ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Here we go Thursday, Lovely Thursday in the Queens City
Moeggars Show hosted by once again not Molegar Chad Brindle
sitting in as we are counter programming today on this Juneteenth.
(00:49):
On Juneteenth, Happy Juneteenth to Tarren Bland.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Thank you wow.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Ally strikes out on three pitches. Now there's a couple
one there, Okay, not many. Red's rally dies in the
bottom of the seventh. They trail the Minnesota Twins nine
to five as we go into the eighth inning at
(01:18):
Great American Ballpark, so we will keep an eye on
that one.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Of course. Last night.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
In a long one, only six innings, but the game
wasn't called until almost midnight. The Reds get a four
to two victory over the Twins to clinch the series.
Great outing from Nick Lodolo. He goes six innings, three hits,
(01:51):
two runs, both of them earned, one of them top
of the first first batter Braxton. Buxton goes deep up
on him, only gives up one run the rest of
the way. So a very strong outing from Lodolo and
as it turns out, didn't need any help. Six anycomplete game.
(02:14):
The game was delayed over two hours to start and
then they got through six and it was canceled after that.
So Nick Lodolo goes six. He picks up the win.
The Reds win the series, but struggling today and it
(02:41):
started early again. Buxton two run a lead off home
run to open the game and t Twins had the lead.
Then the Reds scored two in the bottom of the first,
but then the Twins took control three in the second,
three and the third, two and the fourth, and that
(03:03):
gives them their nine to five lead. As we go
into the eighth, the wind is blowing out. We've seen
the Reds play a little bit better come from behind
baseball of late, winning on Sunday in Detroit and then
Tuesday with a comeback win late, so we'll see if
they can do it again.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Now.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Ellie de la Cruz just struck out with runners on
first and second in the bottom of the seventh, trying
to get a rally going. So you're gonna have to
do it middle and bottom of the order to keep
this thing alive in the eighth and the ninth. As
(03:46):
let's see who is on the mountain now for the
Reds Taylor Rogers is in now for the Reds. It
was a rough one for Nick Martinez. Two and two thirds,
seven hits, seven runs, all, earned only one walk, four strikeouts,
(04:09):
but three home runs, and that was after giving up
three home runs in his last start as well. So
a little bit of a struggle right now for Nick Martinez.
Frustrating of course, but in the scope of things, Nick
(04:31):
Martinez is, I guess you slide him up a spot
with with Hunter Green out, but he's one of your
fourth or fifth guys. I think right now you would
say Abbott, Lodolo, Singer, Martinez and then Miley would would
be the order that you would put him in your
number four guy. You can't be too surprised if he's
(04:57):
a little bit up and down. And that's kind of
where Nick Martinez is right now. I mean, if you
look on the year, even with today instead a four
fifty five era, you'd like that to be a touch lower.
But for a fourth starter, it's not terrible. And because
the rest of the starting pitching has been so good,
(05:21):
you can absorb a guy here and there not having
their best stuff. But that is seven runs and two
and two thirds is not a good day.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
For Nick Martinez. Not a good day at all. TJ.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Friedel continues to play well, continues to play exceptionally well.
He's three for four, he's got an RBI, he's scored
two of the five runs. He's got a doubles or
Steer with a double. Gavin Lux with a two run
home run. Again, the Red's getting the job done with
(06:10):
two outs. Steer, Stevenson, and Friedel have all had two
out RBIs on the day. That has been a very
much a strength of this team over the week, two
out RBIs. But things just got got worse. Ryan Jeffers
(06:35):
with a two run homer out the front door in
center field. Correa scores along with him. Now it is
Twins eleven, Red Legs five this one, so it doesn't
look like it's going to go the way of the
home team. We'll talk to Jeff Carr at five point thirty.
(06:55):
He is at the game today, so we'll get his
thoughts of now. They've still won four series in a
row dating back to the sweep of Arizona. Two of
three from the Guardians, two of three from the Tigers.
Looking like it'll be two of three from the Twins
as they get ready to head to Saint Louis, and
(07:15):
then a pretty tough stretch starting tomorrow. You're battling for
position in the NL Central with the Cardinals and battling
for wild Card position against the Cardinals. So three games
in Saint Louis, then the Yankees here for three, the
(07:36):
Padres here for three to end the month, and then
you go to Boston for three and Philadelphia for three.
Hard to believe we're saying this, but following the Philly series,
three at home with the four at home with the Marlins,
three at home with the Rockies, and we're already we're
already talking All Star break. So we'll continue to monitor
(07:59):
the Reds as they trail eleven to five in the
top of the eighth, not looking good, not looking good
for the home team. We'll talk to Justin Williams, senior
writer at The Athletic, senior writer Tarren. It really wasn't
(08:19):
that long ago. He was just schlepping around here with us.
I remember those are the days. He's big time now,
big time now. But he'll join us as we continue
to monitor a pretty important offseason for college football, and
I'm sure we'll get into the house settlement in nil
(08:40):
but I also want to talk about the college football
playoff format that starting to look like Arran, We're going
to roll with twelve because, to the surprise of No. One,
the Big Ten and the SEC who are in charge
of the college football playoff format do not agree on
what that format should look like. Lovely, although I don't
(09:07):
hate it, like I didn't mind the twelve team format,
and I thought it's ridiculous that after one year the
smallest of possible sample sizes, we're already talking about changing
this thing and.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Doing something different. Exactly, how about we let twelve play?
Speaker 2 (09:27):
I mean, Taran, wasn't it clear to you that there
weren't twelve teams that could win a national championship last year?
Of course, so sixteen is the answer, right, But I digress.
That part is going to be fascinating to watch over
the next couple months because those two sides do not
(09:52):
see things. I've talked about this all week. Those two
sides do not see things the same way. They look
at the health and welfare of the sport from completely
different lenses, and those two lenses are about as opposite
as you could possibly be. So that makes finding a
(10:14):
middle ground very difficult. And that's going to be a
continuing topic today because I also want to talk from
Trey Hendrickson. And while it has been reported that he
and the Bengals are once again in communications, they're talking,
(10:37):
it sounds like these two sides are as far opposite
each other as they can be. The Bengals want twenty
eight million for a year one year. Hendrickson wants more
years on the deal and obviously wants more money. Whether
that's warranted or not is probably for a different discussion,
(11:01):
but the point being where's the middle ground? Generally, if
a negotiation is going to work, it has to feel
like there's a middle ground somewhere in sight. Not only
do they not agree on the length of said deal,
(11:24):
they don't agree on the money of said deal. And
if you're that far apart, it doesn't sound like the
Bengals are in a hurry to budge from their position.
So the Bengals aren't gonna budge, and Trey's not gonna budge.
(11:49):
I don't know what kind of negotiation we have left
to discuss, but we'll get to that here in just
a moment. Let's take a break, we'll talk some more.
Trey hendricks sing and and Bengals here after the break,
and then Justin Williams at the bottom of the hour
(12:11):
more after this. This is the Mowagger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Here.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
It is a show slightly transformed, just a bit of
a break from the norm. Mo likes this one though,
right I know he's anti will Smith, but he's okay
with this one.
Speaker 6 (13:25):
Slightly transform, just a bit of a break from the norm.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Just I think that's the case.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
That hardcourt is that it's gotten to be a little
bit out.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Of gets trying again to put a rally together. Uh
in the bottom of the eighth two on two out,
still trailing eleven to five. You've got espinall McLain and
then friedel so eight nine to one. Right now, the
(13:59):
Trey Hendrickson thing, it's good to hear. Look, I know,
everybody jumps out over their skis and excitement because they
hear that talks have resumed and that's again, that's better
than talks going completely stale like they had.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Over the past couple months.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
And you know, it's a at least an arrow in
the right direction on the Bengals getting something done with Trey, because,
let's be honest, even with his flaws, Trey Hendrickson is
a critical piece of this defense, critical piece of this defense.
(14:45):
I'm not breaking any ground by saying that we all
know that the problem that I see is where do
the talks lead? If you listen to Adam Schefter, the
(15:07):
two sides are talking, but they're no closer to finding
a common ground. The Bengals are pretty set in what
they see. They feel like he's worth twenty eight million
on a one year deal. Trey coming off a year
(15:27):
where he was the NFL leader in Sacks values himself
higher than that. Not only does he want more money,
but he also wants more years, which is understandable because
this is, for all intents and purposes, probably the last
big contract that you see Trey Hendrickson get. I mean
(15:52):
outside of you know, he signs here for one year
and then next year he's back on the market, and
you would hope still has a pretty good value. But
I think the problem that I see is that I
don't I can't find a common ground. I can't find
(16:15):
like you know, with with t Higgins, it got to
the point there was like, okay, it sounds like t
is willing to take a little less because he wanted
to keep this together. He was excited to stay and
catch passes from Joe Burrow and continue his working relationship
with Jamar Chase, opposite each other as the Bengals go
(16:39):
to offensive weapons. There was a motivation there for t
Higgins to get the deal done, even if he probably
could have got a better deal in the open market.
But with Trey, I think it's pretty clear teams are
(17:06):
not willing to one give up the draft capitol. The
Bengals want to trade him, but then two. On top
of that giving up draft picks, then you have to
give him his extension. He's gonna want his money, and
I don't think teams see him in that Miles Garrett,
(17:32):
you know, even like a Chris Jones. He plays inside,
but in terms of defensive line, these big deals that
are setting the market, the Bengals see Tray I think
a little below that. And I understand why they do
(17:57):
when you look at his age and you look at
the fact that he's just not and has not been
a guy that is super aggressive in the run game
and the you know, being able to get out into
space and cause some problems outside of just strictly getting
after the quarterback. And I don't know how those two things.
(18:25):
Trey wanting Miles Garrett money, the Bengal's saying it's more
like twenty eight than it is thirty five, and then
saying we only want to do one year. That puts
everything in a pretty precarious position. I think it's going
(18:48):
to be very hard to find common ground to get
this done. We'll get back to that here in a
little bit. Let's take a break. Justin Williams from the
Athletic Up next. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

I know Terren's excited. It's been a while here on
this program. Tarren wasn't sure if he if he still
had his number he had. He had to dig deep
in his phone, but he makes his return. Senior writer
for The Athletic Justin Williams, Justin, how you been buddy?
Speaker 8 (20:16):
Just some elite bumper music there by ten as usual.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Oh, yesterday we had Keegan on and Tarren played a
wedding song and Keegan was like, they're not playing that
that at my wedding reception.
Speaker 8 (20:38):
I would never Terren, just so you.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Know, unbelievable that guy.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Of course, we did find out during the interview that
his brother were number twenty four in high school because
he was a big Jeff Gordon fan. And I'm guessing
that song probably won't work at the wedding tomorrow night.
Just saying, different crowd, different crowd. I think it's a
differ and crowd, that's all. That's all I'm saying. Justin
(21:04):
we're pasted. It seems like the house settlement was like
a month ago. Now the ever changing college sports landscape.
