(00:03):
What what is that? You don'tlike bb king? I do like bb
King. It just caught me offguard. I was just say I won't
tell her to any BBK slander. No, I enjoy bb king. I
that wasn't the I know it's allgood. I didn't know if that was
Wes specific. Maybe Wes is abig bb king guy joining us now live

(00:24):
from the road, the head coachof the Cincinnati Bearcats, Wes Miller,
Wes, are you a Are youa big bb king guy? Yeah?
I'm a basketball guy. We're gonnaleave it at that today. You're not
you don't like the blues. It'snot a North Carolina music. I like
music all music, just spot especiallygood relaxing, up beat music. That's
good with me. There you go, all right, coach on the road.

(00:47):
How is how's the new recruiting calendarworking out for you? Well,
you know, it's uh, it'sone of those things that it did.
The NCAA has made so many changes. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense,
but you kind of take what thecalendar is and you make the most of
it. But we were, youknow, on the road last weekend with

(01:08):
you know, five days off andback on the road, and they let
us in the gym at six o'clocktonight through sun through Sunday. So we're
back on the road again, andI'm looking forward to getting through this weekend
and getting back on the floor ofour guys next week. That's the big
thing is is a summer workouts andand progressing the team towards the season.
We'll get to that. H Andjust a little bit first. The news

(01:30):
of the day today, the TVTguys are back in town. Uh that
this has become kind of an annualtradition at Cincinnati to have that group back.
How good to see those guys again, and and this year hosting the
game at the Third Arena, it'sit's it's great to have him in town.
I you know, I can't tellyou that the TVT has become a

(01:52):
great event for for us because it'sjust a natural way to get those guys
back in town, back around campus, back around our players. Uh,
just like good natural interaction. Butit's been great for the last three years
and this this year is no different. What's what's different about this year is

(02:14):
that we have it in fifth thirdand you know, I hope all the
all the all the Bearcat fans outthere, come out and support those guys.
I know they played a night.If it wasn't a recruiting weekend,
I'd be there. I hate Ican't be there. Uh, but they
they played a night, and ifthey win a night, they play Sunday.
And if they went on Sunday, they played Tuesday. So I plan
on having my butt in the seatson Tuesday supporting them. But the really

(02:37):
good to have all those guys backin town. Speaking of the fan base,
just recently released the team is goingto be traveling back downtown to the
Heritage Bank Center to take on Daytonh A a important game in the non
conference schedule. Uh. What didyou learn from this game a year ago?
And and and what would you liketo see coming into the game.

(03:00):
It's gonna once again be one ofthe pivotal non conference games for you.
Yeah, well, certainly we weren't. We weren't pleased with the outcome a
year ago. It didn't suck,we played well. Uh missed a big
opportunity. And in non conference play. Uh, it's a big deal.
It's a it's a local game,it's in our community. Uh. I

(03:22):
can't stress this enough. We gotto do our job to prepare as a
team and as a program, andI think our guys will be excited for
the opportunity to play against the qualitylocal opponent. Uh well, but we
we need we need help in thatthat arena, you know, we we
can't. We got to make sureit's it's not overwhelmed with Dayton fans.
Uh. We we got and theycame out and drove last year. We

(03:45):
appreciate all the Bearcat fans that cameout, but we got we got to
make sure that we're loud and proud, especially in downtown Cincinnati. It's an
important game because it'll have ncub Atournament implications because Stayton will be good again,
and then it's just an important gameand in our community. So I
really really hope please go out andbuy tickets, Please come out and support,
and we're gonna need some help thatnight. I think it's end of

(04:09):
December before we go to Christmas Break, so a big game. Need the
fans to come out for that one. I think the thing that surprises people
when when learning about Dayton basketball ishow big and passionate that fan base is.
And if you're gonna you know thatthat's the call to action here.
If you're going to match that, the Cincinnati fan base has to come just
as strong and prepare and treat itlike a game that's that's being played at

(04:32):
Fifth Third Arena, because you know, the Dayton fans are coming down,
they're gonna take advantage. They're goingto spend the night in the hotel downtown.
They're gonna make a night of itand make a weekend of it.
And you know, that's kind ofthe challenge for Cincinnati fans is you have
to match that energy that you knowthe Dayton fans are gonna bring. Yeah,
And you know, I think, listen, we have an incredible fan

(04:53):
base. Absolutely, you're here tohear me say it all the time,
like that's what I feel like.I'm one of the luckiest coaches in America
to coach somewherehere people care like this. Uh, and I wish the game
was in fifth Earth. If there'sa lot of important reasons that it's it's
it's a neutral game that are importantto the program, important to our scheduling.

