Speaker 1 (00:00):
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Here we go a little bit of a dreary Friday
in the Queens City. But that's all right. We got
you covered. Chad Brindle and for Mogar on the Boeggar Show.

(00:36):
We had a lot going on today, a lot going
on today. Reds in action. Up to nothing in the
bottom of the third over the Chicago Cubs. Cubs with
a runner on second and two outs, Andrew Abbot looking

(01:02):
good so far. Then the Reds just get out of
the inning. Abbot has gone three. He's given up one hit,
one walk, four strikeouts in those three innings, no runs.
Friedel TJ. Friedel leads off the game with a home
run for the Reds first run, and then you get

(01:24):
a double from Elie de la Cruz. You get a
double from Gavin Lux that brings Ellie home, gives the
Reds a two to nothing lead as we head into
the fourth inning, and then an nced double A tournament
baseball action the Batcats the Cincinnati Bearcats taking on wake Forest.

(01:52):
They're in Knoxville, the Knoxville Regional opening Round, first game
of the Regional. Cincinnati comes out hot. They get two
in the first, they get six in the second that
put them up eight to nothing. Wakes has tried to
mount a little bit of a comeback, but the Bearcats

(02:13):
get another two on a home run in the top
of the fifth. We are in the bottom of the
fifth right now, Cincinnati leading wake Forest ten to four.
This being of course a to and out tournament. Getting
that first win in the regional is massive, still a

(02:39):
long way to go, far from a sure thing, especially
in this park that hosts the Tennessee Volunteers. It is
a bandbox, it is three twenty down the lines, it
is three ninety to straightaway center. Doesn't take a whole

(03:01):
lot of power to thump one out of this ballpark.
So the Bearcats need to not only continue pitching well,
but they need to do what they do, which is
put pressure on the opposing staff, on the opposing defense.
It leads to mistakes. We saw that early in the

(03:22):
game as they another home run for wake Forest. As
it's now ten to five, and that's what I'm talking
about with this ballpark. Looked like what should have been
probably a routine flyout to rights center and it gets out.

(03:46):
Jack Winne with the home run for wake Forest. So
it's now ten to five. In the bottom of the fifth.
As Cincinnati looks to hang on, we will keep you
abreast of that as the day goes on. It should
be UH should be exciting. That's no lead is safe

(04:07):
in this ballpark, no UH, no chance to let up
as the other team can can put together much much
like we saw. I went into UH the store to
get a drink. On my way here, it was I
think three to nothing Cincinnati at the time. By the
time I went into the store, got a drink, paid,

(04:29):
got back into my car, it was eight nothing Cincinnati.
That's how fast things can happen at this ballpark in Knoxville.
So Bischelball. If you're not familiar it is. It's a
lot of fun. They they're aggressive, they steal bases, they bunt,
they suicide squeeze, They've got some pop UH. It's a

(04:53):
it's a fun lineup to watch and we'll see if
they can hang on to UH to get things done
here this afternoon and get started off with a win
in the regional and a much greater odds of making
it to a super regional. Winning the region, making it

(05:14):
to a super regional, got a lot else to get
to as well. We will we'll do some counter programming
here early in the show with the Reds and the
Bearcats both actively playing right now. A lot of reports
out yesterday on Trey Hendrickson being quote unquote extremely dug in,

(05:37):
to the point that he is willing to miss games,
even as far as missing the whole season, which doesn't
make a whole lot of sense to me. Austin had
a guest on at in the early stages of Sincy
three to sixty today that explained, if Trey Hendrickson misses

(06:03):
ten games, his contract rolls over and he's a Bengal
again next year, so he can be as dug in
as he wants. But if his intention is to end
his Cincinnati Bengals career sitting out ten games is it's

(06:29):
not the way to do it for Trey Hendrickson. I
still just wonder where is the guidance coming from here?
Where is the advice coming from We have talked about
this before. It's to a fault, I think at times.
But as an organization, the Bengals and the Brown family

(06:51):
very much value winning the negotiation. It's the opposite of
how they see like guards and lineback and safeties. They
don't value those positions. They do value winning the negotiation,
and I think if the reports are correct, if they've

(07:12):
offered Trey Hendrickson twenty eight million, I think that's a
more than fair offer for Trey Hendrickson at this stage
of his career, especially when you consider he's a specialist.
He's a very good specialist. But if you take out
the sacks season ago, Trey Hendrickson had seventeen tackles. One

(07:37):
tackle a game, it's seventeen sacks. Then he had seventeen
other tackles for the season. He's not a guy that's
going to help you in the run game. He's not
a guy that you're gonna see chasing down, you know,

(07:57):
a stretch play from the backside and making a stop
behind the line of scrimmage, or you know, stopping a
back before before he gets upfield and rips off a
big run. It's not who Trey Hendrickson is. But he
plays a premium position and he has a premium skill

(08:19):
in getting to the quarterback, and as such he's earned
quite a bit of money. But I think he is
overvaluing his position, his his negotiating leverage, I guess is

(08:43):
the best way to put it. The Bengals hold the
cards here. Trey Hendrickson asked for an extension, he got it.
Now he wants that's another one, and he doesn't like
what the Bengals have put on the table. That's on Trey.

(09:08):
He is under contract, he is not a free agent.
He does not have the leverage in this situation. The
Brown family, the Blackburn family are the ones with the
cards here. So if he wants to dig in, go ahead,

(09:31):
I guess, but I don't think it benefits Trey. It
doesn't benefit the Bengals to have him sitting out while
under contract. It's a lose lose situation for pretty much everybody.
And he continues to leak information to the media or

(09:51):
his agent or whoever on his side continues to leak
information to the media that he's dug in. And I
think we all know. The more that that message gets
out there, the more the Bengals are going to do
the same. They're gonna dig their heels in and say, fine,
don't play. They told Carson Palmer to go home, don't play.

(10:18):
Carson Palmer, number one overall pick in the draft, franchise quarterback.
The Bengals said, that's fine, you want to sit sit
you think Trey Hendrickson is going to be any different,
I certainly don't. Quick update on the Reds. Top of

(10:46):
the fourth, Will Benson singles, Tyler Stevenson homers. Red's now
up for nothing on the Cubs. After that, Jake Frailey walked,
Matt McLane singles, So the Reds have one out in
the top of the fourth, runners on first and second

(11:10):
with a four to nothing lead. Checking back in on
the Bearcats ten to five, Cincinnati up top of the sixth,
so that solo home run was all the damage Wake
Forest could muster in the bottom of the fifth, and
now he count outs five run lead for the Bearcats

(11:34):
twelve outs to go. Speaking of the Reds, we will
also discuss the Alexis Dias trade and the natural reaction
to say, why didn't they move him when his value

(11:55):
was the highest? Why did they hang on to him?
And then and eventually get to a situation where he
kind of fell off and going into his arbitration year
next year put the Reds in a situation where it
was probably best to move on. Looking back, of course,

(12:20):
now you look at it and wish you could have
moved him a little sooner. You could have moved him
for a little more value instead of a thirteenth round
pick from last year's draft that hadn't pitched outside of
the Arizona Instructional League. Two appearances, so you're far from

(12:45):
getting a sure thing. You're probably getting a relief pitcher
that won't be in the majors for three years. But
the Reds are not in a position to gamble trading
away an all star closer that was developed in house.

(13:12):
We want the Reds to be a serious organization. A
lot of times I don't think that they are. I
think they're content with exactly what we have seen this season.
Hover around five hundred, keep fans moderately interested, keep them
going to the ballpark through the summer, and by September

(13:34):
year five six games out of the wildcard race and
not really a factor, but hovered around five hundred. Kept
it interesting. Get to sit on these radio shows and
talk about up. They're three back, they're four back out

(13:54):
of the wild card. This week they made up two
games on first place, etcetera. Rinse repeat. They win three
of four, then they lose three. Uh, then they win
five in a row, then they lose six of seven.
That is the yo yo that this franchise is on.

(14:15):
And when you have a chance for a guy like
Alexis Diaz, who dominated for a while, when you have
a chance to maintain a homegrown talent like that, it's

(14:36):
it's very difficult and almost silly to trade that talent
away at the first sign of trouble. Now, unfortunately, this
one came back to bite them because Diaz lost his magic,
lost his stuff, and you had to move him for

(14:58):
what amounts to very And it's frustrating because you could
have moved him at the height of his powers. But
ultimately then you're just the Pittsburgh Pirates and all you
do is sell high, sell high, sell high, sell high.

(15:19):
What does that got in the Pirates? Nothing? Nothing. So
I'm not gonna say this team needs to be more
serious about winning at the major league level now and
then in the same breath say they should have traded
an all star closer when he had the most value

(15:43):
before he hit a rough patch. That's a that's not
a good faith argument, that's gaslighting the listeners. We'll also
talk some college football today. It's been a busy week

(16:05):
in college football world as we have these spring meetings
in the SEC, and we're hearing a lot from Greg Sanke,
the Commissioner of the SEC, and we're hearing a lot
from Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin and people in and
around SEC football. And then you're hearing from brett Or Mark,

(16:29):
and you're hearing some from the Big Ten and from
the ACC. And the future of college athletics, especially the
future of college football is in the balance, and the
winds are shifting. And the reason the winds are shifting,
if you've paid attention for the last oh, I don't know,

(16:52):
fifty years, is because the two entities at the top
that everybody thinks we'll just very smoothly and easily work together. Well,
as it turns out, they don't really like each other
all that much, and they're not all that interested in

(17:16):
doing things that help benefit the other's bottom line. The
SEC in the Big Ten don't like each other. This
notion that the SEC and the Big Ten are just
going to break off and do their own thing and
work in rhythm and harmony to build their own system,

(17:43):
I don't think you've been paying attention, and this week
it's just a little bit of a sign that I'm
right on this all right, just take a break more
after this the Maagger Show. Since that E's ESPN at fifteen.

Richard Skinner coming up here in just a minute. Let's
catch up with what's going on. Red's up four nothing,
top of the fifth, Andrew Abbott is dealing. He's given
up one hit and one walk, five strikeouts for Andrew Abbott,
who has his ERA down to one sixty one on

(19:07):
the season. That's pretty good, pretty good. Fridol has a
home run for the Reds leading off the game, and
in the top of the fourth, Tyler Stevenson hits a
two run home run. In between that, Gavin Lux double
scores Elie de la Cruz and the Reds lead four

(19:29):
to nothing. They are in the top of the fifth
and the Cincinnati Bearcats, playing in the Knoxville Regional playing
Wake Forest, a traditional baseball strong strong program, and the
Bearcats are up ten to five. Top of the seventh.

(19:52):
Hat tip to Nathan Taylor, got a big ground ball
out to end the sixth inning with a runner on third.
Was up to I think one hundred and eighteen pitches,
so that is It's probably the last we'll see of Taylor,
but he got the bear catch through six and gets
them into the seventh inning with a five run lead.

