thebest out of that, and then
move from there. And then maybeyou start to develop the palette and you

start to pull things out. Right, because I wasn't pulling chocolate and vanilla
out of them. I was like, damn, this is just alcohol,
but it tastes good. That soundsa lot like me, right. But
the more I've drank them different kindsof whiskeys, finding out how the process
is, learning how to taste it. There's a there's a science, learning

how to smell it. He knowsyou're whiskey. That's the big thing.
Find out how to do that.You got to learn how to do that
without looking like a pretentious without thepinkies out well, looking like guys,
like a one like with the specialglass. Special you've got the special glass.
Look at that. That's big now. This but obviously Kentucky is the

bourbon capital of the world. ButCincinnati itself as has turned into Could I
the Cincinnati area a bit of ahotbed? Would that be? Yeah?
I mean We're on the northern sideof the Kentucky Bourbon trim. We've got
a lot of great local distilleries hereNew Riff. I was just telling you
about Augusta. But there's Boone County, even small craft distilleries. We've got

Wenzel which is out in Covington,which is not well known of. There's
brain Brew just east of town,and then in Ludlow there's second Site,
very very small distillery. But everyevery one of these has like a really
cool story or some origin story behindit. Which is another amazing part of
the bourbon life in the bourbon communityis there's a story about every different distillery.

Yeah. Uh raws squib about Lawrence. Yeah, yeah, that's so.
That's out what they call m gP, which the old Seagrums Factory.
They produced probably about five percent ofthe world's bourbon. Do you do
you have a place in town thatyou prefer to go to hunt for good
bourbon? Oh place, and Imean the party sources the destination, right,

I love the party. Yeah.I don't really have a spot.
Yeah, and I did get myfirst Pappy van Winkle last weekend really at
Kroger in Union, Kentucky that therewas this massive bourbon drop. Actually,
I had a couple of people comeup, are you gonna be on with
mo? Yeah? But any ofthat, No, I didn't. I

did bring some some stuff though,some good You mentioned Kentucky go. Yeah,
Well so people hear about bourbon drops, right, yes, and I
have I'm too damn busy to dothis, but I know people who will
say, like, I'm going togo to the Kroger and Dent or the
Kroger in Union or a certain andyou got to get there a Tuesday at
like nine to fifteen, and that'swhen you're gonna get the good stuff.

And if you show up by eleventhirty, the good stuff is going on.
How common is something like that?You don't have to mention You mentioned
the Kroger in Union again, youhave to mention specific places. But yeah,
sometimes they're random sometimes, you know. I think it's Saturdays that they
do bourbon drops at the Kroger's inCincinnati. It used to be a random
day of the week, but becausethe same people would go and camp out
it, Yeah, one, Ithink they split them up now. The

Kentucky one that I went to lastweekend, it was advertised for about two
weeks. I had knowledge of itabout a month and ahead of time because
you make relationships with the people thatare at the stores right and they're like,
oh, hey, we got somestuff coming. I sat and line
crazy. I got there at threeforty five in the morning, got to
wristband at four am, and thewristband pulling they did. The way they

did it was fantastic. I lovethe way that they go about it because
it's all random, rather than yougot here Thursday at five am and waited
till Saturday. You're the number onein line, you get the best bottle
because a lot of times some ofthose people they're just doing it to turn
around and get the best buck forit. Right. One of the Bourbons
where you see this happening is EgleRare Rare. When I first got into
Bourbon, I Ego rare you couldfind everywhere. My wife and I was

drinking and now my brother in law'sdad got me a bottle. And when
I told my friends I got abottle, you you would have I mean,
you would have thought I had likethe Reds World series trophy in my
basement. It was and I'm like, it's Eagle rare it's good. I'm
glad I got it. But whydoes something like that that was so common

become something that ends up being marketing? The other one I'm holding up.
I brought a bottle of blatant andright, that's probably the biggest what they
called tater bottle. You're tater becauseyou're chasing hype, right, right,
very good marketing. The bottle ofBeautiflottle is great. Yeah, the whiskey
is good. I don't think it'sthe best whiskey in the world, right,

I don't think it's the worst.I'm not going to pay more than
what the MSRP is, which issixty five to seventy five dollars. Some
people will pay one hundred and fiftydollars just because they want to. Movie
Buffalo Trace makes it so anything BuffaloTrace has got to be great because that's
who makes Pappy Vane winkel. Right. I believe that the episode of Neat
I think is what it was calledon Netflix, which really drove Buffalo Trace

through the roof the Pappy Vane Winkleboom. But there's a lot of other
good whiskeys out there that I want. I want stand in line for a
bottle the Eagle rear blatant. I'llgo stand in line for a bottle old
Route eight from Augusta. I'll gostand in line for an old Fitzgerald.
I'll go stand in line for someof the other stuff. It's all everybody's
preference too, not not the crapon Buffalo Trace. I love Buffalo Trace.

