Speaker 2 (00:03):
I see a lot of seas, a lot of seas.
What's up, connect New Muleager ESPN fifteen thirty. Appreciate you

I said outside. NFL Draft is over. James Rapine in

And so there's there's a lot to get to with
the draft. And I've got some things that I like,
(00:47):
and I've I've got some things that I'm skeptical about.
And I would imagine, I would imagine what I'm skeptical
about is what you're skeptical about. Let's let me just
sort of start by by doing this so well, it
might be sort of a flawed exercise if you will
to do draft grades. I think most of us agree
that that's the case. Flawed exercise doing draft grades is
(01:11):
kind of stupid. But we can say that, and then
what do we all do? We all try to find
every draft grade we can, so like every major outlet
that covers football, they'll assign grades, and we could say,
what's kind of unfair. You can't do this until after
a couple of years. It's a little bit too knee jerk.
But what do we all do? We all can't wait
to see what every person who covers the draft, what
(01:34):
grade they gave our favorite team, in this case for
most of us, the Bengals. So I don't have all
of them here, but just canvassing some of the major sites.
NFL dot Com, B minus Y'allhoo Sports, Bengal C, Fox Sports,
A B, CBS Sports, A C. Mel kiper Junior, a C,
Pro Football Focus, A C, The Eringer dot Com C
(01:57):
the Athletic did it a little bit differently their grade.
Their evaluator did in so much handout grades as he
just ranked the draft classes one through thirty two. He
had the Bengals at number twenty nine. So you're not
going to see any a's here. You're also not going
to see any f's here. Kind of middle the pack,
(02:18):
middle of the road, a draft that doesn't move a
lot of people all that much. So if you believe
the Bengals had a great draft, sort of feels.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Like you're on an island.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
And if you believe the Bengals had just a disastrous draft,
well you're also sort of on an island.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
That's kind of what I'm looking for.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I'm looking for, you know how we do this sometimes
before the baseball season starts, where there's kind of a
consensus no matter you know what kind of season the
Reds are going to have, there's sort of a consensus
where you know, like this year, it's like I think
they're gonna win between eighty two and eighty four games.
And I'm always interested in people who think they're going
to be awful or awesome the same thing here, because
(03:02):
in either case, I think you're kind of by yourself.
If there's someone who believes this draft was an unmitigated mess,
well I've got a phone line for he had five
point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. Or if you
think you know what home run this draft is gonna
propel the Bengals to unprecedented heights five point three seven
(03:23):
four nine, fifteen thirty. I'll also ask you this, Do
you feel better about the Bengals Super Bowl chances today
than you did on Thursday morning? I gotta be honest
with you, I don't. I don't. This draft for me,
top to bottom doesn't move the meter all that much.
I can only speak for myself. This draft top to
(03:46):
bottom doesn't do a lot for me, mostly not because
of the players they took, but because of the positions
they did not address. Let me start with some things
I really like about this class, starting with Schamar Stuart's
thirty nine pressures. Now, we were on the air on Friday.
(04:06):
We were lucky enough to have Shamar Stewart on with us.
If you missed that conversation, it's available on the iHeartRadio
app thanks to long Next Sports Grille. And I asked
him about you know, you had just one and a
half sacks, that's what everybody's focusing on, and he was
very quick to point out the thirty nine pressures. I
don't know how much the thirty nine pressures is going
(04:27):
to translate to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I also don't know what sack total he could have
posted at.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
At Texas A and M I had a brain fart there.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I don't know what sack totally could have posted at
Texas A and M last year that would have made
everybody go, yeah, great pick with seventeen overall. But thirty
nine pressures are thirty nine pressures. And you take any
statistical figure in college that we see from a player
and we try to figure out, how can that translate
to the NFL. If a guy had a fifteen hundred
(05:04):
yard receiving year in college football across twelve or thirteen games,
you know, we would go pretty good statistically, sign me
up for that, and then we would focus on you know,
measurables and trades, et cetera, level of competition. Let's do
that with the thirty nine pressures. If that translates, if
the ability to apply pressure translates, I believe for Shamar Stewart,
(05:26):
who has undeniable physical gifts, the sacks will come. Is
he gonna have seventeen and a half like Trey Hendrickson, No,
But I believe if this thing that he was good
at in college, if it translates to the NFL, and
you have to acknowledge he's obviously going to be going
up against bigger, better offensive linemen trying to chase down
(05:47):
quarterbacks who are better at getting out of trouble and
getting rid of the football before they're sacked. But if
he's disruptive, I do subscribe to the belief that disruptions
are does equal production. If they're continues to be disruption,
he is gonna be an asset to the Bengals pass rush.
It's gonna help create turnovers, help create havoc. He's maybe
(06:09):
gonna help some of his teammates accumulate sacks of their own,
and he'll get his if the pressures continue, the sacks
will come. By the way, you're gonna hear Luke Keekley
in just a little bit rave about Shamar Stewart. I
know in the camp of liking the pick, not loving it,
liking it like the pick of Dylan Fairchild looks the
(06:31):
part aggressive blocker, still ascending, kind of raw. It is
interesting in this day and age twenty four starts in
the SEC for some evaluators still equals lack of experience.
By the way, Kelsey Conway pegged that one in her
mock draft. She joins us at four to twenty. I
like that pick. I like the Taj Brooks pick. Now
(06:52):
there's a lot of wear and tear. You're not drafting
Taj Brooks to be what he was at Texas Tech,
which is an absolute workhorse. If you're a UC fan,
you watched Brooks last year against the bear cast thirty
two carries in what was a forty four to forty
one game, ran between the tackles, ran dudes, over scored
two touchdowns, put up one hundred and seventy two yards.
(07:12):
This guy could really help as a sixth rounder in
situations where they need a yard or two, maybe on
the goal line, maybe third and short, maybe areas where
they don't want a quarterback sneak because Joe Burrow doesn't
want a quarterback sneak.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Here's where I'm skeptical.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I'm skeptical about Demetrius Knight, who seems like a wonderful dude,
and there's a part of me that LIFs twenty five
year old guy, like, all right, they drafted a legitimate
adult and a guy who the more you read about him,
it feels like he checks every box from an intangible
standpoint maturity, leadership. But there's a real striking lack of
(07:51):
starting experience for a guy.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Who played six seasons of college football.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Also, I feel like if you wanted him, you could
have traded down a couple of spots. Also, I'm not
entirely sure he wouldn't have been there in the third round,
meaning maybe they could have taken a safety or my guy,
Tate Ratlage in round two. I can't help but think
that they could have added a pick and still gotten
Demetrius Knight, or waited a little bit longer, and in
(08:16):
a draft where they took two linebackers, gotten someone at
least as good. What stands out more than anything this
is undeniable. No defensive tackle, no interior pass rush help,
no safety help. This offseason has largely been defined by
the Bengals doubling down on mostly the same defense they
(08:38):
had last year and adding a few picks here and there. Right,
adding a few picks here and there, including the first
round er who does I'll admit have a question mark
covering over him and some free agents. If I would
have said to you three and a half months ago,
the first couple of waves of free agency will come
and go, the draft will come and go, and the
(09:00):
Bengals will have at the end of the draft four
defensive tackles on their roster, you would have said, Mo,
you're out of your mind. Now you probably would have
been right, but not in relation to that. The Bengals
today have four defensive tackles on their roster.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Man. That's a tough one to swallow a lot of us.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I don't recall anybody telling me, MO, defensive tackle is fine,
don't touch that. We're gonna be go sign one guy.
Like it is striking looking at this draft. Number one,
they used half their picks on offensive players, none of
them on defensive tackles, none of them on safeties. Like
(09:45):
they're not just bringing back Genostone. They're doubling down on
Genostone more than anything, they're doubling down on Al Golden.
I don't believe the Cincinnati Bengals have ever put as
much on a new coordinator like they're putting what they're
putting on Al Golden. I don't recall I've been rooting
for this franchise for forty years. I can't recall a
(10:09):
new defensive coordinator in a year where the objective is
to win the Super Bowl. I can't recall there being
a coordinator on either side of the ball where they
have gone to him and gone dude, we need you
to achieve dramatically better results, but we're really not going
to do all that much with the side of the
ball you're working on. Comparatively speaking, they haven't done all
that much. Two free agents, three draft picks, and the
(10:33):
first rounder comes with legitimate productivity questions. Even if I
want to focus in on the pressures, Al Golden better
be good. Al Golden better be as good as advertised,
or we're gonna be talking about the Bengals being on
the outside looking into the playoffs this year. Why do
I say that, Well, because it just happened, and they're
(10:56):
bringing back largely the same group of players with as
of today, some of the same deficiencies that plagued them
last year.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
It's remarkable.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Quarter after three I got a pull question on Twitter
while we're at it, thanks to United Heartland Insurance.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
The Bengals draft was.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Hi, James, I have an idea.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
Maybe we should do a show from like noon to
one or something.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
It'd be fun, be fun, and then see if eventually
it can be expanded to three hours.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
Yeah, I expanded the three hours, and and some washed
up quarterback can take over. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
I'll run that past management.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I was talking about Austin Almore, of course, sure he was.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I'm sure he was really good. Give me one word
to describe the Bengals draft class.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
Safe Safe, I think, I really I look at every
pick and it's like, I don't think that guy's going
to be a complete bus that's out of the league
in four years. And from Shamar Stewart, I that to
build the risky pick. The more I look at and
the more I think about it, I think there's the
risk is does he actually hit and become a star
(14:08):
when you had guys that project more favorably to be
a star, right the Derek Harmon's, the Jahad Campbell's, But
from a is he going to be a quality NFL player?
I think Shamar Stewart's pretty safe, just because he's such
a freak and I think he has the right attitude,
mindset and mentality.
Speaker 7 (14:23):
And after that all these guys.
Speaker 6 (14:27):
Anythink that Demetrius Knight is going to start, and while
I wasn't a fan of the pick at that time,
start right away. Made of the right stuff. Why wouldn't
you start for this team for quite some time? Dylan's Fairchild,
same thing. And then you can go on down the
list where I think all of these guys are not
only going to make the team, but contribute as rookie.
So I think safe is probably the word of.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
The day Demetrious Knight, in particular, if they really wanted him,
couldn't they have waited?
Speaker 6 (14:54):
Yeah, yes, yes, they should have at least traded down,
and two teams around them traded down. And look, there's
really no way. And this is coming from someone that
talks to Demetrius, really likes him. I think he's going
to be an awesome person and player.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
For the Bengals.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
There's no way in the world you take him over
Tate Ratlige, who I know, because one I know the
Bengals like Tate Ratliche. This isn't made up or some
kind of all well, they didn't have him on their board.
This isn't like Joha Campbell, like Johigh Campbell. Medicals wasn't
in consideration at seventeen. Kate Ratlige was one of the dudes.
And so to say, all right, we're going to pass
(15:33):
on one of the best guards in this draft class
and then we're going to take this linebacker. If linebacker
was that big of a NEEDMO either prior reevaluate those
medicals on Joha Campbell or address it in free agency,
because what it did is it set the tone for
the rest of the draft, you take linebacker where a
(15:55):
top guard is there, and now in round three you
have to get a guard you can't get.
Speaker 7 (16:00):
Kevin Winston Jr.
Speaker 6 (16:01):
I think it's one of, not only one of the
top safeties in this class. But I had no business
falling the round three and the Titans got to steal there,
so they they kind of backed themselves into a corner.
Speaker 7 (16:11):
And that's.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
That's the tough part about the drafting, because I don't
really have an issue with any of the players in
a vacuum, but the when and how they did it
and how they approached it, I have an issue with
that because they really had a shot to hit it
out of the park and instead they're like, I'll walk,
I'll take my base, and it's like, I just feel
like it hit.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
The home run button, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
I just I feel like, and maybe this is an
unfair way of putting it. I just feel like if
in multiple positions, position groups, because they took two linemen
and two linebackers, if you were going to do that,
you had to add a pick, and they didn't.
Speaker 7 (16:50):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
And I think they tried, you know, I don't think
that they necessarily thought that this is going to be
the case.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
But it's hard guard.
Speaker 6 (17:01):
Really hard to get trades done. And I know they happened,
but it still is because it's hard for the value
to line up.
Speaker 7 (17:06):
One team's trying to win, Vegas are trying to win
the deal.
Speaker 6 (17:10):
I get all that, but I just come back to
that round two pick and to say, all right, well,
we're going to get to Mutrius Knight Junior.
Speaker 7 (17:19):
Here.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
It sounds good because of what he can bring to
your defense and now needed it. But if it was
such a big need that you're going to prioritize it
over probably the third best guard in the draft, maybe
higher on some like plug and play right guard. If
you're going to do that, then maybe you should have
addressed linebacker before the draft. And that's a I just
(17:41):
I can't believe that they went that route, especially because
they still got Barrett Carter. They still got a linebacker
that they really really liked and had a higher grade
on than a fourth round grade where they ended up
picking him. And so you could have ended up having
a Tit rat Ledge at Kevin Winston Junior and then
a Barrett Carter and or maybe you just go Ratledge
and dyll't fair child and you have three Georgia offensive
(18:02):
linemen and you feel great about your line. I wouldn't
argue that one bit, but they kind of backed themselves
into a corner and went that route.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
What is the more glaring omission?
Speaker 2 (18:13):
If you will no defensive tackle or no safety defensive tackle.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
They needed a guy that would give them, give them
a little juice. And I think they probably take Walter
Nolan over from our Stewart if he was there. You
didn't get there, so you go with from Oar Stewart. Fine,
you're sticking with your board, but you got to get
one somewhere instead.
Speaker 8 (18:41):
You look up and.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
It's like, all right, so how are you? How are
you asking out golden? And again this is the linebacker thing.
If you're born with two linebackers, what's more important? Another
body in the defensive tackle room that you hope can
give you a little pressure, a little juice. And to
your point, this is what happens when you have six picks.
(19:02):
I mean, it didn't It didn't need to be even
a day two guy. They could have waited until day three.
Ty Robinson out of Nebraska is someone that I thought
made a ton of sense. For them, but he doesn't
get to them at pick one nineteen. He goes one
to eleven to who the Philadelphia Eagles, who really don't.
Speaker 7 (19:17):
Evaluate defensive line.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
So I think adding a pick training down and then still.
Speaker 7 (19:23):
Getting Demetrius Knight Junior.
Speaker 6 (19:26):
Maybe you get a fourth round pick, like you probably
could have moved down to sixty five from pick forty
nine to sixty five and still got him.
Speaker 7 (19:33):
You have got in a really sizeable.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
Pick, you might that's a fourth rounder, and so maybe
that would have been enough to address defensive tackle. Yeah,
I'm that that's the spot.
Speaker 7 (19:44):
Where it's like.
Speaker 6 (19:46):
And it just really hurts you not that safety isn't
a huge issue, because I think it is. And at
the same time, I would much rather have another guy
up front that Kareek Havoc than another safety.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I just from a defense I agree with you from
a defensive perspective. If if I would have said to
you after the season ended, here's how the off season
is going to unfold on defense. Yes, they're going to
hire a new DC, but their defensive acquisitions are going
to be TJ. Slayton and Ooron Burke's and then in
the draft they're going to use half of their six
(20:21):
picks on defense, and that's it.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
You would have said, what.
Speaker 6 (20:28):
They must have done a hell of a lot on offense.
They must have the great wall in front of Joe Burrow.
That's what I would have said, you know. I think
that's what's so frustrating about this offseason in general, is
what you knew they had too many needs going into
the draft.
Speaker 7 (20:45):
Right, we knew they only had six picks. We knew
they weren't going to be able to address everything. We
knew that.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
We were going to be having this conversation. Yes, I'm like, a, right,
they're not going to have to do with down in
one area or another. And I hate it because it
doesn't have to be this way. And I think some like, ah,
stop being so negative and it's like, no, like the
standards should be high. This is the Joe Burrow era
right to maximize Yes, from the first time in franchise history.
(21:16):
By the way, if they do that, it gives them
so much equity that they can half ask free agency
for a decade and it won't matter because everyone will
be able to say, hey, we got that ring. And
that's what's weird to me about it is we're they're
like football lifers. They have to understand that, like if
you did push a little more and you were a
(21:37):
little more aggressive and it resulted in the ring, then
you can go back to your old ways and that
you could just say, oh, we've done it, we know
when to do it when not to. And I just
I don't think they've done enough. That doesn't mean that
what they drafted didn't help.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
By the way, if.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Your first three picks are starting for you, you know,
and we're underwhelmed, especially on day two by the picks,
and some people day one and day two, maybe a
roster isn't good enough, right, maybe you know, because I
think those three guys are going to start, And so
that's that's where it's like, just doesn't feel the way
a championship contender should feel, given how important of an
(22:14):
offseason this was for the Bank.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
The word overhaul was used a lot in November, December,
and January. What they've done on defense is not an overhaul.
They've added guys, but it's not an overhaul when I
think a lot of us felt like an overhaul was needed.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
Yeah, And the one that really, honestly I think gets
me and is why they're so comfortable in the defensive
tackle room, and I think they're going to regret it.
And I like them a lot, but signing bj Hill
to that deal, it kind of prevented them in their minds,
I think, from one signing someone else or two really
(22:51):
pushing it in free agents or in the draft to
get one of these defensive tackles. And they felt kind
of comfortable with it. They had invested in it last year.
And it's like, man, I just don't like that because
I think they need more juice up the middle. I
think that's what matters, especially when you're going up against
a Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes, a Josh Allen, some
(23:11):
of these guys that you're planning on beating and getting
to the super Bowl, and it's going to be tough
if you can't get consistent pressure up the middle.
Speaker 2 (23:22):