Now we're working on the calendar. You know, what does
the college football calendar look like? Where are these talks
heading or are we doing? Are we seeing what I
(21:26):
have been predicting since the Big Ten in the SEC
started to take control of things, and that is these
two sides do not see things the same way. They
will never agree on anything and good luck.
Speaker 8 (21:41):
Yeah, it's funny like we'll start on the Big Ten
and SEC because you're right there. You know, they're the
two top dogs, they're the super conferences. And it seemed like,
you know, up until a few weeks, a couple of
months ago, that they were in line that, you know,
they had that agreement in place where they kind of
get to this the playoff, and then it seemed like
(22:02):
they were actually in line with the playoffs. Maybe the
SEC is even going to go to the nine games
and there's gonna be an SEC Big Ten matchup and
all this stuff, and it felt like, you know, all right,
maybe it's not good. Maybe people didn't like that they
were getting along and deciding everything, but it did seem
like they were kind of in locksteps. And then they
had an SEC meeting and the SEC is like, actually,
(22:22):
we're not sure we're gonna go to nine games, and
we're not sure that we like this, you know, automatic
qualifier playoff model, and so everything that seemed like it
was kind of moving towards like it or not the
Big ten and SEC are deciding it. Now we're right
back to no one's in charge, no one gets along,
everyone's looking out for their own self interest. And because
of that now it's it's getting very hard for anything
(22:44):
to get figured out or decided. So you know, it's
kind of like back to back to life as usual
in college sports.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yeah, I mean, I and justin I just think people
have to take a look at this and say the
way that, like when they were talking about the new calendar,
like the new like, are we gonna have a transfer
portal in January? Are we gonna have a transfer portal
in April? And you start hearing the reasons why the
(23:15):
SEC wants to transfer portal in January, the reason why
it's football. It's a football decision. It's what's best for football.
This is why we should do it. And then you
listen to the Big Ten talk about April and they say, well,
it also lines up with the academic calendar.
Speaker 4 (23:34):
It lines up.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Better with the July first fiscal year start. We could
move spring practice or rearrange how spring practice is done
and do OTAs or you know, mandatory mini camps if
you want to steal the NFL terminology in June and July,
and just the the lens that they view the sport from,
(23:58):
justin has never been the same and I.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Don't think it'll ever even be remotely close.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
Yeah, And the other part of that is, you know,
the other the reason the Big ten's thinking, you know,
the April transfer portals because there a lot of them
are on the quarter system, right, So yes, it's it's
the general calendar but also fits their specific calendar. So
you're right, like it's always been this way. But you know,
all this talk about now is a settlement and everyone's
working together with Congress and everyone. There's all this alignment,
(24:26):
and the truth is they're always going to work in
their own self interest, and like when it comes to
these moments, you know, the calendar is like a micro
example of what has always been the macro issue for
the sport in the industry that you know the past
couple of decades is everyone's looking out for themselves. No
one can kind of work together, and that's why it
makes it so hard for for anything to get agreed
upon or to move forward in a like a progressional
(24:49):
positive way.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Is that something that when people talk about, oh, these
the big ten in the SEC are going to break
off and join a super conference, They're gonna they're gonna
create a super league, Like do people have to look
at this and go, oh, maybe that's why that's actually
not going to happen. Because these these two wouldn't agree
on the color of grass, water or the sky.
Speaker 8 (25:13):
It does make it hard to believe that, you know, again,
like the playoffs kind of disagreement here the past couple
of weeks, this calendar stuff, it's a little bit of
a reality check of yeah, they haven't figured out everything,
and this idea that they're going to go off and
be kind of a mini NFL, it's just something massive
is going to have to change for that to be
the case, because, as you said, they haven't been able
(25:34):
to agree on anything. And that's why I think it's
so hard to predict, like whether it's with the settlement
or Congress or the next TV deals or anything. Anyone
that you know tells you they kind of see where
this is going. They're lying because we you know, they
can't even decide on how many playoff teams they're going
to be.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
Are we likely going to end up just back at twelve?
Speaker 8 (25:55):
You know honestly, Like you know, my former colleague Nicole auerback,
I'm not you had a really good column this today,
like we might end up at twelve because they can't decide,
and that might be a good thing. I think a
lot of people liked the twelve team playoffs.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
You know.
Speaker 8 (26:09):
The one big complaint was about the seeding, and they've
actually already fixed that. So this might be another example
of like college sports kind of falling backward into the
right answer that because they can't agree on anything, because
they can't get along, it might end up like actually
working out in their favor, which again is just like classic.
They're arguing so much that it's actually stuck with what
(26:30):
people like by accidents.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Which one are you? And which calendar stuff are you?
Do you like lean towards because the fascinating thing to
me is the SEC puffs their chest out like that
they are the big dog that you know, they've controlled
the sport. They are the juggernaut. But the big ten
makes more money. The big ten has more eyeballs, Like
(26:53):
which way be at the at the calendar be at
the number of the format of the playoff? Does does
either side give and does either side have an advantage?
Speaker 9 (27:06):
That's a good question.
Speaker 8 (27:07):
I don't know that there's an advantage because they're pretty
much they are going to have to agree before anything
gets done, and so far, you know, even though they
seem like little things that they're still divided.
Speaker 7 (27:18):
You know.
Speaker 8 (27:18):
I guess I think if they were to maybe move
it into January, that does make a little more sense,
because I do understand the idea of like these coaches
hate going into spring ball and not knowing if they're
gonna lose players and kind of have to figure things out.
So I understand that amount of it. The thing that
I just keep coming back to, which is, you know,
I guess kind of like copying out on an answer,
(27:40):
but everything that they have done, like they're still trying
to operate within some type of academic calendar, or they're
kind of taking all these half measures with the settlement,
or you know, how they're operating things like there needs
to be kind of a big, major reset, and even
the settlement hasn't done that. And I think everyone thinks that, like, oh,
(28:01):
in the next five to ten years, when the next
TV deals come up, that's going to figure it all out,
whether it's a super League or the Power Conferences breakoff
or whatever. And it feels like right now, everything that
they're doing is just putting off those big decisions that.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Need to get.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
Made because whether it's you know, the sixteen teams in
the playoff or what this calendar look like, it's it's
the fact that they're still operating under this idea that yes,
they have to go to school, and I'm not saying
they shouldn't go to class and all that kind of stuff.
But they're still trying to exist in the old world
while moving into the new world, and it just doesn't work.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
You mean, if you got like three million dollars in
your bank account, you might not feel like getting up
for an eight am econ class.
Speaker 8 (28:43):
Yeah, exactly. If the school that you're playing football for,
you know, is basically paying you to be an athlete,
it might make you kind of wonder like, do I
really need to finish this group project?
Speaker 2 (28:53):
What's that old what's that old line that we used
to love? I didn't come here to play school, Cardial Jones,
Cardal Jones, I didn't.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
Come here to play school.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Oh boy, if you're the Big twelve in the ACC,
are you just kind of sitting back now and going, hey, like,
let's not say a word, Like, let's just let's just
keep it on the low profile right now and let
this work out between these two.
Speaker 8 (29:19):
Look like a lot of this is you know, I
think you give credit or blame however you feel about it.
It's you know, on Brett Yormark in the Big twelve, right,
because I think the Big twelve was really pushing this
five automatic qualifier eleven at large model for the playoff
that got the SEC kind of thinking and moving away
from the Big Ten. And look, I give the Big
(29:41):
Twelve and your Mark a lot of credit because I
think they understand how important narrative is in this. And
even if the automatic qualifiers would help the Big Ten
and the AC seeks that guarantee them two spots, I
think they understand, like, we can't just admit that we're
half of the SEC and the Big Ten, especially with
this new settlement that allegedly supposed to put everyone on
a more even playing field. And so yeah, you know,
(30:03):
I think your Mark's kind of like walking away from
the explosion in the background that maybe he started a
little bit, but I think it was smart by him.
And if you're the ACC or the Big Twelve, it
probably helps you to have the SEC and the Big
Ten at odds because if they start agreeing and they
can decide on everything, it kind of cuts you out
of that process.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
So you're saying, your Mark is standing next to a
burned down house with a can full of gas and
a handful of matches and still wasn't found out.
Speaker 8 (30:31):
It's like, you know, the meme of the girl looking
back with the house on fire in the background. And
again I in this situation, I mean that as a compliment.
I think he understood what his role was in this,
and he's like, I can't make I don't have all
the power of the Big ten in the SEC, but
I can maybe find a way to make my voice heard.
And right now, at least it feels like he's done that.
(30:52):
And I think the Big twelve and the ACC in
a weird way of benefiting from it.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Yeah, it's it's pretty crazy to watch all of the
kind of dominoes start to fall in place. These meetings
are done right, the conference commissioner dealt at the Biltmore.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Yeah, I mean done.
Speaker 8 (31:12):
I guess if you want to even did they even happen?
Like if a bunch of commissioners meet in a room
and nothing happens, did they actually hide? Because and how
many of those we have now every three or four months,
they're getting together in some fancy hotel for two or
three days and then they come out and they don't
have anything. What are they doing in these rooms for
six hours?
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Well, the interesting thing was that Tony Petiti didn't even
show up.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
He was on zoom.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
True that like that gives you an idea of like
how engaged the Big ten is in all this? Right now,
I got stuff to do, like I don't have time
for a week at the biltmore.
Speaker 8 (31:50):
And how many times like there's always some far off
deadline right like right now for playoff expansion, it's December
and they've been talking about that already for six months now. Yeah, yeah,
you know, in January it was well at the year off,
they're definitely gonna figure it out by then, maybe March,
maybe June. And now here we are and it feels
like they're farther apart then, and it's all these long
off deadlines they always end up coming right up against them.
(32:12):
Same thing with NCAA tournament expansion. You know, things just
keep getting kicked down the road again. Sometimes that actually
I think benefits the sport because they kind of, you know,
fall into something that is what fans want. But it's
just kind of remarkable how long and how drawn out
all these processes always seem to be.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
Where are you at on NCAA tournament expansion?
Speaker 3 (32:32):
I mean, yeah, this is another one where it's like,
why are we messing with something that everyone likes?
Speaker 8 (32:37):
You know? I think people kind of rolled their eyes
to play in. And now it's like, all right, mon,
if they want to put two random games on Tuesday
and Wednesday, I'll watch it. I don't like the idea
of expanding it. I'm definitely gonna watch it and probably
be just excited with it if I do.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
I understand it again.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
I understand why they're doing it, which is, hey, we
don't want the Power conferences to run away and break
off and do their own things. Were gonna give them
a little bit extra to kind of keep this intact,
and yeah, in the grand scheme of things, the same way,
I'm watching the playoff if it's twelve teams or sixteen teams.
I'm gonna watch the NCAA tournament if it's sixty eight
or seventy sixteens.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
But I also.
