Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hi, Hello, Welcome in our number two of the Moegger
Radio Show. My name is Austin Elmore. I am not
Moeger with you until six o'clock thirty minutes from right now.
The Reverend Rick Browing chimes in his thoughts on Richard
(00:23):
Patino's introductory press conference yesterday at Xavier. I'll also ask him,
is anything going on with the Mighty Norse, my Mighty
Norse in the transfer portal. We'll talk about that. A
brief basketball conversation coming up. You'll hear from Richard Patino
as well as part of his conversation yesterday. But I
(00:47):
wanted to start this hour after an hour of getting
mad about the Cincinnati Reds and another loss, I wanted
to start this hour talking about the Bengals, where I'm
sure people will be mad about them as well. And
it turned out to be a pretty newsworthy couple of days.
The NFL Annual meeting happening at Palm Beach, Florida, and
(01:09):
Zach Taylor spoke with the media for a little while,
and then yesterday, almost as rare as a solar eclipse,
Katie Blackburn spoke with the media yesterday as well, covered
a lot of topics, including but not limited to, Trey
Hendrickson and the stadium deal. And she also kind of
set the table for Trey to respond, which Trey responded
(01:32):
earlier today on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN. You'll
hear some of that coming up during the five o'clock hour,
But I wanted to talk about it with a man
who covers the Bengals for multiple outlets, most notably the
LOCKEDWN Bengals podcast and Bengals Talk on YouTube and Sports Illustrated.
Tarn do we have James Rapeine? I see that the
(01:56):
line is in use, but I don't know if do
we have James repeae? All right, James Rapine now joins us. Uh,
you just called me a bad word and said you
were busy, but we agreed on this time.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Hi, James, Yeah, I called it at four five like
you said. Yeah, you just called me out like four
oh one. Okay, Well that's a Terran problem. Not to
throw him under the bus, but that's a Terran problem.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I don't know. I think it's you because you text
me and said wake up. See if we're really pulling
back the curtain.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Hair Well, Tarren called you, you didn't answer. I said,
wake up. You called me an expletive, and then Tarren
called you again.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
I mean I called you a dog.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
You did not. Anyways, Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals and
these negotiations now all of a sudden being public. What
was your first reaction, James, to what Katie Blackburn said
yesterday in regards to Hendrickson.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I didn't think it was a big deal, you know.
I maybe it's because I've seen what, you know, how
Katie speaks or whatever. Like. I just I took it
as thee Oh, they're negotiating and that's it, and that's
kind of what she threw out there. The difference is
is if you are negotiating, then there would be some communication,
(03:18):
and I think that that's where the disconnect happen and
why Trey was rubbed the wrong way by those comments.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
What then, was your reaction to what Hendrickson said today
talking about the lack of communication, talking about respect and
still wanting to be in Cincinnati. What did you make
of what Hendrickson said today?
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, I think this is it's battle time, Attie. I mean,
that's what it is, and this is about to be
a battle because Trey wants to get paid. And the
biggest revelation from today, I think is the fact that
he said, Hey, you guys told me last year that
you would take care of me, and it's not my
fault that that the market has changed. That's that's that's
(04:02):
what it is. That's the going rate. And I think
that that's probably where the disconnect here is and why
something hasn't ever felt imminent, like I not once to
have hip I've hiped Boughts like it was really from
the moment Jamar and c got done, it was like, oh,
now the Bengals have shifted their focus to Trey Hendrickson
(04:22):
and everyone's like, oh, it's gonna get done, and you
got these people on social media like it'll probably get
done this week. It was like that. It was never there.
It was never even remotely close to that, and so
I I think that's the disconnect. The Bengals were like, yeah,
we definitely want to pay you, and then the market
shifted and that's what happens, and Trey's like, yeah, all right,
(04:43):
well pay me market value and the Bengals are like, yeah,
we wanted to pay you, which we we want prepared
to pay you, and that's uh, That's probably why, at
least from my vantage point, there's a giant boy, a
giant just full gap in between where Trey is at
and where the bank. Maybe it's closer than I I
think that's just an opinion and a feeling, but I
(05:05):
think it's there's a huge gamp there.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Trey said today that for the last three years he's
been trying to get a long term deal done with
the Bengals. If that's the case, why did he agree
to a short term extension before that?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I well, he definitely asks for more years than in
twenty twenty two or twenty twenty three. Excuse me. When
he agreed to that one year deal, and I think
they offered him that one year deal and he was like, hey,
that's I think it was like a twenty one million
dollar extension. He's like, well, that's that's good money for them.