GOOD i want to start With Demetrius knight because you
wrote about, him and in the course of reading what
you wrote About Demetrius, knight the second round draft pick
of The bengals From South, carolina the twenty five year old,
linebacker you embedded a tweet from back In november when
you were watching him critically on. Film when we put
that film, Up Demetrius, knight what do we.
Speaker 8 (25:45):
SEE i, mean you see a you see a modern
game in a old school body is kind of what
the best way they've phrased. It he's right around six
or two shade under he's two. Hundred well he's two
thirty five at the, combine but he played one like
the two forty sixty eight range somewhere in that. Ballpark
but then he goes to combat runs four five, eight,
(26:05):
Right so, like this is a kid that looks like
a modern old School mike linebacker on, film but a
guy that has sidelined a sideline range has a really fascinating.
BACKSTORY i understand he's twenty five and during his rookie,
year so most people kind of overlook him a little,
bit and he's kind of a one year wonder in
THE sec this past year if they're playing At charlotte
previously the previously. Season but, Man i'm Really i'm really
(26:26):
infatuated with him as a, player even before he was
drafted To. Bengals AND i, know Obviously Al golden and
his defense linebackers are a very important ingredient for communication aspects,
obviously but they really highlight the linebacker position just in.
General SO i really like everything That demetrius kind of
brings them the. TABLE i think he's a sideline to
sideline Modern mike linebacker that brings a lot of tunes
(26:48):
to the.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Table you you reference something that stands out to, me
and like in reading about him and listening to him
after The bengals took, him you can't help but be
impressed by his, maturity his, story like just brings all
these really cool intangibles to the. Table team captain in
his one season At South, CAROLINA i think there is
a relative lack of like starting experience for a guy
(27:11):
who played six seasons of college.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Football why is?
Speaker 8 (27:13):
That, yeah it's a fascinating. Backstory so he was originally
in the twenty nineteen recruiting. Class he played four seasons
At Georgia, tech and so originally he was recruited as
a dual threat quarterback To Georgia. Tech so he was
a dual threat quarterback that eventually got converted to the
defense side of the. Ball AND i think anything it's
like the modern physical development that needs to happen, obviously,
(27:34):
Right like he was one hundred and ninety something pounds
come out of high school and he had to bulk.
Up he had to grow into his, frame had to
learn how to play defensive football and a more wide scale,
perspective and it took a little time to match. EIGHT
i think during his course of his time At Georgia,
tech didn't play a ton in those four, years mostly
a special team or backup he. Reserved but then he
goes To charlotte his fifth season and he kind of
(27:55):
explodes and he gets an opportunity with THE covid year
to play one additional seas in that sixth, year AND
i just think that you're seeing a late bloomer because
ultimately he was not playing a position that was very
understandable to, him Right like it was a little bit
foreign at. First and he's continued.
Speaker 7 (28:10):
To develop and develop and.
Speaker 8 (28:11):
Develop AND i do think that what he did in
THE sec this past year At South carolina on a
team that has a lot of dudes Like Nicki, MINWARI Tj,
Sanders Kyle Canard, On Toma Dollan stewart in a couple of, years,
like there's a lot of great football players in my,
defense and in my, opinion the leader of that group
Was Demetrius, knight and he did that in just one.
Season So i'm excited to see the maturation BECAUSE i
(28:33):
do think that he is a late bloomer for, sure
BUT i do think that he has continued to trend
upward the last two.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
Years opusit all, right let's flip it back to round.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
One Shamar stewart trades versus production or in his, case
lack Thereof where do you?
Speaker 8 (28:45):
STAND i, mean it's he's the ultimate wild card in
this class because you could tell me that there is
a world where he Becomes Danil hunter and who also
had it kind of a lack of college. Production, well
there's also a world where he just doesn't figure it out,
Right so like this is an ultimate boomer bus there at.
SEVENTEEN i feel good knowing About Coach golden and just
(29:07):
the development that he has shown me the last couple
of years of bringing some younger guys along and taking massive,
jumps especially in like year two under his. System BUT i.
CAN'T i can't calm anybody's nerves And cincinnati as a,
FAN i can't.
Speaker 7 (29:20):
Like this is the.
Speaker 8 (29:21):
Ultimate he can be, great he can be, bad and
there's probably not too much in. Between LIKE i don't
See Schimar stewart as being like a good football, player
either he's going to be one of the best in
THE nfl or he's not going to be much of, anything,
right so wild card for, Sure talent is. THERE i
do think TEXT a AND m used him a little bit,
poorly which does give me hope that he can reach that.
Ceiling but ultimately this is A this is absolutely a
(29:42):
Boomer bus. Pick there's no way around.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
That how DO i put in the context WHEN i
try to project what he's going to do at the
next level the thirty nine pressures he had last year
At TEXAS a AND. M, YEAH i think one again the.
Speaker 8 (29:55):
CONTEXT i think that While Mike elko at TEXT a
AND m is a great de to, MINE i don't
Love Jay bateman his deaf that's a. Coordinator AND i
think you look at Even Nick, skeleton who's the other
talented edge that went the second round To. CAROLINA i
think both of them were very misused and. Mismanaged Like,
skeleton they put like thirty pounds on him for some
reason where he was at At, purdue and then we're
(30:16):
kind of shocked that he wasn't as explosive as he
was For Shamar, stewart like he was a player that
was pretty, inexperienced didn't play a ton of the previous two,
years played you, know a little bit in twenty, twenty
or played a decent mountain twenty twenty, three but not
like full. Scale this is his first year as a,
starter as a guy that was going to be the,
dude AND i just think they asked him to do too,
much to be, Honest Like i'm a big fan of
when you get a player on the field for the first,
(30:38):
time make sure they're good at one thing first before
trying to ask him to do a million different. Things
like they need a, baseline they need a, foundation AND
i don't think they build a great foundation For Shamar.
Stewart so, again like this is this is not, Me
like there's no coping here, Right like this is ultimately
like this is gonna be one of Those bloomer bus.
Picks there's no way around. It BUT i do think
that there is some context to explain why the production
(31:00):
hasn't quite been. There seventeen is a little bit early
for my, blood, obviously BUT i will, say if you
can figure out the long ser With Trey hendrickson and
get him here for you, know the foreseeable, future it
does also call my nerves a little bit to know THAT.
Shimr stewart gets to learn from him a little, bit,
right the art of being a pass, rush of the
art of being of understanding pass rush profile and understanding
(31:21):
how to attack leverage and create angles and take advantage
of those angles like that kind of calls my nerves
a little. Bit but if he's not a part of the,
future then you get a little bit even more uneasy about.
Speaker 10 (31:31):
It to be, Honest.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Ryan roberts eight is sports Dot com at rise And
draft On. TWITTER i Wanted Tate ratlage in the second.
ROUND i didn't Get Taate ratlage in the second. ROUND
i Got Dylan. Fairchild how much of a difference is
there between the, two.
Speaker 8 (31:46):
H, Man you're not gonna like my answer this. One
probably it's a it's a really big, difference to be
honest with. You there there are similar profiles as far
as their heights and. Weights raleyges but around six to,
six three hundred fifteen pounds shut Fair child's in, shore
so he sixty five through. Fifteen he's played a ton of.
Football he's a pretty physical. KID i just think he's pretty,
(32:06):
Stiff LIKE i just don't think he works up the
second level incredibly. WELL i think he's lateral ability is
subdenly belows for THE nfl. Standards SO i understand why
he was the pick of that spot because THE nfl
has just generally been a little higher on him than
LIKE i think myself and just like other media people out.
There BUT i would be lying to you IF i, said,
LIKE i love that pick eighty one did seem pretty
(32:28):
high for. ME i thought he was more of a
fourth to fifth, rounder to be honest with.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
You so WHAT i think a lot Of bengals fans
look at when they see the class is maybe six
players who end up being QUALITY nfl, players maybe a
whole bunch of guys who end up getting second, contracts
maybe a whole lot of guys who end up helping
this team. Immediately but it's it's hard to ignore what
they didn't. Do they didn't address defensive tackle and they
(32:51):
didn't address. Safety is there anywhere in this draft where
you felt like it would have made sense for them
to go in either of those areas instead of what
they allutimately decided to.
Speaker 8 (33:00):
Do it's, honest it's malpractice not to get a defensive
tackle in this, class LIKE i. CAN'T i can't excuse the,
staff both from the scouting side from the coaching, Staff
like in this, class which is a historically deep defensive tackle,
class LIKE i cannot remember a volume this. Deep you
come out of here and you don't have a defensive
tackle in this, Group AND i kind of look at
(33:21):
Like Barrett carter in the fourth round of pick one
nineteen for, me is not bid value in a, Vacuum
like if you tell Me Brett carter one, nineteen, like,
cool he's a good.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Player i'd liked that.
Speaker 8 (33:30):
Spot he's a good wool, linebacker can, run we'll play special. Teams,
Awesome but you're already drifted a lot of, yeah like
you got a guy. Already so maybe at that pick one,
NINETEEN i think like a. GUY i think a. COUPLE i,
MEAN i think for, SURE i believe IF i remember, CORRECTLY.
Cj west From indiana was still there on the, board
IF i remember at one, nineteen and, like there were
(33:50):
still other positive defensive tackles that could have come in
and at least had a role in a. Defense SO
i look at like the second linebacker pick, there don't
hate it again in a. Vacuum but when you pay
has so many talented defensive tackles in this, class and
you can even move back to the defensive like pretty
good safety and corner class, too that they refused to
kind of hit, it you, know hit on the board as.
Well SO i think that was probably the puzzling spot for,
(34:12):
me was that fourth round of one.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Nineteen, yeah the math to me just didn't work. OUT
i THINK i said this to you when you joined
me before the. Draft you, know if you look at
their team, needs it looks like a team going through a.
Rebuild they only had six, picks and yet they used
two on linebackers and two on offensive. Lineman nothing against
those individual, players AND i get it you draft, players not,
positions but when you have this glaring need specifically at
(34:35):
defensive tackle and then you could add safety to the,
conversation to take four players across two different position, groups
that doesn't make a lot of sense to.
Speaker 8 (34:44):
Me, YEAH i think we were talking about. It we
did a live stream earlier and we were talking about.
Speaker 11 (34:50):
It.
Speaker 8 (34:50):
SIMILARLY i can't remember who ea the team it, was
but it felt like it just feels like it doesn't fits,
right and it feels like it's a little package a
strength with an already strength when you have more needs
than just like two positions to your, point, Right so
it just felt like there wasn't a great plan. THERE
i mean maybe, ultimately Maybe Bearreck carter was their top
(35:13):
rank guy on the board by a landside and they
were like that's our, Guy like we can't pass up
best player, available blah blah blah blah. Blah but, ultimately
you're a first year defensive. Coordinator you have holes. EVERYWHERE i,
mean we talked before the draft And i'm, like The
bengals are like the easiest to the draft for for
me at this.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
Class it's like.
Speaker 8 (35:29):
What level of the defense do you want to pick?
Speaker 12 (35:31):
From?
Speaker 8 (35:31):
Right, like, good you got. It AND i feel like
they missed the mark. HERE i mean the cornerback was
a deep, class safety was a good, class interior defense
line was a great. Class SO i do think that
it is it's a little bit OF i think it's
a little bit of near sights to not come out
with a couple of those guys BECAUSE i just think
that there were we never want to press for need
(35:52):
over best player available too, often but when you have
so many holes on your. DEFENSE i do think you
need to prioritize those types of.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
Things, yeah well. SAID i cannot thank you.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
Enough you were kind enough to join us before The
National title, game before the, draft and now, afterward and
we love having you.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
On thanks so, much.
Speaker 7 (36:09):
MA'AM i appreciate, Bro thank you so.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Much That's Ryan roberts eight is sports Dot com On
twitter at rise in draft all right five one three,
seven four nine fifteen thirty. Malpractice like when the season,
ENDED i couldn't find anybody who didn't believe The bengals
don't need to overhaul their. Defense does it feel like
(36:33):
they've overhauled their? Defense and Is Al? Golden this is
the question of the. Season, now the question of the.
Season Is Al golden good enough.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
To take this.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Defense from one of the league's worst to one that
you can win a championship With with a draft class
that included three, guys a free agent class that included
two guys at a whole bunch of dudes who were

