Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dave Black, and you're listening to the Home of the
Bengals ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Right there you go. That's us. Dave has the week off,
no game this weekend. What's up, Moegger, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Thank you so much for listening. Hopefully you're having the
greatest Wednesday afternoon of all time. We have a lot
to get to today, including the Bengals. Because I need
I need help. I need help coming up with a
(00:25):
Bengals related poll question, not because I don't know what
the question is, but because well, it's Twitter's fault or
Ex's fall, and I'll make that make sense. Coming up
here in just a bit. Rick Brooring is gonna join
us as he does every Wednesday, in just about forty
minutes on XU and NKU basketball. Obviously, Rick had the
(00:46):
call last night on the NKU side of UC versus
the Norse, which we're gonna get to here in just
a bit. Richard Skinner a little bit later on on
the Bengals. You'll hear as well from the hitting coach,
the new Reds hitting coach, Chris Valaika, as he's talked
about some of the dudes he's gonna be working with
and is UC gonna play a home game in Kansas
City in football? It feels like the answer is yes,
(01:08):
and I'm here for it. I'll explain why coming up
at four twenty last night. I think it is cool
that you see in NKU have played a bunch of
times in recent years. I'm a Bearcat fan, so yes,
I'm thrilled that the Bearcats won the basketball game against
NKU last night. Look, man, you know in November, most
(01:28):
of these games aren't They don't generate a lot of buzz,
and I'm not gonna pretend that you see versus NKU
achieved a Skyline Chile Crosstown shootout level of buzz. But
to have two teams that close to each other in
proximity play in nku's venue, I think is cool. I
can understand why the Bearcats are not going to go back,
(01:50):
but I think it's cool that they played the game.
The game did have a little bit more punch last night,
and for the first I don't know, twenty five to
twenty eight minutes, it was a heck of a basketball game.
The Bearcats pull away, they win the game, they cover
for what it's worth, and they continue to I think
they continue to build excitement. Look, this is and has
(02:10):
been a season that if you're a Bearcat fan, you've
been looking forward to since last year ended. Because they
kept most of I think really all the good players
from last year's team you wanted them to keep, and
then they added a bunch of guys in the transfer
portal that kind of made this roster look like the
best that they've had in quite a while. This has
been the most heavily anticipated UC basketball season ever. Is
(02:31):
it going to match our expectations? Is U see really
going to finish in the upper half of the Big twelve?
Will they really have their name called on Selection Sunday?
Are they really gonna have the sort of team that
can make a run in March?
Speaker 3 (02:45):
And I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Those things remain to be seen were in November, right,
But there's been a lot of excitement. There's been a
lot of hype, and clearly they're playing teams they should beat.
They were heavily favored last night against NKU. They win
by sixteen points. But it's fun to watch a team
that hasn't done anything to ease the hype or throw
cold water on the hype, or give anybody reason for
(03:09):
pause in spite of the injuries. And I guess the
good news is day Day Thomas did come and make
his his season debut last night. But I think what
we have seen they've played well. They haven't played perfect,
and forget the results. I'm not making a big deal
about the results. They've They've played teams they should beat.
They hammered, crushed the three teams prior to last night.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And took a few pretty good blows.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
From n k U last night and won the game handily,
which was to be expected. But I think they have
offered tangible proof that the hype and excitement for this
team is deserved. I think Wes Miller has a club
that is going to be really hard to defend. They've
got shooters Simas Lukashis was doing his Steph Curry impersonation
(03:54):
last night. They've got quality point guards, good playmakers, day
Da Thomas coming back last night. You know, I think
last year, dayDay took a lot of heat from fans
because of who he's not, which is not fair. He
is a quality college basketball point guard and when he
wasn't available in the first three games, you saw Connor
Hickman and others assume those duties, and that's not the
(04:16):
best case scenario for UC offensively, when Gisel James has
to go to the bench. They've got quality point guards,
they have better bigs, they have more players.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
There are no and this is gonna sound harsh, and
I don't mean for it to be.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
There are no There are no Odioguamas, there are no
Rapalus ivan Awskis's, there are no Victor Lockin. I'm not
even sure that a kid that I really like, David
de Julius, gets a lot of playing time on this team.
I mentioned some players who weren't very good, some players
who were okay, But you just this team just looks
(04:51):
and feels different, and they look like they're gonna be
hard to play, and they look like they're gonna be
hard to guard. And yes, part of that is a
the result of Wes Miller bringing in some kids from
other programs that are really good. Part of it's also
individual player improvement. Like semos Lukashis, obviously, as a guy
who came from Butler and one games for the Bearcats
(05:13):
last season, looks like a more well rounded offensive player,
looks like a guy capable of getting off his own shot.
Better than he was a year ago. Looks like a
guy who could just do more offensively. Last year, we
watched Azi's bandego by the time he became eligible, you know,
we saw him catch a lot of lob passes, and
we saw at least glimpses into what he can do
(05:35):
on the defensive end. He did two things last night.
And again, I understand that they're not playing Big twelve opponents.
They're not playing ACC opponents. They play one on Saturday,
they're not playing Big East opponents, and they have two
of them in December. But I saw him do some
things last night that he simply could not do. It
was obvious that a big part of Darren Horn's game
(05:57):
plan was to throw double teams at him, understandably so,
because he's never really been a guy who's very good
with the basketball in his hands. The first time they
double teamed him, he caught it and made a power move,
split two defenders and scored. Can he do that against
the better teams they play in the Big twelve? Time
will tell, But he couldn't do that against anybody last year.
(06:20):
In the second half, he caught a pass near the
right block.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Same thing.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Double team comes over and Azaz is not exactly known
for his passing, and yet he throws up a really
nice cross cord pass to Connor Hickman, who makes the three.
That's the sort of play that disease Bandego could not
make last season. So yeah, you've seen an influx of
talent from elsewhere. You've also seen some individual players just
(06:44):
improve and round out their games a little bit from
last year. You see a team that's run good offense.
I was talking with somebody after the game last night,
and you know, I said, in the four games they've played,
I'm not sure they've had a possession where the shot
really wasn't good, or they've just passed the ball around
the perimeter and somebody's lifted an end of shot clock
(07:06):
heave with a second or two to go. I think
what they have done is shown you they have a
chance to be really, really good and perhaps, and again
take what you want from these games because of the opponents.
I don't know that they have done anything to make
anybody back off the excitement or the confidence they have
in this team. They are not perfect. They could have
(07:27):
been better defensively last night. There were times where it
felt like Nku got whatever they wanted mid range. They're
not a great rebounding team, especially without Daniel Skillings. I
think the early margin was eleven to two in favor
of NKU last night, but you know, look there was
I think if you're a UC fan, you know what
happened two years ago they lost to NKU on the road.
(07:49):
They scored what was at eleven points in the second half.
I think we all knew this was a better UC
team than that one two years ago, but it was
a road environment, it was a fired up crowd. It
is a good program. How are they going to respond
to the environment? How are they going to respond for
the first time this season to a team that provided
some resistance. I think for the most part, they passed
(08:09):
the test. Here's Wes Miller after the game last night.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
First off, these are way more difficult games that people
will give you credit for in college basketball, and that's
the reason you don't see a lot of games like this,
and you won't until they change the way that they're
viewed by the committee and others. I mean, to come
play a really, really good mid major team on the
road is way more difficult than any algorithm will give
(08:37):
you credit for. And every coach knows it, and that's
why people.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Will avoid it at all costs.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
As everybody in here knows.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
This is a contract that goes back a long time.
We inherited it, and I thought this game was unbelievable
for our team. I think every time I've coached against Darren,
which was once while I was in UNC Greensborough, now
three times here, I've been incredibly impressed with the job
he does. He's a great basketball coach. That is a
(09:05):
very well coached team. They're gonna compete to win their league,
and that was really good for us tonight. Like I'm
I'm really proud of the way that we handled some adversity,
but because of the way the rules are when we're
not doing games like this, and I wish they would
change him because it's so good for our team. I
thought this was good for us tonight. I thought we
(09:25):
got better tonight. I think there's a lot of things
that happened out there tonight that we can learn from.
So anyway, I'm very pleased with the win. I'm pleased
with the experience for our growth, and I think Darren's
gonna have a heck of a team. They they lose
it Purdue Florida State, and obviously they were. They had
(09:46):
to be upset with the way they played against Nickels
the other night in the game they should have won.
But he's a great coach, that's a damn good basketball team.
They're gonna figure it out.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
I thought earlier. There you go West Mitler after the
game last night, chatting with the media and sort of
outlining just the I guess unfortunate reality. Games like that
are not gonna happen. You see, is not going to
go back and play NKU. And from a pure basketball perspective,
you can understand why you don't really get credit in
the metrics and the net rankings and Ken Palm and
things like that for winning that game. But I do
(10:17):
think in ways that you can't necessarily measure analytically, there's
a benefit to playing a game like that last night.
First of all, as a fan, that was a little
bit more juice for a November game involving a power
for school in a mid major, a good mid major,
a very good program, and a cool venue in a
great environment. But you know, there's something to be said
(10:39):
about the experience of going on the road and playing
and playing in an environment that's not exactly the most inviting,
and having to play a team that in that environment
does provide at least a little resistance. Wes had to
be thrilled with his team for the most part last night. Again,
the rebounding wasn't awesome. Defensively, they have to get better,
but man more than anything, And I'm not making a
(11:00):
big deal about the wins. I think we all know
there was excitement for this team coming in and in
four games, I don't think they have done anything to
dissuade anybody from being excited about the Bearcats this season.
As for the Norris, look, the reality is they're judged.
And I know that Nicols game happened on Friday night
the way it did where they fell sixty one to
(11:22):
fifty nine, that was last Thursday. Actually, they've played a
very good Purdue team, a high major Florida State team,
and a nationally ranked Cincinnati squad. They're going to be
judged by how they play against the opponents in their league,
and league play starts here in a few weeks.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
I walked out of the arena.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Last night, I think in the same thing I did
two years ago, and I know there are folks who
got mad at me for saying it. The atmosphere was good.
They had a lot of students at the game last night.
They were fired up, they had a gold out. I
don't think the game was sold out, but it was.
You know, I go to a handful of NKU games
every year, and I liked the program. And I'm a
(12:00):
big Darren Horn guy, and as a native Northern Kentucky,
and I have a soft spot in my heart for
that institution. And I just I took in the environment
last night, and I can't help but say the same
thing I did two years ago after NKU beat you see,
which is I wish I wish that that team could
(12:21):
play in environments in their own building that are at
least somewhat comparable to what they played in last night.
I wish more people went to their games. I wish
more students went to their games. I said this after
they beat UC two years ago, and I you know,
folks got mad at me for saying it. But I
could promise you the people at NKU didn't get mad
(12:42):
at me for saying it.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
They shook that.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
They nodded their heads and said, yeah, damn, straight mo,
that's a good program, that's a fine institution. It's a
good place to watch a basketball game. I've been to
games in that arena where I felt like there might
have been three hundred people there. That's a slight exaggeration.
And I wish that a lot of those folks who
went last night that it wouldn't have been their first
(13:05):
game since UC came to NKU two years ago. And
I sincerely hope that you know, folks who are NKU
alums or NKU supporters that might have enjoyed themselves last
night have made plans to go watch the North when
they're playing a game that's maybe not as high profile.
I think that program deserves it. I think those players
(13:26):
deserve it. I think Darren Horne deserves it. I don't
tell people what to do with their time and money.
