Speaker 1 (00:00):
Paul Folly's or something Tomorrow, don't they rename the show
on Friday's, Yeah, Friday Football? What is it? Leave first
Frinday Friday Football Frenzy Tomorrow. It is twenty six away
from five o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moeger.

(00:20):
Thank you for listening. A few weeks ago, the University
of Dayton Flyers were in Maui to play in the
Maui Invitational, a tournament where they blew a big lead
against North Carolina, blew a big lead against Iowa State,
and then crushed Yukon. And I think most objective observers
would say the Flyers will end up being the greatest
seventh place team in the history of that event. Since then,

(00:44):
they have won games against Marquette, survived on Tuesday night
against unl V and Holman. Now the nationally ranked Flyers
take on the nationally ranked UC Bearcats. But anyway, when
they were in Maui, we found out that our friend
drew us for Heidi, who works here at the radio station,
who's a huge UD basketball fan. He was in Maui

(01:05):
and I thought it'd be kind of fun to get
him on the air and talk to him while he
was in Maui and see if he could could do that,
and then as a result of that, turn in his
expense report. Since officially he was working, I don't know
if he was able to do that, and we said
you could audition to be our our UD guy. I
like our our official UD correspondent. He did a good job,

(01:25):
and so with UC playing UD tomorrow night, I thought
we'd bring Drew back. Hi, Drew. I was a long intro.
How's it going?

Speaker 2 (01:34):
It was a tremendous intro. Mo's going pretty well? Good?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Are you excited for tomorrow night?

Speaker 2 (01:40):
I am extremely excited for tomorrow night. It should be
a great basketball game between two teams who come in
surviving a couple games. You see surviving a shot from
Xavier and Dayton surviving a shot from the UNLV on Tuesday.
It should be a very very intriguing matchup.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Early in the game against Marquette, I thought day was
going to get blown out. They come back from down
twelve early to win it. What was most impressive about
that performance?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I think the most impressive thing is that they didn't
turn the ball over in the second half at all.
They got down thirteen, right at the beginning, and then
they immediately got it back to seven. Shaka Smart had
his hands calling for a time out before a dunk
was even finished, got the crowd back into the game,
and then you know, just kind of little by little,
It's kind of what North Carolina did to Dayton and Maui,

(02:30):
where they got back into it early in the second
half and then they just kind of kept at it,
kept at it, kept at it, and then the final
two minutes completely belonged to the Flyers.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Why was the game against UNLV not as easy for
the Flyers as we might have thought it was going
to be.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Well, I think there's a lot of factors in that.
An emotional win on Saturday, a quick turnaround to Tuesday,
when you have another top twenty five matchup on your
schedule against an in state rival on Friday. You know,
college kid is very easy to look past. And to
be quite honest with you, I really didn't think Dayton

(03:09):
played all that horribly and they just found a way
to win. And those games like that, you're going to
come across those in a college basketball season where you're
playing a team that you're better than, but things just
like kind of aren't going your way and you just
got to find a way to grind those kinds of
games out. And it really spoke to how connected this
Dayton team is that at the fact that they were

(03:29):
able to grind that game out.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
You have watched the Bearcats. I'm sure where does UD
have an advantage over Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I think Dayton steed. You know, Cincinnati definitely has the
size advantage. But if Dayton can kind of play their
style and force west Miller to bring some of that
size off the floor, I think that can play into
Dayton's hands. I think Mitchell is probably going to get
the assignment on Nate Santos. I think that will probably
be the matchup to watch because when Nate santon plays

(04:00):
very well, that's when Dayton is kind of at their best.
So I like to see them use their speed and
you know, find those those moments where they can get
out and transition and and keep playing defense the way
they have since Maui. They haven't allowed more than seventy
points since the Yukon game, So, uh, they keep defending
like they have been and utilize that speed, I think

(04:22):
they've got a pretty good shot.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
What is your biggest concern in this game.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
From a date and perspective, the ice cold three point
shooting Dayton is currently nine to forty from three their
last two games. They're going to a gym that is
notoriously hard to shoot at, so that is slightly concerning.
And again, you know, I talked about the speed but
used each size. If they can use that to their advantage,

(04:48):
that also does kind of concern me. So it'll be
an interesting They say styles make fights. It'll be interesting
to see which style play, uh, you know, takes advantage
of on Friday.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
I would agree with that. I think what's interesting about
this game is, you know, both teams are are getting
ready for conference play. The Big Twelve is a different
animal than the Atlantic Ten, and so if you're Dayton,
there's a premium on winning games like this in the
non league portion of your schedule. It's why getting a
victory in Malley was so important against what has turned
out to still be a pretty good ucon team. From

(05:18):
a bear cap perspective, I think there's a sense of, well, yeah,
it would be a good win, but there are plenty
more opportunities ahead because of the Big Twelve. From a
UD perspective, how critical is getting a victory like this
to boost the NCAA tournament at large resume.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
It's definitely important Dayton is currently ten and two. If
you'd have told me that they would have a chance
at eleven and two with the non con schedule they
were going to play, I think almost every Dayton fan
would have signed up for that. But you know, it
is critically important because if Dayton wins this game on Friday,
I don't think it's the discussion is is Dayton going

(05:56):
to make the tournament? It's what seed are they going
to get as long as they handle their business in
Atlantic ten play. So I think that's very well said
that while this game isn't a total need for you see,
and I don't think it's necessarily a need for Dayton either,
but it definitely bolsters Dayton's resume more than it will
for you see, because, like you said, the opportunities that

(06:18):
they're going to have down the line playing in the
Big twelve as opposed to Dayton playing in the Atlantic.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Sem you the game last year Dayton won, and won
pretty convincingly, as I recall, you produced that broadcast uh
back here in Ken and sabotage did sabotage the game,
Dan Horde lost his voice. It just it was a nightmare.
It was a total nightmare. You are you working the
same Are you going to sabotage it again this year?

Speaker 2 (06:42):
If I'm going to sabotage it, I'm going to do
it from within the arena because I'm not missing this
game this year. I made that a point I missed
last year to produce it on the radio, which I
was more than happy to do. As I said to
all of you when we started that broadcast, I was
going to keep it professional, but I was rooting for
the other team, and I am rooting for the that
other team again this year, except I will be doing
it from inside Heritage Bank Center.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Now, where can folks find your podcast that you've never
had me on?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Well, Mo, we will definitely have you on at some
point this year.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I badly need to be on more podcast. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I know you keep a very tight schedule, so we'll
find some time for you. But it's talking out loud
l ow d, you know, just kind of a inside
dating joke there. We've kind of been running it for
about six or seven years now. I became the show
runner of it. Last season. We actually had Dad brendle On.

(07:37):
We did an interview today that will be airing tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
So what a what a what a get man? Nice job.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Well, well, I thank you, thank you. You know, the
radio station has a lot of perks that come with it,
and having connections to great guests is one of them.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
There are perks working here.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Wow, I like to think.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
So all right, well I'll investigate that. Enjoy the game,
come say hi on Friday. Okay, all right, you got it.
Mode pick there, Drew Western Heidi is our ud guy.
Dan Klaskins is our fantasy football guy. If you still
have a team in the playoffs, which I do not,
you'll want his advice, he joins us. Next