and not only showed up but he'sbrought some good stuff. I brought some
bourbon. U what are we aboutto try? So? This is Augusta
Distillery. It's out of Augusta,Kentucky. It's called Old Route eight.
It's a single barrel. It's aneight year old bourbon, made in Kentucky

and aged in Kentucky. One thingabout Augusta, I was just there yesterday,
so stay tuned for a behind thescenes look at that. But the
cool thing I love about them isthey're very transparent. They have an NDA.
They can't tell you where they're sourcingit from, but it's all Kentucky.
And they will not put out abottle of whiskey for distribution unless it's
at least eight years old. Really, really, they're only a four year

old company though. Or they startedin COVID, so twenty one. I
don't know the exact day when theystart. So somebody eight years ago started
making the bourbon and then they didn'tgo into business until four years later,
right, So no, So whathappens is they're sourcing this from a different
distillery somewhere in Kentucky aging it there. But they just built a new rick
house and in fact, last yeartwenty twenty three, the San Francisco Spirit

Awards ranked their thirteenth or their thirteenyear old bourbon. Yeah, best bourbon
in the world. Really, yeah, in the world, in the world,
Well bourbon, it can only bemade in the United States as part
of the ABC's which a lot ofpeople don't understand. A lot of people
also think it can only be madein Kentucky. A lot of people have
that misconceptions. And I love thestate of Kentucky, but a lot of

people have that misconception. This goodbourbon from all over the place. They've
got Ohio bourbon in here, fromMiddle West spirits, Kentucky bourbon. Sure,
that's where it's from, right,But Indiana MGP right over the river
and Lawrenceburg, they're pumping out.A lot of the brands you see on
the shelves might be coming from that, right Or Colorado distilleries are popping up,
Acxis distilleries, Washington State, there'sCalifornia bourbon. Why do you think

there was such this the surge ofpopularity ten eleven years ago that lasted it
really continues to this day. Yeah, it's hard to tell a lot of
it cyclical. There was a bigwhiskey boom in the early nineteen hundreds and
eighteen hundreds. Right, that's whywe have the Bottle in Bond Act now
eighteen ninety seven, right, whichis to this day still the best and
(28:25):
most like stringent alcohol law in effect. Bottle in bond if. I'm sure
you've heard of it, But there'sa lot of different things that have to
be happening in order for that tobe called the bottle in bond. So,
back in the late eighteen hundreds,there was a good amount of it,
and then we had probition, right, and I think prohibition really killed
a lot of distilleries. A lotof these ones you've seen pop up,
(28:45):
or distilleries that were here in sothe early nineteen hundreds that are now one
hundred years later popping back up becausethe history has been found, or stuff
along those lines. As far asthe boom itself, I can't really put
a finger on what really caused it, but uh, craft, right,
craft beer had an explosion. Craftwhiskey is now doing the exact same thing
(29:10):
about a decade later. Yeah.I got that Henry McKenna, and it
says bottled and bottle on the bottle. Yeah, yeah, and so that
was the first time I'd ever seenthat that phrase you bottom and then learn
about it. It's a all right. So you've got the Augusta Route,
Yes, Augusta Route eight very good? Uh. New Riff in Newport a
bottle of that. I've got theeight year here. There's never been a

bad product I've had from there.I love New Riff. I do get
a lot of spearmint out of NewRiffs. Some people don't, right,
And that's what the cool thing aboutit. You are going to get something
way different out of that glass infront of you than I am. Right,
that's the beauty of it. Right. Neither of us is wrong.
Right, We've all got our opinions, we all have our thoughts. You
may hate that, I may loveit, and vice versa. It doesn't

make us any difference exactly. Whatis your favorite bourbon cocktail? If you
have one, Oh easy coach whois in old fashion, right, I
do like the paper train, andthen there's also the paper plane. You
put bourbon or rye whiskey in acocktail, I'm going to drink it unless
there's pineapple in it. But that'sa whole another sting. Okay, But

so for folks who don't understand thedifference between the two, go ahead.
Yeah, so bourbon and rye whiskeyboth made in America. Rye whiskey made
in Canada as well. But thelaw for bourbon and I have a link
on my Facebook page that has justdropped about this as well. I like
to say the ABC's and also goesto g but a is America. Bourbon

can't be made anywhere else from alaw back into the nineteen sixties. B
barrel or in this sense it's container. Most distilleries you hear bourbon barrels right,
has to be a brand new charredoak barrel, first time it's ever
been used, and it has tobe in there for one second. So

