Speaker 1 (00:00):
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Here we go Friday in the Queens City, A little dreary,
little cold, but not terrible. It's it's, it's, it's okay
Friday for early March. Thank you for choosing me, Chaed Brendle,
(00:40):
And for Moeggar. You can hear Mo tonight is he
is doing a radio show. It is just down the
hall at a seven hundred WLW. He is filling in
for Lancer Callister tonight. They're scrambling over there. They do
they do they have things figured out yet over there, Karen,
I'm not sure they were expecting to broadcast the Reds
(01:05):
today taking on the San Francisco Giants. It is raining
in Arizona and the Reds game has been canceled, not postponed, canceled.
Dun dun, dunha.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
We don't need to make up any spring.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
No, there's no need to make up spring training games.
They are scheduled to play the Diamondbacks tomorrow with Nicolodolo
on the mound, and they are scheduled to uh to
play again on Sunday against the Angels starter TBD for Sunday.
(01:43):
I've heard good things about TVD Tarren having a good spring.
Keep an eye on him making the uh the opening
day roster. It's funny because that's uh actually right now,
that's the fifth starter for the tarn TVD. Guy's name's
coming up a lot. The Reds have named their their
(02:07):
early starting rotation, or at least four fifths of it,
with Hunter Green being announced as the Reds opening day
starter as expected. I think people were surprised last year
when Frankie Montas, remember him, when Frankie Montas got the
opening day start over Hunter Green. But Hunter Green will
(02:29):
be on the bump this year, also in the starting rotation.
I think this part was expected. Nick Lidolo, Nick Martinez,
and Brady Singer. Those four will be in the starting
rotation for the Cincinnati Reds. They have not announced who
that fifth starter will be. Andrew Abbott, Graham Ashcraft, you know,
(02:51):
a couple others looking and eyeing that spot. Probably comes
down to one of those two, with both of them
having you know, pretty substantial, significant major league experience on
their resume in this organization, I would guess Abbott if
I had to guess, but that's it's just a guess.
(03:14):
So that is the four to fifths portion of the
Reds opening day rotation. We will We'll get to that
a little bit later in the show. Also, did you
see tarn the Reds over under win total set at
seventy eight point five seventy eight point five wins on FanDuel,
(03:36):
ninety five percent of the action is on the over.
That is the most money being placed on any team
to beat their expected wind total. According to Vegas, I
typically feel pretty good about citing with Vegas in these things,
(04:01):
and that would mean under right, you think I'm doing
that right, Terran? If Vegas sets the line and ninety
five percent of the money is on the over, betting
on Vegas would be betting the under, wouldn't it because Vegas,
like those buildings, didn't build themselves. H What do you
(04:28):
think over seventy eight and a half? I feel pretty
good that, you know. I like the starting rotation. Like
we just mentioned those four guys at the top, I
think gives the Reds a chance to have a very
good starting rotation.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I'm sorry, someone was talking to me.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Tell them to shut up. I'm We're doing a show.
If if ninety five percent of the money Terran is
on seventy eight point five over, would siding with Vegas
be taking the under, Like, wouldn't Vegas wins if the
(05:05):
under hits there?
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Right?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Ninety five percent of the money is on the over? Yeah,
that would tell me Vegas thinks the under. Vegas doesn't
want to do anything. The whole goal of Vegas is
to be even and then Vegas makes the juice correct
fifty percent here, fifty percent there. If ninety five percent
(05:27):
is on the over, that makes me scratch my head
a little bit. It makes me think Vegas is like
doing something they're not. You know, I don't know. That's
a lot of money on the over. What would you
where would you place your bet? Would you be part
of the ninety five percent?
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, I'm going over.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I would have gone over too, But seeing ninety five
percent makes me think, hmm, Vegas might be tricking.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Some people, or Vegas might make a midseason call to something.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
You know, a lot to get to with the Bengals, obviously,
the Trey Hendrickson news out yesterday from Adam Schefter, the
Bengals have granted Hendrickson permission to seek a trade. I
(06:20):
think that was writing on the wall for that when
Mason Crosby signed his deal with the La Raider or
the Vegas Raiders, whatever the heck they're called now, La Oakland.
They've been so many things in my life, Hearin back
to La, back to Oakland. I don't know, and this
(06:41):
has been expressed. I just don't know a defense with
this many holes, with this many question marks, with as
bad as they were last year, that you can put
that much money into a guy that is essentially a specialist.
At thirty three tackles last year, seventeen and a half
of them were sacks, more than half of his recorded
(07:04):
tackles in a seventeen game season or sacks. Is he
a great sack artist? Yes? Does he give you a
whole lot else? No, not really, less than a tackle
per game. That's not a sack from your star. You
know what would be thirty plus million dollar defensive end
(07:27):
that works if you've got a great defense that's also
around him. If you're paying that much money to one
guy and he gets a sack and a tackle per game,
so two tackles and one sack per game, is that
thirty three million dollars? I don't think it is. I
(07:51):
think they're making the right decision here given what we
the place in time that we are at right now.
So that's topic one on the Bengals. Topic two though
on the Bengals is once again, we are here because
they have forced themselves into this situation. I will once
(08:15):
again contend they are the worst penny pinchers in the
history of penny pinching. Everybody calls them cheap right, they
are the worst cheap skates I've ever met in my
entire life, because everything that they do, every decision they make,
costs them more money than it should have. Or then
(08:35):
you have to do something like this and end up
in a situation where Trey Hendrickson is out the door.
Why think how much more room you would have to
spend if T Higgins was extended two years ago, if
Jamar Chase was extended last year. I brought this up
(08:58):
last week. They are horrible at understanding how the market works.
If you decide you want to keep T. Higgins, you
extend him as early as possible so that you get
(09:18):
the money portion out of the way, You get the
player paid, they get their guaranteed money, and you get
on that back into that contract where we would be
right now, so that you can manage having a guy
like Trey Hendrickson also on your team. Same thing with
Jamar Chase. Had a chance to get Chase done last year,
(09:42):
mess the thing up at the horn, Chase doesn't sign,
Chase goes out, has a triple crown season. Now you're
gonna you know you probably Let's say, if t Higgins
is looking in the twenty eight million range, you could
have had him for eight teen million dollars a year
two years ago average value, the four year deal, eighteen
(10:05):
million dollars a year would have got the job done. Instead,
it's going to be twenty eight to thirty. That's ten
to twelve million dollars that you would have had additionally
to spend this offseason, Jamar Chase, say you get that
done last year, that would have been in the thirty
five range. Now it's going to be forty plus. You've
(10:30):
cost yourself five million dollars a year because you didn't
get across the finish line when the clock said you
could get get things done. You think if they had
another fifteen million dollars this year, that doesn't impact something
they could do with Trey or go out and find
(10:50):
a guy in a similar situation. Come on, they're doing
this to themselves. They had to let Trey Hendrickson walk
in this current environment, in the situation that they're in
right now, because the defense needs massive help, and Joe says,
(11:10):
I need Tea and Jamar back. Long term, Trey was
the odd man out. We knew that. It's not shocking.
What did we talked about last week? Fifty for Joe,
forty for Jamar, thirty for t Twenty five was a
low number. Apparently for Trey, more than half the salary cap,
(11:36):
with all the holes and all the other things the
Bengals need to solve, more than half your salary cap
would have gone into those four guys. It was never
gonna happen. It's never gonna work. Somebody had to be expendable.
And it's sure as you, sure as hell weren't walking
into Joe Burrow's or walking into a meeting with Joe
Burrow and telling him one of those two guys is gone.
(12:00):
What's gonna happen? Can someone just look around and realize
letting everybody else set the market, because that's what happened here.
The Raiders set the market. Bengals had to respond to it.
What happened last year, Vikings set the market with Justin Jefferson.
(12:26):
Now the Bengals have to respond to that market with
Jamar Chase. Happened the year before that. Justin Herbert set
the market before Joe Burrow. Now some of that, I'm
sure was Joe Burrow saying I'm not signing before Justin Herbert,
and Justin Herbert gets a dollar more than me. No,
we're Justin Herbert's gonna sign first and then we're gonna
(12:47):
go over top of that, they had a chance to
set the market with Jesse Bates. They didn't do it
for being cheap. They are the worst cheapskates in the
history of penny pinching. We'll also get to the news
(13:08):
from Jason Williams of The Inquirer that Wes Miller will
be back next year. I think everybody knew that if
you've listened to any content that we've done on Bearcat Journal,
there was no expectation, no belief that Wes Miller's job
was in jeopardy following this season. Cunningham has come out
(13:30):
and given him the vote. It's not even really a
vote of confidence. It's just Wes Miller will be our
basketball coach next year. He will upset I understand that
from the perspective that fans are invested in the moment.
(13:51):
Fans generally do not look a whole lot farther down
the road than what is currently happening right now. And
that's being a fan that is absolutely within their lane
to do. Because the fans are the ones spending the money.
(14:13):
The fans are the ones going to games and watching
that miserable performance that Cincinnati put on the court Wednesday.
Of course they're gonna be reactional. Of course they're gonna
be emotional. I always liken it to this, Tarren. You
spend a bunch of money on the concert, on a
concert to go see a show. You don't want to
(14:34):
walk to your car thinking what the hell was that?
What did I just witness? You go to a movie.
Probably happens in movies more than it does anything where
you go to a movie. In the movie, maybe stunk
didn't meet your expectations. You're walking back to your car
pretty upset. You spent your hard earned money to go
see that movie and the movie did not meet your expectations.
(14:57):
Of course you're gonna be mad. You walk out a
fifth third or after a performance like Cincinnati had on Wednesday,
you're not in a good mood. Do you want answers?
I do think we go a little over the top
with the fire everybody thing, and we'll talk about that later.
But one way or the other, West Miller is going
(15:19):
to be back. If you have thoughts about that, we
can talk about that. We'll talk about Xavier and Providence
this weekend. You see at Oklahoma State a stat that
if you're a bear Cat, or a number that if
you're a bear Cat should make you very concerned. For
three o'clock tomorrow afternoon, we'll look at the college basketball weekend.
(15:39):
Like I said, we'll talk to Jeff Carr of Locked
on Reds get his thoughts on things with no baseball today.
So if you're planning on listening to the Reds, the
Reds aren't there. Now you're here, Hello, Welcome, Let's take
a break. Phone lines are going to be open pretty
much all day. These are emotional topics. I want a
chance for you to respond and react. So five, one, three, seven,
(16:03):
fifteen thirty, give me a call. We'll talk about it.
This is the Mowagger Show. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

North Bend Road, it's an accident at West Fork Road,
northbound seventy five. Traffic running slow from Mitchell up towards
Paddock Rode a four minute delay at the moment. Southbound
(16:38):
seventy five also slow from Shepherd Lane down toward Town Street.
That is a six minute delay on at Ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
The world.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah, well around.
Speaker 6 (17:04):
The world.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
About the Bengals, kind of yeah, kind of yeah. Remember,
let's see if mister Ace remembers this. Mister do you
remember what movie this was featured in?
