Speaker 1 (00:00):
Almost almost as cool as having Chad Brendela Bearcat journal
dot Com joins us. Every Thursday, you see is winding
down the higher ground portion of a training camp, and
the season opener is getting closer two weeks from Saturday
when the Bearcats will host howsand Chad is on x
at Chad Brendle, you told me, and I didn't get
(00:21):
a chance to respond when you texted. We texted to
make sure you know you knew you were on today,
that you would you would thaw out by four twenty?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Do I dare do? I dare ask? What does that mean?
Are you okay?
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I got the ice bath treatment today?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
How was it cold?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
So they had it they had a choice. Well, there
was one tub that didn't have any ice in it,
like the ice that melted in the tub. And then
there was another tub that looked like it just had
like four fresh bags of ice in it, like the
entire top of the water, the entire surface level was
all ice. And you can see Gavin Gerhard tell them
(01:05):
throw them in that one, throw them in that one.
Have you ever seen the carry Combs video? I have, yes, Yeah,
that was outstanding, I asked him, because they were they were.
They looked like a pack of hyenas, like circling the
media scrumb and I was like, are you still fast?
(01:25):
And he was like, they're not going to throw me in.
I'll go run over there, jumping myself and then true
carry Combs fashion sprinted to the Ice cub jumped in
and then got up and and you know, gave his
uh uh Donald Trump, I got shot in the ear.
Uh like you know, victorious celebration.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Wow, incredible? Well, uh, how how do you feel now?
Are you okay?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
You back? You thought out? You good?
Speaker 3 (01:51):
I'm refreshed. I feel like I could, you know, like
go go run a mile or something. And that's what
those Ice fans are supposed to do, right, Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Absolutely, I mean I I've never done in my site.
Yeah all right.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
So they're winding down the higher ground portion of the
done of camp, right, So they're done with that and
then everything pivots back to Knippert In a week from now,
I guess they'll be in game prep mode. You have
been at all these practices? What have you learned about
this team?
Speaker 3 (02:19):
There's so much more depth than there was a season ago.
You know, a year ago we kind of knew who
the starters were. We didn't know anything about kind of
what they had behind that, and then we found out
is the season war on. We didn't really know because
there really wasn't any depth, functional depth at least they
(02:39):
you know, I think the talent acquisition department, which used
to be called the recruiting department. I think they did
a really good job focusing on some areas that they
knew that they could improve. The team looks much faster,
looks much more Big twelve ready than they were season ago.
But AULTIMATELYMO I still have concerns about their ability to
(03:04):
stop the run, and that has been exacerbated by you know,
a couple of injuries along the defensive line that they're
going to be tested because you know, this is not
basketball on turf Big twelve from three four years ago.
There's a lot of great running teams in this league.
(03:24):
And boy, they need to get Dante Corleone. You know,
if he's if he's he can go. You know, I
think they can, they can, you know, hold their own,
but with him still, you know in question, no Jalen Hunt,
no Micah Coleman. That's like three of your top four
or five defensive linemen expected to go into the season
(03:47):
that part of the defense. Walt Stewart's got some magic
to work run defense.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Obviously, you start with the guys up front, and there
are issues. There are the concerns about the run defense
limited two concerns about the defensive line or do they
extend elsewhere.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
I think that you know, linebacker and safety, they did
a really good job elevating not only the depth but
the starter level talent. I mean, you know, let's let's
just be honest. And this is not to disparage either,
you know, any of these guys, but that safety room
was not good last year. That linebacker room did not
(04:29):
have any you know, serviceable functional depth, and a guy
like Jack Dingle, who's a really good linebacker, had to
play through numerous, numerous, numerous injuries because they couldn't afford
to take him off the field. And you know, you
went out and you had a chance. The other day,
(04:50):
I told you to keep an eye on Black eleven.
Jake Goldey is a physical specimen. He should really help
in that linebacker room. Ared Bartlett should really help in
that linebacker room. And then I love the safety group.
It's it rivals. What we saw what was that twenty
(05:11):
nineteen when they completely remade the receiver room and went
from a receiver room that was dreadful to Alec Pearce
and Tyler Scott and Trey Tucker and Jordan Young, and
all of a sudden you looked and went, well, this
room doesn't look anything like that. You know what they
had to sift through last year. So I think they're
(05:33):
serviceable help at the second level. But boy, you know,
one of my least favorite things in football, MO is
watching a team where the safeties lead the team in tackles.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Correct yes, likewise, and we we have seen that a
bunch relative to what you thought coming in. Like you mentioned,
I was there the other day and then I watched
I watched Brendan Soresby, and I I walked away from
from it thinking that that guy looks the part.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
He just looks now looks the part.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Doesn't mean he's going to be the Big twelve player
of the year or set a whole bunch of passing
records that you see, but he just he looks like
a big twelve quarterback. You see last year, in all
due respect to Emery Jones, didn't look like a big
twelve quarterback. I think Brendan Soarsby does relative to what
you knew about him, or maybe didn't know about him
when Cam started to now what things have stood out
(06:30):
watching his development.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
My favorite part is he's had his best practices towards
the end of camp and seems to be and that's
not to say he had bad practices, but he would
like the day you were there, he was really good
the day before. I thought it was his best practice
he's had since he's been at ENC, and that included
fifteen spring practices. So he seems to be getting on
(06:54):
the same page with his wide receivers. He seems to
be a guy that's going to elevate the play of it,
guy like Xavier Henderson, who I think is an NFL
type wide receiver. Like that doesn't mean I think he's
like a first round pick, but I think Xavier Henderson is.
