Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hadn't been to DL in like nine years, but the
Reds did just claim on off waivers from the Rangers
Roonsie Contraras, who is a pitcher who last year with
the Angels appeared in thirty seven games with an ERA
of four three three Rawonsie. I don't know that the
(00:21):
Reds in their illustrious history have ever had a guy
named Rowanzie. So he's a first assuming he makes the club.
What are we doing now? Chad Brendle's with his Bearcat
journal dot com.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Hi Chad, I'm a Taren and I had a bad
day yesterday.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Why well, you one?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
You said that Skinny was supposed to be on in
four twenty when you texted me, and he wasn't supposed
to be until five twenty.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
But we made it work.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
But worse of all, yeah, we found out that Island
Friday has closed yesterday for good.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
I saw this. That's not good. That is a that
is a Clifton University of Cincinnati staple and has been
for the last fourteen to fifteen years.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
It literally the jerk chicken with rice and peas with gravy,
cabbage and fried plantains was my favorite meal in the city.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
I understand.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I'm sad. I get it.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
I can hear it in your voice. I can hear
it in your voice. I heard a decent amount of
the show. It sounded fine. You guys sounded like you
were in a jovial mood.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, we were in a good mood.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
It's just like Burrow talked for like twenty five minutes
and it threw off the clock and just everything was
It felt like something was wrong in the universe. Yeah,
and it turns out Island Friday's closed and that's what
was wrong in the universe.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
So you know, that's how it works.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
I understand. I understand it is uc going to be
dating tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
I think they've got a good chance.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
I mean, it's certainly going to be a very interesting
matchup kind of just a I don't want to say
contrasts and styles, because I don't think the styles are
all that different, but the rosters are very different. You know,
it's Cincinnati's starting lineup six three six six six seven,
(02:10):
six eight, six seven foot like that is much different
than you know Dayton and likes to play three six
foot guards and Nate Santos and then zed Key. You know,
they're zed Key is their center is about the same
size as Dan Scillies. So uh, just just two different
(02:30):
ways to build a roster. But both teams are are
very very good.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
You know, I really like.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
What I've seen from this Dayton team when I've watched
them four times, and every time I watch them, I
am impressed with with I mean, I think you probably
felt this way. I talked to Drew wester Heidi today
for his podcast. He kind of felt this way. I
thought this would be a step back here for Dayton,
but probably better than last year right now.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
So they're fun.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, No, I mean Dayton won the game pretty decisively
last year, and that was with Deron Holmes, and so
when I started to think about this game months ago,
I felt like, this is one that you see should win.
And now I'm not entirely sure.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Well, it wasn't just Holmes. It was there was Kobe Elvis.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Who I think he shot one hundred and forty seven
free throws that night and didn't miss one, you know,
and Kobe Brea hit hit four was four or five
from three like they just anytime you see even tried
to think about challenging that game, Dayton had a better answer.
I think this one favors you see a little bit
(03:37):
more than it did last year because I think they
got caught trying to figure out what do you do
with Deron Holmes and then Kobe Elvis just torched them
on their defensive rotations. I'm interested to see the Cincinnati
stay big. How much do they go smaller with you know,
Gigsel James and Dane Thomas or Gizzl James and Connor
(04:00):
Hickman to kind of combat the quickness advantage that.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Dayton will probably have. But one thing will be interesting though.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
The rims at that arena have only been used I
think four times in the twentieth century twenty first century.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
They are very tight.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
It didn't matter last year because Dayton didn't touch rim
like that. Everything was right in the center. It's not
a shooter's facility, and Dayton does rely heavily on, you know,
shooting from the perimeter. So it'll be interesting to see
if that plays a factor and obviously play a.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Factor for both teams. And Cincinnati hasn't shot all that
well with late.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, I mean in the half court again Xavier, and
we've seen this in other games as well. They I
love lob passes. I love alley oops and I love dunks.
Your half court offense has to generate something besides those things.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, I mean I felt against Xavier, and I went
back and watched it to make sure, Like I didn't
have much of a problem with the looks they got.
I thought they ran pretty good stuff and they just
didn't make shots. I feel less confident about it at
an arena where the rims are not you know, super
shoot or friendly. But like last year, I felt at
(05:20):
times the offense stagnated, you know, the ball stuck a
little bit too much. I haven't felt that yet with
this team, outside of maybe the Villanova game.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
So there is that hope that if they keep running.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Good offense that you know, the shots will eventually start
to fall. But they didn't shoot it well against Villanova.
They didn't shoot it well against Xavier. You know, is
it kind of do we see an improvement or do
we start to ask ourselves next week? Is this kind
of who they are going into Big twelve plus?
Speaker 1 (05:54):
If this is who they are, how troubling is that
going into Big twelve.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Play somewhat troubling? I think, you know, especially now that
Dan is back, they do have a couple of things
that allow you.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
To overcome it. One, they don't turn the ball over
a lot. They take care of it well.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Two, they have the potential to be an outstanding rebounding team.
They haven't fully reached that potentially yet this year because
Dan was hurt for so long and it's just now
coming back. But you know, they play good defense, they rebound,
they don't turn it over. That can, you know, help
overcome some of those offshooting nights. But there's a lot
(06:34):
of good offense in the Big twelve. Like you're gonna
have to score in the seventies with some consistency to
be able to win games in this league.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
So you would like to.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
See that get corrected and then not have to rely
on our favorite, you know, the old bear Cats identity. Look,
you can rebound and play good defense and be tough
and still make shots. Promise, it's not in the rule
book that those things are mutually exclusive.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
You're you're allowed to blend those two things. Chad Brendel,
Bearcat Journal dot Com. I got like ninety seconds here.
So since the transfer portal opened in football and I
follow along on social media, I've seen I've seen a
lot of guys coming from schools with Elon and I
think there was a Dennis a dental school in Nebraska
(07:23):
that they were they got a visit from a guy.
And then there was a teachers college in Rhode Island.
I think they had a quarterback who was going to
come to town. And then yet yesterday or maybe it
was two days ago, I look in the athletic and
they're thrilled about the transfers that you see is gotten
in the portal. Are they better? Are they getting better
in the portal or they just recruiting a bunch of
guys who shouldn't be playing in the Big twelve.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
I think they're getting better in the portal. I mean
we have seen over the past couple of years. As
the transfer portal is open, you can get a lot
of help from the lower levels. I mean, I don't
think you want to count on any of those guys
come in coming in and being like the top of
the roster type guys, but you can find a lot
(08:07):
of serviceable pieces and start to continue to build that
depth in the Big twelve via this route. You know,
the obvious differentiator in all this is the nil, and
they don't have the nil that a lot of these
major SEC and Big ten teams have so you have
(08:29):
to have a little bit of a different strategy, and
it seems like right now their strategy is go down
a level and find guys that still fit your size, speed,
you know, measurables, but have also had some time producing
at the college level. I don't know that we've we've
(08:49):
they've landed anybody yet that we can look at and say,
all right, that guy's going to come in and be,
you know, a star.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
But I do think.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
They've landed a lot of guys that you're comfortable saying,
you know, these guys can come in and be serviceable
pieces to continue to elevate the roster up a level.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
I just don't know how you.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Compete at the top of the transfer portal market if
you don't have top of the transfer portal market money.
So you have to be a little creative.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
I think that's well put. All right, have a great Christmas.
Thank you very much, you as well.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Thanks well, you have a great holiday, and tell the
family Merry Christmas.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