Speaker 8 (33:11):
Understand the exhaustion that fans have because it's like, here's
something that everyone loves. It's pretty much universally considered, you know,
to be great for the sport and for sports fans,
and yet they're kind of trying to find a way
to fix something that's not broken.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
I mean, I guess my thing is if they put
more basketball on, I'm gonna watch it, like I Am
I banging the drum for expansion? No, Like, I think
it's fine how it is. I don't think there needs
to be you know, sweeping changes. But if they're gonna
add four more teams, which is two more games, like, okay,
I'm gonna I'm still gonna turn the TV on on
(33:47):
Tuesday and Wednesday night and I'm gonna watch the opening
like first four games or first eight games or whatever
they're they're gonna be called. Now, Like the uproar just
seems a little crazy to me because every is still
going to sit down and watch those games.
Speaker 8 (34:04):
Yeah, I would say, as long as whatever they do
doesn't screw up Thursday.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
Thursday and Friday right Friday alone.
Speaker 8 (34:10):
Yeah, if you want to put other stuff, you know,
leading up to it, okay, fine. As long as people
can can wake up and watch basketball all day on
those two days, I think people are either going to
watch it or not watch it, but they'll be okay
if we start getting into them, like screw it up
the stuff that people like, which out of it they
kind of did out the playoff, right, Everyone wants to
watch games on New Year's even New Year's Day, and
they changed that a little bit I think as long
(34:32):
as they can kind of leave Thursday and Friday as
two of the greatest days, you know, in sports every year,
then people, whether they watch it or not, they'll be
okay with it.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Yeah, I just just give me more basketball. Yeah, it's stupid. Whatever,
it's for money, I get it.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
But I'll watch more basketball if you put more basketball
on my TV screen. That's That's really the only way
I look at it. Have you gone down you couldn't
make it last Wednesday. Have you made it to the
the IPF yet?
Speaker 10 (35:01):
I have not.
Speaker 11 (35:02):
I need to.
Speaker 8 (35:02):
I need to get in there and see the Bearcat Journal,
you know, sanitary locker or whatever you have all the pictures.
Everything I've seen looks looks pretty incredible.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
It's look justin you know, generally, like I'm bored with
that type of thing. You've been around me long enough
to know like it. You know, I was wowed by
walking into the new fifth third Arena the first time.
That was like, oh my god, they really did this
With that, it might have been even more of a
(35:33):
drastic reaction walking into not just you know, the facility.
The practice field is a practice field, Like the architecture
is awesome.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
It looks great.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
It's picturesque, but it's you know, one hundred and twenty
yard turfed football field. That performance center, man like it
is it is out of this world, out of it.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
I mean, you're you're right at those look great from
the outside. It's kind of a cool building, but it's
you know, it's easy to say like, oh, those things
don't matter anymore in recruiting or whatever with with nil
and revenue sharing. I think when if you're a recruiting
you walk into that building, like, it's certainly not hurting
Cincinnati's chances with the recruits, right.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
No, for sure.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
And now it can't be used against them because that
used to be the thing. Oh, go to Cincinnati, you
get to practice outside in November and December, like come
here and we'll take care of you.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
That's no longer the case, and.
Speaker 8 (36:31):
Now there's just going to be more jokes about how
you know the Bearcats have a nicer practice facility than
the Bengals.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
Right yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
And plus I get to go there like in you know,
the spring, the winter and the spring and watch practice
instead of stand out.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
In the cold.
Speaker 3 (36:47):
That's true.
Speaker 8 (36:47):
See, I mean you know I think that's that's probably
the main reason why they did.
Speaker 4 (36:50):
It's more about me.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Yeah, and justin the word. We might not be taken
as many days driving out to West Harris and Indiana.
Speaker 10 (37:01):
You know.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
I so I wondered about that. What's the what's what's
the plan?
Speaker 2 (37:04):
I think they still go. I just don't think it's
going to be two and a half three weeks. Yeah,
I understand that it doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 8 (37:11):
You don't need to go sleep in a cabin when
you haven't managinoned like.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
You go to the cab, like you go for a
weekend in the woods, right like not you're not going
and spending two weeks in the woods when you've when
you've got a palace at home to go sleep in.
We'll see about that, it's true. But all right, man,
it's been it's been a blast. I appreciate you taking
that a little time to chat with us and tell
the lovely wife and the three young ladies that we
(37:39):
wish them well.
Speaker 8 (37:41):
Absolutely, I will.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (37:43):
And Tigue if you're listening, bobles off my friends.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
A thanks brother.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
See man, all right, that's Justin Williams, senior writer at
the Athletic. Let's take a break Hour number two. The
Reds lose twelve to five. We'll talk about that coming
up after this. Since Not EASYESPN fifteen.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (38:04):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
Right now, over one hundred thousand people are waiting and
hoping for an organ transplant to save their life. Sign
up to be an organ donor or explore living donation
at UCHealth dot com. Slash transplant southbound seventy five. It's
an accident off bound of the right shoulder. That's at
two seventy five and Sharon Bill Over in Greendale, Indiana.
(38:28):
It's another accident and State Road one over at Oberding Road.
I'm at Ezelik with traffic.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
It's ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Here we go, Hour number two, The Mowager Show. Sincecatti's
ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Chad Brendel filling in for today
trags in tomorrow to take you into the weekend.
Speaker 4 (39:14):
Thank you for choosing me.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Tough one for the home team today as the Reds
fall twelve to five to the Twins.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
It was two out runs.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
For the story of the series, it benefited the Reds
to open the series. Today, the Twins score ten of
their twelve runs with two outs. Just one of those days,
Reds pitching could not get off the field, could not
get that final out, and one of those runs being
(39:45):
the leadoff home run from Braxton Buxton. Other than that,
ten of the eleven runs scored by the Twins today
scored with two outs. The Reds multiple times tried to
get back into this one, but the hitching just could
not hold off the Twins, who scored nine runs in
the first four innings, then two in the eighth and
(40:08):
one in the ninth to thwart any idea the Reds
might have had at making a comeback. Nick Martinez gets
the loss two and two thirds, seven hits, seven runs,
all of them, earned only one walk, four strikeouts, but
he did give up three home runs. Nick Martinez spoke
(40:30):
in the post game, let's go down to Great American
Ballpark and hear from Nick I was talking.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
About he thought you your stuff was good today.
Speaker 10 (40:38):
It was just the more about location. You agree with that, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
I agree with that.
Speaker 12 (40:42):
Stuff felt good. You know, it was attacking the zone,
but definitely make some mistakes. You had a stretch of
like very few home runs allowed. And now you've had
like I think eight eight or so in the last
four or five. Have you been able to pinpoint where
things aren't going right for you and they'll look at that. Yeah,
I think it just comes down to execut you know,
I'm giving up the long ball and some hard contact
(41:04):
and that's gonna come down to to location the execution.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
It seem like they were out success to being aggressive
kind of where you pade those pictions.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (41:15):
Yeah, Uh, they were definitely on top of it. Yeah,
they did a good job capitalized.
Speaker 10 (41:21):
Can when you do a game.
Speaker 12 (41:22):
Like that, uh like this, how aware are you of
how hot red hot Buckston is?
Speaker 13 (41:27):
You know?
Speaker 12 (41:30):
Yeah, I mean he's a pretty good player and he's
show him that the last three games. You know, it's
did some pretty good swings on the.
Speaker 4 (41:37):
Ball, football, pretty good about the home state.
Speaker 12 (41:41):
Yeah, uh, series win, that's what it's what's what's all about. So,
you know, I like to get a win, but you know,
to to get a serious wins is what matters. Do
you feel you any adjustments you need to make are
pretty minor at.
Speaker 7 (41:56):
This point, you know, Yeah, I think I do.
Speaker 12 (41:59):
I think it's more more of just the focus right,
more of a more of a focused thing than anything.
You know, the pitch shapes are there, my mechanics feel good,
our body feels good. Just gotta uh, you know, narrow
down the focus a little bit.
Speaker 10 (42:12):
You're gonna say, absolutely, go well, but.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
You guys are stacking winning, shacking series.
Speaker 10 (42:18):
Now, how big would be to get.
Speaker 12 (42:20):
One in the division where it feels like that's been
a little bit harder to come by us?
Speaker 10 (42:25):
Uh yeah this season?
Speaker 12 (42:26):
Yeah, yeah, we're playing really great baseball. I mean, ten
hits today, five runs. You know, it's just a game
that you should win. And you know I didn't didn't
help in any matter for that, but it's part of it.
Just gotta keep going. And yeah, we're winning games and
we're playing really go at baseball and everyone's invested, like
I talked about the other day, and you know that's
(42:46):
that's most important. You know, we're still walking out of
here with a series win, you know, against the team
that expects to be in the playoffs. So we're playing
some good baseball.
Speaker 10 (42:56):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
That's Nick Martinez. He's not worried, but I think it's
fair if you are. And his last two starts, Snick
Martinez has given up six home runs. It doesn't matter
how good your stuff is if you're occasionally leaving a
ball out over the plate that the other team is
depositing in the outfield, seats ten hits, like you mentioned,
(43:22):
five runs. Five of those hits come from two guys,
three of them TJ. Friedel, who was three for five
had an RBI two runs scored, and then Spencer Steer
two for four with an RBI and other than that,
not a whole lot from the offense. Another rough day
(43:45):
for Eli day La Cruz, he had that hot streak
of four home runs in four games, has kind of
hit a slide since then. Zero for four today with
the strikeout. Also got Terry Francona after the game.
Speaker 8 (44:03):
Any think he saw that led to martinez troubles today.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
I thought he had good stuff.
Speaker 14 (44:09):
I thought he made some mistakes and he paid heavily.
Speaker 4 (44:11):
Form.
Speaker 14 (44:14):
Seemed like that was kind of trend all day, even,
you know, even on a couple Engs when we had
too quick house, we couldn't get the third out and
end up driving everybody's pitch count up and led to runs, and.
Speaker 4 (44:24):
It led to kind of an ugly day mid season.
Speaker 15 (44:27):
Now I had every pitcher is going to go through
a stretch with his back to back games.
Speaker 10 (44:31):
He's given up three home runs as it kind of.
Speaker 8 (44:33):
Maybe PAUSINGFLEC time for him, or is it just one
of those I don't.
Speaker 14 (44:37):
Think there's time to reflect. I mean, you better if
you're going to reflect, you better do it quick. He's
pitching against pretty soon. He just you know, again, when
you're when you're not going ninety eight, your margin farers
a little bit less. He just made some mistakes. I
thought his stuff was really good, his breaking ball was
very good. He just he just didn't locate like he
needs to.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
Coming from the al center.
Speaker 11 (44:57):
I'm sure you've seen the capability of so many times too.
Speaker 10 (45:01):
Much, too much, And.
Speaker 14 (45:05):
That's one of those where if you're on if he's
on your team, you can really admire it.
