Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hi, Hello, and welcome in. It's the Moegar Radio Show.
I'm not Moegar. My name is Austin Elmore. With you
until six o'clock today, No mo, mo, Just watch that
atrocity at Great American Ballpark.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Second day in a row.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
The Reds get shut out, they can't find a way
to score runs. They outscored the Texas Rangers in this
three game set, fourteen to five. They lost the last
two games after a fourteen to three victory on Monday
night where Ellie de la Cruz hit a couple of
homers and Matt McClain went deep again and everybody's like,
(00:42):
all right, relax, now we're back. Everything's gonna be okay.
And then, in typical Reds fashion, they follow that up
with two anemic offensive performances that have you once again
questioning what is the direction of this team this season
and quite frankly, what is their ceiling? And the question
(01:03):
I keep coming back to is what's going through Terry
Francona's mind right now? Like this guy has repeatedly said
that the Reds just blew him away and that had
just felt right and that he didn't need to come
out of retirement. And but he did because it felt
right and that these were the right people and their
(01:25):
plan and everything was right. He's got to be looking
around for Nick Crawl saying, uh, Nick, do you got
any good players anywhere? Yes, Austin Hayes is hurt, but
keep in mind they that was their big offense. Their
their big offensive acquisition for the offseason was a guy
who almost died due to a kidney issue last year,
(01:47):
and they got him for five million bucks off the
scrap heap.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Sure, he was impressive during spring. He's been useless through
six and he won't be with them for this road trip.
Tyler Stevenson, I know, is not there, and that is
a big loss offensively. But I was told that Jose
Travigno was gonna be this big impact as a backup catcher.
He's so much better than Luke Mayley, right, and then
(02:13):
Jake Fraley. It was just a tough year for him
off the field last year. He'll bill returned it before
me hit two seventy nine last His power will come back, okay.
Jacob Hurdabies is taking meaningful at Batch for the last
two games, all right, Gavin Lucks okay, Fine, Matt McClain
(02:35):
looked terrible today. Jammercandelaro, I don't know if he's made
contact in the last two days, looks absolutely useless. Christian
nin Canossi and Strand had to miss a game last
night because of his wrist injury. Did nothing today. Spencer
Steer looks like a shell of himself, injured, hurt or not.
What we already know about this team is that the
(02:55):
roster's not good enough for them to really compete, is it?
At least from an offensive standpoint? Starting pitching, though, I mean,
you can't ask for much more from the red starters.
They've now gone one full time through the rotation. This
was Hunter Green's second start of the season, and he
was masterful again today. Seven innings, one run, a walk,
(03:22):
eight strikeouts. Again today he was just He was everything
you needed, a night removed from Carson Spiers going six innings,
giving up one earned run, walking to and striking out five.
What about Brady Singer the other night? Fantastic seven innings,
no runs, two walks, eight strikeouts. Red starters combined in
the series against the Rangers twenty innings, two runs, five walks,
(03:47):
twenty one strikeouts, two losses. Back to back series losses
for the Reds to start the season. Phone lines are
open five to one, three seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
We're gonna treat this first hour of the show like
the unofficial Reds postgame show. Now I do that show.
It's called Extra Innings down the Hall on the weekends
(04:09):
on Sundays, and we have some really good conversations after
the game. And I'm inviting you to be a part
of those conversations today at five three seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. You can tweet it me as well at
Audie Elmore au t y E LM r E. If
you're just getting here. Austin Elmore in for Moegar this afternoon.
(04:32):
There are other things to talk about. In the second
hour of the show, we'll split time between football and basketball.
James Rapine is going to join us at four h five.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Trey Henderson made some waves today with his appearance on
the Pat McAfee show. This coming just a few hours
after Katie Blackburn, the executive vice president of Bengals, made
some waves with her comments about not only the stadium issue,
but also negotiating with Trey Hendrickson. Will break all that
down with James. I'll share my thoughts on that at
the beginning of the five o'clock hour as well. At
(05:03):
four thirty five, Rick Broing, the Reverend Rick Brooring from
Musketeer Report dot com and also the color analyst for
NKU basketball. He's gonna stop by. Richard Patino was introduced
yesterday as the new head coach of the Xavier Musketeers.
We'll talk to Rick about his reaction to that, his
(05:23):
takeaways from that. You'll hear a little bit from Patino
in the show as well. Like I said, at the
top of the third hour, we'll transition back to some
football and some Trey Hendrickson and then at five thirty five,
I'm not happy right now with the Reds.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I'm angry.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
One of the most positive people I know, first team,
all good guy, always glass half full.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Jeff Carr.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
You know him well, if you listen to this show,
you know who Jeff is, and you know that Jeff
is uh, he's always spinning it glass half full, positive guy.
That's what you know about Jeff. Well, I'd like to
know what he thinks is positive about a Red's two
two and four start to the twenty twenty five season.
So where do they go from here? Well, they're gonna
(06:08):
get on the bird today and fly up to Milwaukee, which,
as you know, has been a house of horrors for
the old Red Legs for the last several years.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
The Brewers are down a little bit this year, if
we're being honest, They have six starting pitchers on the
injured list already. This is the same Brewer team that
gave up like a billion homers to the Yankees in
the first three games of the series. They lost eleven
to one a couple of days ago to the Kansas
City Royals and gave up three hits to Jonathan India.
Right now, the Brewers and Royals are tied one to
(06:37):
one to the bottom of the eighth in the final
game of that series. Milwaukee did come back and win
last night, But overall, that is a team Milwaukee currently
at one in four to start the season. We'll find
out what happens with their result today. That is a
team that the Reds on paper are better than.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
You know as well as I do that they don't
play the games on paper, But wouldn't it be nice
to use this Milwaukee series as a turning point? Maybe
they just need to get out of town. Maybe they
need to go play cards on the road somewhere with Francona.
I don't know what it is, but the bats have
(07:19):
to wake up and maybe going up against an inferior
pitching staff like the Brewers have, maybe, just maybe that
will be what is needed to turn the offense back on.
We know that it's probably gonna be at least another
week or so until we hear from Tyler Stevenson. He
(07:40):
doesn't have another MRI until April seventh. The Reds have
already said Austin Hayes will not be available on this
road trip and expects to be returning when they come
back to Cincinnati in a couple of days. So I
don't know what to say right now, other than this
(08:01):
has been a really, really disappointing start to the Red season.
They are now zero to two in one run games.
That was one of those buzzword stats that was talked
about a lot last year. I believe they were fifteen
and twenty eight in those games last year. And you
know the other thing that's bothering me is once again
(08:23):
base running errors. We like to call him on Sincy
three sixty twot blands, which is thrown out on the
baseline like a nincompoop. Credit to Chris Welsh for that
from a couple of years ago. Had one on opening
Day when Gavin Lux got gunned down by twenty five
feet trying to go to third, had one the other
(08:44):
day with Jacob Hernaby's not knowing how many outs there were,
and had one again today with Jake Fraley getting picked
off second after he let off the ninth with a
single or let off the eighth inning with a single.
The part that's mad is that I was told that
Terry Francona was going to be the guy who fixes
(09:05):
all this stuff. If you listen to me and Tony
If if you ever hear any of the shows that
I host, I am the guy who typically defends the manager.
I typically defend the coach. I am known for being
a Zach Taylor apologist, if you will. Last year I
repeatedly stood up for David Bell, and when I found
(09:30):
out that the Reds were firing David Bell and hiring
Terry Francona, I was on board.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
How could you not be. He's a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
He's the second most winningest manager active in Major League Baseball,
behind Bruce Bochie, how could you not be excited that
Francona is coming. But as the months rolled by, in
the days and the weeks rolled by following the hiring
of Terry Francona, there was little action to suggest that
the Reds were really willing to get better. They didn't
(09:58):
do enough. The outfield was still a problem. They were
banking on Francona to be the guy who fixes everything.
And we had a poll question a couple of weeks
ago on since three p. Sixty where we asked, are
we putting too many eggs in the basket of Terry
Francona being the guy that's gonna fix everything? Now, I
(10:19):
will say this, I put base running errors and fielding
issues in baseball IQ. I put that at the feet
of the manager. I put that on Terry Francona because
it's his job day to day and his coaching staff
job day to day to have the team ready to play.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
And if you don't know how many outs.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
There are and you don't know where to throw the
ball when it comes to you, and you're making stupid
decisions on the base paths, that to me falls on
the manager and his staff. The guys that are working
with those players on a day to day basis. Okay,
I think I think that's I don't think that's outrageous
thought to have.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
I think that's fair. And then.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
I look at and blame Nick Krawl and Brad Meta,
Nick Krawl, the President of Baseball Operations, Brad Meta, the GM,
and say, yeah, these guys aren't performing very well, and
yeah they haven't been great, and that's on fran Kona
to figure out their baseball IQ But also, do you
keep bringing in players with low baseball IQs? Do you
(11:30):
keep bringing in bad players? If you're Nick Krawl, how
do you sleep at night knowing that you completely completely
failed in your job to have an outfield suitable for
Major League play by opening day. Nick Krawl is a
very powerful person, and I don't think he's a stupid man,
(11:54):
but I, for the life of me, cannot understand the
process that went into building this roster, specifically the outfield.
Even if it was just Austin Hayes, or even if
Hayes was out there and playing well, I would have questions.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
And I'm stuck in this in.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Between of like really getting mad about this season, but
also kind of trying to I know getting mad through
six games might seem extreme, but I don't. I've said
this before. There is a very small margin of error
for this team, very small, especially in the National League,
and they have to win the National League Central, I think.
(12:36):
And when a team is just flat out unprepared and
quite frankly not good enough and injured, it's maddening to me.
So I'm trying to enjoy having the chance to watch
Elie de la Cruz play and Hunter Green pitch and
Matt mcclean's return, and I'm trying not to do to
get too caught up in the results, because if we
(12:59):
were being realistic, we probably knew that the results weren't
going to be great. And outside of McLain and dal
la Cruz, there's really not much there. Offensively. It was
just kind of a you know what, let's hope Terry
Francona fixes everything. David Bell is looking pretty good right now.
(13:20):
I'm not saying comparing him to Terry Francona, but some
of the stuff that Dave was constantly berated about with
the lineup and the players and whatnot, well maybe it
wasn't all him. And if I'm Terry Francona, who multiple
times has said I didn't need to come out of
retirement for this. I'm looking for Nick Cral saying, hey man,
(13:44):
you got anybody else because this isn't good enough and
I don't know how far I can take these guys.
Your phone calls five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty.
That's the phone number. You can also tweet it me
at Audielmore au T y E L M O R E.
Later on in this hour, we'll hear from the skipper
of the Reds, Terry Francona, and today's starter, Hunter Green,
(14:05):
who was marvelous again. We'll go through some of the
numbers and get your phone calls, including Chris and Colton.
Next on ESPN fifteen thirty, Welcome back, ESPN fifteen thirty.
