ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station, Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Good afternoon on mullgar. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank
you for listening. Hopefully you're having.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
An awesome I said awesome Wednesday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
The full show preview is up on Twitter at mulegar.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Thanks to our friends at United.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
No no, no, that's the poll question mode, get it right.
Thanks to our friends at Emory Federal Credit Union. Emory
Federal Credit Union is your credit union with heart and
has been since nineteen thirty nine. I have made a
lot of bad decisions in my life, but one of
the best decisions I have ever made is I became
a member of Emery Federal Credit Union on October nineteenth,

(00:50):
twenty twenty three, so about about a year and a
half ago. About a year and a half ago. Emory
Federal Credit Union Bridgetown Road brand.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
That's my spot.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Go to EMERYFCU dot org. The NCAA Tournament began last
night with a great game between a pair of sixteens,
a really bad, lobsided game between a pair of eleven seeds.
I love what North Carolina did. Hopefully we love what
Xavier does. Tonight Musketeers taking on Texas in a really
really interesting game, really interesting game. From this very simple perspective,

(01:24):
Texas probably has the best player on the floor in
Trey Johnson, a freshman, a likely lottery pick, certainly an
NBA first rounder. It feels to me like Xavier has
the better team. Xavier played better down the stretch. They
didn't play that poorly against Marquette in the game they
lost in the biggiest tournament, So what gives tonight? Rick
Broing joins us coming up at three forty five Musketeer

(01:44):
Report dot com. We are looking forward to that. I
was just talking with Austin and Tony on Sincy three
to sixty. Hopefully you were here for that a little
bit about the concerns about the Reds offense, and I
have those concerns. I have those concerns. Maybe the difference
between me and everybody else says I had those concerns
when spring training started. I want to get to that.
We have some residual stuff left over from t Higgins

(02:07):
and Jamar Chase and the press conference yesterday, and we're
gonna get to all of that. Speaking of the Reds,
we are eight days away from opening Day, and I
believe there's still some optimism. There should at least still
be some optimism because this team's got a shot. This
division is not great, and the red starting pitching has

(02:28):
a chance to be really, really good.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I think we would agree with that right.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
If the Reds are good, starting pitching will probably be
the main reason why. Obviously, you need good bullpen work,
and they got to run the bases better, and they've
got to be better defensively, and they need some players
individually offensively to do much more than they did last year,
in many cases, do much more than they have at
any point during their careers. They need help, they need

(02:55):
a lot. But if the Reds figure out a way
to be the team at the top of the heap
in the National League Central by the end of the season,
my guess is we're going to look at the starting
pitching and go, oh man, that group was as good
as expected and maybe in many cases better than expected.
The red starting pitching was an asset last year. Unfortunately

(03:17):
they wasted it. So I think we would agree with
that right that if the Reds are good this year,
the starting pitching is going to be a major reason why.
And you could say, well, god Mo, if any team's good,
the starting pitching is going to be a major reason why.
And there's certainly validity to that argument. But you've seen
what some of these guys can do. You know what
their upside is, you know what their reputations are. You

(03:39):
know what the Reds did to the starting staff this offseason.
By adding some depth, the starting pitching has a chance
to be really good. And if the starting pitching is good,
hunter Green is going to be a huge reason why.
Hunter Green was awesome last year. I think a lot
of people forget that. I think a lot of people

(04:00):
because you know, as the season kind of unfolded toward
the end, the attention had shifted to football or other things,
or they really weren't playing for anything, and then there
was the managerial change. But Hunter Green was awesome last year.
He was a deserving All Star. He finished eighth in
the National League Cy Young voting, and he charged toward

(04:22):
the finish line opposing hitters in his last nine starts
patted one p thirty his era in those last nine
starts one point two. Now, he didn't check every single
box last year because he did spend some time on
the injured list, So he only made twenty five starts,
and it is completely reasonable to say, look, Hunter's not

(04:45):
quite there as a bona fide top of the rotation,
legitimate staff ace slash cy young candidate until he gets
through a full season without missing a start. I'm with
you there, But he was awesome last year. Because he
was awesome last year, Number one, I think there's a
huge set of expectations for him this season. I think

(05:08):
because of that, there's a huge set of expectations for
the starting staff, and there's I think enhanced hopes for
how good the team can be this year. Can you imagine, though,
had last season Hunter Green put the year together that
he did, led all of baseball among pitchers in wins

(05:28):
above replacement, he cut down in the home runs. He
was awesome last year. Can you imagine what he would
have been able to ask the Reds for? Not as
a free agent obviously, but as a guy who was
arbitration eligible. Last season was year number three he became

(05:49):
he would have become arbitration eligible. Can you imagine what
he could have asked for and maybe what he could
have gotten. He couldn't go to arbitration because the Reds
a few years ago, bought out his free agency year
and his first free agency year, and obviously along with
that they bought out all of his arbitration years. And

(06:11):
it was a smart deal for Hunter Green because he
still has a chance to hit free agency when he
is in his prime, when he's much more established, well
before he's thirty years old. Smart move for hunter smart
move for the Reds, because Hunter Green this year is
going to be I believe the eighty second highest paid
pitcher starting pitcher in all of baseball. Eighty one starting

(06:32):
pitchers will make more money this year than Hunter Green.
There are not eighty one better starting pitchers in baseball
than Hunter Green. So imagine, imagine what it would cost
to pay him this year. He's going to make a
little bit more than six million dollars this year. That's, obviously,
in the real world, not an insignificant amount of money

(06:53):
by any stratch, but still for a starting pitcher who
was as good as Hunter Green was last year, that
is a bargain. And in twenty twenty six that the
salary's gonna go up by about two million bucks. Hunter
Green could lead the league in everything this year, eer strikeouts,
strikeouts per nine innings, quality starts, you name it. Remember,
on this show, we do not mention wins or losses

(07:15):
by pitchers, so that stat is totally irrelevant. He could
lead the league in all the stats that matter, win
the Cy Young Award, be the best pitcher on the
best be the best pitcher on the best team in baseball,
and he's gonna get like a two million dollar raise
next year. I'm not asking you to feel sorry for
Hunter Green. I'm asking you to, number one, at least

(07:35):
have an appreciation for what the Reds did with him.
The Reds get credit and deserve credit for getting out
in front of Hunter Green early because they believed in
him as a long term asset. Obviously, he could still
hit free agency down the road. My guess is Hunter
Green in twenty twenty nine or twenty thirty is going
to be pitching somewhere else. We'll see if that happens.

(07:58):
I'm not worried about that. There's a long time between
now and then. But they get a guy who is
among the best pitchers in the National League, among the
best pitchers in the sport that moving forward, they're really
not going.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
To be paying all that much.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
The highest amount of money Hunter Green can make in
any season under his current contract is sixteen million dollars.
That's still a hell of a bargain. The Reds got
out in front of this. They paid their star early,
which is what many have talked about the Bengals not
doing with Jamar Chase and T Higgins. I know you

(08:35):
might not want to hear this because you know we're
still I think sifting through the glorious aftermath of the
happiest press conference of all time yesterday, And that was
a really fun event if you're a Bengals fan.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
That was fun.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
It was fun because T Higgins and Jamar Chase have
engaging personalities. It was fun because you know, it's fun
to think about those two guys catching Joe Burrow for
our favorite team moving forward. It was lighthearted, there was
a sense of relief, and let's be honest, there were
many times where we thought an event like that with
both those players talking about their contract extensions would never happen.

(09:13):
And so yesterday was really cool and most of us
are on board with what the Bengals have done. But
you know how this works, right, the Bengals do something,
it lands on the national radar. Everybody opines. One of
the opinions you will hear and read that I think
it's pushed back at by a lot of folks here
is this is great, but they should have done this

(09:35):
a while ago, because you've ended up paying those players
a little bit more now in the grand scheme of things.
I think T Higgins could end up being an incredible bargain.
And Jamar Chase will not permanently own the title of
highest paid non quarterback in the NFL. We've had three
guys own that title so far this offseason. And it's
not yet. We're not to April yet. But yes, yes

(10:00):
I can't help but wonder and I promise you, I
promise you. Upstairs at the venue originally known as Paul
Brown Stadium, they're asking themselves the same thing. What would
we be paying these guys had we gotten these deals
done a year ago? It is a fair criticism. It

(10:21):
is at least a fair observation that they waited longer
than they needed to, and that they maybe waited longer
than they should have, and that if they would have
gotten these deals done a while ago. First of all,
how many headaches could have been avoided? A hold in
all the ins and outs of Jamar and t but

(10:42):
also what could they be doing with that extra money
that they now have to pay those two players. And
that's a question we're going to be asking moving forward,
well beyond this offseason. Moving forward, you've got to get
out in front of things like this with elite players.
Baseball and football are different sports, not obviously just on

(11:04):
the field, but with regard to how contracts are structured
in the CBA and when players can hit free agency,
and baseball has this awful arbitration system football really doesn't
have that you can lock in a player long term
anytime in baseball football you've got to hit a certain
date of eligibility.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
It's not apples to apples. I'm the first to admit that.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
But one of the best things the Reds have done
in recent years is they get Hunter Green, who they
had no doubts about, who they knew was a face
of the franchise. By the way, Hunter Green has had injuries,
He's had Tommy John surgeries, not gotten through a full
big league season without spending time on the injury list,
and yet they still said that's a guy long term,
that kind of talent we want to lock in the rate.

(11:45):
We want to know what we're going to be paying him,
and you know what, he may turn out to be
a bargain. That doesn't mean Hunter's not going to hit
free agency one day.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
He will.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
It's why the deal, from his perspective, was smart. He
gets a great amount of financial security and still has
a chance to go get the bag while he still
is in his prime. But can you imagine what they
would be paying this guy this year, next year, and
next year if he keeps pitching at a really high level.
Don't have to worry about that because they got out
in front of it. You got to get out in

(12:16):
front of these things with elite players when you're allowed.
The Reds did it with Hunter Green. So far it's worked.
They deserve credit for it. The Bengals, yes, deserve credit
for doing what Joe Burrow wanted a team president, team
general manager, Joe Burrow doing what he wanted signing both
getting this done and now we can wonder how the

(12:37):
Bengals are going to fix the rest of the team
and what the future may look like with that trio
of players together forging the Bengals identity. You can be
excited about that, and I think you can also recognize
that from a financial perspective, things would be a little
bit more team friendly had they not waited. The lesson
moving forward is don't wait on elite players. Wait on

(13:00):
elite players that you have questions about. There are no
questions about Jamar Chase, there aren't questions about t Higgins.
But still don't wait. Get it done, reap the savings,
reap the good will, and keep the players. The Reds
did that, they deserve credit. The Bengals didn't.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
It.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
It factors into the conversation about what they have done
with those two wide receivers. Your thoughts are always welcome.
Five one, three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number. Eight sixty six seven oh two three seven
seven three seven seven six works as well. I had
a wish. I had a wish in January. I had

(13:46):
a wish in February. I've got a wish in March.
Am I gonna have that same wish in April, May
and June. I'll tell you what that wish was and
is next on ESPN fifteen thirty. If you missed Paul
Dayner Junior yesterday from the venue originally known as Paul

(14:07):
Brown Stadium, right after the big press conference yesterday. If
you missed that conversation, well, why good news is we
put it on the app, the iHeartRadio app, the absolutely free,
new and improved iHeartRadio App. And if you missed our
chat with our guy Lee Sterling trying to make us
some money on college hoops. As the tournament continues tonight

(14:29):
with the second two games in the first four. If
you miss that, it's also on the iHeartRadio app. So
is our entire show, so is so much more. Also,
go to the podcast page of ESPN fifteen thirty dot

First of all four KTVs all over the place, awesome

(14:51):
beer selection, tons of great food, awesome wings. And if
you go to Long Necks right now, or if you
go tonight, or if you go at any point before
the games tip off tomorrow, you could fill out a
free bracket to win a big screen Ultra four K TV.
How about that You could watch the games at Long

(15:12):
Necks and you could win a four K TV at
Long Necks. You cannot beat that. Wilder Hebron and Richwood
By the way, the Reds do not play today. Xavier
plays tonight. Rick Brooring on the Muskies coming up in
just about twenty minutes. We are looking forward to that.
I talked about Hunter Green before in the Reds and
Tony and Austin were having this conversation about the Reds

(15:33):
and the Cactus League, and I take all of those
results with the grain of salt. I will acknowledge this
that for a franchise that for decades has been mostly
associated with losing, anything that's not losing is really good.
The Reds have recently they broke the skid yesterday, done
a lot of losing in the Cactus League. Do their
offensive struggles in Arizona poor tend offensive struggles this coming season.