(20:14):
Let's take a break. We'll talk to Richard Skinner from

the uh more than fitting intro song for the OG
none other than Local twelve Zone Richard Skinner Skenny, how

(21:20):
the heck are you?

Speaker 1 (21:22):
I'm good.

Speaker 4 (21:23):
Just came back from a week in Orlando visiting my
my youngest daughter, and I can't say I feel refreshed
and ready to go walk in Disney parks all the time.

Speaker 5 (21:32):
But I'm ready to go.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Yeah. Did she take you down in golf like she's
better than you? Right?

Speaker 4 (21:37):
No, the oldest is better, the youngest is not. But
we usually do. But we decided not to lug the
clubs around this time, so we actually went to We
went and played a Tiger Woods putt putt course one day,
and of course we did it in the heat of
the day at ninety five degrees. We're not the brightest bulbs.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
It is what it is skinny. I gotta ask you,
seem like you would be a Jordan Bischel guy.

Speaker 4 (22:01):
I like Jordan Bischel, and I'm just at the moment,
I keep by, keep refreshing the score to picture that
they're not furgging it away a little bit. But no,
I like Jordan Bischel. Yeah, what a start to get
off to an eight and nothing lead. Then all of
a sudden I looked up was eight to four, and
now what it's I think it's ten to five when
you call me ten to five, top seven the top
of the seventh. Yeah, so uh, you know in college
baseball and v volvers, you know, I mean, you get
somebody come out of the bullpen that's op throwing strikes,

(22:23):
things can go haywires. So you see, you see certainly
needs to place some man on here.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
And it's a ballpark where you go the you know,
the SEC. They got a way to do this, skinny,
three twenty down the lines, three to ninety to straightaway center.
I mean Cupcast Park is bigger than that, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (22:39):
It's close.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
I know that if I do a lot of Saint
Xavier games and Saint Davier's dimensions, they don't have power
alley numbers, but they are literally three twenty down the
line and three eighty to dead center. So yeah, that's
that's kind of on the lines of high school ballpark.
It is a cool park, though, I really think that
that park in Noxile is really neat.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
It's uh, we're one out in the top of the
seventh bearcot up ten to five, nine outs to go.
It is it is a big deal to get this win,
that first win in the regionals. It is a big deal.

Speaker 4 (23:09):
Yeah, I mean, you don't want to fight back, you know,
from from in a double elimination format where you literally
are fighting to the elimination right off the bat. It
gives you a little wiggle room, you know, it gives
you a leg up. I mean if then you steal
a second win, you know, maybe then you can throw
off in game three to rest some arms for maybe
a pivotal elimination game at the end to win this thing.
So yeah, that winning that first game in this this

(23:31):
little mini bracket format is really really it's crucial for anybody,
I mean, because there's not a lot of staffs around
the country that have enough arms to kind of get through.
So you've got to have to muddle through one game
and probably throw off a little bit and hope that
those guys come through in a weird way they have
an all hear and then your your bats get you
double digit runs in something like that. So, yeah, it

(23:52):
is big. I know the starter for you seas throwing
like one hundred and seventeen to six. That's probably about
done time.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
I would guess they get a run in the most
Jordan bishoal way possible. Pickoff throw to first goes awry,
runner goes to second, ball gets away, the shortstop interferes,
so the runner goes to third, and then he just
doesn't stop running and comes home to score from first

(24:21):
on a pickoff throw that went awry. Cincinnati adds a
round eleven to five.

Speaker 4 (24:27):
That's a that's a kin to the Little League. Yeah,
Class D not hole home run right, where you hit
a ground ball somewhere and they just throw it around
you squall away and mom and diggo you hit a
home run, right.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
Okay, Yeah, but that's what Honestly, that's the type of
style they play. Puts pressure on teams and if you're
not used to it, and there's not a lot of it,
you know, in the ACC and in the SEC, teams
just get up there and slug away. And I think
it makes pitchers nervous.

Speaker 6 (24:56):
I do too.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
I love small ball and a lot of at I
know it's analytics don't dictate those things at any level.
I mean, you see it less and less. I still
from the high school level and even the college level,
and even at times in Major League baseball with a
lot of moving parts. Sometimes the bunk in small ball stuff.

Speaker 5 (25:13):
Is hard to play. It's hard.

Speaker 4 (25:15):
There's a lot of moving parts. You know, you get
guys on first and second, nobody out. I know, it's
hey swing away for the three r at Homer. You
send runners in motion and put a bunt down and
you watch the chaos that.

Speaker 5 (25:24):
Ensues after that.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Let's talk about the Trey Hendrickson here, Skenny. The reports
are that he is quote unquote extremely dug in. He
knows that if he doesn't play, he's still a Bengal
in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 7 (25:40):
Right.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
I just wonder some of the things I'm hearing, like,
does he have a good understanding of how this whole
thing works?

Speaker 4 (25:48):
He does. And here's what I would tell you is, again,
it's really easy to say that right now. Sure, And
it's easy to take the hard line stance today. But
when push comes to shove and at first game in
chat check it roughly a million dollars is on the line.
It's a little left. Let's just go round number. It's
about a million dollars that first game checks coming up,
and you're gonna skip it. We'll see, we'll see when

(26:09):
pushed back again. It's easy to say, you know, I
can say today, you know what chance three weeks I'm
gonna go buy a Jaguar, and then in three weeks
I'm gonna look up in their line. I don't have
the money by Jaguar see you today?

Speaker 2 (26:19):
I mean, yeah, it's easy to tell people you've got
a brand new Jaguar on the way.

Speaker 5 (26:25):
Yeah, no, I'm getting one.

Speaker 4 (26:26):
I'm getting a jeck War And then yeah, no, I'm not.
I thought I was. I'm just not.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
What are the odds that that he reconsider if they
have offered twenty eight million, I don't know if you've
confirmed this or not. If they have offered twenty eight million,
there's no chance he takes that.

Speaker 4 (26:44):
Yeah, I think there's a chance, But I think in
some stage the Bengals probably will come up a little bit.
You know, you're making stew for now and see if
he does sign it your number, and maybe if they
come back to listen, just get us a little closer
to let's get let's get this to thirty. I mean,
at that point I through the Bengals, are you gonna
fred over that? I mean, yeah, I'm still scritching.

Speaker 8 (27:04):
That's a good point.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
I'm still scratching my head a little bit over the
three contracts that they kind of renegotiate with players to
cut their salary. I get the purpose issue. I guess
you can do it because they get it and you
save a little bit, but you would think that savings
is going too somewhere. And let's not forget Jermaine Pratt's
still on this roster. He hasn't shown up to OTAs,
but he's still on the roster. If they get rid
of him, that's another six meals. So again, if you

(27:26):
get to that point where it's a couple of mill
away from making this this happen and then pull the trigger,
I gotta tell you, man, it's a been a confounding
offseason in my opinion, in a lot of ways. And
the trade one doesn't confound me because I get, I
really do what we've talked about this before. I get
both sides of it. I get the Bengal stance on
this that they're not going to get into the thirty five.

Speaker 5 (27:43):
Million dollars range.

Speaker 4 (27:44):
And I can't blame them, and I also can't blame
Trade for wanting that. But you know, some of the
other stuff, the Shamar Stewart's contract situation, especially when Al
Golden at the Combine literally told us, man and OTAs
are really important for us this year. We got to
really hit the ground run and get everybody going and
moving towards the right to direction for training camp. Well,
we now have one more week next week of fay

(28:04):
of of off season work Oka practices, and then we're
in the mini camp and that's it until July.

Speaker 8 (28:11):
That's it.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
And it's a possibility, it real possibly Shamar Stewart stands
on the sideline for all of this. And even Zach
Tiller last week was asked about you know Chamorrow, you
know you talked about him being a tenente of in
meetings and you know, being a tent of taking metal
rep metal reps. But he did admit when he was
asked push game to show how important it is to
take real reps, and he said, it is important. I mean,
that's how you replicate what you're gonna try to do.
And he's not doing any of that stuff. So it's

(28:36):
that's confounded me. The lack of going to get a
veteran safety's confounded me. The lack of possibly going to
get a veteran guards confound It's been a weird off season.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
By the way, Jake Fraley to run home run, Will
Benson single and then Frehley to run homer and that
reads up six nothing in the top of the six.
Welcome back Jake Frayley Andrew Abbott has gone five, given
up one hit, one walk. He has six strikeouts, his
era down to one eight.

Speaker 4 (29:06):
Skinny can go nine. Did not have another against the
Cubs like last week.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
The Stewart thing isn't a simple skinny because it seems
very simple to me. The Bengals want to put conditions
in the contract that have not been in the contract
before that they have negotiated with their first round picks.
That stipulation, those conditions that they want to put in

(29:37):
the contract are favorable to the club. If something happens
where you can avoid years. It seems to me that
it's as simple as we want this, we give you that.
That's how we meet in the middle, except the Bengals
are just doing the taking with no giving. Is that
a simple way to put it.

Speaker 4 (29:57):
No, that's a very simple way to put it. And
as much as I can side with the team and
the Trey Hendrickson negotiations, it's impossible stuff they're trying to
set up. This is a precedent setting contract they're trying
to establish here and listen, if this kid's balking now,
and again, I can't blame him in his can't football.
I'm not stepping on the field till I get this
contract language right. And if I don't get it right,

(30:18):
we'll see where this goes. Is this what we're gonna
do now every year with first round picks? I mean literally,
this is what we're gonna do every single year. Part
of me wonders if they do this with him, because
they they realize what a boomer bus pick this was,
and that after a couple of years ago, if we
find a way out of this thing, man, we shoucrewed
this up, like you know, nobody's business I honestly don't understand.
I don't get this because listen, you know the slotted money,

(30:38):
it's like eighteen point eight mil. That's not changing. That's
literally what it's going to be. Eighteen point eight mil.
You know that part of it. You know that unless
you put this language in the contract, these have always
been basically fully guaranteed, not always, but of late they've
been fully guaranteed. So you know what you're going to
pay and how you're going to pay it. Just do it.
And in a year where you don't know if you're

(30:59):
gonna have Trey Hendon, you can, you know, again call
his bluff and eventually maybe e case. And in a
year where you drafted Shamar Stewart to add something to
the pass rush, both maybe on the edge and the
fact that he can rush inside was maybe a reason
you didn't go to get a three technique either in
free agency or in the draft, your roll in the
dice big time. And so that's again that goes to
the confounding part of this off season. With things that

(31:22):
are in your control, such as getting this kid signed,
it's very much in your control, because again, the difference
between that and Trey is I mean obvious, there's dollar
figures with trade. You know what the money is here.
I don't understand why this hasn't gotten done on their part. Again,
I can only see this not working out well for
them in the end because I think that camp is

(31:42):
pretty dug in to the point of Trey. But in
this case, I think Shamar's campus dug in, and I
think they have every right to be.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Would it be as simple as here's more money upfront
in your signing bonus and it gets done?

