Over Don't Worry twenty five after threePaul Danner Junior's here, not physically here
like he typically is on Tuesdays becausehe gets busy. Next week, as
the Bengals started training camp, Paul'swith US Athletic or The Athletic and the
Growler podcast, the most recent ofwhich involved our look back at the twenty
twenty one playoff Bengals playoff win overthe Las Vegas Raiders. Go get that
(00:23):
where you get your podcasts? Watchthe YouTube video, which is pretty good.
How are you enjoying your your lastweek off so to speak before camp
begins. Uh? Yeah, I'mgonna be enjoying it even more the next
couple of days. You know, thanks, thanks, thanks to you for
letting us kind of free up alittle bit of time. But yeah,
(00:43):
you know what, what would wedo without one more camp preview? Like
what one more look, one moreshot at the off season of storylines and
unknowns until we finally get to havesomething new to talk about starting next week?
Yeah, I mean I this offseasonhas felt and I guess because they
(01:03):
didn't make the playoffs in the previoustwo years they did, this offseason has
felt particularly long and I don't thinkit's been a bad off season. I
don't think it's been a great offseasonnecessarily, but uh, maybe just because
of the added weeks with them notmaking the postseason. Maybe it's because a
lot of us felt like the offseasonbegan that Thursday night in Baltimore when Joe
Burrow busted his wrist. It thestart of stuff happening next week could not
(01:30):
be more welcome. No, itcould be. You know what this is,
this is t Higgins's fault, right, of course it all has to
come down to. No, it'ssome of these storylines have just felt like
they've been going on forever. Yeah, and so I'm joking about that,
but it's like you've had some ofthese things between Higgins and the Hendrickson thing
(01:51):
popped up and was in and out. But like just some of these things
and because of the Burrow rehab andhouses risk gonna look, it's just these
they've been the same storylines that havejust drug on and on and on.
So yes, next week, mockturtle soup, Uh, first training camp
practice, how's everybody looking. Maybewe'll see everybody start talking to people that
(02:14):
we haven't talked to. All ofthat is more than welcome because it's time
for some new storylines right now.Obviously, the answer to this is always
Joe Burrow, especially when he's comingoff an injury beyond him, when guys
start to trickle into town and theybecome available, is there somebody that you
haven't talked to or heard from, you know, maybe even during OTAs and
(02:37):
voluntary workouts and all that that you'relooking forward to hearing from. Well,
just you watch Case. I meanI think you know, I you start
at the top with with that stuff, and he's in a really interesting spot.
He didn't really want to talk understandablyduring the mandatory mini camp, you
know, with all the kind ofstuff that was going on, coming off
(02:59):
to Justice Person contract and coming intoa big year where I think there's a
lot of potential for them to usehim differently. The supporting pieces around him
look very different. You still dohave the Jefferson contract to talking about it.
You know, he's been very opentalking about his desires in that world
for you know, dating back tolast year he was in Paris with Burrow,
(03:23):
Like, there's a lot to coverwith Jamar Okay, and he's always
an interesting guy to talk to who'sas unfiltered as it gets. So I'm
really interested in in in actually gettingsome time to talk to Jamar whenever he
is ready to, you know, start talking to us again. And so
that's probably where it starts. Andthen you get into some you know,
(03:45):
some probably less celebrated storylines with withon the defensive side of the ball in
particular, we're talking about, Imean, these people that we've talked to,
but I am just gonna be fascinatedwith the first few weeks, two
three weeks really of the cornerback room. You know, what exactly is happening
there and at what point they mighthave to make a decision on these are
(04:08):
the guys who are going with ormaybe it's time to start talking about veteran
band aids. So let's talk aboutDax Hill in that regard, because it
felt like when when you and Ifirst talked about Dax is going to move
to corner, when they did whatthey did in safety, I I guess
I sort of geared myself to thinkthat Dax is going to be a backup
(04:30):
corner. It has felt like duringthe course of the offseason that he has
put himself in a genuine position towin a starting gig am I misreading that.
No, I think you're right.I mean when we had Louen Arumo
on podcasts after the end of MiniCamp, I mean that was what he
(04:50):
was saying. I mean, hewas saying that he has made all of
the right moves and made all theprogress and laid all the foundation really that
they kind of wanted to see fromhim in the off season to go into
this with it with their eyes reallyopen. And if Zach Taylor said it
after the draft that yeah, hebelieves he can win a starting spot,
(05:11):
They're gonna give him that chance.And it's a chance for a guy who's
a former first round pick the seasonopportunity and the fact that he's shown enough
that maybe he could do it somethingthat we kind of thought would be a
little bit more of an uphill battlewhen you consider he's never really played outside
corner necessarily. I think the factthe positive reviews that you've heard to this
(05:31):
point suggest yeah, I mean,he can go out there and do it.