Speaker 10 (45:11):
When you're on the other team, not so fun.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
Buxton on the day three of six two home runs,
four home runs in the series. So that guy was
That guy was a tough out throughout the three game set.
But look, you're playing well. If you're the Reds, you
(45:39):
can't let this one linger. But I don't think that
that should be a problem. I mean, if you remember
this all started, this this streak where they've won what three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
nine of twelve. This all started following a nine to
(45:59):
one beat down at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers.
So it's just a matter of getting back on the horse.
And you know we've seen even in this stretch. They
(46:20):
lost eleven to two to the Guardians last Wednesday and
bounce back. They followed that one with an eleven to
five loss to the Tigers, but then they got back
rolling again and win four in a row. So that's
going to be the important thing. Especially heading to Saint Louis.
Your bullpen is taxed, and a bunch of guys that
(46:43):
through a bunch of pitches today out of that bullpen
for the Reds a bunch. So I don't know if
maybe you'll see somebody come up from the Miners joined
the team in Saint Louis. But Richardson, Suitor, Jebbo, Rogers,
(47:05):
and May none of them really had an easy go
of it, outside of maybe Jebo and still he gave
up two hits and one and two thirds. Suitor gave
up a hit and one and a third, So those
two guys were okay. But Richardson, Rogers and May a
lot of pitches. Now your bullpen is thin going into
(47:30):
a division series on the road, And this is kind
of a big test for me for this team because
we've seen them, maybe not this extended of a stretch
where they played really well over two weeks, but we've
(47:51):
seen where they've had these little bumps, these little hot streaks,
and then they followed it up by giving the games back,
and that is something for this team. At thirty nine
and thirty six, there are only three games over five hundred.
You go have a tough series in Saint Louis and
(48:14):
you're back right around that five hundred mark and you're
battling again instead of riding a wave of momentum. And
we saw that with the Cardinals themselves. They had one
of those hot streaks a week and a half two
weeks ago and they've kind of limped out of that.
(48:38):
And you know the question, I think right now for
the Reds, one of the strengths of this team has
been the strength that they're starting pitching. Hunter Green is
out Andrew Rabbitt has been outstanding. Nicolodolo has had stretches
where he's looked very good, but he hasn't had a
(48:58):
ton of consistency. Brady Singer has been kind of exactly
what you expected when you got him, middle of the rotation,
guy who's gonna eat a lot of innings, but he's
never really gonna, like be a dominant force. And now
you've got Martinez who struggled twice in a row, and
(49:18):
Wade Miley at the back of your rotation. So that
starting pitching that they relied on all the way up
to this point is going to get a test, is
going to get a big test. It's like we talked
about three with the Cardinals and then home for three
with the Yankees and three with the Padres. If they
(49:42):
can come out of this five and four, four and five,
I think you feel pretty good. If they come out
of this and they're back at five hundred, maybe a
little bit below, it's gonna be a dogfight getting where
they want to be by the All Star break. So
(50:03):
it's not time to panic. Nobody's got their finger near
the panic button. But it will be important to see
how this team either maintains momentum or we see them
fall back into that habit of hot cold, hot cold.
This was a longer hot streak than we have seen
(50:24):
yet this season. That gives you reason to be optimistic,
gives you reason to think they've got this thing going.
They've just had a pitcher on the hill today that
didn't have his best stuff. They say had good stuff.
Do you have good stuff if you're leaving stuff over
the middle of the plate? Am I weird for wondering
that tarn guy had good stuff except for the three
(50:47):
times he gave up a meatball for home runs. That's
not good stuff to me. Back to back games, back
to back games, three home runs each game. I think
it's fair to be a little bit concerned about the
veracity of Nick Martinez being a piece of this rotation,
because that's what makes great staffs.
Speaker 4 (51:09):
That's what.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
That's what when you say, boy, the Reds have really
good starting pitching, it's one through five. A lot of
teams have good one twos, one two threes, but then
they get to the backside of that and they struggle
at four and five. Right now, apparently Nick Martinez has
great stuff. He's just not getting the outs he needs.
(51:32):
You have seven runs in two and two thirds, so
put a pin in it. Let's see if Nick Martinez
can get back on track. More importantly, let's see how
the Reds look tomorrow night in Saint Louis.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
Let's take a break.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
Uh you know what, Tarin, Let's do something a little
crazy here, Sincy three to sixty. One of the staples
of Sincy three to sixty is the talkback.
Speaker 10 (52:00):
Right.
Speaker 2 (52:02):
That show has risen to prominence on the back of
its listeners because of their popular talkback segment. Every show,
I'm told Tarn today, James Rapine filled in, did not
do talkbacks. Why don't we do you have access to
(52:25):
the Sincy three sixty talkbacks?
Speaker 10 (52:26):
Tarn, I do.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
Why don't we in the next segment, why don't we
play talkbacks like we were Sincy three sixty Because I
want those people to get their their talkbacks in. I
don't think it's right that they went out of their way.
They left a talkback and it's not going to get played.
It's just gonna get lost in iHeartRadio ether. So when
(52:52):
we come back, if you want to add to it,
just go to the iHeartRadio app, go to ESPN fifteen thirty,
click on the microphone and you can leave a talkback.
If this is a new concept to you, but I'm
going to because I'm a man of the people, Terran,
and this is Terran's idea. By the way, I'm a
man of the people. We're gonna play your talkbacks here
(53:12):
so that you can get them on the air. And Uh,
if you didn't leave a talk back today, or if
you didn't get a chance to for sinc three sixty,
you can get them in now and we'll play those
when we come back right here on the Moe Eggers
Show on Cincinnati's ESPN thirteen.
Speaker 5 (53:27):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (53:33):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 6 (53:35):
Right now, over one hundred thousand people are waiting and
hoping for an organ transplant to save their life. Sign
up to be an organ donor or explore living donation
at ucehealth dot com slash transplant one. It's an accident
before data that one is off onto the right shoulder
on Montgomery Road. Another accident over at Deer Western Drive
(53:58):
in Greendale, Indiana. Uh, it's an accident State Road one
at Overding Road on that he Zell like with traffic.
Speaker 16 (54:05):
This re party the world.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
We're not We're not gonna play the talkback song.
Speaker 4 (54:29):
I guess we won't steal their song to get it naughty,
give the rest in peace, shak a legend of the game.
Speaker 7 (54:42):
Everybody's singing in the place.
Speaker 2 (54:44):
So I can't believe there are people that never figured
out that he was also humpty hump. You know that exists, Tarn.
There are people that thought those are two different people. No, Yeah,
did you never watch a video from Digital Underground? You
never saw a music video anyhow, Let's hear him, aren,
(55:06):
Let's see him up. Let's see what the Sincy three
sixty fans had ready for James Rapine today, even though
James did not honor those fans and play talkbacks.
Speaker 17 (55:25):
Now, that's the dynamic duo of talkback radio, James Rapine
and Tony Pike.
Speaker 4 (55:31):
Huh, they didn't play your talkback, Chad Brindell. How about that.
Speaker 2 (55:35):
It's Chad Brendle for one, and I played your talkback.
They didn't think about that. God, let's get another one.
I'm feeling good now.
Speaker 17 (55:50):
Good days, gentlemen. He's good at a local homer. I
want someone to explain to me how did the Reds win?
It's only six innings. What is it doing? He's made
for screwing with the game.
Speaker 3 (56:01):
Again.
Speaker 17 (56:02):
No, no, no, it's a complete game, Homer. Well then
why don't they just start every game in the sixth inning?
They can't be complete now, that'd be too much like
Trump's Iran policy. I told you never to get political
on this show. I'm sorry, boys, dope, yah.
Speaker 2 (56:18):
Yah, I mean we got it, yah yay In there
was that ice Cube? No, okay, we know ice cubes. Yeah,
we've actually on this show. We've spoken to ice Cube.
Has ice Cube ever been on Sincy three sixty terror?
Speaker 3 (56:35):
No?
Speaker 4 (56:35):
I didn't think so.
Speaker 3 (56:38):
Yeah, yea.
Speaker 2 (56:39):
That was when ice Cube said bye to me and Tarran,
not when he said bye to Tony and Austin. Let's
keep going.
Speaker 17 (56:51):
It's God the red or Hot Hot Hot.
Speaker 4 (56:58):
Okay, good talk about godppreciate it.
Speaker 15 (57:00):
Hey, guys, this is Bulling an easy sponsor, and unfortunately
I had to take a chip around Memorial Day. He
said something about if you can't win a chip on
his own, he doesn't want any of them. I don't know, man, Ballin,
I miss you a similar search you got for nub
If you see Balling hit my line, it's not too late, buddy.
Speaker 4 (57:20):
That must be an inside thing. I didn't get that one.
Speaker 10 (57:22):
Yeah, yeah, me neither.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
What's the deal with Genie Buss?
Speaker 13 (57:30):
You sell your property for ten billion dollars, but you
still want to be in charge of it. Go get
a super yacht, hire a bunch of shirtless yacht boys,
case of viagra, never be seen again, have fun.
Speaker 2 (57:50):
I don't they don't know that Genie Bus needs a
case of viagra. Just say, but this is to, you know,
shed a little light on that. The guy that's now
the owner, the majority owner of the Lakers, was a
minority owner before this happened. He just bought more shares
(58:14):
so that he has a majority control now and the
Bus family still owns a piece of fifteen of the Lakers. Now,
why she would still want to be in charge, I
don't know, Like I agree with that, like it just
take your money, go on, take the money and run.
Speaker 4 (58:33):
I don't know if you know that one or not tearing.
Speaker 7 (58:34):
But.
Speaker 2 (58:37):
I would not be working anymore if if my family
just sold their business for multiple billions of.
Speaker 10 (58:43):
Dollars, especially billions in front of it.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Yeah, b like a B that's lots of millions. There's
a lot of millions in a billion, A lot of them.
Speaker 18 (58:54):
Hey, James, Jeff and New Richmond, Happy Thursday to you,
doing a great job filling in for you. Hey, As
far as Zach Taylor goes, I think if he goes
seven to ten eighty nine and has a slow start,
I think he will get fired. My question is, why
is Duke Tobin's job so secure? His draft picks have
(59:17):
not been great the last few years, another issue with
one this year. Why is his job so secure?
Speaker 2 (59:24):
That's a good question. I'm not James, but Jeff and
New Richmond. James didn't play your talk back, so I'll
answer here to the best of my ability.
Speaker 4 (59:33):
One.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
Zach Taylor is gonna have to tank to get fired.
How many years was Marvin Lewis here, Terren like seventeen
years something like that. He didn't win a playoff game.
He didn't win a playoff game, not a singular playoff game.
Zach Taylor has been to a super Bowl, in an
AFC championship. We know the Brown family, the Blackburn family
is very stubborn. Think they're gonna fire Zach Taylor. I
(59:55):
don't see that. Why is Duke Tobin's job safe? That
is a wonderful question. I wonder that myself many times
when I look at this roster and this roster construction
around Joe Burrow and go, how do we get here? Oh,
Duke Tobin is how we got here? Great question? Last one?
