Speaker 1 (00:00):
And Jed Black's schedule breakdown Cincinnati Tax Resolution powered by
Tove five to one to three, five to one to three,
toph now your host Moeger.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
For the third consecutive season, the Bengals will play the
Baltimore Ravens on the road on a Thursday night, this
time on Thanksgiving. The Bengals will be playing on Turkey
Day for the first time in fifteen years. Baltimore won
both games against Cincinnati last season, and both losses were
heartbreaking for the Bengals. The game in Cincinnati was decided
in overtime by three points, and the return matchup in

(00:31):
Baltimore was decided by just one point and came down
to a last second failed two point conversion. This matchup,
featuring two quarterbacks or MVP finalists, will likely have a
major impact on the AFC North race, as will the
remation Cincinnati. Just seventeen days later, it'll be the Bengals
and Ravens in Baltimore on Thanksgiving Night, Thursday, November twenty seventh.

(00:55):
Moe has more on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
The official hom the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I'll tell you what, the guy who voices those is
really really good, really really good. He might have a
future and voiceover worth What's up Good afternoon on a Leger.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. I feel like I haven't
been in this studio in a month. My thanks to
Chad Brendle for pinch hitting yesterday. I changed teams for
the afternoon and was on with the Boys down the

(01:26):
Hall from the Holy Grail on the afternoon of Pete
Rose Night, which was a lot of fun. And then
we did our show at U See for five to
one to three day on Tuesday, and so I haven't
been in here, and frankly, I haven't had the chance
that I need that I deserve to talk about a
lot of stuff that's been going on. Specifically it relates
to the Bengals and Trey Hendricks and we had the

(01:47):
schedule lease show last night. Lance and Tony really enjoyed that.
I popped on Paul Danner Junior's podcast, a Growlar Podcast
to talk about that as well, and a special Thursday
visit from Paul is in the office.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Here he is.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
By the way, Reds won the game today seven to one.
A GAVP will have instant reaction and more coming up

Hi Paul, how's it going?

Speaker 4 (02:16):
I was on last night with Austin in what he
dubbed his hour five, and I was like, what is
happening over there?

Speaker 5 (02:26):
But I was.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Wed six hours of schedule release on this station.

Speaker 6 (02:30):
Man, it was it.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
It was great. I enjoyed it. It's one of my
favorite nights in sports. Yeah, it really is one of
my favorite nights in sports because there are gripes and
I've got some, but it's like Selection Sunday, no one loses.
It's just it's setting the table for excitement. It's a
piece that has to be sort of locked in and
now the season is not exactly here, but there are
no losers. I like schedule release night.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
I feel like the Bengals marketing department might feel like
losers today. Yes, would have wouldn't have minded to have
a couple of primetime home games they could build some
stuff around. Yeah, you know, probably would probably probably would
have been something they felt like was pretty cool instead
of another year of, uh, I don't know, watch parties.
And stuff like that. But you're right, you're not. There

(03:15):
really aren't losers, and I'm excited. There's a lot of
lot of fun trips at good times, a lot of
good stuff on the schedule. I know we'll get into
all of it, so I'll allow you to set it
up and take us for every direction you'd like.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, the first thing I was gonna do is I was,
you know, we have to check your work because you
did the mock schedule, box schedule, now the mock schedule.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
I want to I want to preface this because I
this is not unlike when I do mock drafts. I'm
typically trying to anticipate what the Bengals will do. I
was trying to outline the best case scenario for the
Bengals for the sake of knowing what the worst case
would look like if it is the opposite.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
There were a few best case scenario hits on there. Yeah,
I mean, you you nailed Minnesota week three, I did,
you nailed the bye week? I did Arizona Arizona. Yep,
you nailed the Baltimore game on the road. Maybe not
necessarily the placement in the day, but you nailed That's
not bad. Yeah, it was okay, not bad. Yeah it

(04:12):
was okay. I'll take it all right. So there's a
few things with the schedule here. Let's do this part.
I know I mentioned this on yours look. Regardless of
who the Bengals were going to play week one, the
story of the summer, beyond Trey Hendrickson and where he
grandstands next is how did they get off to a
fast start? Can they win their first game? Can they
win their first two? So I'm looking for I'm looking
for bad teams. I'm looking for shaky quarterback situations. I'm

(04:34):
looking for new head coaches. And granted we did a
lot of this last year with the New England Patriots.
I don't have a new head coach in Cleveland, obviously,
but I got a weird quarterback situation, not a great team,
and then I get a rookie quarter or a rookie
head coach in Week two. This team needs to start
to and zero because of what happens over the next
five weeks after Week two. Yeah, I think that's I

(04:55):
think that's fair.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
And it's interesting that you do get two of the
more winnable games on their schedule. If you were looking
at the most winnable games these you'd be starting pretty
close to these two and to get those early and
put that up against their history and what has happened
in terms of they don't win there. Obviously, the win
against Minnesota in twenty twenty one in overtime, a bit

(05:16):
of a gift in its own right, is the only
win in the first two weeks of Zach Taylor's coaching career,
which is which is amazing. And it's been this problem
that they've had and now with so much focus on
the fast start with I mean.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
You can't.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Everywhere I have gone this offseason where there has been
a Bengals representative in front of a microphone or a recorder,
this has been mentioned.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Fast start, gotta start faster. Ye, We're gonna take it
serious this year. You guys should have asked Trey Hendrickson
about that tray. But beyond this, do you think you
need a fast start? And are you impacting that right?

Speaker 4 (05:50):
I'm actually surprised he didn't say that, because it has
been everywhere we've gone from Indianapolis to Palm Beach, to
practice this in the locker room, you name it. And
so if that's the case, and that's this important, and
you have this thing in the first two weeks that
has been a consistent problem there, all of a sudden
is a lot of pressure on these two games to

(06:12):
be different, to look different. But to me, I have
a I'm willing to go bigger picture off of just
the first two weeks because then there's time to make
up for it and all that. My date is October seventeenth. Okay,
when you wake up the morning of October seventeenth, if
the Cincinnati Bengals are over five hundred, they are golden.

(06:36):
They are in a fantastic place in the season in
the big picture of who they what they want to do.
This year's seven games, that is seven games in, that
is get to four and three. By that point, you've
had these five games straight against teams from the playoffs
last year. You had that first two where they've had

(06:57):
the struggles with their winnable spots. If you're sitting there
at four and three, and now you get Jets at home,
Bears at home by Pittsburgh, New England.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
I'm putting this on my phone. By the way, October seventeenth, Yes,
October seventeenth.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
My birthday is the next day. Oh wow, which is
irrelevant and I'm older, but but you look at that
moment and say they are in a great spot if
they get to that, because this is brutal. You know,
at at Minnesota, at Denver, Detroit on a short week,
at green Bay Pittsburgh on a short week. I mean

(07:33):
it's your two home games are both on short weeks.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Plus you have to do some really tough environments to
go play in and one home games against the team
that didn't lose on the road last year.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
You could make arguments top five loudest venues in the
NFL Minnesota, Denver, yeah, and green Bay is its own
venue experience right right, like these are these are these
are tough spots to go play. Now, you got Joe
Burrow and a great Anti Higgins and Jamar Chase and
good team, they should be able to go win plenty
of games. So I'm not saying that this is something

(08:04):
they can't get to. But if they do get to
that spot and they're sitting at four and three, off
they go. The Bengals have checked the no slow start box.
In my mind, that's how I'm looking at it.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
All right, Well, it's there, it is, It's in my phone.
Put it in there seven am, all right? October later?
Are the Bengals it's just been a Thursday night game.
Maybe you should set that for like I got to
get my daughter to school, okay, So now I might
set another one at eleven about it after I drop
her off and then go home and go back to bed.
Maybe another one for eleven thirty or so. But there

(08:37):
it is. Are the Bengals over five hundred?

Speaker 6 (08:39):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (08:39):
And if they are, they're golden?

Speaker 6 (08:40):
All right?

Speaker 2 (08:41):
That might be my poll question. Are the Bengals going
to be over five hundred in the morning of October seventeen?
It's it's it's fascinating. I when it comes to things
like schedules or I mentioned selection Sunday, NCAA tournament draws,
or what time games are going to be, I typically
roll my eye is when people complain, yes, play who

(09:02):
they tell you to play? Go win. So when you
have me last night going, come on, come on with
the Bengals Ravens thing, fourth straight year in primetime, You've
outlined on multiple occasions too much how hard it is
to win on the road in primetime, specifically inside the
AFC North. When you have me last night going, really

(09:24):
a fourth straight year primetime in Baltimore, a third straight
Thursday night. First of all, I love playing Thanksgiving nights. Great,
It's one of those games I think if you're a fan,
you want your team to play in. Right, I'd find
it annoying if I was a Lions fan and had
to do it every year, But like, I think it's
cool as hell. That's better than Black Friday. Right, But
a fourth straight year having to go to Baltimore in
primetime in a season where, as you point out, this

(09:47):
is really likely to be a two team race, come on, man.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
Yeah, and it's impactful, and I just I'm in with you. Like,
the vast majority of things we talk about regarding the
schedule are stupid, yes, and really irrelevant in the big picture.
Stupid fu yeah, I mean, and just in that they
don't really matter. Right, We're talking deep in the weeds
of the margins in the NFL with a lot of
this stuff. This is not that, right, This is not that.

(10:13):
This is six years of experience of AFC North teams
on the road in primetime are three and thirteen. They're
five and eleven against the number in those spots. That's
just fact. That's six years of this happening, and the
Bengals will now have their eighth road primetime game in
that span, and the Ravens won, and the Bengals have

(10:35):
had to do it four straight times going to Baltimore.
And it's not just that, it's that during all of
these four years, everyone has been Sunday at one o'clock
at pay course, aniay, right, And so when that it's
it's fine. No one has a problem with playing whenever
or wherever, as long as you get the return, right,
as long as you occasionally get the return of this

(10:55):
to where you go, okay, well, when you come to
our house, we'll get you back then.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
And even this thing out.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
And you can't say when you look at the numbers
three and thirteen, five and eleven, you can't look at
that and say it's not worth what two three points
on a spread probably extra because of the nature of
the way that these games go and how tough they
are to win in this division. And these two teams
look at the games that they play against each other,

(11:23):
Ravens and Bengals, they all look like this one point
two points that matters. And so for it to be
four straight years, it's that it's come on, really, you
gotta go do it again, and three straight years on
a Thursday, and where.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
It's even harder to go do on a short week.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
It's just I think if there's a gripe that's a
real one, that's a real one that can have an impact,
did have an impact last season and makes just say, Okay,
that's frustrating if you are the Bengals, more than just oh,
we'd like to have more games in primetime because it's
fun to put on those shows.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
No, this is specifically about Bengals v. Ravens, a game
I expect to be in primetime at least one every year.
You mentioned that in the mock schedule, Like those two
teams put on two unbelievable shows last year. Every network
that airs a primetime game should won a piece of
Bengals v. Ravens, two quarterbacks or stars. Like I expect
that in primetime. I just expected to be here occasionally. Yeah,

(12:17):
and I'm you know, surprising, and who knows. Like the
schedules we learned last year, I mean they changed so
much now the last month of the season, I mean,
maybe the return game does end up in primetime or
it ends up in a four o'clock window, which is
I think similar in feel when you get into last
time of year, late year. Yeah, I mean I go
back to that.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
That game against the forty nine ers in twenty twenty
one was one of the coolest atmospheres ever a four
o'clock game.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
It was dark, tense, they stop having Joe Burrow throw
the ball.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
The end wasn't the greatest, but it was one of
the one entertainment games that you'll see. And so but
I look at that and say, okay, maybe it changed,
maybe they do. That game does end up in a
different How does that? How is uh CBS is that
who took that game? How does see yes end up
saying dah put that at one o'clock? Right, that's kind
of stunning to me, Right, how does that note at

(13:05):
least in there, like one of those two teams is
going to be in it?