(15:57):
I don't know, but I the Rads made a flurry
of moves kind of late in the offseason. Good moves
like the Austin Hayes signing is a good one, and
the relief pitchers they acquired, who, by the way, right
now sort of feel like almost necessities, good acquisitions, like

(16:18):
legitimately good acquisitions. One of the things I spent a
lot of time during the winter wondering is like, are
they ever going to make the bullpen better. And I
think with Taylor Rogers and with Scott Barlow, they've given
Terry Francona and Derek Johnson more options. And the Jose
Travino signing is a trade because they sent Fernando Cruz
to the Yankees. That's good, that's a really good backup catcher.

(16:41):
But all along, my basic, non controversial statement was I
wish they would add one more bat, specifically in the
outfield where they are very very unproven and very very
not deep.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
And beyond Austin Hayes.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
They didn't do that. That was my wish back in January.
It was my wish last month. It's my wish now,
and it's exacerbated by the fact not so.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Much that they've struggled to hit in the Cactus League.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Although you can't help but factor that into the conversation,
but Tyler Stevenson is not going to start the season
active and healthy and very quietly.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
He had a really good year last year.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
He is one of their best three or four hitters,
and so is Spencer Steer, and so I can't help
but wonder for a team that I think has a
shot to win the division. I genuinely think that, and
for an organization that I think views itself as having

(17:46):
a shot this year, should they have gone and gotten
one more bat, I think that's something you could have
said at any point during this offseason. I think you
could have said it even once they acquired Austin Hayes,
like the Tyler Stevenson thing. And I'm hopefully not being
an alarmist here, this concerns me.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
It's an oblique like I just I.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Feel like, in all the years I've been following sports,
like oblique injuries are just the trickiest to pin a
timeline to the ones that seem to be recurring the
most often. It's an oblique For guy who plays catcher,
I know you can d h him and stuff, but
still he plays catcher and he's really important to the team.

(18:32):
There's also this, and I know I mentioned this earlier.
Charlie Goldsmith, formerly the Cincinnati Inquirer, does an awesome newsletter
and if you care it all about Cincinnati sports, and
Charlie is not paying me to say this. If you
care it all about Cincinnati sports, you should want to
subscribe to Charlie's chalkboard. And there's obviously a pretty much

(18:53):
a ninety nine percent Reds and Bengals Focus. Charlie does
a very good job in one of today's entries, and
he sometimes does multiple per day of outlining kind of
where the Reds are as spring training draws to a
conclusion and how there are still a lot of questions
up in the air, maybe more than when spring training

(19:15):
started because of the injury situations that Spear and a Spear,
Steer and Stevenson are dealing with. But he also outlines
what's going on in the division. Not that an zero
to two start will sink a team, but the Chicago
Cubs have played two games that count. Chances are you
had no idea they were going on. They were in Japan.

(19:36):
They lost two to the LA Dodgers. The Chicago Cubs
have some very legitimate question marks, even if they are
considered understandably so. N L Central favorites major questions in
the starting rotation. The Saint Louis Cardinals are way young,

(19:56):
basically sat out this offseason. The only thing they really
tried to do is trade Nolan Aeronato. That didn't work.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of really good, young,
promising pitchers, led by Paul Skeens, who I already think
is the best pitcher in baseball. Their offense might be
horrendous this year. The Brewers lost Willie Adamis, and as
Charlie points out, they currently have five starting pitchers on

(20:18):
the injured list. Like, this window is open, and the
door might be open at the outset of the season.
And so because of that, I think, for me at
least and again, this may work, and maybe Matt McClain
stays healthy and ends up being even better than he
was two years ago. And my money is on that happening,

(20:41):
by the way, and my money is on Christian and
Carnacion Strand hitting more than twenty five home runs this year.
But it feels like they're putting a lot offensively on
a handful of guys, most of them are still kind
of unproven, and in the case of two, are coming
off major injuries last year. And I just I cannot
help but think that the more prudent approach would have

(21:03):
been to be a little bit more proactive as it
relates to the offense, specifically the altfield, especially given the
fact that they really do have a chance. We'll see,
time will tell, But if you're concerned about the offense
because they haven't been hitting during the Cactus League. I
kind of want to know where were you in January
and early February when a lot of us were saying
the exact same thing.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
It's a three thirty on ESPN fifteen thirty.

I know no pitbull for sure, you know no Pitbull

Speaker 7 (22:39):
You only did it because I got tweeted this today,
which I'm on record I'm not here for with new

(23:11):
game will tip off at nine to ten tonight and
you'll hear it live on seven hundred WLW, Mount Saint
Mary's and American You will be the first game. Xavier
is a two and a half point favorite in this game.
They played in this event in twenty fourteen, they took
on NC State and I went to that game.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
I would would love to go tonight.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
I just I got other stuff, But I went to
that game and the atmosphere was awesome because obviously Xavier
had a lot of fans there, but obviously there were
also a lot of fans of the ud Flyers who
are there to root against Xavier, and so I've got
to think a similar dynamic in play tonight. The Flyers,
for what it's worth, do play in the n IT
against Florida Atlantic. But tonight's tip off time is scheduled

(23:59):
for roughly again on seven hundred w l W. Rick
boring from Musketeer Report dot com. In just a few minutes,
Miami star Camcraft is entering the transfer portal. He started
his career at Xavier before averaging over thirteen and a
half points a game for a good RedHawks team for
Travis Steel this year. No Rad's game today. They will

(24:20):
take on the Royals tomorrow. Graham Ashcraft gets the start
for Cincinnati. No Bengals news haven't been able to say
that all that much. No Bengals news, which the dust
has settled on Jamar and Tea and the search for
a guard, assuming they're searching, continues. Just really quick on that.

(24:44):
We'll get to Rick here in a second, really quick.
On that, I fully expect them. Brandon Shurf is the
the current apple of everybody's eye as we talk about
guards that are still available in free agency and maybe
maybe they sign him. Maybe there's some other veteran free
agent out there. Maybe the Bengals fix the interior of

(25:06):
their offensive line and do so with a combination of
free agents and players who were here last year. Cody
Ford is back, Cordell Vohlson's going to be back. Maybe
there's I would be surprised if they don't draft a
guard at some point. Maybe a draft choice this year
factors into the mix and he becomes a part of
the short and long term solution. Maybe those things happen.

(25:28):
But I get the question a lot about well Duke
Tobin in the defense. Do you trust Duke Tobin to
draft well on defense? And the answer is no, because
recently he hasn't done it. We have been searching for
a good offensive line in Cincinnati since the twenty fifteen season.
To me, it is is one of the not what ifs.
It's one of the great whats right, what would happen

(25:51):
if Joe Burrow has ever put behind a really good
offensive line? And like with the defense, we could say, well,
you know, they just need a middle of the pack defense.
I want any lead offensive line. The tackles are fine.
Amarrius Mimms looks like a guy who's gonna really be
able to help this team moving forward. And I think
we're all happy with Orlando Brown and cool with running

(26:12):
it back with Ted Carris, but there is I think
some are giving the benefit of the doubt to the
Bengals who, when it comes to.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
That unit, that group do not deserve it.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
So, you know, yes, excitement for Jamar and T and
I certainly believe that signing those guys does not preclude
them from getting a guard. Guard plays stunk last year.
They couldn't wait to move on from Alex Kappa. This
isn't plug and play mo. They're gonna be fine. They're
gonna be Oh, they haven't been fine on the offensive
line in a decade. So I'm suddenly supposed to assume

(26:45):
that the team that always gets it wrong in the
offensive line, at least as it relates to having really,
really really good offensive lines is suddenly with the wave
of a magic wand gonna get it right this offseason.
I ain't there. I tell you where I will be
Holy Grail. Tomorrow, We're broadcasting from ten to noon. It's
our annual NCAA Tournament preview show. This is a blast.

(27:07):
We do the show, we hang out, we watch the games.
Dan Horde's gonna join us for a while, Richard Skinner's
gonna come by. Rick Browing is gonna join us, and
you're gonna hear from Rick here in just a second.
A few other guests as well that we're working on.
My buddy Shannon Miner is gonna stop by to talk
NKU basketball. The cool part about this is, obviously it's
we're out and about on a Thursday morning. We'll hang out,

(27:29):
watch the games. We've got tons of prizes. Our friends
at Chorus Light have provided a ton of swag, and
we do this every year too. We have a grand prize.
You gotta be one of the first sixty four people
through the door, and if you're among the first sixty
four people through the door, you will get a team.
You don't get to pick the team. The team is

(27:49):
given to you at random. But if your team wins
the national championship, you win a weekend golf getaway thanks
to Bertram Golf.

Speaker 2 (28:01):
How about that.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
It is eighteen away from four o'clock. We're not waiting
until tomorrow to talk to Rick Boring. He joins us
next on ESPN fifteen.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic from.

Speaker 6 (28:16):
The UC Health Traffic Center. The University of Cincinnati Cancer
Center offers innovative clinical trials in the region's only young
onset collorectal cancer program called five one three five eighty five.
UCCC getting reports of an accident involving a pedestrian on
McMillan at McMicken Avenue construction leaving westbound two seventy five

(28:38):
down to one lane and the Carrol Crowford Bridge that's
causing a ten minute delay back from the Petersburg exit
on that ezeleic with traffic.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
Himinson did twelve away from four. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
My name's Malegar.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
I saw Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (28:52):
Xavier placed the night in the NCAA Tournament in the
first four against Texas. Full coverage, comprehensive coverage, our friend
Rick Brooring, Musketeer Report, dot Com, uh n k U Radio,
the Skinny Podcast, uh the King of Facebook, and he's
with me tomorrow at the Holy Grail.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
It's it's remarkable. How's it going?

Speaker 4 (29:16):
Uh not no, And I'm just chill out Max and relaxing.

Speaker 3 (29:19):
All cool, you know, wow, very very well done. And
see it tied into what we just did at the
top of the previous segment. Thank you very much, just
trying to keep it jiggy. You're you're getting cute. Now,
don't don't push, don't don't push.

Speaker 8 (29:37):
That was pushing it. That was pushed. The bit went
too far at that point.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
Don't push that. Yes, yes, uh. How much of a
load is Trey Johnson for the Musketeers tonight?

Speaker 8 (29:48):
Cuge, I mean for everyone, not just Xavier, maybe for
the NBA next year. He's supposed to be a top
five pick in the upcoming draft. He's like a six
fourish athletic guard who can really go get his own
play one on one. He plays in isolation a lot.
They'll beat you with a lot of moves off the dribble.
He can shoot from anywhere, and I mean like anytime
he comes across half court, it's within his range. So

(30:10):
he's a really fun player to watch unless he's on
the team who's playing your favorite team, and then it
becomes a real problem. And that's one that Xavier fans
are going to be kind of happen to hope and
pray he doesn't play his best tonight.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
What else is Texas good at besides letting him do his.

Speaker 8 (30:26):
Thing well, I think the main concern for Xavier comes
in the form of Texas's athleticism, especially with the way
they use their perimeter players, and that would include their
forward Arthur Kaluma, who I would imagine will be matched
up but will have Marcus Foster guarding him. They like
to really spread their floor. They run high ball screens,

(30:46):
and a lot of teams. When you say high ball
screens you think like top of the key.

Speaker 4 (30:49):
They run their.