(05:40):
That the problem is is now and what it did
to him because he keeps him off the market and
prevents him to some degree from getting market value from someone,
and now he doesn't control that. And so yeah, I
think on one hand, it put more money in his
pocket up front, and now it's kind of biting him
(06:02):
a little bit and that's the challenge. I mean that
one year really does make it challenging for the Bengals
to get Tray what he's looking for, I think, and
at the same time make it tough on the Bengals
because they have him at such a steal right now,
and even though, yeah, they do want to give him
a raise, there's a delicate balance and obviously they have
(06:25):
more leverage since he is under contract.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I read on your website Bengals Talk SI that the
Bengals were never offered a first round pick for Trey Hendrickson.
If they aren't offered a first round pick for Trey,
why should he be paid like a top five edge
rusher in the NFL If he's not worth a first
round pick.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Well, I think it's the Bengals paid him. They would
get a first round pick. But when you're paying a
guy and you have to like people say, Miles Garrett
was getting two ones, and that was never the case.
He was going to get a first and then something
else for the Browns. He was never getting the Browns
two first round picks. That was never a conversation. And
(07:08):
the first rounder, I think was the Bengals mindset when
they gave him the permission to seek.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
A trade, was like, all right, well, we're going to
do this and this is what we're looking for.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
And I'm sure trades.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Campbell's like, all right, well, let's let's see if we
can get you that.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
And I that the map now could it if it.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Does, could that change? And in the trade happened. Maybe?
Speaker 3 (07:33):
But to your point, it's it's tough to if you're
the Bengals to ask a team, or it's tough for
a team, any team to say, all right, we are
going to pay trade and also give up a premium pick,
and by a premium, I mean a first round pick
that includes a fifth year option. And because if that's
(07:54):
the hit, you're talking about a cost control player for
five years. And so yeah, it's a I get delicate
balance there. I get what you're saying. I think if
he was.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Under contract, he would set a first round pick.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Not under contract needs a new deal. I'm sure they
got offered a second, but I'm not sure it's much
more than that.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
They are now negotiating through the media. Katie, whether she
meant to do that or not is and Trey very
obviously meant to do that. Now for the second time
on the Pat McAfee show. Who does it benefit to
negotiate in the media.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Well, I'm not sure that full disclosure, I'm not sure
it really benefits anyone. I think Trey doesn't have a
ton of leverage here, obviously wants to get paid the Bengals.
I don't think an unhappy Tray going into training camp,
(08:54):
going into preseason, going into the season, because that can
make a difference if you're playing him being on your team,
and so I think that there are a couple of
things to watch here, and so trade's going to happen.
It's going to happen probably in the next twenty two days.
You want to do it before the NFL Draft starts,
so you have an idea. Even if you're not getting
a first round pick, you know you have two seconds
(09:16):
that could change your approach. So if the Bengals did
have second thoughts and want to trade Tray, the next
three weeks of the time to do it, I don't
think that's going to happen, and so can they will
they be proactive even though they had the leverage to
try to smooth this out, make Trey happy, but also
(09:39):
do it in the way that they're comfortable with. I
think that's a really big question now, and not something
we might not I mean, we might not get the
answer to this for multiple months.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Which of the following is the most likely outcome? Trey
Hendrickson plays on a new deal in Cincinnati, Trey plays
on his current d in Cincinnati, Trey plays looks like
we just lost James repeat, I'll finish the question. Which
of the following is most likely?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Trey plays on a new deal in Cincinnati? James? Are
you back?
Speaker 3 (10:19):
I I'm back, all right?