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah? Probably both? Probably both. So this is my big
hot takes last prediction that the Bengals Ravens game on Sunday,
December fourteenth will not be played at one o'clock and
the Bengals Dolphins game on December twenty first will not
be played at Day twenty. Yeah, I think I'm.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Not counting on Miami being in the middle of anything
in December other than trying to figure out two his future.
I mean, if you were, the thing is and this
is not I mean, I hate to talk about like
injury stuff, but this is what you play in a
game of attrition. Yeah, like quarterbacks, can they make it
to the end of the year, like Miami's had so
much trouble getting healthy to the end of the season,

(13:45):
getting two at the end of the season, and being
playing well at the end of the season. To me,
I look at that and say, that feels like it's
you know, more than I don't see Miami as a
team who's going to have the feel of being worth
that spot and feels very very flexible.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
Yes, you well, for sure, I'm with you on that.
I agree very good. Are you ready to talk about
Trey Hendrickson now? I'm always ready to talk about train acton.
I'm you know, what what else are we going to do? Today?
Is the start of seventy two days of tray seventy two?
Oh yeah, I saw I saw you doing the math
on Twitter. Exactly how you're Peter Kelsey Conway asked me

(14:25):
between now and September seventeenth, How many days will you
spend talking about Trey? And I did the math for
I subtracted all the weekends. I added one because I
assumed the Sunday morning of the first game. So there's
thirty one weekend days. There's a travel day, which it's
not a vacation day. I go to Kansas City for
UC Nebraska. And then you know, I estimated twelve off

(14:47):
days this summer because it's load management season. So I
arrived at seventy two, seventy two days of tray starts. Next,
do you do you want to borrow?

Speaker 4 (14:56):
Do you want to borrow our sounder from our podcast
our days of our live trays.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Of our last summer?

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Very solids, but it's very good, all right, you can
have it if you need it.

Speaker 2 (15:04):

minute delay on at Ezelik with traffic.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
This report is sponsored by special Thursday visit from Paul
Danner Junior at The Athletic dot Com and the Growlar Podcast.
We talked about the schedule. Paul has written about the schedule,
he's podcasting about the schedule. Now we get to talk
about Trey Hendrickson, Let's do it.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
I love this.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
You've you've been covering the Bengals for a long time now,
and when you have that sort of job, you're gonna
cover a lot of things that I guess to outsiders
look bizarre. That looked bizarre on Tuesday morning? Is that
one of the more bizarre just scenes where Trey is
standing there talking to you guys for close to a
half hour about his side of the story as it

(16:48):
relates to the Bengals, and then mere feet away his
teammates are practicing. That's that visual to me just watching
the footage with Striking. What was it like from your perspective?
Top five surreal moment?

Speaker 4 (16:58):
The entire the entire day really, And I outlined some
of it in my story where I kind of talked
to him in his car on the way in as
he was coming in because he was just, you know,
he was just kind of taking the place by storm. Yeah,
a little bit like he was showed up as everybody
was walking out to practice and I was walking up
to go out there the same and end up talking

(17:19):
to him on the street for about twenty minutes or
whatever before that, and so like it's it's just really
it's really weird. It was bizarre, and he wanted but
he wanted to talk. He's like, I want my voice
out there. I want I want. I feel he was
provoked by like a shark. I guess yeah, and like

(17:40):
all that and so, but yeah, when he goes out
there and he's standing out there and it's the world
of cleats and shorts and practice and everybody out there
is doing their thing.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
It's very business like.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
And then here's somebody, you know, fresh off of the
eighteenth tee or whatever like was happening there. You know,
it's just and it's not to like like that's a
weird thing for a person to where it just in
that environment. It is so weird to see somebody like
that just standing there like that talking to security and
pr and like occasion he talked to Jerry Montgomery, the

(18:13):
new defensive line coach, for a little bit. But outside
of that, like it's a place of business. Yeah, Like,
have you ever gone into your workplace, like for some
reason you had to go there and like at night
or something like that, and some people are in there
and maybe I don't know you were at you were
out out of dinner or something. Like that, and you're
just like, I shouldn't be here. Yes, like this is
it's weird for them, it's weird for me. I think

(18:35):
we all felt like this is just too surreal to
look at. And then once the conversation starts, and I
just I felt a little bit like Trey was just
kind of on the therapy couch a little bit. He
feels like a player who feels like he's losing his mind,
and he's like, I've you know, he said I've tried

(18:55):
silent that didn't work. Clearly those are his words, not mine,
I mean, and he feels like he is going to
try this. He feels like he's out of things to
do other than to say how he feels to everyone.
And cause this, you know, obvious distraction, I mean, practice
is happening right behind you. And I just think he's
kind of at his at his end of what he's

(19:16):
supposed to do with this anymore. And because he feels
like it's been years of this going on and he
just wants to.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Get paid what he's worth. I understand that.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
I am empathetic to his situation as a as a player,
feeling like you've never gotten your worth and you've just
gone out there and performed, and you've tried many different
methods to get that. But this isn't helping him accomplish
what he wants to accomplish, which is a deal with
the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Maybe it's helping him some world of public opinion, maybe not.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Maybe it's maybe nationally, and I think that maybe.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
That's part of this. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (19:55):
Maybe he just feels like he just this is, like
he said, it became a thing of value to him
where he's not just gonna sit there and feel like
he's being wronged and be quiet about it, and he
wants to speak up and feel like his side has
been heard.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (20:08):
But but that.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Type of thing, you know, you talked about how long
I've been around here is we've seen many times things
of that. ILK do zero You think that has an
impact in the corner.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Offices up there right? A contract squabble in May?

Speaker 4 (20:29):
Yeah, I mean the flowers are blooming right, this is
it's it's May. This is what happens around here, the
Kentucky Derby and contract squabble and Mike Brown's not budgeting
like this is You're not this isn't this isn't news.
This isn't something that's gonna shake the tree. And and
I understand him feeling a need to vent his frustration,

(20:49):
but it's not if getting a deal done is what
he's trying to do with this. Uh, it was gonna
be ineffective, and it was ineffective in that regard. But
if he's trying to win over some grand or public
opinion of look at how they're treating me, everybody. I
feel like I'm being wronged in Cincinnati, then maybe that,
maybe that resonated, maybe that, but I don't know where

(21:10):
the I don't know where the win is necessarily right.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
I mean, I saw somebody desperate. I saw somebody frustrated.
I saw somebody who's maybe exhausted every other possibility. I
saw somebody who clearly has lost all leverage that he
may have had with the Bengals. And I understand that man.
Like I've said all along, as a general rule, I
don't think either side is necessarily incorrect as it relates

(21:34):
to their individual stances. But that said, like I watched
that entire thing twice. I was amused by it because
the visual is funny. His teammates are practicing He's dressed
like somebody who played eighteen with clients in the morning
and then had to stop by the office and then
is going to go play eighteen with his buddies. And

(21:57):
I watched it. I laughed at it. Then I asked myself,
and I asked the question publicly. Okay, what really was accomplished?
If the end goal is to bring the Bengals closer
to your position, that ain't how to do it. I
don't know how to do it, but I know that's
not gonna work. So what what was achieved? What was

(22:19):
accomplished you? I heard you say this earlier this week.

Speaker 4 (22:23):
It was an announcement and a reiteration of something you
already should have known a few the Bengals. I'm gonna
be a distraction. This is what it's gonna look like.
I'm not gonna sit and be quere I'm gonna show
up fresh off eighteen, and I am gonna be standing
on the side talking to the media and saying anything
I want to say about anything, and they're gonna eat
it up because it's what we're there to do. I mean,

(22:44):
if this is a if this is the thing, if
if this is what it is it's a story. And
if he wants to wage this war, I mean, I
don't know how many twenty five minute sessions we're gonna
sit through.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
I want one every day every day during training camp, ma'am.

Speaker 4 (23:00):
But I mean, this is this is it. This is
what it's gonna be. It's gonna be hey, this is
what distractions look like. And and last year, you know,
Jamar was not as open at this point that he
was going to be a distraction. He just wasn't around.
He was in a in a hat, but he was.
He went silent with the media and they did their

(23:21):
negotiating behind closed doors, and the deal didn't get done.
It made progress, and I think that was part of
the way it was going on. We all knew what
was happening, but it wasn't he was as doing what
he did with the hold in last year. He was
as small of a distraction as that can be. And
it but it but it, you know, it was impactful.

(23:44):
It cost him a game. At least we were morning
the first game, right, and so it had it had
the desired effect, but it wasn't as public and combative.
Public and combative is not going to do anything necessarily,
But if that's why he wants to approach it, just
to make sure everybody knows at every return like, Hey,
I'm not gonna sit here and take this quietly. I

(24:04):
want to get my deal done. Okay, here's the thing
I'll ask you. Yeah, if you were at this point
in your career, and I think it's fair to say
it's slim to none that Trey gets traded at this point,
it's just too hard to pull off. This is they
should have done it back in March ninth. I wrote
about that this week. That's all I kept thinking watching
it the whole time was how avoidable this was. Like,
if you didn't want this to for the Bengals and

(24:25):
you don't, you had an opportunity to go to the
other direction, you shouldn't. But if you're a Trey and
they have some semblance of a two year off on
the table, which is kind of what everybody is suggested
and inferring here, that's substantial enough. Don't you just say, Man,
I know it's not what I want, but I'm not

(24:46):
gonna get what I want, and I'm gonna take more
risk at playing out this one year or whatever. And
just thinking that and then trying to do it again
and being a year older and hitting free agency then
made rather than just conceding that, like, you know what,
this is a lot of money and taking it. And

(25:07):
I feel like that's a really hard thing to wrestle with.
When he knows he's worth more, he knows what he's are,
he knows the Miles Garrett, the Maxx Crosby, the Daniel
Hunter like those deals have set a different market than
what he sees in front of him, And I get
being frustrated by that. But if it's about life changing money,
and if it's about getting more of closer to what
you're worth, I think there's a moment where you have

(25:30):
to say, man, I would love for this to be
four years and a bunch of guarantee and all of that.
It's not, but what's the better option. I think the
Bengals know they have him in that spot and they're
taking advantage of it. And I know there's a lot
of people on the other side that would say, well,
that's where I cry fout. Quit trying to take advantage
of your best players. This is what's been happening here.