This is the Moeger Radio Show. I'm not Moegar, I'm
Austin Elmore with you until six o'clock today talking Reds
(14:27):
back to back days one nothing losses for the old
ball club down by the River, getting set to go
to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers for a four
game set over the weekend. Numbers from today Hunter Green,
as I said earlier, seven innings three hits, one run.
It was earned. He walked one and struck out eight
his era on the season. Two twenty five another good
(14:49):
outing from Tony Santian and Emilio Pagan. Each of them
pitched a scoreless inning as well. Reds had just three
hits on the day, as did the Rangers. Rangers did
have one error. The hits for the Reds came off
the bat of t J. Friedel, Ellie de la Cruz
and Jake Frayley. De la Cruz doubled. It was his
second of the year, and as a team, the Reds
(15:12):
were zero for four with runners in scoring position and
left three on base all together. Da la Cruz did
steal his second base of the season, and did that
a third base off of Jack Lighter and Jonahi. Matt
McCain stole his first base of the season as well.
Jake Frayley, as you know, caught stealing in the eighth inning.
(15:39):
In the ninth inning or whatever it was. It's all
bleeding together now. Josh Smith had the RBI double off
of Hunter Green. As you know, on this show, they
don't reference pitcher win loss records, so this is a
perfect example of Hunter Green getting hung with a loss
when he pitched spectacular for the Red Legs. Today, let's
(15:59):
go to the phone's phone lines open five, one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. You can also tweet at me, speaking of which,
I got a tweet. This guy wants to know. Do
the Reds get back to five hundred at any point
the rest of the season.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (16:13):
That tweet in from Damien. That's a scary thought, isn't
it that It is April. Let me check second, and
we're talking about do they get back to five hundred
at any point? Lord help us. I hope they get
back to five hundred this weekend. Let's go to Cincinnati.
Chris is there?
Speaker 2 (16:28):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Chris?
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Hey, buddy, you hit it on the head. I mean,
our front office, our genius is sat there and said,
you know what, we hired a manager. Everything is fixed.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
And there to be somebody that said, hey, maybe we
need a bat somewhere along the line. Oh no, we
got a manager. I mean, it's amazing to watch this.
I mean, you got some pitching surplus. I mean, go
out and look at Baltimore. I don't know how much
everybody Baltimore's pitching sass in trouble. Rhtt Louard, who's honestly
(17:01):
a third starter? And go get Kobe Mayo, who you
get for five years in this ballpark, You now got
a guy that can hit the damn ball out of
the ballpark here. I mean, they got a lot of
hitting and they have no pitching. We have pitching and
no hitting. But I just don't even know if I
trust the Reds front office to even know who in
the hell the guy even is.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
At this point.
Speaker 5 (17:23):
I mean, honestly, it's the Bengals had two offensive linemen
on the left side had never blocked, wouldn't everybody'd be like, hey,
maybe we trade one of our five, you know, running
backs or something and try.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
To get somebody. But it's amazing.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
There's holes that are so obvious.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Yeah, and you have some This is this is a
you're right, You're exactly right. You have pieces that are
seen as assets in the farm system. And Chris, thank
you for the phone call. This is a good good point,
actually is you know, I know MO has talked about
this before, but there is pressure on this organization to
(18:05):
win in the Ellie de la Cruze era, and there
should be pressure on them to win in the Ellie
de la cruz Era, because you know at Lee's not
going to be here in a few years.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
And I don't want to keep pounding that drum over
and over and over again.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
But you just pulled out Terry Francona out of retirement,
and you've got a generational superstar, and you've got his
partner in crime and Matt McClain, and you've got a
cy young candidate in Hunter Green. This is the perfect
concoction for what you want to build a nucleus and
(18:45):
build this team into a winner. And I constantly say
on ESPN fifteen thirty down on sinty three to sixty
that hope is not a strategy. Hope cannot be a
strategy when you're roster building. It can't be that way
for football. It can't be that way for Richard Patino
building a roster at Xavier, and it sure as hell
can't be that way for baseball players. But the Reds
(19:08):
this is a perfect example right now of them saying, oh, man,
I hope we're healthy in twenty twenty five, and I
hope Austin Hayes returns to form in twenty twenty five,
and I hope Jake Frayley's power comes back, and I
hope Terry Francona can fix all this stuff. See what
happens when you put hope as a strategy. You've lost
(19:30):
four of the first six and you keep doing the
same dumb stuff that you were doing a year ago,
and you have not put forth a good enough effort
to make the team better. And it's foolish, by the way,
to look at where they're at now and say, oh,
when Stevenson comes back, they'll be fine, or when Hayes
(19:51):
comes back, they'll be fine. You know what that is.
That is again using hope as a strategy. There's no
guarantee that that's going to happen. There's no guarantee that
they're going to return to that form. And on top
of that, add on top of that to the idea
that Ellie de la Cruz is gone in a few years.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
This is your window. You have to act like it.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
And understandably so, there is very little trust in the
front office to make the moves that are necessary to
build a winner. You know, Terry Francona had a bunch
of good players on those teams that he went to
the World Series with and won the World Series with
Hall of Fame type of guys Pedro and Big Poppy
(20:40):
and Manny Ramirez and Pedroia as a former MVP, like, yeah,
it's more than just Ellie and McClain and Hunter, like
they have to and and for the life of me,
I can't understand why, on top of the fact that
(21:01):
the Reds should be pursuing these guys, why power hitting
our outfielders aren't signing up to come to Cincinnati and
play in this ballpark. It makes no sense. And on
top of that, the way the roster really has been
constructed makes no sense. Because you've got a team that's
built for hitting the ball in the gap, in speed
and stealing bases, and you do so in the smallest
(21:23):
ballpark in America outside of Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
You don't have dudes that can hit a bunch of homers.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Ellie and McLain can, sure, but if you're banking on that,
it might be a long season. And listen, this is
not something we all we just found out of the
last six games. We knew there would be problems offensively,
but did we think it would be this bad?
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I don't know. Let's go to Colton, he's been holding on.
What's up?
Speaker 8 (21:52):
Colton?
Speaker 9 (21:53):
Hey hear me?
Speaker 10 (21:54):
I can hear you, brother, all Right's calm myself down.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
Since I pulled up to.
Speaker 11 (22:00):
To my home here in Ellesmere. But really, all I
wanted to drive home is the fact that I'm turning
thirty this year.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Meantime me just scary, isn't it?
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Coleton?
Speaker 11 (22:10):
It's scary as a word. I want to almost say,
it's a waste of time. I've sat here for years.
Hope is not a strategy is my favorite saying. And
I'm glad that you're driving done home because if you
look at our outfield, you look basically everywhere across the diamond.
I'll include Cees and this, I'll include Candy at third,
I'll include our catch. You are not a set team
(22:31):
outside of your middle wind field, right, and your pitching
has been phenomenal. I'll give them that you were not
set anywhere but short and second base. And every single
year I drive myself down to Fountain Square in March
and I get excited for a year and I think
it's going to be different, and every year they prove
me different, and I look like an idiot, and I'm
tired of believing it, and it just goes back to
(22:53):
phild comments, where am I going to go?
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Nowhere? Phil?
Speaker 11 (22:56):
This is all I have, This is all I have,
and you sit there and in my face and I'm sorry,
I'm tired of it, and I'm set up, and I
just feels like a waste of time.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
I'm sorry, Colton, thank you for the phone call. You're
not alone, man, A lot of people feel that frustration.
I believe that the Reds want to win. I don't
believe that they want to win bad enough. I don't
believe that they're willing to turn over every stone to win.
I don't believe that they're willing to be aggressive in
(23:25):
the pursuit of a championship. And so I, too, like Colton,
have felt at times like it's a waste of time
because if they're not willing to do everything possible, everything necessary,
what's the point.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
I cannot figure out. And again I want to reiterate this.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
I don't think Nick Crale is a stupid person, but
I cannot figure out how he sits in his office
and looks at this roster and says, yeah, that's good enough.
That to me would be someone who's detached from reality.
And also I would think that Nick has an understanding
(24:11):
of the rest of the National League and the rest
of this division enough to say we're not good enough
to compete.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
Let's go do something. And I don't give a damn.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
About where the prospects are ranked or who says what
about the farm system prospects be damned, I don't care.
Can you put a winning team on a Major league diamond?
Isn't that your job? More phone calls next ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 12 (24:42):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic from.
Speaker 13 (24:48):
Do you See Health traffic center to what injuries slaw
you down? You see Health Orthopedics and sports medicine experts
can help keep you moving. Schedule the same day appointment
at you Seehealth. Dot com got a breakdown reporting on
the entrance tramp seventy five northbound, the on ramp to
Richwood Road. Also heavier pockets of traffic on seventy five
north bound seventy fourth to Ronald Reagan Highway and on
(25:10):
seventy five southbound from Davis to right around Paddock and
also Western Avenue to the Brent Spence Bridge. Why Rick
shremp with traffic.
Speaker 10 (25:19):
This reporting spot.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Welcome back to ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Austin
Elmore in promo eger today. Twenty minutes from now will
switch to a little Bengals conversation. James Rapene is going
to join us, but right now we're sifting through the
aftermath of another Reds loss. No runs scored for the
second straight day, and this coming after a fourteen run
(25:44):
outburst on Monday night. Our buddy dinner on the Hall,
Lance McAllister tweeted this out earlier today. Five times last season.
Actually he posted this last night after the loss. Five
times last season, the Red score at least seven runs
and we're shut out.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
The next day.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
They were shut out following offensive outburst last season of seven, eleven, nine, eleven,
and seven, and now here they are after a fourteen
runout burst on Monday night, shut out in back to
back games. Let's go to Eddie in Green Township. What's
up Eddie?
Speaker 7 (26:26):
Hey, Austin, how's it going?
Speaker 14 (26:27):
Man?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Good man?
Speaker 15 (26:30):
Thanks?
Speaker 7 (26:30):
I saw you at the Red game Monday night. I
was the one asked to take your picture with you.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Yeah, ed he it was good to meet you.
Speaker 7 (26:35):
Man, you too, I just recognize your face so seeing
you on Facebook with your pictures of Umo and Tony
and them, Oh there's Austin. Yeah, but yeah, I enjoyed
listening to your show on the weekdays of Tony and
then filling in promoter down and we're mos out today.
But we all share the same frustration.
Speaker 9 (26:53):
You know, all of us.
Speaker 7 (26:54):
You me, Moe, you know the guy just called in Calton.
I mean, I've been a Red Stan since I was thirteen.
Like I said, I'm thirteen, I'm forty years old now.
So I've been in Frances ninety eight and twenty twenty five,
and I've never seen a Redis playoff series win. And
like you said, it feels like it feels like the
offense all over again from last year, like the team
that lost a lot of games by one run or
lost a lot of one nothing games. And we knew
(27:17):
this offense was gonna be bad this year. In the offseason,
we kept screaming for hey, you guys can address the outfield.
