Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Here we go the Mowegar Show without Moegar again. I
got good news and bad news. We'll get there in
a minute. Welcome in. I'm Chad Brenda filling in form o.
(00:35):
Thank you for choosing me. I'd like to welcome back
Taron Bland on the ones and twos. You're doing better, buddy,
feeling much better. That's good. I didn't even like, I
didn't even want to try to like bring you in
yesterday because I knew you were just gonna be like,
I don't know, man, I don't know. Tara was tired yesterday.
(00:57):
He had the second job he worked in the morning,
then had to come here and do this. Sometimes it's
a Monday. You're just tired, but you got some good rest.
You're you're back up to full speed. You're you're operating
at optimal performance levels today.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yes, I'm ready to go.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I will say your tired performance yesterday brought the best
out you. In the Bumper music, you were in your
bag yesterday. You say it was my Jordan flu game.
So it was it was your Jordan flu game. You
weren't feeling the best, but I mean you brought it. Uh,
(01:33):
let's get rolling. Red's win five to four last night,
say a mall with the win they beat the Brewers.
I think I think that was Moe's final game in Goodyear.
I think he's traveling back today.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Right, that's probably my guess.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yes, there is a game starting right now, so it's
possible he takes in a game and then flies home
this evening. I'm just not positive on that. But the
bad news is you've got me today. It's my fourth
day in a row. I know these are tough on
you guys because Moe doesn't really take longer vacations, but
(02:16):
this one. Every year, you know, you get two on
the front end, then the weekend two on the back end,
so he gets he gets six days in Goodyear. But
he will be back tomorrow. I will be in Friday.
I think Mo is in for Lance on Friday, so
I'm in here on Friday. But I'm ready for a
(02:37):
break from you guys. You guys are ready for a
break from me. And Mo will be in again tomorrow
and Thursday. That's the good news bad news for the day.
On the mound yesterday, Nicko Lodolo gave up home runs
to the first two hitters, then settled in, only gave
up one more hit over three innings, gave up three hits,
(02:57):
three runs, all of them earned. So a little bit
of a difficult start for Nick Lodolo, but good to
see that he bounced back. And you know a lot
of times in spring training, especially early, you're working on
(03:18):
your fastball, you're working on your location. You'll see that
sometimes at the beginning of games, hitters are going to
go up there aggressive, knowing probably going to get something
to hit early, as you're not exactly playing the mind
games that happen in the regular season. So I won't
(03:39):
look too heavily into Lodolo giving up home runs in
those first two at bats. Do give the Reds credit.
They battled. The really, really, really good spring continues for
Elie de la Cruz at a hit and is only
official at that, but also walk twice. He's hitting five
(04:02):
thirty eight on the spring and his ops is two
point three two. That's bananas for Elie. Matt McClain continues,
it didn't have a good day yesterday, but his numbers
are good throughout the spring. We'll get to some of that.
In stock upstock down, the claim was over three with
(04:23):
two strikeouts, TJ. Friedel with a couple hits, and then
you know, some balance for the Reds up and down
the roster. Stuart Fairchild with a hit and an RBI,
and that's Sam Mall. That's what I was looking for.
(04:44):
Sam mal pitched an inning, gave up one hit, but
did not allow a run, and has an ERA of
nine on the spring. But he gets to win yesterday.
That just shows you how silly wins in baseball are,
because you know, pitched one inning and gets the win
(05:07):
in the middle of the game. But Red's battleback, like
I said, from down early. They were down three to
nothing going into the fourth. They got two in the fourth,
one in the sixth, two in the seventh, the go
ahead run in the seventh, and they were able to
close it out. The save last night was Randy Win.
(05:32):
So there you go on the Reds. They are just
now getting underway against color against the Rockies. Top of
the first the Reds are on the road and on
the mound is Graham Ashcraft. This is a double header
(05:53):
day for the Reds. They also play the Dodgers tonight,
so Ashcraft on the mound for the Reds first game.
Bowman and center Espina at second, Stevenson behind the play
Benson and Wright Stewart at third, Jordan of dh not
Michael Johnson and left, Callahan at first, and Arroyo at shortstop.
(06:17):
That gets you up to date on all of the
red stuff. In continuation on the T. Higgins tag news
from yesterday lowercase T tag as T tweeted in listening
and looking around, and you know it's one of the bigger,
(06:39):
if not the biggest stories in the NFL right now.
The tag deadline, I think is in fifty minutes at
four o'clock. The Bengals tag T Higgins yesterday. We're going
to talk to Paul Dayner about it in about fifteen
fifteen twenty minutes to get his thoughts on where this
(07:01):
puts things and if he was surprised that they didn't
wait to see if they get the god we're able
to get the deal done by this afternoon. Is there
any meaning to that or was it just buying the
extra time because now they have all the way out
until July fifteenth to get the tag situated, whether they
are going to sign Tea long term. If they don't
(07:24):
sign Tea long term between now and July fifteenth, I
have seen Paul bring this up. I have seen others
around the NFL bring this up. There is a possibility
that the Bengals could tag in trade t Higgins. I
don't think that that is as much on the table
(07:45):
as maybe others, because I can't imagine. After saying all
the right things, Joe had his press tour Pro Bowl,
Super Bowl, talked about how urgent it was, how he
felt it was urgent to to make sure that t
and Jamar and Trey Hendrickson we're all back next year.
(08:07):
He threw in Mike Giseki, what a lifeline Mikekaseki got there.
Can you imagine being Mike Gaseki and Burrows like we
need to get Tea and Trey and Jamar and uh
GISEKEI done? Gisecki at home in his living room, like,
let's go. I just got paid, whether Cincinnati pays me
(08:27):
or not. Are you really gonna go to Joe Burrow.
You're gonna walk in, You're gonna have Joe walk into
your office. You're gonna say, look, Joe, we tried did
the best we could all we could do, buddy, we
did the best we could. We couldn't make it happen.
We just traded Tea for a day to second round,
(08:48):
third round pick. Keep a shitting up, buddy, We're gonna
get there. Don't worry about it. It's fine. You think
that's gonna go over the world with Joe Burrow, Really
I don't believe so, and I think the Bengals know it.
I think that's why you've seen such a drastic switch
(09:11):
in their plans for Tea. Two years ago, we knew
they're not going to extend Tea. They're going to play
out through the twenty twenty three season. They're going to
tag him in twenty twenty four, and then he'll be
a free agent in twenty twenty five. Everybody talked about it.
They really didn't have any urgency in trying to sign
(09:32):
T Higgins to an extension in that twenty twenty three offseason.
They didn't have any urgency to sign him to an
extension last offseason. And then Joe makes it very clear
from the middle of the season all the way through,
because Joe knew he saw how much the offense was humming.
(09:54):
Once T came back from the hamstring, Joe wanted to
make it clear I need this guy back at to
be an optimal performance, and all of a sudden, the
tune changes inside the Bengals to parrot what Joe Burrow wants.
(10:19):
We're going to give Joe what he wants. I don't
think there's any way you fail to get an extension done.
I mean, I guess there is a way. If you
fail to get an extension done, it's either play him
on that cap for one more year or trade him
and try to salvage and get something out of it.
(10:40):
So I guess it's on the table. But I just
can't fathom the people on that front office thinking it's
a great idea. Just can't The other thing that kind
of peauked my interest is Jamar Chase his tweet in
(11:01):
response to t Higgins when t tweeted out tag Jamar
quote tweeted it and replied, what with a Joe Burrow
side eye? They got me to think, do you have
to do you have to like management to be successful
(11:25):
at your job? I don't think so. Hey, there's a
lot of people out there that don't like management at
their job, but they still go in. They're successful, They
get the job done, they accomplish what they need to
accomplish to provide for themselves and their families. You don't
have to like the people you work for, but I
do think you have to trust and respect them. And
(11:47):
given the way that this front office handled Tea through
his entire contract situation all the way up to place
in the franchise of the second franchise tag on him yesterday,
and Jamar Chase with what he went through last offseason
thinking they were close and the Bengals just not being
willing to do what he felt was necessary to get
a deal done before the season last year. Do you
(12:11):
think those guys trust the Bengals front office? Because I
have a hard time believing that they do, at least fully.
Maybe partially. Maybe they think they've done right by me,
They've given me an opportunity, but when it comes to
do they have my best interest in mind? I can't
imagine those guys think yes, can that be overcome? I
(12:37):
think that's a lot harder to overcome than just the
simple do you like the people you work for? Fortunately,
I think those guys love Joe. I think those guys
really enjoy Zach Taylor and playing for Zach Taylor and
that locker room and the culture that has been built here,
(12:58):
But I don't think the Brown family is doing themselves
any favors and earning the trust and the respect of
two of their best players with the way the business
side of things have been handled. Maybe that's just me.