(25:51):
This is part of the problem, right, But if your Trey,
you have to face that reality. And I think he's
at some point gonna face that reality where that isn't
for whatever we'll be in front of him at that moment,
and the idea of on May thirteenth. It's easy to
say I'm not going to play or I'm gonna do
this or that on September seventh. That's hard, especially when

(26:12):
you have all that money sitting in front of you.
And I think everybody on the Bengal side seems to be,
by their actions, betting on the fact that Trey will
come around because he has been unhappy with his contract
every year, and he's come around every year and he's
played great every year, and I think they're willing to
go back down that path again.

Speaker 2 (26:31):
It's what Katie said, He's gonna have to be happy. Yes,
he's gonna, you know, essentially have to be happy with
what we've offered. I'm paraphrasing or here, but that's that's
what she's what she's said. Yeah, absolutely, what I do that.
It's easy for me to say yes, yeah, yeah, I'd say, Okay,
it's kind of out of my control.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
Now.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
I can't get what I really want, but I can
get something better than I have Yeah, Can I reconcile
myself with that and not be resentful, not be remorseful,
not be driven nuts by the what ifs and what
could have been? Like, I might have to talk myself
into that place, But at the end of the day,
if I'm bettering the situation that I'm in now, it

(27:10):
might it might take some self convincing, but I think
I would ultimately say, yeah, Okay, fine, let's go ahead
and get it done. Yeah, But that's that's easy for
me to say. Man, yeah, I think he's wired differently,
but I don't know specifically how he's wired. Is he
gonna spend the entire year miserable and not being miserable
to his teammates and to you guys? But is he gonna?

(27:31):
Am I gonna be miserable doing this? Because then it's
not worth it? But can I be happy with this
deal that they've put in front of me? It's easy
for me to say yes, But I say.

Speaker 4 (27:42):
Yes, it's so hard these guys that are you mentioned
wired driven by competitiveness and ego and proving that you're
the best every day? And how are you judged by
being the best in the NFL? Other than how much
money you make, right, and so you got to put
your ego aside, your competitiveness aside, every way that you're

(28:05):
wired that got you to this spot aside, and say
I understand that this is best, this is the best
thing that's probably it's going to get for me, and
come to terms with that, or say I'll take my
chances and ride it out, but it may cost me
tens of millions of dollars and is that worth it?
That's really tough for someone to wrestle with. And I

(28:26):
felt like for twenty five minutes we visually watched him
wrestle with it in front of us the other day.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
So I want to continue to continue the conversation about
how he's wired because that frames how at least I
feel about his willingness to miss games. And then there's
something that Trey said on Tuesday that lost me where
he lost me, and I want to spend some time
on that as well. And then there's one other player

(28:54):
we have to talk about before four o'clock if we
have time.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
Oh, I wonder who that is. We'll keep people go
and then do you or do you know what's going on?

Speaker 2 (29:02):
I got this statement from the Bengals about Hamilton County
and a consulting firm and lawyers. I'll catch up with
that during the break. You really don't have to, Okay,
it's a twenty two away from four. You had to
that bike.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
If I didn't already kind of know about that, that
really would have ruined my day right there.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
You just saying that, trying you know what the schedule
comes out.

Speaker 4 (29:23):
I'm able to hit the golf course in the in
the morning, you know, try to go off the grid
for a hot minute.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
That was a little bit of a radio trick. It
was me acknowledging to the audience that this thing is
out there, but I don't care. I don't care. It
is twenty two minutes away from four o'clock. He's Paul
Danner Junioramoegor. This is ESBN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports.

(31:03):
On Trays of Our Lives. Trey Hendrickson comes off as
kind of a different cat, and that's not an insult.
He just comes off as a little bit of a
different guy. I've heard people who have spent more time
with Trey Hendrickson than I have, obviously, who have said
he's just he's wired a little bit differently. What we

(31:25):
saw on Tuesday would certainly suggest that compared to your
average player going through a contract negotiation with an NFL team,
he's wired a little bit different. Again, that's fine, that's
all well and good. But because of that, I take
a little bit more seriously the threat, either if it
comes from him directly or if it's just out there

(31:45):
and expressed by somebody else, that he'll actually miss football
games that count. Should I I don't know.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
I mean, I would venture to say no, that he
won't only because when push has come to show before
he is, he's played. I don't know if this is different,
and I don't know how it benefits him to, you know,
not be on the field.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
I don't know. I don't.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
I don't know that that's gonna change things. Maybe it maybe,
maybe it does.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
I just don't. I don't see that. I mean, at
the end of the day, I wouldn't forego the money
that comes with right, and that's also part of it.
I mean, it's also a huge part of all this
upset about money. Why give back more money?

Speaker 4 (32:33):
Give back more money, You're just jeopardizing more of it
if you're going to go that direction. And again that
takes you back to the decision if you're either gonna
go play on this and make this or you're gonna
take whatever the other the offer is that's on the table. Yeah,
but yeah, I don't think predicting this situation is stupid.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
I mean, after two days, Tray, none of this stupid.
I mean, after Tuesday.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
I know, anybody that says I know what's gonna happen next,
it is crazy, Like there's no way you can say
that for certain. But I you know, I have a
feeling there will be there will come a point in
time where it'll get where it'll get figured out. That's
that's where my gut lives today.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
But again, it's it's quite unpredictable and you never quite
know what's gonna happen. Trey referenced provoked shark attacks, and
he was referencing I guess this text message that he
says he got from Zach Taylor, where Zach told him
in so many words, if you don't come to mandatory
mini caamp, you can be fined. And I think there's

(33:42):
two things about that. Number One, none of us know
what the context of that conversation was. Zach may have
just said, hey, just by the way, man, like, if
you don't come up, they're gonna find you. He could
have been cool about it. He could have been funny
about like. I don't know. Also, I think a private
text conversation been a coach and a player should not
be put out into the public realm. I have a

(34:04):
problem with Trey Hendrickson doing that. I just think that's wrong.
I think it's say what you one about Zach Taylor.
Maybe you don't like Zach Taylor as a coach. Zach
Taylor's not the reason why Trey Hendrickson's not getting what
he wants financially and contractually. To do that. I just
think it's a real crummy thing to do.

Speaker 4 (34:21):
Yeah, and we heard him talk about how, you know,
when we asked about last time money was exchange and
all that, He's like, well, I feel, you know, blessed
to be in these private discussions with them, and I'm
gonna leave those private. Well, okay, well you can't leave
one private. Yeah, and then you're here talking about a
text message that was private in the other one. So

(34:45):
I think, but like a lot of things that kind
of came out of that, there was a lot of
both sides kind of showing up in the conversation, and
so it was hard to totally follow where the line
of offense is drawn and the line of privacy is drawn.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
Exchange between a coach and a player should should be
yes the time.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yeah, and and and it's and it's true, like it's
easy to.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Say, you know, on.

Speaker 4 (35:10):
The surface, they what are they doing telling them he's
gonna get fine when they're not and he goes, but
we don't know, Like you can't sit here and say that,
oh it came off that way, or it wasn't part
of day's worth of conversation like you said, or throwaway
comment or or put in put put into whatever frame
that it needed to be put into. Nobody's gonna gonna

(35:31):
know that. And they're not gonna come out there and say,
you know, they're they're The Bengals have played sort of
the the quiet side of this. I mean, they haven't
said anything other than what Katie said and what Duke
said at the combine, which have all acknowledged they're trying
to give Tray more money. It's a matter of how much,
and that's where they have a difference of opinion. And
Trey said as much. They may think that they've offered

(35:52):
they've offered me enough money, but I don't think they've
offered me enough money. And I get that, but like
when you when you then take it to this level
when it's just a matter of a discrepancy over how
much money you should be getting, when they're they are
offering you some more. Yeah, I mean, I understand frustration
and feeling. I bet it feels personal on both.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Sides right now. Fine, I get it feeling personal. I understand,
like that totally makes sense. Yeah, I just think you're
head coach telling you something that frankly you should know already,
but that we don't know the context of that. I'm
gonna just guess. Wasn't Zach being threatening? It was Look, dude,
I mean, I'm your coach. But here's here's what happens.

(36:31):
They can find you. It's mandatory, mandatory suggests if you
don't show up, you could get fine, like just FYI,
I don't know what you're thinking this summer, but here's
what they could do to you. However that unfolded. I
think it's a crummy thing to do.

Speaker 9 (36:43):
Man.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
Yeah, I think coach and player text exchanges, conversations. I
just think that should remain between the individual parties involved.

Speaker 4 (36:53):
And you know, I think it's it becomes And Zach
Taylor has had to kind of become the shield, taking
all the arrows for this stuff for a number of years,
a good job of it, right, Like he tried to
He tried to defuse the Jamar situation, the te situation,
the Trace situation last year and Johan and Williams, like

(37:14):
all of these are things he's tried to help defuse it.
And a lot of times we've heard when communication is
brought up, it has consistently been about between the front
office and the player, and it's never really been about
a lack of communication between the coaching staff and the player,
because they seem to be the ones that always have
to be out there delivering these messages or these conversations

(37:36):
and it feels like it's not connecting it and and
so I understand that frustration, but then like going going
off on the person who's the one that is being
sent out when he's not the ones.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
Controlling the contract situation.

Speaker 4 (37:48):
Either is yeah, No, I mean I would I would
say as well, it's like, okay, what are what is
happening here?

Speaker 3 (37:54):
Right?

Speaker 2 (37:54):
Three more things and we don't have a lot of time.
Zach is scheduled to talk on Tuesday next week, so
is Joe bro Joe Burrow. What do you thing's gonna
happen when you guys bring up Trey Hendrickson.

Speaker 4 (38:03):
Well, to Zach, I can imagine, you know, it'll probably
sound a lot like a lot of stuff he said
about Trey. He's not gonna have new updates. I don't
think it's going to be you know, I think he'll
probably play it politically correct and down the middle, as
he usually does with that type of stuff.

Speaker 2 (38:18):
Joe, I don't know.

Speaker 6 (38:21):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (38:21):
I mean, look, look at one point I felt like
you could feel like you knew how the quarterback would
talk about these situations. But that was before the Dallas
game in December. Things have changed. The power has been wielded.
He is, he has every box checked on his checklist
that he put out there except for this one. So
does he still view that as a box that needs

(38:43):
to be checked or does he view that as that
box is doing stuff that I don't support right.

Speaker 2 (38:49):
Now, Trey Hendrickson said, And again I'm paraphrasing, Hey, if
I had four sacks last year that asked for money back,
and he's maybe right about that? How far away was
Gino Stone when Trey said that? And could Gino have
gone like, I'm right here, I'm right here, I'm right here,
you can mention me my name, I'm right here. It's true.

Speaker 4 (39:09):
It is true, which, you know, another situation of how
things just go sideways.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
But I mean, you know, I don't know about the
Geno stun't. I know, I didn't like it. I don't
like it still.

Speaker 4 (39:22):
I didn't like it then, I don't like it now.
I don't understand the thing beyond the pay cut and
is he worth it or what? What should you pay him?
Is that there's just the two facts don't line up.
You either are not going to bring in competition for
this guy, and you say you're our guy Gino doesn't

(39:42):
match up with But do it for four point nine?

Speaker 2 (39:46):
Right? Do it take less money to do it? Like?