Speaker 7 (17:31):
So that was dang it, dangy, dang it, danky, thank
you Chevy Chases in the movie, was correct? Yeah, dang it, man,
you were asked me and I can't think of the
name of the movie, but Digital Underground formed that in the.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Movie I'll give you Chevy Chase. Dan Aykroyd, John Candy,
and Demi Moore.
Speaker 7 (17:56):
Oh my gosh, I remember the movie.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
I can't think of the movie nothing but trouble.
Speaker 7 (18:02):
Ah, Yeah, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Brother man?
Speaker 6 (18:09):
Dude?
Speaker 8 (18:10):
Is Friday?
Speaker 7 (18:10):
I guess I could say is normal day, same song
against Cincinnati. Unfortunately, we're in a black hole of sports
sometimes sometimes nineteen nineties World Championship. If we could count
anything of significance happening on a national level for.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Sports here, you had, you had well, I mean you
did have a a one month window that saw uc
play in the college football playoffs and the Bengals playing
the Super Bowl. I know, no titles like I mean,
there's no title. There's no titles to talk about.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
As much as I hate my time when I lived
in Alabama one day, I can't say that was clear
and why Alabella proved that they were the Hammer and
Auburn was the nails. The titles many shot.
Speaker 9 (19:05):
A champions springs.
Speaker 7 (19:07):
I mean, why do people hating ore Dame the titles?
Why do people hate Ohio State? The titles? Why do
people hate Ala Bumble in the sec? The titles and
their fans?
Speaker 2 (19:19):
I would say people hate Ohio State because the guys
like Austin Elmore.
Speaker 7 (19:26):
Hey man, I'll speaking terms. I can't let you take
most shots.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Look, he takes enough shots at UC fans and I
get a swipe in every now and then, I'll get it.
Speaker 7 (19:36):
I get it man with the bagels, Man, this is
definitely I mean, their poor management of the salary cap
definitely does go back to I was I'm not I'll
keep it claim to the person that negotiates most of
their contracts, who I believe is Katie. Yes, So we'll
(19:58):
just have to leave that in Katie's client. And hey,
if we end up having to have a rebuild, we
end up having to have a rebuild, but that defense
without trade because they failed to sign him last offseason,
because he even told you he wants you to sign him.
Why you didn't try and get him to the table
before everything just breaks loose with people getting cut and stuff.
(20:21):
I don't know, but that's all I them. But I
think it puts us center spot. You can't pay him
less than you pay Matt Crossty got on Thak. I
think it's more accomplishments on what Trey's done the last
couple of years, and then you look at the fact
that the defense is already and shambles as it is.
You got Trey Henderson and nothing, so you're doing a
(20:44):
total defensive rebuild, Like we're basically pulling a whole punch
of magic out of a rabbit's.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Hat, but you were doing a major defensive rebuild with Trey,
I would look, here's here's what I said earlier. I
don't know if you had a chance of here or not.
He's like a great three point shooter that doesn't have
a whole lot else to his game. True, he's he
made less than the number of sacks he has. That's
(21:12):
how many tackles he had last year. Get thirty three tackles,
seventeen and a half of them were sacks. He's not
helping you in the run. He's not helping you other, like,
in any other area than getting to the quarterback, which
he is great at. That is not to diminish that,
but that is to say, if he wants Crosby money,
(21:33):
he's got to do more than just getting to the quarterback.
And he hadn't done that here in four years.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
True.
Speaker 7 (21:40):
Now, one of my biggest issues with Tray is he
only rushes from one side.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
From the right side.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
Yeah, and I'm like, why can't they move this guy
up and down the line? That will probably be like
to me, my biggest thing.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Now.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
Now, I don't know that you would be able to
pull this trade off, but under this condition, I would
be a portrayed them to the Cleveland Brown four miles Geary.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
That's not happening.
Speaker 10 (22:10):
I mean, we know.
Speaker 7 (22:10):
It's not happening. That wouldn't happen on a video game.
But that's that, and I would That's what I would do,
because I mean, it's like, I know, only gotta worry
about him one rushing down because he's not gonna really
I would literally if the Bengals didn't trade him to Cleveland,
I would literally run at him every single play on
(22:32):
running down and double team them and do whatever on
rushdown and then do what you gotta do because he's
limited and how he can effect the game. It's not
like he's gonna be all over the place if you're
game planning against him down if he's whooping a guy
who he's going up against a game like he did
last year and the year before that and before that
(22:53):
even and you got issues. But moving on, man, moving on,
I know you got time, you got other collars, man,
I do. Hopefully we got camped down to the system
that he rids. Hopefully they could win the April championship,
or maybe just playing train a championship, or maybe keep
it interesting for the whole season. But I do hope
(23:13):
they get more than seventy eight wins. They'll really do
me too.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
It'll make summer a heck of a lot easier around
here because we're in We're not gonna have a lot
of fun Bengal stuff to talk about until the Bengals
show otherwise on the field next year. And we're not
gonna have any fun UC stuff to talk about until
the Bearcats show otherwise on the field. So we're gonna
need the Reds to do their part and chip in
the summer race. I appreciate the call man.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
We'll talk to you, don't Reds fcs.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
All right, Jeff and Jeff Hefe and Hefe. We're to
take a break. We'll get to you when we get back.

Thinking of a master plan. This ain't nothing but sweat
inside my hands? So why dig into my pocket?
Speaker 6 (24:46):
All my money spend?
Speaker 2 (24:47):
So I the de bouk still coming up with link,
so why stop my mission?
Speaker 5 (24:51):
Leave my res advents thinking how I could it gets?
Speaker 12 (24:55):
I used to be a stick up kids.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
Watch are you blow up? Let's go to good Year
where Jeff is having thirteen dollars cheese conies. Jeff, how's
it going?
Speaker 12 (25:09):
I just made it back to the hotel. The Reds
pulled the Nationals today. They got everybody out there to
buy their beers and hit the pro shop and everything
and called the game at two minutes to one o'clock.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Yeah, it had everybody scrambling here. It looked like a
fire drill.
Speaker 12 (25:27):
The Nationals are world famous for making people pay for parking.
Bring their kids. Blah blah blah blah, eight fifteen for
seven o'clock start they call the game. Yeah, so I
mean it's not what I mean it is. It is cold, windy,
porn down rain, and so foggy you can't even see
the mountains out here. So you know, I was I
(25:48):
was going to go to the canyon tomorrow, but I
got a ticket for tomorrow's game and I'll go to
the canyon on Sunday. The weather's supposed to get much better.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
All are you out there?
Speaker 12 (25:56):
I'm out till Monday, and uh now I'm looking for
the best happy hour in Avondale, Arizona.
Speaker 9 (26:02):
If anybody has some recommendations, call it in please so.
Speaker 12 (26:06):
But no, I was hoping he wasn't in the lineup today.
But there's a kid from our local high school in
Virginia who's on the Giants and one year in they're
projecting him to be in the Major League this year.
But he wasn't in the lineup today, So you know,
it's good to get out here. The weather's going to
get better, so no problem with that.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
And I guess you know.
Speaker 12 (26:30):
My biggest thought on the Bengals is, you know, I
just don't see any hope for the future. You know,
I guess a couple of year came out. Oh you know, no,
but I mean, so, let's say the team is worth
three point seven or four billion, like people say that.
Speaker 8 (26:47):
You could offer.
Speaker 12 (26:48):
You could offer them six and they would not sell.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
No, it's the family business and they don't know how
to do anything else.
Speaker 12 (26:57):
And no offense to these young girls. You know, this
team right now is being run like the Cleveland Browns
of the nineteen fifties, and I don't see anything changing
with the way mom and dad are going to teach
the young puppies.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
What do you think I'm wrong? What do you think
of my belief that they are the worst penny pinchers
in the history of penny pinching. Everything they do costs
themselves more money.
Speaker 12 (27:24):
Well, that's just flat out stupidity, you know. Of course,
last year the league voted to let venture capital people
invest ten percent in the team. The vote was thirty
one to one, like it always is, and we know
who voted against it. They will never even take on
a tent. They just bought out the doctor from Hawaii
(27:45):
last month. I heard through some inside channels, so we
were at our high school reunion back in October, and
I just was joke with some of my buddies. I'm like,
I know, we could round up fifteen people and put
the money together. And my one buddy, who's pretty high
up in finance at one of the local institutions, he goes,
total waste of time. They aren't going to sell, so
(28:07):
you know, they're just not the people to build a
house on Cape Cod. The outer banks are down in
Florida and sit back and drink Gin and Tonics all
day long.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
We're stuck.
Speaker 12 (28:17):
It's it's unfortunate that somebody can't plan for the salary
cap going up thirty million dollars every year or more
going forward. And I would love to see Duke spreadsheets
sometime and just see how they have it all laid out.
And you know, whether it's true or not that they
don't have the cash for these s Gro guarantees, nobody knows.
(28:39):
I think that's not even really a worthy topic of
conversation because.
Speaker 9 (28:42):
I assume they do. But all the people who.
Speaker 12 (28:45):
Say, oh my god, Mike Brown is worth three point
seven billion dollars, He's not worth three point seven billion
dollars Until somebody offers him that his liquid net worth
is less than five percent of.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Out amount, righty, So they don't have a whole lot
of that's I mean, that's why I wondered last year
if they didn't have the money to put in escrow
to give Jamar the deal that Jamar wanted, because remember
that was the story the season before. They were doing
everything they could to get the money in escrow so
that they could pay Joe has guaranteed money, and they
(29:18):
don't have the type of money to back to back,
like in twelve months come up with a couple hundred
million for Joe and then a couple hundred million, you know,
two hundred million, hundred and fifty million more guaranteed for Jamar.
They don't have that kind of money.
Speaker 12 (29:35):
There has to be a VC shop in Cincinnati, it
would be, or somewhere in the country in New York.
They'd love to invest in the Bengals. They'd probably get
a good return on their ten percent investment. But I
would think, you know that, my problem is not what's happening.
My problem is I don't think we have a way
out of it. That's what I'm concerned about.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I don't think you're wrong, all right, I keep it moving, Jeff.
You have a one the time, and good year and
we'll talk soon.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Man.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Have Greg too.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
It's going to Jeff and New Richmond. Jeff wants to
talk to John Cunningham announcing Wes Miller is back today
and other UC questions. What's up, Jeff?
Speaker 13 (30:15):
Hey, cham how are you today?
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Uh, it's a rough day for me, but I'm doing okay.
Speaker 14 (30:22):
All right.
Speaker 13 (30:22):
Hey, So, just a few things I wanted to bring up.
As far as the John Cunningham thing, Yeah, and I
kind of you know, I've talked back to you before,
but I've never actually talked to you, so I appreciate
you giving me a little bit of time, no problem.
So as far as the John Cunningham situation, why didn't
(30:43):
he just stay quiet?
Speaker 2 (30:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (30:45):
He knew that Wes was coming back next year. I
don't understand why he feels the need that he had
to come out. All he's going to do is piss
off the fan base even more than they're pissed already.
I don't understand why he would even do that unless
he's just trying to mock the fan base.