I don't believe in it. If you know your disposable
income is going to be used for something beyond college
basketball tickets, that's fine. But I could not help in
each of the last two times u SE has gone there.
Think about the other NKU games I've gone to and
just go, you know, I wish some of those students
(13:48):
who made that atmosphere really good both times that you
see has been in the building would show up when
they play other opponents. Seventeen minutes after three o'clock. I'm Oeger.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Numbers are five one, three, seven,
four nine fifteen thirty and eight six six, seven oh
two three seven seven six at Moeggar on X where
(14:10):
we ask pole questions. Thanks to my friends at United
Heartland Insurance, who's in studio with me today.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
We have a problem with today's pole question.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
I'll tell you what it is when we come back
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station eight four after three.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Karon, what what are we doing?
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Is?
Speaker 2 (14:30):
It's like it's not sweetest day in November? What are
we What kind of music are we playing here?
Speaker 3 (14:37):
You're you're getting in the mood?
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Aren't five music?
Speaker 3 (14:40):
That's wrong with No, there's nothing wrong with it.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
I just did you've said anything? No, Will Smith Path
nineteen ninety one.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
No chests, sounds sounds like, sounds like sexy time is
about to happen in studio, and I a football and
basketball to talk about, So you know, I'm not not
a post, not a post I mean, this is very
nice just to It feels like you're trying to set
a tone here that I don't know that I'm good
at setting. On sports talk radio, if you missed Paul
(15:08):
Danner Junior yesterday, he was a terrific So was our guy,
Sean sayed, Stats and Scheme. He took on the unenviable
task of watching the Bengals Chargers tape, and we talked
about it. Better him than us. Go listen to those conversations.
Call it. You could also hear the Toni and Mo

If you want to watch it Wilder, Hebron and Ridgewood
Longneck Sports Grill.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Go there, now, go there now, I said, we'll jump
back into the Bearcats. The shame of like last night
is had you s gotten upset, I'd get nothing but
UC calls. Today they won, so I'm not holding my breath,
but maybe maybe Speaking of daner yesterday, he talked about
(16:14):
lou Ana Rumo and the possibility and one might say
the likelihood of him losing his gig at the end
of the season. And there's no shortage of conjecture about
Zach Taylor and whether or not it's time to move
on from him. And I think there's really good conversations
to be had. I know Bill Simmons on his podcast
(16:35):
and others have talked about Bill Belichick being perfect for Cincinnati.
I I don't know that I'm that interested in talking
about something that seemingly has no chance of happening.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Here's what I'm struggling with.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Okay, so we could we could spend all the time
in the world, if you want, talking about other coaches
and who would be best suited to be the head coach?
Should they move on from Zach? Should they move on
from lou Anaerumo during the season? Why wait till after
the season? Can he save his job? The reality is, man,
regardless of what they do with the coaching staff, regardless
(17:11):
of how you feel about Zach, regardless of how you
feel about Duke Tobin, this team has in a very
short amount of time caused us to assemble quite the
off season to do list, So we do poll questions
on this show on X thanks to United Heartland Insurance,
(17:33):
go to UHIS dot com. Now, if you're a Twitter user,
even if you're one of those people that left Twitter
or left Twitter to go to another app, which totally fine,
you know that if you do a poll question, they
only give you four choices. So when we do a
poll question, it's you know, there can only be four choices,
or three choices, or two choices. Sometimes I have fun
(17:55):
with it to make it about one choice. Here's the problem.
If I were to do a po question about the
Bengals off season to do list, what the biggest priority is? Right, like,
what's the biggest what's item number one? I've got more
than four. I can't do the poll question because you
know they're gonna have to replace T Higgins, who's not
(18:17):
gonna be on the team next year. As much as
it might pain me to say that and paying you
to hear it, they need help on the offensive line.
They need long term solutions, they need depth, they need
short term solutions. They certainly need help on the interior.
It feels like they've gotten it right long term at
right tackle, but they need offensive line help. You know,
(18:39):
you hear it all the time. You can't have enough
offensive lineman. I'm not completely convinced you can add someone
at running back. Pass rush aside from Trey Hendrickson has
been terrible, so you could use edge rushers, you could
use interior rushers, could use some help with your run
defense as well. It'd be great if you can find
an inside defensive lineman who could help with both linebackers
(19:04):
don't make plays. You could use upgrades at that position.
The cornerback room is suddenly turned awful. Cam Taylor Brick
got benched the other night. Dax Hill's not playing this year.
I don't know what the long term prognosis for DJ
Turner is gonna be, but there's at least gonna be
a little bit of an injury question about him going
(19:24):
into the season. If we are spending time a year
from now still talking about Jesse Bates, they will have
failed dramatically at safety. But where we are right now,
we're still talking about Jesse Bates because Geno Stone hasn't
worked out and the return of Han Bell really hasn't
worked out and kind of feels like they're not exactly
high on Jordan.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Battle right now. So like more than four?
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Man, Like I got wide receiver, running back, O line,
D line, interior, D line, edge linebackers, corners, and safeties,
and you might want to add kicker to the list.
I guess that's a long list, man. So number one,
I got to whittle that down to four for our poll.
Question number two, have the conversation about Zach Taylor, get
(20:11):
excited about hiring another coach. Come up with your own
list of guys that you wish the Bengals would replace
Zach Taylor with. Wonder who the team's defensive coordinator is
going to be next year. Debate the merits of moving
on or keeping lou An Rumo. When you're done with that,
look at the real problem. This roster is not good now.
(20:34):
That sounds obvious when they're four and seven. But if
there's a conclusion that I think the eleven games they've
played so far could help you arrive at, it's that
the roster is woefully deficient. I certainly think in relative
to how we talked about them coming into the season.
(20:55):
The quarterback is great. Right now, they have two great
wide receivers. One of them is not going to be
here next year. Trey Hendrickson is awesome? What else you got? So?
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Yeah, man, focus on the coaches if you want.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
The bigger issue for me is whoever is in charge
of the roster next year, probably still Duke Tobin has
their work cut out for them, and that's the bigger
deal to me. It's illustrated by the fact I have one, two, three, four, five,
I have nine items. Our pole questions give us four options.
(21:29):
How do we whittle that down to four? Your phone
calls are coming up. Is it a bad roster or
is it bad coaching? We're late for a break twenty
nine from four five, one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty,
you're gonna hear what former Bengal Andrew Hawkins had to
say about this team through eleven games. After sports headlines,
of which admittedly there aren't much Next on ESPN fifteen thirty,

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Scott Saderfield Tonight on ESPN fifteen thirty from the original
Montgomery and Andrew Hawkins, longtime, long time or long ago
friend of the show back when he was a Bengal,
former Toledo Rocket who once lost a wager to me
about a UC Toledo game and then didn't pay off,
is now part of NFL Live on ESPN. Here is
(23:41):
what Andrew young baby Hawk so to speak, had to
say about his former team.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
What gives with these Bengals.
Speaker 7 (23:49):
It pays me to say it, but the real slim
shady stood up. That's what happens with the Bengals. They
are the team that you're looking at that their record
shows one in six and one score games.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
When you have a game like this, when you needed to.
Speaker 7 (24:00):
Get this w and you come out in the first
half and you have no fight, it tells me who
you are and it makes everything look crystal clear. In
the light second half. They figured it out. They played better.
But this team just isn't great. They look like a
great team because of the way that Joe Burrow and
Jamar Chase have been playing. But when you look at
their wins, they beat the two and eight Giants, the
(24:21):
two and eight Browns, the three and seven Panthers, and
the two and eight Raiders, they're just not that team,
and they showed it.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
And now we could kind of.
Speaker 7 (24:29):
Put the bed what this future would look like as
a pretends to the twenty twenty four seas.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Yeah, yeah, there you go, Andrew Hawkins, and he's right.
And by the way, he mentioned how they've done against
bad teams, with the exception of the Raiders game, none
of those wins were extraordinarily convincing. Like you watch Lions
and they've destroyed some good teams, but they've just pummeled
inferior opposition. Fifty two to six over the Jags, what
(24:54):
was it, forty nine to six over the Dallas Cowboys,
Like there's there's something to be said about that. Our
guy Paul wrote about the Bengals in close games, and
there are luck variables, and I don't discount that. But
I'm also a believer in life and in sports, you
create your own luck, man. I mean, yeah, the Bengals
(25:15):
put themselves at the mercy of a few things that
went against them late in the game late in the
first half. They also look completely ill prepared in the
first half defensively, And sure, yeah, they played better in
the second half, but they looked completely ill prepared defensively.
They get off to a slow start. Like these are
things that when they happen early in the season, you
(25:35):
talk about them being outliers, You talk about them things
that could be rectified, or perhaps not being truly representative
of what the team is. I agree with with Andrew.
We know what they are, and it sounds so basic
and obvious because you could look at their record now
and easily arrive at this conclusion. But if you've watched
them play the majority of these games, and certainly if
(25:57):
you've watched them play all of them, there's just not
a lot to like. There's a lot to like about
the quarterback, a lot to like about some of the
offensive players. There's not a lot to really like about
the team. Yeah, a lot of that can come back
to coaching and preparedness and readiness, and I think those
things were lacking on Sunday Night. But you know, I
(26:19):
don't remember anybody during the off season saying that Cam
Taylor Brick couldn't play corner at a comparable level to Chadobeo. Wuzie,
dude got benched on Sunday night. That guy's been awful
this season, and you could apply the same criticism and
aim it at so.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Many guys on that side of the football. We have
folks waiting on hold.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
We'll get to here momentarily five point three seven four
nine fifteen thirty and eight six six seven two three
seven seven six. I will oblige those who want us
to talk about Bill Belichick today because I have a
question and uh, you see, is maybe going to play
a home game in Kansas City and football and I
completely understand. Plus we'll hear from the Red's heading coach
(27:05):
Chris Valaika, and I'll tell you the thing that has
me most excited about the Reds moving forward. All that
coming up and more. But first, our guy Rick Burring
on XU and NKU on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
Hello, this is Tyler fourteen from four.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Oleger On Wednesdays, we
chat with our guy Rick Burring Musketeer Report dot com
and the color analysts on NKU men's basketball broadcasts and
and one of the hosts of The Skinny Podcast and
the host of the Darren Horn Show. I've gotten all
the plugs in by now right.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
I appreciate it as always. New Darren Horn shows out
tonight ten thirty pm with the assistant coach Dave Harris.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Very good. All right, that's on?
Speaker 8 (27:51):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Have they renamed as a Bally Sports.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Fran Dual TV now? I believe yeah?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
And Dual TV very good?
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Uh. From an NKU perspective, what was your big takeaway
from the game last night?
Speaker 1 (28:06):
I think Sam Vinson's play, especially in the first half,
the way he was aggressively taking the ball to the
basket is athleticism against those UC defenders. It looked like
he was back to being Sam Vinson, and through the
prior games that hadn't really been the case. And I
think for NKU fans that was a big concern.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
You know, they they sandwiched that loss to Nichols in
between losses to high major teams. What have you seen
in those four games that tells you anything about how
they're going to do, how they're going to do in
the in the games they're ultimately going to be measured by.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
Well, I think a few things that stand out from
a positive perspective are they're rebounding first and foremost. I mean,
they out rebounded Purdue, they out rebounded Cincinnati, two teams
that I expect to be good to rebounding teams this year.
And then against Florida State, who's another big athletic team
that rebounds, well, they right with them. They didn't out
rebound them, but they were right there. So typically that's
(29:04):
in an area where NKU struggles a little bit, especially
with their style of defense that matchup zone. They oftentimes
are ranked lower in terms of their defensive rebounding percentage.