Speaker 3 (01:00:15):
All right, hey James, it's Adam.
Speaker 16 (01:00:20):
You know are you telling me that Tony and Austin
took off Juneteenth? Talk about a couple of guys. It
should be on the hot seat anyway. I was just
wondering what's John Ross up to these days?
Speaker 11 (01:00:34):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (01:00:35):
Shots fired? Shots fired. The juneteent thing is an interesting one, Tarn.
There are not a lot of people of color in
this building. You are the primary one. You are here
on Juneteenth. Yeah, this this building is empty, there's nobody here.
But I have a theory. So if you know the
(01:00:57):
story of Juneteenth, when the slaves were free, they didn't
have the internet back then. It took a while for
word to spread. So Juneteenth is the day that the
slaves found out that they were free. So, Tarran, you've
actually been given a day off. You just won't know
(01:01:17):
about it for a couple of weeks.
Speaker 10 (01:01:19):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
So like mid July, somebody's gonna be like, Tarran, You're
you're free, you got tomorrow off, and you're gonna be
like that's that's very thoughtful of you.
Speaker 4 (01:01:30):
Thank you.
Speaker 10 (01:01:34):
Not really, I was not realizing I was off the
whole time.
Speaker 2 (01:01:37):
Yeah, not realizing you were off the whole time. But
I mean, you know, that's just that's My theory on
why you're here on Juneteenth is, uh, you just haven't
gotten word that you weren't supposed to work today.
Speaker 10 (01:01:52):
Funny theory, but nah.
Speaker 4 (01:01:54):
Probably not. You're right, probably not. Oh well, I just.
Speaker 10 (01:01:57):
Want to work.
Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
Yeah, you're just you're you're You're about that life, Tarren.
You grind, you get the job done, you go to work. Baby,
all right, let's uh, that was fun. It refreshed one time,
just to make sure we didn't get any new ones, Tarran. Yeah, no,
we're good. Okay, we're good. That was talkbacks. Uh, take
(01:02:21):
me out for some talkbacks. I don't remember. You know, talkbacks?
Speaker 10 (01:02:25):
Do do do do talk Let's get the mark before
you don't have Mark Waeda Okay, Mark, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
My friend?
Speaker 19 (01:02:35):
Well that was a tough act to follow. This was
a tough act to follow. But I called to tell
you why Nick Martinez will be the RIDS MVP this year.
Speaker 4 (01:02:48):
MVP.
Speaker 7 (01:02:49):
Okay, MV MVP.
Speaker 19 (01:02:53):
Okay, most valuable play, right, he will win the award
because he's won mostly responsible for getting Nick Krawl fired,
which he should be. Can you believe that they're paying
him twenty one million dollars? Not to mention, that's just
(01:03:14):
part of the forty one million dollars that Nick Krawl
wasted this year with utterly useless players. That's a pretty
big mistake. And you could have had a pretty good
hitter for forty one million dollars. Who's running that asylum
up there?
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
The Martinez one. Shocked because that didn't have to happen.
Speaker 19 (01:03:37):
That he wasn't even that good last year.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
That was an option right like that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:43):
That wasn't like they were stuck with a big contract
on him.
Speaker 19 (01:03:49):
There's no other words to describe it. It's just completely stupid. Yeah,
I mean how that man holds that job being as
stupid as he is. I mean, look at he's got
a guy down here in Louisville making fifteen million a year.
They can't hit major league pitcher he's pitching. He's got
a guy up there on the inactive list that can't
(01:04:12):
stay healthy. He signed them for five million dollars. You
would think there was something wrong. He would have realized
that he wasn't getting much for five million dollars. And
what he's not getting is the guy that can't stay healthy.
Every other GM in the league seem to know that,
but him Mark.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
The problem is they're getting their five million dollars worth.
They're just getting it in like eight game spurts, and
then he gets hurt and he's gone for too well.
Speaker 19 (01:04:37):
And I didn't look at it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
You're right, they're getting They're getting their five million dollars worth.
Speaker 11 (01:04:42):
Uh, let me talk.
Speaker 19 (01:04:43):
Give me one more minute, and I'm going to solve
the Reds problems. Need to hit her. I'm gonna tell
you who.
Speaker 4 (01:04:48):
I Wantxton Buxton.
Speaker 19 (01:04:51):
I want help me with his first name. I want
Carol from.
Speaker 11 (01:04:55):
Arizona Corn Carroll.
Speaker 19 (01:04:58):
Yes, and here's who I'm will to give up for him.
I will give either Jake Freely or Benson, either one
for those They would laugh at you, caller. You're thinking
that I'm an idiot, that they would never.
Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
Make that they would never make that trade.
Speaker 19 (01:05:16):
Okay, I agree with you. I'm willing to throw in
one other guy, okay. And the other guy I'm willing
to throw in his Hunter Green. Now you're thinking about it,
aren't you.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
Here's the reason I'm not. And the only thing that
helps in the Hunter Green situation is they do have
him under contract. They do avoid arbitration with him so
that he gets out of their price range. Which if
they're going to do something with Ellie, they need to
do it soon in a similar fashion because by the
(01:05:49):
time a Hunter Green or an Ellie day La Cruz
goes into arbitration, those numbers are gonna get pretty overwhelming.
Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
I would not.
Speaker 19 (01:06:01):
Let me interrupt you. The problem, the reason I would
trade Hunter Green is he's not what he said to be.
He is injured every year. He does not dominate the
real good teams. Of course nobody does. That's why they're
good teams. Like he does the week teams. He doesn't
win a lot of his games. He will pitch a
(01:06:22):
good game and lose it. You're not gonna get somebody
without giving up somebody. And the Reds need a hitter
worse than anything. It's easier to replace or find a
good pitcher than it is a good hitter. It used
to not be that way, but it is these days.
You could bring up this kid Chase and he could
(01:06:45):
I'm not saying he's end all to end all, but
he's better than the guy that started today, got a
better arm, younger arm. Uh, this team just doesn't do anything.
They never you know, during the Winter Meetings, they're always
in on every very big star that's just gonna get moved,
but they never get them, never never ever get them.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
That's I don't believe that they've ever been on any
of the big stars because they're not going to pay
somebody that went.
Speaker 19 (01:07:13):
From the White Sox to the Red Sox. Every report
on TV during the Winter Meetings, the Reds are in
the finals for this guy. The Reds are one of
the teams interested and if it's not him and somebody else,
yet they never come away with anybody. They act like
they're interested to keep the fan base happy.
Speaker 4 (01:07:32):
That's what it is. I don't think they're ever actually
that involved.
Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
I think they just like it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:39):
They thrown in.
Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
What I said, they like to have their name thrown in,
But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're actually.
Speaker 10 (01:07:49):
Though.
Speaker 4 (01:07:49):
No, it's not.
Speaker 19 (01:07:51):
Yeah, okay, well there's the problem. Well, as a diehard
Bengal hater, let's hope that uh Joe Burrow's arm doesn't
fall off. Actually, I hope it. I'm more worried about
the receivers than I am Burrow without him, without those receivers,
he's nothing.
Speaker 4 (01:08:08):
Okay, I appreciate it. Mark, thank you.
Speaker 19 (01:08:10):
Okay, thanksfully.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
Let's take a break. Phone lines are open. We'll get
to Mike in Indiana after this. This is Cincinnati's ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:08:20):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Traffic from the UC.
Speaker 7 (01:08:25):
Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 6 (01:08:27):
Right now, over one hundred thousand people are waiting and
hoping for an organ transplant to save their life. Sign
up to be an organ donor or explore living donation
at UCHealth dot com slash transplant. He's found two seventy
five after Turkey Foot Road, there's an accident that's off
onto the left shoulder sup on Montgomery Road. It's another
(01:08:48):
accident at Deer Western Drive, and on Galbreath an accident
between Goodman and Klevernook Avenue. I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 7 (01:09:14):
Girl, I must want.
Speaker 4 (01:09:18):
Taranay.
Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
I do.
Speaker 2 (01:09:18):
Look at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Although I will say I
did not realize Corman Carroll had hit twenty home runs
already this year. I was unaware of your power, sir,
I apologize. There is a guy that is on that
(01:09:40):
Diamondbacks team that the Reds probably should still have.
Speaker 10 (01:09:44):
Hey, you win you no butcher? His name will you?
Speaker 2 (01:09:47):
Au Hanio Suarez twenty twenty two he made eleven million,
twenty three, eleven million, twenty four, eleven million, twenty five.
This year with the Diamondbacks he has made king fifteen million.
The Reds couldn't afford that. They've gone out and spent
that on free agents. You know what those free agents
(01:10:09):
didn't do? Taran in that time period thirty one home runs,
twenty two home runs, thirty home runs. He's already got
twenty home runs this year. Yeah, eighty seven, ninety six,
one oh one and through June nineteenth, au Haaneo Sarez
(01:10:31):
this year has fifty eight RBI. Remember who they got
for au Haineo Swarez, No Swarez and Winker to the Mariners, right,
Justin Dunn, Jake Frailey. Yeah, Fairley's had some ups and
(01:10:58):
some downs here, but he's see he's played pretty good,
but he's been, you know, a solid player. Brandon Williamson,
who I like but is does did his arm fall
off where's Brandon Williamson and a player to be named
later that turned out to be Connor Phillips. I'll take
(01:11:21):
what the Mariners got in that trade. If you want
to know who won that trade, let's go to mic
in Indiana. Mike, how's it going.
Speaker 11 (01:11:32):
I'm good. How are you guys doing.
Speaker 2 (01:11:33):
We're doing wonderful. It's a beautiful Thursday here in the
in the Tri State.
Speaker 11 (01:11:38):
Yeah it is. I just couldn't believe the last caller, Man,
I was just you know, it just baffles my mind
how serious these guys are about trade and stuff. But
you know, considering that what the Reds are dealt with,
I think Frank Cone is doing a good job. And
people got to remember that we're only half a game
out of the wild card and we had the young
pitching that we got coming up that's in the minor
(01:11:59):
league that a tear it up. I'm not worried about
this team at all.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
I'm really not.
Speaker 2 (01:12:04):
I'm not gonna say I'm not worried because I think offensively,
there are still some holes that in terms of there's
a lot of teams bunched up for the wild Card,
So in order for this season to be a success.
I would think you should, you know, to walk away
after one hundred and sixty two games feeling good. It
would be the team at least got a wild card
(01:12:26):
spot and played a playoff game. Without that, it makes
me feel like they're a year behind in this plan
with Ellie and Steer McLean and Hunter Green and Lodolo
and that group, it would make me feel like they're
a year behind. I think some of that is on
the front office, because we talked about it throughout the offseason.
(01:12:47):
They needed another bat, They needed another guy in the
middle of that lineup that was a difference maker, and
they didn't go do that. So there's but I'm not
overly concerned because there is enough talent on this team
to be successful.