What do you think I'm interested in your thoughts on that, boy,
(13:18):
we'd get a flood of calls, Tarran. If I opened
it up and said, call me and tell me about
how much you don't like trust or respect your boss,
I'll be the first one to I'm not going to
get you in trouble like that. You meant at your
other job, not this one. You meant at your other job. No,
(13:41):
I'm here. He's not talking about me. I don't think
Tarren's ready to burn it all down today he feels
That's how good he feels today is compared to yesterday.
He's ready to burn it all down. We will also
get into some college basketball. Wes Miller spoke to the
media today, so we'll hear from him and then one
(14:04):
of the one of the negative side effects of the
new system in college sports is the lack of emotional
attachment to senior Day like it used to be. You
see and Xavier both. I hate this, Tarren I hate
(14:25):
that they both play tomorrow. Xavier Senior Day will be
on the week this weekend against Providence, they play at
but I hate that they both play at the same
time in such important games. Tomorrow at seven, I'm not
going to be able to pay attention to one. I'm
only going to be able to pay attention really to
the one that I'm at and covering. I don't like that.
(14:46):
But Cincinnati will have their Senior Day tomorrow. Xavier will
have their Senior Day on Saturday. So I wanted to
talk about Senior Day a little bit, and one of
the dying institutions of college sports, Wes Miller, commented on
it a little bit today, so we'll hear that and
you'll get my thoughts. And I have great, great fond
(15:09):
memories of senior days past, back in my day before
being in the media, and uh, you know, it kind
of stinks. I most of this stuff. I just say, look,
it's it's evolving. Life evolves. Uh, you got you gotta
kind of roll with the punches. I do kind of
(15:32):
miss what it was like, you know, watching being out
on the floor, which you know, that's another cool part
of the job I've got. You get to be out
there watching Sean Kilpatrick and mc cronin Embrace on Senior Day,
or Yancy Gates or Gary Clark, you know, the the
guys that meant so much to this program over their careers,
and now you don't just don't get quite that level
(15:55):
of connection. We'll hit on that. Let's take a break,
and we will get this show rolling. It's The Mowagger Show,
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

One time the Moeger shown ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Chad Brenda.
You can find me on Twitter at Chad Brendle. Find

(17:10):
up here shortly, and one of the things I want
to get to and you know something that that I
think is important in this T Higgins situation. What really
are the reasonable options? Signing him to an extension, playing
him on the tag? I think you do if you
(17:31):
if you're absolutely out of options, you play him on
the tag and then after this year you can't tag
him anymore. He's gonna walk. But the tag and trade
it's an interesting option. But is it really on the table.
Is there really a scenario they would go to Joe
(17:51):
Burrow and say, Joe, we tried, didn't work out. We're
gonna let te go really real quick, Let's go to
Chad in downtown. Chad, what's Scott for me?
Speaker 7 (18:06):
You hit the nail on the head here. This is
why the other networks and they're talking has had this
stuff to say about the Bengals. It's if you're a
player in that locker room, there's no way you can
trust this front office. I don't care what they say,
and they need to get this salt because this is
going to turn and when people say this, I don't
think they're exaggerating here. Burrow can turn him to Palmer
if they don't. They have his whole career. They haven't
(18:29):
figured out how to protect him. He gets killed every
year he gets you know, and they haven't figured out
how yet. And now he's basically put you know. And
like I said, yeah, I've heard you say that, another
guy say this. Joe doesn't speak. He's very you know,
he plans everything out before he speaks.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
It's very very calculated.
Speaker 7 (18:46):
He calculates the thing and he went out so you
can see the frustrating that's starting to boil over with him.
And now he's going out in publicly saying what he wants.
If they box this, it's I don't know how if
you're another player a lock for how free Agent's gonna
want to come here, I don't know how much long
Burrow's gonna want to deal with this. You know, it's
just not good. Now. I knew the tag was probably
(19:07):
coming because it does give him I think people something
I don't really is. The tag does give him longer
due figure out. You could have figured this out. Thank you,
Gess and they've bossed this whole thing. Will Chase because
they could have had Chased last year for thirty million year.
Now he's gonna have They're gonna have to give him
forty million a year. They've screwed this whole thing up,
and there's just no way you can trust the front
office here. I don't know how anyone can trust. I
(19:28):
don't know how the players can do it. It's just
they've screwed this up so bad.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Agreed, Thanks for the call, Ma, I appreciate it. Have
a great day.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
Thank you.

as big as an outcast fan as I am. I
texted him last night and I said, look, I know
I'm probably out of my depth here, but would you
like to be on the mow Egger Less mow Egger Show.
And he graciously texted me back this morning and said
he would love to. So welcome in from the Athletic

Chat? It's it's it's good to know that I know
it's going to be consistent, and I'm gonna get my song.
I'm gonna get the outcast lead in every time, and
it's going to make me feel good. So I always
appreciate you doing that for me.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
I mean, I I do exactly what I can, and
that's just trust Tarn to get the job done.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
And he executes.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
He always boys. Uh, Paul, what what do you think
about the SEC getting teams into the NCAA tournament with
like fifteen and sixteen losses on the season?
Speaker 6 (21:48):
Throwing I'm here, I'm here for SEC hoops talk, let's go,
let's go. Yeah, I don't know, I don't know. I
don't know. You could probably dive into that lie more
than I could. There's a lot you You said a
bunch of numbers there, and I'm a little overwhelmed with
numbers at this point. I can imagine numbers on my
football plate, so adding any more right now might shake
(22:11):
me to my core.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Well, I was, I was during the break. I was
just looking at like the SEC slate for tonight and
Texas is on the bubble. They're five and eleven in
SEC play. There's sixteen and thirteen on the season. There's
a chance they could lose tonight, lose this weekend, lose
in the SEC tournament, and they would be sixteen and sixteen,
and they're being talked about as a potential at large.
(22:33):
I makes my brain hurt. But speaking of things that
make make brains hurt, T Higgins has been tagged for
the second time. This was not unexpected. Were you surprised
they did it yesterday?
Speaker 6 (22:50):
Maybe a little, but not really. I think you know
that does certainly suggest that, Okay, well we're not even close.
It's not going to go down to the wire here.
You think maybe it could be one where you end
up down to the wire, then you need a little
bit more to push it over, maybe next week before
free agency. But I think both sides kind of know
(23:12):
the deal right and if it's not close enough and
you know that, well maybe next week before free agency
is a little bit more of a deadline. Then this
is this is more of an artificial deadline, and everybody
knows you're going to be using the tag anyway, then
it really wasn't much of a deadline. It'sper action anyway.
So I think both sides maybe called each other's bluff
(23:34):
on that one, and we'll see how much more bluff
calling there is. It's you know, I don't know why
it has to be this hard where where you're talking
about years of this stuff. But this wasn't really as
much of a deadline probably as it typically is, just
due to the nature of the situation. I would look
at next week before free agency being more of one.
(23:58):
And then then you get to then you start getting
into weird territory once you get past that, right and
you start thinking about like, oh man, I just ain't
gonna go all the way to July, and no one
wants to think about that. I think that next week
before free agency starts, that's certainly gonna be one.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Where is there probably more of the real deadline in
this situation. Yeah, what do you think the odds are
it gets done before free agency starts?
Speaker 6 (24:28):
I mean, I I've asked this question to a number
the answer and the answer is always I'm I'm out
putting odds on these thing, on this thing right now?
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Sure, let's do vegas odds, like like what plus two twenty.
Speaker 6 (24:47):
I'm here for I'm the value you guys, you can
get that number popped up for me a little bit.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
You're teasing it, you're teasing it up.
Speaker 6 (24:55):
Yeah, and I'd love to do it with Tea's money.
If I could put I'll put down whatever I need to,
if I could use the twenty six million at least
that he's gonna get, plus whatever the long term deal
does end up at. I just think it gets done.
The timing of it. Look, Chad, here's the thing. This
offseason in general is gonna be weird in terms of
(25:17):
timelines because there's so many, so many things hanging out there,
there's so much work to get done, and they're all
sort of connected to each other, Whereas normally, I think,
you know how these things go, it's gonna be okay,
this is the week they do this, this is the
time that this happens, and then you'll see the extensions
in August. And this is just a different years. It's
(25:40):
a different, uncomfortable time for everybody over there. And and
that's speaking on everything that's happening with their players, what's
going on and trying to negotiate the stadium. They just
have a lot on their plate right now. It is
I've called it sort of the all time pressure cooker.
I mean, there is just a lot on the line
and a lot happening right now. And so your normal
(26:03):
timing structure isn't necessarily going to play out because no
one wants to see what happened last year in camp
sure with Jamar Chase and the hat and and frustration
and trade requests and all that stuff. So the urgency
to get it done earlier, but how much earlier will
they be able to get it done? Working with the
same agent changes some of those It's just I wouldn't
(26:27):
expect the normal schedule of how these things have typically
get done, you know. I like to always go through
the past and Okay, well this date, this date, and
this date is when they typically do this, and you
can you can kind of pin it down. I just
think that you can kind of throw that book out
the window a little bit. It's kind of a free
for all right now of trying to figure out when
it gets done. The only one that's in front of
(26:47):
you right now is Higgins, and if they can try
to get that thing put away before free agency, it
would be a big help for them to start their
plan forward.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Uh, looking forward to free agency, Sheldon rankins and has
gone on, Alex Kappa is gone. I'm sure there's probably
a couple more that are coming between now and the
open up free agency next week. But how active is
this team in free agency?