Speaker 4 (31:53):
Maybe? Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe. And you know
the other part two it is. I mean, you're betting
on yourself to not do I'm sure stupiding part of
this was about you know, peds or off field stuff
or any incidents whatever that can be. I mean that
could be a loose you know, that could be loose
whips there of whatever. You determine what an incident is
or an infraction is. But you know, at that point
you're also betting on yourself of hey, I'm gonna get

(32:14):
a bunch of chunk up front, and you know, if
they want to avoid later years, I'm gonna play well
enough and I'm gonna do all the right things I'm
not gonna have to await later years. I get that
part of it, and that maybe is a logical way
to look at it. But again, I have a hard
time pinning to blame on them when the Bengals are
literally trying to say, no, we're going to try to
do this contract the first ever and if it works here,
I mean, did they start doing this with veterans moving forward?

Speaker 9 (32:36):
You know?

Speaker 4 (32:37):
Right, this could be a slippery slope for a lot
of things in.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
That regard for a team that already does contracts that
are not exactly player friendly. Joe Burrow, Jamar Chaser, right,
unless you're Joe Burrow or the guys Joe Burrow says,
you take care of them, or you got problems with me?
You know, I did find that also interesting. I know
it's it's a week old, skinny, but Joe did not

(33:01):
pound the table for Trey Hendrickson. Now he's said, look
here he's here, great, awesome, we love him, he's a
good player, But that was about it. He did not
pound the table for Trey.

Speaker 4 (33:12):
Because I think he realizes that the Bengals are not
going to balk on this that listen, They've got a
figure in mind and they're not going to change. And
while he admittedly wants Trey here, yeah, I mean unlike
when we talked to him back in January after the
Pittsburgh game, he did not. And the way he talked
obviously on Press Row Radio Road in the Super Bowl,
he did not pound the table for that. I think

(33:33):
we all wrote that because I think that was one
of the big takeaways from Joe talking last week. Was
there were a lot of takeaways, actually, but that was
one of them. He didn't exactly, you know, jump up
and down and take his shoe and bounce it like
krush Chef off the podium.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
Here.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
He basically kind of towed the company line while saying, hey,
I still love the guy. I want to hear he's
doing what he thinks he needs to do real quick.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
On the Reds. This a five hundred franchise right now,
right like we're just gonna have to deal with this
all summer, like win three or four, lose four in
a row, win five and six, lose six of seven,
like this is who they are, yo, yo.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
Unless Ellie starts playing like a superstar and one or
two other bats start to follow. The problem though, is
like with an Austin Hayes. Right, he's having a great
he's having a great year if you look his last night.
But yeah, Dott, when he's healthy, and that's the big
part of it, you're gonna get Cees back here at
some point. Does he eventually hit like I've always thought
he's going to hit and and other than his brief

(34:26):
time in twenty twenty three, does not because of again
of injuries. I think that's the part that it keeps
them wildly inconsistent, is you just haven't had, you know,
guys on the field that you need on the field,
and then some of those have underperformed, and it just
feels like I feel like Ellie's at that precipice of Okay,
we're closing in on him taking a big step forward.
I just need to see that on a consistent basis.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
Pitching's been there. It's been great, all right, man, I
appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (34:55):
Great. It's been great other than the last nine outs
of some games.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
Yeah, and we didn't even get to the Alexis DS thing.
But neither here nor there. All right, thanks, man, have
a great weekend and we'll talk soon. Appreciate it. Richard Skinner,
local twelve. You can find him on Twitter at Local twelve. Skinny,
just take a break. Our number one in the books.
Our number two coming up. This is the mo Eggers Show.

(35:19):
I Am not Moeger. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (35:23):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center. At u See Health.
You'll find comprehensive care that's so personal it makes your

more at u sehealth dot com. East found State Route

east of Jecksenberg Road, northbound seventy one. Traffic slow between

(35:50):

of delays and through there on that ezelach with traffic.

Speaker 2 (35:57):
This report is here we go our number two since
Sinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. This is the Moegger Show. I
Am not Moegor. I am Chad Brendle, owner and publisher

(36:18):
of Bearcat Journal dot com. Thank you for choosing me
and tarn busy Friday here in the studio as we
are tracking the outcome of two big games Red's playing

(36:43):
the first place Cubs. We are in the bottom of
the seventh in Chicago, Red's leading six to nothing, gotten
home runs from TJ. Friedel and Tyler Stevenson. Did Frehley
hit one two? Yeah, Freiley hit one two, one by Friedel,

(37:06):
one by Stevenson, one by Frayley, and the two run
shots from Stevenson and Fraley putting the Reds up sixth
to nothing. As they are in the bottom of the seventh.
Andrew Abbot still on the mound. He has thrown six
and two thirds and has given up one hit, no runs,

(37:27):
one walk, seven strikeouts. So Andrew Abbot and his now
one point five to two ERA have been dealing in Chicago. Meanwhile,
in Knoxville in the Tennessee Regional, Cincinnati with an eleven

(37:48):
to six lead over week Forest in the first round
of the NC Double A Tournament and the Bearcats trying
to ants into the winners bracket. Nothing done in this
ballpark in Knoxville. We have seen I think wake Forest

(38:11):
has four home runs. They've been of the mostly solo variety,
so they have not been overly damaging yet. But Cincinnati
is in their bullpen in the bottom of the eighth,
five run lead, six outs to go. We will continue
to monitor there. Probably we've got Jeff Carr coming up

(38:33):
in our number three. Probably a lot of postgame reaction
in our number three. So if you want to get in,
phone lines are open through our number two. If you
want to talk Reds, you want to talk Trey Hendrickson,
Maybe you want to talk some UC baseball, which has
been one of the more fun tickets in town with

(38:54):
the brand of baseball played by Jordan Bischel and the
baseball Bearcats. But phone lines are open, and let's do
that right now. We'll go out to Mark in Florence.
Who wants to talk Reds? Mark, what's going on? My friend.

Speaker 10 (39:10):
Chad Brenda.

Speaker 5 (39:11):
I had to talk to my guy Chad, what's up man?

Speaker 10 (39:14):
Because out here that walk up song.

Speaker 7 (39:16):
But let's get right to it.

Speaker 10 (39:19):
The only problem I had with alexis Daz with the
Reds trading him. We saw the decline for the past
couple of seasons that he that he was declining, especially
in the second half of the season. Why not go
out and try to make a run and get eralled
to Chapman. I always felt like, let's get another guy

(39:40):
that can close games out too. That's proven. So if
you have to move on from him, you would have
somebody else. Like if they had erawed to Chatman this season,
wouldn't it be safe to say we can add five
more wins to their record?

Speaker 2 (39:56):
Maybe? But what was the ask for Eraldus Chatman? Like
it's easy to you know, to say in a in
a bubble, let's go do this, But what if they
wanted something unreasonable for a world as Chapman, or they
want one of your better prospects that you're not ready
to give up on yet, Like I get the Diaz thing.
You know, we could kind of see this coming from

(40:19):
him and that he was not you know, and Austin
and Charlie Goldsmith talked about this a little bit on
Sincy three sixty. His stuff was never insane, you know,
he kind of he pitched his way around the great
start to his career that he had. But when the

(40:41):
control issues came in, that's kind of when the real
red flag started going up. I mean over the past
two years when he was when he was in it
felt like you could just put the might as well
just intentionally walk the first batter, because he was gonna
walk the first guy, and he's gonna have to work
around him from there. Yeah, in hindsight, like they probably

(41:04):
should have built in a contingency plan for what happens
if Diaz doesn't work out. But I can't fault them
too much for that, man, I mean, they had a guy.
It's very difficult to home grow a closer in a situation,
a small market situation like the Reds. When you get one,

(41:26):
it's hard to let him go. It's hard to just
close that book and say, hey, you know, we're moving
on from this guy that was an All Star and
was one of the better closers in baseball for two seasons.
But unfortunately they reached the end of the road on
that and had to pull the trigger on it. But
I think they made a bunch of mistakes in the offseason. Mark,
I don't know that I'm too upset about that one.

Speaker 10 (41:50):
Okay, well, I'll get off in a list of the
rest of the show.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
I appreciate you, man, thanks for calling in. Yeah, the
DS trade, I mean, of course you would like to
have sold higher on him, And that has been a
point of contention with this front office, is that they'll
hold on to guys too long. I don't terribly fault

(42:16):
them for this one. You know, they they hope that
they could get him back to what he looked like
early in his career. I think the thing that kind
of did him in though, like his attitude just seem
like it's stunk, Like he did not handle the adversity
of I got to get better. I'm not taking care

(42:37):
of business right now, and I have to get better
if I want to be a big league relief pitcher.
His effort wasn't great, his body language wasn't great. It
sounds like in the clubhouse he was, you know, not
as not exactly easy to deal with, and that led
to this more than anything. But I'm not going to
fault an organization in the Reds position or trying to

(43:01):
maximize at a spot that's not exactly easy to just
you know, plug and play. I don't fault them terribly.
Mike in l A, Mike, how the heck are you,
my buddy? I'm doing good. I'm I'm I'm watching the

(43:23):
Bearcats here trying to hang on to this eleven to
six lead in Knoxville.

Speaker 5 (43:28):
Cool, that's more important than the Reds game. Well, it's
only the eighth in and remember the Chicago may come
back and still win this thing. It's possible for Yeah,
it looks to me like Abbott is their ace. Now
it's nine hundred green. Right now, it's Andrew Abbott. I

(43:48):
don't care what anybody says. The guy doesn't get hurt.
He throws a lot more pitches than the hunter. And uh,
as of right this moment, I think he's yourn one win.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
He's got a one point five to one e RA
one point five to one e er and that is
not on a you know, on a light workload. That
that is what nine starts forty seven innings. Uh, he's
only given up thirty one hits in forty seven innings.
He's not walking, guys, you know he he is. Just

(44:26):
he's got fifty three strikeouts in forty seven innings. Opponents
are hitting one eighty three against him. So it's hard
to uh to say you're wrong there.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
And he can throw a lot of pitches too. Yeah. Uh,
it seems like he can throw a lot of pitches
and uh and still keep some strength and still keep
some control. So kay, he's very impressive. Now in your chick,
it's super impressive. I mean, I don't say, right, at
this moment, it's a no brainer. He's their best pitch,
best starter.

Speaker 2 (44:56):
I mean, you know, it's always it's always difficult Mike
because he's not like, he doesn't overwhelm you with his stuff.
He's not a you know, a guy that's throwing one
oh two and and and hitting you with a ninety
four mile an hour you know, slider. But he's he

(45:17):
can pitch, he knows how to work counts, he knows
how to work inside and outside like, he knows how
to command the plate. He's just a bulldog out there.
He's he's kinda he's got that old school like nineties
feel to him.