Speaker 11 (01:13:03):
Oh sure. I think what the Reds were going to
do is that if they weren't going to get the
bat immediately, they were going to see if they were
still in contention. I think and now that we're like,
you know, we're in a good spot where they're gonna
look like we're not out of it, we're still in it,
and I think they're going to try to get a
bat for it. I really do think there's going to
be a trade to go get a big bat, to
say we're gonna do it. We're gonna you know, they're
(01:13:23):
not hiring Francona all this money just to not go
all the way out, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
I mean, but Nick Carl has said that just got
to get healthy, man, Like we don't, we don't need
to make trades. You just got to get healthy, which
I just I hate hearing that every year. That's that's
my hang up with that, Mike is every year we
we're just we're just not all the way healthy. It's
one hundred and sixty two game season. You're never going
to be all the way healthy. You're never going to
be at one hundred percent. So I don't like them
(01:13:52):
falling back on that excuse because that's what it feels
like as an excuse.
Speaker 11 (01:13:58):
Oh, no question about it. I think that I'm actually
kind of surprised though that. You know, Nick Krawl as
bad as the Reds fans are saying in media, he's
got to do something to save his job here, and
he's still kind of messing around like, wow, we're not
sure yet, No, do something to save your job, man.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Yeah, And I would say, like, unless they're they're being
coy about their plans with Chase Burns. With the situation
with Hunter Green right now, I would have gone, like,
go out and get a starting pitcher. You need that
guy right now. You don't need that guy a month
from now, six weeks from now. You need that guy
right now.
Speaker 11 (01:14:35):
I think I read where they're gonna with Chase Burns.
I think they read where they're not gonna panic right now.
They're gonna do a couple more games in Triple A,
let him do what he's doing, and then you know,
because Wade Miley's not gonna last forever on this team,
I really don't think so. And I think they're gonna wait.
They're gonna wait a little bit more. So I'm gonna
guess maybe after the All Star maybe bring him up then,
(01:14:55):
not to panic, let him do what he's doing, and
then bring him up.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
Then.
Speaker 2 (01:14:58):
I do have a problem with that, though, Mike, and
that's the they He's on a pitch count, so they
have an innings restriction on his arm. So there is
only a finite amount of time that you're gonna get
Chase Burns this year, and the more times he throws
for Louisville, the less innings he's going to throw at Cincinnati.
(01:15:20):
That's my concern with that. If he is in the
plans for this year. If he's not in the plans
for this year, and it's dumb, but I get it
leaving him down at Louisville to let him develop. But boy,
if he keeps throwing in Louisville like he did the
first two times, He's not gaining anything by pitching in Louisville.
Speaker 11 (01:15:39):
I gotta say, you know, you got out of all
the people who would do sports talk in this city,
you got to be the most one that has the
most common sense. And I really do mean that. I
don't say that very often. I appreciate you make the
most sense out of everybody out here.
Speaker 8 (01:15:52):
Man.
Speaker 11 (01:15:52):
You just you got to get a raise or get
your own show. I mean that at the bottom of
my heart. Man, your ratings would go through the roof.
Speaker 2 (01:16:00):
Appreciate that, Mike, thank you so much. The checks and
the mail, Buddy Tearing get his address. I appreciate that.
I'm self deprecating with my humor, but I appreciate that.
Speaker 10 (01:16:19):
Mic.
Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
That means a lot to me. Let's take a break.
Brenhaman and Jones on baseball. Right after this Cincinnati's ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:16:27):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 6 (01:16:32):
From the UC Health Traffic Center. Right now, over one
hundred thousand people are waiting and hoping for an organ
transplant to save their life. Sign up to be an
organ donor or explore living donation at UCHealth dot com
slash transplant. On West Scale Breath, there's an accident between
Goodman and Clever Nooka Avenue westbound Taffed Road. Another accident,
(01:16:54):
this one at Hackberry Street. Police are there on the
scene and on Third and Broadway, epic lights on not working.
Use caution on that ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 1 (01:17:06):
No one covers the Bengals like ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
sports station.
Speaker 4 (01:17:27):
All right, let's do it, hour number three.
Speaker 2 (01:17:31):
Of my three day run here in the big chair
for the Mowagger show Man.
Speaker 4 (01:17:46):
Thank you for choosing me.
Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
Mark still got me a little gassed up, Karen, I
don't know that anybody's when. When's the last time somebody
called me reasonable? That threw me off?
Speaker 3 (01:17:59):
Ready for that?
Speaker 13 (01:18:00):
No?
Speaker 10 (01:18:00):
Not to react?
Speaker 4 (01:18:02):
I mean, how could I.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
We got Jeff afaf Car Jeff for three s coming
up at the bottom of the hour, coming up at
five thirty. He was at the game today, so we
will uh, we will get his thoughts. Phone lines are
open until then five one, three, fifteen thirty. If you
want to talk, you wanta tell me how great I am?
Give it a call. Uh you said we had a
(01:18:30):
we had a straggler talkback, tarn we did.
Speaker 4 (01:18:33):
Let's get to that. I want to hear that.
Speaker 10 (01:18:34):
That's I don't even know who you played this because
if Martin got you, this guy might Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:18:38):
Oh, here we go. Hey, it's jeffrom c when you
host the show. Zach Taylor is no way in the
hot seat.
Speaker 8 (01:18:46):
When they made that Super Bowl, I told my son,
who's a teenager now so still learning the.
Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
Ways of the Bengals. I was told, when this.
Speaker 11 (01:18:52):
Meets, we got another ten years of Zach Taylor, no
matter what.
Speaker 2 (01:18:56):
Happens all on maybe and look like the thing was
Zach Taylor and his tenure with the Bengals. We know
who makes this call, right, This isn't hard. If Joe
Burrow wants Zach Taylor to be his head coach, Zach
(01:19:19):
Taylor will be the head coach of the Bengals. If
Joe Burrow decides that Zach Taylor isn't the guy to
get them over the hump and win a Super Bowl,
then you'd probably be looking for a new head coach
to coach the Bengals. That's just I've never seen this
(01:19:42):
franchise treat someone the way that they treat Joe Burrow,
and Joe has earned it rightfully, so that's not I mean,
it's kind of refreshing that they have been sensible enough
to say, we got to do whatever we can to
keep Joe happy because we saw what happened the last
time we had a number one overall pick quarterback that
(01:20:05):
had all the talent. I think Joe's better than Carson Palmer,
but Carson could have had a great career as a Bengal,
and halfway through it he just decided he was fed up,
didn't want to do it anymore. He didn't want to
put up with it anymore. They're doing what they can
(01:20:27):
to make sure that doesn't happen with Joe. Make no mistake, though,
If Joe went in there tomorrow and said, I'm starting
to think Zach's not the guy, Zax Cas would be numbered.
But from everything we know, Joe Burrow loves Zach Taylor.
(01:20:48):
Joe and Zach have a great connection, and Zach's got
a Super Bowl in an AFC Championship on his resume.
Speaker 4 (01:21:00):
It's gonna be a while.
Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
Zach Taylor gonna be the coach for the Bengals for
a while, unless Joe Burrow says otherwise, and I just
don't see that happening. I think the more fair question
is Duke Tobin. There have been small windows where the
Bengals have drafted well. There's essentially been one window where
(01:21:28):
the Bengals were active in free agency and successful in
free agency. The rest of the time they have not
drafted well. The players they have drafted have not exactly
developed as a whole. Are there some that have, yes,
(01:21:55):
But in the NFL to maintain success, especially now that
you have the big money quarterback and has been two
big money sidekicks, the Bengals have not to this point
done a good job over the past three four years
(01:22:16):
building up to that.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Because you know, right, you.
Speaker 2 (01:22:20):
Get the number one pick, and you get the number
one pick in a year where there's a generational quarterback,
you know this clock is ticking three four years until
that guy's under contract four or five years until the
money really starts to kick in. We got that much
time to get ready for it. You don't get ready
for it when the contract hits. You get ready for
(01:22:45):
it a year two years in advance. So then the
contract hits and you're in a good spot. You've got
your guys on their rookie deals. Yeah they're going to
be coming up in two three years, but you're in
a good place. That didn't happen. What happened instead was
the defense hit rock bottom after Joe signed his deal
(01:23:09):
with a bunch of young guys that were drafted and
not really developed at that high of a level. So
why is Duke Tobin safe?
Speaker 10 (01:23:27):
You want?
Speaker 2 (01:23:27):
You want to know what? I always had a problem
with a guy who thinks he's so smart he doesn't
need more help. And by that, I mean they have
the smallest front office, that is the smallest scouting department
in the NFL. And when they asked Duke Tobin about it,
(01:23:47):
I got what I need.
Speaker 4 (01:23:50):
I don't need.
Speaker 2 (01:23:51):
I don't need what every other team has. Boy, you
you better be the Philadelphia Eagles. If you're gonna take
that stance, you better be a team that is elite
at draft and development. You better you legit better be
losing a guy or two every year because you've done
(01:24:12):
so well you can't keep them all.
Speaker 4 (01:24:18):
And you're like, all right, well we need and I'm not.
Speaker 2 (01:24:20):
Talking about Jesse Bates, t Higgins, Trey Hendrickson. Those guys
are at the top of the league, elite guys. Those
are guys that you know, top three four guys at
their positioned, some of them top one guy at their
position in the NFL. You keep those guys, but we're
(01:24:43):
not seeing a bunch of guys go into free agency
because the bank you can't keep them all.
Speaker 4 (01:24:48):
Can't keep them all. They got a draft and developed.
Speaker 2 (01:24:52):
Before you, before you you run into the problem you
can't keep them all.
Speaker 4 (01:24:58):
Why is Juke Tobin saying?
Speaker 2 (01:25:02):
What exactly has Duke Tobin done to make him untouchable
as a director of player personnel for this franchise? Essentially
the GM because they won't hire one of those that
would be introducing a body with more power than they're
(01:25:23):
willing to secede. But that's the part I don't get,
Like I've come to grips with the fact that, look, man,
Marvin was here for a long long, long time, didn't
win a playoff game, kept his job, kept getting extensions.
I really think they're going to get rid of Zach
(01:25:45):
a couple of years removed from a super Bowl in
an AFC Championship game. But Duke Tobin drafted Joe Burrow
and Jamar Chase. Mean, there's a golf club sitting in
the studio that could have done that. Take Burrow one.
(01:26:10):
Take one of his best friends that played with him
in college and has a built in connection and is
an elite talent. Take that guy the next year, top five.
I could do that in a year where what four
quarterbacks went one, two, three, four, And he couldn't have
(01:26:31):
messed that up. It it was Jamar or Piney Seul.
Both of them are all pros. Both of them are outstanding.
You can't mess up Burrow. You can't mess up the
guys the next year. But what else t Higgins and
dot dot dot. So if you want to ask the question,
(01:26:54):
how is Zach Taylor safe? Is he on the hot seat?