Speaker 4 (27:11):
And what?
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Uh what aisles do you think they'll be shopping in?
Are they they they shopping in the the expensive like
designer clothes aisle, which I don't think they can given
the other things that we've talked about. Uh, you know,
are they Are they in the discount aisle? The clearance rack? Like,
where will they be shopping when free agency opens?
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Let's see this. How about somewhere between like Target and
Old Navy? Okay, makes Coles Coles. That sounds like Coles
old school, the old school Walmart. I'm not I'm not
in the Coles cash clearance rack. No, we're not there.
I mean I've been there.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Okay, Right, look, we both started in media. We know
what shopping at Coles was, like, you know what it is.
I've been to that clearance track.
Speaker 6 (27:59):
But I'm saying I feel like you end up, uh
in that middle range. I think you pinpoint in that
middle range where you wanna where you want to be.
And that's a position. You know, the offensive line, uh
and you know like guard and then the defensive line
at well everywhere is kind of what you're gonna see
them looking at you know, I think you've you've got
(28:21):
to figure out they're not gonna be Milton Williams is
the big name I'm gonna talk about. You're not gonna
see that. You're not gonna they're not gonna go there.
But if you can find somebody in that middle tier,
next couple tiers down that can hit you in the
right spots, specifically on the defensive line, I think that's
where you would see them taking their shot. And so
(28:44):
that makes the most sense. Linebackers obviously one that's probably
gonna be out there as well. There's a decent amount
of linebackers in this class that they could pinpoint and
try to, you know, bring in. Whether it's like a
Dre Greenlaw hype who would get somewhere between like five
to seven or eight million dollars or whatever per year.
There's there's a bunch of those in there that they
can be picking through that you might see. But I mean,
(29:05):
it's it's gonna be like so many things outside of
the stars this year, it's gonna be uh a focus
on the trenches and making sure they can get that fixed.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
It's a it's a not great guard class and free agency.
Is that what I've gathered so far? Yeah, you know,
it's weird.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
So PFF comes out and they have their top one hundred.
There's eleven guards in it, and you're like, man, it
must be And then you start talking around and everybody's
kind of shaking their head like, nah, I don't see that,
especially when it comes to pass protection. So the Bengals
are You're gonna see some of these teams who love
the guys that are out there and they're you know,
they're they're plowing the way. There's these road grade run
(29:42):
blocking guards. Well, that's not really of much interest here.
The interest here is gonna be how can you pass
protect number one? And then the run thing is just
down the line and so there that's not as strong.
There's a couple of different buckets there that you can
look in. There's kind of a collection of some of
the older guys, whether you're talking about like a Brandon
(30:02):
Sheriff for you know, Kevin Zeitler, familiar to Bengals fans
who's out there, but they're old. I mean, you're these
are guys in their last legs. But do they have
one more good year in them or or maybe you
find somebody in in in a middle range that that
you can get behind and you think is good, but
it's not. It's got to be very targeted. And I
go back to with Kapa now being let oh, you
(30:24):
know how they targeted Kapa that year. I mean it
was immediate. He wasn't the top of the market, but
they thought thought he was going to be their guy.
They were aggressive from the jump and got him in there.
I think it's it's always felt like that needed to
be a recreation of that signing. This year, we'll see
if they can pull that off or if they think
that it was even really an existence.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
But I think that's probably gonna be on the mind.
I think it has to be. They've got to get
protecting Joe Wright. Like first it was tackles, and then
it feels like now they're finally established and okay at
tackle and then you have the two worst guards in
the NFL. Like it's on point in time. The puzzle
has to like fit together. It can't just be puzzle
(31:04):
pieces thrown on a table.
Speaker 6 (31:07):
Yeah, and I and I think you'll see, you know,
a decent draft pick thrown at that as well. And
you're gonna see a free agent, you're gonna see a
draft pick, and you're gonna see you know, probably another
from the thought, whether it's a Cody Ford type who's
your all, your baseline of everybody you get wants to
be better. Try to get somebody better than Cody Ford,
but he could be a starter or your sixth you know,
(31:29):
and so they're probably there. You're gonna see that also there.
But there's gonna be multiple answers throwing a guy guard position,
plus you know, trying to get more out of some
of the guys that they already have, whether it's Quodell
Wolson who's still here and who's now fighting for his
roster spot as his number goes up. I mean, it
was kind of surprising, I think, to hear new offensive
(31:51):
line coach Scott Peters really kind of kind of throw
some weight behind Bolson and talking optimistically about being able
to get more out of him this year, which you know,
after his benching last year, you might have thought that
ship had sailed. But maybe a new coach and some
new styles can can help him battle some of the
things that have plagued him over time. But Jackson Kirkland,
(32:13):
I mean there's a bunch of guys that you throw
a new offensive line coach in and throw a bunch
of pieces in there and see if he can make
it work. I mean, there's a lot of pressure on
him to do something different than what's been happening in
that room for well, you know, a decade.
Speaker 10 (32:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Well.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
And the other thing too, probably is Paul, you don't
want to look at this situation and say, let in
a not great guard class, let's go rely on finding two,
like if you can salvage Volson, Okay, because finding two
in this market seems like a terrible idea.
Speaker 6 (32:45):
Yeah, and you might need and that may be what
it comes down to. I mean, it really may be.
And I think there is a lot of guys that
they like in there. But you're right, I think there
you're gonna find somebody in free agency at GUARD.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
I don't you know.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
I just think that you're gonna find something, even if
it's on a tier three type level that could be
your you know, another Cody Ford type with some upside.
You're gonna find somebody there. And if you don't, or
if the guy you targeted ends up being taken or
just doesn't go your way, then you're just more aggressive
in the draft. I mean, you end up more aggressive
(33:21):
in the draft and going after that position and try
to take advantage of some of the guys that are there.
You just do your best in free agency and then
you're gonna you're gonna have to adjust. We'll see if
they can do it.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
They seem to be with Al Golden putting a lot
of chips in the basket of Miles Murphy and Dax Hill.
Is that a a smart gamble?
Speaker 10 (33:42):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (33:43):
How risky is that? And I mean, you're gonna have
to because you've drafted these guys and they're on your
roster and you need them to be good. But is
it how what's the risk level in looking at those
two guys and saying we're gonna be young and they're
gonna be two of our better players.
Speaker 6 (33:58):
I think it's they don't don't have a ton of
choices to make them and you can't You can't add
needing to like go supplement with free agents at two
of the most premium positions in football on top of
what you already have to do there. And you spent
first round picks to have shown flashes like last year
(34:19):
and Miles Murphy has taken a bunch of heat, and
deservedly so. That zero sax number is a real hard
one to run from, right, Like just really big there.
But I think if you look at his win rate
at some of the other stuff, it's about average for
first and second round picks in recent years. His volume
(34:41):
of play is a lot lower towards the bottom of
that list when you filter that out. He needs to
finish better. He needs to figure out how to finish.
And one thing Jerry Montgomery said, you know, new defensive
line coach at the combine US like it's one of
the most undercoached aspects of defensive line because you never
really have a chance to do it until you get
into the games. Even in practices, you better not be
(35:03):
doing that around a quarterback or it's trouble. And so
they geating that volume, which Murphy hasn't gotten as much of,
partially because he hasn't been able to do what he
needed to do with the actual snaps he was given.
They view that as part of what has gone wrong,
and so they're gonna keep pushing it. And every time
(35:23):
you talk about Miles Murphy to them and Duke Tobin
made it clear. I heard it multiple times. Is you
know he just needs to play more. He just needs
to play more. Well, that suggests he's playing more. And
they're gonna live and die with with what they felt
like was a really high traits prospect that did show
flashes at the end of his rookie year. And with
Dax too, I mean, man, it was just they couldn't
(35:43):
couldn't say enough good things about Dax Hill and what
they saw from him last year and the belief that
he can be a real guy, whether it's kicking inside
the slot and taking over for what appears to be
the end of the Mike Hilton era there or playing
outside again where he seemed to find a home and
be feeling pretty good last year. So they're gonna let
that all play out. But these are first round picks,
first round picks that have shown flashes. When you have
(36:05):
those and you're in a situation they are of having
to pay so many people, you have to bet on
those guys.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Those are their best bets that you have available. One
more before I let you go. Were you the most
popular guy at the combine? Like everybody is talking about
every time I turn on the radio or the TV
people are talking about the Bengals. Did you walk in
the combine? And everybody's like, Paul, come here, come here, Paul,
come here, let's talk to you for a second.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
Yeah, there was. There was no shortage of times where
someone would slide up next to me when I was
sitting having breakfast or in another conversation and be like,
what's gonna happen with Sehiggains? You know, there's there was
no shortage. Everybody was interested. There's no doubt. I mean
with everything else that's going on. I mean, there's just
so much talk about what they're doing, and everybody's kind
(36:48):
of keeping an eye on them and and wanting to
see it. I think the rest of the league is
like Bengals fans, but without the total fear sweating. Probably
it's just fascinating with how this is going to turn out.