Speaker 8 (30:50):
Almost near mid court, so you have a lot of
room behind that ball screen where you have to guard
their superior athletes, and so Xavier is going to try
to keep their defense tight and not allow them to
get ahead of steam and play one on one, But
obviously Texas makes it difficult to do that, and you
absolutely cannot let them get out in transition where they
can use that athleticism, because when they get going and

(31:13):
they are playing with some momentum, they're really good on
the offensive end. It's just for them, those moments and
especially consistent defensive play have been do and far between.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
This year.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
Where do the Musketeers have advantages over Texas?

Speaker 8 (31:30):
I think the biggest thing that I'd be looking at
is spot up shooting. Xavier when they're at their best,
swings the ball around the perimeter and gets clean looks
for Ryan Conwell, Dante Maddox, Marcus Foster, and whoever else
is taking threes on that given day. Against Texas, opponents
have shot over thirty nine percent on spot up three

(31:51):
point opportunities. Part of that can be, you know, some
bad luck here and there, whatever, but a big part
of that is they're not great at sticking to shoot.
If they like to kind of flood to the ball
and swarm it look for some steals, although they're not
very good at getting steals, but they do come and
double king the ball occasionally at random times when ball
gets driven or thrown inside, they'll collapse there and that

(32:13):
allows you to kick the ball out and swing it
around and make their defense chase you. That's what Zeger
prefers to play against. That's their preferred style of defense
to go up against. So I think that's definitely a
good thing for Zadre in this matchup, and the fact
that they've let opponents shoot so well from beyond the
yard's that's a positive for X two.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Is there anybody in the Big East that Texas reminds
you of.

Speaker 8 (32:38):
They're almost like a combination of Saint John's and Creighton.
And the reason I say Creighton is because their center
is Cayden Chedrick, who's a six', eleven, mobile shot, blocking
pick and roll. Center they're not going to throw them
the ball in the, block but he is dangerous and
pick and. Rolls they'll throw lobs to him and he

(32:59):
can beat you up and down the floor in transition
get some offensive. Rebounds he's not as good As Ryan
caulkbrenner For, creighton but he plays in kind of a
similar style to. That so that's where that side of
it comes. In and then just from an athleticism, standpoint
they're not the. Bullies they don't play nearly as, hard
they're not as organized As Saint john's has been this,
year but they do have some of the similar traits

(33:21):
from an athleticism, standpoint especially when you look at like
the forward position With Arthur, kaluma his, versatility his ability
to rebound the ball at a high level and also
play on the. PERIMETER i think that versatility kind of
reminds you of What Saint john's.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
Brings Rick Rooring Musketeer report Dot. COM i know we
can get into this in greater detail tomorrow If xavier wins,
Tonight BUT i asked you Last, wednesday and this is
the day before The marquette. GAME i, said if they get,
in which was obviously a huge if right up until
the time their name showed up on the screen On.
Sunday but if they get, in do we start talking
about The musketeers as one of those teams that you

(33:55):
quote don't want to? Play and the answer was, yes
AND i think most would. Agree so that would tell
me that if they win, tonight that they're the sort
of team that could be dangerous when you look at
what they have coming up in their bracket In, milwaukee.

Speaker 8 (34:09):
Well especially the way it played out for them right
Because texas could be a very difficult matchup If texas
decides to play. Well so there's a Chance savior loses
this game. Tonight, Absolutely but for either one of these,
Teams texas Or, xavier if they're playing, well that next
round game Against illinois is a total crapshoot game Because
illinois at times is really. Good they have AN nba draft,

(34:32):
prospect a first, rounder as well a foreign player who
plays a point guard position is a very, dynamic skilled,
player but you can also shoot them out of, games
and their entire team plays that. Way they have very
poor shooting performances where they're just firing up shots from
all over and look undisciplined and are not very. Good
so Either texas Or xavier have an opportunity to Beat,
illinois depending on which version Of illinois they, get and

(34:55):
then that next round game Against, kentucky The wildcats are
just back up right. NOW i Like kentucky when they're
playing their, best but who knows what they're going to
look like in that. Game who knows If Lamont butler's
shoulder will hold up for two full rounds of this.
Tournament and also just from A xavier, PERSPECTIVE i don't
Think kentucky's a bad matchup for. Them they don't really

(35:15):
present a lot of the challenges That xavier doesn't like to.
Face that doesn't Mean zavior will beat them or will
be favored against, them but it means you feel pretty
good about your chances of an eleven seed playing against
the three seed if that situation would come to Passer zavier.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Fan does how we categorize This xavier season hinge on
whether or not they win.

Speaker 8 (35:35):
Tonight it probably does to some, extent, RIGHT i, mean
because if they, don't then you'll have a lot of
the fans who get frustrated saying they were never really
in the. TOURNAMENT a playing game doesn't count all of
those types of. Things i've heard that sentiment, before going
back When zavier played in the first four date and
in like twenty, FOURTEEN i. Believe but if they win

(35:55):
this game and then you lose a tough one To
illinois or something like, THAT i think a lot of
people remember this team for the way they closed the season,
out and they'll give them a little bit of leniency
for the fact that they did lose a starting center
In Lacina. Triora before the, season they did deal with
that three game stretch Where Zach fremantle was out and
then they had to re implement him back in and

(36:16):
get him back up to speed after his knee injury Against.
Cincinnati SO i definitely think it'll change the narrative of
the season to some.

Speaker 3 (36:23):
Extent When carolina showed up on the screen On, sunday
did you fear That xavier was on the outside looking?

Speaker 1 (36:29):
In?

Speaker 8 (36:31):
NO i had a different take on. THAT i understand
what people were. SAYING i, mean you could make the case, that,
okay At xavier's supposed to be one of the last
teams in And North carolina is, in then Maybe Buback
cunningham just did To xavier what happened what actually happened
To West, virginia, Right, LIKE i understand that, Idea but
the WAY i had looked at it the whole time Was.
Caro North carolina had a resume that was pretty similar

(36:54):
To xavier's in the sense that they both had a
glaring quad one, record just one quad one win against
a bunch of. Losses North carolina is actually a little
worse Than xaviers and they had A quad three loss as.
Well so WHEN i Saw North carolina in the, FIELD i, said,
oh that's, interesting because that might mean that the quad
one loss thing is not a big deal to the,

(37:15):
committee or at least not as big of a deal
as we were making it out to. Be and it
turns OUT i think that was the. Case they were
more interested, in you, know wins above bubble and some
of the other metrics there as opposed to the quad one.

Speaker 3 (37:27):
RECORD i cannot wait to talk about this game tonight
tomorrow with you at The Holy.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
Grail it's going to be.

Speaker 8 (37:33):
Fun, YEAH i think it should be a really good.
GAME i, mean you look at these two. Teams they're
one spot away from each other In Ken. Palm Ken
palm's predicting a one Point zager. Win texas a fun
team to. Watch it's a really talented, individual so win or,
lose it should be an entertaining matchup.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
Hopefully, yeah no question about. It we'll see tomorrow. Man
thanks so.

Speaker 3 (37:50):

Com so apparently The Minnesota vikings have, said, yeah we're.
Good as it relates To Aaron, rodgers WHO i guess
is going to take a sweet time trying to figure
out what he's going to do football wise in twenty twenty.

(40:59):
Five SO i guess now it's maybe down to The
giants or The Pittsburgh. Steelers and so the pole question
is Should bengals fans be rooting for The steelers to
Sign Aaron. RODGERS i am rooting for The steelers to
Sign Aaron rodgers because he does not solve their long
term quarterback. Question AND i think in the short term
With Aaron, rodgers your ceiling is still pretty. Low as

(41:23):
high as The Pittsburgh steelers floor is every. YEAR i
do not, believe and you, know time could prove me.
Wrong it's happened. BEFORE i do not Believe Aaron rodgers
raises the ceiling that. Much so vote now At. Moegger
we'll dive into that a little bit further later. ON
i ALSO i tweeted out three different links every hour

(41:47):

(42:11):
okay do that for. Me but before we do, that go,
ahead do. That, WELL i chat With. Bob, bob you're
ON espn fifteen. Thirty Hi, Bob, Hey, mo what's going?
ON i am sitting here hosting a talk. Show how about?

Speaker 2 (42:25):
Yourself, well you know WHERE i am right?

Speaker 3 (42:28):
Now, Mom, No, Bloodlaw.

Speaker 4 (42:32):
Kentucky, really, yes? Sir? Wow and do you know about
a place Called Burcus.

Speaker 2 (42:40):
Burcus, yes, sir the, Distillery, well.

Speaker 4 (42:47):
YEAH i guess sort. Of it became a bar circus
kind of.

Speaker 3 (42:55):
Atmosphere oh, YES i have not been, there BUT i
am familiar with.

Speaker 2 (42:59):
IT i know what you're talking talking.

Speaker 4 (43:00):
About, yes, well my wife was brought up here for a.
Week she Her she used to work For, Selogman Charles
seligman and The bludweiser. Distributor she. Retired she retired a year,
ago and she cleaned the offices farm and she came

(43:24):
back about a month ago to help them, out and
they hired a new person this, week and she's training,
them and so she's been working. There they paid for
us to stay up, here so we stayed In mudlow
And i'm right across the street from this.

Speaker 3 (43:43):
Place, yeah it's like in the old, theater isn't it it? Is,
yeah it's it's a it's a distillery or a. Brewery
i've not been. There is it? BREWING i GUESS i
could look this.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
Up is it a? Brewery they?

Speaker 9 (43:58):
Do?

Speaker 4 (43:58):
Okay however it's. Closed apparently they weren't doing all that.
Great but, anyway So i'm walking across the. Street we're
going to go out to dinner tonight with our ex
neighbors and. Things SO i was kind of walking the street.
Here WELL i ran into the. Owner really, yeah this,

(44:20):
guy he was coming out of the building actually strangely,
enough AND i knew they weren't. Open i'd talked to
some folks the other night here in. Town SO i
had about a fifteen minute discussion with. Him and this
guy is he used to be in the. Circus apparently
not not as an act or, anything but he said
when he was, younger he would drive the clowns.

Speaker 3 (44:43):
Around oh that's not a JOB i would. WANT i
don't want to drive around a bunch of.

Speaker 4 (44:46):
Clowns So i've driven around a bunch of clowns, more but,
yeah not in the. Circus but, anyway the dude told,
me he, said you know, what we are going to
be open to night for a. While SO i told
Him i'd stop back by later. Tonight and you, know,
Hell i'm right across the. Street so, wow but a

(45:08):
very interesting. Dude and he said he's going to do
the same. Thing he just bought a business In South
africa and he said for eight thousand, bucks he can
do the same thing that cost him here a half
a million. Dollars so like.

Speaker 3 (45:21):
What you you go there and you drink beer and
you eat and, stuff and then there's like what clowns
and elephants and a guy swallowing fire and stuff like.
That when you go to the, circus.

Speaker 4 (45:31):
They don't do all of. That they do it's kind
of like gymnastic acts and that type.

Speaker 3 (45:37):
Stuff and so you're, sitting you're, sitting you're you're sitting
there eating and joining the, meal and there's like people
like tumbling up and down to doing somersaults and cartwheels and.

Speaker 4 (45:46):
Stuff, yeah And i've seen all that at a regular. Bar. Too, yeah,
yeah you, know but, Yeah so, anyway the guy was
very personable and, things and SO i told Him i'd, said,
well we're we're going to eat with our neighbors And
i'll Stop violator tonight and see what's going.

Speaker 2 (46:03):
On well, you, uh will you do me a?

Speaker 3 (46:06):
Favor send me your email address SO i can send
you an invoice for him to pay for the ten
minutes of.

Speaker 2 (46:12):
Advertising oh, yeah, okay, OKAY i will.

Speaker 4 (46:16):
Do, hey, WELL i did have a sports question.

Speaker 3 (46:20):
For you, Though i'm, great?

Speaker 2 (46:22):
Good yeah.

Speaker 4 (46:22):
Sure how did how did you see get to The
crown instead of THE? Nit did they have their? Choice?

Speaker 3 (46:33):
Uh? So essentially because of the The Big. Twelves this
is my understanding of. It the The Big twelves agreement
with The crown and With fox that if you qualified
for The crown that trumped THE. Nit oh, okay so

(46:54):
they were basically one of the automatic qualifiers from The
big twelve among the pool teams that didn't make THE ncaa,
tournament which essentially made the THE nit a non starter
as it relates.