The outfield needs to be upgraded. The offense needs to
be upgraated, he'd wan or two backs. They went on
and got Austin Hayes. That's not the fat we needed.
And like you said, the word hope. I think that's
the secret war of the day. I hope. They are
banking on so many things this year, but banking on
(27:39):
Christian and Fronis and Strand to come back, you know,
from injuries and be good. They're expecting Jake Freeley to
come back and have his power back, and Spencer stear
guy loving the guy just should be playing. Still, he's
playing like probably eighty percent of the shoulder. I mean,
the pitching is great. The starting pitching we knew was
going to be their strength this year. The bullpen has
been pretty good so far for the most part, minus
(28:00):
opening Day. But they're wasting all this great young talent.
Like you said, this is the time to need city
to compete. I thought that Terry Frink couldna hiring was
gonna be the beginning of them. Like going all in.
That was just that was like their first moves, like Okay,
we got the manager. Now we're gonna go and get right,
you know, get everything together. Like twenty twelve twelve, they
went all in, went out and got their big bat,
(28:21):
Ryan Ludwick. Twenty nineteen. I think it was the off
season they went out and got Nick Cassiano's Mike Mustokas
and all them, I mean they we they have to
do it now. They should have done it now. This
is their two to three year window with Terry Frink,
Ellida La Cruz, Matt McClean, Hunter Green. You know these guys.
You have to go all in right now. The division
thinks right now. Often this division is open for anyone
(28:41):
to take.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
And that's the sort. That's the thing, Eddie, And thank
you for the phone call. I gotta go here.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
But that's the thing, Like it's winnable, it's there, you
can do it. And the good news is there's only
six games that have been played, and there's a bunch
left to be played. And I would to know at
what point do you look at it and say, all right,
we're gonna have to make a move. We have to
(29:08):
do something here. This isn't right, Like, at what point
does that happen? It can't be after the first thirty
or thirty two games and you get into the month
of May. It can't be, you know, hoping that Austin
Hayes comes back and changes everything two weeks from now.
We've seen this team repeatedly dig a hole too deep
(29:31):
for it to climb. Out of early on in the season.
Are we about to experience that again? It feels like
it's teetering because the organization has failed in its ability
to acquire good enough players to actually compete. When all
the pieces are there, you just have to surround them
(29:53):
with the right stuff. They haven't found a way to
do that. And I don't want to sit here and
wait it out. I don't want to wait for Tyler Stevenson,
who we don't really know when he's going to come back,
and with an injury like that, who knows how long
it's going to be and what Spencer's deer going to be.
Is there any indication on what that shoulder actually is
(30:14):
and what the injury is and how it can be fixed.
Just those two in and of themselves, the doubt is
worth going and getting somebody, at least from an offensive standpoint.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Let's go to Tom. Tom, what's up, a good man?
What's on your mind?
Speaker 8 (30:33):
As I told I believe your screen is Karen.
Speaker 7 (30:35):
Is that correct?
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (30:39):
We go to spring training every year and this year
we were down over almost three weeks, and I listen
to you guys almost every day, and I was going
to call you during spring training in l No, let's
just wait. See, like you said, Frank Conna is in charge.
Now see how this works. But this is exactly what
they look like in spring training three weeks. I mean,
(31:02):
like a duplicate, the dumb mistakes, the blundered base running,
and let me help you with something else. Tyler Stevenson
looked as bad as anybody else in spring training. So
don't put your hopium bag on him either, because he's
not gonna come do much. I don't know where they go,
but this is a carbon copy of what I saw.
(31:27):
I did call you guys last year, I believe from
there in spring training, but this is exactly what they
looked like last year. And this is just this is just.
Speaker 16 (31:35):
Like groundhol day. Yeah, yeah, we're repeating and like you said,
like getting thrown out that was I can't remember who
it was got thrown out going to second in spring
training from me to you, yeah, and it's like, why
(31:56):
why are you running on that? I just I don't
get it. But the one good news is the whole
time we were down there, Ellie looked like he was
in mid season form. But one guy can't beat everybody.
Speaker 8 (32:09):
I don't know what they're gonna do it's and I'm
The sad part is everybody saying, go get a bout there,
go get a back. Well, that's not gonna fix this team.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Yeah I know, and Tom, thank you for the phone call.
And that's where we're kind of at, where it's like, man,
here we go again, another season where we let ourselves believe.
After that big outburst the other night, and after the
way Matt McClain and Ellie started the season and went
through spring training, all Right, we're back, Everything's gonna be okay,
(32:41):
and here we go. Am I crazy for being pissed
off after six games?
Speaker 2 (32:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Am I like I'm stuck between trying to hold accountable
an organization and have a standard and what I believe
a fan should always do, and also just try to
enjoy watching Ellie Da La Cruz and try not to
get hung up on it and try not to let
(33:09):
baseball determine my mood for the next six months. That's
the thing that sucks about baseball. Even when your team
is really good, you go to bed pissed seventy nights
in a summer. It drives you crazy. Ugh, it's gonna
be a long one. Sixty two. We'll take a break.
We'll come back. More phone calls next ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 12 (33:28):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 10 (34:05):
This report is sponsored by Rapid.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
You know, it's that time of the year where we
have a bunch of fun stats about the Reds and
their start. And if you listen to this show, if
you listen to our market or in this station, whenever
you've heard the voice of Jay Morrison, the great beat
reporter for the Cincinnati Bengals for Sports Illustrated. Jay has
(34:29):
great stats and he just dropped one on his feed
about the Reds. Listen to this. Today is the fifth
time in Red's history that they have lost one nothing
games on back to back days. It's just the second time.
Both of those one nothing losses were at home the
last time and the only other time was in nineteen
(34:52):
oh seven against the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
That's incredible. Let's go to Chuck. What's up, Chuck?
Speaker 17 (35:00):
And I'm not saying the groundbreaking here, but I mean,
this is what both are organ you know, both our
major league sports organizations. You know, winning championships just isn't
their first priority. It is a perfect example. I don't
even blame Nick Krawl. I mean, I can't prove this,
but I'm willing to bet. I mean, how many times
did you hear them link to Luis Robert during the
off season?
Speaker 4 (35:21):
And I'm willing to bet.
Speaker 17 (35:22):
That Castelini or is near do Well Sunset too expensive.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
I would push back on that, I sign a former.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
All Star that's damaged goods.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Instead, I would disagree with that. I would say that
Krawl probably did not want to give up the amount
of prospects that the White Sox were asking for.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
That's my guest.
Speaker 9 (35:41):
It's just kind of.
Speaker 17 (35:42):
Like, you know, it just reminds me of you know, say,
hey we signed Terry Francona. You know, we washed our
hands of it. What do you want from us? Just
like what Joe Burrow said, Hey, we you know we
signed t Higgins and Jamar So we're not gonna sign
sharf a Za, Darius Smith or anything like that because hey,
we did what Joe Burrow wanted.
Speaker 9 (35:57):
We're washing our hands of it.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
Yeah, I hear what you're saying, Chuck, for sure, and
thank you for the phone call. I think both organizations
want to win. I would even say I want I
think the Bengals want to win more than the Reds. However,
the way that the Bengals do things is understandably and
uh really well known, extremely flawed. It's just it is
(36:27):
that they don't do the right stuff often. That's you know,
well documented the Reds. It's just like.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
I don't I don't know, Like, I know they want
to win.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
I know they do, but they never really take the
actions to suggest that they're willing to do whatever it
takes to win. You know, a couple of years ago
when when they went on that twelve game win streak
and they were in contention heading towards the trade deadline.
I was just happy to be there. I was thrilled
with the fact that it was happening. And every day
(37:03):
Tony and Moe would kind of go back and forth like, Okay,
you gotta go, now's the time, go get a player,
help this team, and I was like, listen, this is
all icing on the cake. Set the team up for
the future. You don't have to be over aggressive right now.
Build a winner as it currently stands, and see what happens.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
I was wrong. They should have been all in.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
And I know Moe refers to that quote from Marty
Brenneman all the time, and he's correct, which is, you
don't choose when you contend, Contention chooses you. And the
Reds failed multiple times when contention shows them and now
I don't know that they are choosing to contend with
(37:46):
the way that this roster is currently built, and boy
is that disheartening. When we come back after Sports Center
at the top, here we'll talk to James Rapine speaking
of the Bengals in their front office. All of a sudden,
negotiation have become very very public between the Bengals and
Trey Hendrickson and that's not a good thing, or is it.
(38:07):
We'll talk to James about that. We'll talk to Rick
Brouring coming up as well. It's all coming up next
on The Moegger Show, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
This is Jack.
Speaker 6 (38:18):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Hello, welcome in our number two of the Moegger Radio Show.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
My name is Austin Elmore.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
I am not Moeger with you until six o'clock thirty
minutes from right now. The Reverend Rick Broing chimes in
his thoughts on Richard Patino's introductory press conference yesterday at Xavier.
I'll also ask him, is anything going on with the
(38:49):
mighty nurse, my mighty nourse in the transfer portal. We'll
talk about that. A brief basketball conversation coming up. You'll
hear from Richard Patino as well as part of his
converse yesterday. But I wanted to start this hour after
an hour of getting mad about the Cincinnati Reds and
(39:10):
another loss, I wanted to start this hour talking about
the Bengals, where I'm sure people will be mad about
them as well. And it turned out to be a
pretty newsworthy couple of days. The NFL Annual Meeting happening
at Palm Beach, Florida, and Zach Taylor spoke with the
media for a little while and then yesterday, almost as
(39:30):
rare as a solar eclipse, Katie Blackburn spoke with the
media yesterday as well, covered a lot of topics, including,
but not limited to, Trey Hendrickson and the stadium deal,
and she also kind of set the table for Trey
to respond, which Trey responded earlier today on the Pat
(39:50):
McAfee Show on ESPN. You'll hear some of that coming
up during the five o'clock hour, But I wanted to
talk about it with a man who covers the Bengals
for multiple outlets, most notably the Lockdown Bengals podcast and
Bengals Talk on YouTube and Sports Illustrated.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Aryan, do we have James Repine?
Speaker 1 (40:11):
I see, I see that the line is in use,
but I don't know if do we have James repeinne?
All right, James Repine now joins us. Uh, you just
called me a bad word and said you were busy,
but we agreed on this time.
Speaker 18 (40:23):
Hi, James, Yeah, I called it at like you said. Yeah,
you just called me out like four oh one. Okay,
Well that's a Terran problem. Not to throw him under
the bus, but that's a Terran problem.
Speaker 8 (40:35):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (40:36):
I think it's you because you text me said wake up.
See if if we're really pulling back the curtain.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
Hair Well, Tarren called you. You didn't answer.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
I said wake up. You called me an expletive, and
then Tarren called you again.