Speaker 4 (39:49):
That's that doesn't make any sense to me. And then
so you get it, why if people start getting into money? Yeah,
I mean, what do we Nobody understands quite what all
is happening.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
I got like thirty seconds here. What do we make
of the Schamar Stewart situation.

Speaker 4 (40:04):
It's overrated. In my opinion, he'll get in, he'll practice.
First of all, you should see how much they're not
doing out there right now, just.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
Until it looks real, until it matters more.

Speaker 4 (40:17):
It's silly, like this is stuff that's easily avoidable, and
they're screwing it up. I also don't think that whatever
he's not doing on the field right now is going
to impact whether he's going to be a good player
or not at any point in camp or this year.
And so for that fact, it's not a huge deal.
It's silly that that how do you screw this one up?
I mean, how do you botch the layup on the pick?

(40:38):
I don't understand that. It's silly. I also don't think
it necessarily would have a big impact on him as
a player in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (40:45):

we have talked a lot about this season as it

(42:26):
relates to FC Cincinnati. How do they get more goal scoring?
But the defense was terrific last night. Kai Kamara made
his FC Cincinnati debut and look sharp and they picked
up three points on the road with a big game

(42:49):
Brandanman and Jones on baseball as well. Good stuff from
Paul Dayner Junior. Last hour on the Bengals. Good stuff
from the Reds today. I think today was the first
must win of the season. I mean that sounds maybe
you think there were others. I think you could maybe
argue that first game in San Francisco was one. But
let's be honest, man. They had a disastrous road trip

(43:10):
last week, a disastrous road trip to Atlanta and Houston.
They come home and they lose the first two games
against the White Sox team that came to town seventeen
games under five hundred. They play a pretty good Cleveland
game or a Cleveland team this weekend in the Battle
of Ohio, the Ohio Cup on the line. You cannot

(43:32):
get swept by the Chicago White Sox, you said, And look, man,
it happens sometimes contending teams which the Reds aspire to
be get beat at home and they get swept against
teams that shouldn't sweep them. But let's be real, men,
they could not afford to get swept by the Chicago
White Sox. Fortunately they did not. One of the reasons

(43:53):
Nick Martinez. Nick Martinez got off to a slowish start
this year his last few stars. It's he's been pretty good. Today.
He was outstanding against admittedly not a great Chicago lineup,
seven shutout innings. He gave up just two hits, and
he talked after the.

Speaker 11 (44:08):
Game key for every picture obviously, But you've gone three
straight starts without walking and got hamport.

Speaker 2 (44:18):
Has that been for you?

Speaker 12 (44:19):
Yes, it's part of my game, attacking, attacking the zone
and challenging Henderson.

Speaker 6 (44:24):
Yeah, foks walks are no good. You know, how was
your mix today?

Speaker 2 (44:27):
How would you assass solid mix? I was able to,
you know, locate my.

Speaker 12 (44:31):
Fastball, change speeds, read swings well, and communicate well with Steve.

Speaker 6 (44:36):
How much of the early lead helped?

Speaker 3 (44:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (44:39):
Yeah, that's that's always nice. Obviously, gives me a lot
of confidence, gets me into a groove which then you know,
quick innings get you know, continues to get like keep
them in a groove and more runs.

Speaker 2 (44:50):
So it's a nice little cycle.

Speaker 13 (44:53):
I think you got to just go over two point
five stars somewhere there is relyable of best work for
you as a starting hitters at a guy who would
be his rosters.

Speaker 12 (45:03):
Yeah, that's definitely what I shoot to be. I mean,
I don't really look at the numbers. More so just
getting out there and giving our team some innings and
a and a chance to win ball games is probably
where my focus is at more. But yeah, I want
to be a guy that's reliable at any capacity, and
and you know, someone that gives us team a chance
to win ball games, do you.

Speaker 6 (45:20):
Believe do you see the offense trending up? Yesterday nine
it's just two runs, but today, you know.

Speaker 14 (45:26):
A does it hits seven runs?

Speaker 6 (45:28):
Do you do you see.

Speaker 2 (45:29):
That changing now?

Speaker 15 (45:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (45:30):
Yeah, yeah, we you know obviously, you know we've we've
we're going through it there for a little while, and
you know, I think, uh, sometimes it just takes a
couple of days to to kind of get grooming again.
And the boys look good today and took some really
good at bats, and you know, we we play some
small ball early, right, you know, we we got we
got on, we got them over, another base hit and

(45:51):
sack sack fly, and it felt like today we let
the big hits come to us instead of us chasing
the big hits. And you know, we were doing what
the game was asking us to do. And then the
big hits came after that, and so you know, I
think that's who we are.

Speaker 2 (46:04):
Nick Martinez. We stole that audio from the fan Dual
Sports Network. His last five starts his era two point
zero five seven shutout innings. Today, the Red scored three
times in the first inning. You heard the reference to
little ball. Look, I don't like bunting. I think bunting's
bad strategy. But let's be honest, man, when you're as
bad as this team has been offensively twenty six runs
in their last ten games coming into today, and thirteen

(46:26):
of those runs coming in one game and ten of
those runs coming in one inning, you have to pretty
much try anything. They scored three in the first they
got some long ball support Will Benson Homard. He also
drove in two with a hit in the first inning.
Matt McClain hit a home run. Matt McClain has given
this team some good at bats in the eight hole,
and Ellie de la Cruz homeward as well, his eighth
of the season. Cincinnati wins seven to one. Will Benson

(46:50):
has played pretty well since his call up from Louisville.
Had a really good game in centerfield last night. Again,
got the start in centerfield today, drove in three, hit
his first home run as a red this season, and
spoke after the game.

Speaker 11 (47:05):
Much need today as well. I know you guys have
been pressing to score some runs, and you knew it
was coming at some point, and how much of the
help that it came today.

Speaker 6 (47:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (47:13):
I mean, I think what's good about our team is
we take it one day at a time. We had
a meeting before the game saying we're doing all the
right things.

Speaker 6 (47:20):
We just need to click.

Speaker 15 (47:22):
We just need that one big hit in that one beginning,
and we got it today.

Speaker 11 (47:26):
You got a couple of big hits today and the
home run at Battle to to count. I think were
you hunting fastball right there?

Speaker 15 (47:32):
To be quite honest, I was looking for something more up,
just because I understood like he's kind of been going
hard hard a lot. He hadn't really shown me the curveball. Yes,
I was like, okay, well good, good, good thing, or
good chance he might throw that. But then he went
fast all up and I got to it.

Speaker 11 (47:49):
You have been working on the news stands, holding the
bat lower, a little more.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
Relaxed at the plate.

Speaker 11 (47:54):
That takes some time and takes some muscle memory. Are
you finally feeling like that's coming around at.

Speaker 2 (47:59):
This level now?

Speaker 3 (48:00):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (48:00):
For sure?

Speaker 15 (48:01):
I think is like I said, it's one day at
a time.

Speaker 6 (48:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (48:04):
Every day I go in with a plan in terms of,
you know, how can I put myself in the best
position to succeed every day and I have been consistent
with every team.

Speaker 11 (48:13):
So with the Freedo out the last couple of games,
you're thrown into center field, which you've played before.

Speaker 2 (48:18):
But boy did you get a lot of chances.

Speaker 11 (48:20):
How pleased are you with the defense you put in
in this series?

Speaker 15 (48:23):
Yeah, man, I'm grate for the opportunity to go out
there and play. I take pride in and trying to
shag and have an act as shagged before the games.
And yeah, man, I got a few opportunities and I
cashed him in.

Speaker 2 (48:36):
I like Will Benson, and we like FanDuel Sports Network
for letting us steal their audio. Two hit day, a
homer three driven in Reds win seven to one, hosting
the Guardians in Game one of the Ohio Cup tomorrow.
So Reds needed today. They're now twenty one and twenty four.
My basic question is this, The Chicago Cubs right now
are on pace to win ninety two games. Now, you

(48:57):
might not think the Cubs are going to win ninety
two games, but the Cubs are on to win ninety
two games. The Cardinals have been awesome the last couple
of weeks. We'll see if that sustains the Reds and
Brewers basically feel like the same team. The pace right
now is ninety two ninety two by the Chicago Cubs.
To get to ninety two wins, the Reds are gonna
have to win seventy one of their next one hundred

(49:18):
and seventeen games. That would mean they have to play
over six hundred baseball. Can that happen? That's the question.
Can that happen? I think you're being reasonable if, despite
today's victory, you say the answer is no. Last night,
the Pete Rose Knight ceremonies were terrific. The Reds that

(49:39):
a really good job with that. The Marty Q and
A with Eric Davis and Barry Larkin and George Foster
was very good. Last night did not feel like a funeral.
Last night did not feel like a eulogy. Last night
felt like a celebration. And if you're not a big
Pete Rose fan, you didn't have to watch, you didn't
have to go. Pete's daughter giving a speech, not a

(50:00):
very long winded speech, but giving like a three to
four minute speech I thought was terrific. Obviously, everything that
went down last night occurred against the backdrop of what
we found out Tuesday and that that's Pete Petees off
the ineligible list and now eligible at least for Hall
of Fame consideration. We'll see if he ultimately gets in
in a couple of years. The ceremony was really nice.

(50:22):
I have thought for years that the Cincinnati Reds are
a baseball team that does everything really, really well except
for baseball. They are a major league franchise that is awesome,
I believe, at pretty much everything except baseball. You know,

(50:42):
they're awesome at honoring their past, awesome at celebrating iconic
moments and iconic players and historically significant teams that are
a part of the Reds franchise. They're awesome at that.
They're awesome at community involvement, theme at staging offseason events.
They're awesome at social media. They've got a terrific Hall

(51:07):
of Fame. They're awesome at the ballpark experience. They're awesome
at dressing up the ballpark from when it was first
built over twenty years ago. They're awesome at creating an
environment at the game that I think is fun for
pretty much any type of person that wants to go.
They're awesome at all this stuff. They're not awesome at baseball.

(51:32):
And last night to me felt like a reminder of that.
Maybe you don't want to talk about that because they
won today, and that's fine. And maybe you don't want
to talk about last night's game because you were so
caught up in the Pete Rose nostalgia, and that's fine too.
But like that game last night, I couldn't help but
wonder they had a packed house for a Wednesday night game.

(51:52):
I'm sure a lot of people who haven't been to
the ballpark in quite a while. You want to get
some of those people to come back play better than
I did last night. It just feels like last night
was a little bit of a reminder of that. In
this one sort of I don't know, three hour package,
proof of what the Reds do that's really good, celebrating

(52:12):
the past and proof of what the Reds haven't been
good at in a very long time, being good in
the present. FC Cincinnati's good in the present? Can they
be good on Saturday? The guy who's going to call

match and scheduled to join us. I think we're having
a hard time connecting with Keith, and so my guy
Tarn is working on that. Hopefully we can track him down.
Chad Brendle's gonna join us in just about twenty minutes.
The Trey Hendrickson thing on Tuesday morning, to me, you know,
we really didn't get a chance to talk about it
extensively on Tuesday because we were doing the show from

(54:34):
Uce and you know, I mean, you always want to
be talking about the thing that's going on in the
topic of the day. But I agree with what Paul
said last hour. My takeaway from Tuesday was Trey is
telling us he's going to be a topic all summer long,
because he's going to be a distraction. I don't know
if he is going to show up and grandstand. And
I say grandstand, and you know that might sound like

(54:58):
an insult.

