Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coverage starts Sunday at four on ESPN fifteen thirty, the
official home of the Bengals. Twenty five from six.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'm a leger. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. We are
lucky enough two or three times during the football season
to spend some time with our guy, Danny Canell courtesy
of our friends at bet online. At a betonline dot
that for updated college football playoff, Conference, Heisman and College
Football Week twelve lines, and god knows, there's a lot
to talk about the day after the latest college football
(00:27):
playoff rankings have been released, Danny, what's going on?
Speaker 1 (00:31):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Mo?
Speaker 1 (00:32):
How's it going? Man?
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I can't believe it's already like dwindling at the last
three or four weeks of the college football season, we're
like having these playoff debates.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
It's insane how fast the season goes by. But I
love catching up with you.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Likewise, for my purpose, the expanded postseason has already served
its purpose because we have some really fun debates involving
teams we typically would not be talking about.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Oh, without a doubt, I think it's the debate that
becomes that much more compell and it's the amount of
teams that legitimately have a chance to make the playoff.
Last year, I looked this up just before we came on.
There were eight teams that had a chance to make
the four team playoffs. Anybody outside of that top eight
really was eliminated already. They had two losses, they didn't
(01:17):
have consequential games.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
It was done.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
We're still at a number where there are teams in
the back end. I mean there's some wild scenarios in
the SEC where a three loss LSU could still make
it to the SEC championship game, which puts them in
the playoff. Clempson another one down there at twenty. You
can go all the way down to twenty five and
make a case two lane as a team that is
ranked twenty fifth in the committee's eyes, they still had
(01:41):
a chance to win the American Conference, potentially hatch Boise
State as that group of five teams.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
So there's a bigger debate.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Way more teams have consequential games here to finish out
the season. I absolutely love it. I think it's been awesome.
I don't think it's the perfect system, but I do
love the debates that are being had.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
There are a lot of fun and look invariably, the
more teams involved, the more gripes, both from fans of
teams who are within the twelve and those on the
outside looking in. Which fan base has the most legitimate gripe.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
I think there's a couple, So for me it would
be SMU. SMU is ranked fourteenth, they are.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Eight to one.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
They've got two wins over top twenty five teams they are.
Their only loss is to BYU, who is ranked sixth
right now, so I think this is a team that
absolutely should be higher. And if you stack them up
next to Texas, who is ranked third and is eight
and one. Also their loss, of course an ugly loss
(02:41):
at home to Georgia, But where is their significant win.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I know they've beat some big brands.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
They beat the Florida Gators last week, and that's a
nice win. But the Florida Gators are not a very
good football team this year. Michigan another one that's not
a very good football team this year, and they didn't
know that in the week two when they faced them.
Oklahoma team they face without five wide receivers and another
team that is around five hundred.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Texas's resume isn't that great?
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I get it that the eye test has been pretty solid,
but the fact that there are eleven spots between SMU
and Texas shows me an.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Incredible brand bias.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
For like the typical blue blood brand that's had a
lot of success, SMU is a newcomer to the ACC,
didn't start very high in the preseason top twenty five.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
They're still trying to make a lot of ground to
catch up. All right.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
So, as I look at the odds to win the
national championship, not to make the playoff field, but to
win the national championship. Right now, Ohio State is the
betting favorite at plus three hundred, a lot of folks
are get the bet in the Buckeyes, certainly in this
part of the country. If I'm looking for better value,
give me a school that stands out.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
So I wouldn't go any of those top three teams.
Oregon was my pick to start the season plus three
seventy five. Like that's okay, you know I wouldn't take it, though.
It's still like the thing about if you like Oregon,
I would not touch them here. Maybe they lose in
the Big Ten Championship and their odds drops them, then
you snatch them up because I think they could potentially.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Still win it no matter what I'll go.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
So I'm looking at them right here to see how
far out I would go. Old Miss is a team
at nine to one that I think if they're playing
at their best and they get their defense going, which
has been probably the biggest difference of this team. Lane
Kiffin has always been known as an offensive mastermind. Their
offense is playing pretty good. They've had a lot of injuries,
but when they're healthy, which we saw this past weekend
(04:33):
against Georgia, they dominated Georgia both the sides of the football.