Speaker 6 (40:49):
I mean I called you a dog.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
You did not.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
Anyways, Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals and these negotiations now
all of a sudden being public. What was your first reaction, James,
to what Katie Blackburn said yesterday in regards to Hendrickson.
Speaker 6 (41:10):
I didn't think it was a big deal, you know.
I maybe it's because I've seen what, you know, how
Katie speaks or whatever.
Speaker 8 (41:19):
Like.
Speaker 6 (41:19):
I just I took it as the other they're negotiating
and that's it, and that's kind of what she threw
out there. The difference is is if you are negotiating,
then there would be some communication, and I think that
that's where the disconnect happened and why Trey was rugged
(41:39):
the wrong way by those comments.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
What then, was your reaction to what Hendrickson said today
talking about the lack of communication talking about respect and
still wanting to be in Cincinnati. What did you make
of what Hendrickson said today?
Speaker 6 (41:55):
Yeah, I think this is it's battle time, Attie. I mean,
that's what it is, and this is about to be
a battle because Try wants to get paid. And the
biggest revelation from today, I think is the fact that
he said, Hey, you guys told me last year say
you would take care of me, and it's not my
fault that that the market has changed. That's that's what
(42:18):
it is. That's the going rate. And I think that
that's probably where the disconnect year is and why something
hadn't ever felt imminent, like I not once have hip,
I've hiped thoughts like it was really from the moment
Jamar and c got done, it was like, oh now
the Bengals have shifted their focus to Trey Hendrickson and
(42:38):
everyone's like, oh, it's gonna get done, and you got
these people in social media like it'll probably get done
this week. It was like it was never there, It
was never even remotely close to that, and so I
I think that's the disconnect is the Bengals were like, yeah,
we definitely want to pay you, and then the market
shifted and that's what happens, and Tray's like, yeah, all right,
(42:59):
well pay me my get value, and the Vegals are like, yeah,
we wanted to pay you, which we want prepared to
pay you. And that's that's probably why, at least from
my vantage point, there's a giant boy, a giant just
whole gap in between where Trey is at and where
the Bengals are at. Maybe it's closer than I I
think that's just an opinion and a feeling, but I
(43:21):
think it's there's a huge gap there.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Trey said today that for the last three years he's
been trying to get a long term deal done with
the Bengals. If that's the case, why did he agree
to a short term extension before that?
Speaker 6 (43:36):
I well, he definitely asked for more years than in
twenty twenty two or twenty twenty three. Excuse me when
he agreed to that one year deal, and I think
they offered him that one year deal and he was like, hey,
that's I think it was like a twenty one million
dollar extension. He's like, well, that's that's good money for them.
(43:56):
That the problem is is now and what it did
to him because he keeps him off the market and
prevents him to some degree from getting market value from someone.
And now he doesn't control that, and so yeah, I
think on one hand, it put more money in his
pocket up front, and now it's kind of biting him
(44:18):
a little bit. And that's the challenge. I mean that
one year really does make it challenging for the Bengals
to get Tray what he's looking for, I think, and
at the same time make it tough on the Bengals
because they have him at such a steal right now.
And even though yeah, they do want to give him
a raise, there's a delicate balance and obviously they have
(44:41):
more leverage since he is under contract.
Speaker 1 (44:43):
I read on your website Bengals Talk SI that the
Bengals were never offered a first round pick for Trey Hendrickson.
If they aren't offered a first round pick for Trey,
why should he be paid like a top five edge
rusher in the NFL If he's not worth a first
round pick.
Speaker 6 (45:01):
Well, I think it's the Bengals paid him they would
get a first round pick.
Speaker 9 (45:07):
But when you're.
Speaker 6 (45:07):
Paying a guy and you have tould like people say
Miles Garrett was getting two once and that was never
the case. He was going to get a first rounder
and then something else for the Browns. He was never
getting the Browns two first round picks. That was never
a conversation. And the first rounder, I think was the
Bengals mindset when they gave him the permission to seek
(45:30):
a trade, was like, all right, well, we're going to
do this, and this is what we're looking for. And
I'm sure trades Campbell was like, all right, well, let's
let's see if we can get you that. And I
bet they map now.
Speaker 4 (45:45):
Could it if it does.
Speaker 6 (45:46):
Could that change and in the trade happened. Maybe? But
to your point, it's it's tough to if you're the
Bengals to ask a team, or it's tough for a team,
any team to say, all right, we're going to pay
Tray and also give up a premium pick. And by
a premium, I mean a first round pick that includes
(46:08):
a fifth year option. And because if that's the hit,
you're talking about a cost controlled player for five years.
And so yeah, there, it's a delicate, delicate balance there.
I get what you're saying. I think if he was
under contract, he would set a first round pick. Not
under contract, needs a new deal. I'm sure they got
offered a second, but I'm not sure it was much
(46:28):
more than that.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
They are now negotiating through the media. Katie, whether she
meant to do that or not is and Trey very
obviously meant to do that now for the second time
on the Pat McAfee show. Who does it benefit to
negotiate in the media.
Speaker 6 (46:48):
Well, I'm not sure that full disclosure, I'm not sure
it really benefits anyone.
Speaker 4 (46:56):
I think.
Speaker 6 (46:58):
Trey doesn't have a ton of leafy average year obviously
once to get paid. The Bengals, I don't think want
an unhappy Tray going into training camp, going into preseason,
going into the season, because that can make a difference
if you plan on him being on your team. And
so I think that there are a couple of things
(47:21):
to watch here, and so trade's going to happen. It's
going to happen probably in the next twenty two days.
You want to do it before the NFL Draft starts,
so you have an idea. Even if you're not getting
a first round pick, you know you have two seconds
that could change your approach. So if the Bengals did
have second thoughts and want to trade Tray the next
three weeks of the time to do it. I don't
think that's going to happen.
Speaker 4 (47:42):
And so.
Speaker 6 (47:45):
Can they. Will they be proactive, even though they had
the leverage to try to smooth this out, make Trey happy,
but also do it in a way that they're comfortable with.
I think that's a really big question now, and not
something we might not I mean, we might not get
answer to this for multiple months.
Speaker 1 (48:07):
Which of the following is the most likely outcome? Trey
Hendrickson plays on a new deal in Cincinnati, Trey plays
on his current deal in Cincinnati, Trey plays looks like
we just lost James. Repeat, I'll finish the question. Which
of the following is most likely?
Speaker 6 (48:27):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (48:28):
Trey plays on a new deal in Cincinnati? James? Are
you back?
Speaker 10 (48:36):
I I'm back, all right?
Speaker 1 (48:37):
Which of the following is the most likely scenario? Which
of the following is most likely? Trey plays on his
current deal in Cincinnati, Trey plays on a new deal
in Cincinnati, Trey plays for another team this season, or
Trey does not play football in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 6 (48:57):
I still think new deal. I still I think I
don't think he's playing on his deal. I don't think
that the Bengals. I just don't think anyone is going
to be comfortable with that because it's going to really
it's just going to make it tough for everybody. And
(49:17):
so I think they can find a common ground for
a new deal. Now, is it going to be everything
Trade's hoping for? I don't know. I think that's that's
the tough part. Is what's going to going to have
to probably happen is Trey makes a couple of concessions
because he wants guaranteed money, he wants a long term contract,
(49:38):
and he doesn't want all the you know, the incentives.
He made all that clear, and that's fine, incentives that
he can't control. Get it, totally, get it. But if
you want those things, then you're probably going to have
to take a little bit of a lower salary or
you're probably gonna have to do something because you don't
have a bunch.
Speaker 4 (49:55):
Of leverage here.
Speaker 6 (49:56):
They didn't have to give him permission to sink a trade.
They didn't have to. They don't have to get into
an extension technically. Right At the same time, if I'm
the Bengals, I would want Tray around. I also get
not wanting to pay him thirty seven million dollars per year.
So maybe it's a three year contract and they rip
(50:17):
up his current one year and they give him a
three year contract worth thirty three million dollars per year
and it's three for ninety nine where the good majority
of that second year is guaranteed and he gets guaranteed
money but doesn't necessarily hit top of market, but there's
enough long term money and cash flow there to get
it done. Like I think that there is a happy
(50:38):
medium somewhere. The thing that would concern me is that
the same thing that was discussed during Super Bowl week
is still being discussed, and it's the lack of communication.
It keeps coming up and that that is not.
Speaker 1 (50:53):
That's not a surprise though. That's the Bengals have sucked
at that forever. You got to know that, right.
Speaker 6 (51:03):
Sure, But that's that has to at some point they
have to realize, like, that's why today happened. It's all
because of communication. That's because of the quote.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
That to me is what makes me wonder if it
is a good thing that the players are like, you
know what, We're gonna start negotiating in the media to
try to expose the Bengals to get them to change. Like,
I wonder if that's a strategy that's talked about among
agents and players in the locker room.
Speaker 6 (51:33):
Maybe maybe, I mean maybe, And obviously it worked with Joe,
and like that's the next point. I'm honestly it is,
like because Joe first day of OTAs or first time
he talks this offseason. So yeah, I don't know why
how we haven't had the fact leader paid yet, but
we need we need to figure that out.
Speaker 8 (51:52):
He needs to be here. Like, but that's.
Speaker 6 (51:56):
What's Billy about it is. I think if you're in
that locker room, good luck painting the picture of a
Super Bowl caliber winning defense without Trey Hendrickson. And you
made really no significant needle moving editions. I get it,
you added a t. J. Slayton, a really quality nose tackle,
but let's be real here, they didn't make any super gigantic,
(52:18):
triinormous moves on defense. And so now you're going to
take Trey Henderson away too. Like it, that's a really
tough sell for the guys that are going out there
every Sunday, Monday or Thursday.
Speaker 1 (52:29):
James Rapine locked on Bengals and Bengals talk s I
and say Bengals talk on YouTube. James, thanks for making
some time for us today. Have a great, great Wednesday night.
Speaker 6 (52:40):
Sorry I accidentally hung up on you.
Speaker 1 (52:42):
That's all right, it wouldn't be the first time. The
honest that is James Rapine from Locked On Bengals. I
have a lot of thoughts on Trey Henderson that I'm
going to get to at the start of the five
o'clock hour. But when we come back, I want you
to hear what Richard Patino said during his introductory press
conference at Xavier yesterday. Some really good stuff in there,
(53:05):
and then we will get to the Reverend Richard Broing
Rick Broing, as you know him. I'm gonna ask Rick
if I can call him Richard, since Richard Patino doesn't
go by Rick. I'm just gonna, you know, I'm gonna
try to have a little bit of fun with this.
I've also trying to figure out if we can call
him Dick Patino because it rhymes with Rick Patino. These
(53:26):
are the important questions that we're trying to figure out
as college basketball the real offseason gets underway with Richard
Patino trying to figure out what players are going to
play for the Muskies next year. So we'll hear from
Patino next. Then we'll go to Rick Browing, and then
in the five o'clock hour, all Bengals, including five minutes
(53:47):
of what Trey Hendrickson had to say today on the
Pat McAfee show. It's all coming up next. This is
the Moegger Show on ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Austin Elmore
on the Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 12 (53:58):
Thirty, Cincinnati. He's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from do you.