up the middle for.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
A while it certainly did this. Past year that has not.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Been addressed and it was a GOOD good, i mean
we WENT from I think dayner's. Mock draft it was,
Last Week, derek harmon right, Defensive tackle oregon safest pick in.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
The draft we went from, you know wondering Are.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
The bengals gonna address defensive Tackle in round one to
them not addressing it at all in. The draft that's.
PRETTY remarkable a couple of, other things non. Draft related
redsmen three Straight, in colorado which felt almost mandatory after
losing two out of Three. In Miami the rockies came
into this series with. Four wins you had to. Get three.
(38:48):
They Did noelve marte was certainly worth not giving, up
on Which the reds didn't and never were, going to
but there were many who wanted. Them to thank god,
they didn't because he's swinging a hot, bat now he's
piled up a lot. Of hits A corus field hit

(40:31):
good although they did just take two out of Three.
From milwaukee If the reds can win two of their,
next three they will have Closed out april at seventeen.
And fourteen that is a very. Selective endpoint BUT if
i would have said to you or anybody else when
they were three and seven to start the season That
(40:52):
the reds Will end april with a, winning record you would,
have said first, Of all i'll. Take, it secondly. Probably,
not well if they they lose the, next three then
they're gonna have a losing Record. For april but right
now they're fifteen and thirteen with a decent chance to
end this month with a.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Winning record.
Speaker 7 (41:10):
That is.