And here's the other thing. Imean, it's not like he's going
up against prime Derell Reeves. Okay, what do we know about DJ Turner
other than he was really good andlaid a nice foundation earlier in the season,
and he was really not so gooddown the stretch. We don't know
(05:53):
what DJ Turner is gonna be inyear two. They hope that he's gonna
take this big step, but youknow, that's where Dax Hill's primary competition
is right now, is to goand be out somebody who was a college
teammate of his who had an upand down rookie year. So it's it's
certainly there for the taking, andthey're just looking for answers because you know,
(06:15):
that's a big question mark at thatposition, especially considering what happened last
year, to not feel like youwere betting on anything other than really projection.
And that's why I reference, youknow, the veterans signing, and
it just sort of hangs out therewhere you get to the first two or
three weeks and both of these guysare making a lot of the same mistakes.
Dax might not really be the answerthere, and you're kind of wondering
(06:40):
what's next. Well, I thinkthat's the point where you would quickly want
to turn to some of the veterans, your your Xavian Howard's and others that
are out there and say, hey, maybe we just think about stop gap.
Yeah. And it's interesting because youand I talked about that with running
back. You know, the numberof established players who are out there at
that position. It applies to cornerbackas well. Like if you want to
(07:00):
let your imagination run wild, there'sa lot of guys at that position who
are out there. I think aguy who's interesting because he's kind of right
there in the middle of Jordan Battle. Right when we talked about the Bengals
failures a safety last year, wetalked daxx Hill. All right, he's
no longer at that position. VonBell's back. They went and got Geno
Stone, but Jordan Battle is stillin the mix. What is his most
(07:20):
likely role in this team. Ithink he's probably going to be Von Bell's
shadow in a lot of ways. It's like, look, you saw a
lot of potential and believe that JordanBattle can really be a guy. But
I think to grow into that leadershiprole, the idea is do everything that
(07:43):
Von Bell does. Be like VonBell. He kind of you know,
you just didn't really have that trueveteran leader in the room, guy that
shows a rookie the way last yearand Michael Thomas, like is a legendary
human and is a super successful guy, but he was on the practice squad.
It's a little different when you're whenyou're a leader that knows the league
is a guy that's playing and doingall the things out there on the field,
(08:07):
versus somebody who's who's not even onthe fifty three. And so it's
it's harder to really learn by examplethat way, and so Von Bell is
the perfect person for Jordan Battle tolearn from. Now, I just think
Vaughn is going to be the starterweek one, just because of his knowledge
of the system and the comfort thatleuen Arumo wants to be providing out there
(08:30):
for everybody and not be kind ofwondering if another guy out there is going
to take a jump. But Ido think it's with the idea that Battle
can quickly take that over and bethe guy at some point this year,
and you know, only take he'llbe the first safety off the bench theoretically,
or maybe he's amazing in camp anddoes beat out Von Bell, Like
(08:52):
I think they're not ruling that out, but I think certainly what you you
know of how they tried to createstability on defense to avoid all of those
explosive plays, You've got to belooking at, you know, at von
Bell kind of being the one that'sout there early on. So it would
take a big, a big campfrom battle, I think to beat him
another few minutes with Paul Danner Juniorcovering the Bengals for The Athletic, The
(09:15):
Athletic dot com is where you couldsubscribe to get his work. Do that
before camp begins, and also checkout the Growler podcast. Follow Paul on
x at Paul Danner Junior. UH. One of the key story lines to
training camp, and this is thecase every year is who's gonna win the
Moegger Award. Now we've we've handicappedthis right and we've we've determined that andre
Yoshabash has a chance to win itin consecutive years. Is Jermaine Burton eligible?
(09:41):
High profile guy, two major schools, third round pick, but the
hype for him is snowballing And youpointed this out in your piece about the
fans survey, and I just Ifeel like we have to have the conversation
about who's really eligible for this becausehe is a rookie, right, there
are a lo lot of wide receivers. And I do think there's a point
(10:03):
that we can get where the hypeis is so it is so widespread,
is so loud, is so unavoidablethat it puts him in a position to
win the award. What's your take? This award is not about the front
running possibly projected starters, Okay, this is about This is about the depth
(10:26):
and the nuance that you provide.Your name is on this award. I
understand why I'm asking because you youare willing to go deep, all right,
and and and and listen to thecallers that want to talk about the
guy who really theoretically shouldn't have muchof a chance by no stretch of the
imagination, is that Jermaine Burden.Yeah, but you guys, But like
(10:48):
I take my cue when I'm onthe air, and I looked at what
you guys are tweeting about, LikeI already know, like rappine is gonna
sound like eight. Jermaine Burton tweetstoday like that's we're gonna go over under.