Speaker 5 (54:58):
It's not.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
It's not a criticism. But that's what he was doing.
He was grandstanding for twenty five minutes talking with the
media about his side of the back and forth or
the lack of back and forth between him and the Bengals.
I don't know if there's gonna be something like that again.
I don't know if he's gonna come to mandatory mini camp.
I don't know if he is going to grandstand mandatory.
I have no idea. But to me, the message was

(55:22):
I am going to be a distraction. When you're a
player and your teammates are practicing just a few feet away,
and you're standing there talking about yourself. You're not in
your practice gear, you're not wearing anything with a team
logo on it, you got your golf gear on, and
you're talking about your contract situation. To me, that's that
is a that is quite essential distraction. If you're doing

(55:46):
your job and one of your co workers is off
to the side in full view and you could see
them and they're talking about something that frankly has nothing
to do with what you're doing. That's not a distraction,
of course it is. So the message was I am
going to be a distraction. I think Trey Hendrickson should
be a distraction, and that's okay. I think Trey makes
some very very fair points. I think he comes from

(56:07):
a position that I understand. Right, dude wants to be
one of the highest paid edge rushers in the NFL.
I can't blame him, and the Bengals see Tray as
moving forward a depreciating asset, and so we're not going
to give him specifically what he wants, but we are
offering a pay raise. I don't necessarily believe that that
point of view is wrong. But what Trey was doing,

(56:30):
and I think this is inarguable he's trying to curry
some public favor like what he did on Tuesday probably
doesn't compel the Bengals to come to the negotiating table
in a hurry and give him what he wants. I
don't think that Tuesday morning pushed the two sides closer
to getting a deal done. Mechanically speaking, that accomplished nothing,
and I think Trey is smart enough to know that.

(56:53):
But what he was trying to do was, you know,
maybe get some public support, maybe create some leverage, because
he doesn't really have any with the Bengals right now,
and so the best way to do that is to
get some some public support, some fan support, some media support,
whether it's local or national. But the thing that he
did that I just I think is weak as hell.
And this is not a reason why the Bengals shouldn't

(57:15):
sign him. I think it's weak. If you're a player
and your coach is texting you for you to the
reveal the context of that text conversation publicly, I just
think that's weak. What was not weak was last night
Kevin Denka's goal. FC Cincinnati goes to Toronto and wins,
and it sets up on Saturday, what's going to be
a really fun atmosphere it always is for the Hell

(57:36):
Is Real matchup f C Cincinnati on the road against Columbus,
a big game in the Eastern Conference. FC Cincinnati coming
in off a win, getting three points last night in Toronto,
getting set to take on their arch rival. The game
is on MLS Season Pass, Apple TV, and Keith Costigan
has the call and kind enough to join this this
afternoon Keith. It's good. It's good to have you. How
are you.

Speaker 9 (57:57):
I'm good, I'm good.

Speaker 16 (57:58):
I'm excited to call what fast becoming the most heated
rivalry in Major League soccer.

Speaker 9 (58:03):
So can wait to get there this weekend. I know
you guys have a couple of big name players who will.

Speaker 16 (58:08):
Be playing in their first hell Israel, and I think
it's gonna be a really electric game this weekend.

Speaker 6 (58:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (58:13):
I was thinking about that last night watching Kevin Danke
that the fun part of a rivalry is to see
new players on both sides get their first taste of it.
And so what is already a big deal on Saturday,
to me is even bigger.

Speaker 3 (58:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 16 (58:27):
And you know when you score a goal for your team,
when you sign for a new team, goals matter, But
when you score a goal or you have a magic
moment against your biggest rival, that lives forever because fans
talk about the rivalry games long after they're done. So
for den K, for a Evander, these are the big moments.
That's what you bring them in to take on your rivals.
And look, again, we talked about rivalries, can they live

(58:49):
up to billing the fact that Cincinnati and Columbus crew
are so high in the standings. They're both challengers every
year over the last couple of seasons. Just adds the
extra ingredient that makes this the most explosive game of
the weekend for me, can't wait to watch.

Speaker 9 (59:05):
I think Columbus.

Speaker 16 (59:06):
Probably get a little bit more love than Cincinnati in
the national media, If'm being completely honest. So if I'm Cincinnati,
I'm using that as well as fuel to fire the
flames ahead of this weekend's march.

Speaker 2 (59:18):
Why is Columbus getting more love? I don't you know what.

Speaker 16 (59:22):
I don't know whether it's maybe considered a more sexy.

Speaker 9 (59:26):
Way of playing and the.

Speaker 16 (59:29):
Style of play, having more possession. I think that enamors
a lot of the national media. Cincinnati are quietly going
about their business, but then again, you look at that
final third and they brought in two of the most explosive,
most exciting players in Major League soccer. Maybe this is
just my opinion. I don't know whether you feel that way.
I just feel Columbus get a little bit more love.

(59:51):
It goes that a little bit further. That's not to
say Cincinnati aren't as good, but if I'm Cincinnati, I
definitely play into that as I go into the rivalry game.

Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
Yeah, and you know FC Cincinnati could have done something
about that in the Eastern Conference final two years ago
and let that game get away, And so uh, I
think you're right about that. When I look at FC Cincinnati,
what we have talked about a ton here is how
Pat Noonan has figured out a way to get results,
to get points while dealing with a lot of stuff
on the fly, turnover from last year, the Lujo Acosta situation,

(01:00:22):
new additions to the team, hectic travel schedule, early players
missing time because of injury. They've had a lot players
missing time because of commitments to national teams. And yet
they there, they are atop the Eastern Conference and that's great.
But I think last night was an illustration of what
everybody's concern is. They scored a goal and then kind
of stopped and had to rely on their defense, and

(01:00:43):
I just wonder how sustainable that is. Yeah, I would
look at it different.

Speaker 16 (01:00:48):
You look at last night Columbus group they played against Montreal.
They got held in that game. Montreal haven't had a
good season. I think the game before the rivalry game
is a trop game because I don't care what every
player will tell you we're only focused on the next
game that we're playing. Yeah, easier said than done, because
everyone's looking towards hellas real. So the fact that you
went away difficult place and got a result and picked

(01:01:12):
up the win is a positive moving on to the weekend.
And I think when you talk about championship level teams,
we all want to have the explosive wins. We all
want to talk about the three four nails. All look
at the football that we played. But in the moments
when not everything is clicking in gear, do you have
the grit to make sure that you can still get
the result even when not everything is firing going forward?

(01:01:34):
And that's what for me separates Cincinnati from some of
the other challengers for MLS Cup.

Speaker 9 (01:01:40):
What I've seen this year votes really well.

Speaker 16 (01:01:43):
I think when we're talking about what we call the
business end of the season, it's very hard enough to
see FC Cincinnati in the mix there because they have
all of the elements that create a championship team.

Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Two weeks ago, if you consider the possibility you'd be
calling FC Cincinnati versus Columbus, did you consider the possibility
you'd be calling a match with Kai Kamara in it?

Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
No.

Speaker 9 (01:02:06):
You know, I'm really good friends with Kai Kamara. We've
known each other twenty years.

Speaker 16 (01:02:09):
So I'm always messaging him and I'm like, come on,
what's going on, where's the next team? Where are you
going to be playing? And he's kept it quiet. He
didn't let me know. And then the announcement came and
I texted him. I says, you know, I'm calling the
Cincinnati Columbus game, and he said, I'll see you there.
So I'm excited to see him. I think, look, I
had the benefit of calling a lot of LAFC games
last year, and what he brought to the group was outstanding.

Speaker 9 (01:02:32):
He is a winner in terms of his work rate.

Speaker 16 (01:02:36):
If you're a young player and you look at this
guy and he's forty, he's actually older than my co
commentator moll I was t's mo, I'm like, why is
he still out there and you're not still out there.

Speaker 9 (01:02:46):
He's a model.

Speaker 16 (01:02:47):
In terms of everything that he does, keeping himself fit,
being ready. But forget about the age. When you watch
him out there and you're like, this guy can still
contribute on the field. I think this is a master
stroke pickupicularly coming into the summer games where you have
a lot going on.

Speaker 9 (01:03:04):
I love it.

Speaker 16 (01:03:04):
I'm excited to see Kai. He better have a jersey
for me this weekend because I want one. But I
think it's a great move from Battanham.

Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
You know, he got in the match last night and
you know he didn't look like he was forty years old,
I'll say that. So I'm excited to see what impact
he can make on this team as he further integrates
himself with his new teammates.

Speaker 16 (01:03:25):
Yeah, and I think what he brings to the locker
room through he's a leader, and some people when he
was in his younger days would say why, he's a
strong personality, and I always thought that was like silly.
They almost said it like it was a negative, And
I said, well, if you're a big personality coach, you
can handle strong personalities and opinions and feedback. That's exactly
what Pat Noonon is. He knew exactly what he was doing.

(01:03:46):
He went after Kai, and he's just another piece in
what I think FC Cincinnati feel is a championship puzzle
being put together right now.

Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
Hope. So Saturday, FC Cincinnati at Columbus, second of three

And at the PGA Championship, Ryan Girard currently the co
leader with Cam Davis at five hunder. Ryan Girard to
be the leader after the first round was at plus
twelve thousand, five hundred. Don't ask why I know that
I was talking about this before, and then Keith Costagett
called in and frankly, we connected with him a little

(01:07:29):
bit later than we wanted to, which is fine, that happens.
But anyway, I was talking about Trey Hendrickson, and I
was referencing Trey's reference to the Zach Taylor text. And
you know, this is part of the discourse now, because
like Trey mentioned that intentionally, and Trey maybe was provoked
by that text, and Trey is trying to play a
public play, a game of public negotiation with the Bengals,

(01:07:50):
and Trey might be coming from a place that you understand,
and that's fine, and maybe you're sympathetic to Trey. Maybe
you think the Bengals are mistreating him all that as well,
and good. Here's Trey referencing the text message where Zach,
I guess, informed Trey that hey, just FYI, if you
don't come to mandatory mini camp, they're going to find you.

Speaker 14 (01:08:13):
A little bit transpired between me and Zach. We've tried
to keep it as less at least out personal as possible,
but at some point in this process it becomes personal.

Speaker 6 (01:08:25):
You know, being sent.

Speaker 14 (01:08:27):
Thirty days before mandatory camp or however to any days
it is that if I don't show up, I will
be fined alludes to the fact that something won't get
done in that timeframe, and that with the lack of
communication post draft, made it evidently clear from my party,
meaning my wife, my son, my agent, right like we're

(01:08:50):
talking to a small group of people that I had
to inform that this might not work out, and that's unfortunate.
I don't think it was necessary. I think we all
should have hoped the best until proven otherwise. But through
that other things have transpired, you know, like the importance
of me being here in OTAs doesn't seem to be respected,

(01:09:13):
you know, And I think I've carried a lot of respect.
I don't mean to insinuate anything about anyone's character, but
that was disappointing. I think that's the word of the offseason.
I think we gave it. Are all under lose defense
and we did fall short. And that's about being a
man too, is standing up? So good question.

Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
All right, there you go. There's a Trey Hendrickson on Tuesday,
and I know it's a few days old, so just
a couple of things about that number one. I maybe
this bothers me more than it should. But if I'm
an NFL head coach, I should feel like I could
text my players. Sometimes I might have to have hard
conversations with them through text, ideally face to face, but

(01:09:53):
I should feel like what I send my players, players
who play for me, who under contract to play for
our organization, they're thus my players. The text that I
send them should be private. You might not like it.
We can have hard discussions. I'm led to believe Trey
and Zach have probably had some really hard discussions, but
putting out there in the public that's just weak. That's

(01:10:14):
doing your coach dirty, Like that's not cool. Also, I
don't know what the context here is. Here's what I'll guess. Zach,
just hey man, just FYI, Like, you're not here, and
you don't have to be here. It's voluntary. It can't
find you. But you know there is a mandatory miniicamp
and if you're thinking ahead like I'm gonna miss that,

(01:10:35):
don't be surprised if they find you. And by the way,
if Trey has an issue with that, take it up
with your union. They agree on these rules, teams are
allowed to have mandatory mini camps. The word mandatory means
if you don't show up, something's gonna happen. If we
have mandatory meetings at the radio station and I don't
show up, I better have a damn good excuse or
guess what something's gonna happen. Mandatory suggests if you don't show,

(01:10:59):
something's gonna happen. And Trey is under contract, and I'm
sure there's language in the contract alluding to what the
team can do if you don't show up to stuff
that's mandatory, I don't know. Maybe Trey knew that all along,
didn't need him a reminder. I kind of think Zach
is probably just dude, just that f why high if
you're not gonna come, If you're thinking ahead and you're

(01:11:20):
not gonna be here for what's mandatory, I can't find you.
The team can. They probably will, and they're within their
rights if they do. That's not a threatening message. It's
just dude, you know, like, if we had something here
that was mandatory, and I knew some folks that I
worked with were maybe not gonna show, I don't know, man,
I might go ahead, dude, if you don't show up,
guess what man. They may replace you, may do something

(01:11:43):
to you, could fire you. That's not threatening, it's just hey, man,
make sure you think, make sure you think about what
the consequences are gonna be. You could still go on
a cont on a quest to go get the money
in terms you want your contract, but if you don't
come to mandatory minicamp, they can find you. I don't
think there's anything wrong with that text message. I also

(01:12:04):
don't think that a text exchange between a player and
a coach should be made public. Maybe Zach Taylor is
not the most sympathetic figure. I kind of feel bad
for any NFL head coach who's kind of stuck in
the middle. And Zach say what you want about him.
I do think over the last couple of years, whether
it's been Jesse Bates or Trey Hendrickson or t Higgins
or Jamar Chase or hell go back to before Burrow,

(01:12:27):
AJ Green and Carlos Dunlap and any number of guys
who have had issue with management, Zach is stuck in
the middle, and I think he has always handled himself
very very well, very well professional, sometimes with humor. He's
in a tough spot. I think Trey Hendrickson owed, Zach, hey,
you texted me. I don't like the contents of it.

(01:12:49):
We're not going to make it public. I just he
could have issue with Katie Blackburn saying, which she said honestly,
about how hey, you just got to be happy with
your Yeah, it's fine. Maybe Katie shouldn't have said that.
I kind of feel like she answered a question honestly
and fairly, but taking something that should be like, I

(01:13:12):
don't know, man, if I'm Zach Taylor, I'm thinking, all right,
I'm done texting Trey Hendrickson, Like what's next from one
of his teammates, Like, dude, really, so if I text
just something you don't like related to your contract, you
might leak it to the media, not even leak it,
tell everybody. So if Trey used that on Tuesday to

(01:13:33):
try to, I don't know, get the public on his side,
my guy lost me. There. You did your coach dirty. Frankly,
the next step should be a public apology. You know what.
I should not have made a text conversation between my
coach and me public. That is really really weak. So, like,

(01:13:53):
you know, I don't take sides in these things. My
side is I want the Bengals to win. I want
the Bengals to do it's right by them. He certainly
won Trey to be on the team this year. I
obviously could see merit in the Bengals and Tray continuing
their relationship. I do understand not wanting to give him
top market dollar because he's likely to not give the
Bengals better seasons than what he already has. But the

(01:14:14):
market has changed. We'll see. But like, all right, you know,
you put that stuff out there. You tell the world
what your coach texted you. I think that is weak.
So you're trying to gain some some public favor, trying
to convey people, trying to convince people. You failed when
you told us what your coach texted you. At least

(01:14:36):

Let's be honest, man, Okay, once we get to mid May,
the weather starts to break. It legitimately feels like somewhere
outside today and anybody working on front and if they're

(01:16:02):
there on Friday, they're going through the motions. I won't

The current National League Central leader. I was just listening
to the tail end of Brenneman and Jones there where

(01:17:08):
they were breaking down the division. The Chicago Cubs aren't great,
but they are on pace to win ninety two games,
So this is maybe not the best way to do this.
In fact, it probably is not. But I always look
at the team that is leading the division, not so much.
How many games back are the Reds or any team
that's up for discussion, but can they exceed their current pace?

(01:17:32):
Right now? The Cubs are on pace to win ninety
two games. The Reds are after today's victory twenty one
and twenty four. So the Reds are going to have
to go seventy one and forty six the rest of
the way to reach ninety two wins. Will they win
ninety two games? Vote now at Mueger that's like six

(01:17:57):
o' eight baseball the rest of the way. But I
think it's a fair question, like it was not now
two years ago. But you know, kind of mid June
last two years ago, where the Reds one twelve in
a row and you know, spent four or five weeks
really playing well and catapulted into the race. They were
in first place on August second, finished on the outside

(01:18:20):
looking in, but got to game one sixty one and
yet the beginning of the season caught up to that team,
the beginning of the season, how they played, and the
beginning of the season quite frankly, who they didn't bring up,
who they didn't call up. And so you might argue, well,
all right, this team has a run like that in them.
They could do what the Cardinals have done recently. Fine,
but how much longer can they go before they go

(01:18:44):
on that run? How much longer could they go before
whatever they do is offset? But what they haven't done
early in the season. And look, man, this other one
to me, maybe this is just me the Trey Hendrickson question.
Trey Hendrickson discussing text between him and his team's head coach,
Week as hell or oh well vote now and again
like as it relates to getting a deal done, maybe

(01:19:08):
that is not a factor at all. I just if
you're using the media to appeal to the public, all right,
fine that I get to judge you by the stuff
you put out in the public, and what he put
it out in the public, to me should be private.
So vote now On Twitter at Moweger, we have been
busy with guests and other stuff today, so I appreciate
those of you who have called in, who are waiting patiently,

(01:19:31):
starting with Jim and Westchester. Jim, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 17 (01:19:35):
Hey, Moe, Hey, you know what I would like to
say to Trey Hendrick is this honor your contract. Your
agent negotiated that you have one year left to go
on it. Honor your contract. And yes, I have a
problem with him using the tactic that he did, which
was releasing you know, personal information in order to do that.

(01:19:59):
You know, if you know, I like him as a player.
I think he's really really solid. I think he adds
a lot to the team. But the reality of it is,
he agreed to that contract.

Speaker 6 (01:20:11):
You know.

Speaker 17 (01:20:11):
And the thing of it is, he is still under contract.
It's not like he's not. He's under contract. And that's
the thing that he better consider. You know, is he
going to walk away from you know, eighteen million dollars
or you know, whatever his current status is. I don't
think he is. But he's only going to you know,
he's only going to jeopardize the team standing. The reality

(01:20:35):
of it is, this is a collective bargaining issue. You know,
there's a salary cap, there's a number of other things involved.
The team is looking down the road at what the
cap space is doing. I'm sure this isn't just a
once and a you know, you know, off season type thing.
This is something that's very, very important and he has
to understand that, and he should have understood that when

(01:20:58):
he signed the contract in the first place.

Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
You know, I've seen people who have suggested, well, the
Bengals should have anticipated the market for edge rushers changing.
Can I say the same thing about Trey Hendrickson that
he should have seen potentially the market for edge rushers changing.
He had to know it that at some point Max
Crosby's going to be up for an extension. He could
reset the market. Maybe down the road, Miles Garrett is

(01:21:21):
going to want a new contract, like you can't. You
could say that about the Bengals and go, look, they
should have anticipated the market was going to change and
they should have gotten out in front of this. As
it relates to Trey, that's fine. But if I could
say that about the Bengals, at least Trey Hendrickson's agent
should have said to him, look, man, the market may change.
Are you sure you want to be stuck with a

(01:21:41):
contract that you can't get out of for one more
year when it changes.

Speaker 17 (01:21:46):
Exactly. And I think this goes a little.

Speaker 6 (01:21:49):
Bit deeper too.

Speaker 17 (01:21:50):
You know, these guys are looking around the league at
what other players are making and they're trying to understand
where I should be well. But that comes next year
when his contract is up, not when he's finishing out
to the last year of the contract he already signed.

Speaker 2 (01:22:08):
Yeah, you know what's interesting to me, Jim, thank you
for your patient Sam for the phone call. What's interesting
to me is we often credit organizations for getting great
value out of contracts, like I think the Reds deserve
a lot of credit for what they've done with Hunter Green.
Hunter Green this year, You've heard me say this before,
is the eighty second highest paid pitcher in the sport,

(01:22:31):
eighty second highest paid starting pitcher in the sport. Obviously,
he's hurt right now, but he has not pitched like
the eighty second best pitcher in the sport. Over his
last thirty starts, He's been one of the best three
or four pitchers in the sport. He's an insanely good bargain.
Next year, Hunter Green is going to get a two
million dollar raise. Now if he was not under contract

(01:22:53):
and arbitration eligible, he would probably get much more than
a two million dollar raise next year. But we give
the Reds credit. They're getting great value out of Hunter Green,
and man, maybe this is a part of Hunter Green
is like dude, I shouldn't have signed that deal. I should,
but he did. And so you give the Reds credit

(01:23:13):
for Hey, they're getting awesome value. Like we credit companies
for doing this all the time, right, They're getting a
lot of value out of employees that you know, might
not be making as much as they could get somewhere else.
Like we do that in sports all the time until
it comes to a team that's got a stingy rep
And the Bengals have earned much of what their reputation is.
But Trey Hendrickson, I saw Joe Goodberry to just tweet

(01:23:36):
this out a few minutes ago, or at least I
saw it a few minutes ago. Trey Hendrickson is going
to be the twentieth highest paid defensive end in twenty
twenty five. He's obviously not the twentieth best defensive end.
He's not, right, So that's great value. So one is
going to argue, well, the Bengals are being stingy. The
Bengals are being cheap, The Bengals are being short sighted,

(01:23:56):
and some of that applies I think the short sightedness
stick if you want to throw that at the Bengals
as a criticism. But they do they get credit for Hey,
you know what, they get a great player who's in
working for under an insanely team friendly deal like we
used to do this with Andy Dalton. Now, Trey Hendrickson

(01:24:19):
is better at his job than Andy Dalton was at his.
But the beauty of the Andy Dalton contract was Andy
Dalton's like the twenty first twenty year to year twenty first,
twenty second, twenty twenty third highest paid quarterback in the NFL. Now,
while he was never a top five guy, he was
also not in the twenties. But the Bengals got a
lot of credit. Well run organization got the Andy Dalton

(01:24:40):
deal done. They have a lot of flexibility. They can
get out of the contract, and they get a good quarterback,
not a great quarterback, but a good quarterback at what
is a relative bargain. That's good work by the Bengals.
I can't apply that to Trey. And if you want
to say, well the Bengals, you know they made some
promises because I made this argument on Monday, Bengals maybe

(01:25:00):
made some assurances to Trey, Hey, if you go have
a great year, you know we'll give you even more.
And then the market changed, and markets changed, and that
affects decision making, right. Also, the t Higgins thing changed
things like, yeah, t Higgins was not going to be
on the books for twenty twenty six, now he is.
T Higgins wasn't going to be on the bucks for
twenty twenty five. Now he has, So some things change.