but Xavier appeared to be winning. They hired Richard Patino
to be their new head basketball coach, and yesterday lost
in the shuffle of the Crown as you see, took
down Chris Holtman and DePaul In Las Vegas, Xavier was
introducing a new basketball coach after Sean Miller bolted to
go to Texas. The Muskies hired Richard Patino. Here is
(55:23):
a few minutes of the new Musketeer head coach during
his introductory press conference yesterday at Xavier, I.
Speaker 19 (55:32):
Was in a position where I did not need to
leave New Mexico, really really loved it, and for me,
more than anything, it was about the people that I
was going to work with. And it took me about
five minutes to realize that Greg is one of the
if not the best ads in the country, and in
order to do what we want to do, we've got
(55:52):
to all work together. So I'm extremely appreciative. He asked me,
you know, do you want to be the Xavier coach?
And before he even said it, I said, yes, I do.
Please give me a pen. I'm gonna sign this contract.
So very very grateful. I mean I've worked for him
for about a couple of days now and just smart, bright, innovative,
and he wants to win. So very very grateful for that,
(56:15):
Doctor Hannisch. I mean I had one phone call with you,
and I was just blown away by your enthusiasm about
this community and about Xavier, and I can see why
this place is as special as it is, and a
lot of it has to do with your leadership. So
thank you so much, both of you for believing in me.
That I do not take that lightly. I want to
(56:36):
say thank you.
Speaker 3 (56:38):
Greg talked about it. You know. I'm the head coach
at FIU.
Speaker 19 (56:43):
We have a really good year and I get offered
the Minnesota job at thirty years old, job in the
Big Ten. We had some success, we weren't horrible by
any means, but we did not have the consistent success
that I dreamed of. And after eight years, at about
thirty eight years old, thirty seven years old, I was
fired and that was very humbling and very sobering, and
(57:07):
I had no choice but to pick myself off the
mat acknowledge what I need to do better and grow.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
And the greatest thing that ever.
Speaker 19 (57:15):
Happened to me was New Mexico because they called me
and offered me a job. I'd been there one time
for a game in the Elite eight. My dad beat
West Virginia to go to the final four in the pit.
So I took a leap of faith and I would
not be at a dream job like Xavier without the
people at New Mexico, the fans, they treated my family
(57:36):
so very well. The administration, whether it was Eddie Nuniez,
Fernando Lovo, the new athletic director.
Speaker 3 (57:41):
They believed in me. Garnett Stokes are president.
Speaker 19 (57:44):
Believed in me, and I learned in order to succeed
at the highest highest level, you cannot do it alone.
And so many people there helped me win those conference championships,
helped me go to back NCAA tournaments, and I'm truly,
truly grateful for that. It was very, very emotional and
hard to say goodbye to so many special people, and
(58:05):
I would not do it unless I truly believed that
this was a special place in Xavior.
Speaker 3 (58:11):
Why here, Well, it's a couple of reasons.
Speaker 19 (58:14):
I am a not to bring up other schools in
our league, but I went to Providence College, and I
drive around this campus, and I walk around this campus,
and I see a lot of people that looked like
me at that age going through college in a similar
type campus experience.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
So the fit was perfect for me.
Speaker 19 (58:31):
I wanted to be at a basketball school. You know,
the landscape is substantially changing right now in front of
our eyes, and I truly felt like the Big East
is going to be at the forefront after all of
these things happened in April seventh and so on, to
where we're going to be competing for championships and we're
going to have a lot of resources that others are
(58:52):
going to be fighting for.
Speaker 3 (58:53):
So I always felt like if we could get to.
Speaker 19 (58:56):
A basketball school, It's not that I'm greedy and don't
want to share. I would certainly want to do that.
I want it to be in an amazing city. An
amazing city. Cincinnati is a place that I have spent
a lot of time, and I lived in Louisville for
a long time, lived in lectionon for a long time.
Speaker 3 (59:10):
We would come up here all the.
Speaker 19 (59:11):
Time, whether it's for Reds games, Bengals games. I've experienced
many games in this building and it's just an unbelievable
supportive community.
Speaker 3 (59:21):
And then I want it to be in the East.
Speaker 19 (59:23):
The Big East Conference is the premier basketball conference in
all of college basketball. Like minded institutions all about academics, certainly,
but basketball is always at the forefront of it. And
I've been in this building and I can tell you
it is a special home court advantage.
Speaker 1 (59:41):
Great stuff there from Richard Patino, the new head coach
of the Xavier Musketeers. When we get back, I have
questions for Rick Brooring, who covers the Muskies for Musketeer
Report dot com, about what exactly does Richard Patino do now?
How does he build a roster only a couple of
players currently Xavier Musketeers? What style does he bring to XAVI?

Speaker 1 (01:00:59):
I'm Austin Elmore And a man who typically appears on
this program on Wednesdays during basketball season is one Rick Broing.
And Rick joins us now even though it's not technically
basketball season, but maybe it is postseason basketball still being
played and the Muskies have a new head coach. He's
(01:01:21):
the Reverend Rick Bring joining us now. Hi, Rick, how
are you?
Speaker 4 (01:01:26):
What's going on? Audie?
Speaker 18 (01:01:28):
Well?
Speaker 1 (01:01:28):
I just wanted to talk a little bit of hoops
first and foremost, have we gotten any clarity. Are we
allowed to call Richard Patino Dick Patino just so it
rhymes with rick.
Speaker 20 (01:01:40):
I did not broach that subject at the press conference yesterday.
That was not on the priority list during the few
questions that we were able to get in there.
Speaker 6 (01:01:47):
But you know, maybe we'll circle back.
Speaker 4 (01:01:50):
As they said, all right, thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
Yeah, if we could get some clarity on that before
the start of the season, that'd be great. Your biggest
takeaway from the press conference yesterday was what.
Speaker 20 (01:02:01):
I think that this is going to be different. It
felt new. It felt like a different voice, a different
way of doing things. Already, Richard Patino's style of speaking
and just his manner of dressing the media was different
from what we've been used to with Sean Miller, even
the coaches before him at Xavier, and I think Greg
Christopher made it a point to acknowledge that during his
(01:02:26):
closing remarks before he brought Richard Patino on stage during
the press conference, he said that, you know, families expand,
and that's what today is. Xavier's family is expanding, And
I think that was to acknowledge that they are going
outside the family, which is not what they typically do
when they hire coaches, but things are different this time around,
and this was a bold decision by Greg Christopher and
(01:02:48):
the administration at Xavier, and if nothing else, I think
they should be applauded for that. You can argue whether
or not it was the right decision or if it's
going to work out well for them, but I think
it would have been easy to bring Chris Mack back,
and they decided to do something that maybe wasn't as easy,
and it felt because they felt like it was the
right decisions. So I'm certain I think that's at least
(01:03:10):
an admirable thing to do.
Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
I know it's old news and a mood point at
this point, but how surprised were you that it wasn't
Chris Mack.
Speaker 20 (01:03:19):
It was surprising at the time because there were so
many people that really felt it was going to be Chris.
And I don't just mean like you know, Joe from
Cheviot around the city. I mean like people that know
what's going on at Xavier felt very strongly that Chris
Mack was going to be the guy, or at least
was the leading candidate going into Tuesday night when everything
(01:03:41):
kind of unfolded and you know, low of thehold great
Christopher did a great job of keeping it tight, litt
as he went out to New Mexico and got the
deal done with Richard Patino and then ultimately let Chris
Mack know. And then we got that tweet from Chris
Mack saying that he was staying at Charleston. I mean,
it was a whirlwind evening, and at once it wasn't
(01:04:03):
Chris Mack. We felt pretty good about the information we
had that it was going to be Richard Patino, and
that was shortly reported an hour or so later. But yeah,
the fact that it wasn't Chris Mack on Tuesday night,
at least the way it happened so quickly at that
point was definitely shocking.
Speaker 1 (01:04:18):
You mentioned expanding the family. Why in this case is
it the right thing and how is that going to
benefit Xavier by expanding to Patino.
Speaker 20 (01:04:29):
Well, I don't know that we can say it is
right like that. They're trying it, they're hoping it is.
In their mind it's the right thing to do, and
I think the reason for that is, well, let's face it,
Xavier hasn't quite been the Xavier that we we started
to know over the last thirty or however, many years
where it got to a point where you almost expected
Xavier to be in the second weekend of the NSAA
(01:04:51):
tournament and that was becoming the standard. And I don't
know if that's fair or unfair, but I do know
that missing five of the last seven NCAA tournaments certainly
isn't what they're shooting for. I know that last year's
season isn't what they're going for. So I think there
maybe is the argument to be made that things had
run its course with that coaching tree and that way
(01:05:11):
of doing things. It's not that it wasn't extremely successful
for Xavier over the last twenty one years. If you're
talking about Sean Miller, Chris Mack, try to steal back
to Sean Miller, all those guys kind of doing things
a very similar way.
Speaker 8 (01:05:25):
That was very.
Speaker 20 (01:05:25):
Successful, and it led Xavier into the Big East and
they had a number one seed, a number two seed,
some of the best seasons in Xavier history.
Speaker 4 (01:05:32):
Without a doubt.
Speaker 20 (01:05:34):
They they did great things, but at this point over
the last several years, it just hadn't quite been the same.
They tried to recapture that magic by bringing Sean Miller back,
and it still really wasn't the same, and so at
that point, I think it's reasonable to assess the situation
and say maybe it's time for a breath of fresh air.
Speaker 1 (01:05:53):
When it comes to the x's and o's, the actual basketball,
what is a or what does a Richard Tino led
team look like on the floor.
Speaker 20 (01:06:03):
On the offensive end, I think you're going to see
something that's very similar to Sean Miller. In fact, Richard
talked about that yesterday during his time with the media,
saying that he and Shawn had actually shared notes and
talked about the way that they wanted to revolutionize their offense.
He made a change when he went from Minnesota to
New Mexico, playing a more uptempo style, the same way
Sean Miller did after he sat out following his stint
(01:06:25):
at Arizona, then came back to Xavier, he went with
a much faster system on.
Speaker 4 (01:06:29):
The offensive end.
Speaker 20 (01:06:30):
Both of them took their style basically from Gonzaga, and
so I think what Dager's been doing the last three
years offensively is going to look very similar to what
they're going to do under Richard Patino. Now on the
defensive side, it's a completely different story. For twenty one years,
Xavier has been a pack line defensive team, which means
you pressure on the ball and then everybody else is
(01:06:52):
in a help position, playing in the gaps, and you
try to stay in good position. You try to contain
the ball as much as possible, and you try to
be a very good defense rebounding team. Richard Patino said
multiple times yesterday he wants disruption, he wants to get steals,
he wants to swarm the ball, he wants to block
shots and have rim protectors. It's going to be a
(01:07:12):
very different style of playing basketball. They're going to be
denying passing lanes, They're going to be pressuring all over
in the half court, and so I think that's going
to be the biggest notable change on the court that
fans will recognize.
Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
He mentioned that he doesn't have a lot of players
right now. If you're Richard Patino, where do you start
when it comes to trying to build this roster? How
do you make this work?
Speaker 20 (01:07:34):
Well, I mean everyone's kind of dealing with that same thing.
Like if you're a new coach, you have to build
an entirely new roster. Now, it seems like in most cases,
but even if you're an established coach who's been at
your program. I mean, you might be having to deal
with something pretty similar. It might not be twelve or
thirteen players, but you might be having to find seven
or eight new ones all the same. So I think
(01:07:57):
everyone's kind of dealing with a year to year roster rebuild,
and that's going to be even tougher for Richard Patino
in this year's Xavier staff as they try to do
it on the fly, as they're getting to know new
people and doing a lot of other requirements that come
with the job. They did land a transfer from New
Mexico who came over. He committed last night. He's a
(01:08:18):
six' to nine face up, forward is kind of a versatile.
Defender started a lot of games for them last, year
but didn't have a huge impact on their, team only
averaged about five points per, Game SO i would imagine
he's more of a role, guy a guy that's gonna
potentially play some off of the.
Speaker 4 (01:08:33):
Bench but it's going.
Speaker 20 (01:08:35):
To be a lot of news turning over quickly. Here
we'll have it all covered at musketeer report dot com
over the next few.
Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
Weeks in college sports these, days with football and basketball,
specifically there's a lot of people being hired as general.
Managers we just saw The bearcats do. It we Know Andrew,
luck for, example is THE gm At. Stanford do you
expect something like that For? Xavier are there any plans
like that for them to hire A gm and or
a role like.
Speaker 20 (01:09:00):
That it's all the rage to talk about. THAT i
know fans want to say our team is doing it
because they're afraid other teams are doing it and they
might be gaining a competitive advantage by that. HAPPENING i
know it's something that has been talked. About it was
talked about Before Sean miller, left And Richard patino said
yesterday when we asked him point blank about.
Speaker 4 (01:09:19):
It that it was something he was open.
Speaker 20 (01:09:21):
To but one thing THAT i think we have to
consider when we're talking about hiring general managers in an
era where you're also paying your, players and you're at
a place Like xavier with good but still limited, resources
can you really afford to pay a high level general
manager who's actually going to be worth? IT i, mean
a professional type of guy that's running your roster and
(01:09:43):
finding you players and being a shark when it comes
to getting the deals. Done are you really going to
be able to afford someone who's shrewd and good enough
to do that to provide value to you when you're
also supposed to pay your. Players or is that money
going to be better spent just paying another power forward
or point guard or shooting, guard or paying a higher
level guy than the ones you've. Got i'm not convinced right.
(01:10:06):
Now it seems like a lot of these general manager
roles that people are getting are more media flexus than anything.
Else it's AN nba player Like Steph curry helping out
by sharing his name With davidson so they can use
it in A gm. ROLE i Think Trey young did
the similar thing With. Oklahoma i'm not sure That i've
seen a lot of high level real gms come back
(01:10:28):
to the college level and are expected to make a
huge difference.
Speaker 1 (01:10:32):

not that's what holds it. Up sometimes it takes him
to say yes to. Something we have all the respect
in the world for. Him he's been a great. Player
we're happy to have, him and so maybe we'll find
(01:19:16):
a way to get something to. Work we're just going
to see where it. Goes end quote that Is Katie
blackburn talking about the negotiations With Trey. Hendrickson AND i
said earlier That i'm the guy who typically defends the,
manager defends the. Coach tony AND i have butted heads
(01:19:38):
many times about me Defending Zach, taylor AND i don't do.
THAT i don't say. THAT i don't have those opinions
BECAUSE i want to be the. CONTRARIAN i don't have
those opinions BECAUSE i believe that the organization of those
people can do no. Wrong i'm always gonna be honest
about the way THAT i, feel AND i feel Like
(01:20:00):
Katie blackburn is. Right katie is. Right Trey hendrickson was
a nobody Leaving New orleans for free. Agency he had
mainly been on special. Teams he had gotten some sacks
and played, well but was a smaller piece of a
(01:20:21):
better defense around. Him and in twenty twenty, one as
a free, agent he signed a four, year sixty million
dollar contract with The. Bengals they gave him a, Shot
they gave him an, opportunity and to his, credit he
made the most of. It he produced at a great.
Rate two years into that four year, deal The bengals
(01:20:46):
gave him an extension at twenty one and a half million.
Dollars they did right by. Him they, said, hey we
know you've outperformed, that we know you want. More here's an,
extension here's a. Raise here's one and a half million.
Dollars the total, cash and, that by the, way is
this year of his, deal the total cash That hendrickson
(01:21:08):
has made since he's been. Here in twenty, one it
was nineteen point nine. Million in twenty, two it was
eleven point. Nine in twenty, three it was, eighteen in twenty,
four it was, fifteen and this year it's about to
be twenty one and a. Half but already paid through
four years is a total of sixty five million. Dollars
(01:21:31):
and you're going to add on that twenty one million
dollars at the end of this. Extension that is in
total five years of over eighty million. Dollars, trey you
can make the, argument AND i would listen to. It
has outperformed those, numbers AND i get. It but earlier
(01:21:51):
today on the pat McAfee. Show hendrickson said that he's
been negotiating and trying to get a long term extension
with more guaranteed money for the last three. Years and
if that is the, case you mean to tell me
that after year one of a deal you started trying
(01:22:12):
to negotiate a long term extension and then after year
two you accepted a one year.
Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
Extension why did you accept that? Deal would be my.
Speaker 1 (01:22:23):
Question you've now accepted Two bengals style, offers which they
often get criticized, for but that's the way they do,
Business so just use that in this particular. Exercise you've
now accepted two of those, deals and even when.
Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
You were, unhappy you showed.
Speaker 1 (01:22:42):
Up and then when you wanted to request a, trade
The bengals were, like you don't get to request a.
Speaker 2 (01:22:50):
Trade we just gave you an.
Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
Extension and then this year he comes back and him
and his agent say we want to request a. Trade
we can get a first round. Pick The bengals are,
thinking all, right we're probably tired of dealing with. This,
sure if you can go get a first round, pick
go for. It, well come to find, out nobody offered
him a first round. Pick if you're not worth a
(01:23:13):
first round pick to any team in The National Football.
League why should you be worth upwards of thirty two
million dollars a? Year why should you be worth another
long term? Extension if nobody in the league's willing to
give up a first round pick for, you why should
you be worth that amount of. Money trey only plays
(01:23:36):
in one. Spot he is a below average run. Defender
he does not move around the defensive line compared to
the rest of the players at his. Position, yeah he's
in the, conversation but he's not the elite of the.
Elite the only time that's happened is the sacks this.
Year outside of, sacks he doesn't do much. Well he's
(01:23:59):
not a great. Tackler he doesn't make a lot of
tackles for. Loss he doesn't bat passes down at the
line of. Scrimmage he's a really good pass rusher who
The bengals defense stunk with last, year and a good
chunk of his seventeen and a half sacks came against
two backup. Tackles and keep in, mind against a backup
(01:24:23):
tackle In Fred, johnson remember, him the Former bengal The
Philadelphia eagle backup. Tackle trey did. NOTHING i Like Trey.
HENDRICKSON i want him to be A. BENGAL i don't
think that The bengals should offer him more than thirty
million dollars a, year AND i think him continuing to
get big mad about the fact that they won't trade
(01:24:46):
him or offer him a. Deal and now to the
point where HE'S i don't know that i'd say he's
throwing a, fit but now the point where he's now
negotiating in the, MEDIA i would be, like, dude come,
On they've already given you a lot more than you ever.
Expected and if you wanted more than, this why did
you accept a twenty one million dollar one year extension
(01:25:08):
a few years ago if you knew it was more than.
This those are my thoughts On. Trey so all this
happens With Katie blackburn yesterday and Today trey shows up
on The pat McAfee. Show here is five minutes Of
Trey hendrickson With pat McAfee earlier.
Speaker 4 (01:25:28):
Today, well first, off, yesterday it Was april.
Speaker 21 (01:25:31):
FOOLS i was traded to all thirty one teams and
had like one hundred different. Contracts so the one THING
i was hoping that Wasn't april fool's joke was that,
article but called my agent found out it was, not you,
know and that was a little disappointing because communication has
been poor over the last couple of. Months you, know
(01:25:51):
that's something THAT i hold in high. Regard you, know
they have not communicated with my agent. Directly it's been
something that's been a little bit. Frustrating but, again this
is the business of.
Speaker 4 (01:26:02):
It you.
Speaker 21 (01:26:03):
Know i'm incredibly blessed to be in THE, nfl you,
know And i'm excited to be A bengal, right you
know too to have a year right THAT i, have you,
know remaining on my. Contract we can get into that real.
Quick last year and the year, Before i've been talking
about long term, contract guaranteed, money things like, that you,
(01:26:23):
know and it was discussed with me in a meeting
Which i'm very fortunate to have had with my agent
that we would get something done this.
Speaker 4 (01:26:31):
Year so that being.
Speaker 21 (01:26:33):
Said last, year go out and play play to the
level you, Have we'll get it. Done that was communicated with,
me so that, basically you, know this year is going
to get worked. On they also reiterated that at the,
combine so that just kind of clears the air on
that and moving forward the happiness of my.
Speaker 4 (01:26:51):
Camp you, know they are more than welcome to call.
Speaker 21 (01:26:54):
Me i've had my cell, phone same cell phone number
since high. School open line of community is always open
with me and my. Agent so if they have anything
they'd like to, Discuss we've been nothing but willing to.
Speaker 22 (01:27:06):
Listen, obviously sounds like you love The, bengals just like
you reiterated At Radio. Row now what you said there
has been not a lot of. Communication what do you
mean by? That BECAUSE i think a lot of us
would assume after The tea And jamar deal get done
and then they're, saying, well they're hoping for a clean
sweep With Trey.
Speaker 2 (01:27:21):
HENDRICKSON i believe was reported By mult's.
Speaker 22 (01:27:23):
Windsiders we assumed THAT i was moving to you to
get your deal.
Speaker 2 (01:27:27):
Done when was the last time have You are you guys.
Speaker 22 (01:27:29):
Currently in the middle of negotiation or conversation or how's
it staying in that particular?
Speaker 21 (01:27:35):
Aspect, WELL i, mean whenever we have something to resolve
in my, family my wife AND i we discuss it
and we get to a point where we know we're
reaching a. Decision you, know And i've been open and
transparent about however it looks for me In cincinnati or.