So far, they've been good in that regard and they've
been great on the offensive glass as well, So I
think that's a really good sign. I also think that defensively,
they're farther ahead right now than where they typically are
(29:26):
at this time of year. A lot of times that
matchup zone, it takes the time to get the chemistry
going and get the guys all on the same page,
knowing where each other are going to be, figuring out
their rotations and getting comfortable with that. But so far
this year, I mean, I think you saw early in
that UC game, they looked pretty sharp with that, and
that would be a good sign as well.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Would you consider them favorites to win the league?
Speaker 9 (29:50):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
It's so tough now with the transfer portal, everyone has
like almost an entirely new roster in the Horizon League,
So trying to decipher where they're at and how much
the early non conference results mean for a lot of
these teams as difficult. I think when you look at
the top of the conference, Milwaukee and Prdue Fort Wayne
were picked ahead of them. Milwaukee, it feels fairly legitimate.
(30:12):
They look like a team that should be at the
top of the league. Prdue Fort Wayne, I'm not so
sure about. I think NKU was right there with them,
if not better. So we at the end of the day,
the short answer is, I think they'll definitely be competitive
for a league title again this year.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Rick Boring with this Musketeer report dot com Xaviers playing
Siena tonight. They're coming off a very solid performance against
Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon. What do we learn about
the Musketeers in their first game against the high Major.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Well, I think it definitely eased some of the concerns
you saw the first two by games they played, they
didn't cover the spread, and you know, now with the
net system, all the fans are very worried about that
expected margin of victory, So I think that was a
little bit concerning coming out of those two games. They
played better against Jackson State, but still it's Jackson State.
(31:01):
So to see them play really well against an ACC
team that was picked to be third in their conference,
that just alleviated a lot of concerns from the first
few games. I think the bald movement in the three
point shooting has been outstanding so far, and one of
the things that really looked good in this last game
was the toughness of the defense, their physicality. They showed
(31:21):
up in a way against wake Forest that they really
hadn't in the first three games defensively, and I think
for Xavier fans who expected this team to need to
outscore everybody, that's a really positive development.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
As well. Is there anybody in this MTE that they're
in that can challenge them?
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Well, I think Michigan is a team that's struggling a
little bit, but it's not a bad roster. People were
pretty high on them coming into the season, so that's
one to look out for. South Carolina kind of in
the similar boat. I think people were higher on them
coming into the season. They really haven't performed up to standards.
So I think if you ask most people, Xavier should
be the favorite to win this event, but they should
(32:01):
get too decent tests here, if not top twenty five teams,
but maybe more more like top fiftiest teams.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Very good ten thirty tonight, saw, I can watch the
Xavier game. I can watch the Darren Horn Show, and
then by the time I'm done with that, you'll have
the Xavier game color covered of like a whole night
of Rick Boring in front of me.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yeah, if you don't mind, just log on to Musketier Report.
If you're watching that Darren Horn Show, the message board
will be firing on all cylinders and I should have
a recap up there shortly.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
That'd be great.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Do you want me to start posting on the message board?
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Oh my god, I would love that.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Yes, really please? Do do you think if.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Just a director of common sense, director of coming sen.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Well, I mean, do people on message boards like use
their real name and stuff or is it a bunch
of you know, user names and no one knows who
it is? Because what I would want to know is
do you think I would be like what I get
a friendly greeting in the message board room.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
I think from what I've gathered, you are your view
as the most positive local media member by Xavier fans.
Really most people seem to believe yes, well, because Lance
is a ucy guy but also a butler guy. Oh
so Zavior fans really dislike his assessment of the Musketeers.
You are a you sy and a dating guy. But
(33:13):
for whatever reason, Xavier fans think you've been fair about
them for the most part, I have pretty much anyone else, Yeah,
I would agree with that, and everyone else aside from
Bill Cunningham, is pretty much clearly against the Musketeers in
the eyes of Xavier fans. So I rank you probably
top of the list.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
Well, now, now I feel like maybe tonight, maybe about halftime,
I'll jump in and just share my thoughts and see
what people have to because when I when I go
to games, and I love going to Xavier games, invariably
someone will say to me, what are you doing here?
Often it's somebody who works at Xavier.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
So that's not nice.
Speaker 9 (33:48):
They shouldn't be doing that.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
They're nice, They're nice. I mean, they're not like they
escort me out of the building. But I at times
get the like, oh what are you doing here? Are
you lost? Did something happen? And I and usually I'm like,
I'm here to here to watch the Muskies play. And
so I didn't know if I, like I chimed in,
if I'll get like a hey, what are you doing here?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
That sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
No, I think they'd love for you to be on
the message board. But I did notice you said they
don't escort you out of the building, which is more
than you can say at other arenas in this region.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
You know, it's it's been I still get flashbacks. I
had flashbacks last night to being kicked out of that
NKU game. But I think if you if you include
you know, if you include the year that you see
played at that arena, I'm I'm like like a thirty
game streak of not being kicked out. So I'm I'm
I've kind of successfully put that behind me, and I
don't I don't think that referee is doing games anymore.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
So I think I'm good.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Yeah, your win percentage of not getting kicked out of
games a trust arena is probably over ninety percent. Now
it's pretty strong.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Yeah, all right, well I appreciate the uh, the chat
as always, and good to see you last night.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
We'll talk next week, all right, thanks all forreiate it.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
Rick Boring Musketeerreport dot com and a host of the
Darren Horn Show and also NKU Radio color commentator and
the host of the Skinny Podcast.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
And that guy's got a lot of jobs, a lot
of jobs.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
The folks from United Heartland Insurance are with us here
in studio. Proud sponsors. Do we go with Proud we
go with proud sponsors of our our pole questions on
X Absolutely very good. Is this a good time for
me watching a radio show in person? How about I
come to U, HI and S and just stand there
(35:33):
while you guys answer insurance questions.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
I could do that all right next week.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
I've thought about, because you know, my mom lives in
Burlington very close to the Route eighteen office. Just popping
in and stand there and stand and watch. I could
do that. Very good.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
It's exciting.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
I can answer phone. I do that and hear them
basically a second. We're gonna answer phones in a few minutes.
I'm basically a receptionist. I could do that. Very good.
Uhi ns dot Com offices in Burlington, Hamilton, and Cincinnati
will handle your insurance needs whatever it is, and they have.
We've been thrilled to have them with us to sponsor
(36:12):
our poll question on x at Moegger and I hope
it's worked out for them. We've enjoyed having them with us.
Speaker 10 (36:19):
All right.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
We are guests free until five twenty.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
That rarely happens during football season, but it's a bye week,
so five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty is
our phone number. The Internet wants the Bengals to hire
Bill Belichick. You might want the Bengals to hire Bill Belichick.
I think we both know the Bengals are not going
to hire Bill Belichick. I'm not sure that Bill Belichick's
the best candidate out there. That might be a bit
(36:45):
of a hot take. We'll get to that coming up
here in just a bit. On Friday afternoon, it was
reported that the UC Nebraska football game next year is
not going to be played in Indianapolis. Instead, it's going
to be played at arrow Head Stadium. And I think
there's some Bearcat fans who are disappointed. I'm disappointed. I
(37:07):
think there are some bear Cat fans who are mad.
I'm not mad. I think there are some bear Cat
fans who are wondering why they're doing this. It's quite obvious,
and we will get to that answer coming up in
just about twenty five minutes. We have a lot to
get to between now at six o'clock. Listen anytime anywhere
on the iHeartRadio app. It's four minutes away from four
(37:27):
o'clock on Moegar. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
This report is sponsored You're ready for some football? We
are burrow to Chase happens here.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
This is the official home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Right, that's us. It's five minutes after four o'clock. This
is ESPN fifteen to thirty on Moeger. I really do
appreciate you listening today. By the way, technically on Wednesdays
we chat with one of the experts from Ortho Cincy.
And obviously the DJ Turner injury is something that we
have to spend some time on. The broken classical, which
(38:09):
is it's awful for DJ, it's awful for the Bengals.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
We're gonna push that to next week.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Some scheduling issues as we say, so if you're wondering,
we'll learn more about.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
The good news is the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
I mean, we're Cincinnati sports fans, so I guess, I
guess the worst could happen, But DJ, no Bengal player
is going to get injured in the game, at least
this weekend because they have a bye, So there you go. Also,
just FYI, no Bengals game plan tonight because of the bye,
so you'll have to wait till next Wednesday to hear
Dan Horden Dave Lapham on the Bengals as they get
(38:43):
set for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who play tomorrow night. I
get what they could get injured during pre Yeah, I
you know, they're not like they're not doing anything, but
there's no game this weekend that they'll get injured in.
But yes, the Bengals unfortunately have suffered their fair share
of injuries during practice, which is unfortunate. All right, should
(39:03):
we take phone calls?
Speaker 5 (39:05):
Sure?
Speaker 10 (39:05):
I do that.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
We haven't done that this week.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
In a minute, since you talk to your loving audience.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
You know what has been You know, we do the
Tony and Mo Football Show, and then for reasons that
I've never completely understood when we do on Mondays, we
don't take calls for reasons that are not really worth
getting into. But on Tuesdays we do our show at
Buffalo Wild Wings when technology allows us, and for whatever reason.
(39:36):
I remember, years before I started doing this show, Rance McAllister.
I'd listen to him, and at times I'd work with
him and he would do shows out somewhere, and he
would say, like, when we do the show out somewhere,
the phone doesn't ring people just for whatever reason, even
frequent callers, people who call talk shows on a regular basis,
are just reluctant to call a show when the host
(39:57):
isn't in studio. The good news is we're in studio today.
So I was going to say, you have no excuse
except for just the boring content that I'm there. Let's
see here, mister Ace, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty, Good afternoon.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
How are you?
Speaker 10 (40:16):
I am well, Mo, I am well. But our Cincinnati
sports team, seen from a football perspective, is not very
well from college or from the pro level. I'm just
going to hammer it on a home Cincinnati made a
horrible hire in the football coach. I don't see why
(40:36):
you hire a coach that shows that they exceeded and
succeeded and were successful at being a mediocre coach. And
I think that that was one of the worst hires
that we have made in program history. A coach that
was successful with staying seven and five and six and
(40:57):
six at a program that I think at the time
was in the downturn from where they had been from
the Lamar Jackson years to being the Scott's Setterfield years,
because I don't think Setterfield he was not the head
coach when Lamar Jackson was there. So to hire that
(41:18):
coach and for us as a fan base too, I
don't I don't even know how how the fans even
could really try and last for ourselves to get behind
him as a coach. But we were thinking that after
Luke Fickle had left, he didn't leave Recover there. But
unfortunately we just have had the performances we have had
(41:41):
to deal with from a college perspective.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Yeah, I mean, I mean when when when when he
was hired, A lot of folks scratch their heads and wondered,
like that's the best they can do, and look they
they prioritized right or wrong. They prioritized somebody who had
been a head coach at the Power five level, which
Scott had. But you know, I think, I think even
if you're a patient you see football fan, you have
to acknowledge that little about the twenty two games that
(42:10):
he has coached in would take someone like yourself and
change their mind. And I know I've said this for years.
