Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ball in Thenetti brought to you in Bard by modern
Obust Methods on the official home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
So it's football in the Natti, which means, I guess
we have to do football first. With Chad Rendel, Bearcat
Journal dot Com, let's work backwards. Today is signing day,
early signing day. But the Bearcats have a good signing class.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Chat.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
It's a lot of the traits that they're looking for.
You know, I my brain goes back to year one
in the Big Twelve when we all looked out on
the field and said, these guys don't look like those guys.
They are still in the mode of fixing that, which
I mean what they had nineteen players, sixteen of them

(00:46):
are six foot are taller, a lot of guys along
the offensive and defensive lines. You know, you've got four
offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, two linebackers, and two tight ends.
So really, you know, l players that they expect to
kind of play and make an impact in and around
the line of scrimmage, which I think was absolutely a

(01:08):
focus and I think really kind of that's where high
school recruiting is going. Mo like you can go find
wide receivers and corners and you know, running backs and
skill guys in the transfer portal. Do you go start
trying to find left tackles in the transfer portal? And
you better have a very rich donor that is looking

(01:30):
to enhance your offensive line.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
All right, So signing day is good.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
How bad have they been hitting the portal so far,
even though it hasn't opened yet.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Not too bad. I mean, you know, there's a couple
guys that you know, you probably would like to have
kept around for depth purposes, but I haven't seen anybody.
You know, maybe Jonathan Harder. But here's what I think
was telling on Jonathan Harder mo he was the first
guy when they needed a guard. He came in and

(02:05):
and they used him a little bit, But then for
the rest of the season they didn't go back to
him like they they started using Evan Tekestahl as their
number one guard off of the bench when they needed
a fill in. That usually tells you that the guy
that they used first isn't wasn't what they were necessarily
looking for. So, you know, I don't think that was

(02:28):
too big of a deal. You did, you did lose
some some walk on punters and kickers, which could end
up being important around here. You know, you never know
on that front, but uh, nobody at least took this
point that has you know, raised an eyebrow, raised a

(02:48):
red flag. You know that that that's kind of where
you hope to be in this point is you're you're
making room with bottom of the roster players to go
out in the portal and had middle to top of the
roster players.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
What happened to the offense in the second half of.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
The season, I wish I had a great answer for that, mo.
I think it's a combination of one, Brendon Sowsby didn't
play as well. Two I don't know how many of
their wide receivers were guys that just knew how to

(03:25):
get open. I mean, it felt like, you know, you
put four or five games on tape of Brendon Sorosby
being really good, and then after that, opposing defenses started
watching tape, started figuring this offense out, and it felt
like they were way too easy to just take away

(03:45):
what they wanted to do. And that was glaring because
the run game was still there, they just didn't have,
you know, they essentially were working from five to fifteen
yards downfield. They couldn't throw it over the top. They didn't.
They don't throw a lot of the short stuff that
you see a lot of teams throw now. So the
opposing defense could drop eight. But it wasn't just that

(04:08):
they dropped eight. It's that they dropped eight and only
had to worry about ten yards of space. And that's
a bad place to be if you're trying to throw
the football because they just have eight guys standing, you know,
in those spaces that you're trying to get open. I
won They've got to get a little bit more playmaking
down the field, which is a major major issue. To

(04:33):
stretch that's sown out, To stretch the defense out and
find some room over the middle. It's one of the
things Brendanzorsby does best, and they just weren't able to
do it the second half of the season. I would seriously,
you know, if I'm Scott Ciderfield, I'm looking and saying
I'm new to the Big twelve. This three high safety

(04:53):
kind of sown look is very prevalent in the Big twelve.
Why because Iowa State went to it. They've had the
best defense in the country for nine years everybody's kind
of their best defense in the conference, sorry not country
best defense in the conference for nine years. Well, then
everybody's gonna start copying that. You need to start figuring out, Okay,
what do we do as an offense, especially a passing offense,

