bring in one of my very favoritepeople on the University of Cincinnati Beat and
(01:10):
he does a terrific job covering allthings Bearcats basketball and football and football training
camp Alex Frank is going to beopening on July thirty. First, I
got that right correct. I'll tellyou I can't wait for that and yes,
I'm looking forward to July thirty firstand July twenty fourth for Bengals training
(01:32):
camp and drags. I just wantto tell everybody out there listening that your
podcasts are fantastic. War Too kindBred, They are fantastic, great listens,
and your episode with Dan Horror talkingBearcats was very very good about it
two weeks ago, you know, speak of the Devil. I love Dan
Horde and went golfing with him lastweek. Thanks Dan, by the way
(01:55):
for allowing me to whack the ballaround the course a little bit. We
were talking about Dante Corleone and Ithink the Bengals Bearcats kind of dodged a
bullet here. It was scary whenthe first story came out of a blood
clot in his lung. He cameto the Bearcats athletic director for sports Medicine,
(02:17):
Aaron Himmler, with the reports ofchest pain. But he's recovered pretty
quickly. The hope is, Iguess Alex Frank, that he can recover
in time and you know, maybehe misses one or two games at the
start of the season. Maybe theyhave him back for the beginning of the
year. Do you have the lateston Dante Corleone. Yeah, And it's
(02:38):
interesting in Trags that you bring thatup because if Scott Saderfield talked about this
at Big Twelve media Days last weekout in Las Vegas, that Dante has
been working out with the team, which you and Dan talked about. So
hopefully we don't know when he's goingto be able to practice, but the
fact that he's been working out withthe team, and that Sadderfield says if
(02:59):
he hasn't or if he was notgoing to be dealing with this issue right
now, he would have been inmedia days, which is obviously a very
encouraging sign. We don't know howmany games, if any, he will
miss, but the hope is becausehe has been working out that he is
going to play and going to playa majority of the games this season,
which would obviously be very beneficial tothe Cincinnati Bearcats given to the Big Twelve.
(03:23):
And I think a lot of peoplemay not realize how many teams in
the conference Mike are very good atrunning the football. You have to have
a big body in the middle ofyour defensive line to stop the running game.
I mean, particularly the Bearcats don'tface him this season. Ali Gordon
down in Oklahoma State Big twelve preseasonOffensive player of the Year, and the
(03:46):
Bearcats struggled against him and the Cowboyslast year. But when you face teams
that are going to run the footballin the Big twelve, you have to
have a plan to stop the runninggame. And Dante Corleone is a big
and it's the focal part of that, you know. And I think what
really Scott Sanderfield wants to see fromthe Bearcats is for them to get off
(04:08):
to a hot start. They werein the midst of doing that, and
then they of course blew that gameat home to Miami of Ohio last year,
and it really, you know,it talked about this with Tony Pike
last week. It flipped. Itfelt like, not only flipped the entire
twenty twenty three season his first, but like the program really took a step
(04:29):
back, and I think it shockedthe program, and I think what the
Bearcats need to do this year. They played Towson in the season opener on
August thirty first, then they playedPitt at Nippert on September seventh. Of
course, they won at Pitt lastyear, and then they were two to
zero and then lost that game.To Miami this year. The Miami game
is at Jaeger Stadium, and thenthey have the Houston Cougars again, that's
(04:54):
at Nippert So three of their firstfour games are at home, and certainly
some hay could be made if theBearcats get off to a hot start.
Absolutely, the schedule is very favorable. I remember when it came out.
I remember thinking, Okay, theydon't face Utah, who was picked to
win the Big Twelve in the preseasonmedia pool. They don't face other teams
(05:18):
at the top of the conference, they don't face Arizona, and they,
as you said, their schedule atthe front of it is very favorable.
Yeah, they go to Miami, but I would have to think, given
the history of the Bearcats program, and given how much success and domination they
had over Miami prior to last season, that they go to that game with
(05:40):
something to prove and a revenge mindset, but faith in talisand you think that's
going to be a win pit athome. Last year they went in,
the Bearcats went into Pittsburgh, theywin, They run the ball straight down
their throats. I remember thinking thisteam might be better than I expected them
to be. And year one ofthe Big Twelve. But when they lost
to Miami last season, remember itit was a Saturday night, obviously,
(06:01):
it was Week three, and youcould feel something. Even from Afar,
you could feel that, Oh,they just lost to Miami. They're in
the Big twelve. They're playing Oklahomanext week. It's on Big New Kickoff.
They were supposed to be three andoh they were receiving votes in the
Tap twenty five at the time afterwinning a pit and then for as competitive
as they were against Oklahoma and BYUand even against teams like Baylor and then
(06:27):
Central Florida, it never felt thesame. It felt like there's all I
mean, sometimes in seasons there's alwaysone game that doesn't go your way and
it just casts that dark cloud.Oh my gosh, what are we doing?