I think that's kind of the sense you get from
the rest of the league. A lot of them are doubting.
Everybody's kind of saying, I don't know if they're gonna
be able to do it right, and we'll see if
(37:10):
they do. And Bengals fans are obviously feeling the same thing.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
They kick the can down the road, Paul. And now
they've gotten to the end of the road and it's
actually just a cliff. So you jump off the cliff
where you turn around and start kicking the can back
the other way. It's it's gonna be fascinating.
Speaker 6 (37:26):
Very heavy. Now the can filled the cement, it's not good.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
You need steel toed boots to kick the can any
farther than where it's been kicked. Paul, You've been awesome.
I appreciate your time. Where can the people find you
and tell them about the podcast network?
Speaker 6 (37:43):
Yeah, make sure you're following the Growler podcast. We've got
all our shows going on there and plenty going on
with free agency happening. Of course everything up on the
athletics still. You can always find everything there, and you
know on X and all your social spots.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Paul, you're the best appreciated brother. Have a great day.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Here you go, Paul.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
Danner, junior guy knows everything there is to know about
where this is headed and how it's working out for
the Bengals. A lot of great information in there. Let's
take a break. Hour number two on deck. This is
the Mowaga Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

(38:43):

Speaker 1 (38:53):
This report is sponsored by All thirty.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Here we go our number two, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Chaed Brendle and for Moegar will be back tomorrow. I'm
sure you guys missed him. I thank you for choosing me.
(39:34):
Reminder today's show over at five thirty in favor of
LSU basketball as the Buyou Bengals take on the Kentucky Wildcats.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
We're not We're not doing that. We're this Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Oh okay, okay, it's Kentucky basketball. We're not allowed to
do that. Anymore. No more mo jokes on that one.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
No, I'm just I'm ni Kentucky to be good.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
You know, you know what's hilarious, tarn I come in
here for quick hits and locks of the night or
quick hits with Tony and I sit down and and
you know, we got a couple of minutes before we
go on the air. And the first thing Tony says
to me is, boy, gonna really need Kentucky to get
that eight nine seed in the C seed tournament so
(40:22):
that they're playing at noon or one o'clock every day
and h and since he three sixty is not on
the air, you guys are competing for days off via
Kentucky basketball.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
Let's go Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
But you don't want them to do you don't want
him to get too high, right, if they're eight nine,
then then you have shows to do well, I mean,
well only for thirty minutes. Okay, that's what. Do you
want him in the eight nine seed too?
Speaker 3 (40:54):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Okay, I didn't know if you wanted them like one
game down where it would be in the middle of
like you know that the pregame show comes on three
hours before a Kentucky game.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
No, not realistically, they can't fall no lower than teen.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
Okay, and then that would put them in the night session. Yes, okay,
I got you. You're gonna have to run the board
for it either way. Right, if they're on like it
during this time slot, you're gonna have to run the board, right. No, No,
They'll bring somebody else besides you in to run the board.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
There's ways around it.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Okay, I got you. But if there's a show, you
have to be here to do the show.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
Yes, okay, I mean, but it's only a thirty minute show,
so right.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
The Reds not going great right now out in Arizona.
They are trailing five one in the top of the
fourth inning. It was not a good day for Graham Ashcraft.
He pitched two and two thirds. He gave up eight hits,
five runs, all of them are and one walk, two strikeouts.
(42:05):
It's a guy that's fighting for his life to be
in this starting rotation. Day like today, not great, Bob.
Speaker 3 (42:15):
I determined, like, is this the Ris like a squad?
Know they play again tonight? It is?
Speaker 2 (42:20):
I mean, looking at the lineup, it is not their
a squad. There's no Ellie, there's no Matt McClain, there's
no Christian in Karnassi on Strand, there's no Gavin Lux,
there's no Austin Hayes. So I would guess this is
(42:40):
their B squad and then tonight they play the Dodgers. Yes,
so I'm guessing the Dodgers will get the A squad.
Although tonight you would like Ashcraft was on the mound
this morning today, Chase Petty on the mount tonight he
(43:01):
has pitched twice. He's thrown four innings, one strikeout, has
not given up a run. This will be his first
start tonight. We do not yet have a lineup that
I have seen for tonight's game against the Dodgers that
starts at eight h five, going up against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
(43:28):
Look at tonight, I think I did pretty good there, man.
I think Yamamoto was one of those like Japanese chefs,
like famous Japanese chefs. I think there was one name, Yamamoto.
I remember that. That's all I got. I think that's
where I know how to say that name. So the Reds,
(43:57):
looking back at last night or yesterday, however you want
to classify it, uh, they win five to four win
over the Brewers. They got down early, they came back,
which generally means you know you're it wasn't heavily influenced
(44:19):
by the guys you're expecting to start. Uh, you bring
in some of the young guys in the later innings.
Those are kind of the the games that I don't
think you can take a whole lot from. You know,
they're down three nothing in the third, they get two
back in the fourth, uh, and then they score one
(44:41):
in the sixth, two and the seventh, which when which
is when you know you'll you'll really start to see
some of those secondary names pop up. So last night
I had the game up on game Cast. I was
doing a podcast on the Bearcat Journal Network. We always
have a show on Monday nights called The Bearcat Bounce,
and that one usually runs about two hours. So I
(45:05):
was tracking the Reds as we were doing the show,
which makes it pretty difficult to track pitch to pitch.
So that the show gets over and I start looking
at the stats and I get to po picked off, Freedol,
(45:27):
picked off first base, Hines, picked off first base, done,
picked off first base, and then caught stealing Hines, which
was actually he got picked off and he just went
instead of he was he was so far in no
man's land, he just went instead of getting picked off,
(45:49):
and he got thrown out at second, So it counts
as a caught stealing. Four guys picked off four They
had an error. These stuff like this giving away outs,
(46:11):
four outs given away in a game that was a
one run game. Fortunately the Reds did enough to squeak
one out. But this is the formula that didn't work,
being overly aggressive to the point of being stupid. If
(46:32):
you get caught stealing here and there, you know, you
get a good jump, but the catcher makes a good
throw and you're out. Or you're struggling to score runs
in a game, or you're in a you know, a
couple of games slump where the bats are just kind
of taking a nap and you're trying to be aggressive
and squeeze out a run in a close game and
(46:53):
a guy gets you know, out by a bang bang
play first to third, or he's trying to score from
second on a single and they get them at home
on a on a great throw, and tag like that's
being aggressive. That stuff happens. This team is not as
currently constructed. The Dodgers like that. There they don't have
(47:15):
a lot of power. They are going to have to
manufacture some runs. And I understand part of that is
there are gonna be some outs that occasionally happen on
the bases as you're trying to create things. What can't happen,
what can't continuously happen, are things like getting picked off.
(47:41):
Picked off, you either took too big of a lead,
you poorly read the pitcher's move, you you had a
bad slide back into the bag, like all things that
are on the player, on the first base coach on
(48:03):
Tito like that, these are things that fall on the manager.
One of the things that we were so excited about
when they hired Terry Francona was the belief that he
was going to be able to come in and fix
some of these fundamental flaws that we have seen this
team make on a far too regular basis a season ago.
(48:31):
Attention to detail stuff. It's like it's like in basketball
when when watching a guy try to play defense and
his footwork's a mess, and his closeouts are bad, and
you know, every time somebody gets a shot on the wing,
they pump fake and he just goes flying past, and
(48:52):
now they've got a wide open opportunity to shoot a
three or drive to the rim, or the unforced errors,
errors of a lack of consistency, a lack of attention
to detail. Those are supposed to be the things that
a guy like Terry Francona takes care of erases, gets
(49:15):
into these guys' heads that look, fellas, this can't happen.
This can't be the norm, the regular for this group.
They've had a caught stealing today, Ryan McMahon or wait no,
(49:38):
that's the Rocky. Sorry, that's my bad. That's on me.
Hand up, that's on me. They have stolen a base today.
They have not committed any errors or made any base
running mistakes, but they're still down five to one. That's
the type of stuff that spring training is supposed to
(50:00):
to alleviate. That you're supposed to feel confident coming out
of spring training that you have this figured out, that
you're on track. So maybe it's a case of you
need to have it happen for a guy like Francona
to come in and correct it. But through nine days,
we've seen this scattered throughout, that these problems are continuing
(50:25):
to pop up, that a team that is on the
you know, on the bubble kind of to use a
March term, whether they're going to be a team that
competes for a division title or a team that is,
you know, fighting to hang around five hundred. I don't
(50:48):
think this is. I think there's too much talent and
there's too much belief in Francona that this is a
team that is going to lose ninety or one hundred games.