Speaker 4 (47:07):
TO uc, gotcha so who else from The big twelve is?
In are there other? TEAMS i? Guess?

Speaker 3 (47:15):
Yeah YOU ucf is in, it and if The bearcats
win their first, game they could PLAY, ucf who has
a first round GAME i believe Against Oregon. State colorado
is in this. Event the team that finished sixteenth in
The big, twelve dead, last they are in this. Event
utah is in that. EVENT i think The Arizona states
in the. Event those are The big twelve.

Speaker 4 (47:37):
Team, besides the twelve is in.

Speaker 3 (47:39):
It but there's A Big east tie, in So butler De,
Paul villanova's in, It georgetown's in, it and then there's you,
Know George, Washington Boise state To lane's in. IT usc
out of The big. Ten but but the the contract
that the that the event itself has is right now

(48:04):
just with The Big, Twelve Big, east And Big. Ten
so THE acc is not a part of. It THE
sec is not a part of. It so they take
two automatic qualifiers from those three leagues and then they,
RANDOMLY i, guess select the other ten or invite the other,
ten and those schools can choose to accept or.

Speaker 4 (48:22):
Decline, Gotcha, yeah, okay. Yeah have they had anybody diffected
yet that said they're.

Speaker 3 (48:30):
LEAVING i have not seen anybody who has come out
and said they are leaving The university Of. CINCINNATI i
we're gonna play Some West miller audio a little bit later.
On but to the best of my, knowledge nobody has
made it known that they intend to enter the.

Speaker 10 (48:43):
Portal.

Speaker 3 (48:44):
Now the portal doesn't open up for another five. Days
it opens up On, monday and so there's still some.
TIME i would imagine they have a lot of guys
who are trying to figure, out like CAN i because
the crown has an nil, COMPONENT i think there's a
three hundred thousand dollars pool to be split among players
on the winning, team and so you can end the

(49:05):
portal and still play for your. Team that happened during
the college football. Playoffs there were players who played in
the playoff in football who put their name in the
portal but still finished the season with the team they
were on last. Year AND i would imagine you have
some guys who are figuring out whether that's a feasible.
Option i'm sure in some cases the coaches are trying
to figure out whether that's a feasible option for them as.

Speaker 4 (49:25):
Well, gotcha? Gotcha, Okay, No well listen, man nice talking to.

Speaker 3 (49:30):
You.

Speaker 2 (49:30):
Hey enjoy your welcome back to. Town enjoy your.

Speaker 4 (49:33):
STAY i always, well thank you so.

Speaker 2 (49:37):
Much there you.

Speaker 3 (49:38):
Go it's fourteen after four. O'CLOCK i love doing this.
Show hey go to those, LINKS i, SAID i if
you're not on social. MEDIA i sent out links From
Pro Football reference Dot com to The bengals twenty, one twenty,

(50:02):
two and twenty three draft. Classes now the class of twenty,
one those are players who would be finishing their FOURTH
nfl season and aside from the obvious that Being Jamar,
chase who would have been, eligible was, eligible got the
fifth year option picked up by The, bengals all those
other guys are committed to four years with the team

(50:23):
that drafted.

Speaker 2 (50:24):
Them twenty twenty.

Speaker 3 (50:26):
Two, obviously those players have reached their third, year and
so if they get through three years with the team
that drafted, them they have one more year of team
control and that's when the team is maybe starting to
think about a contract. Extension AND i also link to
the twenty twenty three, class so you, know obviously The
bengals have been the most talked about. TEAM i think
they've been the most talking about team in THE nfl

(50:46):
because Of Jamar chase AND T higgins and many have, wondered, Like,
god you, know can you sign both wide? Receivers why
are they doing? This is this going to? Work is
this going to keep them from making the rest of
the team. Better one of my arguments in favor of
what they did is there's no one else to.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
Pay that's a huge component of.

Speaker 3 (51:07):
This now you might, go, well, yeah but there are
players you can go and, sign AND i certainly would
like to see The bengals be a little bit more
active in free agency this go. AROUND i don't know
that they're in. Activity this go around reflects some organizational
philosophical shift from what they have been in recent, years
which is very active in free. Agency BUT i think moving,

(51:29):
forward one of the objectives should be if you have
a situation like, this and god, knows this situation With
jamar and t was, unique but if you have a
situation like, this have the decision be more difficult than it.
Was this became less difficult when you looked at the
twenty twenty one, draft which After Jamar chase and Before

(51:50):
evan McPherson included a bunch of guys that The bengals
were interested in keeping but not investing in long. Term
Jackson carmen is long, Gone joseph O sigh his, back
but just on a one year. Contract cam sample is
back didn't play last, year but just on a one
year Contract Like that's part of.

Speaker 2 (52:08):
This we talk about The.

Speaker 3 (52:09):
Bengals not drafting well and it's impact on the teams
they have put on the field and specifically on, defense
but it also impacts decision. Making in an ideal, world
you would look at T higgins and lump him in
with a large group of players that you wondered about
keeping long. Term the problem with The bengals and how
they have drafted is this was. Easy there's no one

(52:31):
else the twenty twenty two. Class now we're talking about
guys who have gotten. Through if they've made it THREE nfl,
seasons three years with The, bengals jury is still out
and that might be the most generous thing you could
say About Dax hill And Cam taylor Britt is anybody
interested In Zach? Carter what About Tyson? Anderson heck Even Cordel,

(52:53):
vohlson who has been you, know he's established himself as a.
Starter nobody's talking about Extending cordell Volscon even if you
want to be a little bit more. Recent twenty twenty. Three,
now obviously we're talking about players who have only played two,
years but with that third year, looming you would look
At Chase brown as a. CORNERSTONE i think that's fair
to say anybody. Else Andrea yoshavas is a nice story

(53:17):
and certainly not a player that anybody is opposed to
being on this team for a, While but, uh would
it surprise you if you know he kind of plateaued
and by the end of the year you're, like, yeah
kind of a cool. Story got as much as they're
ever going to get out Of Andrea. Yoshavas part of
the issue is signing T higgins was easy because there's
no one. Else just look at those draft. CLASSES Fc

WEEK Fc cincinnati hasn't had a game their most recent,
output and we talked about this late last. WEEK i
think a lot of us had a fear they were
going to go To charlotte and tired legs were going
to become a, problem and you add that to some of.

Speaker 2 (54:41):
Their depth issues and, injuries and.

Speaker 3 (54:45):
Those fears were realized a pretty flat, PERFORMANCE i, think
specifically over the last half of the.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
Game they fell To charlotte to.

Speaker 3 (54:52):
Nothing the good news is they're not playing in any
other competitions right, now and so there's time between. Games
the bad news, is whether it's players playing for their
national team or lingering injury, issues there are a lot
of concerns ABOUT Fc. Cincinnati they come home and play

will start at two. Thirty you can watch it ON

Speaker 2 (55:26):
Afternoon how are you, Hey?

Speaker 12 (55:28):
Mom i'm so happy to be on with. You, Man
it's great to be here. Today love talking about S
C sincneti love watching C sincneti so very delighted to
get to be on the call for a season PAST
mlsc in the past this, Weekend.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
Yeah no.

Speaker 3 (55:40):
QUESTION i wish we were doing this under slightly more
cheery circumstances BECAUSE i think there are a lot of.
CONCERNS i talked about, Injuries we've talked about depth on
the back, Line we've talked about players who are off
playing for their. Countries AND Fc cincinnati fans are feeling
a little anxious right?

Speaker 2 (55:55):
Now can you put any ease to that?

Speaker 12 (55:57):
Anxiety CAN i just invite you back to a Couple
and it was consecutive wooden spoons and last place, finishes
and now when the season doesn't start out four and
oh the sky is?

Speaker 10 (56:09):
Falling what is?

Speaker 12 (56:11):
Happening oh my, GOODNESS i absolutely love that For cincinnati
fans and the faithful there because, man my good Friend
tomy does the play by play. RADIO i remember see
him through all those dark days when he was having
to commentate and put lipstick on a pig when it
was you, know losing four, zero five, zero and and

(56:31):
the likes of. That SO i love. That, nowadays this
constitute a slow, start not Beating tigress in The Conky
Cap Champions, cup not having a dominant start to the,
Season so you, know, yeah it is below the, standard
the new standard that has now been set In. Cincinnati
BUT i think it's far from time to panic BECAUSE

(56:52):
i still think there's a lot of things to break
down and, dissect which we'll do as to WHY i think.
It the brighter days are, ahead AND i still think
things are coming together for this sort of new, look
this life After LUCO Fc.

Speaker 3 (57:04):
Cincinnati, YEAH i have a lot of faith In Pat,
noonan and SO i start there if you're, him and
look that the schedule does ease, up not so much
in terms of caliber of, opponent it's just there's not
going to be nearly as much. Travel they'll have a
lot more time between games for a long stretch now
and so a little bit more time to. Train but
if You're Pat noonan as you start to get this

(57:25):
back on, course what's at the top of your to do?

Speaker 12 (57:28):
List, well first of, ALL i think That Pat noonon
And Chris albrighty deserve all of the faith and what
they're doing in their vision of this club and how
they see. Fit and it makes a, big big moves this,
OFFSEASON i mean blockbuster type, moves Having luco go out
the door bringing in A vander as, well And dank

(57:49):
looks every bit of the type of number nine that
every coach just salivates to have on their. Team you
know it is it is different this, year AND i
think that what eight games in twenty five day is
an absolute grind because you're not one hundred percent match
fit yet you're playing very difficult opponents and you're having
to do it in a, short congested period of, time

(58:11):
so you're asking a lot and just, aerobically it's difficult
to get to that point to be at your your.
Peak you don't want to be at your peak as
we sit in Mid. March if you, were that's going
to be brutal for you down the stretch of the.
Season so this team's still coming. TOGETHER i think that
there have been signs and glimpses here and, there BUT
i Think pat new would be the first one to

(58:31):
tell you they haven't put it together for prolonged stretches of.
Times and the game Against CHARLOTTE i think was disappointing
because that is a difficult. Matchup BUT i think now
the expectation is for E Fc cincinnati every matchup they
go into more difficult or just slightly less, difficult because
there are no easy games in this league. Anymore they
expect to be able to compete and to fight and

(58:52):
be there till the very, end and it just didn't
feel that way Against. CHARLOTTE i think that now being
out of THE Tonkyaft Champions cup really will. Help it
sounds funny to say that you get knocked out of
a tournament and it's, like you, know that's. BENEFICIAL i
do think it is beneficial for the fact that you're
getting now regular stretches of periodization of your, training how
you want to get working together with a game plan

(59:15):
for the team that you're facing In you're getting guys
Like matt Me osky has put a few days back
together now and when the guy When dank comes back from,
International dutio get a chance to try to get all
your stars on the field together for you, know more
than what just two times they have there in this.
Season so it will turn a, CORNER i think sooner
rather than.

Speaker 4 (59:32):
Later presse.

Speaker 3 (59:33):
Sinthetic there were, times and you Mentioned Lucho acosta over
the last couple of, seasons AND i know we were
talking about this a year, ago even wondering if maybe
they were asking him to do a little bit too.
Much but there were times over the last couple of
years where it felt, like you, know on a night
where maybe other stuff wasn't, working they could Have lucho
bail them. Out and, obviously you, Know evander comes here

(59:53):
and there's tons of, comparisons and look he. Was he
was extraordinarily active On saturday And. CHARLOTTE i think he
had six. Shots obviously none of them found the back
of the, net but he was very. Active if You're Pat,
noonan do you kind of look at a guy like
that in the short term and, go we might need
you to pull A Luco acosta for us while we
figure all that other stuff.

Speaker 12 (01:00:11):
Out you, know it's such a good. POINT i Think Luco.
Acosta it's not a game. Plan it's not like you
know The Will ferrell Movie kicking And screaming back in the,
day where you just have the players and all the
arrows point to that one, player one of The, italians
and he passes them and they go. Dribble everybody in, score.
RIGHT i, mean you had a Special argentinian number ten
And Lucio acosta who could just naturally do. THAT i

(01:00:35):
don't think it's fair to Compare evander To Luciano. ACOSTA
i think they're different. PLAYERS i Think evander affects the
game differently Than. Luco luco will go find the, ball
he'll get on.