You just have to be a purveyor of history to
know that's probably not true. And now if they go
four and thirteen, the president of Operations, Joe Burrow probably
(01:27:17):
isn't gonna be too upset if you're looking for a
new head coach. But what not eight and nine, nine
and eight and missed the playoffs, There'll be a lot
of people talking about the hot seat. Just have a
hard time believe in Zach will be on. It doesn't
(01:27:41):
make a whole lot of sense to me, given all
the context clues. I guess under that same vein, doesn't
make a whole lot of sense to wonder why dude
Tobin is safe either, because he's been here through a lot,
a lot of good, a lot of bad, and they
haven't even flinched to move on from that.
Speaker 4 (01:28:10):
Scratch my head on that one. Let's take a break.
Speaker 2 (01:28:16):
We'll recap the Reds loss this afternoon, and then hearing
about fifteen minutes, we'll talk to our good friend Jeff
Carr from Lockdown Reds who is at the game today.
We'll get his thoughts marked to this. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:28:33):

Speaker 9 (01:29:09):
This hoppen stopping, hopping like a rabbit. When I take
that email, want you nobody that's that happening, I lay
it back into retain myself, think about this place to
(01:29:30):
wear out. Then I'll make some money.
Speaker 2 (01:29:32):
You know, this is a risk of me not talking
ship the third verse versus the best verse.
Speaker 3 (01:29:40):
That upon the stone, slow dog don't and.
Speaker 4 (01:29:43):
I'll listen all the way to the third verse and
through it after.
Speaker 3 (01:29:48):
Them like he's had a holy Field jail episode.
Speaker 4 (01:29:52):
I make money and I really don't love tell you
the truth.
Speaker 2 (01:29:56):
I moved the Crew Moager show since that E's ESPN
to tea Chad Brindle in for for one more day
and then Keegan Nickoson's wedding tomorrow. Then I go on
vacation Tarran, and then I the day I get back
from vacation. I'm back here. A glutton for punishment, the
(01:30:19):
glutton for punishment. It's a I love the game, Arren,
just just a guy that loves the game right there
with you.
Speaker 4 (01:30:29):
Fuck you way more than me.
Speaker 14 (01:30:31):
Bro.
Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 2 (01:30:37):
Uh, twelve to five Reds fall to the Twins. Rough
one for Nick Martinez, who uh gives up seven runs
two and two thirds innings, seven runs on seven hits.
He gave up three home runs and two two and
(01:31:00):
two thirds. Lion Richardson gave up two, Taylor Rodgers gave
up two, Louis May gave up one, and add all
that up. It is twelve for Minnesota as they get
out of here without being swept. But the Reds did
(01:31:23):
win the series. They have won four consecutive series, they
have won nine out of their last twelve, and they
still have some momentum going into a pretty big three series,
and you know, you could even bump it out one
or two series after that, but really in the immediate future,
(01:31:45):
Saint Louis on the road, Yankees at home, San Diego
at home, all between now and the end of next week,
so a big one to see if they can keep
this thing rolling. Like I've said, like my key for
being a successful baseball team, and you're gonna go on
(01:32:06):
little dips and losing streaks, but for the for the
most part, like the in the big picture, when you
have these little you know, nine of twelve, which which
puts you you know, it's a six game improvement on
five hundred, you can't give it back like in a blink.
(01:32:27):
And that's what the Reds have done so far this
year is every time they hit one of those little
speed boosts, you know, they they hit the turbo button,
they immediately have fallen back in honor of the switch
to coming out Tarren with Mario Kart World Love Mario Kart. Like,
(01:32:49):
you know, they hit the little the mushroom to get
the speed boost, and then as soon as they get
the speed boost, somebody hits them with the turtle, the
green turtle, like the annoying one, like the red turtle
that like locks in on you.
Speaker 10 (01:33:01):
Yeah, that's why I wish turtleshow.
Speaker 2 (01:33:04):
Yeah, the green turtle show, the one that just randomly
is like bouncing off walls and just smashes into you
because because you're too stupid to get out of the way.
Speaker 10 (01:33:15):
It might be the first time ever more of THEO
Car reference has been made on the show.
Speaker 2 (01:33:18):
I look, I you know, I've been getting compliments today.
I gotta step my game up making Mario Kart references.
I haven't bought a switch to yet, tarn Key wording
that yet. Well, I mean, really, the only reason I
play Nintendo is for Zelda. I'm a big Zelda guy.
(01:33:44):
And the new Zelda just came out two years ago.
They're not going to have a new Zelda for a
couple more years, so I've got some time. I don't
have time to sit and play. Like look, I know,
I know from my late teens early twenty how many
(01:34:05):
hours can be lost playing Mario Kart. Especially. Have you
seen I've watched a little bit of it on Twitch.
Have you seen what the new game mode is tarren No.
You start out with twenty four carts. It's online shut
out with twenty four carts. It's a six lap race,
and every lap they knock it down four So after
(01:34:27):
the first lap you have to be in the top
twenty or you're out, And then sixteen, and then twelve,
and then eight, and then the final lap it's just
four carts.
Speaker 10 (01:34:38):
So are kind of adopted the Fortnite.
Speaker 4 (01:34:40):
A little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:34:41):
Yeah, but boy, if I bought a switch to, it
would be four o'clock in the morning and I would
be playing that game like I just know it, I
know how I am. I'd get done with all the
Bearcaut journal stuff. I'd get everything published and put up
for the night, and then the sticks would pop out
and it would it would not be good, not be good.
Speaker 10 (01:35:04):
You might have get one on those nights. Way you
can't sleep, you.
Speaker 2 (01:35:06):
Know I'm gonna I need, but I need to try
to sleep, like I My answer for not being able
to sleep is just to not stay It shouldn't be
to stay up all night.
Speaker 4 (01:35:16):
I'm too old for that, Terran.
Speaker 10 (01:35:18):
What would the coaches say? Wes and Scott say, why
why you're sluggish? I'm up by Memorial Court.
Speaker 2 (01:35:25):
I was up until five am playing Mario Card just
could I couldn't get past the top four, Coach, I
couldn't get past the top four.
Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
I was trying.
Speaker 10 (01:35:35):
Although you could probably recover and then new Indoor pexas city,
I could.
Speaker 2 (01:35:38):
They got it like a nap room, hyperbaric chamber, Like yeah,
Eric could probably get me right, Let's take a break.
Speaker 4 (01:35:47):

Speaker 3 (01:36:49):
You can be off?
Speaker 4 (01:36:50):
Jeffs Jeff, what do you think new intro, new walk
up song for Jeff Carr.
Speaker 3 (01:36:56):
I'm all about it. I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:37:00):
Okay, Tarn Taran putting in some work today, Jeff ff Carr.
Welcome in none other than Jeff Carr. Locked on. Rad's
one of the biggest voices in the market for Red's coverage,
and for good reason. The man knows this stuff. Jeff
you were at the game today. This is a frustrating result,
(01:37:24):
but ultimately sometimes you just have to look at it
and go it wasn't.
Speaker 4 (01:37:26):
Their day.
Speaker 3 (01:37:29):
Exactly. And to be honest with you, I mean Nick Martinez.
Now it's two starts in a row where he's giving
up a lot of hard contact, and more than I
mean it's two starts in a row, he's given up
three home runs. So something to watch moving forward. I
don't think I'm necessarily taking away from it that they
really need to reevaluate Nick Martinez at this point, but
(01:37:50):
it was a tough outing that I almost thought Tito
left him in too long.
Speaker 2 (01:37:55):
For Tito after the game, I don't know how much
you've been able to catch up on. But after the game,
Nick had good stuff. Uh do you buy a guy
having good stuff when he gives up seven runs in
two and two third innings and gets hit hard the
whole time. That's to me, you don't have good stuff
if that's what happened.
Speaker 3 (01:38:17):
Absolutely not. And his second home run that he allowed
to buy Ron Buckston was a center cut, middle middle
seventy seven mile an hour change up. I don't know
how that is defined as good.
Speaker 4 (01:38:29):
Stuff, just bad location, Jeff, just bad location. That's not
good stock.
Speaker 3 (01:38:34):
Good stuff right, good good stuff, bad location like wrong time,
right place or I don't know what. Yeah, that's kind
of a weird way to spend that. And Tino is
always going to go to bat for his guys for sure,
But I don't I don't subscribe to that theory at all.
Speaker 2 (01:38:49):
Isn't it just like for me, isn't it just easier
to say God didn't have it today, like you know,
sometimes it's not there.
Speaker 4 (01:38:58):
He just he went out.
Speaker 2 (01:38:59):
I thought he battled, I thought he worked hard, but
he just didn't have his best stuff today. Instead you
go up there and you go, he had great he
had really good stuff today, Like you're just like you're
you're asking me to disagree with you.
Speaker 3 (01:39:14):
Right, And I think too that that just follow us
along with some of the messaging of the organization over
the past few years where it's like we know what
we see, just you know, like level with us a
little bit. Well, yeah, like don't try to feed us
something that we understand is not exactly what we saw.
We saw what we saw. Yea, he did not have
his best stuff, he had bad stuff. He was getting clobbered.
(01:39:38):
I think there was a stretch there where five straight
guys came to the plate and whether or not the
ball was caught, they hit a ball into play at
a hundred or at over one hundred miles an hour.
That is not good.
Speaker 4 (01:39:50):
It's not It's just I don't like having my intelligence insulted.
Speaker 10 (01:39:55):
Jeff.
Speaker 3 (01:39:56):
Yeah, no, I agree with you.
Speaker 4 (01:39:58):
I don't have much, but right, I'm not that smart.
Speaker 2 (01:40:00):
Like, yeah, I went to public school in northern Kentucky,
like you know, I went to I went to public
college in West Virginia.
Speaker 3 (01:40:10):
You know, I'm not like in central Kentucky. I'm not
with you.
Speaker 4 (01:40:13):
I'm not working with a lot here.
Speaker 2 (01:40:14):
Just don't insult the like the two guys in you
know the You ever seen the Old Family or the
Family guy one where there's like three guys in there
and two of them die and then he drops his
reading glasses right as he's going to be like the
only like the King brain cell or something like that.
I made a Mario Kart reference earlier too, So I'm
spiraling out of control at the end of day three
(01:40:35):
here from I don't have my best stuff, Jeff, I
can admit it.
Speaker 4 (01:40:38):
I don't have my best stuff. Offensively.
Speaker 2 (01:40:45):
They're they're they feel like things are starting to round
into form. They're still going to have bad days, but
it doesn't feel like right now, and I knock on wood,
it doesn't feel like right now. They're as as prone
to every third day they score one run and get
(01:41:05):
three hits.