Speaker 3 (41:57):
Louis cardinals your phone calls here. In, JUSTICE SECOND.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
I i don't want to be unfair to the Players
the bengals have taken in this. Draft class, In fact
i'm kind of Leaning Pro, shamar stewart which we're gonna
talk about here a little bit. Later on BUT if
i would have said to you when the, season Ended the,
(42:25):
bengals defense which is the number one reason why this
team was on the outside looking in when the, playoffs
Started the bengals defense is gonna be kept. Largely intact
they're gonna add two guys in, free agency ONE. In,
tj slayton who is very good against the run but
not known as much of a, pass rusher and the
(42:47):
other a guy That the eagles are gonna be pretty
willing to. Let walk plus three, draft choices one an
edge rusher with one and a, half sacks the other
a twenty five year old linebacker who is kind of
a Two year wonder and then another linebacker that many
(43:08):
believe will make an instant impact on special teams but
is maybe a little bit too small to really contribute.
On defense you would, have said, what, now, Look Man
demetrius knight may be exactly What the, Bengals want and
maybe What the bengals want is what they need right,
this downhill, sure tackling run. Stuffing linebacker he certainly seems
(43:29):
like a, great Kid And, Shamar stewart i'm gonna lean
on the thirty nine pressures and hope, that that along
with his, physical traits translates TO the nfl And Maybe
barrett carter.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
Can help.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
BUT if i would have said to you and the,
season ended here's what they're gonna do, on defense you would, Have,
said mo you're. Kidding me or if that's what, They
Do duke tobin should. Be fired yet that's where. WE
are i. CANNOT recall i cannot recall a coordinator who
in year one is being asked to Do What al
golden is being asked. To do and by, THE way
(44:05):
i feel like he has signed off on a lot.
Of THIS like i would have a hard time Believing
That al golden has been, like, you know banging his
Fist On duke, tobin's table going sign more, free agents
use all six picks, on defense get rid of all
these players like they're kind Of Given al golden well
last year's, bad defense and a few.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
Other DUDES but i think he's cool.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
With it if, This Works al golden is maybe the
greatest defensive coordinator in the history of. The franchise he
might be the best defensive coordinator IN. The nfl if this,
doesn't work, oh boy. OH boy i think skepticism is, earned.
Here man, like again a. Defensive tackle it's it's alarming
(44:49):
how little, they've done especially as it relates to getting
pressure up the middle, passing situations or as a normal
person might, say it improving the interior pass. Und rush,
Like dude and by, the way can you imagine how
They Traded. Trey hendrickson now you, might, say, well yeah
but then they would have, more picks like at the
(45:10):
very least they Still Have. TREY hendrickson i, don't, know
man as draft, STRATEGIES go i can't tell you how,
many times whether it was in the course of interviewing
draft experts or talking to some of the people that
cover the team here locally or just giving my own
OPINION that i would say something similar, To, this Hey
the bengals team needs look like the team needs of
(45:32):
a team coming off a four, win season not a
team coming off a nine, win season and certainly not
a team harboring legitimate. Title aspirations and yet here. They
are here's all the. Team NEEDS and i would agree
that defensive tackle was a more glaring team need, than
safety but they still could have used some safety help.
(45:55):
This offseason they. Got none they added no co owners.
From outside they've not boosted their pass rush up the middle,
at all either in free agency or in.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
The draft it, May work i'll certainly allow.
Speaker 10 (46:12):
For that.
Speaker 3 (46:14):
Gotta be honest, With you i'm skeptical that. It will.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
And judging by how we talked about last, YEAR'S team
i certainly Don't think. I'm alone they had all these,
team needs, and again man like they may have drafted
to really really, good linebackers like they legitimately may have
(46:40):
drafted two guys who could legitimately. Legitimately Help barrett carter
may be undersized but perhaps makes a close to.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
Instant impact And Maybe demetrius knight.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
Is terrific, and yes you could Argue the bengals needed
kind of a swing tackle to go along with the
guy who's gonna, play guard And Maybe jalen rivers provides
that there are questions about the number of injuries he had,
in college but he did play. Both positions, but, still
man that feels like in round five kind of a
luxury pick because of these large glaring needs at defensive
(47:15):
tackle and, at safety AND again i think defensive tackle is.
More glaring there were a lot of us who criticized
What the bengals didn't do in free agency at, defensive
tackle or if it wasn't, being critical it was at, least,
wondering hey what about? Defensive tackle what about pass rushing?
(47:35):
Defensive tackle there were a lot of folks who looked
at the approach in free agency at safety, and, said
hey what? About safety and what we were told was
just way to. The draft well the draft came and
went no, defensive tackle. No safety so now What al
(47:57):
golden better have?
Speaker 12 (47:58):
The?
Speaker 2 (47:58):
Answer uh Dovvey, In atlanta YOU'RE on espn, Fifteen thirty, Good.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
Afternoon dobby how Are you I'm doing i'm.
Speaker 10 (48:07):
Doing. GOOD mo i, couldn't help but notice. Your pain the.
Speaker 13 (48:11):
Whole thing BUT what i did see from, film work
when you got to One, like stuart that, pressure quarterback
that means that quarterback gotta get rid of that. Ball
immediately he ain't got all day to, be okay he's,
not open or he's, not OPEN or i go to
the third read that guy gonna put Pressure On. Lamar
(48:35):
Jackson When lamar jackson tried to roll to, the right
he's Gonna. Meet stuart and then if he trying to
spread about, the middle he's Gonna meet knight and that.
GUY harder i thought this was very hand Selected. By
al and believe it, Or not Al Signed howard Craft.
Speaker 10 (48:54):
From Nord to dame an unrestricted. Free agency he did
get a defensive type.
Speaker 13 (48:59):
Of one of his guys that played on that team
when he went to. The championship so people probably don't,
know that but THAT'S just, i know it's not.
Speaker 10 (49:08):
Breaking news some. People do BUT.
Speaker 13 (49:11):
What i did Think that al knew more than anything
that our linebackers has been tracked for a long time
man by through. Sideline tackles we just didn't have. No
speed and one of the things we, gotta admit dual
quarterback is a. Super thing, oh well let's, just say
back in my DAY when i, grew up we didn't see.
(49:32):
Dual quarterback but that's just what the quarterback position has.
Involved into and he got some linebackers that could definitely
get out. The quarterback shout Out to al for seeing.
HIS vision i think it's gonna. Come, true no he
didn't get everything, right away But Then, geno stone he
don't have to work. So hard, when YOU like, i
(49:53):
said you get that pressure on, that quarterback he got
to make up.
Speaker 10 (49:57):
His mind it MAKES your dB.
Speaker 2 (49:58):
Work, less mo well you Can, just well So The shamar,
Stewart Thing i'm i'm.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
With you now we have to.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
Acknowledge this quarterbacks IN the nfl are better at getting
out of trouble and getting rid of the football quickly
than college. Qbs are and so if one of the
issues in college was WELL the qb just got rid
of the, ball quickly well that's that's also going to
be an issue IN. The nfl but but you cannot
ignore the thirty. Nine PRESSURES and i think it is
(50:27):
a statistical anomaly that a player had thirty nine pressures
in college in only one and a. Half sack if
he has a similar amount of pressures IN, the nfl
the sacks. Will come and to, your point so will
the mistakes by the, opposing quarterback and so will the
sacks for some of. His teammates like if the physical,
traits translate and clearly he looks the part OF an,
(50:48):
nfl player all the, measurables right the physical traits translate
if you believe that the pressure, can translate, which is,
you know the ability to get past, your man get,
pastor blocker and apply pressure to the quarterback and make,
them escape make, them scramble make them make a. Hurried
throw if you believe that's, gonna translate he'll be an
asset to. THIS defense i have very very little issue
(51:13):
in not ignoring the sack and, a half but looking. Beyond,
it okay was he tied up by the opposing? Blocker
frequently he. Was not he just. Couldn't finish if he
applies pressure IN, the nfl he can, create turnovers he can,
create mistakes he can create sacks for. His teammates and
we're gonna like. The pick i'm with, You there but
(51:35):
if you're gonna tell me that the solution Nothing Against
howard cross So At.
Speaker 3 (51:39):
Notre dame.
Speaker 2 (51:39):
This year unfortunately didn't get a chance to show what
he can do because he faced double teams every. Single
game if if the idea is we're gonna fix defensive
tackle by signing a guy who went UNDRAFTED a, VI
man i don't know.
Speaker 3 (51:53):
About that that's a.
Speaker 13 (51:54):
Dicey proposition What About james harrison when he?
Speaker 10 (51:58):
Got cut maybe he got cut.
Speaker 2 (51:59):
Into, sure look there's there's all sorts of stories. Like
that there's all sorts of, you Know There's. Steve mongo
McMichael passed away, last week one of the great success
stories in the history of. The Draft And tim crumrae
was taking what in, round twelve he was at the draft.
This weekend there's all Sorts of there's all sorts of stories.
Like that undrafted free agents make. The team bengals had
(52:22):
one at linebacker. Last year But If howard cross is
added to a room of three technique players that also
includes a guy who was drafted and maybe one more
who was acquired in, free AGENCY that i think we're cool.
Speaker 3 (52:37):
With it If It's, HOWARD.
Speaker 2 (52:39):
Cross, tj slayton and the same dudes as, Last, year
frankly that feels kind.
Speaker 10 (52:44):
Of, underwhelming well let me ask you this one.
Speaker 13 (52:47):
Last question yeah you got you got two defensive tackles
that could eat. Up space and That boy NIGHT when
i tell, you more when he gets that, a.
Speaker 10 (52:58):
Gap this wats. The film he.
Speaker 13 (53:02):
Is relenting and see he got a grown man almost in.
A sense he really don't have, a young. Mighty guy
THAT'S why i like To pick knight because mature tan.
Awareen understanding but he would do two defensive type of
mod did that? A gap and You have night coming
through that he's Coming. Untouched mo we would talk about
(53:25):
this LATER because i think time would really show the
truth grade of, a draft.
Speaker 10 (53:30):
Not what we think what we do. Right now I'm not.
Speaker 13 (53:33):
Della's a, little bit just a, little bit you Know what,
i'm SAYING because i really want us to get that
running Back.
Speaker 10 (53:39):
From, arizona state and we didn't. GET it i. Do
box what's this how you say?
Speaker 13 (53:45):
His name, but Anyway the arizona RUNNING back i want
us to see Us Get.
Speaker 3 (53:53):
Cam scattabo is the running back that's let we.
Speaker 10 (53:56):
GO him i WAS really, I will, I.
Speaker 3 (53:59):
Will i will tell.
Speaker 2 (54:00):
YOU this i will tell you this from the standpoint
of BEING a uc Guy Watching taj brooks run. Against
him that guy can help Because THE bengals i think
needed somebody who between the tackles can get.
Speaker 3 (54:12):
Tough yardage he touched the ball more.
Speaker 2 (54:15):
Than a thousand Times the Texas At, texas tech so
there's a lot of wear and tear. On him he
doesn't have a great home run. Hitting ability he's not
gonna wow you with his. Breakaway speed but the guy
can run. People over the guy can get, tough YARDAGE
and i think they needed a back. Like that, so
Again like i'm open minded to all six of these
players being able.
Speaker 3 (54:34):
TO help i hope.
Speaker 2 (54:35):
They do but if you Watch the bengals, last year you, often,
thought man they need pass rush help over. The middle
they really didn't get it in, free agency and they
really didn't address it during the.
Speaker 3 (54:46):
Draft, EITHER dovie i love talk. To, YOU man i.
Gotta run. Thank you it's seventeen minutes after. Four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
You Know, KELSEY conway, i think was the only person
to Say the bengals Would Draft dylan.
Speaker 3 (54:56):