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Which of the following is the most likely scenario? Which
of the following is most likely? Trey plays on his
current deal in Cincinnati, Trey plays on a new deal
in Cincinnati, Trey plays for another team this season, or
Trey does not play football in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
I still think new deal. I still I think. I
don't think he's playing on his deal. I don't think
that the Bengals. I just don't think anyone is going
to be comfortable with that because it's going to really
going to make it tough for everybody. And so I
(11:02):
think they can find a common ground for a new deal.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Now, is it gonna be everything trade's hoping for.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
I don't know. I think that's that's the tough part.
Is what's going to going to have to probably happen
is Trey makes a couple of concessions because he wants
guaranteed money, he wants a long term contract, and he
doesn't want all the you know, the incentives. He made
all that clear, and that's fine, incentives that he can't control.
(11:28):
Get it, totally, get it. But if you want those things,
then you're probably going to have to take a little
bit of a lower salary or you're probably gonna have
to do something because you don't have a bunch of
leverage here. They didn't have to give him permission to
seek a trade. They didn't have to. They don't have
to set into an extension technically. Right at the same time,
(11:49):
if I'm the Bengals, I would want Trey around. I
also get not wanting to pay him thirty seven million
dollars per year. So maybe it's a three year con
track and they rip up his current one year and
they give him a three year contract worth thirty three
million dollars per year and it's three for ninety nine,
(12:09):
where the good majority of that second year is guaranteed,
and he gets guaranteed money but doesn't necessarily hit.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Top of market.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
But there's enough long term money and cash flow there
to get it done. Like I think that there is
a happy medium somewhere. The thing that would concern me
is that the same thing that was discussed during Super
Bowl Week is still being discussed, and it's the lack
of communication. It keeps coming up, and that's.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
That is not that's not a surprise though, that's the
Bengals have sucked at that forever. You got to know that, right.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Sure, But that's that has to at some point they
have to realize, like, that's why today happened. It's all
because of communication. It's because of the key quote.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
That to me is what makes me wonder if it
is a good thing that the players are like, you
know what, we're going to start negotiating in the media
to try to expose the Bengals to get them to change. Like,
I wonder if that's a strategy that's talked about among
agents and players in the locker room.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Maybe maybe, I mean maybe, And obviously I worked with
Joe and like that's the next point. I'm honestly it's
like just Joe first day of OTAs or first time
he talks this offseason. So yeah, I don't know why
how we haven't had the fact leader paid yet, but
we need we need to figure that out. Trey needs
to be here. Like but that's what's Billy about it is.
(13:42):
I think if you're in that locker room, good luck
painting the picture of a super Bowl caliber winning defense
without Trey Hendrickson. And you made really no significant needle
moving additions. I get it, you added a t. J. Slayton,
a really quality nose tackle, but let's be real here,
they didn't make any super gigantic, triinormous moves on defense.
(14:04):
And so now you're gonna take Trey Henderson away too,
like it' that's a really tough sell for the guys
that are going out there every Sunday, Monday or Thursday.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
James Rapine Locked on Bengals and Bengals Talk s I
and say Bengals Talk on YouTube. James, thanks for making
some time for us today. Have a great, great Wednesday night.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Sorry I accidentally hung up on you.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
That's all right, it wouldn't be the first time. The
honest that is James Rapine from Locked on Bengals. I
have a lot of thoughts on Trey Henderson that I'm
gonna get to at the start of the five o'clock hour.
But when we come back, I want you to hear
what Richard Patino said during his introductory press conference at
(14:47):
Xavier yesterday. Some really good stuff in there, and then
we will get to the Reverend Richard Browing, Rick Browing,
as you know him. I'm gonna ask Rick if I
can call him Richard since Richard Pati doesn't go by Rick.
I'm just gonna, you know, I'm gonna try to have
a little bit of fun with this. I've also trying
to figure out if we can call him Dick Patino
(15:08):
because it rhymes with Rick Patino. These are the important
questions that we're trying to figure out as college basketball
the real offseason gets underway with Richard Patino trying to
figure out what players are going to play for the
Muskies next year. So we'll hear from Patino next, then
we'll go to Rick Broaring, and then in the five
o'clock hour, all Bengals, including five minutes of what Trey
(15:31):
Hendrickson had to say today on The Pat McAfee Show.
It's all coming up next. This is The Moegger Show
on ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Austin Elmore on the Home
of the Bengals ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