(05:14):
But you know, obviously that's that'sa massive game Dayton playing against the
Big twelve school and their fans recognizethat it's it's a massive game for us
too, and we just got tokind of get the word out to everybody
that that we need people in theseats because there were more Dayton fans there
last year. Now, shoot, that probably was good because we didn't deserve
to have any fans the way weplayed. But well, we'll play better
basketball this year and hopefully we'll havesome support there. Uh, let's take

(05:39):
a look at this summer. You'vegot a lot you know, when we've
had this conversation in the summer. The past couple of years, there's been
a lot of unknown about the roster, a lot of turnover, a lot
of a lot of new faces andnew places and new roles. There's not
as much of that this year. How much different is this offseason because you
were able to retain and and andcontinue forward with a lot of the guys

(06:02):
that were that were so important lastyear. I guess the exact opposite is
the year before where you lost youknow what, six of your top seven
scores. This year you're bringing almosteverybody back. It's different. It's the
same in the sense that that wegot to have a great offseason and a
great summer you know, like theday to day approach. What we got

(06:25):
to accomplish every day, that's thesame, that's not going to change.
It's different in the sense from afrom a planning perspective. As a coach,
you just have so much more awarenessof what you have and what these
guys can do and the things thatyou have to attack and work on.
You know, so much of lastsummer was just trying to figure them out

(06:46):
right and figure out who can dowhat and who fits where. Certainly we're
still doing some of that in thesummertime, but when you return a lot
of those impact guys that we dothat you can get more specific and you
have a better idea what you've gotto spend time on. Dan Skillings made
an incredible jump last year from hisfreshman to his sophomore season. Asking him

(07:09):
to make that level of a jumpagain is asking a lot, But it's
not out of the realm of possibilitythat Dan takes another significant step forward because
of how new he still is tothe game. What does he look like
for you this summer? What hashis mindset been like? You know,
I think not just and that allthe returning guys I've been plased right.

(07:30):
They they've they've come in with aconsistent work ethic. Today we're not done
yet, still a couple of weeksleft a summer practice, but they've come
in with a consistent work ethic. They've all improved from their approach and their
mindset a summer a summer ago.I think what I'd say though to all

(07:50):
of them directly and I have, and what I'd say that anybody out there
listening is it's been respectable. Istill want it to be better. Know,
I still think it can be evengreater. And then that's not knocking
anything that we've done so far thissummer, but I think there's there's still
more there for for all of them, and we'll continue to push for that.

(08:11):
Where is CJ. Frederick at inhis his return. I know it
was a frustrating season for him,but he's an important piece to the puzzle
this year. How has he beenhealth wise and how has he looked on
the floor. He's he worked reallyhard h in April and may you know,
and a lot of guys are arekind of decompressing from the season.

(08:35):
I thought he kind of kicked itup the gear in April and may to
try to get healthy and get backin shape. And he's he's been just
that, you know, to today. This summer, he's participated in everything,
have not been limited in any way. And you know, last year,
you know, we were a littlemore cautious with him, even in
the summer, just because some ofthe history, you know, we we've

(08:58):
we've made a point not to dothat. This summer that's been important to
CJ. And you know, Todateagain, he's been healthy and had a
nice summer. Last year, youtook one of the biggest risks in college
basketball. Some of it was circumstantial, but I don't think people realize how
gutsy it was and maybe risky itwas for you to go into the season
with the first season in the Bigtwelve with two point guards that had never

(09:20):
dribbled a basketball in a Division onegame, much less than the best conference
in America. Both of those guysperformed well in that first season, and
now what we were wondering about aseason ago as a potential unknown, you
go into season two with these twoguys as a strength. Talk about point

(09:41):
guard and Gisel James and Dade Thomas, who's recovering from the foot injury.
Too. Well, he's back,Chad. Yeah, you know, he
was cleared. We limited him alittle bit the first two or three weeks
in June. And I say alittle bit, I mean we were trying
to protect him from himself, youknow, because Dada. I'd say,

(10:01):
Daday's work ethic has been probably asconsistent as anybody in our program over the
last year and a half. It'severy single day, it's multiple times a
day. It's it's extremely admirable. And one thing we wanted to do bringing
him back was just make sure hewasn't on his feet too much, because
he's the type of guy if youdon't say anything, he'll be out there
for three or four hours a day. So we limit him a little bit,

(10:24):
not because we had to just tokind of protect day day from day
day. And then you know,Giseles obviously gets got such more awareness of
what this is, you know, last year making that jump from high school
to this level of college basketball. It was obvious, you know, from
the summer through the fall, andthen you saw him kind of hit a

(10:46):
stride there at the end of theyear. So he's not a they're not
rookies anymore. And you know, like I say, we'll say about all
of them. They've done a nicejob so far this summer. I still
think there's there's more there, andwe're going to demand that you added three
guys in the transfer portal Connor Hickman, Arrington Page, and Dylan Mitchell.