Speaker 7 (01:00:47):
It he loves to.

Speaker 12 (01:00:48):
Dribble luco has this incredible. Ability it's like he's not
even really worried about the first defender because he knows
he's gonna get by. Him it's whereas the second and
third defender that's coming and to provide. Help And i'm
not quite Sure evander is that exact same. Player when
you get the big price, TAG i understand that you
want to compare, them and it makes complete sense to

(01:01:10):
have that expectation with the big price, tag but they're
different and if you think back to When evander started
out In, portland he actually started very. Slow it was
it was one of those that people were questioning can
even perform in this? League is this is a good
fit for this? League now he answered those questions and
no short order and was stellar and had astounding numbers last,

(01:01:33):
year and that's obviously Why cincinnati go and purchased. Them
BUT i think you start to understand when you're in
game situations where one player likes to, go and then
how you can best serve. Him so you, know if
you're A, vander now you're looking you're, going, Okay, well
the way That goobo plays is different than the way
That denk plays or That origano. Plays all very very

(01:01:54):
very good, players yet they have different tendencies about. Them
SO i think you've seen moments and brief instance his
works come. Together BUT i think Trusting evander is never
a bad. Idea you just stick with the process and
trust what the coaches in the in the scouting department
has seen to be able to make that. Change BECAUSE
i promise you do not move on From acossa unless

(01:02:16):
you find a player that you think can maintain that
high expectation that is within that building and WITHIN Tql
stadium each and every.

Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
Week Jamie WATSON mls season past two point thirty On,
saturday quickly On. Atlanta they win their first, match they
score three goals Against, montreal they have scored exactly one
goal since and haven't. Won breakdown This atlanta team for.

Speaker 12 (01:02:37):
Me, Yeah now they're going to miss about eight first
team players through international duty this. WEEK i mean it's
going to be a fragile time For. Atlanta and the
fact that they lost at home to Enter. Miami they
haven't BEAT Fc cincinnati and the last six matches Sin
seti's three to zero to three in that stretch against. Them,
YEAH i mean a little bit of backup against the
wall right. Now one two and one to start the

(01:02:58):
season off For atlanta bar below what they expected to
be a depleted. Squad If i'm S C, CINCINNATI i
think the first fifteen minutes can really be key to
be able to try to put their foot on the throttle,
pressure try to get an early, goal try to get
the fans Of Tikio stadium off their feet as they
do in full voice and you know The bailey end and. Everything,
man it's an incredible. Atmosphere it's daunting if you're playing

(01:03:21):
against the team there and then they Get atlanta right.
Now the first goal it is always important in every match,
mode but especially in this. Match it could Give atlanta
a reason to, think oh, no here we go, again
or it could get it to S C cincinnati to,
thought hey here we, go let's go get a second.
One be very very important for the first goal this, weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
Well, said have a great, call enjoy your time At.
Cincinnati hopefully we can do it again as the season moves.

Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
On thanks so.

Speaker 7 (01:03:45):
Much Hey, mo you do a.

Speaker 4 (01:03:46):

Thirty the men's golf coach at The university Of. Cincinnati
head coach at The university Of, Cincinnati Doug martin said
so about the bearcats recent victory in The JOHNNY oh
At Sea, Island. Georgia, QUOTE i can honestly SAY i

(01:05:08):
have never seen such a comeback in all my years.

Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
Coaching this gives us a lot to build.

Speaker 3 (01:05:13):
On they win their First i'm, sorry their second event
OF i think we call this the spring part of their.
Schedule they win The Johnny, oh and now they head out.
West they'll be in The Oregon Duck invitational next week
and then The Wyoming Desert intercollegiate In. Arizona the men's
golf coach head coach at The university Of cincinnati Is Doug.

(01:05:34):
Martin an incredible, comeback unlike anything you have experienced in this.

Speaker 2 (01:05:38):
Sport why was it so? Amazing, WELL i think.

Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
You, know first of, all you, know we've we've gotten
off to a little bit of a slow start this,
spring and you, know we really. Haven't we haven't putted
as well as we need putt to really play at
the level that That i'm hoping. For and you, know
we're we're sitting in seventh place with about eight or
nine holes to go in the, tournament and we just

(01:06:04):
had three guys excuse, me two Guys birdie three their last,
four one Guy birdy two of his last, four and
one Guy birdie one of his last. Four and you,
know the, field the shield was very tightly. CONTESTED i mean,
everybody basically twelve of the thirteen teams that were in this,
tournament you, know they're all we're all kind of in

(01:06:26):
that last ten to twelve. Spots in THE ncaa projected
field right. Now so you, know it's obviously a significant,
week but anytime you have teams that are that, Close
and in college, golf the thing that makes college golf
so unique is you're playing five guys counting your four best,
scores so you can play start the round five shots,

(01:06:49):
behind play one, hole they make five, boguies you make five,
verdies and you've picked up four. Shots so the change
and you know how how crazy is you, know as a,
coach one of the things that makes you, know our
sport unique is it's myself and my assistant trying to
watch five guys play, golf you, know which is which

(01:07:10):
is nearly, impossible you, Know so we're we're one sport
where we don't always get to see the. Action and
so you, Know we're coming down the into the round
yesterday And i'm with one of our freshmen and really
trying to you, know help him with his game and
understand how to manage his game and shoot a. Score
and So i'm not around any of the other four,

(01:07:32):
guys and my assistant sends me a text and he, goes,
Hey ryan's made, One connor's made, two And michael's just made.
Three three in a row And i'm, like, Well leo
just made, two AND i, said we got one hole
left and.

Speaker 6 (01:07:51):
We're with the.

Speaker 1 (01:07:52):
Freshman so we're we're doing all this through, text and you,
know we have a leaderboard that, is you, know respectfully,
live but you, know it all depends when the scoring
is is put in and the freshman the last hole
makes about a fifteen footer across the green and we
finish up and the leaderboard shows, that you, know we're

(01:08:14):
winning by a. Shot AND i, MEAN i was, speechless,
honestly Because i've never seen. Anything i've never seen it
happen that. Fast you, know it, was you, know it's
It's i'm just so proud of my guys really for
hanging in. There and you, know it's just. ME i
just even, Today mom's sitting here, today And i've talked

(01:08:36):
to a couple of people THAT i, said you, KNOW
i really don't know THAT i believe it, happened but
but but it was just it's college golf at its.
Best and you, know it's just our sport right now
is probably as competitive as it's ever been and as
deep as it's ever. Been so it was any any
time you, win you want to celebrate a.

Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
Victory, YEAH i. CAN i can understand.

Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
That you you sort of kind of answered what one
of my questions was going to, be which, is you
obviously can't be with every golfer at the same. Time
so what does a head coach of a golf program
do during an event like?

Speaker 1 (01:09:10):
This, well my, assistant my assistant and we do a
lot of our coaching at home before we get on the.
Road and then you have to have the trust level
of the players that you've kind of built through your.
Program so right, now we have two, seniors two, juniors
and one freshman in our lineup at the, moment and

(01:09:34):
all of those older players we have spent time with
them at a. Tournament so WHAT i basically did this
past week WAS i took the, FRESHMAN i walked with,
him coached, him and just kind, of you, know really
tried to get him to, understand you, know getting to
the right yard, age picking the right, club you, know

(01:09:57):
picking the get in the wind direction, right just all those.
Things and then probably in another, year another year and
a half will turn him off and we'll take another.
Freshman and so you're basically you're basically doing you, know
you're you're coaching in live action with your player and
you can you basically can do everything for him but

(01:10:18):
hit the. Shot so you know he was you, know
we finished up the. Tournament he was like coaching, man he,
goes that was unbelievably, helpful you being with me with every,
shot and you, know you're Just college golf happens so.
Fast the game. Is you, know you go from junior
golf to college, golf and it's like any other. Sport you,

(01:10:38):
know you very rarely see a freshman play. Football you're
very rarely see a, freshman you, know kill it in.
Basketball you know there's that there's that line of, experience
and you, know we're trying to get these guys to
where they can learn to do it on their.

Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Own On, monday you had an eight hour.

Speaker 3 (01:10:54):
Delay NOW i DON'T i don't like it when the
line is too long to get a drink at the.

Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
Turn how do you handle an eight hour? Delay what
do you do during that?

Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
Time so you Know Sea, island we were right out
on the peninsula and we had, well it was you,
know if you watched any of the playoffs between mclroy
and jj, spawn you saw the crazy winds that were
blowing At. Sawgrass, well we had those same, wins except
we had gusts up to forty miles an. Hour so we.

(01:11:24):
Played we played one, hole and at all these tournaments
we have like a group me chat to where you,
know if there's a rules official needed or, something you,
know we've got that on our. Phone and So i'm
on the first hole with this freshman and my group
me is just blowing. UP i, mean just keep getting these. Notifications,
well and its coaches were, saying, listen the ball won't

(01:11:46):
stay on the, green and so it was blowing so.
Hard out there on the peninsula were like five holes
where you dropped the ball in the middle of the
green and the wind just blew it off into a
bunker off the, green and so we had to wait
till till the wind. Subsided and most of our events
in college golf for fifty four, holes and you, know

(01:12:06):
we had that, delay and we waited until the wind
gusts went down to twenty, eight believe it or, not
and then we went back out at about four point
thirty that afternoon and played twelve holes knowing that we
could get twenty four in easily On tuesday and that
would complete our thirty six whole. Event you, know it's
not fifty four, holes which we, desire but still it

(01:12:28):
was the, championship.

Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
Yeah and a well earned and hard fought.

Speaker 3 (01:12:32):
One how do you choose which events your team's going
to play?

Speaker 1 (01:12:35):
In so it comes a lot down to the. Field,
so you, KNOW i have a certain way THAT i
like to start my spring, Semester so we go To
Hilton head and play In Michigan state's, event and then
we go here At Sea island to Play rutgers. Event
and so both of those fields have a couple Of southern,

(01:12:57):
schools but they're Primarily big ten and a Few big
twelve schools Like Kansas, State Iowa, State cincinnati were At Collington,
river and then this week it WAS us And kansas
At Sea. Island so we're really, basically you, know we
don't play at conference. Schedule the only thing we do
is we meet at the end Of april and we

(01:13:19):
play at conference. Championship so that's really the only time
we ever see all of the other. Teams so you,
know we we BASICALLY i pick it a lot of
golf courses THAT i think are great for my kids
to play an experience where we played At Sea. Island
that's where THE RSM Pga tour event. Is we we

(01:13:42):
Leave friday to go out To, Eugene, oregon To Eugene Country.
Club that's where the national championship was five years. Ago
it's the first time we've gone out. West, so you,
KNOW i try to put my players in front of
every situation so at the end of their careers here
if they decide to turn professionals that they're ready to.

Speaker 3 (01:13:58):
Go do you ever nead a guy to do any
like advanced scouting and you, know go just ask the course.

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
Out you, KNOW i could be.

Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
Available, okay IF i told IF i told you where
we've been so far this, spring because we we do
all online schooling in the spring and so we can
kind of go and practice before some of these. Trips
we've we've been to some unbelievable places already this.

Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
Semester, wow all, right, well, uh you know, again if
if you're, like you know, what we need somebody to
get the lay of the, land keep me in.

Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
Mind, Okay, hey if you ever want to come with,
us just let me. Know let me.

Speaker 3 (01:14:29):
Know you say that WHEN i WHEN i send you
like a text going, hey. Coach i'm in this.

Speaker 1 (01:14:34):
Weekend just let me, know let me, know and we'll
let you come along and see what college golf is all.

Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
About that'd be, uh that'd be a.

Speaker 3 (01:14:41):
Blast, well congratulations on the win and THE johnnyo and,
uh hopefully we can do it.

Speaker 2 (01:14:46):
Again this is the season. Unfolds.