NOT i want The bengals to benefit from that and
through this, process you, know. Communication WHEN i say it's been,
(01:27:57):
poor it's.
Speaker 8 (01:27:58):
Been like here and, there you.
Speaker 21 (01:28:00):
Know and and respect To jamar and T i don't
want to take anything away from all the great things
they've accomplished in their. Careers they deserve everything that they've.
Gotten uh and no doubt in my mind they're going
to excel in The National Football. LEAGUE i have a
tremendous respect for both of. Them but when it comes
to my, situation it would have been nice to, know you,
(01:28:20):
know in some, ways like, hey we're gonna put you
in the, cue no problem with. Me my wife AND
i try to be as humble as possible As christ's loving,
people so we don't we don't have any desires of
being highest paid or you, know first in. Line we
try to be as patient as. Possible but when you
have things Like OTA's coming and guys Like Sam, hubbard
(01:28:42):
who was in a tremendous captain for our team last,
year that leaves a vacancy for that And i'm excited
to fill. That but how do we reach that before
we get, there and those are the things that matter
when you're talking about A Super.
Speaker 4 (01:28:56):
Bowl it's in the little things and the little, details.
Speaker 10 (01:28:58):
Obviously so you're happy to be A.
Speaker 14 (01:28:59):
Bangal what with that in, mind you talked About OTA's
mini camp training. Camp we know you're a football player
first and foremost the professional one at. Debt do you
have a deadline in mind where you want this to
be done, with either with The bengals or where you
reach a point and you, say, okay It's june, first,
whatever let's get a trade figured.
Speaker 10 (01:29:16):
Out do you have a deadline?
Speaker 4 (01:29:18):
Deadline that's a great.
Speaker 21 (01:29:20):
QUESTION i think three years AGO i began to ask
for a long term contract with guaranteed, Money so those
deadlines have kind of just all been a. Blur i've
just been hunting. Quarterbacks so at this, point it's it
is what it. Is you, KNOW i don't know IF
i can put a time stamp on. It and that's
where you, know to read WHAT i read yesterday was,
(01:29:41):
confusing like, it's, uh it's my. DECISION i would have
been willing to sign three years, ago two years, ago
and this year it was communicated with me that we
would get something done this. Year and also like, it
reiterated With duke's comments at the. Combine SO i kind
of treat it like a house. Now so like house
(01:30:02):
values have gone, up you, know it's it's the cost of,
living and you, know and in some ways life continues
to go. Forward AND i Know i'm a football. Player
i'm training to be the Best Trey HENDERSON i can.
Be and however that, looks and whatever team we can
address that.
Speaker 1 (01:30:20):
That Is Trey henderson earlier today on The pat McAfee
show a couple of things with. That let's say that
you know that's true that there has been little to no.
Communication let's say that the initial offer came back for The,
bengals and they were going to offer, him you, know
two years at fifty million. Dollars let's say that's the.
(01:30:42):
Case so he gets he's here for the next three.
Seasons let's say that's the case twenty twenty, five twenty twenty,
six twenty twenty, seven and he makes on average twenty
five million dollars a. Year that is well below the
thirty one and a half million dollar market. Value but
(01:31:03):
it is a long term deal where you're paid very,
well you get a, raise you would make more Than
Daniel hunter In, houston who IS i think a comparable
pass rusher age and, everything and you would be In
cincinnati for the long. Term but let's say that's not
the deal he. Wants let's say he doesn't he finds
(01:31:27):
that deal, insulting and he says that to The. Bengals
trey and his agent and The bengals will, say, okay
well what do you have to. Offer have you returned
to the, table BECAUSE i know this happened with T
higgins a year. Ago The bengals low ball T higgins
and they were so offended by his offer that they
didn't even return to the. Table and even if you're
(01:31:53):
offended by the bengals low ball, offer negotiations are a
two way. Street you've got to get back to the
table and tell them why you don't like. This SO
i would like to know For, trey and maybe this
was asked of. Him he was on there for a long,
TIME i was producing. Earlier i'm on the air. NOW
i haven't seen the whole, thing but maybe it was
(01:32:14):
asked of. Him have your has your agent reached out
to The bengals because you say they haven't spoken directly
to you or to your. Agent has your agent reached
out to The bengals and how far apart are You
and you don't want to break. Records that's, fine that's
good to. Know the other part IS i want to
(01:32:34):
know where to raise my. FAMILY i want to know
where we're gonna. Be, buddy you've been here for five
years just. About you're going to be here from twenty
one until the end of this coming. Season that's what
your contract. Says and, also you're in The National Football.
League you're never just going to stay put and that's never.
(01:32:56):
Guaranteed that's the life you signed up, for being a
professional football. Player AND i have a hard time buying
this whole. All we just you, know we want to be,
humble and we want to wait our, turn and we
just want to know where we're going to start our
life and our. Family, buddy this is A National Football.
League none of that is guaranteed to you, Ever and
(01:33:19):
if you wanted more clarity on, that you should not
have accepted an offer that kept you under. Contract you
could have been clarifying all that this. Year bengals already
took care of you once and, yes your market has gone, Up,
yes and the flexibility for The, bengals is, There, yes
but also you knew who you were doing business. With
(01:33:40):
The bengals have sucked at communicating with people for a long.
Time they are not good at. It they will not
get better at. It it has been a. Problem they
make people feel like. Crap you know. That maybe negotiating
in the me is his way of fixing. That And
(01:34:03):
higgins did it a little, bit chasing them did a little.
Bit burrow got into it a little. Bit maybe that's
the whole. Thing expose The bengals for being cheap if
you want to call them, that WHICH i don't know
that they, are but expose them for not being people
persons and not being all that nice and being poor. Communicators,
sure that's. Fine you want to expose them for all.
That do you think they're gonna. Change they've changed a,
(01:34:27):
lot but that hasn't. Changed they're not good at that
stuff and this probably doesn't help. It and you could
have controlled your own destiny here by Saying i'm gonna
be done after twenty twenty. Four i'm not gonna be
under contract with twenty twenty. Five but you, TOO i
just hit the microphone out of. Mine you took that
(01:34:48):
extra deal and then you outperformed. It but you know
how this team. Operates there's no guarantee that they're gonna just,
say oh, Yeah, trake come back. In even if they said,
that that doesn't mean that you are going To they
are going to automatically match what you think your market value.
Is and ALSO i talked about this earlier With. TONY
(01:35:11):
i don't know that he's going to be all that.
Missed in the locker, ROOM i outlined all the reasons
why he's not a top five in my mind edge
rusher in THE. Nfl he's never been a team, captain
and all of a, sudden Because Sam hubbard's, gone now
you want to be a team?
Speaker 4 (01:35:27):
Captain What.
Speaker 1 (01:35:30):
Tray kind of rocks to the beat of his own.
Drum and that's. Fine not everybody's a. Leader not everybody's
got that. Personality not everybody has to be that in THE.
Nfl but they stunk defensively the last two years with
him getting seventeen and a half. Sacks they are going
to draft an edge. Rusher so if they trade, him
(01:35:53):
they get a pick for, him if he sits, out
if he, retires if they move on from, him is
it that big of a Big is it that big
of a? Loss is it that big of a big.
Deal i've always gotten the sense that The bengal's going
to try to make him play on his current deal
and then he will leave and go somewhere, else and
The bengals will be fine with. That we've seen him
(01:36:14):
do that over and over and over. Again THAT i
think is what they're trying to, do because they're probably
not going to come off their number at this, point
and you've already accepted Two bengals like contracts before they
have all the. Leverage that's my. Guess we'll take a,
Break we'll come. Back I'm i'm, Sorry, Taron i've ruined
the clock. ALREADY espn fifteen.
Speaker 12 (01:36:32):
Thirty CINCINNATI'S espn fifteen thirty, traffic and.

going on with The Cincinnati. Reds red's lost earlier, today
but congratulations are in order to their. A's Hunter, green
the right hander for The Red legs, today struck out
(01:37:29):
eight batters and one of those strikeouts was number five

five hundred. Strikeouts cubs are up by the way eight

This Reporting SPUNKS espn fifteen. Thirty you, know Mo.
Speaker 2 (01:39:08):
Egger is not here. TODAY i. Am my name Is Austin.
Speaker 1 (01:39:11):
Elmore but because moe is a highly skilled social media,
influencer he's still working and he posted Today's United Heartland
insurance poll. Question you can find it At. Moegger pretty simple.
One Trey hendrickson Versus Katie? Blackburn who you? GOT i
voted For. Katie sixty percent of respondents right now Have Trey.
(01:39:35):
Hendrickson Maybe i'll Ask Jeff carr that question as he,
begins because he probably doesn't want to talk about The,
reds even though we have to talk about The. Reds,
jeff who you? Got Trey hendrickson Versus Katie?
Speaker 9 (01:39:47):
Blackburn, WELL i think If katie's the left, Tackle i'm
Taking Trey. Hendrickson but If katie's negotiating a contract on Taking?
Speaker 1 (01:39:55):
Katie, okay all, right, YEAH i think that's a smart.
Move why do The reds.
Speaker 4 (01:40:02):
They can't?
Speaker 9 (01:40:02):
Hit you, know outside of the fourteen run, game it
sort of feels like if you hit number four through
number nine in This red, lineup you're an easy. Out
outside of the guys of Friedol McLean And la de La.
Cruz i'm not really thinking there's a lot of run
production and they've got to get. Something and it's not
(01:40:25):
just who their cleanup hitter, is it's beyond. That it
feels like there's just a whole swath of guys that
you got plenty of time to get up. IT i,
MEAN i know we got a pitch clock, now but
you've got plenty of time to get up and go
get you some more beverage or food whenever those guys
are at the.
Speaker 1 (01:40:41):
Place, yeah, Honestly Jeff carr is our Guest locked On
Red's podcast With Steve offfenbaker And Red's Talk Sports. Illustrated
we knew offensively there would be some, struggles but did
you think it would be this? BAD i, mean the
bottom of that lineup altogether is just comple.
Speaker 9 (01:41:00):
ATROCIOUS i, mean the good news Is i'm seeing some
unlucky numbers when it comes to batting average on balls and.
Play but and you hope that they're going to write
the ship on off speed and breaking pitches because it's
early on and they don't quite have that timed up just.
Speaker 4 (01:41:16):
Yet but, NO i was a little bit more.
Speaker 9 (01:41:19):
BULLISH i wasn't saying that this is going to be a good,
lineup BUT i thought this was going to be a passable,
lineup the kind of lineup that supports the pitching staff
that only gives.
Speaker 4 (01:41:28):
Up one run in nine. Innings and if you can't do,
that you got real.
Speaker 9 (01:41:32):
Problems because this pitching staff has looked absolutely, fantastic and
Both Carson spires And Hunter green have combined for thirteen
innings and two total runs in those thirteen, innings and
both guys took the.
Speaker 4 (01:41:47):
Loss it's just it's.