Speaker 5 (45:34):
Yeah, like a tom Boy Evan or something. Yeah, he's
a pitcher, is what he is. He's not a thrower.
He's a pitcher. And uh, I love it. I love
the he's an artist at this point.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
And I really appreciate that one one e R He's
done after seven one hit no runs through seven and
now Tony Santion uh is in the game for the Reds.

Speaker 5 (45:59):
Yeah, I got that MLB extra any is one of
the best things I ever got because I can watch
everything and I for a change the first time in
my life, I had time to do that. What do
you think about I'm sorry, Okay, I'm sorry they had
to put the tape on my arm for.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
I know how that goes. Unfortunately.

Speaker 5 (46:22):
Yeah, I'm kind of I hate the New York Pricks.
Oh did I say? I met the Knicks?

Speaker 2 (46:29):
Easy, Mike, easy, easy, easy.

Speaker 5 (46:34):
But I was almost glad they won, just because I'd
love to see any one at home, and just because
I'm selfish and want to see another another playoff game.
But I'm rooting for Indy because it's almost like a
hometown team right up in Indianapolis. I love it.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
Yeah, And I also I'd really like to see the
Thunder and the Pacers play. I think that would just
be an electric series, an electric brand of basketball. Both
team are deep, both teams have a star guard. Both
teams have tough, physical bigs like they can shoot it
really well. Like I just think, like you'd be looking

(47:10):
at I think games in the one thirties, one twenties,
one thirties where team the shot making is high level. Uh,
the teams can pass, they they they see the game well,
they read the game well. I love how both of
those rosters have been created. And I also Mike For me,

(47:33):
I love if you get those two into the NBA Finals.
I love what it would signify to the rest of
the basketball world on team building, on how to put
a roster together, on not relying on just one or
two guys to get you there, and and the value

(47:54):
of being a star in your role, because I think
both of those teams have a lot of guys that
are stars in their role. And I think it would
be good for the game of basketball to have those
two teams in the finals and get the world stage
to watch those two teams play and have you know,

(48:15):
it's it's sports are copycats, and if people see that
that's working and that's what's elevating to the highest level
of the highest league, then you're going to see people
copy that. I think that's good for the sport. I
think it's great for the sport.

Speaker 5 (48:31):
Yeah, and it's a healthy, refreshing change of style everything
he just talks about where you just don't have to
have you don't have to have a number one, you know,
Lebron type guys, Yeah, but you do have to have
that depth, like you're talking about that roster building, which
is what the Reds need to learn how to do.
But I think that that also shows a lot. Now

(48:52):
we've got two small market teams. I'm happy for either
city whoever wins. Okay, So Oklahoma's never won anything except
college ball, Yeah, and that's not Olclahoma City. And then Indianapolis.
It's kind of since Bobby Knight left, they haven't done well.
The Colts one that Super Bowl and seven or whatever
it was, but since then they haven't won a ton
of anything up there either, So kind of happy for him.

(49:13):
You here's another question I want her. I know you
got to go, and then I want to leave you
with a question. The Reds pay rolls about one hundred
and fourteen million. That's twenty sixth ranked, your twenty second rank.
Tampa Bay is twenties eighth ranked or twenties writer around

(49:34):
twenty eight, twenty seventh. Their payroll is eighty million.

Speaker 8 (49:38):
Look at that.

Speaker 5 (49:38):
There are two games over five hundred and second place
in a tough division. The Reds, how come you can't
do this?

Speaker 2 (49:46):
How come you can't development? The easiest, most understandable answer
is development.

Speaker 6 (49:55):
They have.

Speaker 2 (49:56):
They have drafted a high They've they've sold off players
and gotten guys that were, you know, at the top
of u at the organizations that they've traded with. But
when it comes down to it, Mike, just go back
two years ago when all these guys came up, right,

(50:17):
you know what, they still don't have anybody behind them
that is pushing to get to the major league level.
That's why you get Connor, Joe and Hemple or whatever
the world that guy's name is that that that is
playing now. That's why they get into these problems is

(50:41):
because look, it's it's a long season. Guys are gonna
get injured, You're gonna have bumps and bruises, and and
the thing is, the good franchises have guys that are ready.
Name me one guy at Louisville. Now that Benson and
Hines have have been up hinds his back or whatever,

(51:01):
but namely somebody at Louisville that you're chomping at the
bit to see all these guys this next wave. They're
still two years away. These guys are in Chattanooga, like,
they're not even close. They're in Dayton and Chattanooga. They're
not even close to helping the major league rosters. So

(51:22):
that's what teams like the Rays and the Cardinals, and
we're seeing the Cubs do it like you can't just
be They just have surface level talent and everything underneath
it falls apart. And then McLain's not developing, Steer's not developing.
We haven't seen in Karnasio and Strand or Marte Harley

(51:43):
at all this year. Like the core of what was
supposed to be the core of this team, right Ellie
McClain in Carnassia and Strand and Marte and Steer. The
only guy that's really done anything consistently is Ellie and
the other four it hasn't been what they needed to

(52:05):
be and that's why they're where they are.

Speaker 5 (52:07):
Yeah, I think that's the You described it perfectly. Even
somebody like me can figure that one out. But I
think Hayes this is why Baltimore got rid of him.
This is gonna be a problem for the rest of
the year with this guy. I hate to say it, Chad,
but that's his history.

Speaker 2 (52:24):
It just is it is. He is not a guy
that can stay healthy. He is not a guy that
that is going to consistently be in the lineup. And
I hate it because he's been really good when he's played,
but he's played what you know, fort of the games.
That's not good enough.

Speaker 5 (52:44):
No, what if they're knocking What if some crazy things
happened and they're knocking on the door last week of
the year and dude, oh play hamstring up? Well, okay,
d L you're out for the year. Yeah, I mean
you gotta have guys you can depend on, Chad, And
that gets back to your player development, even even at
that at that level, even with veterans. And I know
you got to go. I want to hit you with

(53:04):
this question. And I don't know what Terran's gonna do
when Indiana, when Indiana beats up beats the Knicks, who's
he going to root for? Who's going to root for?

Speaker 7 (53:13):
Aran?

Speaker 5 (53:13):
You got anybody to rootport? And with the Knicks one
or what.

Speaker 2 (53:17):
I just hopeful this series.

Speaker 5 (53:20):
You got to get into politics.

Speaker 11 (53:22):
You're he's good, But I mean, I'm not jumping like
going by the jersey nothing.

Speaker 5 (53:34):
Yeah, yeah, right now, I'm with you. I'm worth it.
Tarn about the Lakers, but they've disappointed me now ever
since Magic and Kareem and Kobe and them guys left there,
they just haven't been the same team. They won that
good bubble thing whatever it was. Yeah, Jaid, if you
had to pick right now, I'll hang out. If you

(53:55):
had to pick the teams that are going to be
in the playoffs both leagues in baseball right now, who
you gonna pick? And I'll hang up and listen to
my dear friends.

Speaker 2 (54:05):
Uh, that's tough, Mike. I mean, probably the Dodgers, just
because you know Show Hay is gonna come back on
the mound at some point. You would think, Uh, they're
gonna get healthy. They They've they've got three four Hall
of Famers, five Hall of Famers on the roster like
they're they're they're built. You know, they're pitching is not

(54:26):
uh blowing anybody's socks off right now. But they've got
enough offense to hang in there until they get they
get back to where they need to be health wise.
But I will say, uh, and we get a series,
you know, we get the the World Series rewind this weekend.
I like that Yankees team. I kind of like that

(54:48):
Yankees team this year more than last year.

Speaker 5 (54:51):
I like their team too. I I don't see how
you can't. And of course I got a soft spot
for Aaron because of his his roots and his dad
and right in the whole nine yards. But what do
you I I just right now, it looks like three
of those three teams out of the West are are
pretty entrenched.

Speaker 2 (55:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (55:10):
With the Diamons Pod raising Giants. The Giants are having
that's some other than Detroit. That's probably the most remarkable
story of this year because you look at their lineup, Chad,
it doesn't make you uh lint and fear.

Speaker 2 (55:25):
If the Giants played the Dodgers in the playoffs. So
the Giants played the Yankees in the World Series. You're
not taking the Giants, no.

Speaker 5 (55:32):
So, but somehow they're winning games, like eight games over
five hundred or something.

Speaker 4 (55:37):
So that.

Speaker 5 (55:39):
Thank you pal.

Speaker 2 (55:40):
All right, thanks Mike, have a great have a great weekend.

Speaker 5 (55:43):
You two.

Speaker 2 (55:44):
There you go, let's take a break. More after this.
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (55:51):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Traffic from the U S Health
Traffic Center.

Speaker 3 (55:57):
At you See Help, you'll find comprehensive care that's so
personal it makes your best tomorrow possible. That's boundless care
for better outcomes. Expect more at u see health dot com.
So Ithbound seventy five near two seventy five, three lanes
blocked from an accident. Traffic is stop and go back
from Union Center Boulevard northbound on State Route forty eight.

(56:19):
Another accident at Lovenon Road and on ninth A Dalton.
It's an accident that he sound like with traffic.

Speaker 12 (56:26):
This report is sponsored advice.

Speaker 6 (56:37):
I stop what you're doing because I'm about to ruin
the image and the style that you're used to. I
look funny, but yo, I'm making money.

Speaker 2 (56:44):
See so yo, Well, I hope you're ready for me.

Speaker 7 (56:46):
And I got the round.

Speaker 2 (56:47):
I mean you you turn my mic on, humpy starting rabbit.
I'm not talking over that.

Speaker 8 (56:52):
See, you got your shelf.

Speaker 2 (56:53):
So just let me introduce myself.

Speaker 6 (56:55):
My name is Humpty pronoun.

Speaker 2 (57:00):
Just say rest in peace. Too many of these guys. Terrence. Yeah,
it's depressing. You're gone.

Speaker 10 (57:10):
I like the I like slther.

Speaker 2 (57:13):
The Bearcats are one out away.

Speaker 6 (57:15):
They are.