Better not be in that position, or things have gone
horribly horribly wrong. This is a team that I think
this is going to be in that seventy five to
(51:09):
eighty five win range, depending on how injuries play out,
and depending on you know, some of these guys that
were really good in twenty three and then for whatever
reason fell off in twenty four, be it injury for
McClain or just you know, inconsistency for an injury for
Edwin and Carnacion strand.
Speaker 6 (51:32):
Some of that stuff.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
Is tied into just these little nuances, the finer points
of baseball. Because you're not a big market club, you
do not have nine high level major league hitters that
you're running out there every day, so you have to
(51:58):
reduce and minimize is the mental mistakes you have to
be crisp and seeing that yesterday four guys picked off,
picked off throws up a red flag. Is it probably
me having some PTSD from a season ago in a
(52:22):
touch of an overreaction. Yeah, it probably is. I'll acknowledge that.
I'll admit that. But boy, when you look at it
and you say, if that's the type of thing that's
gonna happen again in twenty twenty five, I don't know
how it can get much better. I don't know how
this is a team that goes from a middling team
(52:45):
that bumps around that two games over, two games under
five hundred mark throughout the season to a team that
tries to contend for an INNEL Central Division tie. Hopefully
it was just a bump in the road and just
(53:05):
something that is annoying to look at as you're going
through the long stretch that is spring training and trying
to correlate anything that you're seeing into what might happen
when the season begins. But it is not something I
(53:29):
thoroughly enjoyed. When I went back to the game cast
and started compiling some notes on what we were going
to talk about today, it was really the only thing
that jumped out at me that garnered specific interest in
that game last night against the Brewers. Let's take a
(53:51):
break more after this. This is the Moegger Show, Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (53:57):

You're deep in the bag this four days in a row.
You got to go deep. Now you are you doing
no repeats? We haven't repeated anything since Thursday.
Speaker 3 (55:04):
I'm trying not to repeat you.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
I can probably send you some suggestions. I'm just saying,
Welcome back to Mogger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Chad
Brindle filling in from ending a four day run Thursday, Friday,
Monday today. I appreciate you guys accepting me as your
(55:33):
steward of this fine program.
Speaker 11 (55:37):
Nice breaking news. What's that for those Bengals fans with
that hopes that JJ what may be a Bengal this year?
It will officially not happen. Oh, they gave up a goal. Yes,
it's too bad. Yeah, and Jjay's Watt tweeted immediately he didn't.
He doesn't like Skyline Chili anyway.
Speaker 2 (55:57):
You knew that was coming. You knew that was coming.
That's unfortunate, but it would have been fun to see
JJ Watt here in Cincinnati. Got to be more productive
than what they've had, right other than Hendrickson, Oh easily AnyWho?
(56:18):
And cheaper and yeah, well maybe, and he probably could
still command a pretty penny if you'd like to. He's
JJ Watt anyhow. That's that's unfortunate to hear the The
baseball Bearcats are in action their home openers Toledo against Toledo.
(56:45):
Last check, it was four to three Cincinnati in the
top of the fourth. According to Bearcat Journal dot com.
Man on the scene, Kegan Nickoson, I was trying to
save him for Friday. I'm gonna let him. I'm gonna
let him cover the baseball game today. I want to
(57:06):
make him have to step away and we've got a
shortened show. It's okay, let's get back to some Bengals
and the T Higgins kind of saga via the the
the Twitter lens, the x lens, tweeting out the the
(57:28):
the blue cap a couple of days ago, last week
whatever it was, uh, and then yesterday tweeting out tag
with a lowercase T, which, as Terrence so succinctly pointed out,
you gotta work to do that or was that Tony, Tony,
(57:49):
you gotta you gotta back spin like you gotta. You
gotta lowercase that tee. It capitalizes it for you. So
you got to lowercase that on purpose to tweet out
tag with a lowercase T. And then the most interesting
part for me, Jamar Chase replies, what with a Joe
Burrows side eye picture? And it got me thinking about
(58:16):
these two and their specific outlook on the Bengals front office,
because you know, T Higgins much rather would have gone
into the off season of twenty twenty three and gotten
a long term deal going into his final year of
(58:38):
his contract, and then he much rather would have gone
into last offseason and gotten an extension instead of getting
the franchise tag, And now he's franchise tagged again, as
the Bengals say their intent is to work out a
(58:58):
long term deal. And then you have Jamar Chase, who
at least caught the fan base by surprise by not
participating in camp and sitting out because he wanted to
get his deal done and he didn't want to and
and you know, this is I think the right thing
(59:20):
to do. He didn't want to participate in camp while
they were negotiating a deal because then if something happens,
you get a high ankle sprain, or you know, something
that God forbid happens to your knee, or one of
the many things that you see guys go down through
camp with a wide array of injuries. You don't want
(59:44):
that to happen while your agent is at the negotiating
table with the Cincinnati Bengals. And they didn't get it done,
and all indications where they were close, but the Bengals
wouldn't bud off of you know, what their final offer was.
And Jamar, who had all the leverage, said okay, I'm
(01:00:06):
gonna bet on myself. I'm gonna go out and I'm
going to prove that I deserve even more than what
we had on the table a year ago. He's gonna
get it. But my question thinking about all that is
how much do these guys like the front office of
(01:00:28):
the Cincinnati Bengals, Because it can't be at a high
level because the Bengals have have They've been acting in
the best interest of the Bengals as they That's not
to say that's a knock on them, because it is
their franchise. Uh, it is their responsibility to act in
(01:00:49):
whatever they feel is the best interest of the club.
But that doesn't mean Jamar and t have to like it.
What I do think they like. I think they like
Zach Taylor. I think they like playing for Zach Taylor.
I think they love playing with Joe Burrow. He's one
(01:01:10):
of the elite quarterbacks at the top of the NFL.
If you're his wide receiver, you are going to love
playing for him. But the like part aside. The bigger
question is how much do they trust the front office
of the Cincinnati Bengals to do right by them. The
(01:01:33):
Bengals flinched a little a lot from their regular way
of doing things. For Joe Burrow, that sends a message
to those two guys, right, Joe is the franchise. This
franchise has a way that they do things that they
are unwilling to move off from. But there can be exceptions.
(01:02:02):
That exception right now is Joe Burrow. They do not
yet seem willing to make those exceptions.
Speaker 10 (01:02:13):
For T.
Speaker 2 (01:02:14):
Higgins and Jamar Chase. And when it comes to trust
and loyalty, you have to question where the trust and
loyalty stands with those two. When the actions are speaking
for the front office, we hear the words. The words
(01:02:38):
are sending the right message. We want to make Jamar
Chase the highest paid non quarterback in the NFL. We
want T Higgins here long term. These are the words
of the Bengals of late. They didn't have those words
for to T Higgins the last two off seasons. The
(01:02:58):
words then we're basically, this is a business and we're
gonna do with Tea what the business allows. And he's
under contract, and T is a stand up guy and
he'll play under that contract. Then Joe Burrow comes out
and says, I need these two guys back and the
(01:03:19):
messaging changes. You think T Higgins doesn't notice that, of
course he does. And here's where the line gets finer.
T Higgins and Jamar Chase have the same agent. Now
those two guys are gonna know what's going on. You
(01:03:40):
know who those two guys talk to. They talk to Joe.
Joe's gonna know if we get to July and they
don't have an extension for T. Higgins, Joe's gonna know why.
And when you in that process, I think there has
(01:04:02):
to be trust and respect for the people across the table. Okay,
you're gonna do right by me. I'm gonna do right
by you. But that's not the message the Bengals send.
The message the Bengals send across the table is we're
gonna do right by us and you can take it
or leave it. Is that really how you're gonna deal
(01:04:24):
with the guy that's every bit the franchise player that
Joe Burrow is in Jamar Chase and a second number
one receiver in T Higgins. I think the message is
it's not even mixed. It's just straight up, this is
our way or the highway. We're gonna do it how
we want and either you take it or leave it.
(01:04:50):
Maybe it's not that way fully with Jamar, but it's
certainly been that way with Tea all the way up
to this point. I don't know that it changes a
whole other than Tea being willing to say, I guess
that's acceptable. I guess I'll take that, which he doesn't
have to. I guess he kind of does with the
(01:05:11):
tag on him. But he can take this thing all
the way out to July fifteenth and say, okay, trade me,
go get something for me, because I'm not going to
resign here. And if you do that, you take the
message that sends to Joe. They're just playing a dangerous
game of chicken. I think from this front office to
(01:05:31):
see who blinks first, and the Bengals don't blink. Generally,
this is how we're going to do it. Take it
or leave it. It's an awful, big risk for two
guys that I don't think have a whole lot of
trust in the people that are doing the negotiating. And
(01:05:53):
they don't have that trust because the front office has
not given them any reason to believe that there is trust.
They need to get at least Higgins and preferably both
done before this thing drags out all the way through
(01:06:15):
the summer. Phone lines are open. What are your thoughts?