Speaker 1 (01:14:48):
Yeah, ABSOLUTELY i appreciate you having me. ON i really
enjoy your show and love what you do here for
the for the town Of cincinnati with with your program each.

Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
Day, well that's very kind of the. Coach thank you so.

Speaker 3 (01:14:57):

program at The university of Sincinn. I, coach thank, You.

Speaker 1 (01:15:04):

Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
You that sounds that sounds that sounds kind of. Fun road.

Speaker 10 (01:15:09):
Trip.

Speaker 3 (01:15:10):
Huh hang out with the golf. Team broadcast, live broadcast,
live carry a bag like they're you, know they're they're
out competing and there's a lot on the. Line their
version of golf probably does not have the accouterments that
my version of golf.

Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
Has but that's. Okay that's. Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:15:30):

Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
Thirty THAT'S. Aweso it's four after. Five I'm.

Speaker 3 (01:17:25):
Alegar this IS espn fifteen. Thirty thank you for thank
you for joining us. Today uh in fifteen, minutes we're
gonna go To, DAYTON.

Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
Mi alma mater hosting the first Four xavier In.

Speaker 3 (01:17:40):
Texas tip off is roughly four hours let's say four
hours and twenty minutes. Away as you AND i both,
know they're not starting that game on. Time Paul, frischner
mister College, basketball is. There he will join us in
just about fifteen. Minutes as we get, said for that, game,
TONIGHT i. DO i asked this.

Speaker 2 (01:17:59):
To Rick boring, before And i'll throw it To Paul.

Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
FRISHNER i think how the season gets categorized is largely
gonna hinge on tonight's. GAME i remember that twenty fourteen,
season which it's not entirely apples to, apples because in twenty,
Fourteen xavier was transitioning to The Big.

Speaker 2 (01:18:19):
East you, KNOW i may forget.

Speaker 3 (01:18:22):
That that was the first year of the New Big
east With xavier in, it and it wasn't a great.
Team they went ten and, eight finished in third place
in The Big. East they PLAYED Nc state At Udi
arena in the first four and they lost that. Game
AND i Remember Chris mack was on our tournament preview

(01:18:42):
show two years, ago and he AND i even laughed about,
it like if you play in that game and you,
lose and they lost by fifteen, points it's like you were.

Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
Not even in the.

Speaker 3 (01:18:50):
Tournament LIKE i had an, argument not an, argument but
a discussion with somebody in the hallway here who is,
like you, know if you're in, that you're not in.
Tournament well you are if you, Win, like if you
win that, game you are in the. Tournament AND i
think If xavier wins tonight and they play On, friday
and they'll have more than a puncher's chance against An

(01:19:12):
illinois team that. Did i've heard people say Like illinois
was a roller. Coaster, well the roller coaster was up
toward the end of the regular. Season, obviously first things,
First musketeers have to contend With Trey johnson And texas.
TONIGHT i have a hard time saying the season is
not a success if they win. Tonight but IF i
would have, said excuse me to ANY xu fan back In,
October xavier goes to the first, four they're one of

(01:19:35):
the last four teams in the, tournament they go to
the first four and, LOSE i think everybody would have
said that's not a successful. SEASON i think you could
apply context and talk about the injuries they've had to
deal with and not Having troy orri From Long Beach.
STATE i think if they win, tonight it's for the most,
part and there are. EXCEPTIONS i have a difficult time

(01:19:58):
if a team makes the turn and loses in the
first round calling the season an unmitigated disaster an unmitigated,
FAILURE i don't think you could do. That If xavier
wins tonight and then loses To. Illinois will see what
would then happen if they did win, tonight BECAUSE i
would give them more than a puncher's chance Against. Illinois

(01:20:19):
but if you get to the first four and, lose
it's hard to feel like this was a successful. Season
so we will See Paul frishner JOINS us in just
about fifteen minutes and we are looking forward to. That,
Also i'll have some audio from last Night's Wes miller's,
show the head coach of The, BEARCATS i believe with
his first public comments SINCE uc season came to an

(01:20:41):
end or they're stay in The Big Twelve tournament came
to an end last. Week, obviously the season is not.
Over cincinnati is going to play in The College Basketball
crown In Las. Vegas that tournament starts FOR. Uc they
play in thirteen. Days it just how they've done this
in regard to timing is is. Fascinating and you're gonna

(01:21:05):
Hear wes talk about this a little bit as it
relates to players that he may or may not have
available for this. Event but just like think about, It
Selection sunday was four days. Ago we are going to
play the first four and then we're gonna play thirty
two games over the next two days in the first

(01:21:25):
round of the, tournament sixteen games On saturday And. Sunday
they're gonna play the Entire sweet, sixteen which that's eight,
games the Entire elite, eight which that's four, games and
then The crown's finally gonna.

Speaker 2 (01:21:39):
Start The Cincinnati.

Speaker 3 (01:21:41):
Raids are gonna play more than one regular season baseball
game before The crown. Starts SO i think what they've
done with this in regards to timing is interesting, because
and this is not just A uc, thing but how
many teams are gonna field skeleton rosters or put on
the floor skeleton rosters now they're is an nil. Component

(01:22:02):
how many coaches will be coaching players that they know
that they have been told by those players they're not coming,
back or how many coaches will be coaching players that
they've told you will not come. BACK i think how
this plays out is.

Speaker 2 (01:22:17):
Is going to be.

Speaker 3 (01:22:17):
Interesting so you'll Hear Wes miller coming up in just
about twenty five. MINUTES I Charlie goldsmith does an awesome.
Job Charlie, goldsmith you hear all the time On sincy
three sixty and. If when that show, launched one of
the things we made an effort to do is they've
got a certain group of guests that are, theirs and

(01:22:39):
we've got a certain group of guests that are, ours
and then there's a group that we kind of.

Speaker 2 (01:22:43):
Share charlie would fit in the category of their.

Speaker 3 (01:22:46):
Guest And i'm often envious Because charlie always brings a
lot to the. Table he does a, Newsletter Charlie's, chalkboard
and it's It's reds And bengal centric and sometimes based
on what's going on in the news sports. Wise he'll
crank out multiple newsletters per, day but there's usually. One

(01:23:08):
the one that came out today does a very good
job of illustrating two. Things number, one the fact that
The reds went to spring training with a lot of
question marks and they still have just as, many if not.
More this Isn't charlie. Writing this is me SAYING i
have no inside information And i've not been asked to
Examine Tyler stevenson's. OBLIQUE i have a really scary, feeling

(01:23:32):
a really bad, feeling that This Tyler stevenson obleaque thing
is going to be something that we talk about all season,
long or at least for a larger chunk of the
season than we would. LIKE i Hope i'm wrong about.
That but the other thing that he does is he kind,
of in a very brief, manner just goes through all
the uncertainty that everybody else in The National League central

(01:23:55):
is dealing with right now from The. Cubs And i'm
not going to give Away charlie's. Content go subscribe for.
Yourself cubs have lost their first two, games lost them In.
Japan those are regular season. Games they've got rotation, Questions
they've got one of the worst catching situations in. Baseball,
YES i think most would Consider chicago the, favorite but

(01:24:19):
they're not a team without question. Marks as the season,
begins The cardinals did not try this. Offseason like you
could say whatever you want about how majestic The cardinals
organization has been throughout its, history they sat out this.
Offseason the only thing they tried to do this offseason
was they tried to Trade Nolan, aernado maybe for, better

(01:24:41):
maybe for.

Speaker 2 (01:24:42):
Worse they did not. Try they did.

Speaker 3 (01:24:44):
Nothing The Pittsburgh pirates and Their dufest owner sat around
and seemed content to waste a really, good promising pitching
staff by not upgrading an awful. Offense The Milwaukee, brewers
And charlie points this, out they no longer Have Willie
Damas Bryce terrang was supposed to replace. Him he's already

(01:25:06):
dealing with the shoulder, issue so they're going to have
to move him to second. Base they've got five starting
pitchers on the injured.

Speaker 10 (01:25:12):
List.

Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
NOW i respect the hell out of The Milwaukee brewers
because in a small market they have figured out a
way to be good almost every single. Year but major
question marks there and then There's. Cincinnati so on one,
hand you can, go, Well, god The reds have some.
Questions The reds have some injury. Issues The reds have
concerns about their, offense and golly g so does everybody.
Else just, once, though wouldn't it be awesome to look

(01:25:35):
at a list of these Teams pittsburgh And Saint louis
And chicago And, milwaukee and read about their problems and
point and. Laugh it would be easier to do that
if The reds had a better. Offense this is not
so much a reflection or a reaction to how they've
performed recently in The Cactus. League they've had a lot
of games Where they simply have not hit and very

(01:25:57):
few guys are putting up statistically very good. SEASONS a
lot of us hope that In arizona a really good
competition for outfield spots would. Emerge hasn't, Happened or that
some guys would put up such scary looking, numbers good
looking numbers that you started to be excited about what
they could accomplish this. Year that hasn't. Happened, hell the
most significant thing to happen among all the outfielders Was

(01:26:19):
Will benson got sent to minor league. Camp, Now Austin
hayes is a good, signing but a lot of us
back In january wondered about The reds, offense is it
going to be good? ENOUGH i am not panicking because
of what they haven't done in spring. Training WHAT i
will do is use spring training to bring up the same.
Question are we sure this team's going to hit? Enough

(01:26:40):
or are we going to spend a lot of time
wondering shouldn't they have added one more? Bat by the,
WAY i think the answer is, Yes and you know
HOW i suspect very strongly the answer is, yes because
the moment we start talking about what The reds need
at the, deadline which those conversations kicking the gear almost In.

Speaker 2 (01:27:00):
Stanley the moment we do, that.

Speaker 3 (01:27:02):
Assuming The reds are at least pseudo in, it the
answer to the question is going to be they need a,
Bat LIKE i could tell you now, now they also
may need a relief. Pitcher you can never have. Enough
they me need a starting. Pitcher you can never have.
Enough BUT i feel very, strongly very confident that when
we start like legitimately talking about what The reds need

(01:27:24):
to go get at the, deadline we'll see if they
actually do get. It the first answer is going to
be they need a. Bat maybe it's an outfield, bat
maybe it's somewhere. Else by the, way you add to
this The Tyler stevenson. Situation he is one of their
best three or four, hitters so Is Spencer. Steer LIKE
i wondered and a lot of us did back In

(01:27:44):
january Early, february shouldn't they go get one more? Bat
and now you can't help but ask that even more
and with a little bit more urgency because Of steer
And stevenson and the uncertainty surrounding.

Speaker 2 (01:27:56):
Them BUT i promise, you.

Speaker 3 (01:27:58):
Even if those guys are healthy when we, start we're
talking about what could they do with the. Deadline the
answer is at least going to include find a. Bat
IF i know that, now that tells me they should
have addressed that, already and they, Didn't AND i wonder
how much that's gonna come back to bite.

Speaker 2 (01:28:13):
Them maybe it.

Speaker 13 (01:28:14):
Doesn't but also you look look at how vulnerable everybody
is in this, Division like we could do the whole
like go get a bat at the, Deadline you can't
focus on that In march And, april and then you,
know yell and scream about how they have to get
off to a great.

Speaker 3 (01:28:31):
Start now last year they. Did they started nine and,
six which is it's. Good that's like six hundred Baseball,
like if you win nine out of every fifteen games
you're gonna do this, year you're gonna run away with
The National League. Central but as the season, begins it
feels like all four teams that Aren't cincinnati in this
division are dealing with, stuff significant, stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
And The reds are.

Speaker 3 (01:28:56):
Too wouldn't they be better equipped to take advantage of
this time frame when all the other teams are trying
to figure out stuff if they had just one more
back and for what it's.

Speaker 2 (01:29:09):
Worth Luis robert is perhaps still out there and could
be had in a trade.

Speaker 3 (01:29:17):
Quarter after five poll questions on our show are On
twitter At. Molegar thanks To United Heartland insurance with three
offices in the Area, Hamilton, cincinnati And Northern, kentucky they
could take care of any one of your insurance needs
no matter where you. Live go to uhins dot. Com

(01:29:37):
Should bengals fans be rooting for The steelers to Sign Aaron?
Rodgers most of you say. Yes Aaron rodgers will be
forty two years old by the end of this football.
Season Aaron rodgers in his career is the quarterback who
has made the most amount of throws that have legitimately wowed.