Speaker 8 (31:03):
And no, I don't.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Come on you know it's not that I I I
think it's I don't think it was a great decision.
If if I was asked my advice, I would do
what you said. I just would shut up and not
say anything like I I wonder. I guess it could
be a situation where you know the Inquirer was going
to write a story either way.
Speaker 12 (31:23):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Generally, when a when a journalistic outlet is going to
do something like that, they will give you a chance
to uh say your piece. I don't know if that's
what it was, where like they were they call you
see and say we were gonna say we're gonna write this.
Here is your chance to have a say if you
would like to. I would have declined either way. I
(31:47):
don't think enough people read the inquire for it to matter.
Unless you say something, and now everybody's talking about it
and you've given credence to that that report, I would
have kept quiet personally.
Speaker 13 (32:01):
Jeff right, Yeah, I agree with you there. Now, as
far as this Crown Tournament goes, my feeling was as
far as the.
Speaker 9 (32:12):
Uh oh lee, because West.
Speaker 13 (32:16):
Really needs to dig into this this transfer portal.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Can you repeat you cut out for a second. Can
you repeat you cut out for a second. The Crown Tournament, no.
Speaker 13 (32:24):
No problem. So as far as this the Crown Tournament
and stuff, you know, I really feel like they should
skip that I can't and I think they can't.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
They cannot.
Speaker 13 (32:37):
So what happens if they only have four players? After
everybody jumps into the portal.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Get a couple walk ons because you are contractually obligated
by Fox to play in that tournament.
Speaker 13 (32:49):
Okay, now do we have coaches? They can hit the
portal and try to recruit while this.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
Is going on.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
So they have changed a lot of the structure in
college basketball. Now you have and it used to be
you had three bench assistants. Those were your three guys
that could go out on the on the road and
recruit and that's it. Now you have five bench assistants.
You still have the three guys that are designated as
like recruiting assistants, but you have two additional guys that
(33:21):
can help out. And then the restrict the limitations on
who can be on the floor with the team are
lesser now than they used to be. So it's not
you know, five years ago, if you were in the nit,
like you couldn't recruit because you had to have all
hands on deck. I don't think that is the case
anymore because they have more than enough guys that can
(33:44):
rotate in and out and take care of game planning
responsibilities as well as making sure that you're you're on
the portal.
Speaker 13 (33:53):
Right, don't you just seem don't you feel like that
that has to be the priority? Yes, for this team? Sure,
I mean it just seems like that's kind of being
taken away from with the timing of the tournament. You know,
why wouldn't they do that like the first week before
the NCAA tournament starts to kick.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Off, because they do it like they see it as
an opportunity that week. They do it the week leading
up to the final four. So like when the Elite
Eight ends on Sunday, this tournament will start on Monday.
There's not a lot of content, there's not a lot
of inventory in that week lead up to the Final four.
So my guess is they took a look at that
(34:35):
and said we can fill a content void on Fox
and FS one. I don't know how much is going
to be on Fox, how much is going to be
on FS one, but there's still a craving for college
basketball or a hunger for college basketball. I don't know
how much I personally think it's a I don't think
it's the right play for Fox here. I get whether
(34:58):
they're doing it, but I don't think it's going gonna
be as lucrative as they believe it to be because
of the portal and because of focus by that point,
like the the sixteenth, I guess the fifteenth, sixteenth is
the conference tournament weekend, then the twenty fourth the portal opens,
(35:18):
and then March thirty first is the start of that tournament.
That's a lot of time in between the end of
the season, and so much like when Cincinnati, whenever they're
running Kansas City ends, when they get home, they'll maybe
give them a day, but then they'll immediately get into
what's gonna have, you know, unless they they go on
a run and win the whole thing. I don't think
(35:39):
any of us think that is likely at this point.
But they will immediately get into meeting with the players
on what their plans are. Are they gonna stay? What
you know? Now, part of that conversation is what money
is it gonna take to keep you? Do we are
we interested in paying you that much? Then all those
decisions are gonna be made between the end of the
(36:00):
conference tournament and the opening of the portal on the
twenty fourth. You have no clue what your roster is
going to look like on the thirty first.
Speaker 13 (36:07):
That's true, that's true. Yeah, all right, well, I guess
that's all I had for you. I appreciate your time
and breaking all that down for me. And like I said,
I really want to support Wes. I want him to
do well, but it's tough, right then start, you know,
getting there?
Speaker 2 (36:26):
Yeah, you know, for sure, without question it's done.
Speaker 13 (36:30):
Yeah, it's definitely frustrating. So I think Tony's gonna put
me on suicide watch this weekend.
Speaker 9 (36:36):
He's like, I just.
Speaker 13 (36:37):
Soked Jeff as a good weekend, and I will, and
I hope you guys do the same.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Thank you so much, Thanks, Jeff, appreciate the call.
Speaker 13 (36:45):
All right, take care.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Thanks, We got we gotta we gotta bounced.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Hearn.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
All right, let's take a break. Our number two coming up.
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (36:56):

Speaker 2 (37:47):
Here we go Hour number two Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty
Chad Brindle and the driver's seat from MO Eggar today.
You can hear MO tonight on the Big one seven
hundred ULW filling in for Lance McAllister. No reds today
(38:12):
rained out. Jeff called us from good Year. He's there
for a little spring training. Actions it's cold, it's raining,
and it's so foggy you can barely see the mountains.
I can see the hills, the rolling hills of Cincinnati
out the window. Terran, So it's a better day here
(38:33):
than it is in Goodyear, Arizona.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
I agree. Have you seen the early days next week?
Speaker 2 (38:40):
I have seen the forecast for next week, and it
looks delightful, which is nice because it is did you
know next week Arran is the start of spring football
for the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
I'm assuming they'll be outdoors.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
They don't have an indoor facility open yet, so yes,
we will be out doors all fifteen practices, I believe,
unless and I guess if necessary, they might be able
to head down to the Bengals facility the Bubble if
the weather gets bad. But as it stands, yeah, we
will be at Nippert Stadium. The only thing I don't
(39:17):
like about that, Darren, when they have the indoor facility,
generally those practices are in the morning, so by like noon,
you're done. They are doing because it's in outdoors, they'll
do those practices in the afternoon, much more of a
chance that the web, you know, it's warmed up and
(39:39):
a little bit more suitable conditions to practice outdoors. But
then practice starts at three. You get done, five, get
out of there after interviews and stuff by six. We
usually start our podcast network stuff at like eight. It
just it's a time crunch to get everything done, get
the practice report up and all that good stuff. But Taren,
(40:00):
are you a black Raspberry chip guy?
Speaker 8 (40:04):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (40:04):
No, no, I just saw that Graters is from now
through the end of the month. They're doing black raspberry
chip donuts. I'm a donut guy. I like donuts in
the morning. Not a lot, but not frequently, but every
now and then, stop at a bakery the night the
day before and you get some donuts for the morning.
(40:25):
I did that today. I had a cheese Danish. I
love a cheese Danish. Ooh, did you see the picture
that Jeff sent me from Goodyear?
Speaker 3 (40:34):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
It was a picture of the concession stand. Thirteen dollars
for a cheese cony, ah, singular cheese cony. Did they
hand deliver the chili from Skyline to Arizona? That seems
excessive for a hot dog with some chili and cheese.
(40:57):
I'm just saying I love Skyline. Thirteen dollars for a
cheese cony. Is that's an expensive cheese cony? Like I said,
no Reds today. That is rained out, canceled, not postponed.
There will not be a makeup date between the Reds
(41:17):
and the San Francisco Giants, so what can you do there?
They will be back in action. A lot of things
happening at the same time, tomorrow, Tarran, Is it all
hands on deck here in the in the Death Star tomorrow?
Speaker 3 (41:33):
Yeah? I mean it would be pretty much fool staff
here tomorrow because you.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Have the Bearcats at Oklahoma State at three o'clock. Then
you have the Reds and Diamondbacks at three oh five,
and Xavier Providence at four.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
My shift?
Speaker 2 (41:49):
When does FC play? Do they play tomorrow?
Speaker 3 (41:52):
They play tomorrow at seven thirty?
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Okay, so at least that'll be clear of all they play.
They're at home hosting Toronto tomorrow at seven thirty. At
least that'll be a little bit clear of the three
games at once. Are you guys having like a party
up here? Will there be a bartender drink specials? What
happens on a Saturday when nobody's here but the producers
(42:15):
running games? What's that like, Bob? Is everybody old enough
to do that?
Speaker 4 (42:23):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Yes, okay officially yes? Now now yeah, now that yeah, okay.
I let's get out to the phones real quick. Dick
and Dayton. We couldn't get to in the last hour,
so we'll get you in here. Dick, how's it going,
my friend? It's been a while.
Speaker 14 (42:39):
Why are you being chit?
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I'm doing pretty good. Today is a rough day, Dick.
It is my late wife, Kelly's birthday. She would have
been forty seven today.
Speaker 14 (42:47):
So that's cool. Hey, I guess what I did today?
I went to Sinclair And guess who I saw today?
Speaker 3 (42:54):
Who did you see?
Speaker 14 (42:55):
Some of the legends of of Cincinnati based Oh, Hal McCoy. Yeah,
And we had twenty people, and he was talking about
the red you know, like Johnny Bench and you know,
Pete Rose and Barry Larkin and uh, he's done these
(43:15):
Uh he's been the beat reporter down here for almost
thirty five years. And he's saying it's just a wonderful
thing to be you know, he traveled so much with
him and I sort of he gave me a little autograph.
He had a book he was going to give me,
but he was telling me. I told him everybody in
that room they think the Reds are gonna do good
(43:37):
this year, Chad, I hope.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
So we need the Reds to carry us through summer, Dick.
Speaker 14 (43:44):
Yes, we do. And uh, he have you ever you
know what I'm talking about. Yeah, he's he's read several books,
you know, he's he's pretty good. And everybody was there
and uh, I was mentioning to him that I thought,
you know, I was a big fan. It's nice to
hear Tom brannanman back, you know, yeah, it's kind of nice.
(44:06):
It's pretty good. But yeah, I enjoyed myself and like
I say, Jed, I think they're going to do good
this year.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
I appreciate it. Dick, thank you, bye bye, have a
good one. Always good to hear from Dick and Deane.
Let's get to the west Miller stuff. We will be
joined by Jeff carr Hear in about twenty minutes to
have some Reds conversation. But Jason Williams had an article
(44:35):
in the Inquiry today. John Cunningham gave a very brief quote,
the west Miller will be back for the twenty twenty
five twenty sixth season, the third season in the Big
twelve for Cincinnati. I don't know that it had to
be done. I don't know. Look, there's there's one thing
(44:57):
fans won. Everybody fired. That's how fandom works in twenty
twenty five. Everybody's got a voice, everybody's got a social
media account, and you would rather have fans be passionate
about their teams and their team's performance than be apathetic.
That's sports in twenty twenty five. Look, this town wanted
(45:21):
Dusty Baker fired when Dusty was having a great run.