some people think it has to betwo years to become bright. That whiskey
can literally go on the barrel andthen you can dump the barrel right out
and it's considered bourbon because it's beenin the barrel. Has anybody actually tried
that. I believe there's been oneor two distilleries. Some some just sell
the waged five minutes. It's notgonna taste Good's gonna put some hair on
(31:18):
your chest, probably burn your esophagus, but it's not gonna be any good.
But that's the B and then Cis corn. In order for it
to be bourbon, fifty one percentof the mash bill, which is what
makes the bourbon, has to becorn. And then you can have any
other type of grain behind that.Usually it's rye, sometimes it's wheat,
(31:40):
and then usually you're gonna have maltedbarley in there as well. Sometimes you
have four grains, sometimes you havethree grains, but at least fifty one
percent of it has to be corn. Then you get to D, E,
F and G. G just meansgenuine. I'm not gonna get into
the nitty gritty of the rest ofyou. You're interested in that. Again,

Now. The Bourbon rail right,Yeah, So there are a lot of
(32:00):
folks, certainly in this part ofthe country, they'll make that a weekend
trip, or they'll they'll maybe aday trip, and they'll they'll they'll try
to go to as many places aspossible throughout Louisville and well beyond. Yes,
if if somebody says, all right, I got a weekend, I'm
gonna go to two go to twodistilleries. Right, I'm gonna I'm gonna
take I'm gonna take a weekend anddo to you. What would you recommend?
(32:22):
Where would you start? Frankfurt isthe home of Buffalo Trace. I
just was talking about how I wouldn'tstand in line for a Buffalo Trace.
But the place itself is immaculate,Right, it's great. I have yet
to do a tour there, butI've been on the grounds three or four
times. They have their whiskey thereto be bought. I believe they open
at ten am, it might benine am, whatever it is, but
(32:45):
they've got great tours. There's alot of history there, and down the
street is Castle and Key. I'mnot a huge fan of the whiskey itself,
but the grounds is probably the mostbeautiful you're going to see. It's
an old castle which was E.H. Taylor, Colonel E. H.
Taylor's old distillery back in the earlynineteen hundreds, and then it kind
(33:06):
of went by the wayside. Castleand Key bought it, They renovated it,
they built it back up. Thegrounds are amazing. It's an hour
and fifteen hour and a half southof Cincinnati. Either're right within five to
ten minutes of each other. There'sgood food out there, but those would
be if you just had a day, That's what I would do. August.
I was just out yesterday, notto just keep pumping them up,
(33:27):
but sure, what I love aboutwhat they're doing. They still haven't distilled
their own whisky yet. You gotoday, and then you go in two
months. It's going to be waydifferent in two months because they're still building,
so you can see the evolution.Now, you being a baseball guy,
yes, have you done the LouisvilleBats across the street from angels Envy?
I have not. It's literally acrossthe street. I've not done the

Louisville Bats. I've not done theLouisville Slugger Museum either. I'll get into
the building because I went down WhiskeyRow back in July last year. But
I haven't done too much of Louisville. I've done more of the Lexington,
Cincinnati and even Bartstown. Bartstown theCapitol of Bourbon, right yeah, out
there with Heaven Hill and all those, But have not done as much in
Louisville as I'd hoped to. That'sstill on the calendar for the summer.

I did and I did. Ihad been to a bunch of Louisville Bats
games and then when I got intoBourbon else there's a micro brewery right outside
the ballpark and I'm there and Ilook over and I'm like, wait a
minute, that's Angel's Envy. Andliterally the next day was down there for
a wedding, went and did thetour. Yeah, and you can walk
back across the street. And thenthe guy who gave me the tour said,

well, then you got to goto the Evan Williams tour. And
Evan Williams product is not my favoriteeither, but they do a speak easy
experience. That was a lot ofcool and it was like a ten minute
walk. Yes, that was prettyneat downtown Louisville. That Whiskey Row basically
they've got a ton and that's agreat weekend. Yes, you can go
down there, stay downtown, walkthe Whiskey Row, and even a couple
of different distilleries that are not downtownthat are just outside of downtown Peerless,

rabbit Hole, Barrel Craft Spears justopen their own tasting room and barrel house.

that you can only get good bourbonif you pay, oh, an exceptionally
high amount of money. Some ofmy favorite bourbon's on the shelf for fifteen
anywhere, right, Yeah, JTS, Brown Bottle and Bond. Go buy

it. It's good, especially ifyou're trying to get into it. Right,
what'd you think? That's good stuff? Right here? That's good now?
Now, I like to me there'sa note of like nuts. Yep,
it's got a nutt ince to it. Yeah, get a lot of
honey out of into you. Yeah. Do you have a favorite bourbon establishment?
You can buy? You can getbourbon almost anywhere, but is there
a favorite place you'd like to goand sit down and have one or two