(01:25:22):
The argument is the Bengals could have anticipated that better.
Trey Hendrickson couldn't have anticipated that better. Right, you mean
to tell me that, Hey, I got Max Crosby coming up,
I got Miles Garrett coming up down the road. Who
knows what happens when Aiden Hutchinson is due for a
contract extent to with the Detroit Lions. It kind of

(01:25:45):
goes both ways. But you know he is under contract.
I actually do. And I ran this past Paul and
he didn't buy it as much. So we'll see. Like
we said with Jamar last year, as much as this
is going to dominate the conversation, And that's not me
saying it, that's Trey Hendrickson telling us it. I mean

(01:26:06):
he's gonna be a distraction. That was his announcement essentially
on Tuesday. The only question that really matters as it
relates to the Bengals, who are I would imagine have
legitimate hopes to win the title this year? Can they
get off to a great start? It's going to be
one of the questions. And then is Trey Hendrickson gonna

(01:26:29):
be willing to miss games? And this is something we
discussed with Jesse Bates a few years ago. We've discussed
it as it relates to t Higgins. We certainly discussed
it as it related to Jamar Chase last year. And
I said this about Jamar, is Jamar willing to miss games?
If not, these are just two sides staring at each other.
It's a staring contest. So is Trey Hendrickson willing to

(01:26:50):
miss games and forego the money that comes with him?
And maybe the answer is no. I just think that
when someone does different things, you have to look at
them a little bit differently. Trey Hendrickson is doing things differently.
May not work, may work, may cast him as a villain,
may cast him as a hero. You may love it.

(01:27:11):
You may hate it, but Trey Hendrickson is doing things differently.
Jamar Chase wasn't standing there at voluntary practices last year
making it known that he wants a deal while his
teammates practice just a few feet away, and Jesse Bates
didn't do that. T Higgins hasn't done that. No player
that I could ever recall has ever done that. So

(01:27:32):
when someone's doing things different, you have to assume their
thinking is different. So I actually do believe that there's
a chance that Trey Hendrickson, if push comes to shove
September the Seven, says I'm not playing, And you know
I wouldn't do that. It's dumb to voluntary give up

(01:27:54):
the kind of money you get per game. I think
that's an insane amount of money to just effectively give
away on fire. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't recommend
doing it. Obviously, as a fan of the team, I
want him out there because they're better with him. But
I actually take the threat more seriously than I have
with other players. I still believe at the end of

(01:28:15):
the day, he's gonna say screw it. I'm not going
to give up that kind of money. I'm gonna play,
but I do because this is a this is a
guy who just feels and seems to be wired a
little bit different. I take it a little bit more seriously.
The threat that he'll decide to miss a game or two,
and then if he misses the first one, the question
becomes how many more will he miss? I asked this

(01:28:36):
on Twitter on Tuesday. Do you believe Trey is really
willing to miss games during the regular season? Fifty two
point seven percent said no. But I've asked that question
about other players and the numbers are far heavier, more tilted,
which is poor grammar by me, but far more tilted
toward no than yes. We'll see. We'll see nineteen after

(01:28:59):
five o'clock at the end of I mean, I'm amused
by this, and I don't know why this amuses me
more than the others. But Trey on Tuesday, standing there
in his golf attire with his teammates practicing just a
few feet away, grand standing for twenty five minutes. I
don't know why I was amused by it, as I

(01:29:21):
was and am but I am five point three seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty is our phone number? Uh? Really quick? And
then we got to get get a break in. A

No, you can't.

Speaker 6 (01:32:28):
Hey, mo.

Speaker 18 (01:32:29):
I heard Tracy and Marty talking a few seconds ago
about batting coaches, the number that the Reds have gone
through and all that. Yeah, And you know, I never
really thought that that really had a big impact, because

(01:32:49):
I think most of the guys in the major leagues
now kind of kind of know how to hit. And
I'm wondering, how much of a change can you make?

Speaker 5 (01:33:00):
And then this.

Speaker 18 (01:33:01):
Year the Cardinals signed a guy named Brant Brown who
has done an amazing job with most of their guys,
and the two people he hasn't really had much in
an impact on are Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker, who

(01:33:22):
are probably two of the more important guys.

Speaker 6 (01:33:24):
In their lineup.

Speaker 18 (01:33:26):
And I'm just I don't know, I'm kind of perplexed
that how much impact batting coaches have to a guy
who's in the major league.

Speaker 2 (01:33:37):
Well, I think they can have an impact. I mean,
you know, look in every sport, there's a every NFL
team has a position coach. Right now, obviously you're installing
offenses and watching tape and scoutting opponents and all that
sort of stuff, but you are helping them continue to
work at their craft. And I think regardless of how

(01:33:59):
accomplished a of a big league hitter you are, if
you have someone who you connect with and who's good
at teaching and communicating and they can help you work
on your craft, then there's value in the hitting coach.
I think the point that was made by Tracy and
the segment was the Reds have had did he say seven?
What seven hitting coaches in eight years? I think the

(01:34:22):
issue there isn't the actual hitting coaches. There's a bit
of a lack of maybe a lack of continuity, a
lack of overarching philosophy because you're constantly changing hitting coaches.
But I mean, I would imagine for some hitters a
hitting coach can have an impact. I would imagine in
some cases a guy who's you know, a hitting coach
might really help one player on the team and might

(01:34:43):
not necessarily connect with another player on the team. I
always feel like the hitting coach is a scapegoat for
a team that collectively isn't hitting all that much. I
don't think the Reds would be an overall better offensive
team if they had a better hitting coach. I do think, though,
that you could wander or with some of these guys,
would they help, would they benefit from somebody else, or

(01:35:05):
benefit at least from continuity? I don't know the answer,
but no, I mean I don't think a team. I
don't think if you look at the Reds over the
last however many years, ten years, what's the biggest reason
why they haven't won, it ain't because of the hitting coach.

Speaker 6 (01:35:20):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
Does that makes sense?

Speaker 5 (01:35:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 18 (01:35:23):
Yeah, it absolutely does. And I tend to agree with
what you said there. I think I think for these guys,
who are, you know, at the highest level they can
actually be at in professional baseball. I mean, you either
know how to hit at this point or you don't.
And maybe maybe they can pick up something that a

(01:35:46):
guy who's in a swamp is doing that might help him.
But it to me is like I tend to agree
with what you said. It's almost the scapegoat position.

Speaker 2 (01:36:00):
Yeah. I can't tell you how many times Bob I
got to hit my break there. Thank you for the folks.
I can't tell you how many times over the last we've
been doing the show for seventeen years, I've heard someone mentioned, well,
they need a new hitting coach. I don't think there's
been a position in the organization where there's been more
turnover than hitting coach. Have the results gotten dramatically better?

Broncos were a playoff team last season, edging out the

(01:37:42):
Bengals for the AFC's final spot, and expectations for the

is Denver's defense, a unit that led the NFL in

little bit different, kind of focusing on former Bengals that
turned broadcasters so kind of headlining Bob Trumpy, you know.
And I don't know if people realize that when Trump

(01:39:20):
he retired, he was the lead analyst for NBC's football
coverage and he was also in the eighteenth power on
NBC's golf coverage, so we got some great stories. He's
not that good of a golfer, and of course.

Speaker 2 (01:39:37):
You know, yeah he was.

Speaker 5 (01:39:38):
He was.

Speaker 2 (01:39:38):
Also he was also a decent radio host.

Speaker 6 (01:39:42):
Yeah he was.

Speaker 5 (01:39:42):
I think he was. He had the first call in show,
you know, supply in fact, he started when he was playing.
That was the big battle with Paul Brown. He wanted
to do it when he was still playing. Paul told
he couldn't bust it. Well, yes I can, and he
did it. And as I remember, his first guest was me.
He said, Ken, you got to do it. You're the

(01:40:03):
only one they can't touch. So I was his first
guest before he started over at l W. But then
and then boomber Siason coming in, you know, of course
he went right from playing to Monday night football and
got how many years has he been with CBS, you
know before this the last year, but you know he's

(01:40:25):
going to come in. He's broadcasting nineteen Super Bowls.

Speaker 6 (01:40:28):
If you can believe that incredible?

Speaker 5 (01:40:30):
Uh, Dave Lapham, of course, you know, my roommate knows
more about me than most people, so I'm a little
bit nervous about this one.

Speaker 3 (01:40:39):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (01:40:39):
And Solomon Wilcotts, who had a great career with with
CBS and Sky Sports and he's still broadcasting on Serious
XM on NFL Radio. So it's a it's a fun day.
We had a great time last year with it. You know,
Ted Carris was there, and Mary Brenneman and Zach Taylor
and uh, you know, I always said, say, you know,
these are schedule to appear because Boomer Boomer was supposed

(01:41:04):
to come in last year and I get a call
at noon and he said, Kenny, all my fights are
canceled because of weather out of New York. So we're
hoping for good weather this year.

Speaker 2 (01:41:16):
Yeah, let's hope. So all right, so you have all
of these men, everybody there obviously that you know, and
then the event itself, what happens, Well.

Speaker 5 (01:41:26):
You know, it's it's drinks, it's dinner. And one of
the things, we've got a great live auction. I've got
an original seatback from Riverfront Stadium signed by all the
league MVPs that played in it. So obviously Boomer and
I for football, and Bench Morgan, Rose, Foster and Larkin
for baseball. We've got a a canvas print of a

(01:41:53):
painting of Boomer, Joe, Burrow and I that we've all signed.

Speaker 6 (01:41:57):
Wow, We've got.

Speaker 5 (01:42:00):
Two opening day tickets for all the Broadway Series shows
at the Aaronoff Center in the Orchestra section. And I
think that I'm gonna be able to finagle a suite
at a Reds game, and you know, guys like maybe
Doug Flynn might.

Speaker 6 (01:42:15):
Show up there and me to kind of host that
deal too.

Speaker 5 (01:42:18):
So that's We've got some really unique stuff that we're
gonna be autographing and a couple of very exclusive jerseys
that we're gonna be auctioning off too. So I'm still
waiting for the final results on those.

Speaker 2 (01:42:30):
All right, So this is gonna be Friday night, June
sixth at the hard Rock Casino downtown. Where can folks
go to get tickets?