(01:29:58):
ME a supreme, talent a first Ballot hall Of. Famer
but you talk about stuff, now a guy who brings
with him a lot of. Stuff Pittsburgh steelers have an awesome.
Organization we make fun of the fact That Mike tomlin
never has a losing. Season the floor for that franchise is,
very very. High over the last seven eight, years it

(01:30:22):
has felt like the ceiling is very. Low when the
playoffs began this, year, granted The bengals weren't in. Them
nobody was talking about The steelers winning THE. Afc and
then when the playoffs started and The Baltimore ravens just
lined up and kicked the crap out of, him and
then you remembered how bad they were offensively down the.

(01:30:42):
Stretch you, went, oh, yeah. Yeah The tomlin thing is.
Fun he never has a losing season and he's cool
on hard. Knocks the ceiling for that franchise in recent
years has been. LOW i don't Think Aaron rodgers at
this age raises the. Ceiling i'm for anything that doesn't
raise The Pittsburgh steelers ceiling this year or down the.

(01:31:03):
Road and god, knows a soon to be forty two
year old quarterback does not raise your ceiling down the.

Speaker 2 (01:31:08):
Road so go ahead and do. It bring them To.

Speaker 3 (01:31:11):

eighty FIVE uccc two right lanes blocked off from an

got traffic stop and go from The Ohio kentucky line

(01:32:52):

kenwood AND i seventy. One i'm At ezelek with traffic this.

Speaker 7 (01:33:01):

Speaker 2 (01:33:02):

Speaker 2 (01:33:12):
Catchy mister College.

Speaker 3 (01:33:14):
Basketball Paul, frishner host Of The Rebound, rundown does work

talk college, hoops specifically The, musketeers he joins, US i
guess you're joining us From?

Speaker 2 (01:33:34):
Dayton is that? Correct i'm not right.

Speaker 11 (01:33:37):

making it drive up north and it's a beautiful day
most So i'm outside right now and join the phone
call talking oops to, you and then we'll make our
way up to seventy.

Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
FIVE i think a lot of us view this game
As texas has the best, Player xavier has the best,
team and quite, FRANKLY i think they have the better.

Speaker 2 (01:33:55):
Coach is that a fair way to look at THIS i.

Speaker 11 (01:33:58):
Don't THINK i could have said it much better right,
there because the way That texas has built this team this.

Speaker 1 (01:34:03):
Year.

Speaker 11 (01:34:03):
NOW i did an interview on the rebound rundown earlier
this week with one Of texas beat, writers and he,
said it's basically AN aau, team. Right it's a collection of.
Individuals it's not a great. Team they went thirteen and
fifteen this year in meaningful GAMES mo they went nineteen
and fifteen, overall but they went six to zero in
their by, games so in really the games that, mattered
they had a losing record thirteen and. Fifteen that's kind

(01:34:24):
of unprecedented to see a team like that make THE ncaa.
Tournament they're, here they're going to, play and they have
a top five draft, pick at least a top ten draft,
pick probably a top five draft, pick And Trey, johnson
a freshman who was a absolute stud in THE. Sec
the SEC's leading scorer is a, FRESHMAN i, mean just
a phenomenal. Player six six can score at all three.

(01:34:48):
Levels what do The musketeers do to counteract? THAT i
think in the last few, Weeks xavier's done a really
good job of taking away the opponent's best. Player you
saw that Against ryan Kok runner in that game Against
creighton As tentas a couple of weeks. Ago Cam jones
didn't really kill you.

Speaker 4 (01:35:02):
Last week In New.

Speaker 11 (01:35:04):
York he had a good, game but he didn't really kill.
You So i'm interested to see What Seawn miller and
this coaching staff does tonight Because zaver.

Speaker 4 (01:35:10):
Is going to get their.

Speaker 11 (01:35:11):
Looks xaver's for sure going to get their looks from.
Three texas is not the most cohesive defensive.

Speaker 3 (01:35:17):
UNIT i think you AND i talked about this when
you were At Madison Square garden after The marquette. Game
AND i feel bad bringing this up because the Way
xavier defended over the final one third of the season
was not reflected by how they defended laid Against, marquette
and So i'm just kind of, curious and it's it's
not a very large sample, size but it killed their

(01:35:37):
stay In New york and put their status as a bubble.
Team it crystallized it very. Much So i'm kind of curious,
defensively which Which xavier team shows up the one that
couldn't get stops against the Good marquette team or the
one that routinely got stops when it needed it over
the final three or four weeks of the.

Speaker 11 (01:35:55):
Season, yeah and that's the biggest question, tonight because if
you have a collection of individuals on This texas team
and they fall asleep sometimes, defensively And xavier can score
and get their, shots they can get their looks from, three,
well if you're giving it back up on the other,
end it's state the, obvious it's going to be a long.
Night so For xavier defensively, HERE i don't think you're

(01:36:16):
too intimidated By Caden. Schedrick they're six to eleven big
man inside when you Have Zach fremantle to counteract, THAT
i wouldn't be too intimidated By texas's size on the.
Interior they're a very athletic team that can get to the.
Basket Arthur kaluma is a name that if you're A
xavier fan listening to, this you recognize from two years.
Ago he played a couple of seasons At creighton before

(01:36:36):
he went To Kansas state and now has ended up In.
Texas so they have, athletes they have great athletic guards.
Wings can they get the ball Into Cayden? Schedrick can he?
Score he's not A Ryan. Kulchbrenner he's not somebody that's
gonna or at least shouldn't Give xavier a ton of fits.
Tonight but, Yes, bo you're exactly. Right Can Dalen swain

(01:36:57):
be the defensive stopper That xavier need them to? Be
Can Jerome hunter give, you you, know one or two
four minute segments On Kayden schedrick.

Speaker 4 (01:37:05):
If he has.

Speaker 11 (01:37:05):
To those are the kinds of things that you're really
looking for.

Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
TONIGHT i think there's a great amount of, optimism and you,
Know Sean miller's not going to want to do, this
and maybe even a lot Of xavier fans aren't going
to want to do. This BUT i think there's a
great amount of optimism that if they can get this win,
tonight that they don't necessarily have to be. Done that
the way this team has played down the stretch would
put them under the category of team you don't want

(01:37:28):
to play In, march which would apply to a team Like,
illinois who they would face On. Friday they obviously have
to contend With Trey johnson, tonight and they have to
beat a team from the best conference in the country In.

Speaker 2 (01:37:39):
Texas but do.

Speaker 3 (01:37:40):
You view this team as having the capability to stick
around to this tournament for a?

Speaker 2 (01:37:44):
While no.

Speaker 11 (01:37:46):
Doubt AND i think if you look at the coaching,
staff to go back to your point from, Earlier Adam,
cohen the associate head, coach he has experienced in this
game tonight. Twice in, fact he was on The vanderbilt
staff that lost To Wichitas state a handful of years
ago in the First foreign Dayton That Wichita state team
then went and Smacked Sean Miller's arizona team in the

(01:38:06):
first round of THE ncaa. Tournament and so the coaching
staff has experience from both sides of. This in, Fact Bryan,
anderson who's also an assistant On xavier's, staff he played
in that game For. Arizona so there's a lot of
experience all over the. Place and that's WHY i, say
if You're Sean, miller you know that a team that
wins their game In dayton and then has to go
play the next. Weekend you, know a couple days later

(01:38:29):
doesn't really matter in the end the matchup, wise because
right Now illinois preparing For xavier and For. Texas if
You're xavier and you walk up To milwaukee and you
have a chance to Beat, illinois, who, yeah their best
this year mo has been a two, seed but if
their worst has lost To, RUTGERS i would be very
confident IF i Was xavier that you get a win

(01:38:51):
under your belt tonight for a team that doesn't have
a lot OF ncaa tournament, Experience you get that weight
off your, back you win a. Game that's WHY i
think a lot of people would say that The musketeers
are dangerous in this.

Speaker 3 (01:39:02):
Thing how does this season get categorized if they lose
tonight versus if they.

Speaker 11 (01:39:07):
WIN i thought a lot about, that AND i think
taking a step back and looking at what they, lost
the fact that you lost your starting center just a
few weeks before the season started and you had to
readjust expectations to what this team could. BE i think
the fact that they won seven in a row down

(01:39:27):
the stretch and found their way into the tournament despite
all of the, Adverse Zach fremantle going out for three,
weeks missing two of the most important games on their,
schedule all the things that they had to shuffle through
to then hear their name. CALLED i understand if people
would say that it wasn't as successful as a lot
of people had hoped coming into the. SEASON i don't

(01:39:48):
think there's any doubt about that for a team that
had sky high. Expectations but at the same, time they
were able to go thirteen and seven in conference. Play
they earned it by At Madison Square. Garden they were
number four seed in The Big East. Tournament they checked
a lot of boxes to where it didn't look pretty
if you followed the team all, Season but just looking
on paper at the, resume it's hard to fault a

(01:40:10):
lot of What zavier did this year in the, End
so you, KNOW i would, say if they lose tonight
the season still to make the tournament after losing your
starting center right before the season, STARTED i would still
say it's a. Success BUT i understand it didn't meet
the expectations that a lot of people said going into the.

Speaker 3 (01:40:26):
Year will you be offering comprehensive coverage Of Mount Saint
mary's Versus.

Speaker 11 (01:40:29):
American you know what's, Funny mo my broadcast partner from
WHEN i was in the minor leagues three years ago
or four years ago now man time fly twenty twenty.

Speaker 4 (01:40:38):
One he's the voice of The.

Speaker 11 (01:40:39):
Mount SO i will be up there AND i will
be cheering ard For Mount Saint.

Speaker 4 (01:40:42):

Speaker 3 (01:40:44):

a lot going. On you got to get on the.
Road thank you so. Much we'll talk.

Speaker 2 (01:40:49):
Soon thank.

Speaker 11 (01:40:50):
You, yeah you got it most all.

Speaker 2 (01:40:52):
Right that's our.

Speaker 3 (01:40:52):
Guy Paul, fishner mister College, basketball host of The Rebound,
rundown part of The Shawn miller Podcast xavier And texas

twenty four on seven HUNDRED wlw all, Right Wes miller

Speaker 5 (01:41:10):

Year last night was the Final Wes miller radio show
of the year With Dan horde And Terry, nelson the,
first i, believe the first public comments since The bearcats
came home From Kansas city last. Week you, see we'll
play and The crown Against paul in thirteen days In.

(01:43:22):
Vegas Here's Dan horde And Wes miller discussing the benefits
of playing in this.

Speaker 14 (01:43:29):
Event what are the benefits of playing in The College Basketball.

Speaker 9 (01:43:33):
Crown, well the benefit is, that, gosh you, know for
the next couple of, weeks we still get to play.
Basketball we still get to we get to take the.
Floor and you know that's the part that excites. Me.
HATE i hate when the year ends and you got
to wait until the Following october to really get after

(01:43:55):
it again and really compete.

Speaker 7 (01:43:57):
Again we get the chance to do. That it's not
where we want to.

Speaker 9 (01:44:00):
Be i'll be the first to say that there's there's
nobody more disappointed that we're. Not we weren't on the
selection show last night THAN i am Or sunday.

Speaker 7 (01:44:09):
Night but we get a chance to go coach.

Speaker 9 (01:44:11):
Basketball we get a chance to play, basketball and we
get to do it against Other power five schools national.
Television that is an opportunity and one that we're going
to take advantage.

Speaker 3 (01:44:20):
Of Night terry Go Wes miller With Dan hord and
you Heard Terry nelson also in the. BACKGROUND a big
part of this is the prize, money, uh the NI,
l the nil, coin the prize money for the. Players
here's a discussion on.

Speaker 2 (01:44:34):
That it's been.

Speaker 14 (01:44:36):
Reported that the winning team gets three hundred thousand bucks
yea to split.

Speaker 7 (01:44:41):
Up is that the.