Speaker 2 (57:18):
Would be would be a big one. Again. I'm not uh,
I'm not putting anything in the books in this ballpark
until until it's it's said and done. But uh, eleven
six two outs in the bottom of the ninth Bearcats
looking to get across the finish line in uh, pretty
convincing fashion in the opening round against a really good

(57:43):
Wake Forest team out of the a CC. So we'll
keep an eye on that Chicago, oh n top of
the ninth because we got it within four six to two.
The red is our leading. UH would be nice to
get maybe just just feel a little better getting insurance

(58:06):
run here or too on the top of the ninth
to UH, to stretch this thing out a bit given
the results from last weekend when Chicago was at Great
American Ballpark. UH. There's there's a lot going on in
college football and it feels major. It feels heavy that

(58:31):
the you know, there's decisions about the college football playoff,
and there's a lot of posturing about the future of
the sport after we get a decision on the house settlement.
There's talk about the transfer portal and and how the
transfer portal will be structured. There's a lot of jockeying

(58:53):
for position. Everybody is kind of battling for their spot.
And we've heard from the ACC, We've heard from the
Big Twelve this week, we're hearing a lot from Greg
Sanke and the SEC. Surprisingly, maybe things have been quiet

(59:13):
from Tony Pettiti and the Big Ten. As the Bearcats
get the win. Tarren Bearcat Baseball with the DUB eleven
to six over wake Forest. They will play tomorrow against
the winner of Tennessee in Miami of Ohio. My guy Dave,

(59:37):
who's a Tennessee alum, said he expects Tennessee to win
by double digits. I might, I might be on it.
I don't know. I don't feel as confident because they're
playing at Tennessee. This was anywhere else, I think i'd
have Tennessee on upset watch. But eyes will be glued

(59:58):
six o'clock to to Miami and Tennessee to see who
the Bearcats will face tomorrow in the Knoxville Regional eleven
to six. The Bearcats get the DUB, they will advance
to play Saturday six o'clock. Stay tuned. Might have might

(01:00:24):
have somewhere for us to watch that game coming up
tomorrow at six pm, and then if they win, then
they go to the regional final Sunday at six pm.
Jordan Bishall's awesome. I know you guys have had him
on Tarran. You've gotten to talk to him a little bit,
You've gotten to listen to him with MO. He is fantastic.

Speaker 6 (01:00:46):
He was on with.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
JP spond Seller, who was a bear Cat and does
a podcast called Road to Omaha that's on the Bearcat
Journal Network now, and I guess he's He was on
Wednesday night Arran and he talked about it. He's like, eh,
it's probably an ncuble A I DNC double a violation.
But I took two of the guys out for ice cream.

(01:01:10):
It was a nice It's a good night for ice cream.
Those guys have done a lot. I wanted to thank him.
I took him out and bought him ice cream. If
they're gonna, if they're gonna hit me with the violation,
they hit me with the violation, I don't care. They
deserved it. I love that, Like the guy has his
team's back, and they play like they love him. They
play like they respect the way that he asked them

(01:01:32):
to perform. And uh, they are one of the one
of the best tickets in town. So keep that in mind.
Next year, they got some promising young freshmen. I think
they're gonna be really good for a long time to come,
as long as Jordan Bischel is the head coach of
the team. But back to Greg Sankie. Greg Sankie has

(01:01:53):
been made the villain in all this. I know, Terran,
you probably don't love him because you're a Big ten guy,
and I get that. It's fine, but Greg Sankee is
doing what Greg Sankee is supposed to be doing. He's
the commissioner of the SEC. His job is to make
decisions that benefit the conference that pays his bills. But

(01:02:21):
there is a fine line here because the Big ten
in the SEC have asserted their dominance over the sport.
They have let everybody know, we are the two big dogs.
We call the shots. Everybody has said, Okay, you're the
two big dogs, you call the shots. We agree, but

(01:02:45):
there has to be some sort of responsibility associated with
that to steward the sport forward, to make decisions that
are in your best interest, but also so have some
bearing on the best interest of the game. Because that

(01:03:05):
does not feel like what they are doing right now.
It feels like the Big ten are making the best
decisions for the Big ten. Tony Pettiti and his conference.
The SEC is doing the same. But this notion, there's
been this notion out there that those two conferences are
going to break apart from the NCAA. They're going to
create a super league, and that's going to be kind

(01:03:29):
of the next evolution of college football thirty two forty
teams whatever it is, and they're gonna you know, run
the sport and everybody else is kind of going to
get left behind. I have sat on this for years,
years since all of this, you know, the conference realignment

(01:03:50):
really started, you know, restructuring and reshaping the way that
the sport was viewed, and the TV networks and the
money grabs to grab markets and then to grab brands.
The SEC and the Big Ten hate each other. Darn

(01:04:11):
they hate each other. The way that those two conferences
operate are as diametrically opposite is as it gets, and
I don't see any because we're seeing it this week.
Everybody thought that, you know, the Big ten in the
SEC were just going to push through the college Football

(01:04:34):
playoff to sixteen teams and then a four four two
two one model, which is the Big ten in the
SEC get four automatic qualifying teams, the Big twelve and
the ACC get two automatic qualifying teams. There's one for
the group of five and then three at large bids.
And then this week Greg Sankee pivoted said, you know what,

(01:04:57):
we kind of like five to eleven, which is the
top five conferences get a automatic Berth to the College
Football Playoff and then eleven, you know, selections. And the

(01:05:17):
way that this is being postured, at least from my lens,
is that Greg Sankee and the folks at the SEC
looked at this and said, why would we limit ourselves
to four? We're better than the Big ten, We're deeper
than the Big ten. We have more great teams every
year than the Big Ten. I don't know if he's right,

(01:05:40):
but they believe it, and they're looking at this and saying,
why would we limit ourselves to four? We can get six?
Big ten can get three four, and we're going to
take even more of the money off the top of
the pie with this format. And you're starting to see
acts finally be shown because there's been talking about scheduling

(01:06:04):
alliance and you know, all these things about the Big
ten and the SEC working together that I just don't see.
I don't see these two conferences holding hands and skipping
into the night. Do you tearin? Nope. They don't like
each other. They hate everything about each other. They're all
of a sudden just gonna work together and break off

(01:06:27):
and do their own thing and agree, all of a sudden,
agree on all of the things that they have never
agreed on before, because there would still be a power struggle.
I think one of the reasons the SEC is so
defensive about the Big ten. The Big ten's always gonna
have more money. They've got bigger markets, they've got bigger land,

(01:06:49):
grant institutions, bigger fan bases. Like the money in terms
of just the sheer financial position tilt's favor to the
Big ten, and there's nothing the SEC can do to
change that unless they start making decisions that not only

(01:07:13):
help the Big the SEC, but undermine the Big ten
in the process. I think that's what we're seeing right now.
If mines are open five one, three, seven, nine, fifteen thirty,
tell me if you disagree. I don't think they like
each other. I don't think they're ever going to like
each other more after this. Since Sinaty's ESPN fifteen.

I thought you said we weren't going to do it.
I mean, you're totally do it, all right. There was
a I can't I was watching something over the weekend
and or no, actually I think I was at my
best friend's kids graduation the other day and one of

(01:08:49):
the girls in the graduating class was named Medina. Wouldn't
your name? Wouldn't you just have to be funky cold
like that? Exactly funky old Medina. We always used to
whenever we'd travel up to the the Akron Cleveland area
for uh for AAU tournaments, We'd we'd have to, you know,

(01:09:13):
travel in and out of Medina, and it was just
funky cole Madina. Like that. They should change the name
of the city to funky cold Medina. I think it
would work much better. So Bearcats win, the Reds they're
hanging by a thread. That's the great tone. Look once said, Uh,

(01:09:35):
hanging by a string, that's what he said. They're They're
up six to two, bottom of the ninth, two outs.
Graham Ashcraft started the inning, but runners on second and
third on a pair of doubles, one that Will Benson
maybe should have caught. But Emilia Pegan is in now.

(01:09:58):
Uh he got dansby swans in striking out, swinging, and
now he's facing Horner. It's account one ball, two strikes
to count with the Reds up six to two in
the bottom of the ninth, So we might get we
might get a pair of wins to talk about in

(01:10:18):
the five o'clock hour. Terran, you think Jeff f ff
Cardinals by U see baseball. I don't know. Look man
covering Red's win. Reds win, Red's win. Nico Horner grounds
out to l DA La Cruz and the Reds hang on.

(01:10:39):
They strand runners at second and third. Those runners would
have and did score over the weekend last weekend when
the Cubs were in town. So it also allows tearing
the possibility that the Reds might win this series, because
I think they've lost two hundred and forty eight straight
series where they lose the opening This is up to

(01:11:02):
like thirty seven something something crazy where if they don't
win the opening game, they do not win the series.

Speaker 11 (01:11:08):
And now you just have to ask the question, if
they hold onto those two leads they had last week, yeah,
what this series record would be at the clubs?

Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
How much different does with the standings exactly? How much
different do the standings look if they can hang on
even to one of them and instead they gave away both.
Andrew Abbott was incredible. Seven innings, pitch, one hit, one walk,

(01:11:36):
eight strikeouts. His eer is down to one fifty one.
Tony Santition came in, did not have a good go
of it, gave up three hits, two runs, both of
them earned, and one third of an inning. Ashcraft came
in and got him out of the jam, and uh,

(01:11:57):
he did give up a couple hits and the runners
that Santyon left on base, but then gets it into
the ninth. We go to Pegan. Actually, Ashcraft gave up
those two hits in the top of the ninth, that's
my man. Bottom of the ninth, my bad. And then
Pegan gets the final two outs, including a strikeout and

(01:12:18):
the Reds escape home runs from TJ. Friedel, a two
run shot from Stevenson, and a two run shot from Freiley,
both of those with Will Benson on Basse who had
singled in front of both of them, and that pretty
much covers the runs outside of In the first. After

(01:12:43):
the Freedo home run, Ellie d la Cruz hit a
double and then Gavin lux followed that double up with
one of his own that made it two to nothing
in the top of the first and gave the Reds
a jump on the Cubs that they never gave up.
So important series opening win for the Reds, big big

(01:13:05):
win for the Bearcats as they take down wake Forest.
It's their first NCUBA regional win since twenty nineteen, when
they went to Corvallis and beat the defending national champion
Oregon State Beavers. Unfortunately, they lost the next day to Michigan.
They did not get out of the regional, but put

(01:13:28):
up a heck of a fight on a team that
you know, didn't have a great year but played great
at the end of the year, won the American Athletic
Conference Tournament, used that to get into the nc DOUBLEA tournament,
and then had a good showing in Corvallis. This is
a Cincinnati team that is in as an at large.
They have played good baseball. The big concern being the

(01:13:55):
depth of their pitching staff, and that's going to be
one of those things that we'll find out tomorrow. Tommy
O'Connor didn't pitch today, which is how they did things
in the Big twelve tournament where they went with their
one to two in the opening game to make sure

(01:14:17):
that they got that win over Texas Tech got into
the second round. So I'm guessing we will see O'Connor
tomorrow against either the Tennessee Volunteers or the Miami RedHawks.
You don't hear this often, Tarren. I'm guessing there's a
lot of UC fans that are also Miami fans starting

(01:14:40):
at six o'clock tonight, because boy, you'd much rather see
Miami in that game than you would Tennessee playing in
their home park. One of the better hitting teams in
all of baseball, and that team is built to hit
home runs in that park. And Nathan Taylor not see
him tomorrow after going six innings, seven hits, five runs,

(01:15:04):
but he had seven strikeouts. He threw I think one
hundred and eighteen pitches. So it's gonna be on the
other guys to see if they can get this done
and advance to six o'clock Sunday, which would be the
winner's bracket. They if they win tomorrow night, they played

(01:15:25):
six o'clock Sunday. If they lose, they would play at
noon Sunday, then have to come back and play Sunday night.
And if they won that one, then they would play
again on Monday. But a great start, great start for
the Batcats, six runs in the bottom of the second

(01:15:45):
to give them an eight to nothing lead, and they
held a potent wake Forest offense at Bay the rest
of the way. Burnaman and Jones on Baseball Next ready

Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Here we go, hour number three on a busy, busy
Friday afternoon in the Queen City. It's it's a little wet,
little gross outside, but not in Chicago and not in Knoxville.