To be funny twenty two. Minutes after FOUR this is.
Espn fifteen thirty My. Name is mulwager thank you. For
listening Today breddimann of jones on baseball coming up in just.
About thirty minutes more of your phone calls are. Ahead as,
Well But first Kelsey Conway of the Inquirer joins us.
Cincinnati dot com she Joined. Us on wednesday we talked
(56:10):
about her three, round mock draft in which She Successfully
mocked dylan Fairchild to the bengals. In round three so
here to take a victory lap And. More is kelsey?
Speaker 3 (56:20):
HOW'S it going i.
Speaker 15 (56:22):
Most certainly am going to take. My victory, lap but hey?
WHAT is this i hear the fourth most listened.
Speaker 12 (56:28):
TO radio?
Speaker 2 (56:29):
Station, i disagree, Well another, publication CityBeat magazine they pulled
their readers as to the best Radio.
Speaker 3 (56:37):
Show in cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (56:38):
We finished fourth we finished FOURTH in since i don't it's.
Been three weeks we still haven't figured out if that's.
Speaker 3 (56:45):
Good or not you have no. Reaction, TO that.
Speaker 15 (56:53):
Oh i was about to talk while you were. ABOUT
to talk i think you're the. Best Radio show and
i'm not just Saying THAT on so i was shocked,
to HEAR that and i couldn't STOP laughing because i
thought it was like a joke.
Speaker 10 (57:05):
Of.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
Some Kind no city bet readers said we were the
fourth best Radio. Show in cincinnati now we're not sure
totally what to do with this Because They named dan
HORDE third best tv sportscaster and he HASN'T been a
tv sportscaster.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
In, Twenty, years.
Speaker 15 (57:20):
Okay well between, those two things between this being the
fourth ranked Radio Show and dan horde being third, ON
any list i beg you differ on both.
Speaker 3 (57:28):
Of those things are we are in agreement?
Speaker 2 (57:31):
On THAT one should i be focusing on The players
the bengals took or the positions.
Speaker 3 (57:36):
They didn't, ADDRESS.
Speaker 15 (57:39):
You know i find myself asking, That QUESTION too and
i think it's natural after the draft to focus more
on who they did draft as opposed to what. They
DIDN'T do but i think, in this case because they
covered so many needs, IN the draft i think you
should focus on what. THEY did do i know there's
(58:02):
a lot of talk about what they didn't, do at
dtackle what they didn't, do at safety BUT that's what
i kept going back to before the Draft is the
bengals weren't in a position necessarily to take the best
player available. At every round you can even argue did
they take the best Player available. In round one they
weren't like some other teams that could, just you know
(58:24):
load up at another position that they're already stacked at
because it's true that they can take the. BEST player
available i Think what the bengals did was they covered a,
lot of needs AND that's why i think the reaction
has kind of it hasn't been, an overwhelming excitement but
they checked a lot of boxes that they needed to
and they still have.
Speaker 3 (58:41):
More to check but did they? Need, to LINEBACKERS.
Speaker 15 (58:45):
Yes because i think that for the last two years
they have completely, neglected that Position and that, i've thought,
is you know one of the things that they could
have done better in the last two YEARS instead, of
i know you can't take care of every, position EVERY
year but i think that they turned like a blind
(59:09):
eye to the linebacker spot and They Didn't expect jermaine
pratt to regress like. Like he did nobody. Was EXPECTING
that so i see where they're coming. From THAT standpoint
but i just think whether it be like, the later
rounds they really haven't drafted that, position in years and that's.
What you get you end up having to DOUBLE up
Because I think al golden came in, and you know
(59:29):
he's a linebacker's. COACH at heart i think he came in, And,
was like yeah this needs to be fixed asap, because
his defense that's a really big part of. The front
seven he runs a Different deference than lou and the
linebacker spot's. Way MORE important and i think that we
didn't talk about how big of a, need IT was
but i think that they view if they can maybe,
(59:49):
fix the linebacker then they won't have as much to.
Worry about safety will, that worked out, we DON'T know
but i think that we really weren't talking about how
bad that linebacker room. Was last year.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
VERY very fair I Look at demetrius knight and for
all of his qualities and there, are in abundance both.
INTANGIBLE and tangible i can help but think that they
either a could have traded down and, still GOTTEN him
or b waited to address linebacker until a little bit
later on and gotten a player.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
Who was comparable Tell me. Why i'm wrong.
Speaker 15 (01:00:21):
You're fair on the trade. BACK for him. I don't
know it's hard to say if he would have been
there in, the THIRD round but i think that they
looked at as they had a third Round great on
dylan fairtrial, the whole TIME and so i think, that,
they thought well we know he's going to be there in,
the third round let's take the linebacker because we don't know.
Speaker 7 (01:00:44):
Who LIKED him and i.
Speaker 15 (01:00:45):
WILL tell you i was when they drafted linebacker on.
THE second round i was one of, the, people like
wait what they took a linebacker? In ROUND two because
i wanted them to take a dtackle, or another edge
like just go go bananas on the defensive line and
find only fixed it once. And FOR all but I
will say i reached out to a couple of sources
(01:01:06):
around the league who have studied the defensive side, of the,
ball the prospects and everyone said That, They LIKED night
so i think that they got a. Really good player
you can argue you should have been. In round two that's.
Up FOR debate but i talked to three different people
who all had watched his tape and they said he
was a.
Speaker 3 (01:01:26):
Really Good Player is dylan fairchild Going to? Start? WEEK
one yes.
Speaker 15 (01:01:33):
I it's funny I Was Asking, pitcher Dan pitcher the,
bengals offensive coordinator about the battle at, right GUARD now
and i didn't, even put in you know who could
battle at left Guard? With FAIR child like i just
automatically made him a starter. In my HEAD so when
i was asking about all the players who could be
(01:01:55):
battling on the other side, OF the ball i like
left the PRESS conference and, I was like i think
you guys just named him the starter without even realizing.
That he's starter but he's one to beat the?
Speaker 9 (01:02:06):
Start all?
Speaker 3 (01:02:07):
Right very good. That excites me.
Speaker 15 (01:02:11):
Is there anything, else he has like an awful?
Speaker 3 (01:02:13):
Camp, right sure yeah but they drafted.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Him to start but leading, up to it all you
heard was about all the competition they, had at GUARD
and so i think there are some, folks, who, wondered
like well is he just going to be added? To
that mix are they going to bring? Him around slowly
is it going to require an injury for him TO
be like i want. HIM to start i would imagine
they want him, to as well but they.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
Are, CROWDED there no i think that.
Speaker 15 (01:02:35):
MOVE was more i Remember Talking to zach taylor owner's
meetings about the guard spot and he, was basically alluding
let's get through the Draft and then i'll be able
to give you a better answer about. Where we're Doing
And for Dan Pitcher and zach taylor that night to
say he is going to be in the mix to,
start right away like they don't do that that, often
(01:02:56):
with players so they feel really. Good about, him with,
him you know basically he's going to have to, lose
the job let's. Just SAY that but i think where they're,
talking about competition it's going to be more at right
guard and what They Do with cody ford if they
make him The Starter or, lucas Patrick Does then cody
ford become. THE swing tackle i think right guard is
(01:03:17):
where the competition is, going to be and that's where
the like the real training camp battle is.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
Going to Be At the, shamar stewart pick everybody focuses
on one and, a half sacks and it's understandable why
there were. Thirty nine pressures there are. Great physical Traits
are the bengals telling us that sacks are overrated by
age rafting a guy who had one and a half
sacks and be not paying the league's current, Reigning, Sack champion.
Speaker 15 (01:03:45):
Well TREY hendricks and.
Speaker 5 (01:03:48):
I.
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
HAD to work i had to Work In a. Trey
hendrickson question that was my way. Of doing it.
Speaker 7 (01:03:54):
That's a.
Speaker 15 (01:03:54):
Whole DIFFERENT situation but i will Tell. YOU about schamar
i was out on him being a Pick for the
bengals because. OF the production i was one of the ones, that,
was like no they can't. Do this again they don't
have time. FOR a project i think it came down to.
THIS with him i think it came down to who
(01:04:16):
was available. At THE time so I Think had walter
nolan been there instead Of, going to arizona. TO pick
before i think they would have had a really long
debate About to Take Shamar. OR walter Nolan i think
nolan coming off the board. TO pick before i think
(01:04:38):
like their cluster. Was like dwindling And Who besides shamar
stewart was in their cluster we, won't EVER know but
i think that it was about they weren't they probably
it seems like they weren't really interested in any of
the other Edge Rushers like mike green Or the Boss,
(01:05:00):
college ed rusher and they weren't.
Speaker 10 (01:05:04):
As a.
Speaker 15 (01:05:04):
Roku they weren't it didn't seem like they wanted to
take a safety. At PICK seventeen so i think for
them it was about they, really liked him AND from
what i gather in obviously the production it has it has.
To Be better and i've asked a lot of people
(01:05:25):
like why if he's got all of, these crazy traits
like why hasn't? It COME together and i haven't been
able to get a, clear cut answer. Which is interesting
BUT from what i have gathered is he's way better
against the run than we're giving. Him credit for so
when you changed the, perspective of okay he might fill
(01:05:48):
More Of a sam hubbard type, role for them where he,
can you know be be really good, in the run he.
CAN bounce inside i think that takes the he needs
to have ten facts for this to be a sick
sets off. Of HIS plate but, i do, think you
know if this guy doesn't have four to five, sacks
every year it won't be looked at as. A GOOD
(01:06:08):
pick but, i, WILL say like i think it was.
About for them he was part of their grouping that they,
were comfortable taking and some people came off the board
before they, Probably EXPECTED that and i think it was
about about we really like this guy and we think
that seventeen is. Acceptable FOR him and, i, WILL say
(01:06:30):
like i read so many mock drafts and there wasn't
one where he wasn't in. The FIRST round so i
think that it's not like it's a bad Pick that
the bengals took that someone who had a third, third
round grade YOU know?
Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
What, i, Mean SURE yeah and I understand That I
like TODs. BROOKS mm hmm i liked that pick.
Speaker 15 (01:06:48):
A lot TOO i think i think it'll be interesting
to see how he is able to come on like halfway.
THROUGH the season i Think He compliments chase, brown Really
Well and chase brown showed that he can be when
on the field of. Super DYNAMIC back but i love
(01:07:10):
that they added a complimentary, piece TO him and i
wrote in my, WRAP up piece i actually thought the
pick that made a lot of sense to Me Was
the barrett carter pick and the fourth Round linebacker, on
day three because if you, look at it and we
don't really talk about, It That often logan wilson's injury
(01:07:30):
history has definitely been something you know that's. Crippled this
defense he struggled to stay on the. Field AT times
and i, think this guy from everything you read about
him is he's a, green DOT linebacker and i think
that he's going to end up playing a lot more
than we're probably talking.
Speaker 2 (01:07:48):
About right now awesome, stuff as always and. We thank
you we'll talk. To you soon thank, You so.