One of the one of the responsibilities as the football
coach that you see, whether you like to hear this
or not, is to energize the fan base. Brian Kelly,
(42:32):
whatever you want to say about his faults and whatever
you might not like about him, he was brought here
in part because he had a personality that could energize
the fan base, and then the play on the field
continued to energize the fan base. Luke Fickle's personality was
a little bit different, but very early on in his tenure,
I think mostly through the recruitment of local players energized
(42:54):
the fan base, and then after a rough first season,
the play on the field, the product on the field
energize people. I think it's going to be really hard
to get people energized about UC football for the rest
of this season and going into next year. I don't
think that that's an out of bound statement. I think
it's going to be really hard, and you know, look,
(43:16):
the reality is when he was not a popular higher.
I mean, there's no other way of putting it. I
sat here for days on end after they announced Gott
Sadafield was the coach. He was not a popular higher.
Now I do believe that most reasonable people gave him
a pass for last year.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
I did.
Speaker 2 (43:36):
It's never been more difficult to be a coach in
a new place in this era. But I also think
it's never been easier to get things turned around in
years two and three, And for a while it looked
like that was happening. They were five and two. A
month ago, we're talking about them being five and two
and maybe getting to eight or nine wins. But to
see things unfold the way they have in recent weeks
(44:00):
has almost washed away all the goodwill that was built
up as the Bearcats got off to that five and
two start. The loss against Iowa State was really troubling,
not because they lost, not because they.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
Got outplayed poor discipline.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
I think a lot of folks really questioned the play
calling and the overall offensive approach as the game went on,
and I think very fairly so, Iowa State didn't look
like a team that, frankly was dramatically more talented than
you see. I think there is a real sense of,
you know, players maybe not being used correctly. I think
(44:39):
you could wonder that about Joe Royer, and I think
you could wonder that about Trey Hendrickson. And I mean, look,
I Scott Saddlefield's a really, really nice man. I do
think they've done a good job in upgrading the talent
from what it was a year ago. But it's going
to be really hard to argue things are going in
the right direction. I think even if they finished six
(45:02):
and six. And I hate to say that, because you know,
a month ago, I was the guy going, look, hey
they're five and two.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
This is going in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (45:10):
It's gonna be really hard to say that if this
team might be hard to say that if they win
their last two. But if they win their last two,
it's a winning record at seven and five that will
have exceeded I think even some of the more optimistic
projections five and seven don't. I don't know how you
energize people. I don't know how you get people excited
about this. I don't know how you convince people you
(45:31):
know what this is. Folks need tangible proof, and to
go from three to nine to five and seven is
not going to be tangible proof for a lot of
people that this is really going in the right direction.
And I do not think he's going to lose his job.
I do not think the university has eighteen million dollars
laying around to buy out a head coach. But I
(45:54):
think the dynamic is going to be really interesting going
into next year unless this gets turned around dramatically over
the next couple of games. Because again they're five and two.
It really did feel like they had a chance, and
I didn't really feel like they had a strong chance
of playing in the Big twelve championship game, but you
just started to look at the standings and started to
handicap the race. You're not doing that now they're big
(46:17):
underdogs on Saturday. I don't know what the atmosphere is
going to be like for the TCU game. It just
it really has turned bad quickly, and as frustrating as
some of the closer losses they've had has been. I
thought the one on Saturday night was very sobering that
(46:41):
that did not look quite frankly like a very well
coached football team. I don't know if there's a nicer
way to say. Now, you know, it may prove to
be an outlier and a god knows. I watched some
of Luke Fickles teams here in twenty seventeen and thought like, when,
when does the change occur? Because they looked a lot
(47:02):
like a Tommy Tubberville team and things got turned around.
Speaker 11 (47:07):
But and.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
The reality is are a lot of folks I don't
know where miss Race went, but there's a lot of
folks who fought that when they hired Scott Sadderfield, and
I think would probably argue that very little has happened
to change their mind, and that's that's unfortunate. Fourteen minutes
after four o'clock, UH our numbers are five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixty six seven oh two,
(47:31):
three seven seven six Time for one more Phil, You're
on ESPN fifteen thirty. Good afternoon, No, how are you now?
I am awesome? How about yourself?
Speaker 9 (47:42):
I'm great?
Speaker 1 (47:42):
I need your help or actually your collarself. Though Oka
growing up in southern Indiana in the seventies and eighties.
So do you it talk if we were talking about
a ten and O IU team Thostman's basketball team. Never
in the history of ever, what I thought that IU
football would be ten? And oh I'm playing a big game.
What I need to know is where can I watch
(48:04):
the game in this city? Because because I don't want
to watch the IU football game in a room full
of people who need to make spelling a four letter word.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
A group project.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
All right, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
So what you are looking for is you're looking for
the IU bar in Cincinnati.
Speaker 9 (48:24):
Then go all right, I don't need I.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
Don't know what the IU bar in Cincinnati is, but
we will put out an APB.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
All right, So I get what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
You don't want to go to a place and there's
going to be a billion Ohio State fans there, And
I get it right. So you're looking for where the
IU bar in town is? Have you have you done
any research on the Internet.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
I have, and it would appeared that the high Mark
it's listed at that but I mean, but that's just
a Google search, And so when I look at the
high Mark's website, it doesn't really like I don't see
any IU gear there.
Speaker 10 (48:59):
Soon.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
I'm sure there's a I'm sure there's a Cincinnati chapter
of the Indiana University Alumni Association, right, I hadn't.
Speaker 1 (49:09):
Thought about that. I didn't actually attend to you, because.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Fine, that's fine, But I mean, like I know this
from being a UC fan, I didn't attend UC that. Sometimes,
like if you go, if you go in a certain city,
you look just google certain city, like let's say Chicago,
the Chicago chapter of the UC Alumni Association, they will
post like on their Facebook page information about watch parties
in that. In fact, I'll tell you I was in
(49:33):
New York for a wedding two years ago and UC
was playing on the road against Tulsa, and I did that.
I typed in University of Cincinnati Alumni Association, New York chapter.
And you know what was remarkable is the same bar
that was listed for UC fans was also listed for
IU fans. Now, they weren't playing at the same time
(49:54):
and weren't playing each other or playing at the same time,
but it was the same bar.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
So let's do that. We'll look it up. I'll look
it up here during the break.
Speaker 2 (50:02):
But if anybody has any intel as to where an
IU friendly place is going to be in the greater
Cincinnati area. Now, like, where do you live.
Speaker 1 (50:12):
Now, I'm in Oakley.
Speaker 3 (50:15):
Do you think if you like.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
Went out to Lawrenceburg, which you know it's a little
bit of a hike, but if you went out to Lawrenceburg,
like the Captain's Tavern in Lawrenceburg is a cool spot.
Speaker 3 (50:26):
Like you're in, You're in the state of Indiana.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
Are there spots in Lawrenceburg or you know, in in
that part of Indiana that borders in northern Kentucky in
southwest Ohio, would there be a higher likelihood of at
least there being an IU friendly place as opposed to in.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
The Buckeye State.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
More than likely.
Speaker 3 (50:48):
All Right, we're gonna figure this out. I will do
whatever research I.
Speaker 2 (50:53):
Can and if if, if there are And by the way,
I like now that Tommy Turberville is throwing shade at Indiana.
Speaker 3 (50:59):
I nothing against the Buckeyes. I you can't win by it.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
I want Indiana to steamroll everybody and win the national championship.
First of all, I know what it's like when, like
college football fans of typical blue blood programs, they they
feel all weird. When somebody is like an up and
comer and they come from nowhere and they crash the party,
they get really weird about it. I use that team
this year saw them all in. But when Tommy Tuberville
is throwing shade at you, I really become your ally.
(51:24):
So go Hoosiers and we're gonna get answers, I promise Phil.
Speaker 1 (51:27):
Okay, all right, Tommy Tuberville couldn't find his butt with
the map two hands in a flashlight, so I'm on
your side on this one.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
That's that's very well said.
Speaker 2 (51:36):
All right. I you if there's a place for my
guy Phil to watch his beloved Hoosiers, let us know
five point three seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. And like
if you're in Felspot, you'll want nothing against the Ohio.
So I say it is a huge following here, Like
I get it. If you're a fill, do you want
to go and watch a game in a bar where
there's gonna be predominantly Buckeye fans, which is probably gonna
(51:57):
be in the case in the most bars in Cincinnati.
All right, we'll see.
Speaker 9 (52:01):
Then you decide you want to be a buck, out
of your life changes forever.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
Yeah, I don't. I don't not in this game. Like
Tommy Turberville's well but hurt because like you talk about
somebody who just not even talking about the politics part
of it. But when he opines on the state of
college football, like he's mad that players are breaking contracts,
not understanding the scholarships aren't contracts. This is a man
who was more than happy to break contracts when he
was a head coach. He's also a man who was
(52:26):
happy to not really do any work when he was
a head coach.
Speaker 10 (52:28):
Here.
Speaker 2 (52:29):
Uh, but when Tommy Turberville throws shade at you, I
throw my support behind you.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
So go Hoosiers.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
And I like Kirk Signetty and Bloomington's a fun town
and IU fans were cool to us when you see
played out there. So yes, I'm rooting for the Hoosiers,
says here, Kevin has a destination for Phil?
Speaker 3 (52:47):
Can I go?
Speaker 2 (52:47):
I know where?
Speaker 3 (52:48):
Late Terren? Can I go ahead and do this?
Speaker 5 (52:49):
Sure?
Speaker 3 (52:50):
All right, Kevin? Where should Phil go watch the game?
Speaker 8 (52:53):
Phil should go watch the game? So I'm a i'm
a i'm a UK guy. You should go watch the
game at the White Castle, uh in Walton. Yes, that's
the only place in the world that wants to watch
(53:14):
the I you game.
Speaker 3 (53:16):
Well, there and they're playing, They're playing Ohio State.
Speaker 8 (53:21):
I say, it's the only one. It's the only one. Sorry, sorry, aunt,
it's the only one.
Speaker 2 (53:25):
So he has to go to the White Castle to
do White castles. I have a not who goes inside
a white Castle.
Speaker 8 (53:32):
It's the only television white Castle.
Speaker 2 (53:34):
Who is who goes, who actually walks into a white Castle?
And who goes to White Castle at a time that's
not two thirty in the morning.
Speaker 8 (53:42):
It's because it's the only place that will show the
IU game.
Speaker 3 (53:47):
Very good, It's an fan.
Speaker 9 (53:53):
Destination, very very good.
Speaker 3 (53:55):
I'm going to get Tevin, thank you.
Speaker 2 (53:57):
I'm going to guess there are better places for able
to watch the game where he can be surrounded by
uh IU fan.
Speaker 3 (54:05):
I don't know. I know where iubar is. Oh No.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Twenty one after for I'm gonna like do the research
for Phil during the uh during the break. Five point
three seven four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station Cincinnatis.
Speaker 12 (54:21):
eSPI brought to you in part by modern office methods.
On the official home of the Bengals Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (54:30):
So i've I'm now on a bit of a quest
for our guy, Phil, who wants helped is an IU fan.
He's looking for a place to watch the game. He
doesn't want to be just surrounded by Ohio State fans. UH.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
And so I found my IU dot.
Speaker 2 (54:49):
Org, which is the uh is the official website for
the Indiana University Alumni Association. And then I clicked on
events and there are there are Indiana watch parties all
across the country. There's one in Northeast Indiana. There's one
in Pittsburgh. There's one in Houston. There's one in Nashville.
(55:11):
There's one in Washington, DC. There's one in South Bend.
There's one in Minneapolis. There's one in Central Carolina. There's
one in Evansville. There's one in Las Vegas. There's one
in Atlanta. There's one in Saint Louis. There's one in Dallas.