(01:17:19):
The Cincinnati Reds winners six to two to open the
series in Chicago in Wrigley Field over the Cubs. Reds
get home runs from Friedel Stevenson and Frailey, outstanding pitching
performance from Andrew Abbott seven innings, one hit, one walk,

(01:17:43):
eight strikeouts, stifled stifled the Chicago Cubs bats, and the
Reds get a dub. The bear Cats also get a dub.
In the Knoxville Regional opening round of NCAA Tournament Action

(01:18:06):
and the Bearcats, who were the three seed knockoff number
two seed, wake Forest eleven to six. They get home
runs from Quinton Coates, Derek Pitts, and Donovan Ford. They
get a solid pitching performance from Nathan Taylor. Six innings,
seven hits, five runs, seven strikeouts. Got a little rocky

(01:18:30):
in the bottom of the second after Cincinnati had a
six run top of the second long second inning, and
that maybe threw Taylor off a little bit, but other
than that, he was outstanding. And let's go to the
man on the scene for Bearcat Journal dot com beat
writer extraordinaire, the best Bearcats beat writer in the market,

(01:18:53):
Keegan Nickoson, Keegan, what was the atmosphere? How was the experience?
Game one in Knoxville.

Speaker 8 (01:19:02):
The atmosphere is awesome. But I have to get something clear.
Are you calling yourself a beat writer and I'm better
than you or I'm an.

Speaker 6 (01:19:11):
Okay?

Speaker 8 (01:19:11):
I was just making sure we are on the same page.

Speaker 2 (01:19:13):
I was a beat writer for a while. I retired
from that. That's a lot of work. I don't I
don't have time for all that.

Speaker 8 (01:19:24):
That's what I figured you were saying.

Speaker 6 (01:19:25):
Yeah, but.

Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Just take the compliment. Just take the compliment.

Speaker 8 (01:19:32):
It's hard for you. I don't get to hear. But
the atmosphere was awesome. The only thing I could have
wanted a little bit more was a little bit more sunshine,
but even that it was a little spotty. This stadium,
even though it's under construction, is really really cool and
you can see the potential that it's going to have

(01:19:52):
when they get all the construction done, it's going to
be one of the beacons of college baseball in the
entire country. And that's just really be a to see.
But you know, you kind of when the game starts
and it's it's in the first it's in the early innings,
like first inning, you're thinking, man, is Cincinnati up to
the task, Like, you know, might have to play Tennessee.

(01:20:16):
Wake Forest has been one of the top five top
ten programs in the entire country of the past few years, Like,
is this just going to be a level up that
they're not going to be able to handle? And then
very quickly they proved that they could, getting two runs
in the first inning off a true freshman and Derek Pitts,
and then getting six runs in the second inning and
blowing it wide open against the first team all a

(01:20:39):
SEC starter and Blake's morning star. It was really an
exclamation point. They really didn't leave any doubt. Very very
fun game to watch, and I'm looking forward to whoever
they get to play tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (01:20:53):
Did it look like did it feel like, especially at
the beginning of that second inning, knee House gets a single,
four get it's a single, and that morning Star balks.
Did it feel like Cincinnati's reputation on the bases with
the bunting, with all the pressure that they put on you,
did it feel like that got to morning Star? Mean
he walked away, He walked three guys in the first

(01:21:15):
walk the bases loaded with two outs and comes back
gives up a six spot in the second. He looked rattled.

Speaker 8 (01:21:23):
Yeah, And I asked coach Fisher about that after the
game and he kind of deflected, but you can see
Lennon Peerick and Derek kit were nodding along like, yes,
that that second ending was each perfect reflection an example
of what fisherball is. And really, when you play like that,
you put the pitcher between the rock and a hard
place because you have to pay attention to the guys

(01:21:44):
in the basse pas and then when you do that
a little too much, he was focused and you maybe
forget to throw the ball to first base, or you
leave a fastball two which is hired and where it
was supposed to be, and then it could hit into
the gap or were out of the park for a
home run, like they did twice in the second inning,
And it was very, very clear and very evident that
it was rattling morning Star. He saw the walks pile up,

(01:22:07):
he saw the hits pile up, and then anytime like
a really pounce a picture like that box, he knows
that there's something going on. So they got to him.
It worked, and it was the perfect example of UC's
identity and how they want to be playing.

Speaker 2 (01:22:21):
And then, I mean, the thing about that ballpark is
you never know because it is a hitters park, and
Wake does have some guys that can mash. It felt
like it was always one or two swings from from danger.
But you have to credit Taylor and the rest of

(01:22:41):
the Cincinnati pitching staff for working around that. They did
give up a couple solo home runs, but they didn't
do anything that really put all of the offensive momentum
back on Wake for.

Speaker 8 (01:22:52):
His side, Yeah, and I think Nate Taylor he could
be probably the most valuable player from this game. Even
though his stat line wasn't anything really to write home about,
he did top his season total in pitches by seven
at one seventeen, and I think it's back to back
start that he set his season record for pitches threw

(01:23:13):
one hundred and ten against Texas Tech. So it's interesting
that Texas Tech was a game they had to have
to feel comfortable come selection Monday, and then this game
was a game you had to have in order to
feel comfortable on Saturday. So having that guy in your
arsenal that can go out and shove is huge. And
then in the bottom of the second it looked like

(01:23:33):
it was going to unravel like it did for Morning Star.
The walks were going, wake Forest is hitting, and then
it like they got a double play. They then got overturned,
and then they get another double play. And this game
is also a really big reflection is come up. So
little things matter because you see, I was one of

(01:23:54):
the best fielding percentages in the entire country, Wake Forrest
is one of the worst. And a lot of that
small stuff, a lot of the free stuff that wait
Forth coach Tom Walter was talking about ended up playing
a role because he had an awesome quote and it's
so simple, but it spoke so loudly. He said, we
hit our home runs with nobody on base. They hit

(01:24:14):
bears with people on base and you boil it down.
That's one of the biggest differences, and it really is.

Speaker 2 (01:24:20):
Yeah, and then they continue to put the pressure on you.
And we saw it in the seventh inning. Knee House walks,
and then they're paying attention to him. They're paying attention
to him, afraid he's gonna steal. They try to pick
him off, the ball gets away, he goes to second,
they throw that ball away and then I don't know

(01:24:41):
if you saw it or not, but the umpire, the
second base ump called interference on the shortstop. So on
his way to third, Kneehouse just kept rolling. And even
if he would have been thrown out at the plate,
he would have been sent back to third base. That's
heads up House, that's heads up by the third base coach.

(01:25:02):
And that's just the type of pressure that Bischel ball
puts on an opponent.

Speaker 5 (01:25:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:25:08):
And you can even look at Landon Venderick tagging up
from first on that first sax slide by Carrington Crime.
I mean, that was a really aggressive play and even
the ESPN commentator said it. They said, there's no reason
that ball should be going towards home like that ball
should be going to second to prevent that runner from
going to second, and then he sees the ball coming
towards the cutoff, takes off and barely gets in by

(01:25:30):
the by the Hayri's keys. So yeah, it's it was
a really really good Fisher ball game in all aspects, fielding,
base running, hitting, doing the little things. And then you know,
for a team that has had their struggles on the
mound a lot of the times, it's about damage control.
And there were multiple innings by multiple pitchers that they

(01:25:51):
were graded with a home run or maybe a walk,
and then they just gutted it out and then they
gave up one, maybe two runs and they kept you
See ahead comfortably.

Speaker 6 (01:25:59):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
So, Kegan, you probably upset the Miami RedHawks contingent with
your tweet after the game.

Speaker 8 (01:26:08):
What I said, they'll play the winner of Miami or
Tennessee No.

Speaker 2 (01:26:11):
At four fifty seven. You tweeted, Jordan Bischell says the
look at Landon veteric and whether he can play the
field at some point, also said Kellen O'Connor will start
against Tennessee tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (01:26:22):
You know what, I'm leaving it up. I hope that
gets as much track, and I hope all the Miami
people come after me. I really hope they do.

Speaker 2 (01:26:32):
In reality, I know my guy Dave Simone last night
on the BCJ podcast on Bearcut Journal's YouTube channels, said
he would be surprised if Tennessee doesn't win by double digits,
but Miami does have a couple quad one wins. They
are you know, they have a good starting pitcher, a

(01:26:53):
good number one. I think, you know, if Tennessee is
getting you know, hitting the ball out of the yard
like they do on a regular basis in that place,
is going to be very difficult for Miami. But this
is not a crazy thought to think Miami's gonna give
Tennessee at least a little bit of trouble.

Speaker 8 (01:27:11):
I think it is just because of how the starting
pitcher will react to this atmosphere when there's ten thousand
people here screaming as loud as they can, because I
don't know if they can replicate that at the Key
Field in Oxford, the friendly confines of m Key Field.
So I think that's going to be the number one
thing to watch is how the pitcher doesn't is he

(01:27:32):
giving out free passes? Leaning to two and three run
home runs, because that's what's going to be so difficult
to come back from. They're running into the balls. That
stuff can kind of be where it's even because Visa
college baseball players have been playing for a really long
time and they're very, very good at what they do.
In Miami is a really good team. Obviously, there's a

(01:27:55):
coach that cases for Cincinnati that had a lot of
success in the MAC and he can bounce that it's
a good baseball conference. So yeah, it's not going to
be a cakewalk. But I just think the pitching is
going to be very difficult for Miami trying to live
up to this atmosphere and have success here.

Speaker 2 (01:28:12):
Six o'clock tomorrow, if it is Tennessee, the Bearcats have
a chance or how tough does that get? This get?
I mean, you have to figure we probably won't see
Nathan Taylor again this weekend after throwing one hundred and
seventeen pitches today. O'Connor Kellen O'Connor going tomorrow is their
their number two guy who's been solid all year. But

(01:28:34):
there's you know, there's not a lot of depth that
has been developed yet behind those two main guys.

