Speaker 1 (00:00):
It meant a lot coming in, you know, as an
older player, as a transfer. You know, from very beginning
as I was getting recruited, you know, the coaches and staff,
they they made it clear that they see me in
a role of leadership. They see me you know, coming
in and contributing on and off the field, and that
was a goal of mine.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
It was something I felt that I had the ability
to do.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Being around college football and kind of knowing the ins
and outs and having a lot of other transfers, having
a lot of freshmen and things like that that were playing.
I knew that I had the capability.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Of doing it, you know, with leadership and things like that.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
So you know, it also inspired me and inspired me
to you know carry my in of the waight you know,
on the field and also being a vocal leader at
safety and things like that, you know, just being a
positive influence the best I can.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
How hard is that when you're a new guy.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
I think coming in it's pretty hard, you know. I
feel like the biggest thing first you have to do is, uh,
you know, just kind of earn your respect, you know,
earn your respect and that that that goes into your
work ethic, you know, you're showing up every day being
the same person, you know, being positive, and you know,
I think the staff did a great job of making
this off season hard, and you know, I tried to
do my best step up and you know, encourage gods

(01:13):
through those hard days of winter workouts and fall camp
and spring spring practice, things like that, and you know,
going on into the season, you know it it also
can be challenging because you know, you know it's bigger
than you. You know, it always has been. It has
always been about the team, but you know even more
even more so now as being a captain, you know
you always have to, you know, look at the guys

(01:33):
and make sure everyone's on the same page.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
You played last season at Virginia Tech. You enter the
transfer portal and I'm sure you had a lot of options.
You chose to come to a program that didn't have
a great year last year. So give folks an idea
of some of the things you saw that made you
want to become a Bearcat. Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
To start off, you know, just as an older player,
I wanted to go to a place where you know,
I felt like I could contribute. I felt like, you know,
everything was trending up. You know, me and Coach Combs
had a great relationship during the recruiting process, and you know,
I respect his his history and you know what he's
done in college football, and from from the very beginning,
you know, he believed in me and told me kind

(02:10):
of the role he's seen for me. And also with
Coach sat you know, coming from our new players that
he's coached, a new coaches that he's coached with, and
everyone loves Coach Sad and this and his staff and
this complete staff. And when I talked to him about
last season, you know, instead of just shining away from
you know, he took it to the chin and he
embraced it. He embraced the season. He he told me

(02:32):
that that wasn't the season that that they had in
mind in no wayship or for him. He didn't make
any excuse, and he told me that they would used
that as fuel. And I think since I've been here
done just that. You know, we, like I said, made
this off season hard. We've brought in transfers, we brought
in a great freshman class, and you know, everything's trending up,
and not just with the staff and with the football team,

(02:52):
but with the entire program. You know, bringing in guys
like myself and just other guys like Swords and things
like that.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
You know, like we're on the right track. You mentioned
Carry Colmes.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
He's obviously somebody we're all familiar with, but very few
of us have been recruited by him. What's it like
to be recruited by Kerry colmesh Man.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
He's one of the best. You know.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
He's a guy that he's very very persistent. You know,
he goes out through what he wants and you know,
you have to respect him. He's a guy that everyone loves.
He has a lot of energy, and he's very blunt.
You know, he tells you exactly what it is. He
tells you the truthy and he has the track record
in the background and the knowledge that does He's been
doing football for years and not only just in college football,

(03:32):
but you know with Cincinnati, He's been a high school coach,
He's done NFL coaching and things like that, so he
has great experience. He has a lot of people that
you know, respect him and that know him. He has
a lot of reats, so you know, all in all,
as a player in my position, he's everything I want
and you know, just even to this day, Like you know,
every day he shows up, he's a special team coordinator.
You know, he has a chance to touch all the guys.

(03:52):
So I think the full team's affected by him tremendously.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
When you met with the media prior to Week one,
you talked about your dad and his military background, somebody
who rose to the rank of master sergeant, a long
military career. What was it like growing up in a
military family.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
You know, growing up it was just something that teaches
you discipline.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
You know, it's something that you kind of learned and
you kind of learn to appreciate as you get older.
You know, I remember growing up and seeing my dad,
you know, uh clean his boots, you know, eyeing his uniform,
and you know, he woke up at a certain time,
he was out the door at a certain time. And
even my mom, she did a great job of help
helping him and with his uh day to day, you know,
getting us ready. And not only just my dad, but

(04:34):
I have uncles in the military. I grew up around
a military like neighborhoods or I had neighbors are military,
and just seeing each and every every role of how
uh they went about things, how they went about their business,
and also how how my dad, how he taught me,
was you know, to stand up for myself, you know,
to to be a man, to look a man in
the eye, to shake a man's hand, to to say.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yes, ma'am, no, ma'am.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
And you know, ultimately just respect, you know, respect yourself,
respect women, respect elders, and just you know, kind of
demand a certain presence about yourself.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
You know, it's something I appreciate. When you were at
Virginia Tech. You did a podcast that.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
I listened to this week, and it's not it's not
uncommon for student athletes to talk about their majors or
fields of study or things they want to do after football,
but I was struck by how you talked in great
detail about your interest in real estate.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
So tell me how that came about, you know, going
to Virginia Tech.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
You know, again, I was kind of an older player
and I with in the realm of n I l
you know, you see a lot of things where it's
about you know, the money and things like that, which
teaches on you know, everything is great that in that
frame of mind. But you know, I want to step
out and real estate is something I really want to
look forward.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I look forward to.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Doing outside of football, And even while I'm doing football,
I know it's a lot of people that you know,
have a lot of knowledge and have an understanding of
real estate that would love to help us college players
and things like that. So once going there, you know,
I was giving and an opportunity, and I took advantage.
We went and we talked to different people around Blacksburg

(06:06):
and and I got a lot of knowledge I got,
you know, I met people business, business people and things
like that that I look forward to connecting in the future.
And also I learned a lot, you know, about the
real estate and general and kind of direction I want
to go in.