They wanted mc cronin let go when mc cronin had
been to nine and CAA tournaments. They've wanted Zach Taylor
fired before, during, and after taking the team to a
super Bowl in an AFC Championship. Wes Miller has not
reached those levels. So the fans are gonna be unhappy
(45:43):
because this year the expectations were heightened. This was a
team I thought would win around twelve Big Twelve games.
I thought where they were ranked in the Big Twelve
coming into the season was probably about right six seven eight.
You know, I thought the group of Houston, Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas,
(46:05):
and Arizona were better than Cincinnati. Coming into the season,
I thought Cincinnati was in a group with BYU, Texas Tech,
potentially Kansas State. They haven't lived up to expectations, So
fans are going to be angry, and rightfully so. As
I talked about in the open, fans spend their money
(46:25):
on the product, so they are financially invested in seeing
a winner. That's how it should be. This is a
team that through Wes's first three years, maybe didn't reach
the level of getting back to the tournament that everybody
(46:46):
and associates with UC basketball. But he took over a
bad situation and had steadily built up the program to
the point that there was a ton of excitement for
this year. Rightfully, so they didn't meet the expectations, and
so there's gonna be reaction to that, But I don't
(47:09):
think that reaction instantly requires a statement from management. If
Cincinnati was two and sixteen or two like three and
seventeen in the Big Twelve, then yeah, if you're going
to back your coach and say we feel like things
(47:31):
went wrong this year or whatever, like Okay, I don't
think this team is at a point. They were in
the bubble conversation until Wednesday. They were very much in
the conversation to make the NCAA tournament until Wednesday. At
that point, had they still not quite performed up to
the level that was expected of them, Yes, but they
were in the conversation to make the tournament. Then Wednesday happened.
(47:57):
They were dreadful on Wednesday, and everybody is upset, But
I don't think it was to the point that there
needed to be a statement from the athletic department that
Wes was coming back. I think everybody knew that Wes
was coming back. People might not have been happy with it,
but everybody knew Wes was going to get next year.
(48:22):
And I think a lot of that lies in if
I was in that chair, if I was John Cunningham,
I would have said this. There was an there was
an understanding because Wes was remember hired in the American
Athletic Conference, there was an understanding that when we were
(48:43):
making the move to the Big Twelve, that Wes was
going to get a little extra rope to get this
thing up and running in what at the time was
the best basketball conference in America. This year, it's right there,
number two, number three, depending on what metric you look
at the SEC that's having a historic year, but the
(49:04):
Big Twelve is still very very good. If you're going
to put that out there, if you're going to make
that statement, I think it needs to be a little
bit more than just Wes is going to be back
next year. I think you need to explain to the
fan base. You need to let the fan base have
(49:26):
a better inside vision that aligns with what the athletic
director is thinking, which was, we've only been in this
league for two years. We have not risen to the
level that we expect to be at in this league,
and twenty twenty four to twenty five was a disappointing season.
(49:46):
But our long term vision is still that Wes Miller
can get us where we think Cincinnati basketball deserves to be.
Just saying he's coming back and shutting it down at that,
I think you leave a lot of room for people
to still be angry because at least if you gave
a little insight, they're still going to be mad, but
(50:08):
they're going to have an understanding of where your thought
process is, where the belief is on what needs to
be done going forward, and then if those goals aren't
accomplished in the next season, then there's going to be
(50:29):
a different tone because I think in this league, making
the adjustment two years, finishing in you know roughly the
middle third of the conference is not where you want
to be, but it's not a disaster, but it has
(50:50):
to get better. Because now you've gone to all these venues,
you coached against all these coaches, You've had a chance
to see what roster construction and style of play and
expectations are going to be night in and night out
in this league. I think the right move is to
give Wess a year three. But I think you're not
(51:12):
doing any favors by just a blanket. He will be back.
I guess if you're Wes, it's better than a blanket.
He won't be back. And you can agree with that,
you can disagree with that. That's perfectly fine. But I
don't think you gave the fan base enough context as
to why, because I think fans look at it and say, okay,
(51:36):
this is year four.
Speaker 8 (51:38):
But my.
Speaker 2 (51:40):
Understanding of it is the administration looks at it as
year two, the end of year two in the Big Twelve,
because that is a massive jump competing in the American
Athletic Conference to competing in the Big Twelve. You can't
get players in the American that make you a relevant
(52:01):
team in the Big Twelve, not enough of them at least.
So that's kind of my thought process on what we
saw happen today in the athletic department. Agree, disagree, Phone
lines are open, Let's talk about it. Let's take a break. Five, one, three, seven, four, nine,

Speaker 2 (53:19):
That was mean. That was ice Cube talking to me.
If you're wondering, Yeah, yay, yeah, I talk back. Was
so turning up the Miss Parker, Miss Parker.
Speaker 6 (53:36):
Short.
Speaker 3 (53:38):
Did you hear that last Friday has been confirmed?
Speaker 2 (53:41):
Really?
Speaker 3 (53:42):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (53:43):
Is Chris gonna be in it?
Speaker 3 (53:45):
According to Mikes, Yes, Chris Tucker will be back in.
Speaker 2 (53:48):
I mean, that's the only way you're probably gonna get
me in is is if Smokey's back what's Smoky at
like forty five years old? I can't wait for that.
What's what's what is Smoky like? If forty five years old?
Fifty years old? Maybe because that movie's old, Arran.
Speaker 3 (54:04):
It's old, Yeah, ninety five, it's old, like Smokey's probably
like getting out of rehab.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
Well, here's the thing. They were like what probably right
around high school age then just a little over.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
I was a senior in high school in ninety five.
I'm coming up next year. Tarran is my thirty year reunion.
How did this happen? I don't understand it, but I'm
excited for that. I will check out Last Friday as
long as Chris Tucker is in it. Not anything against
(54:43):
ice Cube. I just think you need both of them.
The other Fridays were okay, they were fine. I mean,
they were all right, but it just didn't have the
magic of the first and a lot of that was
because Smokey was hilarious. We've got Jeff ff Carr coming
up in about five seven minutes. The Reds have announced
(55:05):
that Hunter Green will start opening day. They have also
put out there that Nicolodolo, Nick Martinez, and Brady Singer
along with Green will make up four fifths of the
starting rotation and that the final spot will continue to
be competed for in goodyear. And I think that's a
(55:30):
rotation that can win games. I like this bullpen. I
finally come around after two years of you know, saying
I see better than I hear show me and the
bullpen being pretty good. I don't know that they're going
to be an elite bullpen, but I think it's a
bullpen that is not going to put you in situations
(55:51):
where you know, the season becomes a disaster because you
can't hold leads or they can't. You know, they walk guys,
and they they just put everybody in a bad situation.
I like the bullpen. I like where they're going with
the starting rotation. I like these top four guys. I
(56:12):
think night in and night out when that's your four,
and then you add being you know Abbat or Ashcraft
or you know a couple others that are that are vying,
but I think it'll probably be one of those two.
I think you can go in night in and night
out and feel like you've got a chance to win
a game no matter who is on the mound against you.
(56:37):
The obvious question for me and probably for you too.
Can Lodola stay healthy? Can we see him get to
a point where he throws one hundred and fifty innings
twenty five starts one hundred and fifty innings, something along
those lines. And then is Martinez, you know, for that
(57:01):
full time role, not as a back and forth guy,
not as a fill in guy, you know, not for
the old heads, not not the Joe Price role that
the Reds had in the eighties. Or sometimes he starts,
sometimes he's in the pen, like starter Nick Martinez major
League Baseball starter for a good team. I think Singer
(57:24):
is what you need in terms of a guy that
can eat innings, a guy that you know gives you
a little bit of a veteran presence. Now you figure
out who's your fifth and what does your depth look
like behind them? How quickly do you get Ret Louder
(57:47):
up to speed? Where is Carson Spyers at is Chase
Burns a guy that's going to be able to help
you this year coming out of college? But if those
are your top four, I think you have a guy
that can contend for a cy young and Hunter Green
doesn't mean he's gonna win it. But I think he
(58:09):
can be one of the better pitchers in the National League,
And then you have guys slotted behind them that have
either shown the ability to get it done or have
the ability to take that next step and be consistent
major league starters. The problem, the only problem I really see,
(58:32):
is if Lodolo can't stay on the field, can't stay
on the mound, who is your number two? Because I
don't think Martinez or Singer are number two starters. I
think they're both probably more like quality number fours. But
you can survive with two quality fourth starters. You've got
(58:57):
a one, do you have two? And I think a
lot of that comes down to will Nick Lodolo be
able to remain healthy on the mound and effective? Just
take a break. JEFFF. Car coming up after this Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
Maybe Terring, maybe Terring can play the gas base again.
It was third base. I know it was third base. Yes,
did you do your homework on third base? You listen
to a little Brooklyn Queens. I didn't figure you did.
Speaker 6 (01:00:55):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Hunter Green named the opening day starter, not of surprise,
but good to get this out of the way and
give Hunter that that nudge that you're our guy and
you're our number one going forward.
Speaker 4 (01:01:11):
Yeah, especially after last year where it was a challenge
right where they said it's Frankie Montas and this is
seen as a challenge to Hunter Green to earn it.
He's got to earn it, and he did. He pitched
amazing in twenty twenty four, and quite frankly, had he
not gotten hurt there in August, he would have been
(01:01:31):
much higher up in the cy Young voting. I think
top three would have been what we would have talked
about instead of where he finished. But it's all because
he really honed in his top two pitches, the fastball
and the slider, and the addition of the splitter. The
splitter really gave him that third pitch that has a
different profile than the other two pitches and he is
(01:01:54):
able to throw it against lefties into a really good
job of that and at the very least induced week comet,
but he did a pretty decent job of getting a
swing and miss with that as well. So I think
that you know, this early on in camp, getting that
announcement and really getting the top four of the rotation,
we're gonna get to that. So yeah, I think I
(01:02:14):
think it is a very good thing and very well
deserved from Hunter Green.
Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
Let's let's move to Nick Loodola, who I think, would
you agree is slotted in as the number two in
this rotation, because that is my ultimate biggest concern with
this rotation going into the season. It's not that can
Nick Lidolo become a number two? It's the can't he
stay healthy enough? Because I think that is if you
(01:02:40):
have a one having a two like it's critical so
that you have that one two punch so you can
string together wins more often than not. And I think
Lodola has the stuff. The question I have is can
he be one hundred and fifty inning guy in that
number two roll? Is that fair?
Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (01:03:02):
One?
Speaker 4 (01:03:03):
I mean before June twenty third, whenever he had the
blister issue last year, he was pitching as well as
Hunter Green was. His era was in the twos and
he had an amazing strikeout to walk ratio and all
that stuff, and then the blister happens and everything falls apart.
He goes from a two era to a seven ra
not as many strikeouts and more walks, and so you wonder, okay,
(01:03:28):
is this behind him? Well, so far in camp it is,
and that is a very encouraging sign. But with Nicolodolo,
it's not the recurring stuff, like the same thing happening
over and over again. It's all right, now it's a leg,
Now it's a blister, Now it's a Now it's an
arm or something like that, Like is it going to
be this way for his entire career? Because I'm one
(01:03:50):
hundred percent with you, you have to cap your expectations.