And it never it never feels thesame. You start pressing, you
don't play like you know how toplay and or want to play. And
(06:50):
I mean, look, this seasonthey have to be And I remember reading
comments on Twitter and talking to peoplein the offseason, Mike, the feeling
is they should be four and Othe Bearcats because the great thing is they
don't play a game outside of thestate of Ohio. Until week five when
(07:11):
they go to Texas Tech. Ifyou can be four and oh, you
have a chance to really you havea chance to really set yourself up to
get to a bowl game. Letme ask you, Okay, I think
we can safely assume, at leastat the start of training camp that Brendan
Sorosby, the transfer out of Indiana, is going to be your starting quarterback.
(07:33):
Correct. Can we go on thatassumption or do you want to throw
Brady Lichtenberg in there and say he'sgot a shot. I would say that
Brendan Soresby is the leader in theclubhouse right now, but I want to
rule it out. And Canderfield's talkedabout this before, that they use multiple
quarterbacks throughout the season. I wouldsay Soorsby, though, is going to
get the majority of the net.You and I have talked about this.
(07:54):
He has the most experienced, hehas some upside. What's interesting to me,
though, is whoever is the startingquarterback stars by Lichtenberg. They're gonna
have a huge advantage of playing behindan offensive line that returns all five starters
from last season that I cannot tellyou how beneficial that is to any quarterback.
(08:16):
You also have Corey Kiner in thebackfield to hand the ball off too,
And I would think the Bearcats,I believe they are going to be
a run first team. That's whatcenterfield are built off of. You saw
how well they ran the ball atLouisville in his four seasons and even last
year. What gets lost in theshuffle is Corey Kiner averaged five and a
half yards of carry and had overone thousand yards. Did they not have
(08:37):
two one thousand yard rushers last year? I don't think they did. I
don't believe they did. Cory Kinerhad a thousand yards and I can't remember
how many yards the next closest runningback had, But Corey Kiner had a
thousand yards rushing last season. Thatmight get lost because the end of the
season it was just the Bearcats weregetting blown out in almost every game.
(09:00):
But I think going into this season, the fact that you have a quarterback
in Sorsby that has played in theBig Ten, which I consider a plus.
You have an offensive line that returnsall five starters and has a year
of experience under their belt, AndI just think the second season always should
be better than the first. Whenyou're in a situation like the Bearcats are
in new conference, new head coach. I know there's a lot of people
(09:24):
that I talk to that don't reallyknow a lot about Scott's centerfield. They
think it may be the wrong higher. But I'm like, let's see how
this season plays out. Favorable schedule. As you just mentioned, Corey Kinner
returning Brandon Soursby transfer from Indiana whohas played in some Big Ten games and
has performed well. You have someintriguing options at quarterback, you have some
(09:46):
intriguing offensive pieces. Let's see howthis season plays out with a Scott centerfield
offense that I have seen be reallygood and really prolific in terms of yards
and points. Give me sixty secondson a player that has always been of
interest to the Cincinnati sports fan. He's making the move from quarterback to wide
receiver. The exposition Evan Prater outof Wyoming. What are your thoughts on
(10:13):
him as a potential starting wide receiverin this Scott saderfield offense. I'm excited
because the one thing I've always thoughtabout Evan Brader and I really liked about
him is his athleticism and wide receiver. You need to be an athletic player.
But you have a guy with speedand athleticism at the ex position,
you have options, You have theability to make your offerends more dynamics.
(10:37):
Here's the thing. The Bearcats havelost a lot of receivers over the past
two seasons, whether it be tothe transfer portal or the NFL Draft.
But you get Xavier Henderson, whohad a really good first season as a
Bearcat last year averaged over thirteen yardsto catch. And now you get Evan
Brader, who did show some flasheslast season a wide receiver. The one
(10:58):
thing I've always thought about him,Mike, is he was a high commit
coming out of out of Wyoming Highschool. He was highly touted. I
was so excited for him to finallyget a chance to play quarterbacks. Ultimately,
we know it didn't really work out, and I wish it would have
for him. I wish it wouldhave for Bearcats fans because I saw the
potential. But just like you seewith a pitcher converting to an outfielder like
(11:24):
rick Yankeel for an example, oran outfielder converting to a pitcher, you
can see that maybe there is potentialthere with Evan Prader, I'm excited to
see what he can do in asatderfield offense. We've seen players move from
quarterback to wide receiver. I'll giveyou an NFL example. You probably remember
this name, Antoine Randall. Lplayed quarterback in college, then went on
to the NFL and had a reallygood career with the Steelers. So I
(11:48):
know I'm loll han in sixty secondsright now, but I'm excited to watch
Evan praterer the position, Alex.Where can people really quick follow your stuff?
They can go on TWSN don Nett, I'm a writer for the Rightway
Sports memory of Malik right, shoutout to him, and they can also
go to Sincy Jungle and a Seaof Blue part of sp Nation and of
course the front office, news andchatterbox forts Mike, it is always a
(12:11):
pleasure talking to you, and Iknow you're getting ready for your busiest time
of season. But for those ofyou out there that are looking for Bengals
content, CLNS media is your placeto go. I appreciate it, Alex.
We got to run here. Brennemanon baseball is next. You're listening