Speaker 8 (01:28:43):
Yeah, I think that that's one of the biggest reasons
why today was so big. And you know, you use
two relievers, but I think too of them went only
two innings each, so you didn't have to burn through
four or five guys. And then you get Nathan Taylor
to go six full innings, so they could have been
in a position where it was a one run game.
And then they bring in Collan O'Connor to close because

(01:29:06):
he's been closing for a little bit as of recent
so they get him to start, and then yeah, it's
it's going to be tough. You know, I didn't think
they were going to beat Wake Forest or they proved
me wrong there being able to beat this finnes See team.
And again I'll out preach on the atmosphere into just
how next level it is. I think it's going to

(01:29:27):
be very difficult. But if there's going to be a
smaller team, a lower seated team that's going to do it,
I think Cincinnati is one of the better candidates because
of how they play and putting pressure and forcing airs,
forcing walks, student bases, doing all the small things.

Speaker 2 (01:29:44):
Right, did you did you get a place close to
the stadium? Like did you get where are you across
the street. Is that what you're aiming for?

Speaker 8 (01:29:54):
That's what I almost got, but I couldn't look my
air DNB when I wanted to. So I am in
a tiny home on a farm in Seymour, twenty five
thirty minutes away. And you know what, Chad, I'm looking
forward to it. I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
Thanks, brother, have fun tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (01:30:19):
He was telling the Miami people Brickstreet sucks.

Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
By Key is trying to start fights, Taren Man, I

I like it, Teren, I like where we're going than
Jeff here, you're a big Bobby Brown guy, right.

Speaker 6 (01:31:59):
I was thinking that sounds like a really good Michael
Jackson's on there.

Speaker 2 (01:32:02):
This Bobby Brown. Whitney Houston's husband, you know, Bobby Brown.

Speaker 6 (01:32:09):
Zach Brown's cousin.

Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
No, there're no, I mean maybe but probably not. Probably not.
Probably Charlie Brown's got no, probably not him either, Uh yeah, no,
probably not. Jeff Carr locked on Reds. Jeff, how the
heck are you on this?

Speaker 5 (01:32:29):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:32:30):
Little gloomy, but increasingly uh spirit full Friday afternoon.

Speaker 6 (01:32:36):
Very happy after two strikeouts from Meliopah Gott. Let me
tell you what I was worried in the eighth.

Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
There was there was reason to be worried, but the
Reds hold on six to two. Were you also monitoring
the baseball bear cuts or were you just strictly Reds today?

Speaker 6 (01:32:53):
I was keeping a Twitter eye on our our pals Keegan,
Nickoson and and those guys. But that was the tenth
of my bear cat knowledge. I was happy to have
it to see that they were doing well too.

Speaker 2 (01:33:04):
Yeah, two big wins on a Friday afternoon. Let's get
into the reds.

Speaker 5 (01:33:09):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:33:10):
TJ. Friedel is having a strong year. I mean he's
hitting three oh six. Does he have the highest ops
on the team for guys that are playing regularly. I
mean it's eight twenty one now, which pretty dang good.
He has a two hit day, hits the leadoff home run,
gets a couple of walks, two for three. He's becoming

(01:33:34):
getting back to that form where he is starting to
really set the table at the top of his order.

Speaker 6 (01:33:39):
Yeah, and he's been the multi hit game team here recently,
I mean absolutely lighting up the box score. That's why
he's hitting Ober three hundred now, really jumped his average up.
But I feel like he's kind of been that guy
that we're just like, oh, yeah, TJ. Friedel, he's here,
he's part of this team, and we haven't quite given
him enough creditor over the last couple of years as

(01:34:01):
being one of, if he's healthy, one of the most
consistent members of this lineup, and he shows you why
because he chose his absolute range and and honestly, he
was a web gym away like Colin Ray makes an
amazing diving catch to rob him of a infield bunt
hit single. We could have seen just the the spectrum

(01:34:23):
of possible hits from TJ. Friedel in this one game
where he goes lead off home run and he he
was like an inch away from a bunt hit single.

Speaker 2 (01:34:32):
On the flip side of that. Uh, Santigo Espinal over
five pair of strikeouts, he has kind of become the
whipping boy. In some ways. I get it he is
not a good fit in the two hole, especially kind
of the way the the analytics are taking the game

(01:34:52):
and the way that that things are structured. But I
also think a lot of this like it's it's not
Santigo Espinal's fault, Like he's just trying to do what
he can to help the team. This is a team
that is thin, they're dealing with injuries. They're putting this
guy in every day. He probably should be at the
bottom of the order, and he's a fine enough, you know,

(01:35:16):
super sub guy, but putting them in this two hole, man,
it is just not working out.

Speaker 6 (01:35:22):
It's exposed him and to be honest with you, I
think this is one where you got to point the
finger at Tito. Yeah, like yes, he is making the
choice because his preferred number two hitter, and Matt McClain
has just been anything but reliable at all, though he
did give himself a hit today, but he's trying to
figure out the answer to who should be the red
number two hitter, and he's been trying with Espan all

(01:35:44):
but I think it's time to try something else. If
it's Gavin lux or if it's a platoon of Gavin
Luckx against Righty's Spencer Steer against lefties, if it's you know,
do you move Ellie de la Cruz? I would like
them to move Elli de la Cruz into the number
two spot, But that also is when Austin Hayes is
available to hit clean up.

Speaker 8 (01:36:04):
It just it just feels like.

Speaker 6 (01:36:05):
There's so many different options, but none of them are
good right now, because when you move one guy, then
you open up a whole nother can of worms. The
questions of okay, so where does that spot get then filled?
Because Elian de la Cruz is clearly the most dangerous
hitter in this lineup, and that deserves to be the

(01:36:25):
number two hitter, But then who do you hit third?
And who do you hit fourth? And it almost just
feels like throw darts against you know, a board right here.
And you hope that, you know, the clutch hits that
you've seen from Spencer Steer here lately are more of
what he's turning into and not just kind of a
fluke and not just a you know, a flash in

(01:36:46):
the pan. And then Tyler Stevenson now with his third
home run in four games, you love to see that.
Can you count on him in the middle of the
order moving forward? You hope so, because this team just
did not address that this offseason. And I wonder, and
part of this is not up to them, it's just
who is ready to trade at the moment, But I

(01:37:06):
wonder if they're gonna be able to address that at
the trade that line.

Speaker 2 (01:37:11):
Yeah, I mean that again, it goes back to if
we saw these things in the off season, Jeff and
we talked about the things that they were not getting done,
and then you get to you know, the the quarter
pole and the third pole of the season, and the
things that we could see are hurting this team It

(01:37:34):
makes you scratch your head. And I don't just want
to put it on Nick Krawl because I think it
goes up higher up than that. I think if Nick
Krawl had his druthers, of course you would go out
and add a bat at third. So Santigo Espanol is
not your your third basement hitting in the two hole.
Like That's a lot of what it comes down to
for me is like they look down the barrel of

(01:37:55):
the gun and said we're fine, but their sites were off.
The sites were offered.

Speaker 6 (01:38:00):
JEP side well, and you also had and I'm blanking
on whether it was John Rossi or John Hayman that
said an unnamed executive in the Red front office said that, yes,
in the off season, we were worried about the lineup. Okay,
why didn't you do anything about it? I appreciate your appreciation,

(01:38:21):
your admitting your your failures. I guess I don't know.
You don't really get points for that. It doesn't give
you a win in the win loss column. So I
think that that is kind of a silly thing to
come out, And it makes me wonder Chad that, like,
did they really get surprised buying Nick Martinez picking up
the qualifying offer, because every time I think about that point,

(01:38:43):
I come back to the conclusion of, yeah, I think
they were shocked whenever he picked up the qualifying offer.
And sure he's been a very very good pitcher for
them so far this season, but I think they were
expecting to have that twenty one million dollars to use
elsewhere and he picked it up, Like, I don't know
why they put that on the table for him.

Speaker 2 (01:39:03):
Yeah, Andrew Rabbit. I had a caller Mike in La Jeff,
you know, I'm sure you know, Mike. He wanted to know,
is Andrew Abbott the the best pitcher on this staff?
The ace of this staff? Andrew Abbot and his one
fifty one.

Speaker 6 (01:39:22):
Era certainly pitching like it right now. I still think
it's Hunter Green, But I think Andrew Rabbit is just
pointing the finger at all of us that are like,
you guys are overlooking me right now, because we sort
of look at this rotation and we go it's Hunter Green,
it's Nicolodolo, And yeah, you know, Andrew Rabbit's there too.
He's pretty cool, but he has been far better than

(01:39:44):
pretty cool. And he showed us why. On Friday afternoon,
I mean the way that he was pitching against Pete
grow Arnsharm, the guy that was killing the Reds here
at Great American Ballpark. He struck him out three times
and just blew him away. Blew away dance by Swanson.
Kept that lineup that has absolutely killed everybody. The Colorado Rockies.

(01:40:05):
You should kill them, but they've just been killing everybody
here recently. And Andrew Abbot said, man, hold on beer,
I got.

Speaker 2 (01:40:12):
It, I got I got this one.

Speaker 6 (01:40:13):
I got it.

Speaker 2 (01:40:15):
Andrew Abbott started twenty five games in twenty twenty four.
He had one hundred and fourteen strikeouts in twenty five games.
He has started nine games. He's only thrown forty seven
and two third innings. He's already at fifty three strikeouts,
and in those forty seven and two thirds innings, he's
only allowed thirty one hits. Opponents are hitting one eighty three.

(01:40:40):
He's just a guy that knows how to pitch. He
doesn't have this like that's why we don't label in
the ace, right. He doesn't have that dominant stuff. He's
not throwing one oh one in the eighth. But the
guy knows how to deal and he just reminds me
of like a like a guy from the nineties or
the early two thousands that just went out there and

(01:41:00):
knew how to get outs.

Speaker 6 (01:41:02):
Yeah, he's He's a guy that if he's open for it,
I really want the Reds to sign him long term.
And of course, you know the big question is, you know,
what does the player want to do in that case,
what the agent want to do, and so there's lots
more involved than just Reds go get it done. But
if they can, they should absolutely get it done because
he is going to be a very consistent part of

(01:41:23):
this rotation for a while. I think his I think
his step forward this year Chad has really been and
I know Chris Welsh talked a lot about it on
the radio broadcast today that he has just gotten so
much better at the inside pitch to right handed hitters,
where it kind of felt like he had to live
on the outside of the zone and low in the
zone and trying to trying to pitch on the perimeter

(01:41:44):
against right handers, but he never really had that one
pitch that they could worry about. He's developed the cup
fastball that he can hit the inside corner with against
righty's and that's opened up so many more possibilities against them,
where you know, it's it's the way of baseball now
to load up the lineup of right handers against the
left handed pitcher. So he needed that that pitch the

(01:42:05):
thing that they had or they needed to stay honest against.
And I think he's really developed that in this cutter.