If you're talking about a dude that you only get
like eighty to ninety to one hundred innings out.
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Of would you agree with me saying and Martinez are
the other two guys that have been named. I think
both of them are probably like really good number fours,
But I think you can live with that as long
as both of them are good. That gives you guys
that can eat innings, guys that you know are pretty reliable.
(01:04:18):
They may not be like seven scoreless inning guys, but
I think most of the time you can count on
those two for six innings three or less runs, and
that's how you build a good rotation.
Speaker 4 (01:04:32):
I'm thinking of like a Brons and Arroyo type dude,
like somebody you can give the ball to every fifth day,
you know, he's going to be there and he's going
to give you exactly what you can rely on, and
he's not gonna blow up. There's not gonna be like
a lot of games where all of a sudden you're
down five runs in the second inning or something like that.
And I think that's what these two guys offered. Neither
(01:04:53):
one of them are going to push Hunter Green for
opening day starts in the future. And of course Nick
Martinez has just saigned through this year, so who knows
how many more years he has in a Red's uniform.
But I do like the profile of both guys where
they aren't the type that gets a lot of swing
and missus. They're the type that pitches efficiently, pitches the contact,
(01:05:13):
get a lot of outs and stuff like that. The
only thing I worry about with Singer is that he
gets a lot of outs through the air, and that's
gonna have to be something that they work on. I'm
sure that's something that the moment he was acquired, Derek
Johnson had a plan for it, but a lot to
see exactly how that comes through during the season.
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Who gets number five abbot for me?
Speaker 4 (01:05:34):
Yeah, for me, it's habit and I think that by
the time they need a fifth starter, he's gonna be
ready to go, because obviously right now he hasn't pitched
in the game, but they've said that he is healthy.
His bullpen in his live batting practices have gone well,
so once we start seeing him in games and stuff,
it's going to become very evident, very quickly that he's
(01:05:55):
the number five guy. I think Graham Ashcraft is best
suit for the bullpen. I think Carson Spy is good
pitching depth, but I don't think either one of them
eclipsed Andrew Rabbit so long as Abbot's one hundred percent healthy,
and I think he will be, because I mean, you know,
with the off day after Opening Day, you could conceivably
pitch Hunter Green in the fifth game of the season
(01:06:16):
and reset your rotation that way, and then you won't
need your number five guy till about the ninth or
tenth game, and by then Andrew Rabbit should be ready
to go.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
I kind of would like to have a fifth starter
there just to buy an extra like day, you know
what I mean, like early in the season.
Speaker 4 (01:06:32):
And I think that's why they kept Ashcraft stretched out
so that he could do that in case abbot isn't
ready to go, and I think that that was that
was ultimately the smartest thing he's still for me, he
still ends up in the bullpen by the end of
the year. He's definitely gonna make some starts. I kind
of think of it like what Nick Martinez did last
(01:06:52):
year before August, and I think that's kind of the
role we're gonna see Ashcraft in this year.
Speaker 2 (01:06:59):
How excited should I be that Ellie looks incredible in spring,
because you'd have to temper your expectations in the spring, Jeff,
that's what we tell ourselves. But he looks like he's
awesome already.
Speaker 4 (01:07:13):
I'm gonna tell you that the excitement has nothing to
do with the numbers. Although the numbers are pretty nice.
Nineteen sixty three ops, we'll take that right, five hundred
batting average will take that too. But the numbers, while
they're nice, it's all about what's just see. The mechanics
that he has a swing is a little bit different.
The changes that he has employed are super repeatable and
(01:07:35):
super easy. This isn't something where it's like, well, he's
just getting really lucky, Like his batmup is super high
and we're waiting to see the other shoe drop like
he has changed the whole kind of like kickstep tries.
Time the pitch it's much shorter and much more balanced,
and he himself looks much more balanced in the box.
(01:07:57):
There's a lot of hits that he's gotten in the
spring that the pitch gets deeper into the strike zone
and he's able to drive it to the other field
because he's able to see it better. And I think
that that, more than anything, is going to be something
that he can fall back on when we get to
June and July when you're starting to feel that fatigue
as an everyday player. But on the other side of
the spectrum, Chad is the patience. He had it at
(01:08:19):
bat the other day where he took a five pitch walk.
I don't remember the last time or any time that
he kept his bat on his shoulder for five straight pitches.
I think that we are going to see Ellie take
that next step. I'm one hundred percent all in on him.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
I think for this team to reach its goals, Matt
McClain needs to be They've made the Batman and Robin joke,
but Matt McLain needs to be like one Bee. We
saw him his rookie year. Just his presence at the plate,
like his presence in the lineup made everything different. We
didn't see him at all last year. How have you
(01:08:56):
felt Matt McLain has looked this spring?
Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
He looked healthy, and he's looked like it's it's you know,
there's nothing that he is laboring through in order to play.
That was my biggest worrying And I remember last year,
toward the end of the season, there were reports that
he could come back rehab, maybe be in the like
the last month of the season. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Don't jeopardize his future if he's only going to be
playing at you know, less than one hundred percent. It's
(01:09:22):
clear he's one hundred percent right now and he's not
dealing with any of the after effects of the shoulder surgery.
And he looks great at the plate, looks great in
the field, great on the base paths, with no limitations whatsoever.
And that's been the only question that I had of
him this spring. I mean, I know, like in the
Arizona Fall League, he was hitting for a lot of power,
but we continue to see that here in spring training
(01:09:43):
as well. I'm buying the fact that we're going to
see the Matt McLean we saw in twenty twenty three.
I don't necessarily know that he's gonna have an OPS
over nine hundred for an entire season, but around eight
fifty sure, And that's the guy that flopped in right
there in the one two punch with Ellie.
Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
Do we know anything more about Spencer Steere? Have we
heard anything else to give us an indication of how
that is going getting him? Because I just I look
at a situation and go, if this guy wasn't feeling
great in October and he shows back up in February
and still doesn't feel great, I have a little bit
of trepidation about giving him a week off and then
(01:10:23):
he's gonna be fine.
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
Yeah. No updates currently, And for me, I kind of
chocked it up whenever I heard about the Quartzone shot,
kind of chocked it up that he's going to begin
the season on the injured list. I think that he
probably misses a couple of weeks to begin the season,
but that's so that he can come back one hundred
percent ready to go. Because all of the reports and
even what he was saying himself in the interview in
(01:10:48):
the aftermath of the court Zone shot, he was saying
things like, you know, I had developed some bad habits.
I was, you know, coping with the injury, working around
the injury just in order to play lash year. And
that's not something that's sustainable because he's just going to
continue to have to cope and his body and his
muscles around the injury will continue to develop bad habits.
(01:11:11):
So they've got to fix that, and I think that
that's what they believe the cortizone shot is going to do.
But I think we will not see him on the
active roster on opening day, which kind of opens up
a final bench spot there for a public. Guys that
are intriguing in camp. At the very least, Trevino Lucks Hayes.
These the new talent infused into the roster. What have
(01:11:36):
things been like for them as we get to what
tomorrow is the two week point of spring training or
at least the games, I feel like, yeah, yeah, I
feel like Hayes can be the everyday fielder.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
He starty home runs, right, that's what you said.
Speaker 4 (01:11:53):
I don't know about that, but I definitely think he's
going to be a viable everyday left fielders, especially in
the field as well with his arm, and you're play
in his left field in Great American Ballpark, you don't
have to have a lot of range, but if you
have a good arm, you can make a lot of
good plays. And that's what the Reds have really missed
over the last few years. They've just not had that
(01:12:13):
outfielder that you know, causes an opposing base runner to
think twice before they go the extra base. And I
think that Austin Hayes is going to provide that. Jose
Travigno for me is a clear upgrade over Luke Maylee
and it may open up the ability for Tyler Stevenson
to DH a little bit more. We talked with him
(01:12:34):
on the podcast last year about the fact that he
would catch one hundred and forty games if they would
let him. But I think what's best for him is
that he catches a little bit less than what he
ended up catching last year and DH some more. And
I think that Jose Travino opens that up a lot.
His fielding is so good and how he handles a
pitching staff is going to just flow seamlessly from Luke
(01:12:56):
Melee to him. That I'm not worried about any sort
of drop off whenever Tyler Stevenson is not behind the place.
Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
Finally, bullpen, anybody catching your eye, Anybody that maybe you
didn't expect that's flashing, Maybe somebody you did expect that's
struggling a little bit. I kind of don't even really
at this point, they've earned my trust in the bullpen.
I have not focused on them a whole lot because
I believe that they have a system in place that
(01:13:24):
they will have a good pen. Am I wrong?
Speaker 4 (01:13:26):
Yeah? They No, You're I'm in total agreeance with you
there because I feel like the group that they have
set up, so long as they continue to stay healthy,
is very solid group. I mean, we're talking about Graham Ashcraft.
If he's not in the rotation, I think he's in
the bullpen. I don't think he gets sent to Louisville
or anything like that. And if he's in the bullpen,
the bullpen's full because you've got Alexis Ds, Taylor Rodgers,
(01:13:49):
you got Scott Barlow and Sam Maul, Brent Suter and
Emilio Pigan, and then you've got Tony Santion and Graham
Ashcraft kind of working up the back into that spot.
I've been really happy with what I've seen from most
of the guys so far. One thing that's kind of
intrigued me is that Taylor Rodgers has been clean in
every inning that he's pitched. Now, we can point back
(01:14:12):
to a couple of years ago whenever a mere Garrett
struck out every matter he faced, and we know how
that ended up in the regular season. But I think
that this is for real with Taylor Rodgers. He's a
guy that could push Das and maybe even take over
d As a spot if Daz starts slow to become
the closer of this team. This team really has a
ton of experience in the bullpen, and I think that,
(01:14:35):
more than anything, should really have people excited about what
this season could be.
Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
Brother, I appreciate it. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy
those seventy degree days next week.
Speaker 4 (01:14:45):
Absolutely, I can't wait. I'm so tired of wearing a
heavy coach.

chip donut, you wouldn't you wouldn't take it tearing, honestly, No, really,
you don't like it that much. I mean I don't.
It's not like my everybody raves about it. I've tried it.
It's okay, Like I don't love the taste of raspberry.
(01:16:41):
I guess are you in the same boat pretty much?
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
Yeah? Really when it comes to donuts, I'm just simple.
Give me just a regular glaze. I'm good.
Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Yeah, it's not a not a powdered Nah, really, I like,
I like a pretty good powdered I glazed with chocolate
frosting is probably like my like my favorite, not like
a thick you know, but like, give me a little
chocolate if I if I'm gonna have like a sugary doughnut,
I might as well just have some chocolate with it too.
(01:17:12):
There's a place up in uh An, Indiana, Taran that's
like uh it's right by the pacers training facility, which
is where they do a lot of the Aau stuff,
And they have a long chocolate you know, just the
long donut with the chocolate on top that is stuffed
on the inside with peanut butter fluff.
Speaker 3 (01:17:33):
Yeah, that might be a little too much for me.