You know, he's six ' four, he's fast, he's got
good hands, he runs good routes. Those are the type
of guys to find a home in the league for
(07:16):
a while, and we didn't really get to see that
last year because they couldn't throw the ball over the top,
and they didn't throw the ball over the middle, and
those are two pretty important part places to throw the
football if you want to have a good passing offense,
and Soresby can do those things and being able to
(07:37):
throw to him, being able to have I mean, you
saw one of his great plays the other day. Joe
Royer has been the unquestioned MVP of this camp. And
to have a guy on the outside and then a
tight end and then you know, I like what they
have in the slot with Tyron Smith and and Aaron
(07:59):
turner By. There should be a bevy of weapons to
go with what we have all reasons to believe will
be one of the best running games in the nation.
So you know, offensively they should be much more aesthetically
pleasing MO. And that starts with Brendan's sword.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
I can't wait you see opens up the season two
weeks from Saturday. Full coverage as the season gets closer,
bearcad journal dot com. Follow Chad on x at Chad Brendle.
Always awesome to have you. We'll talk next week.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
All right. You can go to my Twitter and there
go to Kegan Nickoson's Twitter and watch me get thrown
in the cold tub. It'll it'll give you a laugh.
This evening.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
I may watch it on Luke. Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Thanks moth Daale.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
All right, it's twenty eight minutes after four o'clock tearing.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Are you with me?
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I'm here, all right.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
You are the biggest wrestling fan that I know. I
got an email here at four twelve this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Hi mo.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Real American Beer launched by WWE Hall of Fame wrestler
and global icon Hulk Hogan has made its debut in Ohio.
Hulk is taking phone in interviews tomorrow from three to four.
I'd love to try to get you on a schedule.
Do we want to have Hulk Cogan on tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (09:23):
That's your call.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I'm not using Hulk cogand now.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
So I had Hull Cogan on in twenty fourteen.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
It was the day the Bengals played the Broncos on
Monday Night Football, and he was like, the raw was
going to be at the arena like the next week.
So they asked like, can we get some wrestlers on
to promote the event, and I'm like, yeah, if you
can give me Hull Cogan, I'll do it.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
And then the next day they're like, yep, you got
a Hul Cogan on. So there's a.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Time in my life where I thought, Ben, it'd be
pretty cool to get Hulk Cogan on number one. I
don't know that I have any real interest in real
American beer.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Number two.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
If you've interviewed a Whole, I'm just checking because you're
the wrestling guy. If I say, if I say no,
I'm there's a part of me that can't believe I'm
about to say thanks, but no thanks to Whole Cogan.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Yeah, he's kind of.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Uh, it's kind of jumped the shark a little bit.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
A little bit.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, I mean, I know there was the tape and
then he had docker like what, I don't know that
we need Hull Cogan tomorrow. Correct, Okay, I'm just I'm
I'm I'm I'm running this through you. That was my
My first thought was yes, and then my second thought
was like, eh, i've interviewed him before. It was okay,
(10:41):
you know he played along and I got him to
do the you know what you're gonna do Peyton Manning
when you know I like, Also, I'm not really interested
in his beer.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Do we think Whule Cogan's beer tastes good?
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Probably not.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
This is probably more pub for his beer, saying we're
not gonna have him on than if I would have
had him on, Like all right, we're gonna pass on
Hull Cogan.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Then what happened to all your say, your say your prayers,
eat your vitamins and all that stuff. Beer is not
healthy for kids?
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Well, well, the vitamins he was taking at the height
of his you know powers, really aren't the kind of
vitamins anybody, I guess should be taken, right, correct, I
mean it should have been like, say your prayers, do
your steroids, right. So, yeah, I think I'm gonna pass
on Hull Cochin.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
I can't believe him doing this.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
It also says I'll be following up shortly with a
full list of Hulk's Ohio meet and greets. So he's
gonna be gonna be touring the state, haul coke and
go meet him, buy some of his beer, hard pass hard,
pass on Haul Cogan tomorrow. But good, hey, this is why,
this is why I need you.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
I need you.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
So if we have a chance to interview Hall Cogan,
you're the one that says, you know what, mo, it's
twenty twenty, and it is like if it was if
this show is being done like in nineteen ninety two. Yes,
if I was eight years old doing this show. Yes,
Now in my life, I don't know, Like if I
could ask about the things I want to ask, then
maybe the answer is yes, we're gonna talk about is beer.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I think we're okay.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
We do have a word of what's unfolded at that
Bengals Bears joint training camp. And I'll be honest with you,
it doesn't look good. We'll get to that. Tony Pike
joins us again. Plus we have Brediman and Jones. On baseball.
We're broadcasting from the Cincinnati Open, specifically the Western and
Southern fan appreciation. Uh booth fan appreciation booth?
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Right? Is that what it is? Fan appreciation? All tongue?
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Now I'm thinking about Hult Cogan. It's twenty nine from
five o'clock professional broadcaster right here. This is ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati's