Five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. Let's keep
it moving Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
That is sports station.
Speaker 9 (01:06:31):
Life will take.
Speaker 10 (01:06:37):
No no.
Speaker 9 (01:06:39):
Imagine smoking weed in the street without cops arrest. Imagine
going the court with no traip lifestyb crews of blue
Bahama waters, no welfare supporters. More conscious of the way
we raise our daughters. Things is shorter nights of cold.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
This head back in the day.
Speaker 6 (01:06:53):
These sneaks right and like a cobra.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
The world's hot.
Speaker 9 (01:06:55):
My son got knocked advtently as Element street.
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
They want to sort rapples going away from like what
made it rap? And this was kind of like gritty,
little old school.
Speaker 9 (01:07:04):
We don't have the top dollars. Imagine everybody flashes flashes.
Speaker 1 (01:07:08):
It's not of clothes.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
Never been the hugest NAS guy, but I always respected
his work, if that makes sense. Yeah, I think he
was a great hip hop artist, just was never what
was like regularly in my car. He's also probably right
on the edge of like when I stopped listening to
(01:07:31):
new hip hop. They say when you get into like
your mid to late twenties, like everything you like, that's
you kind of that that's what you you go to.
So like late eighties through the nineties into the early
two thousands, that's the music I enjoy. There's some new stuff,
you know, you know, are you Are you big into
(01:07:53):
Dochi yet? Karen No? I love Doci Denials the river
is just phenomenon phenomenal, So.
Speaker 3 (01:08:03):
I didn't know, see, yeah, I got some I got
some do all right.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
And she's been around a while, Like people think she
like this is new, she's been around a while.
Speaker 10 (01:08:10):
I like.
Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
I like the attitude.
Speaker 5 (01:08:12):
I like the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
The the splash, the kind of the juice that she
brings on stage. That performance at the Grammys was phenomenal.
You watched that a few times, didn't you. Of course,
because of the music and other things. I'll tell you what.
(01:08:37):
I don't know what's gonna happen, But Kendrick needs to
add her to a few of them toward dates he
got I know, I know, I think that I think
that would be a perfect fit opening act Doci for Kendrick,
and she might like she's got the best hype man
and since like maybe Flavor Flame.
Speaker 3 (01:08:55):
Her DJ is awesome. Yeah, you don't see something hype man, No, No,
And she'd.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
Like if you listen to Denials or River, that's the
one that's like talking to her back and forth throughout
the whole thing. Like her hype man, it's like that
that's a that's not a twenty twenty five hip hop thing.
I love that she brought it back a little bit.
People are like, well, these two shut up. Look I'm
I'm I'm the Ken Brew of hip hop in sports talk.
(01:09:22):
Ken does classic rock, I do hip hop. You guys like,
and you know it. Let's listen real quick to open up.
Tomorrow Senior Day for UC, Saturday, Senior Day for Xavier.
It is that time of year. Senior Day used to
(01:09:46):
be one of my favorite moments on the college basketball calendar.
It is different now. I still really enjoy it. I
will enjoy myself tomorrow night seeing those guys get their recognition.
It's always a bit bittersweet, but here's Wes Miller on
Senior Day. Kind of kind of changing in college basketball.
(01:10:10):
Senior Day it's a changing tradition now because it doesn't
you don't get what you used to get in terms
of guys that have been here four or five years
or whatever. But as a coach, what does senior day
mean to you? Getting to see these guys kind of
walk and do that stuff.
Speaker 10 (01:10:28):
Yeah, and I think you'll still get that to just
be less often, and when you do get a four
or five year guy, I think that that's something that
is even more special now, and I think we all
have to celebrate that. But I think it's an opportunity
to recognize guys that will put the jersey on for
(01:10:50):
the last time and in this arena and celebrate the
end of a college career. So I think there's still
value and meaning to it, and we'll still take it
very seriously and.
Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
Honor those guys.
Speaker 10 (01:11:05):
But it's probably different than it was fifteen to twenty
years ago, right where the standard was that everybody you know,
with very few exceptions, was in college for four or
five years when they celebrated scene it because the guys
that weren't usually were guys that left early to go.
Speaker 2 (01:11:22):
To the NBA. I remember early mid two thousand's Jason Maxil,
Eric Hicks, obviously, Kenya Martin. The Bob Huggins Kenya Martin
embrace was legendary. I got tickets for my dad to
go to. I think it was Max Seal's senior night.
(01:11:42):
He'll correct me on this on my way home if
I'm wrong. It was either Max or Hicks. But you know,
I was out on the floor for Deontay vaugh doing
video for Sean Kilpatrick, for Gary Clark. You know, on
down the list of the Mick Chrome and guys, there
was just something special about that coach and that that
(01:12:04):
star player or even that like the fan favorite that
had you know, maybe not reached that star level, but
but there was a great appreciation for what that guy
gave to the program, like a Jaquan Parker, what that
guy gave to the program and what they meant. A
Leonard Stokes who did have a star you know turn
(01:12:26):
later in his career, but you know, was was honored
for what they gave to the fans, what they gave
to the program. And it it stinks that you don't
get that anymore, and you know it's not Football doesn't
really have the same feel for me as basketball. Would
you agree tern like basketball, like Kelvin Samson last night
(01:12:49):
with Jawan Roberts, if you saw the video, like you
could see Kelvin Samson as they were announcing Juwan Roberts
to come out to center court, like fighting back tears
and then those two guys hug and you know, it
was a wave of emotion. Like something about basketball. Senior
Day has always hit really hard for me. Tarn. I agree.
Speaker 3 (01:13:10):
It's like it's like, no, it's like no other in sports.
Speaker 2 (01:13:13):
I said, I love it, and now it's virtually gone
because nobody really, you know, starts and finishes what they
started and they move on at some point in time
for one reason, money or not enough playing time or
whatever the case may be. Like that's one of those
people always talk about that missing the traditions of college sports.
(01:13:36):
That's this is the one that hits me. It's because
I was a basketball guy, I'm sure growing up and
cared about basketball at a much higher level than college
basketball pretty much was was my go to other than baseball,
major League baseball. So I don't know, I I you
look at the list for tomorrow for Cincinnati.
Speaker 6 (01:13:59):
With CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Frederick and CJ. Anthony with Sima's Lucacias and Azis Bandego.
CJ or CJ. Anthony had been here all four years,
but here was a walk on and you didn't get
to see him a whole lot. The other guys were
transfers in, and it's not that they didn't have great
careers at Cincinnati, but it just doesn't feel the same
(01:14:25):
as somebody that had been here for four or five
years and built up that type of long term admiration
and equity with the fan base. And I'm sure the
applause is going to be great tomorrow night, and it
will be deserved for all of those guys. And that's
not to take anything away from any of them, but
it is to look back and think of all of
(01:14:50):
those other Senior Days that I've been around and been
a part of and seen as a fan, and it
makes you long for those days. It makes you long
for seeing that coach standing there center court emotional. They
give the player the senior a hug. The senior takes
the frame jersey and holds it up and the crowd
(01:15:11):
goes wild, and Mom is standing there with tears in
her eyes, and you know, the players kind of fighting
back the emotion as you get ready to tip off
a game, and you know, five minutes after Senior Day ends,
it's an awesome light. Xavier will get to do that
this year, Xavier fans will get to do that with
Zach Fremantle this year. I'm jealous. I don't say that often, Tarren,
(01:15:37):
jealous of Xavier fans for getting to give their senior
Zach Fremantle. I send off on Saturday. Just take a
break more after this since Anty's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
Thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:15:55):

This report is sponsored by Dwyer Experts. Did Steve Rowley
just say what I think he just said?
Speaker 12 (01:16:41):
Taren?
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
About tomorrow? It's sixty five degrees outside right now, It's
gonna snow tomorrow night. I hate it. Here, let's go
out to the fountains, Mike in Los Angeles. Mike, if
you tell me once what the weather is like in
(01:17:05):
Los Angeles right now, I'm going to hang up on
you so fast.
Speaker 12 (01:17:11):
Man. That sucks right here. Now, brother, it's seventy.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
One, it's sixty five years.
Speaker 12 (01:17:17):
But guess what tomorrow will be seventy one, seventy one?
Speaker 2 (01:17:26):
What's going on right o? Man?
Speaker 12 (01:17:28):
I listen, dude. I can remember many years when I
was a tight down in the fifties, the early sixties,
going to Mass on Easter Sunday with snow on the
ground on a late Easter in early April. I can
remember that my dad would be so pissed off because
he wouldn't go to church, but he'd take me and
(01:17:48):
my mom and my sisters and he'd be so mad
that he had to go out and shovel the snow.
And it wasn't good for my dad did not like
that too.
Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
I hate it. I told you this, Mike. When I
moved out to LA Everybody's like, you're gonna You're gonna
miss the seasons.
Speaker 3 (01:18:04):
Got it was.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
It was Christmas. It was eighty three degrees. We were
grilling out on the beach, I was like, the seasons
can kiss my grits.