There's one in South Florida. There's one in Los Angeles.
There's one in Knoxville. There's one in Tampa Bay. These
are all Indiana versus Ohio State watch parties, like literally
(55:33):
across the country. Every single time zone. But there's none
listed in Cincinnati, Indiana to Bloomington's. I mean, it's not
the easiest place to get to. You can get there
in what about an hour and a half? Two hours?
Is there indian Ohio period. I don't see any list
that in Ohio. Wow, there are none. I mean I don't.
(55:56):
I don't see any list that in Indianapolis. So but
I kept digging here, so I found the Like, I
clicked on you could find the Greater Cincinnati chapter, and
I found it. It's got the name the president here.
I'm not gonna say his name, but you could click
(56:17):
on now see now I'm on Indiana hasn't updated It's
Cincinnati Alumni chapter. Uh Twitter feed since October twenty first. Now,
all right, so I'm kind of doing this in real time,
so really quick. So I found join us in Greater Cincinnati.
(56:37):
This is the Cincinnati chapter of the Indiana Alumni Association,
and it has the name of the guy who's the president.
I'll say his name is Daniel Malone, class of O
nine from you, and it's it's got his it's got
an email here. It's I don't think it's his, it's
not his personal email, but then there are these little links,
you know, like there's a Facebook f there's the thing
(56:59):
for LinkedIn. I'm a big LinkedIn guy. There's the thing
for Instagram. So I click on X. Now it says
here that the Cincinnati chapter of the Indiana University Alumni
Association they had a watch party for the Michigan game,
which was just a couple of weeks ago at Braxton
in Covington, which is a great place. So prior to that,
(57:23):
they had a watch party for their game against Northwestern
at Sounder Brewing, also a great place. They also had
a wine tasting, which is of no interest to me.
So it looks like the Alumni Association kind of bounces around.
Speaker 3 (57:41):
So in my.
Speaker 2 (57:44):
Brief period of industriousness, for our listener Phil and for
other IU fans, I then clicked on the Facebook group
i u AA Greater Cincinnati and somebody come in here yesterday,
where is the Indiana watch party this weekend? And somebody responded,
(58:08):
there is no official watch party planned by the IUAA
board for this game because they're in enemy territory, but
feel free to use the chat or group for any meetups.
So it looks like there's nothing official. It looks like
there's nothing official being planned. By the way, I think
Phil should send us something Taran for doing this work
(58:30):
for him. There's nothing official planned by the Indiana University
Alumni Association because I guess they're playing Ohio State and
they're in Ohio. It is cowardly be better Hoosiers, But
that doesn't preclude you know, let's say an IU fan
for saying, all right, I'm gonna take the bull by
(58:51):
the horns and I'm gonna go ahead, and we're going
to organize something, and we're gonna all meet.
Speaker 3 (58:58):
At this place.
Speaker 2 (58:59):
And even if that doesn't preclude Ohio State fans from
being in the same establishment, they'll at least, you know,
have numbers on their side. I might suggest the Holy
Grail my my spot right. I watched an IU Kentucky
NCAA tournament game. I you beat him in the round
(59:22):
of thirty two a few years ago, and there were
a lot of Indiana fans there because they all wear
those basketball pants with the ugly stripes. That's a fun
Atmospherebody got along. So Phil, I'm trying to help, but
I haven't seen any official gatherings by the alumni Association,
and I don't know of any place that has declared
(59:44):
itself an official IEU and like I can understand a bar,
you know, is it gonna maybe want to say in Ohio, Hey,
we're the EU place.
Speaker 3 (59:53):
I mean, I you know, when they're playing Ohio State.
But Phil, I am trying. I'm trying. Uh, what was
I gonna do next?
Speaker 10 (01:00:02):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
I have to play the Chris of Alca Audio. I
am really excited. I am really excited for you if
you're a Reds fan, because I'm excited for me as
a Reds fan. We'll get to that next. ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 12 (01:00:16):
Excuse Football in the Natti on the official home of
the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (01:00:25):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from the UC Healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
I Uh, Terry, you are everything, good man.
Speaker 5 (01:00:46):
I'm wonderful.
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
I feel like I should be standing against a wall
watching everybody makeout while they dance. Sports headlines are a
service of a Kelsey Chevrol Home of Lifetime powertrain detection
and guarantee credit approval from their family to yours for
life kelseyshev dot Com. Your sports headlines Tonight, Xavier is
(01:01:13):
playing Sienna. That game is at six thirty and you
could listen to it on a seven hundred WLW. There
you go.
Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
That's not all. That's not all.
Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
We do have a Scott Saderfield radio show at Airzon
ESPN fifteen thirty at eight o'clock. There is no Bengals
Game plan show tonight because of the bye week. There
is no real Bengals news because of the.
Speaker 5 (01:01:42):
Bye You're hosting Scotch Jeff Scotch show.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
Right, I am hosting the Scott Sadderfield Radio Show tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:01:47):
Yes, even more Reathan Tounia, even.
Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
More reason Yes, or better yet?
Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
Come on out to the original Montgomery Ina need some ribs?
Speaker 5 (01:01:54):
Can anybody go? Or like you got to be part
of UC alumni or something to go?
Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
Anybody can go to the original Monk Camry Inn.
Speaker 5 (01:02:01):
I didn't know doing the show though.
Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
Oh no, man, it's just show up, get some ribs,
get a pork chop, get a cold beer, hang out,
talk to the coach, talk to me if you want.
Speaker 3 (01:02:13):
I'm sure why you would want to do that.
Speaker 10 (01:02:16):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Chris valaka Chris Vlake is the new Red's hitting coach,
Taran did you know that I caught Chris Valaka's first
ever major league home run.
Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
Yeah, that's right. Uh, Chris Valaika is uh the hitting coach.
I wonder what he did with the ball that I
returned to him.
Speaker 5 (01:02:35):
I don't know now I want to give him. Wanted
to find out.
Speaker 2 (01:02:38):
Let's get him on the show to see if he
has the ball that I I You know that I
got back to him in exchange for no I asked
for nothing in return, because I'm that kind of guy.
Chris Vlake is the new Reds hitting coach. He was
on the Reds Hot Stove League Show last night. Here
he is talking about cutting down strikeouts and Ellie Dela Cruz.
Speaker 5 (01:03:00):
You know, I think it goes back to to the
education piece. It's it's not about the strike three. You know,
these pictures are really good. They drive nice cars too,
you know, So.
Speaker 13 (01:03:09):
It's not getting to those two or figuring out how
we're getting to those those two straightcounts.
Speaker 10 (01:03:15):
You know.
Speaker 13 (01:03:15):
Is it, like I said, is it chase early? Is
it missing something in zone early in the count? You know,
especially for Ellie, you know, if he if he can
shrink his zone and forced pitchers into the zone, that's
where the damage is going to come from. But if
he's not disciplined enough and follows them around, you know,
they can they can almost try to walk him. And
if he's going to get himself out, you know, that's
(01:03:35):
that's something that other teams game plan against. So I
think the more we can focus on him, you know,
shrinking his zones, educating him around, you know, with him walking,
with how how he runs the bases, you know, that
creates pressure and you know teams aren't gonna want to
walk him. You know, that turns into a double, a triple,
you know, and two pitches say, so, how do we
how do we shrink his go zone? How do we
(01:03:56):
shrink you know, his swing rates to to what he
can hand, you know, and and force those other teams
to make pitches or make mistakes in the zone that
he does special things with.
Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Chris Valleka on the Reds Hot Stove League Show last
night on seven hundred WLW, Fox Sports thirteen sixty and
the Reds Radio Network. La Dela Cruz is an awesome talent.
We all know this, and we've talked about, like, you know,
rounding out his game and getting rid of some of
the base running issues and getting him to be better
(01:04:27):
in the field and making the routine plays look more routine,
and then you know, supplementing that with the insane stuff
that he does covering ground on you know, short pop
ups to the outfield, and you know, he's done some
insane things. Right, twenty five homers and sixty seven stolen
bases historically great numbers. He is must watch. He has
(01:04:48):
an abundance of talent. He struck out two hundred and
eighteen times last season, and even in this day and
age where strikeouts are not round upon as much as
they used to be, and even really, really really good
hitters are striking out well above one hundred times, two
hundred eighteen times is way too many. That's you know,
(01:05:11):
he had just under seven hundred plate appearances last year,
so that's what roughly a quarter of them, less than
a quarter of them where he has no chance to
do anything with his legs because he's not on base.
(01:05:31):
Is that's thirty thirty one percent of his plate appearances
last year he's struck out, So thirty one percent of
the time he can't make the defense make a play.
He can't make that. We've seen Ellie hit balls into
the infield that turn into hits, and in some cases,
(01:05:52):
you know, two bases because the fielder has to rush
and the fielder makes a bad throw and then what
would be a ground ball out for someone else turned
into you know, the guys on second base. He can't
steal a bag, he can't make the defense make a play.
If he's never on base, he's never going to be
one of these do He's not gonna be Tony Gwynn. Right,
He's not gonna be a guy that never strikes out.
(01:06:14):
He's got a big swing. He swings for power, and
he plays in a day and age where strikeouts, again,
they're not as frowned upon as they used to be.
But if we're if he's really going to maximize his talents,
and part of his talent is putting pressure on defenses,
he can't strike out thirty percent of the time that
(01:06:34):
he's at the plate. He can't lead the league in strikeouts.
So I mean, yeah, you know, there's a lot of
unfair criticism aimed at Elie Dela Cruz. This is an
unfair criticism. There has to be an improvement just in
the amount of time he puts the bat on the
ball in the amount of time that he is forcing
(01:06:56):
the defense to do something that it doesn't want to
have to do.
Speaker 3 (01:07:00):
Happen.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
If he is striking out as much, he's also going
to be a better two strike hitter. And there were
times last year where watching him, it felt like, I
don't want to say that he didn't have a plan,
but I thought like, especially early in the season, he
was almost compensating too much for the criticism that he
wasn't selective enough, and he was taking really good pitches
(01:07:21):
to hit and falling behind OH two and it's really
hard to hit O two. But then there were a
lot of times where he was O two and it
felt like, you know, he might as well just start
walking back to the dugout because he's he's going to
strike out.
Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
It's got to be a better two strike hitter.
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
He's also got to do a better job of maybe
swinging at some pitches earlier in account so he doesn't
fall behind OH two because he's not a good two
strike hitter, if that makes sense. But just as a
general rule, I can't I can't maximize. He can't maximize
his talent if he's not putting the ball in play.
(01:08:01):
Thirty one percent of the time. That's not gonna work
my work for other guys like Ellie's game, he's going
to hit for power.
Speaker 3 (01:08:08):
We understand it.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
We're not talking about someone whose game is solely based
on hitting the ball over the wall. He's a guy's
his game and his his What makes him lethal is
he can force the defense to do things that other
guys can't. He can't do that if he is striking
out as often as he has. Fourteen away from excuse me,
(01:08:31):
five o'clock. I mentioned this very briefly. We had our
guy Maury Brown from Forbes on with us last week,
so I'm reading today Nick Martinez accepts his qualifying offers.
So the redsire going to have to pay him like
twenty and a half million dollars and then look like
get beyond that. Nick Martinez on your team is good,
Like he was good last year. He was a savior
in many respects. When he had to start, he started well.
(01:08:54):
When he came out of the bullpen, he was fine.
Like when things kind of went down the way they
did with the starting staff, imagine life without Nick Martinez.