(05:16):
that can capitalize on this defense because they weren't able
to do it over the final seven or eight games.
And it was Glare.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
I asked you this.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
I was watching your therapy session on Saturday night because
I needed it, and I asked you this, and I
knew what the answer was. But like Brendan Soorsby in
the first half of the season was good. He still has.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Years of eligibility. He is still growing into the role.
I like a lot of things about Brendan Soresby.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
I have seen better quarterbacks go into a competition the
summer after their season. Now much of that before the
modern reality of college sports kicked in where guys cost money. Uh,
should he have the job unchallenged in twenty twenty five?

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Here's the question, though, do they have the money to
go out and pay for another quarterback that they're going
to bring in to challenge him? Because if not, do
you think Samas Jones is ready to challenge Brendan Soarzby.
If he's not, then I don't know where this quarterback
competition comes from. And also very difficult. Why are quarterbacks

(06:25):
in the portal because they're not playing at the school
that they're at, going out and getting a quarterback and
selling him on we're bringing you in to challenge our
incumbent starter that we spend a lot of money on
in nil What quarterback does that if the reason he's
in the portal is looking for an easier path to

(06:46):
playing time than the place that he was at. So
I think it's a good question. I just don't know
how in the current landscape you're able unless they're already
on the roster are So how do you go out
and bring a quarterback in with the knowledge that they're
going to have to beat a guy that the program

(07:07):
believes in. That makes it, you know, a very difficult
needle to thread.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Chad Brendel Bearcat Journal dot Com.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
What was.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
What was most sobering about what happened last night in Philadelphia?

Speaker 4 (07:24):
Boy, that's a that's kind of a loaded question. I
think it's for me probably that Villanova was so efficient
at taking Cincinnati out of their offense. You know, I
would highly recommend it. It changes the way you watch

(07:46):
these games. We do a breakdown show with Chrys Lapoor
called the Bearcat Breakdown that gives you a really good
look of like, this is this is what Cincinnati wants
to do on offense. These are their offensive sets. This
is how they get semos open, and this is how
they get jizzled downhill. And watching that game last night,

(08:08):
Villanova just like stunted what they wanted to accomplish out
of their offense. And when that happens, the end result
is what looks like standing around. And when it looks
like they're standing around, the ball's not moving, the ball's
not popping. They were doing some switching on you know,
ball screens, but they were also doing some stuff on

(08:29):
the backside where Cincinnati likes to run staggers and double
screens and flips, and Villanova looked to be a step
ahead of them in most of those instances. And guess what,
you're going to play great defenses in the Big Twelve.
If Villanova that easily took you out of your stuff,

(08:50):
took you out of what you wanted to do, that
gives me a little bit of pause for the effectiveness
and the efficiency of this offense long term, because we
kind of fell in love with watching good offense over
six games, didn't we mo Uh we did? We did not.
We did not get to see that last night. And
then credit to Kyle Neptune, which I might be the

(09:13):
first person that's ever said that, just when it felt
like okay, since Villanova changed up how they defend it
through Cincinnati off then Cincinnati started to figure it out
and they immediately went to that like matchup zone. Look
that again threw Cincinnati off balance and then they again
had to kind of recover. So so that concerns me

(09:39):
that Villanova Villanova was really able to take them out
of their offense as easily as they did.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Did did we find out that there are some guys
deeper in the rotation that you maybe can't play in
games like that?