Speaker 12 (01:18:13):
You get this seasons. Yeah, the seasons, you go ahead
and enjoy them. Seasons.
Speaker 6 (01:18:19):
You know how?
Speaker 2 (01:18:19):
You know how I like my four seasons, Mike, Summer, summer, summer,
and summer. That's how I like my four seasons.
Speaker 12 (01:18:28):
That's it.
Speaker 6 (01:18:29):
That's it.
Speaker 12 (01:18:30):
And we got to bring Terran around. I don't know
how did Terran feel about seasons. I'd like to hear that,
I really would.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
Do you liked Aren, How do you feel about seasons?
Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
Give me summer and fall? I'm good?
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
I mean, I do what see, Terran? It's like la,
It's different because every night is fall depending on where
you live. If you're anywhere near the ocean, every night
is fall and every day is summer.
Speaker 12 (01:18:54):
Yeah, it's ideal, brother, It don't get and no humidity.
There ain't none.
Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
Sports off.
Speaker 12 (01:19:04):
The upper circles, mister Bland a Mediterranean.
Speaker 2 (01:19:11):
There's June gloom in the South Bay that I had
to experience where it's just cloudy for the entire month
of June. But other than that, it never rains in
southern Calis.
Speaker 12 (01:19:25):
That's why we get all these horrible fires. Right, there's
a price, But but you know, people do blow this
fire thing out of proportion because they forget. The only
time it's a really big deal is when there's a
population center in Bulk. But it's a big deal wherever
it is because of the beautiful bullage and animals that die.
(01:19:45):
It's tragic. But the state is so big that a
lot of times the fires don't impact the whole state
even at all. You see what I'm saying. The state's
one thousand miles long, for christ sake. Anyway, I heard
you ask thanks for taking.
Speaker 6 (01:20:02):
Michael, You're welcome.
Speaker 12 (01:20:04):
I heard you ask Taren yesterday if he thought that
Rick Patino was the best coach of his of Terran's lifetime,
and Tarren paused and said, yeah, yes, I guess he is.
Now here's my question for you. I agree Rick Patino
of the last thirty years. I'll say I.
Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
Would take Patino over Mike Czowski.
Speaker 12 (01:20:29):
Oh yeah, I would do. He's want what he Let's
let let's put it in perspective for people. He not
only wanted the NBA or the the NCAA championship was
two different colleges, two different colleges in the same state.
Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
Yeah, top it.
Speaker 12 (01:20:46):
It can't be taught. I'd like to see that one
may never be taught. And his record, I think you
mentioned it yesterday in conference championships.
Speaker 2 (01:20:58):
A conference title at five different schools. Unbelievable. Yeah, that's
a record.
Speaker 12 (01:21:04):
Yeah, I mean, and you know his first job you
probably know. I don't know if Paran does. His first
job was as an assistant at the University Hawaii.
Speaker 3 (01:21:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
And then the crazy thing, Mike is he also was
at Providence that he took to the final four. He
did not win a conference championship at Providence, but he
did take them and Billy the Kid, Billy Donovan to
the final four.
Speaker 12 (01:21:29):
Plus he took Ernie D. Gregorio. I believe remember.
Speaker 6 (01:21:32):
Ernie du vaguely Ernie Ernie.
Speaker 12 (01:21:36):
D was the point guard before Donovan.
Speaker 2 (01:21:39):
I remember Billy Donovan wanted you wanted me to trip
you out, Mike.
Speaker 12 (01:21:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:43):
At seventeen years old, I had a weekly twenty minute
radio show on wm UL in Huntington, West Virginia with
Marshall head basketball coach Billy Donovan.
Speaker 12 (01:21:57):
Yet out of my space, I did fact check, fact check.
That's Terry Night Check.
Speaker 2 (01:22:04):
Fall of nineteen ninety five wm UL in Huntington, West Virginia.
I worked at the student radio station and they said, Hey,
would you like to do a quick like a weekly
segment with the basketball coach? And I said, yes, I would,
and it just so happened. It was Billy the kid.
Speaker 12 (01:22:21):
How cool was that? Will you cut your teeth on
some good stuff, didn't you?
Speaker 2 (01:22:25):
Marshall was a very fun place to be back in
those days. Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, White Chocolate, Jason Williams,
Billy Donovan. Yeah, Chad Pennington was the quarterback while I
was there.
Speaker 12 (01:22:37):
Yeah, And I still think if you'd have stayed healthy,
it'd have been really good.
Speaker 2 (01:22:40):
Yep.
Speaker 12 (01:22:42):
But my question is this, is it a fair comparison
with Wooden and Patino? Tell me why.
Speaker 2 (01:22:52):
I will only say no, because, uh, Wooden had a
lot of help, if you know what I mean. The
best players in the country weren't just you know, loving
the LA lifestyle. They also they lived pretty comfortably while
they were in LA. Not that Patino didn't do some
things to bend the rules, but I think the landscape
(01:23:15):
was much different back then for Wooden once he got
that rolling, there was you know, especially you had Kareem
and you had Walton that just there was nothing anybody
really in the country had as an answer to that,
and so that got them on the role that they
got on. This is not to say I woulden't was
(01:23:36):
an incredible coach, but I think personally because of the
different styles, I mean, people got to remember Patino kind
of ushered in the three point era, like in the
national consciousness where his team was just going to shoot
twenty thirty threes. But I would take Patino not a
slide on. Wooden tarn is yelling at me in my ear,
(01:23:58):
I gotta go, Mike.
Speaker 12 (01:24:00):
Okay, cool, I understand, Okay, see you tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (01:24:03):
Appreciate you back.
Speaker 2 (01:24:04):
I'm back on Friday. We'll talk then talk then thanks,
all right, thanks Mike. Take a break since nat He's
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:24:11):
He's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:24:25):
Hour number three The Moagger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Chad Brindle filling in four mo as we head to
the bottom of the hour for Kentucky basketball. Thank you
(01:24:50):
for choosing me. Taren will be pulling hard for the
Wildcats tonight. He needs Kentucky in that eight nine C
line and then he needs a run, right, not just
get him to the eight nine seed line. But you
need Thursday and Friday, right, Yes, Well, if they win Thursday,
then we're out Friday too, right, that's what I'm saying.
(01:25:12):
You need you need to win Thursday so that it
rolls over into Friday. Do they start at one or
do they start at noon? I don't remember. In the
SEC they started at one, right, right?
Speaker 6 (01:25:23):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:25:25):
So then they got the six hour pregame show. Yeah,
the six hour pregame show, but six.
Speaker 3 (01:25:30):
Hours pre game show, but like six hour broadcast.
Speaker 2 (01:25:32):
Well, if they start at one though, that's over at three,
Like they'll be done by four, right, or is the
pre is the post game show six hours?
Speaker 7 (01:25:41):
Two?
Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
So the whole thing is six hours. So they started
eleven thirty and then they'll be done by five thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
Oh wow, because that game's going to be over at
three o'clock. Yeah, and they go two and a half
hours post game. Yes, my goodness, that's the AC. If
they're the nine seed, then we don't have a show
on Wednesday either, Yeah, because I have to play on
Wednesday as a nine seed. Crazy Wes Miller spoke to
(01:26:11):
the media today. We heard him talk about Senior Day
a little earlier. In our number two. Let's hear the
rest of what he had to say about the Houston
game and looking ahead to Kansas State. What were your
takeaways from the Houston Laws.
Speaker 3 (01:26:25):
Obviously another single digit out and you guys fought hard
with them again but just short once again this year.
Speaker 10 (01:26:31):
Yeah, I wasn't disappointed in our guys play. I thought
we thought we played with a lot of fight and
a lot of edge. I thought we were prepared. I
thought the guys played aggressively. You know, the six turnovers
in the first half between Dan and Siemos, if I'm
(01:26:53):
being picky.
Speaker 2 (01:26:54):
You know that was you know that that was a negative.
Speaker 10 (01:26:57):
But they were aggressive turn They weren't like casual turnovers.
They were aggressive turnovers. So I thought other than that,
we took care of the ball against the team that
generates turnovers at a high level pretty well. I thought
we out rebounded them, you know, like, I thought there
was a lot of really good stuff. Dada's foul trouble
was was really frustrating, not because I felt like day
(01:27:23):
they played with a lack of discipline or committed silly
fouls because they didn't feel, you know, like he should
be in voul trouble and it certainly didn't feel like
that after watching the tape, So I thought that was
Hards breaking them downs really important. And we're plus eleven
in Dayday's minutes, so that was you know, that was
(01:27:45):
I thought that had an effect on the game being
the closer game in the last possession or two. But
you know, those are my thoughts. I think we got
to regroup and we were disappointed with the outcome for sure,
so we got to regroup and get ready for another
big game.
Speaker 11 (01:28:01):
I think last year for Senior Day, you said if
a player has any eligibility left, he's not walking.
Speaker 3 (01:28:06):
Is that the plan again this year?