Speaker 9 (01:44:42):
Case i'm aware that there's There's it's kind of like
THE tbt in a, sense there's some financial. REWARD i
DON'T i don't know if our players know. That and
one of the Things i'm proud of is that we
have been off since the conference.

Speaker 7 (01:44:55):
Tournam we'll get get back going here.

Speaker 9 (01:44:57):
Soon but SO i haven't interacted with every everybody, yet
but the guys that have interacted with they're excited to.
PLAY i, mean they again they're disappointed that they're not
playing in THE ncaa, tournament but they're excited to go
play basketball. Again AND i don't think any of them
know that what you, SAID i don't think any of
them are, aware because it's not that hasn't been released.
Yet but so So i'm excited that they're not playing

(01:45:18):
for that dang. Reason but that's nice That fox willing
The fox is willing to do that to give some
financial reward for.

Speaker 3 (01:45:25):
Kids here's Uh dan talking To wes about whether or
not he knows what his roster is gonna look like
in The, crown which has prize money that the players
are completely and totally unaware.

Speaker 14 (01:45:37):
Of do you know at this point exactly what your
roster is going to look like In Las?

Speaker 7 (01:45:42):
Vegas you?

Speaker 9 (01:45:44):
KNOW I i believe that it'll look similar to the
way it looked In Kansas. CITY i haven't met with everybody.

Speaker 7 (01:45:51):
Yet we'll get.

Speaker 9 (01:45:51):
Again we're gonna get back after it in the next
couple of. Days we gave them a. Breather Uh But
i'd be shocked if if if the majority of ourster
is out there competing. Again the guys THAT i have
spoken to are committed and excited to, plane AND i
think that speaks to guys. Character you, know, again it's a.
Privilege it's a privilege to put the jersey on and go.

(01:46:11):
Compete i'd be shocked if guys didn't understand.

Speaker 14 (01:46:14):
That just to follow up on that, question the portal
is still going to be open for several weeks after
The Crown Basketball tournament is. Finished are you okay with
the idea of a guy playing for you in that
event and then potentially entering the.

Speaker 9 (01:46:28):
Portal you, Know i'm not gonna get pinned down here
to anything, tonight but, yeah, Dato but because the, portal
because the portal is still.

Speaker 7 (01:46:40):
Open after that event's.

Speaker 9 (01:46:42):
Over you, know you'd like to think that guys would
leave their the business during the season to what we're still,
doing and then business after the season, Afterwards but there
are extenuating. Circumstances, Again i'm not going to get pinned down,
here but we'll, see we'll see as we kind of
go through this process, again the GUYS i have spoken
to are excited to go go play and excited about

(01:47:04):
the opp even though they are disappointed about not playing
in The Nsblay.

Speaker 3 (01:47:08):
Tournament there you, Go Wes miller With dan And terry
last night on the appropriately Titled Wes Miller Radio show
from the Original montgomery And cincinnati And De paul in
The crown in just thirteen short.

Speaker 2 (01:47:20):
Days let's see, You.

Speaker 3 (01:47:25):
Mike go, Ahead you're ON espn fifteen. Thirty, mike how are.

Speaker 10 (01:47:28):
You i'm all having a little tough, time but always
enjoy listening to your show and talking with my Buddy,
Terence so thank. YOU i wanted to do three quickies
IF i. Could Little, bengals Little, reds little. Madness So

(01:47:53):
i'm looking at this offensive line still got me freaked,
out well BECAUSE i just don't Want. Joe and you're
the one who who put the moniker on this a
few years ago about the Cart and If i'm not,
mistaken it Wasn't Orlando round ranks thirties amongst weft tackles.

Speaker 3 (01:48:14):
Last year or so by Like Pro Football, Focus, yeah
somebody like.

Speaker 10 (01:48:19):
THAT i think it.

Speaker 2 (01:48:20):
WAS i don't know that he was.

Speaker 10 (01:48:22):
That, Low, OKAY i, MEAN i could be.

Speaker 2 (01:48:25):
WRONG i have NOT i will be honest with.

Speaker 3 (01:48:28):
YOU i have not seen tackle rankings for the twenty
twenty four, Season.

Speaker 10 (01:48:33):
Okay But i'm with. You the guard THING i just
Wish joe could feel so much, better and we all
would if we felt like.

Speaker 4 (01:48:42):
He was not going to.

Speaker 10 (01:48:43):
Take so many. Hits he's a tough, rascal but you,
know tough can't prevent the cart, sometimes.

Speaker 3 (01:48:50):
Right gotsack forty eight times took a lot of hits
and not only took a lot of, hits but was
on the run a. Lot and While joe is really
good and, elusive and he's great at, improvisation and he
can make great throws with his, legs and he can
make a play here there with his, legs the offense
works best When joe can drop back Or joe can
take the snap out of the. Shotgun let dudes get,

(01:49:10):
open read the, defense and make the right. Throw and
if he has a chance to do that on a
play to play, basis my money is going to be
On Joe burrow and The. BENGALS i think if you
were watching The bengals offensive line last, Year Orlando brown
is not an all pro left. Tackle and AGAIN i
don't have in front of me where he ranked in
terms of His Pro Football focus grade in relation to

(01:49:32):
the other players who played his. Position BUT i think
those of us who watched The bengals last. Year thought
he was.

Speaker 2 (01:49:38):
Fine he was good.

Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
Enough his overall grade this year was fifty eight point.
Two his pass blocking grade this year was sixty nine point.
Five he was fifty second out of one hundred and
forty one tackles who qualified in THE. Nfl his pass
blocking grade fifty second out of one forty. One and so,
yeah that's it's just outside the top third of THE.

(01:50:02):
Nfl he was not good as a run, blocker one
twenty second out of one forty.

Speaker 13 (01:50:06):
One.

Speaker 3 (01:50:07):
THERE i looked it up on the, Fly, Mike, yeah
you do. Great, okay, fine you know he. Was could
you get?

Speaker 2 (01:50:15):
Better? Yes could you do?

Speaker 3 (01:50:17):
Worse, undeniably where they were really deficient was at the guard.
POSITION i Thought Ted carriss last year had a really unenviable.
Job we're on a play to play. Basis he's looking
to his, left he's looking to his, right and he's
either got to help out the guy either to his
left or to his, right or he's not going to
get any help from the guy to his left or
to his.

Speaker 2 (01:50:36):
Right that has to be.

Speaker 3 (01:50:37):
Rectified and if it, IS i think you'll like what
you're getting From Amrius. Mims AND i think you'll be
okay with what you've gotten From Orlando.

Speaker 10 (01:50:46):
Brown well put And i'll just keep my fingers. Crushed
the best WAY i can sum up our two throw
teams in the in the city are The bengals no
defense in The, reds not much, offense kind of diametrically, opposed, Right. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:51:04):
Sure the biggest question for The reds this year is
can they?

Speaker 2 (01:51:08):
HIT i, mean you could.

Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
Go you can talk all you want About Terry francona
and accountability and they're gonna be better running the bases and.
Defense my guess is The reds have good starting.

Speaker 2 (01:51:18):
Pitching not. Great my guess is not elite starting.

Speaker 3 (01:51:22):
PITCHING i have a hard time guessing that because there
are still so many guys who haven't gotten through a
full big league. Season but there's a lot of. Upside
and The Brady singer ACQUISITION i think was a good,
one And Nick martinez is a good, pitcher And Hunter
green is a great, pitcher and they've got some other
guys WHO i think have a lot of. Upside where
there are way too many question marks is what they

(01:51:42):
are offensively. Like even the year That Ellie Dela cruz
had last, year if he puts up similar numbers this,
Year that's not, good. Right you need the expectation is
a superstar season From Ellie Dela. Cruz and then even
if they get, that who in the outfield you? Trust
Austin HAYES i think was a good, acquisition AND i

(01:52:03):
think against lefties is gonna put up good.

Speaker 2 (01:52:05):
Numbers but what else do you?

Speaker 7 (01:52:07):
Have?

Speaker 3 (01:52:08):
Uh Is matt McClain gonna stay healthy and play it
in A Major league baseball game that? Counts Since august
of twenty twenty? Three when Is Tyler stevenson gonna come?
Back Is Spencer steer gonna be? Healthy and is he gonna?

Speaker 13 (01:52:22):
Hit?

Speaker 11 (01:52:22):
More?

Speaker 3 (01:52:23):
Like there Is cees Who I'm i'm buying a lot
of stock. In Is cees gonna stay healthy and hit
the ball out of the ballpark at the rate that we?
Hope is Jam Or candelario already for a bounce back?
YEAR i think what is likely to happen is the
answers to some of these questions are gonna be.

Speaker 2 (01:52:39):
Answers we.

Speaker 3 (01:52:40):
Like WHAT i want to know is and what the
season will tell us is are the answers to all
of these questions gonna be?

Speaker 2 (01:52:46):
Answers we?

Speaker 4 (01:52:47):
Like and the.

Speaker 10 (01:52:49):
Beauty of it is is that we don't even If
candelaria is gonna play our, base and we, don't we
can just Write marte off and if he comes around
and does something, Great but you're that division is so
weak Because i'm looking at The reds if they're in
THE Nl, west they're fighting The rockies to get out
of last.

Speaker 3 (01:53:06):
Place, yeah forget about. It everybody's got question. Marks The
Chicago cubs had a good, offseason AND i think you,
Know vegas considers, them AND i think most of us
objectively would consider them to be the favorite in the.
Division they've got rotation, issues a bad catching. Situation i'm not.
IN i don't think The cubs look like the sort

(01:53:27):
of team, that even if they're as good as, expected
can run away and. Hide and then there's the rotation
injury issues In, milwaukee there's the non existent offense In,
pittsburgh and there's The cardinals basically not trying this. Offseason
the division is there for the.

Speaker 4 (01:53:41):
Taking it.

Speaker 10 (01:53:42):
Is i'm looking at This dodger staff and, they you,
KNOW i, mean are the. Team freeman's not even playing,
though And snell's not good. Yet Glass now's not good.
Yet So suzaki and The alamoto could be one and
twos for some, team and they're three and fours for
the for this that, Club so that club is very
lucky in what they've. Done let, me CAN i give

(01:54:04):
you some quick picks for the first round by five of?
Them go, now get out of your, hair. OKAY i
love With Patino junior AND i smell and upset over
the Tar HEELS i smell or The SPARTANS i. SMELL
i love The Colorado State rams to Beat. MARYLAND i
Like drake The bulldogs to Beat Texas. TECH i Got

(01:54:27):
oregon Clipping duke after that first game for both. TEAMS
i LIKE dcu to Beat. Wisconference AND i love The
commodores to Beat Saint mary's From california and The zags
that they get a shot At Houston watch.

Speaker 3 (01:54:43):
Out houston is the team THAT i struggle with most
as you look at the team seeded, one two and,
three BECAUSE i don't trust teams In march that aren't
good at getting to the free throw. Line houston is
not good at getting to the free throw, line and
then when they do get, there they're not a great
free throw shooting. Team to, me they check every. Box

(01:55:05):
BUT i don't love picking teams to win the whole
thing that aren't great at getting to the free throw.

Speaker 2 (01:55:11):
LINE i struggle with.

Speaker 3 (01:55:12):
THEM i struggle With duke BECAUSE i want to See
cooper flag play and you can't fill out a bracket
until you're gonna have to fill out your bracket before
you see him. PLAY i wonder About auburn because as
awesome as their offense, is they were wheezing toward the
finish Line Saint. John's they need the game officiated their
way six. Times i'm not sure they're going to get.
It LIKE i have talked myself out of a lot of,

(01:55:35):
teams WHO i will talk myself into that you mentioned
in the first round Is New mexico top twenty in
the country in most. Metrics, defensively they've got a kid
by the name Of Nellie joseph who can do pretty much.
Everything they play. FAST i think they play faster Than Marquette.
ONCE i do Like New. MEXICO i have not yet

(01:55:57):
chosen a team THAT i am gonna pick to win
the whole, thing but that's what tonight is.

Speaker 4 (01:56:01):
For.

Speaker 2 (01:56:01):
MIKE i appreciate you calling in as. Always thank you