How you.
Speaker 3 (01:10:53):
Doing i'm good what's? Nice To you.
Speaker 8 (01:10:56):
BUT i'm wondering i just wanted to get some stuff off.
Speaker 16 (01:10:58):
On chest chapter, so you Know the whole, bengals off
season and everybody's been having so much. Stuff to say
versus wasn't gonna sign. The wire receivers then we were signing.
The wide receivers people. Complained about that then you know
they addressed to these, of the linebackers which. We Already
know jermaine pratt property is not gonna be. On the
team so you get a tackling Machine, from the eagles
(01:11:18):
you get another tackling machine out. Of the draft both
of the linebackers are very. HUMBLE and hungry i believe
we've been actually building this defense the last three years
because if, you pay attention we actually drafted our, safeties other.
Speaker 7 (01:11:30):
Futures but we didn't put them in a position like
they were.
Speaker 16 (01:11:32):
Supposed to be then with the injuries that, we donet
have and then on, top of that we drafted our cornerbacks,
for the future and then once again. We had injuries
if you look, at the layout we, got YOUNG. Cornerbacks
young Dv we got thatcheran set in Each, PLACE. With,
genostone vj hill And Of. Course trey henderson then on
(01:11:53):
top of that are number one draft picked. The seventeenth
overall if You Listen to loop keeping and the lady
that used To Be On, good morning football Las, they
yet chaotams they both have came out and said that
not only he was the best the end coming, out
of college but people are going to regret saying the
(01:12:15):
comments that they had because he's going to turn out
to be the best the end they came out of.
College this year so if you, think about it if
he's getting The Pressures and trey henderson is finishing, up
the sack just say if he, Can't Finish sack trey
henderson started finishing up these sacks where he teaches this
rookie and where he can learn how, to finish sacks
(01:12:36):
Which We know trey henderson is. Very good at then
not only you got explosive ends, On both Ends You've
got cam semple that was coming in at the end
of the year once he. Started getting Healthy joseph and
dad was coming on at the end. Of the year
once he, Started getting healthy both of them start coming
in at the end of the year. MAKING the least
i believe they both got five sacks or. More at
peace so if you actually counter that all in and
(01:12:58):
then you're thinking about you Getetting Rid, of mike Hilton
you slide newton, into that spot then you got you're
already to prove in cornerbacks, on each side because let's
Not forget cam brick was playing pro bow leg levels
the year before and then He Decreased. Under LOU arou
and i Believe That. With lou emeru you got to
understand he never. Plays his rookies so if we would
(01:13:21):
have played these guys from, the very beginning who's to
say what they had be in year two?
Speaker 8 (01:13:25):
And year three And When what al, golden is doing.
Speaker 16 (01:13:27):
Not only he's building, a young defense but he's building
the defense that's gonna be able to jail together for.
Speaker 8 (01:13:32):
Years, to come man that Ain't Even.
Speaker 16 (01:13:34):
Just al golden that's been the process for the, last
three YEARS because, like i said we done got. Safeties
one year cornerbacks of the last. Couple of years you got,
DT's last year you got, linebackers this year and you
got a defensive end to go on the Other Side
of trey henderson with the two defensive ends you already
have drafted. That had injuries so if you take, the
(01:13:55):
injuries out who's to say what this. Team's gonna be i'm,
Gonna tell you i'm. A predicted white now we're gonna
have a, top ten defense we don't have a, top
five offense and we're gonna go back To. The super
bowl back in, twenty TWENTY one when i told you
we was going To, the super bowl you laughed at,
me and said, let's be optimistic and then what?
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
END up happening I, LAUGHED at yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
I remember that i remember, laughing at you, and then,
Yeah all right so you've you've outlined everything in a.
Very logical way and, By the way i'm Gonna Play
that luke keigley audio as soon AS you and i
are done talking with Him. And K adam so i'm
glad you teed that up, because IT'S important and i
am WITH you That I believe shamar stewart can be
an asset to this defense if if the skill set
(01:14:36):
of pressuring the quarterback TRANSLATES, to the NFL which which i.
Believe it can but you are putting, For, this season
jarvis you are putting a lot of faith in a
group of dbs that. COLLECTIVELY are unproven i think you. Would,
admit that look what they're. Doing is Obvious They think
al golden can get more out of That Bunch than.
Lou aromo could and and, If It works al golden's
(01:14:58):
gonna get a, ton of credit And So. Is duke
tobin it just relative to what we watched last season
what they have done, to the defense, while maybe productive
two linebackers that. Can Maybe help Shamar Stewart or in
burke's was AWESOME In the nfc championship Game In, the SUPER.
Speaker 1 (01:15:16):
BOWL.
Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
And j t slayton was a Part Of a green
bay front that was awesome against the. Run last year
but relative to the things that we saw plague this,
team last season which was lack of pass rush up
the middle and at times, poor safety play it is
glaring and noteworthy that they have not really addressed either of.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
Those Two areas.
Speaker 16 (01:15:39):
Jordan battle was actually one of the best rookie, safeties
that year and then the, next, year that y'all we.
Speaker 8 (01:15:45):
Didn't even play sure we got We went Got old.
Speaker 16 (01:15:48):
Von beale and brom him back and clearly he's.
Speaker 8 (01:15:50):
Not to ask i'm telling you is have you let.
These boys.
Speaker 16 (01:15:54):
Play that's heal you, got four corners solid corners that,
know the system gonna learn a new system where they're gonna.
Speaker 7 (01:16:01):
Be put in play to do what they need.
Speaker 16 (01:16:03):
To do best you already got a Strong Safety in
jordan battles that. YOU stopped playing i. Don't know why
Then You got geno stones on, the other side so
you got you. Got experiencing youth you got experiencing youth
in every department because Right now cam britt is your
number one cornerback and he's the. Most experienced one then
you move on down. To the dts you drafted two.
(01:16:24):
DT's last year let's Not forget That chris ja day.
Speaker 8 (01:16:29):
Was hurt too they.
Speaker 16 (01:16:30):
Was hurt too so if everybody, can Be healthy and
i'm telling, you, this now man we're gonna be a.
Top ten defense we're gonna be a, top five offense
and we're going Back To the super.
Speaker 2 (01:16:40):
Bowl hands down i'm not laughing at, You, this time
jarvis but we're gonna save the tape. And revisit this
hopefully we hear a few from. You before then thank
you very much for. The phone, call yees, Sir all
right jarvis TS something that i want to play here
before we Did Run niman in jones on baseball because.

The former carolina anther and Obviously say next Star Along,
(01:17:01):
with kay adams friend, Of The show kay adams GOING
backways on i guess.
Speaker 3 (01:17:07):
This Is ON. Fan duel, tv all right let's. Play
it Now here's A kay And Luke, On Shamar, STEWART.
Speaker 14 (01:17:17):
Mark stewart i was talking about him to start the,
show AS well so. I we're asked sorry all the other,
thirty two teams we decided to focus on all the.
Same ones Today, but the bengals they take, him seventeenth
overall Speaking of physical he's got, all the talent, all
the skills all, the traits right and not a. Lot
of production that Was. The question MARK that's why i
think he's such a great value to any team. He
went through he Goes, to, the bengals though and that's
(01:17:38):
the team that needs to. Win right now that is
a team that does not have. Time, TO develop okay
i would love to know, from YOUR perspective and i
looked it.
Speaker 5 (01:17:46):
Up this morning my.
Speaker 14 (01:17:48):
Producers did that it seems like it'll be the same
sort of defense that they ran Last, year in cincinnati though.
They changed gcs what kind of an impact will he have?
Speaker 17 (01:17:58):
In this?
Speaker 9 (01:17:58):
Scheme RIGHT away what i think what he gives.
Speaker 1 (01:18:01):
You is he gives you flexibility to play.
Speaker 17 (01:18:03):
Inside and outside he's, got the size, in the length
and the athletic ability in a four down front to
play like that true defensive end in the sea gap or.
Outside the tackle he gives you that he's got plenty
of ability. To do that but what he also does
is when they when they switch over and they play
more of a, three down front more of a, three
to four he, can slide inside play over the top,
(01:18:24):
of a tackle outside edge, of the tackle and be
physical because he, Has great length. He's got, explosiveness you
know he's two hundred. And seventy pounds some people might
say he's a little bit undersized, to be there but
what he has that's. Unique is explosiveility so if he's
just gonna sit there and. Take on tackles he's able.
To do that but what he is able to do,
(01:18:46):
is that, twitchiness that length the ability to get vertical.
And shoot gaps it gives him great ability to line.
Them up outside great.
Speaker 14 (01:18:53):
Can he be outside of all these there are all
these questions about him stacking him up against the other
guys in, this draft class how good?
Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
CAN he be i think.
Speaker 17 (01:18:59):
He's his ceiling for ed rushers as a, TRUE defensive
end i think is the best. IN the draft i
kind of Exclude a dual carter because he's more of
a stand. Up OUTSIDE backer But i think schamar's ceiling
out of anybody in the draft is the highest because at, raw, athletic, ability.
Physicality length explosiveness if they can, figure that out he's
(01:19:21):
going to be a.
Speaker 1 (01:19:21):
Really Good player.
Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
Louk Keighley with Kay Adams ON.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):