Speaker 10 (01:28:08):
Yeah, I think as things continue to evolve, we'll continue
to adjust. Like, you know, my feelings on the the
nature of our sport or the norms in our sport
change at such a rapid level now, like we'll adjust
(01:28:29):
when it makes sense. But yeah, like like day Day
and Connor will not be out there tomorrow because you know,
the hope is that they'll be back in fifth third
playing basketball again again. We're not going to get into
the semantics because it's different than the old days. I
think they both want to be back here. But like
(01:28:50):
There's a lot more that goes into for both of them.
Connor's got to work through a waiver and you know, like,
so we're not going to get into all that right
now because we got to focus on winning games. But
that is why they will not be out there celebrating,
because there's basketball left for those guys to play.
Speaker 7 (01:29:07):
If this is the last time you see seems or
is these play just your your thoughts on having them
as Bearcats, well.
Speaker 10 (01:29:16):
I hope I see him play, you know, yeah in
fifth right, Yeah, Okay, it's like this is at the
last game of the year at least, unless unless you
know about some global pandemic that's gonna break out again.
I'm just I'm like, oh, Scott, Scott's on the beat
man like he might know something and going on in
another countryting here, yeah the U but.
Speaker 6 (01:29:41):
Uh no, I I think that.
Speaker 10 (01:29:46):
Uh the transition from the American to the Big twelve
has been a awesome transition.
Speaker 2 (01:29:56):
It's been awesome.
Speaker 10 (01:29:57):
Like I think this this department at this university, this
community belongs in a power league and so but that's
it's been a real transition for every sport here and
for the whole department. And I think of guys like
Semas and Disease. You know, it's guys that have been
crucial to our ability to manage the transition, you know,
(01:30:22):
and uh, I think sometimes people don't realize how significant
of a jump it is from the American to the
Big twelve. And you know, certainly, like up to this point,
there's some results were disappointed in, but there's some stuff
that's been pretty good too. And it certainly could have
been a lot worse and it's not been worse because
of guys like Semas and Disease and they've they've been
(01:30:43):
able to walk through the door and compete at that
level night in the night out, and that's been incredibly
important up to up to now.
Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
And the neat thing is and I always say this
was senior night.
Speaker 10 (01:30:53):
Uh, you can't do too much reflecting because we're not
done yet. So you appreciate them, you on them. You
do the more of the reflecting when the season ends.
But those guys have meant a lot to this program
in this university.
Speaker 2 (01:31:08):
There you go Wes Miller as they get ready in
advance of Kansas State tomorrow night to uh, it's all
this year kind of this year also threw me off, Tarn.
For the entirety that I've been doing this. We used
to get these books that were for parking, like you
know the little hangars on your your wind your windshield,
(01:31:31):
you know, your rearview mirror, and you would always like
by the middle of February, you'd like you'd notice that,
like that book of like twenty games was down to
like four and then three and then two, and then like, man,
I'm really almost to the point that I'm gonna have
(01:31:52):
to wait until like November to go to a basketball
game again. And now we get them digitally. They just
like text you the link and you get all your
your parking passes on your phone. And it's not the
same because now it's just like, oh crap, senior Day,
Like I need that reminder like two weeks ago, like
(01:32:14):
enjoy this because it's coming to an end. It's all
about me, Tarn.
Speaker 3 (01:32:22):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (01:32:25):
I miss it. I miss it. I need those things
in my life to remind me to like, you know,
stop and smell the roses because in June I'm gonna
be like, damn, I wish I had a basketball game
to go to tonight. I guess that's where the TBT
(01:32:45):
kind of scratches that itch, but ultimately TVT.
Speaker 3 (01:32:48):
And your AU circuit.
Speaker 2 (01:32:49):
Right, Yeah, but that's not the same. You're just sitting
around watching a bunch of AAU games. I mean like
being in a college arena with you know, ten twelve
thousand people losing their mind and like living on every
word and me getting into it with an usher because
I was standing in the aisle because I couldn't see.
(01:33:10):
It's a whole different story. I almost got kicked out
of the Baylor game, ca tarn I have I told
you that story? No, So where we sit, there's crowd,
like right in front of us, right, So the Bailor
game got close at the end and the crowd stood up,
(01:33:31):
and I can't see through people because they're you know,
they're humans.
Speaker 3 (01:33:36):
Are you guys not allowed to stand up?
Speaker 2 (01:33:37):
So if I stand up, then the person like Scott
Springer can't see, or whoever's sitting behind me can't see.
So instead of being a nuisance, I just took one
step out into the aisle to like get a better angle.
And then our guy JT. Smith came over and was
like standing next to me. We weren't bothering anybody, and
I was literally like one step out of my seat
just to get clear of the people standing up up
(01:34:01):
and the usher that was there was not our normal usher,
and they uh just started like screaming at me, and
I'm like, well, where do you want me to go?
I can't see. I have to do my job. I
can't do my job sitting down because then I can't
see because these people are standing up. I need to
stand up. Where do you want me to go? I
(01:34:21):
don't care where you go. You need to get out
of the aisle. Well, I'm not getting out of the
aisle unless you tell me where I need to go.
It turned into a whole big thing. I just wanted
to see Tarren. I just wanted to see the end
of a great game. That's why the usher doesn't work
there usually. Yeah, that's part of the arena. And I
understand that the usher was trying to do her job.
(01:34:44):
Just where do you want me to go? Redirect me
somewhere if I can't be here, And she didn't want
to do that. She just wanted to tell me that
I couldn't stand there. Hurt my feelings. I went up
on the plaza and like got clear of everybody, but
she didn't assist any in defusing the situation. Then I
(01:35:07):
tried to apologize and she's like, I want to talk
to you that few too, then, right, dang.
Speaker 11 (01:35:14):
Well, if you need your basketball fixed doing a summer
we'll get over to an Indiana fever game.
Speaker 3 (01:35:18):
Okay, do that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:20):
It's pretty They're gonna be pretty good, aren't they? Yes,
all right, just take one final break and we come back.
We'll look at a bubblicious Tuesday Night in the NCAA
s The Moeger Show since Aaty's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
Thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

That's where I gotta talk fast, right because there's a

then you know, we just get in trouble. And then
we got to stop these.

Select Reds trailing nine to four, top of the eight.
Good Bearcats baseball of six, three three on Toledo after six.
There's your baseball update couple. The bubble is going to
be fascinating, Taran as we as we really get into
(01:37:13):
these final couple days of the regular season. It's what
you would call a weak bubble in that there's a
lot of teams that are challenging the norm of NCAA selection.
(01:37:35):
Take Arkansas for example. They play tonight, they are on
the road against Vanderbilt, and then they close out the
season at or at home against number twenty five Mississippi State. Say,
very real chance Arkansas could lose both of those games.
(01:37:58):
Right now, they are seventeen and twelve. They are six
and ten in the SEC, six and ten. If they
lose these next two games, they would be six and
twelve in the SEC with fourteen losses going into the
conference tournament and still have a chance to get in.
(01:38:22):
Georgia sixteen and eleven, six and ten in the SEC.
Tonight they take on South Carolina, who has two SEC wins,
including their most recent win over Arkansas. You would think Georgia,
who right now is comfortably in the field. According to
(01:38:43):
bracket Matrix, Georgia is a one and a half point
favorite at two and fourteen. South Carolina they are a
one and a half point favorite. Bracket Matrix has them
as a ten seed, comfortably in the tournament. Texas sixteen
and thirteen, five and eleven in the SEC. They're on
(01:39:06):
the bubble. Tonight they have Mississippi State and then on
Saturday they have Oklahoma, who is also a precarious team.
Bubble wise, Texas could be sixteen and fifteen going into
the NCAA Tournament.
Speaker 10 (01:39:25):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:39:25):
I think they would be out at that point. So
it's kind of much ado about nothing if these teams
keep losing. But these are all teams that are supposed
to be in right now. Nebraska and Ohio State are in.
Ohio State is eight and ten in the Big Ten.
Nebraska is seven and eleven. Ohio State is the third
(01:39:53):
out of six eleven seeds. Nebraska is right below one
spot below them. Make it make sense, You can't, because
it doesn't, because they have screwed this system up so
(01:40:14):
bad and overinflated these conferences and put so many unbalanced
schedules and so many teams in a position where somebody
has to win games. Is the SEC great this year? Yeah,
somebody's gotta win games. So you're gonna pick up a quad,
(01:40:35):
a couple quad ones like back in quad ones, or
a couple of quad twos here and there. It's because
there's there's no other choice. You go winless in the conference,
five six conference wins, and we're still talking about potentially
being in the field. It's crazy to me. But the
(01:40:59):
good new is for UC and Xavier. Plenty of these
teams are gonna have a chance to play their way
out between now and the first round, second round of
conference tournaments conference championship week next week. So it'll be
interesting to follow tarn it has been an honor and
(01:41:26):
a pleasure to spend these last four workdays with you,
my friend. Like what, but I'll see you on Friday.
I will see you on Friday, and then two weeks