Speaker 2 (01:42:12):
What are we looking at for the rest of the
way this weekend in Shytown.

Speaker 6 (01:42:16):
Definitely got some tough matchups coming up. I mean this
lineup is not going I mean one game does not
mean that. I now think that the Reds shut down
the line up, especially watching Tony Santeon tripover his own
two feet trying to get outs. But I mean, you
got the right guys. You get the Knicks going up
against the Cubs, Nick Nick and Nick Lodolo and Nick Martinez.

(01:42:38):
So how long can they pitch into each game? Are
they going to give you seven innings like Andrew Rabbit
just did, because that's what this bullpen desperately needs. It
feels like it's been so used here recently, and for
good measure. I mean, Feo was getting some wins. I
mean they swept the Guardians and all that good stuff,
But you know, at what cost and what's this going

(01:43:01):
to mean for these three games? Because the Reds cannot
lose the next two games. They've got to win one
of two, and man, we'd be feeling really good on
Monday if they win both of these games. But just
win the series and let's let's get out of Chicago
winning two out of three.

Speaker 2 (01:43:15):
There is good news, Jeff. They won the first game,
so they are now allowed to win the series.

Speaker 6 (01:43:22):
Thankfully. We don't have to talk about that for thirty eight. Right, real,
next series anyway.

Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
Real quick, before I let you go, Alexis Daz traded.
They get a young arm in return that's pretty clearly
a couple of years away at best. How did it
end up here? How did things go so south on
Alexis ds?

Speaker 6 (01:43:45):
This feels like one of those, you know, the information
we're not privy to type things because obviously he's been
rough on the mound. I can't find the strike zone,
but he has so many more years of control left
you couldn't get that fixed. There's gotta be some more
to this as far as why they felt that now
was the time to just get out from underneath of them,

(01:44:06):
because honestly, I mean Chad if we're really squinting, really hard,
we can see that they saved like two million dollars
and like, congrats. I don't know how that's going to
help you out the trade deadline, but I guess it's
two million more than you had. But ultimately, I look
at this and say, you know, there were reports and
rumors of other teams being interested in him a year
or so ago. And while it's hard to say that, yes,

(01:44:28):
they missed by not taking not pulling the trigger on
any of those deals, some of those deals involved everyday
ballplayers that they could have had in the lineup right now,
And you really have to wonder if they know how
to evaluate their own talent when it comes to trades,
and are they overvaluing their talent whenever somebody comes calling.
That's kind of the question I've got about Nick cral Now.

Speaker 2 (01:44:51):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's I think fair. But man,
you've got an all star closer that you developed in house.
It's got to be hard to just throw in the
towel early.

Speaker 6 (01:45:05):
Certainly, certainly one of those things that it feels like
people would have questioned them at the time, like why
are you trading them?

Speaker 7 (01:45:11):
Now?

Speaker 2 (01:45:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:45:11):
But I would I would at least say, there's there's
a discussion to have on a guy that you had
no expectations from. He was the last guy on the
roster in twenty twenty two. He'd blossomed into the into
the closer that you had for a couple of years.
But relief pitching is a sickle thing, and even Eric
Gangne fell off a cliff super quick. So I kind

(01:45:34):
of wonder if that's not something they will take with
them in the next year, where it's like, all right,
if we're getting an offer for a guy like Luise
May or something like that, that seems very interesting, and
that depends on if Luise May and stop being a
wild pitcher, then do you do? You look long and
hard at that where I think they probably hung up
the phone rather quickly. Whenever they were getting offers on

(01:45:56):
Diaz a couple of years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:45:58):
They thought they had one of the best in the game.
And man, relief pitching is a that's a cold hard job.
If you're an All Star and then you're being traded
for a guy that's thrown twice in the Arizona Cactus League,
it might have it might.

Speaker 6 (01:46:15):
Have more job security than an sec football coach. But
you you you can probably convince me otherwise.

Speaker 2 (01:46:22):
Yeah, but the last sec one of the one of
those guys got paid seventy million dollars to go lay
on a beach and not coach Alexis Diaz ain't getting that.
Where can they find you, Jeff?

Speaker 6 (01:46:34):

I never have been. And as a matter of fact,
it's funny you talk about music, because I was gonna
ask you a musical question.

Speaker 8 (01:48:34):
Okay, what do you What do you think.

Speaker 7 (01:48:36):
Of post Malones?

Speaker 2 (01:48:38):
I'm okay with post Malone. Like I don't, I don't
seek him out, but I like his music.

Speaker 7 (01:48:44):
He did a country album to Ad that is just
taking this place by storm.

Speaker 2 (01:48:49):
Yeah. I mean he's he's very versatile. He can do
a I mean he's he's done rock, he's done pop,
he's done hip hop, he's done country. I have a
lot of respect for guys that you know, can and
kind of bounce around the spectrum and and be good
at most of them.

Speaker 7 (01:49:05):
You know what he is, well, I was gonna say,
very humble guy. He he was on the Grand Ole
Opry and this was probably a couple of months back,
and the guy just could not have been more embarrassed

(01:49:25):
in a way to be there. You know, he just
he just strikes me as somebody that you really want
to sit down and have a beer with. And he
wouldn't have a problem. I haven't one with you.

Speaker 2 (01:49:34):
Have you ever seen I'd say it's old, but he
would do like apparently his favorite restaurant is the Olive Garden,
So him and jim him and Jimmy Fallon would go
to the Olive Garden and do like this like comedy
skit of them like at the Olive Garden at Post
Malone's favorite restaurant, like ordering food and that it was.

(01:49:57):
It's really funny, it's really good. I would I recommend it.

Speaker 7 (01:50:02):
I'll try and see if I can look that up. Hey,
I did want to ask you. I'm really impressed with
what Wes Miller did this last year. And you know,
I think I know I've spoken about with with Mo
and I think I've talked about it with you. The
thing that they were solely lacking last year was somebody

(01:50:23):
with some some cajone's and somebody that would not only
kind of get in the face of the opposition, but
maybe get in the face of their own guys from
time to time. And uh, and I think just physically
with some of the guys they're bringing in this year,
I don't think you're going to have that problem again.

Speaker 2 (01:50:44):
Yeah, I think that was. You know, it's interesting because
it was the first thing that they did right. They
went and they got Sincere Harris and Kerk Crisa as
their first two commits, and and those two guys play
with attitude. It's a little you know, it's done a
little bit differently, but you know, they didn't have that
last year. They had a bunch of really really nice guys,

(01:51:07):
like I know, Bob, I was around them a ton
great guys. But when the biggest concern, like when the
red flag started going off for me last year, was
they would lose a game or two. And you know,
teams that have that toughness they stop the bleeding or
at least they go down swinging, and it felt like

(01:51:28):
a couple times they'd lose a game or two and
they were indifferent. They didn't look like they hated to lose.
It looked like they liked to win. It didn't look
like they hated to lose. And I think he went
out and got some guys that do a little bit
better job of fitting that description, and that should bode
well in Big twelve play.

Speaker 7 (01:51:50):
I can't tell you how many times I would see
them in a game where they either weren't playing well
or things weren't going great, and Dan Skillings had the
biggest smile on his face.

Speaker 2 (01:52:01):
Like that's just who Dan is, that's his personality. Yeah, yeah,
it's maddening as a coach, I can tell you that.

Speaker 5 (01:52:09):
Well.

Speaker 7 (01:52:10):
The other thing that scared me or frightened me about
those guys was, you know, this was one of the
first years when guys are getting paid and you're thinking
to yourself, all right, if they're making money now to play,
what are they going to be like if any and
not that any of those guys would make the NBA,
but you know, as an NBA general manager, you'd be

(01:52:30):
afraid to say, yeah, I want this guy on my
team because he's a real fighter. Yeah, I didn't see
any of that.

Speaker 2 (01:52:36):
Yeah, I mean it's fair they they did not. They
were not a group that would dig their heels in
and and fight, and there's there's no way around that.

Speaker 4 (01:52:46):
It was.

Speaker 2 (01:52:47):
It was one of the more, if not the most
frustrating thing about watching that team is it felt like
the talent was there, but something just didn't click. And
I think that was a big part of it, is
they just didn't have any guys that, you know, we're
meeting you at your locker after practice or after a
game if they didn't think you were giving your full effort.

(01:53:07):
And that's always been a Bearcat staple.

Speaker 7 (01:53:10):
What's what Scott Sanderfield have to do to keep his job?

Speaker 2 (01:53:17):
I don't I mean, I have a hard time. I
don't think they would fire him at six and six.
I know the fan base will lose their mind about that.
I don't think they would, but it's not gonna win
the fan base over. I think he's got you to
at least seven and probably more like eight, like eight
and four for this fan base to start to feel
a little bit more comfortable with where this thing is going.

(01:53:39):
And look, you've got Dante Corleone, You've got Joe Royer.
You've got now a veteran quality quarterback, and Brendan Soresby.
You went out and got one of the better left
tackles in the portal. You've got a veteran center. Like,
there are pieces in place, and I think I think
the thing for me that if they get their Bob,
you know, I think it's going to be and it's

(01:54:02):
gonna be Tyson biting his defense. I think that defense
is going to allow them to have the opportunity to
go out and win a couple of those close games.
But they're gonna have to figure out offensively how to
finish it off or or there's gonna be a lot
of questions.

Speaker 7 (01:54:19):
Hey, Keed, let me ask you one more question from
hell real quick. The Shafey Center. Is it finished now?

Speaker 2 (01:54:26):
Today is the final day of construction. So after today
the construction company turns over the keys and they are gone.

Speaker 7 (01:54:38):
Is there a place on the internet where you can
see the finished products?

Speaker 5 (01:54:43):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
But what I would say is they are doing like
the the ribbon cutting ceremony June eleventh, and that's going
to be for like the major donors and the media,
and and you know, some a select group of folks.
But I would imagine there is going to be a
crap ton of video that is released that day following

(01:55:07):
it being quote unquote officially opened. So I would keep
an eye out for June eleventh. I'll tell you what, Man,
just standing next to that thing, it is incredible, how
massive of a structure it is. It's it's unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (01:55:23):
The Hilltoppers are in the midst of building one right
now down here. Yeah, and it they kind of have
a problem similar to you see and that they're having
to wedge. Yeah, they're having to wedge things into spots
that you know, there's not a whole lot of room,
but it's nowhere near as big or spacious. But yeah,

(01:55:46):
I want to see that one eventually too. Thanks Chance, all.

Speaker 2 (01:55:48):
Right, appreciate it. Have a great weekend.

Speaker 6 (01:55:52):
Doo man, there we go, Tarn.

Speaker 2 (01:55:54):
That's quick, quick rolled through a Friday, Bearcats win, Red's win.