It's impossible to comprehend what that would have looked like,
so forget the money for a second. Nick Martinez is
on your team this coming season, and you could you
don't really have to define his role in November.
Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
That's good. That's a good thing.
Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Like had Nick Martinez gone somewhere else, you were gonna
have to find somebody else in that role, and probably
somebody not as good as Nick Martinez. I was reading
the piece in the Inquiry today about Nick Martinez and
what Nick Crawl has had to say, and with Nick Martinez,
there are questions about, Okay, well, how much of how
much of the budget, the off season budget for acquiring
(01:09:38):
players is Nick Martinez gonna eat up? And then when
there are questions about the budget and payroll, the conversation
shifts toward some of the uncertainty about shrinking revenues because
of the new TV deal. And I'm not going to
deny that that's a bit of an issue. Here's what
(01:09:58):
I like most about this. Mary Brown brought this up,
and I've thought about it a lot. If you're a
Reds fan, you have a little bit more power, you know,
as things stand right now, I have a television provider
that I use for the most part because it has
had now fan Duel Sports. It's had Bally Sports and
(01:10:21):
prior to that, Fox Sports. In the absence of that,
I'll be honest with you, I don't know that I'm
going to move forward with my TV provider, especially because
they've taken some channels away. That's a conversation my wife
and I will have. But the new TV deal is
going to be have a direct to consumer option ala
carte or you decide I'm going to subscribe to this
(01:10:42):
option and watch the Reds games. But if the team
is no good, you could go screw it. I'm not
paying for this and you get rid of it. When
you're watching the games on a cable bundle, you're watching
the game with a provider that, yeah, you get Bally Sports,
(01:11:02):
but you also are getting seventy other TV channels. It's
a little bit more difficult to well, you know, you know,
it's maybe a little bit less willing to bail on
a service that has all the other TV channels. I
like this.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
I like anything that.
Speaker 2 (01:11:14):
Empowers fans, so I subscribe to this. The team is
no good, I don't know what it's gonna cost per month.
You know what I'm not getting what I'm not getting
out of this what I'm looking for. See you like
it's it's a way. And I'm not just saying this
about the Reds. I think this is going to apply
to a lot of cities that are gonna have this
(01:11:36):
option for getting their games direct to consumers. Teams no good,
I bail. Now you may not bail. I probably wouldn't pail.
I like watching a Reds, need to watch a Reds.
But I like anything that empowers fans a little bit.
This kind of does that. It's a good thing. Eleve
(01:11:56):
it away from five o'clock five point three, seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. We haven't talked about the Bearcats Nebraska game,
likely I guess being moved to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
I'm disappointed by it, but I get it, and I
think you need to get it moving forward if you're
a college sports fan, not just a Bearcat fan. We'll
get to that. Richard Skinner's gonna join us coming up
at five twenty, and the eternal quest for a place
(01:12:20):
for our guy Phil to watch the IU Ohio stake.
I've gotten a suggestion for a place in Lawrenceburg that
I would suggest he not go because.
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
It's not the kind of place you want to be
at noon.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
Just put it that way. It's a ten away from
five o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Don't believe anybody got cut today, right, that's to my knowledge,
don't one, no one.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
I said at Bulwagger on X.
Speaker 2 (01:12:49):
Thanks to our friends at Delta Dental building healthy, smart, vibrant.
Excuse me, communities for all. Go to Delta denteal oh
wit dot com. By the way, I'm off tomorrow. Chad
Brendle will be filling in. There's another programming note. Not
only is there no Bengals game plan tonight, there's no
Bengals pep rally on Friday. So this show will be on.
(01:13:13):
I just won't be hosting it. Tomorrow is an off day.
Friday is a travel day. But anyways, Chad will fill
in on that day too, so you get double doses
of Chad Breundle. And judging by some of the things
I see on X right now, there could be some
things worth talking with Chad about.
Speaker 5 (01:13:31):
And plan accordingly. Because we're at a five thirty on
Friday because the UK basketball.
Speaker 3 (01:13:35):
Oh yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (01:13:36):
So as you're planning your Friday around a sports talk
radio show. And I know that's what a lot of
people do, and they start to think about, all right,
like the weekend's gonna start, let's let's map it around.
You know the sports talk radio show that I like.
Remember it's an early exit Friday five thirty, show's over.
So just keep that in mind. You could listen to
Chad on Friday and then at five thirty, thirty minutes
(01:13:58):
before you typically start your weekend. We have a shot,
by the way Tarran next weekend or next week on Wednesday.
I noticed this NKU plays like a one o'clock game,
and we're on after, so we're gonna be out of
like three thirty next Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (01:14:13):
Plan your life accordingly.
Speaker 5 (01:14:16):
Well, that just means I'll finish up the NK, you
broadcast it, then go to you.
Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
Oh that's right. Well, uh, let it be. It's rare
that we are on after a live sporting event. But
as I saw on the calendar, that is the case.
Speaker 5 (01:14:28):
Next one is that Rick Rick stay too.
Speaker 2 (01:14:31):
Yeah, so maybe just Rick, We'll just I'm sure they're
in an MT I have no idea where they are.
Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
Might just make Rick stay on the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
That's gonna be like a that's a Wednesday, the Bengals
be back at work. We'll start talking Steelers, convincing ourselves
the Bengals can jump back into contention.
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):
Which is coming. I mean, I know how this works.
It's coming.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
Five point three thirty is our phone number, Richard Skinner
with the last time we called her Skinny on a
bye he had no idea we were calling in. I
think we called him he was at Texas Roadhouse. We'll
see if something similar happens. Coming up at five twenty
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
It's time for the bud Light five o'clock Happy Hour
on ESPN fifteen thirty. It is a service of quidline
to go for one of those right now. A bud
light and a nap. That's what I need, very good.
(01:16:12):
Richard Skinner's gonna join us in uh just about fifteen minutes,
and we are looking forward to that. We've got some
more UC stuff to get to a little bit later
on No Bengals game Plan. We are done at six,
and then ESPN Radio takes over. You'll have that, you'll
have the with the final hour of Freddy and Harry.
Speaker 3 (01:16:31):
So there you go. No Bengals game Plan.
Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
Because of the bye, we are not supposed to begin
the hour by taking phone calls. But I've never been
one for rules, so let's go ahead. It Hill, it
says your name's Hill Hill calling from Kentucky. You're on
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 15 (01:16:47):
High We how you doing, Bud.
Speaker 10 (01:16:50):
It's been a while.
Speaker 15 (01:16:51):
Haven't talked you in probably five or six years.
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
Where you've been.
Speaker 15 (01:16:53):
I called, I've been. I've been doing well. I still
love your show. I called earlier and talked to Austin
and Tone about mel Kiper's comments that he had on
Unsportsman Mike with Chris Canty, and he was very high
praising Mike Brown. And I know a lot of people
hate Mike Brown, but he was high praising Mike Brown
(01:17:13):
and Duke Tobin and how they go about the draft
process and getting draft prospects. And I just wanted to
get your thoughts on that. Sorry, my son's in the background.
Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
Well, I mean, is it the draft process or is
it the draft results.
Speaker 15 (01:17:28):
He was actually more along the lines of the pickups
like Andy Dalton, AJ Green. I mean, obviously you're big hitters,
but I was. I was actually shocked because you know,
Mike Brown gets this stigma that he's so cheap, and
I don't think that's the fact. I think he has
a lot of inherited wealth and I think he can
afford to pay whatever it is he wants to pay.
He's just a very you know, successful businessman.
Speaker 3 (01:17:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
Well, I mean, I I think if you're going to
make arguments on behalf of the Bengals and the first
people you point to our drafting AJ Green and Andy
Dalton's that's not going to bolster the case because it
was thirteen years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:18:03):
I don't think the Bengals are cheap. I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
I don't. I think if you look at the last
twenty years or so, you will see many instances where
they have paid their absolute best players who play the
positions they value the most. There have been times AJ
Green for about five minutes, was the highest paid wide
receiver in the sport. They once gave Bobby Hard an
(01:18:27):
eight hundred percent raise even though he was terrible. That's
not what a cheap team does. Geno Atkins, for a
brief while, was the highest paid player at his position.
DJ Reider signed the most lucrative contract for a nose
tackle in the history of the league. I mean, I
could keep going, and so I don't know that they're cheap.
I was listening to a sports talk radio conversation last
(01:18:51):
night where the decision to not bring back Jesse Bates
and not bring back Joe Mixon and not bring back
DJ was attributed to frugality. And they screwed up because
they're cheap. No, they screwed up because they didn't find
better replacements or suitable replacements, or less expensive replacements. That's
not being cheap, it's being strategic, but failing with the strategy.
(01:19:14):
And so I always kind of bristle. I don't think
they're cheap when it comes to their roster. Might they
be cheap in other areas how they run their business?
Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:19:22):
Maybe, And maybe that's reflected by the size of the
scouting staff. All of that said, Look, there there might
be something to like about their draft process, but the
reality is the recent draft results aren't great.
Speaker 15 (01:19:36):
Pardon sonus of horrendous and what real quick before I
jump off here, whatever happened with Geno Atkins. It's kind
of like you just kind of went away and I
never can really kind of find out what happened there.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
Uh, the Bengals moved on from them, and then subsequently
so did the rest of the NFL. All right, thank you, mo,
thank you. The very last that I heard was in
twenty twenty one. I think he was close to signing
with Seattle during the season, and he's been out of
the league. Twenty was his last year. So Geno Atkins
(01:20:14):
is thirty six, thirty seven. He is retired, but I mean, like,
if you look at the last four or five years,
I'm willing to bet we could look this up. Most
of the time after the draft, they've gotten good grades
from people like mel Kiper, and that reflects process, and
(01:20:36):
that reflects, you know, finding players who seem to fit needs.
It obviously reflects college production from the player, but the
results haven't been great. Like, you know, Jamar Chase is
all world, right, Jamar Chase, if assuming he plays the
(01:20:58):
majority of his career here, going to go down as
the greatest wide receiver in franchise history, which is not
insignificant because the Bengals have had a lot of really
good wide receivers. But now that Evan McPherson's not reliable,
that draft stinks. Jackson Carmen, Joseph Osi, Cam Sample not
a good draft. The twenty twenty two draft. Now you
(01:21:20):
might say the jury is still out on daxx Hill,
But okay, we're gonna go into year four wondering like,
what's Dax's role gonna be and how good is he
gonna be? Cam Taylor Britt has had his moments. How
do we feel about Cam Taylor Britt now, Cordell Vohlsen
has been a starting guard. Has he been good? I
(01:21:47):
would find it way unfair to start grading the twenty
four draft.
Speaker 3 (01:21:53):
I am about the twenty three draft. What has Miles.
Speaker 2 (01:21:58):
Murphy done so far in his career? Jordan Battle Now,
I think Chase Brown has proven to be useful. I
love how he played on Sunday and DJ Turner. You
feel for him because, well it kind of felt like
Sunday night he was starting to really turn the corner
and then unfortunately he suffers a broken classical Beyond though
(01:22:20):
the obvious drafting Joe Burrow and maybe taking Jamar Chase
wasn't obvious, there haven't been that many successes.
Speaker 16 (01:22:30):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:22:30):
The twenty draft did yield Tea T's obviously been a
terrific player.
Speaker 3 (01:22:35):
Logan Wilson has been a good player, but.
Speaker 2 (01:22:39):
You know where they've had to fill holes left by
players who were part of that team in twenty one
has been mainly in the draft and it hasn't worked.
And then you add to it that compounds some of
the swings and missus in free agency, like Geno Stone.