You're not gonna be that far behind. You're gonna be a little bit
more measured. I just you know, there's there's something about the like at
face value. I get it.It's got to be low round draft pick,
(11:11):
obscure school, college, free agent, that sort of thing, right,
It's but I don't know, man. I do think there's a world
where the hype gets to a pointthat you have to at least give him
cursory consideration. Wouldn't he have toexceed the hype though? Isn't that kind
of the point, Like whatever theconversation of expectations is for a player,
(11:33):
this is about exceeding them and creatinga next level of hope, Okay,
And so I think that's why that'swhy I would lean to a repeat for
yoshibash all right, because I thinkyou could see a next level of hope
for him. Maybe he could bethe next Ty Higgins, that could be
him. Like that's what you'll starthearing now in that conversation. Whereas Burton,
(11:56):
like the hype is already of expectationsis already high. Like I just
I think that all all returns aregood, Like he has certainly looked the
part, and they have a lotof hope for him, and they have
the idea of what his role couldlook like. A third round rookie is
a third round rookie and and Ijust feel like everybody is going a little
(12:18):
overboard. So to think that we'regonna give this award to somebody for somehow
going over top of those already toohigh expectations, I mean, it would
have to be a pretty spectacular camp. He'd need to be running side by
side with Jamar Sayce at some point. Okay, all right, well we
had to establish the ground rules now, so this this wasn't the sort of
thing that we could just you know, tap into in two weeks, sorry,
(12:39):
one more before I let it go. Yeah. Now, I'm just
say it's a serious award. Ijust want to make sure that that people
understand how how important this isn't justsomething that we talk about minute kind of
radio show. Oh yeah, thisis huge. Yeah. Uh give me
on each side of the ball acandidate to be at least a mildly surprising
(13:01):
cut. I would say, youknow, on on offense, is is
anybody surprised that Jackson Carmon got cut? No? Is that surprising? I
mean, he's in the last yearof his rookie deals, that money has
(13:24):
gone up a little bit. Ithink I don't think it would be surprising.
Yeah, not not surprising there. So, but that's that's probably one
that would be a name that peopleknow that I that has certainly, you
know, got to do something atsome point. I don't I don't know
(13:45):
what people are necessarily surprised by thereon On defense, I wonder how the
defensive line room is going to shakeout, you know, at some point
or somebody's gotta probably go there whenwe're talking at the back of that room
as battles with if Joseph Side, there's a lot of hope for him,
(14:07):
Miles Murphy. These guys are shouldbe things, but they really like cam
Sample where that Carter is a pickthat has disappointed, but he was a
third round pick from just two yearsago. You don't normally see those guys
jettisoned are given up on, buthe's out here fighting for his job and
there's really just not a lot ofconversation about him. So if that maybe
(14:28):
that would be a surprise. He'sbecause he was a recent high pick that
they would be be bailing that quicklyon him. That's probably I mean,
those are probably a few of themore names in terms of recent picks that
are fighting more for their lives thanyou would have expected at this point in
their career. The name that stoodout to me was Osai just because of
(14:50):
you know, it's year four andwe keep talking about that one preseason game
three years ago, and there justhaven't been enough moments. And he's had
injuries, but there just haven't beenenough moments. And I wonder with you
know, just the quantity of playersthey have there that are either you know,
higher draft picks, higher round draftpicks, players with a pedigree.
(15:11):
I just I wonder if if hefits the bill, maybe more than anybody
else. All Right, you've gotto get to it because it's your last
week of freedom. I am offnext week, and so I know with
practice schedules are Tuesday visits, theyget a little bit weird. But I
look forward to talking with you insome way, shape or form once training
camp gets underway. Thank you asalways. Yeah, we will always make
(15:35):
it happen. I will always finda way for you, and we'll have
many updates. You will be addedon X anytime we have any movement in
the Moeger Award voting and discussion. Is it just wide receivers. I think
you could probably throw a tight endin there, but I think it's got
to be mostly focused on somebody who'scatching passes, probably point where they're doing
(16:00):
it in shorts and no helpt.Awesome man, thanks so much, No