Speaker 4 (09:52):
Yeah? I mean, I cautioned everybody loves depth in the offseason, though,
I cautioned that looks the top five six seven guys
are the top five six seven guys for a reason,
and that's you know, now, look, guys like Tyler, Betsy

(10:13):
and aaronton Page, they're going to get better with more reps.
So the answer for those two guys specifically isn't simply
you can't play them, but it is that you have
to play them through some stuff. What's not fair, even
if it was just like a two and a half
minute stretch, it's not fair to them to have them

(10:36):
on the floor with Dayde Thomas, Connor, Hickman and Josh Reid.
If you're going to work those guys in, you need
to make sure you're doing it when you have the
veteran guys out there, the top of the rotation guys,
so it's not as glaring that you have your back
of the rotation guys on the floor. There were some

(10:58):
challenges with that last night. Talked about it in the
post game. Some of it was just bad luck, I
guess in the way that like when the clock was stopped,
you know, you take out, for example, you take out
Jizzle with you know, just under fourteen minutes to go
in the second half, you're trying to get him a
couple of minutes to rest, and then at the under

(11:20):
twelve time out you want to bring him back in. Well,
then the under twelve time out goes to almost ten minutes,
so there's an extra two minutes that you're playing with
that group without Jizzle on the floor, maybe you take
a time out there. I don't know what exactly the
answer is. Maybe you just say we can't put those
five on the floor together. So if you're taking Seamos out,

(11:41):
then Gigsel has to go back in or Dylan has
to go back in. But I you know, the depth
still needs to be developed. And guess what Jizzle seems,
Dylan Mitchell like, those guys are at the top of
the roster for a reason. And I don't care how
good your benches, they're not better than your best guys,
So you're gonna dip a little bit when you take

(12:03):
them off the floor.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
How close the skillings?

Speaker 4 (12:07):
Good question? I mean, I he to my knowledge, he
has not come back to practice like full practice yet.
He's been doing some shooting and some conditioning and and
working his way back. Generally, once they come back to practice,
it's a week or so, so you know, if he's
going to be back in time for the shootout, he's

(12:29):
gonna have to be back in practice probably sometime at
the end of this week or at the worst early
early next week to be ready for next Saturday. So
they're they're in a tough and then and then you're
gonna risk Are you just throwing him back out there
for his first game in the Grosstown shootout? The answer

(12:50):
is probably yes, uh, because he's you know, maybe your
most impactful player. But I mean, I'm guessing maybe Xavier
and then Dayton is I would guess a little bit
more likely at least.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
All right, you're on for me tomorrow, correct?

Speaker 4 (13:10):
I am on for you tomorrow. I'm work shopping something though. Yeah,
I'm gonna try it out on the podcast tonight to
see what kind of reaction it gets. But comparing like
the way that these rocks, like what we saw last
night from Villanova, which to music stuff, which, like you know,
Villanova last night was like a rock band with like

(13:33):
a big time lead singer. I don't know what that
would be anymore. Are their rock bands anymore? Like Villanova
is like the Rolling Stones, right Like Eric Dixon was
Mick Jagger and a good supporting casts around him, but
they had The Bearcats right now are like a boy band.
They're like in Sync without Justin Timberlake, and nobody wants

(13:56):
to see n Sync without Justin Timberlake.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I'm not sure. I want to see him right now
with him. Yeah, I understand your point.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Maybe we'll talk more about that tomorrow. I don't know,
but looking forward to UH, to getting ready for UH,
for TCU and Xavier tomorrow that that should be a
good one. And uh, is it am my contract contractually
obliged to talk about the Bengals or can I skip it?

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Do whatever you want.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
It's your shot.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
You can do legitimately whatever you want.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
Don't don't say that. Don't you know I was supposed
to be filling in today. Uh yeah, and then you know,
an opportunity for you to make money came up, so
I got the day off. It was signing day.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
Yeah, No, that was that was That was my fault.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
I neglected to tell the person in charge of the
schedule that I am indeed working on December fourth.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
So here, here we are.

Speaker 5 (14:53):
But if you know what I'm doing, you know, I
don't really really really really want to be working today,
if you know what I'm doing, tomorrow's but I'm here
here because i'm client out on.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
The Christmas party. I messed out on the Christmas party.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
You and me both all right? Take care of your dog? Thanks?

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Thanks about that Chad.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