Speaker 3 (01:41:07):
Yeah, it's kind of crazy to think that. If there's
anything you can glean as far as the silver lining
from a seven run loss, it's the fact that the
Reds scored five runs, and really, in most cases, when
you score five runs, you expect to win. And the
way that they did that was not with the just
one big inning and then they went to sleep. There
(01:41:27):
was you know, a little bit here, a little bit there,
and it looked like, for a minute, you know, the
Twins had a big inning to get up to seven runs,
and then the Reds answered immediately with two runs in
the bottom half of that inning. You're thinking, okay, yeah,
this could be an interesting thing. And then just the
pitching continued to implode from that point, and then I
(01:41:48):
think that affects the morale of anybody in the lineup,
where all right, how many do we need to score today?
So ultimately I thought that there were some good days
of the plate. I mean, you had a three hit
day from TJ. Friedel, you had a moll I hit
game for Spencer Steer, Matt McLean hitting the ball hard.
Still he got a hit, keeps his hitting streak alive.
And while Will Benson didn't get a hit, he definitely
(01:42:09):
had a couple of interesting if that's there. So I
think ultimately this was a solid day for the lineup.
It's just the fact that the pitching blew up as
bad as it did means that whatever the lineup did
didn't really matter all that much.
Speaker 2 (01:42:23):
Are you worried about the number of pitches from the
pen today as they go into Saint Louis.
Speaker 3 (01:42:30):
Didn't love it, but I think that Tito did a
great job avoiding throwing anybody that he really needs to
win a close game in Saint Louis. I think the
Brent Suter is an important pitcher when it comes to
long innings and a guy that you need length from.
And Lyon Richardson is getting there as far as his
(01:42:50):
development in this bullpen. But ultimately Tony Santian you didn't
see anything from him, and you didn't see anything from
MEO EO Pagan, So I'm it's kind of okay with it,
because I hope we see some better starts from the
guys this weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:43:07):
Three with the Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (01:43:10):
In Saint Louis, then back to Cincinnati for three with
the Yankees and three with the Padres. They are coming
off a stretch where they have played exceptionally well for
two weeks. How important is it to at least hover
around five hundred over these next three series to put
(01:43:30):
yourself in a position to finish strong going into the
All Star Break and to not because they are only
three over. This is not a team that has built
a considerable cushion for themselves going into three tough series.
How important is it to four and five, five and four,
you know, if all things go grade six and three like,
(01:43:53):
is it key for them to make sure they kind
of tread water here if not do better?
Speaker 3 (01:44:00):
Oh? Absolutely, I think that that's the expectation moving forward.
If the Reds are contenders, they will at least get
to the home stretch. There are seven games right before
the All Star Break that they play the Rockies and
they play the Marlins, And if they can get to
that stretch around five hundred, like give or take maybe
(01:44:21):
one or two games. Then you're talking about the Reds
hitting expectations right now. If they can continue where they're
at around three or four games above five hundred, then
they're exceeding the expectations because they are playing the toughest
part of their schedule all year long. It's just now
(01:44:41):
you add in the fact, okay, tough part of your schedule, yes,
and then you're also going to get lots of left
handed pitching. That's going to be the hard part.
Speaker 2 (01:44:51):
Hasn't gone great against the Left's If it feels like
like twenty years, I mean, if we're being honest.
Speaker 3 (01:45:00):
It's been eighty four years. That gift, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:45:04):
Yeah, the Titanic, the Old Lady from that did spend
eighty four years.
Speaker 3 (01:45:09):
The good news is, I mean, they've gotten some good
updates on Austin Hayes, hopefully we see him back soon
and Noel Vie Marte starting a rehab assignment tomorrow in Louisville,
not in Arizona. I think is also pointing to the
ability to get him back quicker than we expected.
Speaker 2 (01:45:26):
How big is it to get those two guys back, Specifically, it.
Speaker 3 (01:45:31):
Means you don't have Connor Joe and Garrett Hampson taking
at bats.
Speaker 4 (01:45:36):
On the roster. You don't have them on the roster
even normal moments.
Speaker 3 (01:45:39):
Yeah, yeah, you don't even have them on the roster.
Any those should definitely be the moves. And I don't
really know what the argument is outside of those two guys,
Like you could squint and say Santiago Estanal, But honestly,
those are the three guys that you're looking at whenever
these next couple of players come back, and then Jammer
Candelario is also knocking on the door too.
Speaker 2 (01:45:59):
Would you would you maybe look around make some calls
and say, hey, anybody got a starter for one of
these guys.
Speaker 3 (01:46:09):
I think that there's a package to be had somewhere
as far as like putting together a couple of different
players and maybe upgrading a spot in the line up
for the reds. The problem is going to be who
is willing to deal right now? And I just don't
know that there is anybody.
Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
Yeah, the Red Sox were ready to deal, they just
they didn't tell anybody. The Giants called them and said, hey,
we would like your guy. Like sometimes you're trying to
buy a house, you got to be a little more aggressive.
You drive around, you find a house that you like.
It might not be for sale, but you go knock
on that door, and if the person doesn't shoot you,
you say, hey, I'm interested in your house.
Speaker 4 (01:46:45):
Sometimes you got to be aggressive.
Speaker 10 (01:46:48):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:46:48):
That is a spectrum right there. But yeah, as far
as well.
Speaker 2 (01:46:51):
I mean, you can't just go knocking on people's doors anymore, Jeff,
It's it's not like it was twenty five years Like,
you can't just go banging on doors and asking people
if you can buy their house like he used to.
Speaker 3 (01:47:02):
Right, No, But I know what you're saying. Like, if
Nick Grahl was on the phone at the time instead
of the Giants drow manager, what would have happened? Let
have added that payroll. That's the only big question is
that would Podcastelini and Phil Castelini sign off on two
hundred and fifty million dollars over the next decade. Probably not,
But that would have made the lineup a lot better.
Speaker 2 (01:47:24):
Yeah, the last time they did that, they wasted the
career of a Hall of Famer and one of the
best hitters ever.
Speaker 3 (01:47:29):
Hey, at least we could find a new player to
blame everything on.
Speaker 2 (01:47:33):
I digree. Yeah, it now it's Ellie's fault. Does that
get under your skin at this whole? Like I keep
hearing like Ellie's not living up to expectations, and like
every time I look, he's doing something that nobody else
has ever done.
Speaker 3 (01:47:48):
Right, And actually, if you look at everybody's favorite thing, right,
they always talk about his strikeouts. Do you know who
has more strikeouts than Ellie de la Cruz does at
this point in the season.
Speaker 2 (01:48:00):
Claim, oh, show an antony. I'm sorry, I was thinking
Matt McLean did it far less time. Kidding, kidding, yeah,
but like there are things that he's doing that be
it age, you know, hitting these milestones by this age,
(01:48:22):
or like you marvel at it, and then you listen
to the narrative, and the narrative is he's not doing enough.
Like I think that's a an expectations problem on on
the fans end. It's not something Ellie's doing wrong, It's
that the expectations of him are are so grandiose that
(01:48:42):
even when he's great, people look at him and go,
not great enough.
Speaker 3 (01:48:47):
Yeah, he's got to be hitting five hundred with a
fielding percentage of one thousand, making no errors whatsoever, right, right, Yeah,
that's kind of what it feels like.
Speaker 2 (01:48:56):
You've worked in this business, you know how awesome. Uh,
listener phone calls are I got one earlier. I'm gonna
throw this trade proposal at you. We're firing up the
trade machine. Okay, let's go Hunter Green for Corbyn Carroll?
Speaker 3 (01:49:13):
Done?
Speaker 4 (01:49:14):
Done? You do that one.
Speaker 3 (01:49:16):
I would do that one. I don't know that Hunter
Green's making thirty starts.
Speaker 4 (01:49:21):
I don't think he's not this season. I'll tell you
that much.
Speaker 3 (01:49:25):
That would definitely not this season. That's the tough part
about it, right, Like, I know when Hunter Green is
on the mound, he is going to be elite. But
how much is he going to be on the mound? Yeah,
because he has never been in better shape than he
is this year, and we're still talking about these little
(01:49:45):
nagging injuries that are keeping him off the field. It's
never been the big thing, right like knock on wood obviously,
but we're not We've never been talking about a narm
injury with right, Hunter Green. It's always something else.
Speaker 4 (01:50:01):
He did have a Tommy John right, Yeah, but he
was in the minor league.
Speaker 2 (01:50:05):
Yeah, I mean he did have one, and it's it
hasn't been since he's been in Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (01:50:10):
Correct, I was just making sure I wasn't crazy. I
thought I remembered one.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
Yeah, you're you're yeah, you're definitely right there. But like
if you're talking about you get a huge upgrade. And
again that's a totally hypothetical trade. I would not expect
the Diamondbacks to be doing that. But if that were
on the table and Nick Crawl said no, I'd be like,
excuse me, sir, can we get somebody else in here
on the phone, because that that would be a big
(01:50:37):
time deal that. I think that the Reds would still
be able. I mean they're pitching staff next year, Red
Louder is going to be healthy, Chase Spurns is going
to be ready. I think Chase Petty is going to
be better. You're also going to get back Brandon Williamson
and Julian Agi are like the idea of the of
the big trade for Hunter Green and there is nothing
(01:50:57):
you could you could accept Hunter Green. I think there's
some trades that you could do now they would be huge, ye,
like the listener proposed there, But yeah, I would do
that trade.
Speaker 2 (01:51:09):
I did not realize Corbyn Carroll already has twenty home
runs this year.
Speaker 3 (01:51:14):
Corbyn Carroll is amazing.
Speaker 4 (01:51:17):
Yeah, I just didn't think of them.
Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
Yeah, I thought of him as more like a twenty
He had been to this point, like a twenty twenty
five home run guy to have twenty by the middle
of June. Like, Okay, there's a there's a term we
used to use for guys that made that kind of
jump from year to year.
Speaker 3 (01:51:39):
In the nineties, and I think that, you know, like
guys like that. There's a difference between a really good
player and a superstar level guy, and Corbyn Carroll is
a superstar level guy.
Speaker 2 (01:51:51):
Yeah, I just I was interested in your thoughts as
it took me by surprise. He brought up Corbyn Carroll
and he said that he trade some like Noel Vi
Marte or somebody. I'm like, come on, and he's like, well,
how about this Hunter Green And I was like, hmmm,
(01:52:14):
it's not a bad idea. It's not a bad idea.
Get him on the phone, Nick Collin, see Corbyn Carroll
from Hunter Green exactly. Give me a quick preview of
the trip to Saint Louis this weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:52:28):
Gonna be interesting to see how the Reds match up
with Saint Louis because They've been a lot better than
I expected. Their lineup has been more consistent than I expected.
I thought that, you know, they would have trouble pitching,
but I also thought that their lineup would not cover
anything for them, and they've honestly been very solid. Now
they're kind of figuring out where Lars Newt bar is
(01:52:52):
and his injury and stuff like that. But I think
that ultimately the Reds have a really good shot to
win two out of three and start to separate the
Cells from the Redbirds.
Speaker 2 (01:53:01):