(01:23:03):
Gino Stone, you have to go get him because your
original plan at safety didn't work. And then when Geno
Stone doesn't work. Oh BOYD blows up in your face,
and you're left going into an offseason wondering what are
we gonna do with safety? The cheapness thing when it
comes to when it comes to the roster itself, Look,
not everybody's gonna get paid. I don't think Jesse Bates
(01:23:23):
didn't get paid because the Bengals are cheap. I think
Jesse Bates didn't get paid because the Bengals just don't
value that position. Now, I would then argue, well how
about you value the position a little bit more? But
I don't think that was being cheap. I don't think
they've screwed up this Jamar Chase thing because they're cheap.
(01:23:45):
I think they have a way of doing things that,
to a degree, is based on some logic that I
believe they should have deviated from. And now they're gonna
have to pay him even more. Chadrendle Bearcatjournal dot Com.
Hi Chad, I'm up.
Speaker 16 (01:24:02):
I wanted to make a prediction on your airwaves. Okay,
Cincinnati will land five star wing Sean Abev out of
overtime Elite in Florida.
Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
Holy crap?
Speaker 11 (01:24:15):
Really yeah, I thought, how can I I was gonna
wait until after the show, and then I was like,
I want a surprise mo Ammy air with this one.
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
Uh, it's rare that you catch me on the air speechless.
Speaker 3 (01:24:34):
You just caught me speechless.
Speaker 4 (01:24:36):
He is.
Speaker 16 (01:24:37):
Uh, you want to guess how many points per game
he's averaging right now at overtime elite for his senior season,
thirty one, shooting thirty eight percent from three while adding
almost seven rebounds and five assists.
Speaker 2 (01:24:55):
So, last I saw it was Cincinnati and Auburn.
Speaker 3 (01:24:59):
Was there another.
Speaker 16 (01:25:01):
Arizona state probably from what I heard, had the biggest
nil offer, But yeah, I think those three would be
the main three, and people thought Auburn was the team
to be for quite some time.
Speaker 3 (01:25:20):
Give me more.
Speaker 16 (01:25:21):
This is what we would call a Chad Dollars special.
So I mean, when you're looking at you know what
they're probably going to have to replace next year. And
one of the things I had heard on Abev in
his recruitment that he was going to pay very close
attention to these teams playing over the first couple of
(01:25:43):
weeks of the season as he was trending towards the decision.
Speaker 9 (01:25:47):
He's six foot eight.
Speaker 16 (01:25:49):
He plays the three, and if you're six foot eight
and you play the three. I would guess you've been
pretty impressed with how you see has been using Sima's
Lucotis this season. That would that would seem like something
that would would have an impact in a recruitment.
Speaker 2 (01:26:06):
Sean you know, Sean Aida.
Speaker 16 (01:26:11):
S h O n ad a Ev.
Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
It's a weird spelling class of.
Speaker 16 (01:26:17):
Think their families originally from Russia.
Speaker 3 (01:26:20):
A class of.
Speaker 16 (01:26:22):
Yes composite five star. He's the number I think on
the twenty four to seven composite. He's the number twenty
four player in the country. And he would pair with
Keyshawn Tillery. You'd have a top twenty five wing and
a top fifty point guard in this class for West
Miller in the early signing period, and I think we
(01:26:44):
all know, like this is going to be a very
important class for Wes. You're losing a couple of guys
that you know for sure, Simos being one of them,
Connor Hickman. You know, there's a couple of guys that
will have a decision to make, but you kind of
it respect that if they're as good as we think
they're going to be this year, like some of those
guys will probably uh, you know, try their hand at
(01:27:08):
the professional ranks or whatever that may be. Uh, so
you're gonna have some some spots to fill on this
roster that you need to fill with really high level talent.
Speaker 4 (01:27:18):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (01:27:19):
This would do it.
Speaker 16 (01:27:20):
This would answer those questions as to, uh to what
they would do on the high school level. And I
think it would also potentially that's a that's a little
far out, but you're gonna be able to put it
in front of guys in the portal. Hey, you know,
we've got we've got some really high level talent coming
in and guys want to go places that have a
(01:27:42):
lot of talent on their roster. And uh, did you
there was something that came out yesterday. I didn't know
if you saw this or not.
Speaker 11 (01:27:49):
Mo.
Speaker 16 (01:27:50):
Uh. The only two schools with more Top one hundred
players on their roster this year in college basketball Duke
in Connecticut.
Speaker 9 (01:28:00):
Wow.
Speaker 16 (01:28:01):
Duke has nine, Connecticut has eight. Cincinnati has seven Top
one hundred players on their rosters.
Speaker 9 (01:28:08):
So Wess is doing an.
Speaker 16 (01:28:10):
Incredible job at roster development, and Sean Abev would be
the next step in that process.
Speaker 2 (01:28:15):
I'm watching Sean abev highlights as we speak, and I'm.
Speaker 16 (01:28:22):
You're probably going to be doing that for most of
the rest of the night. Well, he is watching his highlights.
Is a kind of a dictate.
Speaker 2 (01:28:29):
Yeah, yes, that's you. You've made my Wednesday night. Thank
you very much. This has been awesome. This has been
the best phone call I've gotten in a while.
Speaker 16 (01:28:38):
All Right, now, have a good show, Abe, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:28:41):
That's awesome. Terrific news. Chad Brenda more on that. Chared
Brendl's website is Bearcat Journal dot com.
Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
Richard Skinner next.
Speaker 12 (01:28:55):
And boy Skyline Schley on the official home of the Bengals,
Cincinnati ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:29:02):
We once called Richard Skinner for his weekly hit with
us during the bye week. He was sitting at Texas Roadhouse.
I don't think he's at Texas Roadhouse. I'm told he's
at basketball practice. How's practice going?
Speaker 9 (01:29:15):
He kids a light when today we had a scrimmage
game last night. We're just going through some girl stuff.
I'm gonna watch some film. So there we go.
Speaker 3 (01:29:21):
How's that film session?
Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
Gonna go?
Speaker 9 (01:29:25):
Okay on the defensive end, not so okay on the
offensive end.
Speaker 3 (01:29:28):
Sort of the opposite of the Bengals.
Speaker 9 (01:29:30):
That's correct. They are so bad defensively. And that's the
thing though, I mean, that's the sixty four thousand dollars
question is how do they get better? And I don't
know how they do. I just don't. I think they
get better because the competition are about to face. They
got some pedestrian offenses are gonna play against, but they
(01:29:51):
don't rush the pass or other than Trey Hendrickson, They've
gotten I will sink gotten better stopping the run. I
think we can all agree with that. I know JK.
Robbins had the touchdown run for the game winner, but
for the most part they've done better than there. But man,
the chunk plays that the Chargers got the other night
in the first half, eight plays of twenty yards or more,
that's absurd.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
Is lou An Arumo coaching for his job in the
final six games.
Speaker 9 (01:30:14):
I'm gonna say yes to that, because if they have success,
it's because the defense has gotten better, and they'll probably
win a bunch of games and maybe even make a
playoff push. If they don't win games, it's because of
the defense, in my opinion, not getting any better, not
doing well against pedestrian offenses, and at that point, right
(01:30:35):
or wrong, somebody will be the sacrificial lamp. I don't
people are talking Zach Taylor. I don't see that even
beaning in the conversation. But usually that means a minimum,
it's a coordinator, it's a position coach or too so yes,
and I sear that fully saying that. As much as
people want to pin the defensive issues on lou Anarumo,
I pin them way above him to the people that
(01:30:56):
have drafted and selected players for this defense. Because can tail.
But it's a second round pick not playing like it.
DJ Turner was a second round pick, played okay the
other night, but hasn't really played like him. You know,
your off season signing, your Sheldon Rankins has been a
bus to this point. And the rookie defensive tackles there
are rookies, give them a pass, but that hasn't worked
out all that great. Miles Murphy is is non existing
(01:31:18):
almost as a former first round draft pick. So you
tell me what as much again, there's always a there's
always a fall guy, and that's just the way the
ball bounces. But you tell me what he's supposed to
do with that collection.
Speaker 3 (01:31:28):
Count very fair.
Speaker 2 (01:31:31):
I guess the thing that gives me pause is it's
it's not like the Bengals are going to go do
what they did when they last had a good defense
and throw a whole bunch of obscene dollars at it
and land Trey Hendrickson should obe wuse Von Bell, etcetera.
Speaker 9 (01:31:45):
No, that's right, and that's why you have to hit
on these draft picks. If you're going to pay your
quarterback and you're going to eventually pay your number one
wide receiver, and you're paying Trey Hendrickson, you're paying Orlando Brown,
you have to start hitting on some of these draft picks.
And they simply have it for the most part. Again,
two second round corners. You remade your safety room that
hasn't worked out. It's an aging von Bell and g
(01:32:06):
you know Stone hasn't played very well. You know you're
probably not gonna have Mike Kildo on this roster next year,
so you need to find a slot cornerback. Again. I'm
gonna give the rookies a bit of a pass the
rookie tackles just because of their rookies, but you need
them to hit.
Speaker 16 (01:32:19):
You need them to be.
Speaker 9 (01:32:20):
Really good next year. You need somebody to play that
end spot next year. You know, you're hoping it's Miles Murphy,
but he can't play over Joseph Oside at the moment,
who probably won't be on this roster next year. So
there's a lot of holes on that tide of the football.
Speaker 2 (01:32:34):
Is Evan McPherson kicking to keep the Bengals from bringing
in a competent bringing in competition next next summer.
Speaker 9 (01:32:43):
I don't think so. But that being said, at some
point you need to make I mean, you know, we
talked to Evan a couple of weeks ago. He talked
about how he's hitting the ball well. Darren Simmons talked
about how he's hit it great in pregame warm up
and he needs to carry it over well. He hasn't
carried it over. At some point that does become a
mental thing. And if it's a mental thing, I mean,
(01:33:03):
he's not hitting it poorly, right, It's not like he's
coming up short from forty seven yards. He's pulling everything
at the moment that feels fixable, but you got to
go fix it. And if it can't be fixed, then
at some point he got something to make kicks. And
maybe that's the case. If discontinues, I don't think it does.
I think it's I think it's temporary. And I say
that fully knowing that it hasn't been temporary when it
(01:33:24):
feels like it's been every game And if you're literally
holding your breath even when he kicks an extra point?
Is he gonna make? And that shouldn't be that way?
And I'm guessing that plays on his mind too.
Speaker 2 (01:33:33):
Uh, could I know? I think we talked about this
last week. Joe Burrow's taking a bunch of different hits
and the interior of the offensive line has been not good.
Speaker 3 (01:33:44):
You know, we wonder like what can they do on defense?
Is is it as as helpless and hopeless on the
offensive line?
Speaker 9 (01:33:54):
Some of that, I will say, I mean, Joe does
hold the ball a little bit long at times, so
some of those are on him, but some of it
is on guard to guard issues there. They did some
interesting things the other night where they were pulling Alex
Kappa at times. They did some different blocking scheme stuff
in pass protection that actually started to work. And maybe
that's that's the thing, is you just don't straight up,
(01:34:16):
you know, trying to block the guy across from you
and and handle their stunts and twists or whatever. With that,
maybe you try to do some different things because you know,
there's been times where Alex Kapp has just been bullied,
Ted Terrice has just been bullied. You know, Ted got
caught for a hold the other night, and and it
was it was a terrible hold.
Speaker 10 (01:34:32):
I mean, it.