Speaker 5 (01:42:39):
If you go to Kenanders Alliance dot org. It'll tell
you all about it how you can buy tickets there.
But like I say, it was, it really is a fun,
fun night.

Speaker 2 (01:42:50):
And no, it sounds like it and the cool thing
is and you and I have talked about the Ken
Anderson Alliance many many times. It funds the work you
guys do, which is so important.

Speaker 5 (01:43:01):
Well, I tell you what, you know, we're trying to
make the lies of adults with developmental and innstual disabilities better.
And we've got a great staff out there and between
our adult day care services, our music's therapy, our engage
outing is our job training, job placement, we're servicing about
three hundred adults a week and so very proud of

(01:43:23):
the things that we get accomplished, you know there, And
and I, like I say, it's we're just trying to.

Speaker 6 (01:43:30):
Make somewhat of a difference.

Speaker 2 (01:43:31):
Friday Night, June sixth, hard Rock Casino, Ken and Friends.
It sounds like an unbelievable evening. Everything benefits the Ken
Anderson Alliance. Have you been Have you been following the
ups and downs of the Bengals off season?

Speaker 6 (01:43:47):
Yes, I have, so.

Speaker 5 (01:43:53):
You know, it's we don't know anything until they put
on pads. Yeah, you know, it's I just all that,
you know. I've been down there a couple of times
and talking to the coaches that they're very excited about
the way that the draft went for them, So I
give them the benefit of they know a hell of
a lot more about it than I do, you know.
And I think the thing that's a little unsettling right now,

(01:44:16):
it's the Trey Hendrickson thing and how this has turned
out where he he's got to you know, show up,
you know, at practice to talk to the media.

Speaker 2 (01:44:23):
Yeah. Can can you imagine somebody doing that in your day?

Speaker 5 (01:44:28):
You wouldn't be around very long.

Speaker 6 (01:44:30):
I don't think, I know, I know one.

Speaker 5 (01:44:35):
Thing we wouldn't have anybody say that they wouldn't play
without a new contract. It won't make that much money.

Speaker 2 (01:44:39):
Anyway, that was that was certainly a support. Yeah, maybe
Trey's got a lot of free time now, maybe he
can come to Ken and Friends.

Speaker 6 (01:44:50):
What you know.

Speaker 5 (01:44:51):
We'll have to see what goes on there. But he's
but he didn't fit into this year's team.

Speaker 6 (01:44:55):
He's not a broadcaster.

Speaker 5 (01:44:56):
Well, if he's doing and i'd have you, but you
never for the Bengal.

Speaker 2 (01:45:00):
Play for the Bengals. Yeah, yeah, that's fine.

Speaker 5 (01:45:03):
Well maybe, and I must speaking of that, I must
say I went down to Smoke Justice to see you
for the the schedule reveal last night, and and you
weren't there.

Speaker 2 (01:45:13):
I was thought, you know, we we had you know,
we had a lot going on because we had Pete
Rose night, and so I was at the Holy Grail
and then I had to do extra innings because Lance
was at the Lance McAllister and Tony were at the
schedule show. So I missed you. I would have been
that'd been That'd have been cool to see you. We
could have had a cold one.

Speaker 5 (01:45:31):
Well, yeah, and I owe you a couple by the way,
I think.

Speaker 6 (01:45:33):
But yes, you know the reason.

Speaker 5 (01:45:34):
I actually went down there.

Speaker 6 (01:45:35):
It was brought to you by you know, a door,
that's right.

Speaker 5 (01:45:38):
And uh, I was gonna go down there and try
to drink on Bill Webbert he wasn't there either.

Speaker 2 (01:45:42):
What the so you had to buy your own beer?

Speaker 17 (01:45:45):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:45:45):
I did.

Speaker 2 (01:45:45):
Wait a minute, Ken Anderson walks into Smoke Justice, which
had I'm sure a bunch of Bengals fans and and
the guys got to pay for his own drinks.

Speaker 5 (01:45:53):
Well, and and Richard Dick Lenioner was there too.

Speaker 2 (01:45:56):
And you still had to pay for yourn drinks.

Speaker 5 (01:45:58):
Well that's exactly be right, But you know that's that's
the way things go.

Speaker 6 (01:46:03):
So well.

Speaker 2 (01:46:04):
I understand you do owe me a few beers because
I won one of your contest once, but I just
I enjoy holding that over your head as much as
I'll actually enjoy having the beers.

Speaker 6 (01:46:14):
We do have to get that done though, soon we do.

Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Ken Andersonalliance dot org. June sixth A Friday night, hard
Rock Casino Downtown Ken Anderson, Boomera Size and Dave Lapp
and Bob Trumpy, Solomon Wilcotts and a whole lot of fun,
lots of stories, great food. Should be a great night
and obviously an unbelievable cause. It's always an honor to
have you man. Thank you so much, the.

Speaker 5 (01:46:36):
Pleasures someone And I can't wait to ask Boomer what
he really thought when the Bengals drafted me about how
quick that he was going to replace me. You know,
I got it.

Speaker 6 (01:46:45):
We got to get to the bottom.

Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
We do have to get to the bottom of night question.
All right, Well, it should be an awesome night. Thank
you as.

Speaker 6 (01:46:53):
Always, thank you, but I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (01:46:56):
That is awesome, Ken Anderson again, go to what Ken
Anderson Alliance dot. Chad Brendle next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 8 (01:47:07):
From the UC Health Traffic Center. Uce Health as expert
traumacare focusing on prevention, treating injuries, and supporting long term
recovery and rehabilitation. Learn more at UCHealth dot com. Center
lane remains blocked off from a disabled vehicle northbound seventy
five after Mitchell accident. Now cleared out on eastbound two

(01:47:28):
seventy five at Madison Pike and on Highway forty eight.
It's an accident at Deer Shadow Road that is affecting
both the north and southbound side. I'm at Ezelik with traffic.

Speaker 2 (01:47:38):
So you got another big commit today. Boba Miller, a
post player averaged on nearly eleven and a half at
FAU last year by many accounts, are really good get
for Wes Miller during what has been a really productive offseason.
And so I wanted the skinny so to speak from
our friend Chad Brendel Bearcat Journal dot com, who's been

(01:47:58):
streaming about this for the last like ninety minutes and
who's also hosting this show tomorrow because I'm taking off.
I appreciate you joining us on short notice. What's going on.

Speaker 3 (01:48:08):
I just you know, I'm looking for ways to see
if I can set the talking record.

Speaker 6 (01:48:12):
This week.

Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
Understandable. All right, you've you've been busy, so I appreciate
you doing this, and I know you're going to be
no problem sitting in here tomorrow. How good is Baba Miller.

Speaker 3 (01:48:26):
Got a chance to be really good and especially just
potentially a really good fit for what this roster was lacking,
which is, you know, somebody that can give you high
end minutes at the four. I think we all feel
pretty good about the guard spots, Gessel, James Dade, Thomas
kirkrisa since here, Harris, and I think people forget got

(01:48:51):
a really good freshman guard coming in in Keisha Ontillery,
and you got you know, five guys for those two spots.
Seanab I have and and Harris can slide down and
play a little bit of three down Celestein as a
combo three four that they added from Baylor and then
loosed off at cham and Jalen Haynes at the five.

(01:49:14):
But you didn't really have that what's the answer at
the four? And you go out and you get Bobon Miller,
who was one of the better players in the American Conference,
started his career at Florida State. A lot of NBA
teams have him on their radar. He's not quite there yet,
but he has the talent and the ability. And you know,

(01:49:34):
I look at this roster and think, man, last year,
there was a concern that like there were too many
duplicate parts, there were too many guys that were kind
of the same guy. I don't look at this roster
and get that sense at all.

Speaker 2 (01:49:47):
Yeah, I think last year. I think last year felt
more like an accumulation of talent. This year feels like
a roster build.

Speaker 3 (01:49:56):
I would agree with that, and you would hope that
was the case when you you hire a general manager
that's highly respected in the sport. Has spent time with
the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were the best team in
the regular season in the NBA in part because of
their roster construction. Like that's why you go get Corey
Evans to give you instead of just going out and

(01:50:19):
working your contacts and getting the most talent you can get,
Let's let's build a roster that makes a little bit
more sense in how we want to play. And you know,
I had Corey on a couple of weeks ago, and
he talked about processing was a big thing. He talked
about processing offense, heading players that didn't, you know, stand

(01:50:42):
on the wing, catch the ball and hold it for
three seconds and allow the defense to reset. Guys that
can catch it and make a decision are they going
to drive? Are they gonna shoot? Are they going to
pay ass? And do it quickly? And I think bobon
Miller is another really good piece that you know you're
not going to get the I've been calling at this

(01:51:02):
for a couple of weeks. It's probably stupid that I
like it. When a guy catches the ball, you're not
going to get the loading screen like a little loading icon.
And I think that's gonna should help. You know, you
saw it, MO when in those games last year where
the ball did move with some purpose, they looked insanely
better as a team offensively. So you hope now you

(01:51:24):
have more guys that can allow you.

Speaker 6 (01:51:26):
To do that.

Speaker 2 (01:51:28):
Can can they with what they have? Can they play
multiple styles? Like could they play big? Could they have
one big on the floor? I mean, can they sort
of adjust based on who they're playing?

Speaker 5 (01:51:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:51:38):
I think so.

Speaker 3 (01:51:39):
I mean, you know, potentially, like you could put two
of the guards Seanabayev, the five star freshman that's incoming,
and like a Jalen Cellestine at the four paired with
a Bob a Miller paired with a Jalen Haynes and
play for out. We have one guy that you know,

(01:51:59):
you used to say screens and post up and a
guy like Haynes, and then you know, I think they
are going to have to You're gonna see Chom so.
I think it's the best player of this team. I
don't think that's a shocking revelation, but you know, you're
gonna have another big next to him, potentially with Haynes,
potentially with Miller, where you can play big at times,

(01:52:23):
and there's even you could play you know, Teleschen, Haynes
and Charm together and go six eight six nine, seven
foot Miller and Charm together seven foot, seven foot two.
There is the ability to play some different styles.

Speaker 2 (01:52:42):
Are they done? Are they done? Or they have room
for more? So, yeah, you think this is it.

Speaker 3 (01:52:48):
I'm going into the you know, after they got mossed
off a chom the thought was like either one big
swing or like two medium swings in terms of how
much money they had left. I consider this a big swing.
So and if you think about him, though, you've got
the six transfer portal guys, the four guys returning, and

(01:53:10):
the two incoming freshmen. You've got twelve guys, and ten
eleven of them are expecting to play significant minutes. I
don't know how you fit the thirteenth guy in and
keep people happy if there are additional guys added. I
think it's more Scout team guys, practice guys back of
the roster, because remember they expanded the roster limits to

(01:53:34):
fifteen and there's no more walk on So if you're
gonna have practice guys, you're gonna need to put them
on scholarship. I think you can see that with a
couple of the remaining spots. But in terms of guys
you expect to contribute, I think they're done.

Speaker 2 (01:53:49):
All right, awesome stuff, have fun tomorrow. I gotta go.
Thanks so much, thanks sir, a great weekend. Chad Brenda