Speaker 2 (01:17:35):
It's a lot. It is so good, like the first
couple bites of it, but getting to the end of
that thing is like, I don't know if I can
do this. You you almost have to like knowingly cut
it in half and like save the other half for tomorrow.
But it's it's it's delicious. It's just very rich, very rich.
(01:17:59):
You know, are you don't like Danish, the cheese Danish?
I like a good cheese Danish. Yeah, that's like the
old man in me right, Like that's an old man
thing you buy at the bakery, cheese Danish.
Speaker 3 (01:18:11):
The only time I get this, as if my mom
was so like a Danish.
Speaker 2 (01:18:14):
You're not making me feel any better about myself, Teren,
just take a break. Our number three coming up, Cincinnati's

(01:19:01):
I get next week off from here, Tarran, you do.
I've been here a lot lately, like I feel like
I work here almost just filling out my timesheet. Last night,
I was like, dang, do I have a job, Like,
do I have a like an office job now?
Speaker 3 (01:19:19):
And hopefully if the Missouri Tigers can take care of
business this weekend, I'll have an off day on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
On Thursday, Thursday, yeah, and then if you're you know,
if you're gonna be driving around, like if you're going
bar hopping for the first weekend of the first two
days of the NCAA tournament, Tarran and I will be
here that Thursday and Friday. This is our our normal routine.
Mo gets to go have fun and Tarran and I
(01:19:48):
get to sit here and flip channels in the studio,
keeping up with games. It's all right, there's worse. I
could have a real job. It's okay, tearing. So Tuesday
when I was here, right, I really enjoy Snickers peanut
butter bars, Okay. And they come like the king size
(01:20:11):
when they come in like four little pieces inside the container, right, Okay,
So I had two of them during the show. Lit'll
pick me up a little you know, little chocolate burst,
little sugar burst during the show. And I put two
of them in the fridge and I was gonna get
them when I went home, and I forgot. I went
(01:20:32):
back during that break and instead of taking just stealing
my two peanut butter Snickers peanut butter bars, they just
took one and put the other one back. Is that
worse here?
Speaker 6 (01:20:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:20:50):
In this refrigerator here, somebody went in there and they
took one piece of a Snicker's peanut butter bar and
left me one.
Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
Yeah, I learned a long time ago. I'd never leased
stuff here.
Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
I didn't intend to. I intended to grab it. Like
when I left and we got done and I, you know,
I come and talk to you for a minute before
I leave, and there's a couple of people here and
we were all chatting, and then I just kind of
forgot about it and walked out. And then during that break,
I was like, oh, dang, I just remembered I got
those two Snickers peanut butter bars in there. Only one left.
(01:21:37):
People are a trip man, Like, you know it's not yours.
You did not buy that Snicker's peanut butter bar, and
you felt bad about it because you left one. You
knew you were wrong, but you still took one anyway.
You know what I blamed this on, Taran was that
not having a vending machine.
Speaker 3 (01:22:01):
I agree, I missed that have vent a machine.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
If there was a vending machine, they wouldn't have gone
to the fridge thinking, man, maybe there's something in here
for me to snack on, and then they snacked on
half of my unbelievable Let's go to the phone. Steve
wants to talk some UC basketball. What's up, Steve? Did
you steal my Snickers peanut butter bar?
Speaker 15 (01:22:24):
No?
Speaker 9 (01:22:25):
I am not a Snickers fan, so I'm innocent.
Speaker 2 (01:22:28):
I don't love Snickers regular Snickers, but the peanut butter
ones for me are delicious. Well, what's going on?
Speaker 6 (01:22:39):
Man? Well?
Speaker 18 (01:22:41):
I caught most of what you were saying about West
Miller and them sticking with him for another year, and
I I take issue with your point about that they've
only been in the league two years and blah blah.
Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
It's not my point, Steve, it's how the administration sees it.
It's what you know, what the administration has told West
about when they were entering the league that they are
going to see it as this is kind of your
own individual thing, and we're not gonna jump ship early
in this thing. We're gonna stick with you and give
(01:23:17):
you a chance to grow into competing in the Big twelve.
Speaker 18 (01:23:21):
Okay, then I blame the administration. But what about you know,
three of the four top teams in the Big twelve
right now, we're not in the Big twelve last year?
Speaker 2 (01:23:30):
Okay, where were they?
Speaker 18 (01:23:32):
Well, Houston's one of them, obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
Correct, they're a top three program in the country right now.
They are an outlier right.
Speaker 18 (01:23:39):
Now, yes, right now, but they were in the American
They were.
Speaker 2 (01:23:42):
A top three or four program in the country their
last two years in the American yep.
Speaker 18 (01:23:46):
Brigham Young is fourth in the Big twelve. At Big twelve, yep,
Arizona is third. Now they were in a power conference.
Speaker 2 (01:23:55):
And Arizona's a blue blood, a blue blood, the bluest
of blue bloots.
Speaker 18 (01:24:01):
The last three in the Big twelve right now are
Oaks State, Arizona State, and they were in power conferences.
Speaker 2 (01:24:11):
Yeah, they don't have any money, well, Arizona State does.
Like that's I'm curious if Bobby Hurley is going to
get canned because Arizona State spent a bunch of money
and have gotten nothing for their expense. Now BYU, Steve,
you know the situation at BYU, right, They are a
national brand. They have billions of dollars at their disposal
(01:24:36):
through their alumni base.
Speaker 9 (01:24:38):
Is the national brand in basketball more than Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (01:24:42):
I'm saying Brigham Young as a university is a national brand.
And as a result, they have billionaire donors. They have
a billionaire donor that also owns the Utah Jazz that
is funneling millions and millions and millions of dollars into
BYU ban basketball. They just landed the number one prospect
in the country in this recruiting class. They're paying him.
Speaker 9 (01:25:05):
They are not a traditional basketball power.
Speaker 4 (01:25:08):
Not like you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:09):
They have nil money, Steve. That they have double, almost
triple what you see spent in nil this year. They
have a lottery pick on their roster that they bought
in yegor demo.
Speaker 18 (01:25:23):
Then maybe you see made a mistake when they jumped
to the Big twelve.
Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
If they can't compete, you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:28):
Think there doesn't Steve, this is what drives me crazy
about this whole process. You think it wasn't going to
take time. Where you see was if you see what
have had? You know Mick Cronin or Bob Huggins. They
screwed up the entrance into the Big East because they
got rid of Huggins right as they entered, and it
took them five years to recover. They screwed up the
(01:25:49):
situation with Mick Cronin. They put their basketball program in
disarray and then entered the Big Twelve just as they
were getting it stabilized. Calvin Samson was at Huge In
for nine years before they got into the Big Twelve.
Speaker 9 (01:26:04):
What makes you think it's gonna recover.
Speaker 2 (01:26:06):
I don't know if it's going to recover, Steed, I
don't know if it's going to recover. I don't have
a crystal ball. I know the way that the sport
is intended to be structured going forward with revenue share,
people will be on a more level playing field. Will
there still be teams that have an advantage, Yes, it
(01:26:27):
will be very interesting. The thing to watch in college
sports now that they are going to revenue share is
that part of that bill that's going through or the
agreement the settlement in the lawsuit is that they are
going to try to make NIL a more market value
(01:26:51):
enterprise what it was supposed to be. When NIL was introduced,
NIL quickly became pay for play because they couldn't stop it.
What they are going to try to do is, if
you do an advertisement for a car dealership that's worth
ten thousand dollars, the school's not going to be able
to pay you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to
do that advertisement. They're not going to be able to
(01:27:13):
use NIL. If this holds, I do have some doubts
because I think it will get challenged in court. I'm
very interested to see when it does. If the court
says there is no such thing as market value, because
if a car dealership in Tuscaloosa wants to pay their
quarterback two million dollars, they can do that because that
(01:27:35):
may be their value on having that guy endorse their
car dealership. I'm but if this thing does finally find
a common ground, then I think you're in a much
better situation. If not, Cincinnati's never been a place that
has money, but they've been a place that's been able
to figure it out. It just hasn't happened instantaneously. It
(01:27:59):
took four years before they really got footing in football.
Year three they started to build up momentum. Then year four,
Brian Kelly had things going and they picked up momentum.
It was year five under mc cronin so year six
because Andy Kennedy's first year before basketball got traction in
(01:28:22):
the Big East. It did not happen overnight in any
of these there's one true peer, do you see that
is doing. Houston is in that same boat if you
look at their football program, what they're doing. They just
had the ball rolling in basketball at a fortunate time
entering into this league, and I think Calvin Sampson is
(01:28:42):
an elite coach. But UCF and Cincinnati are in the
same boat, and both of them are struggling at about
the same level making this adjustment because they don't have
the financial wherewithal yet to be where everybody else in
the league is. You know, they don't get their first
(01:29:02):
full share check from the Big Twelve until July one,
twenty twenty six. That's a big difference. Everybody else is
cashing forty to fifty million dollar checks. Cincinnati's cashing eighteen.
That plays a factor.
Speaker 19 (01:29:20):
Steve, I don't disagree with you, but I guess I
don't see Wes Miller doing anything on the recruiting or
other front.
Speaker 9 (01:29:31):
And I guess you're gonna say, well, that's nil.
Speaker 2 (01:29:34):
No, they've done good on the recruiting front. He just
hasn't gotten the results where everybody expects them to be yet.
And they've got a five star guard come a five
star wing coming in. They've got a high four star
point guard coming in.
Speaker 18 (01:29:49):
Okay, Well, I guess the operative order in what you
said is yet they.
Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
Haven't and if he doesn't next year, he'll probably get fired.
Speaker 4 (01:29:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
I mean, I I just think it takes a little
bit more. I know it's emotional as a fan because
they're not meeting expectations right now, Steve, I get that,
But that doesn't instantly mean it's time to jump ship.
Is that fair?
Speaker 18 (01:30:15):
Well, I guess it. Jumping ship is always a question of, yeah,
but what can I get in his place? And I
certainly don't know the answer to that.
Speaker 2 (01:30:24):
They don't have a whole lot of money right now, Steve,
so they're not going out and getting you know, a
high level coach to come in. It would probably be
something of similar volition where they would go get a
guy that's an up and comer, and then he would
have to adjust to winning in the Big twelve, and
then you're starting.
Speaker 9 (01:30:42):
Over like Pat Kelsey maybe.
Speaker 4 (01:30:45):
I mean, how do we miss out.
Speaker 2 (01:30:48):
On that because he went to Xavier? Steve, you're hiring
a musketeer to run the Bearcats basketball program.
Speaker 9 (01:30:55):
If he was the guy that he is at Louisville, why.
Speaker 2 (01:30:58):
Not are you gonna give him ten million in nil
like Louisville? Hass Yeah, you you're where. I mean, Cincinnati
had four. Where's the other six coming from?
Speaker 9 (01:31:11):
I think you have to the finance.
Speaker 18 (01:31:13):
People have to be people who believe in the program,
and right now, I don't see.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
It, Steve, this has always been a UC's never had
the money, though they found a way to do more
with less throughout the history of UC athletics. But it's
not When you have the money, the answer is easier.
You just throw money at the problem. When you don't
have the money, it's not as easy. It takes a
little bit more strategy to get there in that situation. Right,
(01:31:39):
It's just like in life.