Their quarterback, Jackson Dart, He's got enough mobility to kind
of extend plays if they can't protect them. He's also
a good enough passer to get it done. I think
they've got the depth to do it. So at nine
to one, I think Old Miss is probably as far
down as I go. Then there's a pretty dramatic dropoff.
(04:53):
Mo Penn State twenty to one, Notre Dames twenty to one,
Tennessee's twenty two to one. I don't trust those teams
very much because of their quarterback.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Let me give you one more.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
If you really wanted to fly heer, Miami Hurricanes at
thirty three to one.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
I love cam Ward.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I think he's the type of player that could put
the team on his back, but they would have to
be absolute shootouts because their defense has been a sieve
and it would be fun to back them to watch,
but ultimately I think their lack of defense would catch
up to them. So I think from a value standplay
Ole Miss is about as far down as I go.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
So I'm rooting for Indiana because as a uc Bearcat fan,
I know what it was like to see your team
hovering around the College Football playoff and then in the
College Football playoff and how astounding that was. I use
obviously a Big Ten school, so it's a little bit different.
But still their ranked fifth, they're undefeated, They're playing the
Buckeyes next week. Do you give them more than a
(05:46):
puncher's chance?
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Absolutely? I do. I think this team is anything but
a fluke. I know some people don't.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
They look at their schedule and they say, well, they
haven't played anybody. They have dominated every single team on
their sched except for the last time out, and that's
the game that I actually so really good teams they
figure out ways to win when they're not playing at
their best, and their offense was struggling somewhat against Michigan,
but they found a way to keep it together to
(06:15):
get a couple defensive stops and beat Michigan, who Again,
it's not a great win, but I thought it was
sort of one of those Okay, xal, we showed to
everybody we can beat a traditional powerhouse in Michigan, we
can hang up, we can win a game that we
need to be there.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
In the fourth quarter. In Ohio State, they're a really
good football team.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
And I think Ohio State wins that game, but I
think Indiana can be extremely competitive with them. I think
their offense is very innovative. Curtis Wark is mobile enough
and he's got a lot of playing experience to do it,
and their defense flies around and tackles outstanding. The question
I have is what version of Ohio State are you
going to get? Because when they're at their best, I
(06:53):
don't think it's close. But they also almost had a
rough game against Nebraska where they didn't kind of show up.
They weren't kind of clicking on all cylinders. Here's the
one thing MO that scares me for Indiana because they're
my favorite story in college football, and I don't think
it's a fair test.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
They have to keep it close.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
And when I say it close, I would probably say
within ten points in order to make sure that that
loss doesn't prevent them from making the twelve team playoff,
because you would think a one lost Big ten team
should be in no matter what. But because Indiana's schedule
is weak and because they didn't start the preseason in
the top ten, they will be held to a very
tough standard.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
If they get beat.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Let's just say thirty one to three or thirty four
to ten, and it's a little bit ugly. The committee
would absolutely put a two or a three loss team
in over them from the SEC.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
So I think Indiana has to keep it close. I
don't think it's fair.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
I don't think it's right, but I think that's the
standard they have to hold up to all I can.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Get updated Heisman Trophy odds at bet online, where Travis
Hunter of Colorado is the betting favorite. I was in
Boulder to watch Cincinnati play Colorado a few weeks ago,
and this is going to sound like hyperbole. You know
a ton more about college football than I do. That's
the best player I've ever seen. Why should he not
win the Heisman.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
He should and I think he does.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
They've already kind of got to this position where they've
got seven wins, which is well above their total, and
even if they lose out, which I don't think they do.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
I mean, they're a double digit favorite this weekend.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
But I thought eight wins was the magic number to
get to for Travis Hunter to win, just to kind
of showcase you're not in a loser, you know, like
you're helping your team win games.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
But he played one hundred and sixty six naps last week.
I mean, that's in one game.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
That is insanity, and that's something we have not seen
done in the past fifty years of college football. Like
we've seen guys like Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey and
or other players play a little bit on both sides
of the ball. But Travis Hunter is playing every single
snap of the entire game.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
We do not see that.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
And oh, by the way, he's the best receiver on
his team, the best defensive back, and he could maybe
make a case that he's a beat wide receiver in
the country and the best defensive back in the country.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Hands down, He's.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
The best pure football player in the country as long
as they don't lose out again.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
I don't think they do.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
I think he should win the award, and if he doesn't,
I'll ask why even have the award if you're not
giving it to the best football player in the country.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