Ice cold, MICHELOA ultra, Tell, Him i Said hi. Reds
and cardinals. Tonight first of four we've been putting a
bow on the draft today and frankly we're not going
to be. Done Doing that today paul danner's going. To
Join us tomorrow joe goodbarry later in the week others to.
Get to as well let me, let me start here
let me Start This. HOUR on shamar stewart i will
(01:20:59):
admit To you that on FRIDAY on this show i
said the First Round pick of, shamar STEWART was underwhelming
and i think to a. Degree that still applies. At the,
SAME time number one i think no matter who, they
picked at seventeen you could have talked about a missing
(01:21:22):
trait or a, box not being checked or a concern no.
Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
Matter who It Was let's say.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
Walter, Nolan Was, there well walter nolan everybody before the
draft was wondering does? He really like football we would be. Talking,
about that today god did they just draft a guy
who maybe doesn't have the kind of. Ticker you're looking
for or if They Took a player donovan azarak Who Has,
been mentioned boston, college lots of production questions about his,
size and his twitch, that sort of stuff we would.
(01:21:52):
Be focusing on those or if you went to a
smaller school didn't. Play high end competition there was always
a strong possibility and maybe an inevitability that no matter
who they took with, the seventeenth overall pick there was
gonna be something. Negative that stood out maybe that's not
(01:22:14):
the most fair way to look at. Some of these
guys maybe It, is with schamar stewart it's one. And
a half sacks. You cannot ignore it you cannot ignore
one and a half sacks last year and four and a.
Half over three seasons you were also gonna look at
it from the standpoint of the position, that he doesn't
play because this team has a billion team needs and,
(01:22:38):
with every subsequent pick we've done that and.
Speaker 3 (01:22:41):
We WILL continue to but i spent the weekend thinking.
Speaker 2 (01:22:46):
About Thirty nine pressures schamar Stewart LAST year AT texas
a and m. Had thirty nine pressures how does that
translate to putting a lot of pressure on the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:22:57):
AT the next.
Speaker 2 (01:22:58):
Level i don't know quarterbacks at the next level are
better at getting rid. Of the football quickly offensive linemen
at the next level are more difficult to get. Around
and get through but you always look at what a,
player does in college and, when you pick them you
assume that this skill set or this thing they do
(01:23:21):
translates well to the next level with an abundance, of
elite physical traits and this one thing, THAT he does
well i might. BE in the minority i am not
giving up on this dude being an. Asset to this
defense maybe, he doesn't, give them you know like. Legitimate,
(01:23:43):
first round production unfortunately this wasn't. A great draft class
so maybe you could say that about a lot of
guys who were taken in the first round that might
have gone later in the draft.
Speaker 3 (01:23:53):
In a different year but, the thirty nine sack the
thirty nine.
Speaker 2 (01:23:56):
Pressures Are not nothing if shamarsh is good, at pressuring
the quarterback there's a lot of really cool. Things that
can happen one of his teammates might. Stumble into a
sack the opposing quarterback might, throw the ball away maybe,
on a third down where now the plant. Unit's gonna
come out maybe it, happens on fourth Down where now
(01:24:18):
the bengals. Offense gets the ball the, quarterback didn't get
sacked but you got the outcome.
Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
You Were looking for.
Speaker 2 (01:24:23):
The bengals gotta stop maybe there's pressure and a quarterback
makes a bad decision, And throws a pick and in
that case you would argue that.
Speaker 3 (01:24:32):
Better, Than A sack right so. I think it's.
Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
Fair i think it's certainly fair to dwell on, maybe
not dwell on but talk about one, and a half
sacks and maybe. They're being issues finishing maybe they're being
issues with.
Speaker 3 (01:24:48):
Just not being quick enough or strong enough. To finish.
THE play.
Speaker 2 (01:24:53):
But pressures i do not, recall WHO said this because
i was looking at Social media on on saturday and
doing like. A THOUSAND different things but i SAW a
tweet and i didn't click on the video because again.
That's stuff going on but the quote from the video.
Was pressures are. Disruptions disruptions are. Production Disruptions are production
(01:25:20):
so i'm he can't have a second and a half
next year and make anybody feel like he had. A
Quality rookie season but i'm NOT gonna be and i
don't think we should be too. Quick to dismiss pressures
pressures and what the impact of, those pressures can do
(01:25:44):
what benefits the defense can enjoy based on having a
guy who is really GOOD.
Speaker 3 (01:25:50):
At PRESSURING the qb.
Speaker 2 (01:25:53):
So i think that part has To Be, acknowledged WITH
shamar stewart and i feel like a LOT of his
and i might have been.
Speaker 3 (01:25:59):
AS guilty is.
Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
ANYBODY i don't know i feel like a lot of
us solely focused on the one. AND a half sacks
i was on a Podcast Last Night, With Paul danner
Junior Jay morrison And. Charlie goldsmith the growler you should,
go Listen to, it and jay said and he may
have DONE this today and, i haven't seen it but
he was gonna look into the thirty nine pressures and
like see.
Speaker 3 (01:26:20):
What the context was sometimes.
Speaker 2 (01:26:21):
That applies to Sacks remember When The, Bengals Got trey hendrickson.
Tony pike did this he went and looked at all
Of His sacks in new orleans to, try, to figure
out like is this just a guy who's picking up
a Bunch of cheap sacks like. It's third and fourteen
they're obviously passing and so it's a little bit easier
TO get to the qb or how many of them
were coverage sacks or how many. Of them were sacks
(01:26:44):
you know that we're sort of. CAUSED by pressure, Elsewhere
i don't know jay. Will do the homework we'll get
you on. To talk about it, but, DISRUPTIONS do, matter
man i mean disruptions can cause havoc and can create
things that help your defense and make your team's chances of.
Winning All that better so i'm gonna be glass half
(01:27:07):
full When It. COMES to shamar stewart i think there
were also two ways to. Look at this class one
way is to just focus on. The players they acquired
we got To Call, her LAST hour jarvis who i think.
Clock did pretty good Like for years the bengals have
been criticized for. Sort, of ignoring linebacker well now they
(01:27:29):
added one In Free. Agency and orn burkes they've Got
A guy in logan wilson who's been a good, pro
for a while and they just went and got.
Speaker 3 (01:27:36):
To in the draft neither guy looks.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
Like Necessarily a project barrett carter might be, a little
bit undersized. But he's certainly fast there's like genuine. Sideline
to Sideline Pursuitability and with demetrius knight a little bit,
of a late bloomer off the charts in terms of
maturity and can run downhill phil HOLES and the Evaluation
(01:28:01):
I read from dan brugler spoke to his ability to blitz.
Coming up the middle we'll see THOSE might, Be quality
Nfl Players and maybe dylan. FAIRCHILD is As Well i asked,
kelsey conway last hour is he going to?
Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
Be the starting guard it feels like he is And the.
Speaker 2 (01:28:18):
Way the bengals are if they're ever going to build,
an elead offensive line it's going to, happen through The
Draft starting with amarius MEM's last year and now hopefully
continuing with one, of his Former Teammates. And so dylan
fairchild there's. A LOT to like AND i mentioned Before
I really like taj brooks six round Pick Running. Back
from texas tech, great, between the tackles runner a lot of.
(01:28:41):
Tread on his tires don't think he's going to be
asked to, be A workhorse here but i. Think satisfies in,
need like you can you could look at the attributes
of every player.
Speaker 3 (01:28:50):
And figure out, ways, that they help right.
Speaker 2 (01:28:53):
You could do it with every, single one of them every.
Single one of them there is a a part of
Me That. Looked at jalen rivers the Tackle they got
from miami is a little bit, of a luxury pick
but it was talked often in the weeks leading up
to the draft about how they had a definitive need. For,
a Swing Tackle well maybe jalen. Rivers helps with that.
Speaker 3 (01:29:16):
So that's one way.
Speaker 2 (01:29:17):
Of looking at it. Just evaluate the players another way
to look at. IT is the process, I think you
know rapine talked about. THIS with Us Before i think
demetrius knight could have been had had they. Waited a
few picks i'm, not talking about, rounds talking about like
had they waited a few picks and added. To their
draft class now that's, easier said than done but it
is for me at least one. Of the what ifs could,
(01:29:38):
they have traded down added draft Capital And. Still gotten
demetrius knight it was A Long time between demetrius knight
coming off the board and the next linebacker. COMING off
the board a whole bunch of them. Went IN round
four so i can't help but wonder in a draft
where they had, a lot of needs couldn't they have
added a pick and still gotten a guy. That they
(01:30:01):
clearly wanted so that's one, way to do it and
it's also fair to look at. What they, HAVEN'T addressed
you know i brought. This Up last hour the bengals
were not uber. Aggressive in free agency last. Year's defense
was terrible last year's defense is the Main reason why
the bengals did not make. The postseason last year last
(01:30:24):
YEAR'S defense ruined an Mvp Caliber. Season from joe burrow
if you Just started following the bengals this offseason what they've.
Done to the defense would you know that last? Year's,
DEFENSE was atrocious no i think you would think it
was actually.
Speaker 3 (01:30:42):
Pretty decent last year.
Speaker 2 (01:30:45):
So you look at the the. Offseason as a whole free,
agency Comes and goes and i'm not Opposed To bringing
back joseph osai, in a.
Speaker 10 (01:30:54):
ONE.
Speaker 2 (01:30:54):
Year, PROVED contract tj slayton, i mentioned this before was
part Of A very good green bay front last year.
Year Against the run orn burks was awesome late last
season In the role the eagles. Asked HIM to play
but i was here for the SEASON last year and
i remember number, one watching the defense but also listening
to people, talk about the defense wondering can they really
(01:31:16):
get by without? Addressing, interior pass rush well. They haven't
addressed it can they really get BY with The Same
i know von bell's not going, to be here anymore
but Running It back with Geno Stone and giving, jordan
battle a chance can they really run it?
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
Back?
Speaker 2 (01:31:30):
With these Dbs well they have and so the draft
is the next. Part of the, offseason after free agency
there are still. Free agents out. There free agency starts
free agency goes through, a couple Of waves and the
bengals don't, find interior pass rush they don't Add to
their secondary and what a lot of, us were told
(01:31:51):
was well they could still do. It during the draft
well they didn't do. It during the draft the question
is do You believe is the bengal clearly do that
they're good, with what they have which is, mostly last
year's defense. MOSTLY last year's.
Speaker 3 (01:32:07):
Defense.
Speaker 2 (01:32:09):
I don't know man like they they clearly have A
High opinion of al golden and they clearly have a
high opinion of a lot of guys who. Were here
last year if their opinion, proves to be right this
team's got a shot to. Win the whole thing if
their opinion proves. To not be right some pretty serious.
(01:32:31):
Ramifications for this franchise seventeen minutes after, five, o'clock, five, one,
three seven Four nine fifteen thirty your phone. Calls are
coming UP plus two things i meant to get to last.

now we'll spend, some time, On that and uh, walt jockety,
passed away and uh that made me think of something
that has always.
Speaker 3 (01:33:02):

Different sort of grading they ranked all the teams, one

Now i'm just kidding he did. Not fake the injury
but he's. QUITE a little competitor i got to. Hand
that to. Him he really is and that uh hounds
is when he, MADE that three pointer i. Fell off
the chair that.
Speaker 2 (01:38:15):

Speaker 3 (01:38:35):

Speaker 12 (01:38:39):
YOU know that right i just. WON'T do that anymore.
I won't.
Speaker 2 (01:38:42):
Do that i'm sorry there was a bad non call
at the. End of the game i'm not. In CHARGE
of that? Should i feel bad like what what when
when someone when someone's team wins the game and they
they they benefited from.
Speaker 3 (01:38:54):
A bad non call what is a? Fan supposed? To DO.
Speaker 12 (01:38:59):
Be happy so i got a lot of.
Speaker 2 (01:39:01):
This, On social media yesterday like you can't? Be, Happy about, that,
KEN you're, like, yeah i, can yeah m yes my team. Won,
A playoff game yes i can. Be Happy about it
and i'm asking now, the audience at large like if
if a, team wins a game, and by the way
there were lots of questionable, calls in that game they
(01:39:21):
have let them. Play in this series detroit was very complicit,
in their own demise all the unforced turnovers. In The
fourth quarter ky cunningham is in a wide open, Shot
from fifteen out, Like By the way josh hart got,
fouled under the basket. Like a, Lot lot but fine
i'm Willing to admit the knicks. Got away WITH? One
what am i what is a fan of a team
(01:39:42):
that benefits from a bad caller non?
Speaker 3 (01:39:44):
Call supposed to do.
Speaker 16 (01:39:47):
Enjoy?
Speaker 2 (01:39:47):
It and go on so like you, and many others
yesterday what do? You, want, from me like yeah there
was a bad call that it.
Speaker 3 (01:39:55):
Went MY? Team's way am i what are we? SUPPOSED
to do, Here.
Speaker 12 (01:40:02):
I, DON'T know you're right i just, shouldn't BRING it.
UP so I won't I Won't If.
Speaker 2 (01:40:06):
The los angeles dodgers, if, IF If show hey o
tani walks on what is at an, abundantly clear third
strike but they call it a ball and he walks in.
Speaker 3 (01:40:17):
The pennant winning Run are you gonna are you gonna? Feel?
HAPPY about that.
Speaker 12 (01:40:22):
Yeah i, mean It'll be tainted, but i'll.
Speaker 16 (01:40:24):
Be happy?
Speaker 1 (01:40:24):
Not tainted.
Speaker 3 (01:40:25):
How's it it's tainted if, a rule. Is broken it's tainted,
if a.
Speaker 2 (01:40:28):
Team cheats it's tainted if a team does something that
it's not supposed to and they, get away with it.
Winning something on it one is The Nineteen Eighty Five
Kansas city royals? World, Series title tainted.
Speaker 12 (01:40:42):
No just, In my, Own, LIND i'm, THINKING hey i
wish i wish it would. Have, been a legit sure in.
Speaker 2 (01:40:48):
An ideal sporting event there, are no bad calls but
we don't. Have ideal, sporting events they're imperfect which is.
What makes, THEM great and again i could yell and
scream on any number of occasions about times where MY
team didn't get i DON'T do that because i understand
sometimes your team wins when you benefit.
Speaker 3 (01:41:09):
From, THE bad call mike i just used this to.
GET off my chest. I hope you're?
Speaker 12 (01:41:12):
Good, WHAT'S GOING on well i i basically, have no
life anymore so that's my other.
Speaker 10 (01:41:17):
Reason for doing.
Speaker 12 (01:41:18):
SOUP so that's true i was just. WITH the DRAFT yesterday.
I just i was i. WAS disappointed in GENERAL i
not that i have, a lot of expertise but just
looking at, what the needs. WERE who they took i
thought it was ironic because it seemed like several times
they WENT to commercial where I didn't. WATCH the abc
(01:41:39):
SIDE i. Watched, the espn side yeah and it seemed
like they went to commercial quite A bit when the
bengals Were getting ready to.
Speaker 10 (01:41:45):
IT made me Mad.
Speaker 2 (01:41:46):
I think ON saturday i Think. I THINK on saturday
and i could be WRONG about this because i. WAS
watching multiple things i think that happened On. Consecutive, PICKS on.
Speaker 11 (01:41:53):
Saturday oh i, was waiting her breath was That's my
hometown teament and they're in a commercial and then they
come back.
Speaker 10 (01:42:05):
And they still don't even.
Speaker 12 (01:42:06):
Say, ANYTHING ABOUT.
Speaker 2 (01:42:07):
It yeah I i, thought, They I thought uh AND
i watched the espn coverage MUCH more than. THE nfl
network coverage i think they do a good enough job
of talking about every team while at the same time
focusing on the storylines that matter the most to the.
Most amount of people and THERE was criticisms that espn
(01:42:29):
was spending Too Much time On shador Sanders, on friday
and saturday but, that was the story that was the
story that the most amount, of people CARED about and
so i understand why, that took, priority over you. Know
AN individual team BUT i think THAT'S i think it's
i think they actually do a really good. Job covering
the draft nobody ever credits broadcasters, with how they do but,
(01:42:52):
they all seemed very very Underwhelmed by, what the bengals
did and that consensus has continued through the folks Who.
Speaker 3 (01:42:58):
WRITE about, THE.
Speaker 12 (01:42:59):
Draft I Thought, i loved LEWIS riddick And Then i
loved mel kuiper's guttural reaction to his His his faith
in shadoor because he.
Speaker 7 (01:43:10):
Was legit bummed.
Speaker 8 (01:43:11):
Out, You saw it yeah i've never seen.
Speaker 10 (01:43:14):
No, lact like that.
Speaker 2 (01:43:15):
Uh HE was, CRESTFALLEN but I Thought i Thought, rhys
davis on Saturday, who anchored the draft he came to
THAT debate prepared and i thought. It was Good Television,
him and Lewis riddick and mel kiper Discussing.
Speaker 3 (01:43:31):
What, HAPPENED to shador.
Speaker 12 (01:43:33):
Yeah I thought it was i. Thought it was riveting
it was the best. Part of, the drift you're right
even if people don't. WANT to hear it i don't
know what the problem was. BECAUSE everybody WAS shocked i
mean i was. SHOCKED more than you i.
Speaker 3 (01:43:44):
Was not surprised he did not get.
Speaker 2 (01:43:46):
DRAFTED in round one i was very surprised when The
draft Moved from friday to saturday that he. Was off
the board, and then you know when the fourth round Came,
and went on saturday, you, started, to think like okay
is he actually. Going to get drafted you couldn't help.
But entertain That Possibility.
Speaker 11 (01:44:07):
But.
Speaker 3 (01:44:07):
Like i'm i'm rooting it's.
Speaker 2 (01:44:10):
Hard because he's A brown and the browns have the
weirdest quarterback room now Of All, Time Between, Kenny Pickett
joe flacco deshaun watson, Is Still, under Contract Dylan. Gabriel
and shador sanders the only way the story gets more
interesting From Here is if shador sanders turns out to
be a. Really good pro player now he's gonna have
to earn that chance and he's got to do it in.
(01:44:32):
This weird quarterback room but if if he flames out
or doesn't earn a, chance or gets cut like the,
story KIND of ends although i certainly think another team will.
Give him a shot but the story takes a different
turn if he turns out to be a really GOOD
pro player and. I root for interesting so there is,
a part of me though He, plays for the browns
(01:44:54):
that wants him to turn out to. Be a good
quarterback also like if if what what happened to him
is a reflection of a lot of teams thinking, He,
NEEDS some humility well i think it'd be neat if
he took that slice of humble pie ate it and
then ended up exhibiting the characteristics that many teams were
(01:45:15):
looking FOR.
Speaker 3 (01:45:16):
As, A pro, qb.
Speaker 12 (01:45:18):
Yeah i agree and that could very well be a
growing step for him and help him more than anything
could have even if he had been, a FIRST round
pick because i find. The family's got money it's not
like the kids that have been hurting. For money real quick,
if you, don't mind once again my three favorite gms.
Rise to the top how YOU other and says i
don't Care about that, labor i'm taking him like, YOU
(01:45:38):
said last year I Don't Care about jalen carrett carter's.
Credit or. A character i'm taking then. Last Snead comes
up the rams. Make that brilliant. Move twenty sixth, Pick, Here,
you go Atlanta, god you want. Piers you got him
now we've got your tenth or eleventh or twelve pick
right next year because you're probably not going, to do
that well so we can get a draft. Rich Quarterback
in here then Jason light, down, at, tampus, says no
(01:46:02):
no no we're not going to take an egg rushing. Like,
everybody told me well we're going to take one of
The best receivers that these are the guys that willing.
Speaker 10 (01:46:08):
Rise, TO the.
Speaker 2 (01:46:09):
Top Yeah i mean tampa, bay, BOLSTERED to strength right
i MEAN they they, they i, Don't know you know buka.
Is a terrific player they bolstered what was already a
strength and didn't address what a lot of people said
they had to as as a weakness.
Speaker 3 (01:46:27):
There AT nineteen overall and i think it.
Speaker 2 (01:46:29):
WOULD have been interesting i think they're a team that
would Have Been interesting if shamar stewart would have been
on the board.
Speaker 3 (01:46:32):
For, them at nineteen mike thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:46:35):
FOR taking my Ribbing i hope your PISTONS lose tomorrow