Speaker 9 (01:34:32):
Happens, but it was a terrible hold. It's almost out
of desperation. And to that point, Mo again, we're talking
about finding ways to fix the defense, and some of
this is gonna have to come through free agency. But
you know, guard to guard, are you gonna start seventh
round pick Mattlee at center next year? Are you really?
I don't think you are. And so you're gonna have
to throw some money at the interior offensive line in
(01:34:54):
all likelihood, and that's where this this gets really dicey
at some point. I mean really, at this point right now,
Jackson Carmen, where he was drafted, should be a starting
lineman on this team, probably guard, that's where they moved
him to.
Speaker 2 (01:35:06):
And he's not.
Speaker 9 (01:35:07):
He's not even on the roster. And that that becomes
a problem when it starts stacking up class after class
after class, and who do you point the finger of Blaynott?
You have to point it at Duke Tobin, and I
don't think unfortunately, it doesn't get pointed in his direction,
at least from from management. Doesn't seem like.
Speaker 2 (01:35:22):
What's your favorite basketball practice drill?
Speaker 9 (01:35:27):
I'm a big Oklahoma drill guy. The Oklahoma drills don't
like football. It's a it's kind of you have five
guys stand across mid court, and then you have guys
put the ball off the backboard and at some point
you yell rip it, and then the two outside guys
have to run and touch. So you start off with
a kind of a fast break drill. It's a five
turns into like a five on three.
Speaker 2 (01:35:45):
You hope to get a quick bucket.
Speaker 9 (01:35:46):
If not, the two guys who run in touch the
line come back and play defense. It's a good conditioning drill,
it's good defensive drill, and it's a really good offensive drill.
My favorite.
Speaker 2 (01:35:53):
I'll keep that in mind. Thank you as always. Yeah,
man good rich sinner from a local twelve myself, I
like the three man we've I like three on two,
two on one, I like six on five.
Speaker 3 (01:36:08):
I like three on three close out.
Speaker 2 (01:36:13):
Are you getting a coaching mom, No, I'm just ye
thinking thinking back to when I was a terrible high
school basketball player.
Speaker 5 (01:36:19):
Something's happened at the Agger household.
Speaker 2 (01:36:21):
Uh my daughter loves you know, we got a we
got a driveway.
Speaker 3 (01:36:25):
Who she likes, the she likes, she likes to play.
Speaker 2 (01:36:29):
Uh maybe I don't know I would be a good
like part time assistant. Like when it comes to youth sports.
I mean, we're we're just we're just we're just now
getting there. Second grade soccer was you know, they're they're
starting to be a little separation.
Speaker 3 (01:36:50):
But I I get this sense.
Speaker 2 (01:36:51):
Next year is going to be my first real encounter
with angry youth sport parent.
Speaker 3 (01:36:56):
We have not had that yet.
Speaker 2 (01:36:58):
Uh. I I don't know that I am equipped to
be the coach if we have angry youth sport parent.
Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
I don't know. I don't know that I would do well.
I really do, man.
Speaker 2 (01:37:12):
I tip my hat so to speak to people who
coach kids who deal in some cases with angry youth
sport parent. I could not.
Speaker 3 (01:37:22):
I could not and will not.
Speaker 2 (01:37:24):
And so my daughter likes basketball and she likes soccer,
and she wants to keep playing them and you know,
second grade. But like in two years, maybe next year
when we get like overly competitive, overly angry youth sport
parent I don't know. I'm not going to enjoy that.
I'm gonna be completely honest with you, I'm not going
(01:37:46):
to enjoy that at all. And I'm not going to
be angry youth sport parenting. Twenty seven away from six o'clock.

Forest on Saturday afternoon. On top of that, the area
beyond the Musketeers, my beloved Dayton Flyers hosting New Mexico State.
That game tips off at seven o'clock. I think that
would be it for your local sports headlines. My producer,
Tarren Bland just said to me during the break, you
(01:39:15):
want some Terry Francona. And right now who says no
to that? Here is Terry Francona on MLB Hotstove on
MLB Network.
Speaker 17 (01:39:24):
Let me ask you this too. When you made the
decision to come back and manage the Reds and take
this opportunity, You've done it three times previously where you're
coming from the outside and learning an organization. You want
to learn about the depth and the miners. You want
to learn about the hierarchy in the front office. How
do you approach it now? Having done this a few times,
(01:39:45):
come in to take this manager job? Is it different
for you?
Speaker 1 (01:39:48):
An hour?
Speaker 5 (01:39:48):
Is your process going to be the same as it was.
Speaker 18 (01:39:51):
Well, it's really I mean baseball. Fortunately, baseball's baseball, which
is good. I needed to do a lot of listening
and we're going to have some meetings next weekend since
the four Winter meetings in Dallas where the new staff
gets together, because we don't want newness to ever be
an excuse for us not winning. So if we can
all get on the same page, then it'll be easier
(01:40:12):
to get our players on the same page. So just
trying to get to know everybody's name. Fortunately, the spring
training complex is just about identical to Cleveland, so that's
not an issue. And I know where to go, I
know where to stay. I'm pretty fired up, man. Our
players seem like really good kids that want to get better,
(01:40:35):
and it reminds me a lot of the Cleveland situation
a couple of years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:40:40):
It's Terry Francona on MLB Hot Stove on MLB Network.
The only part of that that I wouldn't enjoy would
be the meetings. I work in radio because we don't
really have meetings. What a job where I don't have
to attend a lot of meetings. I have friends. I
was talking about you. I got three meetings today. That
sounds just beyond miserable. But yes, they're getting familiar with
(01:41:03):
each other and that's that's good.
Speaker 3 (01:41:05):
Who among us?
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
Even before he was named Red's manager, I will I'll
make an admission. So when when he was retiring obviously
proved to be a very short lived retirement, Terry Francona
was a very popular podcast guest to talk about his
career in baseball and the decision to retire. I actively
(01:41:28):
sought out all of them, like there are just certain
people who you could listen to talk about anything, but
in particular something you're really interested in. And this again,
this is when he was retiring as manager of the
Indians or the Guardians.
Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:41:42):
I sought out every particular podcast that had Terry Francona
as a guest, and I listened to all of them,
and all of them were awesome. I like, could listen
to him talk about baseball all day long.
Speaker 3 (01:41:56):
So, uh, there you go, a.
Speaker 2 (01:41:58):
Lot of excitement for the lot of excitement for the
UC basketball season. You know, I started the show by
talking about this, and like, I'd be very clear about this.
I don't I don't get caught up in getting excited
about winning games they're supposed to win. Like to me,
no November. November basketball, though could could often be can
often be kind of rough with The first few games
(01:42:19):
of the season for UC have been for me were
confirmation of the reasons why so many of us were
excited about this team all off season. So it's only
four games, and it's four games against teams they should
be And you know, the NKU game is not a
by game, but it's it's a game against a mid
major opponent, a good mid major opponent.
Speaker 4 (01:42:40):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:42:40):
Wes Miller talked after the game about like these are
games that from a metrics standpoint, you get no credit for,
but still could serve your team a lot of good
And I agree with that. I think there was something
to be gained about playing a team Darren Horn's team
will should be at least in the conversation to win
the Horizon League. It was. It wasn't as hostile, hostile
(01:43:02):
and environment as the game two years ago, quite frankly,
but still it's it's it's visiting territory, it's a road game,
You're playing a good team. You're gonna get some resistance.
You get more out of that game from a basketball
perspective than playing some of the games you played last
week or playing a bye game at home. Unfortunately, you
only get dinged if you lose it. You don't really
get credit for winning it when it comes to you know, metrics,
(01:43:23):
Net ranking, Ken Palm, stuff like that. I think it's
cool that they played, but you know, we came into
the season and spent all summer long so excited about
the team, so excited about the prospects for the season,
getting to the tournament, maybe winning games in the tournament,
and so there's nothing like having your optimism fuel right,
(01:43:47):
There's nothing like having that sense of excitement that has
been you know, it's it's not been based on blindness,
but you haven't seen the team play. You're still trying
to figure out how the pieces fit together. There's a
lot of excitement the way they have played like they
look like they're gonna be a tough out. They look
like they have a lot of different offensive weapons, different
shooters seemous. Lukash's has improved, Aziz van Diego has improved.
(01:44:11):
This team's ball movement is so much better. They could
do a lot of different things offensively. There's no real
talent gap there's nobody who doesn't really look like they
fit in on this level. And if you watch the
Bearcats over the last few years, whether it be in
their last few years in the AAC or a year
one of the Big Twelve last year, you often watch
guys that you thought, I'm not sure that guy's getting
(01:44:33):
minutes on a really good team and a high major.
That's not the case this year. They're not perfect. They
got to get Dan Skillings back. Until they do, their
rebounding is going to be a bit of a disadvantage,
especially on the offensive end. They weren't great defensively last night,
but you see the upside. There's a lot to like.
They look like a Big twelve team more so than
(01:44:54):
last year. They've got multiple point guards, multiple shooters, they
have skilled b Again, they really haven't been tested. I'm
not sure how much George Attack, which has already lost
two games, including one to North Florida on Saturday, is
going to test them. But they they look they look
the part of an NCAA tournament team, and they look
(01:45:14):
the part of a team that in the NCAA tournament
you would say can win games. That could change in
four months. I think we felt that way going into
the season. The way they've played through four games would
do nothing to dissuade you from feeling that way if
you did already. Fourteen away from six o'clock. This is
(01:45:38):
the ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station mean Nick Martinez,
eight away from six o'clock. I want to thank our
friends at Skyline. If you have not tried Skylines new

Wisconsin cheddar.
Speaker 3 (01:46:07):

Speaker 2 (01:46:08):
It's a three way, but it's made with mac and
cheese instead of spaghetti.
Speaker 3 (01:46:11):
It is the ultimate comfort food.
Speaker 2 (01:46:13):
It's perfect for this time of year, like we're gonna
get the first like real blast of winter tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:46:17):
This is perfect winter food.
Speaker 2 (01:46:19):
It's available for a limited time at participating Skyline locations.
Speaker 3 (01:46:23):
They dropped off a bunch.
Speaker 2 (01:46:26):
I've had I've had the mac and cheese three way
a couple of times, but they dropped off a bunch
of them here at the radio station, and I grabbed mine,
and then there were a lot of other folks in
the kitchen asking like, have you had it yet?
Speaker 9 (01:46:37):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (01:46:38):
Like, dude, try it. It's awesome. It is awesome, So
we thank them. If you haven't had a new Mac
and Cheese threeway from Skyline, trust me, trust me what
I say. You owe it to yourself. You owe it
to yourself. I say, what do we have? Bud Light
five o'clock Happy Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty. I mentioned
(01:46:58):
this before I am making tomorrow off. I might sleep
until I might sleep until midday Friday. For reasons that
are completely and totally uninteresting. I have I think since
since Saturday morning, I've slept maybe eight hours total total,
(01:47:19):
including a big fact gooseag last night, and I'm sure
I sounded like a man operating on no sleep. I'm
not saying that for your pity. I'm saying it just
because who can't relate to that at some point going
without sleep? So anyway, I plan on taking tomorrow off
for weeks. Got other stuff going on. But Chad Brendle
is going to be here, and then there's no Bengals
(01:47:40):
pep Rally show this week because of the bye week.
So you get Chad doing this show, I will be
headed to Atlanta for UC versus Georgia Tech. Dan Horde
will be in Manhattan, Kansas for the UC football game,
so I will be in Atlanta filling in on the
basketball broadcast on Saturday afternoon and looking forward to that.