Speaker 18 (01:31:41):
Bob Bob Huggins did it and it wasn't about money.
Speaker 2 (01:31:44):
Bob Huggins was in the Great Midwest and Conference USA
beating the crap out of everybody. Those teams aren't in
the Big twelve.
Speaker 9 (01:31:52):
Yeah, but they know he won in the tournament too barely.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
He won early in his career in the tournament, and
then they haven't. They've made one Sweet sixteen and twenty
five years. You know, Kenya Martin never advanced past the
second round of the tournament. Nineteen ninety six was the
last Elite Eight he played three years before he got hurt.
Speaker 4 (01:32:12):
Steve, Yeah, they've been to two Sweet sixteen since nineteen
ninety six.
Speaker 9 (01:32:20):
Well, you're you're convincing me I need a new favorite team.
Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
I'm convincing you that it's not as simple as you
just because we all want them to do well, we
all want them to win, but it's been a challenge here. Yep,
that's all. I appreciate the call. I'm not trying to
be standoffish about it. I just I think I think
we get emotional in wanting them to win, and I
think the optimism coming into this year that this was
(01:32:47):
going to be the year that they turned the corner
has everybody extra pissed off right now because it didn't happen,
right right, You know, I get it. If you don't,
don't think Wes is the guy. I understand that he
hasn't shown a lot to anybody through his fourth season.
They're through almost the end of his fourth season. He
hasn't shown anything to give anybody that great deal of confidence.
(01:33:10):
Yet that's fully understandable the way the university sees it.
He's gonna get at least one more year. So at
this point, you hope he learned from the things that
he has experienced these first year two years in the
Big twelve and that he can apply them next year
to get them over the hump.
Speaker 9 (01:33:28):
I hope he gets some players.
Speaker 2 (01:33:30):
That's what he means exactly. Thanks Steve, I appreciate the call.
Speaker 4 (01:33:33):
Okay, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:33:34):
Sure, let's take a break more after this. Since that
he's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:33:37):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.
Speaker 5 (01:33:43):

Washington Way. Accident on the right shoulder between US fifty

Speaker 20 (01:34:25):
Plucked one plug two plucked one pluck two plucked one
plugged two plucked one.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
There is baseball today, Taran. Did you know that the
battle there? The baseball Bearcats are playing Canecious right now
on campus. They are leading thirteen to five in the
top of the ninth. No Reds rained out in Arizona.
(01:34:58):
Sunny Arizona, not today, a cloudy, dreary, cold, rainy Arizona
Reds and Giants canceled. Reds will be back at it
tomorrow three oh five against the Diamondbacks. Cincinnati against Oklahoma
State tomorrow at three Xavier Senior Day against Providence at four.
(01:35:22):
We'll get to that here shortly. Mike in l A, Mike,
are you there this time? Yeah, that's all right. I'll
just making sure you're.
Speaker 9 (01:35:31):
Good when you get old brother disconnect.
Speaker 4 (01:35:36):
Really, QUI, what's up?
Speaker 9 (01:35:41):
You're well aware of it.
Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
I'm well aware.
Speaker 9 (01:35:46):
Uh. You know the problem with you younger guys is
feel sorry for you, but you missed the heyday in
Cincinnati sports, and that train ain't coming back anytime soon.
Speaker 2 (01:35:57):
Well, I mean I six the.
Speaker 9 (01:35:59):
Sixties in the seventies, you guys missed it.
Speaker 2 (01:36:02):
But I had a I mean I had a pretty
good there's a pretty good run from eighty eight to
like ninety three, right, the Reds won a World Series,
the Bengals went to the Super Bowl, you see, went
to a Final four. Like it wasn't the that era.
But I had a pretty good run from like eighty
eight to ninety three.
Speaker 9 (01:36:22):
Yeah, and since then, nothing else city there, right, nothing.
Speaker 6 (01:36:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:36:27):
I mean you think it don't rain in California, it
don't win in Cincinnati either.
Speaker 2 (01:36:31):
Yeah, I hear you.
Speaker 3 (01:36:33):
No.
Speaker 9 (01:36:33):
I mean I'm a native Cincinnati and it's buggs shit.
I mean, it's a star as up my mouth. It doesn't.
Speaker 7 (01:36:40):
I don't lose any sleep over, let's put it like that.
Speaker 10 (01:36:43):
But it just seems like anymore and the impression around
the country in Cincinnati sports are kind of laughing stuck,
and they do have the reputation of being cheap and
two conservatives and I learned that from all over this country.
That's a very pervasive opinion, not just a Cincinnati, well
(01:37:04):
just specifically a Cincinnati, but of the Midwest in general.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
So, I mean, they've earned it, like the Bengals and
the Reds have earned the rep. They have cheap ownership,
they have ownership that tries to save dollars. And you know,
you'll never convince me what the Reds do is smart
because they tear everything down and they have four thousand
people in the stands. If they just win, there'd be
forty thousand people in that stadium every night, and they'd
(01:37:30):
make money. They'd be printing money out of Great American Ballpark.
They'd be doing what Saint Louis does.
Speaker 9 (01:37:39):
I don't get it either. The other thing, the other thing,
you know, I mean in California is not really a
fair compart. But there's just so much more to do here.
You know, there's a lot more people, so we get
a lot you know, there's a lot more fans than
the stands. Dodgers lead to lead the Major w but
because there's so many people, but there's just so much
(01:38:00):
else to do out here. And and the real thing is,
you don't hear people out in California getting all riled
up about this stuff. And the reason is is because
they there's other stuff to do and focus on. That's
the way the passion's not there. It is, but it's
it's tamed, so to speak. You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (01:38:21):
Sure, I mean I lived out there. I know the
I know the vibe.
Speaker 9 (01:38:27):
Yeah, and a lot of people don't like it.
Speaker 21 (01:38:29):
I think it's a vibe that will allow you to
live a little longer because it's not so you know.
Speaker 2 (01:38:35):
What I like? You know what I like, Mike, I like.
I like the food was awesome, and I like being
able to go. And I think I'm gonna go beach today.
I think I think. I think I'm gonna go and
have lunch at the beach, at the pier.
Speaker 9 (01:38:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
That that makes for it, no matter what happens the
rest of the day. That makes for a heck of
the day. I think I'm gonna I think I'm gonna
roll down to her Mosa Beach and I'm going to
hit up Sharky. He's a happy hour for two for
one cocktails.
Speaker 9 (01:39:07):
Yeah, maybe the girls, Maybe we'll arrange it and I'll
take the girls. We'll go off to Sierra Nevada's up
at Sequoia National for a long weekend and just enjoy
the hell out of nature at its finest right, you know,
the all these things to go and do. Go to
Vegas in five hours, go to Mexico in a couple
of hours. It's it's unbelievable. But this guy have you
(01:39:29):
seen his cat? At Tampa, Tampa Bay. I've Curtis need
this kid. He's fifteenth for nineteen dang in training. He's
leading the home MLB, of course. And I heard an
interview with their manager, Kevin Cash, and he said, well,
(01:39:50):
we'll see, but he said, you know, we're throwed to death.
Of course, we're throll to death. And then they got
a guy down there named Junior cam and Aro is
hitting four hundred and fifty foot home runs like there
shots on the ninth hole. It's just crazy to keep
an eye on Tampa. And right now I will say this.
They play in a much tougher division in the American
League East, for real, And I bet you Tampa has
(01:40:13):
a better record than the Reds too. It might be
by one game, but I bet you they end up
with an ending and it might even be a better
record than the Revs. And the Reds can win in
Central how about that?
Speaker 2 (01:40:25):
Yeah, it's uh, that's big boy life in the in
the in the Al East, that's for sure.
Speaker 8 (01:40:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:40:35):
And I you know, and I sense your prosperration kied
a lot. I mean, you temper it very well, and
you rationalize it very well. But you're so entwined with
the city and with your company and your publication, and
it's got to be especially hard on you trying to
create a enthusiasm and excitement and and those kinds of things.
(01:40:57):
So my heart goes out to you because I know
it has to make it a little bit harder.
Speaker 2 (01:41:01):
It does, but it's you learn over the years how
to how to navigate the good, you know. The That's
one of the things that I've learned doing this is
the the the lows aren't as low as they feel
at the moment. Sometimes the highs are as high as
they feel at the moment, but they're fleeting. They're not
going to last forever, and you're going to deal with
in college sports in twenty twenty five unless you have
(01:41:24):
hundreds of millions of dollars to throw at everything. And
even then, it's not a guarantee, but it makes life easier.
Like there's going to be some ups and downs, and
fans are going to be pissed because they spend their
money and they want a return on their investment and
they don't always get it. And I understand that.
Speaker 21 (01:41:42):
And like the last guy that called and I thought you,
I thought you presented a terrific of not an argument,
but a rebuttal, so to speak, of what he was saying,
because it is a different WoT it's even.
Speaker 9 (01:41:57):
Over the last five years now or ten years, is
complete a different all the sports college, all of them,
everything has changed. It has and you're right, you've got
to roll with those changes or you're gonna get left behind,
whether you like him or not.
Speaker 4 (01:42:13):
Huh yep.
Speaker 2 (01:42:14):
I mean that's one of the things. I think. That's
one of the reasons I think Wes is worth sticking
with for now. And you know, because he has been
one that has not been resistant to change. It's not
like he's digging his feet in and like refusing to
adjust with the times. He is trying to roll with
(01:42:34):
the punches and trying to adapt to an entirely new landscape,
also an entirely new league that he's not, you know,
familiar with He's an acc guy learning the Big twelve.
So yeah, I do think because partially because he is
willing to adjust and adapt that you know, you give
him a little bit more rope.
Speaker 9 (01:42:56):
See, And that's not something that I That's not an
argument that I tip for a year because I listened
to Tony and often and you and Moana almost every day,
and I just don't hear that lightly more realistic attitude.
I'll end up with this question. If it's okay you
mentioned his two recruits coming in one point guard, I
(01:43:17):
forget the other guy.
Speaker 8 (01:43:18):
Now.
Speaker 9 (01:43:19):
Is it common in this day and age of nil
and everything for those guys to say, well, they had
a bad season. I don't want to go there now.
Speaker 2 (01:43:28):
No, not really. Now those guys are already signed, so
you can get out of it. But here's the thing
I think people. Cincinnati hasn't had the season that was
expected Mike, but they didn't crater like if you fall
completely off the map, then yeah, maybe guys are looking
at it and going, hey man, these guys won two
conference games, Like, maybe that's not the mess I want
(01:43:49):
to get into. It hasn't been at that level. It
hasn't been a disaster. It just hasn't met expectations and
people are pissed about it. And that's okay.
Speaker 9 (01:44:00):
I guess the other side to that corn is those
kids could say.
Speaker 2 (01:44:03):
Hey, they're gonna play.
Speaker 6 (01:44:05):
We don't know where to go.
Speaker 2 (01:44:06):
But up right, they're gonna play.
Speaker 9 (01:44:07):
Let's let's the city rally around us, the new guys,
and we're gonna take your ass and go go go.