LIKE admit it okay i hain't nothing. To do with
it i'd have. Called a foul there what if your

games On. The west, end of cincinnati thank you at
least until it gets to be. LIKE ninety five DEGREES
Out i don't think fc, cincinnati controls that at, all
but like day games. Especially This Time of, year before
tonight's reds game a moment of Silence Will, be Observed
for walt jockety the red's former general manager, and president
(01:52:03):
of baseball operations passed away at the age of. Seventy
four over the weekend And When, you think of walt
jockety primarily you think Of His Time, with the saint
louis cardinals where he Was The architect of a world
series winning team. In two thousand and, SIX and, so
it's appropriate i guess not that they, wouldn't be doing
this anyway but It is appropriate that The Reds Are.
Playing The saint louis cardinals walt jockety. Was a very
(01:52:29):
nice man it was somebody that we had the opportunity
to have on the. Show A bunch of times but
i remember distinctly three different in studio visits where we
would basically sit and talk. Baseball for forty five, minutes
and he was awesome and he had A sense of
humor because i love talking with people in that role
about what, little time you have?
Speaker 3 (01:52:48):
Off what do.
Speaker 2 (01:52:48):
You do and he was he was awesome and very
accommodating and very friendly. And had a, GREAT career, AND
you know i remember I remember when when the reds
hired him and then Elevated Him because they had wayne
krivsky as their general manager and he was in that capacity.
Speaker 3 (01:53:09):
And they removed him From.
Speaker 2 (01:53:11):
It an elevated wall jockety that was a really big
deal because here you had this guy that had built
So Many Of those awesome saint louis, cardinals teams that
you know basically spent all of The Two Thousands Running
the national league central and.
Speaker 3 (01:53:27):
That was a big.
Speaker 2 (01:53:28):
Deal and While there were times where walt deserved criticism
for maybe not making a certain move at, the deadline
like twenty thirteen or maybe even, to a degree twenty
twelve or kind of standing pat in the off season between.
Twenty ten to twenty eleven at, the end of the
day he did put the finishing touches on a team
that went to, the playoffs in Twenty ten which was
(01:53:50):
the reds first division, winner since nineteen ninety five first playoff,
team since nineteen ninety five and oversaw the the ascension
of a lot of players who came through their system
and then added to them with Outside acquisitions that helped
the reds in, twenty ten win the division helped him
(01:54:13):
again win. The Division in Twenty twelve paul doherty, of
cincinna dot com today it writes of a number of
players who during that time, the acquired his substack newsletter
there's me not thinking but rights of a number of
players who had A positive impact on, the reds during
That Time like A World as Chapman In, Mike League,
And Ramon hernandez Shinsu Chu, matt lato's acquiring, scott rowland
(01:54:38):
like some really really really good acquisitions that helped that
core of guys that were homegrown achieve at. Least Some
Level of success so walt chocketty Is A significant, figure
in Reds Baseball history. Certainly RECENT reds baseball history and i.
Said this over the weekend.
Speaker 5 (01:55:00):
One.
Speaker 2 (01:55:00):
Of THE more remarkable things and i know we're kind of.
Diving into the weeds here one of the More Remarkable
things About the baseball hall of fame has been how
historically it has not really opened.
Speaker 3 (01:55:14):
The doors To General managers In.
Speaker 2 (01:55:18):
The baseball hall of fame think of the long and,
illustrious history of this sport there have been just six
men honored for doing the work of modern. Team president
or general manager i'm READING from myself here because i
wrote this A Few, years AGO for The Athletic, because
i think bob Housen The Architect, of the Big red
(01:55:40):
Machine is the hall.
Speaker 3 (01:55:42):
Of fame's. Most egregious Omission it's Absurd but the hall
of fame is.
Speaker 2 (01:55:48):
Not Kind To, general managers so john Schuerholtz who built
those great braves teams in the, nineties and early two thousands.
Was Elected in twenty seventeen pat, gillick Went in twenty
eleven built division winning teams for four Different Franchises.
Speaker 3 (01:56:04):
And won three, world series.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Prior to that you had to go back THIRTY three
years before a gm, Was inducted. Nineteen Seventy eight Larry
McPhail the hall of fame is, very CLOSED to general
managers And I don't know Why Walt Jockety was.
Speaker 3 (01:56:22):
The Sporting news executive.
Speaker 2 (01:56:23):
Of the year three times his Fingerprints all over those
great oakland teams of the, late eighties and early nineties
Including One that won the world, series in NINETEEN eighty
Nine Was the gm in saint louis during a run
in Which They went to the world series in four to.
One on and oh seven his fingerprints all over the
twenty eleven team, That Won the whole thing albert polholes certainly,
(01:56:46):
a feather in, his cap so to Speak and then
Won the executive Of the year award in Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (01:56:51):
And helped build three reds teams. That went to the
playoffs that is a, by.
Speaker 2 (01:56:56):
Just an, objective estimation you would go that's that's a,
career that should be celebrated and he should be included
among the all.
Speaker 3 (01:57:05):
Time best at that job except what is.
Speaker 2 (01:57:09):
Remarkable to Me is the hall of, fame doesn't celebrate
that job which.
Speaker 3 (01:57:14):
Is Essential To the Sport And walt chockety and bob.
Speaker 2 (01:57:18):
Hausm are just two Examples there Are many like Hall
of Fame executives are hall of fame caliber executives that
would be Honored as Much if the hall of. Fame
actually cared about executives General Managers who, have built world
series Teams. DYNASTIES not honored in. COOPERSTOWN i don't know
why i, don't know how that changes, but, If it
(01:57:40):
Ever Does well number one bob. Housen would Go In
immediately number two walt jockey would, get at the very
least at the. Very least, VERY serious consideration so anyway
i wanted to spend a FEW minutes on that Because
i Love a. Good hall of, fame debate but it's
interesting like nobody Knows what Makes a good hall of
fame executs.
Speaker 3 (01:58:00):
Because they never go in we've had.
Speaker 9 (01:58:01):
Two.
Speaker 3 (01:58:03):
Since nineteen seventy eight two think of the dozens and
dozens and dozens and dozens.
Speaker 2 (01:58:08):
Of Team presidents and director of baseball ops and general
managers that, have done just awesome Work. Two have gotten
into cooperstown cooperstown, is better at honoring managers and some have.
ARGUED that managers are underrepresented i would argue general managers
are far. More important than field. Managers, COOPERSTOWN seems too
(01:58:32):
differ anyway i wanted to get that off my chest
and uh positive Vibes to the family of walt.
Speaker 3 (01:58:39):
Chockety woman.
Speaker 5 (01:58:41):
TO quickly yeah one gorilla i didn't get.
Speaker 2 (01:58:45):
A CHANCE, To do this to i. I'll go One
hundred men one hundred. Men's, a lot of men now
it would, come at an extreme loss like there would
be men in the one. Hundred that didn't make it
but at, The end of the day i'm. Taking the
one hundred, men you.
Speaker 1 (01:59:05):
Won, a gorilla one.
Speaker 3 (01:59:07):
Hundred, men.
Speaker 2 (01:59:10):
One a.
Speaker 3 (01:59:11):
GORILLA yeah gorillas, get tired.
Speaker 2 (01:59:14):
I don't know Like gorillas are really, really and by
the way what one hundred men and we like one?
Speaker 3 (01:59:18):
Hundred?
Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
Men LOOK like me gorilla do I get like ONE hundred.
Nfl players and ufc fighters. My, money's on the men
like there's lots, of Different types of men.
Speaker 3 (01:59:32):
But i'm going.
Speaker 2 (01:59:33):
With the sheer math here i'm. Taking the one hundred
men but that was all over social media over the,
weekend because like to me men like the human. Beings could,
Use tactics strategies the gorilla i'm not sure is going
to be able to employ those.
Speaker 3 (01:59:47):
Things we have to. Go My thanks to h tarran.
Bland For Producing.
Speaker 2 (01:59:53):