(11:07):
They are not It's not like aseason ago where there was so much being
placed on these shoulders of the guysthat were coming in because of what you
lost. Now is it a littlebit different this year allowing those guys to
kind of get a little bit morecomfortable at their own pace than trying to
speed up the process like you hadto do a year ago. It's it's

(11:30):
I think it's helpful for incoming guys. Like anytime there's there's a transition,
right as a player, you know, like it's going to take some time
to get up up to speed withterminology and the principles offensively and defensively because
they're going to be different place toplace. So like every year guys that
are making the transition, even likeguys that like it played at the level

(11:54):
that that these guys have played at, like Dylan Mitchell obviously is played at
Texas and two tournament teams it's stilla transition, not because the level is
a transition, because it's a newsystem, right, UH and new demands.
What's a little different this summer isthat we're not doing that with an
entire roster, right, We're notworking on that transition that they can learn

(12:16):
from people on the floor, right. So when you have as many returning
guys as we do, they helpteach the new guys, and sometimes the
new guys can learn just by watchingthe guy in front of them in a
drill or in something that we're doingon the floor, So that I think
that speeds up the learning curve, not just for the transfers, but for
the group as a whole. Youyou've added a couple of new assistants and
Tim Buckley and Jalen Stowe, You'vehad a Bill comer to to your support

(12:41):
staff. What has that transition beenlike with UH with two guys that are
that are completely new into your wayof doing things, and then and then
bringing Jalen Stowe back UH to tobe the player development guy and that that
fifth assistant. Yeah, well, first off, it was great. You
know that you got guys on yourcoaching staff moving on to be head coaches.

(13:01):
You know, that's something that I'mreally proud of. And like Josh
Leffler uh getting the Division one headcoaching job at Loyle and Baltimore the Patriot
League. He's going to be asuperstar, uh, And so I'm super
proud of that. And then JakeDelon, Uh, you know, it's
going to take over Cuff Cat hishis his high school and we all know,

(13:24):
one of the great programs in thearea. So you lose a couple
of good staff members, but youlose them, uh because they go on
to be head coaches. But thenI think we've really gained a lot with
the guys that we've hired. Youknow, Tim Buckley just he's experienced a
ton, He's seen a ton,so he has that wisdom and in in

(13:48):
different ways than than I do.Even with the experience that I have as
a head coach, he's been aroundit a long time. But he still
has energy, you know, hestill has energy to be on the floor
working with the guys. And I'mreally excited about his hire. I think
he brings something to this staff needs. And then you know you mentioned Bill
Komar, who's just the consonment professionaleverywhere he's worked. You hear the same

(14:13):
things, and he's he's making usa just just much more high level operation
day to day. So I thinkwe've done a nice job with those two
guys. And then Jalen Stowe, who was with me for three years before
I hired him back to be ourdirector of player development. He's young,
he has energy and passion for it, and that's a really big part of
our program, is what we doto develop our players on a day to

(14:35):
day basis, and he'll ever seethat. So yeah, I'm excited about
the new staff, and again,I feel good about the Rash has put
together. But what we got todo now is go do the work,
you know, And I know that'snot the fun thing to talk about,
but that's the real thing is wejust got to bury ourselves in the work
every day and getting better because wedo have some opportunities. But what we

(14:58):
do with that opportu tunities what's goingto matter from here on now. The
thing I will say about Stowe ishe's the only guy I've ever seen that
can that can talk during like apickup game or whatever at the same level
as a Troy Cocaine. That's it'sa very high level of talking. Well,
yeah, well he's he's. Uh, it's interesting because you know,

(15:20):
he was a grad assistant at onepoint four US and he's been now being
in the Division one assistant coach somewhereelse. So if the professionalism is at
such a different level, it's likeso fun to watch guys grow, and
he's he's really grown from a youknow, a guy that you know played
was on the same level as theplayers as a GA in a lot of
ways, Like the example you mentionedto somebody that you know you view now

(15:43):
as a coach and that that's beenthat's been fun. The time away was
good for him. Well, youenjoy your your time out on the road,
I know, a brisk forty eighthour trip on the road and then
and then back to campus and thenback on the road. Uh. But
the end of July is almost here, co which it's almost time to start
getting serious about the start of practicein October. And I know that always

(16:04):
keeps you very excited. And there'snothing that gets me more excited than the
start of practice in the fall. Can't wait. But we got a lot
of work left to do this summer, so we're excited about that. Too.
Thanks for having me as always, all right, appreciated coach. Have
to safe travels and good luck outthere, all right, thank you so
much. There you go, CincinnatiBearcats head coach Wes Miller joining us here

(16:25):