All right, I know you got to go jump.
Speaker 2 (01:44:14):
Thanks Mike, appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (01:44:16):
Have a great weekend YouTube.
Speaker 12 (01:44:17):
Brother.
Speaker 2 (01:44:18):
All right, let's take a break. Phone lines are lighting up.
I'm gonna just keep taking phone calls until we get
to the end. So let's take a quick break, tearing,
and then we'll come back and we'll take phone calls
the rest of the way. Says that he's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:44:30):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from.

so about seventy five traffic stop and go Western Hills

Speaker 2 (01:45:05):
I that he sound like with traffic, this report sponsoring people,
except let's get hill.
Speaker 1 (01:45:14):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (01:45:17):
Calling you and when it comes to down, don't scandalize me.
Speaker 2 (01:45:24):
That's been too much cat walk who final segment of
the day, taking you into the weekend. Bear Cats, Cowboys
tomorrow three o'clock in still Water, Musketeers Friars Centas Center,
(01:45:46):
four o'clock. The Reds are at it in uh In,
Arizona at three oh five FC Cincinnati at home at
seven thirty. By going on this weekend either home or
on the road. But the Queen City A lot of action,
so a lot to get to on Saturday. We got
(01:46:08):
the phone lines full. Let's see. We'll go with Chad
downtown first. Chad, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:46:16):
Hey?
Speaker 22 (01:46:17):
Goaheay, you've McCall hey. You would know this more than
any of us would. The fact that west Miller is
coming back next year, is that more to do with
because of him? Out of the buyout or do you
really believe that they think that that is it because
Cunningham that's his guy. Because I find it harder to
believe that anybody in this program or taking hold of
boosters could possibly think that this is the right guy
for the job based on what they've seen, because when
(01:46:38):
you listen to those press conferences again, you would know
this more than we would. But it's the same stuff
he said the end of last year.
Speaker 4 (01:46:44):
It's the same stuff. It seems like I don't know
if the players.
Speaker 22 (01:46:47):
Are not responding to him, but I just wonder, in
your opinion, is is him not coming back more because
of the buyout amount and not because they believe he's
the guy, but just simply the financial.
Speaker 2 (01:46:57):
And genuinely think Cunningham believes he is the guy that
can get it done and you can people can disagree
with that, and that's fine, but John, and also think
about it this way, Chad, John's job is in a
lot of ways tied to Wes Miller being successful. Wes
Miller isn't successful. That's John Cunningham's responsibility. So he's gonna
give him a little bit more rope than than maybe
(01:47:19):
you want him too. But I I don't you know again,
I thought last year was about where I expected them
to end up in the Big twelve. I think this
year was a disappointment. They did not meet expectations. I
don't necessarily think that one bad year you just fire
coaches like that's you know.
Speaker 22 (01:47:39):
No, I agree that that's why. Like I said, I
wanted to hear your perspective.
Speaker 6 (01:47:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 22 (01:47:42):
I know. By the way, I'm glad you. I see
you always having Twitter batterles with some chat on Twitter.
Speaker 2 (01:47:48):
That's not me, No, that's enjoy your that's a Zadier fan.
Speaker 9 (01:47:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 22 (01:47:54):
I appreciate your perspective because I know you have the
ins and outs of the team. I just want to
hear what you thought.
Speaker 4 (01:47:58):
I appreciate you take my appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:47:59):
Thanks Chad. Let's go to David, who wants to talk
more Wes Miller, David, what's up? What's up?
Speaker 21 (01:48:08):
Chad?
Speaker 23 (01:48:10):
You're a good man.
Speaker 9 (01:48:11):
I tried to lead with you, and I heard with you.
Speaker 23 (01:48:14):
It was my big cake. I totally agree with everything
you said.
Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
Money money, you didn't you didn't finish it, So you're
all right.
Speaker 23 (01:48:20):
I think, yeah, good, thank you. Well, I think is
what we miss is with John Cunningham. I mean, what
are we could have hired some other coaches. I mean,
centerfield was not a sexy splash.
Speaker 2 (01:48:34):
It wasn't and we at first I.
Speaker 23 (01:48:36):
Thought was it was a pretty you know, because what
he did I was was recruiting.
Speaker 12 (01:48:39):
I was like that we could.
Speaker 23 (01:48:41):
Have had Rick Patino, we could have had Sanders.
Speaker 9 (01:48:45):
We could have had a lot of these other coaches.
Speaker 23 (01:48:47):
I think every time Cincinnati goes with the non sexy
appeal and they suffer for it.
Speaker 2 (01:48:54):
David, do you know who the president at the University
of Cincinnati is?
Speaker 4 (01:48:58):
I do?
Speaker 2 (01:48:59):
Do you know where he was graduated? Do you know
where he was before he was at Cincinnati.
Speaker 23 (01:49:06):
I'd be lying if I said I did.
Speaker 8 (01:49:07):
I don't remember.
Speaker 2 (01:49:08):
He was at Louisville as the interim president. Do you
know what he had to do when he was at Louisville?
Nothing had to help clean up that mess from the
stuff that happened while Rick Patino is there. You think
that man is going to hire Rick Patino at Cincinnati?
Speaker 23 (01:49:27):
David, Well, I you know, I would love to be
recruited there.
Speaker 2 (01:49:34):
Sure, sure, you'd love to be the dad on a
recruiting trip.
Speaker 23 (01:49:38):
I just, I mean, I just I sider Field for
sure was I was like, and all the zab excuse me,
all the Louisville fans were on Twitter going thank you
for taking him Wes, I'm not sure.
Speaker 4 (01:49:50):
I was just like, oh my god.
Speaker 23 (01:49:52):
But I just I just feel like we missed the
boat on starting from the beginning and then going after that.
I think you know, you can always say about the money,
but I agree with you. I just I think we
missed chances here with hiring the going out and hiring
the sexy appeal rather than just hiring somebody that we
feel like is gonna fit the bill.
Speaker 2 (01:50:09):
Yeah, that's fair. I get where you're coming from. Appreciate
the call man. All right, Thanks David and David Redding.
Speaker 8 (01:50:17):
How's it going, Dave, Hey, Chad, I talked. Do you
want to remember I talked to you about two years ago?
I remember, Yeah, okay, great. I worked with a friend
Quentin's geers, Big Mo and Post and I know them.
Speaker 2 (01:50:30):
Oh guys, yep.
Speaker 8 (01:50:31):
Yeah. So I've been one of the colors so well.
I had had chance, but so much I want to
ask you, but I'll just touch on the two current
things now, because I know you got a lot of
callers one first is the Trey Hendricks thing. I kind
of you know what you guys were saying. I love Trey.
He has no way that the player Garrett or t J.
Watt is because they do so much more damage to
(01:50:52):
move him around. But you guys remember this of the
day of specialization and getting seventeen and a half sacks
is very important. And I just think that you know,
it's touch and going where, you know, keeping them paying
that much money.
Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
But I think with Tray, if it was like twenty
twenty two, twenty five million to be a specialist, I
think that's great. I think if he wants to be
paid like these guys that are more complete players, then
you have to tell him, I wish you well and
I hope you get what you're looking for. Like and
(01:51:25):
what we don't know, here's what we don't know. We
don't know if he's going to get what he's looking for.
Right he's given he's been given permission to request or
to find a trade partner. We don't know what they're
going to say. I mean, maybe somebody is that desperate
to get that, you know, that final what they think
is the final step to be a Super Bowl contender.
(01:51:48):
Or whatever, and adding him is what they think is
the missing piece. But you know NFL teams are going
to look at it and see a lot of the
things that we're talking about that if you're looking to
get in that thirty million dollar range and you give me,
you know, one sack and two tackles a game, is
that thirty million dollars.
Speaker 8 (01:52:08):
Yeah, I you know it's It's just because they're doing
this doesn't mean it's a given thing. And he might
I find anybody he might be back with next year
on the last year, or they might decide to do
something touching on the UC thing. I'm a big u
SAT fan for way back. I have been on a
record and calling these shows. I've gotten some kind of
(01:52:30):
reviews from some of the Bearcat fans and things I was.
I didn't like the way that they did Coach Brandon,
I've met him a couple of times. I just think
he's a much better bench coach than coach Miller. And yeah,
they want to make close games back when he coached,
but I think at the same time, I thought coach
(01:52:52):
Miller is a man for a job because I love
his passion and his recruiting. He's a good recruiter, but
it's just working out right now. I just, uh, I
don't know what to say about that. I just I
just think that they probably should have. What you were saying,
(01:53:13):
I know what I'm trying to say is I think
you got to keep him around because it dis rupts
the program too much to let somebody go. Now, Huggs
was I love Hugs to death. He was not really
the best Ben's coach in the world. There got a
better bench coaches. He's a great recruiter, he knew how
to handle the kids and everything like that. And and
(01:53:33):
Cronion really wasn't is good a recruiter, but he had
them well too. And I just think that, you know that,
I think that coach Miller's uh, you got to stick
with him and just got to live with the fact
that he might be getting out coach sometimes of the
Eventually he's gonna get the players.
Speaker 6 (01:53:48):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:53:49):
One last thing, me being the historian of you see,
I won't touch on now if I have time here,
but I got about Okay, there is one more one
bigger disappoint team and then this Bearcat team this year,
and that comes back to seventy seven, seventy eight. Way
back then, they were picking number one in the nation
(01:54:09):
to start the year and they didn't didn't even make
the tournament. Back then, it was hard to make the
tournament than it is now because and I did that.
And you know who want a boy with that year
Kentucky Wildcats?
Speaker 2 (01:54:23):
Yep.
Speaker 8 (01:54:23):
And my boss was a big Kentucky man, and I
had to hear from the whole year. Now, I'm it was.
It was really tough because that team really should have
been great that year.
Speaker 2 (01:54:36):
All right, man, I appreciate it, Dave. And if you
see possum kicking for me, oh yeah, Well.
Speaker 8 (01:54:41):
One wayt thing, I want to give you a little
bit of advice if you don't mind you said the
melancholy day, because that Kelly just remember all the great
times you had with her and that gets you to
to day.
Speaker 13 (01:54:51):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:54:52):
I appreciate it, Dave. Thanks man, you have a great weekend.
Speaker 13 (01:54:55):
You do.
Speaker 2 (01:54:55):
All right? There you go, it's gonna wrap it up.
What's that five five shows in eight days or something.
Speaker 3 (01:55:04):
Like that, Tarn Yeah, something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:55:05):
Yeah, well, the last like the last seven shows. Mo
has been here twice. Here are five shows, five out
of eight, five out of seven. Chad Brindle Show, the
Chad Brendel Show. Yeah, the Chad Brendel Show. I don't
have time for that. Tara, this is taxing me this week.
I don't have time for that. Appreciate everybody tuning in.
(01:55:27):
Uh Xavier can I think Xavier plays their way in
if they win tomorrow. So a big one against Providence
at home and uh, we'll see if you see can
survive at Oklahoma State. I'll see in a couple of
weeks some Oeger shows since that He's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:55:44):
Big about.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):

gets side.