Speaker 1 (01:41:50):
Unfathomable and outside Of Opening, DAY i think you could
be mostly pleased with the way the bullpen has performed as.
WELL i think they've been relatively. Solid let's talk about
well one of the positives, though that's starting Pitching Hunter
green again, today now sixteen strikeouts on the. Season what
has been the key you think to all of these
starters being so, effective and then Especially Brady singer just
(01:42:12):
the other night.
Speaker 9 (01:42:14):
Efficiency these guys are just not walking. People the league
average walk rate last season was eight point five, percent
and the starting staff is right around five percent this
season so.
Speaker 4 (01:42:26):
Far AND i get.
Speaker 9 (01:42:27):
It It's, Thirdly Hunter green's the first guy to make
his second start of the. Season but we're talking about
a kind of pattern that if that, continues everything else
is just going to be a little bit. Easier because
when you're not giving up free base, paths you, know
free base, runners then the guys that do end up
making contact eventually against the pitches That Hunter green is
(01:42:48):
just not letting them put into, play then you're not
going to have to worry about more runs being. Scored
i'm okay if you give up the solo home run
every so often A Grand american ballpark is. Win there's
guys on base and that ball leaves the. Yard that's
been the problem in years.
Speaker 1 (01:43:04):
Past mention the, BULLPEN i think they've been. Fine what
have you liked or disliked from The reds bullpen through
the first six.
Speaker 9 (01:43:12):
Games i've really liked How Ian jeboe's bounced back after
that first, outing and as much as we begrudged the
fact that he was the guy that came out in
the ninth and in an opening, day his last couple
of outings he's looked pretty. WELL i, mean you, know
On monday night he was able to Or tuesday night
he was able to pitch for four outs of clean,
baseball AND i want to see that. CONTINUE i would
(01:43:35):
say the one concern THAT i have a little bit
Of Brent, STOOD i think that he's going to have
to be a guy that you do need to strategize.
AROUND i get it he's never been a, fireballer but
when when you're throwing fastballs at eighty four miles an,
hour they've got to be on the, corners and then
his off speed stuff dipping down into the low seventies
kind of feels like he's got to follow a fast
(01:43:57):
throwing fireballer or else it's going to be a lot
easier to barrel him. UP i know he was part
of the relief staff that pitched in the fourteen run
ball game that ended up giving up a few, runs but,
OVERALL i think that was kind of one of those
outliers that you're, like, well it's just get us.
Speaker 4 (01:44:14):
To the end of the ball.
Speaker 9 (01:44:15):
Game you're not pitching with the same dusto that you
would in a different. One BUT i do wonder a
little bit about how that's going to play up in tight.
Speaker 1 (01:44:22):
Situations specifically with the outfield and the lack of production.
Offensively are there any realistic solutions within reach for The
reds to go.
Speaker 9 (01:44:33):
After hopefully It's Austin hay's coming off the inter of.
List now it's gonna be. Tough LIKE i feel like
there's some prospects that they could look to, deal it's
just the willingness of other teams accepting. Prospects that was
the thing That Nick kral said a lot this offseason
was that whenever he reached out to other teams for,
(01:44:54):
trades they were looking for major. Leaguers and while The
reds definitely have you, know talent in the major, leagues
they don't have an excess of talent in the major
leagues to deal, from and so it's got to be
from the prospect. POOL i wonder a little bit about
if The White sox will waiver any on their reportedly
ridiculous asking price For Luis, robert although ANYTIME i see
(01:45:17):
A White sox, Game i'm Seeing Luise robert do something
That i'm pretty Sure reds fans would boo him for
as they Booed Ian jebo the other. Night So i'd
be curious as to how that would even work. Out
and who else is going to be available to DEAL
i Think you're probably looking at teams like The marlins
and The, rockies and the options there are not that.
Speaker 2 (01:45:38):
Inspiring are you anti booing?
Speaker 9 (01:45:43):
DEPENDS i think you got to do a, LOT i,
think AND i think it's got to BE i think
it's got to be. Warranted AND i think the reason
that people Boo Ian jibbo is because he blew a
save on Opening, day but he got booed in his
third appearance of the season On Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (01:46:03):
Night i'm, like come, on, man give the guy a.
Speaker 9 (01:46:05):
BREAK i think that there's there's been players in the
past that you can, do but a lot of it
just had to do with their off the field. Stuff
there's not a lot of guys THAT i look at
And i'm, like, man the ineptitude of your performance has
led me to boo you in your home, Stadium LIKE
i JUST i don't get that feeling.
Speaker 1 (01:46:27):
Understandable how do you measure success in The francona?
Speaker 9 (01:46:31):
Era gotta be wins. Right it's tough right now with
how this roster is acclimating to what we hoped they
would acclimate. TOO i think there was a an expectation
that things were just going to be completely flipped on
(01:46:52):
their heads and no mistakes were going to be, made
and they continue to make some of the mistakes we
saw last Off sea or last. Season so having switched the,
manager Now Nick carl's got to be looking at his,
personnel and when it comes To Terry francona's part in,
that he continues to say that he's not making any
demands and that if he is doing his, job then
(01:47:14):
they are winning and they don't.
Speaker 4 (01:47:15):
Have to go out and get.
Speaker 9 (01:47:16):
People so you do have to look at that and
are they getting the wins that they. NEED i felt
Like Opening day was a game that they should have,
Won but outside of, that they've faced a lot of
games that it feels like they were just overmatched in so,
far which definitely has me a bit concerned about the.
Speaker 4 (01:47:33):
Personnel.
Speaker 9 (01:47:33):
Again So i'm looking at this and, saying they got
to win some ball, games and he's definitely got a
much longer leash than you, know the typical modern day
sports fan would allow him to. Have, sure so it's
got to be the long haul right with. Baseball but right,
now it's just it's super frustrating to see them come
out of the gate and look about AS i gash
(01:47:55):
as they did with Any david Bell, Era.
Speaker 1 (01:47:57):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely WHERE i let you. Go red's heading
up To milwaukee to be in a four game weekend.
Set can you give us a scouting report on the
twenty twenty five edition of The Milwaukee.
Speaker 9 (01:48:08):
Brewers so far they haven't pitched a, lot that's given
up about as many runs to The New York. Yankees
BECAUSE i think The reds lineup will maybe score in
the month Of. April so maybe The reds lineup can
get right against this pitching staff that last year really
had their, number AND i think a lot of it
(01:48:28):
definitely has to do with the starting. Rotation but the
bullpen for The brewers just isn't as formidable as it
was last. Year SO i think there's a chance here
for The reds to definitely. SPLIT i think the expectation
is a, split but there's a chance here to take
that exercise in demons and go three out of. Four
they do, THAT i think we're right back on the
(01:48:49):
good vines that we have back before opening.
Speaker 1 (01:48:51):
Day, Fantastic, jeff thank you for your time and we'll talk,
soon all, Right.
Speaker 4 (01:48:56):

Today's red's. Loss and you, know IF i could Ask
(01:50:15):
terry a, QUESTION i would ask, Him, terry are you
going to yell at these guys so that they could
start getting some?
Speaker 23 (01:50:21):
Hits IF i thought yelling at him would get us
a bunch of, Hits i'd go do right now that
just you, know, AGAIN i yesterday's in the rearview, mirror
talk about.
Speaker 15 (01:50:33):
Today we just.
Speaker 23 (01:50:34):
You, know we're we didn't do. Much they they they really.
Pitched we didn't have a lot of, opportunities you, know
and it's a hard way to. WIN i will, say
our pitching has been so good at least we've had a,
chance which it's a big stress on you, know when
(01:50:54):
you're not. Scoring that's put the strain on those. Guys
they've done a really good.
Speaker 24 (01:50:57):
Job you've had a costly based running mistake there in
the eighth was to steal on in that.
Speaker 15 (01:51:02):
Situation, yeah and we it's just miss timed.
Speaker 24 (01:51:04):
It you mentioned the. PITCHING a hundred said he didn't
have his secondary. Stuff uh his first time, around it
looked like they had it. Today your impressions, up, well,
YEAH i thought he. Was he was really really. GOOD
i mean they they backed up a couple of. Hits
that's how they, scored cause he was.
Speaker 15 (01:51:22):
Tremendous doesn't play, IT.
Speaker 9 (01:51:27):
I mean the all, there what is that that's just
a special?
Speaker 15 (01:51:31):
Player special?
Speaker 23 (01:51:32):
Player, YEAH i mean the guys who kind of told
me WHEN i came here this see he'll he'll he'll
go to those balls like nobody've ever.
Speaker 15 (01:51:39):
Seen and they weren't. Lying it was pretty.
Speaker 22 (01:51:41):
Impressive obviously only six, games but how were at least
too early to start.
Speaker 15 (01:51:46):
Looking at move around the line.
Speaker 6 (01:51:47):
Up maybe can do guys in it out for a.
Speaker 23 (01:51:49):
WHILE i think we haven't been. Played everybody M i'll
always do. IT i, think, Well i'll look at who's
pitching it. Tomorrow Was, nester so we'll have some right
he's in there. Tomorrow but you're, right it's a little
early to, panic you, know how.
Speaker 17 (01:52:08):
You cly As i've tried to work counts and especially
the guys are thrown the other guys throwing a lot of.
Speaker 15 (01:52:15):
Strikers, yeah it's a little bit of catch twenty.
Speaker 23 (01:52:18):
Two you, know you've if a guy's pounding strike one
and you're in a, hole that's not really going to.
Work you, know today and yesterday they threw all their
pitches for, strikes so you have to respect not just
one pitch or, two but actually, three and that made
it really difficult for.
Speaker 15 (01:52:39):
Us all, right seventy fourth. Strike, yeah that was, impressive very.
Speaker 1 (01:52:45):
Impressive that is The reds Manager Terry. Francona after today's
loss to The Texas. Rangers The reds have dropped back
to back. Series they will travel To milwaukee to start
a four game set with the Brew. Crew Nester cortes
will pitch for The reds or for The. Brewers it
will Be nicolodolo going For cincinnati tomorrow. NIGHT i do
(01:53:10):
think it's too early to press the panic, button BUT
i look at the way they've. Played they've had three
boneheaded base running. Mistakes they have not worked counts very.
Well they have the fewest walks In Major League baseball
through the first six, games just, eleven and they aren't
(01:53:31):
hitting with runners in scoring. Position they've been cast stealing
a few. Times they didn't attempt a steal at. All
Against San francisco the other day or whatever it was
the first opening, series they didn't attempt to steal hardly at.
All SO i need to see some signs of, progress
and maybe going up against a team In milwaukee that's
(01:53:52):
struggling is going to be helpful for you and one
of the things that this team has to improve. Upon
no matter matter what is playing In, milwaukee it's been
a house of horrors for. Them hopefully starting tomorrow night
they can switch it. Up thank you to my, Guys
Tarren bland for producing today and putting up with. Me
